LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Once the important things like budget and rough idea of guest numbers have been decided, we recommend you start with booking your venue. This issue we bring you a selection of stunners in East Cheshire, as well as a look at the region’s hotel venues. If these don’t work for you though, check out our venue inspiration page over at www.yourcheshiremerseyside.wedding

PAWTASTIC!

When putting your guest list together there might be one particular loved one you hesitate about, but there’s no need. Don’t miss our guide to pets at weddings to find out how you can include your darling fur baby in your nuptials, worry free.

WOW THE CROWDS

Don’t leave your wedding entertainment until the last minute, particularly if there’s a particular musician, band or DJ you have your hearts set on. Chances are they’ll be just as popular amongst other couples and their diaries fill up fast.

FINISHING TOUCHES

If you’ve got any pennies in the pot by the time you’ve booked the essentials, don’t forget to seek out those fabulous finishing touches. I love this bespoke cake topper by La Fille Creative.

SNAP IT UP

So the venue is secured, the date is set, now you can start assembling the rest of your W-day team. Your photographer will be high on the agenda as these talented folk get booked up in a flash. Check out our Freebies & Offers page where you’ll find a fabulous offer from Kevin Brown Photography

ACCESSORISE AND SHINE

Now you have the dress, it’s time to shop for accessories. We know it’s tempting, but try to wait until you’ve chosen your gown as it’s so much easier to fit the accessories around the attire rather than the other way around. Trust us!

GOING FOR GREEN

Booker Flowers and Gifts, based in Mossley Hill, Liverpool, is proud to have won the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce Innovation in Business Award for Responsible Business Environment 2022. A recognition of the continued work it’s doing to reduce the environmental impact of its business.

The florist was also awarded the Environmental and Climate award in 2021. To have won for a second year recognises the work the team are doing from year to year, examining each area of the business to make continued improvements. Owner Gemma Wakerley says, “We’ve been on a journey since 2015 to work in the most sustainable way possible, taking into account environmental and socio-economic factors. I’m pleased to see that such awards are now commonplace in the business community. This can only serve to increase what we’re all doing to help preserve the world we live in. At Booker Flowers and Gifts being eco-friendly, community-minded and buying responsibly is part of what we do, and to be recognised for this fills us with pride.”

Since winning the award in 2021 Gemma and her team have continued to introduce measures to reduce their carbon footprint and environmental impact, such as going paperless and starting to compost green waste. When asked about what businesses can do to be greener Gemma told us, “Going green is about making small, easy changes and building from there. I’m delighted that now green issues are on the agenda for government as it’s a lot easier to access help and support. Over the last year I’ve worked with a Liverpool John Moores University student to help develop a system that has allowed the shop to go paperless while improving productivity and customer service. The student is now able to take this system to market, so it will help other florists as well. We have more plans to carry on this sustainable path, so watch this space!”

PEAR TREE FARM 01565 631 838 | www.pear-tree-farm.org

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Pear Tree Farm is a charming country cottage standing in landscaped gardens and fields extending around nine acres. A small and private retreat for intimate and bespoke two-or-a-few weddings, its speciality is elopement and micro nuptials. Located in the heart of the open Cheshire countryside, a five-minute drive from Knutsford and 10 minutes away from the motorway, the venue is easy to access.

GORGEOUS GROUNDS

The large landscaped garden has several areas providing plenty of photo opportunities: a dedicated rose garden, a parterre, and a clematiscovered tunnel leading down to a duck pond, complete with decking and a trickling waterfall. The summer house can be found next to a small orchard home to a variety of fruit trees, including, of course, several pear trees. There are also nine acres of fields to explore, along with a small paddock with seating area and firepit beneath the stars.

TYING THE KNOT

There are a selection of delightful, intimate ceremony areas available here. The Summer House sits in the gardens in the lee of an old weeping willow. The Paddock Ceremony area is set in a dip at the bottom of the

small secluded paddock, a hidden seating area under the trees complete with twinkling lights. Finally, The Gold Room inside the house has beautiful hand-painted walls and an intricately painted ceiling. The room is furnished with antiques, including several grandfather clocks and a baby grand piano. The windows are dressed with sumptuous silk and velvet drapes and the stone open fireplace with crackling fire makes the perfect place for a secret winter wedding. All three spaces can host 16 nearest and dearest.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE

Receptions take place in the Diamond Dining Room, so named because of its gold and cream diamond-design ceiling. The décor features a rich, deep burgundy and gold palette reminiscent of grand old theatres The table will comfortably seat 14 or a cosy 16. What’s more, the venue works with an excellent chef, who will come to the house to prepare, cook and serve a tailor-made menu.

A PLACE TO REST YOUR HEAD

There are two exquisite en-suite guest bedrooms, with four-poster and canopied beds, bespoke hand-painted walls and ceiling, luxurious silks, voiles and velvet soft furnishings for you and two guests to enjoy. Vicky and James styled their day with a touch of Mediterranean magic Images

Vicky and James met through their best friends. Maid-of-honour Poppy met her true love, Mike, many years ago and he’s best friends with James. The pair knew they’d be perfect for each other and how right they were. Vicky says, “As soon as we met that was just it for the both of us. We have the same daft sense of humour and we’re not afraid to be ourselves.”

James proposed in Paris just before the first national lockdown in 2020. They went out to explore the city of love their first evening there and when they got back to the hotel after enjoying a night of champagne, James got down on one knee. “It was so intimate, so perfect, but he was so nervous he asked me to be his husband,” Vicky laughs.

Speaking of their chosen venue, Peckforton Castle, Vicky says, “Well, what wouldn’t attract you to such an amazing venue?” She’d been a bridesmaid there and had dreamed of one day getting married at the venue herself one day. Without viewing any others she took James along and he fell instantly and equally in love with it. “The Great Hall has the most beautiful aisle, it really was a dream come true to walk down it,” Vicky remembers.

Join us as the bride shares her memories of their magical wedding day, 25th March 2022...

SETTING THE SCENE

Vicky’s favourite colour is lemon yellow, which formed the inspiration and palette base for the wedding’s theme. Her favourite flowers are yellow roses, which were also loved by her grandma who sadly passed away before the big day, so Vicky was determined to incorporate them in her memory. Such a sunny palette was also the perfect choice for their early summer date.

The bride tells us more: “I started looking at yellow mood boards on Pinterest for inspiration and when I saw one with splashes of blue in it, I was in love.” So, the couple’s florist included small touches of blue in the bouquets with thistles, alongside yellow and white roses. “She did a gorgeous job,” Vicky shares.

The aisle in the Great Hall that the bride had fallen head over heels for was the part she really wanted to showcase, and was looking for something out of the ordinary that would fit the colour scheme. She chose lemon trees and the Italian theme blossomed from there. “Our venue stylist, Thornton Events, really went above and beyond for us. The team sourced the lemon trees especially for us and I can’t thank them enough. They spent hours on the phone with me talking through my dream aisle.” The end result was showstopping, featuring four lemon trees with candles hanging from them to create a beautiful romantic setting. White and yellow petals lined the aisle with floating candles and green garlands adorning the signing table. Pea lights added the perfect finishing touch to the back for a warm, romantic glow.

LOOKING THE PART

Vicky’s gorgeous dress was actually a combination of two Enzoani gowns. She explains, “The neckline on Odette suited me better but I was in love with the long sparkly train on Nina, so I bought the latter and had flowers sewn onto the neckline with off-the-shoulder sleeves.”

The bride wore her mum’s diamond earrings (something borrowed) and a family heirloom emerald trilogy ring (something old). She wore her hair up with a gorgeous accessory to show off her veil, which was a single layer with touches of sparkle running through it. She then switched up her look for the evening, taking her hair down for a more relaxed and refreshed look. “My hair and make-up artists were honestly amazing, they were on hand all day if I needed a touch up, and they were such a

laugh. I can’t recommend them enough.”

The groom wore the same blue suit as his groomsmen. But while he accessorised with an ivory paisley waistcoat and tie to make him stand out, they wore grey waistcoats with blue ties. “The groomsmen looked so handsome and the colours matched perfectly with the bridesmaids’ dresses and bouquets,” Vicky says.

The bride tribe were dressed in dusky blue dresses from ChiChi London. There was a bow attachment to the side, which pulled in at the waist and suited all heights. “They looked stunning,” Vicky remembers. The maid-of-honour wore a sparkly blue dress allowing her to stand out and the flowergirl had the same silky blue dress as the bridesmaids on the top half with a tutu on the bottom.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

As they’d decided to book Your Singing Waiters to entertain during the wedding breakfast the newlyweds opted to have the speeches before the food. “We were naughty and went for the most awkward scenario they offered,” Vicky tells us. They were present for the whole food service and assumed the roles of a member of waiting staff on her first day and the head waiter watching over her. As he worked the room he made remarks to his new staff member and the bride and groom could see their nearest and dearest falling for the act more and more with each course. Then, after dessert, things reached a climax when the trainee dropped something and the double act had a blazing row right in front of the top table before storming off. “People’s faces were a picture when the two came back singing and they realised they’d been fooled! Everyone was up dancing and singing – Your Singing Waiters were brilliant. I would highly recommend them,” Vicky shares.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“We were both so nervous,” Vicky remembers. “People tell you to take it all in, but it feels impossible on the day. We both wish we were less affected by nerves, but they didn’t spoil the day, it was magical. We took time out just the two of us and went for a walk around the castle. It was lovely to have a moment of peace away from the madness of it all. The best moment though was definitely when we first laid eyes on each other at opposite ends of the aisle.

A special thanks goes out to The Tall Toastmaster. “He really helped to make our day extra special and helped to organise us with regards timing. He made us feel so at ease on the day, we can’t thank him enough.”

THE PERFECT GETAWAY

The newlyweds headed to Whatley Manor in the Cotswolds for a mini-moon break straight after the wedding to wind down, and spent their main honeymoon in St Lucia. “It was nice to wait as it gave us something to look forward to after the postwedding blues had kicked in,” Vicky says.

“Make sure you get hold of some canapés before they all go or you’ll miss out while you’re having your pictures taken.”

Isabella and Samuel met while working on a hospital ward. Despite a mutual attraction they started out as friends, but it didn’t take too long for the relationship to blossom into something more. Samuel proposed on a trip to Dublin. On the Ha’Penny Bridge, a spot they’d visited on their first mini-break together, he got down on one knee. Isabella remembers, “It was the middle of winter and blowing a gale, but I couldn’t stop laughing with excitement. Of course I said, ‘Yes!’”

The couple visited Delamere Manor along with a few other

venues, but this was by far their favourite thanks to the incredible views, greenery and grounds. “We loved the idea of getting married outside surrounded by nature and this was the most perfect and serene spot for our dream wedding day. Not to mention how welcoming and lovely the staff were, which made the experience of visiting the venue spectacular,” Isabella explains.

So, the date was set for 28th July, 2022, and here the brides tells us more about that special day..

39 REAL WEDDINGS

We visited Boujee Boxes at an open day and we instantly loved the classic theme of white flowers and candles to set the scene for our big day, so that’s what we chose. They also provided a flower arch to set the scene for our outdoor wedding, which looked beautiful in the pictures.

The most memorable part of the day was walking down the aisle and greeting each other while one of our favourite songs played in the background. Saying the vows and becoming husband and wife was the highlight.

I wore a Tara Lauren gown, with a removable skirt and veil giving me the option of two looks for our day. I chose a cathedral-length train because what girl doesn’t want to look like a princess?

Samuel wore a black velour tuxedo, which stood out from the groomsmen’s classic tux. Groom in Liverpool were able to provide him with a beautiful jacket, which he’ll keep forever.

The bridesmaids wore a green Grecian-style bridesmaid dress in a pale sage green complementing our neutral colour palette.

40

We both felt so excited and emotional throughout. We couldn’t believe our big day had finally arrived and we wanted nothing more than to become husband and wife with our daughter there, who was 10 months old at the time.

We attended a menu-tasting evening at Delamere Manor and chose three courses for our guests. We selected dishes that we’d enjoy on a regular meal out, after all, it was our big day! The wedding breakfast was finished with chocolate cheesecake and an endless supply of hot deli sandwiches in the evening.

Our cake was a classic four-tier bake in keeping with the white theme, decorated with fresh flowers.

We had all of our favourite music playing when the guests arrived, followed by a live singer who performed some mash-ups to get the party started in the evening.

We wanted to choose little things guests could keep for our favours, such as a bottle opener for the guys and perfume for the ladies.
41 REAL WEDDINGS

For our honeymoon we planned a family holiday to Rhodes in Greece with our daughter. It will be her first holiday with us.

W-DAY

Our photographer, Ryan, supplied most of the laughs and really became part of the wedding party, getting involved and making our day special. We thoroughly enjoyed driving round and exploring in a golf buggy while he took some couple shots.

AND SIMPLEPure

Rachel and Jack said “I do” in October 2022 and opted for delicate styling touches to let the beauty of their venue speak for

itself

Images courtesy of Kevin Brown Photography

When Rachel moved to Liverpool to work, her first port of call was to find a Thai boxing gym so she could keep up her favourite hobby. She found one quickly and it also offered CrossFit classes. Although she originally had no intention of lifting weights, she decided to give it a go nonetheless – in for a penny in for a pound! It’s a good job she did, as it was there she spotted Jack across a crowded gym. Despite clocking each other they didn’t talk until a gym Christmas night out and they hit it off right away.

The couple knew early on in their relationship that they wanted to be together forever, so after one year they moved in together and after two years Jack proposed. He’d planned a super-romantic trip to Rome for them both, but sadly Covid struck and not wanting to delay his all-important question, he quickly set about changing his plans. So, while Rachel was out one night, he created a romantic atmosphere at home with fairylights and candles leading her into the living room upon her return, and it was there she found Jack waiting on one knee to propose with a beautiful diamond ring.

Rachel and Jack had a rough start to their wedding planning when Rachel’s beloved father was diagnosed with cancer and given just months to live. Naturally keen for her father to share as many special moments with them as possible they chose The Isla Gladstone for their venue as he’d often commented on what a beautiful place it was having passed it many a time on walks through Stanley Park with his daughter. “It was the obvious place for us to choose because it reminded us of happy times with my dad and he could picture how the day would be with it being so familiar to him,” Rachel shares.

So, the date was set for 7th October, 2022, and here the brides tells us all about it...

45 REAL WEDDINGS

My dress was fitted at the top, covered in embellishment with a flowing skirt that sparkled and looked very elegant. It was in the sale too, which was a bonus!

Jack wore a Milano suit in royal blue, his favourite colour. The lady in the hire shop made a suggestion to pair it with a grey tweed waistcoat. He was unsure at first, but when he tried it on it brought the outfit together. His groomsmen had matching suits, but paired theirs with a blue waistcoat.

Our flowers were our favourite styling element on the day. The bouquets were white and blue to fit our palette. The men’s buttonholes had Everton charms inside since Jack is a massive fan and my bouquet bore a charm of my father so he could be with me when I walked down the aisle.

The bridesmaids wore royal blue, multiway dresses allowing them to wear it in whichever design they preferred. They all looked amazing, showing off their own unique senses of style.

– Rachel

The venue was already beautiful, so we made sure not to crowd the room, keeping to a simple style with delicate touches throughout.

For our wedding favours we made up little Mason jars with two sweets inside, one an Everton toffee to represent Jack, a scouser and a blue; and a Bournville chocolate representing my Birmingham roots. These were labelled for each guest and doubled up as place names.

“I did a lot of researching beforehand, taking pictures and saving to an album to give me inspiration of things we could do for our day.”
46

Centrepieces were a mix of hearts and orbs made from white flowers with our initials in the centre. We chose these as they stood out but also had a delicate touch.

In keeping with our clean and modest theme we chose a naked bake by a local baker. It was decorated with a Mr & Mrs topper with matching cupcakes surrounding its three tiers.

We had a sweet cart, selfie mirror and outdoor games such as beer pong and giant Jenga to keep everyone entertained.

The groom was a little nervous about his best men’s speeches as they’d teased him about stories they’d tell, but on the day they had nothing but praise for us both with a touch of comedy to entertain our guests.

All of our suppliers were incredible. Our photographers Kevin and Carole were phenomenal. Getting our family organised for the pictures was a hard task, but they had the right amount of assertiveness and humour to get everyone in place!

As ours was an October wedding it got a bit chilly in the evening, so Jack’s mother bought me a white fur bolero jacket to keep me warm.

47 REAL WEDDINGS

The groom was in charge of sorting the entertainment. He’s really into his music so we had a local lad playing his acoustic guitar during the day while we were off having our photos taken.

For the evening, we hired a live band called The Drive, they were amazing, it felt like we were at a gig. They played mixture of indie rock and popular mainstream songs while the DJ covered the classic party playlist.

We loved seeing our families mingle given the variety of ages and backgrounds. It was wonderful to see them playing beer pong and taking their photos at the selfie mirror.

Every part of the venue looked beautiful, especially when it transitioned from the sunny daytime to picturesque nighttime ambience.

We went to Gran Canaria on honeymoon and stayed in adultonly hotel, Marina Bayview. We really enjoyed the break and planned some lovely days out from boat trips to parasailing.

A PLACE IN THE COUNTRY

Drama, elegance, glamour, whimsy... this local styled shoot has it all Images courtesy of Jaine Briscoe-Price Photography and Lauren Hollamby Photography

The beautiful and impressive Dorfold Hall in Nantwich is wrapped in a long, dramatic, tree-lined drive, with rich red leaves adorning the front balustrade. Inspired by the venue’s natural palette, photographers Jaine Briscoe-Price and Lauren Hollamby agreed on a country gentry vibe with a mythical edge. So, their model brides mounted their trusty steeds in showstopping, hand-painted ivory gowns and prepared to ride off into the sunset.

The Giraffe Shed is a venue like no other,” says shoot coordinator Daljeet Hewitt from At Home Bakes. “So, I knew that whatever we did with it, it had to be something never been done before!” Settling on a bold, contrasting palette of black and pink, the team worked together to bring a chic and moody, yet romantic feel to the resulting images. The juxtaposition of the soft, dreamy wedding dress against the dramatic black gown makes everything pop and we love it! 57

WE LOVE

Our top 10 ideas for keeping your wedding guests entertained

to boogie

1 VOCALIST

Cheshire-based Lee Gordon is a singer/songwriter with years of experience playing, writing, recording and touring all over the country to rave reviews. He is now also one of the most sought-after musicians and singers in the UK for weddings. Since starting out in the wedding industry in 2019, he has sung, played and DJed at over 300 big days, winning national awards along the way thanks to the five-star reviews from his clients. He can also list amongst his achievements BBC Radio 2 songwriter of the year finalist.

Lee offers a wide range of music for weddings including acoustic

ceremony sets and upbeat acoustic vibes for your drinks reception. For the evening bash you have the choice of two packages. The standard version features a floor-filling selection of foot-stomping acoustic songs including loop pedal and stomp box creating a mini one man band. Alternatively, you could go for the deluxe option with the rip-roaring One Man Band experience featuring state of the art sound and lighting with live looping guitars and digital drums. Both options are inclusive of Lee’s professional DJ service. For further information, head over to www.leegordonmusic.com

TOP TIP

“You may be tempted to save money by having the venue play the ceremony music over their sound system, but don’t! As great as venues are there’s more to a quality moment than hitting stop and start on a Spotify track – I’ve never seen it go well. What could be more special than walking down the aisle to an arrangement of your favourite song done just for you?” – Lee Gordon

2 PHOTO BOOTH

From standard photo booths, to selfie mirrors and even boomerang booths the wedding market well and truly has it covered when it comes to letting guests in on the photography action. All provide prints for loved ones to take home and treasure and many offer guest books so you can get copies to laugh about later too! Check out www.cheshirecelebrations.co.uk

3 FIREWORKS

Fireworks will literally wow the crowds at your wedding as your guests “ooh” and “ahh” at the display. Be sure to leave it to the professionals and you won’t be disappointed. Different packages are usually available to fit around your budget. Just be sure to check with your venue first, in case they don’t permit fireworks.

ENTERTAINMENT 61

We’d definitely recommend investing in a DJ rather than attempting to fill the dancefloor with your Spotify playlist. These folks have years of experience and not only do they know exactly what to play when, they can create the atmosphere you’re looking for during your big bash.

6 LIVE BAND

5 MAGICIAN

It’s easy to avoid the awkward lull in proceedings while you scamper off for your photos when a magician is on hand. Brilliant at breaking the ice, a magician will have your guests enthralled and chatting as though they’ve known each other for years thanks to their exciting shared experience. Check out www.aaronhayes.co.uk

Whatever your style there’s a band out there for you. Experienced musicians are adept at judging the vibe on the dancefloor, making sure they keep those dancing feet busy all night. Many will learn that special first dance song for you at your request and some offer super-flexible options to bring you suitable entertainment from low key drinks reception music to full-scale floor-fillers in the evening. Our golden rule? Make sure you get to a live gig to see what they can do before you book. It’s well worth seeing what’s out there.

7 SINGING WAITERS

The looks on your guests’ faces will be priceless and worthy of tagging when singing waiters are in town. #Awks turns into joy, laughter and delight in a heartbeat. Check out https://singingwaitersintheuk.com

8 SAXOPHONIST

Strike a laid-back Ibiza party note with a live saxophonist to accompany your DJ on the dancefloor. Mingling with guests, that edge of interactive excitement will truly create the wedding wow factor. Check out https://apresmusic.com

10 STRING QUARTET

Most of us have been Bridgerton obsessed since it hit our screens, and it’s easy to recreate that oh-so romantic Georgian atmosphere with a string quartet. While the show’s innovative soundtrack of modern hits makes it a standout, this is something modern day string musicians have been doing forever. Check out www.adagiostrings.co.uk

9 HARPIST

Nothing beats the sound of a harp for oh-so romantic ceremony music. Gentle and melodic, it sets just the right tone as you prepare to walk down the aisle. A harpist is also wonderful to bring an air of class to the drinks reception –you’ll be surprised at how good this instrument makes the Disney greats sound! Check out www.weddingharp.co.uk

2023 TRENDS SPECIAL

CANDID CAMERA

Karen and Andrew Boyle of Andy Boyle Photography (www.andyboylephotography.com) say: As we all get back to normal, many couples appreciate the opportunity to have their wedding day exactly as they want it. Some are opting for an all-out approach with everything they’ve ever dreamed of, while for others a more intimate affair is appealing.

A photographer who listens carefully to your plans and ideas is a great place to start. Chatting about yourselves, your hopes and maybe some

VALUE IS KEY

concerns about being in front of the camera will help you to be more relaxed and enjoy all aspects of the day you’ve planned so carefully. Whether you’ve chosen to marry in a castle, at your local village hall or anywhere in between, your photographer will find the best aspects for your first photos as a married couple, creating something special just for you. As we all know, most of us are at our most relaxed when we’re not posing, so your photographer’s ability to get on with your guests and capture the unscripted moments you probably don’t see yourself creates some of the very best memories immortalised forever.

AL FRESCO “I DOS”

Laura and Steve at Churchtown Wedding Cars (www.churchtownweddingcars.co.uk) say: Trends are always difficult to predict especially with wedding cars. Whether it’s traditional, boho, sports or limousine, there’s so much choice these days. One thing we’re sure of however, is that whatever style of wedding car you choose, you’ll want excellent customer service, reliability and definitely better value for money, especially in the current climate.

Like all other transport companies, we thrive on recommendations from previous happy couples and as well as our amazing five-star reviews. From our first point of contact with our customers to meeting and choosing their cars and discussing plans for the big day, right up to the ceremony arrival, we hope to provide a service that’s second to none, ensuring your journey to the altar is a memorable one. On the big day itself we manage to stirke the perfect balance of slipping into the background, while being right there to help wherever needed, every step of the way.

Michelle Stubbs at Delamere Manor (https://delameremanor.co.uk) says: In 2023, we’re expecting to see more outdoor ceremonies. With the relaxation of wedding laws in England and Wales, couples are no longer required to marry beneath a permanent structure in a preregistered wedding venue, but are now permitted to hold their ceremony anywhere within the grounds of their licensed venue. So, we’re anticipating a lot of bookings for our surrounding 117acre grounds.

When it comes to new wedding trends, we’re expecting to see a lot of mirrored aisles in the new year. They really are a beautiful addition to any wedding ceremony and reflect all the beautiful surroundings and scenery.

Don’t be surprised to see a lot of outfit changes from the bride too, as wedding wardrobes are also in for 2023. Hugely popular on TikTok, we can expect a fully-planned set of outfits taking us right from the engagement party right through to the honeymoon.

HOT TOPIC

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Matthew Fitzpatrick at Fitzpatrick Photography (https://fitzpatrickphotography.co.uk) says: “If we’re honest, most of us hate having our photos taken unless it’s selfies with friends, of course! But when it comes to paying someone professionally, most of us shudder at the idea and struggle to feel at our natural best. So, with more couples looking for less traditional photography, instead wanting their wedding story to be documented, how do you learn to be relaxed in front of the camera?

While the idea of an engagement shoot isn’t new, how they are structured is changing, causing even the most camera-shy to look again. When working with our couples, we typically set aside a three-hour time slot for a session, giving them plenty of time to relax without any time pressure. It enables us to walk, talk and take in different backdrops. It allows couples to find out what works for them and discover how they feel most comfortable being photographed. In the end, even the most camera-shy are surprised by how much fun they had.

It’s only natural to feel anxious in the run up to the wedding, but getting to know your suppliers, especially those you’ll spend a lot of time with, can genuinely help. Understanding how they’re going to work removes the fear of the unknown meaning you can relax and enjoy the day more.

ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME EXPERIENCES

Peter Henney from Go Cruise and Travel (anneandpeter@gocruiseandtravel.co.uk) says: Since the pandemic couples have been re-thinking their honeymoon experience. Some may have more savings, while others are booking well in advance to be able to achieve their dream. Honeymoon planning now is different. Financing can be achieved by various flexible funding methods, such as the honeymoon fund we offer at Go Cruise and Travel, whereby you ask guests to contribute to this rather than having a standard guest list.

In terms of the type of honeymoon couples are looking for, the current trend appears to be booking experiences whether they be on sea or land. These fashions are greatly influenced by healthy lifestyles and environmental awareness. Such trips include expedition cruises to the Arctic or Antarctic, experiencing the natural beauty and wildlife; or expedition ships that have facilities such as submersibles, helicopters and zodiacs for guests to maximise their time.

Safaris, where honeymooners can see wildlife in their natural habitat as they fly over in a hot air balloon or travel by jeep before sleeping under the stars in a luxury lodge, are now truly affordable. What’s more, places that were once only dreamed about such as Japan, South America, Asia and the South Pacific are now more widely accessible and affordable, and are popular spots for enjoying cultural engagement. These holidays all come with expert guides with exceptional local knowledge.

TAILORED TO YOU

Celebrant Gill Collins (www.gillcollinsceremonies.co.uk) says: I find that couples really want the emphasis of their ceremony to be totally specific to them, as well as a day that everyone will remember as theirs, not one that’s the same as any other wedding guests may have attended. Indeed, there seems to be an increased interest in celebrant-led ceremonies outdoors, at locations that have special meaning for them as a couple. For example, I’ve recently taken bookings to conduct ceremonies in couples’ own homes.

There’s also been a big interest in having animals involved, the family dog being a big hit as bridesmaid or ring bearer! A major benefit of having celebrant-led “I dos” is that in addition to writing a bespoke ceremony, we can accommodate couples’ individual requirements and requests, resulting in a unique, special and memorable experience.

ESPECIALLY FOR YOU

Natalie Goudge from La Fille Creative (www.lafillecreative.com) says: A wedding is the perfect occasion to showcase your uniqueness as a couple, as well as your love story. More and more, I see couples wanting to add personalised finishing touches to their wedding decorations, both as a way to stand out from the crowd and to keep forever as a memory of their special day. There are lots of elegant ways this can be achieved on the day ranging from our beautiful customised wedding cake toppers, to personalised reception signage to show off your sense of humour.

Personalising your wedding doesn’t have to be limited to the big day either; the lead up to the event is a great way to add a personal flair. Go for monogrammed save-the-dates in your style or bridesmaid proposals and gifts they won’t forget.

It’s in these small details that couples are able to really express their personalities and style to make a wedding day that’s truly unique. Why not create day that’s designed especially for you?

GREEN FINGERS

Nathalie Somerset from Somerset Blooms (https://somersetblooms.co.uk) says: With the sustainable floristry movement growing, couples are more aware of seasonal florals and working with the time of year to create designs to express their style and personality. Locally-grown flowers ensure freshness and quality while sustainable designs open up endless options for how couples can utilise their flowers on the day, which don’t come at a cost to the planet. With floral trends inspired by celebrity weddings, I anticipate a demand for largescale designs such as those seen at Pixie Lott’s, and Nicola and Brooklyn Beckham’s big days, which exhibited beauty, grandeur and sustainability.

With Covid pushing weddings back, couples are now making statements with bold colours in their floral designs. So, I’m expecting to see bright seasonal florals such as coral peonies, blue delphiniums, dahlias, tulips, agapanthus and sweet peas to trend in 2023. Each season carries its own individual beauty, scent and colour palette to work with while still leaving room for couples to exhibit their individuality.

Based on recent requests for 2023 I’m also seeing a shift from traditional, round posy-style bouquets to hand-tied versions with an emphasis on foliage such as eucalyptus and populus for a freshly-picked feel.

SMALL AND PERFECTLY FORMED

Rachel Leon, weddings and events manager at The Manor, Greasby (www.themanorgreasby.co.uk) says: While the heritage and tradition of the classic big white wedding is going nowhere for plenty of couples in 2023, many are broadening their horizons and envision more informal celebrations such as wedding dinners, activities and parties, versus the traditional, formal reception. In terms of the “I dos,” we’re seeing a rise in elopements, putting the couple and their vows at the centre of the occasion before joining families together to celebrate afterwards.

While pandemic weddings may be a thing of the past, we’re still seeing couples retaining the intimacy of smaller celebrations and even microweddings. The average number of guests has dropped post-pandemic, indicating that close-knit celebrations are in favour.

We’re also seeing couples approach their big day with a great consciousness for sustainability. Waste-reducing ideas such as wedding dress rental, embracing vintage bridal attire and jewellery, renting key décor elements and utilising eco-friendly dried flowers are all fantastic ways to minimise your wedding-day wastage. Plus, sourcing close to home for wedding services and suppliers not only aids the environment but gives your big day its own local character.

Pssst... The Manor at Greasby, on the Wirral, will open in February, with The Barn at the Manor available for 2023 wedding bookings.

The ultimate A-Z guide to wedding-dress shopping

A

IS FOR ALTERATIONS

Once you’ve ordered your dream dress you’ll need to start looking for a seamstress to do your alterations. Even though you’ve ordered your size, chances are it’ll still need a little tweak here and there as dresses fit everyone differently.

CIS FOR CATWALK

We always advise newly-engaged couples to hit the wedding shows as soon as possible. It’s the best way to meet suppliers and assemble your W-day team. While you’re there, be sure to experience a catwalk show. It’ll help you find dress inspiration from silhouettes, to fabrics and designers; as well as guiding you towards a boutique you might want to make an appointment with.

BIS FOR BODY BEAUTIFUL

When it comes to knowing what’s best for you and your body, Ali Hamilton at Blue & Sixpence Bridal (www.blueandsixpence.co.uk) in Liverpool as some words of wisdom: “As women we should dress for ourselves, and wear whatever makes us feel good, expressing our individual personalities and identities. When a bride attends her appointment we spend the first 20 minutes getting to know them, and in doing this I’ve discovered that most women have some sort of body issue, regardless of their size or shape. But we need to stop comparing ourselves to the airbrushed images we’re subjected to in the media and embrace our differences. There are ways to create shape, silhouette and style without compromising on individuality.

“If you have concerns about a particular area, chat with someone who understands and can advise without judging. Choose a bridal boutique and consultant who'll listen, guide, suggest and encourage. One that provides plenty of choice allowing you to explore all your options in a warm, welcoming environment.” Blue & Sixpence stocks around 450 gowns in size 6 to 36.

DIS FOR DIARY

Hanni Frankland at My Funny Valentine Bridal (https://mfvbridal.com) in Chester advises that you arrive at your appointment with some ideas of dresses you like, “Although we do suggest you keep an open mind too!”

“If possible, wear nude underwear and ideally a strapless bra if you have one, as underwear can make all the difference,” she continues. “Many stores have heels you can borrow, but just in case we’d advise to bring your own to give you that full bridal look. Do avoid wearing fake tan though as this may stain the dresses, but be sure to do your hair and make-up the way you feel best as this always helps with confidence. Above all, have fun, try not to overthink, relax and go with your gut!”

FIS FOR FABRIC

EIS FOR ENTOURAGE

Heather Laver from The Bridal Lounge (https://thebridallounge.co.uk) tells us, “Bring people you can trust to give you an honest answer. Bringing the entire bridal party can be fun, but it can also be overwhelming, and you might find your own thoughts about the dresses are lost in the babble going on around you. Sometimes, an intimate appointment with just yourself, or one trusted friend or family member is better than lots of people who end up making the choice harder.”

Ali says, “It’s a good idea to consider the fabric of a gown in conjunction with your venue type. For example, a lightweight, chiffon gown might seem ideal for an August wedding, but if you’re tying the knot in a stately home, it’s likely to look rather underwhelming. For that reason, we always advise our brides to wait until they’ve secured their venue before shopping for the dress.

“Generally, more heavy-weight fabrics, such as satins and Mikado, create architectural, sculptural shapes, which can work well in the colder months. They also complement opulent surroundings. Lighter fabrics such as silk and slipper satins evoke sumptuous, luxurious textures ideal for grand venues, and are more suitable for summer. Chiffons meanwhile create soft, romantic silhouettes and are often the go-to fabric of many a boho bride regardless of the time of year as they blend well with the theme and setting.”

IS FOR GOWNS

There are so many silhouettes and styles to choose from, so start by having a look in your own wardrobe to see what vibe you usually veer towards for a special occasion or that you know feels comfortable. If you’re not used to something fitted, your wedding day might not be the time to try – so avoid the fit and flares and look at the A-lines.

JIS FOR JEWELLERY

The fun doesn’t end when you order your dress, as now you get to start shopping for your accessories. It’s generally recommended to do this after you’ve decided on your attire as it’s easier to make the jewellery work with the dress rather than the other way around. The right piece can elevate your look or solve and niggles you may have.

IS FOR KICK UP YOUR HEELS

HGIS FOR HAPPY TEARS

Fear not, when you find the one all is not necessarily as we see it on TV with much arm flapping and tears. If you’re not the emotional sort, it’s unlikely you’ll suddenly start while you’re dress shopping, and that’s completely fine. Sometimes, it will simply be a case of weighing up your options and feeling satisfied with your decision. As long as you feel comfortable in that, there’s no reason to doubt it, so don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

IS FOR IVORY

Here comes the bride, all dressed in white... or is she? While Queen Victoria made it popular for the bride to wear white, having done so on her own wedding day, commitment to this tradition has by and large been relegated to the annals of history.

Heather says, “There are so many colours to choose from, but make sure you talk to your bridal stylist, as not every dress comes in multiple hues. Poplar at the moment are champagne and sand, both slightly warmer than ivory. Another popular choice is mocha, which has a richer tone, but is darker than ivory.”

Hanni says, “If you’re looking for a gown that’s still traditional but has a bit of an edge, we’d suggest looking at the neutral hue options ranging from light almond, to dark mocha and look especially fabulous on the lining of a lace gown. Blush pink is also wonderful and gives a softer, more romantic tone to your gown. For a bolder bride, make a statement with hot pink, red or black. We’d recommend checking out Madi Lane’s new Nostalgia collection released in 2023, which we’ll be stocking. It has some wonderful colour options.”

LIS FOR LACE

Once you’ve ordered your gown, it’s time to give your footwear some serious thought. You’ll need to have your shoes in the bag by the time your alterations appointment comes round as it’s important to make sure the seamstress knows the exact length the dress needs to be, and heels versus flats will make quite the difference.

Make sure you’re comfortable. If you generally live and die in trainers, there are some gorgeous bridal options out there. Alternatively, many brides choose to make their shoes their wedding-day treat to themselves and spend months saving for the ultimate Jimmy Choos.

MIS FOR MONEY

We adore lace! It has long been used in wedding dresses largely thanks to its luxurious nature, having historically been labourintensive to produce. Once again Queen Vic is in part responsible for its popularity, sporting handmade lace on her wedding dress. But if you’re now thinking of grandma’s doilies – stop! Modern lace is as varied as it is beautiful. Alencon, eyelet, Chantilly, embroidered, guipure (sometimes called Venetian), soft knit, and point d’esprit are all popular with today’s designers, covering styles from chic and traditional to vintage and boho.

Emma Page and Sophie McCoy at Bellissima Brides (www.bellissima-brides.co.uk) say, “It’s so important to be clear on your budget before your first bridal appointments. We never ask a bride their budget as there’s always a little bit of flexibility for the right one, but to fall in love with a dress that’s way outside what you expected to pay is a tricky situation to be in. So, get a ball park in mind by researching brands and boutiques. Most bridal boutiques will state their average price points on their website and socials. If you’re unsure, don’t hold back, just ask.”

Blue & Sixpence was born out of our own experience - we wanted fabulous service, choice, style, fit and price- and just couldn't find it. We don't believe that your bridal shopping experience should be dictated by only being able to shop in certain stores. We stock sizes 8-32 so that every Bride, whatever her shape, size, style or budget can have a wonderful, friendly, relaxed and private Bridal experience. We also offer a carefully curated collection of accessories, most are handmade by Ali, for a totally unique look! www.blueandsixpence.co.uk Ali@blueandsixpence.co.uk | 07890 844214 Unit 8, Building B, Business First, 23 Goodlass Road, Liverpool, L24 9HJ

NIS FOR NECKLINES

Just as there are many silhouettes to choose from, there's a world of necklines, each having its part to play in complementing or accentuating your figure. Head to Google and research sweetheart, plunging, off-the-shoulder, high, halter, one-shoulder, V, illusion, boat, empire, queen, scoop... we could go on!

PIS FOR PRELOVED

If you’d rather invest your cash in other areas of the wedding, but don’t want to compromise on your look, you may want to consider looking at preloved gowns. Kinder on the pocket, these dresses will have been worn only once, some not at all, and may be no older than last season.

QIS FOR QUICK

If you’re planning a short engagement or you’ve left it a little late in the day to hit the boutiques, don’t panic! Hanni tells us, “There are rush options available, as well as purchasing an off-the-peg gown, so try not to stress too much.” Heather agrees, “If you’re really lucky, your favourite dress may be in a UK warehouse somewhere! Talk to your stylist and see what options are available.”

Another budget-saving solution, or an idea if you’re short on time, is a sample sale. At the end of the season, bridal boutiques will often hold special events where they sell their sample dresses at a reduced cost to give them room in the boutique for the new lines. You’ll be limited on size of course, so be prepared to spend more on alterations. But they’re ready and waiting for you to take away, so no year-in-advance ordering is required.

RIS FOR REVIEWS

As you would when researching any supplier for your W-day team, check out your local bridal boutique’s reviews. They’re understandably proud of the kind words their past brides have shared, so many will have a tab on their website you can look through. Alternatively, Facebook is a good place to see what’s hot. If nothing else, they’ll help to reassure you that you’re in good hands if you’re nervous before your appointment.

OIS FOR ORDERING

Hanni from My Funny Valentine Bridal says, “We’d

recommend starting the search for your dress around 12 to 18 months before the big day. There’s a lot to think about, so it’s best not to delay!

“What many don’t realise is that on top of the time it takes to find your dream dress, gowns are made to order and therefore can take at least six months to receive. On top of this, you want to incorporate time for unexpected delays, then enough to have a minimum of three dress fittings – yes, three!”

Heather from The Bridal Lounge gives us another reason for shopping so far in advance: “Looking at dresses exactly a year before the wedding will give you a feel for what the weather will be like on your big day. If it’s really hot, then think about something strapless or without sleeves.”

IS FOR SLEEVES

SSleeves are becoming incredibly popular and offer a multitude of flexible options. Emma and Sophie say, “Sleeves are something we’re really excited about for our brides. Over the last few years we’ve seen designers come up with new and exciting ways to update their gowns and detachable sleeves have been a huge hit. Giving you a more modest and romantic look for your aisle walk, a sleeve, be it long or a Bardot, completely updates a look, then gives you a fresh take on your gown when you take them off for the evening.”

You could even talk to your seamstress about adding to gowns that don’t already have them if you’re self-conscious about your arms or just love the look.

IS FOR TRENDS

“We’re seeing a massive switch to go big or go home here at Bellissima Brides,” Emma and Sophie tell us. “Our brides are loving beautiful ballgowns and glamorous beaded fitted dresses with trains to die for. Our new Blanche Bridal range has hit the boutique recently and really does have the wow factor. If you want to feel special on your big day, these are the gowns for you!”

VIS FOR VEIL

UIS FOR UNIQUE

“We make sure our brides know that we can change anything except the colour and fabric of a gown,” says Ali. “We have a full range of accessories available from straps, sleeves, appliqués and lace, sparkles and spangles, extra fabric, and ribbon and buttons too!

“Often during an appointment, a bride will say: ‘I like it but...’ We’re able to customise gowns on the fly, reworking necklines, sleeves and more. By altering the smallest detail on a designer gown, you can make it a world exclusive, bespoke to you.”

In day-to-day life accessories can make or break an outfit, and the veil is the bridal version of that theory. Long, statement veils were popular in 2022, in part thanks to Kourtney K, and they’re so versatile. There’s nothing to say you have to keep it on all day, you may wish to switch up your look with a hair accessory later on and keep the veil for that romantic, ethereal look as you walk down the aisle. They’re not for everyone, but our best advice is: don’t rule it out until you’ve tried it.

WIS FOR WILD CARD

Our golden rule when it comes to wedding-dress shopping is to go in with a completely open mind, as tunnel vision could lead to a stressful situation if the style you set your heart on just doesn’t work out how you thought. Your stylist or one of your entourage may pull out a wild card, something you never thought you’d go for. Trust us, try it on, it could be the one.

IS FOR “YES”

How do you know this is the dress for you?

Ali at Blue & Sixpence Bridal has an idea: “We always say that if you can answer ‘yes’ to three questions you’ve found the one... Do I look like the best version of me?

Am I confident? Am I comfortable? Nothing else matters.”

XIS FOR X-PERT

OK, we cheated a bit, but we couldn’t finish up without extolling the virtues of the amazing local boutique consultants. They have your best interests at heart and they really know their stuff. When you arrive for your appointment you’ll have an initial consultation, which will help your stylist to understand you and your vision. We like to think of them as the dress whisperers!

IS FOR ZOOM

It’s inevitable your dress will have a little travelling to do – when you collect it and when you take it to the venue, as a minimum. To keep it in tip-top condition invest in a good quality, acid-free garment bag to store it in, and once it’s home keep it away from any harsh light or temperatures. When you’re heading for the venue lay down the seats of the car and place the dress flat if you can, or hang from the garment hook if that fails. Just be sure to hang it up again as soon as you arrive. We’d also highly recommend taking a handheld steamer with you – we speak from experience! Your seamstress will steam it for you once they've worked their magic, but it doesn’t take much for some fabrics to crumple again.

Now, along with affordable and high-end timepieces, the new bricks and mortar store will showcase more than 30 brands of watches and employ experienced and knowledgeable staff.

Tim Harrison tells us: “We will continue to grow our online presence, however, particularly within the luxury side of watch retail, there will always be demand for a premium in-store experience. Q&A Fashion and beauty

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the experts

2023 TRENDS

This issue we asked some of the region’s talented fashion and beauty experts for their top 2023 trend predictions, giving you the jump on the latest looks. This is what they told us...

THE YEAR OF THE UP DO

Johanna says: In 2023, up dos are here to stay with a textured twist. The tousled up do will remain one of the top wedding hair trends throughout the year. Brides are loving these styles because they offer a romantically soft appearance.

The relaxed knotted bun will be a firm favourite too. This is a style I’m seeing a lot of interest in with brides asking for both low and high buns. Either represents such an elegant look that can be left soft, relaxed and simplistic, and the bangs can be left out to frame the face. You can also create a sleek style with the bun allowing it to be tailored to suit your overall vision.

Brides have been loving the look of a super-chic puffed out braid for a long time now. This is also one of my favourites to create since it’s possible to design so many different styles that all look unique on each individual bride’s hair colour.

Finally, I’m seeing glam waves everywhere at the moment. This look offers an effortless look with a romantic vibe. The wave will always hold a special place in all of our hearts as it’s a timeless look that suits everyone.

A YEAR OF SURPRISES

Heather says: More and more over the past few weeks, I’ve been seeing one particular trend that’s caught my attention and that of my brides. There’s something fun about wowing your guests in a gorgeous ballgown, only to stun them further when you take off your overskirt to reveal a sexy, fitted dress underneath. Detachable elements to dresses are sure to help you make a statement; whether you go for the matching overskirt or the fully-removable sleeves, or even a lace bolero/jacket that sweetly complements your dress, you can’t go wrong. And if you don’t like it on the day, don’t wear it! That’s the beauty of detachable items. You still have the option of choice even on your big day.

I’m also expecting to see a lot of sparkle and big statement dresses over the coming year. Something fun and different is always a winner, like a detailed train or 3D flowers. The softer ivory tones are returning to the scene too, with brides leaning more towards champagne and soft gold tones over the richer mocha and neutral colours that we’ve seen in recent years.

TRIED AND TESTED

Over time, our natural hyaluronic acid levels decline, making the appearance of those dreaded lines and wrinkles more pronounced. But RoC’s new Hydrate + Plump Daily Moisturizer comes to the rescue with SPF 30 helping to restore skin’s natural moisture, visibly replumping lines and replenishing hydration. CWM editor Rachel Westall put it to the test.

“As a woman in my 30s, my skin is an area I need to pay attention to, and with RoC endorsed by one of my all-time fave gals, Sarah Jessica Parker, I was already sold! These winter months can be so harsh on your skin so this has been a welcome addition to my morning routine, keeping my face hydrated with a natural glow. It’s superlightweight so it’s easy to apply and leaves no residue behind, only soft smooth skin all day. I can’t wait to try the entire range.” £35.99, https://rocskincare.co.uk

HO-HO-BA HELP

You may have noticed jojoba oil trending on TikTok of late – the word about its skincare benefits is most definitely out. Not actually an oil but rather a wax ester, it mimics our skin’s natural oils and penetrates deep beneath the surface working wonders on dry and oily skin types alike as well as acne, eczema, wrinkles, sun damage, pigmentation, collagen, scars, wounds and more.

The Jojoba Company, which grows the plant organically and filters it 14 times to ensure absolute purity, offers a range of products harnessing its benefits. If you’re keen to take a first foray into the world of jojoba skincare, we recommend trying the Australian Jojoba. The brand’s top seller it can be used on face, body and hair. Rich in vitamins A, D and E, and omegas 6 and 9, it deeply moisturises for up to eight hours, something that’s much needed all year round to solve a whole heap of bodycare issues.

KISS AND TELL

These shades are top of our bridal-look must-have list: La Piscine – a neutral, creamy colour ideal for that natural and effortless no make-up look; Roaring 20s – a deep, mysterious red, inspired by the Jazz Age, perfect for a vintage bride vibe; The Met – a natural hue with a pink base this feminine shade creates a fresh look with an air of romance; and Spiaggia Rosa –a beautiful coral pink that looks great on all complexions. £28, www.codeeight.com

DOT TO DOT

The Utan Pen is the viral TikTok freckle pen that Sophie Habboo and Melissa Tattum are raving about. While many of you may long for a glowy sun-kissed look for your big day, the damage UV rays can cause the skin is something we’re only too aware of. However, the recently-launched Utan Pen makes this goal totally achievable with zero sun damage. Designed to create instant natural-looking freckles that develop to suit each individual skin tone, it has been compared to semi-permanent make-up. The formula is even water-resistant and sweat proof, lasting up to 48 hours, so whatever the wedding day throws at you, your super-cute freckles will remain perfectly in place.

HEMP, HEMP HOORAY!

Only around three per cent of polypropylene plastic, the material synthetic eyelashes are made from, can be recycled and takes 20 to 30 years to decompose. AQUA(WO)MAN

The latest fragrance from perfumer Juliet Has A Gun, Ego Straits, is an original aquatic cologne with a refreshing and energising citrus top note cocktail, laying on a long-lasting marine heart. The result is a contemporary, almost unisex, women’s fragrance, an ode to gender fluidity.

The brand’s founder and perfumer Romano Ricci says of the new scent, “It would take me more than a lifetime to explore the complexity of women! Since the beginning I’ve attempted to unravel, layer by layer, the facets of women with a capital W. With this latest opus, I wanted to unite them all. Sometimes femme fatale, sometimes romantic, sometimes boyish, Ego Straits embraces all those contradictions while blurring the lines.”

The truth ABOUT SUGAR

Find your way to wedding wellness by managing that sweet tooth with help from expert nutritionists

Celebrations such as weddings are typically marked with something sweet – who would say “no” to a slice of cake? While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying sweet treats, excess sugar is inextricably linked with poor health and is the possible cause of issues like inflammatory skin conditions and mood swings. None of which make particularly desirable additions to a wedding day!

The trouble is we can’t do without it! The simplest form of sugar, glucose, is used by every cell in the body to create energy, so it’s a vital molecule helping us to function. According to the NHS, we should be aiming for an intake of no more than 30g of sugar per day. Although, experts say that we unwittingly consume much more due to hidden sugars found in various foods. Such culprits include a myriad of favourites like pasta sauces, dips, ready meals, chilled meats, yoghurts and cereals, as well as carbohydrates including potatoes, pasta, bread and even vegetables like carrots.

Why is this a problem? Over time excess sugar intake can lead to more sinister health concerns such as type 2 diabetes. So, to find out how to look forward to a happy, healthy wedding day and beyond, County Wedding Magazines’ beauty and wellbeing editor, Kelly Andrews, asked expert nutritionists Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness for some advice on managing the sweet tooth in all of us.

READ FOOD LABELS

To find hidden sugars, review the ingredients in your food by using the traffic light labels on packaging, which indicate total sugars. Ingredients are listed in order of quantity, so avoid anything that lists sugar high up or

switch to a sugar-free substitute. Watch out for alternative names for sugar like syrup and anything that ends in “-ose” (sucrose, fructose).

WATCH WHAT YOU DRINK

Whether it’s a syrupy cocktail, a fizzy energy drink, or a glass of orange juice, certain drinks contain a shocking level of sugar that actually causes you to eat more than normal. Opt for water or tonic-based drinks that are not only lower in sugar, but will help keep your teeth healthy too.

CURB THE CRAVINGS

No doubt sugar makes us feel good. It lights up an area of the brain that we associate with being rewarded, which is why sugar cravings can be hard to beat. Planning is key; if you like to snack, choose sugar-free options such as nuts, veg sticks and hummus or plain yoghurt with berries. Ensure your meals include complex carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats to keep you full with more nutrient-dense foods. This is why dessert is served last!

IT’S NOT DOWN TO SIZE

A common mistake many make is to continue eating poorly if they don’t put on weight. Body shape however, isn’t always the truest indicator of health. Genetics and ethnicity play a big part in how we metabolise foods, so be mindful of what you’re eating regardless of your size. Healthy on the inside equals healthy on the outside.

HEALTHY SUGARS

Foods like honey, maple syrup, jaggery, molasses and treacle are often considered healthier due to their additional benefits, such

as vitamin, mineral and antioxidant properties. They are however forms of sugar just like the regular white or brown kinds, so be mindful of any source of the sweet stuff.

FIBRE IS YOUR FRIEND

Fibre is found in all fruits and vegetables and is essential for gut health. The reason whole fruits are usually preferred over the juiced alternative is that fibre dramatically slows down the rate at which sugar hits the bloodstream, making it much more manageable for the body to store, while keeping you satiated. Fruit also comes with essential vitamins and minerals, making it a perfect alternative to processed sugary foods.

A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP

All food, including sugar, should be enjoyed as part of an overall healthy diet. Pay attention to the total amount of sugar you consume and make better choices to avoid hidden sugars. This way, you can consciously enjoy sweet treats when you fancy.

Being restrictive and associating guilt with food only causes confusion and emotional distress leading to further complications impacting long-term health. Knowing what’s in your food will help you make better decisions for better wellbeing.

YOUR DREAM HONEYMOON… gifted by your friends

You have the wedding of your dreams planned and paid for. You actually don’t need any gifts, but friends and family want to give you something. One idea is a honeymoon fund.

How does it work? Two ways:

1. You book your chosen honeymoon and pay a deposit. During the months leading up to your final payment you send a gift request to add to your honeymoon fund. This is paid straight into your account. When final payment is due, you just pay any outstanding balance. You are notified each time there is a payment.

2. Not ready to book? Open your account. Send out your request and start building your fund. When you are ready to book, you use the funds available to book where you might like to go. All monies are entered into your account with GoCruise. www.gocruiseandtravel/ globalreach. We are members of ABTA, ATOL. CLIA and ATOS so everything is safe and secure. OF THE BAY On the dock

Crete, the largest island in Greece, is renowned for its stunning golden beaches, wild natural beauty, delicious cuisine and thousands of years of culture and history. Add to that the kind and generous Cretan hospitality, gorgeous weather and chilled vibes and you can guarantee the perfect getaway.

My husband and I jetted off to the Wyndham Grand Crete Mirabello Bay report on the eastern side of the island at the beautiful coastal town of Agios Nikolaos. Our trip was for a few days, but I don’t think a twoweek break would’ve felt like long enough – it was truly amazing. It coincided with a milestone birthday too (my 40th!), so it felt extra special, almost as special as reliving our honeymoon all over again.

HEAVENLY ROOMS

After just a 50-minute transfer from Heraklion Airport, we arrived at our home for the next few days and were excited at what we were greeted by. This beachfront resort features the most amazing sea views overlooking Mirabello Bay, that are framed by picturesque mountains and our room, like many here, overlooked that very view.

We were lucky to experience a stay in one of the Wyndham Collection Sea View Maisonettes in the resort’s Village. If you’re honeymooning here, I highly recommend a stay in a maisonette or bungalow. Each of these feature private infinity pools and sun loungers and many, like ours, looked out to the Mediterranean – perfect! The resort will even arrange for a private floating breakfast upon request to make your first morning here as a married couple even more special.

The rooms in the main building are just as gorgeous, with either sea, garden or bay views, all boast modern interiors and there’s also the option of a wellness room with your very own rooftop jetted pool – the accommodation options are endless.

KICK BACK AND RELAX

As well as our private pool, we enjoyed both of the resort’s pools – one by the beach with those stunning sea views once again, and the adultonly option within the Village (a quiet, calming spot in which to enjoy the sunshine). We also love a beach and dip in the sea and the hotel boasts a sandy beach and a pebble beach within the premises, so we were spoilt for choice. The free-of-charge beach cabanas were also a romantic addition and made the beach trip feel all the more special.

The hotel also benefits from an onsite spa offering an extensive range of massages and treatments, salon services, an indoor pool and a sauna and hammam. For those on their honeymoon, there’s a beachfront couples treatment area (available upon request) so you can lose yourself to the sound of the crashing waves whilst enjoying your massage.

GET ACTIVE

For the more energetic, there’s plenty of activities here to keep you busy. Three tennis courts, a beach volleyball court and an outdoor fitness and bodyweight training area to name a few! The water sports enthusiasts are also in luck – just head down to the beach and choose from scuba diving, snorkelling, jet skiing, water skiing or head out on a banana boat, pedalo

HONEYMOONS 103

or canoe to take in the views from the water. For a lower-impact activity, some of the rooms in the Village boast yoga and pilates decks over the pools too.

FOOD AND DRINK

The resort features nine on-site restaurants and bars offering aweinspiring views. Our breakfast spot each morning was just perfect looking out to sea through a stone arch of the restaurant’s balcony. Throughout the day, you can grab a cocktail or beer from one of the bars and refuel with your choice of delicious Cretan, Mediterranean, Italian, or barbeque cuisine. You can also order food to your room to make the most of your private balcony.

During our stay we enjoyed some beautiful pasta at Elia A La Carte Restaurant and indulged in the local culture at the Kafenion Cretan Restaurant with traditional rustic cookery and Cretan dancing.

If it’s a chilled drink you’re after as your day comes to a close, check out the Shisha Patio. With its throws, cushions and mind-soothing background tunes, this is the perfect way to unwind after your day in the sun.

EXPLORE

The resort had more than enough to entertain us, but we took a short stroll into the chic cosmopolitan town of Agios Nikolaos. With its shop, bar and restaurant-lined promenade and buzzy atmosphere we loved our time here. Lake Voulismeni is at the heart of this vibrant town, and we just happened to be there during the international cliff diving competition which was a spectacle to see! My big birthday just happened to be on the day of the final, so we decided to eat out that night at the Piano Restaurant overlooking the lake and diving and what a treat it was. The area had such a happy, festival vibe, the food and views were amazing, the locals eating there were the most welcoming and friendly, and just as my birthday cake appeared (made especially by the chef), the cliff diving closing fireworks commenced. It was almost as if my husband planned it all as a romantic surprise (he didn’t by the way but was feeling quite pleased with himself – what good luck hey!).

There’s so much more to do and see but our time here just wasn’t long enough to squeeze more in. What I can say for sure though is that we’ll be back. Crete’s definitely got a special place in our hearts.

BOOK IT

We flew from Leeds Bradford Airport with Jet2 to Heraklion Airport which is just 64km from the hotel.

Check out all that this stunning resort has to offer and book your trip here by visiting www.wyndhamhotels.com/wyndham-grand

Calling all animal lovers

We’ve put together the ultimate guide to pets at weddings to help you create the perfect day

If you’re anything like us at County Wedding Magazines, your pets mean the world to you and are an extended part of the family. Many couples choose to include their fur babies in annual celebrations, so why not do the same on your special day? Here are some top tips for creating the perfect wedding alongside your furry friend.

WHAT TO CONSIDER

Having your pet by your side during your wedding might be an exciting thought, but consider how they might react in new environments or larger crowds – you won’t want to stress them out.

If you think involving your fur baby might not be the best idea, fear not as there are plenty of ways to feature your pet on the day. One of our favourite ways is bringing them along to your engagement shoot and using the images on the wedding invites or around your reception space. Why not incorporate an illustration of your pet throughout the stationery, such as on your menus, table names, signage and table plan? You can even have animal-shaped candles or elegant ornaments of animals on the tables – let your imagination run wild and have fun with it!

GROOMER HAS IT

As you’ll be looking back on your wedding images for years to come, it’s essential to ensure everyone looks their best – including your furry friend. So, book your pet into the groomers or take some time before the day to pamper your pet and get them big-day ready. Why not purchase a tux, bow tie, bandana, floral collar, wreath or floral harness to ensure they look ohso smart? Just remember, practice makes perfect! So, get your pet used to wearing any new accessories around the house before the day so they can feel comfortable. Many couples are opting for floral or pearl leads that look stunning and fashionable. If you’re opting for floral accessories, ensure the blooms aren’t toxic to your pet.

If you’re worried pre-wedding nerves will kick on the day, ensure you take some time with your pet that morning to help you relax.

THE PERFECT SETTING

The first and most essential step when planning to have your pet at your wedding is to find a pet-friendly venue. Some venues allow pets throughout the entire site, while others only allow them outside; although this won’t be an issue if you’re having an al fresco celebration it’s best to check the policies they have in place.

Consider the spaces when looking around a property. If you have older pets, keep in mind the flooring as you won’t want them struggling to get around if the floors are slippery. Look for an area where you can create a cosy den where they can relax and escape the crowd if needed. Pack some of their favourite toys and blankets for some added comfort on the day. We suggest taking your pet to the venue before the wedding if possible, so they can familiarise themselves with the surroundings. Remember that your chosen venue might ask for an extra fee or a security deposit to ensure there’s no damage left behind.

109 PETS AT WEDDINGS

PET SITTER

Your pet will need a chaperone at the wedding as the day itself will be very busy. So, take some of the weight off your shoulders by hiring a pet sitter or having a loved one on hand to help look after your furry friend. Have a chat with them before the wedding to plan feeding times, exercise and where they need to be throughout the day. They’ll also offer extra support and can jump in when needed. Not only will your pet be in great hands, but they’ll get plenty of care and the attention needed throughout the day.

If you’re on the fence about having your pet attend your wedding, why not have someone bring them along to just the photo shoot away from all the guests? That way, you can take a lovely walk and still see them on your special day – think about the cute images that would be captured!

BON A-PET-TREAT

One of our favourite ways to feature your pet is by incorporating them in the cake topper, so they’ll be the centre of attention and a talking point amongst guests. Many companies can create the pieces using clay or wood, so you can treasure the topper for years to come. Or why not have cute favours such as pet-shaped biscuits or donate to an animal shelter on behalf of your guests? Many organisations can print cards or provide pins as a thank you to share with guests.

If you have leftover cake on the day, why not have doggie bags with an illustration of your pooch for a nice touch? We also love the idea of a treat-to-go station with some tasty treats and custom bags for guests to take home to their animals or share with other pets attending the day. If you’re having a signature cocktail, a fun idea is naming the drink after your companion.

BE PREPARED

Let guests know ahead of the wedding that your pet will be attending the day on your RSVPs or wedding website. That way, anyone with allergies or phobias has time to step forward and arrangements can be made to suit everyone. Loved ones can take extra measures by taking Antihistamines or keeping their distance throughout the day. You’ll also want to inform your photographer so they can prepare and plan some stunning shoots with your best friend – this is particularly important if you have a large pet such as a horse, llama or donkey.

SPECIAL ROLE

Ask any pet owner and they’ll tell you how special their pet really is; they’re with us in our happiest and saddest moments, always ready to share their love. So, why not give them a special role on the day to highlight their importance? Imagine having your companion by your side as you walk down the aisle towards your future husband/wife. Many popular roles included flowergirl, best man, dog-of-honour or ring bearer. Check with your celebrant or registrar to ensure they’re comfortable with this.

For a fun and special touch to your day, why not attach a GoPro to your pet’s harness to capture the day in their eyes? This entertaining idea is the perfect way to look back on your wedding and feel even closer to your best bud – it will also make for some hilarious moments!

"We are so happy we chose Pollards for our wedding reception, Cara and her team did a superb job being attentive to our needs in the planning. On the day she made sure everything ran smoothly throughout and the staff were extremely helpful, we had a great day!

The food was delicious for every course, and the canapés went down extremely well in the outside Barnhouse and gorgeous gardens with our guests. They catered for our guests with dietary requirements superbly, and they were well looked after.

It was the perfect venue for the number of friends and family that we wanted, and it created a lovely intimate wedding which we will never forget!

We particularly loved the private bar area and decoration of the main room which made the whole day feel so special and we couldn't recommend Pollards enough!"
