Holidays, Special Days, Tradition, and Their Role in Human Social Experience

Page 1

So what role in human social experience do you think holidays, special days, and traditions play? In North America we are between two significant holidays; Thanksgiving and Christmas. New Years Day is also on the way. First of all, let's talk about tradition in general with its pros and cons. Tradition-It's Ups and Downs In my local geographic region there is a major river that separates two counties. Just as with many water bodies, there are many recreational activities that take place here like boating, for example. Years ago a law was "written in the books" prohibiting swearing while on this water body. I have yet to see police officers patrolling the waters in order to ticket "marine potty mouths." So there you have it, a law that's

been a tradition for years without any practical way to enforce it

On the other hand, there are fun traditions that certain cultures celebrate like birthday celebrations for example. Here's where we are going to turn the corner and discuss the role of positive traditions in society as a whole.

A Couple of Reasons for Special Days

Times of remembrance- the most obvious example in the North American culture is Memorial Day where Americans take the time to recognize all those who served in the military to defend our many freedoms. Shared recognition and celebration- New Years day serves this function or a similar function in many cultures. This is a day when many recognize the successes of last year and the upcoming challenges of the new year. Building closeness and lasting memories among family and friends. Sometimes these memories are positive, sometimes less than positive. When the memories are positive they can give us the courage and maybe a reason larger than ourselves to

move forward with goals and aspirations ahead of us. ¡3

Change of pace and time off. Without times of rest, refocusing, and celebration, we would most probably burn out. Most cultures have these special days.

Summing It All Up

Holidays, special days, and positive traditions serve multiple purposes in the human social experience. Some of these purposes are times of remembrance, building closeness and lasting memories, shared recognition and celebration, and a change of pace and time off. What Does This Mean for You As more holidays are approaching and you reflect on what each means to you, what functions or role in your human experience do these holidays, special days, and traditions play and what are some specific actions you can take during these days to fully experience these special moments?
