Christmas Day 2020 feels like only yesterday, when my fellow bridesmaid, Olivia, and I bombarded Melissa with WhatsApp messages: “Has he done it yet? Has he done it yet?” We knew the proposal was imminent you see, and were more than just a tad excited! Boy, have we had an adventure together since: the tears of joy at being asked to be bridesmaids (“Are you sure you want me?”), the fun of shopping for the dresses, and the hilarity of the hen dos (yes plural, she deserves it). The past year-and-a-half has seen us grow closer as friends, not just Melissa, Olivia and I – the three amigos; but also with our gorgeous fellow bridesmaid Nolwenn and the groom, dear Dave. Weddings have a habit of doing that don’t they? Of course, they’re a celebration of love between the all-important couple, but more than that, they allow a much wider expression of love for friends, family and even fur-babies! After all, that’s why we’re all here isn’t it? I know it’s why I spend my days writing about your amazing big days and why I never tire of looking at the resulting photographs. To quote a hero of mine, RuPaul: “Everybody say love.” I hope you enjoy the oodles of inspiration this issue has to offer. We’ve got two gorgeous styled shoots packed with ideas from the region’s finest wedding suppliers, as well as three incredible real weddings. Plus, there’s plenty of guidance on finishing your look with jewellery and accessories as well as on keeping your guests entertained

I love a boho vibe and am a big fan of this modern twist on the much-loved theme. For me, there’s something of the Duchess of Cambridge about it. It’ll be a proud moment for whoever walks you down the aisle. The love you share means it’ll be emotional and memorable too.

The ceremony is the most important part of the day, so why shouldn’t it be as much fun as the ensuing celebrations? Turn to Hot Topic where Jen the Celebrant tells us more.

Those who are choosing a twilight wedding tend to skip the formal wedding breakfast and go straight on to their evening reception and with Matilda also noticing a trend in Thursday weddings, the stage is set for the wedding party to continue into the weekend.

THE TWILIGHT ZONE

COME ON IN! Rookery Bridal in Axbridge has launched a new exciting concept: Boutique Tasters and Take a Look Thursdays. The store opened up on the evening of 23rd June for its first Boutique Taster event, where brides could enjoy a glass of prosecco and a nibble or two while browsing the beautiful collection. It proved to be a great opportunity for those overwhelmed by the idea of dress shopping for the first time to do so in a relaxed manner, while chatting to the experts who were happy to offer as much advice as they could. Some of the boutique’s recommended suppliers were also invited along, so there was even more to see alongside the dresses, bridesmaids’ attire, veils andAsaccessories.youmightimagine, the event proved to be a resounding success, so Take a Look Thursdays were born. Every Thursday from 3pm to 7.30pm, you’re invited along to meet the team without the need for an appointment and have a mooch around their lovely boutique. If you like what you see, but don’t already have an appointment, you’ll be able to make one, but there’s no pressure.

More and more couples from across the South West are choosing to tie the knot in the evening, moving away from the more traditional early afternoon nuptials. The Twilight Wedding, as it has become known, is now growing in popularity at venues such as Cadbury House in Congresbury, which has been working hard to ensure it can cater for this increase in dusk ceremonies.

With several rooms licensed to hold both civil marriage ceremonies and commitment ceremonies there are many options for couples to choose from and those yearning for al fresco “I dos” could consider the thatched gazebo, complete with panoramic views reaching across the North Somerset countryside and Bristol Channel.

https://boombattlebar.com/uk/bath

The boutique’s Sarah Hackett says, “We’re often asked by brides if they can just pop in to see us without an appointment, so Take a Look Thursdays have been created to allow us to tell them to come and take a look.”Once a month more suppliers will be asked to join in, so keep an eye on social media to find out when these special events will take place – @RookeryBridal or @rookerybridal. Also, check out https://rookerybridal.co.uk

Matilda Burgess, wedding coordinator at Cadbury House says, “There’s been a steady increase in this new phenomenon over the past 12 months and it’s certainly something we can see continuing to grow in “Cadburypopularity.House faces west and is renowned for its stunning views and contemporary boutique style, so opting to say ‘I do’ with the sun setting in the distance makes for a spectacular occasion.”

CEREMONY TO CELEBRATIONS

The Mornington Suite is a stunning space overlooking the finishing straight. It’s light and airy with a private balcony and high ceilings. Based in its own private building it’s ideal for an intimate ceremony with 80 of your nearest and dearest. It can also host 50 for the wedding breakfast.

THE CELEBRATIONS Sunrise ceremonies are followed by a champagne breakfast in the grand Pump Room restaurant for 60 nearest and dearest. The Pump Room is Grade I listed and was a social hub for Georgian society, famously frequented by Jane Austen. It’s an elegant space boasting tall windows, Corinthian columns and a glittering chandelier.

Sunrise ceremonies take place at 8.30am, while sunset ceremonies are held at 7.30pm.

After your sunset ceremony on the other hand, you’ll enjoy drinks beside the Great Bath with further celebrations on the Terrace (overlooking the Great Bath) and Reception Hall for 40 to 160 guests. Alternatively, you may hire the whole venue including Pump Room, Reception Hall and Terrace with capacity of 290. Evening hire isn’t available from mid-June to the end of August.

Situated at the heart of the World Heritage site, the Roman Baths & Pump Room is without doubt one of the most distinctive buildings in the country. The award-winning complex is steeped in history, with its origins dating back 2,000 years. A non-weather dependent venue, it’s open to the elements, yet suitable for weddings as shelter is provided by the soffits of the terrace above. There are further undercover areas such as the East Baths and plunge pool, which form part of the museum by day.

THE “I DOS” The hot baths, which yield around 1,200,000 litres of water daily at a constant 46˚C are surrounded by the original ancient paving. It’s here that ceremonies take place either in the morning or evening, overlooked by the beautiful Bath Abbey. What could be more magical than exchanging your vows before sipping champagne on 2,000-year-old paving with flaming torches reflected in the thermal waters? You can choose to have no guests at all for a special elopement experience, but there are airy rooms available in which to entertain loved ones.

COME AWAYwith me Heather and Chris’ venue styling reflected their love of travel Images courtesy of Wildly In Love 26

Heather and Chris’ paths initially crossed through work. Once through a course they both attended and again two years later on the refresher. It was third time lucky though when they encountered each other once more on Guernsey where they were setting up a new retail store for the company they both worked for. During the short time Heather was there, they bantered as they strolled down to the shop, met for food and drinks in the evening and later went clubbing, where Chris treated her to his best dance moves. Heather had to leave the following day, while Chris needed to stay on another four weeks. But during that time they continued to message and call each other. When his time on the island was up Heather picked him up from Bristol airport and they shared their first official date at a Harvester. Chris lived in Somerset, while Heather’s home was in Cheltenham so it took time and effort to keep in touch, but a few short weeks later the couple decided to move in together. “That’s when our time together truly began, and the rest is history,” Heather says. Chris proposed in Tunisia while on holiday with their friends. On a romantic evening stroll after dinner one night, the couple arrived at an area of the beach illuminated by candles laid out in the shape of a heart. Here, Chris got down on one knee and asked Heather to marry him. She remembers, “I immediately said, ‘yes of course.’ He then told me he’d asked my dad for his blessing before we came away on holiday, which made me even more emotional as this was really important to me.

The date was set for a gorgeous springtime wedding on 21st April, 2022. Read on as the bride tells us all about it...

SETTING THE SCENE

The couple, along with various family members, had a great time in the run up to the wedding emptying various whisky and rum bottles to use as centrepieces. These were filled with eucalyptus and topped with a blue dinner candle, each was surrounded with more eucalyptus provided by their florist. Dusky blue table runners also adorned each table as did the wedding favours. Each guest was gifted a scratch card with handmade card overlay, which read, “for richer for poorer,” and had a penny stuck to it for luck. The floral arrangements contained glorious blue, ivory and white blooms including roses, with eucalyptus to give them some volume. Jars of flowers ran along each side of the aisle, which were then moved to the wedding breakfast tables and the remainder scattered around the room.

The table plan consisted of one large photo frame with lots of little ones inside it. Some held the lists of guests on each table while others contained photographs from the places the pair had been on holiday together. Table names were Guernsey (where they officially met), Italy, Cuba, Morocco, Florida and of course, Tunisia. The bride folded a paper aeroplane for each of their guests to reflect their love of travel and wrote the place names on each one. A further reflection of the travel theme appeared in the shape of a vintage suitcase used for guests to pop their cards and gifts into. They also chose a guest book that contained little envelopes and cards for each loved one to write their best wishes on. “We also bought an instant camera so people could pop their photo into the envelope as well. I’m a massive lover of photography, so it was important to me to include some other form of it as well as our professional photographer.”

and Chris knew Hestercombe House and Gardens was the place they wanted to exchange their vows as soon as they laid eyes on the beautiful Orangery there. “It’s breathtaking! Simple, but breathtaking,” Heather explains. “The grounds at Hestercombe are stunning with so many different areas to enjoy, including the gardens, which have featured on Gardeners World,” she continues.

I then found out that Chris and our friends had been in talks with the hotel manager the whole time, arranging this perfect proposal. They’d set up a gazebo on the beach and brought out a bottle of prosecco for us to Heatherenjoy.”

REAL WEDDINGS 29

Chris loves VW Campervans, so as a surprise Heather hired one to arrive at the lodges they were staying at to take him and his groomsmen to the venue before returning to pick her up with her bridesmaids and her parents.

In the evening everyone enjoyed bacon baps, which the bride is a massive fan of.

The bride wore Suri, a fit-and-flare gown by Morilee with spaghetti straps and a gorgeous floral lace fabric. When Cherry Blossom Bridal closed down during the pandemic, she decided to return to another of the boutiques she’d visited while shopping for her dress, 14 and Sixpence in Taunton. “The owner was so lovely, I decided it would be amazing to get my veil from her. I chose a fingertip-length single-layer veil with some lace in a similar pattern to my dress,” Heather explains.

Chris looked dapper in a blue three-piece suit. He teamed this with a crisp white shirt and an ivory gold tie and pocket square with gold leaf detail to stand out from his groomsmen. His buttonhole had a sprig of Heather in it as a symbol of his bride. The four groomsmen wore the same suit as Chris with similar ties, which were of a more simple design. The beautiful bridesmaids wore gorgeous dusky blue floorlength dresses with floaty cap sleeves.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS Heather remembers, “The part I enjoyed the most was turning the corner and coming down the steps towards the orangery to see Chris waiting for me at the end of the aisle with a lot of emotion. I was convinced he’d remain straight-faced and not cry, but seeing him so happy and emotional made me love him even more.” The same moment was also a highlight for Chris: “As I saw Heather come down the steps in the orangery, I thought to myself, ‘This is the most beautiful and amazing woman I could ask for to call my

Finally, Heather and Chris leave us with their top tip: “Enjoy every minute of the day, and stay sober so you can remember it all!”

The couple opted for a DJ for the evening entertainment. “He was great as we were able to submit a full playlist of songs to play that evening,” Heather explains. Chris is a huge music lover and spent the two years leading up to the wedding creating this playlist. On the wedding invitations the couple also invited guests to suggest a song they’d like played. The DJ was also open to any request, which went down well with the assembled nearest andThedearest.gardens too were able to provide their own entertainment as folks could enjoy a stroll around them in the fine weather before the evening revelries kicked off in earnest.

Hestercombe provided all of the food for the day and the duo opted for a carved buffet as their wedding breakfast. This was followed by a chocolate orange fondant. “Chris loves Terry’s Chocolate Orange, so this was a no brainer!” Heather explains.

Revealing my dress to dad was incredibly special, as was seeing Tom standing at the end of the aisle. Tom wore a blue three-piece suit, while the groomsmen and dads wore the matching two-piece version. They paired these with a pink tie and pocket square. I accessorised simply with a necklace that belonged to Tom’s mother and someearrings that I found to match. I also wore Bluebellshoes from Dune. I waslucky to get them as Tom managed to order the last pair in my size once I’d fallenin love with them. My dress was by Art Couture and I loved the detail on it – lots of bits sparkled and caught the light. I teamed the gown with a veil, which had detail around the edges.

33 REAL WEDDINGS

We’d been planning our wedding for years, and after having to postpone, we were both so ready to get married! We both felt happy all day – on a wedding high. And it was lovely to celebrate with those closest to us. The bridesmaids wore long, multi-way, dusky pink dresses.

34

We included a frame to remember relatives who couldn’t be there. We put this in the snug alongside a basket of spa slippers so guests could change out of their heels ready for the dancefloor. The basket of blankets went down well too as it was very chilly! We kept our centrepieces quite simple as the venue is so beautiful, we felt it didn’t need too much. We had a vase holding a candle surrounded by a flower wreath on each table. Our flowers were all silk. The bridesmaids flower rings were our favourite pieces. Tom’s mum finished my bouquet so that it was a surprise on the day.

Our wedding cake consisted of three tiers of fruit, chocolate and lemon. There was also one fake tier with ivory icing and some greenery decoration.

Our wedding favours were bottles of homemade sloe gin. My family have been making it for years so it was very personal to us. Our table plan was made from an upcycled frame, which we painted and stuckflowers on to. We used hessian to back it and fit with our rustic theme.

For Tom, seeing me in my dress for the first time was the highlight. We both lovedour first dance too, as well as being able to include our daughter in it.

We had a very intimate wedding with around 65 guests, predominantly family. Due to Covid, this was the first time many had seen each other in a good while, so it was really special. Everyone was able to catch up and have a good time on the dancefloor with the DJ in the evening. We had a menu- and wine-tasting evening at Berwick Lodge, which was lots of fun. We opted for pork belly to start, beef featherblade for main and sticky toffee pudding for afters (Tom’s favourite). In the evening, we had pulled pork burgers, with a tower of cheese accompanied by crackers and chutney.

Sophie and Jimmy met at university in Preston and started dating soon after. Sophie knew she was on to a winner, when Jimmy treated her to a home-cooked meal of Hunter’s Chicken on one of their first dates.

The couple agreed on three essential criteria when looking for a venue: it needed to have accommodation, be dog friendly and have an outdoor ceremony licence. Having viewed a handful of venues, Holbrook Manor emerged as the perfect fit. “It has a relaxed atmosphere and we felt we could make ourselves at home there, but it was also grand enough to suit the occasion. The staff were very friendly, supportive and relaxed, letting us explore every nook and cranny each visit,” Sophie explains.

Sophie and Jimmy’s wedding styling was inspired by the roses that grow in their garden

Jimmy planned a heartfelt proposal at the National Trust gardens at Stourhead – a place they’d visited many times and adore. However, by her own admission, Sophie isn’t a lover of surprises and point-blank refused to go. “I’m a stubborn being and didn’t fancy a walk that day,” she remembers. So, thinking on his feet, Jimmy decided to propose in their back garden. Not quite Stourhead, but since Sophie couldn’t be persuaded to leave the house, their own version of it would have to do! Perseverance paid off for him though and he surprised Sophie by popping the question. This was back in 2017 and they opted for a long engagement to save for the wedding of their dreams.

“I could barely cook a meal and still can’t really!” she explains. The two soon became inseparable and after a year as a couple, they decided to move in together. “We found that our values aligned and it felt very natural to share our lives,” Sophie says.

REAL WEDDINGS 39

We hired a violinist to play during ceremonythe and drinks reception.

As a bride, walking down the aisle is more overwhelming than I anticipated. I’m not used to walking into a room and having every single pair of eyes on me!

The groom wore the Marc Darcy Ted Tan Check tailored three-piece suit. His groomsmen wore the same jacket and waistcoat but with sand-coloured chinos, allowing Jimmy to stand out. My maid-of-honour wore a peach floor-length gown, while the flowergirls wore dresses representing each colour in the palette – pink, lemon, peach and ivory. I wore an Essence of Australia gown (D3066) in rum. I love the modern take on lace and with the contrasting colour layer beneath it really popped so you could see its intricacies. I love a fitted silhouette and the dramatic long, detailed train clinched it for me. I paired the dress with a cathedral-length veil and pearl crown.

We opted for a blend of tall and short table decorations and hired charger plates, chair drapes, linens, candles and our table plan sign.

Mum and I made scented candles as wedding favours and personalised them by adding the names of each guest, which meant they doubled as place names.

Our colour palette reflected the roses we grow in our garden – baby pink, peach and soft lemon. I asked our florist, Louise, to design our floral arrangements with an English county garden feel in mind. She achieved this with David Austin roses, scabious, and dahlias amongst other flowers and foliage.

WE LOVE to boogie20 ideas for keeping your wedding guests entertained

“We’re often asked if we can set up outside, which works well in good weather. We’ll always need a wet weather backup space too, but having the two options means we can be wherever the majority of your guests are, ensuring the booth gets maximum use. While this might not be possible with all venues and suppliers it pays to plan ahead to ensure your entertainment is located in the perfect place on the day, minus the last-minute stress.”

What could be better to entertain wedding guests on a balmy summer’s day than a selection of garden games? Whatever your style there’s a band out there for you. Experienced musicians are adept at judging the vibe on the dancefloor, making sure they keep those dancing feet busy all night. Many will learn that special first dance song for you at your request and some offer super-flexible options to bring you suitable entertainment from low key drinks reception music to fullscale floor-fillers in the evening. Shot in Bath, home of Netflix’s much-loved series, these images show how to pull off a modernday Bridgerton vibe for your wedding Images courtesy of SAY Photographic Photographer Sarah Travers-Clark from SAY Photographic became hooked on the popular Netflix show Bridgerton after she walked past the crew, filming just down the road from her home. “I often wondered how the series would feel in a modern-day Bath, and already liked how elements of our own era had been subtly added,” she says. It all really started to come together with ideas becoming a reality when Krystle Brides procured a gorgeous Maggie Sottero dress for the shoot. Sarah continues, “From there, the modern Bridgerton-vibe flowed with more and more suppliers coming on board. I’m passionate about my home town and I’ve long wanted to showcase just how much of a wonderfully creative place Bath is. And since we’re literally in the real-life film set it’d be rude not to pay homage to our beloved Bridgerton!”

We don’t want our ceremony to be the boring part of our wedding that everyone must sit through in order to get to the party! How can we make it as exciting and fun-filled as the rest of the day to reflect our personalities?

As soon as you’ve found your dream dress, book your bridal seamstress. I can be booked up to a year in advance. Your wedding gown is likely to be one of the most important dresses you’ll ever wear, so whether you need a little tweak or a complete remake, you’ll want it to fit beautifully and feel comfortable on your special day.

LIFE OF THE PARTY

Suzie Marie, https://suziemarie.co.uk

Please could you explain the process for having a wedding dress altered? I’m not too sure of the timings or what to expect.

Just think of the love invested in writing your own wedding vows that are personal and special to you as a couple.

Traditional, modern, funny, quirky – the power is all yours. You’ll have the most amazing memories and so will everyone else.

THE PERFECT FIT

It’s really important to bring the underwear and shoes you’ll be wearing on the wedding day to every fitting in order to obtain the proper fit. Then, once all adjustments have been finished, a final fitting will be booked. This is often a good time to bring along your best friend or family member who’ll be helping you to get dressed on the day. I can show them how best to do this, as most dresses have a variety of hooks, poppers, zips and ribbons. I always press and steam gowns before collection, making sure everything is perfect.

www.freyasteelephotography.com

Fittings are usually booked two or sometimes three months in advance, in the run up to your wedding, depending on the type of adjustments or style changes you need. I chat through all the details with you and we work out the best fitting schedule at our first meeting. Expect to have three or more fittings and remember: how your gown fits is unique to you, so extra appointments may be needed.

HOT TOPIC

The simple answer is to opt for a celebrant-led ceremony! They’ll work with you to make every aspect of your ceremony reflective of you and your partner’s personalities, so it’ll be bespoke and all about your love story. Every time a celebrant officiates it will be unique, different from the last one they did. Unlike a registrar, who must repeat the same script. With a celebrant-led wedding, the party starts with the ceremony, and so it should! There are no limits to what you can do, say or even where you have to hold it. You can bin the rules, or better still, rewrite them. If you want to go down the aisle on a motorbike, do it. You can include quotes from your favourite films, incorporate your family and heritage traditions, involve your pooch, have a karaoke sing-song, the sky’s the limit. Why not stop halfway through and have a toast to your wonderful guests?

54www.freyasteelephotography.com

Explaining confusing marriage rules is one of our favourite things! Outdoor weddings have always been allowed at licensed venues. The old rules stated that this had to happen under a permanent approved structure though, such as a bandstand or gazebo. Since April 2022, legal changes mean that ceremonies can take place outside anywhere in the grounds of a licensed venue, whether it’s in a pagoda, a temporary marquee or in the open air. Registrars just have to make sure the location is accessible, safe and suitable for the ceremony.

Communication is key and if you have an idea of what you want in mind, talk it through with your videographer. Make sure they have the capability to produce it and film it to the quality you

EXPERT ADVICE

I’m finding that planning my wedding alongside working full time and looking after my family is taking its toll. A friend suggested I hire a wedding planner, but I’m not sure what to expect, I don’t want to relinquish full control. Can you tell me more about the process?

Most wedding planners will offer you a free no-obligation meeting, as I do, so that you can have a chat about how involved you want them to be. When I sit down with my couples, I discuss their wish list, budget, date, how they met, the proposal and much more. But, if you’d rather carry on planning the wedding yourself, you may want to just consider hiring someone to manage the big day only. This is a service I offer, whereby I look after everything on the wedding day, allowing you to focus on the occasion without any of the stress. I can even help to plan the hen, stag or family gathering if you’dPlanninglike. and managing a wedding can be stressful, so let a professional lend a hand and you can breathe and enjoy your special day.

Samantha Smart, www.weddingregency.com

Amber Packer-Hughes, www.somersetweddingservice.org.uk

The options are enormous, which is fantastic news for all you lovely couples who want to say your vows surrounded by nature. The main thing that hasn’t changed is that the venue must be licensed for ceremonies, so it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to marry in your own garden, at the beach or on Glastonbury Tor. Indeed, you might discover your dream venue with the perfect garden, field or woodland and find it isn’t licensed. If so, just ask the owner if they’d consider it and get them to contact their local registration service. It can all be put in place in just a few weeks.

LETTER OF THE LAW

Hereexpect.atWeathered Oak, I can produce anything from visual and special effects, to atmospheric music and movie magic with you as the star, meaning you’ll want to watch your video over and over again. I also happen to be a mega film buff, so it’s a certainty I’ll be just as excited about any themed project as you!

OurALWAYSwedding will have a Wizarding World theme, how can we bring the magic to our wedding video? Since you’ve opted for a themed wedding, I assume you already have trinkets, props, decorations and collectables to dress your venue. These are also crucial elements to add that sparkle and realism to your video. Props that can also be actively used in the film to add an additional layer of interest, as long as you’re up for a few theatrics! Things like magic wands and costumes will all ensure those special memories of the day are captured forever and elevate your wedding from muggle to magical!

STEP 5 WHICH METAL? This is arguably the most crucial decision as it will affect everything from the cost to the longevity of your rings, as well as the obvious look. The hardest wearing precious metal is platinum, which holds polish a lot longer than white gold. Alternatively, 18ct gold is best if you prefer the yellow tone.

Your wedding rings are the ultimate symbol of your love and commitment to one another, so why not personalise them as much as possible? While all of the above will do that for you, you can go one step further by having them engraved with a meaningful phrase, your initials and wedding date or even your finger prints.

“Anything goes, so go with your heart.” – Charlotte Gray, www.ecowoodrings.com

STEP 4 WHAT’S YOUR STYLE?

58

DID YOU KNOW?

4mm oak bentwood ring inlaid with sand, mother of pearl, yellow gold shavings, finished with a silver ammonite, www.ecowoodrings.com

3mm Eco Wood Ring with maple, yellow gold, lavender, sapphire, mother of pearl and lapis lazuli, www.ecowoodrings.com

Be sure to wear your engagement ring when you’re shopping for the wedding bands as it will influence your choice. You’ll likely want to match the metal and even the shape, stones and depth. This is doubly important if you want your wedding band to be shaped around the design of your engagement ring. Many jewellers offer ready-shaped options to fit alongside standard diamond cuts such as marquise and pear, but you can always go down the custom-made route if none of them work.

STEP 1 BUDGET

STEP 2 KNOW YOUR RING SIZE

Much like the rest of your wedding planning you need to mutually agree on what you want to spend on your wedding rings, bearing in mind this is something you’ll be wearing 24/7 for the rest of your lives. Considering the hardiness of the metal you choose for example is important. More on that later! There’ll be something out there to suit whatever your budget though.

Once upon a time wedding rings were by and large simple gold bands, but nowadays the options are incredibly varied. On a basic level there’s eternity (where stones go all the way around), half eternity (where they cover half the band) or plain of course; then there’s matte or polished... we could go on. Also, have a think about whether you want your rings to match, complement each other or be completely different.

Charlotte Gray at Eco Wood Rings (www.ecowoodrings.com) says, “Your ring can tell a story, capture a moment in time and be a beautiful reflection of what really matters to you. To our custom-made rings you can add inlaid materials from special places or treasured possessions, from Haribo to vinyl with all the sand, seeds, shells and stardust in between!”

It’s important to get this right before you order as not all rings can be easily resized without a major overhaul of the design. Your jeweller will take your measurements properly, but if you’d like to get an idea for yourself there are plenty of measuring guides online.

Traditionally, the wedding ring goes onto the third finger of your left hand first, so that it’s the closest one to your heart. The engagement ring will be next followed by any eternity rings you’re lucky enough to receive for future anniversaries!

It’s finally here, my last bride’s diary entry before I become a married woman! When we first got engaged nearly 18 months ago, the wedding seemed so far away that it almost didn’t feel real, and yet here we are about to walk down the aisle. The last few weeks of planning have been a bit manic with all of our suppliers getting in touch asking for lastminute details, and although it can feel a little overwhelming, it’s also really exciting! This issue is all about my dress alterations, hair and make-up trial and keeping positive as the big day approaches...

FITS LIKE A GLOVE I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t incredibly nervous for my first dress fitting. I purchased my gown over a year ago, and I’ve gone through phases during that time where I’ve loved it and also doubted it. It was a size too big when I bought it, so looking back at the pictures it was hard to imagine what it would look like fitting properly. I think my main worry was ‘what if it doesn’t look like I imagined or even worse, what if the seamstress makes it too small or too short!?’

As someone who has only worn make-up once for prom night many years ago, I was unsure of what I wanted when it came to my bridal make-up. Make-up is not my forte and, much to my friends’ amusement, I can’t tell you the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer – and that’s just for starters! For this reason, I chose a hair stylist and make-up artist with great reviews, who are familiar with my venue and whole-heartedly put my trust in them. During my trial, she sat me down and asked what I wanted, and I was honest and said ‘no idea’. She laughed and reassured me that I’m not the only woman in the world who doesn’t wear make-up (even though it feels like it sometimes). She went for a very natural look and talked me through the process. Even though my make-up looked great and was very subtle, it was still a shock to see myself with it on. It took me the whole day to get used to it, but I was really pleased with the result, and felt like a princess.Whenit comes to hair (you’ll be pleased to hear I’m not as clueless), I had a rough idea of what style I wanted but was torn between a half up and half down look or an up do. My hair stylist was wonderful! She created both looks for me, took loads of pictures and made sure I was happy with both styles. After a lot of deliberation I’ve decided on an up do, as my dress has dramatic front and back detailing that I didn’t want anything to detract from. I left my hair and make-up in place, like they suggested, for the whole day and it still looked wonderful by 11pm. I was really pleased with the whole experience and being dressed up made me feel so excited to finally marry my best friend. Thank you all for sticking with me throughout my wedding journey. I hope you enjoy planning your own day and everything turns out perfectly!

FACING FACTS

As someone who likes to micromanage everything, this situation was certainly out of my comfort zone. I took two of my bridesmaids with me for my first appointment for moral support, and the seamstress, Danielle, was wonderful. She made us feel really at ease and like nothing was too much trouble. She knew right away how to alter my dress and was able to do it within a quick timeframe. I left the appointment feeling much calmer but also a little apprehensive about how the dress would eventually turn out. Fast forward a month, it was time for my second fitting and for the bridesmaids’ dresses to be altered. After a morning of panicking and worrying, I can’t put into words how relieved I felt when I tried on my dress and it fit like a glove. It still needed a few tweaks here and there, but overall I felt much happier as I was no longer drowning in a sea of fabric and worrying that my boobs might fall out at a moment’s notice! Danielle was also very reassuring to the bridesmaids who were worried about parts of their dresses and, within a week, we had all three back looking perfect.

Having had several meltdowns over this, my advice to any nearlyweds-to-be is to try not to panic and trust your suppliers. As long as they have good reviews and are confident in their capabilities, then leave it to them – they’re the experts after all!

PLANNING YOUR STAG DO I’ll be honest, I never really saw the purpose of a stag do. Admittedly in my mind, I had this warped perception of the event being a trip to a dubious location to take part in nefarious activities. I’m not a particularly good drinker, and as I creep onto the darker side of my 30s, I’m even worse at handling a hangover, so the prospect of this seemed less than appealing. Sitting down to discuss with my (similarly worldweary) best man, we came to the reassuring realisation that a stag do can be whatever you want it to be. In my instance, I like Centre Parcs, and the thought of a trip there (and many, many barbecues) seemed like a slice of heaven, so this was a bit of a no-brainer. Ultimately my advice to any groom-to-be is don’t be afraid to book something that will make you happy. If your groomsmen deserve their place in your party, they won’t challenge your choices.

Hello readers, as I’m sure you’re all well aware, my beautiful Melissa has been detailing our journey from our couch-based lockdown proposal to the wedding altar, and what a journey it has been! Thankfully Melissa is the most organised person on the planet, so my involvement in this process has been minimal at best, however that being said, I’ve picked up one or two things along the way that Melissa has generously given me this space to share...

Hindsight is a marvellous thing

Melissa’s hubby-to-be opens a window into the wedding planning journey from the groom’s perspective

CHOOSING YOUR GROOMSMEN Thankfully this was quite an easy one for me. My best man has been my closest ally and confident for 15 years now, so there was no hesitation in my mind when asking him. My biggest concern was that having four groomsmen might be too many, but I couldn’t imagine any of them not being next to me for support, so the thought of losing one of them from the party would have been like removing oxygen. Another thing I’m grateful for is that they all get along brilliantly. I’ve heard some real horror stories about infighting between people’s bridesmaids and groomsmen, so this is definitely something to consider when selecting your party. You might love them all, but do they like each other? You’d think that people would pull together for their friend’s biggest day, but you never know.

wedding is don’t lose any sleep over not inviting someone, chances are they probably weren’t going to invite you to their wedding anyway!

GUEST LIST Being the social beast I am, I found putting together a finalised wedding guest list quite difficult. Much to Melissa’s dismay I wanted to invite everyone I’d ever met and their postman. However, (thankfully) the capacity of our venue and overall budget (I don’t think I appreciated how expensive day guests are) put the brakes on my invite rampage and forced me to reign in my somewhat.expectationsIfoundthatIfeltquiteguiltyaboutnotinvitingeveryoneI’veeverspokento,butyoudefinitelydoneedtodrawthelinesomewhere.Myadvicetoanyoneplanninga

BRIDE’S DIARY 75

THE SPEECH This is a big one, probably the biggest responsibility of the groom. The wedding day is such a big event in a person’s life, and the speeches really stick with attendees – good or bad! My first piece of advice would be not to leave it to the last minute. It’s certainly one of those things that can be put off, but I promise it won’t be worth the anxiety! There are thousands of great speech templates online that you can use as a starting point. Once I got started, I found writing about my loved ones and the significance of the day was easy, as it’s your opportunity to be honest, and just gush about everything. You proposed for a reason and this is your chance to share it with everyone, including your bride. Write from your heart, speak from the bottom of your lungs and try not to stare at your feet the whole time! Oh, and practicing the speech once or twice before the big day probably isn’t a bad idea!

LET IT FLOW

I’m really struggling with patches of very dry skin on my face and nothing I’ve tried helps. I’m panicking that this will ruin my big-day make-up. Can you Janehelp?says:

DRY SPELL

There’s also an array of gorgeous headpieces that work better with hair down, such as decorative headbands, tiaras, hair vines or crowns. Even just an embellished slide could be all you need for that perfect finishing touch.

I’d like to wear my hair down for the wedding, but how can that be elevated to look bridal?

|

Here are my top tips for alleviating those dry patches of skin, which form uneven flaky areas of built-up foundation and powder that will be visible on close-up images.

First and foremost, stay hydrated – keep those water bottles topped up! You’ll also need to avoid harsh toners and wipes that dry the skin. And instead of wash cleansers, use a cream cleanser instead. Exfoliate once or twice per week. This will prevent pores clogging, resulting in fewer breakouts. It also increases collagen production, promoting skin elasticity while minimising the appearance of fine lines and related sagging. Importantly in your case, it will keep your skin silky soft and smooth by buffing away and removing dead skin cells. Once you start exfoliating regularly, you’ll find that serums, moisturisers and growth factors penetrate deeper into the skin, enabling them to work more effectively. Lymphatic drainage will be stimulated causing an oxygen-rich blood flow to feed and nourish the skin’s surface, producing that sought after healthy bridal glow. Exfoliation is a must too if you’re using fake tan, as it will prevent orange patches and uneven coverage. Use a gentle scrub if your skin is sensitive but if it’s oily or problematic, an abrasive scrub is recommended. You could even make homemade facial scrubs using ingredients such as honey, oats, brown sugar and coffee granules mixed in base oils such as jojoba or coconut.

Victoria says: There are already so many elements to a wedding outfit that we don’t normally wear on a day-to-day basis that sometimes it just feels right to let one part of yourself be natural. What better way than to let your hair shine in its true form? After all, who dons a veil to do the supermarket shop?! You’ll look bridal anyway, but there’s no reason you can’t glow up your hair and have it on point for the big day. Keeping it in tip top condition is important. So, whether you opt for a salon deep-conditioning treatment or a home remedy; these help to remove product build up, hydrate your scalp and alleviate broken cuticles, which are responsible for keeping your hair strong and moisturised.

Don’t dismiss on-the-day prep, even if you’re leaving it unadorned. As a hairdresser, I love to set the hair accordingly, be it heat-protected and straightened or set to enhance the natural curl. It also helps to protect it against the inevitable possibility that the weather may decide to change at the drop of a hat.

Q&A Beauty

“In the spirit of full disclosure, I did not get this No Makeup concept initially. But having tried it, I’m more than a convert, I’m an addict! The light-reflecting pigments provide a soft, satin finish while the serum texture formulated with acyl-glutathione means it glides on and blends like a dream. It didn’t crease and my eyes looked brighter. It also acts as a great base for a bolder eyeshadow look, but works just as well on its own for subtle everyday wear.”

“This fab new kit has everything you need to create the perfect brow. I won’t lie I panicked slightly when I opened it up, not knowing where to start, but the super-helpful folk at Deck of Scarlet have included a stepby-step how to on the reverse, so all was well. The final look is subtle and totally natural, the perfect complement to a bridal make-up look. The highlight for me is the sculpting wax. It held my brows in place all day without leaving them feeling greasy or crunchy – both of which I’ve experienced with other products!”

“I’m always on the lookout for pigmented eyeshadows that are quick and easy to apply, and this dual-ended product didn’t disappoint. On one end of the stick is a creamy crayon that glides over the eyes and blends out beautifully, then flip the product over to find a non-sticky glitter liquid that stays on all day – it’s the perfect duo!” – Olivia Gibson YOU CAUGHT MY EYE!

“Hypoallergenic, ph balanced, paraben-free, gluten-free, mercury-free and formulated with eco-cert approved ingredients – what’s the catch? There doesn’t seem to be one! I was a touch sceptical at first, but I’m actually rather impressed with it. The formula is silky when wet and completely matte when dry. Although I didn’t put it to the test of crying and have no skin allergies, I can confirm that it’s smudge-proof, builds well without getting claggy and was very kind on my eyes.”

“Shimmering champagne gold is the most subtle of this palette’s six-shade collection, creating a soft, glowing look that I loved. While those looking for a bold, striking look, will adore the darker brown options. The other shades are red/gold inspired and all suited my skin tone perfectly. Each hue is easily blendable and all work well as a subtle daytime or standout evening look. They’re long-lasting and after a full day, my eyes still looked fabulous.”

– Beth Morton

“I’ve never tried loose pigment eyeshadows before and was sceptical when these first arrived in the office, but after just one application, I was hooked! These highly-concentrated products are easy to apply and are vegan and cruelty-free – a huge bonus. I love how you can create a soft and subtle look or build up the product for more glam.”

COLOUR PALETTE

The Bridgerton effect

The Regency era was defined by the baby blue colour that can be spotted in almost every episode. Known as Regency blue, it is the perfect hue to weave into your flowers, decorations or dress code. For a 21st-century update, Pantone have named the colour of 2022 ‘Very Peri’. The shade of violet-infused blue is perfect for a subtle nod to the Bridgerton world. Soft tones of blush and pink were also extremely popular at the time and are perfect for creating an ultra romantic setting when you tie the knot. Take inspiration from Princess Beatrice of York’s wedding to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in summer of 2020, the pretty pinks and fresh natural palette were a more modern twist on a classic regal wedding.

Everyone’s favourite period drama re-entered our lives with a bang at the end of March when season two of Bridgerton became Netflix’s most viewed English-language TV series, watched for 251.7 million hours in its debut week alone. And the show is certainly not going anywhere, having been renewed for both seasons three and four back in April of last year, following the huge success of season one. Many of us are captivated by the opulence and extravagance of high society shown on our screens and so desperate to feed some historical glamour into our own lives – especially during our big day. Regency era and Bridgerton-themed celebrations are set to be one of the biggest wedding trends this year. Achieving this lavish style may seem impossible at first but we’ve broken down some of the simplest ways to inject 18th-century luxury into your nuptials.

Editorial assistant Gracie Leader looks at how Netflix’s biggest show has influenced weddings

The parklands of Stowe House (www.stowe.co.uk) in Bedfordshire was the location for these scenes, the 17th-century Ducal Palace boasts individuality and elegance for a fairytale wedding.

VENUES

One aspect that defines the awe-inspiring beauty of the show is the grand country homes and sweeping ballrooms.

As nearly all of the filming for the show took place in the South of England, many of the real locations you see in the show can in fact be hired out for your wedding celebrations.

The ballrooms in Leigh Court (www.leighcourt.co.uk) in Bristol are where we see many of the characters dance together at a number of parties held throughout the series. The 19th-century mansion is surrounded by 27 acres of wooded grounds and green lawns, and the grand double staircase in the Great Hall is perfect for making your first entrance as a married couple.

In the opening episode of the first season, the outdoor Vauxhall Ball set the standard for the grandness we could expect.

One easy way to add a touch of gilded glamour to your look is by accessorising with opera gloves. To modernise your wedding gown a sheer pair is the way forward.

Empire Waist, Marchesa Bridal 2022 Corsets, Marchesa Bridal 2022 Opera Gloves, ShleifDressBridalCo, Etsy Navy herringbone tailcoat, Next

FASHION It’s not just on screen fashion that has been inspired by the extravagance of the Regency era. Those attending this year’s Met Gala were asked to adhere to the dress code ‘Gilded Glamour’, taking inspiration from the high society of Gilded Age New York during the late 1800s. For a wedding gown fit to make you a diamond of the first water lots of inspiration can be taken from the dresses of this time. Empire waist gowns were extremely popular during the time period and it’s unsurprising considering how flattering they are. For an ultraromantic style look for a dress with capped sleeves also. Corsets were, of course, a huge part of fashion in the Regency era and now they are once again having resurgence. Whilst during the time period they were a part of the undergarments worn by the bride, now they can be a featured part of your ensemble.

www.lauraberesford.com81 INSPIRATION

If you want to recreate the lush floral arrangements seen in Daphne’s wedding to the Duke of Hastings in the first season, shown last year, English garden-style arrangements with fresh greenery are best to create that clean and natural setting. Standing beneath a floral arch, just like Daphne and Simon, when saying your vows will ensure your photographer can capture some dreamy and ethereal images from your ceremony.

Sending out your invitations to your guests is one of the first ways to set the tone for your wedding. Handwritten notes featuring swooping calligraphy perfectly encapsulate the elegant nature of yourIncorporatecelebration.watercolour and impressionist-style florals into your stationery for a whimsical affair. Gold detailing and other refined touches make sure your wedding stationery gives a perfect nod to the Regency era. Sealing your invites with a wax seal will make guests feel as though they’re receiving salacious gossip from Lady Whistledown herself.

FLOWERS Any watcher of Bridgerton will know the budget they had for flowers when making the show was pretty impressive. The dreamy purple wisteria that draped over the exterior of the hysteria, causedfamily’sBridgertonresidencefansmassasmany were keen to recreate the swoon-worthy look. Although it can be hard to get your hands on, if you’re having a spring time wedding you may be lucky as many country house wedding venues have wisteria climbing up the outside of their buildings. It’s definitely something worth asking your venue about.

Grooms can take inspiration from the dukes of Bridgerton and wear a morning suit complete with a tailcoat for a look that can compete with Jane Austen’s Mr Darcy. To ensure all your guests are involved with the theme of your celebrations, a black tie or formal wear dress code can encourage everyone to attend in their finery.

INVITATIONS

CAKE One of the most spectacular visuals from Daphne and Simon’s wedding was a massive wedding cake that stood at 4.5-foot tall. In addition to its impressive height, the centrepiece was extremely detailed, right down to the Bridgerton and Hastings crests iced on. Detailed, extravagant cakes are certainly making a comeback in 2022. This year the UK’s oldest British caterer is recreating a royal wedding cake made by its founder 126 years ago, to celebrate their 175thSearcy’sanniversary.catering (https://searcys.co.uk) has taken a trip back through its archives to the cake made for the1896 royal wedding of Princess Maud, then the future Queen of Norway, to Prince Carl of Five-tiersDenmark.of Dundee fruit cake are covered with delicate marzipan and white and gold lattice work icing before topped with carefully crafted sugar work of flowers, fruits, cherubs and lions all recreated by the cakemakers. This style of cake is perfect for those going all out regalia-inspired on their wedding day. Pressed floral cakes are a great option for those still inspired by the 18th century but wanting a more earthy, whimsical feel for their day. Bakeries typically use edible flowers grown, picked and hand-pressed. They can be designed according to your favourite flowers and even match your bouquet.

Bridgerton that audiences hold close to their heart is the orchestral renditions of pop throughoutsongsthe show.

If you plan on getting hitched in the warmer months, traditional lawn games are an amazing era-inspired way to entertain your guests after the ceremony. A game of croquet before the evening celebrations is fun for both young and older guests alike.

ENTERTAINMENT One of the ofmemorablemostelements

Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift played by string ensemble provides the backdrop for Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma’s courtship in season two. If you wish to recreate this soundtrack for your own love story, a string quartet or harpist will produce the perfect atmosphere for walking down the aisle or during your first dance. If you too want a mixture of classical and chart tunes, ask your guests to suggest some of their favourite tracks to be played by your musicians.

For your tableware, fine, floral china is a gorgeous nod to 18th-century Britain and the perfect decorative touch for the detail-orientated bride. Gold cutlery or gold-rimmed glassware flaunt opulence and abundance but can be inexpensive if hired. Having a champagne tower at your reception is the perfect indulgence enjoyed by high society – and your guests too. It’s a great touch to follow your wedding toast or a grand welcome as your guests enter.

DECORATION Maximalists rejoice as the only way to decorate a Regency era-inspired wedding is to go all out. And we mean ALL OUT. Look to see if your venue has a chandelier, as this is a perfect way to recreate the grand atmosphere seen in the Bridgerton world. Oversized centrepieces are a signature of nearly all the weddings and balls held in the series. Work with your florist and wedding planner to create some awe-inspiring table decorations your guest will remember.

The sprawling roof terrace, which will officially open on 1st June, 2022, is a standout feature at The Lighthouse Athens, offering 360-degree views that sweep across the Athenian cityscape and ancient archaeological ruins.

A GASTRONOMIC DELIGHT

While tired and hungry from our journey, these emotions were soon replaced with appreciation of the traditional welcome we received. Heading into the hotel we were given a quick tour of the awe-inspiring grounds and facilities, and it was straight down to breakfast. With many restaurants on site, Ottimo and Zest are used as a buffet option for all three meals, suffice to say, there’s something for everyone. However, when in Rome and all that – we immediately tucked into curry for breakfast, a habit we all continued throughout the stay.

There were countless reasons why Sri Lanka was my number one bucket list destination – with the tropical island pipping New Zealand, the Maldives and Vietnam to the top spot – but the one that stood out to me is the fact it is a Buddhist country, with a culture based on peace and family.

Travel goals

An island country nestled in South Asia, Sri Lanka has always been a bucket-list destination for Louise Prance, with her recent trip living up to her expectations and then some… 86

MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES

While the unstable social climate was garnering news coverage at the time of my trip, there is not one point during my stay that I felt any unrest. From the second the tropical heat hit me as I arrived, to the moment I stepped back on the plane with a heavy heart upon my departure, I felt totally secure.

If you’re looking for something ala carte, the beachside Sea-MeatsSpice Seafood restaurant is the place to be. With the Head Chef looking after the menu, be prepared for a gastronomical sensation, before retiring to the plush sofas for a sundowner with the sand between your toes. The Fuze bar is perfect for a nightcap, and with dramatic ceilings and art aplenty, it oozes luxury.

Other highlights for fellow foodies included high tea looking out over the ocean, plus the authentic Sri Lankan cooking lesson and Chef’s Table Experience and dinner – all of which are able to be booked directly through the hotel. If you’re looking for a special honeymoon treat – I’d recommend all of the above!

The flight time may be long, however, it was comfortable, and oh boy, does Sri Lanka make up for the time spent in the air. Upon arrival at the airport, we were whisked away at a rate of knots towards our destination of Cinnamon Bentota Beach hotel. My advice? Save the jet lag slumber for a little while longer, as you’d be mistaken to not fully immerse yourself in the changing landscape you’ll experience on the journey there. The hustle and bustle of Colombo is an assault to the senses – albeit an exciting one. Arriving in the morning, we watched as parents took their children to school on TukTuks and workers started their day. However, soon enough, the city rolled away and we were treated to the lush green landscape Sri Lanka is so famous for. Arriving at the Cinnamon Beach Hotel was an altogether memorable experience. A luxurious property nestled in the mesmerising Indian Ocean along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, it has a heritage dating back to the 60’s and was designed by one of Asia’s most influential architects, Geoffrey Bawa. It is the ultimate tropical destination perfect for an art and architecture enthusiast or a lover of exquisite oceans.

Well known for its jungles, Sri Lanka certainly didn’t disappoint on this front. Tearing ourselves away from the array of calming pools – and pool bar – we headed to the Lunuganga Geoffrey Bawa’s Country Estate, where we were treated to a tour. If art and culture is your thing – this is one excursion not to be missed. The country house of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the estate is just a short distance from the hotel, and had been used as a cinnamon estate during the Dutch era and then a rubber plantation under the British. In 1949, the estate was bought by Bawa and was converted into a weekend house where he created a tropical version of a European Renaissance Garden. It took the architect 40 years to complete the house.

ART AND CULTURE

A PEACEFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP Cinnamon Bentota Beach offers 16 Suites with unique sets of artworks that were commissioned from Sri Lankan artists as part of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts’ pledge to support the local arts and crafts. Eight artists were commissioned to depict a theme and record what they felt the name of the suite meant to them - resulting in each suite telling a story of the people and languages of Sri Lanka.

ADRENALINE JUNKIE If watersports are your thing, you won’t be disappointed at Cinnamon Bentota Beach. Taking place on the Bentota river, there are endless options from water skiing, to jet skis, banana boats and doughnuts. While first trying my hand at the doughnuts, the jet ski was a definite front runner. With the water so calm and the river so vast, it was the perfect opportunity to open up and let rip!

OUT ON THE WATER However, for me, the highlight was most definitely the boat ride on the Madu Ganga and visit to the Mangrove Forest. With an excellent tour guide, we jetted down the river doing our best to spot all the animals that were highlighted as making the river their home. From bear monkeys to water monitors to jellyfish, to kingfisher’s – it was a veritable treat for an animal lover like me. The jury is still out on whether I’m happy or disappointed that the crocodiles kept themselves at bay. And with Mangrove forests stabilising the coastline, reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides, the intricate root system of mangroves also makes these forests attractive to fish and other organisms seeking food and shelter fromWithpredators.littlestops along the way, it was truly special to see cinnamon being made amidst the forest –and I’d recommend bringing some pocket change as it’ll be a feat to walk away empty handed. If you’re one for a spot of shopping combined with a walking tour of a beautiful town, make sure you head to Galle. We combined this with the river tour, and it was well worth the hour’s drive. A stunning town steeped in history there are views for miles and it would be well worth booking with Walkers Tours, and in particular Ashoka Dissanayke, to learn more about this beautifully resplendent town’s heritage. If you do head to Galle, don’t forget to leave space in your luggage for your journey home. With boutique shops and traditional stores alike, I’d challenge anyone to leave empty handed. If you’re looking for souvenirs or mementos of your trip – this is the place to get them.

TOURISM SUPPORT Sri Lanka has had its fair share of upheaval, from the 2004 Tsunami, the terrorist attacks in 2019 and now the national crisis. However, in my opinion this is all the more reason to go and visit this wonderful country, and give its tourism industry the boost it so desperately needs. Not only did I feel safe wherever I travelled in Sri Lanka, I am already planning my next trip back, and this time I may buy an open-ended ticket home…

Caribbean vibes

Enjoy breathtaking, tropical views whilst listening to turquoise waters rolling in with a glass of St. Lucia’s famous rum punch in hand 88

As the St. Lucians say, “No pressure, no problem!” So many tropical islands provide luxury, but only St. Lucia offers this alongside the feeling of joy and laughter courtesy of the amazing people. Such a friendly country, I was so warmly welcomed – and laughed a lot! This is the ultimate location to unwind after planning your big day. If you don’t know much about St. Lucia, it’s an eastern Caribbean Island with a pair of dramatically tapered mountains, known as the Pitons. These volcanic mounds are a spectacular landmark of the island, lush and green and ready for the adventurer in you to explore. St. Lucia’s tropical climate makes it a prime spot for year-round sunshine and warm weather. Prepare for short downpours as those surrounding rainforests bursting with colour need watering.

THE LANDINGS RESORT

The Landings Resort & Spa is a beachfront hotel with a private marina, positioned on Rodney Bay. The Resort invites you to enhance your stay with its all-inclusive package, allowing you not only to sample their extensive food and beverage offerings but full access to the quality fitness centre, unlimited use of the sea kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and snorkelling gear. During my stay, I enjoyed the resort’s entertainment. Taking in the Caribbean vibes, we enjoyed a delicious barbecue feast on the beach while watching fire throwers and limbo dancers doing their thing on the stage… and did I mention there was rum punch?! If your honeymoon is more of a familymoon, the resort has you covered with its awesome Kids Club and babysitting service. What more could you ask for?

If you like to do more than lay on a sun lounger, then St. Lucia has much to offer whether that’s zip-ling through the rainforest or taking a guided hike up St. Lucia’s signature Pitons. During my stay, I enjoyed a visit to Project Chocolat from the well-known Hotel Chocolat. I was blown away by the luscious rainforest location, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the cacao groves. I was then invited to make my very own chocolate bar and tasted some amazing foods from their cacao inspired menu which included cacao mac ‘n cheese and even cacao burgers!

THE LANDINGS SPA

The revamped, luxurious 7,000-square-foot spa at The Landings features serene therapy rooms, some with outdoor hydrotherapy terraces so you can relax and take in the views after your treatment. As well as enjoying massages, manis and pedis, you can request a hair stylist to ensure your locks have full attention during your fabulous stay. There’s also a state-of-the-art fitness centre with on-site staff and personal trainers to keep you in shape.

Whatever your accommodation preference: marina view, beachfront or ocean view, you’ll be blown away. My marina view suite was equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen and private plunge pool. Listening to the birds with a cup of tea in hand in my plunge pool is a memory I’ll never forget.

ACCOMMODATION

If you really want to push the boat out for your once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon, then take the transfer from Hewanorra International Airport to the resort via private helicopter. Just let The Landings know and they’ll arrange it all! Furthermore, to extend the luxe package, you can request a butler service to make your stay as carefree and relaxing as possible. Go on, treat yourself!

You can’t go to the Caribbean without enjoying the freshest seafood. However, the local specialties are a must try from curried goat to breadfruit (similar to potatoes but sweeter and starchier), and saltfish (stewed fish, which is usually sold dried and salted, with boiled green bananas, locally referred to as green fig).
