Floral wonders

Can you believe it’s summer already? This year is flying by, and it seems like only yesterday that I was writing our Christmas issue! It’s been a wonderful year for weddings so far, and the team at Your South Wales Wedding and I have adored seeing your love stories and can’t wait to see what the rest of the year has in store. We’re here to support you through every aspect of your day and have put together an issue bursting with inspiration. Our fashion section is full of the latest trends for the whole wedding party, we showcase some of the region’s best properties in our venues section, and we’ve asked local photographers to share their best seasonal photographs.

I love bold and bright blooms, so my favourite part of the issue has to be our flowers feature. If you’re starting to look for flowers for your big day but aren’t sure what colour scheme or theme to go for, head over to page 55 to see local florists’ recommendations. If you’ve tied the knot or organised a styled shoot and would like to see it featured, contact me via melissa.cullen@county.wedding or www.yoursouthwales.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding

DELECTABLE DELIGHTS

M Bakery in Newport has added artisan brioche doughnuts to its menu. “After taking a long break from creating cakes, I’ve decided to make a comeback but with an additional treat added to the menu,” says owner Mai Bignell. “All of my brioche doughnuts are filled and decorated beyond the conventional, and for guaranteed freshness, are made to order.” There are currently six flavours to choose from:

• Lemon, Pistachio and Rose Petal Delight is a heavenly combination of tangy lemon curd filling, topped with a velvety ganache montée vanille, finished with hand-crushed pistachios and delicate rose petals.

• The Chocolate Salted Caramel Doughnut is a crowd favourite filled with homemade salted caramel, which harmonises perfectly with a luscious milk chocolate ganache. It’s finished with pieces of delectable dark chocolate shards.

• The Custard Slice is filled with a generous serving of indulgent creme patisserie and topped with a glaze of icing to mimic the iconic dessert.

• The Classic is simple yet divine; this doughnut is coated with a layer of sugar, filled with delectable blueberry jam, and topped with ganache montée vanille and a fresh blueberry.

• Oreo Cheesecake is a treat for the senses; this doughnut is filled with a luscious Oreo cheesecake filling and topped with glazed icing.

A generous dusting of crushed Oreos adds texture, while an Oreo cheesecake rosette and cookie shards complete the look.

• Strawberries and Cream is another bestseller; this doughnut is a celebration of freshness and indulgence. The light and fluffy dough is filled with dreamy, Chantilly cream and hand-cut pieces of fresh strawberries. It’s finished with a rosette of cream and half a strawberry perched on top. SWEET DREAMS

Penhein, a glampsite offering luxury Persian Alachigh tents, is introducing a host of wild gourmet dining options for guests this summer. Penhein Glamping is set in a 450-acre Monmouthshire family-owned farm with wildflower meadows, an adventure playground for kids and a cooling brook to dip your toes in. The accommodation comes in the shape of eight luxury, high-domed tents, each sleeping up to five people.

Available for couples, families and larger groups, the new dining offerings aim to take the self-catering out of glamping. Each experience can be booked on a tailormade basis and can include foraging, firepit feasting and even incorporate an element of tuition on how to cook successfully over a fire for future glamping trips.

The fully immersive new ‘Gourmet Feast and Forage Experience’ with acclaimed forager Chloe Newcomb Hodgetts will see glampers learning about a variety of edibles whilst exploring the woodland, meadows and hedgerows of the farm, followed by a foraged feast. Depending on the month there may be fruits or fungi, foliage or flowers, herbs, vegetables, roots and spices to find, identify, and sustainably harvest with Chloe using the wild ingredients which are unearthed in a delicious meal she cooks up together with a myriad of pre-prepared foraged dishes.

Alternatively, ‘Firepit Fine Dining’ is an incredible experience that sees private chef Roo transporting her mobile kitchen to Penhein to cook up one of her specially curated menus either served in the open air or under a stretch tent.

AT FIRST swipe Love

After matching online, Becca and Lewis quickly became inseparable

Images courtesy of Lucy Parker Photography

Becca and Lewis met in 2016 through a dating app. They discovered that they had a mutual friend in common, and their connection quickly grew. “Lewis’ blue eyes and warm smile stood out to me as well as his ability to make me laugh at anything,” says Becca. “I knew he was going to be my better half from the first time we met.”

Lewis proposed in Dublin in February 2019. “He had taken me away as a surprise birthday present,” shares the bride. “Dublin has always been one of my favourite places, so I didn’t expect the proposal, but it was perfect.”

Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

31 REAL WEDDINGS

We visited The Orangery in August 2020; it was a beautiful day, and as we walked into the ceremony hall, the sun was shining and it was just breathtaking. The ladies at The Orangery were amazing, nothing was too much trouble, and we were put at ease with every visit we had.

Debra and Sophie honestly thought of everything, and from the first time meeting them to the big day, they were by our sides, making sure everything went smoothly.

We gave our guests Welsh cakes in the shape of hearts as favours.

We had beautiful food provided by The Orangery. We chose a three-course meal, canapés and an evening buffet.

Our centrepieces were pumpkin vases filled with corn and pampas grass which lightened the red sashes running along the tables.

To tie in with our autumnal theme, we chose eucalyptus and roses for our flowers. I had a special orange rose in the middle of my bouquet to represent Lewis’ late dad and a bouquet charm for my late dadcu.

Our cake was made up of Lotus, lemon and poppy seed, and chocolate and raspberry.

32

I wore an embodied ivory dress. It was beautiful, and I’ve always wanted sleeves, so as soon as I saw it advertised, I had to try it on. It was from Chapel Bridal in Carmarthen; Lesley was just amazing and quickly put me at ease. I decided to accessorise it with a subtle crystal waistband which elevated my waist.

Lewis chose a navy tweed suit and a beige waistcoat with a burgundy bow tie from Dyfed Menswear in Cross Hands.

We picked the music that played throughout the day, and in the evening, we had a DJ from Joio Entertainment who was amazing. They put so much thought into when to play the right track and how to get everyone up on the dancefloor and were so attentive with the lights and speakers. The bridesmaids opted for burgundy on-the-shoulder cross-over dresses.

Lewis and I also booked a photo booth; we were given a copy of the photos after the wedding, which showed all the fun our guests had dressing up. It was such a lovely touch, and we loved looking at it the day after.

On the morning of the wedding, we were both nervous but excited to marry each other as we are literally two halves. As soon as we were together during the ceremony, it didn’t feel like anyone else was in the room, it was just us in our little bubble.

33 REAL WEDDINGS

We walked through our guests blowing bubbles instead of confetti as Lewis’ dad had bubbles at his funeral. We thought it was a lovely way to remember him on our special day. We took a few minutes out just to be in the moment together and were blown away that everyone came to celebrate with us.

Lucy, our photographer, was absolutely amazing. She took the most creative and natural pictures whilst mixing in the background, and we forgot we were being captured. She’s honestly so lovely, and it was a pleasure to have her photograph our day.

For our honeymoon, we went to the Dominican Republic for 14 days, which was breathtaking. It was everything I’d ever dreamed of, as I’d never been to the Caribbean before. We had so much fun exploring and spending time with each other, just laughing and making memories.

My parents made the planning process extra special and helped make our big day happen.

Our top tip for any couple is to enjoy every minute, have faith that you have planned and prepared everything and make the most of it. You’ll have opinions and questions in the run-up to the wedding, but just remember it won’t matter on the day.

THERE’S BETWEEN US magic

Kerry and Huw incorporated their love of Disney into their big day at Rhosygilwen Images courtesy of Mumford Photography

Kerry and Huw both swiped right on Tinder and found that they were a perfect match. They exchanged numbers and started talking back in 2014. “I was working in a hotel in Aberaeron at the time,” says Kerry. “One Thursday evening, I invited Huw down to the hotel after a shift, and we ended up talking until 2am! We became official in December 2014, and the rest is history.”

Huw popped the question on Christmas Day in 2018. “It was our first Christmas in our new home together,” shares the bride. “We were in our pyjamas in the kitchen, and he’d bought a personalised heat-revealing mug, and on it, he’d written: ‘Will you marry me?’. I was really surprised, and don’t think I finished my tea!”

Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

37 REAL WEDDINGS

Every part of Rhosygilwen was beautiful, and I could imagine how our photos would turn out in my head. The reality was even better, with the large daisy walkway, John’s very well-kept gardens and, of course, the mansion itself. The main attraction was knowing we’d be able to decorate the Oak Hall however we wanted and hire a caterer of our choosing – it was a very personalised experience!

Our favours were Welsh cakes made locally by Truly Scrumptious Bakes. To fit in with our Disney theme, they were in the shape of Mickey Mouse’s head in see-through bags with ‘Be Our Guest’ tags tied with string.

We created our table plan using a mirror; it included the names of the tables decorated with a floral border. All of the text was written in Disney fonts, which was supplied by a small business I found on Etsy called Nicky Noodles Doodles. Although not local, Nicky was excellent to deal with and supplied most of our stationery.

To continue our theme, we had Disney-inspired centrepieces that were designed and made by Truly Madly Deeply. Catherine is a creative friend who kindly supplied us with everything we needed to make our tables look gorgeous.

Our family friend, Elen, made our wedding cake. It included vanilla, chocolate and raspberry sponges with subtle Disney decorations and a Mickey and Minnie personalised topper.

Expressions Florists provided our wedding flowers. Julie was amazing from start to finish, and the blooms were everything I had imagined and more!

38

Steilio Dots Styling supplied our chair decorations which were white covers with grey chiffon hoods and silver broaches.

Steve Briers Disco Roadshow, based in Pembrokeshire, was our DJ for the evening reception. He was fantastic, friendly, and very accommodating. We also had Sarahjane Absalom play the harp for our guests in the chapel and upon arrival at Rhosygilwen. Walking down the aisle to Sarahjane playing Can You Feel the Love Tonight on the harp was like a dream.

My dress was called Lena by Enzoani. I’d seen a couple of dresses online, but being a bit of a tomboy, I was pretty clueless. I couldn’t have been happier with my dress which was actually chosen by the lovely lady in Laura May Bridal in Cardiff. I accessorised it with the largest tiara in the shop, some small, dangly earrings and a simple necklace.

My bridesmaids opted for grey multiway gowns from Infinity Dress. Not only were they affordable, but the girls could wear them however they felt comfortable.

Huw wore a Marc Darcy suit. He chose a tweed check three-piece design in a tan colour. With his groomsmen being dotted all over the world, it was difficult to get them all together, so they wore their own suits, and I liked how it looked in the photos.

Cwtch Catering in Carmarthen provided our food. I honestly can’t thank Marc and Diana enough for everything they did for us. Our guests, 10 months on, still talk about how nice the food was. They were so good with the logistics of having a wedding later on in the day. Everything ran perfectly and not one person had a bad thing to say about their food.

39 REAL WEDDINGS

I was very nervous on the morning of the wedding. I don’t know whether it’s because we’d been together for quite some time and I’d been dreaming about this day for so long. I was taking rescue remedy like it was going out of fashion (it didn’t help). Huw said he was feeling quite chilled until the chapel went silent ready for my entrance.

Our minister said the wrong names a few times during his reading. He must’ve forgotten to amend the names from a previous wedding he did and was reading off his papers without realising. Now we’re known as Stephen and Nerys to a few of our friends!

My dress reveal to my dad was one of my favourite moments. I’d managed to keep the dress hidden from him since 2020, and walking down the stairs to my dad in my wedding dress was such an emotional feeling and every time I watch it back on our video, I cry my eyes out. Don’t get me started on the daddy/ daughter dance set up by my auntie Jacqui!

A special shoutout must go to my brother Kyle. When we were younger, one of our favourite films to watch together was Toy Story. Kyle hired mascot outfits from an online company, and he and my other brother Keelan dressed up as Woody and Buzz –they came running onto the dancefloor dancing to You’ve Got a Friend in Me, and it was honestly one of the best moments ever!

We had to postpone our wedding from 2021, so we had our honeymoon before we got married! Being the petrolhead that I am, we opted to go to the Silverstone Formula One Grand Prix. We were sat on the front row of the grandstand at Copse Corner. Any F1 fans will know that Copse Corner was the place to be in 2021. It was scorching hot weather, so we came back nice and tanned and relaxed.

A veryIMPORTANT DATE

Craig Y Nos Castle was the setting for Adam and Tim’s Mad Hatter’s Tea Party wedding

Images courtesy of Our Beautiful Adventure Photography

42

Tim and Adam met in Oxford in 2011 at an event organised by their university’s LGBTQ Society. “We shared a love of music, film, and video games, and I immediately thought he was kind, handsome and funny,” says Adam. “We hit it off, and shortly afterwards, Tim asked me out for a coffee.”

Adam popped the question on Christmas Day in 2020. “It was our first Christmas together after almost 10 years of being apart on the big day,” shares Adam. “Christmas is Tim’s favourite holiday, so I gave him the ring as his final present, dropping to one knee as he opened it. The inside of the band was engraved with our initials and, in a nod to our love of video games, I placed it in a box resembling a chest from the Legend of Zelda franchise. It had been an incredibly difficult year for Tim, one that made us keenly aware that tomorrow is not a given. We had been discussing marriage for a while, and it felt like the right time to take this exciting next step.”

SETTING THE SCENE

“Tim is Welsh, and we liked the idea of Wales being the focal point of our celebrations,” explains Adam. “Craig Y Nos Castle is a delightful mix of gothic and whimsical and is situated in the beautiful landscape of the Brecon Beacons. Offering on-site accommodation, stunning views, period décor and a gloriously ornate Opera House, we knew immediately that it was a perfect fit for what we had in mind. The staff were incredible, anticipating everything we needed and providing a strong sense of reassurance on the day.”

The couple chose the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party as the theme for their big day. “We used bunting in the conservatory for our wedding breakfast to amplify the theme,” continues Adam. “Our welcome sign was created from a mirror using white paint, custom stencils, and an easel. The orderof-events was designed to resemble a Wonderland signpost and was made from recycled cardboard.”

Instead of wedding favours, Adam and Tim donated to the charity Mermaids and provided details about the charity on the back of their place cards.

“Our centrepieces were thrifted teapots, filled with flowers, atop a fanned stack of books,” recalls Adam. “We used dried moss and MDF discs for the bases and added teacups, flowers, 3D-printed mushrooms, and pocket watches to the book ‘steps’ for interest. My mother took the lead on our flowers, putting everything together over two days in our base of operations in Blaenavon.

“My sister is a wedding cake designer, but owing to the recent arrival of our second nephew, she was unable to be with us on the day,” adds Adam. “To get around this, she created a stunning, three-tiered showpiece with hand-painted details and a ‘floating’ top hat.”

Craig Y Nos Castle provided the catering for the day. “The wedding breakfast was an afternoon tea, and each guest received a three-tiered cake stand with a delicious assortment of sweet and savoury treats,” says Adam. “The evening buffet was popular and included a good variety of hot food and salad options. Some of our fondest memories of weddings involve freshly made pizza, so we also hired Flour’d Up, a mobile pizzeria, to complement the buffet offering. This proved incredibly popular with our guests and allowed us to accommodate multiple dietary requirements.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

“Being non-binary, I wanted an ensemble blending the masculine, the feminine, and the gender-neutral,” shares Adam. “I was looking for something dramatic, empowering, reconfigurable, and comfortable.

I opted for a white grandad collar shirt, a cobalt blue waistcoat, grey trousers cropped at the ankle, two white overskirts (one structured, one tulle), and a pair of black shoes. The waistcoat and overskirts were

designed in collaboration with a dressmaker, while the other pieces were purchased from various retailers. The ability to remove up to three items and still have a complete outfit gave me a lot of scope to ensure I was always comfortable. I ultimately jettisoned the beautiful yet wildly impractical tulle overskirt before the evening function, retaining the shorter, more structured overskirt until the end of the day. Being a milliner, I accessorised with no less than three fascinators (changing after the ceremony and the wedding breakfast), each inspired by a different resident of Wonderland. I completed the look with a buttonhole and a bouquet. Tim wore a cobalt blue suit with a buttonhole in the lapel, a white shirt, a pink tie, and black shoes.”

Adam and Tim asked their wedding party to wear items that made them feel comfortable. “While we did encourage hats/fascinators, we didn’t specify hairstyles, make-up, clothing, or a single, unifying colour,” continues Adam. “For those that wanted a steer, we shared our colour palette for the wedding, but our only requirement was that the outfit made them feel good. The slightly chaotic nature of our theme accommodated this more readily than a traditional concept, but we wanted to give as much control to our loved ones as possible.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

“In line with our theme, we offered a ‘make your own hat’ station, with lots of pre-assembled paper hats and craft supplies for customisation,” explains Adam. “For our younger guests, we offered drawing pads, colouring pens/ pencils, sticker books and bubble wands. We also set up a photo booth using an old digital camera, cardboard accessories, and a Wonderlandinspired backdrop. Our live music was provided by Disco Centric and they performed a slow, soulful rendition of This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) by Natalie Cole for our first dance. They then picked up the pace and invited everyone to join us. The band was incredible and kept the dancefloor filled with two sets of upbeat, familiar songs and a strong stage presence.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

The happy couple felt overcome with joy and gratitude. “After the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, it was so special to spend time with the most important people in our lives,” recalls Adam. “The day went according to plan, and Craig Y Nos Castle’s wedding team took care of everything, letting us focus on our guests.

“Our wedding ceremony was particularly special,” adds Adam. “As nonbinary people don’t yet have legal recognition in the UK and all the scripts use gendered language, we decided to have a bare-bones legal ceremony in the registry office about a month before the wedding. While not ideal, it gave us free rein to customise our wedding ceremony down to the last detail and involve our loved ones in leading the celebrations. The wedding ceremony took place in Craig Y Nos Castle’s Opera House. The script was divided into four sections, each led by a different member of our wedding party, spanning an introduction, the history of our relationship, our vows and the exchange of rings, and a celebration of the support of our friends and family. Everyone was given a rose when they entered, and during the ceremony, they all put their roses in a vase, making up a huge bouquet. It symbolised everyone coming together for love. Lots of people commented that this was their favourite part of the day. We think our guests responded to the ceremony’s focus on our relationship, our love, our marriage and our willingness to be honest about what’s important to us. Having the freedom to use a script that could celebrate our marriage, rather than marriage as an institution, was the silver lining of separating the legal ceremony from our wedding day.”

The couple’s friends and family helped make their wedding extra special. “The willingness of our loved ones to take active roles in organising and leading our celebrations was wonderful,” says Adam. “The members of our wedding party, in particular, were so generous with their time, expertise and support in helping us to create something new. The venue’s wedding

45 REAL WEDDINGS

team were also instrumental to the smooth running of the day, and we are hugely grateful to them.

“As I’m recovering from chronic fatigue syndrome and we were all out of practice at sustained social interaction, we decided to schedule a break between the wedding breakfast and the evening events,” adds Adam. “We were clear with our guests that this was their time to use as they wanted. Some went for a walk around the grounds, others returned to their rooms for a nap, while the remainder took advantage of the quiet to have a proper catch-up with friends and family. This proved to be one of the most popular decisions we made, and several guests commented that waking up from a nap to the sight of freshly made pizza was an experience they’d like to repeat.”

Lauren and Levi chose a burgundy, gold and nude colour scheme for their big day at Crug Glâs Country House & Restaurant

Images courtesy of KEM Radford Photography

Lauren

and Levi met when they were children through family and friends. “As we became teenagers, we were attracted and interested in each other, but as we went to different schools, nothing ever happened,” says Lauren. “Years later, we bumped into each other on a night out. We went on a date not long after and have been together

ever since.”

Levi proposed after Lauren had given birth to their second child. “It was super romantic as it was just us in the room with our perfect newborn,” shares the bride. “It’s a memory I will treasure forever.”

Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

49 REAL WEDDINGS

We had ideas of what we wanted the day to be like, and when we visited Crug Glâs Country House & Restaurant, we fell in love with the venue and its owners. Nothing was too much trouble, and the Cowshed was the perfect space for our big day.

Levi and I opted for a rustic glam theme with burgundy and gold accents. Our flowers included a lot of pampas grass and dried flowers, and the décor team executed the look perfectly. The day was everything I had ever dreamed of and more.

We included photos of us from the ages of one to nine on each of the tables.

Our favours were burgundy macaroons with brushed gold.

Our centrepieces were tea lights and gold stands topped with flowers.

Cake Carousel provided our three-tiered cake, which was decorated with dried flowers and pearls.

My gown was discontinued not long after I bought it, so I felt very lucky to have it. I tried on a load of styles, but this dress was just so perfect and like nothing else I had seen. I accessorised with a cathedral-length veil, a clip in my hair and jewellery.

The

looked amazing in custom-made burgundy dresses from El.Symons.

I was very emotional and excited, which I was surprised by as I thought I would be super calm. We waited four years for our big day due to the pandemic and having to move our date twice, so being with our friends and family celebrating was the best.

Having our photos taken at the Blue Lagoon, surrounded by the spectacular scenery, was one of my favourite moments. I also loved seeing our two boys in their suits.

Max on Sax entertained us throughout the day. He is the most amazing saxophone player and really made our wedding special. bridesmaids Levi chose a black tux with a black dickie bow. The groomsmen wore the same but with burgundy bows.

With a love of the great outdoors and inspired by the beautiful flora and fauna of the Pembrokeshire countryside and beaches, I have a passion for flowers and particularly enjoy working with brides to create designs which compliment their dress, choice of colours and venue.

For something a little different. I can use my creative flair with artificial and dried flowers. Dried and preserved flowers and grasses are equally as beautiful for weddings and can be kept for a long time after the celebrations.

HOT TOPIC Wedding worries

Our experts solve your problems

CHOICES, CHOICES

My partner and I are overwhelmed by wedding planning; how long before the big day do we need to have our suppliers and guest numbers finalised?

It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed by wedding planning. It might be something that you have been thinking about since you were little, and so the pressures and expectations feel high, or you may not have even thought about it before the question was popped, and so it seems like a lot to take in. It’s important to take your time and make decisions that are right for you and your partner.

All venues are different, but we like to finalise guest numbers a month before the wedding here at Venue Wales. Draft a schedule of the day, from supplier arrivals to photograph timings, this will ensure the venue can co-ordinate everything perfectly.

It’s worth allocating a member of the wedding party, such as a bridesmaid or best man as a point of contact between the bride/groom and the venue on the wedding day. The last thing you need is to be bombarded with questions, so let someone else do this for you. The most important thing is communication and remember, no question is too large

WE LOVE TO BOOGIE

My hubby-to-be and I want to hire a DJ for our upcoming wedding, but we’re on a tight budget. Do you have any suggestions on how we can save money?

One of the first things you should ask yourself is, are there any other ways you could save money? I recently had a big birthday and planned a party. We held it in our garden and had bunting from a previous event and banners we were going to use. We were so busy we forgot the bunting and the banner. Did our guests care? I don’t think anyone noticed. However, did everyone have a great time? Yes! We had a singer and a DJ and the music made a big difference. Now I know a wedding is far bigger than a birthday, so my recommendation is to pare back on other expenses where possible, as music will help you make special memories.

A DJ can read the room as well as play your favourite tunes. If you have a venue that doesn’t provide any sound, a DJ will often help you save on the hire of a sound system – a one stop shop, so to speak. A DJ can often provide a master of ceremonies service and help co-ordinate the day. Others will bundle a couple of services together, like lighting for the dancefloor and up lighting.

Remember, music can make the soundtrack to your day and represent you both as well as entertain your guests.

or too small. Relax and let your venue work with you to ensure you have a day to remember.

SEASONAL ROMANCE

We’re trying to decide what time of year to get married but can’t make a decision. What flowers are available each season and are there any ways of saving money?

Firstly, there is never a bad time to get married when you love each other! If you have set your heart on wild meadow flowers, then June through to August would be best, or if you love ranunculus and anemones, then it needs to be spring. Seasonality is so important with flowers and getting the best for your money. If you set your heart on a specific flower, it may be out of season and therefore difficult to source, which will make it more expensive. For example, peonies out of season would cost a florist £3.40 a stem, but in season it would be half that. Flowers are always healthier, stronger, and more beautiful in season, so go with nature. Trust the advice that your florist gives you. Set a colour palette and a style of flowers that you love but be willing to accept alternatives that work with your design. Sometimes specific flowers are just not available, and your florist will know the most cost effective and suitable flower to choose instead.

SHINE LIKE A DIAMOND

I’m looking for sentimental gifts to give my wedding party on the morning of the wedding. Do you have any suggestions?

Firstly, a huge congratulations from all of our team here at Carrie Elspeth! Here are some suggestions for gifts for your wedding party:

Matching sets: Matching jewellery that you can give to your wedding party typically includes coordinating necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. By gifting matching jewellery, you can create a sense of unity and cohesion among your wedding party, symbolising your shared bond and the special role that they play on your wedding day.

Symbolic designs: Look for items that feature symbols such as hearts, knots, or other motifs associated with love, unity, or friendship. These symbolic pieces can serve as a beautiful reminder of the meaningful connection you share with your wedding party.

Sentiments bracelets: Carrie Elspeth offers a range of bracelets that are perfect for conveying heartfelt sentiments. Each bracelet features a meaningful word or phrase, such as ‘love’, ‘friendship’, or ‘gratitude’. Choose a specific mantra that resonates with each member of your wedding party, reflecting your appreciation for their presence on your special day.

Gemstone bracelets: Select bracelets featuring gemstones like amethyst for peace and protection, rose quartz for love and harmony, or angelite for compassion and communication. The chosen gemstone can represent a specific quality or wish you have for your wedding party members, making it a thoughtful and sentimental gift.

Colourful designs: Look for pieces that feature colours that hold significance to your wedding party or that complement your wedding theme.

Hearts for love: Carrie Elspeth offer a range of heartshaped products, including keyrings and jewellery, that make sentimental gifts for your wedding party, symbolising love, and gratitude in a meaningful and elegant way.

CREATURE COMFORTS

What are your top tips for planning an outdoor wedding?

Probably the biggest challenge you’ll face when planning an al fresco wedding is – all together now – the weather! But if you plan, plan, and plan some more, you’ll find ways around it, while still having the best open-air celebration you could wish for.

Make sure everyone’s adequately informed. When you send out your invitations make sure you’re clear which parts of your day will be celebrated outside, so that guests know to make their own arrangements, in terms of attire and protection. Keep an open line of communication with your suppliers too and collaborate with them on wet-weather backup plans. For example, at which point will you be prepared to make the decision to take it all inside? Who is going to be responsible for moving the whole shebang?

Check on the access to your venue. If you’re tying the knot in a field, is there parking nearby? Are there accessible roads and paths to get to you? If not, have a think about how you can overcome these challenges. Perhaps you need to lay on extra transport from a local car park for example. Also, think about accessibility from a point of view about any less able-bodied guests you may have coming.

Sound tends to drift away in the open air, so make sure you have all the tech in place to ensure everyone can hear you as you say, “I do.” You’ll also need to check with the venue whether there are any restrictions on late-night music, as you don’t want to be disturbing the local wildlife or residents! Also on the tech front, do you have all of the creature comforts in place such as loos and generators?

Have a think about what cover you want to provide for you and your guests. This is, of course, crucial for the comfort of all, not only in terms of wet weather protection, but also from the sun – we’ve had some scorchers in recent years. Once you’ve settled on a vibe for your nuptials, this should all become clear. An elegant, lined marquee is ideal for a classic wedding, whereas a tipi is the perfect choice for a boho or rustic vibe.

When it comes to styling, really take a look at your setting and plan ways in which you can complement it with your theme. Nature can do an incredible amount of heavy lifting on this front if you strive to work with it, rather than against it.

It can be overwhelming deciding when to get married, and the choice of flowers seems almost limitless, but by deciding to go with flowers that are in season, you are guaranteed your florals will be in their prime.

The idea for this styled shoot was to promote small, local businesses. Stacey Williams from Bridal Braids tells us: “My inspiration came from both my colleague and I recently becoming engaged. After working as a wedding hair specialist for more than 10 years, getting engaged really inspired me to promote the wedding industry that much more. I love everything about weddings, and getting to create this photo shoot was a great experience and lots of fun.”

Seasonal ROMANCE

Local photographers show how you can capture stunning images throughout the year

The weather can often be a deciding factor on what time of year you get married. It’s great to plan, but as we all know the weather in Wales can be unpredictable, meaning you can still get rain in the summer and sunshine in the autumn, so it’s important not to dwell too much on the what ifs and instead prepare for all climates. To help you decide when to tie the knot, we’ve asked local photographers to share some of their favourite seasonal images…

Winter

“Never be afraid of the rain. In the last 10 years, I have been doing this, I’ve become a sort of weather expert and, most of the time, I manage to miss the rain. When your photographer says it’s time, get ready to go!” –Katie Radford from KEM Radford Photography.

“For winter weddings, make sure you plan your day around the light, if the sunset is at 4pm, have an earlier ceremony so you get the most out of your couple photos, group shots and special moments.” –Laura Rees from Laura Mae Rees Photography.

www.mumfordphotography.com

“My advice for anyone worrying about the weather is to embrace what you have, choose a photographer you trust, and go with whatever they say. Try to be flexible on times so that you can go out and get the best light possible in the finest weather possible.” – Sarah Mackay from Mumford Photography.

“In spring, you get the most dramatic sunsets and skies, so always say yes to sunset/golden hour photos! If your photographer wants the shot, you will too!” – Katie from KEM Radford Photography.

“Spring is an amazing time in Wales for flowers, both natural and agricultural. Speak to your photographer about incorporating some of these gorgeous blooms into your wedding photos.” – Rosie Prosser from Mam.ento Photography.

“My tip for shooting in summer is to put the couple in front of the sun, don’t be afraid to shoot into the sunlight and never let the sun be behind you as you don’t want to be squinting in the photos! A trick is to use your hand as a guide, put it up in the light and do a circle, see how the shadows play and what’s best!” – Laura from Laura Mae Rees Photography.

“If you’re fortunate enough to have good weather on your day, it’s super important to seek out shaded areas at your venue. The harsh summer sun is very tricky to photograph in, as it creates unflattering shadows on the face. Seeking shade will help stop you and your guests from overheating and having photos with squinty eyes, shadows under your eyes and sweat patches.” – Rosie from Mam.ento Photography.

“Make sure you enjoy the experience, this is your moment to be close to your partner and show how much love you have for each other. Cwtch up, love the experience, and remember you’ll look back on these photos for years to come, not only to see how gorgeous you looked and how in love you were on the day, but to remember what an amazing day you had come rain or shine.” – Sarah from Mumford Photography.

“My favourite thing about autumn is the gorgeous low light that you tend to get throughout the day. Autumn weddings are spoilt with golden hour all day long, this gives you a great opportunity for dreamy couple photos earlier in the day, leaving you free from photo duties later in the evening.” – Rosie from Mam.ento Photography.

“Autumn weddings can be tough, so I normally have a walk through the venue and choose photo spots in case of heavy rain, but if it’s just a little bit of drizzle, we’re going outside!” – Katie from KEM Radford Photography.

Being Sophie

Sophie Stonehouse on body positivity, self-love and flawless skin

Social media sensation Sophie Stonehouse, is perhaps best known for her appearance on the fourth series of Netflix’s reality dating show, Too Hot To Handle. Hailing from Brighton, she was the only British cast member and made her mark as the group of risqué singletons were put to the test of abstinence in order to keep their prize money high and stay in with a chance of winning it. Since leaving the villa, she has dedicated her time to producing fashion and style content for her social media followers, now numbering in their hundreds of thousands. Lesser known however are her struggles with body dysmorphia and her fight to achieve body positivity. Being the centre of attention on their wedding day, isn’t every couple’s dream with issues such as Sophie’s becoming more prevalent, and importantly more commonly discussed. So, CWM’s beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, caught up with Sophie to find out how she overcame these personal challenges, as well as discovering her top health and wellbeing tips.

What will you take away from your time on Too Hot To Handle?

The experience really taught me about self-love and respect. It also taught me that the most incredible experiences in life, happen when you least expect it. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to go on the show.

What have you been up to since you left the show?

I’ve completely transformed my career to become a full-time content creator. It’s a job I’ve always wanted to do. It’s definitely not an easy one, but it’s very fulfilling. I’ve also found a new relationship since leaving the show, and I’m very happy.

You seem very at home in your own body. How did you find this confidence?

Body confidence is something I’ve definitely struggled with, and I’m definitely a victim of body dysmorphia. But, I found the confidence to be at home in my own body, when I realised that I was never truly going to be happy with it. I noticed that I was always finding something to complain about whether I was overweight or underweight. Once I learned to accept myself, only then did I truly feel at home.

Are you able to tell us a bit about your battle with body dysmorphia and coming out the other side?

I’ve suffered badly with it over the past couple years. Since being

a young adult, my weight has fluctuated year after year, and when I turned 18, I put on quite a bit. Then, as the first Covid lockdown hit I fell in love with fitness and completely transformed my life and body. However, that did come with its own disadvantages. I became obsessed with it all and would really get down on myself when I didn’t work out or eat right. Ultimately though, it taught me that no matter where I am with my body, I’m always going to want to change something whether I’m in perfect shape or not. I feel that now I have a happy balance and have accepted myself the way I am. I know that I want to look good, but I also want to enjoy my fried chicken burger, fries and a gallon of mayo without feeling bad!

How do you want to encourage and inspire women to discover their own self-love?

I think it’s important to remember that no one really cares. That’s what I learnt after suffering with pretty bad acne. I thought everyone was looking at me and the reality was that they just weren’t. As soon as you start putting yourself outside of your comfort zone, your confidence will grow. Another big one: don’t be mean to yourself, give yourself a break.

Wedding dress shopping can be a stressful time for those with worries about certain aspects of their body. What should they be looking for to feel more confident on the big day?

I think it’s so important to leave any expectations at the door. Go into the shopping experience with an open mind and a clean canvas. I’d be looking for something I feel comfortable and myself in. I think it’s important to remember that most people aren’t completely happy with themselves, and that’s okay. Go with what feels right and remember: on the day you really won’t care about the little things.

For many, their wedding day is the first time a couple will find themselves the centre of attention with all eyes on them. Some may find this uncomfortable, particularly if they’re feeling self conscious about their body. What advice would you have for them?

As long as you’ve made the day enjoyable for yourself as well as your guests, you’ll get lost in the experience. I think a lot of couples get caught up in making the experience great for their guests, but forget about their own wants and needs. I think it’s important to have fun with the

whole thing, don’t do anything or wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or not yourself. This is your day to shine. If you don’t like wearing a high heel and it isn’t for you, then don’t! Make the day perfect for you and throw on those trainers.

What does a typical day look like for you?

My typical day at the moment starts with a dog walk and a coffee. I live next to a canal, so I walk my dog there every morning. I then get back and make myself some breakfast and start my working day. After work I’ll try to walk him again before heading home to make dinner and relax. At this point in my life, it’s all about career and I’m happy with that.

Your skin is flawless! Tell us about your daily skincare routine. Surprisingly I don’t do a lot! I have very sensitive skin, so I like to keep it minimal. My go-to everyday skincare routine consists of my Garnier Micellar Water on a cotton pad, which I use to clean my face and remove all make-up. I follow that with Simple’s Replenishing Rich Moisturiser and Eye Cream. It’s really just that simple… less is more!

Are there any products you’d recommend to a nearlywed looking to get their skin in top condition for the big day?

I’d highly recommend GlamGlow’s face masks. They’re incredible and will help to get your skin looking perfect for the big day. For those suffering with acne, my top tip is: stop touching your face! I’m a picker and once I stopped it went away, very quickly.

What make-up products can’t you live without?

Cream contours and eyebrow gel!

What’s next for Sophie Stonehouse?

At the moment I’m working towards growing my platform. We have some exciting things in the pipeline for this year so you’ll just have to wait and see!

Q&A Beauty

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

LIFT OFF

My long hair is generally quite flat and lifeless, but I love the idea of wearing my hair down on my wedding day. What can I do to give it more volume?

One of the easiest ways is to get some layers put in it. If you’ve got collarbone-length locks or longer, then longish layers are best with the shortest being chin or jaw length. This way, you take weight out of the hair but keep the length while creating body.

Having a fringe put in is also a great way of achieving more volume. Because a fringe is made up of hair taken from the top of the head, you’re removing weight there and pushing it to the front.

Blow-drying your hair properly is a good idea too. So, dry using a small, round brush dry from roots upwards. People think a big brush is the best way to create body, but actually a smaller size is better as you can get right in at the root lifting from the scalp. Blow-drying hair with your head upside down is also a good trick. Remember, you’re trying to defy gravity, getting the hair away from the head. The MDLondon Blow with a large nozzle and a really good bristle brush will give you a fantastic blow-dry with flyaway- and frizz-free shine and lots of volume!

You’ll want to look for resin-based blow-dry products containing PDP VA core polymers such as mousse, blow-dry sprays, and hair protection sprays. These can go hard or a bit crispy but as long as you’re constantly moving the brush while you’re drying you’ll avoid the worst of this. But bear in mind that you do need some of that crunchiness as it’s this texture that supports the volume. I love a product called Sugarlift by Wella EIMI.

Dry shampoos and texturising sprays are good at supporting volume too. I use Umberto Giannini Texture Boost on myself and on my clients. You can use it throughout the day, so if you feel your hair getting a bit flat, just flip your head forward and spray it in at the roots whenever you need to. Above all, you don’t want anything oily on the hair – no oils, no serums, nothing greasy as they’re heavy.

Another good method for creating body is adding waves. If you put a curling tong through sections of your hair it creates push against other sections and that in turn creates volume. But if you don’t put enough wave in at the roots the hair sits a bit flat, so make sure you concentrate the tongs at the root, which is where you want the lift.

On the big day, put medium velcro rollers in your hair and leave them while you have your make-up done. Try a bit of backcombing at the roots too, teasing the hair with a wide-toothed comb.

You could do one of these things or all of them and it will help you. I guess what you don’t want is unrealistic volume so that it looks like a parody. You want to find a happy medium where the hair is healthy looking, so I’d recommend experimenting before the wedding until you find that sweet spot.

What hair and make-up styles would you suggest for a summer wedding?

There are lots of styling options for summer weddings, but one thing to remember is that it’s likely to be warm and if your hair is around the back of your neck, it will make you feel even hotter. Depending on the style of your dress, I would recommend wearing your hair up. This will help keep you cool, and you will be less likely to touch your hair, meaning it will hold well throughout the day and into the night.

If you’re planning on wearing it down, go for a half-up style so your locks don’t feel as heavy. Consider loose tousled waves and more relaxed curls adorned with fresh or dried flowers.

Keep in mind, large barrel curls and Hollywood waves are harder to maintain throughout the summer months and are likely to drop down faster than in the cooler season.

When thinking about your make-up, remember that your skin is likely to be oilier in the summer months. A lighter application and a matte finish, I find, works well.

A warm, bronzed and golden style looks beautiful in the sun giving you a radiant and sun-kissed glow.

Groomed Mobile Barbers have seen a rise in bookings for home haircuts and beard trims for weddings. Able to set up anywhere, Groomed Mobile Barbers bring with them everything needed to ensure your hair is styled, beard is trimmed and shave is perfectly smooth.

Owner Giuliano Dore tells us: “In many cultures, the bride gathers with her bridesmaids to have her make-up and hair done just before the wedding, but in the past, men simply queued at their local barber shop waiting for their turn. Now, everyone wants to have memorable photos, look their best and make more of the morning preparations. I advise grooms-to-be to consult with a barber about the style that they want before the wedding. A dramatic change may not be the most sensible thing to do just before you say your vows. Have a restyle a month or two before so that your wedding cut is just a tidy up and there are no shocks on the day.”

Dressed TO IMPRESS

The team at Colour Me Beautiful share their fashion advice for the groom-to-be

Choosing the right outfit for your special day will come down to a variety of factors: the style of wedding you’re having, the venue, the time of year and, of course, what your partner is wearing. To help you find the perfect look, we’ve asked Cliff Bashforth, the MD of Colour Me Beautiful, to share his top styling tips:

CHOOSING A STYLE

There are different styles of formal attire available for men, some of which are more traditional than others.

Morning dress: This is the most formal suit worn during the day and works well for all body shapes and sizes.

Tuxedo: A formal look typically used for evening receptions, tuxedos can be either single or double-breasted, and for a less formal look you have the option of adding a coloured tie and waistcoat or cummerbund.

Frock coat: A popular addition to the wedding scene, the frock coat can be made from luxury fabrics such as brocade or velvet. It’s best suited for average to tall, inverted triangle and rectangle body shapes, but can be worn with a waistcoat.

Lounge suit: This is a relaxed formal wear and is suitable for any time of day. If you aren’t used to wearing a suit during the day, this might be the most comfortable option. Choose fabrics carefully: a crisper fabric for an inverted triangle, lightweight for a rectangle and a softer, woven fabric such as lightweight flannel for a round body shape.

Alternatives: If a uniform is part of your life, you may want to wear a formal version of it for your wedding. The same applies if you have traditional dress, religious or otherwise. For an informal wedding, you may want to wear a lounge suit, with or without a tie.

HIRING

Don’t hesitate to hire the men’s attire, but make sure that you have tried your suit on in advance

and that the sleeve lengths are correct, and the trousers fit properly.

Whether you want the best man, fathers, and ushers to wear the same as the groom is entirely a personal choice. However, the best man usually wears the same style of suit as the groom. What the other men in the bridal party wear often depends on the formality of the wedding. If you choose to have a page boy or ring bearer, make sure that he’s comfortable in what he wears to avoid any last-minute tantrums.

ACCESSORIES

The way the men in the bridal party wear the various accessories that complete their outfit is important, and you will want to make sure they get it right. This is where you can co-ordinate or contrast colours and demonstrate some of your personality.

Shirts, ties, and cufflinks: The choice of shirt will depend on the neckwear. For example, a tie requires a standard shirt and collar, a self-tie cravat can be worn with a standard or wing collar, a cravat needs a wing collar to go with it and if you’ve decided to go for a bow tie, team it with a standard or wing collar. Whatever the type of neckwear, it should be made from silk so it falls well.

Cufflinks are only worn with a shirt that has double fold back cuffs. Beware of choosing jokey inappropriate cufflinks for a formal wedding.

Waistcoats: You can choose a waistcoat in the same colour as your jacket or a contrasting one. Consider wearing something different from the rest of the men to help you stand out and make your own fashion statement. As with any waistcoat, always leave the lowest button open.

Cummerbunds, belts and braces: A cummerbund can be worn with a black tie or tuxedo and is great for tidying up the waistline and disguising a rounded stomach.

A cummerbund should always be teamed with a bow tie, and you can have fun choosing suitable colours for both.

If the suit trousers have loops, these call for a belt (and certainly no braces), but if these are unable to be altered to fit for the occasion and there are no belt loops, braces will be needed. Under no circumstances should these be worn together!

Shoes and socks: Black shoes should be highly polished and not scuffed; black patent can be worn with black tie. Make sure any labels on the soles are removed before wearing them.

Socks should be worn in plain, dark colours and made from wool, cotton, or silk. Avoid man-made fibres to prevent discomfort. They should be long enough to cover your lower calf.

Boutonnière or buttonholes: A boutonnière is a small flower arrangement placed in the buttonhole. Your boutonnière should match the flowers or colours used throughout the rest of the wedding.

Boutonnières for the rest of the men in the wedding party should be the same style or colour as yours, but not exactly the same in other respects. Double check that the stem of the boutonnière is securely pinned to the lapel.

GROOMING

Make sure you’ve booked a haircut for the photographs. If you have heavy brows, they should be controlled – you may need to get your tweezers out! It goes without saying that shaving or beard trimming must be attended to at the appropriate time prior to the ceremony. Your hands will also be on display on the day, so treat yourself to a manicure the day before the wedding or do it yourself if you have the time.

HONEYMOON NEWS 91

MY EVERYTHINGMy first, my last,

Located in the South Ari Atoll, renowned for its marine life and coral gardens, the resort is spread over two islands: one, the blissfully peaceful adult only island; the other slightly more buzzy, welcoming families; both stunningly beautiful and connected via a 500m wooden bridge – the first of its kind in the Maldives! Getting there couldn’t be easier with BA flying direct from London Heathrow! Once you land in Malé, you can rest in the Conrad Lounge to cool off with a refreshing juice, bite to eat and even a shower if you so wish before you embark on your seaplane for a 30-minute breathtaking flight to your home for the duration of your honeymoon. And home it is. The resort’s friendliness is not to be taken for granted, expect warm smiles, relaxed vibes and no stuffiness often associated with such glamorous resorts.

AN ISLAND OF FIRSTS!

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island boasts the nation’s first underground wine cellar, first below sea level bedroom in The Muraka (with the first underwater elevator in the Maldives!), first dedicated cheese bar and the first to open an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Maldives, Ufaa – to name a few of its innovations. It’s only right to be the first destination to experience as a married couple. Goosebumps, right?

A ROOM WITH A VIEW

I was fortunate to stay in one of the sunset water villas complete with a private plunge infinity pool allowing you to watch the sky turn from the brightest blue to blazon orange with a glass of bubbles in hand. Utter indulgence. If staying over the water is not your thing, the opposing side of the island offers fabulously chic beach villas with private pool just steps away from the turquoise waters that you’ve only ever seen on postcards.

UNDERWATER LIFE

Maldives offers worldclass snorkelling and diving opportunities. On the Rangali Island’s house reef, I was lucky enough to spot a manta ray, baby black fin sharks, who have kept to the shallows to learn to feed and grow, parrot fish, turtles, reef sharks and shoals of colourful fish imitating a scene

from Finding Nemo! If this isn’t enough, the resort offers an excellent range of water sports and boasts a PADI 5* dive centre. I was lucky enough to enjoy a champagne sunset cruise where we viewed joyful spinner dolphins playing gleefully in the waves; as well as our search for the magnificent whale shark which, like us, enjoys bathing in these warm, tropical waters.

indulged in a 90-minute session entitled Mindful Bliss. Watching the fish beneath through the glass-bottomed treatment room, my therapist began the ritual to restore harmony and balance. She started with the most fabulous back massage, followed by a mini facial using clear quartz crystal wands and finished with the entrancing effect of fragrant coconut oil being gently poured on my forehead and hairline (often known as your Third-Eye Chakra). My hair has never felt so nourished following this invigorating hair and scalp massage.

A FOODIES’ PARADISE

Foodies are in for a treat with 12 restaurants to sample. Wake up to room service or enjoy breakfast at Vilu, the à la carte establishment offering dishes from smashed avocado with sourdough to eggs benedict to sensational pancakes for those with a sweet tooth, or head over to the very relaxed Atoll Market, the resort’s only buffet restaurant. Here you can sample many international cuisines, everything from sushi to freshlymade omelettes and help yourself to a smoothie pressed-to-order or a fruit platter from the cold room.

Another first, dine below deck at fine-dining restaurant, Ithaa. Here, I was lucky enough to enjoy a set menu which consisted of silky dill-infused salmon, foie gras torchon, and miso and truffle marinated black cod fillet, all beautifully paired with a sensational Sauvignon Blanc – all this whilst watching reef sharks gliding past the surrounding glass walls. As well as these choices, there’s Ufaa by Jereme Leung, where you can sample handmade noodles and dim sum; and the island’s health restaurant, Mandhoo – expect freshly caught seafood, lobster and fragrant flavours aplenty.

FEEL-GOOD TRAVEL

Eco-conscious travel is all the rage and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is certainly getting involved in the promise to go green. You’d be hard pushed to find a single-use plastic in the resort as bamboo options (even your key card) are being introduced at every opportunity. Furthermore, and I was so excited to be a part of this, in 2017 the resort launched a coral regeneration programme, which aims to protect the surrounding reefs. With a complex eco-system and more than 10,000 species in the Maldives, the programme includes a coral nursery and a coral adoption programme for guests to partake in. The super-friendly dive team and I took to the waters to replant baby coral to flourish in their new home and hopefully thrive and grow. In six months’ time they’ll update me on my coral’s progress! Watch this space...

TRUE ROMANCE

It’s safe to say the staff at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island will do everything to make your stay one to remember whether you’d like to experience private dining beneath the stars on your veranda listening to the sea lap around your stilted accommodation; or a private beach dinner, just you, your love and the powder white sand beneath your feet. For total relaxation, a visit to one of the island’s two spas is a must. I

ONCE IN A LIFETIME

Bond. The name’s Bond. No this isn’t a new film location of an upcoming James Bond movie, it’s The Muraka - a first-of-its-kind, luxury two-level residence with a master bedroom submerged some 16ft below sea level in the Indian Ocean. If money’s no problem, then honeymoon like Paris Hilton and go for it!

There’s so much more to say, but I’ll leave you to find out the rest for yourselves. Do indulge, it’s worth it. To book, visit the website: www.conradmaldives.com

HONEYMOON REVIEW 93

HAVEN A Celtic

Peace and tranquillity awaits honeymooners at Galgorm in Northern Ireland

WhileNorthern Ireland might not be the first place you think of when planning a mini-moon, having spent two nights at the incredible Galgorm Resort near Ballymena, CWM deputy managing editor Kelly Andrews is here to change that!

Northern Ireland’s premier luxury hotel and spa, located just 30 minutes from Belfast, offers the ultimate haven of relaxation. Set within 380 acres of parkland with the sometimes rushing, sometimes babbling River Maine running through it, Galgorm’s enviable location truly provides an escape from the real world.

A SPOT OF R&R

The jewel in Galgorm’s crown is the Thermal Spa Village, which I’d go so far as to say is unique, as I can honestly say I’ve never encountered its like. So vast is it that you need a map to orientate yourself! It’s fortunate indeed then that it has it’s own app containing just that, plus all the info you could possibly need during your stay. My accommodation was a mere two-minute walk to the entrance, so I was up bright and early, donned the robe and flip flops provided, and was off to investigate. Despite the flight from Stansted the previous day being one of the most stressful in recent memory, I could already feel the tension melt away as I strolled alongside the River nodding a cheerful, “good morning,” to fellow guests as I went.

If your experience of a spa is a pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and a sauna, maybe a hot tub if you’re really lucky, you’ll be swept off your feet by the Thermal Village! Mainly based in the open air it features a Wonderland of treats to explore and experience around every corner. I happened upon the Riverside Garden first; home to outdoor pools, hot tubs, The Salt Cave, a cafe and the Celtic Sauna. In some of the Resort’s packages you’ll receive a complementary 10-minute Celtic Sauna Infusion here, which was the case with my shepherd’s hut accommodation. So naturally, I wasted no time!

We were shown into the sauna by our sauna master, where I was pleasantly surprised to find a floor-to-ceiling window along one side acting as a frame for the stunning, tranquil landscape beyond. It occurred to me that what this place does so well is allow nature to do its thing in providing all the beauty and relaxation anyone could wish for. The landscape is part of the experience, not just a mere sideline, but I digress...

This treatment is a traditional Aufghuss ceremony consisting of three balls of ice being thrown onto hot coals, each one containing essential oils to benefit the body in a different way (breathing, circulation and skin) with each temperature more intense than the last. The air was circulated by the sauna master who used a towel to push the aromas towards us in the mesmerising, dance-like movements characteristic of the ceremony. As Celtic music played softly in the background, it was easy to drift away. When the ritual was over, we were escorted to the firepit area, where we were served a cool and refreshing watermelon punch to bring the body temperature back down.

As I continued my explorations, I came across The Walled Garden and couldn’t resist stopping for a cocktail in The Palm House, where I was able to recline and take in the views of the beautifully manicured gardens. Soon though, it was time for my private Riverside Bathing Experience. From reception, charming host Kenneth showed me the way to Birch, my very own secluded hot tub for the hour. The water is heated by log burner to 39 degrees, and the comforting smell of the wood burning only adds to the experience. A glass of prosecco waited for me and I was able to order more drinks using the QR code provided, which would be served tubside. All of my senses were engaged as I listened to the calming music and the sounds of the flowing river, sipped on my prosecco, enjoyed the smell of the wood smoke, and felt the warm water relax my muscles – this was the life!

The Thermal Village is actually open until 9pm, but by 6pm it was

time for me to reluctantly head back to the hut to get ready for dinner. I procrastinated all the way though, stopping en route for one last visit to my beloved River House (with its infared beds and views of the cascading River), a hot chocolate enjoyed on the riverside boardwalk, and a spell in The Alpine Garden’s vitality pool.

HEARTY FARE

The foodies amongst you will be equally as delighted by Galgorm as the spa aficionados since there are no fewer than three restaurants to choose from for dinner: Fratelli Ristorante, Gillies Grill and Castle Kitchen + Bar (the latter just a short transfer away). That’s not even counting the other options for afternoon tea in The Conservatory, where you can also find the Cocktail Bar & Gin Library, and McKendry’s, all up at the main house.

This was my first visit to Northern Ireland and I found the people to be some of the friendliest I’ve ever encountered while travelling. We honestly felt like we were among friends, and the staff at Galgorm can’t do enough for their guests. We didn’t have to make the walk from our shepherd’s hut to Gillies Grill once as we simply dialled reception and a short while later a thoroughly charming member of staff would be there to collect us, which was most appreciated, particularly when it rained.

Gillies Grill is reportedly a favourite amongst guests and locals alike, and it’s not difficult to see why. With a warm informal atmosphere, and hunting lodge vibes, it offers a menu sure to delight any palate. Interestingly, the menus for all of the eateries at the Resort are accessed via QR code, so you can peruse at leisure on your phone. No doubt developed during the pandemic, it helps to keep everyone safe, but is also kind to the environment cutting down on paper.

I opted for the barbecue pork bites, followed by the braised brisket of beef for main, finished off with a selection of delicious Irish cheeses. After thanking our super-sweet and helpful server, we made our way through to the adjoining McKendry’s. With a traditional Irish pub vibe, it’s also the Resort’s exclusive whiskey bar, offering an impressive collection of 300plus varieties from more than 21 countries. Here, we happily let our dinner go down while sipping on another cocktail and listening to the live music.

When it comes to culinary highlights, for me, it was breakfast. I’ll admit to being like a kid in a sweetshop! The spread was a joyous sight to behold with everything you could possibly dream of for the most important meal of the day from muffins and pastries; fish, cold meats and cheeses; cereals and fruit; to pancakes, full Irish breakfast, waffles and toast. Self control was most definitely needed!

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Opened as a bed and breakfast more than 30 years ago, Galgorm has grown into the immense site it is today with 125 luxurious guestrooms, including 48 deluxe rooms, Junior and Signature suites, along with a range of more out-of-the-ordinary accommodation such as log cabins, cottage suites, shepherd’s huts and exclusive residences perfect for groups. But it hasn’t stopped there as it’s still growing with works currently underway and more in the pipeline. Even as I visited, work on a group of two storey cottages was nearing completion and land was about to be cleared for the new treehouse accommodation.

I was happily ensconced in one of the Resort’s shepherd’s huts during my stay. Welcomed by an electric woodburner cosily heating this home away from home, we quickly discovered all the comforts we could wish for were provided. I was obsessed with the huge outdoor copper bath, which I made a dive for as soon as I’d dumped my bags. The complimentary G&T and bath bomb, were much appreciated additions following the aforementioned airport hell.

For honeymooners though, there are two particular showstoppers that I would highly recommend! If you’re looking for ultimate luxury, Suite 1857 can be found in the original manor house and offers unrivalled views of the River from its Juliet balcony. Elegant and romantic, its rooms are decorated in brocade wall coverings in a muted palette, antique lighting, and French Baroque-style furniture, with solid oak floors and beams. It features a lounge area with sofa and two arm chairs for curling up in front of the TV, plus bathroom with free-standing bath and walk-in shower.

If a secluded, rustic, woodland escape is more your vibe the Shepherd’s Hut Suite is the place for you. Nestled in Galgorm Wood with the cascading River running alongside it, it’s luxuriously appointed with a lounge, mini kitchen, and bathroom with shower room and free-standing bath. But the stand-out features, without doubt, are your very own sauna and hot tub on the terrace. Enjoy a soak in the warm waters as you watch the sun set and raise a glass to yourselves, the newlyweds.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 95

Do not disturb

Olivia Gibson ventures to Staffordshire for a spa minimoon at Moddershall Oaks

Nestled in 72 acres of tranquil parkland in the Staffordshire countryside, Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat is a luxurious property with lavish suites, spa facilities, lakeside dining and a wellness centre. The retreat offers a private location surrounded by unspoilt views of the rolling countryside, setting the perfect scene for romantic minimoons and getaways.

I felt a calming oasis as soon as I ventured onto Moddershall Oaks’ winding driveway. With the sun beaming down on me, I quickly left the outside world behind. The next thing I knew, I was enjoying an elderflower spritz while chatting to the attentive and friendly staff who were on hand throughout my entire stay.

REST YOUR HEAD

With only 10 suites on-site, I was excited to see my accommodation, and I wasn’t disappointed when I entered the modern space. Complete with air-conditioning, a seating area with plush furnishings, a private terrace, a smart TV, a desk, and a stylish bathroom with a rainfall shower; it had all the amenities needed for a tranquil stay.

All overnight guests can book a private 30-minute session in the outdoor hot tub. I went for a late night dip, so I could enjoy the sun setting and view the beautiful stars. The water was the perfect temperature, with water jets and warm lighting to add to the oh-so-romantic atmosphere.

When it was time to rest my head, I quickly entered dreamland thanks to the comfortable king-sized bed and fluffy pillows.

THE ULTIMATE SPA SESSION

Moddershall Oaks is more than just a spa; it’s a tranquil setting to enjoy quality time with loved ones. In the heart of the property, couples will find an outdoor heated vitality pool to enjoy year-round regardless of the weather. Surrounding the pool are comfortable loungers, providing the ideal location to read a book and enjoy a bite from the spa deli. I loved the views of the rolling countryside from the Kelo sauna and the calming setting in the intimate relaxation lounge with comfy sofas and blankets to

snuggle up.

The indoor spa area was my favourite space, with a hydrotherapy pool plus two overhead water jets designed to massage the upper back and neck muscles, while helping to promote blood circulation. Some of my personal highlights included the steam room, the 10-meter pool, the foot baths, heated loungers and the experience shower.

I was lucky enough to experience an Indian-inspired head massage during my stay. The talented beauty therapist used the latest massaging techniques to help tackle the problem areas in my upper back, shoulders, neck, face and scalp. As someone who struggles with tension headaches, I didn’t realise how much I needed the treatment. For 25 minutes, my problems melted away while I focused on the relaxing music and the calming aromas.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to enjoy a two-course meal at The Oak House Restaurant after hearing great things about the menu. Spoiler alert, I wasn’t disappointed! Using local produce and fresh seasonal ingredients, where possible, the talented chefs created a feast. For my starter, I went with the lemongrass chicken bao buns with apple and cucumber salad and a spiced honey dressing. I opted for the beerbattered haddock fillet for my main, with skin-on triple-cooked chips, homemade tartare sauce and pea puree – the flavours were exquisite.

Wrapped in my fluffy robe, I returned to the restaurant for breakfast the following morning – the perfect way to start the day. I enjoyed a continental breakfast followed by avocado on toasted sourdough and a poached egg before walking around the lake and relaxing in the hammocks. I was sad to be checking out of this wonderful resort and can’t wait to return soon.
