REAL WEDDINGS
K
irsty and Ryan’s love story began at a friend’s New Year’s Eve party back in 2010. She says, “Ryan was sat across the table from me and as cheesy as it sounds, I just knew there and then that I wanted to be with him. We instantly clicked and have rarely been apart since that first meeting.” Three years later, Ryan proposed to Kirsty in front of their friends at another New Year’s Eve party. He put the ring in a champagne glass, which Kirsty nearly drank, and got on one knee as midnight hit. She says, “I knew he was going to propose as we’d been ring shopping a few months earlier, but I had no idea when he would be asking and it was a huge surprise.”
SETTING THE SCENE Situated in Lincolnshire, The Dower House Hotel provides couples with an elegant and intimate backdrop to their wedding. With plenty of charm and character, what venue could be better for Kirsty and Ryan’s special day? Kirsty says, “This was the only venue we visited and we fell in love with the romantic and relaxing spaces instantly – especially the outdoor area.” She adds, “Our aim for the wedding was for a fun-filled day with love and laughter, which it certainly had.” The couple added beautiful touches to the reception space; each table featured rose-gold table runners and 80cm silver candelabra with wreaths of flowers and hanging candle lanterns. Gold vinyls were used for place names and guests could find their seats using the large gold mirror decorated with stunning blooms. Each adult was given little jars with strawberry and cream pips for favours while the children had Maltesers. The Dower House created all the food for the wedding breakfast. Kirsty comments, “Everything tasted amazing and left all of our guests in a food coma for a good hour. We chose the ham hock terrine for starter, the roast sirloin of beef for main and the strawberry and lime cheesecake for dessert. The chefs were amazing and catered for guests with dietary requirements.” The venue served the cake created by The Little Cupcakery Horncastle during the evening. The bride says, “We had a hoop stand that had ivy and pink roses, white wisteria and floating glass lanterns – it was my favourite decoration.” The pink and white treat matched the colour scheme and happened to be the couple’s favourite cake ever!

“The day goes so quickly, so take a moment as husband and wife to take everything in. The stress of planning your wedding will be 100 per cent worth the result.” – Kirsty LOOKING THE PART Everyone wants to find that perfect gown that not only reflects their theme but makes them feel their big-day best. Kirsty looked incredible in an Essense of Australia dress from The Ivory Room Bridal Boutique in Woodhall Spa. The tight-fitted dress with a nude underlining and ivory lace overlay featured beautiful details and beaded straps. She says, “I knew it was the one the second I tried the dress on; I looked in the mirror and cried. I’ve never really felt good about myself, but I loved how everything looked and I just felt amazing.” Rose-gold heeled sandals, a small pearl necklace and earrings finished off her look beautifully. The groom looked dashing in a lovely blue Marc Darcy suit with gold detailing on the pockets from Gere Menswear in Lincoln. To tie everything together, he added brown shoes and a gold tie. The couple’s two eldest sons Aaron and Joseph, were the groomsmen while their youngest was the pageboy – they looked adorable while matching with their dad. The bride wanted the day to be family-focused and didn’t have any bridesmaids. She comments, “I loved it that way; getting ready in the morning was so relaxed with just myself and my mum.”
TIME TO CELEBRATE Having the right entertainment company can really add to the wedding and create unforgettable moments. The Piano and Cello Duo provide live music on the day and created so much emotion. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house once they started playing as the bride stepped down the aisle. To keep the little ones happy, the couple provided garden games on the lawns and an ice-cream cart, which was a huge treat. The lovebirds couldn’t have a big evening reception because of Covid-19 restrictions, but that didn’t stop them from having the most relaxing evening. The couple loved being able to socialise with friends and family with some drinks.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS Both Kirsty and Ryan couldn’t stop smiling on the day, the wedding couldn’t have been better and exceeded all their expectations. Kirsty comments, “The ceremony performed by our celebrant Jenny Brown stood out the most to me. We were under the beautiful stone gazebo in the grounds, the weather was amazing and the atmosphere was beautiful with live music playing in the background.” After such a challenging year, having their loved ones together meant the world to the couple and the images showcase the love shared. Many suppliers made Kirsty and Ryan’s wedding extra special, especially the venue’s amazing team who were extremely helpful from the start and helped the couple create the perfect day.

very love story has a beginning, and Alexander and Abbie’s started as children when they lived next door to each other. Alexander would always play football with her brother; he says, “I always wanted to go up and speak to Abbie but never had the courage until we were older.” As years passed, the pair grew to love one another and Alex got on so well with Abbie’s daughter Alyssa. She adds, “Alex fitted seamlessly into our family from the start.” In 2018, Alexander decided it was the perfect time to ask Abbie to marry him in front of their Christmas tree – of course, she said yes! It was such a lovely moment when he gave Alyssa a ring too. Here Abbie shares details about their special day…

THE SECRET
Anthony and Paula-Joanne’s intimate wedding was full of personal touches Images courtesy of Pink Photographics
A
nthony and Paula-Joanne initially met on a dating website before meeting at the RAF Marham where Anthony was working before heading out on their first date to the Kings Arms Shouldham. PaulaJoanne says, “I was attracted to Tony’s looks and personality; he was a very genuine, loyal and caring person who is a true gentleman with a heart of gold.” Tony was attracted to her warmth, character and zest for life. He says, “She is an inspiration to so many and makes a room light up when she
enters. Paula always puts others before herself and would do anything for anyone. She is a loyal and honest friend to everyone she meets and I’m the luckiest man in the world!” When it came to finding the perfect way to propose, Anthony decided to jump 12,000ft out of a plane with a ring in his pocket and got on one knee as soon as he landed. Paula-Joanne was absolutely surprised and of course she said yes! Here she shared details about their special day… 33
We had an outdoor wedding due to Covid-19 restrictions. The legal ceremony took place at a registry office in Rutland and we had a celebrant-led ceremony at Barnsdale Gardens, which consists of 38 individually designed gardens with different themes and characteristics.
We had handmade biscuits for favours, which featured our names and the wedding date.
Directly after the wedding, six people (including the photographer and celebrant) had afternoon tea in the gardens with a glass or two of champagne. For the main evening dinner, only four people were present due to indoor limitations.
Our reception table had wooden place names, hearts and special champagne glasses.
Our carrot cake was from a place called Spokes Café, which we visit on a local cycling route. 34
My bouquet included an image of my late father and I had a blue pouch stitched to the dress containing a lock of his hair.
REAL WEDDINGS
We hired a silver Jaguar Mark II for our transport.
I wore a dress called Star, another tribute to my dad on the day, and accessorised it with a cathedral-length veil, a diamanté belt and matching headwear.
All my bridal alterations were done locally by a lady called Annette, she’s amazing and her work is perfection! The fabulous Keighley Hutson from Hair Perfection styled my hair.
Although getting ready for all brides can be stressful, I enjoyed the whole experience and the final reveal was beyond my wildest dreams – I felt like a princess!
The groom wore his number one military uniform with a cap, fullservice medals and a single white flower for the buttonhole. 35
We ended up having a secret wedding, which made the day even more special. We planned to tell the rest of our families the good news once the Covid restrictions had lifted, and arrange a belated wedding event so everyone could finally be part of our day.
We both felt so in love, happy and excited for the future on the day.
Having an intimate wedding allowed for a stress-free environment that was all about us.
My uncle Frank made the day extra special; he had always treated me like a daughter and has been a father figure to me, especially when my dad sadly passed away. It was an honour and a privilege that he gave me away.
A funny moment during the day was when my shoe fell apart and needed to be glued on mid photos.
My auntie Denise also made the day special; she has not only looked out for me but has had a significant impact on my life with our connection and friendship. We made such a connection with our celebrant Ruby right from the start. She got to know us and captured our love in her proceedings so perfectly. She worked hard in creating such a personal ceremony, which was breathtaking.
Our photographer Frankie captured the day perfectly and gave up a lot of her time making sure everything was perfect – I would have no hesitation in saying she is simply the best photographer around! We went to the Peak District for our honeymoon and had an action-packed adventure in our motorhome – it was simply perfect and gave us some time alone.
The wedding coordinator, Charlotte Darch, at Barnsdale Gardens ensured our day was perfect.

REGIONAL SHOOT
Meadow Vale Weddings provided the perfect backdrop to this autumnal shoot Images courtesy of Kirsty Rockett Photography

A
s the summer ended last year, it gave way to a spectacular autumnal display with amber leaves, dried cow parsley and hedgerow – that’s what inspired this shoot Meadow Vale Weddings. Inside the tipi supplied by Sami Tipi, Lesley at The Rustic Wedding Company created the beautiful styling, including a statement ceiling arrangement. The company added in vogue earthenware bottles, amber glasses and mini gourds to the tables and candlesticks and lanterns around the venue to add warmth. An arched table plan and welcoming sign from the Botanical Terazza range by Bluebell Press showcased smooth curves and a leaf print to match the theme. To add drama to the entrance of the tipi and other focal areas such as the bar and relaxation area, floral arrangements made from dried honesty, pampas, wheat, protea, helichrysum and ruscus in oatmeal, cappuccino and terracotta shades were used. The coordinating bridal bouquet designed by Sophie at Big Day Blooms and Cakes is an alternative to a fresh flower design, but with all the style of a traditional one. She says, “Not every bride wants heavy green foliage accents throughout their special day. Preserved foliage in a simple ivory palette provides the same structure as fresh foliage but a subtle background for brides wanting a purer look.” Big Day Blooms and Cakes wanted to demonstrate that less is more when creating a cake for this style of wedding. The bake needed to be understated as the dressed hoop is striking; that’s why the company added buttercream with edible pearls to enhance the look. Moira Borg Wedding Hairstylist formed the perfect hairstyle for the day and delicately wove the model a low bun. This meant that the keyhole back on the gown, Naomi by Essense of Australia, could be seen. The fishtail-style dress is available at Ivory White Bridal and features long-boho sleeves, a two-tone effect to contour the body, glitter tulle and beading. Hannah Finn Make-up produced a glowing natural look to finish everything off. Set against the rich fabric and clean lines from the House of Cavani suit from Coneys Designer Wear, the combined look of the couple gave them a defined presence against the tipi and surrounding countryside.

CAKES
Ready, set, bake Local suppliers from around the region offer their advice for creating the perfect wedding cake
41
www.ekrpictures.com
We’re currently planning our big day and we’ve decided against a traditional cake. Do you have any alternative suggestions? From doughnut towers to gooey brownie stacks, you’ll find an alternative option that you will love. A few years back, cupcake towers were extremely popular, but this has made way for cupcake tables instead. Imagine a long table with lots of different crates and stands all filled with different styles and flavours of cupcakes to cater for everyone. One of my favourite alternatives to a wedding cake is a gorgeous dessert or nibbles table – I can guarantee that your guests will love it too. Having an alternative option doesn’t mean you miss out on the popular cake cutting picture. You can have a small cake stacked up high as a centrepiece for the cake table – take a look at this gorgeous set up for example! Cakes can often be forgotten about as the day progresses; by having an array of sweet treats presented in rustic bowls or on gold trays by the cake will ensure guests keep seeing the masterpiece. Sophie Hunt | Red Robin Cakery | www.redrobincakery.co.uk
We’d love to have a luxurious cake on our big day, but we’re worried about the price tag. Do you have any ideas to keep the price down? It’s very important when planning a wedding to have a budget and stay within this figure. Everyone wants to have a luxurious cake on their special day and this can be achieved in a few ways. One thing to remember is that wedding cakes vary in size and design. As it takes time to create curtain details, the more intricate designs will result in higher costs. That’s why real, dried, or silk flowers are cheaper than sugar flowers, which takes time to create. Dummy polystyrene tiers are a great way to create an illusion of a larger cake while still catering for your number of guests. But remember, they still need to be covered and decorated. Another factor to consider is the venue’s distance. If your wedding is far away, it might be worth looking at a cake maker nearer the property to reduce the delivery charge. A smaller wedding cake can always be accompanied by a kitchen cake sliced up behindthe-scenes to offer extra flavour choices without increasing the number of tiers. Lastly, ingredients will affect the price tag. If you’re having lots of tiers that include champagne or alcohol, this will increase the price of the bake. Joanna Evans | Joanna Evans Cake Design www.joannaevanscakedesign.co.uk

We love flowers and want to incorporate them into our cake design. What do you recommend we look for? Whether you decide on sugar or fresh flowers, adding florals gives a perfect touch of elegance and romance to any design. We specialise in sugar flowers, which take the utmost care and time in preparing them petal by petal to ensure each one is made to perfection. Bakers can produce your favourite blooms in advance to match any colour scheme no matter what season you’re tying the knot. Sample flowers can be created for you to view, and any elements can be changed. The bonus of sugar blooms is that they can be saved as a keepsake if cared for correctly. Fresh flowers can look exquisite on a beautifully finished wedding cake, especially when purchased from the wedding florist to ensure all blooms are matching on the day. It’s important to pick a cake maker who’s confident in arranging fresh flowers as they need to be prepared correctly by placing the stem in food-safe picks before they’re inserted into the cake. Fresh flowers can also be dried, pressed and kept as a beautiful keepsake after the special day. Whatever option you choose, don’t let flowers be an afterthought as they can transform a cake into something spectacular. CAKES
Every couple wants to have the perfect wedding cake, but it all starts with finding the right supplier. With an array of cake bakers in the East Midlands, finding the ideal company can be tricky. That’s why we’ve created this fourstep guide to make to process more manageable. STEP ONE: DO YOUR RESEARCH First things first, there are lots of companies out there all costing different amounts and it’s important to stick to your budget. Rule out any companies you can’t afford, which might be difficult but remember why you set that price limit to start with. When researching companies, don’t just look through websites. Check each supplier’s social media pages to view their work and see if the style matches your day. It’s also the perfect opportunity to discover more inspiration. If you’ve already picked a venue, check with the team if they have a list of recommended suppliers. This is a great way to find local, trustworthy companies they’ve worked with before.
STEP TWO: READ REVIEWS Once you have narrowed down your search, the next stage is to read about other couples’ experiences with the businesses. Facebook and Goggle are two excellent places to read reviews, and this process will be your best friend. Here, any issues about the company will be flagged up. By reading through the comments, you’ll discover if the company is reliable, hardworking, fair and if the team has good communication skills – you’ll never want to be left in the dark about anything.
STEP THREE: CONTACT SUPPLIERS Once you have completed the above steps, it’s time to contact the companies and we suggest meeting suppliers face-to-face. You can pick a relaxing environment for the meeting, such as a coffee shop and this will allow you to get a feel of the team, connect on a personally level, show inspiration photos, and discuss contracts, which can sometimes be confusing. Meeting in person might not be possible with the current pandemic, but don’t worry as Skype, Facetime and Zoom are all excellent services that let you video chat people from home. When discussing details with the baker, here are a few questions that are important to ask… ❤ How long has the company been running and how many wedding cakes have you created? ❤ Can I view the portfolio of your work? ❤ Would you be delivering and setting up the cake on the wedding day? ❤ Will there be any additional costs that I should know about? ❤ What designs do you specialise in? ❤ How far in advice will you create my wedding cake?
STEP FOUR: THE FINAL DECISION When making the final decision, talk to your partner about what’s important to them and together, pick the right option for the day. Take into consideration your theme, budget and gut feeling. Once you have found the one, the real fun begins with caketasting sessions and design consultations where your vision will come to life. 45

BUZZ
BYE BYE TO DRY
When you’re adorned in light, soft and smooth fabrics on your wedding day the last thing you want is to have that bubble popped by dry and rough feet tucked into those https://youtu.be/Vck_6T7VrZs Jimmy Choos you’ve been saving for. The Skin Republic Foot Peel offers the solution. Rather satisfyingly gross, it will remove dead skin in seven to 10 days, thanks to its dual-layered booties infused with an exfoliating serum packed with plant extracts and alpha hydroxy acids. After wearing them for up to two hours, over the course of the next week to ten days, you’ll be able to see the peel working as dead skin cells, calluses and rough skin flake away to leave soft, soothed and hydrated tootsies. If you dare, click play to see how I got on with the peel. For ultimate results, use twice a month for the first month and then as required. Priced at £9.99, its available at www.superdrug.com

So, don’t be afraid of over-toning your locks. Think of this duo as a gradual tanner for your hair. Fudge Professional is available to buy from hair salons nationwide or online at uk.fudgeprofessional.com where the two are priced at £23.80 if you buy as a bundle.
BEAUTY NEWS
ROSY GLOW
Some exciting newness from Pixi Beauty has hit the shelves recently and I’m nuts about the +Rose Glow-y Powder (£14) in particular. This https://youtu.be/EO3_TuWvc3E silky soft, rose infused, multiuse powder can be applied as a veil of blush or highlighter adding a touch of radiance and luminosity as it brightens the complexion. What’s more, the natural mineral formula contains ceremides to give time-release moisture to the skin. Click play and check out the bridal look I’ve created using this beauty with the Flawless Beauty Primer, +C Under Eye Brightener, Endless Shade Stick in pink quartz and Endless Silky Eye Pen in black noir. All of which are available at https://pixibeauty.co.uk
THE CLEANSING EXPRESS
Following the award-winning success of its legendary cleanser, Eve Lom has created a new generation lightweight gel balm cleanser formulated to address the fast-paced lifestyle of the modern woman. When massaged into wet skin, the easy-to-use formula gently transforms from a gel balm texture into a soothing milky cleanser that’s quick to rinse off and leaves skin blissfully soft. Fortified with a high dose of shea butter and nourishing grapeseed oil, it’s clinically proven to moisturise skin for up to 12 hours after use. Using Eve Lom’s signature blend of clove, eucalyptus, hops and chamomile oils, it dissolves impurities and all traces of make-up, including waterproof mascara, in an instant. Check out www.evelom.co.uk
POLISH PERFECTION
Ok, has anyone else noticed how incessant use of hand sanitiser ruins a maincure? Annoying isn’t it? Apparently the alcohol they contain, which is designed to break down germs and bacteria, while protecting us from Covid, unfortunately does the same to nail varnish. Not only that, but it also dries out nails, which in turn causes polish to chip. So, we were thrilled when we found out that the brilliant folk at Barry M have come up with a Sanitiser Proof Topcoat – genius! Stay safe and look fab. A steal at £3.99 it’s available at www.barrym.com, Superdrug and Boots.
SILVER BULLET Adult acne is now the most common skin complaint amongst women, largely due to stress and a building intolerance to chemicals in cosmetic and skin care products. The most common way of treating acne breakouts is with an antibacterial wash, however what these do is wash away the good bacteria along with the bad – not great for the overall health and youthfulness of your skin. Silver Serum from Skin Shop is a smart anti-bacterial skin treatment that contains the patented ingredient MicroSilver, which specifically seeks out and kills harmful bacteria while leaving the friendly stuff intact. Bridal make-up artist Jo Crossley recommends the product to brides who may be prone to breakouts before their big day. She says, “It’s effective and great when you need results fast!” Free from perfume, parabens MI and SLS, it costs £12.95 from www.clarol.co.uk
BE AT PEACE
Cult US brand, Peace Out Skincare has landed in the UK with a mission is to help you bring peace to your skin through effective and fun skincare solutions like the acne dots, pore strips and daily targeted routine solutions like the retinol eye stick. I love the Peace Out Puffy Eyes. Ideal if lack of sleep from excitement the night before the big day has left peepers looking a little tired. Packed with brightening power players caffeine, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid they revitalise tired-looking eyes by helping to reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles in just 15 minutes. Priced at £23 for 12 patches and available at www.boots.com
HAIR REPAIR
If damaged hair is cause for concern in the lead up to the big day, reset your locks with a deep hydration. Bored during lock down, I bleached the ends of my hair on a whim – as you do – and over time they have become brittle and dry. So, I gave On A Cloud Baobab Oil Masque, R+Co’s newest launch, a try. The protein-rich, creamy formula renews damaged hair fibres bringing nourishment, strength and elasticity to your strands, while the baobab oil protein rebuilds bonds. Massage into wet hair after shampooing and leave for five to 10 minutes, depending on how damaged you feel your hair is, and rinse. I was pleased how the shine was restored once more and the ends were left feeling smoother and stronger. The new On A Cloud range also includes the Baobab Oil Repair Shampoo, and Baobab Oil Repair Splash On Styler. Priced at £40 the masque is available with the rest of the range at www.rebelbeautybrands.com 61

ASK THE EXPERTS
Q&A Our experts give their advice to help you look your big-day best
FASHION-FORWARD My fiancé is much taller than me – what dress style would you recommend for a shorter bride to give the illusion of height? All good things come in small packages, so don’t stress about your height as there are lots of ways we can help you appear taller. Choosing a dress with the same fabric throughout the whole design will help give the illusion of height and elongate your figure. The good news is that these dresses are very much on-trend this season. Also, vertical seams on a plain dress creates a lengthening effect. If you’re looking for a fuller skirt and are drawn towards princess/ ballgown-style dresses, have a look at a high-waisted A-line dress which, similarly, will make your legs appear much longer. Libby Morton | Yes Bridal Studio | www.yesbridalstudio.co.uk
HAIR-GOALS
www.frenchbywendymakin.com
I have short hair and I’m looking for ways to style it for my wedding, what would you suggest? Having shorter hair does limit your style choices slightly, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have different options on your special day! Your choice will depend on how short your hair is. If you have a pixie-style cut, you can blow dry your hair while adding movement and texture with a wax spray or why not create a quaffed style? If your hair is slightly longer on top, add soft curls for a whimsical look or tighter curls for an edgier option. Accessories are your best friend when it comes to pixie cuts, a flower crown, birdcage veil or a decorative hair slide all look fabulous with short styles. If you have shoulder-length hair, you might be surprised by the options available for you. A soft curl or boho waves either down or styled into a cute half-up hairstyle always looks great – add a braid to add some extra detail. Depending on your hair texture, there are a few options for a low up do. Keep the design low into the neck so it’s easily secured while having the illusion of a lot more hair. THE HEALTHY Achieve the wedding tresses of your dreams with help from trichologist Anabel Kingsley
A
nabel Kingsley, daughter of renowned trichologist Philip Kingsley, is a consultant trichologist and president of global brand Philip Kingsley with clinics in London and New York. Inspired by her father from an early age, she has an immense passion for hair and scalp health. The depth of her knowledge in the field is practically endless, so who better to turn to for advice on getting your locks wedding-ready? Here, Anabel gives us the benefit of her wisdom on everything from achieving the right length for that perfect up do, to nutrition and the impact of stress. DRY HAIR PRONE TO BREAKAGE? Dry hair usually occurs as a result of too much heat-styling and bleaching, as well as UV, chlorinated and salt water exposure. You should care for your scalp in a similar way to the skin on your face. I’d suggest shampooing daily if you can, but certainly don’t leave more than three days between washes. 66
Daily toning of the scalp is also helpful. Apply a soothing, antimicrobial toner containing witch hazel or camphor after shampooing, conditioning and towel-drying hair. You could also benefit from gentle weekly exfoliation. Exfoliating masks should be applied preshampoo and left on for around 20 minutes. Good ingredients to look out for are aloe vera and betaine salicylate. Then, to moisturise dry
strands, work a pre-shampoo conditioner into your hair once a week, or twice if it’s particularly parched. When you heat-style, hold the dryer at least 12 inches away to avoid placing excessive heat on the hair shaft. Then stop when it’s only just dry, as applying heat to already dry hair will remove moisture from within rather than the water sitting on top. Limit use of straighteners and tongs as much as possible, but when you find yourself reaching for them be sure to use a heat protective spray or serum such as Philip Kingsley’s Finishing Touch Polishing Serum and don’t go over the same areas repeatedly. HELP, MY HAIR’S NOT GROWING! Take care of your scalp; it’s your hair’s support system. A healthy scalp promotes healthy hair
BEAUTY INTERVIEW growth. Following the aforementioned daily cleanse, tone and mask regime is a great first step on the road to luscious long locks. Provided you’re not experiencing hair loss, but simply want to maximise your hair’s growth potential, eating well will certainly help. Hair isn’t an essential tissue – it’s the last part of you to receive nutrients, but the first to have them withheld. So, any nutritional deficiency can negatively impact your hair long before it affects your general health. Eating at least a palm-sized portion of protein and a serving of complex carbohydrates at breakfast and lunch will help your strands to grow long and strong. It’s important never to skip breakfast. This is the most important meal of the day for your hair as it’s when energy levels to the follicles are at their lowest. A great example of a healthy-hair breakfast would be poached eggs with whole-wheat toast, quinoa porridge with berries and toasted almonds, or smoked salmon on a bagel. Don’t be afraid to snack as the energy needed to form hair cells drops four hours after eating. I recommend reaching for a nutrientdense healthy snack such as crudité and hummus, fresh fruit or toast with almond butter. Overall, make sure you eat a balanced diet – if you’re deficient in a certain vitamin or mineral it can affect your hair and it’s growth. Amino acids, omega 3, zinc, iron and vitamin B12 are all crucial. However, try to avoid mercury-rich fish, such as tuna and swordfish as high levels can affect the growth cycle. Likewise, if you suffer from dandruff, cut back on full-fat dairy products as this can trigger flaking and itching. Finally, be gentle. Unlike your skin, your strands don’t regenerate if they’re damaged. So, be careful when you style, brush, detangle, shampoo and towel dry. WHAT PRODUCTS ARE BEST FOR ME? Like skincare, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to haircare. The integrity of a product and what
hair texture it will work for largely depends on the concentration and quality of the ingredients, which is well nigh impossible to ascertain from the labels. We have to trust the description given as a guide, but I’d recommend that as a rule of thumb you don’t choose a shampoo based on normal, oily or dry descriptions, as your normal won’t be someone else’s normal. Instead, pick one that’s formulated based on hair texture. The following should help steer you in the right direction: ❤ Afro Caribbean hair. Often prone to damage as weak points form along the hair shaft where curls occur, and is also highly porous. Choose a shampoo that intensively moisturises and gently cleanses at the same time. ❤ Coarse hair. More porous than medium or fine textures, it’s prone to moisture loss becoming dry and frizzy. Use a re-moisturising shampoo with anti-static ingredients. ❤ Medium texture. Tends to get slightly oily
at the roots and dry at the ends. Use a moisture-balancing shampoo to address both needs. ❤ Fine hair. With more oil glands on the scalp hair can become lank and easily weighed down. Use a cleansing yet gently bodybuilding shampoo rich in thickening proteins. STRESS TEST Stress can really do a number on your hair, mainly because it’s bad for your health in general. When you’re feeling stressed, your brain doesn’t distinguish between the stress you might be under at work or from planning a wedding, and the kind you’d experience in a life-or-death situation. As such, the chemical reactions produced in your body are similar and result in a fight or flight response, triggering unwanted hair and scalp effects such as excessive daily hair fall and increased sebum production. In terms of stress management techniques, it really depends on what works for you and your schedule. Some find Pilates and yoga classes helpful, while others prefer at-home meditation or using mindfulness apps a couple of times a day. Alternatively, you may find walking, swimming or reading relaxing. Hair loss in itself is stressful and while it’s difficult to remain calm, I advise my clients to be patient, trust in the treatment and leave their worries with us at the clinic. Once a person steps through our doors, it’s our job to put them at ease and provide them with a comprehensive treatment plan. I also advise them not to Google! There’s so much mis-information online, and the internet can come up with some pretty scary and unhelpful things. For further information on specific hair-related concerns and how a trichologist might be able to help you, check out www.philipkingsley.co.uk, where you can also find the full Philip Kingsley product range. 67

EXPERT ADVICE
HOT TOPIC Top advice for the perfect wedding
CAPTURE THE MOMENT
THE DREAM TEAM We’ve just started planning our wedding, what advice can you share when it comes to finding wedding suppliers? Here at The Society of Professional Wedding Vendors, we get asked this question a lot. I always suggest that your check if the suppliers are a part of our group because SPWV members must abide by a code of conduct to ensure you get the best service with no hidden nasties. We also vet our vendors to make sure they have insurance and a contract in place. When sourcing companies, always do your research and check their website, google reviews and social media accounts. Then speak to at least three suppliers in each trade before choosing one. Make sure that the images you see online are photos they can show you in real life. The use of stock imagery is fine as long as it’s evident to potential clients; the last thing you want to do is hire a supplier based on the pictures on their website, only to discover that it’s not a reflection of their work. Lastly, ensure that you have a contract and receipt for your payments and that the businesses are insured.
What are the pros of having a videographer at our wedding? Having a videographer at your wedding is essential, with many couples commenting that it’s the best money they have spent. The day can be such a whirlwind of emotions and can whizz by in a dream-like blur. Long after the cake has been eaten, the flowers have wilted and the memories of the day begin to fade; couples can watch their video to relive their most important day. A video brings the day back to life and to be able to listen back to the vows and speeches is something special. Your video will become a treasured family heirloom to look back on for years to come. Often, seeing moving images of loved ones who are no longer with us is a powerful way to remember them. Long gone are the days of fuzzy, poor quality videos that end up being stored in the loft gathering dust. With high-definition visuals and sound, these modern films take you right back to the day. There has also never been a better time to share your day online with friends and family on social media. Neil Priestley | One Fine Day Productions www.onefinedayproductions.co.uk

We want a personal wedding, and a friend mentioned hiring a celebrant for the ceremony. What are the benefits of having one on our special day? Independent celebrants will work with clients to create a beautiful, meaningful wedding ceremony that reflects you both. The experience will be truly unique, while depicting your love story in any chosen location; you can exchange vows during a formal service in a stunning stately home, on a remote beach, at a large woodland gathering or during an intimate garden party at your family home. Your bespoke ceremony can include poetry, prayers, readings, music, religious content from any faith as well as beautiful rituals such as hand-tying, wine, rose or sand ceremonies. The possibilities are endless and very exciting. Ruby Adds | Love Birds, Weddings & Events www.mylovebirdswedding.com

EXCHANGING LOVE
STYLE IT OUT We’re getting married in a few weeks, but we’ve left most of the planning until the last minute and I’m panicking about how to decorate our venue. Do you have any suggestions? Don’t panic because a talented supplier will be able to select a colour, theme or prop and use this as a base to create your dream aesthetic to complement your venue. Using chair drapes and table runners are two quick and effective ways to instantly create an atmosphere to the event while brightening up any room. You can also design a luxury tablescape by adding gold or vintage brass candlesticks to each table, which can be used for multiple themes. We’re planning our special day and want some fashion advice for my dress and my bridesmaids’ attire. What advice can you share with us? With wedding season officially back on, here’s my go-to guide for dressing your best girls, just be careful not to upstage the bride: Carrie Bradshaw eat your heart out! I’m a big Sex and the City fan and the television series returning to our screens this summer has inspired many dress designs. Think frothy tulle skirts and you get the idea – perfect for a chic-city wedding. Simply add a pair of Manolos! Grown-up pastels are the shades of the season with sage-green and soft-mauve dresses being a fashionable choice. Muted metallics are also hot hues to be seen in, from champagne and rose gold to silver-grey. Dress your flowergirls in cute candy shades with contrasting pastel posies to finish. Consider ombre bridesmaids’ dresses if your theme includes lots of colours. They are super-stylish and will help tie everything together. After a year of lockdown, gowns are more glamorous than ever, with full-length styles featuring statement voluminous skirts. Statement sleeves are the fashion buzzword of the season and help to keep everyone feeling snug, especially if you intend on roasting marshmallows around a firepit. Pick a jacket or bolero with fluted or ruched sleeves. Claire Ridley | Fashion editor at County Wedding Magazine www.county.wedding

Emma says: This photograph brings me joy; it’s the perfect example of how every couple should feel the morning of their wedding. The bridal prep is one of my favourite parts of a wedding day.
DANIEL BURTON AT DANIEL BURTON PHOTOGRAPHY LTD Daniel says: Not only did this image win me my first Masters of Photography UK & Ireland award, but it’s a photo I took at my mother-in-law’s wedding and makes everyone who sees it smile! 73
Emma says: This image means a lot to me as the bride is one of my oldest friends; I formed two rows of people, 200 guests in total, and took control to capture that all important confetti shot!

Emma says: This photo shows an intimate moment between husband and wife just after the ceremony. For me, this moment is so special and something to always include in a wedding gallery.
Stuart says: If a wedding is about love, Nicci and Victoria personify that perfectly. The couple are friends of mine and are two beautiful people and it was a joy to capture their small, intimate ceremony – a personal favourite image of mine for many reasons.

Katie says: I took this image at my friend’s wedding; the pressure is on when you’re close to the couple! But she knew my style and was fully invested to try anything that I suggested! I love natural shots, and this image captured the moment they share the first look as Mr and Mrs!
Daniel says: This image is from one of my first weddings this year after the Covid-19 wedding restrictions started to lift. I had the most amazing couple who turned this farm venue with a barn and outdoor option into a new wedding venue in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. I was glad to be part of the road test and their wedding!

Daniel says: This photo shows one of many effects I can do at weddings in one shot with no Photoshop! The wedding was also musically the best party of 2019 - I could not leave the dancefloor at the end. www.kt-photo.com
Emma says: My favourite image is this epic bride and groom portrait. It’s always good to spend some time during your wedding day away from all your guests and have some images as newlyweds. The groom carried his bride back down the hill after we got this shot!

Katie says: I feel like this image is so romantic and captures how in love the couple is! I like to deliver a mixture of colour and black and white photography to give my clients a good mix of options. I feel like this black and white image empathises the romantic atmosphere.
Daniel says: I love capturing the facial expression of many grooms right before their bride or groom-to-be walks down the aisle. They try to shrug off the nerves and emotion before their other half sees, but I always capture it!

Ready, set, plan!
County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
H
Like most venues, ours has a list of caterers that we were asked to choose from for the wedding breakfast. We’re complete foodies and were excited to go through the menus and make a decision – even though the process did make me snack constantly and ruined my wedding diet. We needed to confirm a company without tasting anything due to lockdown restrictions, which the control freak in me found pretty stressful as we didn’t want to make the wrong decision. So before committing, we researched the companies, looked at reviews, compared prices, locations, COVID-19 policies and the menus until (finally) we had a winner. To keep things relaxed, we’ve decided on a barbecue instead of a traditional three-course meal and have booked a tasting for later in the year – hurrah!
through the images and decided on the style we liked (the fun part) and how much we wanted to spend (the not so fun part). We organised video chats with two of them, and Dave, who is very decisive, felt an instant connection with the photographer who was recommended to us by a friend. He was lovely and put us both at ease right away. I made a list of questions to ask him (colour-coded of course), and he answered each one effortlessly. He had great reviews online, and we felt really confident about booking him. We’ve organised a pre-wedding shoot later this year, which will hopefully make us feel more comfortable in front of the camera! Next issue, hear all about our flowers and my hunt for the perfect dress. If you have any tips you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you. Drop me an email at Melissab@kdmediapublishing.com
FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD
PRETTY AS A PICTURE
As some of you may know from last issue we’ve booked our gorgeous venue and were beginning to think about the best part, the food!
Due to 2020’s wedding wipeout and the increase of rescheduled weddings to an already busy summer wedding season, we started looking right away for our photographer before they were all booked. I’ve worked at County Wedding Magazines for almost five years, and during that time, I’ve seen hundreds of amazing weddings, which made finding the perfect supplier feel really daunting. We started by looking through wedding magazines and Instagram and narrowed down our list to five potentials. We found that most photographers don’t generally include their pricing on their website, so we emailed all of them and asked for their brochures and price lists. Once they’d all responded, we looked

ello to all my fellow nearlyweds-to-be! My wedding is just over a year away, and as much as I hate to admit it, I’m officially a bridezilla! I’m obsessively organised at the best of times, but knowing we have a whole day to plan with all eyes on us has sent my OCD into overdrive. My fiancé, Dave, calls it ‘wedding brain’ and likes to tease me about my folders and schedules, but keeping everything neat is definitely helping reduce my anxiety. Obviously, I have ages until our big day, but I find myself dreaming about silly things, like the wrong flowers turning up, Dave forgetting his suit (a strong possibility) or my dress not fitting. Some of my friends tying the knot have admitted to being the same, so if you find yourself worrying about trivial details, don’t panic, you’re not alone!

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.
BRIDE’S DIARY
I’m hoping to grow my hair longer for the big day, so I can have loose curls with a beautiful hair piece.
Our venue has a lavender field nearby, so we’re planning to have our pictures taken there.
We’re not sure if we’re going to have wedding favours, but if we do, we like the idea of something like this.
A room full of candles is a must!
For my wedding ring, I’ve decided to have a row I never wear make-up, so I’m planning to go for of diamonds that match my engagement ring. a very natural look.
Since we’re getting married in July, Dave is leaning towards a more casual, summery look.
No matter how hard I try, I can’t walk in heels, so I’m going to wear a pair of white trainers.
This popcorn set up is super cute. We’d love to do something similar but with sweets. 79

HONEYMOONS
fo May
Hannah Faulder receives a true Yorkshire welcome at The Alice Hawthorn in Nun Monkton rriving in Nun Monkton is like stepping back in time. Nestled between York and Harrogate, the village is home to a 20-acre green surrounded by picture-perfect cottages; at the centre is a twinkling pond, complete with dabbling ducks. Insects buzz merrily through the swaying grass and cows lazily graze among the buttercups. The huge maypole evokes that nostalgic country village feel. This bucolic setting is the home of the Grade II-listed Alice Hawthorn. The pub has been expertly reimagined as a destination dining spot with luxury rooms while remaining true to its purpose at the heart of village life. We were told that the pub’s namesake was a famous racehorse owned by local man John Plummer, who unexpectedly received the horse in a will and named it after the local blacksmith’s daughter. The building looks every bit the archetypal country pub, especially with its cosy, dogfriendly bar, and its serene setting means it couldn’t be more perfect for a chilled-out honeymoon or post-vow getaway. After a long few months of lockdown followed by grey and drizzly weather, my husband, Cal, and I were delighted to find that spring had finally sprung when we arrived at The Alice Hawthorn at the end of May.
STAY We checked into one of the four Pub Rooms, which boasted postcard-worthy villagegreen views. Quiet despite the hubbub of the restaurant, the room’s high ceilings and exposed beams create drama, while the comfort,
amenities and calming palette were homely. The room was decorated with exceptional taste; it’s a real skill to retain the character of a place like this while injecting a modern edge. I particularly enjoyed luxuriating in the freestanding bath tub before jumping into the enormous bed with its crisp white sheets. A tour of the newly launched Garden Rooms to the rear of the pub showed that the impeccable style is carried throughout. With more than just a nod to its agricultural roots, the rooms are constructed from Douglas fir and finished inside and out with light-coloured timber. The result is an oasis of calm, with a feeling of space and an abundance of natural light.
EAT The restaurant has long been a foodie destination. Chef partner John Topham focuses his talents on creating incredible menus with seasonal produce and local ingredients. To me, food that reflects the locality and is at one with its setting is real luxury. The service is wonderful; attentive yet informal, the friendly staff add to the vibe. We particularly enjoyed chatting with the lovely Enzo, whom we ended up having a drink with while he told us stories of the pub’s heritage. For foodie couples, there’s a gorgeous barn-style private dining room, which would make the most wonderful big-day setting for up to 30 guests. The Yorkshire asparagus starter with poached hen’s eggs and croquette potatoes just tasted of springtime, while my veggie option of harissa roast aubergine with tabbouleh and broadbean pesto had the most wonderful balance of flavours. My meat-eating husband had the special: stone bass with gnocchi and mussels, which he devoured. On the second night, he proclaimed the Whitby crab mayo with guacamole and sweetcorn ice cream the best
starter he’d ever eaten. In the morning, you must treat yourself to the breakfast. The crushed avocado and poached egg on sourdough is the ideal way to start your day. Although we couldn’t take advantage of the hotel’s Pizza in the Gardens nights (they start in June, so for a future trip, perhaps?), we could just imagine being in the Mediterranean-style setting of the beer garden, toes-in-grass, with the smell of stone-baked pizza in the air and a jazz band creating the perfect summer-evening atmosphere.
EXPLORE If you can drag yourself away, there are plenty of great places to check out before retiring to the serenity of your room… ❤ The National Trust’s Beningbrough Hall is accessible via a ferryboat across the river from Nun Monkton. The Italianate hall is surrounded by beautiful formal gardens. ❤ There’s plenty of gorgeous countryside to explore on foot. We visited the village’s pretty church with its William Morrisdesigned stained-glass window, grabbed a sneak peak at the grand Priory and strolled down to the river. There’s even a handy book of walks in the rooms. ❤ Yorkshire Heart Vineyard is about a mile down the road. We couldn’t leave without a bottle of their rosé wine. ❤ Nearby Harrogate is a charming Victorian spa town with pretty gardens and boutique shops. A trip to the famous Bettys Tea Rooms is practically a legal obligation while here (that’s what I told my husband anyway). ❤ York is a huge draw with the city walls to explore, the huge Gothic cathedral, the Jorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum. It’s a busy day, but retiring to The Alice Hawthorn’s beer garden for a well-earned pint makes it all worth it.
