NEW FOR 2022

GuestHouse is a family-owned hotel brand bringing happy hotels to historic buildings on Britain’s most desirable streets. Owners and visionaries behind the brand are the three Guest brothers (Tristan, James and Tom) on a mission to develop a new generation of upscale hotels that’ll offer GuestHouse guests an indulgent treat while retaining the warmth and character of the traditional guest house experience. After spotting No.1’s Regency Georgian good looks, the idea for No.1 by GuestHouse, York was born. Opening January 2022, inside this Grade II-listed townhouse, guests will be rewarded with huge, dreamy sash windows, higher-than-high ceilings, and a sweeping central staircase surrounded by dark walls and a candlelit entrance – an ode to York’s gothic past. The 39 bedrooms are as restful as it gets with original fireplaces, leafy views, a colour scheme designed to radiate warmth, and a hint of grandeur to them all. The main bar is filled with local beers and excellent wines, as well as GuestHouse signature cocktails created from local ingredients and inspired by some of the UK’s most famous destinations. The restaurant is where Wild British Food (that’s chef’s name for it) is served Yorkshire style. Down in the cellar, which was an air shelter in World War II, guests will find a cocooning world of bespoke spa therapies by talented experts using organic products. No.1 is brilliantly central; what’s left of the Roman city walls are a short walk away and York Minster just a 10-minute stroll. For further information, visit: www.guesthousehotels.co.uk

Fresh ideas for Hotel Rendezvous

The company now running Skipton’s largest hotel, Hotel Rendezvous, has appointed a new manager in a significant step towards achieving a four-star a rating. The 96-bedroom hotel is https://stephengarnettphotography.com undergoing major changes following the retirement of popular Skipton business couple Malcolm and Karen Weaving. It has been taken over by global management company First & Foremost, which has now appointed Kim Jackson as Resident Manager. Kim brings a wealth of experience having worked in hospitality and event management across the world, including spells in South Africa, France and London. Kim said, “I’ve worked around the world, and extensively in the UK and London. I chose to take up this role on the doorstep of the Yorkshire Dales because of how friendly the people are, how great Yorkshire food is and the scenery in this area.” Kim believes her experience will stand her in good stead for the role at the Rendezvous, which is currently undergoing an extensive programme of refurbishment of public areas and bedrooms. Her remit is also to improve the restaurant to appeal to the local dining clientele and offer themed dining events on the purpose-built narrowboat The Graceful Swan. She added, “I think the main thing I can bring to the Rendezvous are some fresh ideas for the quiet months, introducing concepts that have proven successful elsewhere in my career. We’re keen to attract locals to our restaurant, Skipton Bar and Grill, as well as becoming the place to go for celebrations such as birthdays, weddings and anniversaries. With First & Foremost at the helm, coupled with my experience, I think we can bring a new energy to the hotel, inspiring local people and partnering with other businesses as we develop the Rendezvous into a more luxurious leisure destination.” For further information, visit https://rendezvous-skipton.co.uk 10

THE OLD DEANERY NOW TAKING WEDDING BOOKINGS

The new owners of Ripon’s iconic The Old Deanery have announced they’re now taking bookings for weddings in 2022 and beyond, providing a lifeline for engaged couples following the pandemic. Recently acquired by Rebecca Hill and Chris Layton, The Old Deanery is a stunning Jacobean mansion opposite the breath-taking Ripon Cathedral. After a short period of closure, The Old Deanery will soon be reopening under its new management as a wedding and events venue with guests invited to celebrate in its stunning surroundings. Set within beautiful grounds, the venue features a romantic reception room, several public spaces and 10 charming bedrooms, which have been lovingly renovated since its purchase. Formerly operating as an award-winning hotel and wedding venue, The Old Deanery was forced to close its doors earlier this year after months of lockdown. Chris and Rebecca took over the property in August 2021, initially hoping to bring the hotel back to its former glory before re-opening primarily as a wedding and events venue by spring 2022. Running ahead of schedule, the hoteliers, who also own Galtres Lodge and Forest restaurant in York, have announced they’re now taking bookings from January 2022 onwards. Starting afresh and with vast availability, The Old Deanery is a perfect choice for couples that have had to cancel their weddings because of Covid-19 yet want to avoid long waiting lists with other venues to reschedule. Whether wanting to exchange vows at Ripon Cathedral or hold a civil ceremony on-site, The Old Deanery hopes to help create the perfect day to tie the knot. To make the day as stress-free as possible, the owners − alongside manager David Macdonald and renowned Yorkshire chef Stephanie Moon − have designed an exclusive wedding package that can be adapted to suit each couple. Including private use of the property, a red-carpet entrance and welcome drinks and nibbles upon arrival, the personalised wedding package is undoubtedly a lavish affair. Additional offerings include a three-course wedding breakfast followed by tea or coffee, half a bottle of wine per person and a private bar until midnight, amongst other special touches. Weddings at The Old Deanery will start from £100 per person based on a minimum of 60 guests. The venue offers a maximum capacity of 80 guests for the wedding breakfasts and 150 evening guests. Bedrooms and breakfast are available at an additional price. Discussing their plans for 2022, Rebecca Hill said, “Overall, we want The Old Deanery to be a jewel in Ripon’s crown and ‘the place’ to celebrate important life events, such as birthdays, Christenings and weddings.” “Focusing on the latter, we’re delighted to announce that we’re now accepting wedding bookings from January 2022 onwards. Given that we are opening as a new venue, we currently have fantastic availability, too, which we are sure will be music to many people’s ears. We can’t wait to welcome couples and to show them the changes we have made to ensure their wedding will be a special, unique, and unforgettable day.” Rebecca concluded. Fascinating focal points abound: a spectacular fireplace and chimneypiece decorated with heraldry in the Venetian Drawing Room, beautifully carved oak panelling and elegantly decorated upper walls and ceiling in the Card Room, exquisite paintings in the Picture Gallery,

LET’S CELEBRATE! Nuptials can take place in all three staterooms: Venetian Drawing Room, Card Room and Picture Gallery. Receptions can take place in any of the staterooms and sittings rooms. As the house is for exclusive use, guests have the run of the place. The maximum capacity for seated guests is 220. WE LOVE! The venue encompasses 250 acres of parkland together with 1,500 acres of farm and woodland and enjoys close connections with the farming community of the local village of Carlton. 19

Jack and Carmen Baxter’s beautiful wedding brought together friends and family for a love-filled day Images courtesy of Alfie Wright, Clique Visuals

J

ack and Carmen Baxter met in February 2015 on Valentine’s weekend. Carmen reveals, “We were both on nights out in the town where we lived at the time with our own friends. These friends knew each other and in passing each other at the pub thought it would be fun if we all continued the night out together, so we did! The next day we became friends on Facebook and started talking from there!” With the couple having similar interests including a love of travel, it was only right that Jack popped the question on a cruise in Central America. Carmen tells us, “The cruise was two weeks long, so we had the first week on our own before we were joined by Jack’s mum, dad, auntie and uncle on the second week. Jack’s parents brought the ring with them in their luggage so the whole thing was a surprise and well thought out. The proposal was on the black-tie evening! We all decided to

go and have some nice photos in our suits and dresses before dinner. Jack’s parents went first so it didn’t look suspicious, then we went for our photo, little did I know Jack’s dad wasn’t taking a photo, he was filming a video and whilst we were posing Jack got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was a big surprise and amazing that we now have the video of it. We celebrated the rest of the evening with lots of prosecco and the stewards also decorated our room with balloons and cute towel love hearts on the bed. Also, very un-romantically we also celebrated rather drunk at the midnight buffet with some fried chicken and a vindaloo curry – who said romance is dead!” Wedding planning commenced and the big day took place on 21st August, 2021 at The Parsonage Hotel and Spa. Here, Carmen shows us all the little details that made their special day… 25

We loved the venue the first time we looked around it. We’d previously been to look at a couple of barn venues, but even though they were beautiful, we knew we wanted more of a traditional wedd ing feel.

For centrepieces, we had a silver mirrored plate as a base, on each plate was a tall perspex vase containing a mixture of real and silk flowers to reflect our colour schemes. We also had votives on the tables filled with water and floating candles.

Our bouquets, buttonholes, flower girl’s flowers and the decorations for the welcome sign and table plan were created by Jack’s mum, Lesley and her friend, Emma who create wedding flowers. They worked together to design the most beautiful arrangements. So many guests commented on the fact they thought they were real!

We also had some flowers on our signing table in the ceremony room, along with a flower wall and some bloss om trees, these were from our amazing decorator and looke d stunning. r with pretty The Parsonage had a gorgeous silver mirro to use for the us ed allow decoration on the frame that they a shop on from r sticke vinyl table plan. All girls and mums had matching pyjamas, prosecco glasses and dressing gowns for the morning. All the men had matching socks.

There were pretty things ever ywhere; we had fair ylights, peta ls on the aisle runner, crystals scattered on the tables, a sweet cart, and a postbox for cards. In the evening, we also had boxes of flip flops for gue sts and blankets in case they went outs ide. We decided to hire a pho to booth too, which was so much fun! 26

Our cake was made by Lesley, Jack’s mum with help from Shirley, Jack’s grandma. It was five tiers, however, only the bottom tier was real cake! It was cleverly disguised so you’d never know, and every single flower and decoration was handmade. We chose fruit cake as it’s traditional.

We were lucky to have in-house catering at the venue and had a traditional three-course meal for the wedding breakfast. The Parsonage were great at catering for everyone’s dietary needs including a vegan menu too. In the evening, we had an American style buffet, which consisted of hotdogs, mac ‘n’ cheese and burgers.

attraction INSTANT

Charlie and Jessica tied the knot at Hollins Hall Hotel & Country Club with a rustic themed wedding Images courtesy of Drawn By Light Photography

J

essica and Charlie Hogg met through friends and fell in love instantly. Jessica tells us, “We’re extremely similar to one another, we’re each other’s best friends and soul mates.” Charles popped the question in December 2019 when he took her to admire the view from one of Ilkley’s famous rock formations, the cow and calf. Jessica remembers, “I turned around and he was down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was a huge surprise; my mum and dad knew and had a bottle of champagne waiting for when we went to tell them.” The big day was set for 16th July, 2021 taking place at Hollins Hall Hotel & Country Club.

SETTING THE SCENE Choosing the venue was the easiest decision. Jessica relays, “We always had Hollins Hall in mind as my mum and dad got married there 20 years ago. It’s a stunning place and brings back lots of memories, it was the perfect venue for us.” Settling on a rustic theme for the styling, they chose lace and hessian touches throughout. The chairs were tied with a hessian and lace bow, the centrepieces were wooden slabs with a fishbowl vase containing pine cones and fairylights. There were also pillar candles, with hessian and lace wrapped around the bottom. Adding to the woodland style, each table was named after a different tree. The cake table wasn’t to be missed as Jessica describes, “We had a three-tier, love-heart-shaped pork pie cake. The company decorated it with hessian, ribbon and pinecones to fit with our theme. It was also presented on a wooden log. My sister also baked cupcakes that were displayed on a three-tier homemade wooden cake stand which was crafted by my dad and Charlie.”

LOOKING THE PART Jessica’s figure-hugging, sweetheart necked Kenneth Winston gown looked picture perfect. Jessica tells us, “My dress was from Bridal Apparel in Rawdon. I liked the tighter fitting dress – and the corset back was stunning, with its long train with lace detail. The veil was made specially to match the lace detail on the train. I had a hair vine in my hair to accessorise, I didn’t feel the dress needed any more dressing up.” 30

REAL WEDDINGS

Charlie looked the part with his white tuxedo jacket. Whilst the groomsmen all wore black complete with waistcoat and pocket watch. Adding a pop of colour to the occasion, Jessica chose red peonies, white and red roses with eucalyptus and Italian ruscus. The buttonholes were all white roses with eucalyptus leaves. The bridesmaids wore long off the shoulder dresses in burgundy to complement the bouquets, however it was the diamond necklace that the bride gifted them to wear on the day that really completed the look.

TIME TO CELEBRATE The staff at Hollins Hall all went above and beyond to make sure the happy couple were looked after all day. Having family all together again was so special as the new Mrs Hogg remembers, “All the speeches on the day brought so much emotion to everyone. The speeches made myself and Charlie both feel extremely loved. I honestly couldn’t pick my favourite part of the day, the whole event was so amazing and surreal.” Due to Covid restrictions, Jessica and Charlie arranged a second evening do a few months later when they all had the perfect excuse to wear their outfits again and dance the night away! Jessica explains, “At first, we were a bit upset that we couldn’t have a dance with all our family on our big day but it actually worked out for the best. On our wedding day, we had our first dance outside and then sat out on the lawn in the sunshine. We were so lucky with the weather, it was glorious. It gave us the opportunity to talk to our guests and spend time with them. I wouldn’t

31

have changed anything about our wedding, everything was more perfect than we ever imagined.”

MAKING MEMORIES “Lisa, our photographer, was the best decision we made with the wedding planning. It was a very emotional day and it’s difficult taking it all in at the time, but having such amazing pictures to look back on is the best feeling in the world. Looking back through our pictures, where Lisa has captured so much emotion, it’s like reliving our day all over again. We’ll be able to look back on our pictures for years to come and bring back so many amazing memories. She made everyone feel so at ease and it shows in the images she’s captured.”

THE GETAWAY Following the main event, the couple took a week off to settle into married life where they enjoyed a spa evening at the Chevin Country Park Hotel and Spa, followed by a mini-break in York. Now the couple have plans to honeymoon abroad when the restrictions ease.

REAL WEDDINGS

TIMELESS

Chloe and Jack tied the knot with a classic, timeless white wedding Images courtesy of Charlotte Clemie Photography

J

ack proposed to Chloe on their fifth anniversary, at home with their dog, Beans. Chloe explains, “Believe it or not, Jack and I went to the same school from nursery (albeit one year apart), but we never actually met at school. We met on a date in our home town of Doncaster, after chatting on Facebook for a few weeks!” The wedding preparations commenced and Chloe Scott married Jack Radcliffe on 5th September, 2021 at Saltmarshe Hall. Here, Chloe tells us more about their day... 35

We really wanted a venue that offered simplicity in its décor but was really beautiful. Saltmarshe Hall fitted our brief perfectly. It’s great that they don’t have any packages to choose from; everything is personalised to you I wanted an understated opulence to our décor. We worked closely with Megan from Belle Bijoux Events who completely understood my vision and offered lots of ideas with regards to textures and candles.

We wanted a venue with gardens full of flowers so we could get married amidst them.

My dress was Martina Liana 1103 from Emily Bridalwear in Sheffield. I wanted a dress that radiated glamour and sexiness, but nothing over the top. My dress had the wow factor in all ways imaginable, but the train was what won me over in the shop – it was so big it didn’t fully fit in the room without having to move the chairs! We chose frosted acrylic signage with hints of silver from Rose Signage Co to complement our stationery designed by Bianco Blanc Paperie. Bia had used a monogram of our initials on all our stationery which tied everything together.

Orchids were a central theme for our florals. Whilst they were perfect for the opulent look we were seeking, they also offered a subtle hint to our planned honeymoon in Asia. 36

REAL WEDDINGS

Jack wore a black tuxedo with a fitted waistcoat, a House of Cavani suit from Yorkshire Menswear, Leeds and the groomsmen wore the same but without a waistcoat.

Serenade String Quartet played during our ceremony and drinks reception – there wasn’t a dry eye in the house when they started playing! We decided to have classical music for our ceremony to keep with the classic and timeless theme, but during our drinks reception, the quartet played a mix of pop and rock songs which our guests really enjoyed.

On the day, I think Jack was more nervous than me! I was quite calm – all the planning I had done for the previous two years had all come together and I was just excited to see everything and meet our suppliers in person!

I wanted to keep my accessories fairly simple, so chose a Linzi Jay cathedral length veil (also from Emily Bridalwear) with matching floral lace. My earrings and hair slide had flowers that matched the floral lace too – they were from Jon Richard and Wed2Be, respectively.

I loved seeing all our family and friends together after so long apart! I also loved how intimate and beautiful our ceremony area was, and how we got to enjoy the stunning gardens whilst getting married. It really was perfect.

The best man, Lee McCall, arranged for shots to be brought in during the speeches and we had a game of ‘Never Have I Ever’. This was a complete surprise to everyone and really got all the guests laughing. 37

My parents were absolutely fantastic and spent the day running around helping organise little surprises. We definitely felt the love! Jacob, our videographer, stepped in with less than a week’s notice, due to our previously booked photographer having to self-isolate. We can’t thank him enough for capturing all the special moments in such a beautiful way!

Charlotte, our photographer, was the absolute dream! She’s the world’s best confidence giver and made us feel like supermodels. All of our guests felt welcomed by her and she was really like a friend on the day rather than a photographer!

Our dog walker, Lesleyanne, also brought our dog, Beans, to our wedding. My husband had absolutely no idea! Although Beans wasn’t able to be part of the ceremony, he was waiting for us on the steps of Saltmarshe when we left the gardens and even had his little tuxedo on!

CHLOE’S TOP TIP! I didn’t listen when people told me the day goes past really quickly – it really does, enjoy every moment!

PLANNING SOS

PLANNING S O S Some of Yorkshire’s most sought-after suppliers give us the lowdown on how to be prepared ahead of your big day!

C

ongratulations, you’re engaged! So, what next? You just need to plan the biggest day of your life, no biggie! Don’t panic, we’re here to help. We’ve asked some of our favourite wedding companies to give us their top tips on what to consider before booking your suppliers. We’ve even split the suppliers up into three handy rounds, as a guide to when you should be contacting each type of business. Starting with…

ROUND ONE – THE VENUE AND PHOTOGRAPHER THE VENUE

What questions should you be asking when viewing the venue? We think couples should be asking the following questions: How much is the deposit and any future payment dates? What’s the maximum capacity of the room? What are the minimum catering numbers required for the room chosen? Do couples get a dedicated wedding coordinator to assist in the planning of the wedding? Does the venue have a toastmaster to ensure the smooth running of the day? What time can vendors access the room to set up? How will a couple know a venue is right for them? You’ve found the perfect venue when it matches your vision for the day, it fits into your budget and is available on the day you’re wanting. We think that the couple should get a really good feeling and just know when they’ve found the perfect venue!

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION

What should the happy couple consider when choosing their photographer? The most important thing is to find a photographer that delivers the style of images that matter to you. With the abundance of choices available to you, this may feel easier said than done. Look at photographer accounts on Instagram, pull together a Pinterest board of images that make your heart sing and find a photographer with a portfolio that fits your vision. It’s also important to find a photographer that you feel comfortable with – the last thing you want is a photographer who you don’t gel with or worse still, irritates you! To avoid this, try to find a time to grab a coffee and talk through your wedding plans with your photographer – find someone you get on with and is as excited about your wedding as you are. What questions should the soonlyweds ask their potential photographer? There are hundreds of wedding planning guides that’ll provide you with all the right questions to ask regarding issues such as contracts and legalities. But at the end of the day, the most important questions to ask are those that confirm the aspects that are most important to you. Would you be heartbroken not to have coverage of both you and your partner getting ready? If so, you may want to make sure your photographer brings a second shooter. Is it a deal breaker if you don’t have coverage up until the point when the last guest goes home? Are you planning an adventurous elopement and need a photographer to hike to the mountain top with you – or maybe it’s vital that your images will translate into wall art that look like a Vogue cover? Make a list of all the aspects of your photography matter most and make sure your

The Bridge Hotel & Spa | www.bridgewetherby.co.uk photographer can deliver. Ask your photographer to show you their portfolio, full wedding galleries and to describe the favourite weddings they’ve shot!

https://clarecoleman.com

What else should the couple consider? You should consider location, accessibility, parking, layout, services and ambiance.

What are your top tips to feel comfortable posing on the big day? There aren’t many people who naturally feel confident in front of the camera. My best advice is to book an engagement session with your chosen wedding photographer (many photographers offer this as part of their wedding package). This gives both you and your photographer a chance to get to know each other better and for you to get a taste of what it feels like to be the centre of attention. A good photographer will know how to work light, angles and locations to make you look your absolute best. Most important of all though is to relax, breathe and enjoy your day. After all, you’re marrying the love of your life and happiness shines through on a photograph! Clare Coleman Photography | https://clarecoleman.com 51

THE CAKE

What should the bride and groom consider when deciding the style of their cake? The style of your wedding cake should reflect you as a couple. The style may be influenced by many aspects of your day, the venue, the colour scheme, the feel of the wedding, maybe a bride’s dress, or the wedding invites. All of these parts come together to form the perfect cake, that reflects your day and you. Don’t limit yourselves to a certain style, just because it’s traditional or what’s expected. My only other piece of advice is, consider the venue and the temperature the cake will be kept at on the day. Buttercream cakes in a tent in the middle of summer, may not be the best idea! What are new trends in wedding cakes? Two new trends I’ve seen developing over this year and into next season are cakes as separates and coloured cakes. More couples are opting for individual tiers on different stands, in place of the traditional tiered cake. I think this is an

THE FLOWERS

When should you think about ordering your florist for your big day? We’d say try and think about getting your florist booked in as soon as possible, particularly if you have a specific one in mind. Like all suppliers, florists do get booked up really quickly, we specifically like to only take one or two weddings per weekend, particularly in peak season, so that means dates become limited quite quickly. Each florist is different, but we want to make sure we spend optimum time with our couples, chatting through ideas and making sure the initial consultation process is thorough so we can really get a proposal together that can help couples visualise their day. What should you bring to your appointment and what questions should you ask your florist? Anything and everything! The more information the better that helps you explain your vision about the whole of your day. Images of your dress (if you have it yet), the venue, stationery, suit ideas. This all helps us get an overall vision of what you’re looking for to help design your bespoke day. Any other suppliers you’ve also booked in already are good to know in case we can work with them, like a stylist. We advise you keep a Pinterest board or send us any images of the things you like too and ask us questions about what colours and textures you think might work with your ideas and inspirations. We’ll use these to spark our creative thoughts during your consultation to really highlight your original style. Sometimes it can also help to know what you really don’t want − as funny as it sounds − as that can then help us to design what you do like! It’s always good to ask questions around budget and be realistic, we have a minimum spend so that our couples are aware from the beginning where the starting range begins. It’s always good to have an open discussion around costs, your florist can really then tailor designs to your budget and let you know if things are out of season so might cost a little more or aren’t achievable. The most important takeaway is do your research on the florists you want to work with. Using platforms like Instagram is really helpful as 52

excellent option, especially when displayed as part of a dessert table. Each cake can match or be completely different. It definitely allows more room to make the cakes personalised. Coloured cakes are also big right now. Whether that be bright or pastel colours, or even neutral tones like beiges and stone colours. They look even more amazing when paired with a ribbon of the same colour. What flavour is always a good choice? My most chosen flavour is raspberry and white chocolate. Everyone loves the combination of the sweet and tart flavour. Most of my couples choose different flavours for each tier, this means you can pick a combination of flavours you think everyone will like and ones that you love the most. You can’t go wrong with the classics like vanilla and lemon, but why not combine them with something different like Cherry Bakewell? Katrina Armitage | www.katrinasbespokecakes.com

https://emmaryanphotography.co.uk

www.charlotteelizabethphotography.com

www.keyreflections.co.uk

ROUND TWO – PUTTING YOUR STAMP ON IT

you can instantly see what that florist’s style is like and if you love it. Check out their website, Facebook and Pinterest − if they have it. This will really give you a feel for them before you meet. I’d really advise you to choose a florist where you love their work. Every florist is slightly different and will interpret your brief differently working with their style. There’s a florist out there for everyone and it should feel easy and put you at ease. What trends will be big for floral arrangements and bouquets in 2022? Non-traditional floristry has been really popular for us and we think it’s due to continue − so things like using more dried florals or using a mix of fresh and dried together, it adds different textures and we’ve definitely found that our couples want more keepsakes from their day, particularly after the pandemic – with died florals they get to keep them forever! Asymmetrical-shaped bridal bouquets have also been popular, which we love – they are full of texture with beautiful design at the heart of them. Focal Installations: we’ve also found couples are wanting to spend more time thinking about certain areas within the venue they want to make a real statement feature of. Fireplaces, walkways, doorway arches. This means they are offering experiences for their guests too thinking about entrances and exits to really play with senses – using fragrant flowers can really add to this as well as bold colours. PLANNING SOS

ROUND THREE – FOOD, DRINK & FUN! WINING & DINING

What should the couple consider when planning the food for their big day? You should consider whether you are wanting a sit-down wedding breakfast or a more of a relaxed day with a BBQ or buffet. If you’re opting for a sit-down meal then you’ll need to decide if you’d like to offer your guests a choice or if you’ll choose one option for each course. Always remember to check with your venue to make sure they can cater for all dietary requirements. Do guests expect to pay for drinks during the wedding? Yes, guests do expect to pay for their own drinks. We think it’s nice to offer your guests a couple of drinks throughout the day by either offering an arrival drink, toast drink and maybe a glass of wine with the meal. Guests can then purchase their own drinks from the bar. What choices are currently popular in food during the day? We find that a carvery option is very popular, especially in the winter. Our carvery menu comes with the full choice there on the day for the guests to choose so the bride and groom don’t have to take all orders. We find that for more of a relaxed wedding in the summer then a nice outdoor BBQ is very popular.

What choices are currently popular in food during the evening? We offer a full hog roast for the evening and find that this is one of the firm favourites for brides and grooms. The Bridge Hotel & Spa | www.bridgewetherby.co.uk

LET THE MUSIC PLAY

What parts of the day does music always work? Times when guests are ‘unoccupied’ are always helped by some background music. It creates a talking point for friends and family and helps to ease any jitters or awkward silences as people settle into different parts of the day’s events such as being seated for the ceremony, the drinks reception whilst photos are being taken and of course, for partying afterwards! What songs work whatever the style of wedding? It’s hard to land on one genre that suits every wedding, but if your musician is enjoying themselves, that comes across and therefore everyone else in the room has a good time too, so pick your musicians to match your personal style! Hannah the Harp | www.hannahtheharp.co.uk

Kevin Webb Photography

What should the happy couple think about when planning the music on their big day? It’s helpful to think about where to put your musicians on the day and communicate this with your venue. You want to be able to hear them playing, especially if it has to be timed well for walking up the aisle, for example. Some spaces are ideal for a performance, whereas others are more appropriate for musicians providing background ambiance. Also check with your musicians what space and facilities they need to set up in terms of power outlets, access, lighting etc. Other considerations may crop up as you share your ideas and themes for your special day. For example, do you want your musicians to be formally dressed or is the day more casual? Is there a colour scheme? And of course, what are your favourite songs, and will your musician(s) perform them on the day for you!

Let me eat cake!

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

A

s some of you may know, my fiancé and I are due to get married in July 2022 – eek! We got engaged on Christmas Day 2020 and have been eagerly counting down the months waiting for the big day to arrive. We’ve booked most of our suppliers and are just finishing up the last few things, so fingers crossed the next few months go smoothly! In this issue, read about our search for the perfect entertainment and wedding cake.

JUST ONE SLICE We’ve been going back and forth since getting engaged about having a wedding cake. Dave doesn’t have a sweet tooth, while I can’t get enough of anything smothered in chocolate! After talking to our family (who were all team cake by the way) we decided to get one made up of layers of lemon and chocolate – delish! I found an amazing cake company in An Essex Wedding, which I emailed to see if they could replicate a semi-naked design I’d fallen in love with. We originally wanted a two-tier

design, but with 110 guests in the evening, we were informed that we would need a three-tier design to cater for 80 per cent of the people attending, the bigger the better I say. During my research, I came across a company that creates personalised cake toppers that were oh-so-cute I just had to have one! Made from clay, the topper will be figures of us dressed in our wedding attire accompanied by a model of our beloved cat. We’ve been told that the big day will fly by in the blink of an eye, so we’re keen to get mementos of the day that we can treasure for years to come and this cake topper will certainly be going in the wedding box. We’re so excited to see it all come together, but I’m also slightly nervous since we won’t see the finished designs until the reception. I have complete trust in our suppliers, but the control freak in me wishes I could do everything myself to ensure it’s perfect – but what do I honestly know about making cakes or moulding clay cats? So I’ll be leaving it to the professionals!

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY

54

Dave and I couldn’t decide if we wanted to have a band or DJ for our evening entertainment and it’s such a big part of the reception we knew we had to get it right. I came across an agency in An Essex Wedding that provides hundreds of bands across the UK. We spent hours going through the acts within our budget, and we eventually decided on one we loved. As companies are getting booked up quite far in advance due to the pandemic, it turned out the band we wanted was unavailable. We felt quite disheartened, but the representative came to the rescue listing a few alternatives that were within our price range and offered a similar type of music – problem solved! We decided that a three-piece all-male band suited us perfectly; they will play three sets with a DJ in between to ensure our guests are

entertained all night long. Choosing songs is a lot harder than we anticipated. The band has asked us to choose 10 from their repertoire, 30 we want to appear in their DJ set and one for our first dance. Dave and I have a similar taste in music, but it’s quite overwhelming trying to find tunes that represent us as a couple that will also keep our friends and family happy. For our first dance, we wanted something a bit different, so we’ve chosen I Just Don’t Think I’ll Get Over You by Colin Hay. To try and help us narrow down the other options, we’ve asked our guests to leave song suggestions on our wedding website, which will hopefully help us give us some ideas! Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s outfits.

Here’s my moodboard to give you heaps of inspiration.

BRIDE’S DIARY

Sparklers are a lovely addition to any photo, and I can’t wait to take some pictures in the evening with them.

To tie in with our rustic theme, we want a log slice cake stand, but I’m struggling to find one big enough!

Who doesn’t love a flower arch? Our florist is going to provide a small version outside our wedding marquee.

I’ve purchased some cute bridesmaids’ robes for the girls to wear on the morning of the wedding while they have their hair and make-up done.

Generally, I’m not a massive fan of pearls, so I’ve surprised myself by choosing to wear them on the day.

I’ve finally decided on an up do with a gorgeous pearl hairclip and veil.

My bridesmaids and I are going shopping soon and are looking for floor-length A-line gowns with flowing sleeves.

Dave and I are going to pick suits in January and are leaning towards something casual and blue.

The bridesmaids are planning to wear comfortable block heels. 55

DOUGLAS ABRAMSON OF CINDERELLA’S SAYS… Tell us about your boutique Our boutique is nestled in the town of Skipton also known as the gateway to the Dales. We’re just a stone’s throw from Skipton Castle and Holy Trinity Church, we love to listen to the bell ringing from the church at the weekend. It’s especially lovely to hear when brides are collecting their dresses ready for their big day! Every wedding dress sampled in-store is pictured online along with our very own walk-around video telling you all about each dress. This is also available on our YouTube channel www.dreamdress.co.uk What key piece of advice would you give to brides when dress shopping? Make sure to maximise the choice of dresses you have available to buy as you’ll need to allow a minimum of eight months from the time you order to your wedding date. What’s your favourite dress in the boutique? Emma-Claire, from the Silhouette Collection from Romantica of Devon. This is a dreamy choice for your wedding day and one of my favourite styles this season. I love the lace bodice and frothy tulle skirt, it’s just stunning. What are your top trend tips for 2022? Boho, plain fabrics and ’50s silhouettes will be big in 2022. Sparkly skirts are still popular with brides and coloured dresses are also making a comeback! 01756 791 007 | www.dreamdress.co.uk 63

I have so many favourites, especially from the bespoke bride collection, where sometimes we can create a dress with a bride that we didn’t even know existed! Our bespoke bride collection consists of dress components where you can build your dress in-store to create something which is truly original to you, and the options are limitless. However, if I had to choose, I’m loving exaggerated ballgown skirts in sumptuous silks and off the shoulder styles right now!

www.victoriabakerweddings.co.uk

www.victoriabakerweddings.co.uk

What are your top trend tips for 2022? The ballgown is back. If at all, lace is seen as a decorative element and plain fabrics are on the rise. Exaggerated sleeves are also going to be a huge trend and veils, especially worn over the face in a truly traditional style are becoming an increasingly popular look for brides. However, trends are there for inspiration and if it’s not you, don’t feel like you have to conform, your wedding day look should be an extension of your personality and you should feel your best self in it, whatever that may be! 07498 223 712 | www.stephaniemorancouture.com

KERENSA DYSON FROM BIJOU BRIDAL BOUTIQUE SAYS… Tell us about your boutique Bijou Bridal Boutique is nestled in the beautiful west Yorkshire town of Holmfirth and offers brides an award-winning bridal experience to find their dream dress. The collections of British designer gowns focus on the bride looking for a timeless, classic but traditional style of wedding gown with a modern edge. The boutique also offers a British bridesmaid collection of mix and match styles, along with luxury bridal accessories including veils, shoes and hair adornments, all by leading British bridal designers. What key piece of advice would you give to brides when dress shopping? As a result of the pandemic which is causing worldwide shipping problems throughout every industry including bridal, my key piece of advice for brides who are planning to start wedding dress shopping would be to start at least a year to 18 months before their wedding and perhaps to consider looking at collections by British designers who manufacture their collections on home soil, like the ones I have in the boutique. It has been reported in the press that there could be a delay of up to eight months for dresses that are ordered from overseas manufacturers. However, the beauty of shopping with a British designer whose designs are made in this country, means you can guarantee that your dress will not be delayed due to the shipping crisis as they’re all made here in the UK. What’s your favourite dress in the boutique? It’s very hard to pick an absolute favourite as they’re all hand-picked by me for my brides but currently Melba by Alan Hannah has to be top of the collections. She’s a beautiful rose damask full skirted gown with deep V neckline and statement bow! She’s a modern, classic gown with a hint of sexiness! What are your top trend tips for 2022? This year was the first opportunity for me to visit a bridal trade show since the pandemic started nearly two years ago to see the new trends coming through and it was apparent everywhere that sparkle is making a huge comeback! Whether you have some sparkle on your wedding gown or you accessorise with it on your headdress or veil, 2022 is definitely going to be the time to sparkle! 01484 690 454 | https://bijoubridalboutique.com

Nick Porter Photography

What key piece of advice would you give to brides when dress shopping? There are so many tips that are useful when wedding dress shopping but I think the most important thing is to do your research first and enjoy the experience. Wedding dress shopping is playing the ultimate dress up! Don’t take yourself too seriously and have some fun with it. There’s a strong possibility you’ll try on styles that’ll do nothing for you (or your confidence) brush it off and continue your journey of finding the dress that allows you to be the perfect you.

STEPHANIE MORAN OF STEPHANIE MORAN COUTURE SAYS… Tell us about your boutique At Stephanie Moran Couture, we offer a welcoming and individual experience for the modern bride. From all our services in the boutique, you’ll find a couture approach to bridal design as all our dresses are created in our in-house studio by myself and my team. The options available are limitless, meaning you truly can create something that fits both you and your wedding vision perfectly. Each appointment is exclusive which means you and your bridal party can truly get creative. Our dresses are stylish, elegant, and individually created with you in mind.

SUSAN HIRST OF BRIDAL APPAREL LEEDS SAYS… Tell us about your boutique We’re a small, family-run bridal boutique and our focus is on the experience the bride and her guests have when visiting our setting. What key piece of advice would you give to brides when dress shopping? I explain to the bride that this day is a day to gain experience as to what dress will suit your body shape so that she’s comfortable as well as looking stunning. We always say, “Feel how you feel, before you look how you look.” This way, if you feel good, you’re very likely to look amazing. We found that heavy, uncomfortable boning went out the day Covid came in. The bride’s mindset changed and yes, they want to look amazing but they really want something they can wear and have a brilliant day in too. The dress has to suit the venue. I know that may sound silly but if it’s a barn or outside venue then soft flowing natural boho styles work perfectly. A church often suits something more traditional with the big train and veil. We like to educate our brides about all the options that are open to them along with a sit-down chat for about 10 minutes to get to know the bride’s likes and dislikes.

BRIDAL BOUTIQUES

Bianco Evento

What are your top trend tips for 2022? The year 2022 will be very mixed from what I can see from the Harrogate and London Bridal exhibitions – expect very simple dresses as well as very over the top beaded full skirts. Black is also making a comeback. We’re also doing a catsuit next year that I’m sure will be popular! 0113 250 1616 | www.bridalapparelleeds.co.uk

KATE FEARNLEY OF KATE FEARNLEY BOUTIQUE SAYS… Tell us about your boutique We’ve recently moved the business to a lovely converted station building in Stokesley, north Yorkshire. Everything is designed and made from our studio which is situated above the boutique. The boutique is light and fresh with beautiful views of the Yorkshire hills. Inside there are two separate ground floor showrooms, one for all bridal collections and the other for our occasionwear samples. The interior is a romantic and modern mix with velvet and chrome fittings. We work by appointment and offer a bespoke option to our ready to wear collections which can now be seen in selected UK stockists. What key piece of advice would you give to brides when dress shopping? Be open minded on styles and shapes and try different looks outside of your comfort zone to find the right style for you. Don’t have too many people at your initial appointment when trying styles on so you can concentrate on what you like without too many opinions.

Bianco Evento

What’s your favourite dress in the boutique? Petal is one of my favourites as it’s fashion forward and very easy to wear. The illusion top and 3D flower cascade down the crepe satin circular skirt with pockets works really well for the modern bride. What are your trend predictions for 2022? Less formal styles, sleeve detailing, floral and feather embroidery detailing, flowing skirts with pockets. 01642 638 477 | https://katefearnley.com 65

BUZZ BEAT THE WINTER BLUES

Suffering from a winter skin slump? One of the best ingredients to get your through it is hyaluronic acid, which has an amazing way of getting that missing glow and hydration back on track. Faye Purcell, product development chemist and skincare expert at Q+A says, “Being exposed to winter environments can cause the outer layer of skin to dry out, leading to irritation, flakiness and lack of radiance. Opting for a humectant like hyaluronic acid is vital as it draws moisture from the air into the skin. When it’s absorbed it can release that moisture directly into our cells and help retain it for longer.” Check out Q+A’s latest range focusing on this all-important ingredient, which includes a Hydrating Cleanser (£7.50), Face Mist (£6.50) and Facial Serum (£6.50). EDITOR LOVES

We’re all washing our hands a lot more often than we used to and while it’s super-important to keep that up, it does cause the skin to suffer. Frequent use of hand sanitiser too can compromise the skin’s microbiome, leading to dryness, roughness and signs of ageing. If these woes sound familiar, check out Mavala’s new Prebiotic Hand Cream. With a rich formula it offers immediate comfort to those with sensitive, delicate and dry hands. It contains 87 per cent natural-origin ingredients and offers the necessary nutrients to maintain the balance of microbiological activity of the skin. What I also love is that it doesn’t leave behind that annoying greasy residue that puts me off a lot of hand creams. It sinks in fast and my cuppa doesn’t slip through my fingers! It’s now a desk essential. You can find Mavala Prebiotic Hand Cream in leading pharmacies, priced at £16.

It’s suitable for daily use too though – simply pat a small amount around the eye area morning and night. Find it at https://odile.co.uk, priced at £45. 71

Don’t underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep – it’s vital for fighting off tiredness, stress and winter bugs. But beware hibernation mode. It’s tempting to oversleep during dark winter months, but this can make you feel sluggish. Aim for around eight hours a night and try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day to encourage a healthy bedtime routine. Natural remedies such as Together Health’s Night Time Marine Magnesium Complex (£12.99, www.togetherhealth.co.uk) can also be hugely beneficial. ASK THE EXPERTS

THE PERFECT COMPLEXION I’m getting married summer 2022 and although I want sunny weather, I’m really worried about being sweaty and shiny! What should I do throughout the day to combat this? It’s important to start with the correct skincare underneath your make-up base, a moisturiser that’s not too thick or greasy. I like Vitamin E Face Base by Bobbi Brown as it’s oil free and has a built-in primer to help foundation stay on for longer. An oily skin would be benefit from an oil-free foundation that has a matte finish, as the dewier types will melt off quickly on a hot day. I love the Skin Weightless Foundation by Bobbi Brown. Oil absorbing papers by NYX are great for patting away extra shine throughout the day. This means you are removing it rather than constantly powdering more product on top to disguise it. You can of course carry a compact powder to dust on once you have used the papers. For clients who sweat a lot on the face, there’s a fantastic product that acts as an anti-perspirant for the face. It’s called Neat 3B Face Saver Gel. You apply this under your foundation to stop you sweating your make-up off. Finally, to refresh and revive your skin on a hot day you can spritz on a facial mist by Caudalie.

Our local pros solve your problems

BRING ON THE BOUNCE I really want my hair in big curls on my wedding day. How do I stop them dropping throughout the day? Prep, prep, prep! It’s most definitely all in the preparation of the hair. Big curls are a fab choice for dream wedding hair though you must consider your hair type and the weather. There’s no magic fix that’ll stop a curl dropping on some hair types if there’s moisture or humidity in the air. Start your wedding hair prep with a shampoo and conditioner that’s paraben, sulphate and silicone free, these leave no residue on the hair to dull and weigh the hair down. Healthy, hydrated hair immediately has more bounce so remember to start your hair care regime as soon as you set your wedding date! A volumising product is a must for fine and flimsy hair to give the hair bigger, fuller body, with a style holding grip to keep those curls big and bouncy all day. Use hot tools to curl the hair then pin each curl in place allowing the curl to cool down and set. Then use a wide tooth comb or your hands to pull the curls through to get your desired look then spritz away with a firm hold hairspray. Deborah Chalmers www.lovehairandbeautyboutique.com 75

HOT TOPIC Our local experts solve your wedding dilemmas

STYLING YOUR DAY I have been looking at Pinterest every night and my moodboard is starting to become a bit jumbled. How do I get back on track? Try not to become overwhelmed by all of your choices. As soon as you start to worry, you start to put more pressure on yourself. Your wedding day should be a day to remember, not a day to worry about the bridesmaid dresses matching the florals. Before you start to look through your moodboard, sit down with your partner and begin to visualise your day, what few words immediately come to mind? Rustic, elegant, intimate? Then also think about what you don’t want at your wedding, a few things may have slipped through the net and made it onto your current moodboard without you realising. Baring these few words in mind begin to have a look through your current moodboard. Save the first five to 10 images that immediately jump out at you, but try not to save five of the same things, keep it a mix of florals, table settings, stationery etc. Each image should bring something different to your new moodboard. With your saved images write down what it is that you love about the image. Is it the colours, the textures, and do these match up to your vision? As you start to pin your images to a new board these should begin to reflect your overall vision and colour palette. If you do begin to be swayed by other pins, resort back to this mood board and think to yourself will I love this image in one, two, three months’ time or do I just like it in this moment? When it comes to your moodboard, this should be a reflection of the both of you and your personalities. Jodie Knott | Knotted in Love www.knottedinlove.co.uk 76

THE RIGHT RING FOR YOU My husband has no idea what wedding band to go for. Please can you give me a lowdown of the basics we need to consider? When choosing a wedding band for the gentlemen, there’s still so much to consider. Firstly, what area of work is he in? For instance, if he works in construction, it’s best to go for a rounded profile, this way, it’s less likely to get in the way. Always find a ring that works with your every day, a bulky ring won’t be the ideal option if he’s an active person, outside or inside of work. Next it would be best if you thought about the aesthetics of the ring. Does he usually wear jewellery? If so, what’s his preferred metal? What type of style does he have? Is it modern or alternative? Matching your ring up to his everyday look will only complement it. Lastly, you have the practical elements of the wedding band. You should always opt for the most durable and hardwearing metal so that it lasts for years to come, even with everyday wear. We recommend platinum, a metal that’s both strong and resistant to tarnishing. Shannon Mugford | Joshua James www.joshuajamesjewellery.co.uk

SUSTAINABLY BEAUTIFUL Myself and my partner are passionate about sustainability. I want my wedding to be absolutely stunning but am unsure about what flowers to choose without them all being from overseas. Any advice? Sustainability in the wedding industry is a hot topic. The great news is that making positive changes with a conscience doesn’t mean compromising on style. Whether you feel that a small bouquet of wildflowers or having lots of flowers is important to your wedding day then we have many ways of creating incredible designs in a more sustainable way using these simple techniques: Floral foam free designs: Traditional floristry foam isn’t biodegradable, so we never use this in our designs. Use more seasonal flowers: Seasonal flowers provide incredible quality, freshness, scent and style making designs that reflect the season of your wedding. Re-use designs: We love to make designs work hard by moving them throughout the day from the wedding ceremony to the reception. Grown not flown: With incredible British flower growers we don’t need to use imported flowers. In the winter months it’s more challenging, so we use fair trade imported flowers wherever possible. Recycling flowers: If you can’t re-use your flowers after the wedding then gift them on to a charity for someone else to reuse and enjoy them.

THE VENUE CHECKLIST I have just got engaged and have started looking at venues. My mind is boggled, where do I begin? There are so many venues out there it’s no wonder you’re boggled! The key thing which any venue will ask first is how many guests. Make your list, argue about your list, and come up with a number. Then consider are all those people coming for the whole day, or are you having an evening do? Do you want to have a civil or religious ceremony? Are you wanting a specific type of food? Will you have a live band or a DJ? Do you want the whole place to yourself? Do you prefer a modern or traditional setting? Have you got a budget to work to? All of these questions are really important to have clear in your mind, and will define the starting point for any venue discussion. Next, decide on a date. With pandemic restrictions, a lot of weddings have had to be rescheduled, so you can expect venues and suppliers to be busier than usual, therefore availability is key. You might need to be willing to compromise. For a small Yorkshire wedding with total exclusivity, consider The Yorke Arms in Ramsgill. For larger weddings, consider Bowcliffe Hall. Both come with dedicated teams ready to make your wedding day dreams come true. Laura Shinkfield | Bowcliffe Hall & The Yorke Arms www.bowcliffehall.co.uk | www.theyorkearms.co.uk

NAILED IT! I always choose a French manicure and want my nails to look a bit different on my wedding day. What styles will work? Sometimes nothing beats a classic and simple French, it’s chic, timeless and basically goes with any outfit, event or occasion. But if this is something you regularly have and feel that for your big day a little change is what you need then we have a few takes on the classic that might just be for you. We’d recommend incorporating the classic but with a little twist, changing up detailing, colours and finishes. Our favourites include the French tip made without a line and instead using white dots. A white nail with other nail designs incorporated – for those who really want to try something different. Or maybe try a French with a glitter? It’s a take on the classic but a little more fun and perfect for a winter wedding! Filiz Ozakinci | Studio Sister www.studiosister.co.uk 77

HONEYMOON

A round up of new openings and honeymoon essentials

When the big day is over, it’s time for newlyweds to pack for the honeymoon! Whether sunbathing on a secluded island or adventuring on an adrenaline-fuelled getaway, gift specialist Farrar and Tanner has everything you need to make the honeymoon even more memorable...

The modern and sophisticated style of the Wolf Windsor watch box elegantly displays and safely stores your watch collection. The grained vegan leather finish surrounds a glass window which lets you view and easily choose your timepiece for the day. A beautiful gift that can be personalised with an engraved message on a silver plate on the front.

The elegant Evo watch, from the iconic Mondaine series, features a stainless steel case, gently rounded with a slightly domed sapphire glass. This creates a magnifying effect accentuating the famous Mondaine watch face. With its large dial, clear hour and minutes lines and distinctive hands, the Evo has a truly timeless feel.

The Barbour wash bag is practical, classically stylish and highly durable. Featuring a cream tartan print, the bag has been designed to conveniently store your make-up and travel essentials. It has a zip-around fastening for easy access, an internal zip pocket for keeping your precious and valuable items, and a PU leather handle to carry or hang up for neat storing.

Stackers’ new larger version of its popular travel jewellery box, can now house more precious items! Featuring a soft velvet lining, there’s a section for storing rings and earrings and a central area divider (removable) perfect for necklaces or bracelets. There’s also a charming petite travel box and, to make it a truly personal gift, why not add a loved one’s initials?

Manufactured by Hans Kniebes, the soft premium leather case has a modern and elegant design with a zip fastening. Held securely inside are heat-hardened nail scissors, clippers and nail file, slanted tweezers, cuticle pusher and a hoopstick. For an individual touch, you can add personalised engraving to the nail clippers.

Travel in elegance and style with the Chelsea weekender bag by Ashwood Leather. Stunningly crafted from carefully chosen leather this is the ideal choice for weekend city breaks and minimoons. Finished in a high-shine chestnut shade, the included luggage tag can be embossed with a name or short message.

SWITZERLAND

Ruby Mimi in Zurich opened in October 2021, and is the first hotel of the Munich-based Ruby Group, to open in Switzerland. Situated where one of the first cinemas in Zurich used to thrill audiences more than 100 years ago, the Art Deco-listed hotel’s 208 rooms are spread over its seven floors. The new hotel takes guests on a journey back to the exciting golden era of Hollywood of the 1910s and 1920s with its charming cinema hall. A reminder of the building’s history, its cosy armchairs, red velvet curtains and popcorn machine create a retro cinema feeling. Ruby Hotels follow a clear structure: a location in the heart of the city, top design and high-quality furnishings, focusing on the essentials in order to remain affordable. There are six different room categories available at Ruby Mimi in Zurich, ranging from the NEST Rooms and COSY Rooms to the spacious LOFT Rooms and STAR Rooms which are particularly striking. They are inspired by five starlets of the 1910s who all bore the name Mimi, and each of the rooms feature historical dressing tables and a chaise longue. Average room rates range from CHF 210-230 per night. For more information, visit www.ruby-hotels.com/mimi

DO NOT DISTURB

OASIS OF CALM

A careful renovation has preserved features while adding in contemporary comforts in both the white-bricked Pavilion and Temple buildings that make up this Berkshire-based YTL Hotels property. It’s accessed via a footbridge (after checking in at the Boat House on the mainland) and is home to luxury accommodation in a choice of 40 stylish bedrooms and The Wedgewood Suite commanding prime position in the original Temple building with wrap-around views. As the hotel’s grandest offering for newlyweds, this spacious Grade I listed suite boasts character features including the original Wedgewood blue ceiling with contrasting white friezes, a custom-designed bed with an upholstered headboard, a separate seating area and a walk-in closet with an exposed bath tub. The Barn Rooms, located off the island adjacent to the private residences, offer a great option for wedding guests equipped with marble en suite bathrooms and walk-in showers.

The Floating Spa By Spa Village is nestled in a tranquil spot moored on the banks of the river. It’s only open to hotel residents and the wellness journey starts the moment you step onboard with a choice of indulgent treatments. A must-try is The Floating Massage by Moss of the Isles performed while lying on an aqua cushion, giving the illusion you’re floating on a cloud of warm water.

MADE FOR ROMANCE Weddings take place in a choice of elegant function suites located in the Pavilion. Ceremonies are held in the impressive River Room with its floor-to-ceiling windows revealing far-flung views of the river and idyllic surroundings. There’s direct access to a private patio area with a firepit and couples wanting an outdoor ceremony can enjoy the foliage-clad gazebo with guests seated outside on the lawn. The Art Deco-inspired Marlborough Ballroom

THEMED VENUES

with a statement botanical chandelier, mirrored panelling and doors leading to the manicured grounds hosts the wedding breakfast and reception, and both this and the River Room can be hired exclusively. There’s also the option of securing a marquee for up to 300 guests from the hotel’s list of preferred suppliers, and exclusive use of the entire estate can be booked. Bespoke options are also available bride arriving by boat? Of course! An outdoor gathering under a stretch tent? The talented team can make it happen.

A FOODIE HEAVEN At the heart of the hotel is The Monkey Island Brasserie, flanked by an outdoor terrace boasting waterway views, serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Couples passionate about food will love the relaxed, informal vibe and classic British dishes created using seasonal ingredients from local suppliers and the on-site herb garden (a stroll over to this is well worth it – spot the beehives and resident hens while you’re there, too!) On the dinner menu is a pan-fried fillet of chalk-stream trout served with salsa verdi and a butter aged 250-gram sirloin steak with Béarnaise sauce and hand-cut chips. The avocado toast served with a poached hen’s egg is the perfect fuel for the day at breakfast.

Those wishing to relax with an after-dinner drink can do so in The Monkey Bar where the Harrow & Hope Brut Reserve and Monkey Shoulder blended malt scotch whiskey are to be tried. For a cheeky late-night tipple, The Whiskey Snug, accessed via a secret staircase, is not to be missed, especially for the romantic view of the footbridge lit up at night.

WHAT’S NEW? The Shepherd’s Hideaway is nestled in a private spot in the grounds, decorated with contemporary countryside interiors. Memories can be made at this hand-crafted hut, with a celebratory afternoon tea or a gourmet picnic for between two and six guests that can be booked as an add-on to an overnight stay. Non-residents at the hotel are also welcome, perfect for visitors to the delightful village of Bray-on-Thames, where this island resides, to enjoy.

Book it: Nightly rates at Monkey Island Estate start from £275 per room, per night in a Temple Room. 01628 623 400, www.monkeyislandestate.co.uk www.facebook.com/MonkeyIslandEstate www.instagram.com/monkeyislandestate
