Cambodia Evoking a Sense of Wonder
For more than 700 years from the 9th to 15th century, the Khmer Empire was a dominant power in South East Asia and had left behind an architectural legacy unmatched anywhere else on earth – Angkor Wat and the whole archaeological park, with over 200 gorgeous temples on a 200 sq km plain. Some compare it with placing all the churches in Europe into London or Paris! If there is only one archaeological site that you are going to visit, it has to be this. Even if you are not a history buff, Angkor Wat is not to be missed. Exploring Angkor need not be just temple hopping. You can ride an elephant or cycle from one temple to another or go on a micro-light to get a bird’s-eye view of the site. In between the temples, ride an All Terrain Vehicle to explore the countryside or experience the unique ways of life on the water of the Tonle Sap Lake. Besides Angkor, the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, is a good introduction to the history of the current royal family as well as the dark chapter in its recent history – the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge. And what best way to end a trip than to relax on a beach that has not been trampled by mass tourism – Sihanoukville.
