One of my favourite parts of my job as Editor of Your Yorkshire Wedding is getting to write readers’ stories, as it means I get to look through all of our couples’ photos. Nosey? Of course – who doesn’t love looking at details and inspiration? However, it’s that moment the photographer captures your soon-to-be spouse seeing you walk up the aisle that gets me. Every single time. That raw emotion upon seeing the person you love most in the whole wide world as they’re about to become your husband or wife is a powerful thing – so huge congratulations; as you’re about to experience that incredible feeling for yourself!

Plus, turn to page 13 to win a distillery experience for you and three besties (with lots of sampling), worth £200! I’ll drink to that!

YOU BEAUTY!

Having just opened in April, Beauty in Bloom is an ecohair and beauty salon based in Ilkley. Owned by Charlotte Hawkins, her specialist team of hair stylists and make-up artists continue to make a name for themselves as the bridal hair and make-up people in and around Yorkshire. Aside from over 20 years of experience, their passion for perfection is unrivalled –put simply, they’re the team you want on the morning of your wedding!

“When we say ‘yes’ to a wedding we never dream of just sitting and waiting until it’s our moment to make up our brides,” says Charlotte. “We’re on hand to straighten trains, make brews, pop shoes on and everything in between!

Because, when it’s your special day, these little gestures make all the difference, and make for a seamless day!”

For more info, and to find out what bridal services the salon offers, visit https://beautyinbloom.co.uk/weddings.

YOU’RE HIRED!

Former candidate on this year’s The Apprentice, Shannon Martin has launched her British-led bridal collection, Nori Ivy, which she originally pitched to Lord Sugar.

“While I was grateful for the opportunity to be on the show, I left in week two when I discovered the process wasn’t for me,” she says. “I realised I didn’t need a business partner to make Nori Ivy a success, as I could do it on my own, alongside my amazing team!”

Shannon already has two thriving Yorkshire businesses, Dotty Bridal and OffThe-Peg Bridal Outlet, and has been part of the wedding industry for over 10 years. The Nori Ivy collection of 14 gowns is available in sizes 0-30, and features stunning silhouettes, a variety of textures, exquisite fabrics and intricate detailing; all of which are customisable to any bride’s requirements.

Wed like an Egyptian

Ella and Karim’s day included Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs – and a surprise belly dancer!

Images courtesy of Kirsty Mattsson Photography

Ella and Karim met at Bradford Royal Infirmary, but didn’t confess to liking each other until a year later. “By now we were working in Huddersfield, with Karim regularly waiting outside the ward I was in for me to finish,” says Ella. “I initially thought of him as just a friend, but it was only when I couldn’t get Karim off my mind that I realised much stronger feelings were involved.”

Doctors

Karim proposed on 19 April, 2019, on a last-minute break to Gran Canaria. “I was hoping he’d pop the question while we were away, as I knew he’d asked my dad’s permission to marry me a couple of months earlier,” continues the bride. “I wasn’t disappointed, with Karim taking me to a heart-shaped island called Anfi for the evening, proposing on the jetty at sunset. It was all very romantic.”

The couple set the date of 17 March, 2022, marrying at Wharfedale Grange. Here, Ella tells us more about their big day…

27 REAL WEDDINGS

Wharfedale Grange is a stunning venue and we instantly knew it was the one. Everywhere you look you find a quirky unique feature you won’t have seen anywhere else.

Karim is Egyptian, so our theme centered around the country. Tables were named after Ancient Pharaohs, and we had miniature statues of each on the table, bought from Egypt’s markets.

We wanted a natural and wild but vibrant coloured look for our flowers. Our florist fitted our style perfectly, using sustainable products and making some incredible creations.

My sister made our delicious cake, sitting down with us to design exactly what we wanted. It even included our names in Arabic painted on the front.

Even though we married at the same venue as our reception, my dad wanted a traditional father/daughter journey, so we hired a 1949 Cadillac for before and after the ceremony.

I found my Essence of Australia dress at Silsden’s Ava Rose Hamilton. I knew I wanted an A-line design, but never thought I’d fall in love with such a simple gown! I added sparkle with a jewelled belt and plenty of lace with my amazing veil.

28

Karim wore a Hugo Boss suit which we picked out together. Comprising a velvet jacket with bow tie, he teamed it with a white and peach buttonhole to complement my bouquet.

My bridesmaids and bridesman wore the same cornflower blue, but in a style of their choosing. We found the bridesman’s suit first and then sourced the dresses to match.

Our nine-month-old son was looked after by a professional nanny for the day. It meant none of our family or friends missed part of our wedding and his routine wasn’t disrupted. He wore blue chinos with bow tie and braces and stole the show!

After canapés guests were served sharing mezze platters with flatbreads, falafel, and dips. We then enjoyed slow cooked beef and sticky toffee pudding; and had chicken or falafel shawarma and Egyptian desert Om Ali in the evening.

We put a traditional red Egyptian Fez on each table for the guests to have fun with. Karim’s mum and I also made two extra ones for the top table covered in red rhinestones!

We were both nervous about our first dance to Tom Walker’s Just You and I, but once it began there was no one else in the room but us. We had a confetti cannon during the dance, too, which gave us some extra jazz!

29 REAL WEDDINGS

We hired a belly dancer as a surprise for our guests to perform in the evening. This is very much an Egyptian tradition – and she was fantastic!

We also had a magician and live band for entertainment, as well as a photobooth with props. Our guests got one picture to keep and one to stick in our guest book with a message.

After meeting at school love blossomed for Alison and Roman Images courtesy of Terri Pashley

32

Alison and Roman met at secondary school. “We knew of each other, but it wasn’t until we left school that we got to know each other properly through parties and mutual friends,” says the bride. “It wasn’t a romantic story with lots of flowers and dates – we were young, clicked and fell in love!”

Roman proposed on the couple’s 10 year anniversary. “We were meant to be in Italy celebrating, but Covid hit so he popped the question during lockdown,” continues the bride. “I’d made Roman a memory book with photographs of different times throughout our relationship as a gift, and jokingly wrote on the last page, ‘What will be next for us?’. I’d of course written it as a not-so-subtle hint, but was shocked when he got to the last page and got down on one knee, producing a ring from his pocket!”

The couple set the date for the 28th May, 2022, choosing Bunny Hill Weddings for their big day. Here, Alison tells us more about their amazing celebration…

THE PERFECT PLACE

Choosing a venue was one of the easiest options for the couple. “I had stumbled across Bunny Hill Weddings on Instagram a year or so before we got engaged and fell in love with it just from the pictures,” says Alison. “I followed their account and always thought how amazing it would be to get married there ome day. After we got engaged I made sure to book a viewing as soon as was possible – and it didn’t disappoint. It was everything we had ever dreamt of and more, with private grounds and stunning scenery. We also loved how the owners had thought of every single detail – it even has a zip line on site! We had other viewings booked at alternative venues, but as soon as we left and got in the car, Roman turned to me and said, ‘This has got to be where we get married!’”

PIC ’N’ MIX

When it came to organising the little touches, Alison and Roman had plenty of ideas to hand. “Our gorgeous wooden table place names were made by a close friend of ours,” continues Alison. “Our florist was in charge of designing our centrepieces, with half the tables featuring tall gold stands with flower arrangements on, plus floating candles, tealights and petals around the base. The other half featured floating candles in glass cylinders and stemmed glass at different heights with tealights and petals. They looked incredible!”

For favours, the couple decided to go for something to really get people talking. “We opted for little ‘roulette’ shot bottles for each guest, with either a clear spirit or water!” continues Alison. “After Roman finished his speech, he asked everyone to take a drink from their bottles – and their faces instantly gave away what drink they had!”

33 REAL WEDDINGS

FIRST TIME LUCKY

Alison found dress-shopping a breeze, as it was the first gown she tried on! “I’m normally quite a minimalistic person when it comes to dresses, so my Zavana Couture Amira Gown was a little out of character for me! I teamed it with a long, plain veil, as it was stunning enough without additional accessories.”

The rest of the bridal party also looked the part, starting with the couple’s daughter. “The team in Chloe Jane Bridalwear; where I bought my dress, provided me with material in the same style as my gown, so I could have a flower girl outfit made for her,” continues the bride. “I found an amazing dressmaker on social media, and she matched us perfectly. My bridesmaids looked just as gorgeous in their sage green dresses, while Roman and his groomsmen wore tuxedos – including the kids!”

LET’S EAT

Food-wise, Alison and Roman were keen to keep their guests wellcatered for. “Bunny Hill Weddings use an amazing company that let you choose whatever you want,” says Alison. “For canapés, we enjoyed mini Yorkshire puddings with beef and gravy, chicken burgers and sliders, and mini pies with steak and pea purée. They even added a tiny steiner of real ale to this! We then had Italian antipasti platters, roast meat boards and

chocolate brownies for our wedding breakfast; with loaded fries in the evening. Our guests still say now how much they loved the food.”

For their wedding cake, the couple kept things simple. “We wanted a minimalistic design so chose a plain white three-tier style, decorated with flowers from our florist. After sampling a lot of lovely cake, we decided on white chocolate, chocolate and lemon and poppy seed flavours.”

ZIP TO IT

Entertainment-wise, the couple took full advantage of the venue’s own facilities. “A lot of our guests – including myself! – were on the zip line throughout the day and night, which was brilliant fun,” continues the bride. “We also hired singing waiters who performed after the main course. They got everybody up standing on their chairs, waving napkins in the air, and the party continued after that! The DJ then started and the dance floor was always full, which was how we wanted it to be.”

Looking back, there were many memorable moments the couple will cherish forever. “Getting ready was a lovely part of the day, as it was filled with anticipation and excitement,” remembers Alison. “Our best friends were in charge of the speeches, and they really did us proud; both packed with laughter and emotion. Our photographer, Terri, was also amazing, keeping us relaxed and capturing so many incredible shots.”

YOU AND ME,always

Emma and Kieran’s wedding was spectacular from start to finish

Images courtesy of Peter Rollings Photography

Emma and Kieran met through Facebook when Kieran clicked ‘add friend’ after spotting Emma’s profile. “We were attracted to one another instantly and enjoyed spending time together over the next few months,” says Emma. “It was as if we’d known each other for a lot longer than we actually had, and everything felt ‘just right’. We even began to think our paths had crossed in the past and we hadn’t realised.”

Kieran proposed to Emma on holiday in Mexico. “Kieran had already found the perfect ring with the help of my mum, and planned to pop the question on a swing in the sea for that picture-perfect moment,” continues the bride. “However, as we got to the swing a huge tractor appeared out of nowhere and stopped close by! Instead, Kieran asked me to marry him later that night overlooking a waterfall in an incredible restaurant. It’s a moment neither of us will ever forget.”

The couple chose the 22nd April, 2022 for their celebration, marrying at Goldsborough Hall. Here, Emma tells us more about their big day…

39 REAL WEDDINGS

How can you not be attracted to Goldsborough Hall? It’s a beautiful stately home with wonderful surroundings, and I felt like a Princess for the day.

We chose chocolate hearts for favours, presented in a white organza bag with personalised label thanking our guests for celebrating with us.

My cake was perfect; a three-tier stack of lemon, chocolate and Victoria sponge. White in decoration, it also had crystal sparkles on the top and bottom tier.

Kieran and his groomsmen looked amazing in their royal blue threepiece suits with blush pink tie and handkerchief.

Our table plan and table names were designed to match our invites; ivory pearlescent card with Champagne gold glitter border and blush pink satin bow.

I knew I wanted lots of roses and big white blooms when it came to our flowers. My florist nailed it with Playa Blanca roses, hydrangeas, ranunculi and French ruscus.

I wore an ivory Martin Thornburg Regal Sequin Ball Gown, adding draped sleeves with sequin and jewels, as well as removing buttons from the train and a sequin layer to the skirt of the dress.
40

Musicians played during our guests’ arrival and throughout our drinks. They also played Kieran’s entrance song, my mum’s entrance song, and my own.

I requested that the dancefloor was never empty – and thanks to our DJ it never was, with him entertaining our guests with the perfect mix.

I asked both my grandad and stepdad to walk me down the aisle, and it was such a special moment to have with both of them. My grandad walked me to my stepdad, then my stepdad gave me away.

My bridesmaids wore A-line blush pink dresses, and my bridesman chose a blue suit with pink tie.

We surprised our guests with a mother of the bride dance. My mum’s a huge Take That fan, so we danced to Greatest Day – and my bridesman dressed up as Gary Barlow!

The best man was very kind to Kieran during his speech, but saved a video of me on the karaoke from a night out and played the video! It was a tad embarrassing, but got everyone laughing.

A LOVE LETTER TO YOUR SKIN

I recently attended a masterclass with Super Facialist’s resident skincare expert, Charlotte Connoley, which posed the question: do we really know our skin type? If like me your answer is somewhat hesitant, it may interest you to know that there’s an easy way to find out. Charlotte suggests simply splashing your face with water and leaving it for 20-25 minutes. If it feels prickly afterwards, you have sensitive skin; if the water’s gone, then it’s dry; if the skin is tight, it’s dehydrated; and if it feels perfectly comfortable you’re blessed with a normal skin type. Whatever you discover, Super Facialist has a range of products specifically tailored to each type, recognising this can change throughout the year. This allows you to affordably create your own individual skincare routine to support your skin throughout the seasons.

Having learned that my skin is dehydrated, I tried the divine Rosehip Hydrate Calming Creamy Cleanser (£9, www.lookfantastic.com) and my annoying dry patches have been banished!

Q&A

Our two experts answer your hair and beauty dilemmas

GLAMOUR GIRL

I’ve decided on a second dress for the evening so I can dance the night away. How can I transform my hair and make-up into a party look?

What a great idea! First of all, make sure you have powder foundation to hand to get rid of any shine, and to add some extra coverage after you’ve been greeting guests all day. A red lip is perfect for a day-to-night transformation, but if you’re worried about having to reapply it constantly invest in a decent lip stain instead. When teamed with tinted lip balm on top, it’ll give you a hydrated, glossy look – without your hair getting stuck to the stickiness of a lipgloss once you let your hair down to properly party!

Finally, why not consider adding some shimmery powder highlight onto your cheekbones as well as your shoulders and collarbones for a little extra glam, even using some on the centre of your eyelids to bring out the colour of your eyes? It’s a fool proof way to go from classic chic to party mode, before you go back to the dancefloor and boogie to your heart’s content!

THE ONLY WAY IS UP

I’d like my long hair up for my wedding but am unsure about it looking too structured. What do you suggest?

I get a little nervous when brides with long locks ask for their hair to be up, as it can be such a dramatic change. I usually suggest that they should still retain a feeling of length. One way to do this is by creating what I call a party pony –a fun, full ponytail with lots of texture and volume. It could be as structured as a Hollywood wave or a relaxed boho creation, and is formal enough for the most refined ceremony, but also dance-floor ready.

Gone are the days of the ‘messy bun’, with even the most relaxed styles wanting a feeling of smoothness, without feeling scraped back. Enter the timeless relaxed updo with lots of trailing tendrils around the face. I love integrating lots of loose twists that I can then pull out a bit for more fullness, so it feels luxurious and refined while at the same time effortless and chic.

Those in-the-know solve your wedding dilemmas

MUSIC TO MY EARS

How do we know what kind of live act to book for our big day? Should it be something we love – or think of our family and friends’ wants and needs?

Whichever kind of live act you’re both thinking of booking, be it a solo musician or band, it should absolutely be something that’s special to you both. Chances are that if you both love it, your family and friends will too anyway! I get booked for anything from the ceremony on its own, which adds to the romance as well as making it unique and special to you both; to the full day’s entertainment, which is great for continuity. I get to build a rapport with everyone, and the day flows so much easier. Plus I can also adapt to any setting, meaning my couples get to relive their day over and over again.

Remember: your big day will go so quickly and it’s so easy to get caught up in the details while you’re trying to make everyone else happy. Of course, make it enjoyable for them, too, but try to remember that it’s your wedding day, and they’re just invited!

UP FOR RENEWAL

My husband and I want to renew our vows. How can a celebrant help – and what should we expect?

What a wonderful celebration and affirmation of your love! Your chosen celebrant will bring engagement, humour and sensitivity, created after a chat about your history, your family and your hopes for the content of your vow renewal. I can include readings; a symbolic element such as lighting a unity candle; your most important vows, exchanging of rings and your choice of music. Long, short, lavish or intimate, your ceremony will be all about who you are as individuals and a couple. With my service you will be the most important people of the day, as I will only book one service per day. I’ll also make sure I arrive an hour before your renewal starts, ensuring all guests are greeted, so they feel relaxed and at home by the time you arrive. All in all, a good celebrant will elevate and infuse your day with sparkle to create treasured memories for you and your guests, just as it should be.

www.samchipmanphotography.com https://samanthahook.co.uk 73 ASK THE EXPERTS

FEELING FESTIVE

We’re looking for a venue for our Christmas-themed wedding. What should we ask before booking?

First of all, ask how many weddings a venue conducts around Christmas time, as you ideally want to be their main focus and choose one which limits weddings at this time. Ideally, you should ask for any images the venue has of previous Christmas weddings, so you know what to expect. It would also be useful to know the extent of a venue’s grounds for festive photographs and what contingencies there are in place for ‘indoor’ shots. Once you know the extent of the venue’s Christmas style, you need to check if they’ll allow you to add any extras for yourselves, such as the addition of presents under the tree, extra decorations in a style of your own choosing, or whether they mind a visit from Santa himself! Another point would be to determine whether the venue is prepared to cater for a full Christmas wedding breakfast to include all the trimmings, if that’s what you’re looking for. Finally, as the day draws to a close, it would be useful to know if the venue is happy to host a carol concert, play festive tunes, allow party games or host anything in particular you have in mind. Most venues are always happy to do what you want, but it is always best to check.

WEDDING WORRIES

I’m concerned about the thought of finding my dream dress, to the point it’s making me anxious. How can I make the process as stressfree as can be?

When you go to any bridal boutique, especially for the first time, you’re bound to feel daunted. You may try on a number of gowns and wonder if you will ever experience the feeling of knowing a dress is ‘the one’. The answer is, not all brides do get that feeling! The majority do, and there may be tears, but you will know when you feel special in a gown and it ticks all the right boxes. Don’t feel pressured, not everybody is the same! Instead, go into the experience with a positive outlook, and don’t be swayed by others. Your dress is your dress and if you feel incredible in it then that is what matters. You should come out of your appointment feeling happy and relaxed and if you haven’t said ‘yes to the dress’, don’t panic! You have a better idea of what it is you want – and you will find it, I promise!

The experts at WatchPilot advise on how to choose the perfect watch for your big day

Awatch should complement a groom’s suit, however it should also be a timepiece that they will want to wear for years to come. Co-founder of WatchPilot.com, Tim Harrison, has shared with County Wedding Magazines’ grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, his expert advice on buying and investing in a timepiece for your big day...

What type of watches are available for grooms-to-be?

The most common watches are quartz, which offer accurate timing with minimal maintenance. Quartz watches also have the most affordable watch movements.

Then there are automatic watches which selfwind using kinetic energy. These store energy by using the movement of your wrist but are typically more expensive than quartz options.

Mechanical watches function via an intricate series of tiny components working together to power the watch. These never need batteries because they require hand-winding to operate. They are super reliable and often very attractive to look at but they do come with a higher price tag than other timepieces.

The final type is the solar watch, which has the ability to convert light energy into electrical energy; they do not require battery replacements and feature a quartz crystal movement for accurate timekeeping.

What are the latest watch trends?

Watches mean so much more than just telling the time; they represent every second of our lives. Some of the most recent style trends include vintage watches with nostalgic elements such as thin cases, minimalistic dials and those with beautiful heritage.

Smart watches are continuing to be a big

trend as people are increasingly investing more in their health and wellbeing, and these timepieces are the best for staying in tune with your body while you meet your fitness goals.

There has also been a huge increase in using bold colours in both jewellery and watches. Blue, green and other pastel colours have been particularly utilised by many brands, producing a variety of new lines and limitededition pieces.

How can grooms-to-be add a personal touch to their wristwear?

A wedding is a great opportunity to add a sentimental item or two to your wardrobe. Potentially borrow a watch from a family member or someone very close to you. If you are wearing a new watch, consider having it engraved to provide a memory of your special day – this could be a date, initials or a quote.

Appearance is one of the largest factors for grooms when choosing what to wear on their big day, with this in mind, what are your tips for grooms-to-be when selecting a watch to complement their suit?

The most common watch worn with a suit is the dress watch. Consider a simple design with no flourishes. A plain black leather strap and simple dial is understated and refined.

When gifting a watch to a groom, what details should be considered?

Opt for a classic and elegant design. Much like an engagement ring, the watch should stand out, however not be too extravagant. Consider taste and style preferences for example, if he’s sporty look for a classic chronograph.

If you know what colour metal the groom prefers to wear as part of his wardrobe i.e. on belt buckles or cufflinks, then this could be a hint for the colour of watch they may like.

Lastly stay within your budget! Don’t forget that weddings can cost quite a bit of money, so set yourself a price limit and work within it.

How do you suggest cleaning and maintaining a watch?

Whether you wear it every day or just for special occasions, it’s important to make time to give your watch a bit of TLC with a regular clean. This not only keeps it looking good, but it’s also essential for making sure it works well,

keeps time effectively over a long period as well as for general hygiene.

How often you should clean your watch varies. If you wear your watch every day, then a thorough clean, once a month, should keep it free of dirt and grime. If you’re more of an occasional wearer, then a six-monthly deep clean is recommended.

The first step is to take a look at the manual that came with your watch. This should give you a good idea of what you can and can’t do during the cleaning process. Next, you’ll need the proper equipment. A few essential items that will help you give your watch a thorough clean include a microfibre cloth, cleaning fluid, brushes, a watch strap remover tool and a Cape Cod polishing cloth.

If your watch strap is made from leather, fabric or silicone, you’ll need to remove it before you can start cleaning. You’ll also need to push or screw in all the crowns (the winders) and buttons to prevent water or moisture from damaging the internal workings of your watch.

There are some parts of your watch, like the crown and buttons, that might be too small to effectively clean with your cloth, and this is where your cleaning brushes come in. They’re perfect for getting into all the nooks and crannies, including the crown, buttons and inside the lugs. Always spray the cleaning fluid onto the tip of each brush, not the watch itself, and use a dry part of your microfibre cloth to remove any excess.

Now it’s time to buff or polish your watch using your Cape Cod polishing cloth. Not only will this remove any streaks and brighten up the surface of your watch, but it’s also a great way to buff out any fine scratches or blemishes.

HONEYMOON NEWS 81

OF LOVEThe city

Aftera speedy trip on the Eurostar and a leisurely stroll, we arrived at the Shangri-La Paris. With all that Paris has to offer, the actual accommodation you find yourself using can often feel like an afterthought. However, with the history and majesty of the Shangri-La Paris, the hotel is as much a tourist destination as the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe or even the Eiffel Tower. A former home of Prince Roland Bonaparte, overlooking the River Seine, the hotel is centrally located in the 16th arrondissement and seamlessly blends European grandeur with traditional Asian hospitality.

FIT FOR ROYALTY

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a welcoming member of the hotel concierge who checked in our bags while we were given a guided tour. The building is a stunning feat of architecture and the location alone is enough to take your breath away. The hotel has plenty of stand-out features (too many to mention), but the impressive marble-lined swimming pool converted from the former stables, the relaxing spa, state-of-the-art health club and stunning entrance hall are all must-sees.

If you want to relax with a drink in your hand, then you’ll feel right at home in the stunningly decorated Le Bar Botaniste or Les Lounges, both of which offer a friendly and impressive service.

SUITE DREAMS

Catching our breath for a moment, we were shown to our suite. In all honesty, the view of the Eiffel Tower a few hundred feet away, in plain sight of our room, made it very hard to focus on the suite itself for a good few minutes! But after wiping the stardust from our eyes, we discovered that we had been treated to a magnificent space. The biggest bed I’d ever seen, a walk-in wardrobe and a lavish bathroom greeted us; with every aspect of the room designed around that view. The attention to detail was beyond anything I could have imagined with every amenity you could possibly need at your fingertips.

One of my favourite aspects was the balcony, which showed the tower in all its splendour and views of the city at every turn. Sitting there with a cup of tea and homemade macarons was one of the highlights of the trip, and I opted to be out on the balcony every spare moment I had.

EAST MEETS WEST

There are two restaurants at Shangri-La Paris, both of which are beautifully decorated with stand-out food. Shang Palace, where I had the pleasure of dining, is France’s only Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant and what a treat it was! Inspired by Southeast China’s culinary traditions, the restaurant offers authentic Chinese cuisine by chef Samuel Lee.

With so much choice, we were a little lost for words, but thankfully the charming hostess was very helpful and suggested options that she felt we would enjoy.

Every dish was incredible and the food complemented the surroundings perfectly. We started with the chef’s special sashimi; immaculately prepared, it set the standard for what was to follow. The lobster dumplings were a particular favourite of mine and is something I’d eat every day if possible. After several dishes, it was safe to say I was stuffed, but when the dessert arrived, I couldn’t help myself; the rice balls with mixed fruits and whipped cream was delicious and one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime meal, then this is it. It’s been months since we visited, but we still talk about how delicious everything was.

TRUE ROMANCE

With such awe-inspiring surroundings, we couldn’t resist a short stroll over to the Trocadéro and across the Seine to the Eiffel Tower. As beautiful a sight at night as during the day, we couldn’t believe our fortune.

When we eventually headed back to the hotel, we wearily made our way up to our bedroom. The suite had an impressive TV, but it almost felt like a redundancy next to the view from the windows. I’m typically a blackout sleeper, but on this occasion, I had to sleep with the curtains wide open.

After a wonderful night’s sleep, we ordered breakfast to our room and enjoyed it out on our balcony terrace. Barely noticing the brisk February weather, we dined in what felt like the historic heart of Paris. Breakfast was up to the high standards we’d come to expect from the Shangri-La Paris, and when it came to checking out, we felt devastated to be leaving. I can say with absolute certainty that we left with our chi restored and look forward to returning in the near future!

Melissa Cullen reveals why Paris is the perfect honeymoon destination
82

For our second evening in Paris, we had the fortune of being hosted by the Hôtel Dame des Arts. Just a stone’s throw from Notre-Dame, it’s located in the Latin Quarte, which is considered the artistic heart of Paris. The hotel boasts terrace rooms looking out to the Eiffel Tower, a spacious and luxurious rooftop bar, and a charming secret garden courtyard – a gem in the centre of a bustling, metropolitan area.

Entering through a sleek, sliding door, we felt like we’d been invited into an ultra-secretive club. The hotel’s lobby, with its dark motif, stylish sofas and low lighting simultaneously blended Art Deco architecture with the feel of a futuristic nightclub. After checking in, we were shown up to our room, which continued the theme exhibited in the lobby. The architectural vision of the hotel is singular, drawing you completely into the world the owners have created.

SLEEK AND SOPHISTICATED

Our room was the natural extension of the hotel; with all the amenities any couple could desire. Every aspect had been well thought out and cleverly made use of the space available. A sliding, frosted-glass door separated the bedroom from the bathroom area, and the use of lighting and sleek, curved panelling made us feel like we were on the set of a high-budget movie. Our room even had a terrace looking out to the Eiffel Tower, bringing us back into the heart of Paris.

DRINK IT ALL IN

After dropping off our bags, we were given a guided tour of the hotel. The beautifully arranged restaurant and bar giving way through an impressive door to a stunning garden space. A mix of comfortable furniture and grounding flora, the tranquillity of the area makes you forget being mere feet away from the busy streets surrounding the hotel – a true feat. Our next stop was the hotel’s gym. The curved, wooden panelling enveloping the walls of the room is really a sight to behold. The final stop of our tour was the building’s rooftop terrace, and I assure you, our guide had saved the best for last. The terrace looks out in every direction across Paris, choosing a seating location is an almost impossible task!

Major sightseer locations such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame and the Panthéon are all visible from the terrace; with stunning pieces of Parisian history everywhere you look. I can imagine sitting at the bar on a summer’s evening watching the sun go down over one of the most beautiful cities in the world being a truly transformative experience.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Once our tour had ended, we made our way down to the restaurant for dinner. Starting with a cocktail in hand, the space had a buzzing atmosphere and was full of people laughing and enjoying the splendour. My hubby and I ordered the corn ribs with magic mayo and cotija cheese as a starter and were impressed by the delicious taste and presentation. After examining the menu and struggling to choose just one dish for our main, we asked our friendly waiter for his recommendations. We chose to share the pork ribs in a Roja and Verde sauce, and when it arrived at our table, we were both incredibly excited for what was to come. Every part was wonderful, and although we were sure we wouldn’t be able to fit any dessert, when we saw the menu, we just had to try the chocolate ganache cake with coffee cream. I’m a big sweet person, so the dessert ticked all of my boxes, and I would happily eat it over and over again if I could!

A FOND FAREWELL

After a busy few days exploring the city, it’s safe to say we were in need of some sleep. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I drifted off and awoke never wanting to leave.

When we eventually motivated ourselves to go downstairs for breakfast, everything looked delicious and we couldn’t decide between the continental or cooked option or which of the vast array of drinks to go for. The food was delicious and when it came to checking out, we felt incredibly sad to be leaving and wished we could re-live the experience all over again. We’ll be heading back to Paris soon, and when we do, we’ll definitely be staying at both of these fabulous hotels again.

Riverside romance

TheMitre Hampton Court could not be placed in a more romantic location; just a five-minute walk from Hampton Court Palace and nestled on the bank of the River Thames. So, when my other half and I whizzed down to the home county of Surrey for a night away around Valentine’s we had high expectations for our stay.

Before checking in, we busied ourselves in The Mute Swan, a pub conveniently placed next door, for a few hours. With the February sun shining down, much stronger than expected, we couldn’t have started our visit in higher spirits. It’s here I left Daniel, basking in the spring weather, while I headed to the Pamper Room, inside Mitre Hampton Court, to experience a life changing massage from the in-house masseuse, Alex.

The combination of soothing music, Alex’s expert touch and delightful spa products from Lola’s Apothecary (www.lolasapothecary.com) meant my hour of tranquillity flew by and I left feeling refreshed and renewed. Whilst my treatment was designed to instil calm and correct energy imbalances, there was a variety of other therapies to alleviate both mind and body. The Stimulating Treatment designed to eliminate toxins and encourage lymph drainage is perfect for those looking to reduce swelling and improve circulation in their bodies.

I found my partner, where I left him, feeling like a new woman, and we checked into our room for the night. The river-facing Royal Rooms are aptly named as they are indeed fit for royalty. Named individually after historic characters who have famously influenced our part of the world, they boast stunning décor, king-sized beds, complimentary toiletries and – the standout feature of any room – a huge free-standing bathtub. These suites truly are a welcoming space for mini-mooners where you can leave your worries at the door.

The interiors throughout this boutique hotel are certainly breathtaking. The old building has all the grandeur of an English country house, but the modern, inner-city inspired furnishings give the place a kitschy charm. The perfectly curated style looks as though it’s jumped straight out of your Pinterest board, and you’ll end your visit with a strong desire to redesign your living room!

After unloading our bags and freshening up – and admittedly indulging in the orange and ginger liqueur gifted to us in our room – we were more than ready for dinner. Our evening meal took place in the

Mitre’s 1665 Riverside Brasserie. With a centrepiece bar, wine room, and gorgeous al fresco terraces perfect for the warmer months, the restaurant is rich in atmosphere.

We were lucky enough to sample a delicious selection from both the seasonal menu and house specials. Starting with a local Berkshire venison tartare and the warming truffle and Jerusalem artichoke soup, this was a wonderful indication of the restaurant’s dedication to combining locally and worldly sourced delights.

Moving on to our mains we were thrilled with both the pan-fried salmon and beetroot risotto, the fish pairing wonderfully with the French Sancerre our waiter was kind enough to recommend us. But the real star of the show from the whole evening was the duck fat chips loaded with Wiltshire truffle hollandaise – seriously naughty and certainly calorific but they tasted so good it doesn’t even bare thinking about.

The wait staff throughout our entire meal were friendly, welcoming and reassuring – making all the difference to our experience. We ended the night toasting to our stay with two – equally delicious as they were splendid looking – espresso martinis.

After dinner, drifting off to the land of nod was easy, and we had a wonderful night’s sleep.

My other half and I both share a great love for breakfast foods and are known to spend all week searching for the best brunch spot for a Sunday morning, so our morning meal the following day was arguably one of the things we were most excited for. It’s no understatement to say we were certainly not disappointed. At the buffet you could find a huge selection of delicious pastries, cereals and fresh fruit that made your mouth water just from the sight of it. The barista-made coffee was the perfect pick-meup to start the day, especially whilst enjoying the famous river-side views.

New from The Mitre team this spring, is The Coppernose café. With more of the superb breakfast, brunch and lunch options in a relaxed environment, it’s perfect to pop in if you’re in the area.

If you’re planning a romantic night away to escape from the stress of wedding planning or looking for the perfect staycation destination for your mini-moon, The Mitre Hampton Court is undoubtedly the place for you. I couldn’t fault my stay and I know it won’t take any convincing at all to get my other half to consider a second trip there.
