Tis the wedding-season to be jolly I
’m so grateful that we’re ending the year in full wedding swing! Not only can we tie the knot in style with no restrictions at long last, we can also bring out the sparkly dresses and heels as party season’s on the horizon – it truly is time to celebrate and end the year in style! Although I’m quite the sun worshipper, I do love a winter wedding and when it comes to finding inspiration for your big day, there’s lots of it around at this time of the year. Streets are lined with twinkly fairylights, shop windows draped in rich seasonal shades, the scent of roasted chestnuts and mulled wine fills the air from Christmas markets and the buzz of excitement and cheer wraps you up like a big cosy winter blanket whenever you walk through the city – every sense is awakened. Wouldn’t you just love to feel all of that on your big day? Well with our help you can – we’ve got an inspo-packed issue for you to delve into right here! We have our pick of gorgeous venues from page 19, local florists share their favourite seasonal blooms on page 55 and look your very best with our top fashion, beauty and accessory advice on page 82. For styling ideas we’ve got not one but three shoots to share with you (the party animals out there will love the disco-inspired extravaganza on page 51) and check out our gorgeous real weddings on pages 31, 36, 42 and 44.

YOUR ESSENTIALS
LET’S FACE THE MUSIC The Royal College of Music (RCM) in South Kensington has opened its doors to wedding celebrations following a £40m investment and a transformation of the world-famous conservatoire, which is now available to hire. Couples can make use of a wide range of spaces in this gorgeous Grade-II listed building. The Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall is a popular option, with its Flentrop Orgelbouw organ forming the stage’s backdrop. If access to an indoor and outdoor area is a must, the 1815 Courtyard at RCM is the perfect choice. This red brick courtyard overlooks the stunning CotesBurgan atrium with its high glass ceiling letting in incredible light and is full of original features and a built-in bar. The Performance Hall, one of the newly built venues, boasts a wooden lattice panelling as a backdrop. The Hall was designed with performances in mind with state-of-the-art acoustics, so couples can opt for a performance by some of the college’s students to make the occasion extra special. ALL ABOUT
REAL WEDDING
Paul and Miche shared their vintage-inspired day with loved ones at Belair House Images courtesy of Picture Purple Photography
M
iche had never seen Paul before she went on her first date with him. “Paul used to pop into the office where I work, but we never really spoke,” Miche recalls. One day Paul rang up to speak to one of Miche’s colleagues and they got talking. “He found out that I wasn’t seeing anyone and asked me out. It was a complete blind date!” The duo met at the Worpledon Place in Guildford and clicked from the moment they met. “The chemistry between us was instant, we got on like a house of fire,” she shares. The first date was so good, that they did it all over again the following night and the rest is history. Five years later Paul proposed. “He asked me to marry him at his 40th birthday party in front of all our guests. It was a complete surprise, I was blown away and totally thrilled,” says Miche. Belair House set the scene for their special day and the picturesque grounds is what sold it for them. “We loved the fact you had the whole house to yourself, and it’s such a scenic location. Although it’s in the middle of South London, you feel as though you’re in the middle of the countryside,” shares Miche. Here, she tells us more about their day...

REAL WEDDINGS
B
oth working in the insurance industry in London, Abi and Andy’s paths were destined to cross. “We were introduced by a mutual friend one evening in a bar after work when Andy asked for my number. I took his business card and sent him an email after a few days,” Abi shares. Their first date was at Mews of Mayfair and then Hakkasan where they soon realised they had a lot in common – they shared a taste for great food and wine, both love cooking and going to Ibiza. “I knew he was the one when he never complained about all of my partying. He’s an only child and I come from a very big family, so it took a while for him to adjust to the mayhem that brings!” she adds. A few years later, Andy enlisted the help of their little ones to pop the question. “He proposed with our children wearing T-shirts with the words ‘Mummy, will you marry our Daddy?’ printed on them, which was very sweet,” recalls Abi. Here Abi tells us more about their day…
SETTING THE SCENE Along with so many couples, Abi and Andy’s big-day plans were changed and postponed so many times that they decided to organise a last-minute intimate affair. “We love Italy and first went together when I was pregnant with our daughter, so we decided that we’d marry there but it wasn’t to be,” Abi recalls. Originally planned for 2020, their Lake Como nuptials were postponed to 2021 and again to 2022. “We just wanted to get married so we planned a relaxed day consisting of a small ceremony followed by drinks in a pub garden.” The Grade I Listed Octagon Room at Orleans House Gallery was the perfect setting for Abi and Andy’s nuptials and created a gorgeous backdrop for photos. They then went on to The Crown for drinks. “A man who saw us in there bought us a bottle of Champagne saying it was tradition where he’s from in Canada, so we’ll now pass that on if ever we see a bride and groom on their wedding day,” says Abi. Although they’re now husband and wife, they still plan to have the day they’d dreamed of in Italy next year with over 100 people.
SIMPLE ELEGANCE Abi looked simply stunning in a Badgley Mischka dress and accessorised with a pair of navy suede Laboutin heels. She opted for a natural look with smoky eyes and wore her hair in a lose bridal pony with a crystal hairpiece for the finishing touch. “I chose the dress for it’s simple elegance. I felt really special in it,” Abi shares. Their daughter was transformed into a princess for the day in a cream dress with lace detailing to the bodice and a floral headband from Monsoon. When it came to the boys, Andy opted for a navy Hugo Boss suit and their son looked gorgeous in matching waistcoat and trousers from John Lewis.
LASTING MEMORIES For the flowers, Abi chose a beautiful, preserved bouquet in neutral tones. “I wanted to keep everything simple, and I was really pleased with the look. They’re now at home on our mantelpiece and will be a lasting memory of our day” she says. 37

REAL WEDDINGS TOP TIP: Keep everything simple and stress free. Dried flowers are great as it’s one less thing to worry about on the day and you can keep them forever! The ceremony was extra special for the duo as their daughter walked down the aisle to Isn’t She Lovely and their son handed them the rings. “Having them involved in such an intimate moment was amazing,” shares Abi. They finished their day at their house with loved ones and their friend who’s a DJ played music into the evening. “We were so thankful that our friends and family came together to help out with the last-minute plans. My sister decorated our house for when we got home, a friend got Champagne glasses at short notice, two friends did readings that we sprung on them the day before and I even had a surprise hen!” says Abi. “Our day was just perfect in every way. We were relaxed, happy, and surrounded by our closest friends and family.”

Abby and Nico tied the knot at the intimate Southwark Register Office followed by an impromptu shoot around the city Images courtesy of Creating Diamonds
N
ico first noticed Abby at the opposite side of the tube station on his daily commute. It wasn’t until he eventually took the plunge that their paths crossed. “Nico walked to my side of the railway and got on the same train (in the opposite direction of his commute) just to get my number!” shares Abby. When they eventually got talking, they found out that they lived 10 minutes away from each other and within a few months they’d started dating. “We realised that, even though we came from the opposite sides of the world, we had so much in common and so much to share.” Nico proposed on a trip to Amsterdam for Abby’s birthday. “We were taking in the sights, and I’d organised a tour of the diamond factory followed by dinner on a boat travelling through the canals. On the walk back to our hotel, we found ourselves on a bridge covered in romantic lights – it was there that I asked Abby to marry me,” Nico recalls. “I did my best to make it a surprise, but I was so nervous, I kept checking my pocket to make sure the ring was still there.” Abby suspected a proposal was on horizon. “I knew that he was going to ask me because every time he held my hand he was playing with my ring finger trying to measure it,” she says. They’d planned to bring their families together and tie the knot in Italy but the pandemic soon changed that! “We decided to celebrate our union in the country where we met and we’re so in love with London that it made sense,” Abby shares. They were joined by just three witnesses for their intimate ceremony and live streamed it to friends and family all over the world. Here, Abby tells us more about their day...
Due to the pandemic I couldn’t go shopping with my mother so instead I chose a dress that was similar to what she wore at her wedding. I opted for a vintage 50s style. 42
Our first walk as husband and wife on the Thames was very special. I added some touches of contemporary elegance with Swarovski jewellery, a veil fascinator and with Nico being Italian, I opted for Alevi Star Dorsay 80 Italian shoes, that were a pure joy.
Our day was a celebration of our union in this amazing city and our photos show just that.
Don’t stress about the small things. We were just being ourselves and in love.
REAL WEDDINGS
We wanted something discreet, and the Garden Room at Southwark Register Office was so intimate.
After our ceremony we took a stroll around London and enjoyed a romantic dinner close to the City Hall on the Thames. We dated there a lot when we first got together.
The Garden Room overlooked a beautiful reserved garden. It was one of the most exciting days of our life. We were both super nervous and emotional.
Our dinner was very intimate with just close friends and relatives. We booked a pod at Gaucho Restaurant; it was quite romantic.
Nico’s style was Italian with a touch of British and Asian. He wore a blue suit with a champagne waistcoat and a pair of braided leather loafers. He didn’t want to wear a tie, but instead opted for an Asian neckline for his shirt.

My best friend Tara thought our quirky sense of humour would be a good match and she was right,” Rosie shares. Seb’s surprise proposal came 18 months later during a trip to Scotland where Rosie’s from. “We’d gone to do a charity event and then went on to our favourite getaway destination in the heart of the Cairngorms to a stunning place called Killiehuntly,” she recalls. “He’d arranged for a pony picnic trek up into the hills where he’d hidden our friends, a bagpiper and an amazing lunch all inside an abandoned shepherd’s bothy.” Their wedding was originally planned to take place in a chateau in the South of France but as with so many other couples this had to be re-arranged. After yet another postponement they decided that they didn’t want to wait any longer and started to look closer to home. “It was complete luck that Chelsea Old Town Hall had one Saturday spot with an available registrar free, but it was in three weeks time,” Rosie recalls. Due to the tight timeframes, they decided to host the reception in their Wimbledon garden and with the help of their loved ones, they pulled it off to perfection. Here, Rosie shares all the details... We both felt incredibly overwhelmed by the love and gravity of the day. I don’t think we’ve ever smiled so much in our entire life.
Our catering was provided by the wonderful Olly Marlow who we met through a friend. He came to our rescue with the most incredible canapes and 3-course-meal.
In the evening we plugged in a playlist and let the ABBA songs blast out. Watching so many men sing and dance along was really funny.

REAL WEDDINGS
I arranged a bagpiper as a surprise for Seb at the ceremony, which brought tears to many eyes.
Arriving home to see all of our friends and family (and dogs) in our house waiting for us was incredible.
I accessorised with a pearl headband and short veil from our accessory collaboration with the talented Eli Peacock and shoes by Alaia.
I wore the Aleda dress from my own brand Rowley Hesselballe London. I have always loved this dress since the moment we designed it and to wear it on my own wedding day felt incredibly special. A string trio provided by the amazing Liquid Strings played during the drinks reception.
We had garlands of greenery for the garden and back doors and beautiful bright table centrepieces
Seb wore full Scottish dress with kilt, jacket and accessories from McCalls Highlandwear in Aberdeen, a lovely family business who managed to get a jacket to fit Seb in less than two weeks!
Our bridesmaids wore the Jemre and Jeylin dress from our bridesmaid collection at Rowley Hesselballe London.
We decided on a large floral arch at our front door to match back with the beautiful stained-glass windows we have on our house.

rganised by Angel Sinclair of Models of Diversity, the theme for this shoot was based around representation in the bridal industry. “The fashion industry’s made some positive and progressive changes in terms of diversity and inclusion, but we wanted to challenge the mainstream image of what society deems beautiful in the wedding world,” Angel explains. “In order to promote positivity and healthy self-esteem it’s important that everyone feels represented and with this stunning campaign we hope to provide a platform for people with disabilities to become more visible and redefine beauty in bridal.”

This disco-inspired styled shoot oozes energy, creativity and fun – just what we need to end the year in style! Images courtesy of Gemma Holly Wedding Photography
W
ild pinks, florals, 70s typography, neon and endless glitter set the scene for this disco-inspired wedding party. Denise Basya of Rock, Paper, Cloud got together with a team of local suppliers to bring her vision to life. “I wanted to inspire couples to break the boundaries. We don’t need to be limited to mainstream venues, colour palettes and traditional themes. I want couples to express themselves and treat the wedding party as a really great night out,” she shares. The heart of the shoot was the stationery with its retro design. “After the year we’ve had, we all feel the need for self-expression, fun and creativity, which is why I wanted to celebrate this era in my typography.”
51
NOSTALGIC VIBES Disco fonts were originally inspired by neon lights, which drew Denise to the chosen venue, Tonight Josephine, with its iconic neon sign Well behaved women rarely make history. To inject the energy and nostalgic vibes of a ‘70s disco, lightning bolt stencil place names doubled up as wedding favours for guests to take home. “We mounted the table plan to the ceiling using invisible wire rather than using a floor standing easel. I love to encourage couples to explore how signage is placed so that the focus is on the design,” explains Denise.

DISCO DÉCOR “For me, the whole look was a case of more is more! I loved the abundance of accessories we used to style the tablescape including gorgeous glitter, mini disco balls and pink plates,” says Denise. “Cascading florals were installed down the side of the table to act as a sweetheart setting and we combined dried and fresh flowers to create the bouquet that doubled up as a chair decoration.” The gorgeous Dior-inspired chairs complemented the venue and theme perfectly and when it came to a centrepiece, the drip cake stood proudly on a perspex stand with a stunning ombre tassel as its backdrop. “Bespoke candle shapes and colours are such a big trend this year so we created personalised candles with the names of the bride and groom that could also be used as place names,” adds Denise.
TOUCH OF GLAMOUR The dress portrayed the perfect balance of fun and glamour with its sparkly lining and soft tulle overlay. The cascading leaf design and hand beading twinkled under the neon lights and a disco-ball-inspired headband and matching earrings were the accessories of choice. The bride’s bouncy waves, smoky eyes and bronzed glowy skin finished the look perfectly. FLOWERS
Local florists share their seasonal favourites
ELOISE MCKINNA, GARAGE FLORALS “Using branches and twigs really adds to the wintry feel, especially the ones covered in lichen with tiny cones. Gorgeous birch branches manipulated into shapes, rosehips, gnarly willow, burnt ferns, berried and trailing ivy and waxy greens amongst light and deep browns really brings the vibe of forest walks and winter scenes. At this time of year we get some hardier but stunning blooms that really can push through the cracks. Hellebores, scented narcissi and incredible anemones to name a few. The
blend of these incredible woodland flowers and foliages, gives a stunning natural feel without your bouquet being too typical or ‘Christmassy’. Pine is a go-to for a seasonal feel, mixed with ivy, variegated holly, hardy eucalyptus and copper beech. We’re so lucky to have these incredible, wintry florals on our doorstep. Drying out grasses and ferns from the autumn will add to that seasonal, organic vibe and give your flowers a real woodland feel.” www.garageflorals.com
SAYEH RAFIEI, SAYEH & GALTON FLOWERS www.dorianedescamps.com
“For me there are two looks for winter weddings – cool and contemporary or rich and traditional. I love an all silver or antique gold colour with white flowers like amaryllis, dahlia and phal orchid or copper and gold together with deep red amaryllis and rich dahlia. Another favourite of mine is a dark pink phal orchid with red baccarà roses. Add in asparagus in silver, gold and copper for the finishing touch and if you’re wanting a real Christmas look, why not add in some baubles to your tablescape to complement your florals!” www.sayehgaltonflowers.com

“I love to use deep, moody shades as we move from autumn into winter. Dark reds and pinks take on a velvety texture which just looks so gorgeous and luxurious - especially once you add candlelight into the mix! I add dried elements along with grasses and berries to fresh flowers and foliage, for movement and lightness and to offset the deep shades.” https://grayandgreenery.com

RUTH DONOGHUE, MIMI FLEUR “I love creating an imaginative winter wonderland centrepiece for the most impressive tablescape. To create drama, combine elevated candles with seasonal flowers and foliage. Use accents of silver foliage with flowers, such as scented winter stock, snowy white amaryllis and fragrant narcissism and place all them in multiple bud vases to showcase their delicate qualities. For a more traditional festive extravaganza, use lashings of evergreen winter foliage to decorate the rooms or spaces in your venue where your guests are most likely to be and add some traditional festive decor in your getting-ready room for those all-important bridal prep photos. Green festive garlands with deep red roses can be placed on surfaces, such as fireplaces, wrapped around pillars and bannisters, draped around mirrors, and hung above tapestries and paintings. Then for a
luxurious feel, hang a statement wreath on your venue’s front door that makes a welcoming first impression for your seasonal celebrations.” http://mimifleur.co.uk
CATHERINE FOXELL, FLORAL EVOLUTION
https://www.weheartpictures.com
“My favourite winter flowers are anemones, ranunculus and paperwhites. I love these blooms as they’re delicate, ethereal and stunning. The ranunculus gets better with age and the masses of ruffled petals is unlike any other. To finish the look I’d use eucalyptus. Its blue-green colour and wonderful smell makes this a versatile popular foliage for winter weddings. There are many varieties and one of my favourites is eucalyptus parvifolia, which is a bit greener in appearance and has smaller leaves.” www.floralevolutionflowers.com

MICHELLE BROOM, OCCASIONS AND CELEBRATIONS “As a florist in the winter months I love using rich mulberry tones with dusty pink to add a softer touch. Teaming the flowers with scented foliage such as eucalyptus and pine cones creates a timeless yet modern look.” www.occasionsweddingflowers.co.uk

AMANDA AUSTIN, AMANDA AUSTIN FLOWERS “Seasonal foliage is huge! Imported varieties are very expensive, so my advice is to mix lots of English foliage to create the look you want. I love a pale grey theme in winter, as it gives you the feeling of snow and cold – my favourite is secnnecio. If we’re doing something a little more classic I add skimmia, the lovely red berries, to give a feeling of richness and Christmas without too many cones. I also love colour at this time of the year and using viburnum guelder shouts party to everyone. My favourite seasonal flowers are lilac, anemones, ranunculus and tulips. These are all classics that are full of life and hope.” https://amandaaustinflowers.co.uk
ELAINE GRAHAM, PESH FLOWERS
“When we think about winter and Christmas weddings, we turn traditional upside down and add a modern twist for beautiful florals that’ll last long past your special day. We like to focus on colours and texture and in the preserved world, all manner of flowers are available all-year-round. We love our white wedding range, which encapsulates the essence of glamour in an understated feel. Beautiful, preserved roses, textured cotton and tactile white foliage make this bouquet truly stunning. We’ve also recently designed a seasonal wedding bouquet with traditional reds and greens but adding peaches and black for a modern look. Preserved ivy with berries is a great option in table posies for winter with deep greens that you could add any coloured element to. We love using preserved and dried flowers as table settings as well as focal points in your venue. Styled stems can be so versatile – why not use your bridesmaid bouquets as centrepieces for example.” www.shida.florist

“White and lush dark greens are fabulous for winter weddings. Add in some texture with berries and silvery grey foliage for the perfect mix. If you want to warm it up a little add in a touch of blush nude using roses like quicksand. My favourite winter foliage is berried ivy for its shiny dark green leaves and rich green and black berries and eucalyptus for its silvery matt leaves. If you want to make it feel more festive you can add in some pine or conifer. These will also give you a wonderful scent. Some early spring flowers start to become available in December so we often add these as a nod to the coming season - amemone with their dramatic black centres are perfect alongside delicate bell shaped flowers of helebores.” https://peshflowers.co.uk

Lagos TO LONDON
LOCAL INSPIRATION
A bold and colourful palette brought Nigerian vibes in abundance to this stylish shoot

ynthia of CyEhis Events worked with a team of incredible London suppliers to bring her vision to life. “The shoot was inspired by the vibrant, colourful, rich and opulent Lagos lifestyle featuring a bold and vibrant colour palette and Gunnersbury Park London provided a beautiful backdrop,” shares Cynthia. The iconic Danfo yellow minibus was one of the main focal points of the shoot. “This idea was inspired by the fruit and vegetable markets in Lagos Nigeria that are bursting with bright colours and full of life,” she says. We created a bold cascading balloon display that naturally flowed down into the front seat of the bus, spilling onto the floor in a spectacular statement. The installation was adorned with a variety of roses, hydrangeas, gypsophila, moth orchids and gladiolus stems to complement the design and create more of a tropical look. The Ankara attires were designed exclusively by Cumo London brilliantly showcasing modern and contemporary Afro-chic fashion. The bride wore an off-shoulder mermaid style Ankara dress and the groom wore a matching smart Ankara shirt. The bridesmaids all wore the same print but with mismatched styles highlighting their individuality. 73
CEREMONY STYLING For the ceremony, the flowers took centrestage. The Orangery was transformed with softly structured, romantic floral displays on an acrylic mirrored floor using silk foliage and flowers in white and green. The aisle was lined with rose petals, floating candles and floral arrangements with draping crystals, creating a dreamy, enchanted look. “We chose this palette for the ceremony design to pay homage to the colours of the Nigerian flag,” says Cynthia The ceremony look for the bride was a princessstyle strapless dress with plunging neckline along with a delicate lace veil. The sleek chic updo and natural-toned make-up added glamour and was topped off with the oversized, show-stopping bouquet. The second look was more glamorous. A nontraditional gown with a front skirt slit that gave it the edge. The groom was styled in an exquisite black double-breasted two-piece suit and finished the look with a pair of classic formal patent black shoes.

LUXURIOUS ROMANCE The tablescape mirrored the overall vibrancy of the shoot. Tables were decorated with low level and tall floral arrangements, opulent candlesticks and gold reef glass charger plates and the luxury furniture added a romantic feel and a nod to the interior of the Gunnersbury Park Museum. “Suitcases were the inspiration for the cake as I wanted it to boldly reflect the Lagos to London concept,” says Cynthia. The four-tier design was complemented by an individual suitcase fondant cake. “The simplicity of the cream paired perfectly with the floral sheets and gold detailing brought the design together.”

Speak to any wedding make-up artist and they’ll most likely tell you that primer is a must, which is why I wanted to share with you my latest discovery: Super Facialist Skin Perfecting Primer (£17). This little beauty creates a flawless-looking complexion using trusted skincare ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, and colour-correcting pigments. It cleverly blurs imperfections by counteracting the three most common concerns of redness, sallowness and dullness, while simultaneously working to bring back skin’s natural radiance. BACK TO ITS ROOTS
Molton Brown was born in the 1970s as a hair salon based in the heart of London’s shopping district on South Molton Street, which was frequented by the Rolling Stones and many other icons of the day. Creators Caroline Bernstein and her husband would hand mix all formulations in the basement, with conscious care for the environment at the forefront of the brand’s values even then. Now, on the brand’s 50th anniversary it has re-introduced hair care to its range. The collection contains four tailored collections, each with a botanical at the core of its formulation: balancing, volumising, hydrating and repairing. This approach means you can strategically build a healthy-hair routine into your big-day prep depending on the needs of your locks. Check out www.moltonbrown.co.uk

EDITOR LOVES
In my humble opinion Kristin Ess The One Signature Shampoo and The One Signature Conditioner are nothing short of miraculous! I won’t lie, my hair was in an embarrassing state when I decided to give these a go. I’d been swimming three days on the bounce – down water slides, through rapids, the works! My locks were a huge matted, straw-like mess. But with just one application the shampoo lathered like a dream and after leaving the conditioner in for the recommended three minutes, even wet my hair started to feel less knotty. I usually dread having to drag the brush through my hair after I’ve washed it, but in no time flat it was knot-free, smooth and ready to dry. Shiny, soft and looking their best, the state of my locks pre-Kristin Ess were a distant memory. This is definitely my new favourite hair routine and at £8 each they won’t break the bank. My advice? Head over to www.boots.com and pop them in your basket immediately!
NATURE’S HARVEST
When Estée Lauder created Youth-Dew bath oil in 1953, she revolutionised the fragrance industry and 75 years later, the brand is carrying on her legacy with the introduction of a new luxury fragrance collection. Each of the eight scents is inspired by nature’s most breathtaking moments such as the radiance of a sunset and the mystery of a moonlit flower. What’s more, Estée Lauder’s new ScentCapture Fragrance Extender technology is specially formulated to allow each perfume to last up to 12 hours after a single application – that should get you from vows to dancefloor no problem. The new Luxury Fragrance Collection (£130 100ml, £68 40ml) is available at Estée Lauder counters nationwide and at www.esteelauder.co.uk

They say the eyes are the window to the soul, so they’re for sure a feature to make the most of on the big day. Q&A Look the best version of you with our expert advice
REVITALISE AND REJUVENATE Q – My skin tends to go really dry during the colder months. What skincare regime would you suggest? It’s really important to make changes to your skincare regime and habits depending on the season. Skin can seem more sensitive in colder months and products that worked well for you in the summer, especially heavily fragranced serums or creams, can start to feel like irritants. Needing to treat dryer skin during the colder months is very common. Remember, each time you wash your face, you strip your skin of the natural oils that help lock in moisture, so we must help to replace these oils, especially in winter. As well as using a rich moisturiser after cleansing, there are deeper treatments you can carry out such as overnight masques, which help to revitalise skin while you sleep. Of course, don’t forget to hydrate from the inside too by drinking plenty of water. Finally, I’d always recommend seeing a skincare specialist or dermatologist a few months ahead of your wedding to seek professional advice and expert knowledge on the best products to use for your personal skin type, as everyone’s different. Gabrielle Staniszewska Hair and Make-up by Gabrielle www.hairbygabrielle.co.uk 78
BRIDAL GLOW Q – Can you advise on some winter looks and products for my big-day makeover? Smoky eyes always look good at this time of the year. We’re indoors more and artificial light can make it look like you’ve got less make-up on so smoky eyes give a more defined look. The light’s quite cold in winter so choose rich colours like soft browns and burgundy to warm up your skin tone. It’s also nice to add a little bit of sparkle on your eyes – if you have candlelight in your venue, it’ll shimmer perfectly. For lips I’d be braver in winter. Choose a nice burgundy or red and if you do go neutral, opt for something with a bit of pop like Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk or Encore by Cosmetics A La Carte. Both are nudes but a deeper pink so your lips will stand out whatever the weather. When it comes to your foundation, I’d recommend warming up your skin tone very slightly for that bridal glow and use a good coverage product. I like Cosmetics A La Carte Flawless Foundation as it glides on easily, is great for all ages and lasts all day. If you have open pores that can be exasperated by colder weather, apply Benefits Porefessional just before your foundation for a nice base to even out the skin. From the INSIDE OUT
We caught up with owner and founder of Simone Thomas Wellness, Simone herself, to discover how taking care of yourself from the inside out is the ultimate path to wedding wellness
T
he impact stress and anxiety can have on our bodies should never be underestimated. So, the pandemic has a lot to answer for, even outside of Covid itself. If you’re finding that months of lockdown and wedding-related stress have taken their toll, you’re certainly not alone. Sadly, anxiety-induced skin concerns and even hair loss can quickly leave you feeling pretty far from your big-day best. Enter award-winning authority on hair health and wellness Simone Thomas, who’s spent her career sharing her expertise in nutrition, hairloss and bio-energetics. Alongside hair salons and hair-loss clinics, which boast an elite global clientele that includes royalty, celebrities and CEOs; she’s also the founder of Simone Thomas Wellness. We asked Simone for her help in guiding you back onto the path of wedding wellness. Based on your experience, what challenges are nearlyweds facing in the aftermath of the pandemic? 2020 had a huge affect on the wedding industry with 64 per cent of big days being cancelled or postponed, which means stress levels for everyone involved are now at an alltime high. A wedding is an important day that couples have invested a lot of time and money in, it’s something they’ve dreamed of. So, this is all having a negative impact on how we feel and how we sleep, with our skin and hair responding to that. A bad hair or skin day isn’t great at any time, let alone when the camera is constantly on you and you want to feel your best. What the last year has taught us though is
80
WELLNESS INTERVIEW to start working on yourself? You don’t have to go all out, but you might start looking at a nutrition plan, exercising or having hydra facials. However, I fully recognise there may be financial restraints, so this might not always be possible. In which case, I’d say three months is optimal, but the minimum is six weeks in advance. This way there’s time to flush out any nasties and create balance allowing the body to become stronger and progress. Many tell me they start to see a difference within two weeks. how to take a step back and invest in ourselves, as we often don’t listen to what our bodies need. At Simone Thomas Wellness, we’ve seen a huge increase in clients asking for advice on nutrition and bioenergetics, as well as hair loss. There’s also been a rise in skin conditions like psoriasis, acne, dermatitis of the scalp, eczema, telogen effluvium and alopecia areata, which is commonly linked to stress and hormones. In fact, stress has a huge knock on effect on our hormones as women. But men too are experiencing skin complaints and suffering hair loss. So, people preparing for their big days have really been struggling during lockdown. How can we turn this around – where do we start? What I always say is that everything starts in the gut. If you look after that, the body will look after you. I call it The Mothership. Poor gut health is the start of disease and can be linked to degenerative disorders, so it really should be the number one priority if you’re looking to feel the best version of yourself. Everyday Wellness, part of the Simone Thomas Wellness range, is a super-strength probiotic supplement containing six types of probiotics to improve gut health by introducing both good and bad bacteria, vital on a day-today basis. When I say “bad bacteria” people often ask me, why anyone would want that, but the body needs diversity to become stronger. These supplements also help to reduce the inflammation that occurs naturally in a body. Food can be a trigger, as can poor sleep patterns, stress, and the environment. Here, we’re focusing on removing any nasties so they don’t get absorbed into the cells. What advice would you give to those looking to achieve that natural-looking bridal glow without a face full of make-up? Skin Quencher is great for anyone wanting to feel youthful or who’s keen to avoid wearing lots for make-up. It’ll work from the inside out to give you that ultimate bridal glow. I’m also a huge fan of facials, but it’s more about what we put into our body rather than what we put on top of it. You have to work on yourself internally for the outside to glow. Yes, skincare products are going to have an effect, but if the inside isn’t right, it won’t be long term.
Biotin Brilliance too helps with mild skin irritation caused by stress. You may already have heard about biotins, they’re a B vitamin and have been talked about for a number of years as being vital for healthy skin, hair and nails. What can you suggest for brides, and bridesmaids, looking to grow their hair for a wedding? Our Ginkgo Biloba B+ plan contains folic acid with essential B vitamins and biotin, but if you don’t suffer from tiredness, then the biotin haircare plan is great for maintenance. Alternatively, if you have no specific worries about hair loss, but want to feel the best version of yourself, taking no chances with stress, Skin Quencher is great too. These plans are also great for grooms concerned about hair loss. What are the benefits of a haircare plan versus a single supplement? I formulated the plans because I learnt from experience that most people’s concept of what’s healthy actually isn’t. Most of us will happily invest in skincare and clothes, but not in how we feel internally. I think of the plans as a three-step process, much like a garden. To grow beautiful flowers, you need sunlight, amazing soil, and water. So, the probiotics are the ultimate go to, but there’s no point if you’re a fan of microwave meals or Macdonald’s. Unless you cook from scratch, you’re throwing away the goodness you’re putting into the body with the probiotics. Pairing them with Super Greens and Ginkgo Biloba B+ or Biotin Brilliance is then all about preparing the gut, balancing the body and removing toxins, as well as making sure you create the best environment for vitamin and mineral absorption. The most important step though is water: filtered versus tap, glass bottle versus plastic. Purely because of what can be absorbed through plastic as well as unfortunately what’s in mainstream water that comes through the tap.
Tell us a bit about the company’s ethos. Supplements are a big industry, but they’ve often received bad press because the products simply don’t do what they claim to. So, these are all things we’ve addressed across everything we do from the ingredients to manufacturing. We make sure that every process has full certification, including soil association and vegan accreditation. We’ve worked hard to ensure our products are vegan and our marine collagen is protected and sourced ethically. Everything is sustainable as much as possible. When our bottles are finished with they get made into tiles and flooring, and the packaging too is eco-friendly. Even the energy used in my office is renewable. We’re proud of the fact that recently we were responsible for 25 trees being planted in the rainforest due to our renewable energy contract.
WANT TO KNOW MORE? Simone’s book, Healthy Hair Happy Body, contains her comprehensive and motivational plan to transform wellbeing from the inside out. In each chapter she introduces concepts that provide insight into how the body functions, and what really makes a difference to achieving optimum health, sharing how tiny adjustments over time can lead to better results. It’s available at www.amazon.co.uk, priced at £15, with £1 going to Motor Neurone Disease Association. The Biotin Haircare Plan, £70; The Ginkgo Haircare Plan, £70; and SkinQuencher, £35 by Simone Thomas Wellness, are all available at https://simonethomaswellness.com
When would be the ideal time to start taking supplements in order to feel wedding-ready? To me there’s never a day too early! Most couples will start planning a year to two years in advance, so why not use the same timeline 81

Dress to impress BRIDAL FAVOURITES
BRIDESMAID LUXE Rewritten has nine different styles of dresses and jumpsuits for your bridesmaids, that come in a range of colours, which are perfect for all shapes and sizes. Our favourite style is our Brooklyn dress, which is a slip style. It may at first glance, look like it’s only suitable on a slimmer body shape, but we love how our bustier or curvier ladies feel in the Brookyln. The dress comes with a sash that can be worn around the waist to enhance your curves, or around the neck as an accessory with an attitude. Check out the Brooklyn style dress in our traditional Crepe fabric, or our satin fabric for an ultra-luxe look. Ella Yeoman | Rewritten Bridesmaids https://wearerewritten.com
At Tala Daniel Bridal Couture, we have such an incredible selection that picking a favourite can be a real challenge! But with that said, we absolutely love a versatile gown and one of our newest additions is our Alexandria dress. A dreamy tulle and sequin A-line gown with a long sleeve one shoulder neckline that’s detachable, making for a fun transition from day to night. To accessorise this gown we’d recommend a pair of statement drop earrings with a classy updo, a few diamante studded hair pins and a subtle one-tier veil to complete the look. Rim Abi Lmona | Tala Daniel Bridal Couture | www.taladaniel.co.uk
After 28 years in the business, what makes my work so interesting is seeing how gowns look completely different on each bride. What suits one girl doesn’t suit the next. It’s wonderful when it all comes together to give the wow-effect when the colour, shape, fabric and detail all combine to become the perfect dress. I love our Camelia design as it has so many different looks in one dress. There are three parts to the design. The base dress is luxurious sandwashed silk satin with guipure waist band. On its own it’s an elegant demure dress but add the overskirt and it becomes a dreamy creation to waft around the room, then add the detachable organza train and the dress takes on a different dimension suitable for any castle or cathedral to walk the stately aisle. The train can also be worn with the straight dress giving another look. The only problem being the bride might be late getting to the ceremony if she still can’t decide which pieces to wear together. Camelia is a design from our Couture Collection and can be customised. Joyce Young | Joyce Young Collections | www.joyceyoungcollections.co.uk 82

The makeover
TOP MAKE-UP HACKS 1. Always start with the smoky eyes! When I do this, clients think I’m mad because I haven’t started with their face. By doing your eye make-up first, any fallout or mascara spillages that might happen are easy to clean up before you put your primer on. It allows you to make a beautiful base with no marks or smears, providing the most flawless finish. 2. To make sure your look stays in place for the duration, use a primer at the beginning and a setting spray at the end of your application – both are so important. 3. Use your lipstick as a cream blush. This helps tie in all the tones that you’ve applied to your face. It also means you have a 2-in-1 product and it’s one less item in your handbag. Take it out with you, just run your finger across the bullet of the lipstick and dab it across the apples of your cheeks. Don’t forget to use the Beauty Hygiene Plus Quick Dry Makeup Sanitising Mist to make sure your lipstick and any other make-up is sanitised before use, especially when topping up on the go. Lisa Armstrong | Make-up Artist and Brand Ambassador for Beauty Hygiene Plus | www.beautyhygieneplus.com
HAIR SOS My favourite bridal hair look is modern elegance with a relaxed, undone twist. It’s not too formal and enhances the natural beauty. You can make it look even more special with a floral or crystal hairpiece. When it comes to looking after your hair, the biggest piece of advice I have is not to go it alone. Professionals are there to help you achieve the most beautiful look for your wedding. Around six months before the big day, get in touch with a hair stylist for guidance on the best routine for your hair type. You should also consider a deep conditioning treatment around two weeks before, to make sure that your hair’s in great condition. I’d always recommend booking a hair trial – that’s where I advise on the most suitable colour and cut to have, so my brides can achieve the look they have in mind. Finishing touches THIS SEASON’S MUST-HAVES
TIMELESS DIAMONDS To create a stunning and timeless bridal jewellery style, certain essential pieces will not only take you effortlessly from ceremony to reception, but are so elegant and versatile that you can enjoy wearing them time and time again after your special day. For example, diamond huggie earrings combined with a classic tennis bracelet will pull together a simple yet luxurious bridal look. If you’re undecided between small and larger earrings, or you want both styles so you can change looks from day to evening, then a pair of transformable diamond earrings are a smart investment — turning them from dainty studs to dramatic drops. Finally, a couple’s exchange of wedding bands is one of the most emotional and symbolic moments of their day. As diamonds represent everlasting love, a wedding band set with sparkling diamonds in handcrafted gold or platinum will look and feel incredibly special alongside your engagement ring. Debbie Schogger | The Diamond Store www.thediamondstore.co.uk
Hoop earrings - The classic hoop earring has become a staple in every jewellery box and is set to lead this autumn/ winter accessory trend. Thanks to their versatility and easy maintenance, a good hoop completes a casual or party look with ease. A great example is the Delicate Prong Setting Open End Diamond Hoop Earrings. Celestial Jewellery - As the nights grow darker, the biggest emerging jewellery trend shines a light on celestial jewellery that sees stars, moons and black diamonds dominate shopping baskets. If you’re after some wedding inspiration, why not try the Halo Engagement Black Diamond Ring. Floating diamond necklace - Striking a minimalist showpiece during the glitz and glamour of the Christmas party season is the elegant floating diamond necklace. Kept pared-back, with a simple cable chain so as not to distract from the glittering diamond. Lab-grown diamonds - With the global supply of mined diamonds decreasing, now more than ever, it’s imperative for companies to opt for lab-grown diamonds instead. Not only is it an environmentally conscious choice as it’s protecting the planet’s natural resources, but it’s a more affordable option for consumers, too. Check out the stunning Princess Shape Pave Setting Diamond Ring pictured. Nilesh Rakholia | ABELINI Jewellery | www.abelini.com
HATS OFF TO YOU My must-have fashion piece is always a hat. Whether at a wedding, the races, a party or another special occasion, hats are always a wonderful addition to the day. Not only do they add the finishing touch to an outfit, but they can also make you stand tall, and feel even more beautiful. Typically, headpieces, halo hat designs and fascinators are worn at weddings and larger sculptural hats are favoured for a day at the races. The colour you choose will depend on the outfit you’re wearing as well as your skin tone. Fair skin tones look great in cool and ashy coloured pieces, tanned skin is complemented with beiges and honeys, and dark skin tones look incredible with bright bursts like yellow, turquoise, red and green. Your face shape can also determine which headpiece will look best. Those with long faces look great in oversized designs, rounded faces should opt for an angular style and square faces can be softened with rounded hats. Play around with your hat choice, be brave with colours, stand tall and wear it proud. Katherine Elizabeth | Katherine Elizabeth Millinery | www.katherineelizabethhats.com 85

SEASONAL SHOOT

DECADENT BAKE Q – We want the perfect winter cake. What flavours would you suggest, and do you have any design tips? Seasonal wedding cakes are a perfect way to incorporate winter style and flavours. While Christmas-themed weddings may seem an obvious choice, winter weddings are an opportunity to feature bold jewel tones such as emerald, plum, deep reds and navy blue and adorned with berries, seasonal flowers or painted in gold, warmer rose gold or cool silver. For brides who love a bit of bling, cake designs with beading or crystals also make a statement, with crystal cake stands bringing a decadent and impactful look. When it comes to flavours, an all-time favourite like chocolate, can be paired with one of the following buttercream and/or jam seasonal fillings: peppermint, praline, blood orange, or pomegranate. You could also incorporate warm spices such as cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg or cardamom into your cake batter or fillings to surprise and delight your guests. Red velvet is another winter flavour favourite both for its colour and the hint of cocoa powder. The ultimate winter flavour must be fruit cake but not how your grandma used to make it. The modern take incorporates healthy and immune-boosting acai berries, dried cranberries, goji berries and golden berries in addition to the traditional fruit commonly used. Elizabeth Solaru | Elizabeth’s Cake Emporium www.elizabethscakeemporium.com
Q – We’re looking for a venue that we can make our own. How can we turn a blank canvas into a cosy winter backdrop? Lighting is everything! We have lovely strip lights running around the main event space that look great on their own, but even better when accompanied with big festoons for that winter fairytale vibe. Lit lanterns dotted on tables really finish the look and add twinkles all around the space. With the dark nights coming earlier, having uplighters is a sure way to transform a space from daytime Narnia to party in no time. Overhead lights off, uplighters on! It’s also a great way to bring in your personality with your favourite colours echoing around the room. Take it a step further and opt for projectors, mimicking a mystical night sky on the ceiling – simply magical! Jordan Crowley | Core Clapton | www.coreclapton.org
Q – With darker evenings and colder climes I’m worried that we’ll have fewer options for our photos. What do you advise? A winter wedding spells magic and mystery, but there are some key things that you need to consider. You’ll have less hours of light to work with so if you’re a fan of naturally lit images, be sure to schedule your ceremony earlier to make the most of those daylight hours. If you love sunset shots, there are some spectacular skies at this time of year. Just make sure you check all timings with your photographer and schedule your day accordingly. It’ll be chillier, but what a great excuse to wear a fabulous white faux-fur coat or dazzling coloured pashmina. If we’re blessed with snow this can be a stunning look. Couple with some beautiful seasonal flowers and against a white backdrop, you’ll truly pop in your images. If you don’t get snow arrange a post-wedding shoot when we have some of the stuff around. Yes, it means getting suited and booted again but, in my opinion, totally worth it! You’ll have your dream winter wedding images with that magical white background to treasure forever. Finally, always hire a professional. We’re trained to deal with low-light conditions. Christine Constantine | Christine Constantine Photography www.christineconstantine.co.uk
ASK THE EXPERTS MUM’S THE WORD Q – My mum doesn’t want to cover her gorgeous outfit with a woolly overcoat. What seasonal looks would you suggest? If you’re attending a winter wedding, it’s a good idea to plan a complete outfit rather than throwing on a coat over your gorgeous dress. We have lots of outfits that incorporate the coat. Wool coats with velvet or fur trims are very luxurious so you’ll look stunning at the ceremony and elegant when the coat comes off at the reception. Jewel colours are rich and warm for the colder months, but winter white can look spectacular. We love this swing coat with faux fur collar and cuffs over a sparkly beaded dress. Having an outfit designed and made to fit perfectly gives so much confidence. We have samples in our shops of all the designs on our website and these can be customised to suit each individual client. We’ve dressed thousands of mothers over the past 28 years, so our staff are highly experienced to recommend the best style to flatter every shape. Joyce Young | Joyce Young Collections www.joyceyoungcollections.co.uk
BRIDAL ELEGANCE Q – I want a gorgeous strapless dress but really feel the cold! How can I be warm without sacrificing on style? Whilst most of our brides stay warm simply with adrenaline and excitement of the big day, occasionally the cold does sneak up on us. So, to reignite the warmth within, our Henrietta gown is the perfect solution. A phenomenally beautiful mermaid silhouette beaded from top to toe with a pattern you won’t find elsewhere. This gown is super versatile giving our brides the option of having a strapless deep-v sweetheart neckline or having the addition of off-the-shoulder cap sleeves and if that isn’t enough it even comes with detachable off-shoulder sleeves. As this gown follows no rules with traditional lace or appliques, it’s a dream to accessorise. Use a faux fur shrug for the evening adding a little warmth, giving a touch of class and elegance whilst not compromising on the style of the dress. Pair the gown with subtle pear drop earrings, a delicate tennis bracelet and voila, you’re ready! Rim Abi Lmona | Tala Daniel Bridal Couture | www.taladaniel.co.uk 87

Dave and I were unsure if we wanted to book a pre-wedding shoot as we don’t like our picture being taken and can be quite awkward in front of the camera. I spoke to a few of our married friends and they all recommended booking a shoot, so we decided to go for it. As we got engaged during the last lockdown, we had only met our photographer once over Skype, so we felt the shoot would also be a good way of getting to know him better ready for our big day. We’d arranged to meet on a beach in Kent, and as I’m sure you can tell from the pictures, it was extremely blustery and cold, so much so we were convinced we would appear blue
in the final shots! Although it wasn’t the perfect weather conditions, the combination of our windswept appearence – my hair must have looked like Medusa – onlookers and relaxed nature of our photographer made the shoot fun! I was very nervous beforehand, changing my outfit 10 times much to Dave’s annoyance, but once we were there we both felt at ease and had a great time. If you’re debating booking a shoot, I’d highly recommend it.
ACCESSORISE AND SHINE Wedding planning has been pretty straightforward overall, but when it came to choosing my accessories, I felt very overwhelmed. I wouldn’t describe myself as particularly girly, but I wanted something that would make me look beautiful on the day without being overpowering. After hours of shopping, I surprised myself by discovering I have a hidden love for pearls, so when I came across a pearl and floral hair clip, I just knew that I had to have it! I’m planning to finish my look with a pair of pearl earrings and a pendant necklace. My shoes have also been difficult. I’m 5ft 2ins and Dave is more than 6ft tall, so I was debating whether to wear heels to make the height difference less apparent. All the heels that I loved were really expensive and I was beginning to have nightmares about falling over as I walked down the aisle – I’m not the most gracious person even in flats! So, after looking at countless websites and going into what feels like every shoe shop in Essex, I finally decided to embrace my height and purchased a pair of glittery trainers with satin laces from Kate Spade. Although different to what I had orginally envisaged, I think the look suits my dress and it’s made me feel more relaxed knowing I won’t be going to A&E on the big day. Lastly, Dave and I went ring shopping – a traditonal wedding element we still wanted
for our nuptials. When we arrived at the jewellers, which was the same branch that Dave purchased my engagement ring from, I was pleasantly surprised to learn they had a matching wedding ring that I, of course, had to have. Luckily we are months ahead of our wedding, however we were made aware that some ring designs can take up to four months to arrive in the store – take note readers that are planning last-minute ‘I dos’! Dave never wears jewellery, so he was unsure of what style he wanted and all of the different types of metal and cuts were quite overwhelming for him. After doing some research and asking our friends for their opinions, he decided on a plain platinum band that looks great. Make sure you check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the perfect entertainment.

his year has flown by, can you believe it’s nearly Christmas? It’s starting to dawn on me that this is my last as a Miss – eek – and July will creep around quickly so the countdown is officially on! My fiancé, Dave, and I have booked most of our suppliers including the venue, photographer and florist and I’ve even found my dress – but there’s still plenty to do! We’re getting really excited as the day draws closer, and the more I write about all of your beautiful weddings, the more real it seems that we will have our very own wedding day. In this issue, read all about our pre-wedding shoot and my search for the perfect accessories.

BRIDE’S DIARY
We’ve ordered wooden cutouts of our guests’ names to be used as place names. They look really cute and double up as favours.
Originally, we didn’t want light-up letters, but after seeing a set-up at one of our venue’s wedding shows, we loved the look and have hired them.
Dave and I have purchased an oak direction sign that will greet our guests as they enter our venue.
Although I was against the idea of wearing a veil, I tried one on with my dress and fell in love.
We came across a local company that creates personalised cake toppers, so we’ve decided to order one with figures of us and our cat.
Our venue offers guests a choice of ribbons when they enter the venue, pink if they want people to keep their distance, green if they’re comfortable to shake hands and blue if they are happy to hug. I think it’s a great way of making sure that everyone feels happy and safe on the day.
We’re planning to buy personalised cufflinks for Dave and his best man.
I love this buttonhole wrapped in twine and am going to ask our florist if she can do the same.
For our tables, we’re purchased concrete planters that are shaped like characters from our favourite films and tv shows to add a personal touch to the day. 89
