This opened up further opportunity to showcase his talents for game day entertainment at professional sporting events around the country. It is therefore not surprising that he was cast as Buddy in the 1997 Disney film Air Bud. The film was financially successful, grossing $4 million in its opening weekend and totaling $27.8 million in its run against an estimated $3 million budget.

Robert Uggie

appeared in "The Incredible Dog Show" from August 2010 onwards, which was a dog tour showcasing dogs with tricks. His trick was riding a skateboard. He, then, went on to appear in the 2011 silent movie The Artist, and it was this role which brought him to the attention of mass media, with some critics describing him as "stealing every scene”. He had two stunt doubles in the film, named Dash and Dude, who were colored to look more like Uggie, but Uggie did most of his own stunts and the doubles were barely required. Uggie and his trainers spent three days with the film's star Jean Dujardin to teach the French actor the verbal commands and hand signals Uggie needed in a scene. Because it was a silent film, the trainers could also call out commands while the film was rolling. Uggie attended the American Film Institute premiere of the film and walked the red carpet along with the rest of the cast.

at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, on June 25, 2012. His memoir Uggie, My Story was published in the United States, the UK, and France, in October 2012. So far, Uggie, Lassie, Rin Tin Tin and Strongheart were all honored with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. And, while no dog has ever received an Oscar, yet, story has it that Rin Tin Tin, was actually the unofficial, First Best Actor Academy Award winner of all time! Indeed, in her book, Rin Tin Tin: The Life and the Legend, Susan Orlean writes that: “According to Hollywood legend, Rinty received the most votes for best actor. But members of the Academy, anxious to establish the awards were serious and important, decided that giving an Oscar to a dog did not serve that end"

"That first year that the Oscars were awarded, it seems to have been more a popularity contest than a serious assessment of performance. In terms of popularity, Rin Tin Tin didn’t have a peer, He was a huge star around the world and helped Warner Bros transition from its start as a small studio into a large one. I can’t imagine that Emil Jannings was opening films, but Rin Tin Tin certainly did.” Susan Orlean, who worked as a staff writer at The New Yorker and has been hailed as “a national treasure” by The Washington Post, spent nearly ten years researching the dog’s journey from orphaned puppy to movie star icon, and reporting her most captivating book to date: the story of a dog who was born in 1918 and never died. We sat down with Susan Orlean to learn more about one of her most fascinating projects. "Once I learned Rin Tin Tin's history I was fascinated, and couldn't resist digging further. I loved learning about a dog who had represented so much to so many people, and whose story spanned such an intriguing stretch of history. He was a real dog, but he was also a symbol of all the dogs in our lives. I've written a lot about animals over the years, and it's always challenging, since they can't talk, and so interesting. We have such complicated and fulfilling relationships with them. And, you learn a lot about people by writing about animals."

THE HOLLYWOOD LIVES OF JUJU & HENRY

Model: Juju Brener Photographer: Olianna Port HMU: Martin Lane Christopher

Meet Juju Juju Brener is a working Hollywood actress from Los Angeles, CA. Her parents named her Journey as in the ‘the path of life’. But, when she was a toddler, her mom and sister nicknamed her Juju, after Jujubes, the gummy candy, and the name stuck. Juju comes from a very creative family. Her grand mother, Smadar Brener is an Israeli cinema icon, dating back to the 70’s. Her mother, Shirly Brener is an actress and producer who had a long career in Hollywood, and Israel. Her father, Bruce Rubenstein, is an abstract expressionist modern artist from NYC, who's worked as a writer and producer on major Hollywood movies and TV shows. And, Juju’s sister, Mila, is also an actress, who’s been in many cool shows and movies, over the years, including Nick Jr’s Mutt & Stuff; a show about a wacky and whimsical school just for dogs! Juju’s recent projects include a dog movie she’s done with her co-star Henry, called The Furry Fortune, and Disney’s Hocus Pocus 2 where she plays the young Sarah Sanderson, played by Sarah Jessica Parker. Tell us about Hocus Pocus 2. What was it like filming this iconic Disney movie? “I’m very excited about Hocus Pocus 2, which will premier on Sept 30th. I know fans have been waiting for this sequel for nearly three decades, and will be pleased with the tone, the look, the characters and all the surprises in the script. It’s also incredible how it reunited the original stars: Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy. It’s so cool to be part of such a cultural phenomenon, and classic! Hocus Pocus 2 set was incredible! We shot in Rhode Island, where they built the whole city of 1600’s Salem from scratch in Chase Park. Also being a part of the Disney family is so special to me since its been my favorite since I could remember. It was also great to be a part of a female driver project; directed by a female director, Anne Fletcher, a female producer, Lynn Harris and a female writer, Jen D’Angelo. Being surrounded by a female cast was super special to me, and very inspiring. Everyone on set knew they were making something that is gonna be a part of movie history, and I am forever grateful for this experience."

40

Tell us about The Furry Fortune. What was it like having a dog co-star? "Filming The Furry Fortune will always be one of my most memorable experiences, not just because I had so much fun filming a movie with Henry, but because he inspired us to get a dog of our own. Spending the summer with Henry made me realize how much I wanted a dog of my own, and I finally manifested it! Meeting Henry, who is a rescue, and his owner, Courtney, who is a rescue advocate, was very inspiring, and helped convince our parents to get a dog, finally. My sister and I have been begging our parents for years. My dad is a huge dog person. He even has his first dog – Tony Curtis tattooed on his arm. But, our parents kept saying that they made a choice to pause from pets due to our busy lifestyle. After filming The Furry Fortune, we attended one of Debbie Durkin’s Eco Luxe events in LA, and it was at that event that we met Dani Abraham who heads the social media at Wagmor Pets— a local rescue group. Dani invited us to some adoption events, and that’s how we found Pixie— a 5 lb Chihuahua mix. I still cant believe my dream to have a dog came true! When I’m older I plan on having 4 dogs, and at least 2 of them will be big ones!” Tell us about your glamorous Hollywood life, and what are some of the projects that we should look out for? “Our family is super close. We spend a lot of time together, helping each other create, laughing and traveling. I love movies and music. I also love fashion, everything sweet, and anything Disney!” explains the ten-year-old Hollywood starlet, who just wrapped filming the comedy Born Again, a sequel to Born in East LA, which is set for a theatrical release in 2023. "This year, I also started expanding with fashion and music. Recently I got to co-create a capsule denim collection with YMI Jeans, which is launching in October. Getting to design my own denim line has been a dream come true. It was amazing to partner with a brand that fits my personal style." To learn more about Juju, visit her profile @jujubrenerofficial.

Meet Henry This month, we had the opportunity to sit down with a working Hollywood dog actor, Henry, and his mamager, Courtney M. Moore, who recently starred in a film together called The Furry Fortune, along with their co-star, Juju Brener. The Furry Fortune is based on a popular children’s book written by D. Good Morgan. The story centers around twins, Zoey and Dax, who are growing apart until they discover that their rescue dog, Henry, is shedding money. The movie is directed by Justin Ward and produced by Brad Wilson. "We got involved in The Furry Fortune by recommendation of a great friend of mine, Tad Griffith, who is an amazing horseman in the industry, as well as like family to me. They had contacted him, looking for a dog, and since he doesn’t have dogs, he recommended us for the role. We received a call from the producer, and the director, who wanted to come meet Henry. They came to our house for a quick meet and greet and to see all the amazing tricks that I taught Henry, and it was love at first sight! They loved all his tricks and his “look”. The filming took around 12 days, during the summer. Some days were very hot, but Henry had a wonderfully cool air-conditioned trailer to hang out in, and stay cool between takes. Sometimes he would let me in, to cool off, too. He really enjoyed being on set and seeing everyone everyday. It took a while, after the filming had ended, before he quit waking up at 6 am and running around, ready to go to work…..I believe he was sad when it ended." How did Henry become a working Hollywood actor?

54

"Henry is a very energetic, very lovable and extremely smart dog. I saw an audition for a small part for an online dog food company ad. I decided to submit Henry because he knows a lot of fun tricks, and he is a fast learner. He ended up getting the print job, and because he did so well, and loved it so much, I started submitting him on more projects. And, eventually people started calling us, asking for Henry. Henry has been featured in Purina ads, Petco ads and commercials, and several other dog food company commercials. He is also currently on the packaging of Hills Science diet dog food."

Henry has also modeled for smart glasses, dog supplements, and other pet products. But our favorite thing has been the opportunity to star as the money shedding pup in the film, The Furry Fortune. He’s been doing acting and modeling since that day, although it’s not his 9 to 5. Henry is a full time ranch dog, who spends most of his days with his horsey sister, Annabelle. He loves all the animals and running around the ranch. How did Henry come into your life? “Henry came into my life very unexpectedly! I found Henry at an animal shelter in LA, who was found wandering the streets, all alone. He was severely dehydrated and underweight. I was not looking for a dog, when I found him. I only happened to be at that shelter, at that particular moment, because it was my late’s dog birthday and I decided to put together some doggie gift baskets and drop them off at the shelter. When I saw Henry, he was at a solitary confinement, and even though I couldn’t interact with him, they let me take a photo. I went home that night and I kept hearing the name Henry and feeling that I had to go see this dog again. I went to see him the very next day, and the rest is history. I truly believe, to this day, that Penny sent Henry to heal my broken heart.” "What I love most about all this is how Henry is just a regular dog you see in a shelter. If his story could change just ONE person's mind to adopt rather than to buy a dog, then we have made a difference. There are so many amazing dogs just waiting for their forever home, and they don’t have to be a puppy. Henry was about 2 years old when I found him. He just needed love and some adjusting. I got so passionate about dog rescue mission that I have recently started a NON-Profit Animals Sanctuary with some good friends of mine, on their property, in Agua Dulce, CA. We currently have over 80 rescue animals on the property, including horses, cows, longhorns, pigs, ducks, mini donkeys, dogs and cats. The name of the sanctuary is called Hollywood Hoofbeats. You can find us on Instagram @annabelleandhenry, and our website www.Hollywoodhoofbeats.com for more information on volunteering, events and donations."

Turn Your Compassion into Action The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA®) was the first humane society to be established in North America and is, today, one of the largest in the world. Our organization was founded on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans and must be protected under the law. Headquartered in New York City, the ASPCA maintains a strong local presence, and with programs that extend our anti-cruelty mission across the country, we are recognized as a national animal welfare organization. We are a privately funded 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, and are proud to boast more than 2 million supporters across the country. The ASPCA’s mission is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.”

We Are Their Voice "Helping vulnerable animals and keeping pets in safe and loving homes requires a commitment from all of us—advocates, pet owners, shelters, leaders, and entire communities. When we work together under a common cause, we’re both saving lives and elevating our society and its laws to ensure cruelty victims and other at-risk animals receive the protection and care they deserve."
