Most notable is the city’s fortifications - built to protect it from the numerous pirate attacks it came under. 5. Today, this fashionable seaside resort is filled with the sounds of music and bright with colour and tradition! 6. GALAPAGOS ISLANDS Rising from the ocean floor through volcanic eruptions, the Galapagos Islands is situated in the Pacific Ocean some 1000km from Ecuador and is one of the most spectacular and remote wildlife frontiers on Earth. The islands are a living museum of evolutionary changes. Free and fearless animals, different from any others found elsewhere, roam and call these islands home. A trip to the Galapagos Islands is a life-enriching experience to discover a wild and pristine paradise. To visit the islands, you can opt to stay in a land based resort and embark on day trips to the nearby islands or choose to take a cruise. Country Holidays endorses the latter as it allows one to cover much more distance and access islands not possible for a land based day tripper. All Galapagos cruises include twice daily guided shore excursions in small groups (limited to 16 per group) to the most fantastic location on each island and your experienced naturalist will introduce the mysterious and wonderful secrets of its flora, fauna and geology, by way of walking, hiking or snorkeling.

Unless you are a die-hard enthusiast for wildlife, you would probably visit the Galapagos once in a lifetime. So, the most common questions when planning a trip to the islands would be the length of the cruise, size of the ship and the month of travel.
Length of cruise: Cruises range from 3 to 14 nights. The longer the length, the more islands you will be able to visit. A 3 or 4 night cruise gives you a taste of the islands and its main highlights while the 7 nights cruise is the best, allowing one to experience the remote islands with some of the best snorkeling/scuba diving in the area. Seasons: The Galapagos climate is influenced entirely by the ocean currents. The warmest months are from December to April featuring warmer days, clearer skies, sporadic rains and a calmer sea. May to November are cooler, but tradeoff with a rougher sea.
Size of the ship: There are many ships plying the waters in Galapagos, from yachts to large cruise ships. Large ships (80-100 passengers) are more stable, spacious with amenities and appeal to travellers concerned with sea sickness. Smaller ships (12-20 passengers) tend to rock more and are noisier, as space is restricted and one cannot get too far away from the engine, but is compensated with a more intimate experience on board. Small ships are highly flexible with stops and allows more time on the islands. Mid-sized ships (40-60 passengers) offer the “middle ground”, with the intimacy of the smaller ships combined with the space and amenities typically found on larger ships.

Fly to Antarctica in comfort and join a boutique wilderness adventure.
What makes Antarctica so attractive? The White Continent is spectacularly rich in wildlife and natural beauty. Best visited by ship, Antarctica has been louring adventurous travellers since the time of early explorers. As a modern-day traveller you can reach Antarctica in one of two ways: you could board a ship in South America and sail south on a harrowing two-day journey across the notoriously stormy waters of the Drake Passage; or you can choose the better way and fly there in comfort, embarking the ship directly in Antarctica. Since 2003, ANTARCTICA XXI has pioneered Air-Cruise expeditions to the White Continent. You board a jet aircraft in Punta Arenas, Chile, and fly to an Antarctic base, thereby avoiding the
stormy passage between South America and the Antarctic Peninsula. It’s a remarkably convenient, comfortable, and fast way to reach one of the last wilderness places in the world. Once in Antarctica, you sail aboard a small ice-strengthened expedition vessel along ice-filled fjords and among majestic icebergs, while enjoying the company of sea birds, penguins, seals and whales. Each day, you disembark by Zodiac and in small groups explore the landscape together with expert polar guides. You can hike to sites of extraordinary natural beauty and take part in exploratory Zodiac excursions to otherwise inaccessible areas. On board the ship you enjoy a yacht-like atmosphere, with excellent hospitality and an engaging program of lectures and presentations.
16 departures between November 2013 and February 2014. Rates from US$3,995 to US$19,795 per person.

You will also need to be reasonably fit to walk on icecovered grounds (nothing technical) and climb up and down steps to get on and off smaller inflatable watercraft for meaningful in-depth explorations.

Weather conditions: Expect dry and windy weather with strong sun. Temperatures range from -10 to 5 Degrees Celsius. Itineraries are at the mercy of the changing weather conditions.
