ello lovely readers, and welcome to another issue of Your East Midlands Wedding. I hope you’ve started 2022 off with a bang and have already achieved any New Year’s resolutions. For me personally, my goals are to make quality time for loved ones while ensuring I leave enough time for myself – it’s about finding that right balance. This year will be one of the most exciting wedding seasons so far, with many couples tying the knot, including my close friend who has given me the honour of being a bridesmaid at her wedding – how exciting! The countdown is certainly on, and July couldn’t come around quicker. If you’re at the start of your planning journey, then you’ve come to the right place because we cover everything from fashion and beauty advice, wedding cakes, venues and more. Suppliers have been working hard all around the region to help couples create their dream day. My advice for all nearlyweds would be to start wedding planning early to avoid disappointment. Book your favourite suppliers first because there’s nothing worse than finding out your dream companies are fully booked. If you’re towards the end of your planning journey, we have the perfect features to help you add the finishing touches and help solve any last minute worries or problems.

Say “I do” at these beautiful outdoor venues

Nestled in the heart of the Peak District National Park, Tissington Hall is a beautiful location with countryside views. Francis FitzHerbert built the Grade II listed building, which features an imposing southern approach via a grand gateway followed by an avenue of lime trees. While each space is picture-perfect, the gardens are the estate’s crown jewel with curated gardens, which are spectacular when in bloom. Couples can exchange vows in The Main Hall surrounded by 100 guests. The space is cooling in the summer months, thanks to the stone walls and cosy in the winter with a roaring log fire. Alternatively, The East Drawing Room can host up to 50 guests and has dark-wood floors, a huge fireplace and soft furnishings that are perfect for intimate ceremonies. Lastly, The Arcade Terrace is ideal for summer weddings with 150 people if the sun is shining. Drinks receptions take place in and around the hall and gardens, with guests having the opportunity to wander around the rooms in the hall and seek out their favourite books in the library. Wedding breakfasts can occur in the recently renovated 18th-century Carriage House, perfect for intimate nuptials with light and airy spaces. Another option is The Arboretum Pavilion Marquee, which is nestled in the gardens and can accommodate wedding breakfasts and evening celebrations. With a fully stocked bar, plenty of room for a band or DJ and ample dancefloor space, it’s the ideal place to dance the night away. Tissington Hall is a magical place that’s looked after by the dedicated team, who can guide couples throughout the planning experience. Why leave the beautiful estate when there’s guest accommodation within the Tissington village? 23

IS ALL AROUND

Sam and Michaela’s wedding at Rushton Hall Hotel featured a white and green colour scheme Images courtesy of Absolutephotouk

28

REAL WEDDINGS

S

am and Michaela first met on Plenty of Fish, a popular dating app, and set off for their first date after messaging back and forth. Michaela says, “The conversation flowed effortlessly, and I was instantly attracted to his looks, ambition and selflessness.” The pair realised they’d found the one at a three-day horse show, which Michaela was competing in. After the first two days of the event, she had fallen off twice and felt upset about her performance. But Sam inspired her to stay for the qualifying round, and she ended up winning thanks to his support. From that moment on, the pair knew they’d met their perfect match. Every year around Christmas time, the couple visits Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, London Olympia Horse Show, and finishes some last-minute shopping. But Sam planned something extra special on this trip. Michaela comments, “We were with friends and saw a horse and carriage outside, which looked like something out of a movie. Our friends encouraged us to take a photo with the two white horses, and we posed for the photo. Sam suddenly dropped down on one knee and asked me to marry him – I couldn’t control my emotions and cried with sheer happiness.” Of course the bride said yes, and the pair travelled in the horse and carriage through Covent Garden until they arrived at Dirty Martinis, where loved ones were waiting to celebrate. The couple set the wedding date for the 1st August 2021 and wanted to create a relaxed day where friends and family could come together to celebrate.

SETTING THE SCENE Situated in Northamptonshire, Rushton Hall Hotel is a beautiful venue with many historical spaces for lovebirds to explore. What location would be better for Sam and Michaela’s special day? The bride says, “I had visited the property numerous times before and had always said it was my dream to tie the knot there. I never thought it would be possible, but my mum encouraged us to get a brochure, and the venue was within our budget!” The lovebirds didn’t want to take away from the venue’s beautiful spaces, especially in The Orangery, and kept all venue styling simple. They opted for a vintage mirror in a champagne-coloured frame for the table plan, and each table was labelled with a number to help guests find their seats. The favours were elegantly displayed in marblepatterned boxes with names written in calligraphy to doubled up as place names. Inside, guests found grey and white personalised M&M’S and some love hearts. The pair sent menu options to guests before the wedding to help them decide what they wanted to eat. They then had A5 cards created with each person’s food options to help the staff serve the food without any confusion.

29

After the wedding breakfast, loved ones could try the impressive four-tiered cake. The bottom layer had a faint-marble pattern while the second had a soft-crystal effect, and the top two levels featured flowers. Michaela says, “Neither of us particularly like colourful florals, so we picked white blooms with plenty of foliage for a classic look.”

LOOKING THE PART Michaela wore a stunning dress from the Pronovias Privee collection called The Pickford, which had a 1920s-inspired style with delicate beading and a detachable skirt. The bride-to-be came across Jaynes Bridalwear after searching high and low for the gown online, and the dress had just arrived in store. Once Covid-19 restrictions lifted, Michaela tried it on straight away and knew it was perfect. She says, “I felt so beautiful and elegant when I tried it on. Sam bought a delicate diamond bracelet and some pearl earrings to wear on the day, which finished off my look perfectly.” The groom opted for classic-styled tuxedos for him and the groomsmen. Sam and his best man wore waistcoats to stand out, unlike the others who wore braces.

TIME TO CELEBRATE Booking a live band was essential to the couple as they wanted guests to have a fantastic evening. The bride says, “The first supplier we booked was Agent Smith. We were over the moon with their performance on the day, and they knew how to get our guests on the dancefloor!” Another big hit with loved ones was the magic mirror, which created the perfect memento to look back on after the day.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS The couple had worked hard to create their dream wedding and couldn’t be happier with the results. A few moments from the day really stood out to them. The bride says, “After we got married, our toastmaster pulled us to one side while the guests went outside for the confetti throw. We got to speak as a married couple for the first time and had a glass of champagne to celebrate – it was an extraordinary moment for us both.” Another special moment was when the bride’s grandma, who could not attend the wedding, called the couple on Facetime from Wales. Their talented photographer Howard from Absolutephotouk captured the moment for the pair to treasure. Two suppliers went above and beyond to ensure the couple had the perfect day. Michaela says, “Our Harpist, Soraya Vermeulen, learnt a new arrangement of the traditional Wedding March and our first dance song – everyone commented on how incredible she was.” She adds, “The toastmaster Alan Hodge was just amazing and made the whole day run smoothly without us having to think about anything. His humour was great, and I don’t think we could have done it without him.”

atalie and Stewart first met at their local dance school and got to know each other more by performing in pantomimes together. After going their separate ways, the pair lost contact for a few years but bumped into each other after being casted for West Side Story. From that moment, they started to form a strong connection and slowly fell in love. On a trip to New York for Natalie’s surprise 30th birthday, Stewart found the perfect moment to propose. He set up his phone in Central Park for a selfie but was secretly recording and managed to capture the whole thing! The couple set the wedding date for June 19th 2021, and created the most beautiful day surrounded by loved ones. Here Natalie shares details about their special day... 35

centrepieces.

We picked Buxton Crescent Hotel for our wedding venue because it had recently been restored and was close to Buxton Opera House, where we rekindled our friendship.

We had a beautiful white and gold table plan; each table was named after a musical we both loved.

The groom wore a Moss Bros. navy suit and bow tie, which matched the groomsmen.

We both felt extremely happy on the day!

For our honeymoon, we travelled around the North Coast 500 in our Volkswagen campervan with our two dogs – we got to see so much of Scotland and particularly loved Loch Ness.

True love

REAL WEDDINGS

Katie and Matthew’s geometric-themed wedding featured a rusty orange colour palette Images courtesy of Daniella Marinos Photography

K

atie and Matthew briefly met at an ice-skating rink a few years ago and then bumped into each other again during a night out with a mutual friend. The attraction was instant and after chatting some more, the pair went out on their first date – the rest is history! Matthew knew Katie was the one and decided to propose during a romantic walk. She says, “My parents were involved in the plan and asked me to walk my childhood dog, Ruby, because they were too busy – I thought nothing of it.” She adds, “We were walking down the canal, and Matt popped the question when we reached a bench, which happened to be where we sat on our first date.” Here Katie shares details about their special day... 39

We loved the grounds at Yeldersley Hall, as there are so many different areas to explore. Plus, the venue is offered on an exclusive basis at no extra charge!

We had a mixture of dried and fresh orange flowers to match our colour scheme. Our cake had orange flowers cascading down the side and a hexagon-shaped bottom tier to reflect our geometric theme.

We had a mixture of candles with geometric holders, table runners, and vases full of fresh flowers for the centrepieces.

Getting ready in the morning and the ceremony really stood out to us both.

I created all the stationery for the day, and I’m in the process of creating a website for my new business venture. 40

REAL WEDDINGS I picked a Bardot-style gown by Morilee and accessorised my look with earrings and a rosegold hairpiece.

The groom and groomsmen wore three-piece tweed suits with orange ties, pocket squares and buttonholes. The bridesmaids wore bespoke rusty orange dresses.

Matt’s best man couldn’t attend the wedding due to Covid-19 restrictions at the time. But he made a fantastic speech in advance, which was played on a projector screen – it made our day!

41

We decorated a hexagon-shaped archway with flower pieces, hanging geometric shapes and pieces of fabric.

We had hexagon-shaped place names, which doubled up as favours. Matt got very drunk and went to bed early, around 10 pm. He woke up top and tailing a bed with his dad and rang the doorbell to the bridal suite where my cousins and I were staying. He snuck in half-drunk while we laughed and got in the giant bed to talk and look at photos.

Our advice for other couples would be to stay organised. Create spreadsheets, label everything in advance and remain calm on the day.

CAKES

BIG-DAY BAKES Our experts share popular cake trends for 2022 weddings

C

Expect a higher price point if you’re opting for a complicated design with many details. Speak to your baker if you’re concerned, as they’ll be able to suggest ways to work around the budget while still capturing your vision. Here at Your East Midlands Wedding, we’ve asked some of the top bakers from around the region to share top cake trends and advice for weddings this year.

www.fieldphotographic.com

alling all cake lovers! This year is shaping up to become a popular time to tie the knot and will be full of glorious weddings with showstopping cakes. With so many fun flavours and designs, couples can get creative and wow their guests with some fantastic ideas. If you’re planning a big-day bake, consider different ways the cake can represent your wedding theme while keeping in mind your colour scheme – you’ll want everything to be cohesive throughout the day.

www.fieldphotographic.com

JULIA FLORENCE CAKE DESIGN Sarah Reilly says, “Our passion is to offer beautiful and elegant cakes that add the wow factor to weddings. It’s important to create something that looks and tastes amazing, so your guests will remember it for years to come. “Couples currently want something personal to them, designed around their theme and colour scheme to complement all aspects of their special day. We love creating dessert tables and cake towers for those wishing to achieve this. Both can be displayed in various ways, including modern and contemporary styles to elegant and classic or romantic and rustic. These different concepts are an excellent way to cater for all guests with so much variety to choose from. There’s always a beautiful sponge or fruit cake for our couples to cut traditionally, as well as stunning cupcakes, beautiful macarons, and personalised cookies to add that special touch for our lovebirds. We also offer mini brownies and blondies, meringue kisses, cake pops and even minicake jars for guests to take home. The possibilities with these ideas are endless, and we love creating something different for each pair to

complement their wedding perfectly.” Check out: www.juliaflorencecakedesign.co.uk 43

PATACAKE Stephanie Moore says: “Choosing a wedding cake while keeping in mind your style and budget can be overwhelming, but these top five trends for 2022 should give you some more food for thought. “Buttercream and semi-naked styles took the world by storm in 2021, and these designs are here to stay. Cakes with sharp edges, clean lines or a textured buttercream teamed up with florals make it easy to tailor cakes to any theme or colour scheme.

www.instagram.com/sophieatkinsphoto

“Flowers cascading down cakes or neatly bunched can dramatically impact any design. Whether opting for fresh florals, sugar flowers, dried blooms or even edible ones, guests won’t be able to keep their eyes off the bake.

“Acrylic tiers or separators are huge trends in 2022 and allow couples to add extra height to cakes at a fraction of the cost. It also gives a magical-floating effect while being more environmentally friendly than traditional dummy/ false polystyrene tiers. 44

“Earthy and neutral tones are taking over this year, with oaks, taupes and earthy greens taking centre stage. These hues look beautiful teamed up with pretty pastels, metallics or navy shades and will give you that insta-worthy cake. Pick out several colours and let the baker work their magic – you won’t be disappointed.

“Many brides are still after traditional white cakes, and Instagram and Pinterest are full of inspiration with light and bright romantic shades. Crisp white fondant with super sharp edges, lace and white sugar flowers will give you the ultimate, timeless and romantic style.” Check out: https://patacakecakes.uk

Wedding planning can be stressful, so be sure to make time for self-care and focus on your wellbeing TIME TO

reboot your sleep

Don’t underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep – it’s vital for fighting off tiredness, stress and winter bugs. But beware hibernation mode. It’s tempting to oversleep during dark winter months, but this can make you feel sluggish. Aim for around eight hours a night and try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day to encourage a healthy bedtime routine. Natural remedies such as Together Health’s Night Time Marine Magnesium Complex (£12.99, www.togetherhealth.co.uk) can also be hugely beneficial. A comforting calming blend of five natural forms of magnesium, it helps you feel rested and restored.

BUZZ BEAT THE WINTER BLUES

Suffering from a winter skin slump? One of the best ingredients to get your through it is hyaluronic acid, which has an amazing way of getting that missing glow and hydration back on track. Faye Purcell, product development chemist and skincare expert at Q+A says, “Being exposed to winter environments can cause the outer layer of skin to dry out, leading to irritation, flakiness and lack of radiance. Opting for a humectant like hyaluronic acid is vital as it draws moisture from the air into the skin. When it’s absorbed it can release that moisture directly into our cells and help retain it for longer.” Check out Q+A’s latest range focusing on this all-important ingredient, which includes a Hydrating Cleanser (£7.50), Face Mist (£6.50) and Facial Serum (£6.50). EDITOR LOVES

We’re all washing our hands a lot more often than we used to and while it’s super-important to keep that up, it does cause the skin to suffer. Frequent use of hand sanitiser too can compromise the skin’s microbiome, leading to dryness, roughness and signs of ageing. If these woes sound familiar, check out Mavala’s new Prebiotic Hand Cream. With a rich formula it offers immediate comfort to those with sensitive, delicate and dry hands. It contains 87 per cent natural-origin ingredients and offers the necessary nutrients to maintain the balance of microbiological activity of the skin. What I also love is that it doesn’t leave behind that annoying greasy residue that puts me off a lot of hand creams. It sinks in fast and my cuppa doesn’t slip through my fingers! It’s now a desk essential. You can find Mavala Prebiotic Hand Cream in leading pharmacies, priced at £16.

Until recently the best-kept secret in Paris, Odile is an exclusive skincare line carefully curated to provide maximum results with minimum effort. Sounds good to me! OR, j’etincelle caught my eye. A lightweight gel it contains a wealth of potent activators to revive tired and puffy eyes, while improving the appearance of fine lines and over time this delicate area should appear brighter. To use as a pre-wedding pamper treatment as an under-eye mask apply as a thick layer and leave for 15 minutes before wiping away to reveal instantly brightened and lifted results. It’s suitable for daily use too though – simply pat a small amount around the eye area morning and night. Find it at https://odile.co.uk, priced at £45. 61

BARBOUR FOR HIM £49 (50ml), £69 (100ml) www.barbour.com “I’d class this as a traditional male fragrance – woody and deep, it’s strong and distinctive. Certainly something I’d consider as a pre-wedding gift for the groom, father-of-the-bride or -groom.” – Stuart Weatherley

VICTOR & ROLF FLOWERBOMB £55.50 (30ml), £77.50 (50ml), £109.50 (100ml) www.thefragranceshop.co.uk “I’d heard rave reviews of Flowerbomb, particularly in the context of it being a perfect bridal scent. Warm and spicy with a touch of sweetness, the subtle nuances developed on my skin and the distinctive aroma lingered throughout the day with no need for top ups.” – Sarah Reeve

It’s a powerful punch of intoxicating fragrance, which softens throughout the day leaving an alluring aroma sure to grab attention. Its warming top and base notes mean it’s an ideal choice for winter nuptials.” – Danielle Harvey

JUSBOX SUIT OF LIGHTS €310 (78ml) www.jusboxperfumes.com “This perfume was inspired by Michael Jackson and if it’s good enough for the King of Pop, it’s good enough for me! You only need a little and it has great staying power.” – Rachel Westall

Q&A Our experts give their advice to help you look your big-day best

BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE Can you suggest a showstopping make-up look for my fabulous winter wedding? This time of year is perfect for ditching the fake tan and showing your natural beauty! Porcelain skin glows when applying a dewy foundation highlighted with powder contour and blush to define the cheekbones. An eyeshadow palette with natural nudes and sparkly bronze shades are ideal for creating classic and stylish looks. Getting a lash-lift treatment before the wedding is the perfect way to create volume and add colour to your natural lashes – you won’t have to worry about wearing waterproof mascara. When it comes to lipstick, it’s always nice to choose a colour you feel comfortable in for some added confidence on the day. Why not think about adding a high-shine gloss over the top of the lipstick? Before your wedding day, it’s a good idea to create a moodboard with looks and trends you like alongside a photo of yourself to compare your skin tone and eye colour. Don’t get stressed about your make-up. If you allow time to practice or ask your make-up artist to do a trial or two, then the experience will be enjoyable on the day! LOVE IS IN THE HAIR What is the most effective way to reduce frizz? If your hair is naturally frizzy, hot weather or rain will be a problem. Our number one treatment to help reduce frizz is a keratin smoothing treatment, a semi-permanent hair method that lasts three to six months. The service is gentle on hair, and you’ll still be able to create a curl. Here are a few other ways to stop frizz... ❤ Rinse your hair with cold water after washing to prevent the strands from over-drying. ❤ Invest in hydrating products. We use the L’Oréal Absolut Repair Nourishing Hair Serum, a lightweight product that smoothens the hair. ❤ Use a nourishing hair mask to help combat frizz by sealing in the moisture. ❤ Get rid of your old hairdryer, which can overheat and damage the hair cuticles. ❤ Let your locks air dry for as long as possible, and use a hairdryer on a medium heat once 80 per cent is dry. Finish with a shot of cold air to create a smooth and glossy finish.

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC Local experts offer stellar advice on wedding dilemmas

SPRING FEVER We’re getting married next spring and would like some shots that reflect the season. Do you have any suggestions? Spring is a fantastic time of year for weddings as it represents the rebirth of new beginnings – perfect to symbolise the start of your married life together. There are many options where the photoshoot location can take place, and you’ll get the opportunity to have some fantastic background colours from the early blooming flowers, including pansies, daffodils and tulips. You can pick from a local park, the grounds of a castle or even a

botanical garden. Just remember, the space should have plenty of bright colours such as greens, purples and whites to complement your photographs. Remember, it’s important to have a backup plan as the weather in the UK during this time of year can be very unpredictable. Have a chat with your photographer to make sure they know your preferred location; they might also have suggestions for other spots if the weather does decide to misbehave. Derek McAllister | Derek McAllister Photography www.derekmcallisterphotography.co.uk

THE GREAT OUTDOORS We’re planning to have an outdoor celebration, but I’m not sure where to start. Do you have any ideas? It’s important to establish where you want to get married when planning an outdoor wedding, whether that’s on a farm, field, beach or other location. Consider the time of year that the wedding’s taking place as seasonal weather might influence your day – getting married on a beach in January might prove a challenge. Once you’ve settled on a location, set yourself a budget for the wedding and research local venues that can host an outdoor wedding on their private land or allow you to use their facilities in conjunction with your preferred destination. The team will know the terrain plus climate and should provide some great advice, which can be particularly useful for an outdoor reception or a winter wedding as you’ll want to protect your guests from inclement weather.

Always check the weather forecasts in advance, and try to plan a backup location if a sudden change rules out your preferred destination. Hannah Kershaw | Black Pearl Weddings & Events https://blackpearlweddingsandeventsmidlands.co.uk 65

LOVE IS IN THE HAIR My hair suffers from breakage due to heat damage, and I’d love to get my healthy locks back. What would you suggest? It’s never too early to start getting your locks in tip-top condition for your wedding; the earlier you start, the better. Firstly, you can’t repair hair that’s already split or broken. Instead, book an appointment with a trusted stylist for a trim to take off any dead ends. Book regular sessions every 10 to 12 weeks to keep your hair healthy. Try and minimise the amount of heat-styling tools you use, and always use heat-protection spray when you do. It’s also important to use a goodquality shampoo and conditioner that suits your hair type and include a hair treatment weekly or every other week. Wash and towel dry your hair before applying a hair mask and brushing it through. Then wrap your locks in a warm towel for an hour before rinsing with cool water. Another game-changer is to use a leave-in treatment spray or oil. Apply the product to the ends of damp hair after every wash to protect the strands from everyday wear and tear. Finally, hair supplements are an excellent long-term way to get your hair to grow faster and stronger. Robyn Wood | Perfect Silhouette Hairdressing www.perfectsilhouettehairdressing.com

STORYBOOK SETTINGS We’re having a fairytale-themed wedding outside in a marquee, and we want everything to look magical. Do you have any suggestions of how we can decorate the space? Start by choosing your desired colour palette. To give the day a feminine fairytale style, opt for traditional hues of white and gold with touches of blush pink. Using gold cutlery, glass charger plates and gold-rimmed glassware will add a refined and elegant style to the tables, along with tall-gold candelabras filled with trailing foliage and blousy flowers. Lighting is an essential aspect to consider when creating the décor for a reception in a marquee. Adding an abundance of fairylights to the ceiling and outdoor spaces will create a magical atmosphere throughout the evening. Follow your theme through every element of your styling to create a cohesive look. Using a fairytale-style font on the wedding stationery with wording such as ‘once upon a time’ and ‘happily ever after’ will add to your magical theme. I’m so excited about our winter wedding, but I hate the thought of parting with my flowers. Is there anything you can suggest to help? Flowers play an integral role in celebrating your special day, and it would be lovely to treasure your precious blooms forever. One way to achieve this is to turn the florals into artwork using a botanical plaster cast. Using a special technique, you can capture and preserve the intricate detail of each flower to create a keepsake to decorate your home. Whether you choose to cast a single stem or a whole bouquet to assemble a large statement wall panel, couples can tailor this bespoke service to match any style in a choice of different shapes and sizes. By taking careful impressions from each flower, I can show all the beautiful textures of every petal and leaf. The final neutral-coloured piece can be left or hand-painted to match any colour scheme or interior décor. Clare Towers | The Foxglove Tree www.thefoxglovetree.co.uk

Let me eat cake!

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

A

s some of you may know, my fiancé and I are due to get married in July 2022 – eek! We got engaged on Christmas Day 2020 and have been eagerly counting down the months waiting for the big day to arrive. We’ve booked most of our suppliers and are just finishing up the last few things, so fingers crossed the next few months go smoothly! In this issue, read about our search for the perfect entertainment and wedding cake.

JUST ONE SLICE We’ve been going back and forth since getting engaged about having a wedding cake. Dave doesn’t have a sweet tooth, while I can’t get enough of anything smothered in chocolate! After talking to our family (who were all team cake by the way) we decided to get one made up of layers of lemon and chocolate – delish! I found an amazing cake company in An Essex Wedding, which I emailed to see if they could replicate a semi-naked design I’d fallen in love with. We originally wanted a two-tier

design, but with 110 guests in the evening, we were informed that we would need a three-tier design to cater for 80 per cent of the people attending, the bigger the better I say. During my research, I came across a company that creates personalised cake toppers that were oh-so-cute I just had to have one! Made from clay, the topper will be figures of us dressed in our wedding attire accompanied by a model of our beloved cat. We’ve been told that the big day will fly by in the blink of an eye, so we’re keen to get mementos of the day that we can treasure for years to come and this cake topper will certainly be going in the wedding box. We’re so excited to see it all come together, but I’m also slightly nervous since we won’t see the finished designs until the reception. I have complete trust in our suppliers, but the control freak in me wishes I could do everything myself to ensure it’s perfect – but what do I honestly know about making cakes or moulding clay cats? So I’ll be leaving it to the professionals!

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY

74

Dave and I couldn’t decide if we wanted to have a band or DJ for our evening entertainment and it’s such a big part of the reception we knew we had to get it right. I came across an agency in An Essex Wedding that provides hundreds of bands across the UK. We spent hours going through the acts within our budget, and we eventually decided on one we loved. As companies are getting booked up quite far in advance due to the pandemic, it turned out the band we wanted was unavailable. We felt quite disheartened, but the representative came to the rescue listing a few alternatives that were within our price range and offered a similar type of music – problem solved! We decided that a three-piece all-male band suited us perfectly; they will play three sets with a DJ in between to ensure our guests are

entertained all night long. Choosing songs is a lot harder than we anticipated. The band has asked us to choose 10 from their repertoire, 30 we want to appear in their DJ set and one for our first dance. Dave and I have a similar taste in music, but it’s quite overwhelming trying to find tunes that represent us as a couple that will also keep our friends and family happy. For our first dance, we wanted something a bit different, so we’ve chosen I Just Don’t Think I’ll Get Over You by Colin Hay. To try and help us narrow down the other options, we’ve asked our guests to leave song suggestions on our wedding website, which will hopefully help us give us some ideas! Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s outfits.

Here’s my moodboard to give you heaps of inspiration.

BRIDE’S DIARY

Sparklers are a lovely addition to any photo, and I can’t wait to take some pictures in the evening with them.

To tie in with our rustic theme, we want a log slice cake stand, but I’m struggling to find one big enough!

Who doesn’t love a flower arch? Our florist is going to provide a small version outside our wedding marquee.

I’ve purchased some cute bridesmaids’ robes for the girls to wear on the morning of the wedding while they have their hair and make-up done.

Generally, I’m not a massive fan of pearls, so I’ve surprised myself by choosing to wear them on the day.

I’ve finally decided on an up do with a gorgeous pearl hairclip and veil.

My bridesmaids and I are going shopping soon and are looking for floor-length A-line gowns with flowing sleeves.

Dave and I are going to pick suits in January and are leaning towards something casual and blue.

The bridesmaids are planning to wear comfortable block heels. 75

It’s accessed via a footbridge (after checking in at the Boat House on the mainland) and is home to luxury accommodation in a choice of 40 stylish bedrooms and The Wedgewood Suite commanding prime position in the original Temple building with wrap-around views. As the hotel’s grandest offering for newlyweds, this spacious Grade I listed suite boasts character features including the original Wedgewood blue ceiling with contrasting white friezes, a custom-designed bed with an upholstered headboard, a separate seating area and a walk-in closet with an exposed bath tub. The Barn Rooms, located off the island adjacent to the private residences, offer a great option for wedding guests equipped with marble en suite bathrooms and walk-in showers.

The Floating Spa By Spa Village is nestled in a tranquil spot moored on the banks of the river. It’s only open to hotel residents and the wellness journey starts the moment you step onboard with a choice of indulgent treatments. Ceremonies are held in the impressive River Room with its floor-to-ceiling windows revealing far-flung views of the river and idyllic surroundings. THEMED VENUES

with a statement botanical chandelier, mirrored panelling and doors leading to the manicured grounds hosts the wedding breakfast and reception, and both this and the River Room can be hired exclusively. There’s also the option of securing a marquee for up to 300 guests from the hotel’s list of preferred suppliers, and exclusive use of the entire estate can be booked. Bespoke options are also available bride arriving by boat? Of course! An outdoor gathering under a stretch tent? The talented team can make it happen.

A FOODIE HEAVEN At the heart of the hotel is The Monkey Island Brasserie, flanked by an outdoor terrace boasting waterway views, serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Couples passionate about food will love the relaxed, informal vibe and classic British dishes created using seasonal ingredients from local suppliers and the on-site herb garden (a stroll over to this is well worth it – spot the beehives and resident hens while you’re there, too!) On the dinner menu is a pan-fried fillet of chalk-stream trout served with salsa verdi and a butter aged 250-gram sirloin steak with Béarnaise sauce and hand-cut chips. The avocado toast served with a poached hen’s egg is the perfect fuel for the day at breakfast.

Those wishing to relax with an after-dinner drink can do so in The Monkey Bar where the Harrow & Hope Brut Reserve and Monkey Shoulder blended malt scotch whiskey are to be tried. For a cheeky late-night tipple, The Whiskey Snug, accessed via a secret staircase, is not to be missed, especially for the romantic view of the footbridge lit up at night.

WHAT’S NEW? The Shepherd’s Hideaway is nestled in a private spot in the grounds, decorated with contemporary countryside interiors. Memories can be made at this hand-crafted hut, with a celebratory afternoon tea or a gourmet picnic for between two and six guests that can be booked as an add-on to an overnight stay. Non-residents at the hotel are also welcome, perfect for visitors to the delightful village of Bray-on-Thames, where this island resides, to enjoy.
