and his former secretary wife Sue, 71, were convicted by three judges of drugs trafficking after a one-day trial at Lisbon’s main criminal court. They were sentenced to eight years each and told they will serve their sentences in Portugal instead of being sent back to Britain as a state prosecutor had requested. The British pensioner whispered “Jesus Christ! I wasn’t expecting more than four” to his wife in court as the sentences were read for smuggling £1 million pounds of cocaine on a luxury Caribbean cruise. Lead judge Margarida Alves told the couple: “We are totally convinced you knew the contents of these four cases. You did what you did not because you are drug consumers but because you wanted to make an easy profit.” The former Bromley, Kent-born chef had told the court he had no idea the cases had drugs inside and was taking them back to the UK for a friend called Lee who had promised to pay him £800

“betrayed” by people he trusted and insisted the Brits were drug mules who used the four cruises they took to South America in two years as a front for their crimes. And she questioned how they could pay for the cruises costing around £18,000 when they survived on a joint Continued on page 3

and bragged he could sell them for a massive profit at Harrods. He said UK-based Jamaican businessman ‘Lee’ and another associate called Dee, who he named in court as George Wilmot, had asked him to help negotiate the import of exotic fruit during Caribbean cruise stopovers and he brought the suitcases back for them as a sideline. State prosecutor Manuela Brito rubbished his court claim he had been

BITE SIZE NEWS: Free help in your language The Councillor for International Residents in Torrevieja, Gitte Lund Thomsen, has announced that from today, 1st October, from 1pm to 2pm, the Department will have a physical presence in the Census and Statistics unit to help those residents in their own language who need to deal with issues relating to the Municipal Register.

Business boost Banco Sabadell has concluded its new campaign "We believe in Torrevieja", an initiative developed jointly with the City of Torrevieja aimed at helping to boost the commercial fabric of the city. Since June more than 220 businesses have participated in this campaign, for which more than 10,000 bags have been distributed among customers and users of Torrevieja businesses. Those customers supporting local businesses were given a shopping bag and the opportunity to win prizes including 3,000 euros for the winner of the raffle and a further 2,000 euros.

Workshop for the third age The workshops are part of the Collaboration Agreement that has been established between the Department for Older People and AGAMED with an investment of € 5,600. The workshops are to be held from 14th October to 14th December at the Continued on page 5

monthly pension of £1150 they had to pay £445 in rent from. Mrs Clarke admitted during their trial she had been with her husband when they took two of the four cases containing the drugs onto their cruise ship, but insisted she only knew her husband’s business associates socially and never accompanied him when he negotiated fruit sales. Mr Clarke confirmed in court they had both served prison sentences in Norway after being convicted in 2010 for trafficking 240 kilos of cannabis resin, claiming he had done a first drugs run to clear debts and was made to do more with his wife as cover after being threatened with violence by gangster paymasters if he stopped. Roger, who was born Roger Button but changed his surname to Clarke after finishing his prison sentence, was jailed for nearly five year and Sue for three years nine months. The expat couple lied to friends in El Raso near Guardamar del Segura where they lived and were the life and soul of local bars and members of a golf club, by telling they had served time in prison for cigarette smuggling.

Not credible The lead judge told the court as she announced the verdict and sentence that Mr Clarke’s claims about helping his mystery business associates with their

fruit and suitcase business “didn’t deserve any credibility.” She added: “Any person involved in importing fruit would do their business directly instead of going through friends on cruise ships. “It’s not credible either that they would carry four cases for someone and throw away their existing cases with the justification they they’ve got no room in their cabin.” Insisting their age and life experience should have made them suspicious about the idea of bringing holdalls back to Europe for someone else, especially as convicted drugs smugglers, she added: “This court is convinced the accused did what they did consciously and of their own free will and knew what they were carrying.” Roger, dressed in a blue jumper, blue shirt and black trousers, shook his head in disbelief as he realised he was not departing court a free man, leaving one hand on his wife’s lap as he raised the other to his forehead. His wife, wearing a white shirt with blue stripes and black trousers, clasped his hand tightly but made no comment. They were led away from Lisbon’s Campus de Justica with a police escort and driven away to the same prisons where they have spent the last nine months - Roger to EP Lisboa which another Brit who was in jail with him has describe as the “worst” prison in Europe and Sue to nearby Tires Women’s Prison.

BITE SIZE Seven dead in dinghy NEWS: sea crossing to Spain Continued from page 3 Municipal Leisure Centre (CMO), the House of the Third Age of San Pascual, and the Polyvalent Social Centre in La Mata and have been developed to help maintain the quality of life for the elderly. The activities that will be developed are: Ceramics workshop - House of the Third Age of San Pascual on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30am to 12noon. Yoga workshop - House of the Third Age of San Pascual on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30am to 11am. Dance Workshop - Municipal Leisure Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 12noon and on Fridays at the Mata Multipurpose Centre from 10am to 1pm.

Fumigation The municipal pest control company has intensified its work teams to give a quick response to the current plague of mosquitoes that have thrived following the recent heavy rains and resulting pools of water. Particularly in those areas near to Torrevieja lagoon. There are four applications that will be carried out throughout the week, addressing all the flooded areas and targeting larvae and adult mosquitoes. The Councillor for Health and Pest Control hopes that the situation will improve as these intensive treatments are carried out but any residents with any pest related issues can contact: General Registry of the City Council (PROP), telephone: 607 246 907 (from 9am to 11am), or by emailing: ddd.torrevieja@gmail.com, giving your name, phone number, address and type of pest.

English coversion programme The Councillor for Youth, Diana Box Alonso, and the Councillor for International Relations, Gitte Lund Thomsen, have visited the Youth Information and Animation Center (CIAJ), to attend the first day of the English conversation program with British volunteers. This has been on-going since 2012 and is aimed at those who are interested in improving their fluency in English. Classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the morning from 10am to 12noon and on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, from 5pm to 6pm. The activity is completely free and open to people of all ages. The only requirement is that participants have at least a pre-intermediate level of English. Programme is based mainly around the practice of spoken English with a group of British volunteers who help throughout the course and are coordinated by Crystal East. All of the British volunteers offer, in a totally selfless way, their help for the improvement of the students. Another objective of these conversations is to foster social relations and integrating the citizens of Torrevieja. If you have spare time and would like to volunteer than call into any of the classes listed above.

Seven Moroccans risked everything to start a new and better life in Span and ended paying the price with their lives and seven people were found dead in a small dinghy. The bodies have been recovered by the authorities. The tragedy was discovered in Casablanca after the rubber dinghy sank in the voyage to Spain. “The bodies of the victims, including one woman, washed ashore at Ain Harrouda, 17 kilometres from Casablanca on the kingdom’s Atlantic coast, after their inflatable boat got a puncture and sank,” said a Casablanca spokesperson. In addition to those who lost their lives, three survivors were found unconscious and taken to hospital. It is unknown how many people were on board the dinghy initially and it is feared there could be more people missing. Thousands of migrants have arrived in Spain – by sea – during 2019. Many

depart Morocco’s northern Mediterranean coast, kilometres from the south of Spain, in their quest for a better life. The European Union committed 140 million euros last year, towards managing migration from Morocco. In 2018 Moroccan authorities stopped almost 90,000 people in what is deemed as irregular immigration attempts and 29,000 of these were by sea alone.

Diamond wedding celebration Local couple Betty (Elizabeth) and Geoff Allison from Pinar de Campoverde have recently celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary spending a few days in Benidorm and their celebratory meal at The Benidorm Palace. The couple first met at Billingham Coop Youth Club, Teesside in 1957, where Betty boldly asked Geoff for a ride on his shiny new BSA motorbike. They spent the next couple of years touring most of England and were married at Norton Parish Church in September 1959. They have been blessed with four children, six grand children and to date three great grand children...and counting. The Allison’s sold the family home in Billingham in June 2007 and moved to what has been until then their holiday villa in Pinar de Campoverde. Over the past 60 years Betty and Geoff have shared many interests such as: golf, fishing, cycling, walking and popular music. Betty

spends quite a lot of her relaxation time knitting and stuffing dolls and animals for donation to her chosen charities and Geoff is an avid gardener, which he admits is not easy in Spain. The couple said: “We feel very lucky and blessed to have achieved this special milestone and would like to thank all our family and friends for their best wishes.”

Post Brexit Healthcare

As part of the British no-deal government’s communications programme, it issued a statement recently outlining healthcare access for Brits living in EU 27 countries. In the event of a no-deal Brexit, the statement committed the government to funding six months of healthcare for more than 180,000 UK nationals, i.e. those already receiving free specifically cover, health pensioners and students. The caused announcement immediate panic and anxiety amongst British citizens in Spain. During March 2019, the Spanish government issued its Royal Decree to protect Brits in Spain. In the event of a no-deal Brexit, this decree guarantees us continuing healthcare until the end of 2020. However, the offer only stands if the British government reciprocates regarding the

treatment of Spanish citizens in the UK. Whilst the Spanish offer isn’t concrete, it did reassure the British community in Spain that our host country has our best interests at heart. It would be natural to assume that the latest statement from the British government overruled the earlier one from the Spanish government. The story received considerable press coverage throughout the UK and Europe, which reinforced those widespread assumptions. Those relying on free healthcare, or expecting to do so in the future, asked how they would afford private healthcare, or if they would even qualify for private health insurance with pre-existing medical conditions. Apart from genuine concerns about funding future healthcare, many were also worried they would be left with

no alternative but to return to the UK to use the NHS. However, the statement from the British government does not apply to British citizens in Spain – just those living in the rest of the EU. The British Embassy was quick to clarify the situation with an update that was informative and prompt. There was, however, no further communication from the British government – they merely updated their website to confirm that the offer of six months healthcare did not apply to those of us in Spain. The website stated: “The UK and Spain have each taken steps to ensure that people living in each country can continue to access healthcare as they do now until at least 31 December 2020. This means that your healthcare access will remain the same after 31 October 2019, whatever the Brexit scenario”.

Orihuela requests IBI payment extension The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, has asked SUMA Gestión Tributaria (Diputación de Alicante) to extend the payment period for the IBI 2019, until 5th November. The Mayor gave the DANA or Gota Fria as its colloquially know, as the reason for the request. Emilio Bascuñana said: The catastrophic situation recently produced by the DANA in different municipalities

across the Province of Alicante had Orihuela right at the epicentre. The affects have seriously altered the living conditions of the population, so we consider that this situation justifies the extension of this tax payment period so that those people and families affected have more time to make the payment.” The Town Hall has requested that the deadline for payment be extended from 4th October to the 5th November.

GBP / EUR UPDATE Towards the end of last week, the news that the Bank of England had held interest rates and was waiting for a clearer picture on Brexit did little to move the pound but the possibility of a new proposal being put forward to Brussels did help sterling to an average gain of 0.5% against other major currencies. This week it was politics once again at the forefront of the market’s mind. Early in the week, the Labour Party's decision to remain neutral on Brexit and the delay to the announcement of the Supreme Court ruling put pressure on sterling. When the Supreme Court announced its unanimous decision that the government had acted unlawfully in proroguing parliament, the pound made brief gains. The markets appeared to be optimistic that parliament would now have the chance to find a solution to the Brexit impasse, but uncertainty remains about how it will be brought about. In the midst of more political drama, disappointing retail sales midweek were largely ignored, as were the reports that public sector borrowing was less than forecast in August, and the CBI's Industrial Trends survey found manufacturing output flat in the three months to September. Brexit uncertainty continues to put pressure on the pound and with just over a month before the 31st October

deadline expires, its behaving more like an emerging currency with erratic gains and losses as the market attempts to make sense of the latest developments. In Europe consumer confidence improved, but the provisional PMIs suggested that this confidence may be misplaced. Every one of the nine provisional PMIs from France, Germany and across Europe came in lower on the month and missed forecast. Once again, Germany's manufacturing sector was at the back of the pack with a reading of 41.4, reported as the lowest level “since the depths of the global financial crisis in mid-2009.” The euro lost an average of 0.4% against other major currencies, dropping a third of a US cent after ECB president Mario Draghi highlighted that the “growth outlook remains tilted to the downside”, confirming the picture that was already clear from the numbers. The surprise resignation of Sabine Lautenschlager from the ECB caused some movement briefly, her departure was attributed to the recently announced plans for fiscal stimulus. There was brief movement before the euro settled again as the market acknowledged that the plans were inevitable. The euro continues to be placed under pressure by the gathering signs of a downturn amidst global uncertainty.

Quarter of Orihuela shops still shut Twenty-five percent of the Oriolan shops remain closed due to the damages suffered in the floods that took place two weeks ago and more than seventy percent of businesses were affected by the storm. The president of ACMO, Adolfo Valero, said yesterday that "Orihuela without trade is a city without a soul and we have to help each other throughout the region to get ahead." The Councilor for Commerce, Víctor Bernabéu, added that "the situation has been very serious since many businesses had to close and ran out of electricity, which has led to significant loss of stock, furniture and computer equipment." The biggest losses have been those of the sales when the majority of the trades remain closed during five days. The City Council is working on campaigns to promote purchases in local commerce.

Chase the mice away

The Spanish climate is ideal for rodents and the heavy rains mean many are looking for a new home. Therefore, it's never too early to start mouseproofing your home. Not only can they chew through walls and boxes in your pantry, but mice can wreak serious havoc on your home. Particularly, they can gnaw on wires, which can lead to house fires. And they carry a slew of illnesses and bacteria. A build-up of their droppings can worsen allergy and asthma situations, too. Mouse droppings resemble dark grains of rice, about a quarter inch long. Rat droppings look a little wider and longer — about half an inch in length. Trails of little poop pellets are certainly a major sign that you have mice, but the best evidence might not always be scattered along your countertops. Another tip off could be boxes in your pantry have been chewed through. You may see debris on your shelf or gnaw marks on

boxes or bags of food. Sorry to break the news: If you see one mouse, you almost definitely have more than one. They're looking for the same things that humans are looking for — food, water, and shelter. They've gotten so good at living with humans. When you get one, others will find their way in. Plus, they multiply very quickly. Here's what you need to do to eliminate these pesky little critters — as fast and as painless as possible. 1. Find their entry point. Before you put down any traps or bait, do a little detective work. Figure out where they're coming from because putting traps randomly all over your basement floor isn't going to do you any good. Determine where they're living and building nests. Once you've found those places, set your traps around those general areas. Of course, professional exterminators will be able to determine exactly where to put them and how many you'll need. 2. Set store-bought traps. The tried-and-true mousetrap is still very effective. A little dab of peanut butter on each spring-loaded trap is all you need. You can also go the more humane route with a reusable trap (from amazon.com) that doesn't use any

CostaBlancaPeople 1st - 7th October 2019

glue or poison, so you can release the critter. 3. Use caulk and steel wool to seal up the house. Once you handle the infestation inside, you'll want to make sure no additional mice can find their way in. Mice are able to fit through openings the size of a 1e coin. And rats? Well, they can fit through something the size of a 2e coin — incredible! Even if a hole doesn't start out that large, the rodents can gnaw their way to make the opening larger. 4. Prune shrubbery away your house. Shrubbery and branches should be cut back from the exterior of your house. Otherwise, they're like highways for mice and insects to get into your home. Keep stacks of firewood at least 20 feet from the house, as mice like to nest in the piles. 5. Seal food in airtight containers. Put cereal and other pantry items into airtight canisters and you're less likely to attract mice, according to Mannes. "Another thing people don't think about: pet food. If you leave it out in a dog bowl all day, that just gives rodents another source of food. 6. Know when to call a professional — and what to ask. Everyone has a different threshold of what they're willing to put up with or take on themselves. But, if you get to the point of needing a professional, ask your friends and neighbours if they have any recommendations. Then, call to get an estimate to see what — if anything — they'd charge for a consultation.

Arranging a funeral abroad can be complicated – here’s how to make it simple Find out why it’s worth pre-planning your funeral as an expat so you can enjoy your life in the sun Arranging a funeral is a stressful experience, but when you’re navigating a foreign funeral system, it can be even more difficult. When the time comes, will your loved ones know how to arrange a funeral in Spain? The Spanish funeral system can catch many expats unaware. Traditionally, Spanish funerals happen as quickly as 24 to 48 hours after the person passes away. Funerals for expats can take longer, especially if friends and family want to fly out, but this delay could cost hundreds of Euros in extra mortuary expenses. In addition, it’s common for Funeral Directors in Spain to request either part or full payment upfront. Then there’s the language barrier to deal with, along with unfamiliar processes. That’s why it’s so helpful to plan ahead to make things a little easier.

Make funeral arrangements simple Whether you live in Spain the whole year round, or have a summer home here, a prepaid funeral plan lets you make everything simpler for your loved ones when the time comes.

Avalon is the fastest growing provider of funeral plans in Europe. They’ve helped more than 70,000 customers across Spain, the Canaries, Portugal, Cyprus and the UK for over 25 years. An Avalon plan lets you pay for your funeral in advance, either in a lump sum or affordable monthly payments, so that your loved ones don’t have to deal with unexpected costs and complications. “For peace of mind, especially for expatriates and their families, I would highly recommend Avalon’s services,” says Michael, whose mother and step-father had Avalon expat plans when they passed away. “On both occasions, the service we received was exemplary – they made what was such a stressful time in Spain so much easier.” Avalon plans are specially designed for British expats in Spain. An Avalon plan is valid in the UK and Spain, so you can choose to have a funeral in either country. Our local, specialist advisors are on hand to talk through our range of plans and your options so you can relax, knowing everything will be taken care of. To find out more, call +34 865 616 550, or visit www.avalonfuneralplans.com/spain.

Castelsardo

CASTELSARDO is a picturesque historic town on the northern coast of Sardinia. The old town, fortified with a castle, is an interesting and atmospheric place to visit, and Castelsardo's position makes it a good stop on a tour between western Sardinia and the islands and resorts of the east. Today the town's handful of hotels are right down by the sea, with the workaday, traffic-filled bit of town spreading up over the saddle of land below the citadel, and the bit that tourists come to see is still preserved in its old city walls on the headland. While the old town and its fortified coastal position are very appealing, the dual centres of Castelsardo - old town on the hill, new town down nearer the seashore - makes the town less user-friendly than a visitor might wish. Hotels are down by the sea, but the drab lower town is not particularly

welcoming in the evening; and the restaurants of the historic upper town, those which are open in the evening, are a trek uphill. I found Castelsardo to be at its best in the daytime. A local town bus run by a company called Spina runs several times a day up to the castle, around the town and out to the nearby beach resort Lu Bagnu. This may be helpful for visitors. It is a tiring walk up to the castle, especially on a hot day; either along a zigzag road or steeply up an alley and steps. It is worth the climb, though. The picturesque old town is completely different to the modern town spread below. There are old buildings, atmospheric lanes and stairways, and enticing cafe and restaurant tables set around corners and on terraces.

Things to see and do Castelsardo's castle, the Castello dei Doria, is the town's principal tourist sight. It houses the Museo dell'Intreccio del Mediterraneo, a museum of basket-weaving, an important local handicraft. Around the various rooms and halls of the castle are cases containing all sorts of local woven products, from fishing nets to grain storage vessels. The castle was built by the Doria family of Genoa, and for several years in the fourteenth century Castelsardo, then called Castelgenovese, was the home of a Doria bride: the Sardinian heroine Eleanora d'Arborea. The museum is interesting, especially if you are thinking of purchasing some local woven craft products to take home. One of the best bits of the castle, though, is its terrace up among the battlements, with views over the town, along the coast, out to sea over the Gulf of Asinara and towards Corsica. The castle's opening hours vary considerably throughout the year; the lastest times can be found on the council (comune) website, listed on the right. After touring the castle, it is well worth exploring the lanes and alleys down the slopes of the medieval citadel. Restaurants and cafes have tables set up among the stairways and doorways, there are a few tourist and handicraft shops, and the citadel has a great deal of character. Traces of its grim, stone-

clad, impoverished past are brightened by these modern tourist businesses. Old women sit in doorways weaving baskets, beckoning tourists over to admire their displayed goods, often very elaborate and attractive, far superior to the contents of souvenir shops (though rather tricky to pack in luggage). Below the castle, descending through the lanes to the left, alongside the town wall, are two churches which shouldn't be missed on a tour of Castelsardo. Squeezed into a courtyard right against the bare rock and defensive walls is a truly charming small church called Santa Maria delle Grazie. Look out for the arm protruding from the wall, an unusual candleholder. The church has notable painted wood altars, and a bowed stone gallery. Further down the slope, perched on a terrace overlooking the sea, is Castelsardo's cathedral. The building is very impressively sited, and is particularly dramatic at sunset, when its dark stony facade takes on picturesque warm hues. The cathedral, dedicated to Sant'Antonio Abate, contains a prized fifteenth-century altarpiece by a fifteenth-century artist known only as the Maestro di Castelsardo. The crypt (unreliable opening hours) contains a museum of religious art. From the terrace by the cathedral, the visitor can admire grassy green slopes descending past a lower level of fortifications and down to the rocky seashore. Footpaths and steps have been laid out on these slopes, and although when I visited they seemed neglected, and the path network incomplete, this was still a lovely area to explore on foot, clambering down as far as the sea, with spots to sit in the sun and perhaps picnic before returning either up to the citadel or along the slopes to the modern part of town. In the lower part of town there are several souvenir shops, claiming to specialise in handicrafts - artigianato - but generally stocking a vast amount of generic tourist tat. These are worth a glance, not so much in the hope of finding a treasure, but simply to marvel at the scale of the supermarket-size souvenir emporia. In addition to out-of-town beaches - such as Lu Bagnu accessible by car, there is also a nice small beach in Castelsardo, on the seafront road close to most of the town's hotels. It's a sandy and pleasant spot, with a small cafe-bar in the summer. One of the sights of which Castelsardo is most proud lies outside town, on the road to the east. An eroded rock outcrop draws visitors and photographers due to its remarkable resemblence to an elephant. The Roccia dell'Elefante lies alongside the SS134, a short drive from Castelsardo. Two neolithic tombs are cut into the rock.

Price drop for prescription drugs

Spain’s national health authority has reduced the prices of 16,000 types of medication – over-the-counter, prescription and hospital dispensary drugs – which will save the public around €118.5 million a year. The cost to the end consumer will come down from 1st November, which is a public holiday in Spain. They include over the counter drugs such as Ibuprofen and paracetamol, the stomach-protector and protonpump inhibitor Omeprazole, and prescription medication such as antibiotic Amoxicillin and tranquilliser and sleeping pill Lorazepam. Most of these have now dropped to an average of between €1 and €2,

although 20 paracetamol pills of 650mg now only cost 55 cents. Laboratories have already started distributing drugs at the new, lower price from and these will gradually reduce in pharmacies until 31st October, after which they will all drop down to the new prices. Nearly three-quarters of the cost saved to the health system will be on medicines that come from hospital dispensaries, which are typically stronger, more specialist, produced in much lesser quantities, or very expensive. These drugs have always been free of charge to the patients, but as the laboratories will be charging less for them, the saving is

passed onto the health system. The remaining saving of €39m will be shared between the patient and the health service. This is because drugs prescribed by a doctor, unlike over the counter medication, are sold to patients at a set percentage of their actual cost – ranging from 10 percent to 50 percent depending upon the type of medicine and the patient's income – whilst these same drugs, where they are available without a prescription or on the instructions of a doctor in the private sector, are paid for by the customer at full price. It is estimated that, overall, consumers will save about €5.31m a year.

Staying for my son

He won’t commit

My marriage is on the rocks. My wife and I have slept in separate rooms since our son was 4 - he’s now 10, and I don’t think I can live life this way any longer. The only light in my life is my son, (and our dogs). My parents know how miserable I am as I confided in them recently. They said I should leave if I am that unhappy. They said I could go there, and bring the dogs. My son asked me the other day, why I am always sad. It broke my heart.

I have been seeing this guy for 12 months. We hardly ever go out but instead spend nights together at my place. When I ask him about moving in together or getting married he says he doesn’t want a serious relationship and we are fine as we are. When I bring up our future he won’t carry on the conversation. I spoke to one of his ex’s and she said that I will never change him. He is just out for what he can get and was the same with her until he met someone he liked better. But I have very deep feelings for this guy. Should I hold on in there until he is ready?

Life is too short to be miserable, and you owe it to your son to be the best Dad you can be. It is possible to be a good parent and separate from your partner. Marriages break down all the time. Not sleeping together for six years is not normal. That’s not a happy marriage, it’s just a living arrangement. Have a good talk to your wife. You might find she isn’t entirely happy either, and may want the same.

It sounds like he is getting what he wants without any real commitment, and that doesn’t sound like the sort of relationship you want. When two people feel the same for each other, time is irrelevant and you tend to know right away whether you belong together. If you can tear yourself away from him, you should do so. He doesn’t sound like marriage material to me.

HOW SERIOUS ARE YOU ABOUT SELLING YOUR HOME? Rebecca Serwotka Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! Featured on Best Buy Spain – Property TV – Sky Channel 189.

A

re you one of the many people that put your property on the market, knowing full well your asking price is unachievable?

This occurs more often than you think, and a problem that has nothing to do with the property itself, but is a psychological dilemma for you, the homeowner. When you knowingly put your property on the market for a higher than market value price, you’re not doing yourself any favours. You need to ask yourself, why is it that you’re even on the market, and if you really do want to sell? If you’ve been on the market for more than a year, and there is nothing structurally wrong with your house, then I can guarantee the problem is your asking price. When your property has been up for sale for such a long time with offers you’ve been consistently refusing, this is the number one tell tale sign that you need to change your way of thinking, and ask yourself what it is you really want to achieve. The property market has been quite busy, so far this year, but buyers won’t be duped into paying over the odds, so you need to ask your trusted Real Estate Agent for an up-to-date price assessment on your home. But more importantly, you need to listen to them. By keeping your property above market value, will deter buyers from

even putting an offer forward. Maybe you always get cold feet when an offer is forthcoming? You’re quite happy to stay put, moaning and groaning on how long you’ve been up for sale, as you get scared when you think things are moving too fast, when you know you’re going to need time to sort through your effects for the impending move. But let’s face it, you’ve been on the market for so long, and you’re still putting the de-cluttering off! What does that tell you? The answer is maybe you’re not ready to actually let go, and if you have a reasonable asking price, you may just, dare I say it? SELL! With any home sale, it can feel stressful. But you’re not having to move out tomorrow, so don’t panic! Speak with your Real Estate Agent, and tell them you need a longer time between reservation to completion. They will work with you and help you along the way. Choose the correct price for your home, get it sold, and move on to your next chapter in life. Don’t you feel in limbo, waiting for a sale that you’re holding yourself back on? Act now and stop putting off the inevitable. You’ll be glad in the end you did, when you’re sitting relaxed in your new home! Selling your home? Enjoy the journey!

Bingeworthy Box Sets The Get Down

New Girl After going through a rough breakup, awkward and upbeat Jess (Zooey Deschanel) moves in with three single guys. Intelligent and witty Nick is an underachiever who took the bartender off-ramp on his road to success. Schmidt obsesses over his social standing and looks at Jess as a personal project. Winston is a competitive former athlete who, after realizing he will never become a pro, moves into the loft. Together with Jess' best friend, Cece, they bond to form an unlikely, and dysfunctional, family.

The multi-talented Baz Luhrmann and a team of collaborators -- Oscarwinner Catherine Martin, legendary MC Nas, Grandmaster Flash, Pulitzer-winning playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis, and hip-hop historian Nelson George - have created a musicdriven drama that documents the emergence of a new art form. Set in the late 1970s, when New York was at the brink of bankruptcy and disco was dying out, the rise of hip-hop is told through the lives, art, music and dance of a group of young people in the South Bronx.

Dancing On Ice confirms third celebrity Footballer Kevin Kilbane has been confirmed as the third contestant to take part in the new series of Dancing On Ice. Kilbane, who is also a pundit on Match of the Day, revealed the exciting news during an appearance on Talksport Radio. Speaking about his impending appearance on the ice, Kilbane said: “I am going on as a total novice. “I'm starting from scratch here. This is going to be a massive challenge for me.”

He added: “I've been taking it easy for the last few years since I finished (football) so let's just see how this one goes.” The footballer joins Love Island star Maura Higgins and TV presenter Michael Barrymore in the line up. Higgins, who made the announcement during an appearance on This Morning on Tuesday 24 September, admitted that she had only ice skated twice in her life.

“I don’t want to let anyone down...I need someone strict I think because otherwise I'll throw a strop and lay on the floor,” she added. Meanwhile, Barrymore explained that he was excited about joining the show. “I'm delighted to say that I'll be joining the Dancing on Ice line up for 2020,” he said in a statement. “I'm looking forward to meeting Holly and Phil. I'm very excited...it's performance time!"

The new series, which launches in January 2020, will also see John Barrowman sitting on the judging panel following Jason Gardiner’s decision to step down. Expressing his excitement over joining the show, Barrowman said: “I am so excited to be returning to the Dancing On Ice family. “Unlike most I have been through the rigorous task of skating live as a contestant in the first series.

“This is a thrilling adventure for me and I hope to bring a Fresh, Fun and Fab-u-lous angle to the judging panel.”

Facebook says it won't fact Venus was once habitable check politicians' posts Facebook has announced that its efforts to reduce false news and misinformation on the platform do not apply to politicians. The company said it exempts politicians from its third-party fact-checking process and that that's been the policy for more than a year. In Washington, DC, Facebook's vice president of global affairs and communications outlined the company's policies regarding politicians, during a speech about the company's plans to prevent outside interference in the 2020 election. "From now on we will treat speech from politicians as newsworthy content that should, as a general rule, be seen and heard," Nick Clegg said in a post that included the full text of his speech. Since the 2016 US presidential election, Facebook has been trying to prove it's doing what it must to combat misinformation on the site and thwart election meddling from Russia, Iran and other countries. The social network has cracked down on the issue through a variety of means, including partnerships with factchecking organizations and advertisements in newspapers. However, Clegg said Facebook doesn't submit posts by politicians to this process, even

when they violate the company's content rules. "We don't believe ... that it's an appropriate role for us to referee political debates and prevent a politician's speech from reaching its audience and being subject to public debate and scrutiny," he said. There are exceptions to this largely hands-off approach though. The policy won't apply to ads and speech that may result in violence. "Content that has the potential to incite violence, for example, may pose a safety risk that outweighs the public interest value," Clegg said. Factors that'll be considered include whether an election is underway in the country or if it's at war, as well as the country's political structure and whether it has a free press. Social media giants like Facebook and Twitter have come under criticism about what content they leave up or pull down. Twitter announced in June that it's changing how it handles tweets from politicians and government leaders that violate its rules but are still in the public's interest. The social network said it would start placing a notice over tweets that break its rules, forcing users to click or tap on the warning to see the tweet.

That policy even applies to President Donald Trump. With nearly 65 million followers, Trump is among Twitter's most followed users, and his tweets can be controversial. Twitter has faced calls to boot Trump off the platform over allegations that he's spreading hate speech or inciting violence. Earlier this month, four Republican senators sent a letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg accusing the company of censoring pro-life content and calling for another audit that looks into concerns that the social network suppresses conservative speech. Facebook has repeatedly denied these accusations. "I know some people will say we should go further," Clegg said in his speech. "That we are wrong to allow politicians to use our platform to say nasty things or make false claims. But imagine the reverse. "Would it be acceptable to society at large to have a private company in effect become a selfappointed referee for everything that politicians say?" he said. "I don't believe it would be. In open democracies, voters rightly believe that, as a general rule, they should be able to judge what politicians say themselves."

The planet Venus may have been habitable for billions of years, Nasa scientists have calculated. New computer models of the climate history of the second planet from the Sun, show that until around 700 million years ago temperatures ranged from 68F (20C) to 122F (50C), cool enough for liquid water. In the 1980s, Nasa’s Pioneer Venus mission found hints that the planet once had a shallow ocean, but because it receives far more sunlight than Earth, scientists believed it had quickly evaporated before life could become established. With no water left on the surface, carbon dioxide rose in the atmosphere, triggering a runaway greenhouse effect that created current conditions. Today Venus has a crushing carbon dioxide atmosphere 90 times as thick as Earth’s and temperatures at the surface reach 864 degrees Fahrenheit (462C), making life impossible.

But new computer modelling by Nasa Goddard Institute for Space Science suggests that the ocean may have lasted for two to three billion years. Not only does it suggest that life could have once evolved on Venus, but it opens up new possibilities about where aliens may exist outside of our Solar System. “Our hypothesis is that Venus may have had a stable climate for billions of years,” said lead researcher Dr Michael Way. At around 4.2 billion years ago, soon after its formation, Venus would have completed a period of rapid cooling and its atmosphere would have been dominated by carbon-dioxide. If the planet evolved in an Earth-

like way over the next 3 billion years, the carbon dioxide would have been drawn down by rocks and locked into the surface. By around 715 million years ago, the atmosphere would have been dominated by nitrogen with trace amounts of carbon dioxide and methane – similar to the Earth’s today – and these conditions could have remained stable up until present times. However Dr Way believes that intense volcanic activity around 700 million years ago transformed Venus. One possibility is that large amounts of magma bubbled up, releasing carbon dioxide from molten rocks into the atmosphere. The magma solidified before reaching the surface and this created a barrier that meant that the gas could not be reabsorbed, causing runaway global warming.

New Google laptop Google is expected to reveal its Pixel 4 phones at an event to be held on 15th October in New York, but there are also hints about an upcoming laptop. The Pixelbook Go, which the company hinted at back in April, will have a 13.3-inch, 16:9 screen and come in 1080p and 4K models, 9to5Google

reported recently. The higher-end 4K option will have the same "Molecular Display" branding as Google's Pixel Slate tablet, according to the site, which cited anonymous sources. You'll apparently be able to choose between models with Intel Core m3, i5 or i7 processors,

8GB or 16GB of RAM, and 64GB, 128GB or 256GB of storage. The Pixelbook Go will feature a USB-C port on each side, along with a 3.5mm headphone jack and a 2MP front-facing camera that can capture 1080p at 60fps, according to 9to5Google.

How to get rid of milia Those hard, white bumps under your skin that just won't let up, no matter how hard you squeeze? They probably aren't spots. Often tiny but always annoying, milia can crop up anywhere under the skin. Luckily, there are so many simple ways to stop them from rearing their heads and some seriously effective methods for milia removal if you're late to the game. Milia are small white bumps or cysts that appear on the surface of the skin when dead skin cells become trapped. They are made up of keratin, a protein on the outer layer of the skin, and whilst they resemble whiteheads, they are not related to acne or infection and are simply a pocket of normal skin. They shouldn't be treated in the same way. There are endless benefits to exfoliating your skin, including: minimising hyper-pigmentation, banishing blemishes and reducing superficial acne scarring - and seeing as milia are a result of trapped skin cells, exfoliation is brilliant at keeping them from springing up, too. Superficial peels containing AHAs and BHAs, including glycolic and salicylic acid, provide accelerated, chemical exfoliation without the need to aggressively scrub your skin. There are also many tried and tested treatments available for the removal of milia. However one of the most common is by using a sterile needle to create an incision in the skin, making way for careful extraction. But to avoid infection and scarring, it's best not to attempt it at home without consulting a professional first.

How to find the best parking space The hunt for a parking space is enough to drive anybody crazy. Especially in heavily populated areas, parking is an age-old dilemma. Do you settle for the first spot available or gamble on finding a space closer to your destination? To minimise the amount of time spent searching drivers should utilise a “prudent” strategy, according to a new paper published in the Journal of Statistical Mechanics. That means parking with moderate optimism. In designing their thought experiment, the authors created three parking strategies: meek, prudent, and optimistic. They assumed a person’s walking speed was equivalent to their driving speed and imagined that only one car entered their fictional lot at a time (driving from right to left). Using this framework and a differential equation, the authors found meek drivers were the worst off. “The meek driver wastes no time looking for a parking spot and just parks at the first available spot that is behind the most distant parked car,” the authors wrote. “This strategy is risibly inefficient; many good parking spots are unfilled and most cars are parked far from the target.” Instead of settling immediately, drivers should press on. The prudent driver proceeds to the first available gap between parked cars, parking at the

leftmost space. If none exists, then they must backtrack to the meek position. Prudent parking, the authors contend, is the ideal approach because it (typically) wastes the least amount of time. The third strategy—optimism—is the boldest, but also offers the greatest potential payoff. In this scenario, an optimistic driver continues all the way to their destination and doubles back to find the nearest spot. If they’re in a crowded

lot, though, this can backfire and result in wasted time. Of course, their thought experiment has some limitations. For one, it doesn’t account for parking at a crowded stadium, where the rush to exit is often more time-consuming than initial parking. It also doesn’t consider autonomous vehicles, or the financial toll from dents suffered when parking an expensive car in close proximity to others.

The road to selfie destruction Distractions whilst driving are one of the main contributing factors to road traffic incidents. In fact, along with inappropriate speed, alcohol and drug use, and not wearing a seat belt, they form part of the #Fatal4 of road safety concerns. Using the mobile phone is one of the biggest causes of distractions, although our concentration can be diverted by other things, such as loud music or the radio, tiredness, and our passengers. The mobile has become a monster of distraction since the launch of the smartphone which transformed communication and the consumption habits of the world population, achieving the fastest commercial penetration in history, especially in Spain, where the percentage of population that use them is among the highest in the world. In fact, 29 million Spaniards own at least one of these phones, whose use already extends to all areas of our lives, including some improper ones, such as driving. A study " Smartphones: the impact of mobile addiction on traffic accidents" , carried out by the Fundación LíneaDirecta in collaboration with the University Institute of Traffic Research and Road Safety of the University of Valencia ( INTRAS ), has revealed some startling realities. The report, which estimates for the first time the number of deaths and incidents due to improper use of the mobile, concludes that this bad habit could have caused the death of 390 people a year. These figures make using a Smartphone one of the main causes of death on the road. In fact, distractionsfrom the mobile phone cause more than 20% of the total number of

deaths in traffic incidents every year and almost 8,000 incidents with victims. Despite awareness campaigns, mobile use among motorists is more widespread than previously believed. In fact, 13 million drivers, that is, one in two, say they use their mobile whilst driving and about 600,000 see themselves as " authentic mobile addicts" and recognise they "can't stop looking at it" while they are behind the wheel. In Catalonia, specifically, half of the drivers use their cell phones while driving, a percentage higher than the national average (48%). Those Catalans are also “selfie” obsessed and around 8% admit to having taken photographs of themselves whilst driving, a percentage slightly higher than 7% of the average in Spain. As if that were not enough, nationwide 2.3 million (9%) claim to have interacted on Social Networks while driving and almost 10 million confess to putting messages on WhatsApp while driving (37%).

By Autonomous Communities, motorists from Murcia, Galicia and Madrid admit greater use of the Smartphone while driving, while those from Asturias, Extremadura and La Rioja are the ones who do the least. Catalonia, meanwhile, is in the national average. As for the profile of the driver who usually uses the Smartphone while he is behind the wheel, the average driver is a young man of 18 to 24 years who uses it especially in traffic lights, traffic jams and when he considers that “the road is safe” (all of which are prohibited by the way). Asked about the reason for using and looking at the mobile while driving, the reasons are to see "if they have something urgent", followed by "work reasons", and "boredom." In the last 5 years almost one million fines have been imposed for mobile phone use and around 2.8 million points have been lost from driving licences, registering an increase of 13.2% in the last 2 years.

Speeding up slowing down We have already seen the maximum permitted speed on roads out of towns reduced, but the Director General of Traffic isn´t stopping there with the commitment to reducing fatalities and serious injuries on the roads, as speed limit reduction plans are set to be accelerated. As part of strategies discussed around mobility, experts believe that the only sure way of reducing speed related road deaths is slowing down traffic. Currently, with the roads becoming increasingly shared spaces in towns and cities, with cyclists, pedestrians, including children all mixing, the safest maximum speed is considered to be around 12 kilometres per hour, similar in fact to those of 1909. However, the plans for pacification are not quite that drastic, but plans are being implemented to reduce the maximum permitted speed to 30 kilometres per hour on many roads in towns and cities. According to the DGT, 80% of the streets of our cities, which support 20% of the total traffic, will have a maximum permitted speed limit of 30 kilometres per hour. Only the remaining 20%, those that support 80% of the traffic, will keep the current limit of 50 kilometres per hour. As car design and technology have improved over the last century, helping to protect the vehicle occupants, little has so far been achieved in protecting those outside the vehicle, the more vulnerable road users. Those outside the vehicle, namely pedestrians, motorcyclists and cyclists, account for 80% of the 500 deaths registered in urban incidents every year. A simple reduction in speed can mean the difference between life and death, it´s that simple. Of course, the responsibility works both ways and those classed as more vulnerable will also have to do their bit. The road environment is ever changing, as is the fleet on the road network, but

one thing remains consistent, that human action plays the biggest part in road safety. IN the first six months of the year, new car registrations have fallen by 7%. Coincidentally, new motorbike registrations have increased by the same amount. One in five cars are now leased, rather than purchased, and there has been a massive increase in the use of electric scooters, in Madrid for example, there are an estimated 15,000 electric scooters moving through the network daily. There has also been an inevitable massive increase in the number of incidents involving these scooters. Although legislation is in place to control the use of electric scooters, many towns are yet to start enforcing the law, opting for an educational strategy first, although this too is taking a long time to appear, whilst still people are being injured and killed. The problem cannot be ignored. Electric scooters are not going away, and so plans for their integration must be included in the Sustainable Mobility Plans, according to experts. Motorcycles have already become one of the priorities of the DGT. The actions of the riders now being closely scrutinised so that they too can be aware of the dangers they pose to themselves and others. The onus is shifting away from “think bike”, and more towards encouraging bikers themselves to be more responsible. In the future we may well remove the human element from driving altogether, with the reality of autonomous vehicles just around the corner, but they too must be included in any plans being created now, not just believed to be a future consideration, because urban mobility is a reality right now, and the risks being posed are real, current and in need of awareness, education and, as is the inevitable consequence of drivers not taking responsibility, enforcement.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Another weekend of Premier League action has been and gone with Jermaine Jenas somehow still being paid more than the living wage for providing “analysis” to the masses – was Hugo Lloris “unprofessional” for suddenly panicking, thinking he could perform a Cruyff turn and get away from Danny Ings? No, of course he wasn’t – he was still paid handsomely for his error, one would imagine. And he still came out and held his hands up to the error, which is more than many others do, eh Jermaine? There must have been something in the isotonic sports drinks on Saturday as goalkeeper howlers were almost as frequent as incorrect VAR decisions. Up at Bramall Lane, Premier League new-boys Sheffield United (and yes, I can continue to call them new-boys until the next international break)

went toe-to-toe with runaway leaders Liverpool and looked like they might come out with at least a point – Virgil van Dijk hasn’t looked so rocked since seeing David James attempt the paso doble on Strictly and Adrian strengthened his claim to be the best Spanish keeper in the league. Mo Salah was having one of those afternoons where, shall we say, the wet surface must have been affecting his ability to stand up – it was awfully slippy out there. Yet a strong rearguard performance and the occasional threat on the counter are a little bit worthless when Dean Henderson managed to let Gino Wijnaldum’s effort from distance go through his legs for the eventual winner. Watching the mistake unfold in slow motion, I was instantly transferred back to school where the virtues of cricket’s long-barrier was drilled into me by Mr Murden, our geography teaching cricket nut and I cannot help but feel that Hendo could have benefited from some of the same advice. Still, he’s a young, talented goalkeeper who will win Sheff Utd more points than he gives away so his manager was always going to come out and back him public, wasn’t he? Well, yeah – about that. Chris Wilder is quickly developing a reputation for calling it how he sees it but surely it was obvious that the kid was distraught after the goal so hanging him out to dry in your post-match presser might not be the best thing for his confidence? These British managers, eh? I mean, you wouldn’t catch Jose Mourinho doing such a thing. Jumping to the evening game, King Kloppo’s side had opened up a rather substantial eight-point lead over Manchester City as Peppy G’s men rolled up at Goodison Park, one of the view grounds in England where they sometimes struggle. When Dominic Calvert-Lewin bundled in Everton’s equaliser, some Liverpool fans on social media were already planning where they should go that evening for their Premier

League 2019/20 winners celebration party, but it was never going to be that simple – Marco Silva has never beaten Pep Guardiola after all and, being blunt, Marco Silva probably isn’t going to beat too many more managers before they play managerial musical chairs once again at Everton. City sorted themselves out well enough to leave Merseyside with a 3-1 win and those Anfield title celebrations might have to be put on ice – you know, until at least Halloween. Down at London’s latest NFL stadium, it was a curious case of a game that really was not that entertaining actually having a bit of everything. Take Serge Aurier, for example. One thing Serge has proven in his rare outings in the Poch’s starting eleven is that he loves a tackle and he loves a yellow card. So once he launched himself at Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand for the first one, a second one was as inevitable as Hugo making a prat of himself with the ball at his feet at some point. However, for Aurier’s second yellow – moments after the first one – he can feel a little hard done by. Not for the foul, not at all – if you are on a yellow and then you tug the shirt of the player

Serge Aurier

sprinting past you then it’s reasonable to expect the kitman to be running the bath for you. The bigger issue was the fact that moments before Southampton knocked it into the space Serge insisted on vacating, the ball was at least two yards out of play and the lino was standing right there. Let’s be honest here – with the advent of VAR the linesman doesn’t have a great deal to do now and even less to get right. Seeing whether the ball is in our out of play is a basic requirement and this one was a proper booboo. That said, none of this explains Spurs’ apparent desire to shoot themselves in the foot with the whole “let’s play it out from the back no matter what” approach – if there is one thing that needs to be looked at this season, it is sides that think it is a good idea to start playing rondos in their own area just because there is a new goal-kick rule that they want to have fun with. Lloris hesitated, took a touch and saw Danny Ings bundle it over the line – and then, better still, proceeded to boot every goal-kick from thereon in up the pitch to Harry Kane. Why not just do that from the start? The horse has already bolted on the “this is probably safer as Southampton press pretty well”

thinking, Hugo. Harry Kane saved the day for Spurs, as per. Chelsea are in serious danger of becoming the darlings of England which feels wrong on more levels than I can even count. These young whippersnappers are taking some of us older football followers back to the days where Paul Scholes was seen and not heard, David Beckham had never heard of the Spice Girls and Gary Neville wasn’t even the best player at his breakfast table. Mason Mount is leading the way, and it was he that pounced on more daft tippy-tappy in Brighton’s own area to win the penalty that was dispatched by Jorginho. Brighton should feel like they won’t get relegated this season, mainly because Tammy Abraham didn’t score against them and he only scores against Championship level teams. Leicester City (good to watch) and Newcastle United (terrible to watch) went up against each other on Sunday and Leicester had to take to the field without last week's match-winner and current social media winner, James Maddison. The bit of rain that has the UK on severe weather warnings made the King Power surface nice and slick which suited the side with the ability to pass it to players in the same colour shirts (Leicester, in case there was any confusion). The very same slick surface probably had something to do with Isaac Hayden smashing into Dennis Praet and picking up a well-deserved red card. Dubravka then added to the goalkeeping shame of the weekend before Brentan was able to smugly watch the Foxes eat the Magpies for a late Sunday afternoon lunch. Bournemouth and West Ham normally put on an entertaining feast and their match on the South Coast was not lacking in ingredients. VAR is only used in Premier League grounds (and Dean Court) and it was in full swing here. On Saturday night, West Ham were third – their fans haven’t had such nose-bleeds since seeing how high and far away from the pitch their seats were in the Athletics Stadium. But, and this feels as odd as complimenting Chelsea, they have a fun team to watch right now – in Yarmalenko they have a match-winner who would not look out of place in an actual top-six side and Felipe Anderson’s little cushion header for Aaron Cresswell’s late equaliser was delightful. What’s happening to the world I know? Bournemouth were decent too and even managed to upset the normally super-calm Pellegrini. Aston Villa might want to consider turning some of these winning positions into three points once in a while. Dean Smith’s men are leading the table for “throwing it all away when winning” and that’s normally the kind of table that leads to relegation. As for Sean Dyche, he never misses a moment to talk up his side’s “never say die” spirit and the fact they “never give up”. Surely that should be a given, Sean, no? Is anyone else thinking that Norwich beating City the other week was the worst thing that could have happened to them, or do you just not care? Crystal Palace had that rare feeling of winning a game of football at home and they treated their fans to a whole two goals as well. More importantly for Roy Hodgson was the fact that someone has remembered the password to Wilfried Zaha and he put on his best performance of the season so far.

Busters Golf society Imanyo Golf Society This September our Lee Barber memorial shield was played at an old favourite of ours Alenda Golf, the course was as usual in excellent condition and a very good test of golf, Alenda has great staff great everything however due to their 2020 price structure this course has set its price possibly too high for many societies. Nineteen players teed off for the game in very good weather conditions, our nearest the pins were, on the 3rd John Rush, the 5th along with the 12th hole was taken by Peter List, Ray Pollock won the 16th all nearest the pins

received a sleeve of golf balls Our best front nine was won by John Rush who received a sleeve of golf balls and our best back nine being taken by Gilly Gilbert who also received golf balls our third place with thirty-three points was won by Martin Collins winning a bottle of Rioja our runner up with thirtyfour points was Brian Ead taking home Red and white wines, but with an excellent thirty-six points our Shield winner for 2019 was Ian Allison taking home a bottle of Bacardi and a mini replica of the shield, I have to say well done to all players, and congratulations to Ian Allison who over the past

three years has managed to win all of our three trophies, not forgetting our soccer card winner who selected Chelsea, Kjell Svenson. With three games to go in Busters 2019 season, there is a close-run now for our player of the year competition and this is when the competition starts hotting up. Our next meeting will be at Alto Real another old favourite of ours, a course which over the past five years has improved significantly.

This competition was rearranged from the previous week as the Alicante region was hit by the worst Gota Fria in over one hundred years causing life threatening damage to people and properties. Our sponsor for that day had to cancel her flight for a week, even when we played today we still had players that could not get out of their property due to the severity of the flooding. Arriving at the course we found that everything was nearly back to normal all though most of the bunkers needed repairing so we

all thank Antonio and his ground staff for all their hard work. The format was full handicap Stableford, split into two groups. Winner of the Wyn Evans Salver was our handicap secretary Martin Gadney with a nice handicap cutting 41 points, runner up on count back with Tom Goulden was Ian Chetwynd with 32 points. Winner of group B was our sponsor, Judy Evans, with an excellent 39 points, runner up was “The Joker” Mick Billins with 38 points. There were six nearest the pins, winners were, holes 2 and 5

“The wine Collector” Brian court, hole 8 Chris Houghton, hole 10 Martin Gadney, hole 15 Chris Baillie and hole 17 no winner. The presentation was held at Imanyo’s, many thanks to Judy Evans for sponsoring the day and presenting the prizes and thank you to Antonio, Norma and all the staff for looking after us, the football card was won by Margret Baillie with Rangers raising another €40 for our charities 2019. www.imanyogolfsociety.com imanyogolfsociety@gmail.com

Las Ramblas Golf Society CD Montesinos V Daya Nueva We rang the changes a bit on Monday and played an unusual, but very enjoyable, new format. In teams of three it was the best two scores to count on each hole and all three to count on the par 3s. With 82 points, Olga Douglas, Paul Brown and Mike Chapman must have thought they’d done enough to take the spoils. However, with a total of 88 points, it was John Shervell, Joyce McClusky and myself (yes I was shocked as well) who romped home to victory. There was a major diversion on

Tuesday when a number of our members enjoyed a few hours in that cauldron otherwise known as The San Miguel Bowls Club. Our sincere thanks go to the players and staff of the club for their patience in showing us how the game should be played. Mike Mahony’s golf technique was obviously better than his Bowls skills as he took 1st place in Wednesday’s dreaded Medal round with a nett score of 70. Terry Cullen was close behind him with 72 and Mike Chapman managed 3rd (on countback from

Liz Robertson) with 73. Just the two ‘2’s today, each going going to Olga Douglas and RegAkehurst On Friday it was a 2 ball better ball and coming out on top with 44 points were Benedicte Kruse and Marleen Billen. Por ultimo, Hendrick Oldenziel says to his caddy, ‘I’d move heaven and earth to break 100 on this course’. Caddy replies, ‘Try heaven, you’ve already moved most of the earth’. Pues hasta la semana que viene. Peter Reffell
