CHILD CARE MEETS EDUCATION By MEREDITH CREEK OCM News Service

roviding a unique and state-recognized learning experience for children of all ages, the Southern State Community College Patri-Tots Learning Center has been a part of Highland County since the early 1990s. Formerly known at the SSCC Child Care Center, the Patri-Tots center is located on Hobart Drive next to the college and is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. offering a variety of educational lessons and experiences full-time, year-round. According to Hillsboro site administrator Kathe Chaney, the SSCC Child Care Center was established by a group of forwardthinking community members and college personnel who readily identified the need for child care and cleverly tied that need to that of the college's early childhood education program.

Rocky Fork Thunder hydroplane races ■ Boat races to

resume at RFL By MEREDITH CREEK The Times-Gazette This summer, Highland County will again be home for the popular Rocky Fork Thunder hydroplane boat races following a one-year hiatus. Thousands will enter the Rocky Fork Lake region Sept. 15-16 where the sound of boat engines will drown out every day noises. Admission is free, pit passes are $10 and VIP tickets are also available. Food vendors will be on site to feed hungry spectators and a flea market and craft market will provide a variety of items for purchase. To assist individuals in the enjoyment of the races, the Rocky Fork Thunder Racing Association and Inboard Hydroplane Racing recommend that those coming out wear close-toed shoes and bring such things as umbrellas and sun screen to protect from the sun, folding chairs on which to sit, and clothing layers in the event of varying weather throughout the course of the event. Optional items can include one softsided bag or cooler that is easy to carry, a camera to capture the racing excitement, binoculars to view the cold and hot pits, and books, magazines, card, or headsets to provide personal entertainment between race heats.

No alcoholic beverages are permitted to be brought in or taken out of the lake area during the boat races and no glass containers, roller blades, skateboards, firearms, fireworks, or items restricted by local, state or federal laws will be allowed. With its vast lake and its beaches, boat docks, and campsites, there is rarely a lack of adventure for visitors. To help continue drawing crowds, businesses in the Rocky Fork region are making an effort to make the area more appealing. Tim Rosselott, owner of the wellknown Beechwood Road Carryout and Pizza, said his latest endeavor was adding canvas covering to the deck area of his business so individuals can still enjoy the environment during rainy weather. But not only can people stop out at the establishment for a meal, they can also place orders for delivery and carry out. Some of those meal options include deep-fried mushrooms, dill pickles and egg rolls, cheese sticks, chicken wings, burgers, and of course pizza. Rosselott said delivery is possible all around the lake and into Hillsboro. Those interested in placing an order at Beechwood Road Carryout and Pizza can call 937-393-4353. "All are in good shape and just needed some updating. They have new paint, floors, and brand new beds," Amy Warren said. "Some have new fixtures and all have new water heaters, as well as flat screen televisions, cable, and we

have free WiFi in the campground." Warren said the cottages also feature stand-up showers, standard kitchens with a stove, microwave and refrigerator, and outdoor grills. She said the kitchens, however, are not full stocked with kitchen supplies. Family-size cabins are available with a dishwasher, washer and dryer. "Kathleen's pet project is a kind suite with a king-size bed, wood floors, linens... It's designed just for two people and could be a honeymoon cabin," Warren said. Warren added that reservations are encouraged to assure cottage availabili-

Warren said the store contains speciality bass lines, tournament supplies, and hunting gear among other items. "We're open from sunrise to sunset, so when it's light earlier, we open earlier," Warren said. This adds convenience for hunters and fishermen. Taxidermy by George is also located on site for those who wish to preserve pets, fish, and wild game. Warren said one of the goals the Bayview staff has is to encourage the revamping of the Rocky Fork region. She said many locations have not received much attention and that the lake area has often been given a "bad wrap." "We want to try to change the attitude.
