We’ve been catching up with Essex wedding professionals to find out what it’s been like to run their business during the pandemic. Clive of Special Moments Celebrant has been supporting his couples throughout postponements, cancellations and reorganising. “There have been many tears as the stress of this prolonged uncertainty has taken its toll,” Clive says. “My role is to ensure that plans are adapted so that the couple can still look forward to celebrating their love in a way that reflects them. Twenty years of experience has equipped me with the expertise to ensure that even if the wedding isn’t what was originally planned, that it’s still a magical experience – even if Zoom is necessary!” With many couples opting for a small official ceremony followed by a second ‘sequel’ wedding after restrictions have lifted, Clive can make sure the second wedding is truly special. “I can create a unique event where the only limit is your imagination,” he says. “With the backlog of ceremonies developing, a celebrant-led wedding can happen at any time and place, giving you more flexibility.” Head to www.specialmomentscelebrant.co.uk

During this time of restrictions and lockdowns, Layer Marney Tower has hosted a few very special intimate weddings, and while it had fewer visitors, it was the perfect opportunity for works to take place. The venue was lucky enough to receive a Cultural Recovery Fund Grant, and the money has been put to work renovating the large Medieval Essex Barn, which runs along one side of the Courtyard. Over winter, the uneven floor has been dug up, insulation has been laid and sandwiched between two layers of limecrete is underfloor heating, with a top layer of York stone. The leaky roof and walls are being insulated and tiled, while making sure it loses none of its rustic charm. Although not completed yet, work should be finished in time for the venue’s planned reopening to general visitors on Wednesday 19th May. Couples can look forward to Layer Marney Tower’s Evening Wedding Fayre on Thursday 10th June, when they’ll be able to see this wonderful new space. aura and Tony’s dads were school friends and ended up running a judo club together in East London. While there were plenty of photos of Laura and Tony together as children, it wasn’t until a judo club reunion when they were adults that something started to blossom. “We saw each other a couple of times after that, one of which was Tony’s dad’s surprise birthday party,” Laura says. “I nearly didn’t go because my hair wouldn’t go right, but after a stern talking to from my dad I got ready and went. Tony and I talked for most of the evening, and three weeks later I had practically moved in with him!” Tony had planned to pop the question in Las Vegas, but sadly Laura’s dad was very ill so the holiday got cancelled. Instead, he hatched a plan to do it on a day out in London, convincing Laura that a break from hospital visits would do her good. “After a drink in Covent Garden, we walked to the restaurant he had booked, Clos Maggiore,” Laura remembers. “We were sat in a corner upstairs without much space – not the grand room he had imagined we’d be sitting in. Tony started fidgeting in his seat, fumbled in his back pocket, pulled out a ring and asked me to marry him. This was quickly followed by him saying, ‘I can’t get on one knee, there’s not enough room!’ to which I cracked up laughing, and of course, said ‘Yes.’” A couple of weeks later, the happy couple went to Hatton Garden where they had Laura’s ring made, as Tony had proposed with a back-up ring. “After picking it up, we went to The Shard to celebrate and he dropped to one knee and proposed again!” Laura smiles. We caught up with the bride to find out how they planned their dream day at Old Brook Barn on 24th August, 2019.

SETTING THE SCENE Laura and Tony tied the knot at St James and St John, Havering-atte-Bower, before heading to the beautiful Old Brook Barn for their post-vow celebrations. “We wanted somewhere with history,” Laura tells us. “We loved the vintage, rustic feel.” They chose a quintessentially English theme to bring their wedding to life, a vintage fun fair, and they accented it all with a navy and blush palette. “Being avid DIYers and with my previous career being a prop and set-builder, we knew that a lot of our day would be bespoke and handmade by us,” Laura explains. The day was brimming with personal touches. They placed a fishing box by the river with a light shining in the water in memory of Laura’s dad, as well as using dried flowers from his funeral as confetti. The floral arrangements were made from gorgeous faux blooms, while the rustic vibe was seen through the log slices, the vintage suitcase table plan and the cake. The pair travelled in style in a white Beauford, while guests enjoyed being transported in a vintage bus.

REAL WEDDINGS AISLE STYLE Laura looked stunning in her timeless gown. “I don’t do lace, and I knew I wanted a simple, classic dress,” she says. “I accessorised it with a belt, hairslide and simple jewellery, while my hair and make-up artist made me feel like a model!” The bride treated herself to four pairs of shoes on the day: aisle shoes, day shoes, flip flops and trainers! The men and the bridesmaids complemented the theme perfectly. “The boys wore navy suits and navy ties, while Tony stood out with pink accessories,” Laura says. “They looked great alongside my best girls in blush pink dresses with lace sleeves.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE For the reception, the couple pulled out all the stops by building their very own vintage fun fair. “We had lots of games, from a coconut shy and hook-the-duck to a ring toss and tug-of-war,” Laura says. “It worked brilliantly, with everyone competing, mingling and having a great time.” The party got started in the evening with singer Fil Straughan, which was followed by a DJ and bongo player in the evening to get the crowd on the dancefloor.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS So how did the loved-up newlyweds feel on the day? “We felt amazing and so very lucky,” Laura says. “We have some incredible memories, including my brother walking me down the aisle and seeing Tony with tears in his eyes. The balloon release we did for my dad was a moment of stillness, which was lovely. We also had lots of amazing speeches from our nearest and dearest.” There were also tales of the tug-of-war rope being used as a skipping rope. “My sister-in-law thought she was 14 again and tried skipping – she broke her ankle!” Laura laughs.

imone and Jonathan’s story began when they both swiped right on Tinder, while living in London. “Our first date was at the Founders Arms on the Thames,” Simone tells us. “It was a hot August evening and we instantly clicked over G&Ts!” When it came to popping the question, Jonathan managed to keep it a complete surprise. “Jon proposed on holiday in Mexico,” Simone says. “All my family were there to celebrate my 30th and my dad’s 60th – or so I thought! Jon’s sister even flew out from France to be with us.” The pair started planning their dream wedding at That Amazing Place. However, their plans for a 100-strong guestlist were scuppered by the pandemic, and they were left having to change their date with 24-hours’ notice. “We had to reduce numbers to just 30 people, then again down to 15,” Simone explains. “This meant we had no bridesmaids, less groomsmen and missing relatives from abroad.” The pair took it all in their stride, and had the most beautifully intimate day on 3rd November, 2020. Simone tells us how they did it… 45

my and Chris knew each other through mutual friends for years, but it was only when Amy came back from her second year at university that they caught each other’s eye. “I started working behind the bar at our local rugby club where Chris played,” Amy remembers. “He offered to walk me home one night after my shift – and that was it! We didn’t stop laughing, and ten years later we’re still laughing!” Chris took Amy by surprise when he popped the question on

an autumnal day out in London. Amy says, “Being a bit non-traditional, we worked together with a family friend who is a jeweller to design my engagement ring. Chris surprised me once again by wanting to incorporate a diamond from a pair of his late-grandma’s earrings.” The couple set the date for 12th September, 2020, and while this was during the pandemic, they had actually planned to have a smaller wedding all along. Amy tells us all about it… 51 51

We chose Galvin Green Man for our post-vow celebrations. We’ve been there a number of times and the team are so friendly and accommodating – plus the food is amazing! We couldn’t think of anywhere better to spend our day.

We had a small ceremony at the Essex Records Office in Chelmsford, which was enough for us as the most important part of the day was spending time with our nearest and dearest.

I chose a beautiful bouquet of dried florals and a coordinating flower crown – I love that we can keep them forever as a memento. We have a talented friend who does floristry, so she created our rustic centrepieces with lanterns, foliage and blush pink and white blooms.

Another talented friend of ours runs a cake company. She worked with our florist to incorporate the flowers into our beautifully rustic naked cake design

We embraced the times with COVID-safe favours. There were hand sanitisers and face masks saying “Spread love not germs.”

I wore a Ted Baker dress. I chose this style because it was laid-back but still bridal, as well as being suitable for dinner at the restaurant On the day, we felt really relaxed and excited; it was so much fun. A highlight was spending quality time with my parents and siblings

We chose V-Dub Rides for our big-day transport. We felt like we truly arrived in style – so many people were taking photos!

When searching for my own wedding dress I felt that everything was a bit dated and uninspiring, and the service was flat – which is the opposite of how you should feel when shopping for your wedding dress! I was working as a wedding and events manager at a local venue when an ex-colleague contacted me asking if I would like to buy her Bridal Reloved franchise as she was selling for personal reasons. My partner had been looking for an investment – and who better to invest in? Four months later I was the owner! Why should brides choose to get their dress from a local boutique? Although part of a franchise, we operate separately and personalise our boutiques. I have excellent contacts and can personally recommend local suppliers and venues. My Maldon High Street shop is easily accessible and we offer the services of a local seamstress for those all-important alterations. What’s your top tip for brides looking for their dream dress? Wear comfortable underwear when shopping. Tights are useful if you get hot as it helps the dresses slip on easily.

What are the best summer colours for bridesmaids’ dresses? For a traditional wedding, we recommend choosing soft, blush shades, such as geranium pink and rosewood or soft lilac for cooler tones. The natural world is in full bloom in summer, and keeping your palette soft will complement that rather than compete for attention. For something more unusual, you might consider a light sage green; it looks incredible against peach, tangerine, warm red and yellow. This is one to consider if your flowers are warm and bright. How can brides choose the right tones for their make-up in the summer? A natural, dewy finish for make-up is very popular and gives a healthy glow; this can be achieved using a touch of illuminator, which comes in cool or warm tones. A colour analysis session will help identify your tones, and the right colours will look natural and enhance your skin tone. If in doubt, choose a true red lipstick, which is neither warm or cool. Shoot organiser Samantha of The Vintage Iron Company, a prop and decor hire specialist, wanted to evoke a sense of free-spirited romance. “When creating a pampas arch, layers are key for a full and fluffy look,” Samantha says. “We used peacock chairs and dressed them with neutral florals for a vintage feel. Q: There are so many different wedding styles out there – how do we narrow it down and find what’s right for us? The first rule of thumb is to find your venue. This is always a good first step towards choosing the feel of your day as well as your palette. For example, if your reception room has a prominent colour, you’ll need to work with it rather than against it. Tones for yourself and the bridal party are next. Once you have chosen your outfit and your bridesmaids’ dresses, you will find that these will guide you into a colour theme. From there, the flowers and decor will fall into place. Q: We’d love a marquee or tipi wedding but it seems like there’s a lot of planning involved. What do we need to consider? While it can seem daunting, tipi and marquee weddings are exciting because they give you a totally blank canvas. Many marquee suppliers will be able to help with the big elements of your day, starting with guest numbers, which will determine the size of your structure, and what vibe you want. Then, look at fundamentals such as electricity supply, toilet hire and bar services. Next, plan what areas you would like in your marquee or tipi. Perhaps you want a chill-out space, tables for guests to have a sit down, then the dancefloor and bar area. Once you have these nailed, along with your guest numbers, it’s fairly easy to create a floor plan. Remember, with more modern structures, like tipis and sailcloth tents, a lot of the atmosphere is created by the structure itself, so don’t feel under pressure to add lots of decor – unless you want to! You’ll also need to consider the location, and you’ll need access to it for at least two to three days as big marquees take most of that to put up and down. Most suppliers can help source the location or have preferred venue partners, or you can find your own space and connect the dots afterwards.

Q: We’re having a colourful summer wedding. What florals do you recommend for this? Summer is the best time to embrace bright and beautiful flowers. You could consider a tropical design filled with anthurium, ginger flowers, orchids and protea all finished with palm leaves and monstera. This would create a vibrant palette of hot pink, coral, peach and white. For the more rustic couples, it has to be sunflowers – the bigger, the brighter, the better! A cluster of these yellow giants softened with gypsophila and gorgeous grey-silver eucalyptus is all you need. For late-summer weddings, it has to be the quirky dahlia. With so many colours and styles, they give the ultimate wow factor all by themselves. The colour trend for 2022 is orange and peach, and I can’t wait to get stuck in.
