What Are the Qualities of a Hero?

Page 1

A coworker of mine passed away a couple of years ago leaving me with a mixture of feelings I needed to sort out. As I thought through the multiple experiences I had with him previous to his passing, I realized what I missed most about him were positive qualities that make up what we would call a "hero."

So what are these qualities that we admire so much in people we call heros?

¡0 Courage- When faced with fear, heros chose courage. This is one of the most notable qualities of a hero. It has been suggested that heros are more optimistic in their thinking. What I've found is that people who do above average accomplishments overcome fear not by ignoring fear, but by redirecting those feelings into the excitement of a more optimistic future.

¡1 Compassion- People who become heros have a genuine concern and/or empathy for others.

¡2 Sacrifice- Compassion compels heros to put aside their own agendas when they get in the way of a higher cause or the welfare of others.

·3 Free Thinkers- Heros tend to make up their own mind about key issues instead of following the crowd's opinions.

·4 Integrity- Research suggests this is one of the more prominent characteristic of a hero. They make decisions in line with their values and are willing to face risk and/or danger in order to keep their principles.

·5 Perseverance- An unyielding commitment to a positive course of action is a quality that separates a hero from the average person who "follows the herd."

·6 Unknown and obscure- People who become heros in history are usually not famous at first. They are obscure like David the shepherd boy in the Bible or Ghandi in India. Their recognition often occurs later in their life or even after their death.

·7 Confidence- Heros have faith that they will be able to overcome challenges, complete the tasks ahead of them, achieve their goals, and fulfill their vision and/or mission. So thinking back to my coworker...

The qualities that stood out to me were free thinking, sacrifice, intergrity, and confidence. These qualities were a living example to challenge me to aspire to rise to my highest potential.

But isn't that what a true hero can really do for all of us? Many times these people are not recognized or even liked during their lifetime because of their nonconformity. But history reveals the legacy they left that will challenge all of us to rise to our highest potential despite our present challenges and circumstances.

So right now in your life who do you know who has the qualities of a hero and how do these qualities inspire you?
