Say he o to 2023!

Hellolovely readers, and welcome to another issue of Your Herts and Beds Wedding.

This year we’re already seeing showstopping nuptials around the counties with stunning touches and heartwarming moments.

As we look to the year ahead, I can’t wait to see weddings feature Pantone’s colour of the year –viva magenta. The shade will undoubtedly impact the industry thanks to its bold and empowering hue.

Congratulations if you’ve just got engaged over the festive period! If I could share one piece of advice for wedding planning, it would be to ensure the day reflects you both – don’t get sidetracked trying to please others. Planning your big day should be a fun experience where you find a theme you both love, a colour scheme to complement your day, a showstopping venue and talented companies who can bring your vision to life.

There’s a reason traditional weddings have been popular for decades. The classic styling, grand settings and formal attire will always create elegant nuptials year-round. But expect to see more couples breaking away from tradition in 2023 and pushing the boundaries.

If you don’t know where to start with the planning process, you’re in luck as we’ve been busy sourcing the very best local suppliers to provide top inspiration. Expect to see talented florists, photographers, bakers, videographers, venue stylists and more.

That’s all from me! I hope you enjoy reading this magazine as much as I‘ve loved putting it together.

Here’s to another year of fabulous weddings!

Olivia

ACCESSORISE AND SHINE

Jodie Gearing Bespoke Jewellery Design is a Bedfordshire-based company that has won the Special Touch Category at The Wedding Industry Awards 2023 for the East of England.

Owner Jodie Gearing specialises in bespoke handmade eternity, engagement and wedding rings as well as jewellery. Engagement rings often require a fitted wedding band, but the options on the high street are very limited. One of the company’s real strengths is designing fitted rings that also look incredible when worn on their own while fitting into certain budgets and desired styles.

With more than a decade of experience, Jodie will guide couples through the experience, helping them make informed and creative choices. Customers can use sentimental metals or stones in their design and often like to add hidden details like their birthstones or engraving inside their forever rings.

FASHION-FORWARD

New ranges have arrived at Cream of Royston, and the team are excited to welcome more stunning designs from Condici, Veni Infantino, Ispirato and Veromia. The previous season’s stock is now being offered at half-price!

Based in Royston, the company has been trading for more than 47 years and has an extensive stock on two floors to suit all occasions and budgets.

The year 2023 is shaping up to be very busy for weddings. Once the company opened in January after the Christmas break, the phone hasn’t stopped ringing for appointments for mother-of-the-brides/ grooms looking for the perfect attire.

Some people still look for a classic mother-ofthe-bride outfit, while others want something less traditional and opt for a stand-alone dress with a statement hat. Whatever clients are after, the team at Cream of Royston are ready to help customers look and feel amazing.

SETTING THE SCENE

Nestled in Royston, Minstrel Court is a stunning wedding venue now under new ownership.

Sara and Na’im Paymán tied the knot at the venue last year and fell in love with the charming spaces. They decided to seize the opportunity and purchase the venue when it was about to be put on the market.

Located in five acres of beautiful gardens set around a private lake, the impressive Hertfordshire property with adjoining listed outbuildings will wow guests.

The couple brings a unique blend of skills and expertise to Minstrel Court. Na’im studied natural sciences and owns various hotels around the country, while Sara’s attention to detail is unsurpassed. With every detail counting in the event industry, it’s essential to be a perfectionist to ensure all aspects of the venue are well-maintained to the highest standard. So, Na’im’s keen understanding and experience in the hospitality industry are invaluable.

Since December, the dedicated team has worked tirelessly to create the perfect spaces for couples to start their lives together. They’re constantly making upgrades to enhance this already magnificent venue.

Creating a magical experience for couples and their guests is an honour the new owners intend always to appreciate.

Situated on seven acres of picturesque gardens, Ware Priory is a traditional Grade I listed building with contemporary touches and architecture dating back to Medieval times.

The main Ware Priory building has lots of character and historical features, whereas Fletcher’s Lea offers a more contemporary feel. The riverside grounds provide the perfect backdrop to weddings and many photographic backdrops. Here couples will find river life of narrowboats, swans, geese and ducks.

The back lawns are well kept and are a great location for drinks receptions and team-building games, while the wisteria archway offers a beautiful space for those iconic confetti pictures.

Situated in what were the cloisters of the original Friary, the Priory Hall can accommodate ceremonies with 100 loved ones. With stained glass windows and a series of French windows that open onto the riverside gardens, the hall is the perfect destination for the “I dos” and receptions

with 80 people.

Alternatively, The Conservatory offers a bright and spacious interior with space to accommodate 100 people for the vows. The area was completely rebuilt during extensive renovations in the mid-1990s and is ideal for wedding breakfasts with 120 people or receptions with 140.

The Hadsley Room, part of the Lady Suite, dates from the 15th-century and boasts a superb example of a crown post roof. The large refectory table used by the registrar to conduct ceremonies dates back to the 14thcentury and is believed to be from the original Friary. The room is named after Robert Hadsley, who purchased the Priory in 1685 and his family owned the estate for the best part of 200 years. The location is now a popular space for intimate weddings with 40 guests for ceremonies and receptions.

Or why not exchange vows in the Riverside Suite with 200 nearest and dearest? The team will be on hand to help couples plan dream weddings and can even provide flower arrangements in the church, an organist and arrange church bells to be rung after the “I dos” for an additional fee. Weddings are always happy occasions for not only the newlyweds, but the local community too!

FANHAMS HALL

01920 460511 | https://bedfordswanhotel.co.uk

There’s a surprise around every corner at Fanhams Hall, which is the perfect venue for weddings.

The house never stops being a feast for the senses with a Medieval hall, Jacobean mansion, stunning surroundings and 21st-century mod cons all rolled into one. The grounds are a magical outdoor oasis featuring Japanese gardens complete with a tea house, regal water fountains, a wisteria walkway, woodlands and manicured formal gardens.

The venue has many showstopping wedding spaces to pick from. The Long Gallery is located up a grand wooden staircase and can host 120 people for the vows. Wood-panelled walls, high ceilings, original chandeliers and large bridge windows overlook the stunning gardens.

Alternatively, The Hertford & Ware can accommodate 130 and is a blank canvas space that matches any wedding theme. The mid-century Japanese-inspired space provides a slightly more modern touch with panoramic views, natural lighting and wooden windows.

Guests can transform their wedding day into a fairytale by saying “I do” amidst the trees, bridges, and blossoms with 120 loved ones. Exchange vows on the gazebo lawn and formal gardens surrounded by clipped hedges and a trickling water fountain. For something a little different, jump into an ethereal wonderland in the Japanese gardens and marry under the veranda of the Japanese tea house before crossing the bridge to discover secret spaces for those all-important photos.

Continue the celebrations in The Great Hall with 120 seated guests and 200 in the evenings. The space provides a big fanfare with a beamed ceiling, stone-framed windows, a feature fire place, intricate wood carvings and a harlequin-tiled room at the back that opens out onto the gardens. Or opt for the Lakeside Pavilion with 130 guests for wedding breakfasts or 200 for evening celebrations. Its Japanese-style theme is tranquil, bright and breezy – it feels almost like a zen gateway with nothing but the sound of the fountain on the lake. There’s even a private veranda outside so guests can make the most of the sun when it shines.

After celebrating all day, guests can retreat to the on-site rooms for a peaceful sleep.

BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL

Mikey and Erica had a relaxed wedding full of wildflowers

Images courtesy of AD Photography

28

Mikey and Erica shared mutual friends while growing up but became closer during their teens. As life got in the way, the pair drifted apart before rekindling their friendship a year or two later and started dating after realising they shared something more than a friendship.

Mikey popped the questions in 2020 after setting up a marquee at Erica's family home. He added romantic touches with fairylights, photos of them both, candles and Erica's favourite music. She says, “We pulled up to the drive, and I saw a line of candles leading into the garden – I started shaking with excitement. He asked me to be his wife to a recording my friend made of England by The National and I was shocked! We had been speaking about this moment for ten years and had even picked out my engagement ring back in 2014 when I was at university in London.”

SETTING THE SCENE

The couple worked as a team to create their dream day surrounded by loved ones. The bride had always wanted to get married in her local church, and luckily Mikey supported this. She says, “We aren’t particularly religious people, but the church represents more than that; it’s a place where the community comes together in good and bad times. Plus, most guests didn't have to travel too far.”

When looking for a venue for their reception, the couple fell in love with The Gardens at Polehanger. Erica comments, “We loved the ability to create our dream day with help and support from suggested vendors – the team at White Button Weddings were brilliant. We loved how the venue had different pockets of space, but overall was small enough to still feel intimate.”

When searching for favours, the gifts needed to be personal and meaningful. So, the pair decided that a donation to their local hospice (St Johns in Moggerhanger) on behalf of guests was perfect. Erica says, “My dad died when I was eight, and we spent some time at that hospice. It wasn’t just a personal touch but was a way of bringing the memory of my dad to the day.”

The lovebirds hired an incredible yurt from Funky Monkey Tents and the structure was enough to wow. They also had a little table in a stretch tent, which was a last-minute hire due to the heat, with some photos of grandparents and the bride’s dad.

The flowers on the day were from the incredible Flowers at 58. Owner Becky asked the couple about their theme and brought their vision to life. The florist put together small jars for the church pew ends and a huge milk churn full of colour. Despite the scorching 36-degree heat, the blooms still looked amazing.

The couple decided they didn’t want a big cake and opted for some beautiful vegan sunflower cupcakes instead. “We felt our guests were more likely to eat these than a big slice of cake – and this turned out to be a big success", says the bride.

Along with colour being a huge part of the wedding, the couple also had to incorporate Mikey’s love of Liverpool FC! The bride says, “We had the Champions League theme tune played before the service began, and then I walked down the aisle to You’ll Never Walk Alone.” The pair also designed their order of services with a football twist and called it a match of the day programme. The pair had 14 tables for the wedding breakfast, and Mikey picked out his favourite Liverpool players for the table names. Every guest had a little personal note written by the couple; this could have been an inside joke, a thank you or just a sentence summing up how important they are to the lovebirds. A coach transported guests to the wedding while the bride travelled to the venue in Mikey’s first car for a fun and quirky touch. The pair spent many hours driving around and chatting in the car when they were first friends – it's now the first car they got in together as a newly

married couple!

Mikey and Erica have been vegans for seven years and have always loved food. Chloe from White Button Weddings recommended Roger from the Chef’s Table, who was remarkable. The couple didn’t want a traditional sit-down meal and had always loved the food vans and street food at festivals. So they had two hours of open service where guests could come and get food when they were hungry. The katsu curry and chocolate churros were highlights for the pair.

The Hogless Roast provided vegan mac and cheese, dirty hash browns and a hogless burger with vegan pork, apple sauce and vegan crackling in the evenings. Erica says, “The team were incredibly professional, to the point that we didn’t even see them setting up. We heard they were a huge hit with our guests, which was just what we wanted.”

LOOKING THE PART

The bride looked stunning in a Madi Lane dress called Andie, which she purchased from Angelica Bridal. She paired the gown with a singletiered rose veil and a rose gold headpiece. She accessorised with pearly clip-on earrings, her engagement ring, her grandma’s ring, a sunflower bracelet gifted by the groom and white bridal shoes for the daytime before changing into some white pumps in the evening. Erica says, “Although I caught glimpses of myself at several different stages during the morning, it wasn’t until I had the dress and veil on that I had time to look at myself properly. I’ve never had buckets of confidence in my appearance, but I had never felt so beautiful!”

Mikey didn’t want to stand out too much from the groomsmen, so they all wore slim-fit herringbone suits with beautiful sage ties and pocket squares. Becky at Flowers at 58 put together buttonholes for everyone, which were small and colourful.

The couple decided on sage green dresses for the bridesmaids to complement the ties and flowers. The bride comments, “I wanted to ensure that each of my beautiful friends had a dress they felt happy with on the day. I sent them a link to around 10 styles and told them to pick what they’d feel most happy in!” With the weather reaching 36 degrees in the day, the lovebirds encouraged the wedding party to change out of their dresses or suits if they wanted to get into something more comfortable after the photo session.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

For entertainment, The Hampstead Ensemble played some of the couple’s favourite pieces before the church service. Think a mixture of football music, Harry Potter, Coldplay and The Beatles! They also played during the drinks reception and were absolutely incredible.

The bride’s oldest friend Elliot played England by The National during the first dance, the same song he had recorded for the pair when the couple got engaged. He then performed a set and was utterly incredible – guests were blown away by his talent. Erica says, “Elliot is the lead in a Queen tribute band and captivates the audience in a very Freddy way –he started the night with a bang!"

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

The couple were both very excited about the day! The bride woke up happy and relaxed in the morning – she loved being pampered and surrounded by her favourite women. She says, “There were several moments throughout the day when we stood together and tried to soak it all in. We both love hosting; this was a chance to have our loved ones in one place.”

Walking to the church with her bridesmaids, mum and uncle was a magical moment the bride will always treasure. Quite a lot of neighbours came out to watch and wish her well. Mikey loved having time with their wonderful photographer and videographer just before the first dance. He says, “Other special moments were playing tennis with my groomsmen the morning before we left for the church and, of course, seeing Erica walk down the aisle!”

LOVE IN BLOOM

The Barn at Brook End Green Farm was the perfect location for Lauren and Chris’s wedding Images courtesy of Tara Gillen Photography

From the moment Lauren and Chris met, the couple’s relationship has always been effortless with plenty of fun moments and laughter. After Chris bought a ring and asked Lauren’s dad for permission, he popped the question at home in front of their daughters. It was a very relaxed proposal and was a complete surprise for Lauren. Here the bride shares details about their special day…

REAL WEDDINGS 35

Our number one goal when planning our wedding was for the day to be family-friendly, relaxed and fun for everyone.

The Barn at Brook End Green Farm was the perfect setting! My dad’s uncle owns the property and I will forever have many happy memories there.

Our wow-factor blooms were grown and cut by Jane at Hay Lane Flowers. The florals were one of my favourite parts of the day and brought our colour scheme together.

We had a three-tiered sponge cake with lemon, cookies and cream and pink champagne flavours.

We displayed the names on gold envelopes and provided a pen and a little card for each person to write a message or advice on. Every year on our anniversary, we can sit and open the corresponding envelop and remember our wedding day.

I travelled in an eight-seater Asquith while Chris drove in a Jaguar S-Type, both from MC Wedding Cars.

36

Lisa Roberts Catering provided a relaxed barbecue for the day and a cheese table with all the extras in the evening – the food was incredible!

I wore a Stella York gown from Butterworths Bridal, which not only felt amazing but was so comfortable too! I accessorised with a cathedral-length veil, a hair comb and jewellery from Baker Brothers Diamonds.

The bridesmaids looked beautiful in floor-length chiffon gowns, while the flowergirls wore white dresses with matching emerald green sashes.

Chris wore a custom three-piece suit with our wedding date stitched inside. The groomsmen and our dads wore matching attire but without a waistcoat. Each picked a different lining and personal embroidery on the inside.

A female singer and a male guitarist performed throughout the day. We were contacted by so many people after the wedding asking for the band’s details.

We hired a magician who blended in with loved ones and did close up magic – our guests loved him!

REAL WEDDINGS 37

We surprised everyone before our first look and dressed Chris’s dad in a wedding dress. When Chris turned around expecting me, his dad was there in all his glory – everyone had a good giggle!

Our photographer Tara went above and beyond. She did not miss a thing and took loads of amazing shots.

The speeches will never be forgotten! My sister and the best man had everyone in stitches, while the groom and dad had everyone crying.

Love of my life

Tom and Hannah had a stunning wedding surrounded by their nearest and dearest Images courtesy of Fairytale Wedding Photos

Tom and Hannah met at Aberystwyth University and grew close over the years. Tom loved Hannah’s strong character and independence, while she loved his kindness and protective nature.

When the pair accepted the keys to their first house, Tom wanted to make the milestone even more special by proposing – Hannah was over the moon!

Here Tom shares details about their special day…

41 REAL WEDDINGS

When planning the wedding, we aimed to create a day personal to us while ensuring loved ones felt comfortable.

We had a gut feeling that Essendon Country Club was the perfect reception venue, which was confirmed when viewing the property.

We discussed our favourite florals and plants with our florist, who then suggested and guided us through potential options for our wedding flowers.

The florist also provided blooms for our centrepieces and a rail garland for the stairs. We tied the knot at Hannah’s local and childhood church.
42
Dress it Yourself added ceiling drapes with fairylights to The Main Hall.

Our three-tiered cake featured a Victoria sponge, chocolate and red velvet flavours –this was a gift from my parents.

Our venue provided the catering as part of our package; the food was excellent and positively received by our guests.

The table names were based on locations important to us and included photographs we’d taken.

We felt nervous and apprehensive as the day felt surreal after delaying the original date by a year due to Covid-19 restrictions.

My best man and I wore grey suits with decorative waistcoats, while the other groomsmen wore plain waistcoats. MB Executive Chauffeur Services provided the transport on the day.
43
REAL WEDDINGS

The bridesmaids wore dusty blue chiffon dresses with their choice of shoes.

We used the house DJ at Essendon Country Club to keep guests entertained. The company was a big hit with guests.

A moment that stood out to the bride was seeing me in the church as she walked down the aisle.

The bride wore a floor-length dress in ivory with satin under layers and added lace shoulders for a more classic look. She accessorised with floral jewellery and Rainbow Club shoes.

We both felt like time was rushing by on the day!

Walking over the bridge before stopping just the two of us while our photographer captured the moment was a real highlight.

My grandfather’s speech made the day extra special. Due to a long-term degenerative illness, he couldn’t make the journey to be present but sent my brother (the best man) with his speech and detailed instructions on how it was to be read. He also requested we make sure the ceremony and speech were filmed so he could watch it back.

Local experts share 2023 venue styling trends to help create wow-factor weddings

Planning the venue styling for your wedding day is a fun experience where you can think outside the box to create your dream style – there are no rules! By incorporating your colour scheme and theme to tie the whole day together, you can make the perfect touches that will get guests talking for years to come. To help inspire, we’ve selected some of the top experts to share upcoming trends to transform venues – enjoy! https://redpeacockphotography.co.uk www.suzyelizabethphotography.co.uk www.suzyelizabethphotography.co.uk

Shane Maple at Maples Flowers

Every year there are new colours and trends –2023 is no exception!

Here at Maples Flowers, we’re already seeing many great ideas that people are moving forward with as they plan their special day. The colour dusty blue appears to be very popular for our 2023 couples. Blue is not usually a colour you'd associate with a wedding unless used correctly. Dusty blue is complemented very well by classic greens, whites and ivory shades. As a general rule, it's essential not to use too much of any colour.

We're also seeing a trend towards more loose and relaxed styling with flower arrangements; this helps create a relaxed and informal atmosphere and works well with classic manor house venues. Many couples are opting for more foliage in their arrangements to create a more classic countryside style.

Check out: https://maplesflowers.co.uk

Samantha Burke at Samsa May's

Based on the Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire border, we specialise in wedding styling, coordination and prop hire – so we've seen some growing trends for 2023.

There's an increasing demand for beautiful barn weddings with rustic character, historical features and stunning grounds. The colour schemes for 2023 weddings will reflect this demand with a mixture of sage green, blush pink, autumnal orange, deep burgundy and ivory tones. Pair these beautiful colours and theme with pampas grass, macramé or even Disney-inspired touches. Think a delicate rose placed in a dome with green foliage. This style even works well with rainbow colours for a captivating may day-inspired wedding.

Shimmering golds, coppers, whites and wooden styles will create a romantic, warm and elegant feel to your wedding day while bringing out the best of the venue. Add the all-important finishing touches with subtle votives, taper candle holders, jam jars or bud vases in gold, silver or brass. These can be placed on reception tables, in the welcome area or around the grounds.

VENUE STYLING 47

Gemma Lander at The White Emporium

After the last couple of turbulent years, 2023 shows a resurgence in maximalism interior trends. For weddings, this will mean selecting key areas to throw the budget at for the ultimate wow factor.

We will see uplifting and bright colour palettes with many tonal variations of the same colour. For example, purple in every shade. We will see light to dark shades across various blooms, but seasonality and locally sourced produce will feature highly on couples’ priorities.

Gold has dominated the décor and interior scene for a while, but this year we're see more silver and metallic highlights being used with disco balls, fringing, foils and silver wedding dresses.

https://sanshinephotography.com

Drapes and fringing will become more expressive and limitless as the initial wow factor of a room becomes key. Fabrics, colours, textures and lighting will clash and dance together in an artistic statement.

Finally, in contrast to the loudness of the above trends, we will see wicker as a texture become more popular – less '70s nostalgia and more modern. With a relaxed yet undeniably chic feel, it’s the perfect accompaniment for the natural earthy shades such as paprika and terracotta that will be emerging.

Tanya Davies at Apple Blossom Flowers

There has been an increasing number of couples focusing on an all-white colour palette with additions of foliage for a timeless, classic and elegant look – it’s easy to see why this trend will continue into 2023. However, also expect to see an explosion of colour at many weddings with bright and pastel floral arrangements for a real celebration of life and love.

Large-scale installations are a floral trend on the rise in 2023 and are more effective than many smaller arrangements, creating incredible photo opportunities. Grand ceremony florals such as organic meadow-style arrangements, statement arches, moon gates or floral columns are fantastic ways to add the wow factor. These can often be repurposed elsewhere after the ceremony, either behind the top table or as a photo backdrop. Many couples are opting for banqueting-style tables rather than traditional round tables, and sharing platters are becoming popular. Adding elevated floral displays to long trestle tables are a great way to add drama while ensuring there's enough room for food and drink.

Discover more showstopping ways to add the wow factor to your special day

We’re seeing more couples being bold with design options. Styling a venue with a blank canvas might seem daunting, but it’s the perfect way to make your day even more personal while matching your theme and colour palette. Lovebirds are thinking outside the box and researching different ways to transform their venue both inside and out by creating different zones, such as a relaxing lounge area for those wanting a catch-up.

Pairs are saying bye to single-use plastics and are opting for more sustainable options. Environmentally friendly weddings are becoming essential in 2023, with many couples hiring props and using recyclable or reusable items. Think ribbons, cotton fabrics, glass jars, biodegradable confetti, wildflower seed paper, mirrors, barrels, old ladders or crates. After the big day, lovebirds are donating their wedding pieces to give the items a new home.

We’ve seen a rise in those using dried flowers in the last few months and expect this to continue in 2023. It’s a cost-effective and eco-friendly way of incorporating a pop of colour into your day. Plus, you can keep the blooms long after your special day.

Expect to see streamers and drapes used this year with metallic tones for the ultimate disco vibes. These fun touches are the perfect way to incorporate your colour scheme. Pick bold and bright streamers to march a retro or festival-themed day. For those having elegant boho-style weddings, drapes keep thing soft and romantic.

COLOUR OF THE YEAR

We must talk about Pantone’s colour of the year, viva magenta! The stunning shade is a deep crimson red that provides the perfect mix of warm and cool tones. Be bold and fearless with this striking shade that will make an impact. Other bold and bright shades will be trending this year, especially during summer, and textures are so in!

Sustainable STYLES

These designers offer something green as they promote their latest collections created using eco-friendly fabrics

SANYUKTA SHRESTHA

Sanyukta (seen here on the red carpet with her daughter, Ameya at the recent world premiere of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio) is one of the UK’s leading sustainable wedding dress designers with a conscience being among the first to introduce sustainability to the bridal industry with the launch of her bridal collection in 2011. In 2022 came her Ready to Wed 2022 collection of ethical, vegan wedding dresses. Each one was handmade by highly skilled artisans in Nepal from hand-spun and hand-loomed 100% Fairtrade bamboo; 100% organic cotton; TENCEL (which is a luxe floaty vegan eco-fibre made from the cellulose of wood pulp which is 100% biodegradable and compostable) and also recycled fibres. Her Iconic Bridal collection (pictured) which captures the mood of the 1930s is also made from these organic materials, and her Zero Waste philosophy strongly influenced it.

One of the Nepalese-born designer’s bridal creations is preserved in the Fashion Museum, Bath. A London College of Fashion graduate, Sanyukta’s evening wear has been worn by celebrities including Victoria’s Secret supermodel Candice Swanepoel; classically trained soprano Natalie Coyle and English actress and singer Amy Nuttall to name a few. www.sanyuktashrestha.com

GRACE LOVES LACE

Grace Loves Lace has launched its Memoirs Of Her collection for 2023 of eight stunning made-to-order and ready-to-wear gowns priced between £1,200 and £2,500 plus two intricately embroidered veils. It features silhouettes made with a new 100% recycled eco lace, exclusive to the Australian based-brand which is committed to ethical and sustainable manufacturing with all gowns made in Australia. Founder and creative director Megan Ziems tells us, “There’s plenty of skill that goes into making a dress look effortless, each gown in this collection is an ode to craft and creativity - we have challenged ourselves and our in-house artisans to create pieces that will move you. This level of detail, softened by flowing fabrics, texture and effortless silhouettes strikes a unique balance. These gowns are true works of art.”

Always pushing boundaries, the brand has launched the first-ever wedding dress using lycra swimsuit material to hug and shape the body. Megan adds, “We wanted to introduce a completely unpredictable fabric in this collection that makes a statement. The Zsa Zsa dress is hand-crafted from beautiful and highly visual stretch lycra. Think of a dress that makes you feel supported all over, creates the most beautiful curves and accents the body. For the fun and adventurous bride, you can even swim in it at the end of the night.”

The Memoirs Of Her collection will also be the brand’s first dive into the Metaverse, with 10 brides-to-be to receive an exclusive NFT gift with their gown purchase. Megan said it was the perfect opportunity to introduce something new to the bridal market. “We have always been early adopters in the industry, so introducing NFTs as a gift with purchase is our way of starting to immerse ourselves in the Metaverse, where we can already see highly respected fashion brands investing in.” She adds, “We wanted to explore this idea of taking something old and breathing new life into it, which is how the NFT idea came about. I knew this was the collection to pair traditional heritage art forms, like poetry and calligraphy, with modern keepsakes like NFTs.”

VERA WANG BRIDE

Vera Wang Bride, the high fashion, luxury brand that forms part of Pronovias Group which is on track to reach its goal of a 40% sustainability component in all its dresses by 2025, launches its new collection for 2023. From charming, reworked classical silhouettes to edgier fashion-forward statements, these 54 dresses and accessories all have the hallmarks of Vera Wang’s fashion language.

Hi-lo and bustled skirts, clean bandeau tops and deconstructed ball gowns mixed with debutante design details such as belted ties with lace peplums are some of the highlights along with corseted bustiers with see-through panels and cross-your-heart drapes are modest, but also put a deliberate focus on the décolleté.

Style directions in the new collection see experimental silhouettes including modern bridal shapes such as skirt and crop-top two pieces, pantsuits, and sensual dresses. Lustrous fabrics include new Duchesse, mikado, and taffeta fabrics that are softer and silkier than ever and embedded in crystals and pearls. Playful design details such as lace peplums, cross-your-heart bodices, and mini bows create a certain sense of modesty while also highlighting the décolleté with artisan-made accessories playing a prominent role. From detachable peasant sleeves and opera gloves to Elizabethan-style ruffled collars and bibs, these new add-ons allow brides to transform even the most minimal styles. “What I tried to do this time is create accessories that can personalize your wedding dress when and how you want,” clarifies Wang. She adds, “Women right now are reconsidering what bridal means,” referring to the current mood for unorthodox looks and ‘secondary’ bridal dresses for the wedding celebration. “I think we’ve done everything possible to create a wide range of looks with this collection, which I hope will appeal to so many different brides everywhere.”

In line with the Pronovias Group’s inclusivity policy that applies to all the brands in its portfolio, all the Vera Wang Bride 2023 dresses are available in a range of sizes from 32 to 64 (from 0 to 32). www.verawangbride.com

BO & LUCA

Bo & Luca couture gowns are made, hand-beaded and hand-dyed in their Indian-based atelier. Using an ancient Indian technique known as Tambour, each bead is carefully hand-sewn onto the finest silk by local master craftsmen and women over a three to six-month process. The entire journey celebrates the feminine and carefree romanticism which only the delicate hand-beading, embroidery, and hand-dyeing can emulate. Incorporating this age-old technique into each design produces a finer, more intricate, and higher quality result than machine beading, which is a more favoured method in modern garment manufacturing.

Bo & Luca encourages handmade creations and intertwines this value into each gown created under their diffusion brand, Temple. Whilst many Temple gowns are created in their Indian ateliers, the recent partnership with their European atelier has allowed them to diversify their offering into commercially viable gowns which appeal to their bohemian-loving brides with a reduced budget. Temple allows inclusivity and ensures that more brides can make the dream of being a Bo & Luca bride a reality. www.boandluca.com

ANDREA HAWKES

British bridal designer Andrea Hawkes has introduced her Amaryllis 2023 collection named after the flower which stands the tallest of all winter blooms and symbolises pride, strength and determination which has been Andrea’s creative inspiration. She tells us, “I designed Amaryllis as a celebratory collection, each look has a unique element that will allow our brides to truly express who they are. We have seen so much strength and determination in our brides over the last couple of years; it only seemed right to design a collection that will make them feel proud when walking down the aisle. It’s all about confidence and enabling each bride to sparkle and shine bright whilst enjoying their special day surrounded by their loved ones. Amaryllis is a celebration of individuality.”

Cut from the highest quality natural silks, Andrea’s collections are made in London by her in-house team. Featuring 12 dresses and two tops in light to heavy-weight silks, Amaryllis showcases Andrea’s signature clean cut and minimalist aesthetic with a focus on fit and shape to create both natural and sweeping silhouettes for the modern bride. Contoured corsetry and structured box pleat skirts with hidden pockets feature alongside fluid and split-front dresses. Necklines and back details are square, V-shaped or low, designed to be worn bare or layered with sheer chiffon and georgette silks. Sleeves are either statement blouson, off-the-shoulder, classic long or wide or slim spaghetti straps to perfectly offset the skirt shapes.

Sustainability has always been at the heart of Andrea’s brand ethos working exclusively in natural silks including dress linings. All lace is sourced and produced from French mills with ethical working practices. The London studio enables Andrea to work closely with brides across made-to-measure and bespoke designs and a recently launched post-wedding alteration service offers brides the opportunity to re-purpose their dress by the in-house team creating luxury wardrobe staples that can be re-worn for years to come.

BEAUTY NEWS 63

THE hair NECESSITIES

Achieve wedding-ready locks with multi-award-winning celebrity hair stylist and TV hair expert Vicki Lord

Multi-award winner Vicki Lord (www.vickilord.co.uk) is no stranger to the wonderful world of bridal hair; indeed, with more than 30 years of experience, weddings are her passion. The current brand ambassador for Colour Wow, this work has most recently taken her to Australia. She can list among her latest celebrity clients Jack Whitehall, Roxy Horner, Kara Tointon, and Shona Mcgarty.

Vicki took a break from the whirlwind of the session hair world to speak to beauty editor Kelly Andrews about how best to prepare hair for the big day and shares her top bridal trend predictions for 2023.

What’s the best time to seek out a bridal hair stylist and start thinking about the big-day look?

Selecting the right time to see your hair stylist for a consultation and trial is paramount and brides are always eager to book it months or even a year in advance. That said; although it may seem like a good idea, do bear in mind that hair fashions change seasonally throughout the year. Summer may be about braids, whereas winter could usher in a time of slick buns. I suggest and recommend having a trial approximately three to four months prior to your big day allowing your locks plenty of time to grow, while catering for a colour change and fashions. This will also give you enough time to find an alternative hair stylist just in case you’re not comfortable with your first choice.

Why are consultations such an important part of the process? Consultations are key when selecting your desired look for your special day. I’ve experienced many brides coming to me with photos of what they’d like their hair to look like, but sadly overlook important aspects that play a vital role when selecting a style. The shape of the face, the texture of the hair, and most importantly the neckline of that all-important dress are all crucial. For example, if you have a square jawline and want a side bun this will likely exaggerate the width of the face. I work a lot with shapes and silhouettes to make sure the look that’s chosen best complements all of my brides’ features beautifully. A good hair stylist

should be able to help and guide you to choose the perfect wedding hair for your dress.

What’s the most important consideration in the run up to W-day? It’s important to maintain the health of your hair prior to your big day. I’d recommend regular trims and conditioning treatments to keep your luscious locks in tip top condition. After all, shiny, healthy hair looks great on camera!

What bridal hair trends do you expect to see emerging in 2023? Personally, I’d like to see editorial runway hairstyles on brides and will be working on this innovative trend with my soon-to-be-weds as well as teaching these techniques to other bridal hair and make-up artists in my new academy course launching in 2023.

Delving into 2023 fashion trends, I feel inspired by 90s spiky buns as seen on the likes of Kendal Jenner, Gigi Hadid and other social media influencers. Centre partings and wet-look styles with high shine as seen on Chanel, Vivienne Westwood and Balmain runways are also fashionforward looks to keep an eye out for. I also love Giorgio Armani’s simplistic ponytails, bubble braids and pigtails.

Big hair accessories are making an appearance within designers’ collections. Think head scarves, large bows, Frida Kahlo-style flower crowns, and mini and beaded headbands. I’d love to see a bridal take on all of these to complement hair and gowns this year.

The truth ABOUT SUGAR

Find your way to wedding wellness by managing that sweet tooth with help from expert nutritionists

Celebrations such as weddings are typically marked with something sweet – who would say “no” to a slice of cake? While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying sweet treats, excess sugar is inextricably linked with poor health and is the possible cause of issues like inflammatory skin conditions and mood swings. None of which make particularly desirable additions to a wedding day!

The trouble is we can’t do without it! The simplest form of sugar, glucose, is used by every cell in the body to create energy, so it’s a vital molecule helping us to function. According to the NHS, we should be aiming for an intake of no more than 30g of sugar per day. Although, experts say that we unwittingly consume much more due to hidden sugars found in various foods. Such culprits include a myriad of favourites like pasta sauces, dips, ready meals, chilled meats, yoghurts and cereals, as well as carbohydrates including potatoes, pasta, bread and even vegetables like carrots.

Why is this a problem? Over time excess sugar intake can lead to more sinister health concerns such as type 2 diabetes. So, to find out how to look forward to a happy, healthy wedding day and beyond, County Wedding Magazines’ beauty and wellbeing editor, Kelly Andrews, asked expert nutritionists Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness for some advice on managing the sweet tooth in all of us.

READ FOOD LABELS

To find hidden sugars, review the ingredients in your food by using the traffic light labels on packaging, which indicate total sugars. Ingredients are listed in order of quantity, so avoid anything that lists sugar high up or

switch to a sugar-free substitute. Watch out for alternative names for sugar like syrup and anything that ends in “-ose” (sucrose, fructose).

WATCH WHAT YOU DRINK

Whether it’s a syrupy cocktail, a fizzy energy drink, or a glass of orange juice, certain drinks contain a shocking level of sugar that actually causes you to eat more than normal. Opt for water or tonic-based drinks that are not only lower in sugar, but will help keep your teeth healthy too.

CURB THE CRAVINGS

No doubt sugar makes us feel good. It lights up an area of the brain that we associate with being rewarded, which is why sugar cravings can be hard to beat. Planning is key; if you like to snack, choose sugar-free options such as nuts, veg sticks and hummus or plain yoghurt with berries. Ensure your meals include complex carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats to keep you full with more nutrient-dense foods. This is why dessert is served last!

IT’S NOT DOWN TO SIZE

A common mistake many make is to continue eating poorly if they don’t put on weight. Body shape however, isn’t always the truest indicator of health. Genetics and ethnicity play a big part in how we metabolise foods, so be mindful of what you’re eating regardless of your size. Healthy on the inside equals healthy on the outside.

HEALTHY SUGARS

Foods like honey, maple syrup, jaggery, molasses and treacle are often considered healthier due to their additional benefits, such

as vitamin, mineral and antioxidant properties. They are however forms of sugar just like the regular white or brown kinds, so be mindful of any source of the sweet stuff.

FIBRE IS YOUR FRIEND

Fibre is found in all fruits and vegetables and is essential for gut health. The reason whole fruits are usually preferred over the juiced alternative is that fibre dramatically slows down the rate at which sugar hits the bloodstream, making it much more manageable for the body to store, while keeping you satiated. Fruit also comes with essential vitamins and minerals, making it a perfect alternative to processed sugary foods.

A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP

All food, including sugar, should be enjoyed as part of an overall healthy diet. Pay attention to the total amount of sugar you consume and make better choices to avoid hidden sugars. This way, you can consciously enjoy sweet treats when you fancy.

Being restrictive and associating guilt with food only causes confusion and emotional distress leading to further complications impacting long-term health. Knowing what’s in your food will help you make better decisions for better wellbeing.

Q&A Fashion and Beauty

Look your big-day best with top expert advice

BRIDAL BEAUTY

I’m worried about my eye make-up as I will be emotional on our special day. How can I ensure the products don’t budge? It’s great that most products are waterproof, from mascara and eyeliner to lash glue. If you think you’ll cry on your special day, use nude eyeliner in your waterline to cancel out any redness.

Ask your make-up artist to use cream eyeshadow as a base layer before powder products to add longevity to your look. Ensure you set the concealer under your eyes so that tears roll entirely off the face rather than smearing any products.

Why not have a bridal hanky to catch any tears for something new? Always dab right under your lower lashline using an upwards movement and try not to drag the skin down, as that will affect the make-up. Use a setting spray all over the face to lock everything in place to ensure nothing budges throughout the day. The Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray or the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray are both fantastic!

FASHION-FORWARD

I bought a dress with no embellishments, and now I’m worried it’s too plain. How can I add the wow factor?

Pearls are a big trend this year and are perfect for adding elegance to your look, whether that’s through jewellery, a belt or a headpiece. Delicate or structured bows add the wow factor to designs. So, add some to the front, on the shoulders or trailing down the back of the gown. For that ultimate ‘80s vibe, opt for a large statement bow.

Another option is adding lace to almost anywhere on a plain dress. Why not add some to the bust, sleeves, hem, waist or neckline? Or an excellent way to add some class is by incorporating buttons if you have a plain zipper. You can take your pick from pearls, satin or sparkling diamantes! Consider adding sleeves to the gown or wear a wrap/jacket. There are many different materials to pick from, including lace, fur and satin.

Alternatively, embellished belts are the perfect way to add some wow factor with rhinestones, crystals or pearls in varying widths and designs. Why not add some volume or drama with an overskirt, which is also the perfect way to create two looks for the day.

BREATHTAKING BACKDROPS

Why should I book a private showroom and not hold off for a venue’s wedding open day?

Open days are exciting, but the venue will be full of suppliers and other interested couples. The busy atmosphere means you won’t get an accurate sense of how the venue will look and feel on your wedding day. With so many stalls and people on-site, it’s easy to miss some areas and features you would have loved. We will always have our key team members at any wedding open day, but they’ll rarely be able to spend more than a few minutes with each person with so many couples there. A private show round appointment allows you to meet the team you’ll be working with, which is an important step when creating your dream wedding. It’s essential to ensure that the team truly grasp your vision and can accommodate it. They’ll be able to share past experiences while

BRING ON SPRING

What flowers would work best for a spring wedding, and what should we keep in mind?

Spring is the season for softstemmed bulb flowers – think tulips, hellebores, muscari, daffodils and ranunculi. There’s also brief chance to use romantic blossom branches!

Bulb flowers have delicate stems, so avoid tightly binding bouquets to prevent anything from getting crushed.

If you love the eucalyptus look, remember it’s out of season from May to June. So, choose alternative grey or green foliage such as senecio (dusty miller) instead.

helping you understand where everything will go and how it will feel on the day. As the venue is such a central part of your wedding, it’s essential that you feel confident and pleased with the team supporting you on-site.

The staff can discuss how your specific wedding will look with the exact number of guests for your type of ceremony and discuss in detail any catering requirements.

Most couples don’t have plenty of experience planning weddings, so it’s only natural that questions will arise. Unfortunately, bustling wedding open days are not the best environment for this! Your private show round appointment will allow you to work through your questions individually. Walking around the venue and talking through your day may spark some new ones you hadn’t thought of before.

ONCE UPON A TIME

What blooms would you suggest for our fairytale-style wedding in March?

March is a fabulous time to tie the knot! Spring has arrived, so there’s new growth budding everywhere and a promise of sunny days to come.

With a wealth of sweet-scented spring flowers, this has to be my favourite season! The daffodil or narcissus is the perfect bloom with more than 250 varieties to pick from.

A white lily of the valley is another highly scented and delicate flower usually seen in many royal bouquets.

Muscari in blue, white and soft pink shades with many petalled ranunculus all look stunning together. Combine with double, frilled or parrot tulips as well as bold anemones, freesia, cherry blossoms and lush green foliage to create gorgeous bridal bouquet and floral arrangements.

DREAMY WEDDINGS

What will be trending in the world of weddings in 2023, and what advice can you share with us?

The problem with wedding trends is that every nuptial looks the same with similar backdrops, colour schemes, florals and more. The day must represent you both, don’t just play it safe and go with the flow. Take inspiration from any themes while ensuring you stay true to who you are as a couple.

Trends give us a great starting point when looking at what our big day could look like. But I fully encourage couples to be as freethinking as they can be with wedding planning. Don’t get drawn into following trends that don’t fully light up your soul; this day is about your passions and love story. We’re seeing more couples being unique and authentic to their beautiful selves to create their dream day no matter what.

Follow what your heart wants, whether that’s a particular theme or a dream feature. Whatever you decide, remember that the day is for you and no one else – don’t make any compromises.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

I’m looking for the perfect gown for my wedding, what’s currently popular?

As brides love lace sleeves, I’ve added some 3D silk flowers for extra movement and dimension for many clients. I’m also excited to work on more architectural sleeves for adventurous brides this year.

I’m well into opulent jewel-tone dresses for those with an unconventional style and love adding subtle flirtations with coloured beading or embroidery for those after a simple statement.

Impressive back details are essential, as your guests will gaze upon them while you exchange vows and during the first dance with your beloved.

I love layering textures and subtle colours, which draw the eye in. Thoughtfully placed beadwork and lace really elevate the luxe element of gowns.

Sweetie carts and tables bring an element of fun and act as a popular alternative to wedding favours. Plus, the kids (big and small) will thank you for it. Check out: www.debssweetdelights.co.uk

is for KNOWLEDGE

When it comes to picking the right suppliers for your day, it’s important to do your research once you’ve settled on a budget. Search for local companies before viewing the suppliers’ websites and social media pages, where you’ll be able to read reviews from newlyweds. Once you’ve narrowed down your search, contact the companies to arrange a phone call or in person meeting where you can discuss options for your day.

Lis for LATE

The wedding breakfast can end up being served quite late in the day by the time you’ve said “I do,” and popped off for your photographs. So, to prevent your loved ones flagging, ensure there are plenty of delicious canapés on hand for the drinks reception. A selection of five to six is a good guide and we love the idea of mini fish ‘n’ chip cones or warming bitesize pies for the winter.

is for MEMORABLE

MThe team at Blame Frank believe food should be flavourful, fun and freshly cooked with plenty of flare. The chef finds inspiration everywhere he goes, and he’s been around. As a result, the company has combined those global flavours and ingredients with classical cooking to ensure that the food for weddings is exciting while still beautiful and refined.

Check out: www.blamefrank.co.uk

is for NO WASTAGE

Food wastage at weddings is a huge issue, so find out if your venue is signed up to a scheme such as Too Good To Go that connects its app users to businesses that have surplus food, allowing it to be enjoyed rather than wasted. If not, you could consider donating any leftovers to the local food bank.

Ois for ORIGIN

Some venues grow their own food and many caterers will support local farmers by using their meat and produce. Serving locally-sourced food at your wedding not only adds to the ambience, but also supports the community, ensures quality and offers sustainability by reducing the miles it’s had to travel.

Qis for QUICHE

Buffets are still the most popular option for an evening feast. If that conjures up less than appetising images of quiche and sandwiches for you, fear not. The modern buffet is a thing of beauty with options like street food stations, tapas, sausage sarnies and mini sliders.

Whatever food option you go for, make it beautiful! Ceremony arches can be moved and utilised in your reception space – they provide a stylish backdrop for any food, dessert or cake table for example.

Vis for VEGETARIAN and VEGAN

One stress-free way to ensure all dietary needs are catered for is to create an inclusive menu with options to suit everyone. The days of bland and uninspiring vegetarian food are long gone. Alternatively, offer dishes with an interchangeable element should someone need a vegan or dairy-free option, that way you can still have your dream menu with just a few switches. Talk to your caterer about your requirements as they’re sure to have the inspiration and expertise to pull it off.

Tis for TRADITIONAL

Have a think about the ambience you’re trying to create and that’ll steer you towards a dining style. Is an elegant and more traditional seated threecourse dining experience your thing, or do you dream of a relaxed boho-vibe with food trucks or table plan-free grazing?

Yis YORKSHIRE PUDDING

The idea of a wedding carvery fills us with joy! Everyone will be delighted by a roast dinner and you also have that added element of interaction and entertainment as designated guests carve at the table in chef’s hat and pinny.

Calling all animal lovers

We’ve put together the ultimate guide to pets at weddings to help you create the perfect day

Ifyou’re anything like us at County Wedding Magazines, your pets mean the world to you and are an extended part of the family. Many couples choose to include their fur babies in annual celebrations, so why not do the same on your special day? Here are some top tips for creating the perfect wedding alongside your furry friend.

WHAT TO CONSIDER

Having your pet by your side during your wedding might be an exciting thought, but consider how they might react in new environments or larger crowds – you won’t want to stress them out.

If you think involving your fur baby might not be the best idea, fear not as there are plenty of ways to feature your pet on the day. One of our favourite ways is bringing them along to your engagement shoot and using the images on the wedding invites or around your reception space. Why not incorporate an illustration of your pet throughout the stationery, such as on your menus, table names, signage and table plan? You can even have animal-shaped candles or elegant ornaments of animals on the tables – let your imagination run wild and have fun with it!

GROOMER HAS IT

As you’ll be looking back on your wedding images for years to come, it’s essential to ensure everyone looks their best – including your furry friend. So, book your pet into the groomers or take some time before the day to pamper your pet and get them big-day ready. Why not purchase a tux, bow tie, bandana, floral collar, wreath or floral harness to ensure they look ohso smart? Just remember, practice makes perfect! So, get your pet used to wearing any new accessories around the house before the day so they can feel comfortable. Many couples are opting for floral or pearl leads that look stunning and fashionable. If you’re opting for floral accessories, ensure the blooms aren’t toxic to your pet.

If you’re worried pre-wedding nerves will kick on the day, ensure you take some time with your pet that morning to help you relax.

THE PERFECT SETTING

The first and most essential step when planning to have your pet at your wedding is to find a pet-friendly venue. Some venues allow pets throughout the entire site, while others only allow them outside; although this won’t be an issue if you’re having an al fresco celebration it’s best to check the policies they have in place.

Consider the spaces when looking around a property. If you have older pets, keep in mind the flooring as you won’t want them struggling to get around if the floors are slippery. Look for an area where you can create a cosy den where they can relax and escape the crowd if needed. Pack some of their favourite toys and blankets for some added comfort on the day. We suggest taking your pet to the venue before the wedding if possible, so they can familiarise themselves with the surroundings. Remember that your chosen venue might ask for an extra fee or a security deposit to ensure there’s no damage left behind.

78

PET SITTER

Your pet will need a chaperone at the wedding as the day itself will be very busy. So, take some of the weight off your shoulders by hiring a pet sitter or having a loved one on hand to help look after your furry friend. Have a chat with them before the wedding to plan feeding times, exercise and where they need to be throughout the day. They’ll also offer extra support and can jump in when needed. Not only will your pet be in great hands, but they’ll get plenty of care and the attention needed throughout the day.

If you’re on the fence about having your pet attend your wedding, why not have someone bring them along to just the photo shoot away from all the guests? That way, you can take a lovely walk and still see them on your special day – think about the cute images that would be captured!

BON A-PET-TREAT

One of our favourite ways to feature your pet is by incorporating them in the cake topper, so they’ll be the centre of attention and a talking point amongst guests. Many companies can create the pieces using clay or wood, so you can treasure the topper for years to come. Or why not have cute favours such as pet-shaped biscuits or donate to an animal shelter on behalf of your guests? Many organisations can print cards or provide pins as a thank you to share with guests.

If you have leftover cake on the day, why not have doggie bags with an illustration of your pooch for a nice touch? We also love the idea of a treat-to-go station with some tasty treats and custom bags for guests to take home to their animals or share with other pets attending the day. If you’re having a signature cocktail, a fun idea is naming the drink after your companion.

BE PREPARED

Let guests know ahead of the wedding that your pet will be attending the day on your RSVPs or wedding website. That way, anyone with allergies or phobias has time to step forward and arrangements can be made to suit everyone. Loved ones can take extra measures by taking Antihistamines or keeping their distance throughout the day. You’ll also want to inform your photographer so they can prepare and plan some stunning shoots with your best friend – this is particularly important if you have a large pet such as a horse, llama or donkey.

SPECIAL ROLE

Ask any pet owner and they’ll tell you how special their pet really is; they’re with us in our happiest and saddest moments, always ready to share their love. So, why not give them a special role on the day to highlight their importance? Imagine having your companion by your side as you walk down the aisle towards your future husband/wife. Many popular roles included flowergirl, best man, dog-of-honour or ring bearer. Check with your celebrant or registrar to ensure they’re comfortable with this.

For a fun and special touch to your day, why not attach a GoPro to your pet’s harness to capture the day in their eyes? This entertaining idea is the perfect way to look back on your wedding and feel even closer to your best bud – it will also make for some hilarious moments!

HONEYMOON NEWS 83

OF THE BAY On the dock

Crete, the largest island in Greece, is renowned for its stunning golden beaches, wild natural beauty, delicious cuisine and thousands of years of culture and history. Add to that the kind and generous Cretan hospitality, gorgeous weather and chilled vibes and you can guarantee the perfect getaway.

My husband and I jetted off to the Wyndham Grand Crete Mirabello Bay report on the eastern side of the island at the beautiful coastal town of Agios Nikolaos. Our trip was for a few days, but I don’t think a twoweek break would’ve felt like long enough – it was truly amazing. It coincided with a milestone birthday too (my 40th!), so it felt extra special, almost as special as reliving our honeymoon all over again.

HEAVENLY ROOMS

After just a 50-minute transfer from Heraklion Airport, we arrived at our home for the next few days and were excited at what we were greeted by. This beachfront resort features the most amazing sea views overlooking Mirabello Bay, that are framed by picturesque mountains and our room, like many here, overlooked that very view.

We were lucky to experience a stay in one of the Wyndham Collection Sea View Maisonettes in the resort’s Village. If you’re honeymooning here, I highly recommend a stay in a maisonette or bungalow. Each of these feature private infinity pools and sun loungers and many, like ours, looked out to the Mediterranean – perfect! The resort will even arrange for a private floating breakfast upon request to make your first morning here as a married couple even more special.

The rooms in the main building are just as gorgeous, with either sea, garden or bay views, all boast modern interiors and there’s also the option of a wellness room with your very own rooftop jetted pool – the accommodation options are endless.

KICK BACK AND RELAX

As well as our private pool, we enjoyed both of the resort’s pools – one by the beach with those stunning sea views once again, and the adultonly option within the Village (a quiet, calming spot in which to enjoy the sunshine). We also love a beach and dip in the sea and the hotel boasts a sandy beach and a pebble beach within the premises, so we were spoilt for choice. The free-of-charge beach cabanas were also a romantic addition and made the beach trip feel all the more special.

The hotel also benefits from an onsite spa offering an extensive range of massages and treatments, salon services, an indoor pool and a sauna and hammam. For those on their honeymoon, there’s a beachfront couples treatment area (available upon request) so you can lose yourself to the sound of the crashing waves whilst enjoying your massage.

GET ACTIVE

For the more energetic, there’s plenty of activities here to keep you busy. Three tennis courts, a beach volleyball court and an outdoor fitness and bodyweight training area to name a few! The water sports enthusiasts are also in luck – just head down to the beach and choose from scuba diving, snorkelling, jet skiing, water skiing or head out on a banana boat, pedalo

or canoe to take in the views from the water. For a lower-impact activity, some of the rooms in the Village boast yoga and pilates decks over the pools too.

FOOD AND DRINK

The resort features nine on-site restaurants and bars offering aweinspiring views. Our breakfast spot each morning was just perfect looking out to sea through a stone arch of the restaurant’s balcony. Throughout the day, you can grab a cocktail or beer from one of the bars and refuel with your choice of delicious Cretan, Mediterranean, Italian, or barbeque cuisine. You can also order food to your room to make the most of your private balcony.

During our stay we enjoyed some beautiful pasta at Elia A La Carte Restaurant and indulged in the local culture at the Kafenion Cretan Restaurant with traditional rustic cookery and Cretan dancing.

If it’s a chilled drink you’re after as your day comes to a close, check out the Shisha Patio. With its throws, cushions and mind-soothing background tunes, this is the perfect way to unwind after your day in the sun.

EXPLORE

The resort had more than enough to entertain us, but we took a short stroll into the chic cosmopolitan town of Agios Nikolaos. With its shop, bar and restaurant-lined promenade and buzzy atmosphere we loved our time here. Lake Voulismeni is at the heart of this vibrant town, and we just happened to be there during the international cliff diving competition which was a spectacle to see! My big birthday just happened to be on the day of the final, so we decided to eat out that night at the Piano Restaurant overlooking the lake and diving and what a treat it was. The area had such a happy, festival vibe, the food and views were amazing, the locals eating there were the most welcoming and friendly, and just as my birthday cake appeared (made especially by the chef), the cliff diving closing fireworks commenced. It was almost as if my husband planned it all as a romantic surprise (he didn’t by the way but was feeling quite pleased with himself – what good luck hey!).

There’s so much more to do and see but our time here just wasn’t long enough to squeeze more in. What I can say for sure though is that we’ll be back. Crete’s definitely got a special place in our hearts.

BOOK IT

We flew from Leeds Bradford Airport with Jet2 to Heraklion Airport which is just 64km from the hotel.

THE RIVERDown by

Editor Claire Ridley was invited to The Great House in Sonning, part of the Coppa Club collection of hotels and restaurants, that resides on the river

Thissanctuary nestled in a peaceful location on the banks of the River Thames is ideal for honeymooners, and their four-legged friends and children are also welcome for those wanting to book a family-moon. The tranquil, back-to-nature bolthole, a former Elizabethan coaching inn has some famous neighbours – Hollywood movie star George Clooney and wife Amal live in this quaint village tucked away in the Berkshire countryside.

DO NOT DISTURB

There are 49 individually designed rooms and suites with The Coach House Apartment located in the courtyard being the hotel’s best offering for newlyweds which became my home-from-home for the night. It’s a quirky split-level suite with a separate TV room that doubles up as a second bedroom, perfect if it is a family-moon you’re after. A highlight for me was the large roll-top bath – I dived straight in!

A FOODIE HEAVEN

At the heart of this boutique hotel is the swish Coppa Club clubhouse. The brand is well-known for providing the very best elements of a café, bar, restaurant and lounge all combined into one setting with a private members club feel, without the fee. Guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night nibbles with riverside views in the restaurant, bar and snug area decorated with contemporary comforts and vibrant pops of colour.

Those passionate about food will love the extensive menus including the all-day, weekend and non-gluten offerings plus grills, grazing plates and sourdough pizzas - a takeaway menu is also offered. Being practically vegan, I tucked into the mouth-watering Coppa burger made with a delicious plant-based patty and cheese served with skinny fries. Other highlights on the menu were the chalkstream trout and the 10oz rib British steak on the bone. The buckwheat and rye pancakes were the perfect way to start my day the following morning at breakfast.

WHAT’S NEW?

The latest addition are the cosy igloos perched outside the large impressive glass-covered terrace lining the garden leading to the river. The best seat in the house, they provide private dining all year round for up to eight people and there are even blankets provided for the chilly evenings.

MADE FOR ROMANCE

Memories can be made at this idyllic, award-winning wedding venue that’s licensed for up to 100 guests for the ceremony. The Coppa Club chefs have created a collection of wedding breakfast menus and the flexible event space can host up to 200 guests for the evening party. The wedding couple can arrive by boat and will receive a complimentary night in the River Suite, plus a unique code for their guests to book inline.
