As your celebrant and wedding officiant I am devoted to creating meaningful and memorable ceremonies that celebrate who you are and what you hope to become together. With Soulmaking Ceremonies you are encouraged to reimagine the traditional wedding ceremony and create something truly unique. Choosing to create a bespoke wedding ceremony enables you to include your individual and collective dreams, inspiration and spiritual beliefs in a way that is relevant and authentic for you. Designing a wedding ceremony that is personal, participatory and held with care, love and intention is my speciality, as well as incorporating ritual and elements of the natural world to celebrate your connection with what you hold sacred. I welcome all faiths, genders and beliefs, holding an inclusive space for you and your guests to come together and share a profound experience of love that will infuse the rest of your day and future together. “Isla’s approach is thoughtful, intuitive and flexible. She worked with us to come up with the perfect order of ceremony, incorporating our ideas and suggesting rituals which would symbolise some of our goals as a couple. Our guests gave us fantastic feedback, even the most traditional saying it was the best wedding they had been to.” “She held the ceremony with such elegance and familiarity and conducted the ceremony with such gentle confidence and ease. From start to end we felt supported, loved and able to just be us. .”

Fun times F

inally, the sun is shining! It feels like it’s been a long time coming doesn’t it? As much as I’m very much a winter bunny, I must admit that feeling a warm breeze on my face for a change has cheered me up. My friends and I have decided to compile a bucket list of activities we’d like to enjoy this summer, and plans are well underway for our very own CWM bride’s hen do. If you’re worried about what your best gals might have planned for yours, the best way is to maintain an open line of communication. Make sure you lay down perimeters and make it abundantly clear well in advance if L plates, sashes and the like aren’t your thing. Olivia, Nolwenn and I sat bride Melissa down for a chat first to make sure we didn’t make any faux pas and asked her to provide us with a guest list and options for available dates. No doubt you’ll have been careful about your bridesmaid choices, they love you and know you well, so we’re sure you’re in capable hands. Relax and enjoy the break from planning everything yourself. You’ll find this, our summer issue, brimming with plenty of inspiration and advice as always. We chatted to the region’s boutique owners for their take on what’s hot in bridal fashion at the moment. They’ve even given us the lowdown on styles to look out for in the future. Among these pages you’ll also find our ultimate guide to venue styling, where you’ll discover everything from how to choose a theme and colour palette to avoiding the most common pitfalls. Still hungry for more wedspiration? Don’t forget to check out our social media channels @YourBristolSomersetWedding, @cwm_wedding, @countyweddings and of course, the latest member of the family, our YouTube channel (to find it, just head over to www.youtube.com and search “County Wedding Magazines”). TIME WELL SPENT

This summer, guests of boutique bolthole No.15 by GuestHouse Bath will be delighted to discover a thoughtful reimagining of the eight bedrooms in the hotel’s cosy Coach House. With its Gothicstyle frontage and quatrefoil windows, The Coach House sits pretty and preserved behind the hotel’s main townhouse. GuestHouse’s inventive interiors combine heritage and modernity, with artisanal touches that celebrate local creators. Inspired by the building’s beginnings as a Georgian carriage house and taking its lead from the main house, the new bedrooms honour the history of the surroundings. Guests are greeted by a dramatic entrance featuring calming deep olive greens and uplifting candy pink tones, while warmly-lit hallways open up into light-filled bedrooms decorated in soft colour palettes. With a strong commitment to championing local makers and creators, GuestHouse has selected finishes, fittings and furniture that casts the spotlight on talented Somerset-based creatives. A total makeover of the Coach House offers the perfect opportunity to get away with your best gals and guys to celebrate your impending nuptials as you get to spread out and enjoy time together. Here, you’ll have the privacy and freedom to play music on the record players or gather on the fluffy sofas and armchairs for board games by the fire. It’s a place where you can all kick back, relax, indulge and make some special memories. Discover more at www.guesthousehotels.co.uk

LOVE IS LOVE

WELCOME RETURN Andrew Swann has been appointed executive chef at The Castle at Taunton in Somerset, returning to where he started his career more than 20 years ago. As part of his role, Swann will be responsible for the food and beverage offer across the award-winning hotel, including its 70-cover Brazz Restaurant, as well as its 44 rooms and suites. He initially joined the business in 2000 as a 17-year-old commis chef, and has since worked in some of the UK’s top hotels and restaurants including Michelin-starred Zafferano and L’Escargot, as well as The Savoy. Most recently, he was head chef at Luciano’s by Luciano Pierre White in Dorchester. A classically-trained chef, his cooking style focuses on using seasonal produce, sourced locally. The move comes following a recent £150,000 kitchen refurbishment, allowing the restaurant to offer wider, more sustainable and energy efficient options for guests. Andrew says, “It feels so great to be back home. I’m especially excited to be able to work with an incredible core team and to have access to some of the country’s greatest produce. Where we are, we’re spoilt every season and I can’t wait to get reacquainted with the local farmers and producers.” It sounds to us as though it’ll be well worth keeping an eye out for Andrew’s menus and sampling the delicious fare on your next date night. The National Trust is delighted that the ancient Horner Wood in Somerset, in its care, has been chosen as part of a nationwide network of 70 ancient woodlands and trees to be dedicated to The Queen in celebration of her Platinum Jubilee. Fingle Woods in the Teign Valley on Dartmoor, the ancient black walnut tree at Antony near Torpoint in Cornwall, and the Tolpuddle Martyrs tree in Dorset are further South West offerings to be selected. The initiative was launched by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, who is patron of The Queen's Green Canopy, a tree-planting initiative. Horner Woods is one of the largest unenclosed ancient seminatural woodlands in the UK. In 1995 it was made a National Nature Reserve together with the surrounding Dunkery moorland. Evidence of humans living in and using the woodland dates back thousands of years to the Bronze and Iron Ages, and seven settlements, six of which are still occupied, are recorded in the Doomsday Book. Little Quarme Cottages & Weddings is located in Exmoor National Park just a hop, skip and jump away from Horner Wood Nature Reserve and Dunkery Beacon. So, if you like the idea of saying “I do” in the shadow of this remarkable ancient woodland, it's well worth a look. Check out www.littlequarme-cottages.co.uk

GREAT EXPECTATIONS More than 350,000 weddings will take place in the UK this year with around £14.7 billion spent on these events globally. With so much money being invested in weddings, guests attending will no doubt have some expectations! New research from Steven Stone Jewellers reveals that Bristol is in the top three cities whose residents get invited to the most weddings. The engagement ring specialists surveyed 2,000 Brits to find out exactly how much they’re spending on each element of a wedding, how they feel about forking out and what they expect in return. It materialised that the average cost of being a wedding guest in 2022 is up to a whopping £1,203, with the bill racked up by expenditure on an outfit, accommodation, transport, childcare, gifts and more! Of those surveyed in Bristol, 30.21 per cent will attend at least one wedding in 2022-23 and their list of expectations is topped by receiving a formal invitation and being served evening food. It may comfort you to know though that a mere six per cent said they expected a free bar, so you can save your pennies there! Finally, you may be surprised to hear that men spend more on their wedding guest outfit than women – £190 versus £121. 9

RUSTIC PERFECTION Court Farm, a lovingly restored 16th-century farmhouse, is set in ten acres of gardens and grounds in the heart of the Somerset countryside. New to its wedding venue offering is a recently-converted second barn, the Woolshed. A beautiful industrial-chic space, it works brilliantly as a wedding breakfast location with a twist. Suitable for practically anything from a ceilidh to a hog roast, it’s so versatile and the choice is yours. It can seat up to 108 nearest and dearest and is stylishly furnished with trestle tables, antique chairs, floral hoops and rustic lighting. A further exciting addition is the newly-installed luxurious wood-fired hot tub, offering the perfect opportunity to enjoy some R&R the night before W-day. Court Farm can be hired for two nights, including accommodation for 10 to 14 people in the boutique-styled cottages and cow byres. All units face their own private courtyard, which is frequently used for exchanging vows and enjoying cocktails and canapés. SLICE AS NICE The UK’s oldest British caterer is celebrating its 175th anniversary with the recreation of a royal wedding cake created by its founder, John Searcy, 126 years ago. The caterer has taken a trip back through its archives to the1896 royal wedding of Princess Maud, then the future Queen of Norway, to Prince Carl of Denmark. Considered the society wedding of the year, royal attendees included Queen Victoria, grandmother of the bride, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and the Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark. Confectioner and Royal Warrant holder, John Searcy came out of retirement to bake the breathtaking multi-tiered big-day bake. Adorned with sweet treats, the cake included fine sugar work flowers, roses and angels, along with the Royal Arms of England and Denmark. In tribute to its founder, Searcys has recreated the same cake in partnership with baker Elizabeth Solaru of Elisabeth’s Cake Emporium. Working alongside Searcys own pastry chef, Yvonne Graham, the confectioners spent three weeks tirelessly completing the bake to reflect the original design. Five-tiers of Dundee fruit cake are covered with delicate marzipan and white and gold lattice work icing before being toped with carefully crafted sugar work of flowers, fruits, cherubs and lion. The cake will travel across Searcys restaurants throughout the summer, so for your chance to sample a slice of the action head to The Pump Room in Bath (https://thepumproombath.co.uk) from early July to early August. The Princess Maud wedding cake can also be made to order for any wedding celebrations booked at Searcys iconic venues. To find out more check out www.searcys.co.uk 10

Are Here To Stay It’s official! Outdoor ceremonies are now a permanent fixture. Is your dream to say your vows barefoot on the lawn with sun shining overhead, breeze in your hair, birds singing in the trees? We can’t guarantee the weather, but the open sky is now all yours.

phy at a r g o t o h P errie James & K n Estate t o g n i l l i D Barn, The Cider Originally brought in as a temporary covid measure, the law changed in April to allow couples to say I Do outside at any existing licensed venue. Somerset Registration Service has been working with wedding venues across Somerset & North Somerset to give couples a greater choice of spots to say their vows. There are still a few essential boxes to tick for safety and accessibility, but otherwise all venues with gardens or outside space may be able to offer that open air option you’re looking for.

Simon & Kiana Photography at Huntstile Organic Farm

Our Outdoor Top Tips Inside or out, only licensed venues can hold legal ceremonies, so still no vows on the beach or on top of Glastonbury Tor. Ceremonies can be held anywhere in the gardens and grounds. It’s worth not straying too far away though – bathroom breaks, catering top ups, and getting yourself from the prep room to the aisle are major considerations. Let your venue help you find the perfect spot – trust them, they know what will work for everyone on the day. Make sure the site is accessible for your guests – heels, mobility issues and grassy hills aren’t a great combination! Let your guests know the plan – they might want to opt for a change of sensible shoes and an extra cosy layer or a broader brimmed hat and some sun screen. Have a bad weather backup plan. This is England, after all. Don’t feel bad if you need to head inside. We’ll make sure the ceremony is so full of love you’ll forget you had to switch plans!

While the old rules already allowed outdoor vows with the wedding party standing under a permanent structure like a gazebo or bandstand, this really does free things up. Venues have added stone circles, private woodlands, walled gardens and lakeside lawns to their ceremony offers – even marquees now get the go ahead. Spots where only nonlegal blessings could take place are now a choice for the real deal. Our registrar teams are super excited about a season of joining happy couples in some truly gorgeous new locations.

LEIGH COURT Shielded from the city bustle by Leigh Woods, Leigh Court was designed by architect Thomas Hopper in 1814 for Bristol’s first recorded millionaire. The estate has a rich history: having been a religious sanctuary, a family home, and a hospital, it’s also been conquered by, gifted to and used as a safe-haven by kings for a thousand years. In fact, you may well recognise the graceful Grade II listed mansion from its starring role in various productions including Bridgerton and Poldark. All of the ground-floor rooms are licensed for ceremonies. While the fairytale staircase, skylights, and patterned floor in the Great Hall make it a popular choice; the blush-coloured Morning Room with its floor-toceiling windows and crystal chandelier is favoured by couples looking for a more intimate space. BERWICK LODGE Berwick Lodge is an imposing red-brick Victorian manor house, which offers you a first glimpse from the end of the tree- and lantern-lined driveway. The interior has everything you’d expect from a lodge, including open fires and wood panelling, but with an East-meets-West twist on the design. Set in 18 acres of beautiful gardens and woodland, Berwick boasts views that reach across to Wales. The grounds feature a wealth of photogenic elements such as a walkway to Aphrodite’s Dome, ornate fountains, an orchard and a summer house. Keeping the gardens looking fabulous is an ongoing project, managed by head gardener, Robert Dunster, who previously tended the grounds at Highgrove. Summeria is an upstairs room lit by skylights, perfect for ceremonies. You can find it in a converted stable block, the Mews, where an original stained-glass doorway leads you into the eaves. about you! DOUGHNUTS

REAL WEDDINGS

H

ayley and James met while working in their local department store as teenagers. Hayley would go to the restaurant for lunch where James worked and he’d give her a meal for free in the hopes she’d keep coming back! “To me, Hayley was the most beautiful woman in the store. I was instantly drawn to what can only be described as the most unique laugh you can imagine! Paired with her beauty, kindness and smile, I was head over heels.” He finally gathered the courage to ask her out while giving away more free food, in this case a ring doughnut, which has since become a symbol of their relationship! James proposed nine years later, while on holiday in New York. They’d taken a trip to Liberty Island and having carried the ring around in his pocket waiting for the right moment, he knew this was it. “After walking around the Statue of Liberty three times trying to pluck up the courage, I finally sat her down under a blossoming cherry tree, and asked her if she would marry me.” Of course, she accepted, so join us now as James tells us more about their wedding day...

SETTING THE SCENE Northover Manor was booked for 11th September, 2021. The couple had been attracted to the gorgeous outdoor ceremony area amongst the venue’s landscaped grounds. They also loved the fact that they could have exclusive use of the property, including all of the bedrooms where guests could stay the night. It also meant that Hayley was able to stay with her bridesmaids the night before. The colour palette for the day featured navy, blush pink and rose gold. This was reflected in the centrepieces – Martini glasses filled with blooms flowing over the edges and two large flower-filled concrete urns placed at each end of the top table. Each table was also decorated with jam jars and wine bottle lights, adding a glow that enhanced the ambience. The couple opted to allocate numbers to their tables, which were displayed on ceramic dishes. “These offered a lovely personal touch as they were unique to us,” James explains. As they found their seats, guests were welcomed by mini pink doughnut favours to represent the very one that brought the newlyweds together, these were joined by personalised M&Ms printed with a picture of them. The big-day bake boasted three tiers and two were gluten-free to make sure no one was left without. The bottom layer was a classic Victoria sponge, the middle was a carrot cake and the top was flavoured with lemon.

LOOKING THE PART The beautiful bride wore a sleeveless ivory lace dress with fitted bodice and tulle skirt, complete with diamanté detail. It had a corseted back fastening and she accessorised it with rose gold jewellery and a veil. James was dressed in a three-piece suit – the jacket and trousers were navy and he paired them with a grey tweed waistcoat. He finished the look with a rose gold tie and pocket square. His groomsmen and best man were dressed to match. The bridesmaids looked gorgeous in their navy maxi dresses with lace bodice detailing to complement the bride’s gown. They also wore rose gold heeled sandals to complement the colour palette further.

“Start planning as far in advance as you can. We had the majority of our suppliers booked years ahead meaning we spent most of the run-up with nothing else to sort and were able to sit back and relax while ticking off the days.” 27

TIME TO CELEBRATE To keep everyone entertained, the couple hired MJS Entertainment who provided a disco as well as a photo booth and props. “Marcus from MJS is also an amazing singer and he performed for us after our first dance. He put on an amazing disco too from a playlist we created, which our guests loved. The photo booth went down a treat with everyone having a great time with the props on offer,” James remembers.

REAL WEDDINGS

MEMORABLE MOMENTS James shares the day’s highlights: “We both felt nervous, but that was to be expected with emotions running high. All of that was replaced with happiness though, once Hayley walked down the aisle. “Our photographer Jon was an absolute legend! We couldn’t have asked for a better person to be in charge of the photography, he clicked with everyone and knew exactly what we wanted. He also came up with the brilliant idea of doing a champagne spray while we held umbrellas. Although, some of our nearest and dearest thought it would be a good idea to completely ignore them and spray it directly at us, which made for an experience and story we won’t forget for a while!”

THE GREAT GETAWAY It’s a familiar story, but due to Covid and it’s accompanying restrictions Hayley and James weren’t able to go on honeymoon after the wedding. But James told us this might not be such a bad thing after all, as it’s given them more time to save up and plan the best trip possible. They’ve now booked to travel around San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas in September 2022. “We plan on going for 14 days and spending time in each city exploring the sights. We both absolutely love the U.S. So planning it together has been easy,” he explains.

REAL WEDDINGS

Shannon and Richard chose a rustic theme with a blue and white palette for their wedding styling Images courtesy of Simon & Kiana Photography

R

ichard proposed to Shannon on Christmas Day 2017 with new beagle puppy, Reggie, on hand to assist. It was the couple’s first Christmas in their new home together and he woke her up bright and early at 4am ready for the surprise. Initially bleary eyed, she found a light box displaying the words “will you marry me?” and Richard down on one knee in front of the Christmas tree with Reggie sitting beside him proudly proffering the engagement ring, which was attached to his collar. “Of course I said ‘yes’ and we couldn’t wait to tell our family,” Shannon remembers. No sooner had the engagement been celebrated, than Shannon was online researching venues. The first one they went to view was Quantock Lakes and they fell in love with it as soon as they arrived. Richard’s number one hobby is fishing, so the first thing he asked was whether he could fish the lake the day before the wedding! He was so happy when they agreed that he was instantly sold as well as being convinced by how beautiful the surroundings were. “The staff are so friendly and welcoming. We love the use of space and how the venue has grown since we booked back in 2018,” Shannon says. The couple’s original wedding date was set for 20th June 2020, which would have been their 10-year anniversary, but with the disruption caused by Covid, they were forced to postpone several times. In the end, they decided to tie the knot almost a year later on 21st June 2021 under the 30-guest restriction in place at that time. “We had our ceremony and photos taken to remember the day, but our celebration wedding day took place on in January 2022,” Shannon explains. Join us as we learn more about that big January celebration from the bride herself... 33

Richard always knew he wanted a tweed suit, so his blue Marc Darcy three-piece was exactly what he was looking for. He accessorised with a yellow bow tie and brown shoes. The best man, groomsmen, pageboys and dads all wore matching suits with ties instead of bow ties.

The bridesmaids and I had white bouquets with some blue flowers dotted throughout to complement the girls’ dresses. The buttonholes were single white roses held by a yellow shotgun cartridges.

My Stella York wedding dress was a fitted ivory silhouette with appliqué detailing and a scalloped train. I originally wanted something with a big lace train, but when shopping I realised I needed something I’d be comfortable enough to move around in all day. So, I opted for a cathedral-length veil, which meant I could take it off after the ceremony.

We still had a ceremony on our January wedding day, but made it our own by having readings and I even wrote my own poem. The bridesmaids wore fulllength dresses with cap sleeves, a sequin top and a floaty skirt. The flowergirls meanwhile had white and blue dresses with a floral waistband and sparkly silver shoes.

34

On the dancefloor, we had floral love letters, which suited the colour palette along with lace drapes in the barn for the ceremony.

The centrepiece on each table was a trio of logs along with candles and wooden confetti. The place names were brown rustic handwritten cards tied with twine to the glow sticks. We went for table numbers instead of names, which were wooden blocks to complement the theme.

REAL WEDDINGS

We all enjoyed a selection of canapés after the ceremony, including mini beef burgers, mini sausage and mash and chicken satay skewers. For the wedding breakfast, we dined on a two-course meal of chicken on the bone on a bed of stuffing with seasonal vegetables and roasted new potatoes, and for dessert we had mini shot pots of chocolate mousse and banoffee cheesecakes.

Our evening food was pizza – our favourite! Each one came in its own little box. The food went down so well, all of our guests complimented it. In the evening a saxophone player and DJ kept us all entertained. They really knew how to get the party started and got everyone on the dancefloor. It was a wild night!

We wanted a cake that would be personal to us, so we opted for it to be decorated with silhouettes that told our love story. It didn’t just look great, it tasted great too! The tiers were flavoured raspberry ripple, salted caramel and cherry bakewell. 35

We originally booked to go to South Africa on safari, but this had to be cancelled. Instead, after our wedding in June 2021, we went to Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve in Kent on a safari getaway, which was brilliant. And in January 2022 we went to the New Forest for a week with our two dogs.

Our favours were glow sticks ready for guests to use in the evening, with the caption: ‘let love glow.’ We also had a build-your-own glow stick stand where they could make glasses, bracelets and necklaces. This was a huge hit amongst children and adults alike!

ess and Jake met aged 13 while undertaking the Ten Tors challenge with their local guide and scout groups. However, being from different schools and indeed, towns, they didn’t keep in touch afterwards and it wasn’t until the age of 17 that they met again at a scout jamboree. This time, they discovered lots in common and spent more time together. In 2007 they started dating and have been together ever since. No doubt Jess assumed there’d be no saving her 30th birthday celebrations, which had to be cancelled when the first lockdown was announced the week prior. Deciding to get some fresh air on the day itself, the couple set out for a walk with the dog. Pausing along the way, Jake pulled a beautiful engagement ring from his pocket and turned to Jess: “This wasn’t really supposed to be for your birthday, but today feels like the right time. Will you marry me?” It was a complete surprise for her and made what was bound to be a much quieter birthday than planned, the best one yet! Jess had long dreamed of saying “I do” at All Saints Church in Long Ashton. Her grandparents, parents and sister were all married there along with a fair few other couples in her family. So, the choice of ceremony spot was an easy one. When it came to the reception, the pair knew they wanted an outdoorsy vibe and remembering Jess’ sister’s wedding in their parents’ garden complete with tipis they opted to do the same. “The setting was just so lovely and it meant a lot to us to make memories there too,” Jess explains. Join us as the bride gives us the lowdown on W-day – 21st August, 2021... 39

I was so excited on the day, I couldn’t wait to get down that aisle! When the doors opened in the church and I saw all of our friends and family, I was a bit overwhelmed and teary, but then I saw Jake waiting at the other end and just felt excited. Although, I did cry a bit during the ceremony!

I wore Meg by Enzoani. Sarah and her team at The White Collection in Clevedon were fantastic. The dress was the complete opposite of what I thought I’d wear, but once I put it on I felt fantastic. I walked out to show my mum and sister and they cried, as did I!

Jake wore a three-piece suit teamed with a tie to complement the bridesmaids’ dresses. His groomsmen wore the same, but he had a fancier buttonhole allowing him to stand out. The whole groom’s party also wore a Marie Curie daffodil pin in memory of Jake’s grandad, Walter.

We had a beautiful round wooden pallet bar that we decorated with flowers, as well as a sweet cart, memory ladder and hanging wheel dressed in foliage and blooms.

The pathway to the marquee was lined with vintage-style lanterns and large potted hydrangea plants.

We always wanted food to be a big part of our day and had our hearts set on a traditional sit-down wedding breakfast. We replaced the starter with lots of canapés and offered a choice of three mains: slow-roasted beef, chicken supreme or veggie wellington. Guests could then decid e between profiteroles, white chocolate and raspberry crème brulee and chocolate brow nie for dessert. We had wood-fired pizzas for the evening, which were great and everyone loved them.

I think it was one of the first big days out people had been to since Covid struck, so everyone was just so happy and the space was full of laughter. Kieran the DJ started at around 7pm and I don’t think people stopped dancing until the very end of the night.

Our photographer Eleanor made us feel so comfortable and created the best atmosphere for us to get memorable snaps of the day. Everyone was brilliant and we wouldn’t change a thing about our day, well... maybe less rain, but other than that, nothing!

“I woke up excited, but relieved to have finally got there. We invested a lot of time into the planning and had lots of help that we’re very grateful for.” – Jake

aptured at The Mount Without, this gorgeous shoot uses the earthy tones of its historical surroundings to create a swoonworthy wedding palette. Oh-so modern hues of rust, peach, orange and gold blend seamlessly for a warm and romantic atmosphere. In fact the colours are carried cleverly throughout with great ideas for incorporating your scheme not just traditionally through the flowers, but also in the tableware via glasses, napkins, place names and favours. Plus, we’re totally here for this chic yet relaxed bridal style. The Grade II listed venue, located on St Michael’s Hill in Bristol, is available to hire for weddings. Originally a church it’s now an atmospheric creative space, also used for theatre and dance. It can accommodate guest lists from 40 up to 150 for the ceremony, with up to 200 welcome for the reception.

VENUE STYLING

A THEME

come true

The ultimate guide to styling your venue

J

oin us for a stroll through the wonderful world of wedding venue styling. It’s all too easy to carried away, but when a simple idea is executed to perfection, well, that’s when you have a theme come true!

CHOOSING A THEME Settling on a theme can be a tricky business, so the best way forward might be to consider your common ground. Karl Shoemark at Glastonbury-based Themes Inc says, “Why not find a wedding quiz or use your venue to make the decision for you? You might choose a theme inspired by where you met, a holiday you spent together or a dream adventure.” Alternatively, you may both decide to influence different areas. Wedding planner Samantha Smart from Wedding Regency says, “If the couple have different ideas then it may be worth combining two themes for example Harry Potter and Star Wars – it could be fun!” The key thing to bear in mind when you’re at this stage, to avoid getting carried away, is whether it’s realistic. Can your budget accommodate your grand plans for example? As Bath-based event stylist and floral designer Lauren Alexander points out, “The likes of Pinterest and Instagram are wonderful ways to glean inspiration, but often images are of carefully-curated styled shoots rather than real weddings, and it’s so hard to gauge the cost of their contents. Therefore, I spend a lot of time researching with my couples and finding out what floats their collective boat. What’s important though is to do something really well, rather than stretching your budget across the entire venue and making it less impactful.”

PICK A PALETTE One of keys to settling on the perfect colour palette for your big day is the time of year. Holly Allman-Lopez of Ambience Venue Styling Bath explains, “Different seasons naturally lend themselves to certain palettes. Spring and summer tend to suit lights or the brights, with an abundance of fresh flowers to choose from; whereas autumn and winter weddings work well with warm, rich tones with lots of lovely dried textures.” The other most important consideration, aside from simply what you like of course, is your venue. Lauren tells us, “Choosing your colour scheme before your venue can be a little dangerous! What if you’re adamant on a palette, but your surroundings completely clash? There’s something to be said for working with what the venue can offer rather than trying to pigeon-hole it into anything else. I love to work with couples to build a

gorgeous palette, which complements not only the venue, but also the bride’s dress and the bridal party attire, as well as having fun and being a little playful. Over the past few years we’ve seen a huge trend for pastel tones, but pops of colour are starting to come to the forefront now.” If you’re still undecided Karl has some further pointers: “What about your home? Take a look around, maybe these are the colours that best represent you. The most popular hues for weddings at the moment are champagne, white and ivory – these classic neutrals work as a base to support other colours, pairing well with any theme, style and venue.”

“Choose a maximum of three colours for a rustic, vintage look.” – Karl, Themes Inc THE VENUE SPEAKS VOLUMES It doesn’t pay to ignore your setting when it comes to the styling, not only when picking a palette, as practicality is crucial. So, there are some important points to bear in mind. Karl has some advice: “Think about your vision for the day and look for a venue that fits. If a rustic vibe is for you, perhaps a barn would be best. If you have your heart set on a fairytale of a big day, what about a castle or an abbey? You could chat to a planner before you start the search as they may be able to narrow your ideas down, less is more.” Lauren says, “Choosing your venue is like choosing your other half! There’ll be things you love and that’s why you picked it, but there’ll always be things that niggle.” On the topic of venue styling, the best thing you can do, as is the case in all other areas of planning your big day, is to quiz with as many questions as you can, both of the venue staff and of yourselves. “Will everything be in one room or are there multiple spaces available? Does the venue provide any décor?,” Samantha suggests asking. While Lauren reminds us, “Things can be changed or upgraded and you can rent plenty of different props to make the space more personal. So, don’t be afraid of a venue that might not be 100 per cent to your taste.” LOOKING AFTER THE PENNIES We’d always recommend that you sit down together and agree on a budget at the very start of your journey to W-day, before you do anything else. Deciding how much you want to devote to the venue styling will be 49

an important part of that, not least because it’s in area in which you can all too easily get swept away. This way, when you’re looking at venues you can get an idea of whether you’ll be able to achieve the look you want within budget given the blank canvas you have in front of you. Lauren says, “If you need to revamp the room to suit, you’ll be thinking about spending quite a bit of money. Bringing in outside suppliers who specialise in rentals or venue design can be a really helpful tool when trying to keep to a budget. “Hone in on what elements really make a difference and budget smartly. Start with the things that are a no-brainer to you. Ideally, these should be the things that make an impact when you walk into the reception space, such as gorgeous palette-matching linens as far as the eye can see. Work with what you have to spend but add an extra 20 per cent as there’ll often be something you haven’t accounted for that just makes your heart smile. It’s also worth investing in someone to pull everything together on the day too as they’ll remove a lot of stress and bring a sense of calm to the whole process.” Themes Inc.

CHECK OUT LAUREN’S DOS AND DON’TS THE DOS ❤ Hire a venue stylist to help you in the lead up, or at the very least on the day. ❤ Think about what makes you happy and work with that. Don’t worry about what other people might expect from your wedding. ❤ If you’ve spent on lovely elements ask your photographer to capture them. ❤ Ask about delivery of props and styling items as well as collection straight away as this can be a make or break for your budget. THE DON’TS ❤ Don’t get too bogged down with Pinterest or set on a single image you want to replicate. Work with your suppliers to create something unique that works for you. ❤ Don’t go into debt or get yourself into state over finances for the sake of making your wedding look a certain way. Often it’s the little touches that are appreciated and remembered by guests. HOLLY ADDS... “Try not to underestimate scale and proportion. It takes a surprising quantity of décor to dress most wedding venues and a table runner that’s too short, laid out with a handful of tea lights or vases that are far too low for the height of the space isn’t enough to make any real impact.”

“Carrying the visual language throughout all wedding spaces will ensure everything ties together nicely. While re-using ceremony décor later in the reception space offers you the best value from your venue styling.” – Holly, Ambience Venue Styling Bath https://owenthomasweddings.com for Lauren Alexander Blooms

Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know

TIME TO PARTY We’re looking for a DJ for our upcoming wedding but are feeling overwhelmed by the amount of choice available. What should we do to help narrow down our decision? Looking for your wedding DJ is so much more than trying to find the cheapest deal. This is potentially the biggest day of your lives so you’ll want someone with experience, professionalism and a name you can trust. To narrow down the options it’s worth checking out their website or social media pages where you can find testimonials and be confident that your DJ will be reliable, helpful and keep the dancefloor full and guests entertained through thoughtful planning and preparation beforehand. This way, you may also notice they’ve won some

prestigious awards, which is worth bearing in mind too as they’re often voted for by previous couples as well as by a rigorous judging panel. You should aim to contact your prospective DJ as soon as possible and they should respond in a prompt and timely manner. They should be interested in you right from the word go, finding out what you’d like. In fact, it would be worth arranging a telephone call, Zoom or face-toface appointment. You should expect to find them engaging, offering solutions to your questions, while putting forward suggestions to further enhance your big day. Here at Celebration Roadshow, we’ve just won a national award as best wedding DJs at the Wedding Industry Awards, so you can be confident that your wedding would be in safe hands with us! Phill Makepeace, www.celebrationroadshow.co.uk 55

THE SEARCH IS ON We’re just starting out on our big-day journey and neither of us have a clue what we should look for when booking a venue or what we should be asking. Can you help?

A dessert table is actually quite a good idea if you’re only having a small gathering and don’t want to have lots of cake left over, or indeed if you just can’t decide between the the yummy treats on offer. I’d definitely recommend having a smaller cake for cutting and for the photographs though, even if it’s only one tier. It not only gives the dessert table a focal point, but it provides you with that iconic picture moment. You then need to decide what treats you’d like. There’s so much available from mini bites such as macarons to fully-loaded cupcakes. Cakesicles and doughnuts are also great fun. Ask for a few different flavour options, but not too many – you don’t want to confuse your guests! Also, ask for everything to be themed to fit in with your wedding palette, this way you’ll have a picture-perfect display. Decide how many treats you’d like to provide for each guest and remember, some will eat more than their quota, whereas others will eat less. Depending on what else you have on offer, you should allow for around two to three portions per guest, including cake slices. This will ensure you have plenty to go round. Don’t forget to ask your cake maker how best to keep any leftovers as most can be frozen and enjoyed later. Whatever you choose to do, remember there’s no wrong way to do a dessert table. It’s your day, you do it your way – that’s all that matters. Kerry Hemms, www.angelskitchen.co.uk

PLAY IT AGAIN! We’re looking for entertainment that will keep our guests happy throughout the day. Do you have any suggestions? Live music! Always guaranteed to keep the mood joyful and get your guests tapping their feet or singing along. It can complement any point throughout your special day from pre-wedding ceremony music to setting-the-mood tunes during your drinks reception, or even the often over-looked early evening guest arrival. You don’t have to save it until your evening bash. It also works perfectly alongside other entertainment, such as the background music while a close-up magician performs during a drinks reception or as a live soundtrack of your favourite songs during your wedding breakfast while you eat. What’s more, having some super-funky live tunes playing as guests enjoy visits to the photo booth is another option. Lucy Harvey, www.lucyharvey.co.uk 56

BOX OF DELIGHTS My spouse-to-be and I have decided against a traditional wedding cake and instead are going to have a table full of yummy treats. Do you have any suggestions?

Before you start looking for a venue, think about what sort of wedding celebration you want to have – traditional or relaxed, festival-style; country mansion or village hall; band or disco; sit-down meal or buffet and so on. Budget will also partly determine what you can plan for your guests. Think too about how much you want to be involved in the planning and set up of the venue. Once you’re confident of all of this in your own minds, then you can look for a venue that can deliver on your key points. We see couples who increasingly feel restricted by being forced to use in-house caterers or approved photographers and florists where they’d prefer to think outside the box and do what feel best and most comfortable. Old Bridge offers considerable flexibility, as our couples can choose their own caterers, decorate our beautiful marquee to their liking and bring their own personal flair to their special day. We don’t even offer packages, so you can do as you please. We realise this doesn’t suit everyone, but if you know what sort of day you want, it helps before you start your search for your perfect venue.

“Detachable puff sleeves that fit to your arm like a glove are definitely becoming a thing. Take a look at Essense of Australia’s dress D3296.” – Sarah Hackett, https://rookerybridal.co.uk

Essense of Australia, D3296

“As a bride, you can have whatever you dream of. Bespoke options are something that good designers have offered for a while – adding length to trains, different straps, maybe a corset back, but now there’s a whole range of detachable pieces including capes, trains, sleeves, skirts... The choice is yours and you can transform from princess to goddess in moments.” – Cathy Keen, www.14andsixpence.co.uk Lillian West, 66208 “For the boho bride, there’s lace and plenty of ruffles still to come. Sleeves on these styles are simply wow! Look for soft lace with stunning flutter sleeves extending to the train, as demonstrated in the gown pictured above.” – Sarah, https://rookerybridal.co.uk

“Sleeves can be added off the shoulder for the ultimate romantic look and of course, can be detachable leaving you free for that YMCA moment later in the evening. Balloon or puff sleeves bring a modern edge to the simplest of gowns, bringing back that Regency-era vibe with a twist of Bridgerton.” – Cathy, www.14andsixpence.co.uk

Élysée, Cecile 59

MATERIAL GIRL

Élysée, Etoile Collection, Nathalie “Go soft and floaty with lots of tulle. Options include sheer skirts perfect for a beach wedding and delicate lace panels, which create a super-flattering tattoo effect on the skin.” – Cathy, www.14andsixpence.co.uk

Élysée, FRANÇOISE x Édition “Lace isn’t going anywhere and there’s a huge range of choice out there. Different and more delicate laces are making an entrance. Some boast 3D floral motifs, some a subtle shimmer, and Chantilly lace under a tulle skirt offers a beautiful layered effect with depth. Combine this with a gentle colour, such as champagne or latte to make the pattern pop showing the lace to its full effect.” – Cathy, www.14andsixpence.co.uk 60

TOP TREND MINIMALISM

Paloma Blanca, 5001 “Clean, simple, minimalist styles are now on show in the form of super-chic or fresh and modern looks. Classic materials are making a comeback via these dresses – charmeuse is a dreamy, soft fabric that offers a sophisticated yet minimalist feel.” – Sarah, https://rookerybridal.co.uk

Allison Webb, Easton “We’re seeing a huge rise in the simple-chic look. Think gorgeous fitted crepe gowns with a little lace detail or completely plain satin ball gowns.” – Ellie, www.ellierosebridal.co.uk

Maggie Sottero, Fernanda “This year our bestselling gowns have been simple dresses with minimalistic details in either fitted or A-line silhouettes. Picking a plain gown means you can customise your look easily with bridal accessories to suit your personality, while still having a timeless look.” – Katy, www.krystlebrides.co.uk

Élysée, Delancey “Some of the most beautiful gowns are also the simplest, and plain doesn’t mean boring – especially with thigh-high splits hidden in yards of organza or mikado satin fabric.” – Cathy, www.14andsixpence.co.uk

ALL IN THE DETAIL

TOP TREND GLAMOUR “If it’s glamour you’re seeking, there’ll be more highly embellished gowns coming to the fore – glitter and pure enchantment being key. The princess in you won’t be disappointed! These dresses are being seen in various shapes from ballgown to stunning fit and flares.” – Sarah, https://rookerybridal.co.uk

Lo’adoro by Rachel Allan, M793 “Low backs are very much in fashion. Some offer modesty with sheer illusion tulle covering all the right places, or you may opt for something completely open and edged with sparkle. Another option is a simple cowl back in delicate crepe leading to a sweeping train.” – Cathy, www.14andsixpence.co.uk

Enzoani, Rosalie “There are some showstopping trains this season, whether it be chapel, cathedral or royal, in a circular-style or scalloped and clover-like.” – Cathy, www.14andsixpence.co.uk

“I’ve seen lots of dresses daring to show your leg! The beauty of this trend is that they can be sewn up, shortened or adjusted if it’s not what you want, so don’t be put off.” – Sarah, https://rookerybridal.co.uk “We expect to see plenty of exposed corsetry, sexy cut outs and barely there glamourous gowns in 2023, as well as asymmetric necklines on simple and elegant styles.” – Katy, www.krystlebrides.co.uk

Enzoani, Romana

“We’re already seeing more bows and are expecting to see them on a growing number of dresses – big, small, placed at an angle and really making a statement.” – Sarah, https://rookerybridal.co.uk

Blue by Enzoani, Olani “If you want to be the ultimate princess from dawn ‘til dusk, there are some truly magical styles this season. Shimmering fabric skirts seem to be the key and adding a big hoop to show off a tiny waist, and a long royal train can really make a statement.” – Cathy Keen, www.14andsixpence.co.uk

Q&A Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals

LOOK OF LOVE I love make-up and am always experimenting with new looks and products. So, how do I step it up for my wedding day and make sure I look like me, but a wedding-day version?! Jane Dare, Eyedomakeup (https://eyedomakeup.co.uk), shares her recommendations for a look that’s authentic, beautiful, timeless and real to you: “On your wedding day, you’ll be photograped a lot so you’ll need to wear a little more make-up than usual. It’s important not to worry about other people’s judgements though and try not to be swayed by Photoshopped social media posts. Instead, invest in the right products for you. Consider the time of year, indoor or outdoor photography, the vibe of your wedding and finally enhancement of your natural features. “Your perfect make-up look starts with a new skincare routine. To start makeup application use a good base primer to suit your skin. Smashbox is brilliant for skin with pore damage, also check out Benefit Porefection. Prime eyes too – Urban Decay prevents creasing and makes shadow last all day and night. Next, concealer is key for underneath the eyes and any blemishes. Choose a shade one to two lighter than your foundation. Use waterproof eyeliner and mascara, and apply false lashes to enhance your eye shape, or salon applied for maximum impact in photos. “Choose a long-lasting base – Double Wear from Estée Lauder is fab. Mix it with BB cream or tinted moisturiser for a slightly dewy look. Blending is key so use good clean brushes to create that flawless, natural look. For oily skin, apply a setting powder in the T-zone only. Avoid caking the base, as it won’t look flattering in photos! The best piece of advice I can give is to stay true to skin tone. There’s nothing worse than looking back to see a white neck and orange face! For warmth, opt for a professionally applied spray tan, but avoid the face. “Apply a cream blush, more than you think, on the apples of the cheeks as a white dress can wash you out. Apply soft sculpting contouring to enhance and warm the face in the correct places and add warmth with a matte bronzer if needed. Highlight liberally down the nose, Cupid’s bow and brow to give the skin radiance. “Use a lip stain if lips are dry, alternatively a lippy of choice and matching liner. Press in, blot and apply several times for longevity. Finally, set everything with a good setting spray – Urban Decay is my recommendation.” 78

PUMP UP THE VOLUME I love the big voluminous up dos I’ve seen on Pinterest, but although my hair is long, it’s fine, so I worry this dream is out of my reach! What can you suggest? Victoria Spencer, Tory B Hair (www.torybhair.co.uk), shares some words of wisdom: “It’s absolutely achievable in so my ways depending on how big you want to go. Initially, most people go for clip-in extensions, which offer an easy way to add length and weight. Colour match as near as you can, but don’t worry if there’s a slight variation in shade as once the hair is up this can sometimes add more dimension to the style, which looks great. “If clip-ins aren’t what you’d like, then grab a bun ring from any haircare retailer – an amazingly versatile item for us hair stylists. They come in different sizes, so go large for a showstopping style and make sure you choose a colour nearest to your own. This doesn’t mean you have to have a bun, the ring simply acts as extra padding and also means those pesky pins are sat in the ring and not on your scalp. “Finally, if all that sounds like too much, then reach for the volumising products. Fine hair is light and easy to pin up if you put in some good prep. Curl and set the hair beforehand, not forgetting the heat protection spray, as curls add immediate body. Then, try a hair dusting powder and gentle back-combing to add structure. Next, to hold locks in place, style with a lighthold hairspray and only use the strong-hold version once that’s all in place. “Now, there’s nothing stopping you!”

BEAUTY NEWS

FULL BLAST

There are plenty of hair products out there offering volume and texture, but the problem with these is that they’re formulated with typical texturising ingredients that weigh strands down. What’s more, fine hair in particular comes with its own challenges as it can’t hang on to the added body boost. So, Living Proof decided to step up to the plate and create its new Full Dry Volume & Texture Spay that not only does what it says on the can but also provides flexible hold for even more style-staying power. Perfect for the ultimate bridal updo – use it as your braid aid, messy bun hero or bouncy blowout finisher. £28, available at www.lookfantastic.com

POST-VACAY COMPLEXION

Nail the latest must-have complexion trend, faux freckles with Lottie London Freckle Tint. This favourite hack is now available in a new shade: Deep. HERE COMES THE SUN

We all know that too much sun is damaging to the skin, so to ensure yours is on point for W-day it’s important to protect it. Dr. Hauschka’s new Tinted Face Sun Cream SPF 30 gives the face a radiantly fresh, sun-kissed glow and supports the skin’s natural defences. Using mineral UV filters that act like a mirror, it protects against the force of UV radiation and prevents light-induced skin ageing. This daytime companion is water resistant too and boasts a rich texture to gently pamper. £34, available at www.drhauschka.co.uk

LOVE IS IN THE AIR

Furla continues its fragrance journey with Autentica Eau De Parfum, a beautifully romantic scent. The vibrancy of Italian mandarin together with raspberry and pear create an irresistible opening, while the softness of cherry blossom mingles with the slight spiciness of peony and freshness of lily of the valley. Then comes the secret of Autentica’s character in its base notes of patchouli, musk and cashmere wood creating a comforting sensation. £35 for 30ml, £49 for 50ml, £72 for 100ml, available at www.fenwick.co.uk

Revolutionary U.S. skincare brand goodhabit has recently launched in the UK with a range of products that have effective, naturederived ingredients at their core. Each is created with the same goal of achieving radiant, glowing, healthy skin every day. FINE HAIR LACKING VOLUME Grow Gorgeous Volume Duo (£27), www.growgorgeous.co.uk “After rinsing the products out, my hair was left intensely soft and smooth, and instantly felt like it had more body, even when soaking wet – the Grow Gorgeous Volume Conditioner is the detangler my dreams are made of! I was careful to take my time blow drying, section by section with a barrel brush and was amazed to see that my lifeless, flat hair looked double the thickness and had a bounce to it. I genuinely cannot wait to continue using.” – Beth Morton

DRY AND DAMAGED Naturecan CBD Infused Coconut Shampoo (£16.99) and Conditioner (£16.99), https://uk.naturecan.com “I won’t lie, I’m a bit dubious about products containing CBD as I’ve tried moisturisers with it and honestly can’t tell the difference. However, this shampoo and conditioner surpassed my expectations tenfold. It left my dry and damaged hair looking healthy and glossy after just one wash. I actually said ‘oh my gosh look at my hair!’ as I swished it like I was in a TV advert, and the coconut scent is divine! Tip: you really do have to ‘thoroughly’ massage it into your hair and scalp as directed to get it to lather up.” – Danielle Harvey 83

I feel selfish admitting that I didn’t realise how stressful suit shopping would be for Dave. You

88

always hear about the bride struggling to find the perfect dress, and there’s so much pressure to get it right, but you never really hear the same for the groom-to-be. When we popped into our local suit store a few weeks ago, it surprised me when Dave said he felt stressed trying to make the right decision as he is usually very calm and collected. He tried on a few different styles and colours, but none left him feeling wowed or in his words: ‘like a suit I’m going to get married in’. He came away from that first appointment feeling confused about what to wear and, if anything, a bit deflated. We decided to leave it for a few weeks and then try again. This time we went to a different store that Dave’s brother had used for his wedding. We visited on a weekday, so it was very quiet, and the team gave Dave their undivided attention. Nothing was too much trouble and, within 30 minutes, Dave had found the perfect suit and was grinning from ear to ear. The team helped reassure him about what style suits his shape and what would look good with our sage green colour scheme. He opted for a three-piece blue suit with a grey waistcoat, brown shoes and a sage green tie and pocket square. As Dave wanted to stand out on the day, we hired the same suit but with a blue waistcoat for the groomsmen and our dads to wear. We’re going back soon to get everyone else fitted, and I’m excited to see them all together on the day.

READY, SET, FILM! We were unsure throughout the planning process if we were going to book a

videographer mainly due to our budget. Dave wasn’t keen on the idea after seeing a few highlight films and with a lot of expense at the time, we decided to leave it. So it surprised me when a few weeks ago Dave said he wanted to book one. He’d seen a friend’s recent wedding video and liked the idea of being able to watch the day back. I’m pleased we decided to go for it, and luckily the supplier that we wanted still had availability. We’ve opted for a half-day package, which includes the ceremony, drinks reception and speeches. Although I would have loved to have had everyone getting ready and our first dance on film, it just made more sense for us financially to go for the smaller package. I’m really excited to see how it will turn out and be able to get all our friends and family around to watch it after the wedding. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing my dress alternations, hair and make-up trial and last-minute planning.

can’t believe that this is the penultimate bride’s diary before I walk down the aisle. It’s so strange knowing that in just a few months I will become Mrs Cullen. I know a few of my married friends have chosen to keep their maiden name or hyphenate but for me, taking Dave’s last name was really important. My parents have been together for more than 30 years, but never married. I always hated having a different last name to my mum; so it might sound silly, but I like the idea of our family having one name and I’m really looking forward to sharing that with him (also Twilight is secretly one of my guility pleasures – so the 15-year-old in me is excited to be taking on the Cullen name). In this issue, read all about Dave trying to find the perfect suit and our search for a last-minute videographer.

BRIDE’S DIARY Here are our top tips that we’ve learned during wedding planning:

VENUE

CATERING

❤ Check if you’re allowed confetti. We’re only allowed real petals, and bio-degradable versions aren’t an option. ❤ Find out if you can have sparklers as some venues don’t allow them. ❤ Check whether there are any local taxi companies in the area. If so, pass along the details to your guests.

❤ Ask your supplier if cutlery and linen are included in your quote. ❤ Make sure your supplier caters for all dietary requirements. ❤ Before booking, find out how many options you get to pick for each course.

PHOTOGRAPHER

JEWELLERY

❤ Talk to your photographer about visiting the property before the wedding. We’re planning to meet ours at the venue so he can see where the best photograph opportunities are. ❤ Find out how long your online gallery will be active for. ❤ If you’re feeling anxious near the wedding, get in touch with your photographer. They’ll be able to talk through the day with you to help calm your nerves.

❤ Think about the details on your dress before buying your jewellery. If your gown is heavily beaded, it might be worth choosing simple, understated options. ❤ It can be overwhelming trying to decide what to wear. Talk through options with your wedding party to see what other people suggest. ❤ Pick out key elements of your dress and see if you can complement them with your jewellery.

ALTERNATIONS

CAKE

❤ Before booking your alternations, it’s worth shopping around. I sent ❤ Work out how many guests you’re going to be having and tell your a picture of my dress to five different companies and explained what I cake maker. They will be able to advise how many tiers you need to wanted done, and made my decision based on their quotes. accommodate everyone. ❤ Depending on how intricate your dress is, alterations can take ❤ A lot of cake will be leftover at the end of the night, so purchase cake anywhere from two to eight weeks, so make sure you book your boxes so your guests can take a slice home. appointment early. ❤ Order a sample box so you can try different flavours before making ❤ If you’re nervous about your first fitting, ask one of your bridal party to your final decision. go with you. 89

SOUTH AFRICA

Mantis, a conservation-focused hospitality group with luxury properties located across the globe, has announced the opening of the Founders Railway Carriage at Mantis Founders Lodge in South Africa. Originally built in the 1970s, the carriage is permanently stationed at the top of a hill within Mantis’ private concession. Ideal for honeymoons, the railway carriage features indoor and outdoor dining, lounge areas, and an expansive deck with a private swimming pool. The newly-built Honeymoon Pod was designed to be an escape for couples. Perched above the central lodge, the suite offers unobstructed views of the valley. Romantic services can be arranged including intimate dinners for two and picnics overlooking the waterhole with amazing game drives to view the big five. The railway carriage belongs to conservation pioneer and Mantis founder and chairman, Adrian Gardiner, who tells us: “In 1990 I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to buy a train carriage which I converted into a first-class coach, and I managed to come to an agreement with the railways which enabled me to attach the carriage to the regular passenger services. It has long been my dream to bring the carriage to its very own station. Now others can enjoy it and create their very own personalised holiday adventures for generations to come while experiencing the excitement of sleeping on board a railway carriage.” To find out more, visit www.mantiscollection.com

xperience a luxury escape in the heart of Sherwood Forest at The Sherwood Hideaway at Thorseby. Surrounded by woodland, this selection of luxury lodges and log cabins is an oasis of calm. I stayed with my husband, our two children and dog and it was the perfect opportunity to reconnect after leaving the hustle and bustle of daily life behind us – upon arrival I felt instantly relaxed. Choose to explore and enjoy the range of activities on offer or simply kick back and relax, the choice is yours. CHOOSE YOUR HIDEAWAY With a choice of traditional, rustic and woodland lodges, one, two or three bedrooms and the option of taking your furry friend along to a pet-friendly lodge, there’s something for everyone. We stayed in a Rustic Pet-Friendly lodge and it was gorgeous. Indoors it boasted stylish interiors, modern fixtures and fittings and a cosy log-burner effect fire. We were greeted with a much-welcomed bottle of wine, locally produced fine chocolates and a selection of treats for the pooch – even he didn’t miss out! Outdoors, there’s the added bonus of a private hot tub, barbeque area and decking area looking out into the forest and the lodges are well laid out allowing for ample external space and privacy.

DISCOVER AND EXPLORE Cycling – Take your bikes to explore more of the Thorseby Estate, Sherwood Forest and surrounding areas. Trails are well marked out along road and dirt tracks and they suit all abilities. What’s more, each lodge has its own cycle rack so your bikes can be easily stored. Walking – We took a walk through the estate to Thorseby Hall, the Grade I listed 19th-century country house. The tree-lined paths were easy to follow, and my son and daughter loved delving deep into the woods. The walk took 45 minutes at a steady pace and the coffee and cake in the Thorseby Courtyard, children’s woodland play area and military museum was well worth the stroll.

TIE THE KNOT You can reserve these luxury lodges as accommodation for nuptials at nearby venues or if you’d love a woodland wedding, The Sherwood Hideaway can provide a marquee in which to host your day.

Fishing – If fishing’s your thing, Sherwood Hideaway guests have access to a private members-only fly-fishing lake, approximately 1 mile from the retreat. Falconry – Walk through the woods with the birds of prey or have them visiting the lodge on your own decking area, book a birthday package or take part in a Falconry Day where you’ll learn how to fly and handle hawks, falcons, owls and eagles, as they glide through the treetops. Relaxing – Thorsby Hall Spa is on your doorstep. With its fully equipped gym, indoor pool with jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and range of innovative treatments, why not go and indulge?

A romantic escape Travel editor Melissa Barker reveals why Mauritius is the perfect honeymoon destination

A

fter being stuck in the UK for what feels like a lifetime, I’m sure that I’m not alone in saying that I’d forgotten how exciting travelling could be. I was apprehensive about flying again, but the moment I stepped off the plane in tropical Mauritius and the heat hit me, I felt at ease. Whether you’re after rest and relaxation to recover from the stress of wedding planning or an action-packed adventure, Beachcomber has a resort to suit. With eight properties in Mauritius, each offering something different, the team can tailor-make your holiday across a range of price points. I was lucky enough to visit four of the luxurious hotels during my stay and it was certainly a trip to remember! For those of you who don’t know much about Mauritius, it’s located in the Indian Ocean and is brimming with culture and Instagram-worthy snaps at every turn. Roughly an 11-hour flight from the UK with Air Mauritius, it’s famous for its picturesque beaches, breathtaking lagoons and crystal-clear reefs. The spoken language is English and Mauritian Creole, so you won’t need to worry about translations, and it’s the only known habitat for the now-extinct dodo bird. VICTORIA BEACHCOMBER RESORT & SPA The four-star Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa is situated on the North West coast and is conveniently located between the tourist hub of Grand Baie and the capital city of Port Louis. The sea-facing rooms offer the perfect space to begin your stay in style, with king-sized beds, balconies, walk-in showers, fluffy towels, complimentary toiletries and luxurious baths. Those who want to celebrate married life in privacy can book into the adult-only ‘Victoria for 2’ section. Tranquil and romantic, this area is ideal for those who want to relax in each other’s company while enjoying the on-site amenities.

With access to Mont Choisy Le Golf, an 18-hole golf course located 10 minutes away from the resort, a host of water sports, pools and five restaurants, there’s plenty to see and do during your time here. TROU AUX BICHES BEACHCOMBER The five-star Trou aux Biches Beachcomber is situated on the coast with nearly two kilometres of white sandy beaches and a turquoise lagoon. The villas and beachfront suites have private pools that are built in crescents to create a village-like feel. The villas open out onto large pools, which look glorious first thing in the morning, and the outdoor showers are pure bliss! The resort has large pools in each of the main areas, and with the sea only ever a few minutes away, it’s easy to feel relaxed and stressfree here. With an emphasis on environmental preservation, all the Beachcomber properties are eco-friendly and use environmentally-friendly bottles, reuse water and some have on-site beehives to produce honey. DINAROBIN BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA AND PARADIS BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is a gem for those wanting to get away from it all. This five-star hotel is in the South-West part of the island and shares facilities with Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa. Offering access to the 18-hole par 72 golf course, water sports and eight inviting restaurants (four at each hotel), there is a wide range of accommodation to choose from, and some even come with a private chef and a golf buggy so you can travel around in style. a shuttle service that runs between the two resorts, which is great fun and gives you the freedom to explore without worrying. WINE AND DINE When I think of the food and drink in Mauritius, I immediately think of rum. This tipple is used in several drinks and traditional dishes on the island. One of the most popular is Ti Punch, a rum cocktail that has a real kick to it, especially if you’re a lightweight like me! The Beachcomber properties have a range of restaurants, each serving different cuisines. Nautil Café at Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa has a large lunch menu accomodating even the fussiest of eaters, while Trou aux Biches Beachcomber has six restaurants offering different cuisines from Asia to Mediterranean. At the Mahiya restaurant, you’ll have the opportunity to wear traditional Indian clothes and watch the chef work through the glass window before tasting the delicious Indian cuisine. Finally, Paradis Beachcomber has an incredible seafood restaurant called Marlin. With options to suit all dietary requirements, the staff will go above and beyond to ensure you have everything you need, and the food is amazing – I’m still thinking about the iced nougat weeks later, delish! EXPLORING THE ISLAND There are lots of fun and interesting places to visit while on your honeymoon with Mautourco. The local market at Port Louis is a great way of seeing how the locals live and what produce is on offer. You can grab some souvenirs for the family and help support the community in the process. The Rhumerie de Chamarel is a rum distillery surrounded by tropical gardens that look gorgeous even in the rain. The restaurant is a must-try, especially the rum baba – a soft dessert, almost like a doughnut, that’s been soaked in rum. Take part in a fascinating tour followed by a tasting with all the drinks available to purchase in the gift shop. If you’re heading down South, take the time to visit Chamarel Falls. It’s the highest waterfall in Mauritius, and there are tortoises, monkeys and more natural wonders nearby.

Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa

REST AND RELAXATION The spas at the Beachcomber properties are superb and offer treatments ideal for post-vows R&R. The signature massage includes a sugarcane scrub, which helps remove any dead cells and leaves your skin feeling soft and like new. You can do this together before enjoying a back, leg and neck massage. One of the stand out things that Beachcomber offer is yoga by the beach. A great way to relax and rejuvenate, the teachers are very knowledgeable and will show you breathing techniques and stretches to help with your day-to-day lives when you finally return home. FUN IN THE SUN The activities available across the Beachcomber properties are ideal for those who want to learn a skill or try something new. The expert team will be able to accommodate all abilities and help you try water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, snorkelling, pedal boats, tennis or wakeboarding. As part of the honeymoon package, you’ll receive champagne or sparkling wine in your room and a choice of one Beachcomber experience, such as a massage, a boat cruise, wine tasting, a cooking class, horseback riding or an introduction to scuba diving. I’d recommend the sunset boat cruise, where you enjoy a glass of bubbly while taking in the coastal sights at the most beautiful and romantic time of day. HONEYMOON BLISS If you’re looking for an adventure, a relaxing beach stay or a familymoon, Mauritius is the perfect destination. There’s plenty to see and do around the island, and the Beachcomber resorts will leave you feeling like royalty. I truly loved my time in Mauritius, so much so I don’t think my hubby-to-be will need much convincing to consider our own honeymoon there!
