Don’t Be Fuelish! ‘
‘Fossil Fuels’ - pretty much a dirty word these days; and fills me with guilt and dread as I need to use petrol to get to work and gas to heat my house, all the while contributing to the exacerbation of climate change which I actively campaign against.
I
I’m sure many people feel the same and are unsure what they can do to mitigate their impact, so here are a few little wins:

• Get radiator thermostats and only heat the rooms you use
•
• Turn the heat down a couple of degrees and put on a thick cosy jumper; and maybe a throw or two on the sofa to snuggle into with the TV
•
• If you need a new oven, change to electric
•
• Car share where you can, and only use the car when you must and plan your trips to minimise mileage
•
• Use public transport. Lobby your MP for better, affordable local transport
•
• If you need to replace your car, consider electric Pretty obvious options even if a little inconvenient. But here’s one I bet you haven’t considered –

• Change your Bank account to an Ethical investor Did you know that the majority of our High Street Banks invest heavily in fossil fuels with the UK’s top five banks providing around £220bn in finance for fossil fuel projects from 2016 to 2020, and your money is helping them! If we all transferred our accounts, pensions and investments to ethical providers then they wouldn’t have the money to support the fossil fuel industry. And here’s another thing I’m fairly certain you won't know anything about - Schlumberger. The world's largest oilfield services company, providing oil and gas extraction technologies to fossil fuel companies including Shell and BP. It operates in 85 countries and, it’s Schlumberger Gould Research Centre in Cambridge (deep connections to University of Cambridge), has developed some of the industry's most harmful technologies: Arctic exploration, deep-sea drilling, tar sands, fracking and "re-fracking".
