Tilgate Park Weddings A VENUE LIKE NO OTHER

MAZE • NATURE CENTRE • BEAUTIFUL LAWNS • STUNNING LAKES • ANCIENT WOODLANDS • OUTDOOR OR INDOOR • CEREMONY OPTIONS

Tilgate Park has long been known as a top visitor destination in the heart of the south. Fans come from far and wide to enjoy more than 200 acres of woodland, gardens, lakes and even a mini zoo. Now this beautiful venue has opened its doors for unique weddings.

THE WALLED GARDEN

Be amongst be the first to is th in d marrie g in n in award-w e venu

Playing host to peaceful formal gardens and ponds, an evergreen hedge maze, events arena and cafe, the Walled Garden is the perfect location for celebrations like yours. Entering the magnificent tall wooden gates of the Walled Garden, it’s like stepping into a secret garden, being greeted by a 40-metre long pergola of beautiful wisteria, roses, clematis and grape vines all adorned with thousands of fairy lights. The Family Garden within has been transformed into a magical private garden, able to seat up to 100 guests either side of the aisle leading to a wooden arbour where the ceremony can take place. Afterwards, it’s the ideal location to serve your guests with some prereception drinks whilst you take the opportunity to explore the rest of the park with your photographer. For something different, animal lovers may want to visit the Nature Centre to take photos with the adorable tapir or the fun-loving meerkats.

EVENTS ARENA

The perfect location to host a large marquee for your wedding breakfast and evening reception. Measuring more than 1,000 square metres, there’s ample room for extra entertainment like a band or giant garden games and it is conveniently located next to the evergreen hedge maze where both young and old enjoy finding each other around every twist and turn. Although there’s no guarantee that the sun will shine, we have the advantage of The Barn, which is licensed, so you can choose to move indoors if you prefer.

s the wedding industry gathers momentum once more as we head into 2022, it feels like the weeks and months are flying by in a blur. Here we are, in the midst of autumn already and when deciding what to bring you this issue, I drew inspiration from somewhere dear to my heart, somewhere that comes alive at this time of year – Sussex, of course! I might be a tad biased here, but where else in the land could you find such a harmonious blend of quirky and traditional, town and country, seaside and woodland? There’s so much diversity within these borders that your wedding dreams can come true, whatever they may be. So, let’s celebrate that and discover how you don’t have to set foot too far from your own back yard to find an autumnal wedding paradise. I’ve rounded up my highlights across these pages – a tour of the county as viewed through wedding-tinted glasses if you will! I hope you enjoy and until next time, keeep planning!

Oh we do like to be beside the seaside, and Eastbourne is just stunning. If, like me, you’ve got the sea air in your blood, saying “I do” by the coast may feel like the natural thing to do, whatever your personal style – boho, classic or red carpet: they all work in this charismatic setting.

MAKING THE DREAM WORK

The team at Q Hair and Beauty, Chichester, had cause to celebrate when the winners of the Salon Business Awards ‘21 were announced recently, having scooped the title of Salon Team in the face of strong competition. Salon Business publishing editor Joanne Charlton says, “Yet again Q Hair and Beauty has demonstrated that coming together as a team amplifies the talents and success of individual members, to enrich the lives of staff and clients alike. From organising team events, to supporting each other through what has been a very difficult 19 months, the Q team has smashed it and fully deserves this accolade.” Check out https://qhairandbeauty.co.uk

COSY UP IN THE COUNTRY

Southend Barns in Chichester, West Sussex has just launched a new accommodation offer with its quirky Shepherd’s Hut. Set in the alpacas’ grazing field with its own festoon-lit private pathway and rustic garden, the Mama Lou Shepherd’s Hut has a gorgeously luxurious feel for guests to relax. Why not enjoy the picturesque views of the landscaped gardens and countryside as you sit on the patio enjoying a glass of local Tinwood sparkling wine? On the other hand, if a hot drink is more your style, you can indulge in a perfectly made latte from the Nespresso machine with homemade shortbread and truffles. Mama Lou has all the facilities you need for a relaxing break, including a king size bed, soft robes and towels, power shower and sumptuous Cowshed products. The heated hut comes complete with an iPad and Netflix, which you can enjoy as you nestle in front of the wood burner. In the fridge, there'll be a bottle of chilled prosecco, fresh juice and milk for morning coffee. The team at Roots Catering will also deliver a breakfast bag full of homemade treats. With weddings on hold throughout most of 2020 the team at entertainment provider, Toast, made the best use of their time and energy to rebrand and relaunch the company’s website. Director Nathan Evans says, “The logo, colour palette and web build were all deeply considered and had meaning embedded into every inch.” The say every picture tells a story and this is certainly the case for Toast’s new logo. In fact, the shape of the A tells us a lot about the business’ ethos. Nathan explains, “When a client contacts us, we guide them through the whole process from start to finish, finding the right performer for their event. The path that takes us on from start to finish represents the journey we make with our couples. The extended middle lines in the A gives it an extra sense of movement, just as if it’s dancing – a link to the celebration aspect of what we do. The triangle represents the three key pillars of our company values: excellence, reliability and honesty. Finally, the overall logotype celebrates the three main areas of the business: weddings, parties and corporate events, and the three lines throughout signify the knowledge and expertise we bring through into all of these areas. They also reflect the collaboration between Toast, our clients and our performers.” Indeed, it’s this kind of detailed and creative approach that allows the team to provide amazing experiences for their clients. What’s more, the exciting entertainment roster has been revamped, find out more at www.toastlive.co.uk

Leading Lady Cakes is a name inspired by owner Annie Bennett’s love of opera. In fact, this supertalented lady is a fully-trained soprano and has sung lead roles across the South East for a number of years. Previously a primary teacher, East Sussex-based Annie launched her cake business in 2014 and now specialises in big-day bakes adorned in sugar flowers. She loves nothing more than creating roses, lilies, peonies, poppies and a whole host of other blooms to top her stunning showstoppers. We recently asked Annie for her top tip when it comes to finding the right professional to make your sweet dreams comes true. She told us, “Do your research and find a baker whose portfolio makes your heart sing. Most professionals won’t copy other designs exactly, so give them your ideas and let them create something special just for you.” We’ve partnered with Leading Lady Cakes to offer you a 10% discount when you place your order before the closing date below. WEDDING VENUES

TOWN AND

country

Whether you dream of a secluded rural idyll or hope for an accessible urban spot Sussex has a wedding venue for you

SICS

COUNTRY CLAS GREAT BETLEY FARMHOUSE

07899 664 070 | www.greatbetleyfarmhouse.co.uk Nestled among the beautiful Sussex countryside with sweeping views across the South Downs, Great Betley Farm is an outdoor venue that allows you to host your wedding, your way. With five acres spread over two connected fields at your disposal there’s plenty of space for the marquee or tipi of your choice as well as guest parking, camping and glamping. Plus, from the second field there’s an uninterrupted view of the South Downs and Iron Age hill fort of Chanctonbury Ring.

THE “I DOS” The venue doesn’t hold a ceremony license, so the formalities would need to be taken care of elsewhere. However, you can still have a celebrantled ceremony on the big day. There’s a pretty pond by the front lawn, which is a lovely spot for this and can host 200. Alternatively, the Event Field can accommodate 350.

THE CELEBRATIONS Your reception here would be held in a marquee or tipi on the Event Field. The official capacity is 350, but the limit really is determined by the temporary event notice and the size of canvas chosen.

THERE’S MORE! You’ll have exclusive use of the venue for 48 hours giving you plenty of time to set up, break down and have a rip-roaring time in between. You’re also offered two nights accommodation in the farmhouse’s four double bedrooms on a bed and breakfast basis. On-the-day coordination is available too.

PEELINGS MANOR BARNS 07933 092 102 | https://peelingsmanorbarns.co.uk

THE CELEBRATIONS Receptions take place in the Flint Barn, which has capacity for 100 guests for a sit-down wedding breakfast, and 200 across the whole venue for the evening.

THERE’S MORE! You won’t be tied to any preferred suppliers and services, so you’re able to shape your own personal vision of your big day, with freedom of choice.

www.amymurrell.co.uk

Peelings Manor Barns is the ideal DIY venue, offering a perfect blank canvas for wedding receptions. The manor of Peeling is mentioned in the Domesday Book, but there’s been a settlement on the site since AngloSaxon times. The earliest surviving part of the manor house dates from the late 15th-century, and the farm buildings from the 1850s. Located in Hankham, just outside Eastbourne, the space includes the stunning, Grade II listed, traditional Sussex flint barn, barnyard, cloisters, and access to a site at the back of the barn should you wish to extend the space with a marquee.

SOUTH LODGE 01403 891 711 | www.exclusive.co.uk/south-lodge South Lodge offers a tasteful balance of traditional and modern design seamlessly blending the old with the new. Located in the heart of the Sussex Downs and set within 93 acres of parkland, you and your guests can enjoy the striking scenery whatever the season. The sweeping drive leads to the neo-Jacobean house, which has been sympathetically extended to create a location for either a formal wedding celebration or a fun festival-style wedding set in the Lower Lodge Meadow.

THE “I DOS” You have a choice of four ceremony spots with capacity for four to 180 guests. The Wordsworth Suite (80-180 guests) is situated on the hotel’s lower ground floor and has patio doors that lead on to the terrace where loved ones can mingle. Glyndebourne (51-80 guests) can be found on the first floor. It has double aspect windows and a long walkway for 20

a dramatic bridal party entrance. Goodwood, on the first floor, is the most intimate (4-50 guests) and offers the option of a long or short aisle. Finally for the vows, there’s the Wedding Pavilion (180 guests). Dressed to impress in a red carpet it offers the option of open-air “I dos” with the 19th-century building in the background.

THE CELEBRATIONS Larger receptions are hosted in Gladstone (50-180 guests). This is a banqueting room that boasts triple-aspect windows, high ceilings, beautiful chandeliers and views of the South Downs. Plus, its neutral colour palette means it’s easy to incorporate your own theme. Alternatively, Disraeli (10-50 guests) is ideal for intimate celebrations and offers access to a private terrace.

THERE’S MORE! Also on site is The Spa at South Lodge, the perfect place for some prewedding pampering or post-wedding relaxation.

WEDDING VENUES

SOUTHEND BARNS 01243 641 247 | www.southendbarns.co.uk Set on a working farm in the beautiful West Sussex countryside, this venue has been lovingly restored with rustic charm and romantic touches. There’s ample outdoor space available to you with a picturesque courtyard that lies at the heart of the venue, the perfect spot for reception drinks and garden games.

THE CELEBRATIONS

THE “I DOS”

The Threshing Barn can seat 120 diners and can accommodate 200 for the evening bash. This 200-year-old barn radiates rustic charm with authentic wooden beams and wrought iron chandeliers. There’s plenty of space for dancing and entertainment and the vast windows that span both sides of the building allow you to make the most of the surrounding gardens and stunning sunsets.

The Dairy Barn offers a sweeping 22-metre aisle, exposed wooden beams and benches made of sweet chestnut. Holding up to 120 guests, it can also be used post-ceremony for a drinks reception or an entertainment area for the children. The Secret Garden is a hidden gem that features a 50-foot aisle set amidst peaceful scenery and seats up to 100. Taking inspiration from the Dutch term gezellig, it’s a celebration of togetherness, comfort and enjoyment.

The Milking Parlour can be used as bride-tribe HQ or for groom preparations and you’re welcome to stay the night should you wish. So, that’s the start of the day taken care of, now for the end. As evening falls, the gardens are lit with romantic uplighters and you can chill with your nearest and dearest around the Collecting Yard with its sumptuous sofas, firepit and alfresco bar.

REAL WEDDING

H

aving both ended previous relationships Becci and Ed moved back in with their respective parents, who happened to live opposite each other. Becci’s dad would often enjoy neighbourly chats with Ed in the front garden. One day, Becci’s sister thought it would be hilarious to tell Ed that Becci fancied him, despite nothing of the sort ever being discussed. Mortified when she found out, she announced to Ed, having bumped into him on a night out, that it had all been a prank. Nevertheless, a few days later he asked her out for a drink and the rest is history. “Seven years, one wedding, three kids later and here we are,” Becci says. Ed’s proposal had been a long time coming as he’d bought the ring and kept it hidden for six months before he actually popped the question. In the end, it was when the couple were picking up a new car that Ed managed to sneak the engagement ring into its glove box. As they took it for a spin, he asked Becci to open up the compartment to see what was inside. Coming as a massive surprise to her it took a few moments to sink in, giving Ed time to park up and jump round to the passenger side where he got down on one knee. When planning began the vision was of a grand stately home affair, but not long into the process the couple realised that they’d started to lose touch with the true purpose of a wedding – “It wasn’t feeling personal anymore,” Becci explains. So, they abandoned the idea in favour of tying the knot at the church where their children had been christened. “By this time our theme ideas had evolved too and we wanted more of a relaxed country vibe, so we went for St. Mary’s Hall in Udimore as our reception venue with it’s barn-like feel,” the bride tells us. We couldn’t wait to find out more, so we caught up with Becci for the lowdown on the big day and discovered that it wasn’t all plain sailing...

LOVE IN THE MIDST OF CHAOS Becci and Ed were gearing up to marry on 10th October 2020, when Boris announced that from 28th September weddings would be restricted to 15 guests again, so the pair made a huge decision. Becci remembers, “I was gutted. This was the third wedding date we’d scheduled and there was no way we could reduce our numbers further. It would have meant we couldn’t even have had immediate family there. I couldn’t believe this was happening again – we’d already changed the date three or four times. But five minutes later, I put on my big girl pants and told Ed we were getting married that Saturday. He thought I was joking. I wasn’t.” Then and there she started calling all of their suppliers and succeeded in getting all bar two on board. Becci continues, “That week was manic. The second I dropped the bigger kids at school, the baby became my wedding assistant for dress fittings, nail appointments and wedding rehearsals.”

THE SCENE IS FINALLY SET Becci and Ed’s bohemian country theme was reflected in the venue styling for the day. Laid out in a horseshoe shape, the long banquet tables were adorned in terrariums of various sizes, copper geometric candle holders, foliage and blooms in glorious autumnal hues. The seasonal flowers were all grown in the florist’s own allotment and Becci opted for loose-style bouquets for herself and bridesmaids, which worked beautifully with the boho vibe. The men’s buttonholes were made up of herbs, with a flower to match the palette and the flowergirls carried a wand each with a silk flower. The table plan was designed on acrylic with a backing that incorporated the wedding’s natural seasonal colour palette. The place names were made to complement this and the vinyl table numbers were stuck onto the glass of geometric copper photo frames, allowing them to be free-standing. The catering was all a bit last minute amidst the whirlwind of replanning. So, the relaxed barbecue buffet became a roast beef dinner finished with a beautiful chocolate brownie pudding. Further treats were on offer in the form of the big-day bake decorated with copper and a marble effect, plus a sweetie cart.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED Becci faced even more challenges when dress shopping as shortly after choosing

REAL WEDDING a beautiful Dando London gown for the original wedding date in May 2020, she discovered she was expecting their third child. This meant she’d be six months pregnant at the time of walking down the aisle. So, shopping take two: she selects a second dress, perfect for her and growing baby. But, that wasn’t the end, as the pandemic struck and the wedding moved. Frustratingly, Becci was told there was no way the dress could be altered to fit her new post-baby figure, so dress number three was on the agenda. Happily though, when the shops reopened in October, the bride fell in love with Enchanting by Mon Chera. “It was light, easy to move in and so elegant. It made me feel beautiful and I knew I had to have it.” Ed wore black trousers, a white shirt, black tie and dark grey jacket. He completed the ensemble with a sage green waistcoat, which complemented the bridesmaids’ dresses. The groomsmen were dressed in the same black trousers, shirts and jackets, but with sage green braces instead of the waistcoat. The bridesmaids looked gorgeous in sage green multi-way dresses. Becci explains, “I wanted them to feel comfortable whatever their body shape and let them choose how they wanted to wear them.”

“Cancelling our big day gave us a chance to reflect on what was really important and that the show a wedding can turn into isn’t necessary.” TREASURED MEMORIES The bride shares, “On the day we felt happy, loved-up, complete – just so relieved that it’d finally happened and nothing had gone wrong. Saying our vows in front of our friends and family was a highlight, as was christening our new baby during the ceremony. It was wonderful to see everyone come together and let their hair down after such a weird year. Life felt almost normal that day. “Every single supplier involved in our big day was amazing. They essentially pulled it all off with only 72 hours notice. Everyone was so nice, helpful and lovely. We’re also grateful to our friends and family who came at short notice, and to those who weren’t able to attend but were still incredibly understanding sending gifts and well wishes. We’re very lucky to be surrounded by such fabulous people.”

REAL WEDDINGS

Cara and Ollie’s joyous big day provided the perfect opportunity for loved ones to let their hair down and enjoy each other’s company post-lockdown Images courtesy of Steve & Tania Photography

C

ara met Ollie in 2014 while they both worked at the same company. They hadn’t previously encountered each other though until their worlds collided at an event Cara had organised where Ollie had an exhibition stand. “After that we found ourselves bumping into each other at pretty much every event I organised,” she explains. The pair soon became fast friends, meeting up on their lunch breaks or seeking each other out at a colleague’s leaving drinks, and eventually became a couple in 2016. Cara tells us, “I expect we were always going to end up together; but we were the only people at the time who couldn’t see it!” Ollie proposed in London while getting ready to see a show. “I was running seriously late and hadn’t yet finished my make-up, so I wasn’t best pleased when I was interrupted... Until I knew why of course,” Cara laughs. He’d always told her that he’d pop the question when least expected, so he was indeed true to his word. Given her career as an event organiser, venue hunting was second nature to Cara. Keen to ensure their reception space was completely different to the locations they’d used professionally, they both fell in love with Fitzleroi Barn. Cara explains, “The staff spent a lot of time showing us around without piling on any pressure, and it felt extremely personal with the owners having been married there themselves before hiring it out to other couples.” We were excited to learn more and caught up with the bride herself for the lowdown on the big day, 21st July, 2021...

RUSTIC ROMANCE Cara and Ollie settled on a relaxed vibe for their big day, which was themed to fit in beautifully with their barn surroundings and styled in a palette of white, cream, sage green and pink hues. The centrepieces then fell into place naturally. “We liked the rustic and ever-popular log slices, so I bought those very early on in the planning process and waited until further inspiration struck,” Cara shares. Then the tin milk churns presented themselves and everything came together once filled with flowers and placed atop the log slices. Crucially the blooms were carefully selected so as not to hamper guests’ conversations with their size, as well by virtue of their seasonality and having been grown in the UK. The overall effect was completed with glass jars holding candles and wooden table numbers. Place names slotted into wine corks were also added to the tables: “We do a lot of wine-tasting experiences together, so this seemed like a nice personal touch,” Cara says. The table plan was one of the final elements the pair decided on. They painted a large frame in white and hung up cards displaying each table’s guests using little wooden clips. Then for the finishing touch, their florist wound some foliage around it to complement the rest of the styling, before placing it on an easel. When it came to the big-day bake, Cara and Ollie opted for a semi-naked cake decorated with fresh flowers. The bride says, “Too many times we’ve been to weddings where the cake wasn’t eaten, so we were keen that it should be served as one of the desserts.” This went down a treat. Each tier was different involving Cara’s favourite – carrot cake, Ollie’s favourite – lemon, and Victoria sponge, sure to be popular with everyone. The first time they saw Fitzleroi Barn it was resplendently decked-out in white bunting and fairylights. It was a look the duo fell in love with, so they hired the same talented team responsible: venue stylists Bells and Bunting.

34

REAL WEDDINGS GETTING TO THE CHURCH ON TIME “Because we had such a large wedding party and were going between two venues, we knew we’d need transport to carry a lot of people,” Cara tells us. Liking the idea of a double decker bus, but doubting its practicality given the venue’s country-lane location, they found Southcoast Motor Services, who offered a super-stylish vintage single decker – perfect. An oh-so cute VW Campervan called Candy took the bride and her dad to the church. Cara remembers, “She was the perfect vehicle, as the hoop underneath my dress would have been difficult to fit into anything smaller. Plus, she was such a fun and happy van, which really added to the atmosphere of our day.”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT The couple knew early on that they would be looking for something other than the traditional three-course fare. They met Caroline from Gourmet Chef at a wedding fair and really appreciated how carefully she listened to their vision, enabling her to show them a few options they hadn’t considered. They settled on an informal barbecue along with a selection of desserts, which suited the overall vibe of the day well. Later on a pizza van arrived to serve the evening meal – “This was ideal after a few too many lemonades!” Cara confides.

STYLE FOR THE AISLE The bride looked stunning in a Mark Lesley gown (7359), but it wasn’t a silhouette she’d pictured herself in. As she wasn’t sure what she was looking for on arriving for her appointment at Eva Rose Bridal, the consultants advised that she try on a variety to get a better understanding. Despite not being enamoured with her eventual choice when she saw it on the hanger, it was love at first sight once she’d glimpsed herself wearing it. Ollie wore a navy suit with a thin chalk stripe through it. The groomsmen were invited to choose their own suits, and all ended up selecting navy too, albeit in a variety of styles. Likewise, the bridesmaids were able to make their own floorlength, sage green or pink dress selections.

THROWING SOME SHAPES During the drinks reception guests had great fun with the games laid out in the courtyard – giant Jenga, giant Connect 4 and Pass the Pigs. When the time came to hit the dancefloor later in the day a 10-piece funk/soul band provided the tunes. Cara recalls, “They went down really well as the music they played appealed to a wide range of people. They were wonderfully energetic and the floor was never empty.” There’s talent in this family as Ollie’s uncle is a singer in his spare time, although neither bride nor groom had seen him perform. Unbeknownst to them, he’d arranged with the band to let him sing for them and when he took the mic all assembled were delighted by his rendition of Johnny B Goode.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS The bride says, “For me, one of the highlights was getting ready at my parents’ house in the morning. Having so many bridesmaids and friends, plus a huge family meant things were nicely chaotic. For Ollie, what stood out was seeing all of our loved ones together in one place, having such a nice time together after so long. Of course, we also loved the moment we stood at the altar together. I think it made the whole thing real. “Everyone involved in our wedding made it special, but ultimately we were so lucky with the timing. For many, it was the first sense of normality after the pandemic.” 35

ade and Dan met a decade ago when volunteering for Brighton RNLI. They started out as friends, but before long love started to blossom. “We first knew there was something there when collecting money for the charity on a fundraising day,” Jade remembers. So, as their friends often say, it was an orange boat that brought them together. After stopping for a hot chocolate while on their regular family walk with their little boy Noah, Dan asked for a family selfie. As Jade was about to snap the pic, he popped the engagement ring into the back of the shot and when she noticed it, he asked her to marry him. 38

It had been a long-running joke between the pair that Dan would play golf on the morning of their wedding at Cottesmore Hotel Golf & Country Club, since that was his favourite course. So, it was the first place to spring to mind when they started looking at venues and Jade fell in love with the ceremony lawn straight away. Sadly though, since it had fallen victim to fire in 2018, the rest of the hotel was a building site, but from seeing artist’s impressions of its new look, they knew Cottesmore would be perfect. Join us, as we learn more from the bride about the big day, which took place on 29th May 2021...

T

he Grand Hotel in Eastbourne is a timeless venue. It can act as the perfect backdrop to any number of wedding themes. So, to showcase its versatility hair stylist and make-up artist Claire Reed from Beauty Ninjas, along with her team of local suppliers, embarked on this fabulous project. She tells us, “All in one day we shot classic, boho and red carpet-themed bridal looks.” Read on and enjoy this brilliant burst of wedspiration as Claire takes us through each one.

RED CARPET “The classic glamour and opulence of this, the south coast’s only five-star resort, demands a redcarpet look. This called for Hollywood waves, smouldering smoky eyes, a red lip, a vintageinspired hair accessory and a chic satin gown.”

43

BOHO “With its prime seafront location the venue lends itself well to a beachy boho vibe. We opted for a boho braid and neutral make-up. The gown boasts hints of vintage lace and the metallic headpiece is a real showstopper.”

44

LOCAL SHOOT CLASSIC “To reflect the venue’s timeless beauty we created a classic look with a natural, radiant make-up, glamorous hair and sensational gown. The goal was to capture photographs that any bride would be delighted to look back on for a lifetime.”

ilgate Park, on the edge of Crawley, received its wedding licence in the summer of 2020 when the rest of the world was in various stages of lockdown. A vibrant hub of activity for its community, the Park is loved by all, young and old. It’s a place where lasting memories are made, so launching its own wedding offering seemed like a natural step towards the future. What graces these pages is the result of this new venue’s very first wedding shoot, designed to showcase the myriad joys the park has to offer couples on their big day. There’s the Walled Garden ceremony area, beautiful lakes, and activities at Go Ape for the wild at heart – even the resident zoo animals can play their part. So, one thing’s for certain: a wedding day here will be one to remember.

W

hen Cottesmore Hotel Golf and Country Club succumbed to fire in 2018, the heartbreak was felt far and wide. Now, in happier times, the venue has flung open its doors to weddings once more with its fab new look and versatile function suites. Constructed to complement the historical charm and character of the original 1884 farm buildings, the new sections boast a contemporary flair allowing couples and their guests to enjoy a seamless blend of old and new. The team behind this styled shoot, captured during the spring earlier this year, drew inspiration from the surrounding 247 acres of lush, treelined countryside and the results showcase the venue back to doing it what does best. If you cast your mind back to the dark days of 2020’s first lockdown, you may remember that the Sussex wedding industry rallied together to offer our brave NHS workers a chance to win the wedding of their dreams at this venue. Laura and Mike were the lucky winners of this incredible prize worth more than £30,000 and will soon be tying the knot with help from the talented and generous local suppliers who have donated their services to the cause. We hear they can’t wait to give the deserving couple the day of their dreams. 55

S

ince 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, wedding planner Lisa Evans from Taylored Weddings felt inspired to create a romantic, intimate wedding shoot set against a poppy-field backdrop. The concept was to capture the love between two people separated by times of war, filled with the unspoken awareness of time lost, never to be reclaimed. “I wanted to show that love conquers all, love waits, love is there for you when you need it and even when you think you don’t. Life can take us in different directions, but as long as we have love, we can be strong enough to endure any hardship,” she explains. Lisa and the assembled team of wedding experts were keen for the project to be as authentic as possible. The beautiful blooms for example are all varieties native to Britain. After all, flowers weren’t something people could afford to import during the first and second World Wars, they simply had to make use of what was around them. The hair and make-up too had a super-stylish vintage vibe; as did the picnic wedding breakfast, duplicating the miss match of snacks that would have been available while rationing was in place. With their heartfelt sentiment, these images caused us here at Your Sussex Wedding to reflect on weddings over the past 18 months and ponder our learnings, which in some ways mirror those of wartime nearlyweds. As Lisa says, “The most important thing was the marriage of two people in love.”

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC

Autumnal wedmin advice from those in the know

CELEBRATE THE SEASON

We want to make our ceremony and big-day as a whole a celebration of autumn. Do you have any ideas on what we could do and include to carry this off? When I think of autumn weddings, I think crisp, clear days with dark sparkling nights, pine cones, vibrant leaves, rustic logs and tree stumps. Outdoor ceremonies almost feel like a must! Themed weddings spring to mind including apple bobbing, Halloween, Harry Potter or pumpkins and chestnuts with palette accents of orange, copper or gold if you want to go all out. Autumn is a romantic and atmospheric time of year to get married, as the warm colour schemes add a natural earthy feel to proceedings. Choose seasonal wedding flowers such as foxgloves, antique roses,

dried ferns and eucalyptus. These all look amazing with muted peach and brown tones, perhaps even consider an artificial bouquet in rich hues reflecting the season. If you love the idea of a confetti throw, use fresh crisp leaves crushed into clear jars that can hold candles afterwards to light your venue’s outdoor spaces when the sun goes down. The autumn months allow you to be adventurous with your food options and be sure to use quality local produce. What could be more inviting on a crisp afternoon than a bowl of fresh homemade soup to start your wedding breakfast? Finish with hot chocolate, cream and marshmallows to take outside as you gaze at the stars. Magic and sparkles: I just love autumn weddings! Merie Brown| www.orangeroseceremonies.com

WARMING BAKES

We’re having an autumn wedding and would love to incorporate the time of year into our cake. Do you have any flavour suggestions or decorations we could choose? There’s definitely a wonderful opportunity here to include colours and flavours that really accent the season. For example, try replacing a raspberry or strawberry conserve filling for blackberry or plum. Also, orange or hazelnut praline flavours can be added to classic choices such as chocolate and vanilla to give them a real boost. Delicious caramel notes are very versatile and have proven popular in recent years, as have gingerbread and spiced carrot cake. These options offer a rich, spicy taste designed to warm the soul. When it comes to embellishment, decorate your cakes with bold, muted colours of burnt orange, mustard, cream, burgundy and dark green; or focus on grey blues, sage, peach and dusky pink if you prefer a more subtle palette. If you like a classic look, why not swap out the traditional white for an ivory or champagne hue, which will better complement the colours of the season? The use of dried foliage and grasses such as pampas, bunny tails and ruscus is on trend, and adds a distinctive texture with a rustic feel. Lastly, we love rose gold and copper accents, which bring a gorgeous metallic element as the final flourish. Carrie Raymond | www.carriespartycakes.co.uk 63 

ESPECIALLY FOR YOU

I’ve been obsessed with the idea of having my own customised veil ever since falling in love with Meghan Markle’s. How can I go about this and what bespoke design options are available to me? It’s always so exciting to work collaboratively with brides, creating a truly personal accessory. An embroidered veil isn’t just something for the wedding day, but a beautiful heirloom and keepsake to treasure long afterwards. First and foremost book a design consultation to talk through your veil ideas. Here at Tabitha Textiles, we can embroider onto a pre-bought veil or if you’re going fully bespoke, you can choose from a range of luxury tulles, styles and lengths. This allows me to tailor the measurements to fit perfectly with your dress and overall look. Tulle and embroidery samples, along with unlimited design mocks ups, are sent to you once your bespoke veil is booked in the diary. I often get asked: “So what can I have embroidered on my veil?” The answer is pretty much anything, within reason. Most brides will request their initials with those of their spouse-to-be along with their wedding date, however if this is an autumn wedding you might have flowers in your bouquet to represent the season, or generally like the idea of woodland flora and fauna. You might even have a favourite song lyric or poem that holds special meaning for you. It’s possible to design something truly unique to capture your story as a couple. Tabitha Buckley | www.instagram.com/tabithatextiles

I’ve always longed to have peonies in my bridal bouquet, but we’re getting married in the autumn and I understand they won’t be available then. What would you suggest as alternatives that will have a similar look and impact? Peonies are such a beautiful flower, but they have a very short growing time and are only available in the early summer months. Luckily, there are a number of alternatives for an autumnal wedding. I’d go for some gorgeous garden roses, which are available all year round and have the same ruffled, fluffy and full look that gives the peony its scrumptious volume. Some varieties are also scented as an added bonus! If you’re looking for something with the wow factor when it comes to size, dahlias are the perfect alternative thanks to the impact of that majestic bloom. Best of all, they’ll be in season at the time of your wedding. They do tend to come in stronger colours though, so if bright and bold isn’t for you, another sizeable flower to consider could be a hydrangea. They have the same lovely roundness and fluffiness and come in pastel hues. Remember to check with your florist, as we always have something up our sleeves to create the look you’re after. BLOOMING GORGEOUS

TRICK OF THE LIGHT

Our November wedding is going to be held in the late afternoon so it’ll be getting dark by the time our ceremony ends. How will this affect our photography? There are a few different options for this depending on how traditional you’d like to be and what style of photography you’d like. If you prefer to use entirely natural or available light, but aren’t too worried about seeing each other before the ceremony, then you could always arrange a first look shoot. It will allow you to utilise the light earlier in the day and can give you a chance to steal a few private moments together rather than seeing each other for the first time in front of all of your guests. There are some romantic and intimate examples of first looks online, which will give you an idea — they’re very common at American weddings. If your photographer is happy using additional lighting, off-camera flash etc, then there are some amazing options you can go for in the winter light and darkness. Sparklers are also a fun choice for after-dark portraits. Make sure you look at your preferred photographer’s portfolio before booking and ask to see examples of winter or poorly lit weddings. Don’t worry too much though, some of the best sunsets I’ve ever seen have been at autumn and winter weddings, so just be flexible and let your photographer lead you. Wedding photography at this time of year can be wonderfully dramatic. Stephanie Kalber | www.stephaniekalber.com

FASHION ADVICE

How to dress for your big day whatever your beautiful shape

K

nowing your body shape is a great place to start when thinking about your wedding dress. Your everyday wardrobe might already be screaming clues at you as it’ll be full of styles and shapes that you naturally gravitate towards. Have a look at other dresses you’ve worn to formal occasions or even to the office and see if they follow a general shape. If they do, this is a great guide to what silhouette of wedding dress to try on first. But the golden rules really are to keep an open mind and trust your bridal consultant. We caught up with some of the county’s bridal boutique owners to find out more.

Pear

You’re likely to be boasting a pear or triangle body shape if you’d consider your hips and bottom to be wider than your shoulders and bust.

Jools suggests Etienne from her Signature Bridal Collection

Jools from Valentia Bridal says, “Pear bodies tend to have a defined waist, so ballgowns are the perfect choice as this style will enhance the feature as well as giving you balance.”

Debbie suggests Laura from the Bliss Range by Tiffany Bridal Your Sussex Wedding editor Kelly says, “V and U-shaped necklines are great for the pear-shaped bride as they bring the angles away from the hips. Styles with sleeves also work wonders to broaden the shoulders and bring balance.” Kelly suggests Sara by Sassi Holford

Debbie from Rosedene Bridal says, “As your hips are the area you might not want to draw attention to, stay clear of mermaid silhouettes. Dresses that have a defined waist and an A-line skirt will flatter everything above your waist and hide everything below! Also, styles with asymmetric folds across the body will draw the eye away from the stomach.” 69

If you’d describe your body as “curvy” and your bust and hip measurements are roughly equal, you most likely have an hourglass figure.

Debbie says, “If you have an hourglass figure with your bust and hips a similar size, bravo! You’re one of the lucky ones. You can wear any style including a tightly fitted mermaid or fishtail both of which will show off your gorgeous curves.”

Jools suggests Isabella from her Signature Bridal Collection

Debbie suggests PB0057 by Pure Bridal

Apple

Your body shape is likely to be described as apple if your shoulders, bust, waist and hips are fairly similar in measurement, with slightly narrower shoulders and hips.

www.zakwillis.co.uk

Debbie says, “It’s a great idea to look at empireline silhouettes or ballgowns as they’ll flatter your shape beautifully, giving the impression of a smaller waist. Also, corset or lace-up backs are a godsend for mature brides or those with a fuller waist, giving you a fabulous figure.”

Jools says, “We love fit and flare or mermaid gowns for this figure, but they’re so versatile and suit so many shapes. One tip though, if you’re petite or plus size, make sure the skirt gently goes out from the hips rather than opting for a fanned fishtail, which could create the impression of a shorter and wider silhouette. The elegance of a sheath gown too is ideal for an hourglass figure.”

www.zakwillis.co.uk

Hourglass

Jools says, “You can’t go wrong with a princesscut gown. This style has a shaped waistline that will offer you a streamlined silhouette, balancing your curves perfectly in all the right places. It’s also a great cut for petite brides as it’ll elongate your body.” Debbie suggests Faire by Pure Bridal 70

Jools suggests Eleanor from her Signature Bridal Collection

You’re most likely sporting a rectangle figure if you have straight hips and a straight body line. Don’t be deceived, you can still have a rectangle shape whether you’re size 8 or size 28.

FASHION ADVICE www.zakwillis.co.uk

Rectangle

Jools says: “The elegance of a sheath gown, whether you opt for a sleek and sexy design or a more romantic lace, is simply perfect for this body shape.”

Kelly says, “Think about adding some angles with a pretty belt or sash, a V-neck, or a bolero. Alternatively, if you’re looking for something completely different why not try a bridal two piece or suit, great for an ultra-stylish city wedding.”

Jools suggests Aracelli from her Signature Bridal Collection

Kelly suggests Tatum by Justin Alexander

www.zakwillis.co.uk

Inverted triangle

If you deem your shoulders to be the widest part of your body and you find your measurements narrow as you move down to your hips and waist, you can call your body shape an inverted triangle.

Kelly says, “A stunning dress with plenty of lace or detail will draw the eye away from any one area in particular. Opt for sleeves or wide straps to play down the shoulder area or give a daring sheath a try for a super-sleek look.” Jools suggests Davinci from her Signature Bridal Collection

Jools says, “The timeless A-line gown, whether it be the on-trend floaty boho style or the more traditional look with a full skirt, is the go-to dress for all body shapes. It helps to balance out an inverted triangle figure for example, by offering the illusion of the perfect hourglass figure.”

Kelly suggests Metropolis by Eliza Jane Howell

Love is in the air

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

I

can’t quite believe that my wedding is only 10 months away! The time is going by so fast, and it still feels like we have so much left to plan! As some of you may know, within the first few months of being engaged we’d booked our venue, photographer and caterer and were on the lookout for the rest of our suppliers. With the pandemic pushing most weddings back in to 2022, we found that a lot of companies we were interested in booking weren’t available. Not to be defeated, we carried on searching knowing it was best to get everything sorted as early as possible. My fiancé, Dave, and I are enjoying the process, but it can feel slightly overwhelming at times. With such a big family and many coming from abroad, we’ve found it difficult trying to keep everyone happy while also maintaining our original budget, but we’re still super excited to see what the day will look like.

FLORAL WONDERS I love flowers and fully believe they can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to me. I wanted something to tie in with our blush and sage green colour scheme but also complement our barn venue. Despite working in the wedding industry for more than five years, I’m ashamed to admit my knowledge of flowers isn’t great, so I needed a supplier who would

72

be able to make suggestions and help us bring our vision to life. Whilst looking through social media, I happened to come across a stunning, oversized bouquet that was exactly what I wanted. I looked up the company and found they were based just five minutes from our wedding venue – I thought it was fate! The florist had a range of pre-made packages that suited our needs perfectly. We checked the company’s reviews online, confirmed availability for our day and discussed our needs. The team were fantastic and even suggested ways of helping us save money, which we really appreciated. We booked bouquets, buttonholes, pew ends, centrepieces and an arrangement for the top table, which we’re excited to see. As we were in lockdown at the time, we were unable to meet our florist in person, so when restrictions lifted slightly we travelled to meet them at a wedding fair. Being able to discuss our vision in person made us feel confident about our decision, and I’d definitely recommend meeting face-to-face if possible.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS After being engaged for a few months, I decided to give in to my mum’s nagging and go dress shopping. I’m short, curvy and very selfconscious, so I was dreading trying on gowns! We visited our local boutique, and since I had no idea of what style I wanted, I must admit I felt quite overwhelmed. I started with a fishtail, which I liked the look of, but it just didn’t feel like me; I also felt like I couldn’t sit down without bursting out of it! I quickly moved onto an A-line silhouette. The second gown I tried on was one I’d seen online and loved. It had three-quarterlength sleeves, a detailed bodice, a plunging neckline and lots of lace. On paper, this sounds like everything I didn’t want in a dress, but strangely enough, it turned out to be the one. I tried on a few different options afterwards (mainly for fun), but I found fault in all of them

and always came back to my dress. It needs some alterations as it’s slightly too big, but I purchased it there and then. I would share a picture with you all, but Dave reads this and is (annoyingly) traditional so is against seeing the dress before the big day! One thing I didn’t anticipate was how I would feel after purchasing it. I always thought I’d feel over the moon, but instead, I felt quite panicked. Not because I didn’t love the dress, but after years of writing about weddings, I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-withemotion moment when wearing the one for the first time, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. I’ve since come to realise that everyone is different, and I absolutely adore my dress whether I cried or not. I’ve spoken to a few of my married friends, and some had similar experiences, which was reassuring to hear! My advice to any bride-to-be is to go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, do what makes you happy! Make sure you check in next issue to hear all about our engagement shoot and my search for a hair and make-up artist.

Melissa. x

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.

BRIDE’S DIARY

We haven’t decided on a table plan yet, but we like the idea of names hanging from string surrounded by gorgeous flowers.

I love confetti pictures, and it’s something I really want our photographer to capture on the big day. We’re currently looking into eco-friendly options and trying to decide which colour to use.

Our photographer has suggested taking pictures of my dress in different parts of the venue, and I’m excited to see what he comes up with.

Seeing as this July it rained, a lot, we’ve purchased some white umbrellas just in case the weather turns bad for our July wedding next year.

How stunning is this flower arch?! I’d love to incorporate something like this into our day.

Our colour scheme is blush and sage green, so we’re going to incorporate both hues into our table decorations.

The chalkboard signage trend is here to stay! I, for one, adore it and am thinking of using one as our welcome sign.

To decorate our wedding chairs, we’re thinking of acquiring wooden bride and groom signs.

To keep the rings safe, we’re planning to buy an engraved box that we can keep for years to come. 73

Emolyne Ramlov, founder of the eponymous make-up brand, talks inclusivity and bringing a colour boost to your bridal beauty

Tim McBaj

It’s our first anniversary soon and there’s been so much to learn over that time. Covid made things difficult as we actually went into lockdown around two weeks before launch. But we’d worked so hard for two-and-a-half years and I didn’t want to delay. It was a risk, but luckily it went crazy. Black Lives Matter came along and as an inclusive brand headed up by a black woman there was a lot of interest in what we had to offer. Everything happens for a reason.

B

orn in Uganda and raised in Denmark Emolyne Ramlov discovered a passion for make-up upon entering her teenage years. Until the age of 13 when she moved to Europe she hadn’t been permitted to wear make-up, which in Africa was seen as a distraction from studying and an unwelcome beginning to a flirtation with the opposite sex. So, it was a complete culture shock for her as she sat alongside her new classmates to find them in full beat and looking glam. “I went home and said to my mum: ‘We need to talk!’ She took me shopping and I filled my basket with as much make-up as I could. I needed to catch up and I haven’t stopped since,” she tells us. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty editor, Kelly Andrews, met up with Emolyne to discover more about her journey from passionate teenager to creating her very own make-up brand. What was the inspiration behind Emolyne? As my love for make-up grew I visited plenty of big stores looking for products to suit my skin tone, but couldn’t find the right ones. They had two to three reds perhaps, but none that I 90

liked or were complementary. As I grew older I realised that this was a problem across a lot of different product ranges. There was no single brand offering a matching lipstick, liner and nail polish, so I thought: “Well, I’m just going to do this then!” I use a lot of reds and nudes myself, so it made sense to start there, making sure that no matter the skin tone someone would be able to get at least one of each. I created 15 reds and 15 nude shades and even then I wasn’t sure if I should stop! The range has five colours for light, five for medium and five for dark skin tones. It allows people to pick a different colour for different seasons, as our skin tone changes throughout the year. I also created a kit to save my customers time, meaning once they discover their perfect shade they can easily find the matching products. When it came to naming this huge range of shades I wanted to be able to tell a story while keeping the brand personal, so I immediately thought of Africa. It was a way of honouring my place of birth and bringing the whole story together. Plus, I knew I could never run out of names if I looked there for inspiration!

Tell us more about the ideas, ethics and beliefs the company is founded on. I wanted this brand to be for everyone, no matter their gender or race – if you’re into make-up this is the place for you. The selection is big enough that everyone can feel included, which was the key. How do we achieve that perfect marriage between skin tone and make-up shades? The easiest way for us was to put models on our website covering as many different skin tones as

BEAUTY INTERVIEW

we could. That way customers can see whose is the closest to their own and how each shade looks on her. Tell us about your own beauty regime. I keep it simple. I wash my face every morning and evening, as well as steaming to open the pores, which allows serums to absorb more effectively. I use serum everywhere – hands, face, neck. These are the areas that start to show signs of age once you reach 40, so it’s important to look after them. A dermatologist once told me to use serum on my dry hands, and up to then I’d always thought it was just for the face, but I’ve never looked back. Ole Henriksen’s Truth Serum is my favourite, and not just because he’s a fellow Dane! What are your make-up bag must-haves? Uganda, Casablanca and Abuja are my favourite Emolyne shades. But it’s like being asked about my favourite child – they’re all my babies! I mainly wear a nude during the day for meetings, and in the evening I prefer reds. I’m particularly into red oranges at the moment. I always carry a nail polish with me too – Cameroon is versatile and works for all skin tones. And tissues... a mum can’t work without a tissue! What’s your top wedding-day make-up look? I’d go for something light depending on hair colour and skin tone. Keep it simple, elegant

and clean to keep focus on the eyes. You want your new spouse to see you sparkle. For light skin tones I’d recommend Luxor, Eritrea or Ciaro. For medium tones Tanzania, Kampala or Uganda work beautifully. And for darker tones Nairobi, Asmara or Marrakech are all perfect. Begin by using your favourite moisturiser, I’m a fan of a thick formulation in the winter. That serves as a base for the foundation and concealer. Then, keep building the look until you’re happy. Don’t start too strong as it’s hard to take anything back once you’ve gone too far.

“Enjoy and play with colour. Rule your shade and don’t be afraid to try something you haven’t tried before, they’re there to be explored.” What advice would you offer a bride who might not be used to wearing make-up but who wants to step it up for the wedding? I’d tone it down, don’t use too much. A little colour makes the lips pop, and match that to the eyeshadow for an on trend monochromatic look. What’s the one make-up secret you wish everyone knew? Moisturise properly before you do anything else. That’ll give you that all-important glow and

sets your make-up for long-lasting perfection. It was essential to me that our lipsticks last so you don’t have to keep topping it up throughout the day and that’s particularly important for a bride. What’s your proudest achievement so far? Definitely having the brand recognised for inclusivity. I love to see people go on the website and realise just how much choice there is, and hearing them say they just don’t know which to choose. The other thing for me was being able to make the products vegan and cruelty-free. I wanted to educate people to care about what they put on their skin, so this makes me really happy. Is there anything you’d still like to achieve? So much! Every day we listen to our consumers and what they want. So, the next phase for Emolyne Cosmetics is incorporating more skin tones for them, as well as including more models they can identify with. I also want to grow the product categories while staying within the 15 reds and 15 nudes concept. Look out for our pop ups too. Our original plans for these had to be cancelled due to Covid, but I still want somewhere for people to experience the range in real life, so they’ll be coming soon.

Q&A

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals

ALL THINGS BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL

I’ve chosen a bright and bold colour palette for the big day. How could my make-up complement this while still looking beautifully bridal? Claire says: My advice would be to go for a statement lip, keeping the complexion clean and eye make-up minimal. This way, your lips will really pop in photos, but the overall look won’t appear over done. For a harmonious look, it’s essential to choose a shade that suits your colouring as well as one that works well with your wedding palette. So, pick out just one of your colours and match your lipstick to it. Corals, reds and bold pinks would all work well and there’s usually a hue out there to suit most people. As a general rule, opt for a shade with a blue undertone if your colouring is cool. This is likely the case if you have ashy blonde, brown or black hair with cool grey, green or blue eyes and skin with pink or blue undertones. Alternatively, seek out a warmer hue with a yellow undertone if your colouring is warm. Here, your hair will be auburn, chestnut or honey blonde with warm green or brown eyes, and your skin has peach or olive undertones.

A FLASH IN THE PAN

I’ve noticed in photos that my complexion always looks so pale! I’m worried about this happening in our wedding shots. What’s the reason for this, and can my make-up artist correct this? Sarah says: Don’t worry, this can certainly be avoided. To make sure your make-up looks just as perfect in photos, you need to avoid products containing high quantities of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. This is what causes the flashback in photos. These two ingredients are minerals, commonly found in face powders and foundations, used to protect your skin from UV rays. It’s important to protect your skin so don’t skip the SPF entirely, instead look for a chemical sun protection and pair this with a foundation containing either low or no SPF. Your make-up artist will have a kit that’s suitable for photography, but always discuss any concerns you have at your trial appointment to put your mind at rest.

SUPPORT NETWORK

I have a very full bust, whereas my partner worries about her smaller bust. What styles will suit us and how can we get the right support? Debbie says: Such a dilemma... Many find their big boobs a nuisance, whereas some with a smaller bust may worry that they don’t feel sexy enough. So, for a larger bust try a V-neck dress or halter-neck as this style will both support and flatter. Your partner on the other hand, should find that off-the-shoulder silhouettes, as well as sweetheart necklines, look stunning on her. She could also ask for bridal push ups, which are shaped foam fillers sewn into the dress to fill up the bustline where it counts.
