EDIBLE LANDSCAPES
HEALING HANDS OF HIGHLAND CO. By MEREDITH CREEK Contributing Writer
G
rowing up in Highland County, Judy Boris has spent her life taking care of area residents. Whether through direct care or teaching students, the 1982 Fairfield High School graduate has been serving in the medical field for more than two decades. Today, Boris owns and operates a new healthcare facility in Hillsboro, Acute Care and Family Practice at 1121 Northview Drive, which opened Dec. 27. The center treats a variety of health problems at a lower cost than some urgent care facilities, Boris said. “For people who don’t have insurance, our cost is $35,” she said. Also for patients without insurance, Boris said lab work can be completed through Acute Care and Family Practice at a savings of between 60 and 70 percent.

Ken Louderback is the latest winner of the "find the shopping bag" contest. He won a $50 gift card to Save A Lot. Look for another hidden bag in this week’s Shopper. Please note that bags that are on a Highland County Shopper logo – ones on the front page and in sales representative’s ads, for example – do not count. Last week’s bag was on Page 10.

SOCIAL
IS SPRING JUST AROUND THE CORNER?
Telltale burns prove smoker hasn’t cleaned up his act DEAR ABBY: "Dwayne," my boyfriend of eight years, insists on smoking in his bedroom. In our last apartment he'd fall asleep with a lit cigarette and ended up burning holes in our couch, numerous blankets and pillows as well as the carpet. When we moved, Dwayne assured me he had stopped, but a month ago I noticed his blanket and mattress have burn holes and so does the carpet by his bed. We live together with our 6year-old son and, needless to say, I'm scared to death Dwayne will burn this place down. I have talked to him about it numerous times. All he does is yell and say it won't happen because cigarettes are "safer now." I have discussed this with our landlord to no avail. I thought about calling social services, but I don't want to get him in trouble. I could really use some good advice. -- SCARED FOR MY LIFE IN MILWAUKEE
There are many reasons to incorporate edible plants into the residential landscape. The frigid winter temperatures lately have me worried about my perennials, shrubs and trees. I have some perennials that have not officially gone to “sleep” for the winter. A few of my Mums have even started to show green growth. A few days ago I discovered Boxelder bugs crawling on the patio doors. It certainly has been a strange winter so far. I have enjoyed sitting close to the woodstove these past chilly days, reading through the garden magazines and seed catalogs. I pulled some interesting information out of an issue of Birds and Blooms. Numbers in your backyard include: 25 – the number of different daffodil species. Within these species are at least 13,000 types of hybrids; 30 – the average number of years Koi fish live. Koi not only thrive in fresh water, they also tolerate cool temperatures; 3 – ways worms make healthy soil: They break down leaves and grass for plant food, they create natural fertilizer, and they form drainage systems by bur-
rowing in the ground; 43,000,000 – the number of U.S. households that plan to grow their own food this year, although higher grocery prices are a factor, the majority say they just want better-tasting food; 6 – if a carrot is planted in 40degree soil, it takes 50 days to sprout, and if it’s in 70degree soil, it takes only 6 days; and finally, $6,000,000,000 – the amount spent by Americans annually on lawn care! Last week I attended a seminar presented by the Warren County Master Gardener Volunteers. Sue Trusty (www.thetrustygardener.com) spoke to the group about edibles in the home landscape. Edible landscaping offers an alternative to conventional residential landscapes that are designed solely for ornamental purposes. Edible landscapes can be just as attractive, yet produce fruits and vegetables for home use. One can install an entirely edible landscape, or incorporate simple elements into existing yards and gardens. Sue Trusty explained that her slogan is,
“Eat your lawn instead of mowing it!” Edible landscapes combine fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, vegetables, herbs, edible flowers and ornamental plants into aesthetically pleasing designs. There are many reasons to incorporate edible plants into the residential landscape. These include: • To enjoy the freshness and flavor of home-grown, fully ripened fruits and vegetables. • To control the quantity and kind of pesticides and herbicides used on the foods you consume. • To increase the food security of your household. • To save on grocery bills • To grow unusual varieties not available in stores. • To get outside, interact with the natural world and have fun. Trusty shared some valuable tips for landscaping with edibles that including; Start with a lay-out, consider the visual impact, incorporate texture and color, reconsider using rows, add some height, think about the harvest,
include all-season structures and include herbs. The possibilities for edible landscaping are endless. By incorporating just oneor many- edible plants into a home landscape, you can develop a new relationship with your yard and the food you eat. Want to learn more about Edibles in the home landscape? Check out Fact Sheet HYG-1255-02 (ohioline.ag.ohio-state.edu.), or read “The Complete Book of Edible Landscaping” written by Rosalind Creasy. This book started the edible landscaping revival. Interested in learning how to start seeds for your garden? Plan to attend the free informational seminar, Starting Seeds, being presented by Brown County Master Gardeners on Feb. 23 at the Fincastle campus of Southern State College. Seminars are held in the library, 6-7:30 p.m. It won’t be long before we can plant those “cold loving” vegetables! — submitted by Faye Mahaffey, OSU Extension Brown County Master Gardener Volunteer

Acute Care: continued from Page 1 The center is a goal realized for Boris after she obtained an associate degree in nursing from Southern State Community College, as well as a bachelor’s degree in nursing and two master’s degrees, all from Wright State University, to become a clinical nurse specialist and a certified nurse practitioner. Following her undergraduate studies, Boris worked in obstetrics at Clinton Memorial Hospital for a few years and then began teaching at SSCC while pursuing her first master’s degree. In 1993, she took a position teaching nursing at WSU. “I continued working as a nurse at CMH to keep up my clinical skills,” Boris said. After completing her second masters program, Boris took a position with Drs. Dirk Juschka and David Gunderman at Hillsboro Health Center. Several years later, she resigned, but still wanted to work with patients in Hillsboro. “My heart has always been in Hillsboro with my patients,” she said. “Last year I did urgent care in Washington C.H. and I realized how many people don’t have insurance. I knew Highland County had the same issue.” Therefore, Boris opened the doors of Acute Care and Family Practice to offer a lower-cost medical resource to Highland County residents. She treats an array of acute health concerns, including ear infections, colds and pneumonia, as well as chronic conditions such as diabetes and high cholesterol. In addition, the center provides routine physicals for sports and jobs, and urgent care for wounds and suturing. Currently, Acute Care and Family Practice cannot provide schedule two drugs which consist of pain medications and stimu-
lants like those used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. “Probably the most frustrating is not being able to provide ADHD medications because I’m not being as much help as I could be,” Boris said. It is federal legislation, however, that Boris said prohibits her and other certified nurse practitioners from being able to provide those medications. But Boris said there is new legislation being looked at right now in relation to the issue and that she remains an activist for her field. Acute Care is open to clients seven days per week. Hours are 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Boris also has assistance from Michelle Thompson, a nurse practitioner who is familiar with treating the needs of Highland County residents. Thompson worked at Highland District Hospital for 12 years as a registered nurse, worked on an asneeded basis in the emergency room at Adena Greenfield Area Medical Center and has been working in an after-hours family practice since 2009. If there are conditions Boris or Thompson are not equipped to handle, Boris said they make appropriate referrals to help patients get the care they need. When not at the office, Boris said she enjoys spending time with her family. She is married to David Boris and together they have four children and two grandchildren. Boris coaches her granddaughter’s soccer team for the SAY Soccer Organization and attends her grandson’s sporting events. Individuals in need of health services can contact Acute Care and Family Practice at 937-4024735 or acutecarefamilypractice@gmail.com.

The more creative you are in your personal and professional life, the more interest you will gather. Bring old ideas back to life with a fresh new twist. Opportunity will be yours if you reconnect with people with whom you have worked in the past. Favors will be granted, and momentum will build. Your numbers are 5, 11, 14, 20, 24, 32, 48. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Call in favors, talk to influential people and use your appeal and insight to attract the help you need to accomplish your goals. Love is on the rise, and participating in something that interests you will expand your popularity and friendships. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Choose carefully. Too much of anything will work against you. Separate what's necessary from what's inconsequential. Make a point without making a scene and you will achieve greater interest from people who can make a difference. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Not everyone will be honest with you. Ask direct questions, especially if it has to do with your reputation or your position. Charm will help you uncover what you need to know. Don't show anger when compassion and understanding are what's required. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Impulse will be the enemy. Think outside the box and patiently incorporate your thoughts into your plans. It's better to be safe than sorry, especially when others will be affected by your decision. Improvements at home can be expected. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Discuss your plans and you'll find out information that will help you move along faster. Someone unique will interest you in ways that can alter your way of life. Travel plans will enhance your love life and your emotional well-being. Own up to any mistake you've made and move on before you waste time or miss a better opportunity. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You can make personal changes that will boost your confidence and help you see your options. A unique opportunity will lead to love and romance. Don't sit at home when you should be out engaging in social activity. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Put more time and effort into your surroundings and your personal relationships. A stable home environment will help you be more productive professionally. A new way of doing things will open up opportunities you never knew existed. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Keep your thoughts to yourself. As soon as you voice your opinion, you can expect to raise eyebrows as well as opposition. An argument will not help your cause, but it will waste your time. Focus on home, family and self-improvement. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Dig deep into your past to find the answer you are looking for. Reconnecting with old
friends or colleagues will raise your interest in something you haven't considered previously. Don't let love hold you back or cost you. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Emotions must be controlled if you want to come across as reliable and stable. Not everyone will have your vision, but if you present a finished product or offer a well-thought-out service, you will be successful.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Put pressure on anyone holding you back. You must keep the momentum flowing if you are going to reach your goals. Your intuition will help guide you in the right direction. Being secretive and honest simultaneously will lead to success. BIRTHDAY BABY: You are visionary, progressive and individualistic. You are complex and shrewd.

Medical Update by Dr. Clark And Associates
2255663
ORAL CANCER CHECK In light of the fact that more than 34,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer annually, it is a good thing that dentists regularly perform exams to detect cancers of the mouth. Such exams are very important since early detection leads to treatment, which leads to better outcomes. When oral cancer is detected in its earliest stages, the five-year survival rate is 80 percent to 90 percent. However, if oral cancer is left undetected for as little as a few months, the survival rate after five years drops to 55 percent. As with any disease, the best approach is prevention. All forms of tobacco products damage the DNA of cells in the mouth. Other risk factors include heavy alcohol consumption.
Our entire staff at CLARK FAMILY DENTISTRY encourages your questions about comprehensive dental care. We supply superior oral health care for the entire family. For answers to your oral health issue questions we invite you to call our office at 937.393.3494. Your health is our first priority. We are pleased to provide you with state-of-theart dental care at 624 S. High Street, Hillsboro. Our goal is to make each visit to our office a comfortable and positive experience. New patients are always welcome P.S. Alcohol consumption also compounds the risk of developing oral cancer posed by tobacco because a compound in alcohol (aldehyde) increases the absorptions of cancer-causing substances in tobacco. 2238365
