COTSWOLDS HIDEAWAYS ANNOUNCE WOODLAND EXPERIENCES Cotswolds Hideaways and Cotswolds National Landscape have announced dates this spring for their popular rural skills and experience weekends set to take place locally across the regions, telling the story of the Cotswolds. Why not book a stay in a hand-picked Cotswolds Hideaways cottage, pictured, and make the most of a mini-moon in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty? The Call of the Wild - Woodland Experience involves gathering wood for a fire, log splitting with axes, charcoal burning and cooking a meal outdoors in a stunning Cotswold wood that was once part of the estate of Henry VIII. The dates are Sat 16th April, Sat 30th April, Fri 13th May, Sat 28th May, Fri 10th June and Sat 25th June 2022. A fossil hunt will reveal ancient sea creatures from the Jurassic period when the area was a warm tropical sea and those creatures are now encapsulated in the stone. Guests can even try their hand at fossil hunting and finders, keepers! Set in a stunning quarry off the beaten track, they’ll also get to see the lengths the quarrymen went to, even going underground. They can also experience dry stone walling, using the stone to make this iconic landscape feature. The dates are Fri 8th

April, Fri 22nd April, Fri 6th May, Fri 20th May, Fri 3rd June and Fri 17th June 2022. The one-day Foraging and Wild Foods Course will see guests try a range of seasonal wild foods while exploring the Cotswolds countryside, learning about some key principles of foraging, plus matters of safety, and a little about the laws regarding harvesting wild food. The two-day Dry Stone Walling Course will see participants building a wall that will remain part of the Cotswolds landscape for the next 100 to 200 years. They’ll learn about dismantling walls, stone sorting, laying foundations, building up the wall, adding and dressing the different types of stones and how to use the necessary tools. CONGRATULATIONS Paxton & Whitfield, the UK’s oldest cheesemonger with a store in Bourton on the Water is celebrating its 225th birthday this year and needs help from its customers! The company’s archives were destroyed in a fire at its Jermyn Street-based shop after World War II and its records were lost forever. This year the Paxton & Whitfield team is embarking on a project to piece together the cheesemonger’s heritage to mark this milestone birthday. The company is inviting customers with a memory, story, or photo from recent or past times to email history@paxtonandwhitfield.co.uk. For every story it publishes, it will plant a tree as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy project (https://queensgreencanopy.org). This is a unique tree-planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee this year which invites people from across the United Kingdom to plant a tree for the jubilee. James Rutter, managing director of Paxton & Whitfield, says, “We’re looking forward to hearing the memories and stories that our customers would like to share with us. From a small cheese stall in Aldwych, London to our internationally renowned business today, Paxton & Whitfield has always championed the best in artisanal British and Continental European cheeses. We’ve been through two World

Wars and have successfully adapted to countless changes in cheese and retail trends in more than two centuries of trading; including most recently the Covid-19 pandemic.” James continues, “We pride ourselves on the quality of the cheeses and fine foods that we retail, our customer service and the exceptional experience that we offer. As we go forward into this year of celebration for the company, we will be hosting unique anniversary experiences and launching some exclusive new collections, to commemorate this remarkable achievement.” To find out more, visit www.paxtonandwhitfield.co.uk

THE

WARDROBE WALLED GARDEN WEDDINGS

A newly launched wedding and events venue in the heart of historic Salisbury.

A marquee will be positioned in the beautiful garden (your choice of style) and we can accommodate up to 150 guests. For smaller numbers a reduced sized marquee is available.

The Wardrobe is a secret hideaway located to the rear of the Rifleman’s Museum. It is situated in the tranquil setting of the cathedral close and the wonderful garden leads down to the banks of the river Avon. With the rolling countryside beyond, it is difficult to imagine a better location within the Salisbury city limits for any outdoor event, be it a wedding reception, celebration or garden party.

The on-site caterer is the award-winning Vanilla Catering & Events. Vanilla’s key ethics are attention to customer service and the use of top quality local ingredients. These result in bright, modern food styles presented with attention to detail in an unfussy yet friendly manner. A bespoke menu is created for each client and a complimentary wedding planner is provided to run your special day.

The walled garden is totally enclosed and private covering over half an acre. It also has numerous specimen trees including one of the finest copper beach trees in Wiltshire.

An interesting fact: did you know why we are we called The Wardrobe? The original building on the site was constructed in 1254. It was rebuilt in the 15th century and was used to store the robes of the Bishop of Salisbury; hence it was known as the “Bishop’s Wardrobe” or “The Wardrobe”!

The walled garden can be privately hired for your wedding, party or event.

REGIONAL VENUES

SOUTH AND WEST GLOUCESTERSHIRE Images of Elmore Court courtesy of www.racheljonesphotography.co.uk

This exclusive-use wedding venue nestled in a private rural location is home to a Grade II listed country house and the magnificent Gillyflower ballroom. Recent developments have seen the appointment of a newly trained team and the first calves, lovingly named Wild One, Willow, Wren and Walter, have been born to the rewilding longhorn herd with seven more due shortly. Plans for treehouses to be built on the grounds mean that woodland weddings, treehouse stays and rewilding retreats will be available in early 2023. Couples who have previously married at the venue will be able to return for anniversary stays in these romantic retreats. Ceremonies take place in a variety of areas in the main house including in the hall. Dinner and dancing are enjoyed in The Gillyflower, a romantic space located in a separate building that can be styled to suit any wedding theme. It’s draped in fairylights and home to a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system.

We reveal where to wed in these pretty parts of the region

This former 17th-century hunting lodge is set in the heart of the idyllic Royal Forest of Dean and combines period charm with modern hotel and purpose-built wedding venue facilities. The manicured garden area provides a much-photographed stag statue and the hotel borders the 15-acre Speech House field that can be hired for outdoor games at celebrations held during the summer months. The Edwin Tauber Suite overlooking the Speech House field and the ancient woodland beyond is a picture-perfect setting for a party. The large bi-fold doors open out on to a covered terrace that leads to the hotel garden and beyond. This spacious and light purpose-built function suite has a bar and reception area offering plenty of space for up to 150 guests seated at dinner and dancing for up to 200 people. The ceremony can take place outdoors under the sheltered terrace with guests looking on while the suite can be laid out traditionally for the wedding breakfast with everyone seated at round tables or, for a more contemporary feel, long rustic banquet tables can be positioned in this flexible space. Alternatively, the historic Verderers’ Court provides a traditional setting for any celebration for between 50 and 70 guests. It’s steeped in history, from the hand-carved chairs to the open fireplace and beamed ceiling. The Carolean Room, named after the era of King Charles II, is ideal for smaller parties of up to 25 guests. This charming room is situated in the main part of the hotel and is decorated in a traditional country house style. The Orangery is a light and airy garden room available to hire exclusively for post-wedding drinks and canapés or as an extra space for the wedding party. It opens out on to a pretty garden and can be hired alongside the Edwin Tauber Suite, Verderers’ Court or The Carolean Room.

REVIEW

Get away from it all Kelly Andrews visited Tewkesbury Park, Gloucestershire’s haven of relaxed luxury

W

hether you’re looking for a place to wed or somewhere to minimoon, you’re in for a treat at Tewkesbury Park. As I wound my way up the long driveway to the hotel I already felt a sense of getting away from it all, and from its hilltop position among 165 acres of grounds the views are quite something to behold. COMFY AND COZY Impressed by the combination of stylish modern interior design and ample nods to the town’s heritage, I was welcomed to the Duke of Somerset suite where I’d spend the night. Settling down to enjoy a complimentary fruit plate I instantly made myself at home. Ninety-three comfortable rooms and suites are available to you and your guests once wedding celebrations draw to a close and are sure to see you all get a good night’s sleep. I’d highly recommend securing one of the Historic Suites for your wedding night or honeymoon. Complete with waterfall shower, roll-top bath and Hynos bed, they’ll ensure your stay is luxurious. What’s more they’re ideal spaces for your wedding morning preparations, offering plenty of space for you and your bride tribe to get ready in style, as well as a stylish backdrop for photographs. It’s also well worth checking out the incredible spa, which is partnered with the Natural Spa Factory of Bath and offers a range of treatments and packages. As well as indoor pool and steam room, there’s also an outdoor hot tub and barrel sauna, just perfect for some much needed relaxation at the end of a long day. DINING DELIGHTS The hotel’s main restaurant Mint offers an informal dining experience and a menu bursting with fresh, seasonal flavours produced using the finest local produce. I dined on a starter of chicken and spinach roulade with chorizo crumb, pea shoot salad and sweetcorn puree. This was followed by a main course of venison with a smoked pancetta cassoulet, butterroasted squash, picked fennel, rainbow chard and a dark chocolate jus, which was every bit as opulent as it sounds. I finished my meal with a chocolate fondant, coffee ice cream, cocoa nut tuille, caramelised banana and cocoa bean foam. So, you can get a feel for the sort of quality fare you’ll be served on your wedding day, whether you’re

looking for a traditional wedding breakfast or prefer the idea of a tasting menu. But you don’t need to take my word for it as the venue will invite you to a tasting experience with the head chef and his team, allowing you to create a menu to suit. I finished off the evening with cocktails in the modern and super-stylish lounge bar in front of the open fire. The Espresso Martini and After Eight were quite a treat! WHERE TO WED You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to ceremony spot, not least because the historical Tewkesbury Abbey is just a hop, skip and a jump down the road. Alternatively, you can choose to celebrate your entire day on site at the hotel. The Duke of Gloucester sits in the heart of the original 18th-century manor house and boasts an impressive bay window and crystal chandeliers. It can host up to 30 loved ones for intimate “I dos.” For a larger guest list of up to 150, the Cotswold Suite is the place to be. It can be divided if your numbers are somewhere in between though. The Cotswold Suite is also available for your reception allowing you to enjoy a drinks reception with canapés on the wraparound terrace and take advantage of the Berkeley Bar too. The space can accommodate 150 of your nearest and dearest, with plenty of room for a dancefloor. With a vast array of dining options for your evening guests you’ll be able to make sure that everyone is adequately spoiled. How about a Cotswolds picnic with homemade scotch eggs, quiches, scones and clotted cream; pizzas all round cooked in an outdoor wood-fire oven; or delicious barbecue fare, plus toffee apples and candyfloss?

SOMETHING SPECIAL What we love most are the winning finishing touches the venue goes the extra mile to offer, including... ♥ Plant your own rose in the scented garden, as a reminder of your special day. ♥ Hop on a golf buggy with your photographer to find a secluded spot for your couple shots. ♥ Take some time to chill as newlyweds seated on Mr & Mrs deck chairs, glass of bubbly in hand.

THE SCENIC SUPPER, COTSWOLDS

Cotswolds-based Toby Baggott and Sam Lawson-King are both highly experienced event planners and hospitality specialists. In July 2020, they opened the UK’s first socially distanced dining experience, The Scenic Supper, within seven re-conditioned glasshouses on a Gloucestershire hilltop. It quickly became the local must-visit dining venue with its incredible views, outstanding fine dining menus and exceptional cocktails, all served in a field on a Cotswolds farm. Following on from this success, Sam and Toby opened at Todenham Manor Farm near Moreton-in-Marsh in 2021 and again, this site was very well supported. The re-opened site at Todenham Manor Farm near Moretonin-Marsh from April 2022 offers pre-set menus for lunch and dinner served from Wednesday to Saturday until 24th September 2022. The fine-dining experience within nine bespoke, sustainably built, reconditioned glasshouses positioned to make the most of the incredible rural views are designed to blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Each glasshouse can seat two, four, six or eight diners. The transparency of each one means guests remain intrinsic to The Scenic Supper’s fun, relaxed, outdoor dining experience whilst enjoying the novel opportunity of their own intimate, private dining space. Each glasshouse is individually made from reinforced glass with charred timber finishes inspired by the ancient Japanese art of Shou Sugi Ban, to protect them from the elements without the need for harsh chemicals or paint and help them blend seamlessly into the landscape. They’re weatherproof but are located in an open field so diners are encouraged to dress appropriately for the conditions and blankets are offered to guests on cooler evenings. All dishes on the pre-set, seasonally changing four-course lunch and four or six-course dinner menus are prepared fresh each day from

the on-site kitchen housed within a converted shipping container. Highlights include award-winning, grass-fed rare breeds of beef and pork from Todenham Manor Farm’s herds, along with locally sourced poultry, lamb and game. Other outstanding and locally sourced fresh produce include bread by Mark’s Cotswold Bakery and ingredients from Drinkwaters Fruit and Veg and King Stone Dairy. There’ll also be homemade bread served at each sitting along with homemade chutneys, ice creams and sorbets. The Todenham Manor Farm site also features Scenic Supper founder Sam Lawson-King’s al fresco gin cocktail bar, creating delicious seasonal, cocktails made using his award-winning, artisan King Stone gin, homemade shrubs, cordials and mixers. Also available are Cotswolds sparkling wines, a small, well-curated wine list of Old and New World varieties (from £6.90 a glass and also available by the bottle) plus Cotswold Brew Company beers and Spinners Cider. The pre-set menus at Todenham Manor Farm offers a four-course lunch menu costing £55 per person, a four-course dinner for £55 per person or a six-course dinner menu for £65 per person (payable in advance). An optional cheeseboard costs an extra £10 per person and the pre-set menus ensure there’s very little food waste. Toby says, “Building on our success since launching in 2020, we’re excited about the Scenic Supper experience at Todenham Manor Farm. Diners tell us they still love the novelty of having their own intimate, dining space whilst enjoying incredible views and the outdoor restaurant setting and Todenham Manor Farm will continue to offer a very special place to drink and dine whilst looking out over some truly remarkable views within a working farm setting.” Contact: www.thescenicsupperevents.co.uk 21

There’s also carefully selected Cotswolds’ sparkling wines, a well-curated list of Old and New World wines and beers by Cotswold Brew Company and Hook Norton Brewery. ♥ Seasonally changing menus of modern British dishes with European touches created by head chef, Sam Idione. Dishes are

22

made using locally sourced produce in keeping with The Scenic Supper’s ‘Paddock to Plate’ ethos. All dietary requirements including gluten-intolerant and nut and dairy-free can be accommodated to suit individual needs. A seasonally changing vegetarian menu will also be available, and a vegan menu can be created on request. Head chef Samuel Idione started his training in classic French cuisine aged just 15 in Cornwall. He then went on work at Rick Stein in Padstow, The Clove Club, London and for two-Michelin star restaurant Patrick Jeffroy in France. He is well-known for his innovative ideas and contemporary twists on modern British and traditional French cooking to produce light dishes using the best quality local ingredients found as close to the restaurant location and the surrounding area as possible. Toby Baggott tells us, “Building on our success since launching in 2020, we’re excited about the launch of our parties and weddings service for which we plan to create truly wonderful and memorable experiences in the heart of the Cotswolds.” Toby continues, “Many of our Scenic Supper guests ask if it’s possible to have a Scenic Supper-catered wedding and we are looking forward to fulfilling this growing demand and putting to good use our pre-pandemic events experience, and contacts, to create something really special for them and a wider audience.” Contact: www.thescenicsupperevents.co.uk

annah and Declan met in 2014 at work. “I had transferred across from another store and Dec, thinking I was temporary staff for Christmas, took it upon himself to show me the ropes!” Hannah tells us. “He won me over with his cheeky personality and a few weeks later we started dating, much to our manager’s disappointment! We had to be separated at work because neither of us got much done!” The couple became engaged on holiday in Fuerteventura on 20th July 2019. “We enjoyed a walk along the beach after dinner and there, in front of the sunset was where he proposed!” Hannah says. “It was a big surprise although I should’ve seen it coming because there were some tell-tale signs!”

SETTING THE SCENE The couple chose Stonehouse Court Hotel in Gloucestershire as their wedding venue. “We loved the mix of classic and modern touches that it offered,” Hannah tells us. “We wanted to host our entire day in one venue and Stonehouse Court Hotel had a variety of options with more than one room licenced for

ceremonies. The catering was taken care of and we adored the photo opportunities in the pretty grounds, for example, the view of the canal at the back of the hotel.” The couple wanted their decorative touches to be meaningful and personal to them so they designed the stationery including the invitations, place cards and seating plan themselves. “Dec is fantastic at graphic design so he was able to create exactly what we wanted,” Hannah tells us. “One of our bridesmaids provided the illustrations for the order of the day and because we originally had our heart set on having a spring wedding, we chose a pastel pink and blue floral design. This was carried through in every detail from the napkins to the ribbons on the vases for our centrepieces. The cake was made by my talented mum, Fiona and sister, Abby which fitted the theme beautifully. It tasted delicious and was finished with some fresh flowers.”

LOOKING THE PART Hannah chose a stunning wedding dress by Maggie Sottero. “I wasn’t initially sure that I

wanted a fitted gown but when I tried it on, I loved it!” she tells us. “The detail and beading sparkled beautifully and my mum’s reaction to it was what sealed the deal! I chose a full-length sheer veil so that you could see the back of the dress through it.” Dec wore a three-piece navy suit with a subtle check print. “The other groomsmen wore two-piece versions and they all had matching pale pink ties the same colour as the bridesmaids’ dresses finished off with a vibrant pink rose buttonhole,” Hannah explains. The bridesmaids wore pale pink full-length dresses which suited them perfectly. “It could’ve been a bit tricky to get all six to agree on a style but it turned out to be a dream!” Hannah says.

REAL WEDDINGS

TIME TO ENTERTAIN Hannah and Dec had to change their plan regarding their wedding entertainment because their celebration took place while restrictions were in place due to the pandemic. “Luckily, we were blessed with sunshine so most of our reception and evening party took place outside,” Hannah explains. “We had lawn games including rounders which was such a hit with our guests!” The first dance was very special because Hannah and Dec got their bridesmaids and mother-of-the-bride to join in a flash mob, finishing with the other guests learning the steps and joining. “We couldn’t stop smiling as we watched everyone enjoying themselves,” Hannah tells us. “The speeches were also very special. Before the wedding, my younger brother Matt asked whether he could make a speech which we were excited about - he had so many lovely things to say.” The couple booked to go on honeymoon to Dubai and the Maldives through travel consultant Stephanie Chipping. “She was fantastic about booking (and rebooking) our dream trip,” Hannah says. “We described what we wanted and she has made it happen. We just can’t wait!”

“I don’t think either of us can put into words how special the day was for us. People always say that your wedding is the best day of your life but I don’t think we quite appreciated this until it happened! The celebration was brimming with love and laughter.” – Hannah and Dec

REAL WEDDINGS

The stunning Elmore Court in Gloucestershire was the beautiful backdrop for Hayley and Callum’s big day decorated with blush pink, grey and neutral colours with a nod to the Glastonbury Festival Images courtesy of Courtney Marie Photography

H

ayley and Callum met at Glastonbury Festival. “We had a mutual friend who introduced us and we got on well,” Hayley tells us. “Callum took my number and our relationship blossomed from there!” Callum proposed on 23rd June 2019 at Glastonbury Festival as a nod to the place where the couple met. “We queued for almost three hours to get in and after putting our tent up, we went for a walk,” Hayley says. “Callum took me to the pyramid stage and asked a group of people if they would take a photograph of us and as one of them did, he proposed! I was in shock but it was the most amazing feeling. When we arrived home, Callum had arranged for our family to celebrate with us - it was the most amazing proposal.” Here, Hayley tells us all about their big day styled with a blush pink, grey and neutral colour theme.

Hayley and Callum Gardiner married on 25th June 2021 at Elmore Court in Gloucestershire.

When we first viewed Elmore Court, we fell in love with it. Not only did the wonderful team make us feel so welcome and excited for our wedding day but we loved the mix of old and new that the venue offered. The mano r house where ceremonies are held offers a traditional feel in comparison to the Gillyflowe r which is the contemporary event space. It’s stunning and offers everything that you need for a good party which was important for us!

We both felt all sorts of emotions on the day but were mostly so happy that we could celebrate with all of our loved ones. I remember feeling nervous to walk down the aisle and overwhelmed with emotion but once I had done it, I was just so excited to celebrate!

Before our guests headed into the Gillyflowe r, the team took us in first to look at the space and enjoy a drink and some canapés. This was such a nice touch becau se we got to spend ten minutes together just the two of us to take it all in.

We named our tables after the different stages at Glastonbury. One of our suppliers designed our table pla n to look like a Glastonbury sign in our chosen colour scheme. She did an amazing job and it’s suc h a beautiful keepsake! 36

Kayleigh and Tom’s celebration at Matara enjoyed a natural theme decorated with neutral colours Images courtesy of Imogen Eve Photography

Kayleigh Buck and Thomas (Tom) Davies married on 23rd August 2021 at Matara near Tetbury in Gloucestershire.

41

K

ayleigh and Tom met on Tinder six years ago. “I pulled out of our first date but then decided to take a chance and we quickly arranged another!” Kayleigh tells us. “We visited the BST Hyde Park to see Mumford & Sons and Wolf Alice perform which was fantastic, we had a great time and the rest is history! Tom is very outgoing and chatty whereas I’m a bit quieter so we balance each other perfectly.” The couple became engaged during a surprise proposal in Venice. “I’ve always wanted to go to Venice so we took the chance to visit just after the lockdown lifted,” Kayleigh tells us. “Apparently it had never been so quiet! We headed over to the island of Murano to enjoy lunch along the canal before taking in the view of the Venetian Lagoon. Tom nervously pulled a red heart-shaped vintage ring box from his pocket that he had been carrying all day and inside was his grandmother’s Welsh gold ring. I was stunned and said ‘yes’ as he breathed a sigh of relief - I can’t believe that I didn’t notice the box in his pocket all day!”

SETTING THE SCENE The couple visited four venues before they viewed Matara. “We met the owner, Geoffrey who showed us around the Asian-inspired, exclusive-use venue and its vast gardens,” Kayleigh tells us. “As soon as we arrived, I welled up with tears and just knew that it was the place for us to get married, it was beautiful. Geoffrey has worked hard to make it a relaxing and peaceful environment with oriental influences from his travels. We loved the rose garden and wild meadows - we had wanted something a bit different and this venue offered it.” Kayleigh and the couple’s son stayed at the venue overnight and her bridal party arrived in the morning with breakfast and bubbles. “I managed to keep my emotions in check until we arrived at the ceremony where I had to take a moment before walking through the archway,” she tells us. “Our son took my hand and helped me down the steps. I wasn’t sure if he would have the courage to walk me down the aisle but he was the perfect little gentleman who was as excited as I was! We walked down to the song Baby It’s You by London Grammar. Tom and I had written our vows which added a personal and meaningful touch. We each chose a reading too with mine being an extract from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin by Louis de Bernières while Tom chose A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway. Hearing Tom say his vows was an emotional moment and our guests loved watching me pull out a hidden handkerchief from the bust of my dress!” The couple chose a natural theme using neutral colours with the flowers being the main focal point of their décor. “The area where our wedding breakfast was held has a beautiful dome in the centre and I knew that a flower cloud would look stunning suspended from it,” Kayleigh tells us. “I found a local florist, Emma from Thistle by Nature who understood the look that I was trying to achieve and her work was outstanding. I wanted a mix of dried flowers and grasses so that I could keep them afterwards. There are now several vases around our home displaying the flowers which is a wonderful reminder of our special day. Emma also created three meadow boxes that framed the ceremony beautifully in the courtyard.” For their tables, Kayleigh and Tom wanted to keep the design simple by draping fabric runners topped with a mix of candles and foliage running down the centre. “I chose the fabric from a local shop and spent a week making the table runners and the napkins with my mother-in-law-to-be,” Emma tells us. “It was wonderful to spend some quality time together and the result was better than we expected! Each table was named after our favourite places and each place name was attached to a menu.” 42

The food and wine were really important to the couple. “We both love cooking and going out for dinner and I spent 10 years working for Laithwaites, the wine company so we sourced and paired the wine ourselves opting for a Portuguese red variety and a delightful Picpoul de Pinet. The food by the kitchen team at Matara was outstanding and all of the produce was locally sourced and organic. Our guests had three choices of scallops, arancini balls and ginger panna cotta.” Kayleigh and Tom chose a three-tier wedding cake. “Two of the tiers had a light coconut sponge with a zesty lime buttercream,” Kayleigh tells us. “Our son chose the chocolate middle tier and the result tasted delicious.”

REAL WEDDINGS

LOOKING THE PART Kayleigh chose a strapless dress with a soft lining and an ivory lace overlay by the designer Justin Alexander. “It was similar to the Berta designer wedding dresses I had been lusting over and my bridesmaids loved it!” Kayleigh explains. “It was being discontinued the following month and we were also going back into lockdown so I made a quick decision to purchase it. I also purchased a mini shift dress decorated with sequins that I could change into for the evening and can wear to parties in the future.” Kayleigh wore a gold chain necklace and Tom gifted her a pair of pearl earrings which she opened on the day of her wedding. “My shoes were cream strappy stilettos by the designer Jimmy Choo which I wore around the house for weeks before the big day to break them in which I would recommend to any bride!” Kayleigh had been growing her hair for a year leading up to the wedding so that she could wear it up with a cathedral-length veil but because she had chosen a strapless dress, she decided at the last minute to have it cut into a bob. “I wore it down and wavy which I felt was a reflection of me and which suited our laid-back summer wedding theme,” she tells us. Tom wore a pale-green suit with a natural-coloured waistcoat featuring mother-of-pearl buttons and a silk lining. “Our son wore the same suit with a similar colour waistcoat and they looked very handsome together!” Kayleigh says. “Tom’s handmade English shoes added the final finishing touch. I wanted the groomsmen to wear a contrasting suit to Tom’s so we decided on the same style in grey with neutral-coloured waistcoats. I wanted to ensure that the groomsmen had a suit they could wear again in future.” The couple’s two bridesmaids, Susie and Rhian and their maid-of-honour, Rachel choose dresses that they loved in the chosen colour theme. “The result was gorgeous, each one looked stunning and the colours worked perfectly,” Kayleigh says.

TIME TO ENTERTAIN The couple had three DJ sets throughout the day to entertain their guests. “The first set was played before the ceremony, the second one was after the ceremony during the welcome drinks in the garden and the final set was played during the evening,” Kayleigh says. “We made sure that the music in the evening suited everyone but the last hour focussed on house music. It was such a special moment being able to dance with our loved ones after a tough year of lockdowns.” The couple welcomed children at their wedding with bubbles, colouring books and toys to keep them entertained. “Our son is a keen footballer so we made sure that football was available!” Kayleigh says. 43

"Stay true to yourself - Instagram and social media are great for inspiration but the endless scrolling can be time-consuming and doesn't always reflect reality. Planning a wedding should be fun! When it feels overwhelming or stressful, take a break and remember why you're doing it." – Kayleigh and Tom

HOT TOPIC Our menswear experts answer your big-day questions

ACCESSORIZE ALL AREAS

Please can you give us some ideas for styling the groomsmen’s suits? Meet the expert: Helen King is the owner of Blue Eyes Bow Ties, an independent business based in Melksham, Wiltshire. Helen creates luxury men’s accessories including bow ties, pocket squares and cufflinks featuring unique and striking limited-edition designs using high-quality materials. There are more than 250 styles to choose from and Helen can provide a custom design service. Blue Eyes Bow Ties won the coveted Small Business Sunday award from Theo Paphitis, renowned entrepreneur and ‘dragon’ from the hit BBC TV show Dragons’ Den. Helen says: I place a strong focus on wedding bow ties that are a trendy way to incorporate the latest looks into your day and also tie in the outfits with your chosen theme. For weddings this year, my silver silk bow tie is very popular because silver adds a dash of sparkle. Nature is another big influence for weddings in 2022 and my wildflowers-printed bow tie adds a natural, whimsical feel. My stunning lilac silk bow tie is inspired by Pantone’s 2022 colour of the year, Very Peri. It’s rich and decadent and makes the perfect accent colour. The spring floral bow tie featuring dusty pink florals against vibrant blues also incorporates hints of Very Peri. Alternatively, the blue floral bow tie that I have added to the collection is inspired by the colour schemes of Bridgerton boasting regency blue tones. 56

The traditional black silk bow tie is ideal for an elegant formal black-tie wedding and will always be in style. Blue Eyes Bow Ties | www.blueeyesbowties.com www.facebook.com/blueeyesbowties www.instagram.com/blueeyesbowties1

EXPERT ADVICE

When should the groom get photographed on the morning of the wedding? Meet the expert: Libby Clark is a wedding, family and boudoir photographer based in Devizes, Wiltshire offering intimate and emotive documentary-style photography. Libby says: Your wedding day is a story and, like every story, there are two sides to it. It’s common for me, as the photographer, to focus on the bride’s story; having her hair and make-up done, putting on her dress and capturing the reactions to her finished look but what about the groom? It’s his day too! Whilst it may not take as long, the groom is still busily preparing for his upcoming nuptials. He and his groomsmen can usually be found sorting out the suits, working out how to attach a buttonhole and adding final details to the speeches, often while whisky is being passed around to calm the nerves and there’s always one groomsman who is still in bed less than one hour before they need to leave! To tell the entire story of your day, I would advise getting the groom preparations photographed - they’re just as much fun for the bride to look through as the bridal prep is for the groom. Sometimes the groom is happy to suggest you get on with booking suppliers by yourself. For some things that’s fine, but for booking for your wedding photographer I would suggest you both meet them together because they are the one supplier you’re going to spend much of your day with. They’ll be with you whilst you’re getting ready, throughout the ceremony and for the couple portraits so it’s really important that you like them. You need to make sure that you gel with them before the day so arrange to meet them in person or over a zoom call. We all have different

#TRENDING

We want celebrity-inspired, Insta-worthy wedding suits, what can you suggest? Meet the experts: Slater Menswear is a gentlemen’s outfitter offering a large selection of men’s wedding suits and accessories with a store on The Promenade in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. The suit experts at Slater Menswear took a list of the top 100 richest male celebrities in the world and ran their names through Google to establish which suited iconic celebrities people wanted to dress like the most. Conor McGregor’s suits came in at number one with 17,000 searches. In second and third place were Chris Evans and Cristiano Ronaldo, with 2,100 searches respectively. By far the most-searched-for male style icon, you can achieve the modern look synonymous with the Irish Mixed Martial Arts fighter

personality types, and if you love their work but one of you finds them hard to get on with, it’s ok to keep looking for the right photographer for you both. Does your groom hate having his photo taken and was quite happy to not have a photographer at all? Book a pre-wedding shoot so that you can both learn how your photographer works ahead of the big day. It’s helpful for the photographer too because every couple is different. What might work for one couple doesn’t necessarily work for the next and the pre-wedding shoot means that can all be worked out beforehand. Libby Clark Photography | 07835 936 885 www.libbyclarkphotography.co.uk www.facebook.com/libbyclarkphotography www.libbyclarkphotography Conor McGregor by combining the ONESIX5IVE skinny-fit, navy pinstripe three-piece suit by Slater Menswear with their textured pink silk tie. The deep hues of navy contrasted against the pop of colour from the tie will ensure true McGregor style. Keep the waistcoat on for a more formal look, or opt for something a bit more casual with a twopiece suit. Nothing says well dressed like a classic black suit and tie combo. A nod to the true gentleman, get this classic suited look inspired by Captain America himself, Chris Evans. Slater Menswear’s sleek Fellini Traveller regular-fit, two-piece suit works best when teamed with a plain woven black tie for an effortlessly elegant look. Style up a sleek and modern look inspired by football legend Christiano Ronaldo with a slick black tuxedo. By matching the Ventura slim-fit, two-piece dinner suit with a boxed black bow tie from Slater Menswear, you’re sure to stand out in classic style. Finish the look with a pair of Charles Southwell black patent square-toe dress shoes that are bold enough to make a statement.

HERE’S THE TOP 10: 1.Conor McGregor - 17,000 searches 2.Chris Evans - 2,100 searches 3.Cristiano Ronaldo - 2,100 searches 4.Chris Hemsworth - 1,900 searches 5.Drake - 1,800 searches 6.BTS - 1,800 searches 7.Brad Pitt - 1,300 searches 8.Ryan Reynolds - 1,100 searches 9.Leonardo Dicaprio - 1,100 searches 10.Lebron James - 1,000 searches

Here come the girls County Wedding Magazines senior editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

I

can’t believe that in just a few months time I’ll officially become Mrs Cullen – eek! Dave and I have been engaged since Christmas Day 2020 and are due to get married this July. With all of the uncertantity surrounding COVID-19 restrictions, it’s been quite a stressful journey. However, now that the date is drawing closer I’m finally starting to feel excited. In this issue, read all about my experience going shopping for the bridesmaids’ dresses.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

a Monday when it was quieter and I’m so glad we did! The consultant was absolutely lovely and couldn’t do enough for us. She made Kelly feel amazing and we didn’t feel pressured at all. With no time constraint, Kelly was able to try on every dress that caught her eye – it was a struggle to choose just one, she looked and felt stunning in them all. She eventually chose the same dress as Olivia, and in my humble (non-biased) opinion, they all look fabulous and I can’t wait to walk down the aisle with my beautiful friends. Overall, shopping together was a nice experience and it was great spending time with the girls, but I’d definitely recommend that fellow brides-to-be start shopping for dresses sooner rather than later – particularly if you have got quite a few bridesmaids! I also can’t stress enough to avoid popular visiting times at your chosen boutiques. It will create a completely different experience and ensured everyone feels relaxed and can enjoy it. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the groomsmen’s outfits and a last-minute videographer.

Choosing who I wanted to be my bridesmaids was one of the easiest decisions I had to make. My sister-in-law, Nolwenn, has been part of the family for a few years now and I really wanted to involve her in our day, so I was pleased when she wanted to be one of my bridesmaids! I also asked my two best friends and fellow County Wedding Magazines editors, Kelly and Olivia, who were over the moon when I asked them (virtually) during one of the many lockdowns. With the easy bit done, we were on to the task of choosing their bridesmaids’ dresses. With conflicting schedules and unpredictable restrictions it was hard to decide on a date that worked for everyone but we were eventually able to book an appointment for the beginning of December 2021. Shopping for their outfits was one of the things I was most excited about when we got

engaged. I love all the girls dearly and really wanted them to feel special and a part of our big day, so making sure that they were comfortable was my number one priority. I wanted them to choose their own style and the only thing I asked was that all the dresses were sage green, which worked out perfectly as the girls all love that colour – it was meant to be! We booked a Saturday appointment and oh my gosh it was busy! The girls had to share a changing room and only managed to try on a handful of dresses before our time was up. What shocked us all was just how long the dresses take to come into the store. Starting our shopping eight months early we all thought we’d have plenty of time to shop around, but we found that all of the gowns wouldn’t be in the store until early May 2022, which would only leave us with two months for alterations – this of course, sent my stress levels through the roof! Despite all of the craziness and the insane amount of people in the boutique, Olivia and Nolwenn both managed to find their dresses on that first visit; Nolwenn opted for a sleeveless A-line gown and Olivia chose a similar style but with floaty off-the-shoulder straps. Kelly and I both felt overwhelmed by the first appointment, and sadly she came away empty handed, so we decided to go back on

Here are some things that we’ve learned during wedding planning.

BRIDE’S DIARY

VENUE

PHOTOGRAPHER

❤ Make sure a registrar or celebrant is available on your wedding day before confirming with the venue. ❤ Find out what is and what isn’t included in the booking price. ❤ Check whether your venue has any sound limiters or a curfew in place. ❤ Ensure the venue has liability insurance in case the worst was to happen. ❤ How will the venue handle poor weather or last-minute changes? ❤ Before booking, check the venue’s COVID-19 policies.

❤ If like me, you’re nervous or unsure in front of the camera book a prewedding shoot – it really does make a difference. ❤ Before booking, decide on what style of photography you like and set a budget. ❤ Lots of photographers don’t have prices stated on their website; find five you like and email them all asking for quotes so that you can compare. ❤ Find out how many images you’ll be receiving and how long your photographer will spend with you on the day. ❤ Most suppliers will require a meal, so factor that into your catering budget and check if they have any dietary requirements. ❤ You’ll be spending a large portion of the day with your photographer, so it’s important you get on well, and they make you feel relaxed.

FLOWERS ❤ Some flowers are seasonal and may not be available at the time of year you’re getting married, so be prepared to discuss this with your florist. ❤ Your supplier will have a wealth of knowledge and will be able to advise you on what blooms will suit your day. ❤ Check your quotes include VAT. ❤ Think carefully about if you’d like real or dried flowers. If you’re unsure it may be worth talking to a few different companies to discuss the pros and cons. ❤ Your florist should suggest ways you can save money, for example, re-using blooms from your ceremony for the reception. ❤ There are so many ways that you can preserve your flowers after the wedding, so it’s worth looking at your options.

WEDDING DRESS ❤ Try on a variety of styles to find what best suits your shape. ❤ Trust your bridal consultant and listen to their recommendations, after all, they’re the experts. ❤ Choose a dress that you feel comfortable in and makes you feel like the best version of yourself. ❤ Wear white or skin-coloured underwear to your appointment. ❤ Start shopping nine to 12 months before the wedding to ensure you have plenty of time to get the gown in-store and alterations to be done. ❤ The shopping process can be daunting, so don’t feel pressured to purchase a dress for the sake of it, when you find the right gown, you’ll know it. 59

Award-winning haircare brand, Innersense Organic Beauty, has launched Serenity Smoothing Cream (£24), a nutrient-rich formula suitable for all hair types delivering a flawless and bouncy blow dry with a sleek look. Baobab and frangipani help to lock in moisture, as well as providing care for hair exposed to heated styling tools and strengthening strands without weighing them down. A GROWER, NOT A THROWER

Recycling in the beauty industry is notoriously difficult, but here’s a clever invention by award-winning eco-pencil company Sprout World, designed not only to reduce waste, but to give something beautiful and useful back to the planet – recycling at its finest I have to say! Introducing Sprout Makeup Pencils (£9.95), the world’s first zero-waste plantable make-up pencils. Yep, plantable! Just use as normal and instead of throwing them away when they become too small to use, flip them around, stick the end into a pot of damp soil and ta-da – beautiful, bee-friendly wildflowers will start to sprout within 1-2 weeks. Check out www.sproutworld.com

CHILLED-OUT SKIN

Adaptogens have been used for thousands of years in ancient Chinese medicine and ayurvedic remedies to help mitigate the effects of stress on the body, and until recently have mostly been used in herbal supplements and teas to regulate stress levels. But they could also offer the solution to stressed-out skin. MARA Volcanic Sea Clay Detox Masque (£48) contains aswagandha, a skin-strengthening herb and adaptogen powered by antioxidants, which works to fight free radicals, boost hydration and soothe stressed-out, blemish-prone skin. Find it at www.cultbeauty.co.uk

Q+A VITAMIN C BRIGHTENING SERUM £9 (30ml), www.qandaskin.com “This product absorbed quickly and left my skin soft and silky in minutes. In just two days use, morning and night, my blemish-filled complexion had begun to clear and a soft glow had taken hold. OLE HENRIKSEN DEWTOPIA 20% ACID NIGHT TREATMENT £49 (30ml), www.boots.com “I’m thrilled with this night serum. Each morning I wake up and feel a difference to my skin. Q&A

EXPERT ADVICE

Our experts reveal all

THE MANE EVENT How do I schedule my appointments leading up to my wedding day and when should I have my hair coloured? Blushes Brides images courtesy of https://jadetouronphotography.com

Meet the expert: Isla Cordery is a wedding hair specialist at Blushes Cheltenham, a leading hair salon located at 16-17 Montpellier Walk.

Hair by Alison Adams and Martene Mallett at www.modehair.co.uk; photography www.richardmilesphotography.co.uk; make-up www.roseannavelin.com; styling http://magdalenajacobs.com

Isla says: Alongside the dress and make-up, wedding hair is right up there with some of the top priorities for brides planning their big day – it completes your look and contributes to making you feel your very best. Once you’ve had your trial and are happy, it’s best to have your hair coloured the week before the big day to ensure that it looks fresh and vibrant, while still allowing time for any colour adjustments that might be needed. With the amount of planning and organising brides have to look after on the run-up to the wedding, the team at Blushes Cheltenham like to make sure that hair is one thing they don’t have to worry about! Taking time out to come and visit us for an appointment provides the perfect opportunity to relax and be pampered in what can be a busy, and sometimes anxious time.” My bridesmaids all have different ideas when it comes to their hair, what can I suggest for them all? Meet the expert: Martin Crean is the owner of MODE Hair, a luxurious salon located in Chipping Campden. Martin says: Long hair doesn’t have to be pulled back into a bun or chignon, your bridesmaids can wear it half up, half down, or mirror your hairstyle. If you’re looking for something that ties the entire look together, accessories have been a big trend in recent years, from bejewelled headbands to sparkling slides, there’s a vast array to choose from and plenty of inspiration from celebrities who have recently worn them on the red carpet. On long hair that is softly waved, gently secure it back on one side and use two or three slides to decorate the hair behind the ear. A single, beautiful slide also looks great on short hair. If you’re feeling brave then use gold leaf or stencilling to make a statement on short hair. Gold and silver look great, or pick out a colour from your bouquet. Alternatively, a headband with flowers or jewels looks great on long or short hair.

ESTAMINE Possibly the Algarve’s best kept secret – an incredible restaurant located on Isla Deserta, only accessible by boat. Few places come close to this family-run gem, where you can enjoy fresh fish and seafood along with other Algarvian specialities on your very own deserted island with 360 degree ocean views. When seen from above, the restaurant itself takes the shape of a crab among the sand dunes, an architectural tribute to their neighbours scuttling along the shoreline. Clams ‘Bulhao Pato-style’, prawns, deep fried in a delicious secret spice and its charcoal grilled catch of the day, simply can’t be beaten. Visit: www.ilhadeserta.com/estamine-restaurant

BOVINO Bovnio Steakhouse can be found within Quinta do Lago itself and serves some of the finest steaks and wines around along with an apothecarythemed cocktail menu. The seafood is exquisite too and don’t forget to add a side of triplecooked chips or mac‘n’cheese. Visit: www.quintadolago.com/en/restaurants/bovino-steakhouse
