Recently, I was involved in some situations where I needed to begin to work on getting past the fear point in order to accomplish a specific goal. This article explains in a general way why we have fears and offers a few suggestions that can help us get past that threshold where a moderate or intense fear holds us back. Determine Why We Are Afraid
·0 First of all, we need to understand and accept that fear in some situations is a natural
response to potential danger. Our survival instinct kicks in and our body response in accordance with this. Rather than resisting this general fact or feeling guilty because we respond this way, understanding why we are afraid and accepting that It’s our body's natural response to danger reduces mental and emotional stress to a degree.
·1 Some of us may have mental and physical limitations that play a factor in what we fear and our ability to control those fears, etc. Any conditions like brain injuries, developmental disabilities, and some mental health issues can affect what activities and/or situations that are appropriate for us to participate in.
·2 If we determine our fear is an overreaction to a situation, we need to take the time to find out why. Some fears can be diffused for the most part ahead of time by going back in our past history and finding why and when we learned to fear this specific thing or situation. A Few Practical Preparation Pointers
·3 Remember past victories and encourage yourself. Remember what it felt like when you overcame that past fear and remind yourself if you did it once, you can do it again.
·4 Evaluate potential outcomes including worst case scenario. Let's just be honest with ourselves and maybe others if needed about the worst that could occur.
·5 Prepare adequately for potential dangers ahead of time. So if real danger is a possibility, you can prepare ahead of time to avoid these dangers and/or learn how to deal with the worst case outcome if it would occur and you're still alive to deal with it.
·6 Now that you have prepared adequately ahead, you can use “positive self-talk" to get
yourself moving forward. With the concept of words having and releasing power, we can start “talking ourselves into moving forward" toward our goals and past our fears. Now It's Time to Move Forward
Now that you have evaluated your abilities and fears as well as adequately prepared yourself, It’s time to act relatively quickly in order to get past the fear threshold. What keeps people stuck is over thinking and delaying too long. Once we overcome that initial Impulse to stay stuck in the same place, it becomes easier to do it again.
