Italways amazes me when one of our County Wedding Magazines reaches issue 100 ‒ it’s just such a big number isn’t it?! It takes around 17 years for this milestone and, now I’m showing my age, you’ll see my name in the first issue of most of them. Your Surrey Wedding is no exception. Launched in 2006, it was bright, busy, and very early noughties in terms of fashion, styling and colour palettes – there was a lot of pink! Fast-forward to 2023, the fonts are different, the logo’s slightly changed, the images are sharper and the inspiration is on-trend. However, our love of weddings hasn’t faltered, nor has the passion for shouting about local businesses; and, after the last few years we’ve had – don’t mention the c-word – Your Surrey Wedding is a support to businesses and readers in the local area now more than ever.
This issue, be sure to check out our Happy Birthday feature on page 15 which is like one giant birthday card; we have a waterside wedding venues article on page 29 and a ‘getting to know your photographer’ piece over on page 57. There’s inspiration aplenty from pages 36 to 50 where you can see how your fellow Surrey newlyweds tied the knot.

PAINSHILL RECEPTIONS IN 2024
Painshill in Cobham, is a gorgeous 18th-century landscape garden, full of romantic garden buildings and picturesque bridges. Around every corner is a stunning view, making the venue perfect for wedding photography. The landscape has been featured on Married At First Sight and was a location for Netflix’s Bridgerton
Ceremonies are held outside in the Gothic Temple, a beautiful white folly with views over the lake and meadows; and, new for summer 2024, the venue is delighted to announce that receptions can now take place within the grounds as well.
The Walled Garden is a private area to hire for the wedding breakfast and reception. The garden, which will be exclusively yours, boasts beautiful flowerbeds and a manicured lawn offering flexibility and a blank canvas to create the outdoor wedding of your dreams. Any style of cover can be used from a traditional white elegant marquee to a relaxed bohemian tipi. A dedicated wedding coordinator will be on hand to help every step of the way and can advise on recommended and trusted marquee and catering companies to use at the venue. The Painshill Walled Garden has power and toilets, meaning you can have a marquee wedding without having to worry about hiring in facilities. The venue also allows you and your marquee provider two days to set up and one day to take down, ensuring you have a completely stress-free wedding day and don’t have to rush.

1Guildford Manor Hotel and Spa
REWILD YOUR BODY AND SOUL
Birch (Selsdon), set within 200 acres of rolling hills and green space and just 30 minutes from the centre of London, is an escape from the everyday. A sister hotel to the award-winning Birch (Cheshunt), it’s a welcome respite from the noise and intensity of London’s concrete jungle where members and guests can find headspace, try new things, and have some fun along the way!
More than just a hotel, there’s nature to restore calm, menus designed to nourish, wellness to re-align body and mind, workshops to feed creativity, and music curated to soothe and re-energise.
At the heart of the estate sits a 19th-century Gothic-style mansion which has been added to over the centuries after it was first developed into a hotel in the 1920s. Birch has peeled back the property’s layers to reveal its true nature and bring out its best features, then added the usual Birch touch of craft and fun — this time with an extra splash of glamour.
Along with 181 bedrooms of all shapes and sizes, the hotel boasts a pottery studio and screen-printing workshop to make and create; a reading room and arcade provide space to switch off; active visitors can enjoy the lido (opening summer 2023), tennis courts, running and cycling tracks (outside). It also boasts a wellness space with gym, studios, and treatment rooms; while two restaurants and three bars will keep guests refreshed and full up. There are also communal areas for working hard… or hardly working!
Check out www.birchcommunity.com
Surrounded by 10 acres of lovely countryside, this hotel feels like a retreat from everyday life and therefore, one to indulge in some spa and leisure time. At the Aqua Spa & Health Club, there’s a state-of-theart gym to work up a sweat, as well as a swimming pool to dip into. Happy Birthday
Your Surrey Wedding has reached an exciting milestone, its 100th issue!
Issue one launched in October 2006, 17 years ago. One hundred issues later, here I am celebrating this milestone with my lovely co-pilot sales executive Anita Bridge helming the ship. It’s amazing to see how the magazine has changed over the years, down in the depths of the stock room I managed to find the very first issue and have a little flick through — unbelievably my name is in the first issue as the Fashion and Beauty editor! What remains though is a team passionate about weddings, dedicated to promoting lovely local businesses to couples tying the knot in the wonderful county of Surrey.
Thank you readers, thank you supporters, lots of love

To celebrate the 100th Issue of Your Surrey wedding, I’m delighted to be able to say I have been part of the journey and watched the magazine grow from strength to strength! I’ve been able to submit real weddings for publication as well as exclusive styled shoots as a leading expert in the field. The magazine is in line with the modern couple and enables me to spread the joy and freedom that having a celebrant-led wedding gives you! I’ve been featured on ‘ask the expert’ many a time, and am full of tips and insight. I love it when brides comment they found me in the magazine, or that they had already booked me, then felt so proud to then spot me in the publication – giving them the logical validation in the self-trust they felt when they booked me with all the emotion of love, excitement and joy that preparing for a marriage should bring HELEN NOBLE, HELEN NOBLE CELEBRANT OF SURREY, GUILDFORD https://helen-noble.co.uk

NUTFIELD PRIORY HOTEL & SPA
01737 824 400 | www.handpickedhotels.co.uk/nutfieldpriory
Perched upon Nutfield Ridge, discover the stunning British countryside surrounding this luxury four-star country house hotel and spa, which is regarded as one of the best venues in the area. Inspired by the NeoGothic splendour of the Palace of Westminster, this is a unique Victorian mansion house, dating back to 1872 its full of character and charm. It also boasts panoramic views and a castle turret — ideal for a fairytale wedding!
The stylish interior is adorned with fine paintings and many original features, making it a sought-after wedding venue. With elegant décor, spacious rooms, a relaxing spa and endless amenities, the house is an oasis of tranquillity.
There are three options for ceremonies. Originally the Morning Room, the Worth Room is ideal for an intimate wedding with 20 guests; small enough to feel cosy but with a grand high ceiling and original fireplace. Given its warm and welcoming feel, the Gibson Room (80) is a popular choice due to the ornate ceiling and wood panelling giving it an undeniable sense of grandeur. Finally, the Fielden Suite (100), the size of this room allows you to configure your ceremony layout however you choose. Large windows allow plenty of natural light and the neutral décor
is perfectly suited for any colour scheme.
For post-vow celebrations, The Leigh Room is the old Housekeepers Pantry and perfect for smaller gatherings from eight to 20. It’s at its best with everyone seated around a social oval table. The Gibson Room (60), the original Drawing Room of the house, is a beautiful space featuring a strapwork ceiling, marble fireplace and gold chandeliers. The Fielden Suite boasts a private bar, cloakroom and outdoor terrace, this is an exclusive space, ideal for wedding meals of up to 100 guests, and an evening party (140). The private terrace allow guests easy access to the lawn, perfect for al fresco reception drinks and garden games.
Lastly, The Grand Hall, with rich wood panelling, stained-glass windows, carved marble fireplace and original antique organ, can host a wedding meal (70) and evening party (200 using adjoining spaces) Outside, couples can utilise the grounds and hold reception drinks in the sunshine on the terrace area, just a few steps down from the main house. The hotel has 15 feature bedrooms and for that little extra indulgence, The Byron Suite located in the tower is spread over three floors and makes a wonderful choice for a honeymoon suite.
When tying the knot here the wedding couple benefit from the help of a wedding coordinator, a menu tasting with wines and indulge in an overnight stay in a suite on the night of the wedding.

The colour OF LOVE
Hannah and Ben’s wedding at Great Fosters had a pastel colour palette Images courtesy of Hayley Bray (HayleyB Weddings)
Meeting
on a night out in Bath during their University days, Hannah and Ben’s first date was a few weeks later where they chatted for hours about every topic under the sun. “Ben said his dance moves must have attracted me to him,” laughs Hannah. “I think it was his sense of humour and kind nature that I saw, once I got to know him better on our subsequent dates. Talking to him was easy and we quickly became best friends!”
Ben says that he loved Hannah’s confidence and how fun she was. “He liked my caring nature, but also my more adventurous side, which he quickly discovered on our dates,” adds Hannah. “He says that he was so keen, he started telling everyone we were together before he’d even asked me properly. Luckily, I felt the same and found it quite funny!”
The pandemic affected Ben’s proposal plans; he initially wanted to propose in the winter of 2020 on a trip to Finland to see the Northern Lights but due to the restrictions on travel abroad at the time the whole trip was cancelled. Instead, the couple spent a long weekend at Pennyhill Park in Surrey, “We had a lovely meal in one of the restaurants there and Ben had asked the staff to add some romantic decorations to the room,” recalls Hannah. “He proposed in the room once we returned from dinner, but not before we saw the decorations for another proposal in the grounds of the hotel (which confused me immensely when Ben claimed that they weren’t for us!). It was a surprise for me, which I think was quite important for him, as we had talked about it previously and I suspected that it would come at some point. However, I didn’t realise that he’d been sneaking out of the house to go into town to look at rings and that he’d organised all the extra stuff at the hotel, so it was a really lovely moment on the day!”
The big date was then set, 31st July 2022, with Great Fosters, Surrey setting the scene. Here, Hannah tells us more about their special day…
DECISIONS, DECISIONS
After visiting lots of different venues, arriving at Great Fosters, when they first drove down the long drive of the hotel they had a wow-factor moment. “It was very picturesque, the grounds around it are beautiful,” shares Hannah. “We loved that the whole day could be contained within one area of the hotel, and that this area was away from the other guests, making it feel a bit more private. We could see our wedding in our heads as soon as we walked into the Orangery and Tithe Barn; the Orangery was really bright and open, and we loved the aesthetic of the Barn, particularly the way it contrasted with the modern Orangery to give us the best of both worlds. There was a lovely outside area where the guests could go for the reception in good weather, and behind this, the gardens gave a fantastic setting for photos, with lots of greenery and colourful flowers. The location for us was also great, as we had a lot of family in the Surrey/Berkshire areas, and the abundance of rooms both on-site and in hotels close by were ideal for people who had travelled.” Great Fosters covered all the catering, the couple were able to select their meal and canapé choices beforehand by going for a menu tasting at the hotel. In the evening, they then offered handmade pizzas that were a big hit with the guests.
For the finer details of the day, Hannah and Ben opted for mini packets of Love Heart sweets with custom wrapping paper for favours – the pastel colours matched the colour scheme of the day. The tables were named after places in Bath that are important to the couple. “The top table was called The Huntsman, which is the pub that we had our first date in,” explains Hannah. “Ben’s mum made a small watercolour painting of each location to accompany the list of people on each table, which we really appreciated that personal touch.”
For the table centrepieces, there were two designs: candles inside glass vases surrounded by a wreath of flowers that matched the pastel colour scheme, and the alternate ones had large displays of the same flowers sitting on silver candelabra.
The floral decorations throughout the day were all pastel colours complemented with green foliage. They were largely a mix of ivory, blush and pale blue, matching the colours of the suits and bridesmaids’ dresses. “We also had a flower arch in the ceremony that we then used in the evening for the backdrop of our photo booth,” shares Hannah.
The couple’s big-day bake was a four-tier pearlescent-effect design with sugar flowers draped on the top and the bottom to coordinate with the floral
displays. The flavours were lemon, peach, salted caramel and chocolate fudge.
Other décor around the venue included fairylights wrapped around the pillars of the barn and joined together in a canopy above the tables in the centre of the room. There was draping in the Orangery also, and large ‘Mr & Mrs Smith’ light-up letters which people loved to take pictures with!
LOOKING THE PART
Hannah’s wedding dress was a classic ballgown silhouette with a modern off-the-shoulder neckline made by Essence of Australia bought from Aurora Bride in Cheam. “I chose that style because the neckline was very flattering and it felt very bridal,” says Hannah. “A big bonus was that it also had pockets (who doesn’t love pockets?!)”. The bridal shoes were from Charlotte Mills which had a pearl detail matching Hannah’s earrings and tiara. “In the evening, I was tempted by a second dress, but the lovely ladies at the bridal shop instead suggested a sparkle over-skirt so I went with that,” adds Hannah.
The groom wore a navy-blue wool suit from Moss Bros that had a gold and blue marble-style lining on the inside of the jacket. He then had an oat-coloured waistcoat with the same marble design on the back, teamed with a white shirt, tie and pocket square in a blush-pink floral design that matched the bridesmaids’ dresses. The groomsmen wore the same suit as Ben without the special lining, and their waistcoats were navy-blue, but the rest of the details such as the tie were the same.
The bridesmaids wore blush-pink dresses from Maids to Measure. “I wanted the girls to feel comfortable on the day, we agreed on a colour and material, then the girls chose the style of dress that suited them the best,” shares Hannah.
TIME TO CELEBRATE
During the day, a string trio called Nero played relatively modern songs for the ceremony and then continued during the drinks reception whilst everybody was outside in the gardens.
“It was super-special to have live music during the ceremony and Nero provided a great atmosphere whilst everybody was catching up afterwards,” recalls Hannah. In the evening, a band played two one-hour sets, and they also learnt the couple’s first dance song. “They were called Reverse Reverb and were fantastic, a real hit with the guests,” shares Hannah. “The lead singer was particularly strong vocally, and we received lots of positive comments about them afterwards. They played a mix of songs that everybody loved, with some special requests we’d thrown in.” The couple had a photo booth during the evening reception that was in constant use. “People loved the props and we have ended up with a book of really funny photos at the end of the night!”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS
Hannah, naturally, struggled to sleep the night before because she was so excited, but in the morning, even though it was a bit of a whirlwind, her bridesmaids and glam team took away some of the nerves and kept her calm. “As I was walking down the aisle, I felt like it had been a long time coming, so I was really relieved that the day was finally here. We had worked so hard to put this day together and now we could finally enjoy celebrating with our friends and family,” recalls Hannah.
In the morning, Ben says that he was very nervous and excited, but didn’t have time to really think about it too much, as he was running around, organising a few last-minute things for later in
the day. “When I was walking down the aisle, he says that he could feel his heart-beating in his chest, but he was really glad to see me happy and smiling,” adds Hannah, “He thought I looked beautiful and it distracted him from everyone looking at him intently — he normally hates that kind of thing!”
BIG-DAY HIGHLIGHTS
Ben doesn’t really like being in the spotlight, but his speech was a standout moment, “I was surprised by how confident he seemed. He’s also not very good at expressing his emotions most of the time, but he said some lovely things that got me. Lots of people complimented him on it after!”
As you can see from Hannah and Ben’s pictures, the couple had a wonderful time in the grounds of the hotel with their bridal party and coloured smoke bombs. “It was really fun to do, so much so that some of the groomsmen said it was their favourite part of the day! It also produced some great photos, as well as some funny ones where we all look like school children running around,” shares Hannah. “Lastly, for me, the band was also fantastic, and I distinctly remember everyone singing along at the top of their voices to Mr.Brightside towards the end of the night. We were all having so much fun and the band looked like they were enjoying themselves as well.”
For Ben, he liked the times where the newlyweds spent small amounts of time to themselves just to chat. “They were few and far between on the day, but they were nice to have. We just talked about everything that had happened,” adds Hannah.
The Smiths (Ben’s family) have a tradition that they do at every wedding, where they go around all of the tables and take bets on the length of the speeches. “This was quite funny for the people that had no idea about it beforehand,” recalls Hannah. “Most people got involved by the end. The winner with the closest time then gets the pot, so this announcement at the end of the speeches seemed almost as important as the speeches themselves! Whilst this was going on, the women’s final of the Euros was also happening, so throughout the speeches, we could see a few people at the back looking down at their phones, but they (mostly) kept quiet when goals were being scored. A few cheers may have slipped out during the best man’s speech, but he let it slide.”
A GROUP EFFORT
“Our parents really did a lot for us on the day. They went above and beyond to take any role that we threw at them and delivered in all aspects, alleviating some of our stress and making the day extra special,” shares Hannah. “Hayley and Ash (photographer and videographer respectively) were people that really stood out during the day because they thought about how we could best enjoy everything whilst getting all of the photos/ footage that we needed. They managed to get all of the different groups together without it being too forced or time-consuming and they whisked us away for short periods of times to allow us to have some breathing space, which we really appreciated.”

FROM ITALY
with love
Bruna and Dylan’s wedding day was filled with personal touches and had a gorgeous autumn colour palette

Bruna and Dylan met on dating app Hinge, after the usual cheesy chat up lines and a few weeks of conversation they decided to meet up at Four Thieves in Clapham. “After that night, we have spent every day together,” shares Bruna. “After six months of dating the dreaded Covid lockdown started and we made the decision to move in together, which was a leap of faith! Luckily, we survived the trial very early in the relationship and have been going strong since then.” Bruna was attracted to Dylan’s kindness and how easy it was to talk to him. “From the moment I met him it was like we had known each other our whole lives. I know its cheesy when they say when you meet the one you know, but that is it, I just knew after a few hours of meeting him.” Dylan adds, “I was attracted to Bruna’s Latina flair and personality that made me both excited and nervous – a good combination on a first date! She was very easy to talk to – the wine definitely helped – and we just connected instantly, it felt like we had known each other our whole lives too.”
Dylan has been visiting the Lake District every year with his family since he was a child, so it was the perfect proposal setting with meaning to them both. “After a long day of hiking, Dylan asked me to go have a look at the sunset, as we know the Lakes are known for being rainy and cold,” shares Bruna. “However, that evening was beautiful and warm. After much arguing about whether we should go or not, his family persuaded me. Little did I know they were all in on the secret. We walked to a lovely bench with a fantastic view. I turned around and Dylan was on one knee, telling me all the lovely things about our relationship. He then popped the question, and although it is all a bit of a blur to me, I managed to say yes!”
The big date was set, 24th October 2022, with The Barn at Bury Court setting the scene and a forest green and Italy theme running throughout the day…
SETTING THE SCENE
“The venue felt like the one from the moment we stepped in. The staff at Bury Court made us feel very welcome and answered all our questions with enthusiasm. It had both the barn feel we were looking for as well as a sophisticated touch,” explains Bruna.
When thinking about big-day colour palettes the couple opted for a forest green scheme as it suited their Autumn wedding. “The Italian table themes come from my background,” says Bruna. “I grew up in Northern Italy and it felt important to me to include it. We travelled around Italy in the summer before our wedding and were able to collect ‘memories’ which we added to our table decorations.”
LOOKING THE PART
Bruna wore a Grace Loves Lace gown, “I fell in love with it as soon as I tried it on,” Bruna shares. “A little bit like my husband I knew it was the one as soon as I saw it. I wanted something simple yet elegant and memorable, and this gown fit the brief perfectly, it was exactly what I was looking for.”
The groom and groomsmen looked dapper in matching Moss Bros suits, while the bridesmaids complemented the autumnal theme with identical forest green-coloured dresses with a neckline that matched Bruna’s bridal dress.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS
“On the day we felt amazing, everything went perfectly,” recalls Bruna. “We felt comfortable and the happiest we have ever felt.” The groom’s speech was one of the most special moments for Bruna. “Dylan is a very shy person, but he absolutely blew me away with his speech; he even went to the lengths of adding a
few sentences in Portuguese for my grandparents that had made the journey all the way here to attend the wedding. Because they do not speak any English, Dylan still wanted to make them feel included.”
There is always a funny story, or two, when families get together for a wedding day, for Bruna and Dylan it was the bride’s step-father having such a good time he had to be carried to bed after one too many! “Luckily, our lovely venue included charming accommodation for guests staying the night,” adds Bruna.
ABOVE AND BEYOND
A wedding day wouldn’t be possible without lots of lovely suppliers helping along the way; the staff at Bury Court made the couple’s day run smoothly. “We are very thankful,” adds Bruna. “Bark ‘n’ Render were the best caterers we could have asked for too; not only was the food fantastic, they ensured everyone was catered for even a last-minute allergy request!”
When it comes to working with your photographer, it’s essential a couple are made to feel at ease which is exactly what Bruna and Dylan found in Jesse, of Jessica Grace Photography, “Jesse made us feel so comfortable, she was so subtle with her photography style we didn’t even notice pictures being taken, which is what we wanted!
“Finally, having my grandparents travel all the way from Brazil at 87 and 77 made our wedding so special. I’m forever grateful they were able to be part of such a special day.”
AND RELAX…
Bruna and Dylan enjoyed a much-need minimoon in Paris after their nuptials. “We stayed in the lovely Kimpton Hotel which was wonderful and filled with amazing food throughout our break.” This Easter though, the couple are enjoying a honeymoon to Japan and South Korea. “We planned the honeymoon together and are really looking forward to it.”
A FINAL THOUGHT…
When it comes to wedding planning, Bruna says, “Enjoy the process, don’t stress too much as everything will fall in to place. Trust the people around you to help, include the people you love in the preparation.
“During the day take a moment with just your partner to take it all in just the two of you. But most importantly, have fun. If something hasn’t gone according to plan no one will notice but you. So let it go, take a deep breath and enjoy your special day.”

Home is where the heart is
Megan’s family home set the scene for her nuptials to Sam
Images courtesy of Rachel Thornhill Photography
Megan and Sam met at a wedding; Sam’s brother Oli happened to be marrying Megan’s best friend Steph ‒ he was the best man she the bridesmaid – and the rest is history!
“When Sam proposed, it was a complete surprise,” shares Megan. “Our relationship had progressed quickly, we took my family dog Henry on a walk to The Haycutter pub, in Broadham Green, Surrey. Walking across the field I was walking slightly ahead and turned round to find Sam down on one knee! Rachel Thornhill, who was to be our wedding photographer, was hiding in the bushes and captured the whole thing!
“Needless to say, we never made it to the pub. Sam insisted we went back to the farm, as we call it, to tell my parents. Upon arrival all our best friends and family were there as a surprise to congratulate us – it was a good job I said yes!”
Initially the couple had planned a huge marquee wedding with 200 people in the field right by where Sam had proposed – the farmer had given permission to use it – and the date was set for 29th May, 2021. As the pandemic continued, their plans for a big wedding got less likely, eventually they postponed to the following year. “Shortly after this we discovered that we were expecting a baby due to be born in December 2021,” shares Megan. “So our plans changed yet again. It was Sam’s idea to have the reception at the farm, my family home. My parents had recently had a beautiful courtyard renovated and it seemed a perfect setting for a small wedding of 30 people. I immediately had a vision of how the day would be, rustic, laid-back, intimate and most of all fun. The church is next door to the farm and my grandfather, Hugh, was the church warden when he was alive. It’s where my parents got married and where my grandparents are buried. Although we aren’t church-goers, it’s a place very close to the family and only a short walk!”
The big date was set 13th August, 2021, with St Peter’s Church, Tandridge and Tandridge Court Farm setting the scene. Here, Megan tells us more about their day…
We’ve had a cactus theme running throughout our lives, we won’t go into why as it’s rather personal, so we thought it rather apt to gift everyone a mini cactus as a favour.
Our cake was made by our lovely caterer Andrea. She had catered at a friend’s wedding, and she had to put their wedding cake back together (not made by her) after it slid off the table and on to the floor in the heat ‒ I said to myself ‘whenever I get married, she is making my cake!’‒ she knew all about the foundations of building a sturdy wedding cake! Even though ours was very small and simple, it was utterly scrumptious – every piece was devoured.
Initially I wanted simple florals for the centrepieces, but the courtyard is such a colourful place full mum’s favourite flowers, geraniums, it didn’t feel right. Dora, our gorgeous florist came up with the idea of a meadow theme; lots of different coloured flowers in different sized jars and vases running down the centres and it looked sensational.
Tables were named after our favourite songs.Sam wore a beautiful Hugo Boss light-blue suit with matching waistcoat. Sam’s brother, Oli, wore the same while my eightyear-old twin boys, Sam’s “best small people” on the day, Zac and Charlie wore cute chino shorts, Converse trainers and Ralph Lauren shirts.
Both Rachel (photographer) and Abigail (videographer) were utterly wonderful! I barely noticed either of them all day apart from on the mini shoots we did, we had such a giggle with the two of them. Despite having never met we seemed to become besties on the day which I loved! The end result was more amazing than we could have wished for and I couldn’t recommend either of them enough!
My dad, Martin, drove me on the day in his recently purchased bright yellow Classic VW Beetle – my best friend Steph had attached ‘Just Married’ cans to the back!
The catering options were all locally sourced using locally produced meats and vegetables – not forgetting the famous homemade chocolate brownies from Sam’s mum!
My dress was simple, I was six months pregnant so actually wore a bridesmaid’s dress but in white, of course! I felt superelegant and beautiful, but the setting and the venue was everything to me, not the dress somehow!
I wrote a short humorous bio about each guest to help get conversation flowing. My sisters Kate and Sammy were bridesmaids. They wore white bodysuits with lilac tulle skirts, they looked stunning.
We had an incredible two-piece band Super Spokes, everyone danced under the stars all night! There was a fantastic cocktail bar too.
For me being walked down the aisle by my lovely dad to These Are The Days by Van Morisson was a special moment. Music is hugely important to dad and I, and something we have a significant bond over. Sam and I walked back down after saying our ‘I dos’ to Don’t Stop by Fleetwood Mac, a song with very significant words to us as a couple!
Other standout moments include dad getting out of his suit and throwing on his shorts and polo shirt within five minutes of getting back to the farm!
Zac and Charlie standing on the climbing frame singing along with the band to Sweet Caroline (it was the year of the Euros!).
On the day we were unbelievably relaxed and happy. We loved the intimacy of it, it was a fab day with our best friends and family, and it was clear it meant the world to everyone to have been included.
Seeing Sam’s face when he realised I had written a poem for him and thought I might outdo his speech. And, finally, Sam’s trousers almost ripping at the alter when we knelt to pray and me getting the giggles and us being told by the Vicar to ‘behave’.
For our honeymoon we went to Antigua. It was wonderful and quiet as the island was still in lockdown. There’s nothing we like doing more than having a few drinks together, so it was also quiet for us as I couldn’t drink due to being pregnant! However, on reflection, the peace was much needed before the impending carnage of another baby boy!

Behind THE LENS
Here’s your chance to meet the person behind the camera
MEET RYAN, OF RYAN COX PHOTOGRAPHY
In the beginning…
My passion for photography started from a young age when I used to go to Paris a couple of times a year to stay with a French family; the father was an old black and white photographer with his own dark room and used to shoot the most amazing street-style images. My dad bought me my first camera, a Chinon CE4 and a 50mm lens, which I used to take everywhere with me. I played roller hockey for GB and England and travelled the world playing and always took my camera to capture my travels. I had my own little dark room to develop my film and have always loved black and white images.
I’ve been capturing weddings for 25 years and have now started shooting weddings for the children of my couples from the beginning of my professional journey.
If I wasn’t a wedding photographer, I’d love to do more wildlife and travel photography and definitely if the opportunity arose be a full-time wildlife photographer, I would love to have the time to just sit and watch nature and capture its beauty, the amazing animals and documenting their lives.
For the love of weddings…
I love the bridal prep, there’s always a buzz of excitement and also it’s the first page of my job to tell the story of the day. Capturing moments as the story unfolds from meeting the make-up and hair artists to filming the venue being dressed and all the other elements coming together so that
when the guests arrive it all looks perfect. We are then on to capturing the next chapters of the day to create my storybook of images for the couple.
The long-term relationships I have with many of my couples is what makes shooting weddings so special, being asked to do bump shoots for their babies, christenings, birthdays and capturing their children at photo shoots as they grow up, and of course as is now happening, capturing their children’s weddings.
Golden nugget advice…
For a couple, find a photographer whose work you love and book them, get to know them and share your vision of your day and then you will get the images you want.
What’s your favourite film/food/song?
A Star is Born with Lady Gaga and Notting Hill – I’m a big softie so I love chick flicks.
Italian and Spanish food! I love paella and Spanish seafood but Italian has to come first especially as it’s one of my favourite countries to visit and also where I love shooting weddings.
I have favourites from all genres of music, I was born in the ‘60s so I’m always singing along to songs from way back and up to the present day.

MEET RACHEL OF RACHEL THORNHILL PHOTOGRAPHY
In the beginning…
When I started my business, I focussed on portraits, families, children, pets, children with pets and so on. I knew I wanted to learn the ropes properly, so I took on a six-month work experience placement with a brilliant portrait photographer called Paul Wilkinson who has a beautiful studio Buckinghamshire. For two days a week, I assisted him on his sessions, and soon after I worked with him on a wedding. I completely fell in love with the whole process and even now, six years on, I spend most of the time with a huge smile on my face. I love my job!
Before I was a professional photographer, I worked in the record industry and ran a recording studio and video editing suite in Kensington. One of my roles was to film artist idents (video), and I’d often be sent all over the place to meet artists, often who had just arrived from the airport, so the last thing they’d want to do was be filmed. So, I learnt quite quickly how far a smile and being polite goes! Which definitely helps during the family group photographs ‒ working quickly, being polite and wearing a big smile mean we get them done and back to the celebrating before you know it!
As a working portrait photographer who shoots weddings, I choose to only take on a handful of weddings a year. I like to allow enough time in my workflow to meet with my couples before the big day, to have a walk through at the venues, and make a timeline of the day including other relevant suppliers, so that we’re not only all working together on the same page but maximising the opportunities for beautiful photographs with the best experience for my couples and their guests. Working well alongside other suppliers is always very important to me, because we are all there on the same team, helping everyone have the most amazing day. Having a schedule and a shot list in advance really helps things go smoothly.
For the love of weddings…
My favourite part of a wedding day? Oh goodness, so many! I see this in terms of my favourite shots to capture: the father-of-the-bride seeing his daughter for the first time, the first kiss, the walk back up the aisle after the ceremony are all very classic moments. But I think I’d have to say the speeches; I love capturing people’s expressions, the laughter, the tears,
especially from relatives!
However, the icing on the cake for me is winning awards from the photographs that I know mean so much to my clients. I never go out with the purpose of shooting for awards, but magic often happens on the day and I’m ready to capture it.
I’ll always remember a wedding at Hartsfield Manor when the bride’s veil was misbehaving, and as we were coming back inside, a gust of wind took it off her head and up over the roof of the hotel before disappearing. She was understandably distraught, as it was her late grandmother’s veil and a family heirloom. We spoke to the hotel management to see if there was any chance that anyone could help us find it, but we needed to get the speeches under way. Fifteen-minutes later, just as the mother-of-thebride was asking everyone to raise a glass to those who were no longer with us, the manager of the hotel appeared with the veil in his arms, with not a mark on it! They’d found it caught on one of the turrets and had carefully retrieved it. We all joked that grandma definitely made her presence felt that day!
Golden nugget advice…
Try not to do too much on the day yourself. Delegate as much as you can, as people are often very happy to be involved!
What’s your favourite film/food/song?
Has to be Four Weddings and a Funeral, the first wedding was filmed at my church, St Michael’s Betchworth. I remember my friends and I seeing part of the filming, and telling everyone that Mr Bean was in the film and no-one believed us! And it’s why I always try to capture a photograph of the best man with the rings before the ceremony ‒ to make sure he has them!
So many first dance gems when it comes to favourite songs. All of Me by John Legend I adore, and it reminds me of shooting weddings at the Crazy Bear in Stadhampton; Grow Old With Me by Tom O’Dell always makes me smile, as does Shut up and Dance by Walk The Line, which always fills a dancefloor!

MEET DENISE, OF DENISE WINTER PHOTOGRAPHY
In the beginning…
I’ve had an interest in photography for as long as I can remember, it was always people and places, a way of documenting my memories. I travelled extensively for work so when I had my son in 2007 and knew I needed a career change. I signed up to a four-day course which covered wedding and portrait photography with some of the most awarded and prestigious photographers. One of the wedding photographers teaching on the course offered to mentor me and share his knowledge. At the same time, I started second shooting for a wedding photography studio. After two weddings I was completely hooked. I loved the unpredictability of a wedding day, the raw emotions and the overwhelming feeling of love, I still feel this gratitude today. Since 2007 I have documented 612 weddings, that is a lot of love-filled moments.
If I wasn’t a photographer, I would still be working with people, I enjoy the energy of being with people and I also have a strong interest in human psychology and behaviour, so maybe a therapist or a support worker to young adults and teens.
For the love of weddings…
A wedding day is filled with many pure moments, one of my favourites is the bride seeing her parents once she is wedding ready. There is a lot of focus on the father-of-the-bride at this point, but I feel the mother-of-thebride is equally important. You can feel the emotions and see the bond they share; it’s beautiful.
With a career spanning 16 years, there have been many treasured memories. If I had to pick one, it would be a wedding I did for a couple who met under awful circumstances during the London bombing in 2005. He was a firefighter who had helped in her rescue. It was incredible to think that out of something so awful, a beautiful and pure love story was born.
Golden nugget advice…
I have two pieces of advice for a couple planning their wedding day. The first is time, always allow enough time. The day will pass quickly, factor enough time to enjoy your reception, to chat comfortably with your family
and friends, to be able to stop to soak up the atmosphere. With enough time on your day, you will feel present in the moment rather than rushing and feeling harassed. My second piece of advice may seem obvious, hire the wedding suppliers you feel completely confident with, and have complete trust they will do the best job for you. Sometimes they may not be the cheapest option, but there is no price for the peace of mind they will give you on your wedding day.
What’s your favourite film/food/song?
I enjoy most cuisine, but if I had to choose a favourite it would be Thai or Indian. I am half Burmese and growing up our house always had the aroma of spices and herbs.
I love music and you will often find me shaking my booty on the dancefloor whilst taking photos. There are far too many amazing songs to choose just one, but if I had to it would be The Foundations Build Me Up Buttercup. I’m not sure why or how, but it somehow became a song me and my children would sing and dance to when they were younger. Even now they are teens, we still have a sing-along when we hear it.

BAN THE BLOAT
Professional nutritionists Wedding Wellness explain how to avoid untimely bloating on your wedding day
Oneof the most common digestive complaints is bloating, an uncomfortable, sometimes heavy sensation that can follow after eating a meal that for some, also results in feeling tired, unable to concentrate and having a physically noticeable bloated tummy. Not symptoms you want to endure on any day, let alone on one as special as your wedding.
There are many possible causes of bloating, some of which come with additional digestive complaints such as pain, constipation and flatulence – usually an indication of poor gut health. These symptoms are usually referred to as IBS by doctors, but may also be the result of intolerances, allergies or other gut disease. There are however some simple, everyday things you can consider to help reduce that after-meal bloat. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, chatted to Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness to find out more.
CHEW PROPERLY
Most of us chow down through conversation, mid emails or in front of the telly without giving much thought to chewing our food. But, there are enzymes in the mouth that kick start digestion and if you haven’t allowed enough time for them to work in the mouth, it can make life more difficult for the rest of the gut to properly break down food, leading to irritation and bloating. Aim to chew each bite 20 to 30
times to allow the gut to digest with ease.
EAT AWAY FROM DISTRACTIONS
Focussing on food in front of you not only helps you to taste it better, your brain also has the chance to engage with what you see and smell before the first bite. Without the distraction of something else, potentially stressful, such as work emails, social media, or the latest crime drama on TV, your body is in a state of calm referred to as “rest and digest,” which is optimal at meal times. An otherwise engaged body won’t produce enough stomach acid to properly break down food, which may result in bloating and irritation. Take a proper lunch break, sit at the dining table without the TV on and put your phone away to allow your gut to concentrate on doing its thing.
START WITH SOMETHING BITTER
Ever wondered why a bitter green salad usually accompanies steak, or mint sauce is served with lamb? Bitter foots such as rocket, kale, chicory, lemon and watercress help kick start the digestive process by encouraging stomach acid production. This is especially important for meals that include fats and red meat, which compared to other foods, take longer to break down. Include raw and bitter foods with a lemon or vinegary dressing to start your meal and help your gut prepare for optimal digestion.
AVOID DRINKING WITH MEALS
It’s important for the stomach to be very acidic when digesting food, but drinking lots of liquid between mouthfuls can lower the concentration of acid, reducing the rate at which the gut digests. It’s recommended to drink 20 to 30 minutes before or after a meal to aid efficient digestion and prevent bloating. If you do like to drink with your food, stick to smaller sips rather than large gulps.
LOOK OUT FOR PATTERNS
If you tend to feel bloated after most meals, take note of what might be causing it. Some common culprits can be gluten or wheat, dairy, sugar, or fat-heavy foods such as red meat and fried foods. Compare how you feel when you don’t eat these items to get an idea of triggers or possible intolerances. Speak to a health professional for tailored advice and support on how to improve your symptoms with functional testing available for further insight.

Q&AFashion & Beauty
Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best
THE EYES HAVE IT
Q: I’d love to have a full-lash look for my wedding day but have never had any form of faux lashes applied before. What do you advise in terms of style, timings and upkeep for a newbie like me?
I always recommend having a trial of any new beauty treatment, whether it be a tan, facial or lashes — and nothing new the week before!
With lashes, if you’re having a make-up artist for the big day then this is a great starting point to get them to try the lashes out for you. Most make-up artists should offer false lashes, I personally use little cluster lashes which look very natural and have a similar effect to the semi-permanent ones. Also, what’s great about them is if you don’t like them, they come off quickly and easily with make-up remover.
If you love the look of these then book in for your first lash appointment. I recommend having a full set done six weeks prior to the wedding day. You can then book an infill for three weeks before and your final infill the week before the wedding. This way you have two practice attempts to decide on your perfect lash length, curl and fullness. There are so many different options with lashes, you want to find the perfect set for you. Plus, this gives you the time to get used to how they feel. Lashes need an infill every two to three weeks, so if you’re going off on your honeymoon straight after the wedding, they should last perfectly for this.
Becca Gray, professional make-up artist www.beccagray.co.ukTHOROUGHLY MODERN
Q: I’m looking for a modern wedding dress, what styles, fabrics and design features should I opt for.
When looking for a modern wedding dress design, I believe the key features to look out for in your dress search are elements of architectural design. This can be in the style of the gown such as one-shoulder gowns, those with puffy sleeves, offthe-shoulder designs, square necklines, or beaded detailing.
When looking for a modern fabric, these can range from silk, satin, and Mikado, to taffeta and lace.
However, never forget even a modern style should reflect you, your personality, and your own personal style.

She told me, “Yes, it’s a beautiful tan for brides. However, I’d always recommend to apply tan the day before. This way, you can be prepped and make sure you apply evenly without any worries or concerns on the morning of your wedding. It is zero transfer but as the tan starts to take, you want to make sure you’re super-confident, as it comes through over four to eight hours. So, always apply the day, evening or 24 hours before your big day. It leaves you with a beautiful rich, medium glow and with the skin being so hydrated it just beams.”

DAWN ‘TIL DUSK
Left with a hole in my life when my previous primer ran out I was bereft. Until Milk’s Pore Eclipse Mattifying Primer landed on my desk that is. This lightweight water cream makeup primer with skincare benefits claims to blur pores and control shine for a long-lasting soft matte finish, and I can confirm it does just that. It feels fantastic to apply and leaves skin feeling satin smooth. After a long day visiting London recently my foundation looked as good when I arrived home as it did when I left. What’s more, it’s 90 per cent natural, clean, vegan, cruelty-free, noncomedogenic, paraben-free, and silicone-free. I’ve found a new favourite! £31, www.cultbeauty.co.uk

OH-SO NATURAL
Founded in 1996, Ringana is a pioneering Austrian skincare company creating products so fresh it’s recommended they’re used within 10 weeks of opening. As well as using fantastic vegan formulations, the products also feature some of 2023’s most sought after active ingredients. I love the Tinted Moisturiser from the brand’s FRESH range, containing squalane. This olive-oil based ingredient is becoming increasingly popular because it helps to reconstitute our hydrolipidic film and is easily absorbed without leaving an oily residue behind. It works to strengthen the skin’s barrier and maintain hydration too. As a result, this gorgeous moisturiser creates a radiant, perfectly even complexion. Plus, the product covers the skin in a delicate tint, thanks to mineral pigments that adapt beautifully to its tone erasing small defects, redness and pigmentation spots. £40.80 (€46,90), www.ringana.com
ENCOUNTER THE ELEMENTS
This year sees perfume house Issey Miyake present two new fragrances: L’Eau d’Issey Pivonie (£68, 50ml) and L’Eau d’Issey pour Homme Vétiver (£59, 50ml). The two launches celebrate nature in all its beauty, starting with water, of course, but also ushering in lush, vibrant florals and the intensity of vetiver.
L’Eau d’Issey Pivoine is 87 per cent made up of ingredients of natural origin, while this proportion for L’Eau d’Issey pour Home Vétiver is even higher at 93 per cent. These ingredients are exclusively sourced in a manner that respects the principles of fair trade and are responsibly harvested.
The perfect duo for the perfect duo! Available exclusively at The Perfume Shop from 26th March, 2023.

TRIED & TESTED
Having keenly followed celebs’ ravings about Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream on social media, excitement levels at CWM HQ were high when a tub arrived in the office. Editor Olivia Gibson stepped up to try it, here’s what she had to say:
“This cream smells unbelievable and absorbs quickly, leaving behind beautifully hydrated skin, and after the first use I noticed a smooth and refreshed feeling. Fast-forward a few weeks and my skin now appears firmer and tighter too.
This award-winning product is free from parabens, soy, artificial colours, phthalates, sulphates and mineral oils – it’s suitable for vegans and is crueltyfree too. With skin-loving ingredients including guaraná, cupuaçu butter, coconut oil, açaí oil, Brazil nut and more – this cream is the ultimate body skincare product.” Find it at www.lookfantastic.com, £20
SHINE BRIGHT
I’ve fallen in particular for the Green Mandarin Aromaplastie Glow Booster Mask, which is designed to boost radiance and revitalise the complexion. A potent treatment that brightens and energises dull and tired-looking skin, offers the ideal pre-wedding boost. £37, www.facethefuture.co.uk
LUSCIOUS LASHES
LEGIT Lashes is Huda
Kattan’s debut mascara that’s been more than four years in the making. It features not one, but two full-size mascaras in one product. An innovative combo, it’s the ultimate multitasker helping to achieve the three pillars of luscious lashes – volume, length, and curl – in seconds. Each wand works effortlessly to give you the lashes you’re after, with both ends loaded with Huda’s signature extra black, Black-2 Liquid pigment. £24, https://hudabeauty.com
eSalon’s Silk Shine (£17) is a nourishing argan oil treatment that increases shine, strengthens hair and protects colour. Just a few small pumps (or one if you have short hair like me) gives hair an instantly radiant shine, while hydrating dry-to-the-touch ends and safeguarding against colour fade. It’s done wonders for the condition of my hair and a little does indeed go a long way.

Wedding entertainment choice for all ages throughout the day and night
Whenit comes to planning a wedding the dress, the flowers and cake, are all mentioned before heads are turned towards thinking about wedding entertainment. Now, here at Your Surrey Wedding we think that’s the wrong order! When people think back to your wedding day what they will remember is how they felt, the atmosphere and the laughter, and this is all created by your big-day entertainers. When

Kevin says, “I feel a tribute act is great for couples and they can rest assured they have the official No.1 Elton John act performing at their wedding! The performance is live on a beautiful baby grand piano, with every song suited for young and old guests as everyone knows Elton John. There are famous slower dances and faster well-known hits, also to end it with the Patty Man covering artist and songs from a wide repertoire from the ‘60s to present day!”

thinking back to some weddings I’ve attended in the last couple of years, I recall one friend had an amazing saxophone player and another had a live indie band; on both days, I can’t remember the speeches or vows –don’t tell anyone!
Here’s a varied round up of some brilliant entertainment options in the Surrey area…
FIRST DANCE STUDIOS
Weddings are a celebration, a time to have a party and a bit of a dance, and the first dance is the perfect way to polish off the day. First Dance Studios has been teaching couples up and down the country how to dance for their weddings for more than 20 years. The team behind the company, Katie and Emma, say, “That’s about 2,000 couples so far. We’ve taught our lovely couples everything from a basic turn to more elaborate dance holds and much more. Whether it’s a tango you want to treat yourself to, or a jive to keep you bouncing or an elegant waltz, whatever your dance style, whatever your song, we’ll come up with your perfect dance. But the one thing all the dances have in common is that they are fun, wonderful dances.”
Dancing at any celebration is a great way to enjoy and express yourself; at a wedding it’s the dance of all dances! Then how about getting the party started? “Group dances are really popular, and we do hen parties as well,” shares Katie and Emma. “We love showing people how to have a good time. So, when you need a first dance to really show yourselves off, then come along to First Dance Studios
we’ll make sure your dance shines!”

MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE
What should we consider before booking a photographer?
•Do you like their work? Don’t just decide based on price, have you seen a wide selection of their work from different weddings.
•Do you get on with the photographer? You could be spending approx 10 hours with them depending on your requirements and if there’s no connection between you it could be an unwanted partnership, make sure your personalities connect.
•Have you seen reviews and testimonials from previous couples to see what they have previously done?
•Are they receptive to your ideas or shoot the style of work you want from your photographer?
•Know what you want from your photographer, do they shoot the style you want, do they provide you with the images you want, can they accommodate your needs to ensure you have a wonderful day?
•Do they have the resources to ensure there are no loss of images or damage to equipment during the day?
BESPOKE CEREMONIES
My partner and I have different backgrounds and cultures, how can we incorporate this into our wedding ceremony as we’re feeling limited with the conventional offering from a registrar.
A celebrant-led ceremony can include absolutely anything that you want and there are no limitations to what you can do. Therefore this would be the ideal option in order to give you the freedom to include elements from your respective backgrounds in your very own, personally designed bespoke ceremony. A celebrant will strive to incorporate all your requests to fulfil your wishes by creating the perfect wedding day for you to remember forever. The only point that you will need to consider is that if you wish your marriage to fulfil the legal requirements required by law, then you will also need to organise a separate ceremony performed by a registrar.
Karen
Dapson, Bespoke Ceremonies bespokeceremonies@outlook.comby Karen
Your Surrey Wedding says: Why not incorporate different readings/ poems reflective of your cultures? You could use the colours of your country’s flags for a sand ceremony or hand-fasting ribbons! Could you include traditional wedding elements from either background, such as plate smashing or jumping the broom? A celebrant-led ceremony allows you to write you own vows where you can reflect on your backgrounds and faiths, and you’re unrestricted with musical choices where, again, you can pick songs that mean something to you both.
•Are they insured?
•How long have they been shooting weddings?
•Don’t over complicate booking your photographer, select a few whose work you like then find the one you get on with so you can trust them on the day to give you beautiful images and tell your story.
•To avoid being disappointed once you have found your photographer, book them! I have seen a few very disappointed couples who wanted to book me but left it too late, someone else had then booked me and their desired date has gone.
•Hire someone you can trust and then trust them to give you the images you want so you can enjoy the day and look back at the memories after with their beautiful images.
Ryan Cox, Ryan Cox Photography www.ryancoxphotography.comJUST DESSERTS
We’d love a dessert table at our summer wedding, but would like it to have a cohesive look, is this possible with such a variety of treats on offer?
Display your main wedding cake, whether it be a single tier or a five-tier creation, on a dessert table and offer your guests a selection of sweet treats that complement your wedding cake. Choose from cupcakes, mini cupcakes, macaroons, cake pops, cakesicles, decorated biscuits, baked donuts, meringue kisses, mini pots and iced mini cakes.
Lisa Broughton, Wedding Cakes by Lisa Broughton www.weddingcakesbylisabroughton.co.ukYour Surrey Wedding says: To ensure a cohesive look across the desert table you could have complementing flavours running across all the treats, as well as a colour scheme to bring the whole table together. If you have a marble pattern on the wedding cake, how about using this on the iced biscuits and cakesicles too?
MUM’S THE WORD
I’d love to treat my mum to having her hair and makeup professionally done, but she’s self-concious while going through the menopuase due to her hair and skin changes. How can you work with her to make her feel her absolute best?
If you have booked a professional hair and make-up artist for yourself and the wedding party, they should have no trouble dealing with the mother-of the-bride/ groom too. The best option is to let her have a trial run, which I offer all my brides’ mums.
There is a knack to doing make-up on mature skin think: lifting and not too much sparkle/glitter, not too much powder and don’t forget to colour those lips!
Try to have an adult hairstyle as well, a nice blow dry or chic up do is much classier than ringlets hanging around your shoulders. Linda Leonard, Linda Leonard Hair and Make-up https://lindaleonardhairandmakeup.uk
GET THE LOOK
I’m not sure I can get all the bridesmaids together before the big day for us all to have a trial with the hair and make-up artist. How do I make sure the chosen hair and make-up will suit everyone?
One question you may be left asking yourself is, do all of your bridesmaids need to have the same look on the day? The answer is not necessarily.
The looks do not need to be identical, let’s face it, hair thickness, length and texture will vary as do skin tones and undertones, but they could have something that blends the looks together such as a pretty hairclip, comb or a braid, if the hair is long enough, and perhaps a nice nude lip to tie in with their dress colour. Charlotte Tilbury’s iconic Pillow Talk lipstick now comes in three different nude tones to suite all.
Don’t over think it though, these days anything goes, there are no rules!

RING THE CHANGES
With so many different materials available for our wedding bands, how do we know the difference and benefits between them all to make the right choice for our wedding day?
Since the bride’s wedding ring metal should be the same as her engagement ring metal, choosing a wedding ring can sometimes be easier than expected for the bride! However, the groom has a little bit more to choose from, the most popular wedding ring metals are:
9ct or 18ct white gold
White gold is a modern twist on traditional yellow gold. It’s made up of lighter alloys and is plated in rhodium, which it what gives it its bright ‘white’ and chrome-like shine. It is chosen as a cheaper alternative to platinum or palladium, but it does need plating every couple of years or so (depending on the wearer).
9ct or 18ct gold
A shiny, bright yellow metal that symbolises the light of the sun. Also known as yellow gold, this metal is very traditional. 18ct gold costs more than 9ct because it contains double the amount of pure gold.
9ct rose gold
Rose gold was popular for lavish jewellery pieces in the 1920s, and this blush metal is coming back in fashion. Rose gold looks beautiful on those who have olive skin because of the pink, rosy tones and it matches other rose gold and yellow gold jewellery pieces very well.
Platinum
Arguably one of the most luxury wedding ring metals, platinum is a very sought-after, strong and precious metal. It has anti-tarnish properties so it keeps its beautiful bright shine without needing to be replated (unlike white gold).
Palladium
Palladium is a strong, light and durable metal and is often chosen for its hypo-allergenic properties. Part of the platinum family but a cheaper alternative, it is a more precious than gold or titanium.
Titanium
Discovered in Cornwall in the 18th century, titanium has a slight natural grey colour to it. It’s a wedding ring option if you want something that’s light, strong and hard wearing.
Titanium is a lot cheaper than other metals like palladium and platinum, so works well if you’re on a budget. If you do a lot of hands-on tasks or work in a manual labour environment, then it could be the ideal wedding ring for you!
Tip: When choosing the ring metal keep your lifestyle in mind. If you work with your hands, then a stronger metal like titanium, palladium or platinum might be best for you.

AFFAIR A grand
Louise Prance experienced the ultimate luxury combined with traditional Greek appeal at Rhodes-based Ixian Grand & All Suites
Approaching Rhodes by air, you’d be forgiven for missing a bird’s-eye view of the Ixian Grand & All Suites thanks to the beauty of Greece’s largest island, but for the eagle-eyed travellers you can spot the hotel due to its inimitable layout and luxurious beachfront private pool suites nestled luxuriously on the beach of Ixia Bay, just metres away from the sea.
Ixian Grand & All Suites is only 7km away from Rhodes town and the Medieval City of Rhodes, as well as being a mere 10-minute drive from Filerimos, one of the three ancient cities of Rhodes.
Overlooking the Ixia Bay and Aegean Sea, this hotel has the beauty of being adult-only, so is the ideal destination for a honeymoon offering total relaxation.
LUXE APPEAL
With 124 deluxe guestrooms with garden or sea view, the garden complex offers accommodation in 122 spacious and comfortable guestrooms, while the suites area is comprised of five buildings with 102 rooms and suites.
While all rooms offer a level of luxury only befitting a resort of this calibre, the aforementioned beachfront private pool suites are without doubt the way to go if you’re looking for a once-ina-lifetime experience, and I can attest you will wake up every morning to pinch-me-moments looking out over your private infinity pool to the crystal clear Aegean sea that stretches as far as
the eye can see. Looking for further wow factor? Enjoy a romantic soak in the bath and appreciate the floor-to-ceiling windows while watching the sun set over the ocean.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Talking romance, no honeymoon is complete without a romantic meal or five, and the Ixian Grand & All Suites has romantic eateries down to a fine art. Vis-à-Vis, the hotel’s main buffet restaurant, focuses mostly on the Mediterranean diet and the Greek cuisine, but also international food.
Milonges, is an open-air restaurant offers traditional Greek cuisine and is located by the main swimming pool, serving lunch and dinner, while Muza Htista offers Japanese and Peruvian cultures. My personal favourite was the Alazonia Suites Restaurant – while only available to those staying in suites, this stylish restaurant serves breakfast and dinner, with outdoor or indoor seating options.
Evenings were spent embracing the laidback Greek culture and indulging in a tipple or three at Truman’s Lobby Bar, which has a stunning terrace with views to the gardens, pools and the sea.
AND RELAX…
If you’re able to drag yourself away from the room, the pools and the idyllic scenery, then it’s almost a perquisite to try out the hotel’s spa, and Ixian Grand & All Suites offers one of the most tranquil I’ve had the pleasure of attending.
Offering massages, facials and beauty therapies, the spa also has an indoor pool and a Turkish bath, as well as a complimentary gym with a fitness instructor offering various daily classes – if you’re so inclined. I opted for a more relaxing pastime instead, and indulged in a full body
massage. An hour of total bliss, I emerged feeling even more relaxed, if that’s at all possible.
SIGHT SEEING
While it may be unimaginable why you’d want to leave the hotel’s complex, it would be remiss to visit a Greek island and not explore the locality and embrace the culture. We opted for a day trip to the Medieval Rhodes Old Town.
With walls four kilometres long, the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and dates back more than 2000 years. With a breathtaking history, the site features Medieval buildings, mosques, traditional fountains, oriental motifs, Byzantine and Gothic churches, shops, a market and restaurants aplenty.
We whiled away hours mooching inbetween the castle walls, picking up classic Greek souvenirs before sampling traditional Greek food – and of course wine. What could be better than enjoying a sun-drenched glass of white while looking at white-washed buildings before heading back for sundowners at the hotel?
No honeymoon would be complete without getting out on the water, and activities abound in Rhodes. From SUP fun, to romantic boat rides, to kayak tours. Tick the aqua box and your romantic Greek getaway would be really complete.
A SPA DAY Santa needs
Located on the banks of the picture-perfect River Thames in Surrey, just 10 minutes from Windsor, The
on Thames is a modern fourstar hotel with an award-winning spa offering.
Now, I’ve been lucky enough to stay at The Runnymede once before, although the warm summer’s day certainly wasn’t comparable to the wintry, grey November day I found myself in when visiting a second time. I wondered; did it alter my view having been before? Could I honestly find enough about it to tell all my lovely readers about an authentic experience – well, read on, because you’ll hear why it was second time’s a charm for me!
As previously mentioned, the ominous grey skies of this winter’s day (and the M25 car park), hadn’t set me up for the most relaxed of mindsets to start my night away at The Runnymede. Arriving at the hotel, I was a tad deflated to say the least. However, no sooner had I trudged my way through the hotel’s revolving front doors was I warmed to the bones with a cosy ambience exuding from the lounge and lobby area. A true winter-warmer, there was a huge log fire keeping everyone toasty, Christmas trees and decorations glistening in abundance, low lighting complementing the hum of people relaxing and chatting away – I was instantly enthralled.
The modern aesthetic of the hotel has been sympathetically considered so that style never surpasses comfort. The large sofas and seating areas are all strategically placed to provide snug yet social spaces to catch up with loved ones or enjoy as a romantic twosome. Attentive waiters attend to your needs immediately; it wasn’t long before I was relaxing on a plush sofa next to the log fire, looking out at the river – still picturesque even in the winter – with a cocktail in hand. My morning was forgotten, a distant memory, although I think the cocktail helped with that too!
Our spacious River View suite was more than enough for two people on a much-needed night away. Armchairs and a table perfectly poised to watch the river run by, an enormous bed offered a perfect night’s sleep, and the bathroom was a suite in itself: two sinks and mirrors, walk-in shower and bath – it was like your very own beauty parlour! I could have easily whiled away an hour or two in our suite, but I swiftly changed into my robe, grabbed my book and headed down to the spa.
The spa is accessible from the main hotel, with its own entrance and reception area it feels like a luxurious members-only retreat. Whether you want to get the endorphins going in the fitness centre – which boasts river views – or while away the time in the swimming pool or Jacuzzi it’s got something for everyone. There are also adult-only times for the facilities which is perfect for minimooners.
After reading a few chapters in my book while enjoying a fruit
tea in the spa’s lounge area, I was greeted by a therapist to take me for my complimentary treatment an ESPA Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage.
Now, I’m a bit of a tough nut to crack, not just because I’m knotted up like a coil, but I also find it hard to practice mindfulness and enjoy the experience. I’m also out of my comfort-zone sat there in only a towel – I even hide in the bathroom at home! My therapist Claire was amazing, putting me at ease, she was incredibly knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions I had; it speaks volumes that I was able to nearly doze off! I also felt the knots in my back disperse for the first time, I knew I’d had a thoroughly wonderful and beneficial massage. The Runnymede is perfect for a spot of pre- or post-wedding pampering, treatments include manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing and a variety of massages as well as half-day and full-day spa experiences.
When staying in hotels, I’m always keen to book into the restaurants rather than venture out. Both dinner and breakfast were served in Leftbank, the hotel’s renowned buffet restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the river. At night, the dark winter evening was interspersed with intimate lighting, and the hotel’s festive décor really came in to its own with an extra splattering of fairylights and shimmering tones. The food was insatiable, for even the most discerning of critic who may shy away from the word ‘buffet’ but this is not an average offering!
With all kinds of culinary delights from delicious antipasti boards and salads to a variety of meat and fish options there’s something for everyone for starters, mains and desserts. As it was a Sunday we delved in to a hearty roast dinner (which was also on offer) and, not that I really had room for dessert but they certainly went down a treat – I tried three of the delicacies on offer! The open kitchen, wood-fired oven and rotisserie also provide a visual extravaganza too, cooking right before your eyes. Breakfast the next day didn’t disappoint either. Due to the light flooding in, the Leftbank feels bright and airy in the mornings, energising you for the day ahead. Again, there was possibly too much choice of fare from continental to hot cooked options, sweet and savoury, healthy fruits and muesli. There was not one fault in the dining experience on offer here.
After a final coffee, gazing at the river, we were thinking about our day ahead in Windsor complete with a visit to the castle to see the Christmas decorations! Alas, it was time to say goodbye. I couldn’t quite believe the whirlwind 24-hours I had here and that was all down to the wonderful experience The Runnymede had given me. From the surroundings to the staff, the wellbeing ethos to the mouth-watering food, I was looked after, rejuvenated and ready for the world again. Thank you!
