The Three D's that Keep Us Running on the Right Track

Page 1

Before getting into the three D's that keep us running on the right track, I would like to talk about four things that can take us off track. Two of these things I recently saw on an old Twilight Zone episode in which a woman in her 40's locked herself in the room of a house reminiscing about her younger years in acting as she watched old films from the 1930's. She lost her passion and will to live in the present. How did this happen?

¡0 "Rotten can come after ripe." This is a reworded quote I heard fairly recently from a CD I was listening to. The speaker's point was that once a dream is fulfilled, we need a new dream to move forward or we become stagnant or rotten.

¡1 Inevitably change will occur, but personal growth is our choice. In this particular episode of the Twilight Zone, a former actress ended up disappearing into a movie screen from the past, since she was in denial of the reality of the present. Personal life experience also has shown me that personal loss and failure can throw us off course as well. The pain of both of these things can disappoint us and also discourage us if we allow them to. The Three D's Desire, dscipline, and direction keep us on track with our goals and dreams. Desire gives us the drive to move forward, discipline keeps us doing the right things consistently, and direction keeps us focused on what's important. Each of these three elements is equally important and each of these individual elements uphold the other. The best illustration I can think of is a threelegged stool.

How Can Success, Change, Loss, and Failure Immobilize Us?

·2 Boredom can lead to living in the past. We need to discover new dreams and goals when we have reached our present dreams and goals.

·3 Not accepting change can lead to living in the past. We need to welcome and learn how to work with the changing world around us.

·4 Disappointment can lead to discouragement. Although everyone gets disappointed, discouragement essentially is losing the courage to move forward or continue on. Encouragement is the necessary alternative to discouragement and encouragement is what's needed to move on from disappointment. A Couple More Solutions

·5 Learn how to dream again! ·6 See change as a "gateway" to a new chapter in your life! ·7 Allow yourself to experience emotions like disappointment, sadness, anger, etc. at the right time and context for the experience to be generally "relieveing, releasing, and productive."

·8 Realize handling loss and failure in life can be like surfing ocean waves; you may feel the downward pull, but a new wave will eventually rise.

Summation Boredom, change, loss, and failure are all part of our life experience and well as emotions like disappointment, sadness, anger, etc. Just like an ocean wave, life can be "up and down" at times. We can learn how to "ride the waves" and stay on course by applying desire, discipline, and direction. Your Turn How do you handle boredom, change, loss, and failure? Do you allow yourself to experience disappointment, sadness, anger at the most productive time and practice the three D's that keep us running on the right track?
