Letter from the Editor Woof, and Welcome back to another issue of DOGUE! This month we celebrate LOVE & Fashion, in the most glamorous way possible. February is not only the season of love, it is also the season of fashion. It is the month of the Fashion Week, and the launch of Fall and Winter collections, in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. And, as our wardrobes change, so does our pup's! This month, we had the priviledge to do a Hollywood fashion shoot with two pawfessional runway models from San Diego, California: Skittle & Bitsy. Over lattes, we spoke with their mamager, Lorrie, to discuss the glamorous career of her Yorkie models, and their upcoming fashion shows, this year. In this issue, we learn about the History of the Dog Fashion, and feature a Master Pet Couturier, Anthony Rubio. We also feature a talented dog photographer, Mary Haber, and learn about her bigger mission. February is also a month of giving. On Feb 10th, we celebrate the Giving Hearts Day, on which we donate to our favorite charity. It is also the longest-running giving day in the United States. And, on Feb 16th, we celebrate Random Acts of Kindness. We wish everyone a beautiful Valentine's month, full of love, chocolate, and roses. And, lots, and lots, of puppy kisses, of course. Till next time, XOXO,

THE HISTORY OF DOG FASHION

30

Today, it is common to see dogs dressed up in full-on outfits; sporting designer wear and accessories. The modern dog has his own sunglasses, jackets, and foot wear. They have their own Christmas sweaters, Halloween costumes and skinny jeans. We may have come along away since the plain collar, but dog fashion is nothing new. In fact, it dates all the way back to ancient Egypt. If Cleopatra had a dog, it probably wore a gold collar, decorated with precious jewels.

Indeed, nobility and the upper class have been decorating their pups for centuries. The dog collar is the most universal canine accessory, and our dogs’ first fashion statement. These collars may have started as simple as a rope, but soon evolved into intricate works of art. In ancient Egypt, a common trend was to stamp leather collars with graphics depicting the scenes of a dog’s life.

The Dog Collar Museum at Leeds Castle, Kent Photo by Matthew Walker Photography / Leeds Castle

The Evolution of the Collar It was a way to personalize the collars, and demonstrate a distinct sense of style. One such collar belonged to an Egyptian nobleman by the name of Maiharpiri, in 1440 BC. It depicted hunting scenes embossed into leather, and the dog's name, Tantanuit, was visible on the collar.

These decorative collars were made of fine silk, leather, velvet and precious metals, and existed since the time of King Henry VII.

In ancient China, collars were bejeweled and up to trend. King Cuo of Zhongshan’s dog had a collar made of solid gold, with silver and turquoise accents. And, while it functioned as a collar, its appearance resembled more of a necklace.

In Rome, dogs were fitted with a suit of armor to match their Roman owners. Spike collars were also popular during that time. In Japan, dogs wore matching Samurai armor, inspired by the Samurai culture. In the Far East, fashion collars with bells were popular, which dated back to the Tang Dynasty. In the 1720’s a Japanese Emperor owned a dog, Mao Shih Tzu, that wore a gold and silver collar bearing bells, and earrings, with bells attached. The collar alerted the imperial servants to the Emperor’s movements as he moved around the palace. As trade with the far East opened up with the West, these collars with bells also became fashionable in Europe.

It was the royal courts of Europe that started the dog couture scene, with collars, necklaces and coats. Their dogs displayed stunning jewels, fabrics, and precious metals, as seen in various historical paintings. Many paintings and tapestries show dogs in jeweled collars that boasted of their masters’ wealth. The most famous dog fashionista, of the time, was “Cher Ami” the dog of King Louis XI. He wore a collar of scarlet velvet, with twenty pearls and eleven rubies.

The color of a collar was also an important mark of ownership. King Charles VIII’s household owned 24 pets and each wore a black velvet collar with four ermine paws dangling from them. The French King Charles IX owned 36 miniature Greyhounds and they wore red and green velvet collars. And, Mary Queen of Scots' dogs wore blue velvet collars. Marie Antoinette’s dogs wore diamond encrusted collars, but such extravagance vanished with the French Revolution and the pugs owned by Empress Josephine wore relatively simple collars decorated with Chinese bells.

The fascinating collection of canine neckwear displays more than 130 rare and valuable collars, and spans across five centuries. Most of the collars were generously donated to the Leeds Castle Foundation by Mrs. Gertrude Hunt, in memory of her husband, John, a distinguished Irish scholar. The collection included 62 collars from all corners of Europe, dating from the late 15th century to the early 20th century. Since Mrs. Hunt’s original donation, the museum’s collection has more than doubled in size. Each unique item has its own interesting story to tell, offering great insights into the changing culture, and fashion styles throughout the years.

Pug dogs introduced to Holland as a result of Dutch trade in the Far East, during the 16th century wore orange ribbons around their necks as a sign of the ascendancy of the House of Orange.

The earliest item in the dog collar collection dates back to the late 15th century, and features fearsome spikes, which would have been worn for protection against wolves and bears.

In 1720’s, a Russian ambassador gave the Chinese envoy a pair of Greyhounds, each wearing a yellow silk cord drawn through a small piece of wood, as a sign of it belonging to the Romanov court.

In the Tudor period (1485-1603) dogs were primarily used for herding livestock, hunting and brutal sports, such as wolf and bear-baiting. These collars were used to restrain and protect the dogs.

During the Renaissance, as dogs got domesticated, collars were fitted with padlocks, for protection, where only the owner had the key. These locks would be decorated and family specific, making them easy to identify, in case of theft. Collars with inscriptions became increasingly popular during that time.

After the Tudor period, the collars begin to look much less brutal and far more delicate. It wasn’t just the collars that changed in this time period, but also the dogs themselves. As the ownership of dogs became more widespread from the 18th century onwards, a plain brass circle with a rolled or serrated edge became the most common style of collar, often with an engraving of the name and location of the owner.

The Dog Collar Museum at Leeds Castle in Kent is home to the largest collection of dog collars in the world.

From Protective to Decorative Collars With the rise of the pet dog, collars became more decorative, and often featured inscriptions to distinguish them from the strays on the street. Many collars also included humorous descriptions. The museum has several examples of those, in their collection, which are engraved with a verse or a rhyme. One reads: "I am lost, return me to my master. I am to go without a log, I am Mr Millard’s dog. My brother was christn’d Prickly Dick and my name is Nimble, Come Quick." Such collars fashion set English poet who owned a of Bounce.

were following in the by Alexander Pope, an and essayist (1688-1744) Great Dane, by the name

The dog was much admired by the Prince of Wales, to whom Pope gave one of Bounce’s litters, wearing a collar bearing the inscription: "I am His Highness’ Dog at Kew; Pray tell me Sir, whose Dog are you?" There have always been personalised prestige collars for prized pets to reflect their owner’s power, wealth or sheer level of devotion, but the 20th century saw a much greater variety of canine collar fashions. Items on display, at the museum, hint at the range of new and cheaper materials in use, including plastic, wool, felt, beads and modern textiles, such as polyester.

The Evolution of Dog Fashion Dog collars underwent their most stylish transformation during the Middle Ages. Upper class women treated their dogs as fashion accessories; like a Chanel bag of Medieval Times, if you will. They began using more quality and luxurious materials for dog collars, including leather, iron, and gemstones. But, it was with the industrialization of Europe, when dog fashion really took off. Along with the mass produced items, we start seeing the first dog boutiques in Paris. One of the most transformative fashion players in the pet market was a renowned Parisian brand, Goyard. The brand was one of the first notable fashion companies to develop a pet range back in the late 19th century. After decades of original trunk making, Maison Goyard decided to develop a new concept.

Titled “Chic du Chien” the collection was created for the founder Robert Goyard’s French bulldog, and was received with great success. The premium canine accessory collection made Goyard the ultimate brand for dog fashion. The collection wasn't limited to leashes and collars; it also included velvet overcoats, glasses, boots, and ruffleneck collars. The famous slogan read: "The chicest dogs wear Goyard." One of the most popular items was the Hulot bag. Named after Rober's dog, the bag was designed to carry small-sized pets, and became a hit among stylish women. It also paved the way for future leather goods, and luxury brands to create fashion for dogs.

The Modern Dog Fashion Industry There was a huge burst in the dog fashion industry in the 21st century, and some argue that Paris Hilton had a lot to do with it. The famous hotel heiress and socialite would parade her Chihuahua, Tinkerbell, in fancy outfits, on and off the red carpet; that ranged from pink tutus, to diamond dog collars. Her fame was at its peak and the press couldn’t get enough of her, or Tinkerbell. Tinkerbell's fashion created a domino effect that led to people styling their own dogs, and soon, full wardrobes became the new standard. In London, department store Harrods began holding “pet-a-porter” fashion shows.

The New York Pet Fashion Show also grew in popularity, and from 2014 to 2020 a portion of the proceeds were donated to the Mayor’s Alliance of NYC for Animals. Sao Paulo Fashion Week also featured dogs. With the growth of ecommerce, fashion companies began hopping on the dog fashion train. Some well known designers such as Alexander Wang started designing outfits for dogs. Today, brands like Versace, Louis Vuitton, Moschino, Burberry, Supreme, Tiffany, and Ralph Lauren offer designer pet collections.

From Street Fashion to Runway Dog fashion shows have become increasingly popular, around the globe. During the Fashion Week, brands like Mulberry and Jean Paul Gaultier share the catwalk with Anthony Rubio, a celebrity Pet Couturier from New York. Anthony’s Canine Couture is handcrafted by the designer, using the finest materials, including semi-precious stones and other colorful details, to produce one-of-a-kind pieces. Modern dog fashion now includes casual wear, and haute couture; anything from hair clips and sunglasses to baseball caps, and shoes. According to Million Insights, the global dog clothing and accessories market is projected to reach 16.61 billion dollars by 2028.

But, if history has taught us anything it's that dog fashion is nothing new. For thousands of years, we have been accessorizing our pups, and making sure that they're stylish, and fashion furward! So, the next time that someone accuses your dog for being a little too boujee, you can tell them that he's just keeping up with his ancestors.

Anthony Rubio: The Master Pet Couturier As a pioneer in the pet couture world, Anthony was among the first to bring dog fashion to the runway, which has earned him the title of the Master Pet Couturier. Indeed, it would be unfair to speak of modern dog fashion, without mentioning Rubio. But, who is Anthony Rubio, and what is his story, exactly? We reached out to Rubio's team to learn more, and this is what we've discovered. Born and raised in New York City, of Puerto Rican descent, Anthony Rubio studied fashion at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. After rescuing a Chihuahua, by the name of Bandit, in 2002, he started designing outfits for him. And, by 2003, Bandit Rubio designs was established. After Bandit passed away, the company's name was changed to Anthony Rubio Designs. Rubio has done full production runway shows since 2008. And, in 2012, he became the first pet fashion designer to showcase at the New York Fashion Week. Since then, he has presented twice a year. Rubio's creations are all couture and considered collectible art, by many. His designs are inspired by everything— from movies and fairy tales, to the best of women’s haute couture.

38

“His masterpieces are born from an almost maniacal obsession to achieve perfection stemming from hours of sketching, and innovating new shapes and forms. Then, they're meticulously executed, and completed only when Rubio is completely satisfied with the final product.” As an advocate for pet adoption, Rubio created “Adopt Me Maybe?” pet campaign, in an an effort to promote shelter pet adoption. Bogie and Kimba, his pups, and muses, were the poster boys for the campaign. Rubio is also on the boards of several fundraising organizations, and was recently honored, and awarded, by The Humane Society, for his humanitarian efforts in championing animal adoption. Love & They say, if you want "true love" get a puppy, and that's exactly what Lorrie did: twice! Skittle and Bitsy are not only Lorrie's true loves, they're also her fashion models. She loves dressing them up in glamorous gowns, and casual street wear, and taking them for strolls around the city. Dog fashion may have started as a hobby, for Lorrie, but it became her lifestyle. "Their signature fashion statement is their hair bows, which are custom designed by Pawz Hoodies. We don’t leave the house without those! ... After seeing how many photos I take of my girls, my son in law set us up with an Instagram account, and the rest is history!" explains Lorrie, the mamager of the two Yorkie models from San Diego. With over 38,000 followers, Lorrie's fur babies are not only fashionistas, and influencers, they are also pawfessional runway models! The girls have been featured on TV, on several occasions, including Channel 8, Fox 5 and DogTV. They have also been featured in three books, including Anthony Rubio's Canine Couture, Hooray for Pollywood by Jessy Dodd, and Superpower Dogs by Halo. Skittle is eleven, and Betsy is three, and the girls have no plans of slowing down! This duo's runway career kicked off in 2016, when they auditioned for Rubio's Fashion show. "Anthony Rubio is a designer of canine couture, form NYC, and he’s just fabulous and so incredible. He was interviewing for runway models and we were fortunate enough to get selected. We’ve done every one of his shows at LAFW, ever since. It’s such an honor!"

42

Fashion And, LA Fashion week is where we met the famous duo, backstage, at one of the shows. Skittle has done about nine shows, so far, and Bitsy has done three. "All the Fashion Shows are exciting but we had the most fun at a show that Rubio did for the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce to celebrate the Year of the Dog, in 2018. It was spectacular!" The girls are now getting ready for their upcoming Rubio show in March, which opens on March 19th, 2022, and we just can't wait to see them back in action! Lorrie is a big fan of Yorkies. She's had five, thus far. “I choose Yorkies because they are hypoallergenic, and they don’t shed. I also love small dogs. They're much easier to dress!” But, Lorrie's dog love goes well beyond her own pups, which is made apparent by how active she is in the community. As one of the Directors of the United Paws Group, she helps organize fundraisers for pets in need, to get them fostered and adopted. In addition to her work at the United Paws Group, Lorrie also supports four local rescue groups, including the ASPCA, Little Red Dog in Orange County, the Vanderpump Dog Foundation, and Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego. Breed Highlight: Yorki 80

The Terrier Family Historically, Terriers were bred to dig and hunt for prey like foxes, moles, badgers, and rodents. Their name originates in the Latin word "terra" and means "earth" – although some people joke that the word terrier actually comes from the word "terror"! There are many different shapes and sizes in the Terrier family breed, but they all share a feisty, mischievous, and energetic nature. Terriers are also highly intelligent and trainable. There are at least 19 types of Terriers including: Cairn Terrier, Fox Terrier, Irish Terrier, Border Terrier, Boston Terrier, Bull Terrier, Airedale Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Australian Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier, Miniature Bull Terrier, Miniature Fox Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Welsh Terrier, West Highland Terrier, Pitbull Terrier, Scottish Terrier, Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier, and Yorkshire Terrier. Yorkies are the smallest of the breed, named after its place of origin in Yorkshire, England. They’re toy-sized Terriers, averaging between 4 to 7 lbs in weight, and 8 to 9 inches in height. They're also known for their long, beautiful and silky, hypoallergenic coat.

BREED OVERVIEW GROUP: Toy HEIGHT: 8 to 9 inches WEIGHT: 4 to 7 pounds COAT: Silky, straight, floor-length COLOR: gold, tan, black, blue & parti LIFE EXPECTANCY: 13 to 16 years OTHER: Hypoallergenic

The History of the Famous Terriers

Credits to Courtesy of the AKC Library and Archives

Yorkies were initially bred in the Northern England counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire. Scottish textile mill workers brought many types of Scottish terriers with them, when they moved to England for work, according to the YTCA. They bred these little Scots with extinct English terriers to create what is now known as the Yorkshire Terrier. In the past, Yorkies were bred to be tough little rodent hunters. It was a far cry from the glamorous apartment lives they live now. For years, they were toiled away in textile mills and coal mines next to their blue-collar owners, according to the American Kennel Club. Yorkshire Terriers experienced a major life upgrade when Victorian women began adopting them as lap dogs. From the dusty floors of factory life, these little pups were transformed into fashionable fur babies and never looked back. Today, Yorkies are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. Yorkies were first seen in America in the 1870s, and the AKC recorded its first Yorkie, a female named Belle, in 1885. The breed became officially recognized in 1886 in England.

Yorkies are also one of the most famous dog breeds. Historians have pointed out that drawings from the first edition of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz features Toto as a Yorkie, although, in the movie version, it was depicted by a Cairn Terrier. The Yorkshire Terrier also became a famous hero during the World War II, when an American soldier found Smoky, in a foxhole in Papua New Guinea. Smoky then went on to save lives, during the war, by helping transport a communications cable through a small drainage culvert. She also visited soldiers in hospitals and went on to be known as the very first therapy dog in history. Smoky's owner, William A. Wynne, even wrote a book chronicling her many adventures called Yorkie Doodle Dandy. There is also a memorial dedicated to Smoky's honor, in Cleveland. Famous Yorkie owners include President Nixon's family, Audrey Hepburn, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Missy Elliott, Kirsten Dunst, Natalie Portman, and Simon Cowell, just to name a few.
