MISSING BRITISH MAN The British Embassy in Spain is appealing to Costa Blanca People readers to help find a missing Briton, last seen in the Benidorm area. Mr Philip John PEARCE, who is 68 years old, was last seen on 9th September in Benidorm, and his family has not been able to find him since then. He is 5ft 6inc (170cm), medium build, blue eyes and speaks with a strong Somerset accent. When he went missing, he was wearing jeans, a striped polo neck top and black shoes, although he could have changed clothes since then. He has been reported missing by his family to the police in Benidorm, who are looking for him. Lee Pearce, Mr. Pearce’s son said: “We really want to find our dad as soon as possible. We think he may be confused and in need of help. If you do see him please contact the police straight away.” If anyone has any information relating to his whereabouts, they should call the National Police on 091.

British government meets UK nationals in Spain Secretary of State for Exiting the EU, Steve Barclay, meets with representatives of UK Nationals in Madrid

S

ecretary of State for Exiting the EU, Steven Barclay, met with members of three of the groups representing UK nationals in Spain: Brexpats, ECREU and EuroCitizens. They discussed the key issues affecting the more than 300,000 British citizens who have made Spain their home. During his visit to Madrid, the Secretary of State also spoke at an “Informative Breakfast” hosted by Spanish news agency Europa Press and met with business representatives. He also discussed the importance of citizens’ rights during his meeting with the Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell. In a video message to UK Nationals living in Spain, Steve Barclay said: “It’s been really useful to meet citizens’ rights groups representing British nationals living in Spain to hear about their concerns on things like healthcare. We are absolutely committed to protecting healthcare – we are in discussions with the Spanish government on that. Through the Royal Decree, the Spanish Government has given good support to citizens here, compared to other member states.” He added that: “We are committed

and cities across Spain – urging people to take action ahead of 31 October, and builds on the Consulates’ outreach and pop-up events. The new information campaign asks UK nationals to take action to prepare for Brexit by checking the Living in Spain Guide at gov.uk/livinginspain and: • Apply for residency • Register for healthcare • Exchange their UK driving licence for

a Spanish one • Check their passport is valid for travel The Embassy also strongly recommends that British nationals living in Spain join our “Brits in Spain” Facebook community, where we promote the latest outreach meetings, pop-up events and facebook live conversations, and try to keep people up to date with the latest developments. to getting a deal – that is the best way to safeguard citizens’ rights. And we will ensure that we continue to support them as we go through the Brexit process.” The video message from the Secretary of State can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/jO1QQDdVww8 The Secretary of State’s visit follows the UK Government’s launch of a major information campaign urging UK nationals living in Spain to get ready for Brexit on 31 October. It is part of a wider communications campaign effort across Europe. UK nationals in Spain will receive information about specific actions they need to take to keep their rights and access to services in Spain, including around residency, healthcare, driving licences and passports. The campaign will use multiple channels – from Photo (from left to right): Richard Hill (Brexpats in Spain), Nigel Aston (Eurocitzens), Anne Hernandez (Brexpats in Facebook posts to Spain), John Richards (Eurocitzens), Steve Barclay (Secretary of State for the Department for EU Exit), Ambassador Hugh billboard posters in towns Elliott, Margaret and Gerald Hales (ECREU (Expat Citizens Rights in the EU) and John Carvick (Eurocitzens). BITE SIZE UK officials to support Thomas Cook customers NEWS: Downton Abbey in English A reminder about movies in English - For those of you who are not aware, it might be interesting to know that IMF cinema in Torrevieja shows a movie in V.O. (that is, the original soundtrack – usually in English – with Spanish subtitles). The screening information changes on a Thursday for a Friday so the information the Costa Blanca People has this week is valid until this Thursday (26th September). The English language movie may change on Friday, or if it is proving popular, may remain for another week. As always, it is best to check online before visiting the cinema to be sure (https://cinesimf.com/es/cartelera /imf-torrevieja) and remember to look for V.O. or VOSE which will indicate the movie in English. As an extra bonus, Mondays and Wednesdays have a reduced rate of just €5 entry.

• Thomas Cook has ceased trading so all holidays are now cancelled • Government scheme will guarantee hotel costs for ATOL-protected holidaymakers • UK Civil Aviation Authority launches repatriation from all Thomas Cook destinations Thomas Cook Group, including the UK tour operator and airline, has ceased trading with immediate effect. All Thomas Cook bookings, including flights and holidays, have now been cancelled. There are currently more than 150,000 UK Thomas Cook customers abroad. A British Embassy spokesperson told the Costa Blanca People, “We know that a company with such long-standing history ceasing trading will be very distressing for its customers, employees, hoteliers and other suppliers, and our thoughts are with everyone affected by this news.” The Government has asked the UK Civil Aviation Authority to launch a repatriation programme over the next two weeks, from Monday 23 September to Sunday 6 October, to bring Thomas Cook customers back to the UK. The Civil Aviation Authority has secured a fleet of aircraft from around the world to fly passengers back to the UK. It is also contacting hotels accommodating Thomas Cook customers as part of a holiday package to let them know that the cost of the accommodation for these customers will be covered by the ATOL scheme. The Civil Aviation Authority has launched a special website, thomascook.caa.co.uk, where affected customers can find details and information on repatriation flights, as well as advice on accommodation for both ATOL and non-ATOL customers. Due to the significant scale of the situation, some disruption is inevitable, but the Civil Aviation Authority

will endeavour to get people home as close as possible to their planned dates. Customers currently overseas should not travel to the airport until their flight back to the UK has been confirmed on the dedicated website. ATOL Protected passengers with future bookings are entitled to a full refund for their cancelled holiday. Passengers currently overseas may also make claims for the cost of replacing ATOL protected parts of their trip, or for out-of-pocket expenses as a result of delayed flights home. The Civil Aviation Authority will be launching a service to manage all refunds by Monday 30 September, once the flying operation has progressed. This refunds service will seek to process all refunds within 60 days of full information being received. Richard Moriarty, Chief Executive of the UK Civil Aviation Authority, said “News of Thomas Cook’s collapse is deeply saddening for the company’s employees, customers, hoteliers and other suppliers and we appreciate that more than150,000 people currently abroad will be anxious about how they will now return to the UK. “The government has asked us to support Thomas Cook customersand we have launched a programme to bring them home, which also includes costs to hotels accommodating Thomas Cook customers under the Air Travel Trust’s ATOL scheme.” Anyone affected by this news can check the CAA’s dedicated website, thomascook.caa.co.uk, for advice and information.

dramatic arrest of a wanted fugitie who had been on the run from Italian police after escaping through the window of a police station in Turin. The 35 year old man jumped from a height of four metres to escape custody in Italy after he had been arrested for rape. Officers in Italy believed that the man had fled to Spain and contacted their Spanish counterparts in the National Police – specialist officers whose remit is locating fugitives on the run in Spain began the investigation which led to the arrest in Torrevieja this week. Reports claim that the moment the man had been charged with rape, he surprised prosecutors, police and even his own solicitor by jumping through a window. Once outside, somewhat stunned, he ran to the station in Turin and disappeared. After several weeks of investigations by Spanish and Italian police, he was found to be hiding in a Torrevieja apartment. It took five police officers to arrest him this week.

Dead tuna washed ashore Over 100 tuna fish have washed ashore in a state of decomposition along the coastline of the Vega Baja. The bluefin tuna have been found on beaches at Mil Palmeras, Pilar de la Horadada and Orihuela Costa with many floating off the coast of Torrevieja and Guardamar. A spokesperson for the Association of Naturalists of the Southeast (ANSE), Pedro García commented that the fish are believed to have come from a fish farm in San Pedro del Piñatar and it is likely that they were killed during the recent storms and ‘gota fria’. However, the owners of the fish farm have not yet confirmed if this is the case. To prevent a potential health hazard, sanitation trucks were deployed to the Murcia coastline to dispose of the rotting fish. Reports indicate that some locals, when the tuna were first washed ashore, took to the beach to fillet the fish and take bags of the meat away with them, despite the obvious health risk as it is unclear how the fish died. The tunas are large – weighing between 150 and 200 kilos each. They were captured live in the Balearic Sea and brought to the fish farm in San Pedro for ‘fattening’ before export to Asia.

Low-cost airline Ryanair has launched a massive offer of cheap flight valid between October and May in order to offset losses it is likely to suffer as a result of the September strikes in Spain. Every Friday and Sunday this month, and the last Friday and Saturday of September will see cabin crew and pilots downing tools throughout the country in protest over the mass redundancies announced by the Irish airline due to its decision to close its bases in Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Tenerife South and GironaCosta Blanca. Spain's representative for Ryanair, Alejandra Ruiz, customers can now book their flights for winter or spring breaks,

which have been scheduled and are waiting to be snapped up. And a million flights with destinations and origins all over Europe which are booked before this Sunday (29th September) will have their prices slashed by up to €30 each way. They cover trips starting next month and up to and including May 2020. Flight destinations offered include connections between the UK and Europe, despite the Brexit deadline being on 31st October and no sign of a deal being struck as yet. Anyone travelling on Ryanair this weekend should allow plenty of extra time before their flight and be prepared for possible delays or cancellations. Delays of three hours or more, or cancellations, for short-haul flights are automatically subject to a flat compensation figure of €250, which can be applied for via any airline's customer service department.

The day was hosted by Stevie Spit and Casey Shaddock, who kindly allowed the event to take place at the wonderful Villamartin Plaza. Entertainment

individuals. Funds were significantly increased by a sizeable donation by money exchange experts Moneycorp. Their staff have been donating through a 'gofundme' page and Moneycorp has pledged to triple the amount raised. The final was provided by The New Jersey Boys, Abba Elite, Al Joel, Paul James Allen, Flashback, Michael Jackson Tribute, Jay Markwick, Stuart Sinclair and the wonderful Footworks Dance Academy. Many people brought donations of food, blankets and clothing – 5 van loads of items were collected - which will be distributed to the towns most in need of immediate aid. Money

was also raised by direct donations and by a prize raffle with prizes generously donated by local businesses and

total will be revealed later this week. Che restaurants have also pledged a percentage of their takings this week (Monday night and Tuesday night, if you’re thinking of eating out) which is incredibly generous. For now, the running total raised is at least €10,500 and we should be able to post a final update on the

total raised later in the week as further donations are finalised. All of the donations will be managed and distributed by Help Vega Baja, a wonderful registered charity here on the Coast. Claire concluded by saying, “I want to personally thank everyone who made the day such a runaway success and thanks to those who bought raffle tickets! Thanks also to Michelle and the team from Help Vega Baja for their invaluable help and support on the day. We ran out of time on the day so we drew the raffle the following day. The winners can collect their prizes from the Costa Blanca People office from Wednesday as we are closed on Tuesdays.” A full list of prizes and winning ticket numbers on page 51 of this week’s Costa Blanca People.

Bottled gas prices cheapest in three years Bottled gas has dropped in price again for the fifth time in a row and is now at its lowest in three years. As on the day of the price plummet, butane gas cost €12.78 for a standard 12.5-kilo orange bottle – the lighter-weight silver bottles not being subject to State price control, meaning they are usually more expensive – but has now fallen to €12.15, the cheapest it has been since September 2016 when it sat at €11.72. Prices are reviewed every two months, and the last five have seen it drop consistently from its near-record price of €15.33 back in November 2018, the highest price in three years. It had not fallen below €13 since March 2017 until the previous review in July this year. Spain's ministry for environmental transition says the 'dramatic fall' in raw material price – down by just under 17% from summer - had spurred the end retail cost reductions over 2019, and the consumer price tag would have been even lower than it is now if it were not for an increase in transport costs of 7.86% and the depreciation of the euro against the US dollar of 0.59 percent. Mains gas is still not widespread in Spain, only really being available in large cities and their suburbs and satellite towns – out in the wider provinces, even in densely-populated coastal areas, gas pipe infrastructure remains a rare commodity. To this end, a high number of

households still use butane gas bottles for cooking and heating. An estimated eight million residents continue to buy the standard orange bottles, although the actual number using butane gas as a whole is likely to be higher since it is more difficult to calculate exactly how many purchase the silver bottles direct from retailers. Orange bottles are delivered to homes and business premises on demand if the owner or occupant has a contract with a supply company, such as REPSOL – here, the cost will normally be a couple of euros higher than the standard €12.15 to cover the door-todoor service. Customers on a contract will receive a letter every five years asking them to call the gas company to arrange a safety inspection to validate the insurance that covers them for third party damage caused by their gas installations, the

result of which will usually be a replacement of rubber tubes and cost in region of €60 for the entire transaction. Those without a contract, who buy their gas bottles from petrol stations, should arrange their own inspection with a qualified gas engineering company. Neither REPSOL nor any other reputable company will 'cold-call' announcing an inspection on the door or by phone – the customer should be the one to make contact and arrange a date and time, and confirm the price before any work starts upon the contractor's arrival. Legitimate gas companies will not be offended if you call their office to accredit the identity of an engineer at the door – in fact, their inspectors even encourage householders to do so and will praise them for it, since this helps prevent fraud.

Second fatal military plane crash in Mar Menor

The student and instructor who were killed in a plane crash last Wednesday afternoon have been identified. Commander Daniel Melero Ordoñez, 50, from Cadiz, and third-year student Rosa Almiron Otero, 20, from Cordoba died when their aircraft smashed into Murcia’s Mar Menor at around 12:00pm. The two soldiers were taking part in a training flight, before an engine fault saw the pair attempt to land on La Manga. The Air Force propeller plane, a T.35 Pillan, is commonly used in basic training at the Air Academy and was on a training flight. It had performed several different manoeuvres, but on its third take-off the pilot reported that the engine had stopped. The flight was the plane’s third in 24 hours without any problems having been reported, and the craft had been safety checked that morning. This model has been used at the Academia General del Aire since replacing the previous Bucker and Mentor training aircraft in the late 1980s.

The top speed of the plane is 311km/h. San Javier city hall ordered area beaches to be closed until further notice in the wake of the accident. Rescue teams have now recovered both bodies from the site of the accident near Santiago de la Ribera Yacht Club. The water in the Mar Menor is notoriously shallow and where the plane lunged nose first into the water is just two metres deep and so the tail of the aircraft was clearly visible. Fernando Lopez Miras, the president of the regional government of Murcia, hurried to the scene from San Pedro del Pinatar, where he was inspecting the damage caused by the Gota Fria. The Mayor of San Javier, Jose Luengo, also arrived at the scene. The tragedy comes just three weeks after pilot fellow Air Force pilot Francisco Marin Nuñez lost his life when his plane crashed into the sea just 100 metres from La Manga. He was able to eject before the plane hit the water but his remains were later found.

Wife kills 84 year old husband with a plate

An 84 year-old man who was in hospital for ten days after his wife allegedly hit him with a plate has died, raising his wife’s charges from attempted murder to murder. Police were alerted to the incident Desamparados, Orihuela by the couple’s son who was concerned the injuries he saw were the result of an assault by his 83-year old mother. It is believed that the Mother called her son at 6am in the morning of the incident to tell him that his father had had an accident. When he arrived the son saw the man lying in the garage in a pool of blood. The Mother said she had heard sounds in the early hours of the morning but did not get up to investigate and it wasn’t until a

few hours later she found her husband. She said his injuries were the result of a fall or an accident. The man had two serious head injuries and was taken by ambulance to hospital. Meanwhile, the son went to the local police station to pass on his concerns. He explained that the couple’s relationship had deteriorated over several years and that the previous day the couple had argued. He was alarmed by their Mother’s lack of concern or distress over her husband’s condition and thought that she had caused the injuries. When questioned by officers at her home, there were several discrepancies in the woman’s story. When a forensic team processed the house they

found traces of blood on the walls despite the fact it was evident the house had been thoroughly cleaned. In the rubbish officers discovered pieces of a ceramic plate, one of which had hair and blood stains, which police believe to belong to the victim. The autopsy attributed cause of death to the use of a blunt instrument and also suggested an attack, rather than an accident in the home. The wife was arrested and appeared in court. She was placed on remand to face charges of attempted murder. Following the death of her husband these were increased to charges of murder. She will stay on remand in prison until she goes to trial.

Prieto (Baritone), Nuria Maddaloni (soprano) and Paula Ferrández (pianist). After the soloists, the Francisco Vallejos Choir

and the Symphony Youth Choir will perform. On Saturday, September 28th, again from 9pm, there will be performances from the Illice Augusta Choral Group of Elche; the Young Choir of Santander (Cantabria); the Orpheo Ganbera Abesbatza Chamber Choir, from Leioa (Vizcaya) and the Ainur Chamber Choir from Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.

GBP / EUR UPDATE It was a week of ups and downs for the pound. The Prime Minister travelled to Luxembourg at the beginning of the week to begin talks with EC President Juncker and this coincided with a rise in the pound against the euro as reports surfaced of an alternative solution to the issue of the Irish border. The reports suggests that Boris Johnson is set to reveal the plans at the UN next week and will also conduct talks with other EU leaders at the event. Little was revealed about what happened behind closed doors between Johnson and Juncker and the market focused more on the data released this week. In recent weeks, the pound had recovered some of the summer’s losses and made some gains against the US dollar as oil prices put pressure on the greenback but was pushed lower ahead of the release of inflation data. CPI inflation for August rose to 1.7% and the news caused the pound to fall. Inflationary growth was shown to be at its slowest rate since December 2016. While some experts felt this news made it more likely that the Bank of England would cut rates, the BoE held rates at 0.75% and suggested that the rates would remain until the uncertainty around Brexit had been cleared up. The latest development was the acceleration of the deadline for a proposal from the UK after the leaders

of France and Finland proposed a date of 30th September to allow for proper scrutiny. Views are mixed on what impact this may have – some believe it will decrease the chances of a nodeal Brexit but others feel it will mean the UK loses ground in the negotiations if the EU rejects the proposal. Whichever is the case, the next few weeks may see some volatility in sterling until the details are cleared up. The euro had a tough week despite German investor sentiment coming in better than expected, rising from -43.6 to 22.4 in August. The euro fell against the US dollar as investors considered the latter a safe haven and Europe considered the pressure of upcoming US tariffs on European goods beginning in November. The tariffs will take effect on the same day that Christine Lagarde will be assuming her role as the new President of the European Central Bank, as approved by the European parliament this week. At the moment, developments elsewhere such as the UK’s Brexit stance and the ongoing US-China trade war are having an impact on the central currency. As there are changes at the top of EU leadership in the coming months and matters elsewhere come to a head, there may be an opportunity for the euro to take control of its destiny once more.

Man arrested for murdering his brother A 53 year old man has been remanded in custody this week, accused of murdering his 50 year old brother. The man was arrested by Guardia Civil in Guardamar del Segura after he is believed to have stabbed the victim to death before attempting to mutilate the body. The suspect appeared in court in Torrevieja on Thursday and was remanded in custody while the investigation is carried out. Officers believe that he began to dismember the body in order to make identification

difficult – the victim’s fingerprints had been removed and he had a deep cut to the abdomen which is believed to have been post mortem. It is not yet clear if the murder was premeditated. The body was discovered on Tuesday by local police in Guardamar. The victim, originally from Madrid, had been enrolled in an employment workshop through the town hall’s department of social services. Usually of good attendance, he had not turned up for

work for several days so those running the workshop became concerned. Social Services called to his house but got no response. His brother had told town hall staff that the victim had left for Madrid to go to work at a restaurant. However, when Social Services reported the incident to the local police, they made a point of visiting the man’s address and detected a suspicious smell coming from inside. Fearing the man may be dead, they entered the property and discovered his body.

Conversations in English Representatives from Torrevieja town hall paid a visit to the first day of English conversation classes, run by British volunteers. The activity is completely free and open to people of all ages who would like to improve their English. Councillor for Youth, Diana Box Alonso, and Councillor for International

Relations, Gitte Lund Thomsen visited the first class of the new term at the CIAJ youth centre. Classes have been running since 2012 and are aimed at people who want to improve their fluency in English and want a chance to speak the language in a real setting. The only requirement to join is to have a level of at least preintermediate English (A2). Conversations are offered by a group of volunteers, coordinated by Crystal East who has run the class since its inception. All of the volunteers give their time and services completely free in order to help others improve their English skills. Another objective of the conversation class is to encourage integration of people of different nationalities.

Almoradi Meal Club The AMC is back again and we will be eating at some old favourites and lots of new venues throughout the coming months ahead. Anybody wishing to join this happy band is more than welcome. Look the group up on Facebook or mail davedanie@gmail.com for more information.

Brits registered in Spain jumps amid Brexit uncertainty The majority of Britons who decide to move countries head for Spain – indeed the British community has not stopped growing since registers were first established. But now it’s not just the sun-soaked, relaxed lifestyle that is driving the trend. It is also uncertainty regarding the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union, a process commonly referred to as “Brexit.” The number of British nationals who are now officially registered in Spain – most of them in Andalusia and the Valencia region – has risen by a record 10 percent since December 2018. The lack of clarity over Brexit is prompting many British citizens to register with the Spanish authorities – either at an Immigration Office or at a designated local police station – something they perhaps would never have done were it not for the potential imminent divorce of the UK from Europe on October 31. There are now 365,967 Britons officially registered in Spain. Figures provided by the Interior Ministry in response to questions from EL PAÍS reveal that the numbers are rising at an accelerating rate, and it is likely that they will go up even more

quickly immediately before and after the Brexit deadline. The campaigns carried out by the British embassies abroad – particularly in Spain – are also

responsible for the development. Although the data does not distinguish between new arrivals and Britons who were already residing unofficially in the country, sources consulted by EL PAÍS believe that a good many fall into the latter category. “We are advising British nationals who have been in Spain longer than three months and want to remain here to legalize their [residency] status,” says Sarah-Jane Morris, one of the three British consuls in Spain. “And the data suggests they are taking this seriously.”

Residency Besides those Britons who have been officially resident in Spain for years, there is also a floating population of UK nationals, some

of whom only spend part of the year in the country. There are, of course, also those who reside in Spain on a permanent basis but have failed to make their residence official as they were already guaranteed enough rights thanks to their home country’s membership of the EU. “Some had probably not thought of doing it, but with Brexit it is important to get residency papers,” says Morris, who is responsible for UK citizens in the centre, north and southeast of Spain. There are even more people flocking to register now than directly after the 2016 referendum, which saw 52percent of the UK vote to leave the EU. During that period, the number of Brits registered rose by just 4.6 percent, according to data from Spain’s Labour Ministry. The data of the Brits registered in Spain show that the British community is concentrated along the coast, predominantly in Alicante and Málaga, and more than a third of residents are over 65. “The typical British national on the coast is probably in retirement,” says Morris. “While in cities such as Madrid and Barcelona they tend to be people who are working.”

Is your pension pot wisely invested? T

he favourite funds of people living off their investments in retirement have delivered handsomely over the past few years, new research shows. A saver who put a £100,000 pension pot into the best‐selling Fundsmith Equity in spring 2015 would be sitting on £165,100 now ‐ even if they had made withdrawals of £5,000 a year. The pension freedom reforms launched in 2015 mean a saver can now keep their pot invested and draw an income from it, rather than buy an annuity which provides a guaranteed income for life. The good news is that so far, pension freedom investors have benefited from strong stock market returns and even better active fund selection, in most cases generating a golden combination of income and capital preservation. Pension freedoms have seen many older people taking active control of their retirement investments for the first time, and many find choosing just one fund a tempting idea. There are plenty of investment firms touting funds to accommodate them. 'Multi‐asset' funds hold shares, bonds and other investments, are well diversified, and avoid anything too exotic that could suddenly skew performance. However, investing in just one fund contradicts an important tenet of investing, that you shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket. The key is to know how your money is invested and spread your risks as widely as possible. If you currently have a pension fund and are not sure how well it is performing or are thinking about taking control of your pension, then Seagate Wealth can help you make the right decision. We offer a range of pension solutions that offer our clients flexibility and control to ensure the best outcome for their pension.

Warm colours for autumn decor upgrade Think of your fence as the backdrop to your backyard: It’s not the star of the show, but everything looks a little better when it’s in perfect shape. Give it a facelift with a fresh coat of allweather-proof stain.

wood, or even gravel — to create a new terrace or outdoor room.

Stain your deck From neighbourhood barbecues and pool parties to al fresco weeknight dinners, your deck sees a lot of action in the warm months. Refresh and protect it with a reliable stain.

Add an outdoor fire pit Create an (almost) all-season backyard by adding a fire pit for s’more-filled summer nights and cozy fall evenings. There’s a style for every taste on the market; this 30-inch option (with a spark screen cover) has a decorative bronzed steel base that would work well on a stone patio or in the yard.

Try hard-scaping Your backyard doesn’t have to be one big expanse of grass (that can be a headache to take care of ). For something different, add hardscaping — it could be stone, pavers, bricks,

Plant a colourful and fragrant butterfly garden Flower beds can be a pain to maintain, so opt for something a little more wild: a butterfly garden that’s blissfully lowmaintenance. Plant fuschia aster, bright pink cosmos, warm goldenrod, and monarch-favourite butterfly weed for a rainbow of blooms, many of which are perennials and will come back year after year.

Create an outdoor lounge

Turn your patio — or even just a corner of your backyard — into a plush, relaxing lounge. While a comfy outdoor sofa is often the cornerstone of an al fresco living room, you can easily create a napworthy escape with some oversized floor pillows and extra blankets. Or heck, just string a hammock up and idle away the hours.

Plant an edible garden Whether you have a large plot of land or just a terrace with a few containers, create a garden that looks good while providing you with fresh food. Plant your basics — tomatoes, herbs, lettuce, peppers, cucumbers, string beans — and add some unexpected varieties: savoy cabbage and winter red kale make for striking (and healthy) decoration, while many fruit trees, such as figs, pears, cherries, will thrive in containers. Bonus: Tending the plants is a great activity for the kids.

Change up the lighting Instead of a single source of light from a sconce or flood light attached to your house, add ambiance with a variety of fixtures. This picture-perfect patio uses an outdoor floor lanterns and tabletop candles with LED lights hung overhead.

Fun in the sun for Huntington’s See what the U3A On a sunny Sunday in September friends and family came together for a BBQ cooked by Joey and Jim, Chefs from T.J's restaurant in Benijofar to raise funds for the Huntington´s Disease Association Costa Blanca. After enjoying the delicious food people danced to live music played by Barry Young. Towards the end of the evening some guests joined in for Karaoke. The generosity of all those attending, and in particular Joey, Jim and Barry for providing their time free of charge, and all volunteers helping on the day, was warmly welcomed by the President who announced that ticket sales and the raffle raised a magnificent 523 Euros. The Association´s President said: “We are desperate to find a lock up facility in Almoradi, preferably close to the El Bañet area. Clearly as a charity we are unable to pay commercial rates and we are hoping that a local business might have a facility that could be made available at a discounted rate. Cannes

Cannes is a city located on the French Riviera. It is a commune located in the Alpes-Maritimes department, and host city of the annual Cannes Film Festival, Midem, and Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The city is known for its association with the rich and famous, its luxury hotels and restaurants, and for several conferences. Basking in the sun of the French Riviera, Cannes sparkles with glamour and exclusivity. This legendary seaside resort has all the glitz and allure of the Côte d'Azur: private beaches, marinas filled with luxury yachts, stylish boulevards, elegant Belle Epoque hotels, and fashionable restaurants. In an enchanting setting on Golfe de la Napoule bay, Cannes is blessed with a balmy Mediterranean climate. The weather is mild yearround and perfect for sunbathing by the beach from May through October. Leafy palm trees grace the streets of Cannes, and subtropical flowers flourish throughout the city, giving visitors the impression of being in paradise. The prestigious Film Festival of Cannes has been an important event since it began in 1946. Drawing famous movie stars from around the world, this annual redcarpet gala has earned an international reputation for promoting the art of filmmaking. One of the most fashionable streets on the French Riviera, this palm-lined boulevard is the center of tourist activity in Cannes. The Boulevard de la Croisette is lined by Belle Epoque hotels, such as the historic InterContinental Carlton Cannes, a marvelous example of grand French Art Nouveau architecture, designed by Charles Dalmas. Visitors can also admire the opulent villas and upscale boutiques. The boulevard extends from the new Palais des Festivals to the lovely "La Roseraie" park at the Square du 8 Mai 1945, with splendid private beaches on the sandy shoreline. Along this stretch, the beachfront promenade is a great place for strolling and people-watching. The promenade is appreciated for its magnificent views of the gulf and the Lérins Islands in the distance of the Mediterranean Sea. Beyond La Roseraie park is the idyllic Port Pierre Canto, with its rows of luxury yachts docked at the harbor. Also within walking distance is another harbor, the Port de la Pointe Croisette, the departure point for regattas organized by the Yacht Club of Cannes. The yacht club also has a sailing school. Another spot for water sports enthusiasts and sunbathers is the nearby Port Palm Beach, a quiet public beach on the western side of Pointe Croisette with a snack bar and restroom facilities. Perched on the slopes of Mont Chevalier above

the bay, the Le Suquet district represents the original fishing village. In a picturesque hillside setting, this area offers exceptional views as well as Old World charm. Le Suquet has retained some of the ambience of centuries ago. Tourists are delighted by the traffic-free quarter with its narrow old staircases, pleasant courtyards, and interesting historic remnants, such as the city's ancient walls. At the heart of Le Suquet, the old church, Eglise du Suquet, and the 11th-century Tour du Mont Chevalier watchtower dominate the skyline. From the top of the watchtower, there is a wonderful panoramic outlook onto the beach and the bay all the way out to the Lérins Islands. Another joy of visiting Le Suquet is wandering the quaint old streets. One of the old town's main shopping streets is the Rue Meynadier. This bustling pedestrian street is renowned for its specialty gourmet boutiques. Another important commercial street a few blocks away at the edge of Le Suquet is the Rue d'Antibes. A shopping destination for French Riviera fashions, the street is lined with designer prêt-à-porter clothing boutiques. Of all the things to do on the French Riviera, the Festival de Cannes is the most exciting. With all the glitter of celebrity, this red-carpet event is a top tourist attraction and is definitely one of the biggest moments of the year in Cannes. The festival draws movie stars and filmmakers from all over the world, as well as crowds of fans and journalists. Originally this film festival was established to rival the Venice Film Festival. The Festival de Cannes has earned an international reputation for discovering, supporting, and promoting excellent films. Cannes is famous for its fine sandy beaches, with gorgeous views and calm Mediterranean waters ideal for bathing. Including the nearby îles de Lérin and Estérel coastline, there are seven kilometers of beach property in Cannes. With so many options, there is something for every visitor. While many of the beaches in Cannes are private property owned by hotels, there are several beaches open to the public. These include the Macé Beach and the Zamenhof Beach, located off the Boulevard de la Croisette. These beaches charge a small fee for use of the lounge chairs and parasols. Also available for public use (and free of charge) are the Plage de la Casino along the Boulevard de la Croisette; La Bocca Beach, a quiet beach with gorgeous views and golden sand; the Plages du Midi, a long sandy beach near the center of Cannes; and Mouré Rouge Beach near the fishing ports. The lesser-known Les Rochers beach is the best choice for snorkeling.

I gave up everything

I want to retire

My partner has been working in the middle east for many years. He is away for a month each time, and then for one month he returns home. I discovered he had a second mobile. He hid it well, but I went hunting because I suspected something. He tried to deny it at first but then admitted that he has another woman, and a 7 year old child! Now he says he isn't coming back to me.

My wife and I married late in life and had two girls who are now 18 and 20. I should have retired from work two years ago. However the girls were young and are still dependent on us. Now my employers have suggested I leave this year at 67, and I really do want to go. However, the girls are used to a certain lifestyle, that will no longer be available to them.

Presumably this other woman did not know about you either. You are hurt now, and it will take a long time to get over the betrayal but you know in your heart that you are better off without this man. It will be better for you that he is in another country so that you won’t have to see him again. See your Solicitor and sort out the practical things if you have a shared home etc. Nurse your wounds for a while and then concentrate on finding the strength to carry on with your life with someone more deserving. Therapy would help.

I assume you will be worse off financially when you retire. If your girls don’t understand why life cannot be the same as before, you must sit them down, get your accounts out, and show them exactly how much money goes out of the house in terms of costs, and how much will now be coming in, in terms of your reduced pension. Sacrifices will have to be made and they should help towards running the household by working themselves and paying for their keep. If they want the luxuries they have been used to they will have to pay for them themselves - it‘s as simple as that.

Judge authorises c-section despite mother’s refusal

An Elche judge authorised emergency surgical intervention on Wednesday to save the life of a 7 month old fetus after its mother refused to follow medical advice because she wanted a natural birth. The hospital had to go to emergency court on Wednesday night after a woman who was 32 weeks pregnant refused to allow doctors to perform a caesarean section. The medical team at Elche general hospital advised the mother that the umbilical cord was blocked and the baby could die because it would not receive the oxygen and nutrients it would need to survive. The mother, who wanted a natural birth for cultural reasons, refused. However, both the judge and the Prosecutor's Office authorized the medical team to perform the surgery. Both court and hospital sources

claimed that they have never had to intervene like this before. The child, when born by c-section, was admitted to the Neonatal ICU and is said to be doing well. This complication, related to the umbilical cord, can cause problems in the development of the fetus, not receiving oxygen or nutrients correctly and, sometimes, as was the case in this instance, it can put the child's life in immediate danger. Depending on how far along the pregnancy is, it is often decided to induce delivery or perform a c-section to avoid further complications. Because of the parents’ refusal to allow the emergency surgery to take place, the court will now closely monitor the development of the baby to ensure that the parents provide the necessary medical care.

SHOULD YOUR CHILDREN INFLUENCE YOUR DECISION, WHEN BUYING A HOME? Rebecca Serwotka Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! Featured on Best Buy Spain – Property TV – Sky Channel 189.

A

re you looking to buy a property, and have children under 18 years old? How much does their opinion matter to you, about what type of property you should buy? 55% of homebuyers said that yes, their children’s opinion factored into their decision, whereas 74% of homebuyers with children up to 36 years of age said they only took their opinion into consideration. Of course psychologists say that children should be involved in making any big decisions, but we all know children’s opinions can change very quickly! What they see on the internet, and watch on television has an influence on their current likes and dislikes. They can become too fixated on certain features as they don’t have the ability or understanding to look at the bigger picture. I’ve seen children start crying because their parents wanted to purchase a home without a swimming pool, which made them walk away and lose the home of their dreams, all because they focused on what their children wanted, but not what their budget allowed them.

You as the parent can make your children feel included without allowing their opinions to overrule yours. You’re the adult, it’s your hard earned money, so take the decision by the reins and decide what would best suit your needs both as a family, and yourself. Happy House-hunting!

Bingeworthy Box Sets This Is Us Jack and his wife - who is very pregnant with triplets - have just moved into their new home in Pittsburgh. Successful and handsome television actor Kevin is growing increasingly bored with his bachelor lifestyle. Randall - who was abandoned at a fire station by his father as an infant is a stylish New York-based businessman working to raise two daughters with his wife, Beth. These people are among a group, several of whom share a birthday, of seemingly random individuals whose lives intertwine in unexpected ways.

The Good Wife When a very public sex and political-corruption scandal lands her husband, Peter, in prison, Alicia Florrick (Emmy-winner Julianna Margulies ) must get past the humiliation and betrayal and assume responsibility for her family. She resumes her career as a defense attorney, shedding her persona as the embarrassed wife of a politician, and takes charge of her destiny. Years later, after Peter wins the gubernatorial election, Alicia must balance her evolving career and family responsibilities with her new position as first lady of Illinois.

Jury deliberates Gabriel Cruz murders Inside a 15-square-meter room in Almería’s provincial courthouse, seven women and two men have began to deliberate on the future of Ana Julia Quezada, the selfconfessed killer of an eight-year-old child named Gabriel Cruz. The nine members of the jury are considering which facts they consider to be proven following eight days of hearings that shed new light on the events of 27th February, 2018, when Gabriel went missing, and the 11 days that elapsed until his body was found. Quezada, who was then in a relationship with the child’s father, Ángel Cruz, confessed to the killing after police caught her moving the eight-year-old’s body in the trunk of her car. Before that, she had participated in an extensive search for the child carried out inside Cabo de Gata natural park, a sparsely populated area of southern Spain where the boy resided. The jurors will now have to decide on the facts of Gabriel’s death in a rural property in Rodalquilar, which Cruz and Quezada were renovating. They will decide whether Quezada committed premeditated murder, as the public prosecutor has argued, premeditated murder

with malicious intent, as the private prosecution claims, or reckless or intentional homicide, which is what her defense claims. The charge that she is eventually convicted of will make the difference between a jail sentence as low as three years, or the highest possible under Spanish law: permanent reviewable prison, the equivalent of life with a possibility of parole after a fixed term.

The public prosecutor also wants Quezada to be sentenced to an additional 10 years in prison on two counts of inflicting psychological harm on Gabriel’s parents, since for 11 days after the child disappeared, there was an extensive search for him in which Quezada actively participated, making public shows of support for Gabriel’s father. On the last day of the hearings, the prosecution and the defense presented their closing arguments to the jury. The public

prosecutor, Elena Fernández, described the animosity that the defendant harbored toward her partner’s child. Gabriel, she told the court, was an obstacle for the accused, and represented an emotional link between his father and mother. “She killed him in cold blood,” argued the public prosecutor, who nevertheless tried to scotch claims from the private prosecution that Quezada beat the child and then left him in distress during more than an hour before he died. For Fernández, the autopsy was clear: Gabriel died in a single act from suffocation. The lawyer for Gabriel’s family, Francisco Torres, was as ruthless with Quezada as he had been throughout the trial. He focused on what he called her “intrinsically evil,” drawing attention to her lack of empathy, “leaving a four year old child behind in Dominican Republic, coming to Spain, working as a prostitute, and then that child falls from a seventh floor.” He was referring to her firstborn daughter, who died after falling out of a window in Quezada’s apartment in Burgos, an incident that was treated at the time as a tragic accident but has raised further suspicions about Quezada since Gabriel’s death. “She is an authentic sociopath,” Torres concluded.

Calls for Little Mix star’s doc to be shown in schools Jesy Nelson left viewers in tears recently as her documentary Odd One Out aired on BBC One. The documentary followed the 28 year old's struggle with online trolls following her rise to fame with girl group Little Mix, which saw her attempt to take her own life in 2013. She spoke in depth for the first time about how she was mocked over her looks and weight during the early years of the band. Jesy revealed she received a message from a stranger telling her she was the "most disgusting thing I have ever seen" on the night she won The X Factor with band-mates Perrie Edwards, 26, Jade Thirlwall, 26, and Leigh-Anne Pinnock, 27. Following the airing of the documentary, which saw her break down in tears as she relived the moment she attempted suicide, viewers demanded the hour long film was to be shown in schools to educate young people on the effects of online trolling. The Only Way Is Essex star Georgia

Kousoulou kickstarted the conversation, writing on Twitter: "Wow #OddOneOut was heartbreaking but amazing! I think this should be shown in all schools and colleges around the world .. Jesy you should be so proud of yourself."

Another viewer agreed: "This Jesy Nelson documentary needs to be shown in every single school and college up and down the country to show that words can break even the most strongest looking people and ruin so many lives. Just be kind." A second demanded: "Jesy’s

documentary should be shown in schools, colleges, universities, in the work place. This issue needs to be solved before more people take the plunge of ending their life." While a third added: "After watching #JessyNelson #OddOneOut, I strongly believe this documentary should be shown to all school children. "The damage words, comments and social media can do to people is heart breaking and no one should have to go through that how brave if Jesy [sic]" Sharing their own experience, another viewer commented: "I don't remember a time when I wasn't bullied for the way I looked (I was fat throughout school) and even when I lost weight by starving myself I was still referred to as fat Jess at school. Then at college I was bullied again because .. well I dunno." Another wrote: "Jesy Nelson’s ‘Odd One Out’ really hit home. It’s beyond sad that we’re living in a world where every move we make we’re being judged by someone

somewhere. Too many lives are being stolen by bullies. I think that #OddOneOut should be introduced to schools globally." Other viewers applauded the Shout Out To My Ex hitmaker for being "brave" and "inspirational" as social media users discussed the "powerful" documentary. One viewer wrote: "#JesyNelson has always been my favourite member of #LittleMix but now I respect her even more for speaking out. Bullying of any kind is never acceptable. Think before you speak/type #OddOneOut #JesyNelsonOddOneOut." Another said: "That poor girl #JesyNelson I'm in tears watching #OddOneOut words can hurt so much, I'm scared of what my girls may be faced with on social media in the future. I'll definitely be showing them this programme xo." A third added: "Sobbing at #JesyNelson Odd One Out. People can be so so cruel and I just don’t know why or how. It’s so important to be kind to everyone."

Celeb support It wasn’t just fans and viewers who praised Jesy as the documentary aired, with some famous faces also taking to social media to have their say. McFly’s Harry Judd wrote: "#oddoneout Heartbreaking documentary but so important. Well done Jesy x." Fellow X Factor winner Sam Bailey wrote: "@LittleMix well done jesy, and well done to all the girls for sharing this and sticking together! Shows how are unbreakable you are! Let’s just hope that this amazing documentary helps others x I’m sure it will x. [sic]" Gemma Collins retweeted Jesy’s boyfriend Chris Hughes’ comment which read: "My girlfriend is the best ******* role model on this planet." The TOWIE legend also wrote on her Twitter: "Everyone should boycott all stand together for these social media companies to ban people of not used in a positive way she’s beautiful and talented and thank god they didn’t get the better of her. [sic]"

Jolie to make BBC children’s TV show Angelina Jolie is making a children's programme for the BBC. The 44-yearold actress-and-director - who has Maddox, 18, Pax, 15, Zahara, 14, Shiloh, 13, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 11, with former husband Brad Pitt - thinks the next generation need to be "prepared" to tackle global issues but she doesn't just want to educate her own children about it. Asked about values she teaches her children, Angelina told Britain's HELLO!

magazine: "Kindness - to others and themselves. It's important to be humble - know the freedoms you have and what you've been blessed with and make sure you help others. And always remember your place - we're all human and very flawed. We're tiny pieces in a much bigger world. "As they grow up, I find my children are strong individuals but still openminded. I try to lead by example and be kind and gracious, as my mother was -

and loving and tolerant. But when there's a fight that needs to be had, get in there. We need to prepare the next generation because there's so much happening in the world they're up against it. "I'm working on a programme for children with the BBC. We're counting on our children so we

must give them the right knowledge and support. "We've made a lot of advances and mistakes we need to be honest and educate them about the world.” And Angelina is also working on a

factual book for children about their rights. She added: "I'm also working on a book about kids' rights with Amnesty. It's written for children. "Often we can encourage children to know their rights and speak out, but in parts of the world they're hurt or jailed for doing so. "We have to be realistic and give children the right tools and information."

Hangover Cures How to Cure a Hangover The only way to prevent a hangover the night before a drinking binge is to drink in moderation, or to stay away from alcohol entirely. But it can be easy to overindulge—and then wake up the next day with hangover symptoms like nausea, headache, and fatigue. Alternating your drinks with water or another non-alcoholic beverage can help you slow down and stay hydrated. If you still wind up with a hangover, you may be inclined to try one of the many supposedly remedies. However, these hangover cures are often ineffective, and some may actually make you feel worse. Here's how to really get rid of a hangover. Hair of the dog Even though the thought of a Bloody Mary may appeal to you, a Virgin Mary is a much better choice the morning after. The worst thing to do is to have another drink. The alcohol may temporarily help your symptoms, but it could actually hurt in the long run. Hangovers make you feel horrible because alcohol is toxic and you need to give your body a chance to recover. That morning drink could lead to an even worse hangover the following day. Greasy breakfast There’s no scientific evidence that a heaping helping of bacon

and eggs will ease hangover anguish, even though many people swear by it. Greasy food is just going to give you heartburn. Instead stick with easy-to-digest foods such as toast or cereal. You need to get calories right back into your system. Eat light and stay hydrated. No specific foods are recommended, although honey sandwiches are helpful to some people. Alka-Seltzer The famous fizzy medicine has probably been used to treat hangovers as long as it's existed. All Alka-Seltzer varieties contain sodium bicarbonate (also known as baking soda), which will help settle a queasy belly by neutralizing stomach acid. Still, other ingredients, notably aspirin and citric acid, may irritate your stomach after a night of heavy drinking. Hangover pills There are lots of hangover "cures" in a bottle out there - such as Chaser, PreToxx, and RU 21 - but very little evidence to back up claims.

Hangover pills that have been studied are not effective, or only help against a few complaints… but not all. A recent review article in the journal BMJ identified eight peer-reviewed, placebocontrolled studies of hangover remedies, and concluded that "no compelling evidence exists" to support their use. Experts suggest taking a multivitamin instead to restore the nutrients your body may have lost during a binge. Coffee If you’re a regular coffee drinker, skipping java when you’re hung over may - or may not - be a good idea. You may wind up layering a pounding caffeine-withdrawal headache on top of your hangover woes when you miss your regular morning fix. That said, caffeine narrows your blood vessels and boosts blood pressure. Both of these may make the hangover worse. If you drink coffee regularly, you might try a very small amount in the morning. Wait 30 to 60 minutes and see how you feel.

Health Benefits of Green Tea One of the healthiest beverages on the planet, green tea leaves can be steeped to make tea, or sipped whole in the form of matcha powder. Both the leaves and the tea itself can also be incorporated into cooking. Here’s a summary of green tea benefits, as well as simple ways to include this wonder plant into your daily routine. Green tea contains polyphenol antioxidants that reduce inflammation in the body, a known trigger of premature aging. These antioxidants also proactively protect cells from damage that can lead to a number of chronic illnesses, making it a superfood that offers a broad range of health protection.

While it does provide caffeine, green tea also contains an amino acid called L-theanine, which produces a calming effect. The combination of caffeine and L-theanine has also been shown to optimise brain function to enhance working memory, cognitive performance, and elevate mood. Green tea’s ability to counter oxidative stress also makes it a potent protector against neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. In human and animal research, green tea has been shown to rev metabolism and stimulate fat burning. It is also linked to curbing appetite and preventing

fat gain by inhibiting a process known as angiogenesis - the formation of new blood vessels which fat tissue growth depends on. Green tea fends off cancer in a few key ways. The plant protects against damage that can trigger the uncontrolled growth of cells, which can lead to cancerous mutations. The anti-angiogenesis effect that helps prevent fat gain also works to block cancer from spreading.

World's spiciest chip is sold only one to a customer If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to get peppersprayed directly in your mouth, Paqui Chips has something you can’t afford to miss. Following the success of their Carolina Reaper Madness One Chip Challenges back in 2016 and 2017, Food & Wine reports that the company has re-released the sadistic snack. Continuing their part-marketing gimmick, part-public safety effort, the Reaper chip won’t be sold in bags. You just get one chip. That’s because Paqui dusts its chips with the Carolina Reaper Pepper, considered the world’s hottest, and most (attempted) consumers of the chip report

being unable to finish even one. To drive home the point of how hot this chip is - it’s really, extremely, punishingly hot - the chip is sold in a tiny coffin-shaped box. Peppers like the Carolina Reaper are loaded with capsaicin,

a compound that triggers messages of heat and pain and fiery consumption; your body can respond by vomiting or having shortness of breath. While eating the chip is not the same as consuming the bare, whole pepper, it’s still going to be a very uncomfortable experience. The chip will be sold only on Paqui’s website for $6.99 per chip or $59.90 for a 10-pack. The company also encourages pepper aficionados to upload photos or video of their attempts to finish the chip. If it becomes too much, try eating yogurt, honey, or milk to dampen the effects.

Naked Chef’s son steps into limelight Jamie Oliver's son Buddy is taking after his famous Dad, so much so that he has proven to not only be a good cook but a natural on camera too! The nine-year-old made his presenting debut over the weekend on Jamie's YouTube channel to teach viewers how to make the perfect scrambled eggs on toast. Buddy was confident as he addressed his audience. "Hi guys, it's me Buddy Oliver and today I am going to show you how to make scrambled eggs," he said. Buddy even gave some top tips that had been passed onto him by his famous dad, including what to do if a piece of egg shell fell into the cooking bowl. "Dad taught me a trick on how to get the shell out, just use another piece of the shell to scoop it out," he said. The finished results looked good enough to eat, and viewers

were seriously impressed with Buddy, with many urging him to get his own TV show for children. In the comments section, one wrote: "I think it's time Buddy got his own little series on YouTube! Imagine other children watching him and getting inspired." Another wrote: "He's got a brilliant camera presence and not even slightly nervous." A third added: "Okay, most definitely his father's son. More Buddy please and thank you." Buddy has featured on his Dad's YouTube channel on a number of occasions while helping him in the kitchen. In August, the little boy joined his dad at work for the day and cooked up a tasty-looking pasta dish that looked almost identical to his famous dad's efforts. Sharing some sweet images on Instagram of Buddy cooking up a

storm, Jamie proudly said: "I've got my top helper Buddy on chef duty with me at HQ today and we did a LIVE cook up on Facebook this morning cooking up my sunshine fusilli pasta from my brand new book #JamiesVeg! Check out the results both were delicious, the only difference being I used yellow peppers & Buddy used red peppers." It's been an exciting month for Buddy, who turned nine recently. The little boy's special day was marked on social media by his doting mum Jools Oliver, who shared a sweet photo of him relaxing outside in the garden while laying next to a pool with ducklings. The mum-of-five captioned the picture: "This capture just about sums you up little Buds‌ now you are 9 our little gentle soul xxx."

Technology

3D selfies from Snapchat Snapchat has introduced a new feature that allows users to take selfies that appear three dimensional. The 3D Camera Mode applies the effect to lenses and filters, though not all users of the popular app will have access to it. People will need to have a phone from the iPhone X or iPhone 11 range in order to use it, as it makes use of Apple's latest depth-sensing technology. "Today we're excited to introduce a 3D Camera Mode that adds depth to your Snaps," the social media firm announced. "Use it to create Snaps that capture spatial detail, changing in perspective and appearance based on how you move your phone when you view them. These new Snaps look different, act different, and feel different." Pictures taken with the new feature can be shared with other users, even if they don't have the newest iPhone. The new 3D Camera Mode has been available as an update through the Snapchat app since last week. Once updated, users will be able to find the feature using the drop down menu on the right-hand side of the screen. Snapchat's parent company Snap will be hoping the latest update will provide ammunition in its ongoing battle with Instagram to entice new users to its platform. Facebook-owned Instagram currently has around 500 million daily active users, while Snapchat has around 203 million. It is estimated that around 70 per cent of Snapchat users make use of lenses and photo effects when taking pictures. Last month, Snapchat revealed the third version of its Spectacles smart glasses, which features dual lenses that are "inspired by the human eye". The 3D Camera Mode also works with the Spectacles 3.

Gamers to gain from car technology Keeping yourself firmly planted when doing some spirited driving while also keeping comfortable for long drives are both essential job functions for a car seat. That's why manufacturers spend vast sums of money developing them, especially for high-end and sports cars. This may come as a surprise, but those same qualities - comfort and support - are important in a serious gaming chair, especially for people who game professionally on an esports team like FaZe Clan or OpTic Gaming. That's why Nissan announced recently that it was teaming up with the two wildly popular gaming teams to design new gaming chair concepts based on their most popular vehicles for National Video Game Day. What they ended up with were three sketches, each based on a different Nissan vehicle. The first is based on the GT-R Nismo and is made of carbon fiber and aluminum for stiffness and lightweight. The racing seat-like design is meant to grip the player through even the most intense rage-quits and after repeated no-scope headshots in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The

carbon bucket is covered in red leather and Alcantara-like microsuede. The second chair is inspired by Nissan's Armada SUV and as such it’s a radically different take on performance than the GT-R seat. To start with, it's heated and cooled, for optimum butt temperature management. It's also got adjustable lumbar support so that you don't cramp up after long periods of camping and waiting for n00bs. Like the Armada Platinum Reserve, it's covered in brown and black leather. Finally, we've got a seat inspired by Nissan's Leaf. It's got a built-in leg rest and on-board USB charging. We dig the electric blue highlights against the gray leather. Frankly, this looks comfortable and looks like it's something that could actually get built. Speaking of getting built, Nissan claims it has no plans to produce any of these chairs, but it's keeping tabs on public interest and asking people to vote for their favorite of the sketches on Twitter.

Google Assistant gets a second voice Google is launching new voices for Google Assistant in nine countries today, adding a secondary voice option outside the US for the first time. When users set up a new Android phone, the default voice will also be chosen at random, so there’ll be a mix of people getting the old and new voices, though you can still change later if you want to. New voices are available for Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Norwegian in their respective countries. New English voices are also being launched in India and the UK. Google’s Assistant — like all of the other major smart assistants — launched with a traditionally female-sounding voice. Google has been trying to move away from gendering its assistant, though. These new voices will be traditionally male-sounding, but neither voice will come with a gendered name or description. Instead, Google will refer to the voices by colours. So one might be named “red”

and the other might be named “orange.” The colours and the order they’re presented in will even be randomised, so as to not tilt the scales toward one voice or another if users go to change the voice later on. Google began randomising Assistant’s presentation like this last year, and on Google Nest and Home devices in the US, it’s already randomized the default voice. Multiple voices have only been available in the US, though, and only in English. Today’s update changes that, even if their availability is still unfortunately limited. International voice options aren’t as expansive either: in the US, there are 11 Englishlanguage voices including John Legend.

How to keep your brain happy and healthy We track our heart rate, exercise our muscles, and protect our skin with sunscreen as best we can. Yet despite all the thinking our brain does for us, we rarely stop and think about it. Our small but mighty command centre can simultaneously rehearse a PowerPoint, manage digestion, dive to catch a teetering coffee mug, and contemplate whether perfect love is actually attainable. Just ponder that for a minute. Once upon a time, we thought we were born with all our brain cells, or neurons. Now, research is showing us evidence that we continue to make more as we age. We can also build new connections between existing neurons, a phenomenon called neuroplasticity that helps our brain hum along at high efficiency. Experts are learning more about how our daily choices can benefit the brain, too. Changes that lead to Alzheimer's start decades before the first symptoms of forgetfulness. Experts now believe you can take steps in early and middle adulthood to protect your brain, for right now and down the road.

Connect with Friends Whether it happens at book club or weeding in the community garden, what can seem like small talk does a world of good. Social engagement is one of the most important things you can do for brain health. And it doesn't just give you a long-term advantage. Social ties also buffer us from the effects of the stress hormone cortisol. That's good news, since a 2018 study in Neurology found that middle-aged adults-women in particular-with high levels of it scored lower on memory and attention tests

than subjects with moderate levels.

Avoid Multitasking Multitasking is as bad for your brain as smoking is for your lungs. A sure-fire byproduct is an elevated cortisol level can dim your recall and focus powers. When you multitask-texting during a meeting, say-you ask your brain to do two competing things. It overloads the brain and makes you less efficient. It's like having your feet on the gas and the brake simultaneously. Instead, try focusing on just one thing in its turn, and step away from what you're doing for three to five minutes a few times a day.

for a daily minimum of a cup of raw or a half-cup of cooked leafy greens and five weekly one-ounce servings of nuts, which are chock-full of the B vitamins neurons love.

Find Your Exercise Regimen All the busy experts in this story make fitness a top priority. Any exercise helps manage blood pressure and lower stroke risk. It also increases blood flow to the brain, ups its oxygen supply, and reduces inflammation. In addition, a chemical called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, increases. It regenerates neurons and helps them work better.

Feed Your Mind

Learn New Things

Researchers at Chicago's Rush University Medical Centre and Harvard University developed a way to eat that keeps the brain stoked with what it needs now and staves off future cognitive decline. Meet the MIND diet, a combo of the Mediterranean and DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) regimens. Nutrients in the MIND diet have been shown to reduce inflammation, prevent neuron death, and reduce oxidative stress, which can harm neurons. The key players are omega-3 fatty acids, from at least one three-ounce serving of fish a week; polyphenols, from berries and plenty of olive oil's healthy fat. The diet also calls

The brain craves novelty. And it doesn't get it from a sudoku or braintraining app, which recruits the same skills repeatedly. Pick up interests that command your full attention and keep developing your skills, like playing a new instrument or learning a foreign language.

Create a Routine

Bedtime

To get more good rest, establish a wind-down routine: Stretch, read, or take a sip some soothing tea a half hour before bed. And if you have symptoms like daytime fatigue or freight-train snoring, get checked for sleep apnea.

Road deaths in Spain fall to a historic August low The figures are never good of course, only less bad. A total of 220 people died in traffic accidents during the months of July and August in Spain, the lowest figure on record. Last month the number of fatalities was 101, making it the least deadly month of August since 1993. The statistics were released by Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska during a review of the measures that were rolled out this summer to ensure road safety. The low fatality figure for August is particularly relevant, as it is the month of the year when most travel takes place: 47.8 million people were on the road, according to the national traffic authority DGT. Even so, Grande-Marlaska warned of the need to keep raising awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The minister noted that in 2018, many of the people who died in traffic accidents had high blood alcohol concentration. “It’s not about having one drink too many. Every single drink is one too many, he said. This summer, traffic authorities rolled

out 28 new radars and conducted 1.1 million alcohol breath tests. The most dangerous roadways continue to be the conventional two-lane roads, where 70 percent of deadly accidents (154) have taken place even

though the speed limit was reduced from 100 km/h to 90 Km/h in January. Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcycle riders remain the most vulnerable groups, representing four out of every 10 deaths in July and August.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

I tell you what, it's about time there was some consistency around VAR. It cannot go on like this, it's killing the game. It needs to be fixed and it needs to be fixed NOW. Can all the media bods please get together and decide whether we are calling it VAR like car or V-A-R, please? The rest of the moans about it can do one, as far as I am concerned. "But he was only a millimetre offside", they moan. Yes, so he was offside then. Deal with it. I accept, completely and utterly, that some things that are blatant fouls and clear-and-obvious errors on the field of play are being missed and not reviewed correctly - but it's not the offsides that are the issue. Mind you, watching a little bit of the Rugby World Cup this weekend and having also watched a lot of cricket this summer, it would be great if we could have the refs miked up so we

could have their decision-making process explained. And fine any player caught dropping the F-bomb on mic £1m instantly. Anyway, some football was played this weekend - shall we take a look? Football can be a cruel mistress. I mean, it's very rare you see one of those cheeky-little-move-the-ball free-kicks come off in a game, let alone two. Liverpool squeezed two moments of invention into the first 45 minutes at Stamford Bridge in a half that could well be remembered for being the half where we all remembered that Tammy Abraham is an excellent striker against Championship level defences. Abraham raced through 1v1 against Adrian, who to be fair is probably a Championship level keeper, only to fail to score. Tammy, a young Harry Kane would have scored that. A young Alan Shearer would have found a way to turn that chance into a hat-trick. I fear even a young Wayne Rooney would have tucked it away, let alone a young Michael Owen who was scoring tougher chances than that in a World Cup several years younger. Then, within the next five minutes Chelsea thought they'd equalised only for VAR to disagree and then conceded a killer second goal when their entire defence thought it would be fun to experiment with not marking Bobby Firmino. And if only they had marked him Liverpool downed tools for large parts of the second half believing Chelsea wouldn't lay a glove on them before Ngolo Kante's little slalom and right-side-foot finish made it a nervy old finish. Mason Mount might finally be in Frank Lampard's bad books after missing that chance right at the end. What's going to be more fun to talk about now - City sticking eight past Watford or United being done 2-0 by West Ham? Too right, we are off to the Athletics Stadium where West Ham not only started with what looked like a more exciting side - they turned into three points. Being the fickle so-and-so that I am, I'm going to suggest that United missed Paul Pogba - even though I also suggested the reason they beat Leicester last week was due to his absence. At 1-0 down, Marcus Rashford went off injured which, to be fair, did remind me he was on the pitch -

meaning that the only fit striker at Manchester United is now their manager. In other completely unrelated news, Romelu Lukaku scored the winner in the Milan derby. United started Ashley Young, Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata and seemed to think that they could get away with that once again. It's one thing winning a

Quique Sanchez Flores' beard wasn't grey enough. Ben Foster clearly hadn't had enough to do that afternoon as he was then paraded out in front of the post-match cameras to do the press commitments. Surely one of the Watford strikers had been less busy? After all, Deulofeu only touched the ball 13 times and eight of

Romelu Lukaku Premier League title when Darren Fletcher can pass it to Rooney, Ronaldo, Giggs or Scholes. It's another thing entirely when Scott McTominay looks up and has to knock it to Fred or Andreas Perreira. Jack Wilshere came off the bench to clock up his 250th Premier League appearance. Well done Jack, that's 11 years dedication finally rewarded. It's good to see that managerial change at Watford is getting some kind of bounce. It took City approximately 52 seconds to get Norwich out of their system and if I was Pep, I'd be furious they only scored eight. City managed six different scorers at the Etihad, as if

those were, genuinely, kicking off again after City scored. Tottenham skipper-for-the-day, Harry Kane, called his team out midweek for still making the kind of mistakes they were making four years ago when they were "young". Kane did manage to score the kind of goal only a true goalscorer sporting a silly beard can get away with, but it was not enough for Spurs to improve their current away Premier League form. James Maddison is finally proving he is as deadly on the pitch as he is on Twitter - where he was recently taken down Piers Morgan and the Sun. It was Maddison, until the 84th minute the

James Madison

player who has taken the most Premier League shots without a goal, who arrowed Leicester's late winner home after a little more VAR controversy in the first-half. Look guys, he was offside. You can't be a little bit pregnant. Personally, I think we should be questioning the linesman for not spotting it in the first place. Did anyone actually think Arsenal would follow up a decent Europa League result (result, not performance) on Thursday night by easing past Aston Villa at home? If you did, you are a fool. Arsenal managed to get a win, somehow, probably something to do with Yo-Pierre spotting a flat-track and deciding to do some bullying with a few minutes to go. Did anyone actually think Norwich would follow up their sensational win over City last week by easing past Burnley away from home? If you did, you are a fool. Burnley showed, again, how to overcome a team that likes to press a passing game by opting not to play a passing game in the slightest. As I read somewhere earlier today, Ashley Barnes would flick a grenade on if it was thrown at him. Bournemouth have finally lifted their curse against Southampton, winning 3-1 against their local-ish rivals. That curse was passed on to anyone who felt obliged to watch Newcastle and Brighton play out the kind of 0-0 the late Saturday TV slot was designed for. Wolves completely deny that their Europa League campaign is affecting their start to the Premier League season - they debunked that theory by nicking a draw against Palace at Selhurst Park meaning they are still looking for their first league win of the season. Finally, some Everton fans have nosedived so much into a pit of football depression that they are fondly remembering their relationship with Big Sam Allardyce. 'It wasn't that bad, we had some good times, didn't we Sam?' many a Toffee was slurring out loud whilst drowning their sorrows with a bottle of wine, alone. Everton lost 2-0 at home to Sheffield United, and when the acceptance of an average start to the season has been based around 'well, we are hard to beat at home' then there's not a lot to be cheery about in the blue half of Merseyside. The fans did get to cheer something though, Phil Jagielka coming on as sub for Sheffield United. It goes get easier though - they've got City next.

YOUR WEEK IN SPORT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Does that mean summer is over now, then? Being realistic, there is no way they are going to get any county cricket in next week which means *checks notes very carefully* that Somerset have bottled the title once again and Essex will do the double for the last time ever. The last time ever? Didn't you hear country cricket will be as important as Britain's Got Talent from next summer as the ECB start to work towards winning back the Ashes by depriotising it further, this time below the T20 lite (officially called The Hundred). Some people are calling for the country game to be revamped to give the Test side greater strength and depth. Here's a cunning revamp for you - make it important again. Cut back, albeit a little, on all this white-ball stuff and start

to develop cricketers that aren't told off for leaving six balls in a row that aren't hitting the stumps. Don't add more white-ball tournaments into the mix that are not going to really benefit anyone other than a few marketing agencies given massive contracts to go and flog an already dead horse. Trim the fat off the T20 Blast to allow, at the very least, for each country to be able to play each other the same amount of times in a summer. And let's not all jump on the bandwagon of applauding people who can purely 'bat time'. Yes, this is the current buzzword but it's all very well being able to occupy time at the crease - but let's not get back to the world of Boycott. Find the balance between being able to not get out for a long time whilst gently moving the game forwards.

Dom Sibley will almost certainly get to spend the winter under the

microscope in New Zealand and South Africa, given his ton in each innings in the penultimate round of county fixtures. Joe Denly may not be so certain as he was only awarded a white-ball contract for the next year. Moeen Ali preempted his loss of contract by making himself unavailable for the two winter Test series but the big surprise was Liam Plunkett not having

his white-ball deal renewed. It's not as if the big man did anything for England over the summer, was it? Ashley Giles and Ed Smith wrote this one off as Plunkett unlikely to be young enough or good enough come the next World Cup, but the sudden binning of one of England's key players in their firstever World Cup-winning campaign seems a little, well, hasty. Surely, these guys get a chance to retire heads held high, rather than getting that call? Or at the very least, a call that warns them so they can at least "retire from international cricket" and not look like they've just been turfed out? It was a little bit classless to say the least. By the time you read this, the squads for the New Zealand leg should have been announced. Who knows, they might even have a new coach by then too...

Esquina Park Rangers Quesada Las Ramblas Golf Society Walking Football bowls Esquina Park Rangers Walking Football Team were in action on Friday 20th September, playing against Hondon Valley Flyers. Not much walking from both teams, Hondon's centre-forward would give Usain Bolt a run for his money! Beardy Geoff was Ref for this game and did a smashing job, keeping the boxing to a minimum. Esquina pounced first with Stuart the former Chester Casual somehow nipping the ball into the net. Big Dave Meldrum with more tattoos than Edinburgh, played in goal and kept out Hondon for a while until Big Andrew Webster tripped over his shoe-lace and encroached the six yard box giving Hondon a penalty. Hondon stepped up and despite Dave's best effort, scored making it 1 each. Hondon went 2-1 up as the Esquina Players moaned about a high ball which deflected off a player's nose. Geoff was having none of it and the goal stood. With Esquina on the back foot,

Dangerous Darren, who was hanging about their six-yard box like a bad smell, managed to toe-poke the ball past their stranded keeper, making it 2-2. Esquina had a couple of players sinbinned for two minutes each, Gordon being the first for an accidental slide tackle and Stuart for squaring up to the Hondon player who no-one can understand. Into the last quarter and both teams were looking for the winner. It was Esquina's persistence that paid off with Big Graham Cockburn toe-poking the ball into the corner of the net. Good job Graham's wife was watching in the crowd of 336 as Stuart's tongue was going all the way down Graham's throat such was his excitement. Esquina held on for a deserved 3-2 victory against a stubborn Hondon team. Well played to all the Lads. Next Home Game is Friday 27th September (11am kick-off) against St. Patrick's Evergreen. All spectators welcome.

As is normal at this time of year, things are all very quiet on the bowling front. A mixture of the weather and holidays means not much happens. We can report, however, that we have brought our bowlers together for the season’s opening event, the Captain's versus the President's annual match. Recent weather did not dampen or spirits, although we had a few absentees due to the conditions. We hope all goes well for everyone soon. As to the match itself, it was played in high spirits and the outcome was not really important, but I should report it was in the Captain's favour. We retired inside afterwards and enjoyed a welcome buffet, prepared by our hosts. We are hosting the Valencian Championships, so the green is currently occupied. The semi final and final stages will be played, from 28 September to 1 October, at Quesada. Entry to the venue is absolutely free. Quesada bowls club welcomes both new and experienced bowlers. We are a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual bowlers. In addition to league matches and club competitions, we have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive, and Tuesday bubble drive which is open to visitors. So come along and see what we have to offer! Contact our membership secretary Angie Goddard at newleaf2014@hotmail.co.uk Report by Jim Donnelly

Firstly apologies for no report last week but I had rather a lot of decorating and DIY to do. I won’t ‘gloss’ over the fact though that Nick Lee was ‘top coat’ in last week’s Joker Stableford with 45 points. ‘Rollover’ to Monday and it was Paul Brown, Benedicte Kruse, Annemarie Weisheit and the fictional Albert who ‘sealed’ victory in the counter game with a not to be ‘caulked’ at score of 95 points. It was certainly no ‘whitewash’ for Rachel Lee in Wednesday’s Stableford as she ‘nailed’ 1st place with 38 points but only on countback over Mike Mahony, (looks like he’s been reunited with his golf clubs then!) Joyce McClusky ‘filled in the cracks’ of the top three with 36. Showing Liz grit’ ‘medium some Robertson‘dovetailed’ into 4th place with 35 points.Three of our members ‘hammered’ home a 2 today, Liz Robertson, Nigel Price and, obviously in

his ‘prime(r)’, Nick Lee. Our thoughts this week go to Andy McDonald who had a bit of a ‘light bulb’ going out moment and got his ‘wires’ crossed before the game started. Maybe it was his ‘short fuse’. Get well soon mate! Onto Friday and it was the good old 32-1 Dusty (sheet) Bin. Liz and Ken Robertson together with Nick Lee (yes again) and Rachel Leckey (welcome back Rachel) who ‘adapted’ well and took 1st place with a ‘brilliant white’ 94 points. (Just two points short of our all time record). ‘Soldering’ on into 2nd spot, with 89 points, were Rachel Lee, John Shervell, Benedicte Kruse and Jan Svendsen. Por ultimo, John Dobson, who was probably ‘plastered’, says to his caddy, ‘Please stop checking your watch all the time. It’s too much of a distraction’. Caddy replies, ‘It’s not a watch it’s a compass’. Peter Reffell

International Cricket MATCH FISHING REPORT

This week’s 3rd round match of the Winter Series was fished on the El Bosquet Complex Section B on the 17th September. It was surprising how quickly everywhere had dried up around the complex after the dreadful storms we have suffered, the water amazingly was only up about six inches in the channels, but all the surrounding fields were still flooded and also some of the roads. Ian Brown took the top spot with 12.100kgs and coming in second was our new member Peter McNichol with 10.860kgs, and was closely followed in third place by Neil McBirnie with 10.460kgs 1st Ian Brown with 12.100kgs fishing the pole and feeder using pellet 2nd Peter McNichol with 10.860kgs fishing the pole using pellet 3rd Neil McBirnie with 10.460kgs fishing the pole using pellet There are still some vacancies available for

Our 4th round of the summer Championship was also fished at the El Bosquet Complex Section B on the 19th September. What a difference a day can make, Neil McBirnie drew the same peg as yesterday where he only managed to catch 10 kgs, but today he took first place with 50.090kgs which is over 100lb of fish, well done once again to the “Boy”. Lennie Bolton was second with 28.600kgs and Mick Hill

SA were bundled out for 177 in their third game of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League Two, but Karima Gore's 4/20 helped them maintain their winning streak in the tournament. USA continued their perfect week on home soil as a superb bowling performance from Karima Gore coupled with a gritty innings from Monank Patel helped them to their third win from as many games in Florida. Having opted to bat first, the hosts lost Jaskaran Malhotra in the second over. Wickets fell at regular intervals and by the 19th over, they had been reduced to 63/5. Monank Patel showed resistance and he went on to make the only half-century of the match, scoring 66 runs off 99 deliveres. He shared a crucial 48run stand for the eighth wicket with the 37-year-old veteran Elmore Hutchinson, who chipped in with 28. Patel was finally dismissed by Nosaina Pokana in the 46th over. Pokana, who claimed 3/44, took his tally to 12 wickets to become the leading wicket-taker in the tournament. Jason Kila was also impressive with the ball taking 3/27 in his 9.1 overs, helping bowl the hosts out with 11 balls to spare.

There was then a brief rain delay, which, fortunately, didn't cause any reduction in overs. PNG, who had lost each of their five games in the tournament would have hoped to turn things around with a small target to chase. They started decently, adding 31 runs for the first wicket. But things changed rapidly once Steven Taylor took the wicket of Tony Ura (19) in the 7th over, thanks to a fine catch by Timil Patel. In the very next over, USA captain Saurabh Netravalakar claimed the wicket of Gaudi Toka (6). PNG captain Assad Vala put pressure on USA by hitting a few boundaries, but Nisarg Patel dismissed him for 38 in the 23rd over, which sparked a dramatic collapse. PNG slipped from 87/3 to

115 all-out, with Karima Gore ripping through their lower-order. With that result, USA moved to the top of the points table despite having played only three games so far. Their fortunes are in stark contrast to those of PNG, who have lost each of their six matches. USA will hope to continue their winning run they play their final match of the home leg against Namibia on Friday, 20 September. PNG has two more matches, both against Namibia on 22 and 23 September respectively. Karima Gore, Player of the Match: “My basic plan was to bowl a lot of dot balls and feel as the guys really came around me with the support. Which helped give me confidence and put a good plan too.”
