ocated in the old McClain building on Jefferson Street in Greenfield across from the courthouse is C.A.R.E. Chiropractic, the office of Dr. Eric Borsini. Borsini came to Greenfield in 2004 opening his practice at its current location that same year. He said extensive work had to be done on the building but that he wanted to keep true to its original design and to provide a "friendly, welcoming atmosphere." Borsini hails from the Boston area of Massachusetts and says that he did not really give this career path a thought until he suffered a lower back injury in 1990. He said he struggled with this injury for some time and did not find real relief until visiting a chiropractor. That chiropractor is Dr. Candace Maddalo.

VETERAN GARDENERS AND TOMATOES Squash, cabbage, potatoes, sweet corn, tomatoes, green beans, oregano, sunflowers, and onions are growing by leaps and bounds in the raised beds at the Ohio Veterans Home in Georgetown, Ohio. I arrived early on our work day so that I could weed and spread mulch before the temperatures soared to the 90s. When I arrived Fred Panetta and Tony Figliola were already outside checking their gardens. Fred has thinned out the foliage on his tomatoes and Tony pointed out some nice green tomatoes in his raised bed garden. Art Puckett has green beans ready to pick. Paul Mitchell has harvested some cabbage. Randall Patton’s sunflowers are enormous and blooming! The hot weather kept most of the Veteran Gardeners inside that day, but it was evident that they work diligently in the cooler mornings pulling weeds and giving their gardens a good drink of water. My tomatoes are full of blooms and I’m keeping careful watch over several green tomatoes. I have been watering the plants every other day (at the base) and keep hoping for a rain that lasts all night. A few of my tomato plants have laterals/side shoots/suckers which might need to be pruned off to minimize competition with the main stem so that tomato fruit can get bigger and sweeter. Remember that suckers are the new growth that appears in the leaf axile between the stem and a leaf. How do we know which tomato plants should be pruned? There are three main types of tomatoes based on their growth habit. They are determinate, semi-determinate and indeterminate. Determinate tomatoes are relatively small, bushy and compact. Many of the earliest tomatoes are determinate types. Some examples of the determinate type are Early Girl and Super Red. On the other hand, indeterminate types are large and produce tomatoes all season long. They also produce a lot of suckers. Common examples of this type of growth habit include Big Beef and Big Boy. Semideterminate types are in between the determinate and indeterminate types.

The Associated Press

All tomato plants can grow perfectly without any pruning as long as they are supported with stakes or cages. They produce fewer suckers than indeterminate types. Common examples of semi-determinate types are Celebrity and Mountain Pride. All tomato plants can grow perfectly without any pruning as long as they are supported with stakes or cages. If gardeners do choose to prune, there are a few guidelines. Only prune indeterminate and semi-determinate types. Be sure to check the tomato labels! With indeterminate types, leave 2-3 suckers at the base of the plant and remove the remaining suckers. Suckers should be removed when they are about 3-4 inches long. With semi-determinate types, wait until the plants are 8-10 inches tall. Remove all suckers below the first flower cluster, except the one immediately below the flower cluster. No pruning needs to be done with the determinate types. This information was provided by The Buckeye Yard and Garden Line. There are several informative Fact Sheets about tomatoes available on ohioline.osu.edu. Growing Tomatoes in the Home Garden (Fact Sheet HYG1624-10) provides information about choosing tomato cultivars, planting,

staking or caging, watering, tomato diseases and some of the insects that can cause damage to your tomatoes. Gardeners need to be watching the leaves of their tomato plants. Many of the leaf spot diseases mimic each other in their early stages of development. To prepare for “battle” you might want to look up the following OSU Extension Fact Sheets: “Early Blight of Potato and Tomato”, “Late Blight of Potato and Tomato”, Septoria Leaf Spot of Tomato” and “Bacterial Leaf Spot, Speck and Canker of Tomato”. I have already started to pull my favorite fresh tomato recipes. I can’t wait to pick that first ripe tomato! I love to graze among the different tomato cages consuming the sun-warmed fruits of my labor. A quote from Lewis Grizzard sums it up for me -“It’s difficult to think anything but pleasant thoughts while eating a home grown tomato.” Here’s hoping for a long and bountiful tomato season! — Submitted by Faye Mahaffey, OSUE Brown County Master Gardener Volunteer

Dinner guest grows weary of catering to her hostess DEAR ABBY: Some friends of ours entertain often, and ask certain guests to bring dishes for as many as 15 to 18 people. This has evolved to the point that I am often left a message telling me to come up with a specific dish. Because I am a good cook, the dishes they request can be quite elaborate. Last week, two of the eight couples invited were asked to bring a dish for dinner. As I was unwrapping mine, the hostess told me to mix it together with the other one, which had been bought at the supermarket! She seemed put out with me when I replied that I had spent many hours preparing my dish and would rather not combine them. Abby, four years of this is enough for me. In the future when I'm invited, I'll accept and say that I'll contribute some wine. Period. Please don't advise that we refuse invitations from this family -- they are my husband's oldest friends, and our husbands do business together. By the way, this couple is very wealthy. They could afford to cater all of these gatherings. -- NOT THE HIRED HELP DEAR NOT THE HIRED HELP: Take wine and offer no apologies. If it was good enough for the Last Supper, it should be good enough for your friends.

D EAR AB BY Abigail Van Buren have mixed emotions. I love Libby very much and would never do anything to hurt her, but I truly want to be a part of Connie's and Libby's lives. It's going to be hard for me to sit home while everyone else is enjoying the celebration. Please give me your view. -- LEFT OUT IN LITTLE ROCK DEAR LEFT OUT: The last thing you should do is sit home and brood. Make plans with friends for those two days and keep yourself occupied. You are neither "Cinderfella" nor an outcast, and I'm sure Connie feels as bad as you that you'll be absent from the festivities. Connie is sacrificing her personal preference to ensure that her daughter's wedding goes as smoothly as possible. She knows what kind of a scene her ex-husband is capable of. Please support her and do not take this personally.

DEAR ABBY: My girlfriend, "Connie," and I have been together for 13 months. I have been divorced a year and a half. Connie's divorce became final six months ago, but she and her husband were separated for more than a year. Connie's daughter, "Libby," is being married later this year. She's a wonderful girl, and I wish she were my daughter. I wish her the best. My problem is, I will not be attending the rehearsal dinner, the wedding or the reception. Connie says that if I were to show up, her ex would make a scene and ruin the day for Libby. He hasn't gotten on with his life, and Connie wants Libby's day to be special. I understand that, but I

DEAR ABBY: Please settle a long-standing family dispute. Is the spider that climbed up the waterspout itsy-bitsy or eensy-weensy? -- WEBBED IN COLUMBIA, MD.

Health and Wellness center. In here, too, Borsini has kept with the original aspects of the building by replicating the design of the original high ceilings and refinishing the creaky wood floor. A long expanse of the original brick is also exposed highlighting the age and antiquity of both buildings. He said he originally opened the Gossett side of his practice as a space to hold health lectures. While it is still a place just for that it has also evolved into a place for physical activity as well. The back part of the space holds elliptical machines, treadmills and bikes, and hydraulic weight machines for Woman's Circuit training. In the front areas mirrored walls reflect those using the facilities for Zumba classes, NRG (a highintensity, high-energy total body program) classes, and various dance classes. Often a patient will be questioned about their diet with Borsini offering advice on the effects. A regular patient always gets "Dr. Borsini's lecture" about things like what is contained in a bottle of soda and other nasty bits of information. All is offered as a way for the patient to become aware that what they do throughout the day, what they put in their body, has a very real and lasting effect on their over-all health. Borsini said he saw his patients respond better to treatment when he provided them with the "building blocks to be well." Along with chiropractic services, natural supplements, and health and wellness classes, and as part of Borsini's commitment to over-all well being, two massage therapists are available for appointments throughout the week. Of his advice, the services, the supplements, and the awareness provided Borsini said, "I wanted to do something more." To schedule an appointment or for more information call 937-981-9000.

DEAR WEBBED: If the dispute is long-standing, then it is not eensy-weensy. However, the spider that climbed up the waterspout was itsy-bitsy, at least that's the way I learned it. ——— Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. continued from Page 1 Borsini said she told him that she thought he would make a great chiropractor and she took him under her wing, even applying him to Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa before he even knew it. He attributes Maddalo to showing him the ropes. "I had the training of many good physicians," said Borsini. He added that over his 15 years of being a chiropractor he has "learned that chiropractic alone is not enough, that nutrition is important too for optimum health." Optimum health of his patients, and an excellent quality of care is what Borsini strives for in his practice. He had worked in larger cities but said the offices were too fastpaced adding that his practice in Greenfield has allowed him to give the kind of quality care he struggled to do in the larger offices. There is a sign hanging on the receptionists desk in the lobby directed towards waiting patients that reads, "The nature of our practice is to give our patients the utmost in care and service. Please excuse any delays. We will give you the same careful attention as soon as possible!" Behind the receptionist's desk, sit old, glass-paned apothecary cabinets that are original to the property. In these cabinets Borsini stocks his organic supplements supply from Standard Process, a supply he says he has a hard time keeping as they have become a popular purchase with his patients. Another set of these cabinets are also in Borsini's treatment room. And above one of them on the plaster wall is a framed scrawling left behind in 1949 by a previous tenant of the building. Borsini, in recent years, has purchased part of the Gossett building that is just next door. This is now the

ASTROLOGY MONDAY, JULY 9, 2012 CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Fred Savage, 36; Courtney Love, 48; Tom Hanks, 56; Chris Cooper, 61. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Don't worry about change. Sometimes force is what's needed to progress. Think outside the box and be creative in your pursuits. A new direction will help you expand your mind and realize your potential. Look at your accomplishments and you will find a way to build a brighter future. Your numbers are 6, 17, 22, 28, 32, 36, 42. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Embrace a challenge and show everyone how skilled you are. Good fortune will surface through conversations with people who work in the same industry as you. A one-on-one connection you make will lead to a long-lasting relationship. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Compromise will be needed in family matters. Concentrate on picking up information and deciphering what will work best for you in terms of personal and professional advancement. Don't let someone from your past disrupt a personal relationship. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Take on only what you know you can handle. Spreading yourself too thin will be your downfall. Baby steps and a strict budget should get you what you need to achieve your goals. Don't let jealousy lead to costly mistakes. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Beautify your surroundings, inside and out. Do something unique that will complement a relationship that means a lot to you. Develop a creative skill you can use to separate you from any competition you come up against professionally. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Don't give up or give in. Make whatever alterations are required to get what you want. Your ability to adapt will make a good impression on someone looking for services you have to offer. Romance is highlighted and will improve your love life. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Do whatever needs to be done and keep moving. Avoid criticism or getting into discussions that will slow you down or cause you grief. Problems with someone you care about will surface if one of you displays overindulgence. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Don't believe everything you hear. Rely on intuition and intelligence to guide you when dealing with emotional matters. Focus on looking your best and taking advantage of opportunities that will enable you to advance. Love is in the stars. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Don't lend or borrow money or possessions. The personal changes you make to the way you live or do things will pay off. Good fortune will result from meeting someone well-connected in an industry in which you can offer your services. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Concentrate on money, contracts and legal matters. A partnership with someone who can contribute equally to a project you want to pursue will change the dynamics of your proposal and up the ante financially. Progressive action will bring results. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Protect your assets, your ideas and your job. Avoid discussions that cannot play out in your favor. Be ready to coun-

ter any changes made that can disrupt your plans or ruin your reputation. Avoid unorthodox dealings or methods of cutting corners. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Do whatever it takes to advance mentally, financially and personally. The changes you make at home will enhance your love life and help you deal with anyone who has been a poor influence on you.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Don't be too quick to judge others, or you may be judged harshly in return. Concentrate on self-betterment and you can avoid criticism and setbacks concerning friends, relatives and your way of life. A hobby will help ease your stress. BIRTHDAY BABY: You have plenty of energy and enthusiasm. You are versatile and charming.

Our entire staff at CLARK FAMILY DENTISTRY encourages your questions about comprehensive dental care. We supply superior oral health care for the entire family. For answers to your oral health issue questions we invite you to call our office at 937.393.3494.

Parents may want to take note of the fact that they can pass along cavity-causing bacteria to their babies. This information is provided in the interest of raising awareness, not causing alarm. What many people do not know is that Streptococcus mutans is a bacterium that can be transferred by saliva when utensils are shared and even when parents kiss their babies. It's important to note that only parents and caregivers with active tooth decay can spread Streptococcus mutans bacteria when saliva is transferred. Beyond that, tooth decay develops as a result of a combination of factors, including genetics, oral hygiene, and exposure to sugary liquids. Good oral health on the part of parents helps minimize the bacteria-transfer factor.

Your health is our first priority. We are pleased to provide you with state-of-the-art dental care at 624 S. High Street, Hillsboro. Our goal is to make each visit to our office a comfortable and positive experience. New patients are always welcome. P.S. Babies are particularly vulnerable to tooth decay during the time of tooth eruption, when their tooth enamel is relatively soft. 2293074
