DEVASTATION

Known as a gota frĂa, or cold drop, the sudden fall in temperatures is caused by the arrival of very cold polar air and this one is already being described as the worst since 1987. The local provinces of Alicante and Murcia have been particularly hard hit and the government has sent thousands of soldiers and vehicles from the Military Emergency Unit to the Vega Baja which has been devastated by the flooding. More than 3,500 people have had to be rescued and it is believed that 5000 were evacuated from their homes. Continued on page 8

T

he worst storm in years has hit the Costa Blanca and left total devastation in its wake. Lives have been lost, property ruined and families disrupted in what has been an extremely difficult few days.

The slow-moving weather system brought record downpours and galeforce winds to eastern Spain, causing flash floods, forcing hundreds from their homes and shutting down roads and schools across the region.

BITE SIZE Gypsum mine could NEWS: still go ahead Saturday weddings allowed again From this coming weekend, couples wishing to tie the knot at Torrevieja Town hall can do so on Saturdays. In fact, civil ceremonies can now take place from Monday through to Saturday and not just on Tuesdays and Thursdays as previously allowed. The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, made the announcement that from next week civil weddings can be held in the town hall of Torrevieja on Saturdays. The mayor said that the previous government team eliminated Saturday services, allowing weddings to take place only on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Dolón considers it of great importance to offer this public service to citizens who wish to marry – especially on the most popular day of the week to do so, a Saturday.

Alicante speed limit lowered Alicante city will impose a speed limit of 30 kilometres per hour on 80% of its streets, it was revealed this week. The Mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala, made the announcement revealing that the city aims to Continued on page 5

The territorial services of the Ministry of Industry and Energy, Mines section, has reactivated the gypsum mine project in San Miguel de Salinas, according to the neighbourhood association San Miguel Arcángel. Instead of cancelling the project, the Ministry has decided to promote the project, despite the fact that the operating company has not answered the allegations presented by various conservation groups, this neighbourhood association and the general public. The Ministry of Industry and Energy has modified the initial proposal made by the company with the exclusion of the mining grids included in the Escalona Protected Landscape area and its surroundings. However, it has not taken into account the impact on the Special Protection Area for Birds and according to the Neighbourhood Association the core of the proposal for the area of potential exploitation is located in this protected area. A spokesman for the Association said: “The LIC (Place of Community Interest)

and the SPA of the Sierra de Escalona and Dehesa de Campoamor are two protected areas of the Natura 2000 Network derived from compliance with the European Directive on Birds in danger of extinction. This reformulation of the research area does not respect the current precautionary measures or the Escalona SPA.” In addition to the impact on the landscape and the natural environment, mining would have a serious impact on the traditional town centre and surrounding satellite urbanisations, since San Miguel de Salinas is located on a plaster mound and the exploitation site borders the urban area. It is feared, should the mine go ahead that it would devastate the local tourism industry, the market for second homes, water and infrastructure including drinking water and irrigation canals attached to Pedrera lake and the Tajo Segura transfer. The neighbourhood association held two community meetings to inform local residents of the situation and propose actions that counteract this initiative by the Ministry of Industry and Energy.

improve urban mobility and traffic infrastructure. This year, a new degree being offered at the University of Alicante, will see 25 people trained as specialists in Intelligent Urban Mobility. The students will be trained in a number of key objectives including the study of people’s travel habits, European mobility strategies and policies, environmental impact, new technologies and the advancement of the ‘smart city’ in terms of transport and its management.

Creative arts – registration now open Torrevieja’s various schools of creative arts (theatre and dance) are now open for registration to new students. Students over 8 years old interested in the Theatre School can visit the Virgen del Carmen cultural centre (on the second floor) between 9am and 2pm on weekdays. The tuition fee is €50. Likewise, the Dance School is taking registrations until September 28th and this can also be done on the second floor of the Virgen del Carmen but between 5.30pm and 8pm. The school is open to students over 6 years old.

Torrevieja - International Tapas Day The popular International Tapas Day takes place this year on September 28th. Participating Bars and Restaurants will offer a drink and a ‘tapa’ for a set price of €2.50 from 12 noon to 4.30pm and again from 7.30pm to 11pm. Last year, 23 establishments took part in the event which is now in its fourth year and is set to coincide with World Tapas Day. Usually, participating restaurants provide special gifts to visitors (last year, it was a souveneir neckerchief ) and it is hoped that the day will drum up some important business for bars and restaurants in the town now that the busy summer season is coming to a close.

Three arrests in Benidorm Police in Benidorm have arrested three people involved in a series of thefts targeting tourists and the elderly. The three, although sharing a similar modus operandi, are not believed to be linked and were arrested separately. National police arrested two women and one man after a spate of robberies over the summer. Despite not being linked, the three worked in a similar manner. All lived elsewhere but travelled to Benidorm specifically to commit Continued on page 8

Costa Blanca People is proud to present a fundraising afternoon in aid of local people affected by the recent flooding in the area as a result of the Gota Fria. The extravaganza event will take place at Villamartin Plaza this Sunday, 22nd September, and we would like to invite all of our readers and members of the local community to join us for a fabulous afternoon of fun and fundraising. The event will be hosted by Stevie Spit and there will be a grand prize raffle and an auction to help raise money for those in need. The event will also provide a collection point for those wishing to donate clothes, dry or tinned food stuffs, bottled water, school materials or toiletries. As well as the fundraising there will also be lots of fun; with bars and restaurants

serving food and drinks. There will be performances by some of the southern Costa Blanca’s leading entertainers taking the afternoon into the evening, including the fabulous Jersey Boys. All monies raised and goods collected will be used to help people in the local community and for this reason we have chosen to work with Help Vega Baja which will co-ordinate the distribution of the items where they are needed most and will present individual cases to its Crisis Committee who will allocate help as and where it is needed most. If you can help with any of the above please contact Claire Richards on 607 03 11 13. We are particularly in need of raffle and auction prizes if anyone can help. No more Brexit concessions says Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez has announced that he does not believe there is room for any further negotiations on a Brexit deal, and has urged Spanish companies to start documenting where and how they would be affected in the event of a no-deal scenario. Sánchez said ‘we cannot keep renegotiating what has already been negotiated,’ and lamented what he calls the 'complete political blockage' and 'constitutional crisis' in British Parliament and criticised Prime Minister Boris Johnson for 'not respecting the agreement already reached'. “Spain is as prepared as it can be for the increasingly likely possibility of a hard Brexit,” Sánchez told Congress. Our government has worked hard to cover any possible scenario.” He urged all affected citizens – Brits who live or own second homes in Spain, British holidaymakers, and Spaniards living in the UK – as well as all financial, business and institutional parties who could be affected by Brexit to 'remain calm', but also admits that 'everyone needs to be honest and realistic' and that the contingency measures adopted 'can only mitigate the consequences', but 'cannot

eliminate them altogether'. “Only a small part of those consequences are within the European Union's control – the rest depends upon whatever decisions the UK government and Parliament take. “To this end, everyone likely to be affected needs to start evaluating how far they could be impacted by a no-deal Brexit and try to take whatever steps they can to minimise that impact.” Sánchez, like many other European leaders, does not agree with the UK government's decision to leave the EU, and considers it to be the result of misinformation, 'fake news' and misleading claims made by the 'Vote Leave' campaign. “What seemed unthinkable a few months ago has now become the most probable scenario,” Sánchez said of a nodeal Brexit. British Parliament – which was suspended officially last week until 14th October – pushed through a vote days earlier outlawing a no-deal Brexit, and has blocked a general election prior to the end of November since it would result in Parliament's being dissolved ahead of the Brexit deadline of 31st October.

This leaves Boris Johnson with the options of revoking Article 50 – which he refuses to do – or negotiating an extension to Brexit, which in his own words, he would 'rather be dead in a ditch' than do. If he contravenes what has now become law, he could face criminal action, so he may end up having to resign. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, is ready to call a vote of no confidence in Johnson and is keen to call a second referendum. Corbyn wants the eventual deal to be on the ballot paper along with the options to leave without a deal, or to remain in the EU. Sánchez says Corbyn is 'defending a much more sensible policy' on Brexit. The Spanish leader has taken on a further 875 State personnel to deal with the Brexit issue. They will work closely with customs officers, border control on the entry of imported goods and of people, and on handling the 'new régime for British residents in Spain'. The latter, Sánchez said earlier this year, would involve giving automatic permanent residence rights to the estimated 400,000 Brits who reside in the country for more than six months a year.

theft. They preyed on foreign and elderly tourists – the man arrested stole bags from tourists on the beach who had let their guard down. Other victims had bags snatched or were victims of ‘pickpocketing’ and had purses and wallets stolen.

One tourist, a woman with reduced mobility, was offered ‘help’ by one of the suspects but was actually robbed of her belongings. The other female suspect is accused of stealing a high end smart phone from another tourist who was sitting on the terrace of a bar. The tourist was approached by the suspect who, with a handwritten cardboard sign asking for help, managed to cover the phone and distract the victim in order to steal it.

CostaBlancaPeople 17th - 23rd September 2019

Continued from page 1 A total of 74 roads were closed, along with the entire Murcia regional railway service and airport. Alicante and Almeria airports were also affected by flight delays and temporary closures. The railway link between Alicante and Spain's two main cities - Madrid and Barcelona, was also shut and there was no local or regional public transport. Many towns and villages were hit with a year’s worth of rain fall in one day.

Loss of life The heavy rainfall that has battered the southeast of Spain has claimed a total of six lives. On Thursday, two siblings died after their vehicle was swept away by a current in Caudete, in Albacete province. On Friday, a Moroccan man was unaware that a flooded underpass in Almería had been cordoned off due to the flooding and entered in his vehicle. The emergency services were unable to save him. Another man, aged 36, lost his life in La Jámula, an area of Granada. His body was located by a National Police helicopter some distance from his vehicle, which had been found hours before, according to municipal sources. The body of a fifth victim, aged 58, was located on Friday night. The man, who had been missing since midday, was from Redován in Alicante and his body was found by a helicopter in an area close to Orihuela. On Saturday, a 41-year-old man was found dead in small village on the outskirts of Orihuela.

Orihuela In the city of Orihuela, the Segura River overflowed its banks. The weather service for Valencia said 12 centimetres (4.7 inches) of rain had fallen in just six hours in Orihuela by Friday morning. This led to

www.costablancapeople.com

all routes being closed into and out of the city and residents were placed under a driving ban. The surging Segura River finally burst its banks on Saturday morning and brown-coloured water coursed through the streets, carrying away parked cars and inundating the bottom floors of houses in many riverside towns.

Coast Given the devastation seen in nearby areas such as Dolores, Catral and Almoradí, Orihuela Costa had a lucky escape. However, its beaches were decimated including its flagship beach at La Zenia. The worst hit was La Glea beach at Dehesa de Campoamor which saw the road collapse in several places and the new promenade disappear. The barranco became a fast flowing river, as the water from higher up raced towards its natural

side of the Town Hall and in La Florida. To add insult to injury, once the waters began to subside the roads, which were already in a poor state of repair, have been left with huge potholes and debris scattered over them. Costa Schools have been closed since Thursday and will remain so until at least today (Tuesday). In Pilar de la Horadada the AP7 tunnel flooded in less than 20 minutes and rescuers in a small rubber boat were towed upstream by a jet ski into the flooded tunnel where four people were trapped on top of their cars. They later rowed out with the rescued motorists, much to everyone’s delight.

More evacuations escape route, the sea. It took with it everything in its path including roads, pavements, part of the lifeguard hut and beach itself. Many residents suffered as their houses let in flood water and several cars were trapped in flooding hotspots such as near to the Royal Oak, the underpass at the

Around 500 people were evacuated from the Marjal campsite near Crevillente, one of the largest campsites on the Costa Blanca, during the early hours of Sunday morning. Many of the campers were provisionally housed in local sports centres. A 66-year-old Dutch man, who is said to have fallen into a ditch and subsequently been swept away by flood

waters in Dolores, is still believed to be missing. The missing man is thought to have been on holiday in the area. His family reported the accident to the local police, which launched a search involving divers, boats and a helicopter. The man had not been found by nightfall on Sunday, when the search was halted. Further breakages in the river banks on Sunday afternoon, forced evacuations from Heradades and reinstated the emergency status in Almoradí. The massive cleanup operation is now underway with many hundreds of people still displaced. Local groups are deploying volunteers to help and many businesses, charities and organisations have been collecting bottled water, clothing and foodstuffs for evacuees. Local entertainer Stevie Spit, alongside the Costa Blanca People, is staging a fundraiser on Sunday at Villamartin Plaza to help people directly impacted by the flooding. More information on page 5 of this week’s paper and updates will be posted on the Costa Blanca People Facebook page throughout the week as more information is confirmed.

Help Daniella

The local community is being asked to rally round and help little Daniella Sixx aged just 14 months by supporting an event at Sea Veiw, Playa Flamenca on Sunday 22nd September at 2pm. The event aims to raise enough money to buy this amazing little girl a special needs pram and hopefully have enough left to help her parents cover her vital vitamins. a suffering After haemorrhage whilst still in the womb Daniella was born practically blind and due to the trauma part of her brain hadn’t developed properly. This left her with multiple disabilities and epilepsy. Her parents were told it was doubtful she would ever walk or talk but once home things became infinitely worse. One day Daniella slept all day and didn't wake up or take her bottle so her Mum took her to the hospital they took her bloods and found her lactic

acid unusually high and that month she had more than 300 tests done. Her parents then got the devastating news that she has the rare Mitochondrial Disease PDHA, which is incurable. Daniella was given a lifespan of just 2 years, but having joined a global support group with mums all over the world, Mum Nikki is hopeful Daniella could live up till the age of 10. Nikki turned to the government for help but was told to put Daniella into a nursery and get a job to support her child’s medical needs, as she wasn’t entitled to a single cent. There are no medications available to treat Daniella’s conditions, however, she has to take a cocktail of vitamins to keep her alive as her body doesn't absorb or produce vitamins from food. Nikki said: “Even if a could bear to leave Daniella when she is so poorly, no nursery would take responsibility for her due to her severe special needs. Nor could I afford nursery care on top of our housing costs and bills. I have been resident here for 16 years and feel completely let down and angry that there is no support for the parents of special needs children. I am struggling to juggle Daniella’s three physiotherapy sessions a week, endless appointments to Torrevieja hospital, Cabo Roig medical

centre and Valencia La Fe hospital where her specialist is. We rely on fundraisers to help pay for vital things she needs and I feel we have been made to suffer for having a child with special needs.” Every night Daniella screams in pain for hours due to stomach and digestion problems but she cannot be prescribed medication as she can't have sugar as it raises lactic acid and would cause more brain damage.

Fundraising If you would like to help this brave little girl, please go along to the event, or check out ‘Team Daniella Sixx’ on FaceBook. The event will see a host of entertainers perform at the bar and food will be available. The acts include: Sari & Alexis, Andy Copp, Drew Clark, Lady Jazz, Shannon Campbell, Russ Stevens and Melissa Fanning. Organisers hope that the community will pull together to support Daniella and her family.

Spain prepares for hard Brexit The Spanish government has activated nearly a thousand public employees in order to deal with the extra work that is expected should the United Kingdom crash out of the European Union on 31st October under a “no-deal Brexit.” The acting Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez of the Socialist Party (PSOE), said in Congress that 875 public positions have been put in place with the aim of strengthening the areas that are most exposed to an abrupt divorce between the EU and the UK. “In most cases, these employees were already in their positions,” explained Sánchez, who used much of his speech in Spain’s lower house of parliament to explain the preparations the country has been making should a no-deal Brexit come to pass. These additional roles, which the government has been filling over recent months, are mostly focused on customs services, trade in goods, border controls and tasks associated with the “transition to the new regime” that British citizens in Spain will have to deal with after a hard Brexit, such as arranging the new identity documents that they might need. As many as 400,000 Britons in Spain may apply for the new immigration status that British citizens will need once their country is no longer subject to the free movement and residency that the EU offers. This figure is above the official statistic of 330,000 Britons who are officially registered in Spain, according to Interior Ministry data, given that there are estimates of a

number of UK citizens who have not yet registered as official residents as their status as EU citizens afforded them rights without the need for paperwork. “Spain is ready for any scenario, including a hard Brexit,” the Prime Minister told Congress, saying that he wanted to convey a “message of calm” to citizens and the companies that may be affected. The British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar – located in the south of Spain, and which voted overwhelmingly to remain in the 2016 Brexit referendum – is likely to be a key element for Spain when the UK leaves the EU, given that the border there will constitute a frontier between the EU and what will be a third country. Conscious of the importance of “The Rock,” as Gibraltar is commonly known, Sánchez extolled the measures secured for the British

Overseas Territory in the negotiations between Brussels and London for an orderly withdrawal. Sánchez presented as a strength something that at the time of the talks was seen as a weakness: that the veto that Spain has over any benefit that Gibraltar may be granted as part of Brexit is contained within a separate document, rather than forming part of the so-called withdrawal agreement. This means that Spain’s right to give its approval or otherwise to including Gibraltar within any ordered withdrawal framework is valid even in the case of a no-deal Brexit – although the UK is highly likely to contest this point. Spain is on course to hold its fourth general election in as many years in November, given that talks between Sánchez’s PSOE and left-wing Unidas Podemos have failed so far to come up with a governing deal.

Spanish government makes moves to banish Mar Menor pollution

Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition has announced 21 measures to reduce pollution and runoff into the Mar Menor to ‘zero’. The measures will tackle dung from cattle farms, runoff from old mines and water treatment in an effort to stop nitrates and nitrites reaching the

biodiverse salt-water lagoon. It comes as environmental campaigners have spent years fighting the ‘poisoning’ and ‘green-coloured waters’ at the World Heritage Site. The 10-year project will cost €430 to €615 million with the national Ministry working closely with Murcia’s councillor for agriculture, Antonio Luengo. The most expensive parts of the project include construction of a drainage network around the shore of the lagoon.

Murcia’s Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS) will also work to clear up floodwater channels known as ‘ramblas’. Citizens’ action groups have been very critical of the local authorities’ inability to properly maintain these ramblas that drain the land into the sea, as slowflowing water collects more chemicals destined the lagoon. Such nitrates and nutrients are harmful and cause an ‘algal bloom’ that turns the waters green, as they did in 2016.

GBP / EUR UPDATE The pound had a good week. GDP data showed a 0.3% growth for the UK economy, a recovery from the 0.2% contraction in Q2. This means that growth overall is flat for the last three months, although the picture is somewhat mixed with growth showing in the service sector and the ONS noting “falls in construction and manufacturing.” The passing of legislation blocking a no-deal Brexit prior to the suspension of Parliament gave sterling a further boost. Investors appear to have priced out a ‘no deal’ Brexit in October and the pound made gains against the euro and the US dollar. While no-deal fears may have receded slightly, the shadow of Brexit remains and news of a 3.9% growth in UK wages failed to push the pound upward as expected. Towards the end of the week, sterling gained against a subdued euro as the market awaited an announcement from the ECB and there was a note of cautious optimism as Deputy Labour leader Tom Watson called for a move towards remaining in the EU and a second referendum as a point of party policy. In addition, German Chancellor Angela Merkel confirmed that there was still “every chance” of an orderly Brexit, helping the pound to make modest gains against the euro, US dollar and a basket of other currencies. The euro faced a range of challenges this week, although there was some good news. Fears of a potential recession in Germany diminished after the trade balance figures were

released; the figure widened to 21.4bn euros, reflecting its biggest growth since March. Against a forecast fall in exports by 0.5%, the number for June recorded a 0.7% rise. In addition, the possibility of fiscal stimulus within Germany helped the euro reach 1.1051 against the US dollar, a gain of 0.22% on the day during a week where investors were mostly holding their breath for the ECB decision on Thursday. The actions of the ECB announced by Mario Draghi were largely expected following a slowdown across the eurozone; the central currency made gains against the US dollar after the announcement but failed to rise as much as expected as some investors felt that the approach wasn’t as dovish as they had been led to expect. The ECB cut its deposit rate to a record low -0.5% from -0.4% and will restart bond purchases of 20 billion euros a month from November. Draghi confirmed that interest rates will remain at current or lower levels "until [the ECB] has seen the inflation outlook robustly converge to a level sufficiently close to, but below, 2%...and such convergence has been consistently reflected in... inflation dynamics." The ECB president also called for more spending from government across the Eurozone to boost the bloc’s economy. Global trade has been muted due to the US-China trade war and that has been having an effect in Europe and the market will now wait to see if the ECB has done enough to address the current challenges.

Drunk Brit shoots at Benidorm doorman A dramatic shooting was reported on the packed streets of Benidorm, after a ‘drunken Englishman’ was refused entry to a nightclub in the early hours of the morning. The aggressor, a 46-year-old Briton, was tracked down and arrested by Policia Local, after shooting a doorman in the leg and fleeing from the scene. He and a friend were earlier refused entry to a nightclub because he was ‘in

a serious state of intoxication’, eye witnesses said. The sources claim that after a struggle, the pair left, threatening the 38-year-old employee. The Briton later returned in a car and parked up in front of the premises, shooting a low-calibre weapon twice into the air, and once at the Romanian’s leg. As the victim gave chase, he found Policia Local agents who alerted

colleagues across the city, and the perpetrator was quickly found on Amtella del Mar Avenue. Authorities are working with British Police to see if the shooter has a criminal record at home, and with the Commissariat to determine whether the firearm has been used in other crimes. Benidorm Police advise that the doorman was released from a private clinic later that morning, after being treated for gunshot wounds to the leg. Lorenzo Martínez, Councillor for

Citizen Security of Benidorm, congratulated the Police for their speed and professionalism, highlighting, ‘the reaction capacity of the Local Police, which in a matter of minutes stopped the alleged shooter.’ In July of last year, an English tourist was killed when caught in the crossfire of a gangland shooting. A fight in March resulted in a Scotsman dying from a blow to the head, and two workers were stabbed in February when trying to stop an altercation in their club.

New court buildings across the region The Minister of Justice, Gabriela Bravo, has announced the construction of new courts in Alicante, La Vila Joiosa, Alzira, Llíria, Gandia, Orihuela, Xàtiva, Torrent, Sagunto and Villena. The Minister also announced that the Generalitat will deploy officers of the unit of the National Police to protect women victims of sexist violence at extreme risk if so decided by a judge and they consent. Gabriela Bravo made these statements during an appearance before the plenary session of Les Corts, in which she explained the key projects of the department for the present legislature. The Minister insisted on the need to move forward "in the effort that all the Bar Associations and Attorneys across the Community have a specialised shift in gender violence, and that it is also exclusive, that is, that the same lawyer does not defend an alleged perpetrator after attending to a victim of abuse." Another announcement by the regional government was the extension of the 112 Emergency Coordination Centre of l'Eliana in Valencia with a new building that will be equipped with "the best infrastructure and the most modern communication technologies". However, there was no mention of the half-built Emergency Services Centre in Orihuela Costa.

Still using your UK financial adviser? M

any people who have retired to Spain and have investments still use their old UK‐based financial adviser. This could be for a variety of reasons, from feeling comfortable with the person they have been dealing with for many years, to not knowing any local Spanish‐based financial advisers. One of the main problems of continuing with your old adviser is they may not be authorised to give advice here in Spain. They almost certainly will not have the in‐depth knowledge of the tax‐efficient products available to Spanish tax residents. Apart from the understanding of the Spanish system, having a local adviser means you can pop in to their office for a chat and be kept up to date with all the various changes that take place. This is especially relevant at the moment with the uncertainty surrounding Brexit. There are many advisers in Spain, but it is vitally important to ensure that the adviser you choose is UK qualified and properly authorised and regulated. Seagate Wealth advisers all used to work for Lloyds Bank and have a deep understanding of what British people want and expect from their financial adviser. Having worked in the service industry, they are fully‐versed in customer care and regulation. By being a completely independent company, Seagate Wealth has access to a vast range of flexible, cost effective products from some of the worlds’ leading providers, including Prudential International. Here at Seagate Wealth, we can help with savings and investment advice, tracing lost pensions as well as managing existing pensions. If you are thinking about finding a new Spanish‐based financial adviser, then give us a call and see what we can do for you to ensure you live life the way you want.

Warm colours for autumn decor upgrade After a stifling summer, settling into a cosy autumn at home sounds idyllic and there's no better time to infuse your space with inviting, warm colours than when the weather cools down.

Autumn is the perfect time to embrace warm colours in your home, as the natural autumn colour palette ranges the whole warm side of the colour wheel. Refreshing your textiles, art, accessories, or floral arrangements with these autumnal hues can embrace the cosiness and warmth of the season. So what does it actually mean and look like to decorate your home with warm colours? What are examples of warm colours? In general, warm colours are those in the red, orange, and yellow families, while cool colours are those in the green, blue, and purple families. Think scarlet, peach, pink, amber, sienna, and gold versus cooler teal, eggplant, emerald, aqua, and cobalt. Remember the colour

wheel from grade school art class? A line drawn right through the middle divvies up those two groupings, although hues near where the halves meet (like purple) can function as "hybrid colors". You can also think of warm colours as cosy, earthy tones. Warm colours are camel leathers, oranges, deep grays, and taupes. Cooler colors are usually lighter and bring an airy feel to a room. Is white a cold or warm colour? Both! White can lean cooler or warmer, depending

on the shade. If you look closely, you can see hints of the undertones like red, blue, yellow, and purple in the colour. It may take some practice to pick up on these subtle tints, but they can make a big impact on how a paint colour or piece of furniture will look in

a room. Yellow or pink undertones will read warmer, while whites with blue or green undertones will appear cooler. Different types of lighting can also influence whether a white will look warm or cool - hence why many designers recommend testing a big swatch on the wall before painting an entire room. If you have tons of natural light pouring in, things will appear cooler, whereas rooms lit with artificial light will look much warmer. Don't worry about matching every white in a room perfectly. Utilizing both cool and warm whites can bring in the best of both worlds. Layering a crisp, clean white with other warmer whites because it makes for a light and airy, yet cosy and warm vibe. Just like white, gray can also function as a warm or cool colour. If you want one that skews warm for your walls, try Classic Gray by Benjamin Moore. It feels light and airy, but there is also a warm elegance and formality to it that makes it perfect for a living room with bright white trim. How can you tell if a color is warm or cool? You can tell if a colour is warm if it seems to be more mellow. Bold and vivid colours tend to be on the cold side. If you're still questioning your eyes, try this easy trick: hold the swatch or item in question next to a pure version of that colour (e.g., put your white against a true white from the colour wheel). You'll quickly determine which way it leans when you see them sideby-side.

Why I am not in his will? My partner and I have been together for 19 years, although we’ve never lived together we spend most of our time together in one or other’s homes. We live a distance from each other, 40 miles, so one week I will make the journey and he will drive over to me the next. I never had children but my partner has four. As we are approaching our 70s we have discussed the likelihood of setting up home together permanently. Then just the other day, we were talking about wills and he said his money is left equally to his three sons and one daughter. Am I wrong to feel slighted as he hasn’t intended to leave anything to me? Before this came to light, I had changed my will several years earlier to leave everything to my partner. It hurts that he’s left nothing to me, and now with the possibility of us setting up home together, everything seems very uncertain. If you haven’t talked to your partner about this yet, you should because it will eat away at you otherwise. It’s not uncommon for a father to leave his inheritance equally to his children but it is understandable that you feel hurt and you should tell him. If you were married, it would be different. Does he know you’ve left everything to him? This latest development of living together would need to be approached in a sensible way. You could broach the subject of what would happen to you and your joint property if the situation were to arise that if he died first – this would effectively make you homeless. Perhaps he hasn't even considered it? Then suggest you both go and see a Solicitor together to see what they advise would be the fairest way of dealing with inheritance. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. Orihuela to install new charging points for electric cars the for Councillor The Environment, Dámaso Aparicio, has announced that the City Council of Orihuela has received a grant for the installation of charging points for electric vehicles that will be located in the of parts different municipality. Additional subsidies have been granted by the Valencian Business of Institute Competitiveness (IVACE). This means that the Oriolano government has been awarded 38,765 euros of subsidy and in return will have to contribute 8,691 euros, which is about 20 percent of the total for the installation of these seven recharging points. "With these new points we

encourage the use of electric vehicles by facilitating their recharging in different locations across our municipality and therefore reducing pollution," explained the Councillor for the Environment. Councillor Aparicio has said that these charging points will be installed at Playa Flamenca in Calle Picasso, San Bartolomé in Calle Juan Carlos I, Torremendo Sports Center, Desamparados in Calle Las Escuelas, La Aparecida in Calle Las tres daisies, La Murada in Calle Siete de Julio and in the City of Orihuela in Calle Conchita Martínez Marín. These new charging points are added to those already installed last year in Doctor

García Rogel Avenue, La Vega Avenue, Calle Rio Street and to the two points on Orihuela Costa in Calle Fuego de Aguamarina and Avda. Paseo del Sea in La Zenia, as well as those found in the Puente Alto Industrial Estate. The City Council of Orihuela is still carrying out actions specifically designed to achieve a more sustainable development model ‘in which we are working intensely and firmly to reduce energy consumption and to improve energy efficiency and favour sustainable mobility by encouraging the use of sustainable transport in the city centre, coast and districts, ”explained the councillor.

3 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD ACCEPT THE 1ST OFFER Rebecca Serwotka Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! Featured on Best Buy Spain – Property TV – Sky Channel 189.

Ever thought how you would feel when you get your first offer? Excited? Nervous? Scared? Many people would be delighted to receive an offer on their home, but there are others that tend to second guess themselves when a serious offer is on the table. First of all, if the offer is a sensible one and realistically you could make it work, then don’t look a gift horse in the mouth! You never know when the next offer will come along. Sometimes holding out for a figure that you have in your head, could cost you a sale in the long run. We have always found that the first offer is usually the best one. Here are 3 reasons why accepting the first offer makes the most sense:

1

Unfortunately when properties remain unsold, buyers automatically assume that something’s wrong with it. You don’t want the property to sit on the market longer than it should be, losing value, as buyers are fully aware how long it’s been up for sale, which could ultimately influence their offer amount. So

when that offer is forthcoming, as long as it isn’t a “cheeky” one, this could be your best possible buyer.

2

If you need to close this chapter in your life and move on to the next exciting adventure, you must consider with care your first offer. If it means you can move on with your life, then do it. If you’re moving to get away from old memories, then the longer you keep refusing offers, means the longer you have to stay put. Only you are holding yourself back.

3

.Found your next home? Most sellers are also on the hunt for their next home, and there’s a chance they’ll also find a house before they’ve found a buyer for theirs. If time is of the essence, and you don’t want to lose your next home, then taking the first sensible offer will be the way to move forward. Selling a home is about more than just money, it’s about how smooth the transaction can be and moving on to the next chapter in your life. Selling your home? Enjoy the journey!

Thinking of selling your home, and want to know what papers you’ll be required to provide? Send an email to sales@homes4u.es to request the list. See our advert in the centre pages of this newspaper. www.homes4u.es

The low down on carbs Have you been doing your best to steer clear of carbs? You’re hardly alone as many women believe carbohydrates are the enemy. Carb-restricted eating plans are trendier than ever these days, as celebrities like Halle Berry and Kim Kardashian West promote the benefits of the ketogenic diet. Low-carb enthusiasts say the macronutrient triggers weight gain and contributes to a host of health problems, including disease-causing inflammation and the fuzzy-headed, unfocused feeling known as brain fog. But doctors warn that this type of all-ornothing thinking can be risky. Labelling an entire food group as “bad” is a vast over-simplification as carbs are everything from jelly beans to pinto beans. Indeed, one of the reasons carbohydrates cause so much confusion is that superfoods like cauliflower are lumped into the same category with hot dog buns. Research is clear, however, that choosing the most nutritious kinds of carbohydrates can improve your health and may actually help you slim down. The first step: reconsidering what you’ve always heard about your body’s number one source of energy.

Myth 1: A carb is a carb is a carb When you eat carbohydrates, they are broken down by your gut into glucose and released into your bloodstream. Your pancreas responds by releasing insulin to shuttle that glucose into cells. The higher your blood sugar levels get, the more insulin circulates through your system. And that can be problematic because excess insulin damages cells, ups your risk

of heart disease and diabetes, and triggers your body to store surplus glucose (the energy that your body doesn’t currently need) as fat—especially in your midsection. But here’s the crucial caveat: Not all carbs cause a big spike in blood sugar. Refined carbs—the kind found in sugars and processed grains, like white rice, and anything baked with white flour—are stripped of nutrients and contain little to no fibre; they are broken down swiftly and send your blood glucose and insulin levels soaring. Complex carbs, on the other hand, are made up of longer chains of sugar molecules (a.k.a. starches), as well as fibre; they take more time to digest and provide a steadier stream of blood sugar, prompting a more gradual release of insulin. These types of carbs are in a wide array of highly nutritious foods— including legumes, nuts and seeds, and all fruits and vegetables. Complex carbs are found in whole grains, too. If you eat grains as part of your diet, look for “100 percent whole grain” on labels (even on products like pasta and crackers). Just don’t be fooled by the socalled “whole-grain halo”: A product that also contains added sugar or any ingredients you can’t pronounce is not the healthiest option.

Myth 2: Carbs are bad for your body If your diet consists mostly of packaged treats and soda, then yes, your carb intake may cause problems like chronic inflammation and brain fog, among other

issues. But cutting back on all carbs comes at a real cost. Despite their bad PR, carbohydrates boast many health benefits. For starters, they help fuel your brain, kidneys, heart muscles, and central nervous system. Carbs also contribute to the production of the feel-good brain chemical serotonin. Thanks to their fibre, complex carbs aid digestion, help you feel full, keep cholesterol levels in check, and ease bloating and constipation. And perhaps most important, complex carbs are rich sources of nutrients and powerful phytochemicals, which play a role in preventing and even fighting illness and cellular aging. That may be why several studies, including a new report in the European Heart Journal, show that people with the lowest carbohydrate intake have an increased risk of early death from all causes. Moderate to high intakes of healthy carbs seem to have the opposite effect: Research shows that the Mediterranean diet, which is higher in lean protein and healthy fat, and the Japanese Okinawa diet, which is low in fat and protein, are linked to a longer life span. These two diets are very different— except for the fact that they’re both rich in whole, plant-based carbohydrates. So how many carbs should you consume? The answer differs for everyone. (An endurance athlete will need more than the average person, for example, because they’re burning more energy and require more fuel.) But as a

general rule, you can eat as many carbs as you like when they come in the form of low-starch vegetables (like asparagus, broccoli, celery) and low-glycemic fruits (such as pears, kiwis, and oranges)—or in other words, produce that has a nominal effect on your blood sugar. As for higher-starch complex carbs (hello, sweet potatoes and bananas), they’re best eaten in moderation; aim for a serving or so per meal, max, though the ideal amount for you really depends on your age, weight, and personal biochemistry.

Myth 3: Carbs pack on extra pounds Too much of any food group can lead to weight gain, and there’s no question it’s easy to overdo it on “empty” refined carbs and higher-starch carbs, like brown rice. The reality is, most peole are overconsuming carbs. However, when you’re eating mostly slowly digested complex

carbs—think leafy greens and lentils—it’s harder to go overboard. That’s because those foods leave you feeling satisfied, so you’re not craving a biscuit 30 minutes later. Choosing complex carbs over the refined kind might even help you lose weight. A study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, for example, revealed that obese adults on a reduced-calorie diet who ate four to seven daily servings of whole-grain foods shed twice as much abdominal fat as those eating refined grains. Because highfibre foods take longer to digest, they tend to even out blood sugar, leading to lower insulin levels—which keeps your body from creating excess belly fat. That said, if you have a significant amount of weight to lose, a low-carb plan may be appropriate. But—and this is key—you need to work with a doctor or nutritionist to make sure you’re still getting the nutrients your body needs.

Probe after soap stars' clash Bride scammer spotted in Benidorm ITV has launched an investigation after one of its young Emmerdale stars threatened to kill Jamie Lomas at last night's TV Choice Awards. Asan N'jie, who joined the soap a year ago as Ellis Chapman, and was thrown out of the Hilton Park Lane hotel in the wake of the brawl. Now the broadcaster is launching a probe into his conduct after Mirror Online broke the news. A spokesman for ITV said: "We are extremely concerned to hear about an incident at last night's TV Choice Awards involving one of Emmerdale's cast. "Obviously we will be investigating and talking to the actor concerned in due course." Asan N'jie is yet to break his silence over his involvement in the violent scuffle. He was seen throwing

punches at I'm A Celebrity campmate Jamie while celebrities such as Katherine Ryan ran out of the way of the brawl at the Hilton Park Lane hotel in London's Mayfair district. The fracas started when Asan made goading remarks at Kym Marsh's ex husband. Malique Thompson-Dwyer intervened to take his friend Jamie away from the dramatic situation. He said: "I told him to relax. I told him 'This isn't that kinda party. It's the TV Choice Awards.'" Emmerdale star Asan was escorted from the hotel by bodyguards, accompanied by his friend, 15 minutes after security intervened. Jamie stayed until 2am drinking with Love Island's Amber Gill and Malique.

Wanted wedding planner Dana Twidale who allegedly cheated happy couples has been spotted sunbathing in Benidorm swimming pool. The disgraced mum-of-four is wanted by Humberside Police and is facing nine counts of fraud in the UK after allegedly cheating happy couples of tens of thousands of pounds for weddings and services that never materialised. Dana Twidale, believed to be 42, was photographed at the Apartamentos Acuarium II in and around the community pool in August. Dana’s husband Carl Twidale has confirmed that the pictures are ‘100 percent Dana’ and says she was easy to identify due to her tattoos. The pictures were sent to Carl by someone holidaying around the same complex with her family. Carl, a barber from Hull, was defrauded of over £4,000 during his three-year marriage with Dana, before separating in 2017 and has only this year become aware of a ‘web of lies’ spun by the alleged con-artist.

“She has affected dozens of people, stealing tens of thousands,” Carl said. “At this point, my main concern is getting Dana’s second-youngest daughter back safely.” The 18-year-old is going through sexual transition and Carl believes she is vulnerable. She has been missing for around six weeks and is believed to be with Dana. Humberside Police believe Dana fled the UK after scores of people came forward claiming they had been conned. One couple from Harrogate were left in turmoil when Dana allegedly went missing 24 hours before their big day in late July. Nicky Thorpe says she paid ‘well over £2,000’ but was distraught to find an empty marquee two days before her wedding, she told Leeds Live. A Facebook group called ‘People affected by Dana Twidale the wedding planner help and support’ has since amassed more than 800 members. Many have lost up to ‘£3,000’ for everything

from cakes to photographers to white lanterns and decorations. Another victim, Nigel Wainwright, claimed he met Dana on Tinder before she conned him into paying for her mother’s funeral – while her mother was still alive. “I can’t and will not rest until she is in police custody,” Carl said. It is not yet clear where Dana has gone, or if she is still in Spain. If you have any information please contact Humberside Police quoting the reference ref: 609-2607. Carl’s Action Fraud number is: NFRC190703118931.

Strictly uses speed dating techniques The BBC has revealed it uses a “speed dating” technique to pair Strictly Come Dancing professionals with their celebrity partners. Strictly producers stage what they call a “chemistry circle” in which all the contestants and dancers meet for the first time. Aljaž Škorjanec, one of the pro dancers, explained: “They put us in a circle. We do a salsa and a waltz. The celebrities do, like, four steps and then we sort of move on.”

A fellow dancer, Dianne Buswell, said she referred to the process as “speed dating”. As the celebrities dance with each professional in turn, producers walk around the room observing which pairings have the greatest chemistry. Footage of this year’s session was included in a BBC One special, Strictly The Professionals, broadcast last Saturday. It features interviews with former contestants. Jake Wood, the

EastEnders actor, said the event was unnerving: “The producers all walk around and you’re not sure what they’re looking at,” he said. Mollie King, the singer and 2017 semi-finalist, joked that “all of us female contestants danced with all of the pro boys and it was one of the best moments of my life, just being swung from man to man”.

Brian Conley, the comedian, said the professional dancers were more interested in where the celebrities were based than their dancing ability. He recalled: “Everyone will come up to you and say, ‘Hello, where do you live?’ I thought, why does everyone want to know where I live? And it’s because they know they’ve got to rehearse with you and they don’t want to be too far away from London.”

Benefits of eating Turmeric A member of the ginger family, turmeric has been used medicinally for years around the globe, either directly or in concentrated extracts. You’ll find it in lattes, golden milk, immunity shots, and energy bars. Turmeric’s main claim to fame is its anti-inflammatory potency. Unchecked low-grade metabolic inflammation is a known trigger of premature aging, as well as chronic disease risk. It also exacerbates inflammatory conditions. This means turmeric can offer skin benefits, including improvements to psoriasis and eczema, in addition to other inflammatory conditions like osteoarthritis, IBS, asthma, and even obesity. Several studies have found that the key protective compound in turmeric, called curcumin, reduces inflammation. Curcumin also acts as an antioxidant, to counter damaging compounds called free radicals, and fight what’s known as oxidative stress. In a nutshell, oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between the production of cell-damaging free radicals and the body's ability to counter their harmful effects. Because of curcumin's antiinflammatory and antioxidant benefits, turmeric has health benefits for skin, preventing or helping to repair visible signs of aging. Curcumin has also been shown to increase levels of neurotrophic

factor (BDNF) in the brain. That’s crucial, because BDNF acts as a type of growth hormone that protects the brain from agerelated decline or damage. Low BDNF levels are tied to depression, as well as Alzheimer’s. Research also shows that curcumin inserts itself into cell membranes, which may help to boost cells’ resistance to damage, infection, and inflammation. Curcumin protects the heart via its anti-inflammatory effects, and its ability to improve the function of the cells that make up the lining of our blood vessels. The compound helps fight cancer through its ability to kill off cancer cells, and it prevent cells from growing and spreading, but requires much more than would be ingested from adding turmeric to a meal. When it comes to combating depression, one study shows a curcumin supplement was found to be as effective as Prozac. In a review of studies, curcumin was shown to improve fasting blood sugar levels, reduce triglycerides (blood fats), improve “good” HDL cholesterol, and diastolic blood pressure. In animal research, curcumin appears to play a role in detoxification, which

essentially means helping to deactivate potentially damaging chemicals, or shuttle them out of the body more quickly. Turmeric can be purchased fresh, in the produce section, or dried, in the seasoning aisle. The spice is poorly absorbed without the addition of black pepper. Research shows that curcumin needs piperine, a substance found in black pepper, in order to be absorbed from the digestive system into the bloodstream. It’s also important to note that curcumin is fat soluble, meaning it needs to hitch a ride with fat in order to be transported from the gut into the body. To up absorption, whisk both turmeric and black pepper into a simple vinaigrette made with extra virgin olive oil, vinegar, garlic, lemon, and Italian herb seasoning. Sprinkle turmeric, black pepper, and sea salt onto a sliced avocado. Blend the duo into a fruit smoothie, along with nut butter or tahini. Or sprinkle it into an omelette made with veggies, herbs, and whole eggs.

Top Spanish chef feeds Hurricane Dorian victims Celebrity Spanish chef José Andrés has told how he has been in the Bahamas with his charity World Central Kitchen setting up shelters and makeshift kitchens, and cooking meals, for evacuees. Rain-soaked, windblown and shouting to be heard above the 295kilometre (183mph) gusts, the top culinary expert who turned down a lucrative Trump Towers contract in protest over the US president's antiLatin comments filmed himself after he arrived in the Caribbean archipelago recently. Battered by Hurricane Dorian – which has reached the maximum of level 5 on the Saffir Simpson Scale – the Bahamas islands are suffering the most dangerous cyclone this 'windy season' and thousands have been forced to flee their homes, which may or may not be there when they return. Dorian struck the Ábaco Islands and moved on to Grand Bahama before hitting Florida. José Andrés says he was safe, despite the extreme gales, as he was 130 kilometres away from the

eye of the storm. “We at World Central Kitchen are 80 miles from the Hurricane Dorian eye and feeling this! Imagine what the people of

Ábaco and Grand Bahama will be experiencing! Bahamas government will need major help! Florida should also get ready for major winds!” Andrés tweeted at the time. “How de we organise a response in Bahamas?” he asked, referring his followers to a map with 'pins' running from north to

south. World Central Kitchen has kitchens ready to go and shelters mapped out. If kitchens are destroyed, we build one and cook in big paella pans!” US-based Andrés, who has several famous eateries across the country, helped out Puerto Rico in 2017 when Hurricane María destroyed the island and left thousands dead, and also dished up food to the earthquake victims in Haïti in 2010. He also served up meals to a long queue of government employees in Washington DC during the Trump shutdown, which led to staff not being paid for weeks. More recently, Andrés offered a job to a dinner lady who was fired for giving a meal to a schoolboy whose family could not afford to pay for it – even though he brought the money in the next day. Andrés, nominated one of Time magazine's Top 100 World's Most Influential People, set up his antipoverty charity World Central Kitchen along with his wife, and dishes up meals where they are most needed.

Best AntiAging Foods While most of us are content to act our age, the truth is that no one wants to look their age. However, before you spend extra euros on the Crème de La Mer, reach for the Botox, or start Googling the best plastic surgeon in Alicante, there are some less invasive, more cost effective, and much tastier options for fighting the effects of aging: the food you're eating. Foods that are antioxidant-rich can help reduce some of the outward signs of aging, by combating free-radicals, helping to reverse sun damage, and trying to keep collagen where it belongs. Remember, though, that even if you eat all these foods, exercise, sunscreen, a lowstress lifestyle, and a good night’s sleep are equally important parts of your antiaging regimen. Here are some of the top anti-aging foods to add to your diet...

higher the flavanol content, so aim for chocolate with 70 percent cocoa solids and, sorry, but milk chocolate won’t cut it. Criciferous veg That includes, broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower are a great source of vitamin C, which helps promote collagen and vitamins A and K and folate, which may help prevent sun damage. Plus, according to Prevention, they can also keep your heart and bones strong. Green Tea One cup of green tea a day can help reduce sun damage and brown spots thanks to the presence of catechins and polyphenols. These powerful may help reverse skin damage due to the sun, stress, and pollution.

Blueberries Blueberries are rich in vitamins A and C, as well as more age-defying antioxidants than almost any other food. The power lies in something called anthocyanin, which is also found in Concord grapes, which is a potent antioxidant that can keep your skin young and your mind sharp.

Avocado An avocado is filled with monounsaturated fat, which is one of those healthy fats you hear about. It helps your skin stay hydrated and can help your body better absorb vitamins and nutrients that it needs. Studies have shown that there's a positive link between avocado consumption and skin health. Olive oil also has monounsaturated fats, which can help skin stay elastic.

Dark chocolate Dark Chocolate is filled with antioxidants called flavanols, which protect the skin from sun damage. In studies people with high-flavanol consumption had better blood flow to the skin and improved skin thickness, hydration, and smoothness. Keep in mind that the higher the cocoa content, the

Nuts Almonds in particular, are filled with vitamin E, which can help repair skin tissue, works to retain moisture, and protects skin from the effects of damaging UV rays, all important of a radiant complexion.

Leafy greens Spinach, collards, and watercress are a great, hydrating source of vitamins A, C, and E, which may protect skin from harmful free radicals and promote collagen growth. It also is filled with vitamin K, which has been linked to helping reduce inflammation and lutein, which has been shown to improve skin elasticity, according to a study in the journal Nutrients. Sweet potatoes They are packed with nutrients, including vitamins C and E which are important for a radiant complexion. They also come filled with beta-carotene, which is converted to vitamin A, a vitamin that may help restore skin elasticity and promote skin cell turnover for more youthful-looking skin. Carrots and pumpkins are also packed with beta carotene. Pomegranate According to several studies, the high levels of antioxidants and vitamin C found in pomegranate seeds can help ward off free radical damage and reduce levels of inflammation. The little seeds also contain two unique age-fighting compounds: ellagic acid and punicalagin, which may help preserve collagen in the skin and slow signs of aging. Grapes According to WebMD, they contain

high levels of Resveratrol, which comes from the skin of grapes, counters inflammation and may fight the effects of UV light and sun damage. The compound is also in red wine and cocoa powder. Oil Rich Fish Salmon, sardines, or mackerel contain omega-3s, which can help slow the growth of certain types of skin cancer. Consuming two servings of fish a week can reduce chronic skin inflammations, such as eczema and psoriasis. If fish isn’t your thing, flax seeds, chia seeds, and walnuts also have omega-3s. Lentils Lentils are rich in polyphenols such as procyanidin and prodelphinidin. Polyphenols can help prevent “oxidative stress,” which can contribute to older looking skin. Oats and Other Whole Grains According to WebMD, this lowglycemic food will help keep your blood sugar steady. By contrast, high-glycemic foods, like pasta and white rice, can cause acne and wrinkles.

Fruit Oranges are packed with Vitamin C which promotes collagen growth, moderates inflammation, and helps prevent collagen loss. Mango is an excellent source of vitamin A and carotenoids improve both cell growth and immune function resulting in skin that glows. Papaya is a superfood filled with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that studies have shown may help to improve skin elasticity and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and may delay signs of aging. Papaya also contains an enzyme called papain, which is considered one of nature’s best antiinflammatory agents. Tomatoes are an excellent source of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant, as well as vitamin C, and potassium, which can help regulate the balance of water and nutrients in cells. In addition to helping maintain a dewy complexion, lycopene has been proven to help lower risk of cardiovascular disease, prostate cancer, and total cholesterol. Watermelon is also a good, hydrating source of the nutrient.

Parents advised to check that poor eye sight is not holding their children back Opticians are using the start of the new school year as an opportunity to inform parents and children of the importance of regular eye tests. At the start of term, they recommend that parents take their children to a professional who can check their visionand take the right measures to ensure that their eye sight is not holding them back. Poor vision can inhibit learning and hold them back from performing well in sports. Juan Carlos Martínez Moral, president of the General Council of Colleges of OpticiansOptometrists (CGCOO),says: ‘As vision can often change during your school career, it is important to have regular eye examinations by an opticianoptometrist. By having your eyes tested at least once a year, you can rule out refractive problems such as long-sightedness, shortsightedness, or astigmatism; binocular vision abnormalities such as strabismus, or amblyopia, popularly referred to as "lazy eye".’ Francisco Jurado from optical group Specsavers Ópticas agrees: ‘We have seen a high

number of children needing glasses across our opticians in Spain and experts around the world are reporting a sharp increase in myopia in young children. The difficulty with children with poor eye sight is they often don’t realise there is anything wrong before it is identified in an eye test. This means they struggle unnecessarily at school and can be misdiagnosed with learning difficulties simply because of their poor vision. To avoid issues like these, we also

recommend yearly eye tests for children before they go to fulltime education and incorporating an eye test into the “Back to School” routine to pick up any changes early, before it starts to effect their learning.’ According to charity ONCE, theyhave 4,245 members aged 18 and under who are suffering from low vision or blindness and studies show that one out of every four children has an undetected vision problem that may inhibit their progress. Common eye conditions can all be identified with a complete eye test. The sooner that vision problems are detected, the better the outcome. Conditions such as squint and amblyopia (lazy eye) can be treated more effectively if they are picked up earlier. Book a Back to School eye test at Specsavers Ópticas during September and see their range of glasses which are specially designed for children, including a new range of Toy Story glasses. Evans shares weight loss tactic Chris Evans has revealed the extreme dieting tactic he uses to lose weight. The Virgin Radio Breakfast Show host admitted that he sometimes fasts for as long as 16 hours in a bid to shed pounds. Speaking on his show, the 53-yearold opened up about his extreme technique after a member of his team offered him a brownie. He said: "I do this 12 hour fast, which I have never talked about on the radio. But I don't eat for 12 hours a day as it improves everything. 16 hours is even better, but 12 hours is easy especially if you do a breakfast show. "If you get up at silly o'clock, not eating for a 12 hour period is very easy. It is about now [7:40am] I could have it now. I mean I can't really." Chris is also an avid runner and is taking part in the Amsterdam Marathon later this year. He's running to raise funds for charity Dementia Revolution. He said on his show: "One and a half million people are affected by dementia in one way or another.... This is for Dame Barbara Windsor and Scott [her husband]. It is for Dementia Revolution, that is that is why we are going there, that is why we are running." The star is also auctioning off 50 seats on a chartered plane from Farnborough, in Hampshire, to Amsterdam for the charity.

Children on Motorbikes If you ride a motorbike, so long as you are old enough, have a full licence and the vehicle is correctly fitted with the appropriate equipment, you are permitted to carry a passenger. You are also permitted to carry children as passengers, but there are some restrictions to ensure their safety. Firstly, you, the rider, must be over 18. The child passenger must be over 12, although there is an exception to the rule of age, as a child of 7 or above can rise as a passenger being driven by their parent, guardian or person authorised by their parent or guardian, provided all other requirements are met. Height is also important, as if the passenger´s feet don´t reach the footrests correctly, they cannot be carried. The passenger must sit on the rearmost seat, which must be designed to carry passengers. In no case is it permitted for a passenger to sit

between the driver and the handlebars of the motorcycle or moped, which also applies to bicycles incidentally. Depending on your own insurance policy, you may also need additional cover in order to carry passengers, so check our policy before you do. The passenger, like the rider, must wear an approved motorbike helmet and gloves are advised.

Pride of Spain Awards 2019

Last chance to nominate Now in its thirteenth year, the Costa Blanca People’s Pride of Spain Awards celebrates ordinary people who do extraordinary things, with nominees reflecting the core value of giving for the good of other people, and the community at large here on the Costa Blanca. Once you decide what category your nominee fits into you can nominate someone - a family member, a colleague, a community member or even someone you respect and admire from afar - who you feel deserves recognition for what they do or have achieved. At the heart of the Costa Blanca People’s Pride of Spain Awards is Costa Blanca People boss, Claire Richards, who started the original concept and continues to drive the initiative with her hard work and commitment. Claire told us, “When we launched the Costa Blanca People Pride of Spain Awards in 2007, our aim was simple – to unearth and celebrate our unsung heroes - the people who make this community great. It’s hard to believe that it is thirteen years later, and The Pride of Spain Awards have exceeded our wildest expectations. Each

year, we continue to be overwhelmed by the stories of selfless actions, courage, compassion and heroism. This is our chance to celebrate the fact that every day countless expat residents go out of their way to help their neighbours, often receiving little recognition for the extraordinary contributions they make to their communities. All of us know someone who deserves such recognition for their selfless actions. It might be your mum, your sibling, your cousin, your best friend, neighbour or school teacher.

I urge you to take a few minutes and nominate them for a Pride of Spain Award in 2019. On behalf of everyone at the Costa Blanca People, I would like to thank our readers, sponsors, political and community leaders who lend their ongoing support to the Costa Blanca People Pride of Spain Awards.” To nominate your local hero, simply go to http://www.costablancapeople.c om/pride-of-spain-awards/ and fill in the online form. If you don’t have internet access, simply call or visit our office (address on page 57) and we will do the rest for you.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT â– CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

B

efore we really get stuck-in to the weekend action, can anyone recall a more cringe-inducing Soccer Saturday debut than that of Troy Deeney? Firstly, they shouldn't have current players on there in the first place - in my humble, especially ones that are clearly not ready or trained for the job. It's one thing watching Paul Merson struggle and be unable to say someone's name - but Deeney is the current captain of a Premier League side. It takes a lot for me to start thinking, "bring back Kevin Nolan, even he wasn't that bad...." The weekend Premier League action got underway at Anfield where Newcastle's Jetro Willems made a mockery of recent suggestions from Jurgen Klopp that Andrew Robertson is the best left-back in Europe. Yes, yes, Robbo is very good but can he trick his

way inside on to his right then arrow one in top bins? Until I see evidence of that, I remain to be convinced. The early goal didn't exactly make Liverpool sit bolt-up-right in bed having been woken suddenly - it was more of a gentle nudge, push, prod to get them to eventually open their eyes and moan that they didn't want to get up just yet. But, awaken they

for a club. It probably happened before 1992/93 as well, but nobody can be bothered to check. Guardiola was quick to congratulate Liverpool and their fans on lifting the Premier League trophy after a mere five outings and before the kids, back at school, can remember the name of their new teacher. It's starting to become clear why John

Fikayo Tomori

Andrew Watson did and it's now 14 straight Premier League wins in a row which is pretty impressive for a club who has never won this title. Bobby Firmino's assist was the talk of the game and reminds all of us Sunday park players the fine line between looking like a genius and having your manager scream "will you just keep it simple??" when it doesn't quite come off. Liverpool lead by five points after five games, the record margin at this early point in a season. I mean, it's pretty much over - isn't it? Not according to Peppy G. I was asking a Norwich supporting mate of mine how go about beating City and he said "Farke knows" and I assumed he was as baffled as the rest of us - but now I know he was referring to Norwich boss Daniel Farke who, it turns out, does know how to beat Man City. It was a very good day for Buendia as he robbed Nicolas Otamendi to create Norwich's third for Teemu Pukki and, somehow, Norwich held on to stop City beating a promoted side for about the 50th time in a row. As Pep said, Norwich were better in both boxes - even with Sergio Aguero scoring again meaning he is only the third player in Premier League history to score in the opening five matches

Terry kept banging on about someone called Tammy when he was leaving Chelsea. Naturally, we assumed Tammy was a leggy blonde married to one of his teammates, but it turns out he was referring to the young striker - Abraham netted a hat-trick against Wolves, singlehandedly looking to repay the faith put in the kids by Frank Lampard before the clocks go back. And it's not just Abraham, oh no. Fikayo Tomori curled one into the top corner from distance in a way that no centre-back should ever be able to do. Mason Mount, excellent again, finally has some competition for the class swot

moniker and he might no longer be teacher's pet after all. There is the understandable talk about all three being included in England's next squad in October - but what about Frank? Is he already making it clear that he is an England-managerin-waiting and will England finally have to choose who is better between him and Steven Gerrard as they cannot both be picked when Southgate calls it a day? Tottenham gaffer Mauricio Pochettino locked his players in the classroom for an hour during the week and made it clear things needed to improve - and, just like that, they did. Of course, it had nothing to do with the fact that none of them can leave until January now, so they may as well play well enough to be interesting to prospective buyers come the new year and more to do with the fact that Crystal Palace must have thought they were playing at home given their performance. Four goals scored and

MauricioPochettinoi

none for Harry Kane, which doesn't happen very often. Can anyone spot the cunning difference at Old Trafford? Man United put in a performance that almost passed as one from a top-six side in the country, let alone the best club in the world, and there was one key component missing. That's right - Paul Pogba was injured meaning United defended as a unit, attacked as a group and scored their penalty. Considering the pre-match chat was about how Leicester had the better squad and manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can feel quite smug today. It's fair to say a couple of years away from Watford hasn't aged Quique Sanchez Florez particularly well. He also chose the wrong jumper for his return. However, one thing Quique will have noticed pretty quickly was that after two years away Arsenal are still completely the same. The Gunners led 2-0 and were looking as comfortable as they could until they didn't. It's good to see David Luiz has righted all wrongs in that backline, eh? Bournemouth vs Everton on TV definitely felt like one Sky "had to do" rather than actually wanted to but if proved to be moderately entertaining, if only to see Fabian Delph turn a freekick into his own net - don't forget, Delph is the signing of the summer in some Evertonian's minds. A stunning solo goal winner for Southampton's Djenepo no doubt put him on Liverpool's radar for next season and Graham Potter channelled his inner Tony Pulis by naming four centre-backs in Brighton's 1-1 draw with Burnley.

YOUR WEEK IN SPORT â– CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

And so one of the greatest English cricketing summers come to an end. The best bit for me? England winning the World Cup? It's up there. Headingly? Pretty close. England fighting back and drawing the Ashes series late on Sunday evening? Not quite. For me, it was David Warner's batting average as an opener making me feel better about my own game. Sunday started with Shane Warne talking up Warner as having an innings inside him to silence the nay-sayers. To be fair to Warner, he dig in and get his best score of the series - 11. Sunday ended with Jack Leach, only a week ago being written off as a bowler who shouldn't be anywhere a Test attack and only getting a game because he can bat better than most of England's middle order, taking the last two wickets

in two balls and ending the series 2-2. Sure, Australia retain the Ashes but they didn't win them - and they'd made enough of a song-and-dance about how important that was to them after Old Trafford. Both sides leave this series with far more questions than answers. Australia know that Warner is unlikely to ever be that bad again as the next time he faces Stuart Broad in England will probably be in some kind of charity match. The discovery of Marnus and the form of the irritating Matthew Wade - a player who thought it made sense to bring up Bristol when England seemed to have refrained from talking about sandpaper on the field of play - gives them confidence that there are at least some players who can bat around the phenomenal Steve Smith. And, bowling wise, they're alright really - aren't they? As for England, Joe Denly's battling 94 hours after his wife gave birth has to see

him get a fair crack at number three for the winter tour. Rory Burns has been excellent, potentially stepping into 'next captain' territory and actually batted for longer in this Ashes series than Sir Alastair Cook managed in any of his. Ben Stokes, of course, leaves with his reputation enhanced just a smidgen but other than those three nobody else has come close to looking a dead cert for future selection. Except, sadly, they probably will be. Will the selectors and new coach lose faith in Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow and, whisper it quietly, Joe Root between now and the winter tour squad selection? No, they won't. They have an easy out by dropping Jason Roy now, and that will probably be enough. We can't have Buttler and Bairstow in the same side in the winter and it's probably time for Bairstow to take a bit of a break and let Ben Foakes come in and keep. Dom Sibley is bound to get the nod at the top of the order

alongside Burns meaning England might have quite a stable looking topthree, on paper at least. Root keeps his job having scrambled a draw and bats four, Stokes at five with Buttler at six. Bring in Foakes at seven and then we can argue over what blend of bowling attack we have at another point - that's not the area of concern (though, I am still staggered that it took until the final Test to throw Sam Curran the ball and see if he could slow Steve Smith down a bit). This Ashes series does feel like a missed opportunity - bar Steve Smith, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood Australia were there for the taking. Mind you, they could probably say the same for us apart from the incredible Jofra Archer, Stokes, Burns and, so randomly, Leach. Would I have taken a World Cup and a drawn Ashes series if you'd offered it to me at the start of April? Damn right I would have.

Charity golf tournament to help Las Ramblas Golf Society local young golfers Eighty five golfers met at Vistabella Golf course recently to raise funds to encourage young children in the area into the sport. For the second year running the event raised 10,000 euros which will go towards making golf accessible for local children. Local man Anthony Flood had the idea of a youth academy after realising that there were no local affordable facilities in the area for young would-be golf players. Anthony approached Vistabella with the idea working in conjunction with the Neil Fyfe Golf Foundation and the Paul Lawrie foundation. The idea was very well received and the academy is now entering its second

year and has around 30 children signed up with many more attending on Saturdays to try out the sport. The Academy offers a golf morning at a cost of 5 euros for an hour lesson with all equipment provided. The recent charity golf event was supported by the Plaza Golf Society who played Vistabella with a shot gun start. All 18 holes where sponsored and prizes were awarded to the top ten players. There were also prizes for the longest drives for the lady's and men Budding golfers at the Academy with a best Lady prize and trophy also fundraising auction was held at the Ale being won by Deborah Rose. In an odd House, Villamartin Plaza. quirk of fate, organiser Anthony Flood The Paul Lawrie Foundation (PLF) was was overall champion of the day with launched in 2001; two years after Paul 40points. The prize giving and a famously won the 1999 Open at Carnoustie. It provides opportunities for juniors of any age to start playing golf, compete at golf and improve their capabilities to the highest level. In a similar vein the Neil Fyfe Foundation was established by family and friends of Scottsman Neil a keen golfer, green-keeper and caddy following his death in a road accident in America. The foundation helps upcoming, talented young golfers by supporting their pursuit of success through funding which goes towards equipment, coaching, Anthony flood, Miguel Navarro course pro, Joaquin Rocamora course manager, travel and other expenses. Steve Fyfe Foundation Founder, and Pearse Mc Murray course pro.

Thanks for their inspiration this week go to Berry Gordy Jnr and all the artists connected with Tamla Motown over the years. Monday last saw us compete in a 2 ball better ball competition and I heard it through the grapevine thatour latest recruit Dean Tracey, together with his partner Anne Marie Weishart, must have wondered what’s going on after the rest of their team failed to turn up. I’m pleased to report though that they recorded second spot with 41 points. Our Supremes today were Olga Douglas and Marleen Billen coming in with an excellent 46 points. It really was a ball of confusion on the Al Green. Graham Murray had an eventful day hitting quite a number of Drifters into the barrancos leaving his partner Yvonne Phipps, overheard saying, please don’t leave me this way. Wednesday’s Stableford sawFour Tops (2’s) today which went to Yvonne Phipps, Olga Douglas, Bryan Neal and Rachel Lee. For Nigel Price it was a question of ain’t no mountain high enough on the first and third holesas he managed to lose his tee

shot on both. For John Shervell it was signed, sealed, delivered as he took 1st place with 35 points. It was the same old song as yet again Nick and Rachel Lee appeared in the top Jackson Five. For myself it was a case of I wish it would rain after totally messing up the last two holes. Olga Douglas, Graham Murray, Hendrick Oldenziel and Mike Chapman were wondering what becomes of the broken hearted, after having scored 84 points in Friday’s 6x6x6, they took 2nd slot. Dancing in the street though, with 88 points, were Richard Connock, Pete Dunn, myself and the fictional Albert. Richard was our very own rockin’ robin today with five birdies! For a full explanation on how our various team games are played and a whole load of useful information please visit lasramblasgolfsociety.com and select ‘Society Handbook.’ Thanks this week go to our resident professional, Terry Field, for his contribution on ‘When to suggest major swing corrections to your opponent.’ Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

Another hot and humid day for golf at Vistabella. The greens are recovering well after the hollow tinning, although the bunkers really suffered after the storms earlier in the week.
