Welcome to Bungay
miles to the north you have access to lots of other facilities and attractions. Top that off with a trip to the beach at Kessingland or Southwold (both are around 15 miles) and you have all you could need – the perfect mix of quiet countryside, farmers fields, bright lights of the city and the call of the coast. One word of caution though. Bungay is famous as a favourite haunt of Black Shuck – the large dog-like creature with flaming eyes the size of saucers! Black Shuck famously terrorised the congregation at St Mary’s Church on 4th August 1577, the same night the beast visited Blythburgh Church, leaving scorch marks on the door as it fled. This local legend is where the many references to ‘Black Dog’ originate in the names of clubs, groups and local businesses. We love Bungay for this sense of history, the diverse mix of businesses and the great local community. We hope you find your 2022/23 Bungay Town Guide useful, interesting and informative.
Nestled on the banks of the river Waveney, at the heart of the Waveney Valley is where you will find Bungay. A pretty market town oozing with history which can be followed back to Roman times. This is a town with something for everyone. Great food and drink, independent shops offering excellent choice and value, riverside walks, a round of golf or time in the gym. What ever you want, you can find it here. At the centre of the town is the Market Place and the 17th century Buttercross – one of the must visit and most Instagramable sites in town. The market has longbeen an integral part of this town and there is still a weekly market every Thursday. The location of Bungay is one of the town’s great pulls for both tourists and those looking for a slice of Suffolk’s good life on a more permanent basis. With other local market towns of Beccles and Halesworth just a few miles away and the lovely city of Norwich only around 15

main power base. The Howard family, Dukes of Norfolk took possession in 1483. They had little interest in the castle which gradually dwindled into decay, until partial excavations and renovations were organised in 1933. Then in 1988, the Howard family gifted it to the town with an endowment for its preservation. It is now managed by the Castle Trust for a variety of open-air activities. Access to the castle is via the courtyard and café at Bigod’s Kitchen.
Bungay Castle
Following the Norman Conquest in 1066, the powerful Bigod family were granted lands and estates throughout Norfolk and Suffolk by the king. They made Bungay one of their main strongholds because it provided a good defensive position, a motte and bailey fortress having already been established during the Saxon occupation. Hugh Bigod inherited the family properties in 1120, and proved to be an ambitious and charismatic personality, uniting with local barons in challenging royal authority. King Stephen marched an army to Bungay in 1140 to quell Hugh’s military manoeuvres, but rather than punishment, Hugh was granted the title of Earl of Norfolk in return for obedience. Loyalty and submission were not Bigod characteristics, and he reacted by increasing attacks on royal properties, and building a powerful fortress in c. 1165 to cock a snook at authority. He met his match with Henry 11, a tougher leader than Stephen who prepared a military onslaught, to destroy the castle and topple Hugh from power. Forced to submit, he had all his estates confiscated and his title annulled. Although his castle was saved from destruction on payment of a huge fine, he was banished abroad to fight in the Crusades, thus terminating his career. His son Roger regained the estates, but his descendants gradually lost interest in occupying Bungay, and apart from a brief period of re-fortification in the 1290’s, developed Framlingham Castle as their
Bungay Museum

The Museum was established in 1963 and occupies two small rooms in the council office in Broad Street. The collections represent Bungay history through the centuries, commencing with a fine display of archaeology specimens, including Stone Age, Roman, and Saxon artefacts found locally. There is also a small section of geology, which features items found in local gravel-pits and on Outney Common. From the medieval period are objects found on the Castle site, including clay sherds, keys, and buckles. The coin collection covers the Roman to Victorian periods with good examples of 17th and 18th.c. Bungay trade tokens. A display case features books printed in the town by John Childs in the early 19th.c, and describes the development of the printing industry before and after it was taken over by Clays, of London, in 1877. Local authors, Sir Henry Rider Haggard, and his daughter Lilias, are represented, and the manuscripts of the books by Frederick Rolfe and George Baldry which Lilias edited for publication. Displays of Victorian memorabilia relate to the family of the wealthy Town Reeve, philanthropist, and diarist, John Barber Scott (1792- 1862)

Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum
Having opened in 1975, the Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum (N&SAM) has been a popular day out and tourist attraction for many years. Just a couple of miles west of Bungay you’ll find the village of Flixton. But, there are not many villages where you will be greeted by a fleet of aircraft! It’s not hard to find N&SAM there is a Gloster Javelin and De Havilland Sea Vixen parked on the front lawn! Of course, these are just two of the hundreds of exhibits, including over 60 aircraft and cockpits and a whole host related artefacts and memorabilia – over 30,000 items! This really is a fascinating place to visit, whether you have an interest in aviation
history or not. Best of all, it is completely free to enter – though donations are very welcome. Of course, here in East Anglia we have a great history when it comes to World War Two airfields, Norfolk and Suffolk were peppered with airbases and here at N&SAM you will find themed buildings displaying artefacts from the period. There is special attention paid to the 446th Bomber Group who were based at Flixton during in World War Two. In fact, 446 were the longest-term resident at Flixton airfield during the war. Naturally, there are plenty of RAF related items here too as well as the Royal Observer Corps. The museum is run largely by volunteers (there is a single paid member of staff) and the bulk of the maintenance and restoration work on the aircraft and exhibits is carried out by the team of dedicated and passionate volunteers. Over the course of the year N&SAM can expect to see around 40,000 visitors, many of which will be families and school groups and visits. It goes without saying that N&SAM is a big hit with the pupils on the school trips. The team here prepare exciting and

fascinating talks taking the children into a replica Anderson Shelter, flight simulators and even using an aircraft as a classroom! Hardly a surprise to learn that schools travel from across the region to make the most of this fantastic place. People are regularly donating items to the museum and are delighted when the volunteers here can bring it to life and explain what it is and how it would have been part of that person’s life. In a nutshell, that is what happens here. This is about human stories – bringing to life something from yesteryear and putting it into context. This is a fantastic place that has been running for over 40 years, thanks to the hard work and dedication of a small team of volunteers. With the themed NAAFI café on site, plenty of picnic benches outside and lots of easy parking, you really must come and discover N&SAM for yourself.

Waveney Valley Leisure Centre Waveney Valley Leisure Centre has an activity for everyone! Waveney Valley Leisure Centre is Bungay’s premier exercise venue and offers a wide range of activities for people who want to work up a sweat. The site is run by award-winning leisure operator Everyone Active, who took over the management of the facility in March 2021 and work in partnership with East Suffolk Council. A £3.4million refurbishment, completed in 2020, has breathed new life into the centre. The state-of-the-art, 50-station fitness suite was included in the refurbishment, while a new group cycling studio was added. The group fitness studio features a range of classes, including bodybalance, bodypump and sh’bam.
In addition, the 25m pool regularly hosts swimming lessons for all ages and the flume can be used during family swim sessions. It isn’t all about working out until you drop, of course. The sauna offers a great opportunity to relax after a workout and a well-earned drink and snacks can be enjoyed in the café. Everyone Active is on a mission to get

Waveney LEAF The Waveney Lived Experience Advisory Forum (LEAF), a service delivered by Access Community Trust, offers a safe space for people with lived experience of living with mental ill health, or as support to someone who does, to access a range local, opportunities both in person and online. Whether you have a diagnosed mental health condition, are experiencing changes to your emotional wellbeing, have experiences of the mental health system that you would like to share, or if you offer care and support to another, then we have something to offer you. The LEAF has three key focuses; the first is to provide opportunities for people with lived experience of mental health challenges, and their supportive others, to come together, share and connect and reduce feelings of isolation. We do this through our monthly forum in the forest days where we build a fire, cook together, explore nature connection and have a go at forest crafts and nature based mindfulness. In addition we offer regular online personal development workshops around self awareness, building self esteem and personal empowerment. The second focus is to ensure the voice of lived experience is heard and used to inform the development of service provision. We do this through our forum panel, held quarterly, which offers a platform for discussion and sharing of perspectives, insights and experiences which are shared both locally and nationally in the design and development of mental health services. The third focus is to work closely with local communities across Waveney to raise awareness of mental health, develop initiatives that support residents in accessing services and build resilience within those communities, so that people feel

understood and supported in their times of need. We run monthly drop ins in Bungay at The Recycled Weasel on the High Street on the 4th Monday of the month 1-3pm, and recently have delivered the Hearts and Mind Project across Bungay, Halesworth and Beccles. Bungay Hearts & Minds Bungay Hearts and Minds is project developed with the community, for the community. Twenty five residents from the town and surrounding villages, including business owners, local shop workers and town councillors, took part in a free, six week training programme designed and co facilitated with local people with lived experience of living with mental ill health. The course aimed to open up conversation about mental health in Bungay to help raise understanding, address stigma and encourage increased empathy across the community; to build the knowledge, skills and confidence around mental health of people in the community so they can help each other to get the right support; and for residents of and visitors to Bungay to have a better idea of where to turn if they need help with their mental health. Keep an eye out in windows of local shops and businesses for the hearts and minds logo, which shows that the staff there completed the course and offer a safe, inclusive environment that embraces the diversity of our community. To find out more, or to join us at any of the above then please email: beth.stephens@accessct.org call 07817313593 or visit: www.accessct.org/waveneyleaf

Fisher Theatre Following 18-months of Covid closures our local theatre is back with a bang! The Fisher Theatre offers a thrilling range of performances and events under the stewardship of new manger Ben Blyth. We caught up with Mr. Blyth to get the inside scoop and a sneak peak of what’s ahead at our historic theatre in 2022: Welcome to Bungay! Thanks so much – it’s such a pleasure to be here and join this wonderful community. It must be a relief to be open again after Covid closures? Absolutely, we’re delighted to be offering live events again. It feels like new life has been breathed into our beautiful theatre. We’re still being very careful of course, ensuring our auditorium is ventilated and sanitizing stations remain throughout. We want to make sure everyone feels safe coming back to the theatre in 2022. What do we have to look forward to this year at the theatre? We have performances every Wednesday-Saturday and in any one week there will be a wide range of things on offer. From plays and live music, to cinema and live-streams, jazz, drag, tribute bands, folk music, well-known speakers, family entertainment, our wonderful art gallery, and even live opera! And there are some exciting regular events too? Yes, indeed. I’m delighted that our monthly Comedy Club is going from strength-tostrength with TV-stars, circuit legends, and rising stars in the stand-up comedy scene coming to Bungay. Our monthly jazz club is thriving too, and new bi-monthly drag nights are proving really popular, uplifting our LGBTQ+ communities and offering a wonderful platform for emerging artists.
Fisher Theatre comes back to life with thrilling new programme! I heard you had a new summer repertory too? That’s right, for the first time ever we will host a repertory company in the summer, offering three fantastic plays over three weeks from 8-30 July 2022. This is a new venture for us and connects us with David Fisher’s original company that started our theatre back in 1828 – so we’re really excited about that! How do people find out what’s up next at the theatre? All our programming is available online at our website www.fishertheatre.org or you can always pop in to speak with one of our box office volunteers from 10am-3pm Monday-Saturday at the theatre.
