Spring fever

Hello lovely readers, and welcome to another issue of Your East Midlands Wedding! Spring is finally here, and I couldn’t be more thrilled! After being cooped up indoors trying to stay warm, I can’t wait to venture outdoors and embrace more sunshine! The time of year is all about getting organised and new beginnings, which is perfect if you’re trying to plan your wedding. Spring is always a fabulous season to tie the knot with more seasonal produce, fun colour palettes, plenty of natural lighting for photographs and stunning flowers to pick from. Gardens will be in full bloom, meaning you’ll naturally have dream-worthy backdrops to take advantage of – cherry blossoms are my favourite way to add the wow factor to stunning images. In fact, we’ve hand selected stunning properties with glorious gardens to give you a head start on wedding planning.

Ensure you have a back-up plan in place if you’re looking to exchange vows outdoors, as the British weather can be unpredictable. A marquee or indoor space will provide loved ones with cover in case of any April showers. Photographers can capture stunning images no matter the weather, so embrace the rain with a funky pair of wellies and an umbrella for the ultimate photo shoot. For those that have just started planning their spring wedding, keep in mind any national holidays or events such as Mother’s Day or school holidays, as many people will be making plans in advance. Before you go, check out our stunning weddings and shoots that are bursting full of inspiration. Here you’ll find talented companies, stunning images and wow-factor details.

That’s all from me; happy planning!

Calling all dog lovers! Check out this beautiful floral collar by Amanda Steele Flowers. The Coastal Wedding Co created stunning stationery to match the woodland and festival-styled shoot at the Sunflower Park in Gainsborough.

I have had the privilege of creating floral designs for many weddings, at some beautiful venues in the Midlands and further afield too. Each and every wedding is different and it is a huge honour to be a part of every single one. I love to use bountiful seasonal blooms - British where possible. I draw inspiration from the seasons and I like to include interesting textures and unusual details to make every wedding unique.

It would be lovely to hear from you and start your floral journey.

Multi-award

I love being part of a wedding day, whether its make up or hair, or both! My favourite part is seeing someones reaction when they look in the mirror once I have done hair or make up, I have to had shrieks of delight, hugs, smiles etc.. its so rewarding. ere is nothing that feels as good as making a woman feel good about herself, especially on her wedding day.

While there are many reasons to hire and hairstylist and make up artist for your wedding day, your wedding will be forever remembered through wedding photographs and the hiring of professional artists will help ensure that you are awless and beautiful the day of and into the lasting moments of your big day. (ps, your photographer will love you for it too!)

ROMANCE

Rhianne and Danny’s wedding featured a burnt orange colour scheme and rustic touches

Images courtesy of Brad Smith Photography

26

Rhianne visited the Oulton Park Circuit to watch her brother’s motorbike race in 2016 when she first met Danny, who was coaching a young rider. “We had a common interest, but we most importantly made each other laugh and just wanted to spend every moment together”, recalls Rhianne. They were comfortable together from the start, almost as though they’d known each other from a previous life. Danny knew he would marry her from day one and popped the question four years later in the beautiful Lake District. Rhianne comments, “I had a feeling it was going to happen that day; I had just finished doing my make-up ready for dinner, and I turned around to find Danny on one knee – it’s safe to say my make-up needed redoing! He struggled to get his words out, but it was such a special and intimate moment.”

SETTING THE SCENE

The couple’s wedding took place in October 2022, and they created an intimate and romantic wedding full of personal touches.

The lovebirds instantly loved Badgers Mount and its local countryside charm. The blank canvas spaces allowed the pair to get creative and bring their fabulous ideas to life. The bride comments, “With it being a small boutique hotel, I loved the idea of our guests filling the rooms onsite. It almost becomes a privately rented hotel without strangers waltzing around during your special day.”

The bride and her bridal party enjoyed an evening in the venue’s separate self-catering apartment the day before the wedding. They had a fun morning getting ready to make their grand entrance while the couple’s grandparents were picked up in the venue’s Rolls-Royce, which they absolutely loved!

Gabby from The Two Hummingbirds went above and beyond to help the pair create their dream day. Rhianne says, “Not only is she exceptionally talented at her job, but Gabby always suggested how we could reuse ceremony décor for the wedding breakfast and reception to keep our costs down without compromising the final look.”

The ceremony space was breathtaking, and the venue laid out chairs with burnt orange chiffon sashes in a semi-circle style. White rose petals lined the aisle, ready for the flower grandma to sprinkle rose petals as she walked down the aisle. Asymmetric plinths were at the top of the aisle, full of gypsophila and white florals with a cluster of lanterns with unlit candles around the bases. The beautiful fields surrounding the venue served as the ideal backdrop to the vows. Gabby captured a romantic and intimate setting for the ceremony and wedding breakfast while adding fun elements to the reception. She created a beautiful gypsophila cloud with disco balls that hung above the aisle, which later became the dancefloor.

The pair used the venue’s rustic sweet cart for the cocktail reception, and Gappy added love LED lights, bud vases with gypsophila and a sign that said, ‘His & Hers Cocktails’. The bride picked coco chilli mojitos while Danny opted for Jameson ginger spritz. They also provided custom cocktail toppers with frosted acrylic discs with each guest’s surname in gold writing, and edible wafer cocktail toppers with the pair’s monogram on.

POST VOWS

The wedding breakfast took place in a marquee, which Gabby decorated beautifully. The pair opted for a Santorini-style long table layered with a burnt orange and white chiffon runner to add texture to the wooden table. Gold-rimmed charger plates, champagne flutes, burnt orange napkins and gold cutlery added a touch of luxury to the setting. The couple wanted it to feel like an extra special family dinner, so they purchased two handwritten taper dinner candles. One had their names and wedding date in black writing with gold specks, while the other had a quote from their first dance song.

The Two Hummingbirds used fresh flowers for the centrepieces and scattered cylinder candles to add a soft and romantic atmosphere. Gabby added a warm white neon light and curtain fairylights to hang off

REAL WEDDINGS 27

a freestanding gold frame behind the bride and groom during the wedding breakfast. She added another light behind the DJ booth in the evening.

The guestbook and card table was at the entrance to the marquee with burnt orange and white chiffon, bud vases with gypsophila, tea lights and a frosted Perspex sign in a small gold frame. Instead of a typical guestbook, it featured personal photos from the couple’s relationship and engagement shoot. Guests signed blank pages with gold and silver Sharpies; this now is the most precious coffee table book at the newlyweds home.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

The venue provided the catering on the day and created delicious dishes that everyone enjoyed. Rhianne says, “The food was locally sourced, which was important to us, and the chef is known to be one of the best in Leicestershire!” The pair had a tasting session to pick the menu choices and went with organic tomato bisque with creme fraiche and basil pesto or country pâté with spiced pear chutney and orange-flavoured brioche to start. Roast rump of Cumbrian lamb or free-range chicken was served for mains with dauphinoise potatoes, carrots and Madeira sauce. Caramelised apple and a custard tart with clotted cream and toasted oats were for dessert, with ice-cold moet for the toasts. The pair provided popcorn, sweets and freshly cooked pizza to keep loved ones from going hungry in the evening. They also had a white Lambeth-style cake featuring their wedding monogram on top – All The Good Stuff Bakery did a fantastic job! The lemon, cherry Bakewell and Victoria sponge tiers were a hit with guests.

LOOKING THE PART

After trying a few gowns, the bride decided to get a bespoke dress created by AvaMia Couture. Rhianne says, “I met with Halle at her boutique and showed her my ideas before the team returned with the most incredible design. I wanted a dress that looked romantic and royal for the daytime before removing the sleeves in the evening for the perfect party dress. “

The bride went for a sweetheart neckline with a corset-style body, sheer panelling, a low back, a mermaid fit, plenty of sparkles and a front split. The team added a nude lining to create an off-white colour, and they sewed a handwritten note to the bottom of the dress from the bride’s grandparents. The bride chose not to wear a veil and instead went with a personalised ribbon made from tulle with their wedding date on one side and the song title that she walked down the aisle to on the other. She also wore her grandma’s silver pearl earrings as something borrowed and a sparkly tennis bracelet from her mum as a something new.

Danny wore the Jenson sky blue two-piece suit with a royal blue doublebreasted waistcoat from Marc Darcy. The orange thread in the chequered design matched the colour scheme perfectly. He also had sparkly gold shoes by Kurt Geiger, which made sure everyone knew when he was in the room! A white woven Moss Bros shirt with a burnt orange tie, pocket square and tie clip by Cavani finished his look off perfectly.

The groomsmen wore Max royal blue trousers and blazers with the Jenson check double-breasted waistcoats. The maid-of-honours, the bride’s sisters, wore burnt orange satin slip dresses with personalised jewellery and gold heels.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

The couple’s good friend James Toseland played the keyboard as guests took their seats for the ceremony, James Arthur’s Say You Won’t Let Go as the bride walked down the aisle and Van Morrison Brown Eyed Girl when the newlyweds exited. He even wrote them a song for their first dance, which he performed on the day. The bride says, “Listening to a song written for us and being performed live by a special friend is such a special moment, and we cannot thank him enough.” Rhianne’s uncle and a local Midlands performer Tann-I Browne then did a Bob Marley tribute during the cocktail hour – everybody loves a Bob Marley sing-along!

DJ Glamour and DJ LEB performed in the evening and played all the couple’s favourite music – the pair didn’t leave the dancefloor once!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

The wedding was full of memorable moments that the couple will treasure for years to come. The bride says, “We both never expected it to be so intensely emotional! Having such an intimate ceremony, writing our vows and all the other personal touches made it much more special!”

The ceremony was the couple’s favourite part of the day; it was everything they’d ever dreamt of. A bespoke poem by Ella at Lines to Rhymes, who is just so exceptionally talented, shared the pair’s love story in a few short lines. The bride’s sister Mae read this out at the ceremony, which was a lovely surprise for Danny.

The bride says, “My grandad walked me down the aisle and then reduced everyone to tears with his heartfelt speech. I’ve never seen my grandad cry except at this moment. My little sister Rosie, who is only 16, wrote a beautiful speech and read this out. She was so brave and made everyone cry again!”

When planning their wedding, the couple wanted to ensure they worked with as many small businesses as possible – the companies all worked hard to ensure the pair received the day they deserved. Rhianne says, “I have to shout out Alex, our videographer, who came on board the night before the wedding after a cancellation! He ensured we had all our special moments on video to cherish forever.” She continues, “I can honestly say Carina from Badgers Mount went above and beyond! Nothing was too much trouble, and the day would not have been possible without her. My multi-talented hairdresser Chloe was also amazing and made me feel so confident as I don’t usually wear my hair up – it just complemented my dress perfectly.”

Stacey at Vincent’s Florist created stunning buttonholes and bouquets. She didn’t just create gorgeous pieces but tried her best to source sweet peas, the bride’s grandma’s nickname for Rhianne growing up. She couldn’t find any in season but surprised the bride on the day with the flowers hand embroidered on some material attached to the stem of her bouquet –something the bride will cherish forever.

IN THE

countryside

Karen and James first met at work a few years before dating. After getting to know each other, they bonded over their love of sports and the outdoors – the rest is history!

James proposed just before Christmas in 2019 at Rutland Water. Karen says, “We made our way to one of our favourite spot near the water before James got down on one knee! We had picked the engagement ring together, but the proposal was a complete surprise.”

Here the bride shares details about their special day…

33 REAL WEDDINGS

I wore a Ronald Joyce dress called Dafne and my grandmother’s pearl necklace. The gown wasn’t what I’d imagined, but I knew it was perfect as soon as I tried it on!

I felt nervous in the morning but excited that all the planning would finally pay off!

Our goal was to plan a wedding that reflected us as a couple while ensuring it was memorable for friends and family.

We decided to get married in Stamford as it’s such a beautiful town where I grew up. We chose All Saints Church as that’s where my parents got married back in 1985, and it’s such a stunning location.

We chose William Cecil Hotel for our reception as it was close to the church, had on-site accommodation, great catering options and matched our style.

We organised a big red bus to transport guests from the ceremony to the reception, with a London taxi for James and me.
34

We went for rustic signage for the table plan and the order of the day.

We had small floral centerpieces in keeping with the flowers on the tables, which were named after significant locations to us both.

The menu was a crowd-pleaser with soup to start, chicken for main and a cheesecake for dessert.

Our four-tiered cake consisted of a Victoria sponge, lemon, red velvet and vegan chocolate flavours. We stuck with the rustic theme and had some peach carnations to match the bouquets.

Our drinks reception was even more perfect thanks to the sunshine.
35 REAL WEDDINGS
Our wedding breakfast took place in a marquee with minimal décor to let the venue do all the talking.

The groom and groomsmen all wore three-piece suits, but James opted for a sage green tie rather than a bowtie to stand out.

My bridesmaids all looked stunning in floor-length dresses!

We had a fantastic live band in the evening who played some great songs to get everybody on the dancefloor.

The entire day felt like an absolute whirlwind! It’s a cliché, but I genuinely think it was the best day of my life. My cheeks were sore from grinning at the end of the evening.

Everything was absolutely perfect on the day, and our loved ones made the wedding extra special!

A DREAM Lost in

Sabine and Craig had a rustic-style wedding at Hazel Gap Barn
38
Images courtesy of Chris Snowden Photo

Craig is a professional pool player and first me Sabine, who used to play for Derby County, over a game of pool. “He was just a friend at first, and I used to have absolutely zero interest in him”, says Sabine. She continues, “He made me laugh all the time and was just a bit of a bad boy, which I found attractive once I got to know him.”

Craig popped the question during a trip to Rome and completely shocked Sabine, who burst into tears and had no idea a proposal was coming. She says, “It was in the middle of the pandemic, and we were desperate to get away that year! We booked the accommodation through Airbnb, and I noticed you could book experiences too. So, I went ahead and booked a student photographer asI thought it would be perfect for getting a sightseeing tour at the same time.”

During their memorable trip, the photographer got the pair on a big rock in front of the Colosseum after exploring the beautiful city, where Craig got down on one knee. Sabine comments, “Everyone around us was clapping, and I was so shocked! Craig couldn’t have picked a better place to propose as the photographer, who was just as surprised as I was, took some amazing photos to capture the memorable moment.”

Here Sabine shares details about their special day…

SETTING THE SCENE

When the couple returned home, they searched for a wedding venue and fell in love with the stunning Hazel Gap Barn. The bride says, “When you drive through the entrance, you can’t help but fall in love with the venue – we knew it was the one as soon as we stepped inside. The staff were excellent and so welcoming from day one. Plus, the rustic and gothic style was just what we were after.”

The couple exchanged vows on 26th June 2022 and added as many personal touches as possible. Sabine loved planning the big day and worked hard to create their dream day to celebrate with loved ones.

The venue already has so much character with candle chandeliers and grand fire places, so the couple didn’t need to add much to decorate the spaces. There were many areas to discover and plenty of photographic backdrops to take advantage of. The couple had an order of the day made to ensure the day ran smoothly, which matched their rustic theme and had fairylights to add to the romantic atmosphere.

The table plan was displayed on a wooden ladder, with cards hung by string to help guests find their seats for the wedding breakfast. The pair named each table after sites they visited in Rome, with the top table being the Colosseum. The talented florist created the centrepieces, which featured simple foliage around lanterns.

When finding the perfect favours, the bride went to Pinterest for inspiration. She says, “I put matches in a little glass bottle, which had a tag that said, ‘The Perfect Match’ and a stamp of our names plus wedding date on the other side. I then used burgundy and blush ribbon to tie around the top of the glass bottle to hold the tag in place.”

On the couple’s chairs were wooden plaques for an added touch of fun. The bride’s chair said, “I do”, while the groom’s said, “I do what she says”.

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

Hazel Gap Barn has an excellent reputation for catering, so the couple completely trusted the team to create the perfect menu – they didn’t disappoint. Guests tucked into a barbecue and

39 REAL WEDDINGS

enjoyed chocolate brownies with vanilla cream for dessert. For the evening reception, loved ones enjoyed the treats from the doughnut wall, which said, “Donut leave me hangin”.

The semi-naked cake was a huge hit with loved ones! Red Robin Cakery worked with the nearlyweds to bring their vision to life while guiding them through the experience. Sabine comments, “The owner Sophie was amazing! As we planned the wedding in lockdown, she sent us a little box with cake samples to try – each flavour was delicious! We decided on lemon, Victoria sponge and cherry Bakewell flavouring.” The couple’s cake topper had a little sausage dog silhouette for their dog Barry who attended the day.

Guests gathered around the firepits to roast marshmallows towards the end of the night, which the kids loved.

LOOKING THE PART

Every bride-to-be wants to look and feel absolutely stunning on their wedding day, and Sabine achieved just that! She went for something completely different to what she had imagined when dress shopping and opted for an Allure Bridals gown from Charlotte Elizabeth Bridal in Matlock. Sabine says, “The consultant held up this dress, and I fell in love with the stunning train, elegant style, low back and amazing details – it took my breath away! When I first looked in the mirror, I cried as much as possible without smudging my make-up. Sidonie Makeup Artist and Perfect Silhouette Hairdressing were amazing and nailed my look.” The bride accessorised with a beautiful boutique headpiece and some stunning jewellery from Etsy.

Craig had a gorgeous suit from Moss Bros to match his groomsmen, but his jacket had the pair’s names and wedding date stitched on the inside pocket. He stood out from the others with a blush buttonhole and a pocket watch from the bride.

The bridesmaids wore a mix of burgundy and blush dresses – the mixture of colours looked great in photos. The bridal and bridesmaid bouquets were gorgeous, carrying on the colour scheme.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

The pair hired a guitarist, Jamie Mitchell, a fantastic performer to entertain guests. He played before the wedding breakfast and after the ceremony while the couple were having their photos taken. The pair also had a fantastic magician, Jester Styles, who entertained adults and kids alike! The bride says, “Every guest said the magician was a brilliant touch and how it was such a good idea to have him perform during the drinks reception before the food.”

There were also garden games to keep the little ones entertained, which included croquet, a hoopla game and a tin can alley.

A DJ and a saxophonist started the party in the evening and performed while the couple had their first dance to Wicked Game by Chris Isaak. The performers were great and played garage hour music for an hour.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

Sabine and Craig have many fond memories of their special day, starting with the ceremony. After arriving at the venue with her best friend and dad in a beautiful white Mustang, it was finally time to become husband and wife. “I was absolutely terrified walking down the aisle, and I was shaking all over once I got to Craig,” says the bride. She continues, “Craig looked terrified, too 40

and I knew how nervous he was! We wrote our own vows, so we dreaded that bit too!”

The couple’s sausage dog Barry walked down the aisle with the beautiful flowergirl, who carried dog biscuits in a basket that said, “Clear the aisle, here comes my aunty”. He had the rings around his collar, and his suit matched the groomsman.

The bride’s best friend Adam read a 20-verse poem for the couple, which was entirely personal. Sabine says, “It was hilarious and had everyone in stitches! From that point, our nerves just disappeared.” She continues, “Another hilarious moment was the best man’s speech. I was dreading this previously as he kept threatening some awful stories which I thought would come out in front of all my family! He didn’t disappoint, and the stories about Craig were brilliant!”

One highlight of the wedding experience for the bride was dress shopping, thanks to the owner Charlotte who made the process extra fun! By pure coincidence; her mother was the registrar for the wedding! Another supplier who went above and beyond was the videographer, and the videos created after the wedding captured the day perfectly.

Bring your dream wedding to life with help from the experts

DREAM-WORTHY SETTINGS

Once you know the budget and preferred dates, ensure you book your venue first. You’ll find that all other plans fall into place much easier once you know what type of property you have, as that will set the tone for the day.

Opt for a venue that offers a wedding planning service as the team are experts and will ensure you don’t forget any crucial details. More importantly, they’ll be there on the day to ensure things run smoothly and know what to do if anything goes wrong.

Your wedding should represent who you are as a couple. It’s important

to consider your guests’ needs, but don’t fall into the trap of trying to please everyone. Your family and friends love you, so they’ll be sure to love any plans you make.

Ensure to take a few moments to yourself as a couple on the day itself; allowing you to take everything in and savour some key moments. Opting to have a top table for just the two of you is a great way to do this – plus, it avoids any awkward seating plans for immediate family.

Planning a wedding might seem like a daunting task with so many different aspects to consider – it’s hard knowing where to start. We’ve gathered talented experts from around the region to help you create a flawless day.

FASHION-FORWARD

There are so many elements to planning a wedding. Deciding what the groom and his attendants will wear is as important as choosing the perfect dresses, but this sometimes gets lost in the fog.

There are five key styles to pick from, including tails, tuxedos, lounge suits, highland wear and Prince Edward-length jackets. Hired suits are not made-to-measure, so you'll have the luxury of time. You can leave the booking until you’re far enough along in the planning process to settle on the colour choices for the dresses and flowers. Our cut-off point to book at Sanders Hirewear is six to eight weeks before the collection date, but other suppliers may have different schedules.

Book a consultation with you and your partner. Don’t bring a posse; this is a chance to focus on what you want and not to be asked about the stag do because that will happen! Bring your shoes, a bridesmaid dress, lookbook, invitations and flower samples to the consultation if you have them to help tie down the neckwear colours to a perfect or complementary match.

LOVE AT FIRST BITE

Food is just as important as the dress for me, as your guests will be talking about how good or not-so-good the food was for years to come!

The key to a great meal is hiring a company with experience. So, check social media platforms and read reviews to get a feel for different businesses. Service is just as important as the quality of the dishes, so being able to work differently to suit the surroundings and requirements is essential. Consider what the company might need to ensure the perfect service, such as power, lighting, the space required and accessibility. Check if plates, napkins and cutlery are included.

Regarding the menu choices, consider different dietary requirements to cater for vegetarians and vegans – don’t forget gluten-free options if needed.

Speak to the team over the phone or via video call to review all the details, such as arrival and departure timings. Have contact numbers for the company and allocate someone from your party if you haven’t got a wedding coordinator to discuss details with the team on the day. Ask if they have a plan B in adverse weather conditions.

EXCHANGING VOWS

Couples opt for celebrant-led weddings over civil ceremonies for all different reasons. They might wish to use a venue or location not licensed for marriage, require a mixed faith wedding which churches generally can’t accommodate or desire a personalised wedding ceremony.

Whatever the reason, those who opt for celebrant-led weddings must arrange to register their marriage until celebrants in England/Wales are permitted to solemnise a union legally. To do this, contact your register office and request a statutory marriage service just before your wedding. The government sets the fee for this, which is presently £46, plus £35 each to give notice. It takes five to 10 minutes and comprises only the legal aspects of getting married, with identity and document checks to

RAISE A GLASS

The most valuable advice is not to settle for something that doesn’t meet your vision. It’s paramount to keep your theme in mind and to have your suppliers work to make your wedding dreams a reality. There’s a supplier out there for any idea you can dream up, and Your East Midlands Wedding is the perfect place to start when looking for the best fit.

When booking a bar service, speak to your supplier over the phone or in-person to get your ideas heard. If you want your special holiday cocktail to be served as a welcome drink, then have them make it a reality. A good supplier is flexible and will work with you to create a bespoke package that enhances and complements the beauty of your special day!

Keep your supplier roster as tight as possible. If one company can provide multiple services and meet your expectations, then go with them. Find a mobile bar company that can care for everything like us at The Occasion Bar Co if you want a full bar, welcome drinks, table drinks and cocktails.

declare you're free to and contract to marry. Most couples save their personalised vows and the exchange of rings for their celebrant-led wedding celebration. Some register offices offer statutory slots each week or have dedicated days each month. Contact a few register offices nearby to see where is better for you and if there’s a waiting list. Aside from the registrars, only the couple and two witnesses may attend – it’s also known as a two-by-two.

Afterwards, you can have the bespoke celebrant-led wedding you’re dreaming of!

BOOST YOUR SKIN FROM WITHIN

Raising the bar, St.Tropez’s new Self Tan Luxe Body Serum infused with a unique collagen-enhancing complex, responds to consumer demand for a hydrating, longer-lasting natural glow with skincare benefits. It works to firm, smooth, soothe, reduce redness and even skin tone while instantly hydrating skin in the most easy-to-use format yet. What’s more, it’s infused with the iconic St.Tropez Luxe scent, a fine fragrance with Tritech Olfactory Fragrance Technology, which equals no biscuity smell.

Having learned of its zero transfer attribute I asked Michaella Bolder, St.Tropez tanning and skincare expert, whether she’d recommend this particular product to brides, and if so when would be the best time to apply. She told me, “Yes, it’s a beautiful tan for brides. However, I’d always recommend to apply tan the day before. This way, you can be prepped and make sure you apply evenly without any worries or concerns on the morning of your wedding. It is zero transfer but as the tan starts to take, you want to make sure you’re super-confident, as it comes through over four to eight hours. So, always apply the day, evening or 24 hours before your big day. It leaves you with a beautiful rich, medium glow and with the skin being so hydrated it just beams.”

£35, available at Boots, Superdrug, Look Fantastic, ASOS, Amazon and all leading online retailers.

DAWN ‘TIL DUSK

Left with a hole in my life when my previous primer ran out I was bereft. Until Milk’s Pore Eclipse Mattifying Primer landed on my desk that is. This lightweight water cream makeup primer with skincare benefits claims to blur pores and control shine for a long-lasting soft matte finish, and I can confirm it does just that. It feels fantastic to apply and leaves skin feeling satin smooth. After a long day visiting London recently my foundation looked as good when I arrived home as it did when I left. What’s more, it’s 90 per cent natural, clean, vegan, cruelty-free, noncomedogenic, paraben-free, and silicone-free. I’ve found a new favourite! £31, www.cultbeauty.co.uk

OH-SO NATURAL

Founded in 1996, Ringana is a pioneering Austrian skincare company creating products so fresh it’s recommended they’re used within 10 weeks of opening. As well as using fantastic vegan formulations, the products also feature some of 2023’s most sought after active ingredients. I love the Tinted Moisturiser from the brand’s FRESH range, containing squalane. This olive-oil based ingredient is becoming increasingly popular because it helps to reconstitute our hydrolipidic film and is easily absorbed without leaving an oily residue behind. It works to strengthen the skin’s barrier and maintain hydration too. As a result, this gorgeous moisturiser creates a radiant, perfectly even complexion. Plus, the product covers the skin in a delicate tint, thanks to mineral pigments that adapt beautifully to its tone erasing small defects, redness and pigmentation spots. £40.80 (€46,90), www.ringana.com

ENCOUNTER THE ELEMENTS

This year sees perfume house Issey Miyake present two new fragrances: L’Eau d’Issey Pivonie (£68, 50ml) and L’Eau d’Issey pour Homme Vétiver (£59, 50ml). The two launches celebrate nature in all its beauty, starting with water, of course, but also ushering in lush, vibrant florals and the intensity of vetiver.

L’Eau d’Issey Pivoine is 87 per cent made up of ingredients of natural origin, while this proportion for L’Eau d’Issey pour Home Vétiver is even higher at 93 per cent. These ingredients are exclusively sourced in a manner that respects the principles of fair trade and are responsibly harvested.

The perfect duo for the perfect duo! Available exclusively at The Perfume Shop from 26th March, 2023.

TRIED & TESTED

Having keenly followed celebs’ ravings about Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream on social media, excitement levels at CWM HQ were high when a tub arrived in the office. Editor Olivia Gibson stepped up to try it, here’s what she had to say:

“This cream smells unbelievable and absorbs quickly, leaving behind beautifully hydrated skin, and after the first use I noticed a smooth and refreshed feeling. Fast-forward a few weeks and my skin now appears firmer and tighter too.

This award-winning product is free from parabens, soy, artificial colours, phthalates, sulphates and mineral oils – it’s suitable for vegans and is crueltyfree too. With skin-loving ingredients including guaraná, cupuaçu butter, coconut oil, açaí oil, Brazil nut and more – this cream is the ultimate body skincare product.” Find it at www.lookfantastic.com, £20

SHINE BRIGHT

I’ve fallen in particular for the Green Mandarin Aromaplastie Glow Booster Mask, which is designed to boost radiance and revitalise the complexion. A potent treatment that brightens and energises dull and tired-looking skin, offers the ideal pre-wedding boost. £37, www.facethefuture.co.uk

LUSCIOUS LASHES

LEGIT Lashes is Huda

Kattan’s debut mascara that’s been more than four years in the making. It features not one, but two full-size mascaras in one product. An innovative combo, it’s the ultimate multitasker helping to achieve the three pillars of luscious lashes – volume, length, and curl – in seconds. Each wand works effortlessly to give you the lashes you’re after, with both ends loaded with Huda’s signature extra black, Black-2 Liquid pigment. £24, https://hudabeauty.com

eSalon’s Silk Shine (£17) is a nourishing argan oil treatment that increases shine, strengthens hair and protects colour. Just a few small pumps (or one if you have short hair like me) gives hair an instantly radiant shine, while hydrating dry-to-the-touch ends and safeguarding against colour fade. It’s done wonders for the condition of my hair and a little does indeed go a long way.

BAN THE BLOAT

Professional nutritionists Wedding Wellness explain how to avoid untimely bloating on your wedding day

One of the most common digestive complaints is bloating, an uncomfortable, sometimes heavy sensation that can follow after eating a meal that for some, also results in feeling tired, unable to concentrate and having a physically noticeable bloated tummy. Not symptoms you want to endure on any day, let alone on one as special as your wedding. There are many possible causes of bloating, some of which come with additional digestive complaints such as pain, constipation and flatulence – usually an indication of poor gut health. These symptoms are usually referred to as IBS by doctors, but may also be the result of intolerances, allergies or other gut disease. There are however some simple, everyday things you can consider to help reduce that after-meal bloat. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, chatted to Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness to find out more.

CHEW PROPERLY

Most of us chow down through conversation, mid emails or in front of the telly without giving much thought to chewing our food. But, there are enzymes in the mouth that kick start digestion and if you haven’t allowed enough time for them to work in the mouth, it can make life more difficult for the rest of the gut to properly break down food, leading to irritation and bloating. Aim to chew each bite 20 to 30

times to allow the gut to digest with ease.

EAT AWAY FROM DISTRACTIONS

Focussing on food in front of you not only helps you to taste it better, your brain also has the chance to engage with what you see and smell before the first bite. Without the distraction of something else, potentially stressful, such as work emails, social media, or the latest crime drama on TV, your body is in a state of calm referred to as “rest and digest,” which is optimal at meal times. An otherwise engaged body won’t produce enough stomach acid to properly break down food, which may result in bloating and irritation. Take a proper lunch break, sit at the dining table without the TV on and put your phone away to allow your gut to concentrate on doing its thing.

START WITH SOMETHING BITTER

Ever wondered why a bitter green salad usually accompanies steak, or mint sauce is served with lamb? Bitter foots such as rocket, kale, chicory, lemon and watercress help kick start the digestive process by encouraging stomach acid production. This is especially important for meals that include fats and red meat, which compared to other foods, take longer to break down. Include raw and bitter foods with a lemon or vinegary dressing to start your meal and help your gut prepare for optimal digestion.

AVOID DRINKING WITH MEALS

It’s important for the stomach to be very acidic when digesting food, but drinking lots of liquid between mouthfuls can lower the concentration of acid, reducing the rate at which the gut digests. It’s recommended to drink 20 to 30 minutes before or after a meal to aid efficient digestion and prevent bloating. If you do like to drink with your food, stick to smaller sips rather than large gulps.

LOOK OUT FOR PATTERNS

If you tend to feel bloated after most meals, take note of what might be causing it. Some common culprits can be gluten or wheat, dairy, sugar, or fat-heavy foods such as red meat and fried foods. Compare how you feel when you don’t eat these items to get an idea of triggers or possible intolerances. Speak to a health professional for tailored advice and support on how to improve your symptoms with functional testing available for further insight.

ALL ABOUT THAT BASE

We’re having a country garden wedding in the spring, and I’d love to appear fresh-faced and dewy. How can I achieve this? Firstly, you’ll need to consider your skin type and the suitability of using dewy products. Otherwise, you may find your make-up doesn’t last and can slide off during the day.

The dewy finish is perfect for normal, combination or dry skin. Anyone with oily skin should always opt for products with a matte finish. You can still use radiant make-up if applied correctly to maximise the longevity of the look.

What you put on your skin and into your body does show on the outside. Keep skin hydrated and nourished pre-wedding to help achieve a healthy glow. Use a serum or gel-based skincare and primers to help lock in hydration. The Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter is an excellent make-up base when applied with a slightly damp duo fibre foundation brush. Use a cream or liquid blusher with a fluffy brush or your fingertips to melt the product into the skin.

Glossy lips give that fresh-faced appearance. The Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Intensive Lip Repair Balm is an excellent product to prep your lips for a perfectly soft and kissable finish.

Lastly, opt for a brown eyeliner instead of black for a softer look.

Q&A Beauty

Look your big-day best with top expert advice

BIG-DAY BEAUTIFUL

I don’t wear a lot of make-up normally. How do I create the perfect big-day look while still feeling like me?

Creating a smooth base using minimal products is essential to ensure you still feel like you. Establish a simple skincare routine as soon as possible with a cleanser, toner and moisturiser to keep the skin smooth and hydrated. Allow your moisturiser to absorb before adding any make-up products.

Apply a thin layer of primer using a flat brush or damp beauty sponge before pressing and stippling a small amount of foundation onto the skin. Add more product to any areas that require extra coverage. Using a small dab of concealer, one or two shades lighter than your foundation, gently press the product over blemishes and under the corners of your eyes until blended.

Next, use a setting powder on oil-prone areas to lock the products and set the concealer under the eyes. For a healthy glow, sweep a bronzer along your hairline and cheekbones before applying blush in upwards motions.

Use two neutral colours for the eyes and sweep the lightest shade over your entire lids before lightly using a slightly darker shade in the sockets. Use an angled brush with deep brown eyeshadow just above the lash line to create a soft liner. Then you’ll want to brush your brows with a spoolie to tidy the hairs up and apply two coats of mascara to your lashes before finishing the look with nude lipstick or a gloss.

We’re having a boho-style wedding; how can we incorporate this theme throughout our day?

Boho-themed weddings have an effortless, whimsical and romantic feel about them. Nothing screams bohemian more than a floaty dress full of lace with stunning long sleeves and a low back.

A tipi can create the perfect set-up for your bohemian style while bringing in many earthy tones within the flowers, like bunny tails and pampas grass. These colours work well with many tones like pale peaches, greens and even autumnal colours.

Adding vintage Turkish rugs, peacock chairs, vintagelooking sofas and throws can set off that free-spirited vibe when decorating your venue. Dream catchers and macramé also ooze that bohemian vibe and will work well within the tipi set-up. You could even use macramé for table runners.

The choices are endless when choosing this theme; even a woodland would work perfectly and has a whimsical feel.

ALL IN THE DETAIL

We’ve just started wedding planning; what are the latest venue styling trends?

Styling themes centred around the already popular colours of sage, forest and emerald greens, as well as dusky pink are always great options. These colour schemes combined with candles, foliage and neutral flowers complemented by touches of gold are very on-trend and will be around for a while.

We’re also experiencing a growing trend for a relaxed and bohemian theme with chic touches. Think natural elements meet elegance with dried grasses, pampas and other dried flowers with earthy peaches and pale pink tones.

Table décor will be set out in a more deconstructed, informal and versatile way to create many interesting features for your guests with various rustic gold candlesticks and glass bud vases with matching sprigs of flowers for that truly vintage feel.

Bright colours and fun elements are starting to appear in venue styling and décor, with pops of orange, bright pinks, reds and yellows.

My favourite trend is the return of glam disco balls, where the light bounces around the room and gets your guests into a party mood. We’re expecting this to be a big trend going into 2024.

TIERS OF JOY

We’re having a summer wedding and would love to incorporate the season into our cake. Do you have any ideas?

When I think of summer, I think of bright colours, flowers, fruity flavours and cocktails. It’s important to note that hot weather and cakes, particularly when it comes to buttercream, don’t mix well. Your cake designer will use their expertise to advise and incorporate this vibrant season into your wedding cake. Make a bold statement with summery shades. I love using colour to create a real showpiece that reflects your personality and excitement; this could be all over your cake, just one tier or even an ombré effect – there are many possibilities. If you prefer something more muted, add colour through your flowers and include these on your cake. Don’t worry if your favourite flower isn’t in season or readily available in your preferred colour, as sugar flowers can be created. Inside your cake, the season can continue with refreshing flavours such as lemon and elderflower, strawberry and prosecco or even your favourite cocktail-inspired flavour with pina colada or passion fruit martini!

MOMENTS THAT MATTER

What advice can you share when it comes to booking a wedding photographer?

When deciding on a wedding photographer, ask yourself what kind of experience you want. On average, your photographer will spend around eight hours with you on the big day. When selecting a company, you should pay attention to their vibe as they should feel like one of your friends.

When looking back at photographs, you’ll be reminded of your experience with your photographer and the emotions from the day. A good company will help you relive the feelings by recreating your story and capturing those allimportant moments.

At Frank Photography, I aim to give you a personal and bespoke experience by working with you to bring any vision to life.

BIG-DAY TREATS

We’re looking for the perfect wedding favours for our special day; what would you suggest?

You can’t beat a sweet treat as a wedding favour! Bespoke macarons are becoming a hot wedding favourite as they are beautiful and delicious with hundreds of flavours to pick from. The favours can match any colour scheme and works well with different themes.

The slightly crispy almond shells have chewy centres, each filled with a luscious ganache. These naturally vegetarian and gluten-free treats can stay fresh for quite a few hours without a fridge, so your guests can take them home to savour later or enjoy during the evening reception.

Everything has to be perfect on your special day. There’s so much to do and organise, so why not let someone take care of your wedding favours?

Styling advice for the groom-to-be

Choosing a wedding dress is only part of the story when it comes to your big-day styling. To achieve a coordinated look, it’s important to think about what the groom-to-be and groomsmen will be wearing too. What you choose will ultimately come down to the style of wedding that you’re planning, the location and, of course, the time of year. To help you create the perfect look, the experts at Suit Direct (www.suitdirect.co.uk) have shared their styling advice.

HOW SHOULD A SUIT FIT?

Whichever style you go for can make or break your look. An ill-fitting suit, sagging shoulders, or a bunched-up jacket instantly cheapens your look – so how can you tell if a suit fits correctly?

Shoulders – a perfect fit will see your suit jacket lie flat on your shoulders and not be too bunched up or hanging off at the edges. A good benchmark is being able to relax your shoulders easily and comfortably.

Jacket – a suit jacket should close without strain and not cause creases, bunching, or sag forward when buttoned up. Equally, it should drape smartly when open and not droop down at the sides. You should be able to slide your thumb between the button of the jacket and your stomach without it feeling too tight or loose. In terms of length, the bottom of the jacket should end where your thumb knuckle is, and you should leave the bottom button undone to allow more freedom of movement.

Arms – the sleeves of a suit should be snug but not tight and show around 1cm of the shirt’s cuff – perfect if you want to show off cufflinks.

Trousers – the trousers of your suit should fit comfortably around the waist without falling away from your hips. They should just graze the top of your shoes or even leave a small gap. Trousers that are too long will bunch up and spill over your shoe – so make sure you know your leg measurements.

HOW TO MEASURE A SUIT

Measuring for a suit can take a little bit of effort, but it’s worthwhile to ensure you look sleek and sophisticated on the day. Size up if you’re looking for a skinny-fit jacket and trousers, and don’t rely on old measurements – you’d be surprised how quickly they can change.

Measure and note down the most prominent part of your chest, the narrowest part of your

waist and from the top seam of your inside leg to the trouser hem. Then, slip on a jacket and measure from your shoulder to your shirt’s cuff. Men with larger waistlines should take this measurement where they would naturally wear their trousers – this will ensure a plus-sized gentleman can still get a comfortable fit.

HOW TO MIX AND MATCH SUITS?

When it comes to mixing and matching, the main thing to note is the colour of each suiting element; create a combination that works in harmony, complements each piece and doesn’t clash too much. Pair a coloured jacket with dark trousers or chinos for the perfect smart-casual look, or pair a classic tailored men’s suit jacket with a mismatched pair of coloured trousers. Whether you’re after a formal look or a creative combo – the options are endless. The suit has evolved, and it’s now acceptable to wear tailoring your way.

SELF-CARE Soothing

Our Social Media Editor, Gracie Leader, immersed herself in the world of Reiki to find out if the form of meditation can help you remain calm in the lead up to your big day

78

It’sno understatement to say that planning your big day can cause your stress levels to shoot all the way up. Not only are you spending a great deal of time (and money) to ensure every little detail is perfect; it also represents a giant life change you are about to experience with your partner.

That’s why, in the lead up to your nuptials, practicing self-care is more important than ever. Whilst self-care can look different for everyone (exercising, eating healthily or reading) one form of mindfulness you may not have thought of before is reiki.

Reiki is best known as a form of Complementary Therapy that focuses on energy healing. It works with the energy fields around the body and involves the transfer of universal energy, to be channelled from the practitioner’s palms to your body.

The thought process behind Reiki is that every living thing and their surrounding atmosphere contains energy, and so this can be channelled in a way to rebalance energy.

For a person, this is within the body and mind to support both your physical and emotional wellbeing. The physical in terms of aches and pains, the emotional in terms of feelings of anxiety and stress.

There is scepticism that surrounds the practice of Reiki. But there is a reason the NHS supports and recommends it as a hospital service and even if you are not a fan of spirituality, there is evidence to suggest Reiki may be useful to help manage mental health conditions, particularly anxiety, stress and depression.

Of course, I couldn’t possibly recommend Reiki without indulging in the self-care practice myself. So, in February, after a hectic and busy start to the year I met with Reiki Master, Georgina Hemsley. Georgina has been practicing Reiki for over 11 years. A qualified therapist, Georgina owned her own salon for 3 years specialising in massage, Reiki and facial treatments and a focus on organic and natural skincare.

“Reiki supports our emotional and mental well-being in many different ways, and can be different for each person, each time, Georgina explained to me. “This is dependent on what a person may be experiencing at the time of receiving reiki or if they have come for a reiki session for a specific reason, for example, to help them, in advance, navigate the sometimes overwhelming process of getting married. We suggest a treatment per month in the run up to your big day so we can support you from the beginning and you can enjoy the entire process right up to when you say I do.”

After getting myself comfortable on the treatment bed, Georgina explained how my body might (or might not) react to the treatment. She told me that some people feel very hot, others feel extremely cold, and some describe seeing bright colours or flashes of light. Georgina warned me it can be an emotional process and to allow any or all feelings to bubble up.

Georgina began the session with some guided mediation including breathwork and manifestation. She asked me to clearly consider my intentions for the rest of 2023 and place them at the front of my mind.

Your intention are vital when practicing reiki. Georgina encouraged me to ask myself “what are my stresses? Is anything troubling me? What would I like to receive?” I learnt, the more direct you can be about your self-healing practice, the more the universe will hear you.

I then received a temple massage to release tension and promote relaxation. This absolutely eased me into the right mindset for the rest of the treatment and allowed me to drift into a world of calm.

For the rest of the hour Georgina got to work – doing what she does best – using a combination of crystals, sound baths, and gentle touches to my pressure points.

At the end of the session Georgina informed me she had spent time rebalancing my chakras – noting my throat chakra was particularly unbalanced. She explained I might feel a difference in the way I communicate in the next few days - wanting to stay quiet or be more vocal.

“During a treatment, I disassociate myself from the physical being of the client. I am an extension of their energy. A vessel if you will,” Georgina explains. “It is not unusual to pick up on their feelings or any pains they may be experiencing during the session. I allow myself to be intuitively guided to move my focus to the parts of the body that need work. I clear this energy and set an intention to balance and instil a sense of calm.”

Whilst everyone sees different results from reiki, I came away from my first treatment feeling relaxed, renewed and with a sense I was better prepared to tackle anything come my way.

I recommend going in with an open mind and allow yourself to fully immerse in the treatment. Although it can’t be guaranteed the treatment will work for everyone, giving yourself an hour to switch off and allow someone else take your worries into their hands, can never be a bad idea.

As Georgina explained to me, she can’t recommend reiki enough for brides-to-be planning their big day. “We all know whilst our wedding is a magical day, the build-up can be very stressful. Reiki healing can help guide you throughout the planning and preparation, reiki will work with you to give you exactly what you need, so you can be very specific on your intention and what you want to gain from the reiki healing,” Georgina explains. “This could be to receive more support from your friends and family, to conquer any last-minute hurdles that arise, to ease your nerves, or to support your energy to feel calm and relaxed throughout.”

Caring for yourself and practicing mindfulness doesn’t always have to be seeking out these treatments however. Not everyone has the time, or indeed money, to meet a reiki master regularly.

Instead, it is important to find what works for you and build it in to your daily routine. Taking elements of Reiki into your self-care routine in the run up to the big day will help you to feel more relaxed and calmer. Self-care for you could reading, journaling or completing your skincare routine.

As Georgina is also the founder of Hemsley Organics she knows the importance of a good skin care routine. “Our Organic skincare can give you a well-deserved serotonin boost and provides an opportunity for mindfulness. Having a morning or evening routine can make you feel happier, as it’s all about the ritual and putting time and energy into making yourself feel good,” she explains. “Implementing a ritual can deepen that sense of well-being and prompt you to take just a little time out for yourself each morning and evening.”

Georgina and her husband Joe created the Anahata Collection to combine Skincare and Reiki. Feel good products that work to balance the plant-based extractions from the manufacturing process. Allowing them to be in their purest state of energy, as nature intended, supercharging them with their natural energies to enhance the efficacy of their benefits and provide a more spiritual skincare experience. The Provocateur Hotel embodies old-school glamour with opulent, intricate interiors, red and blue colours, soft velvet furnishings and antiqued accessories, including a elevator dating back to 1912.

Couples staying at the hotel can sample a delicious Chinese-French menu and a four-course tasting menu at the hotel’s Golden Phoenix Restaurant, helmed by chef Duc Ngo.

AFFAIR A grand

Louise Prance experienced the ultimate luxury combined with traditional Greek appeal at Rhodes-based Ixian Grand & All Suites

Approaching Rhodes by air, you’d be forgiven for missing a bird’s-eye view of the Ixian Grand & All Suites thanks to the beauty of Greece’s largest island, but for the eagle-eyed travellers you can spot the hotel due to its inimitable layout and luxurious beachfront private pool suites nestled luxuriously on the beach of Ixia Bay, just metres away from the sea.

Ixian Grand & All Suites is only 7km away from Rhodes town and the Medieval City of Rhodes, as well as being a mere 10-minute drive from Filerimos, one of the three ancient cities of Rhodes.

Overlooking the Ixia Bay and Aegean Sea, this hotel has the beauty of being adult-only, so is the ideal destination for a honeymoon offering total relaxation.

LUXE APPEAL

With 124 deluxe guestrooms with garden or sea view, the garden complex offers accommodation in 122 spacious and comfortable guestrooms, while the suites area is comprised of five buildings with 102 rooms and suites.

While all rooms offer a level of luxury only befitting a resort of this calibre, the aforementioned beachfront private pool suites are without doubt the way to go if you’re looking for a once-ina-lifetime experience, and I can attest you will wake up every morning to pinch-me-moments looking out over your private infinity pool to the crystal clear Aegean sea that stretches as far as

the eye can see. Looking for further wow factor? Enjoy a romantic soak in the bath and appreciate the floor-to-ceiling windows while watching the sun set over the ocean.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Talking romance, no honeymoon is complete without a romantic meal or five, and the Ixian Grand & All Suites has romantic eateries down to a fine art. Vis-à-Vis, the hotel’s main buffet restaurant, focuses mostly on the Mediterranean diet and the Greek cuisine, but also international food.

Milonges, is an open-air restaurant offers traditional Greek cuisine and is located by the main swimming pool, serving lunch and dinner, while Muza Htista offers Japanese and Peruvian cultures. My personal favourite was the Alazonia Suites Restaurant – while only available to those staying in suites, this stylish restaurant serves breakfast and dinner, with outdoor or indoor seating options.

Evenings were spent embracing the laidback Greek culture and indulging in a tipple or three at Truman’s Lobby Bar, which has a stunning terrace with views to the gardens, pools and the sea.

AND RELAX…

If you’re able to drag yourself away from the room, the pools and the idyllic scenery, then it’s almost a perquisite to try out the hotel’s spa, and Ixian Grand & All Suites offers one of the most tranquil I’ve had the pleasure of attending.

Offering massages, facials and beauty therapies, the spa also has an indoor pool and a Turkish bath, as well as a complimentary gym with a fitness instructor offering various daily classes – if you’re so inclined. I opted for a more relaxing pastime instead, and indulged in a full body

massage. An hour of total bliss, I emerged feeling even more relaxed, if that’s at all possible.

SIGHT SEEING

While it may be unimaginable why you’d want to leave the hotel’s complex, it would be remiss to visit a Greek island and not explore the locality and embrace the culture. We opted for a day trip to the Medieval Rhodes Old Town.

With walls four kilometres long, the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and dates back more than 2000 years. With a breathtaking history, the site features Medieval buildings, mosques, traditional fountains, oriental motifs, Byzantine and Gothic churches, shops, a market and restaurants aplenty.

We whiled away hours mooching inbetween the castle walls, picking up classic Greek souvenirs before sampling traditional Greek food – and of course wine. What could be better than enjoying a sun-drenched glass of white while looking at white-washed buildings before heading back for sundowners at the hotel?

No honeymoon would be complete without getting out on the water, and activities abound in Rhodes. From SUP fun, to romantic boat rides, to kayak tours. Tick the aqua box and your romantic Greek getaway would be really complete.

A SPA DAY Santa needs

Now, I’ve been lucky enough to stay at The Runnymede once before, although the warm summer’s day certainly wasn’t comparable to the wintry, grey November day I found myself in when visiting a second time. I wondered; did it alter my view having been before? Could I honestly find enough about it to tell all my lovely readers about an authentic experience – well, read on, because you’ll hear why it was second time’s a charm for me!

As previously mentioned, the ominous grey skies of this winter’s day (and the M25 car park), hadn’t set me up for the most relaxed of mindsets to start my night away at The Runnymede. Arriving at the hotel, I was a tad deflated to say the least. However, no sooner had I trudged my way through the hotel’s revolving front doors was I warmed to the bones with a cosy ambience exuding from the lounge and lobby area. A true winter-warmer, there was a huge log fire keeping everyone toasty, Christmas trees and decorations glistening in abundance, low lighting complementing the hum of people relaxing and chatting away – I was instantly enthralled.

The modern aesthetic of the hotel has been sympathetically considered so that style never surpasses comfort. The large sofas and seating areas are all strategically placed to provide snug yet social spaces to catch up with loved ones or enjoy as a romantic twosome. Attentive waiters attend to your needs immediately; it wasn’t long before I was relaxing on a plush sofa next to the log fire, looking out at the river – still picturesque even in the winter – with a cocktail in hand. My morning was forgotten, a distant memory, although I think the cocktail helped with that too!

Our spacious River View suite was more than enough for two people on a much-needed night away. Armchairs and a table perfectly poised to watch the river run by, an enormous bed offered a perfect night’s sleep, and the bathroom was a suite in itself: two sinks and mirrors, walk-in shower and bath – it was like your very own beauty parlour! I could have easily whiled away an hour or two in our suite, but I swiftly changed into my robe, grabbed my book and headed down to the spa.

The spa is accessible from the main hotel, with its own entrance and reception area it feels like a luxurious members-only retreat. Whether you want to get the endorphins going in the fitness centre – which boasts river views – or while away the time in the swimming pool or Jacuzzi it’s got something for everyone. There are also adult-only times for the facilities which is perfect for minimooners.

After reading a few chapters in my book while enjoying a fruit

tea in the spa’s lounge area, I was greeted by a therapist to take me for my complimentary treatment an ESPA Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage.

Now, I’m a bit of a tough nut to crack, not just because I’m knotted up like a coil, but I also find it hard to practice mindfulness and enjoy the experience. I’m also out of my comfort-zone sat there in only a towel – I even hide in the bathroom at home! My therapist Claire was amazing, putting me at ease, she was incredibly knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions I had; it speaks volumes that I was able to nearly doze off! I also felt the knots in my back disperse for the first time, I knew I’d had a thoroughly wonderful and beneficial massage. The Runnymede is perfect for a spot of pre- or post-wedding pampering, treatments include manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing and a variety of massages as well as half-day and full-day spa experiences.

When staying in hotels, I’m always keen to book into the restaurants rather than venture out. Both dinner and breakfast were served in Leftbank, the hotel’s renowned buffet restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the river. At night, the dark winter evening was interspersed with intimate lighting, and the hotel’s festive décor really came in to its own with an extra splattering of fairylights and shimmering tones. The food was insatiable, for even the most discerning of critic who may shy away from the word ‘buffet’ but this is not an average offering!

With all kinds of culinary delights from delicious antipasti boards and salads to a variety of meat and fish options there’s something for everyone for starters, mains and desserts. As it was a Sunday we delved in to a hearty roast dinner (which was also on offer) and, not that I really had room for dessert but they certainly went down a treat – I tried three of the delicacies on offer! The open kitchen, wood-fired oven and rotisserie also provide a visual extravaganza too, cooking right before your eyes. Breakfast the next day didn’t disappoint either. Due to the light flooding in, the Leftbank feels bright and airy in the mornings, energising you for the day ahead. Again, there was possibly too much choice of fare from continental to hot cooked options, sweet and savoury, healthy fruits and muesli. There was not one fault in the dining experience on offer here.

After a final coffee, gazing at the river, we were thinking about our day ahead in Windsor complete with a visit to the castle to see the Christmas decorations! Alas, it was time to say goodbye. I couldn’t quite believe the whirlwind 24-hours I had here and that was all down to the wonderful experience The Runnymede had given me. From the surroundings to the staff, the wellbeing ethos to the mouth-watering food, I was looked after, rejuvenated and ready for the world again. Thank you!
