Icannot believe that my dear friends Melissa and Dave will be celebrating their first anniversary this month! Where on earth did that year go? For those of you who are new to the magazine and, possibly happily for you, missed my endless and excited rambles about preparing to be a bridesmaid for fellow CWM editor Melissa, I hope you’ll indulge me as I reminisce!

Not wanting to start out on a negative note, but hands up: I hate the summer. It’s just too hot! Many a time I’ve contemplated taking a summer home in Iceland, but alas the budget doesn’t permit. But in 2022, my season horribilis was made all the merrier by the excitement of a wedding. Sage green and blush pink was the palette of choice, while the vibe was rustic. Still on trend this year, I’d go so far as to call it a timeless theme. On 22nd July, we’d just about made it through the hottest days of the year, when thank goodness, the temperatures started to cool to a bearable level. An al fresco ceremony, a reception with the venues’ folding doors flung open, and some memorable moments for the newlyweds spent with their photographer in the nearby cornfields during golden hour: It was all a summer wedding should be, and more.

I’ll admit to liking one thing about the season though, and it came into play on Melissa and Dave’s big day, as indeed it would at any wonderful wedding. First and foremost, it’s the long days. Making the best of the great outdoors is something we can do to the max during the summer. There are no more hours in the day, of course, but somehow it feels like there are, which is a huge plus when you’re celebrating such a momentous occasion. So, if you’re thinking about hosting your entire day outside, you won’t want to miss the advice of our experts over in Hot Topic from page 52. Or, if you want to at least have the option to spill out of your venue and into some glorious gardens, check out our venue feature from page 21.
I hope you find inspiration aplenty among the pages of our summer issue, where there’s even a venue styling hotlist (page 49) featuring all the top trends so you can learn how to make it all look utterly gorgeous!
Enjoy and keeeep planning!
I’m obsessed with Nikita and Ashley’s super-cool festival theme, which included old vinyls and meaningful song lyrics.

26 HERE COME THE HOUNDS
Helen and Thomas had no less than three furry friends, who proved pretty popular, at their wedding. One of the little woofers even strutted four paws on the dancefloor threatening to upstage the newlyweds during their first dance!
I adore this understated, elegant gown from Nica Brida in Liverpool. With subtle details such as lace sleeves, open back and buttons, it would look as at home on a boho bride as it would at a classic wedding. Perfect for a summer’s day.
Tucked away in the heart of Liverpool city centre, St Luke’s Bombed Out Church is a Grade II* listed building has been preserved to maintain its stunning architecture, offering a truly unique seng for your special day.
St Luke’s is recently licensed and therefore can now host weddings as well as with celebrant led ceremonies. We specialise in weddings tailored to your wishes, no number of guests are too small.

Churchtown Wedding Cars is currently celebrating its 30th anniversary. The company was established in 1993, and in 2015 current owners Steven and Laura bought the business from founders Roy and Pat. The pair initially took on their beautiful silver Beaufort Tourer, but having expanded the fleet since then, they can now also offer two Imperial Landaulettes and a 1975 VW Camper.
Laura says, “We’re a small family-run business and we’re so proud to reach this milestone. Cheshire Pony Parties has created a new service providing ponies to carry champagne and/or confetti at weddings. Business owner, Amanda Keech told us: “I was approached recently by a Londonbased wedding planner to provide a pony to carry champagne at a prestigious wedding venue in Cheshire. It inspired me to put my 14 years of experience delivering professionally organised, highend, engaging pony and unicorn parties with wow factor, to create a new service offering ponies for weddings.”
The wedding ponies, including adorable Skittles (pictured), will be able to cover Cheshire and occasionally surrounding counties, carrying either bubbly for the newlyweds while you’re having your photos taken, and/or confetti for the guests to throw post ceremony. They’re a gorgeous extra to any country wedding for animal lovers. Amanda continues, “I wanted the ponies to have a stunningly simple country look, so was delighted to find some gorgeous tiny wicker baskets just big enough to carry a champagne bottle.” Cuteness overload!

"We are so happy we chose Pollards for our wedding reception, Cara and her team did a superb job being attentive to our needs in the planning. On the day she made sure everything ran smoothly throughout and the staff were extremely helpful, we had a great day!
The food was delicious for every course, and the canapés went down extremely well in the outside Barnhouse and gorgeous gardens with our guests. They catered for our guests with dietary requirements superbly, and they were well looked after.
It was the perfect venue for the number of friends and family that we wanted, and it created a lovely intimate wedding which we will never forget!
We particularly loved the private bar area and decoration of the main room which made the whole day feel so special and we couldn't recommend Pollards enough!"

Ness was created more than 100 years ago by a man whose intense love of nature inspired a search for rare and beautiful plants, which spanned the globe. His name was AK Bulley and his gift to you is a place unlike any other in which to be married.
There’s a choice of two venues for your wedding ceremony here: al fresco in the Rock Garden or indoors in the Hulme Room Conservatory with its sweeping views across the gardens. If you decide on the former you’ll enter from the VIP car park and cross the sandstone bridge to join your guests, who’ll be assembled in the lovely Rock Garden. The “I dos” will take place in the thatched Summer House next to the lily pond and once you’ve signed the register and the ceremony is wrapped up, drinks and canapés will be served. The area can accommodate up to 100 standing guests for
ceremonies, but can provide seating for any guests who may need a rest during proceedings. The gardens provide an idyllic backdrop for romantic photographs, a favourite among past couples is the iconic bridge in the Rock Garden; and if you’re lucky enough to marry on a clear day, you can capture magnificent photographs of views across to Wales.
The Hulme Room Conservatory offers the perfect alternative to an outdoor ceremony and is a particularly popular choice for autumn and winter weddings. This light and airy space overlooks the Gardens and includes use of the impressive Hulme Deck area, offering breakout spaces for guests with spectacular photo opportunities. The space is decorated in a neutral style and features a pretty glazed lobby with double doors opening into it. As well as the “I dos,” the Hulme Room Conservatory and Deck is ideal for a drinks reception, wedding breakfast and evening reception, and can accommodate a maximum of 100 guests.

Helen and Thomas settled on a relaxed, rustic vibe to suit their chilled-out natures
Helenand Thomas went to the same high school and college, but never actually met. They might have seen each other from afar at mutual friends’ parties, but didn’t speak. However, fate wasn’t giving up, as a decade later at a Halloween party that all changed. Helen says, “We were both dressed in the worst outfits ever and hit it off!”
When Covid caused their planned New York trip to be cancelled, followed by another to Tenby in Wales, Thomas’ vision of the perfect proposal was in tatters! So, he decided to throw caution to the wind during one of their runs along the usual route, and got on one knee in the mud on Boxing Day 2020. “It was incredibly unexpected and kind of perfect,” Helen remembers.
When the couple discovered Tatton Weddings at Stock Farm Barn they fell instantly in love. “It was the perfect venue to make our own, suiting our laid-back natures. Overall, it just felt right,” Helen explains. So, they wasted no time in securing their date, 2nd April, 2022.
Read on as the bride tells us all about their big day...
Having settled on a navy blue palette paired with a rustic vibe the couple set about planning their decorative elements. The table plan was mounted on a pallet, which Helen was able to make herself. Also, in keeping with the natural, rustic theme were the centrepieces, which took the form of simple, wooden log slices decorated in gypsophila to mirror the bride’s bouquet. Also featuring in the floral arrangements were beautiful roses along with eucalyptus for a touch of natural greenery.
Since they’d fallen head over heels for the barn’s fairylights at first sight, the duo decided to add to this with even more in the shape of a fairylight wall. They also hired wooden LOVE letters for an added feature.
Their wedding breakfast was a selection of delicious tapas dishes, a dining style that’s a favourite with the bride and groom.
Helen wore a Shikoba Bride dress, Allanah. At the start of her dress shopping journey, she was adamant that she didn’t want a strapless gown, but stepping into the bridal boutique, Serendipity, she found herself going back to one dress. “I just loved its boho look with lace and alternative styling,” the bride explains. “I wore it with white Converse, navy blue laces and added my leather jacket for the evening. I also opted for a flower crown made from our choice of blooms.”
Thomas and his groomsmen wore navy blue Ted Baker suits. The gents’ waistcoats were all matching, whereas the groom wore a different one to stand out as the man of the moment. Meanwhile, the bridesmaids were dressed in navy floor-length dresses, also paired with white Converse.
“Everything was utterly perfect and suited us down to the ground. I didn’t want it to end.” – Helen

A live band ensured all assembled made it to the dancefloor throughout the evening. Even one of the furry guests got involved, a gorgeous dachshund, who decided to be the first to hit the floor moments after the band started playing, joining the newlyweds for their first dance.
The couple also hired a vintage photo booth caravan, which guests adored. “I had a caravan growing up, so this was a must!” Helen tells us.
“I felt very much in love and incredibly grateful to everyone there for joining us on our special day. Plus, starting the day at our local parkrun definitely kicked off proceedings with such positivity,” Helen shares. While Thomas says, “I was very nervous! Excited, but nervous. My left leg wouldn’t stop shaking as I stood waiting for Helen to bounce down the aisle. At times I felt incredibly emotional seeing all our family and friends beaming at us. After I’d finished my speech, I was very relieved – one: that it was over; and two: that it actually got a few laughs!”
The newlyweds jetted off to Croatia for three weeks, starting in Split, on to Bol, then Hvar, finishing in Cavtat. “We both gave our travel agent the destinations we wanted to visit and they took the stress away by organising it all for us,” Helen tells us. “The locations we chose gave us a bit of everything while we were away, with our favourite being Bol. It was such a relaxed place with epic views out to sea.”
“The highlight for me was seeing Helen bouncing down the aisle with her father, John. Iconic!” – Thomas

Microsoft Teams is by and large to thank for Jodie and Peter’s meeting. The two got to know each other via the platform through work during lockdown and officially became a couple in January 2021. “We’re basically the same person but in male and female forms,” says Jode. Their relationship moved apace and Pete proposed at the end of April that same year. “Soon after we got together, we just knew we wanted to spend our lives together and had spoken about it from the very beginning,” she continues. He popped the question during a day out to Ormskirk. Jode
admits to having a feeling, but was nevertheless surprised. The couple knew West Tower was the place for them as soon as they saw it. In fact they cancelled the other venue viewings they had booked, feeling confident nowhere else could come close. “We fell in love with how beautiful it was and the exclusive aspect was appealing since we’d have kids at the wedding,” Jode shares. So, the date was set for 24th February, 2023.
Join us as we learn more about the big day from the bride herself...
Originally I wanted a long-sleeved dress, but when I tried them on, they didn’t feel right. So, I went for a sleeveless gown in the end and the corset made me feel really comfortable.
Rachel J Florist created my bouquet, and the bridesmaids’, as well as the buttonholes, top table vase arrangements and flowergirls’ wands.
Everyone commented on how relaxed we both were! Pete admitted after the wedding that he was nervous before the ceremony, but once he saw me he felt calm.
The bridesmaids’ dresses were sage green. The two bridesmaids were dressed to match, whereas the maid-of-honour’s gown was slightly different.
Pete and his groomsmen all wore matching suits. They were hired and were spotless and in perfect condition.
The favours were mason jars filled with sweets, as well as small, rustic keepsakes all made by my auntie Shellie, plus colouring books for the kids.
Our table plan was a simple board decorated with eucalyptus to complement the flower theme.
Originally, we’d booked a stylist recommended by the venue, but sadly due to Covid and Brexit her company went bust. So, Event Cheshire took over and helped to create the same arrangements featuring white roses, eucalyptus and hydrangeas that we’d already had in place.
Emma from Event Cheshire worked with Rachel and I to match the centrepiece flowers with the bouquets as closely as possible. Both were patient and easy-going, even when changes were made. The overall result was so well-matched, we were delighted with how it all looked.
It’s safe to say the food was amazing, and everyone loved what they ordered.
We had a wedding-themed bouncy castle for the kids, but the adults, including the two of us, were on it too
The whole day was easy-going; everyone got along and enjoyed themselves during the speeches. Even our three-year-old son Jack got involved! We all just had loads of fun.
We’ve planned a family-moon to enjoy with the kids. We’ll have plenty of time for holidays, just the two of us, when the children are older.

Nikita and Ashley styled their big day with a festival vibe as a nod to their mutual love of music
Images courtesy of Ginger Jam Photography
Nikita met Ashley at a local gig. They were both immediately drawn to one another and quickly discovered much in common. Further down the line when Ashley had decided to propose, he booked a suite at the Townhouse Hotel in Manchester as a surprise for Nikita. Before heading to a White Lies gig one night, they decided to spend the evening in the spa, and it was here that Ashley got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. “It was the most magical moment, which we’ll both treasure forever,” says Nikita. It was fortunate that she said, “Yes,” as Ashley had arranged for their friends to join them the following morning, along with a surprise meal with family and friends the following night. “We returned
home to a house full of balloons, presents and banners,” remembers the bride-to-be.
The couple were enthralled by the setting and scenic views at Sandhole Oak Barn, which was just the classy, rustic venue they’d been looking for. “We could add our own spin on a gig/festival theme,” explains Nikita. “We also loved the additional touches such as the smaller barn for an after party, accommodation for our guests, the outside space, the stunning interior of the barn, the bridal suite and the shepherds hut for the groom’s party.” The date was set for 9th July, 2022.
Join us as bride Nikita shares her treasured memories of the day as well as what went on behind the scenes...
Our flowerboy played a trick on us and pretended he’d lost the rings during the ceremony! We also had one of our best men act as flower man, and he performed a very funny dance before I walked down the aisle, which involved him throwing flower petals at guests. He was a huge hit!
We hired a pianist for the day who played during our ceremony.
For both of us, the moment we saw each other at either end of the aisle is one we’ll never forget, and still gives us butterflies even now.
We made our table plan ourselves using old record vinyls attached to a wooden pallet, and our tables were named after songs and artists that are significant to us. Our table was named after a White Lies song played at the gig we attended the night got engaged.
We had lots of flowers and candles, as well as logs to tie in with the rustic theme of the venue. We used a combination of tall and small arrangements for the centrepieces. We stayed very neutral with the flowers, using plenty of greens and whites. They were simply stunning.
We chose to have different cupcakes on a four-tiered cake stand with a small cutting cake for the top tier. Again this was kept neutral in its colour palette.
The place names had a similar theme to our invitations, which had a floral design and elements of a festival theme. We had vinyl records personalised to say ‘Leese Fest.
We had lots of games outside including Jenga, bean bag toss, ring toss and more.
We also had other music festival touches dotted around the venue such as vinyls with song lyrics on them, and signs featuring different quotes or lyrics, which meant something to us.
I wore a dress by Dando London. I didn’t think I’d have a fitted style, but fell in love with the detailing as soon as I tried it on. It had a low back and I had pearl buttons added. I accessorised with a simple veil, white heeled sandals and a diamond necklace. I also wore a Tiffany bracelet, a gift from my nan before she passed away.
Ashley, the flowerboy, best men, father-of-the-bride, and brother-of- the-bride all wore matching navy blue suits with a subtle check. They had tan shoes and we bought them all matching socks!
The bridesmaids wore long, sage green, halter-neck dresses. They paired these with heels in a neutral hue and personalised necklaces that we gave them as bridesmaids’ gifts.
We were entertained by live music from Adam Finney Music, as well as a DJ. My dad surprised us and booked a sax player for the evening, which guests loved. We wanted a range of music and a lively atmosphere. The dancefloor was full, with guests dancing all evening.
We continued the celebrations the following day with a barbecue for lots of our guests before travelling to Jamaica on honeymoon the following day. We had the best holiday ever!
My top tip is to be organised and have lists! Know exactly what you want and focus on what’s important to you, and not to others.

Deanah from Rainbows Party (www.instagram.com/ rainbowsparty) says, “We used earthy hues of brown, copper, beige and burnt orange to create an overall rust tone here. We love this type of colour scheme in a darker, rustic venue, paired with a substantial number of candles. The contrast creates such a romantic ambience.”
Emma Smith from Event Cheshire (www.eventcheshire.com) says, “Rust is trending hard for 2023 weddings and we just love this rich, daring and unexpected tone for bringing an earthy theme to your big day. A rust-hued palette adds natural richness to a wedding with shades of copper, terracotta and tangy orange. Not exclusively for autumn nuptials, it can be incorporated into both rustic woodland designs and more opulent themes.”
Emma says, “This year, Pantone announced that 2023 would be Viva Magenta’s year. Our favourite Tuscany-themed wedding chose this colour palette to create a striking, bold and lux banqueting tablescape of florals that included roses, peonies and Italian ruscus. The fabulous Viva Magenta nestled between sweet raspberry, creamy ivory and nude coffee mocha tones looking so delicious it left us dreaming of Neapolitan ice cream in the sunshine!”
Deanah says, “We love it when a couple comes to us with an unusual, yet on-trend request. It’s so rewarding to see their vision come to life. As magenta is so widely defined, we combined an array of pink shades here, ranging from deep mauve to vibrant fuchsia to create a well-blended pop of colour in an otherwise neutral room.”
Emma says, “Stately homes automatically set the tone for the day, but we can further help to achieve this regal look with pastel colours teamed with accents of ivory and gold. Statement florals such as bouncing hydrangeas and trickling wisteria, complemented with afternoon tea crockery sets, candelabras, bud vases and accessories such as charger plates are your firm go tos!”
Emma says, “This wedding vibe certainly makes our styling hearts skip a beat! If you’re looking to give your guests an experience that they’ll never forget, if you’re a more is more kind of soul, and if you love to indulge in the finer things then this one’s for you! This is a sensation overload, a feast for all the senses and a first-class trip to the the extremes of styling.”
Emma says, “This look is all about loose free-form styling. Pair vintage and upcycled relics combined with a scattering of pretty wildflowers and grasses. Whether you choose a pale pastel palette or bold and vibrant tones, the key is to create a relaxed informal affair that’s a joy for the senses.”
Amanda Nelson from Wachadoin Events (www.wachadoin.events) says, “2023 is shaping up to be the summer of festival fun. Tipis, stretch tents, barns and even classic marquees offer the perfect outdoor covered space to let your hair down in and dance late into the evening beneath the stars. Venue dressings reflect the outdoorsy feel of willow and logs, luscious foliage and fabulous florals, flashed with a hint of disco by using mirror balls to reflect light and add some sparkle to your big day.”
Image courtesy of Event Cheshire Image courtesy of Event Cheshire Image courtesy of Event CheshireKaren Boyle at Andy Boyle Photography (www.andyboylephotography.com) says: Summer is here bringing with it the chance to have your wedding ceremony outdoors. Beautiful gardens or natural woodland, fresh air, sunshine and the birds serenading you as you take your vows. Perfect!
From springtime until autumn, many venues offer the option of celebrating outdoors. But, this is Britain, so always have a plan B, as no one wants a wet wedding dress and soggy guests. Most venues keep a keen eye on the skies right up until the last moment in case you have to opt for indoors. Don’t be disappointed if plan B has to come into action though, as your photographer will get you outdoors at some point for some amazing, creative shots – rain is an artistic feature.
For woodland weddings, with no indoor option your guests will be grateful for clear brollies, and maybe a rug for their legs. These make great photos as we see them behind you while you make your promises to each other.
Although you and your guests will be wishing for the brightest sunshine for your wedding day, believe it or not, it poses quite a challenge for your photographer as it creates harsh light and shadows, which we have to work hard to minimise. The other thing we really can’t control is the wind, it has a wonderful habit of blowing your veil and your fabulous hairstyle across your face at just the wrong moment! Photoshop is not a miracle worker, and to be honest these natural moments are the true reflection of your day, just like the laughter and the tears.
Enough of the negatives (photographic pun intended), the atmosphere for your outdoor ceremony is magical. Everyone feels more relaxed and that makes brilliant photos; shots of you both surrounded by nature and beautiful light are just wonderful. Your outdoor feeling doesn’t have to be confined to the daylight either, with lighting carefully placed outdoors the most amazing effects can be created as day turns to night.
KEEP
Clare Deary from Cake On The Lake (www.cakeonthelake.com) says: Wedding cakes are fragile as one of the main ingredients is butter, which doesn’t go well with heat. So, if you’re planning a summer wedding there are a few things you need to consider.
Summer heat can’t be controlled, but you can control how you manage it. If you have your heart set on a rustic, naked style bake, the best course of action is to have it brought out after the ceremony. Having it sit out for hours in the heat isn’t ideal unless you want a melting mess.
Ideally when choosing your cake I’d advise a ganache covering as coco solids are better at withstanding heat. Also, fondant icing has stabilising ingredients and doesn’t need refrigeration, so it’s better equipped to withstand soaring summer temperatures than buttercream.
I’d also recommend pale, neutral colours or whites and ivories with minimal decoration as these can be heavy on the cake. Wherever possible your big-day bake needs to be in an air-conditioned room. If you’re getting married in a marquee or tent opt for a darker roof, rather than open or clear, which will attract direct sunlight.
Jacqui Owen from Jacqui O (www.jacquio.co.uk) says: To create enchanting wedding florals with wow factor why not consider the following?
• St yle. Let your wedding theme and style guide you towards the right colour palette, flower varieties, and arrangements that complement the décor.
• Location. The landscape, surroundings, and setting of the venue can influence your flower arrangement choices. A garden venue might need different floral choices than a beach as you set the right tone for your special day.
• Time of year. Some blooms are only available during certain seasons, and it’s important to check availability before making any decisions. For example, peonies are usually available end of May/early June, which is when they’re at their very best.
• Fragrance. Select scented blooms, and they’ll enhance the overall ambience of your outdoor wedding, evoking memories of the day for years to come.
• Weather conditions. It’s important to choose flowers that can withstand heat or wind. You’ll also need a backup plan in case of bad weather. That’s why having an expert florist on your team helps as they can advise you on the best course of action.
• Local sourcing. Consider sourcing your flowers locally. They’re perfect for eco-conscious couples who want to reduce their impact on the environment and support their local economy.
• Budget. If you have a limited budget, ask your floral designer to prioritise your must-haves, and those that make the most visual impact. You might need to consider where you’re willing to compromise. By considering these factors, you can create a beautiful al fresco floral experience that will leave your guests talking about your wedding for years to come.
The wedding experts at The Mere Golf Resort & Spa (https://themereresort.co.uk) says: Al fresco nuptials can be both exciting and challenging. We hope our tips will help you on your way to your dream outdoor wedding.
• Weather. If you’re anticipating a hot day, consider providing handheld fans to keep your guests cool and for grassy areas, heel stoppers can be a saviour, preventing heels from sinking into the ground. Our wedding gazebo offers both shelter and beautiful views over the Mere lake, and our indoor event space ensures your celebration continues, no matter what nature brings.
• Technology. Ensure your vows and speeches are heard by all, especially in an open-air setting. Consider utilising a microphone to amplif y your voices, allowing everyone to fully engage in the heartfelt moments.
• Picturesque backdrop. Outdoor settings provide effortless backdrops for your wedding photos. With soft and natural lighting to enhance your photos. Your photographer can guide you to the most picturesque spots and help you capture moments that will last a lifetime.
• Communicate with guests. Inform your loved ones about the outdoor setting ahead of time. Advise them to dress appropriately and provide any necessary details.
Planning an outdoor wedding requires careful consideration. Let our experienced wedding planners bring your vision to life, ensuring an enchanting experience for you and your guests.
Sarah Boalch, wedding celebrant from Ceremonies with Personality (www.ceremonieswithpersonality.com) says: The first thing is to find yourself a celebrant who can create a super special ceremony to match your personalities and wedding setting. Many are very accustomed to working outdoors so will likely have some great tips and ideas to make your celebration perfect!
A good idea to avoid stress on your big day is to have a plan B! The weather can be unpredictable, so think about where you could hold your ceremony if it rains, or maybe have big umbrellas on hand for your guests if you feel like braving it – we’ve all seen that mushy movie scene where the loved-up couple smooch in the rain, right? Most couples who choose outdoor weddings do so because they love being surrounded by nature, so when planning your ceremony consider using sustainable items such as rose petals in place of confetti and decorating with natural products like pampas grass. Super-cute favours include wildflower seeds so your guests can plant them at home and be reminded of your special day as their flowers grow – the bees will thank you too!

Groomed Mobile Barbers have seen a rise in bookings for home haircuts and beard trims for weddings. Able to set up anywhere, Groomed Mobile Barbers bring with them everything needed to ensure your hair is styled, beard is trimmed and shave is perfectly smooth.
Owner Giuliano Dore tells us: “In many cultures, the bride gathers with her bridesmaids to have her make-up and hair done just before the wedding, but in the past, men simply queued at their local barber shop waiting for their turn. Now, everyone wants to have memorable photos, look their best and make more of the morning preparations. I advise grooms-to-be to consult with a barber about the style that they want before the wedding. A dramatic change may not be the most sensible thing to do just before you say your vows. Have a restyle a month or two before so that your wedding cut is just a tidy up and there are no shocks on the day.”

Choosing the right outfit for your special day will come down to a variety of factors: the style of wedding you’re having, the venue, the time of year and, of course, what your partner is wearing. To help you find the perfect look, we’ve asked Cliff Bashforth, the MD of Colour Me Beautiful, to share his top styling tips:
There are different styles of formal attire available for men, some of which are more traditional than others.
Morning dress: This is the most formal suit worn during the day and works well for all body shapes and sizes.
Tuxedo: A formal look typically used for evening receptions, tuxedos can be either single or double-breasted, and for a less formal look you have the option of adding a coloured tie and waistcoat or cummerbund.
Frock coat: A popular addition to the wedding scene, the frock coat can be made from luxury fabrics such as brocade or velvet. It’s best suited for average to tall, inverted triangle and rectangle body shapes, but can be worn with a waistcoat.
Lounge suit: This is a relaxed formal wear and is suitable for any time of day. If you aren’t used to wearing a suit during the day, this might be the most comfortable option. Choose fabrics carefully: a crisper fabric for an inverted triangle, lightweight for a rectangle and a softer, woven fabric such as lightweight flannel for a round body shape.
Alternatives: If a uniform is part of your life, you may want to wear a formal version of it for your wedding. The same applies if you have traditional dress, religious or otherwise. For an informal wedding, you may want to wear a lounge suit, with or without a tie.
Don’t hesitate to hire the men’s attire, but make sure that you have tried your suit on in advance
and that the sleeve lengths are correct, and the trousers fit properly.
Whether you want the best man, fathers, and ushers to wear the same as the groom is entirely a personal choice. However, the best man usually wears the same style of suit as the groom. What the other men in the bridal party wear often depends on the formality of the wedding. If you choose to have a page boy or ring bearer, make sure that he’s comfortable in what he wears to avoid any last-minute tantrums.
The way the men in the bridal party wear the various accessories that complete their outfit is important, and you will want to make sure they get it right. This is where you can co-ordinate or contrast colours and demonstrate some of your personality.
Shirts, ties, and cufflinks: The choice of shirt will depend on the neckwear. For example, a tie requires a standard shirt and collar, a self-tie cravat can be worn with a standard or wing collar, a cravat needs a wing collar to go with it and if you’ve decided to go for a bow tie, team it with a standard or wing collar. Whatever the type of neckwear, it should be made from silk so it falls well.
Cufflinks are only worn with a shirt that has double fold back cuffs. Beware of choosing jokey inappropriate cufflinks for a formal wedding.
Waistcoats: You can choose a waistcoat in the same colour as your jacket or a contrasting one. Consider wearing something different from the rest of the men to help you stand out and make your own fashion statement. As with any waistcoat, always leave the lowest button open.
Cummerbunds, belts and braces: A cummerbund can be worn with a black tie or tuxedo and is great for tidying up the waistline and disguising a rounded stomach.
A cummerbund should always be teamed with a bow tie, and you can have fun choosing suitable colours for both.
If the suit trousers have loops, these call for a belt (and certainly no braces), but if these are unable to be altered to fit for the occasion and there are no belt loops, braces will be needed. Under no circumstances should these be worn together!
Shoes and socks: Black shoes should be highly polished and not scuffed; black patent can be worn with black tie. Make sure any labels on the soles are removed before wearing them.
Socks should be worn in plain, dark colours and made from wool, cotton, or silk. Avoid man-made fibres to prevent discomfort. They should be long enough to cover your lower calf.
Boutonnière or buttonholes: A boutonnière is a small flower arrangement placed in the buttonhole. Your boutonnière should match the flowers or colours used throughout the rest of the wedding.
Boutonnières for the rest of the men in the wedding party should be the same style or colour as yours, but not exactly the same in other respects. Double check that the stem of the boutonnière is securely pinned to the lapel.
Make sure you’ve booked a haircut for the photographs. If you have heavy brows, they should be controlled – you may need to get your tweezers out! It goes without saying that shaving or beard trimming must be attended to at the appropriate time prior to the ceremony. Your hands will also be on display on the day, so treat yourself to a manicure the day before the wedding or do it yourself if you have the time.

My long hair is generally quite flat and lifeless, but I love the idea of wearing my hair down on my wedding day. What can I do to give it more volume?
Celebrity hairstylist Michael Douglas says: One of the easiest ways is to get some layers put in. If you’ve got collarbone-length locks or longer, then longish layers are best with the shortest being chin or jaw length. This way, you take weight out of the hair but keep the length while creating body. Having a fringe put in is also a great way of achieving more volume. Because a fringe is made up of hair taken from the top of the head, you’re removing weight there and pushing it to the front.
Blow-drying your hair properly is a good idea too. So, dry using a small, round brush from roots upwards. People think a big brush is the best way to create body, but actually a smaller size is better as you can get right in at the root lifting from the scalp. Blow-drying hair with your head upside down is also a good trick. Remember, you’re trying to defy gravity, getting the hair away from the head. The MDLondon Blow with a large nozzle and a really good bristle brush will give you a fantastic blow-dry with flyaway- and frizz-free shine and lots of volume!
You’ll want to look for resin-based blow-dry products containing PDP VA core polymers such as mousse, blow-dry sprays, and hair protection sprays. These can go hard or a bit crispy but as long as you’re constantly moving the brush while you’re drying you’ll avoid the worst of this. But bear in mind that you do need some of that crunchiness as it’s this texture that supports the volume. I love a product called Sugarlift by Wella EIMI.
Dry shampoos and dry texturising sprays are good at supporting volume too. I use Umberto Giannini Texture Boost on myself and on my clients. You can use it throughout the day, so if you feel your hair getting a bit flat, just flip your head forward and spray it in at the roots whenever you need to. Above all, you don’t want anything oily on the hair – no oils, no serums, nothing greasy as they’re heavy.
Another good method for creating body is adding waves. If you put a curling tong through sections of your hair it creates push against other sections and that in turn creates volume. But if you don’t put enough wave in at the roots the hair sits a bit flat, so make sure you concentrate the tongs at the root, which is where you want the lift.
On the big day, put medium velcro rollers in your hair and leave them while you have your make-up done. Try a bit of backcombing at the roots too, teasing the hair with a wide-toothed comb.
You could do one of these things or all of them and it will help you. What you don’t want is unrealistic volume so that it looks like a parody. You want to find a happy medium where the hair is healthy looking, so I’d recommend experimenting before the wedding until you find that sweet spot.

NAILED IT!
I’ve never had my nails done professionally, but I’d love to spoil myself for my wedding! There’s so much to choose from though. What do you recommend I go for?
Christina Henry-Winterburn from Warringtonbased Christina’s Nail’s & Beauty says:
For someone new to having their nails done I’d recommend a gel polish. A classic French polish with a soft pink base and a painted white tip, is a timeless look for a bride. Alternatively, why not try a soft porcelain white base with some sparkle for the added bling? Add your toes too in a similar style for a finished look.

CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews says: Which system you go for is likely to be ruled by how long you want your new nails to last. If you’re hoping to keep them looking as fresh on your honeymoon as they did on your wedding day, it’s best to avoid standard polish as this doesn’t take long to start chipping. Gel polish, which is set under UV light, or something even more hard-wearing is the way to go. Gel polish is generally regarded as being more gentle on natural nails, but that’s only the case if they are applied and removed properly by a professional. Never, try to pick or peel them off yourself!
If you’re looking for extra length and longevity, acrylics and hard or builder gel systems are the way forward. But beware, both can be extremely damaging to your natural nails. If you can’t imagine your nails looking any other way though, be sure to do your research first, as both options have their pros and cons.
Check with the salon how they apply their sets. Electric files can be brutal and if you’re not used to having your nails done, they might be best avoided. It’s worth asking too where their acrylic powders come from as those sourced from overseas might not have to adhere to the same UK standards concerning flexibility, which ensures any injury caused by catching a nail is minimised.
Have a think too about the length you’re looking to achieve. For example, if you’re hoping for a subtle extension, hard/builder gel should suffice as the technician will build up the product on a form, eliminating the need for glued-on plastic tips.
Similarly, removal is a key consideration. Both options will last around four to six weeks. Acrylics can be soaked off in acetone, which will soften the nail but at least avoids further excessive filing. Whereas hard gel will usually need to be filed off. Although some modern formulations can be soaked, there’s still more filing involved.
Whatever you decide, go along to your favourite salon or technician well in advance of W-day, have a chat, and try out the recommended system. Whatever you do, don’t leave it until the week of your wedding as a quick reversal if you don’t like it will only lead to unnecessary damage and a lot of stress. If you’re unsure in any way, I’d recommend sticking with the least radical options of polish or gel polish.

Social media sensation Sophie Stonehouse, is perhaps best known for her appearance on the fourth series of Netflix’s reality dating show, Too Hot To Handle. Hailing from Brighton, she was the only British cast member and made her mark as the group of risqué singletons were put to the test of abstinence in order to keep their prize money high and stay in with a chance of winning it. Since leaving the villa, she has dedicated her time to producing fashion and style content for her social media followers, now numbering in their hundreds of thousands. Lesser known however are her struggles with body dysmorphia and her fight to achieve body positivity. Being the centre of attention on their wedding day, isn’t every couple’s dream with issues such as Sophie’s becoming more prevalent, and importantly more commonly discussed. So, CWM’s beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, caught up with Sophie to find out how she overcame these personal challenges, as well as discovering her top health and wellbeing tips.
What will you take away from your time on Too Hot To Handle?
The experience really taught me about self-love and respect. It also taught me that the most incredible experiences in life, happen when you least expect it. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to go on the show.
What have you been up to since you left the show?
I’ve completely transformed my career to become a full-time content creator. It’s a job I’ve always wanted to do. It’s definitely not an easy one, but it’s very fulfilling. I’ve also found a new relationship since leaving the show, and I’m very happy.
You seem very at home in your own body. How did you find this confidence?
Body confidence is something I’ve definitely struggled with, and I’m definitely a victim of body dysmorphia. But, I found the confidence to be at home in my own body, when I realised that I was never truly going to be happy with it. I noticed that I was always finding something to complain about whether I was overweight or underweight. Once I learned to accept myself, only then did I truly feel at home.
Are you able to tell us a bit about your battle with body dysmorphia and coming out the other side?
I’ve suffered badly with it over the past couple years. Since being
a young adult, my weight has fluctuated year after year, and when I turned 18, I put on quite a bit. Then, as the first Covid lockdown hit I fell in love with fitness and completely transformed my life and body. However, that did come with its own disadvantages. I became obsessed with it all and would really get down on myself when I didn’t work out or eat right. Ultimately though, it taught me that no matter where I am with my body, I’m always going to want to change something whether I’m in perfect shape or not. I feel that now I have a happy balance and have accepted myself the way I am. I know that I want to look good, but I also want to enjoy my fried chicken burger, fries and a gallon of mayo without feeling bad!
How do you want to encourage and inspire women to discover their own self-love?
I think it’s important to remember that no one really cares. That’s what I learnt after suffering with pretty bad acne. I thought everyone was looking at me and the reality was that they just weren’t. As soon as you start putting yourself outside of your comfort zone, your confidence will grow. Another big one: don’t be mean to yourself, give yourself a break.
Wedding dress shopping can be a stressful time for those with worries about certain aspects of their body. What should they be looking for to feel more confident on the big day?
I think it’s so important to leave any expectations at the door. Go into the shopping experience with an open mind and a clean canvas. I’d be looking for something I feel comfortable and myself in. I think it’s important to remember that most people aren’t completely happy with themselves, and that’s okay. Go with what feels right and remember: on the day you really won’t care about the little things.
For many, their wedding day is the first time a couple will find themselves the centre of attention with all eyes on them. Some may find this uncomfortable, particularly if they’re feeling self conscious about their body. What advice would you have for them?
As long as you’ve made the day enjoyable for yourself as well as your guests, you’ll get lost in the experience. I think a lot of couples get caught up in making the experience great for their guests, but forget about their own wants and needs. I think it’s important to have fun with the
whole thing, don’t do anything or wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or not yourself. This is your day to shine. If you don’t like wearing a high heel and it isn’t for you, then don’t! Make the day perfect for you and throw on those trainers.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My typical day at the moment starts with a dog walk and a coffee. I live next to a canal, so I walk my dog there every morning. I then get back and make myself some breakfast and start my working day. After work I’ll try to walk him again before heading home to make dinner and relax. At this point in my life, it’s all about career and I’m happy with that.
Your skin is flawless! Tell us about your daily skincare routine. Surprisingly I don’t do a lot! I have very sensitive skin, so I like to keep it minimal. My go-to everyday skincare routine consists of my Garnier Micellar Water on a cotton pad, which I use to clean my face and remove all make-up. I follow that with Simple’s Replenishing Rich Moisturiser and Eye Cream. It’s really just that simple… less is more!
Are there any products you’d recommend to a nearlywed looking to get their skin in top condition for the big day?
I’d highly recommend GlamGlow’s face masks. They’re incredible and will help to get your skin looking perfect for the big day. For those suffering with acne, my top tip is: stop touching your face! I’m a picker and once I stopped it went away, very quickly.
What make-up products can’t you live without?
Cream contours and eyebrow gel!
What’s next for Sophie Stonehouse?
At the moment I’m working towards growing my platform. We have some exciting things in the pipeline for this year so you’ll just have to wait and see!

An on-site art gallery showcasing works of renowned Turkish painters and sculptors is available to visit, and couples can also create their very own masterpieces in workshops led by resident artists.
Boasting an unrivalled location on the Aegean coastline, the resort is also home to an all-day beach restaurant with menus featuring seasonal ingredients and local produce, a bustling bar and relaxing spa cabanas that offer traditional Balinese treatments.

Located in the South Ari Atoll, renowned for its marine life and coral gardens, the resort is spread over two islands: one, the blissfully peaceful adult only island; the other slightly more buzzy, welcoming families; both stunningly beautiful and connected via a 500m wooden bridge – the first of its kind in the Maldives! Getting there couldn’t be easier with BA flying direct from London Heathrow! Once you land in Malé, you can rest in the Conrad Lounge to cool off with a refreshing juice, bite to eat and even a shower if you so wish before you embark on your seaplane for a 30-minute breathtaking flight to your home for the duration of your honeymoon. And home it is. The resort’s friendliness is not to be taken for granted, expect warm smiles, relaxed vibes and no stuffiness often associated with such glamorous resorts.
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island boasts the nation’s first underground wine cellar, first below sea level bedroom in The Muraka (with the first underwater elevator in the Maldives!), first dedicated cheese bar and the first to open an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Maldives, Ufaa – to name a few of its innovations. It’s only right to be the first destination to experience as a married couple. Goosebumps, right?
I was fortunate to stay in one of the sunset water villas complete with a private plunge infinity pool allowing you to watch the sky turn from the brightest blue to blazon orange with a glass of bubbles in hand. Utter indulgence. If staying over the water is not your thing, the opposing side of the island offers fabulously chic beach villas with private pool just steps away from the turquoise waters that you’ve only ever seen on postcards.
Maldives offers worldclass snorkelling and diving opportunities. On the Rangali Island’s house reef, I was lucky enough to spot a manta ray, baby black fin sharks, who have kept to the shallows to learn to feed and grow, parrot fish, turtles, reef sharks and shoals of colourful fish imitating a scene
from Finding Nemo! If this isn’t enough, the resort offers an excellent range of water sports and boasts a PADI 5* dive centre. I was lucky enough to enjoy a champagne sunset cruise where we viewed joyful spinner dolphins playing gleefully in the waves; as well as our search for the magnificent whale shark which, like us, enjoys bathing in these warm, tropical waters.
indulged in a 90-minute session entitled Mindful Bliss. Watching the fish beneath through the glass-bottomed treatment room, my therapist began the ritual to restore harmony and balance. She started with the most fabulous back massage, followed by a mini facial using clear quartz crystal wands and finished with the entrancing effect of fragrant coconut oil being gently poured on my forehead and hairline (often known as your Third-Eye Chakra). My hair has never felt so nourished following this invigorating hair and scalp massage.
Foodies are in for a treat with 12 restaurants to sample. Wake up to room service or enjoy breakfast at Vilu, the à la carte establishment offering dishes from smashed avocado with sourdough to eggs benedict to sensational pancakes for those with a sweet tooth, or head over to the very relaxed Atoll Market, the resort’s only buffet restaurant. Here you can sample many international cuisines, everything from sushi to freshlymade omelettes and help yourself to a smoothie pressed-to-order or a fruit platter from the cold room.
Another first, dine below deck at fine-dining restaurant, Ithaa. Here, I was lucky enough to enjoy a set menu which consisted of silky dill-infused salmon, foie gras torchon, and miso and truffle marinated black cod fillet, all beautifully paired with a sensational Sauvignon Blanc – all this whilst watching reef sharks gliding past the surrounding glass walls. As well as these choices, there’s Ufaa by Jereme Leung, where you can sample handmade noodles and dim sum; and the island’s health restaurant, Mandhoo – expect freshly caught seafood, lobster and fragrant flavours aplenty.
Eco-conscious travel is all the rage and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is certainly getting involved in the promise to go green. You’d be hard pushed to find a single-use plastic in the resort as bamboo options (even your key card) are being introduced at every opportunity. Furthermore, and I was so excited to be a part of this, in 2017 the resort launched a coral regeneration programme, which aims to protect the surrounding reefs. With a complex eco-system and more than 10,000 species in the Maldives, the programme includes a coral nursery and a coral adoption programme for guests to partake in. The super-friendly dive team and I took to the waters to replant baby coral to flourish in their new home and hopefully thrive and grow. In six months’ time they’ll update me on my coral’s progress! Watch this space...
It’s safe to say the staff at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island will do everything to make your stay one to remember whether you’d like to experience private dining beneath the stars on your veranda listening to the sea lap around your stilted accommodation; or a private beach dinner, just you, your love and the powder white sand beneath your feet. For total relaxation, a visit to one of the island’s two spas is a must. I
Bond. The name’s Bond. No this isn’t a new film location of an upcoming James Bond movie, it’s The Muraka - a first-of-its-kind, luxury two-level residence with a master bedroom submerged some 16ft below sea level in the Indian Ocean. If money’s no problem, then honeymoon like Paris Hilton and go for it!
There’s so much more to say, but I’ll leave you to find out the rest for yourselves. Do indulge, it’s worth it. To book, visit the website: www.conradmaldives.com
WhileNorthern Ireland might not be the first place you think of when planning a mini-moon, having spent two nights at the incredible Galgorm Resort near Ballymena, CWM deputy managing editor Kelly Andrews is here to change that!
Northern Ireland’s premier luxury hotel and spa, located just 30 minutes from Belfast, offers the ultimate haven of relaxation. Set within 380 acres of parkland with the sometimes rushing, sometimes babbling River Maine running through it, Galgorm’s enviable location truly provides an escape from the real world.
The jewel in Galgorm’s crown is the Thermal Spa Village, which I’d go so far as to say is unique, as I can honestly say I’ve never encountered its like. So vast is it that you need a map to orientate yourself! It’s fortunate indeed then that it has it’s own app containing just that, plus all the info you could possibly need during your stay. My accommodation was a mere two-minute walk to the entrance, so I was up bright and early, donned the robe and flip flops provided, and was off to investigate. Despite the flight from Stansted the previous day being one of the most stressful in recent memory, I could already feel the tension melt away as I strolled alongside the River nodding a cheerful, “good morning,” to fellow guests as I went.
If your experience of a spa is a pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and a sauna, maybe a hot tub if you’re really lucky, you’ll be swept off your feet by the Thermal Village! Mainly based in the open air it features a Wonderland of treats to explore and experience around every corner. I happened upon the Riverside Garden first; home to outdoor pools, hot tubs, The Salt Cave, a cafe and the Celtic Sauna. In some of the Resort’s packages you’ll receive a complementary 10-minute Celtic Sauna Infusion here, which was the case with my shepherd’s hut accommodation. So naturally, I wasted no time!
We were shown into the sauna by our sauna master, where I was pleasantly surprised to find a floor-to-ceiling window along one side acting as a frame for the stunning, tranquil landscape beyond. It occurred to me that what this place does so well is allow nature to do its thing in providing all the beauty and relaxation anyone could wish for. The landscape is part of the experience, not just a mere sideline, but I digress...
This treatment is a traditional Aufghuss ceremony consisting of three balls of ice being thrown onto hot coals, each one containing essential oils to benefit the body in a different way (breathing, circulation and skin) with each temperature more intense than the last. The air was circulated by the sauna master who used a towel to push the aromas towards us in the mesmerising, dance-like movements characteristic of the ceremony. As Celtic music played softly in the background, it was easy to drift away. When the ritual was over, we were escorted to the firepit area, where we were served a cool and refreshing watermelon punch to bring the body temperature back down.
As I continued my explorations, I came across The Walled Garden and couldn’t resist stopping for a cocktail in The Palm House, where I was able to recline and take in the views of the beautifully manicured gardens. Soon though, it was time for my private Riverside Bathing Experience. From reception, charming host Kenneth showed me the way to Birch, my very own secluded hot tub for the hour. The water is heated by log burner to 39 degrees, and the comforting smell of the wood burning only adds to the experience. A glass of prosecco waited for me and I was able to order more drinks using the QR code provided, which would be served tubside. All of my senses were engaged as I listened to the calming music and the sounds of the flowing river, sipped on my prosecco, enjoyed the smell of the wood smoke, and felt the warm water relax my muscles – this was the life!
The Thermal Village is actually open until 9pm, but by 6pm it was
time for me to reluctantly head back to the hut to get ready for dinner. I procrastinated all the way though, stopping en route for one last visit to my beloved River House (with its infared beds and views of the cascading River), a hot chocolate enjoyed on the riverside boardwalk, and a spell in The Alpine Garden’s vitality pool.
The foodies amongst you will be equally as delighted by Galgorm as the spa aficionados since there are no fewer than three restaurants to choose from for dinner: Fratelli Ristorante, Gillies Grill and Castle Kitchen + Bar (the latter just a short transfer away). That’s not even counting the other options for afternoon tea in The Conservatory, where you can also find the Cocktail Bar & Gin Library, and McKendry’s, all up at the main house.
This was my first visit to Northern Ireland and I found the people to be some of the friendliest I’ve ever encountered while travelling. We honestly felt like we were among friends, and the staff at Galgorm can’t do enough for their guests. We didn’t have to make the walk from our shepherd’s hut to Gillies Grill once as we simply dialled reception and a short while later a thoroughly charming member of staff would be there to collect us, which was most appreciated, particularly when it rained.
Gillies Grill is reportedly a favourite amongst guests and locals alike, and it’s not difficult to see why. With a warm informal atmosphere, and hunting lodge vibes, it offers a menu sure to delight any palate. Interestingly, the menus for all of the eateries at the Resort are accessed via QR code, so you can peruse at leisure on your phone. No doubt developed during the pandemic, it helps to keep everyone safe, but is also kind to the environment cutting down on paper.
I opted for the barbecue pork bites, followed by the braised brisket of beef for main, finished off with a selection of delicious Irish cheeses. After thanking our super-sweet and helpful server, we made our way through to the adjoining McKendry’s. With a traditional Irish pub vibe, it’s also the Resort’s exclusive whiskey bar, offering an impressive collection of 300plus varieties from more than 21 countries. Here, we happily let our dinner go down while sipping on another cocktail and listening to the live music.
When it comes to culinary highlights, for me, it was breakfast. I’ll admit to being like a kid in a sweetshop! The spread was a joyous sight to behold with everything you could possibly dream of for the most important meal of the day from muffins and pastries; fish, cold meats and cheeses; cereals and fruit; to pancakes, full Irish breakfast, waffles and toast. Self control was most definitely needed!
Opened as a bed and breakfast more than 30 years ago, Galgorm has grown into the immense site it is today with 125 luxurious guestrooms, including 48 deluxe rooms, Junior and Signature suites, along with a range of more out-of-the-ordinary accommodation such as log cabins, cottage suites, shepherd’s huts and exclusive residences perfect for groups. But it hasn’t stopped there as it’s still growing with works currently underway and more in the pipeline. Even as I visited, work on a group of two storey cottages was nearing completion and land was about to be cleared for the new treehouse accommodation.
I was happily ensconced in one of the Resort’s shepherd’s huts during my stay. Welcomed by an electric woodburner cosily heating this home away from home, we quickly discovered all the comforts we could wish for were provided. I was obsessed with the huge outdoor copper bath, which I made a dive for as soon as I’d dumped my bags. The complimentary G&T and bath bomb, were much appreciated additions following the aforementioned airport hell.
For honeymooners though, there are two particular showstoppers that I would highly recommend! If you’re looking for ultimate luxury, Suite 1857 can be found in the original manor house and offers unrivalled views of the River from its Juliet balcony. Elegant and romantic, its rooms are decorated in brocade wall coverings in a muted palette, antique lighting, and French Baroque-style furniture, with solid oak floors and beams. It features a lounge area with sofa and two arm chairs for curling up in front of the TV, plus bathroom with free-standing bath and walk-in shower.
If a secluded, rustic, woodland escape is more your vibe the Shepherd’s Hut Suite is the place for you. Nestled in Galgorm Wood with the cascading River running alongside it, it’s luxuriously appointed with a lounge, mini kitchen, and bathroom with shower room and free-standing bath. But the stand-out features, without doubt, are your very own sauna and hot tub on the terrace. Enjoy a soak in the warm waters as you watch the sun set and raise a glass to yourselves, the newlyweds.
Nestled in 72 acres of tranquil parkland in the Staffordshire countryside, Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat is a luxurious property with lavish suites, spa facilities, lakeside dining and a wellness centre. The retreat offers a private location surrounded by unspoilt views of the rolling countryside, setting the perfect scene for romantic minimoons and getaways.
I felt a calming oasis as soon as I ventured onto Moddershall Oaks’ winding driveway. With the sun beaming down on me, I quickly left the outside world behind. The next thing I knew, I was enjoying an elderflower spritz while chatting to the attentive and friendly staff who were on hand throughout my entire stay.
With only 10 suites on-site, I was excited to see my accommodation, and I wasn’t disappointed when I entered the modern space. Complete with air-conditioning, a seating area with plush furnishings, a private terrace, a smart TV, a desk, and a stylish bathroom with a rainfall shower; it had all the amenities needed for a tranquil stay.
All overnight guests can book a private 30-minute session in the outdoor hot tub. I went for a late night dip, so I could enjoy the sun setting and view the beautiful stars. The water was the perfect temperature, with water jets and warm lighting to add to the oh-so-romantic atmosphere.
When it was time to rest my head, I quickly entered dreamland thanks to the comfortable king-sized bed and fluffy pillows.
Moddershall Oaks is more than just a spa; it’s a tranquil setting to enjoy quality time with loved ones. In the heart of the property, couples will find an outdoor heated vitality pool to enjoy year-round regardless of the weather. Surrounding the pool are comfortable loungers, providing the ideal location to read a book and enjoy a bite from the spa deli. I loved the views of the rolling countryside from the Kelo sauna and the calming setting in the intimate relaxation lounge with comfy sofas and blankets to
snuggle up.
The indoor spa area was my favourite space, with a hydrotherapy pool plus two overhead water jets designed to massage the upper back and neck muscles, while helping to promote blood circulation. Some of my personal highlights included the steam room, the 10-meter pool, the foot baths, heated loungers and the experience shower.
I was lucky enough to experience an Indian-inspired head massage during my stay. The talented beauty therapist used the latest massaging techniques to help tackle the problem areas in my upper back, shoulders, neck, face and scalp. As someone who struggles with tension headaches, I didn’t realise how much I needed the treatment. For 25 minutes, my problems melted away while I focused on the relaxing music and the calming aromas.
As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to enjoy a two-course meal at The Oak House Restaurant after hearing great things about the menu. Spoiler alert, I wasn’t disappointed! Using local produce and fresh seasonal ingredients, where possible, the talented chefs created a feast. For my starter, I went with the lemongrass chicken bao buns with apple and cucumber salad and a spiced honey dressing. I opted for the beerbattered haddock fillet for my main, with skin-on triple-cooked chips, homemade tartare sauce and pea puree – the flavours were exquisite.
Wrapped in my fluffy robe, I returned to the restaurant for breakfast the following morning – the perfect way to start the day. I enjoyed a continental breakfast followed by avocado on toasted sourdough and a poached egg before walking around the lake and relaxing in the hammocks. I was sad to be checking out of this wonderful resort and can’t wait to return soon.
