an you believe we’re now into summer already? Sure, I’m looking forward to longer days, sunny conditions and barbecues with friends, but above all I’m excited about the triumphant return of weddings. And boy, have you all waited long enough! I can’t wait to see how your plans come to life and can see big days being even more celebratory than they previously were, if that’s even possible. We’ve all developed a deeper appreciation for the finer things in life over the past 18 months, love being chief among them, and to see it taking centre stage once more is something I’m thrilled about. So, as soon as Boris gives the green light, grab your loved ones, hug them as tight as possible and party like it’s 1999! And, when you’ve done that, don’t forget to head over to www.yourkent.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding and tell us all about it, so we can spread the joy. If there’s one thing I do know, it’s that as giddy as you are at the prospect of finally going ahead with your well-deserved dream day, your suppliers will be every bit as cock-a-hoop to be getting back to what they love. They can’t hide their lights under a bushel for long, so as usual; this issue is about showcasing what they do best. I’ve rounded up my highlights for you across these two pages, so dive in to make sure you don’t miss a thing. Enjoy and keeeep planning!
Although their plans to get married in Ibiza fell through when the country went into lockdown, Jade and George were still able to enjoy some brilliant sunshine as their rescheduled Kent wedding fell on the hottest day of the year. If you’re looking for something local to raise a toast with at your wedding, it might interest you to know that Mereworth Wines bases its choice of vineyard plantings on compatibility with the climate, soil and topography; and that all of these factors lend themselves perfectly to the very three grape varieties used to make exceptional English Sparkling Wine. Chardonnay vines account for over half of the vineyard and you’ll be able to enjoy their fruits in the form of Mereworth’s White From White. The Pinot Noir grape contributes to the new Sparkling Rosé and is the real backbone that gives it body and structure. With its thin skin resulting in a naturally delicate colour, Pinot Noir is particularly suited to cooler climates and thanks to improvements in the weather and vineyard management over the years Kent wineries are now giving France some competition. This variety brings distinctive aromas of red berries as well as flavours of cherries, elderberries and blackberries. The third and perhaps least well-known in the trio of sparkling wine grapes is Pinot Meunier. Only four per cent of Mereworth’s vineyard is given over to this variety, but that doesn’t detract from the fact that it’s an essential and versatile component. Adding bright acidity, deep fruitiness and a roundness of flavours, these grapes impart stone fruit flavours with hints of honey, walnut and coffee developing as the wine ages. So, now you know your grapes it’s time to try them for yourselves. Mereworth Wines’ 2018 White From White and its 2019 Sparkling Rose are both available at www.mereworth.co.uk where you can order for collection or delivery.

STORY OF US
Not only has Maidstone-based JP Photographic extended its £200 Covid discount until the end of 2021, but it’s now added an extra bonus. The team are kindly offering to prepare a movie that can be played during your reception depicting the two of you from birth to engagement. This largely depends on the material you’re able to supply, so why not make the most of this fab opportunity? Material can include photographs, both digital and printed, movie clips and anecdotes. Typically the film will consist of childhood memories following your journeys up to the point you met each other and became engaged – its intended to be screened before the first dance or during the wedding breakfast. JP Photographic will also expertly produce a movie of the big day itself. For a chance to chat to the team in person, why not pop along and meet them at West Heath Wedding Fair in Sevenoaks on Sunday 24th October? Also check out http://jpphotographic.zenfolio.com

wedding breakfasts through to barbecues and hog roasts. You have a choice of two wonderful outside areas to say “I do.” The Topiary Garden Gazebo is surrounded by the beautiful gardens and can play host to 200 loved ones, and the Orchard Garden Gazebo, with space for 100 of your nearest and dearest, can be found among the orchards and natural woodland. Both of these spaces are backed up by an indoor area if the weather takes a turn for the worse. The venue also offers twilight ceremonies, which are held in the newly converted Apple Barn, with the option to use a gazebo for an outdoor ceremony in the pretty courtyard. dos.” However, if your guest list is less modest The Gatefield Hall is another option, which can host 150 for the vows. The latter is a large room with a high vaulted ceiling and is the place to be for receptions. It can be dressed with drapes and offers a blank canvas that can be decorated to suit. The adjoining private garden can accommodate gazebos and even a bouncy castle. The Hall has a capacity of 250 depending on the layout. There’s also a separate bar and lounge area alongside it, which is included in the wedding hire. On the other hand there are plenty of interconnecting heritage rooms that can be used to provide an intimate space for smaller gatherings. Also available is a space for you both to get ready prior to the ceremony. You’ll benefit from access to the venue the evening before the wedding, allowing you to dress it in your own time, and then come in the day after the celebrations to collect everything, leaving the big event itself stress free.

bby and Jake remember making each other laugh right from their very first conversation about basketball as teenagers, and they’ve been doing the same ever since. Now aged 25 and 26 respectively the couple have been together for a decade. Absence truly did make the heart grow fonder for Jake as having spent three months away in Canada for work, he proposed to Abby over a special dinner to celebrate his return. After a meal at The Shard he surprised her with a private pod on The London Eye. Abby remembers, “We were nearly at the top and as the sun set Jake got down on one knee. It was utterly amazing and so much thought had gone into it that it was even more special.” After researching many different venues, Cooling Castle Barn stood out for its location, features and package. “Luckily, it held an open day not long after we discovered it, and as soon as we visited we fell in love. The staff answered all of our questions on the day and we appreciated how up front they were about costs, features and the factors we needed to consider. We walked away armed with everything we needed and we’d decided it was the venue for us before we’d even got back to the car!” Abby explains. We don’t know about you, but we were eager to know more. So join us as Abby shares her account of the big day...
SETTING THE SCENE The couple opted for an elegant palette of white and silver beautifully carried throughout the day. Centrepieces were theme-fitting classic silver candelabras. The flowers featured hues of lilac, raspberry and silver from bouquets to buttonholes and corsages, while white rose petals were scattered down the aisle and a beautiful floral hoop served as a backdrop to the vows. The innovative table plan featured a key for each guest complete with a small white tag labelled with their name and table number. “We wanted to create something different from a classic table plan and the keys doubled as a small keepsake for everyone,” Abby says. The place names each bore an A + J design with a floral motif and the quote: “here’s to love, laughter and happily ever after.” The tables were numbered and each one had a photo of the happy couple at the corresponding age. They created their own card post box and we love the idea of leaving a calendar alongside it for guests to fill in their birthdays, so the newlyweds never miss one. Instead of a traditional tiered affair, the big-day bake was a display of cakes in different sizes placed on petal-filled glass pillars. The venue provided an extensive choice of food and guests were able to make their selections from two starters, three mains and two desserts.

LOOKING THE PART Abby wore the gorgeous Noelle by Maggie Sottero. She tells us, “I chose this style as it had a beautiful low lace back with illusion chest that fitted my figure perfectly.” She finished the look with a floorlength veil, a silver and pearl headpiece, and Swarovski earrings that complemented her engagement ring. Jake looked dapper in a blue suit with grey waistcoat, while the groomsmen wore matching suits with contrasting blue waistcoats. He accessorised with a pair of cufflinks, which had a picture of him and his late auntie in them, given to him as a present from his mum. The bridesmaids and maid-of-honour looked gorgeous in their off-the-shoulder grey dresses, while the flowergirl was super-cute in a grey pleated dress.
TIME TO CELEBRATE Guests were entertained to the full at the blackjack and roulette tables. The staff from Ace Casino hire brought with them trophies and champagne for the winners, as well as customised fun money complete with a picture of the newlyweds. “They were amazing with the guests of all ages and really brought everyone together for lots of fun,” Abby shares. In the evening a DJ filled the dancefloor, with the playlist of songs the couple selected.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS Abby says, “We both felt excited as it seemed a long time coming. Having booked the date two years previous we were counting down for what seemed like forever. The day was perfect and once we saw each other we felt instantly emotional.” The speeches were a highlight, the bride explains, “In the run up to the wedding Jake had a few mishaps, which included losing his phone on his stag do and getting lost on the way home on another occasion. My dad’s speech brilliantly included both incidents as he proceeded to give Jake a giant inflatable phone so that he wouldn’t lose it again, and a road map so he’s always be able to find his way home!” The couple would especially like to thank their toastmaster, Julie: “She helped calm us, make us laugh, be honest with us and be on the ball. She was just what we needed to help throughout the whole day from getting ready in the morning to dealing with our last minute decisions.” 39

REAL WEDDINGS

Despite a whole host of changes to their original plans, Georgia and Charlie were determined that their big day was meant to be Images courtesy of Photography by Kirsty
G
eorgia’s family and Charlie’s were friends for many years before the pair became a couple. They bonded thanks to their mutual love of Millwall FC and their relationship blossomed over a series of Saturdays at its matches. Charlie proposed to Georgia on her 21st birthday. During celebrations at her nan’s house, as she began to open cards and presents, Charlie told her he wanted to give her a meaningful gift that she’d remember forever. He then got down on one knee and asked her to marry him! “Of course I said ‘yes.’ My mum and nan were both in tears,” Georgia tells us. It was then revealed that before she’d arrived her mum and nan had been frantically tearing down congratulations banners at Charlie’s behest. He’d originally planned to propose over breakfast at the Shard, but when he got stopped by security on the way in thanks to the engagement ring in his pocket, he thought he’d been rumbled by Georgia and aborted the plan. Still, all’s well that end’s well. So, by the time it came to planning the wedding, the couple were already used to rolling with the punches. The intention had been to get married in their local church and host the reception at Millwall Football
Club, it being so dear to their hearts and key to their love story. However, due to the pandemic they thought it best to make some changes and decided to hold their day in one location. They’d discovered Westerham Golf Club the first time they started looking for venues and it’d stuck in their minds. “Plus, Charlie’s hobby is golf, so it was a winner with him,” Georgia says. As the Covid crisis worsened more replanning was necessary, but the couple were determined and set about rescheduling their day. Georgia explains, “When the country went into lockdown in March 2020 we knew our June wedding would be unlikely to go ahead. So, we decided to move it to 27th December and I began the process of replanning. However, as the big day approached the pandemic had started to worsen and we knew another lockdown was imminent, leaving our plans hanging in the balance. At this point we both decided we’d had enough of rearranging everything and decided to bring our celebration forward to 18th October – at the time just six weeks away.” Read on as the bride shares more memories of the couple’s hard-won big day...

We sat down to a traditional wedding breakfast of roast dinner, followed by our first dance and the cutting of the cake. Although we weren’t able to have a full reception we plan to have one at later Millwall Football Club once all restrictions are lifted.
We bought everyone individual gifts, as well as mini bottles of hand sanitisers complete with stickers that read: “spread love not germs.”
As there were only 15 of us we wanted something simple and traditional. So, we opted for a six-inch extra-deep vanilla sponge cake with raspberry jam and swiss buttercream filling, covered in ivory sugar paste with our initials stencilled in navy. It was embellished with sugar petals and beads and a silver topper, which read: “finally married.”
When we told our families that we’d brought our big day forward, they told us everything happens for a reason. Sadly, Charlie’s grandad passed away just six weeks after the wedding. It meant the world to us to have our grandparents there.

The entire day was amazing, and as a surprise, members of our family who weren’t able to join us had recorded video messages of congratulations.

Summer lovin’ When Jade and George’s Ibiza wedding was cancelled due to Covid, their friends and family pulled together to bring a slice of the Mediterranean to Kent Images courtesy of Garter Wedding Photography

J
ade and George met when she pushed in front of him at a bar! He didn’t seem to mind though as he ended up buying her a drink and the pair got chatting. We hop forward and by this time a couple, the two were on a group holiday in Turkey. George had booked a table at a restaurant for a little private time away from their travel companions. Then, before going to meet friends for drinks afterwards, he made up an excuse to go back to their room. Jade arrived to find it decorated in rose petals with a bottle of champagne waiting, and that’s when George popped the question. “It was a complete surprise,” Jade tells us. The pair had originally intended to tie the knot in Ibiza, with the legalities conducted at Danson House in Bexley, but just a month beforehand Covid restrictions kicked in making the lion’s share of the plan impossible. “I was completely heartbroken after planning the wedding for two years, but my mum, close friends and bridesmaid’s mum all pulled together to give us our Ibiza wedding in England,” Jade says. As luck would have it, the wedding took place on the hottest day of the year, so they were certainly able to enjoy some Mediterranean-like sunshine. “It was so hot everyone had to get changed into cooler clothes,” Jade remembers. Join us as the bride tells us more about the big day, 7th August, 2020... “Ever since I was little I’ve been obsessed with lace. I went to so many shops and fell in love with a lot of dresses, but eventually chose an Enzoni beaded lace gown. Being figure hugging yet light, it was just what I was looking for. “In line with our neutral theme, George wore a beige linen suit. The groomsmen were dressed to match minus the tie and jacket.”
“My bridesmaids wore champagne/gold silk dresses. I fell in love with them and feel sure the girls will be able to wear them again. As a ‘thank you’ for their support, I gave them all lovely personalised cards from Etsy, champagne-coloured bridal robes, matching earrings and a delicate bracelet each to match their dresses.”

REAL WEDDINGS
“I’d advise any other couples facing a similar situation to go ahead with whatever you can. Even if you have the smallest wedding, all the tears and stresses really aren’t worth it. Never lose sight of why you chose to get married in the first place. With the benefit of hindsight I really wish I’d been more chilled during the run-up. Remember: anything you do will be amazing as long as you have the people there that count – yourself and your spouse. On the day we were on cloud nine. We couldn’t have planned for better, we are so grateful for everyone who made it happen.”
51
“As the reception was at my mum’s house our wedding was pretty informal with no table plan. But we did have tables dressed in gypsophila set up in a gazebo where people could sit and take refuge from the sun. These were later moved to make way for the dancefloor. “Our flowers were big white roses, which I’d always wanted as I feel they’re classic and timeless. I made a welcome sign using pampas grass and gold vinyl to complement our theme. We also hired a white flower wall with gold balloons.”
“In keeping with the informal style of the day we had food platters that guests could help themselves to. These went down a treat and I’d definitely recommend this style of dining instead of a formal three course meal. My mum got us a lovely three-tier cake, but because we were having so much fun, we never even cut it! “We had an amazing reception. We still get people tell us even now that considering the whole was pulled together in 10 days, it was one of the best they’d been to. Our DJ was Tony R with one of his Soul Town festival signers and an amazing saxophonist, so it really felt like our own Ibiza party in Kent. The saxophone player was a real highlight for us. He got everyone up and dancing, creating such a great atmosphere.”

VENUE STYLING
FINDING WONDERLAND
Our experts explain how to set the stage for the wedding of your dreams
W
hen faced with the initial blank canvas that is your venue you may view it in one of two ways: with total panic or giddy excitement. In which case, you’ll either be in need of inspiration or focus, so we turned to the county’s styling experts for support. Check out their top tips for creating a veritable wedding wonderland with wow factor.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN Natasha Grant, Pearline Events says: “Before you do anything with your venue you’ll need to get your ideas together to establish what style you want your wedding to be. You could create a mood board, whether that’s on Pinterest or elsewhere. Narrow down your ideas by looking at the common elements. Ask yourself whether there’s a clear style and whether you’re drawn towards certain colours. This will all help to identify your preferred theme.”
DRAPED IN FINERY Daniel Kyte-Collings, KC Weddings & Events says, “Clever use of wall and ceiling drapery can transform any plain space into an amazing marqueestyle area. When using white you’ll automatically have a clean palette to work with that looks stylish, indulgent and elegant.”
DIVIDE AND CONQUER Melanie Revell-Leaman, Your Story Events says, “Try to visualise the space into different areas and sections. For example, perhaps you know you need a dining area, bar, dancefloor and seating area where guests can chill. Once you have these outlined it makes life a lot easier.” 59
Shelly Pence for Pearline Events
LIGHT THE WAY Natasha says, “Clever use of lighting really helps to create the right atmosphere. Illuminating key places during the evening will add drama as well as an alternative look as celebrations progress.” Daniel agrees, “Uplighters bring a colour palette together while creating interest and beauty. They make a space appear theatrical, warm and vibrant, without being over-the-top.” moc.yhpargotohpmikneexam.www
GET PERSONAL Natasha says, “Your wedding is about reflecting you as a couple, so beginning with a blank canvas is a fantastic opportunity. Discuss what elements are important for the both of you to have included, then use these to create statement features. For example, a beautiful floral display or a sumptuous dessert table. This way you’ll build key areas and provide focal points that double as fab photo hotspots.” Melanie agrees, “You don’t want your wedding to look like every other and that’s the beauty of starting from scratch. It allows you to bring in your personal style that doesn’t have to stop at colour alone. For example, if you have a love of all things vintage, then include retro-style furniture and rustic props. Or, perhaps you lean towards modern and sleek vibes – no problem, simply incorporate contemporary sofas with plenty of mirrors and glass.
TABLE DÉCOR Daniel says, “Tall centrepieces increase height making the space look full with impact and an edge of drama. Perfect for high spaces like marquees.” Natasha tells us, “Your tables will occupy a significant amount space, so don’t neglect them. Use exquisite items from glassware to sumptuous highquality linen and furnishings to lend an exceptional look and feel.” 60

PROP IT UP Daniel says, “Props, urns, plinths and interactive areas: all great ways to hide empty corners and can be moved throughout the day to be utilised again wherever necessary. Adding extra tables is another great method of concealment. Beside the obvious cake and gift options, have you thought about a sweetie table, kids’ dining table, gin-tasting or memorial table?”

Melanie says, “Flowers don’t have to stop at centrepieces and bouquets. In fact, florists can build incredible installations suspended from above, below a perspex dancefloor or in the form of archways and flower bars.”

Melanie says, “When it comes to a seating area, I love to see it as cosy, comfortable living room where guests feel welcome and relaxed when taking a break from the dancefloor. Think sofas, armchairs, coffee tables and rugs, with bud vases or candles to decorate.”

EXPERT ADVICE
HOT TOPIC Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know
READY, SET, WED!
I’m not sure whether I want photos captured in the morning while we’re getting ready. What would you recommend, is it a good idea? I think bridal preparation is a huge part of the day and definitely a must when it comes to documenting your wedding. I usually start the morning by capturing all of the lovely details such as the dresses, shoes, flowers and jewellery – all the bits and pieces my brides might have lost sleep over! But more importantly, these images showcase a love shared. Whether its a mum, sister or bestie, those present for this inner circle are the people the bride
loves most in the world... barring the one she’s about to marry of course! As well as the bride tribe we usually have the hair and make-up specialists in the room too. All the bride needs to do is relax and enjoy the pampering, so champagne corks are often flying, while love and laughter is on tap. It really is the best girly sleepover, without the sleep. Add to that the emotional scene of revealing the wedding dress to dad and it’s the stuff movies are made of. For when the doors finally open, that means the bride and her party are ready, and the day can begin. It’s so very exciting. Lee Gordon | Blushing Bride Photography www.blushingbridephotography.com
BLOOMIN’ MARVELLOUS
Faux or fresh flowers, which should I opt for and why? Considering the beauty and opulence flowers add to your wedding day, they’re a huge element of the planning process. So, along with colour and design, it’s not surprising you’ve found yourself asking about the benefits of fresh versus faux. There’s no denying that fresh blooms are beautiful. Their myriad forms, colours and scent cannot be truly replicated by their artificial counterparts. However, there are a few points to consider before you make the final decision. ❤ Cost. Fresh flowers are becoming more expensive due to global supply issues and uncertain weather patterns. If you’d like the wow factor, but lack the budget, faux centrepieces can be hired at a fraction of the cost. ❤ Seasonality. Many favourite wedding varieties such as peonies have a very limited season. By opting for faux flowers you can choose the ones you love whatever the time of year. ❤ Allergies. If you or your partner suffer from hay fever, faux is the way to go. ❤ Quality and freshness. Good quality faux blooms can look and feel very natural as quality has improved greatly over the years. In fact, it’s unlikely your guests will be able to tell the difference. However, their fresh equivalents can wilt in the heat and are susceptible to bruising. ❤ Weight. Artificial flowers are much lighter than fresh and don’t require a water source making them ideal for garlands, arches and hanging installations. ❤ Keepsakes. Your faux bridal bouquet can be treasured forever. Finally... why not mix and match? My recommendation would be to have a fresh flower bouquet with faux table centres and décor – the best of both worlds. Diana Critchell | Flowers of Foxhall www.flowersoffoxhall.co.uk 71

LIGHT OF MY LIFE
We’ve heard that lighting is a key element in styling a wedding. Can you tell us more? This is very true – never underestimate the power of lighting! It really is the best aspect to focus on. Especially with a dry hire venue that presents you with a totally blank canvas, as the right lighting will finish it off perfectly. For instance, a chandelier will create a romantic, traditional look, whereas festoon lighting is ideal for a festival-themed wedding. Fairylights strung across the ceiling can bring a starry vibe, and hanging light bulbs will work brilliantly with an industrial, modern feel. Candlelight is beautiful and works wonders when creating an intimate, romantic feel. Even if you have a guest list of 200 or more, it’ll still lend the space that cosy, welcoming ambience. COUNTRYSIDE CLASS
What floral centrepieces would best suit a rustic-themed wedding?
Why not use wood slices stacked on top of each other to give the tables a rustic feel? These can then be decorated with woodland-themed flowers and foliage such as anemones, foxgloves, Solomon’s seal, narcissi, ferns and ivy. Depending on the time of year, you could even use plants and flowering blubs tucked into the display. Moss can be utilised to hide pots and soil, and by incorporating pine cones, bark pieces, decorative twigs or lichen you can create a lovely textured scene that really looks the part. Small log slices can be used on guest tables with bigger versions stacked up around the venue framing the doors or placed in a bare corner. y t u a e B Q&A Look and feel your big-day best with advice from our beauty professionals
LIP SERVICE How can I make my lipstick last all day without having to constantly reapply? Ruth says: There are many ways, but the following method is tried and tested by many make-up artists... Preparation is key. Before you do anything else, ensure the lips have been exfoliated with a balm applied afterwards and left on while your make-up is being done. They need to be moisturised and kissable! No matter how expensive the products used, your lips won’t look their best if they’re dry, flaky or chapped. When you’re ready, remove any excess balm and use a cotton bud dipped in micellar water to clean away any foundation that’s accidentally transferred to the lips. Then, wait for them to dry or blot with a tissue if you need to speed things along. A long-lasting liner is best to define the shape and fill in the whole area. Charlotte Tilbury’s pencil is a favourite of mine. Now comes the difficult bit – avoid licking your lips as a dry surface is ideal for applying lipstick. Next, using a specialist brush apply the lippy evenly and blot with a clean tissue to press in the product and remove any excess. Then, with a clean brush apply a light layer of translucent powder and repeat the blotting process. Finally, reapply the lipstick over the powdered lips. Remember, the last thing you apply will be the first to come off. So, avoid getting lips wet and use a straw when having a drink. Also, a fake peck on the cheek rather than on the lips may not be as much fun, but it will help your pout stay perfect for longer!

HAIR TODAY… I’d love an ultra-modern hair style for my big day. What’s hot right now? Kelly says: If the last 18 months have taught us anything it’s how to chill the heck out when it comes to appearance! Let’s be honest we’re all happy to leave the house looking a lot less coiffed than we used to, and this ethos has translated to the aisle. Lived-in tresses with texture and softness are the way forward for 2021 and beyond. Brides are after a look that’s comfortable and reflective of their personalities. No longer should you be afraid to see a hair out of place. Think plenty of texturising spray and softly pinned buns. We’re absolutely delighted to see hair accessories growing in popularity amongst our brides, and with such an abundance of choice you can’t go wrong. Everything from a white satin or pearl encrusted headband to a delicately bejewelled hair vine is in. You may even choose to minimise or forego jewellery altogether in favour of a statement head piece. For the modern boho bride, why not consider a super-cool fedora or panama hat with fresh flower band. Be creative and enjoy!

BUZZ
BYE BYE TO DRY
When you’re adorned in light, soft and smooth fabrics on your wedding day the last thing you want is to have that bubble popped by dry and rough feet tucked into those https://youtu.be/Vck_6T7VrZs Jimmy Choos you’ve been saving for. The Skin Republic Foot Peel offers the solution. Rather satisfyingly gross, it will remove dead skin in seven to 10 days, thanks to its dual-layered booties infused with an exfoliating serum packed with plant extracts and alpha hydroxy acids. After wearing them for up to two hours, over the course of the next week to ten days, you’ll be able to see the peel working as dead skin cells, calluses and rough skin flake away to leave soft, soothed and hydrated tootsies. If you dare, click play to see how I got on with the peel. For ultimate results, use twice a month for the first month and then as required. Priced at £9.99, its available at www.superdrug.com

THE CLEANSING EXPRESS
Following the award-winning success of its legendary cleanser, Eve Lom has created a new generation lightweight gel balm cleanser formulated to address the fast-paced lifestyle of the modern woman. When massaged into wet skin, the easy-to-use formula gently transforms from a gel balm texture into a soothing milky cleanser that’s quick to rinse off and leaves skin blissfully soft. Fortified with a high dose of shea butter and nourishing grapeseed oil, it’s clinically proven to moisturise skin for up to 12 hours after use. Using Eve Lom’s signature blend of clove, eucalyptus, hops and chamomile oils, it dissolves impurities and all traces of make-up, including waterproof mascara, in an instant. Check out www.evelom.co.uk
POLISH PERFECTION
Ok, has anyone else noticed how incessant use of hand sanitiser ruins a maincure? Annoying isn’t it? Apparently the alcohol they contain, which is designed to break down germs and bacteria, while protecting us from Covid, unfortunately does the same to nail varnish. Not only that, but it also dries out nails, which in turn causes polish to chip. So, we were thrilled when we found out that the brilliant folk at Barry M have come up with a Sanitiser Proof Topcoat – genius! Stay safe and look fab. A steal at £3.99 it’s available at www.barrym.com, Superdrug and Boots.
SILVER BULLET Adult acne is now the most common skin complaint amongst women, largely due to stress and a building intolerance to chemicals in cosmetic and skin care products. The most common way of treating acne breakouts is with an antibacterial wash, however what these do is wash away the good bacteria along with the bad – not great for the overall health and youthfulness of your skin. Silver Serum from Skin Shop is a smart anti-bacterial skin treatment that contains the patented ingredient MicroSilver, which specifically seeks out and kills harmful bacteria while leaving the friendly stuff intact. Bridal make-up artist Jo Crossley recommends the product to brides who may be prone to breakouts before their big day. She says, “It’s effective and great when you need results fast!” Free from perfume, parabens MI and SLS, it costs £12.95 from www.clarol.co.uk
BE AT PEACE
Cult US brand, Peace Out Skincare has landed in the UK with a mission is to help you bring peace to your skin through effective and fun skincare solutions like the acne dots, pore strips and daily targeted routine solutions like the retinol eye stick. I love the Peace Out Puffy Eyes. Ideal if lack of sleep from excitement the night before the big day has left peepers looking a little tired. Packed with brightening power players caffeine, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid they revitalise tired-looking eyes by helping to reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles in just 15 minutes. Priced at £23 for 12 patches and available at www.boots.com
HAIR REPAIR
If damaged hair is cause for concern in the lead up to the big day, reset your locks with a deep hydration. Bored during lock down, I bleached the ends of my hair on a whim – as you do – and over time they have become brittle and dry. So, I gave On A Cloud Baobab Oil Masque, R+Co’s newest launch, a try. The protein-rich, creamy formula renews damaged hair fibres bringing nourishment, strength and elasticity to your strands, while the baobab oil protein rebuilds bonds. Massage into wet hair after shampooing and leave for five to 10 minutes, depending on how damaged you feel your hair is, and rinse. I was pleased how the shine was restored once more and the ends were left feeling smoother and stronger. The new On A Cloud range also includes the Baobab Oil Repair Shampoo, and Baobab Oil Repair Splash On Styler. Priced at £40 the masque is available with the rest of the range at www.rebelbeautybrands.com 99

This restorative cream treats skin on the body or lips so I was eager to see the results. I’ll admit to being surprised by the warm, spiced and woody fragrance that met me when I opened the tube, and after just two applications, my lips had stopped cracking and felt silky smooth. Emboldened by this success, I tried treating the dry sections on my face. The product soaked in straight away and left skin dewy after just five minutes. I’m pleased to report that I’ve found my new emergency moisturiser! Bonus – it’s cruelty free too. – Beth Morton

I must admit, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from a cleanser containing kale, spinach and green tea, but it certainly sounded intriguing. Wedding wellness
The last year’s been tough – take some time out for self-care and focus on your wellbeing #HYDRATIONISKEY
We all know by now that hydration is imperative to good health and a key part of any beauty regime. And if you haven’t been told by now that it’s the key to your wedding skin prep – you will be! However, switching that second cup of coffee for tap water isn’t necessarily the easiest change to swallow. What if we told you there was something that hydrated you faster than ordinary water, tasted better and provided an energising alternative to that acidic cuppa? It’s time to say “hello” to alkaline water. Actiph Water is the UK’s first alkaline ionised water. Purified from Shropshire with added electrolytes and minerals it hydrates you fast and helps to give your skin it’s glow back. Find out more at https://actiphwater.com
#FRESHSTART Bored with hot water and lemon in the morning? Then maybe it’s time for a Fresh Start with Pukka’s newest caffeine-free organic tea. Expertly blended with sustainablysourced organic herbs, delicious zesty organic lemon and warming aromatic fennel seeds, it gently awakens your body and mind to a new day helping you feel your brightest self. What’s more, this stimulating yet soothing blend helps to strengthen the digestive system to support optimum metabolism. Priced at £2.99 for 20 sachets, it’s available at https://uk.pukkaherbs.com, and from health food stores and supermarkets across the land.
#FindYourInnerCalm Designed to accompany ESPA’s sensorial collection of Signature Blends, the Aromatic Essential Oil Diffuser, £85, harnesses the harmonising power of aromatherapy to nurture your wellbeing. Whether you want to wind down and relax, improve your focus, lift your spirits or lull yourself to sleep, the diffuser’s ultrasonic vibrations humidify the atmosphere and disperse your choice of precious natural essential oils by releasing the perfect amount of fragrant vapour into your home. #ThePowerOfSleep Given the trials of the last year, looking after ourselves at home has never been more important, so to help with this endeavour, The Somerset Toiletry Company has created a collection of gifts to promote self-care and wellness and we’re all about its Sleepeze range. After all, the importance of sleep when it comes to ultimate wellbeing can never be underestimated, it’s crucial for body and mind. The Sleepeze Calming Gift Set, £9.95, includes a silky eye mask, pillow mist, and essential oil-based rollerball. Then there’s the Calming Sleep Stones, £11.95 – 200g of volcanic rock infused with essential oils to enhance your night-time routine. #SCREENEYES Modern life means we spend more and more time on our devices and computers, and since you blink six to eight times less when you look at a screen, it’s no wonder that many of us are ending the day with tired and heavy eyes. Dry eye syndrome is a condition that affects around 80 per cent of us – a sobering thought considering screen use has increased by 187 per cent over the last three lockdowns. To combat this problem, modern eyecare brand Peep Club has launched its new Relief Eye Spray, £15, which hydrates eyes from the inside out with a clever combo of vegan-friendly, organic and wild-harvested ingredients. It’s suitable for even the most sensitive of peepers, as well as being safe for contact lens wearers and can be used over make-up. Check out www.peepclub.com

THE HEALTHY Achieve the wedding tresses of your dreams with help from trichologist Anabel Kingsley
A
nabel Kingsley, daughter of renowned trichologist Philip Kingsley, is a consultant trichologist and president of global brand Philip Kingsley with clinics in London and New York. Inspired by her father from an early age, she has an immense passion for hair and scalp health. The depth of her knowledge in the field is practically endless, so who better to turn to for advice on getting your locks wedding-ready? Here, Anabel gives us the benefit of her wisdom on everything from achieving the right length for that perfect up do, to nutrition and the impact of stress. DRY HAIR PRONE TO BREAKAGE? Dry hair usually occurs as a result of too much heat-styling and bleaching, as well as UV, chlorinated and salt water exposure. You should care for your scalp in a similar way to the skin on your face. I’d suggest shampooing daily if you can, but certainly don’t leave more than three days between washes. 104
Daily toning of the scalp is also helpful. Apply a soothing, antimicrobial toner containing witch hazel or camphor after shampooing, conditioning and towel-drying hair. You could also benefit from gentle weekly exfoliation. Exfoliating masks should be applied preshampoo and left on for around 20 minutes. Good ingredients to look out for are aloe vera and betaine salicylate. Then, to moisturise dry
strands, work a pre-shampoo conditioner into your hair once a week, or twice if it’s particularly parched. When you heat-style, hold the dryer at least 12 inches away to avoid placing excessive heat on the hair shaft. Then stop when it’s only just dry, as applying heat to already dry hair will remove moisture from within rather than the water sitting on top. Limit use of straighteners and tongs as much as possible, but when you find yourself reaching for them be sure to use a heat protective spray or serum such as Philip Kingsley’s Finishing Touch Polishing Serum and don’t go over the same areas repeatedly. HELP, MY HAIR’S NOT GROWING! Take care of your scalp; it’s your hair’s support system. A healthy scalp promotes healthy hair
BEAUTY INTERVIEW growth. Following the aforementioned daily cleanse, tone and mask regime is a great first step on the road to luscious long locks. Provided you’re not experiencing hair loss, but simply want to maximise your hair’s growth potential, eating well will certainly help. Hair isn’t an essential tissue – it’s the last part of you to receive nutrients, but the first to have them withheld. So, any nutritional deficiency can negatively impact your hair long before it affects your general health. Eating at least a palm-sized portion of protein and a serving of complex carbohydrates at breakfast and lunch will help your strands to grow long and strong. It’s important never to skip breakfast. This is the most important meal of the day for your hair as it’s when energy levels to the follicles are at their lowest. A great example of a healthy-hair breakfast would be poached eggs with whole-wheat toast, quinoa porridge with berries and toasted almonds, or smoked salmon on a bagel. Don’t be afraid to snack as the energy needed to form hair cells drops four hours after eating. I recommend reaching for a nutrient-dense healthy snack such as crudité and hummus, fresh fruit or toast with almond butter. Overall, make sure you eat a balanced diet – if you’re deficient in a certain vitamin or mineral it can affect your hair and it’s growth. Amino acids, omega 3, zinc, iron and vitamin B12 are all crucial. However, try to avoid mercury-rich fish, such as tuna and swordfish as high levels can affect the growth cycle. Likewise, if you suffer from dandruff, cut back on full-fat dairy products as this can trigger flaking and itching. Finally, be gentle. Unlike your skin, your strands don’t regenerate if they’re damaged. So, be careful when you style, brush, detangle, shampoo and towel dry. WHAT PRODUCTS ARE BEST FOR ME? Like skincare, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution
to haircare. The integrity of a product and what hair texture it will work for largely depends on the concentration and quality of the ingredients, which is well nigh impossible to ascertain from the labels. We have to trust the description given as a guide, but I’d recommend that as a rule of thumb you don’t choose a shampoo based on normal, oily or dry descriptions, as your normal won’t be someone else’s normal. Instead, pick one that’s formulated based on hair texture. The following should help steer you in the right direction: ❤ Afro Caribbean hair. Often prone to damage as weak points form along the hair shaft where curls occur, and is also highly porous. Choose a shampoo that intensively moisturises and gently cleanses at the same time. ❤ Coarse hair. More porous than medium or fine textures, it’s prone to moisture loss becoming dry and frizzy. Use a re-moisturising shampoo with anti-static ingredients.
❤ Medium texture. Tends to get slightly oily at the roots and dry at the ends. Use a moisture-balancing shampoo to address both needs. ❤ Fine hair. With more oil glands on the scalp hair can become lank and easily weighed down. Use a cleansing yet gently bodybuilding shampoo rich in thickening proteins. STRESS TEST Stress can really do a number on your hair, mainly because it’s bad for your health in general. When you’re feeling stressed, your brain doesn’t distinguish between the stress you might be under at work or from planning a wedding, and the kind you’d experience in a life-ordeath situation. As such, the chemical reactions produced in your body are similar and result in a fight or flight response, triggering unwanted hair and scalp effects such as excessive daily hair fall and increased sebum production. In terms of stress management techniques, it really depends on what works for you and your schedule. Some find Pilates and yoga classes helpful, while others prefer at-home meditation or using mindfulness apps a couple of times a day. Alternatively, you may find walking, swimming or reading relaxing. Hair loss in itself is stressful and while it’s difficult to remain calm, I advise my clients to be patient, trust in the treatment and leave their worries with us at the clinic. Once a person steps through our doors, it’s our job to put them at ease and provide them with a comprehensive treatment plan. I also advise them not to Google! There’s so much mis-information online, and the internet can come up with some pretty scary and unhelpful things. For further information on specific hair-related concerns and how a trichologist might be able to help you, check out www.philipkingsley.co.uk, where you can also find the full Philip Kingsley product range. 105

The darling buds
HONEYMOONS
fo May
Hannah Faulder receives a true Yorkshire welcome at The Alice Hawthorn in Nun Monkton rriving in Nun Monkton is like stepping back in time. Nestled between York and Harrogate, the village is home to a 20-acre green surrounded by picture-perfect cottages; at the centre is a twinkling pond, complete with dabbling ducks. Insects buzz merrily through the swaying grass and cows lazily graze among the buttercups. The huge maypole evokes that nostalgic country village feel. This bucolic setting is the home of the Grade IIlisted Alice Hawthorn. The pub has been expertly reimagined as a destination dining spot with luxury rooms while remaining true to its purpose at the heart of village life. We were told that the pub’s namesake was a famous racehorse owned by local man John Plummer, who unexpectedly received the horse in a will and named it after the local blacksmith’s daughter. The building looks every bit the archetypal country pub, especially with its cosy, dog-friendly bar, and its serene setting means it couldn’t be more perfect for a chilled-out honeymoon or post-vow getaway. After a long few months of lockdown followed by grey and drizzly weather, my husband, Cal, and I were delighted to find that spring had finally sprung when we arrived at The Alice Hawthorn at the end of May.
STAY We checked into one of the four Pub Rooms, which boasted postcard-worthy village-green
views. Quiet despite the hubbub of the restaurant, the room’s high ceilings and exposed beams create drama, while the comfort, amenities and calming palette were homely. The room was decorated with exceptional taste; it’s a real skill to retain the character of a place like this while injecting a modern edge. I particularly enjoyed luxuriating in the freestanding bath tub before jumping into the enormous bed with its crisp white sheets. A tour of the newly launched Garden Rooms to the rear of the pub showed that the impeccable style is carried throughout. With more than just a nod to its agricultural roots, the rooms are constructed from Douglas fir and finished inside and out with light-coloured timber. The result is an oasis of calm, with a feeling of space and an abundance of natural light.
EAT The restaurant has long been a foodie destination. Chef partner John Topham focuses his talents on creating incredible menus with seasonal produce and local ingredients. To me, food that reflects the locality and is at one with its setting is real luxury. The service is wonderful; attentive yet informal, the friendly staff add to the vibe. We particularly enjoyed chatting with the lovely Enzo, whom we ended up having a drink with while he told us stories of the pub’s heritage. For foodie couples, there’s a gorgeous barn-style private dining room, which would make the most wonderful big-day setting for up to 30 guests. The Yorkshire asparagus starter with poached hen’s eggs and croquette potatoes just tasted of springtime, while my veggie option of harissa roast aubergine with tabbouleh and broadbean pesto had the most wonderful balance of flavours. My meat-eating husband had the special: stone bass with gnocchi and mussels, which he devoured. On the second night, he proclaimed the Whitby crab mayo with
guacamole and sweetcorn ice cream the best starter he’d ever eaten. In the morning, you must treat yourself to the breakfast. The crushed avocado and poached egg on sourdough is the ideal way to start your day. Although we couldn’t take advantage of the hotel’s Pizza in the Gardens nights (they start in June, so for a future trip, perhaps?), we could just imagine being in the Mediterranean-style setting of the beer garden, toes-in-grass, with the smell of stone-baked pizza in the air and a jazz band creating the perfect summer-evening atmosphere.
EXPLORE If you can drag yourself away, there are plenty of great places to check out before retiring to the serenity of your room… ❤ The National Trust’s Beningbrough Hall is accessible via a ferryboat across the river from Nun Monkton. The Italianate hall is surrounded by beautiful formal gardens. ❤ There’s plenty of gorgeous countryside to explore on foot. We visited the village’s pretty church with its William Morris-designed stained-glass window, grabbed a sneak peak at the grand Priory and strolled down to the river. There’s even a handy book of walks in the rooms. ❤ Yorkshire Heart Vineyard is about a mile down the road. We couldn’t leave without a bottle of their rosé wine. ❤ Nearby Harrogate is a charming Victorian spa town with pretty gardens and boutique shops. A trip to the famous Bettys Tea Rooms is practically a legal obligation while here (that’s what I told my husband anyway). ❤ York is a huge draw with the city walls to explore, the huge Gothic cathedral, the Jorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum. It’s a busy day, but retiring to The Alice Hawthorn’s beer garden for a wellearned pint makes it all worth it.
BOOK IT: Pub Rooms at The Alice Hawthorn start from £120 per night and Garden Rooms from £140 per night based on two adults sharing on a B&B basis. Visit www.thealicehawthorn.com 111

Ready, set, plan!
County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
H
ello to all my fellow nearlyweds-to-be! My wedding is just over a year away, and as much as I hate to admit it, I’m officially a bridezilla! I’m obsessively organised at the best of times, but knowing we have a whole day to plan with all eyes on us has sent my OCD into overdrive. My fiancé, Dave, calls it ‘wedding brain’ and likes to tease me about my folders and schedules, but keeping everything neat is definitely helping reduce my anxiety. Obviously, I have ages until our big day, but I find myself dreaming about silly things, like the wrong flowers turning up, Dave forgetting his suit (a strong possibility) or my dress not fitting. Some of my friends tying the knot have admitted to being the same, so if you find yourself worrying about trivial details, don’t panic, you’re not alone!
asked to choose from for the wedding breakfast. We’re complete foodies and were excited to go through the menus and make a decision – even though the process did make me snack constantly and ruined my wedding diet. We needed to confirm a company without tasting anything due to lockdown restrictions, which the control freak in me found pretty stressful as we didn’t want to make the wrong decision. So before committing, we researched the companies, looked at reviews, compared prices, locations, COVID-19 policies and the menus until (finally) we had a winner. To keep things relaxed, we’ve decided on a barbecue instead of a traditional three-course meal and have booked a tasting for later in the year – hurrah!
not so fun part). We organised video chats with two of them, and Dave, who is very decisive, felt an instant connection with the photographer who was recommended to us by a friend. He was lovely and put us both at ease right away. I made a list of questions to ask him (colour-coded of course), and he answered each one effortlessly. He had great reviews online, and we felt really confident about booking him. We’ve organised a pre-wedding shoot later this year, which will hopefully make us feel more comfortable in front of the camera! Next issue, hear all about our flowers and my hunt for the perfect dress. If you have any tips you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you. Drop me an email at Melissab@kdmediapublishing.com
FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD
PRETTY AS A PICTURE Due to 2020’s wedding wipeout and the increase of rescheduled weddings to an already busy summer wedding season, we started looking right away for our photographer before they were all booked. I’ve worked at County Wedding Magazines for almost five years, and during that time, I’ve seen hundreds of amazing weddings, which made finding the perfect supplier feel really daunting. We started by looking through wedding magazines and Instagram and narrowed down our list to five potentials. We found that most photographers don’t generally include their pricing on their website, so we emailed all of them and asked for their brochures and price lists. Once they’d all responded, we looked through the images and decided on the style we liked (the fun part) and how much we wanted to spend (the

I’m hoping to grow my hair longer for the big day, so I can have loose curls with a beautiful hair piece.
Our venue has a lavender field nearby, so we’re planning to have our pictures taken there.
We’re not sure if we’re going to have wedding favours, but if we do, we like the idea of something like this.

For my wedding ring, I’ve decided to have a row of diamonds that match my engagement ring.
I never wear make-up, so I’m planning to go for a very natural look.
Since we’re getting married in July, Dave is leaning towards a more casual, summery look.
No matter how hard I try, I can’t walk in heels, so I’m going to wear a pair of white trainers.
This popcorn set up is super cute. We’d love to do something similar but with sweets. 113
