Many people visit coastal towns in the summer; that’s not surprising as strolling along a beach in the cold of a February morning would be madness. Right? Wrong! It can be highly exhilarating. In fact, there’s a lot more to our coastal town than the beach – albeit it’s a beautiful long sandy beach! Here are five things you can experience every season throughout the year...
A town for all seasons Summer
Spring
1. Enjoying time on the beach is an obvious top tip; however, don’t forget the beautiful surroundings of Southwold Common. Take a rug and a picnic and enjoy watching the clouds go by the water tower and out towards the sea.
1. Situated within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Southwold has a picturesque circular footpath that takes you around the marshes, harbour, common and beach. Starting at the Pier, you can follow the path into Reydon and take a quick trip over the bridge into Walberswick before heading back into town.
2. Sitting outside at the Red Lion is always a fantastic spot for people-watching. Located next to South Green and surrounded by beautiful architecture, this grade II listed building retains many traditional characteristics that make this a genuinely English pub inside and out!
2. Enjoy a brewery tour at the iconic Adnams Brewery right in the heart of Southwold. Celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, it’s a fun activity that allows you to tickle your tastebuds with some of their traditional, iconic and innovative drinks.
3. The Old Hall Southwold is located just outside Southwold and is a haven for parents and children alike. With an excellent children’s play area, a large maze created from maize (hence the name Maize Maze!) and a spacious outdoor eating area looking out over the River Blyth, this is a place to while away a morning, afternoon, or all day!
3. Take in the artistic pleasures of the art galleries and shops in town. Praising local and national arts, the likes of Buckenham Galleries or KIPPER Gallery offer unique pieces of art and design works.
4. Southwold Arts Festival is back after a two-year break following COVID. Launched in 2014 thanks to a creative conversation over a pint of Adnams in a Southwold pub! Today the festival is a vital part of Southwold’s summer events calendar offering a rich and diverse mix of music, talks, theatre, poetry and visual arts.
4. Visit one of Southwold’s museums and
enjoy a step back in time through the years. Southwold Museum is hidden around the corner on Victoria Street and has two floors of history to discover. The Amber Shop in Market Place has the only amber museum in the country - remember the original Jurassic World? The Amber Shop owner advised on this movie, ensuring that the film’s accuracy was on point.
5. Get personal and take the opportunity to receive expert styling advice that goes one step further than the usual clothes shopping experience. High-end stores Collen & Clare, Denny of Southwold and Mia Boutique offer personal stylist support to their customers. It’s a fantastic way to invest in a new summer wardrobe designed just for you.
5. Every summer, our sporting appreciation turns to tennis as Wimbledon always signals the start of the summer holidays. Southwold is lucky to have several tennis courts available to book for a game. Pit Stop Café has three courts and, like the name, offers snacks and drinks. Southwold’s Tennis Club on Hotson Road also has three courts. It provides tennis coaching to those that fancy themselves as the next Nadal! - 3 -

Winter
1. Card surfing... this is a fun activity that involves local shops that stock fun and quirky cards. Tasked with finding the most unique and funny card, you visit as many shops as possible before regrouping and voting on the winning card. Nothing better than roaring with laughter at funny cards with your friends. During lockdown, letter writing increased by 400% and sending a card through the post is a great way to tell someone that you are thinking of them. Local shops such as The Pug and the Pussycat, Lift Store and Chapmans of Southwold all have a fantastic array of cards to choose from, so go forth and enjoy card surfing.
Autumn
1. Golf or pitch and putt - it doesn’t matter the level of expertise; there is something for everyone. Southwold Putting Green, opposite Southwold Pier, is a fun family activity requiring no golfing expertise. A lovely intimate setting means anyone from grandparents to toddlers can have a go. Alternatively, Southwold Golf Club offers day access for those who fancy a longer game and want to enjoy a sensational view at the same time.
2. Hire some bikes and get your heart rate up by cycling around Southwold and across the Bailey Bridge into Walberswick village before heading back into town. Southwold Cycle Hire offers bikes for every age. Those with a competitive edge take part in Southwold Roubaix, which happens early each year and offers four different routes from 50km to a family-friendly 5km route.
2. For those who fancy a faster-paced activity, head to the Harbour for some adrenalin-fuelled boat rides with Coastal Voyager. Strap yourself in, embrace the watery elements and have fun shouting at the top of your voice as you crash through another wave!
3. Become a master of antiquity with a tour of the local antique and vintage shops scattered across the whole town from L’Authentique on Station Road to No.6 on Queen Street and everything in between, from Cornucopia and WOW Vintage.
3. Enjoy the literary delights of modern and classic culture with Way With Words. This week-long festival happens every year at Southwold Arts Centre. 4. Crabbing is a popular event throughout the summer, yet many forget the warm days of September. Take advantage of fewer crowds and more space by heading to Southwold harbour for some weekend crabbing.
4. Christmas Lights Switch On is always an exciting event. While it only happens once a year, there is great anticipation, and this year will be no different. With traditional carol singing, bell ringing and an appearance from Father Christmas himself, the whole town comes alive to celebrate the start of the festive season.
5. Another time to take advantage of minimal crowds is to come and take a walk along the beach. Stroll the length of the promenade, indulge in a warm hot chocolate from one of the beach kiosks and breathe in that fresh sea air. Take a return trip across Gun Hill and stop for some fish and chips before heading home.
5. There is something wonderfully quintessential about experiencing a full cream tea in an English coastal town when it’s cold outside. Squires of Southwold and Tiptree Tea Rooms offer delightful English Cream Tea, and both are located on the High Street. Head over to warm your tums after that refreshing walk along the beach!

Torta Caprese Recipe by LISA SCOTT from NINE DELI, Southwold www.ninedeli.co.uk
This is probably one of the most indulgent chocolate cakes ever, and whilst it certainly isn’t sin-free, it is gluten free and contains no flour. The recipe was given to me by my aunt who lives in the Lombardy region of Italy, although the cake is native to the island of Capri. It is one of our most popular cakes in Ninedeli, especially around Christmas time, Easter and Valentines. If you want a slightly larger cake, add half the quantity of each ingredient again to those listed.
Ingredients
• 125g ground almonds • 125g good quality, dark chocolate • 125g unsalted butter, softened • 3 free-range eggs, separated • 125g caster sugar • Grated peel of 1 large orange • A generous slug of Grand Marnier (or rum or brandy will do) • Icing sugar (to decorate)
Method
• Preheat oven to 180˚c. • Butter and line a 20cm round cake tin. • Melt the chocolate in a heat proof bowl over a bain-marie. Add the butter after removing from the heat and stir until it is melted. • Stir in the sugar and ground almonds. Allow to cool slightly and then add the egg yolks, stir. • Add in the orange zest and the Grand Marnier. • In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites until stiff. Fold them gently into the chocolate and almond batter mix until blended. • Turn into the prepared tin and bake in the middle of the oven for approximately 35-40 minutes until the cake feels firm and a skewer comes out reasonably clean (the cake will be very dense and moist anyway). • When cool, gently remove from the tin and decorate the top with dusted icing sugar through a paper doily to give it it’s characteristic pattern. • Delicious eaten on its own or with a dollop of clotted cream if you’re feeling extra naughty! • Will keep in an airtight tin for 3-4 days if uneaten for that long! Enjoy!

Guidance for dog walkers • Be aware of, and adhere to, restrictions limiting where dogs can go – particularly if it impacts local wildlife or livestock • Keep your dog close to you and under your control at all times • Use a lead when needed or requested • Prevent your dog from approaching cordoned areas • Always bag and bin your dog’s poo
Dog friendly Southwold
Whether you’re in Southwold for the day or visiting on holiday, if you’re a dog owner you’ll know how important it is to involve your four-legged friend in your plans. Luckily, this area offers plenty of dog friendly accommodation, outdoor activities and places to eat or rest weary legs and paws. Here are a few pit-stop suggestions where you and your pooch will be welcomed with open arms.
Beaches:
Dogs can dip their paws in the sea and run to their heart’s content on most of the beaches in Southwold and the surrounding area, however there are some seasonal restrictions in place on parts of more heavily populated beaches. Check www.eastsuffolk. gov.uk/environment/environmentalprotection/animals/dog-control/dogs-onbeaches for full details.
Eating out:
The Sail Loft – This chic cafe/restaurant is just across from the popular Denes beach and offers al fresco dining when the sun shines. The Harbour Inn – A spacious garden with views towards the common make this a great place to wet your whiskers. Two Magpies Bakery – This artisan bakery welcomes dogs but is on the cosy side, so is more suited to smaller breeds. Harbour Cafe, Blackshore – Stunning views of Southwold harbour, lots of outdoor seating and dog treats on the counter will get tails wagging.

sand dunes. On reaching either the Harbour Pier or the Lifeboat Station, depending on if you have taken the beach or road route, turn right at the campsite in a westerly direction along Blackshore Harbour. Please be aware that it is safer to keep your dog on a lead near the harbour due to fast moving tidal currents in the river (many dogs and their owners have had to be rescued by our lovely RNLI crew), and please also be mindful that Blackshore is still a busy working harbour. On reaching the Harbour Inn, you can either cut across the footpath in a northerly direction (signposted) over the saltmarshes towards Southwold common (may be flooded in the winter), or take the road uphill towards the water tower bringing you into York Road, heading in the right direction for the High Street again.
Mabel the Whippet’s favourite walks... The Commute
Mabel loves this walk from Reydon into Southwold. It’s a quiet walk, approximately 2 miles long and takes about 40 minutes. It can be quite muddy in the winter so wellies or good walking boots needed! A nice walk across the marshes giving the opportunity to spot a wide variety of migratory seabirds, and looking across to the foot of the town nestling along North Road. Start point: On the Lowestoft Road in Reydon at the foot of the hill just after the village hall, and exactly where the road forks (left to Covert Road, right to Lowestoft Road), take the unmade track to your right (marked footpath), proceeding in an easterly direction across the marshes for about a mile, known locally as “The Butts”. Keeping to the footpath, (please be mindful if you have dogs, there are livestock kept on the adjacent fields), you will eventually come to Easton Bavents and the seawall. Turning right in a southerly direction, walk down towards Southwold Pier. Following the promenade along (dogs need to be kept on a lead at all times on the prom) takes you into the heart of lovely Southwold.
Mabel the Happy Whippet loves beautiful Southwold and it’s surrounding areas and says please be considerate of other walkers, the environment, taking your rubbish home and pick up your poo after you!
Harbour Walk From Southwold town centre, this circular walk is also approximately 2 miles long and can take anything from 40 minutes to as long as you like, depending on whether Mabel wants to stop for some delicious harbour fish and chips at Mrs T’s or cold refreshments at The Harbour Inn! Start point: From Southwold Market Place, head in a southerly direction along Queen Street and then down to Ferry Road. The length of Ferry Road can either be taken on the footpath or along the adjacent beach and

tiny element of our usual weekly shop is achievable. And what’s more, we could build on that to include other positive actions. So, what other small changes could we make when shopping that both helps the environment and is realistically achievable? Here are five suggestions that you can make whilst enjoying the edible delights of Southwold. These ideas support local businesses at the same time as supporting Mother Earth against climate change.
5 simple ways to shop better for our environment Last year, the UK Government increased the single-use carrier bag charge from 5p to 10p. It extended it to cover all businesses in England, hoping that this will further reduce the use of single-use plastic by customers. Since the charge was introduced in 2015, single-use plastic bags have been cut by a massive 95% in major supermarkets. As customers, we have embraced reusing grocery shopping bags. Recent statistics show that the average household has gone from using 140 single-use plastic bags to just 4! Four!! What an incredible example of positive consumer action. A recent survey by charity WRAP revealed that almost three-quarters of the adults surveyed favoured the 10p charge. It means that consumers – us – are aware of the wide-ranging benefits of our positive actions on the environment and are happy to support it. What’s even better is the impact of changing just one small element of our usual weekly shop has global and local positive benefits. Along with the positive waste management aspects of a massive reduction in single-use plastic - less plastic floating in our oceans or going into the local landfill; the positive message is that changing a
1. Know what’s in season and buy that
There is a reason why almost every article about becoming a more sustainable shopper includes a point on buying seasonal produce. It works, and it is one of the easiest and most effective ways to support local farmers and businesses while reducing your carbon footprint. Little Gems, Southwold’s local greengrocers offer seasonal fruit and vegetables locally. At the same time, Duchies coffee shop only uses seasonal produce in their offerings.
2. Schedule your shopping
It’s referred to as the last mile problem - that last leg of any journey where the food moves from shop to home. How it gets home has a massive impact on how environmentally friendly your shopping is. From the good, you walk home or take public transport to the bad if you drive home in a gas-guzzling 4x4. One option is to incorporate your shopping trip into a pre-planned journey. For example, if you are planning a holiday in Southwold through Suffolk Secrets or Durrants Holiday Cottages, ask them to recommend some local shops that can arrange food packages ready to pick up en route to your holiday home.
3. Choose local, British food
Buying local produce helps support local businesses and farmers. It also means that the food is likely to be local and therefore reduces its impact on our environment. On top of that, you are more likely to hit point 1 as most locally sourced food is generally seasonal food too. Head to Mills and Son’s for locally sourced meat, Two Magpies Bakery for locally produced pastries and bread using local ingredients and Slate
- 22 -
Cheese for their exclusive collection of British cheeses. If you need a supermarket shop, choose the local Tesco’s or Co-Op as they employ local people and support local charities. As for the food, check its location; if it’s UK grown, buy that over something from aboard.
Here’s a list of Southwold businesses part of the local food waste scheme run by Sole Bay Waste & Recycling: • Café 51 • Harbour Café • Harris & James • Ninedeli • Old Hall Farm Cafe/Maize Maze • Pitstop Cafe • The Randolph Hotel • Two Magpies Bakery • Sail Loft • Southwold Golf Club • Southwold Pier • Sutherland House
4. Choose food with no packaging
Do you ever see bananas wrapped in plastic and think, “if only they had a protective skin that keeps the banana safe? Oh, hang on, they do!” Bananas don’t need to be wrapped in anything so choose not to buy them if they are - the same goes for avocados, oranges, lemons, and onions. The same goes for products with excessive packaging. It’s not necessary. And if it is packaged, make sure the item can be recycled or is biodegradable. Even better if recycled materials make the packaging itself. Most of Southwold’s coffee shops and restaurants use compostable packaging, such as ninedeli, Café 51 and Squires.
Making small changes to your shopping habits can significantly impact our planet.
Embrace habit-changing today. Thanks to Henry Collins, Head of Sustainability at Sole Bay Waste for contributing to this article
5. Recycle & waste less
In recent months, food waste has been a point of focus in Southwold, the question being how best to recycle rather than send it to a landfill. Unlike other countries, the UK remains without the option to separate food waste for consumers, meaning uneaten or unwanted food gets thrown away and tipped at landfill sites across the country. Food waste at landfills decomposes and produces methane, a more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide and is a significant contributor to global warming. Southwold’s local businesses are actively reducing their food waste. After separating it into designated bins, all food waste is transported to an Anaerobic Digestor (AD) Facility and used as a resource to produce biogas and natural fertilisers for the benefit of our society’s energy and agricultural needs. To give you an idea of how great this new initiative is, over 7 tonnes of food waste from local businesses has been diverted from landfills every two weeks. That is the equivalent weight of seven 1979 Volkswagen Beetles piled on top of each other!
This historic Golf Club was established in 1884 and is the second oldest in the County and one of just a few that retains its original Clubhouse. Set on Southwold Common with its panoramic sea views, it is a charming 9 hole course with 18 tee boxes offering a varied challenge throughout the year. Southwold Golf Club actively encourages juniors and adults to engage in this great sport and the Club PGA Professional, Dayne Hawkins, offers a range of lesson options. Be assured of a great welcome at Southwold Golf Club, whether just visiting for the day, or joining for the year.

Grilled east coast
Sea trout fillet
with Deben mussels, tarragon cream linguine pasta
Ingredients
• 1 small onion • 1 garlic clove, peeled and finely sliced • Good Suffolk rapeseed oil • 300g good dried linguine pasta • 24 live Deben mussels, tightly closed • 4 local sea trout fillets, skin-on • Sea salt • Black pepper • Dry white vermouth or white wine • 100ml good vegetable or shellfish stock • Approx. 75ml double cream • Few sprigs tarragon, shredded leaves only
Recipe by JONNY NICHOLSON chef-restaurateur from THE SAIL LOFT, Southwold www.sailloftsouthwold.uk
Method
• Warm up your dinner plates ready. Put a full kettle on to boil. • In a large lidded pan, fry the onion and garlic in a little oil until softened. Place the linguine into a separate large pan of oiled salted boiling water and time to cook to al dente over a hard simmer. • Add the vermouth and stock to the onion/garlic pan, boil strongly until reduced to a few tablespoons in volume. • Toss in the mussels, cover and turn to a low heat when simmering again. After a few minutes stir around, then cover again and cook for another minute or two. Check the mussels to see that all, apart from a few, have opened and remove from the heat. Discard any closed mussels. Strain the opened mussels and juices through a colander into a bowl. Place the mussels to one side and keep warm. • Put the juices back into the mussel saucepan, add in the cream, bring to a simmer. Check for a good sauce consistency and add in more cream if needed, before tasting and adjusting seasoning. Set to one side and keep warm. • Whilst heating up a frying pan or chargrill pan until very hot and slightly smoking, lightly oil and then season the sea trout fillets. Place in the pan skin-down and turn the pan down to medium-hot. • After a few minutes, carefully turn over the sea trout fillets with a fish slice and carry on cooking for another 3-5 minutes until cooked through fully and parts into flakes when pushed with the point of a knife. Remove to a hot plate and keep warm. • When ready, drain the pasta and toss with a little oil to keep separated. • Bring sauce back to a simmer; add in the tarragon and the pasta, tossing together with the de-shelled or shell-on mussels. Add a generous portion to the centre of your plate and top with the sea trout and serve.

Southwold Railway Trust
The Southwold Railway Heritage Train
and Saturdays. Membership is only £15 per year, and you can join on our website: www.southwoldrailway.co.uk The Station phone number is: 01502 725422.
The Southwold Railway Trust aims to restore the 9-mile narrow gauge Victorian branch line between Halesworth and Southwold. Closed in 1929, this iconic line thread its way along the Blyth Valley for fifty years, using balconyended coaches hauled by long-chimneyed steam locomotives. It was England’s premier three-foot-gauge line, and is sadly missed. Its restoration will not only revive an important part of Suffolk’s history, but will provide an alternative way for visitors to see the valley and access the coast. The Trust’s members own and have cleared land at Wenhaston station and in Blyth Road, Southwold where a one-acre site contains a miniature railway plus an engine shed and station with shop and café plus some three foot gauge track upon which to display and run the replica of ‘Blyth’ (one of the original 1879 steam locomotives) which the Trust has commissioned and will receive in early 2022. This site, called “Southwold Railway Steamworks”, is open to the public at certain times. There are other attractions: a 1913 Peckett steam locomotive, a Manx Railway Cleminson carriage and a Belgian tram carriage, all three foot gauge and being restored. The site is also a developing nature reserve. If you would like to join or be a volunteer, please contact us. We work on Wednesdays
This map was drawn by John Bennet to show all the main features of the railway and to place it in its setting within the Blyth Valley.

Fun filled fishing for all If you’re looking for a fun filled family day, then a few hours in the fresh air learning about the local area and learning to fish may be a great choice. The excitement of catching your first fish is something you’ll never forget and whether you are young or old it is something to tell your friends about! At The Fisherman and Friends in Southwold, there are four options to choose from: beachcasting and surf fishing at Southwold, bass fishing at the River Blyth, sea fishing on Southwold Pier, and last but not least coarse fishing at a local lake. Lessons last between three to four hours and are aimed at providing a fun educational experience. Sessions which prove to be most popular with youngsters and families are at the lake and Pier, but anglers of all abilities will find them just as rewarding. Contact The Fisherman and Friends on 01502 722085 or 07717 758935 for details and quote F&F/ Community.
