CRUMPETS PSYCHEDELIC PORN CRUMPETS HAVE IGNITED THEIR NEWEST ALBUM, SHYGA! THE SUNLIGHT MOUND. IT’S A NATURAL EVOLUTION, YET AN EXCITING LOOK AHEAD, TO THE WEIRD AND WONDERFUL SOUNDSCAPES JACK MCEWAN AND THE BAND HAVE BEEN PLAYING DURING THEIR TIME OFF ROAD. Fourteen tracks strong, SHYGA! is intense in its delivery, a trademark of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. However, the songwriting and arrangement presents the band’s most refined and dynamic collection yet. It’s even landed them the coveted spot as Triple J’s feature album. Featuring previously released singles ‘Mundungus’, ‘Mr. Prism!’, ‘Tally-Ho’ and ‘Pukebox’, the album is full of twists and turns. Written during an extended period of time off road, the band’s frontman and songwriter Jack McEwan found himself going back to the drawing board when it came to sonic inspiration. “I wanted to evolve on a sound that’s always felt playful and inviting. An upbeat mixture of fuzz tones and harmonies that nod towards The Beatles, but punch more like early Kings of Leon and Nirvana. The album is a fast paced, high intensity record that journeys from warped acoustics, haunting strings,

warm Melotron, to heavy guitar riffs that venture through a plethora of styles and forms. It allows the listener to breathe and treat the album as a whole piece. “Hopefully the album translates well to the listener as I feel it’s the work I’m most proud of, dynamically and production wise. The title reflects the madness, crazy midweek adventures, highs and physical lows of touring and I feel like it encompasses a sense of euphoria to say, SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound,” says Jack. Creativity and production hasn’t stopped the band for 2021. Despite much of this year’s tour plans being put on pause, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have used their time off road to continue preparing themselves for an eventual blistering return to stages around the world with a heavy-hitter of an album primed for the live space. SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound is out now. •

TILD PUTTING 2020 IN THE REARVIEW, SYDNEY’S TILD RETURN WITH NEW MUSIC FOR A NEW YEAR IN THE FITTINGLY TITLED ‘CHANGE’. The band has become favourites on the Sydney scene for their tight grasp on grunge and rock sounds. They’ve delved deeper on their new track; fusing ‘90s melancholic grunge with fresh alt-rock attitudes. Teaming up once more with Lachlan Mitchell from The Vines and The Jezabels, the band laid the track down at Sydney’s Parliament Studios. Driven by tight vocals and strong production of well-paced and arranged guitars and rhythms, ‘Change’ is TILD at their finest. A song about resistance to development and change and the negative effects on one’s mental health and life as a result, ‘Change’ breathes new energy and edge into TILD’s growing catalogue. “The writing of this song was one of the easiest yet. It’s really exciting to have a track come together so quickly. Musically, the song went to another level in the studio. Lachlan Mitchell had us messing around with different feedback and undertones. We created a whole track of noise and feedback that play subtly underneath the whole track which we felt gave it an extra edge.” said TILD. Since their debut in 2019, TILD have been consistently building their sonic identity and crisp dynamic on the live front, supporting the likes of British India and The Dead Love early on in their career. Such opportunities have laid the foundations for TILD to build upon their headliner quality in the music fans since
Already drawing rave reviews from the likes of Uncut, Mojo, Loud and Quiet and more, Glowing in the Dark has a running theme of escape. Escape from despair, from constraints, from small town life, and even, in dreams, from the Earth, as on the propulsive title track.
early releases such as ‘Slowly’ and ‘Wolf’. TILD have proven they were just getting started. 2020 saw the band release ‘Make Up’ and ‘Wasting Time’, bringing TILD to more attention and now with ‘Change’, they’re set to embrace their next phase. •

DJANGO DJANGO OVER THE COURSE OF THEIR EXTRAORDINARILY ACCOMPLISHED DISCOGRAPHY TO DATE, DJANGO DJANGO HAVE CONSTANTLY HEADED LEFT WHERE OTHERS HAVE GONE RIGHT. RECENTLY DESCRIBED AS “MAKING MUSIC THAT SOUNDS CLOSE TO PERFECTION,” THEY ARE KNOWN FOR THEIR GENRE DEFYING ECLECTIC SOUND. THEIR NEW ALBUM “GLOWING IN THE DARK” HERALDS THE BEGINNING OF A THRILLING NEW ERA FOR THE BAND.
The miniature road movie “Waking Up” meanwhile, with its hints of T Rex and Serge Gainsbourg’s “Bonnie and Clyde” might be mainly acoustic and softly sung, but it rockets along with breathless anticipation, the addition of Gainsbourg’s daughter Charlotte on vocals adding extra glamour, and “Free From Gravity” might be the most complete expression of the band’s influences coming together. With beautiful cascading bleep melodies and strings wrapping around the funkiest stop-start drum machine and a relentlessly infectious bassline, they perfectly embody the bittersweet theme of yearning to “escape everything that’s weighing you down.” It’s a glorious move forward, infused with the kind of freshness and confidence that comes hand in hand with a newfound optimism. Glowing in the Dark is a record about escape but also one full of hope, and that’s the sound of experience, because this is a band who knows what it takes to exceed even your wildest dreams. Glowing in the Dark is out now. •

LANSTAN
IN 2017, LANSTAN HAS CEMENTED HIMSELF AS ONE OF THE CRUCIAL VOICES IN AUSTRALIAN HIP HOP. OFFERING INTROSPECTIVE SONGWRITING FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A YOUNG MAN STRIVING FOR SUCCESS, TODAY HE RELEASES HIS SOPHOMORE EP, ‘VISION’. Lanstan’s main goal is to help elevate the hip-hop scene on the Northern Beaches and connect with the youth. It’s a mission that was forged in his acclaimed releases ‘Dream State’, produced by Kuren and ‘Go To Sleep’ on his debut EP ‘Dreams’. Lanstan wrote the songs on the new EP with the intention of being able to perform them with maximum energy. “Vision is me sharing my goals and ambitions as well as my fears and insecurities. It’s my most direct and vulnerable explanation of my Vision as an artist. I wanted every song to strike a different tone but all surround the same theme. It’s very important to me that by the end of the project, you know me better as an artist. Whether I’m singing, rapping or shouting, there’s something for every fan of hip-hop music on there,” explains Lanstan. The Vision EP was crafted in collaboration with Max Muller (Muller Made), Tom Garnett, Joseph Colmenero, Ollie Roland, Steven Petridis (Espa) and recording engineer Daniel Natoli. “This EP has been a long time in the making and has been some of the best times of my life. With the help of an amazing team around me, I have smashed some of my biggest goals in music and continued in an upward trajectory.“ •

NORTH CURL CURL NIPPERS
THE JUNIOR STATE TITLES FOR 2021 LOOKED VASTLY DIFFERENT TO THOSE HELD IN 2020, BUT THAT DIDN’T CHANGE THE RESULT. IN ANOTHER DOMINANT TEAM DISPLAY, NORTH CURL CURL NIPPERS RETAINED THE NSW STATE TITLE BY AN IMPRESSIVE MARGIN.
The next generation of NCC Nippers showed they have the heart and the determination to represent their club in the years ahead.
Despite the disruptions to the 2021 season due to COVID restrictions, North Curly once again sent a well prepared and highly motivated group of kids north to defend their title.
Friday was Team day for the U9s-11s and with improving surf conditions, we saw just where NCC’s strength lies. Across the age groups, points started accumulating as the Green and Gold continually crossed the line in point scoring positions.
While NCC arrived with a reputation for an immensely strong water team, this year saw the emergence of a competitive Beach and R&R team as well, coached and managed by Mike Girvan, Sophie McGovern, Justine Hayward-Smith and Rhonda Lycett.
social
This presence allowed NCCs U9s-11s to build the points score in and out of the water on Days 1 and 2, under the watchful and occasionally teary eye of their coach, Andrew ‘Dinky’ Dennehy. In some of the most challenging surf conditions seen at Swansea at State, Thursday provided thrills, spills, tears and laughter for the NCC Young Guns as they took on powerful surf that would’ve tested the most experienced of Open competitors. There were incredible performances from the brave group of NCC U9s, where it was a badge of honour just to get out and around the cans.
14
Across the 10s and 11s, the gold rush began for NCC and that would continue throughout the 4 days of competition.
With the Juniors having set the tone, it was time for the Senior Nippers to follow their lead on Saturday and Sunday…and boy did they deliver. With some outstanding performances in the individual events, NCC went into the lead in early competition on Saturday morning and were never headed.
and alongside their team mates, the overall point score victory was settled. Our director of Surf Sports, Glenn Slater is fond of saying ‘Everyone is a someone at North Curly’ and this has never been more evident in 2020/1, as so many people played a role in bringing the title back to NCC; from behind the scenes organisation, to age managers, water safety, officials, kit organisers, trailer pullers, tent erectors, parents getting the kids to training and of course, the coaches. Without this huge team of people working together, these champion kids couldn’t do what they did. But the last words go to “Clusey”: “Our whole club culture is about the kids enjoying themselves. If they enjoy it, they’ll stay in the club and that makes our whole community much better. Medals are just a bonus.” But what a bonus…Bring on 2022. •
Izzy Higgs secured her first State individual medal, securing bronze in the Board, against a stellar field of NSW competitors. NCC Head Coach, Michael ‘Clusey’ Clues summed up what it meant when he said, “To see that smile and see her parents in tears, that’s everything to me”. Dominant duo, Olivia Clues and Dominique Melbourn completed a clean sweep from U11 to U14s in the Board Rescue It was an outstanding performance from these NCC stalwarts

With the vaccination rollout now in progress, focus will turn to how the Federal government manages its implementation. There has already been a couple of missteps and the Prime Minister will want to ensure everything goes as smooth as possible. He is being rewarded personally in the polls for his handling of the COVID crisis, but this isn’t being translated into a lead for the Coalition, with Newspoll showing a 50/50 tie between them and the Labor party. The NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, just seems to keep rolling on. Her handling of the Coronavirus is seen by many as the way forward. Not impulsively closing borders, but shutting down hotspots has worked well for most people in the state. However, businesses on the Northern Beaches may disagree; not necessarily with the lockdown, but with some sort of assistance package especially as the lockdown occurred at the busiest time over Christmas and New Year. Governments can be excused for not being perfect in March 2020, but the state government was well prepared and knew exactly how businesses would be affected by shutting them down. Assistance could have been forthcoming almost immediately, only now are we seeing the rollout of the Dine and Discover voucher program and this won’t cover all businesses, no where near it. No one I know is asking for a handout. Far from it. Help with rent, electricity and a targeted implementation of JobKeeper, only for the lockdown period, are some ideas. Nearly all the business owners I speak to feel forgotten about. With the end of JobKeeper and the reduction to JobSeeker, all businesses are waiting to see what happens next.
RIP CURL NARRABEEN CLASSIC PRESENTED BY CORONA. The WSL is excited to have the Championship Tour come back to Australia this April. The CT tour will see the best surfers in the world competing at four Australian locations including our very own at Narrabeen Beach. Over eleven days, 38 men and 18 women will compete in the Narrabeen event. The likes of Kelly Slater, as well as reigning World Champ Italo Ferreira and two-time Champ Gabriel Medina will be in the men’s mix. John John Florence, Julian Wilson, Mikey and Owen Wright are just a few, also competing in the mens division.
Followed by winter, this could spell the end for many Northern Beaches businesses. A $2000 up to $5000 grant is being discussed, but it’s still a way off. Too late to save some.
Aussie Sally Fitzgibbons and Tyler Wright will be competing against Brazil’s Tatiana Weston-Webb and America’s Lakey ey Peterson. Pe

At the time of writing, there is the beginnings of a new problem for the PM and the entire parliament. Accusations of sexual harassment and even rape in the building are being reported in the press. Obviously this a societal issue, but we will be watching closely to see how our ‘leaders’ set an example for the rest of us on how to solve this ongoing crisis.

JAMES GRIFFIN WITH BETHANY HAMILTON
The event itself was a great experience for locals and visitors coming to Manly to watch the surfing and enjoy the area. Our beaches enjoyed casual onlookers as well as people traveling to watch a nail biting finish. Australian Matt Banting was only just beaten by less than 0.14 points. We were all completely unaware that this would be the last occasion many of us could gather and celebrate in such numbers again.

THE WSL SYDNEY SURF PRO, HOSTED IN MANLY, WAS ONE OF THE LAST MAJOR SPORTING EVENTS IN AUSTRALIA BEFORE COVID-19 HEALTH RESTRICTIONS CAME INTO AFFECT. AFTER THAT, WEEKEND PUBLIC SPORTS EVENTS COULD NO LONGER ACCOMMODATE CROWDS AND THE BUSINESS THAT FOLLOWED DRIED UP FOR OUR CAFES, RESTAURANTS AND HOTELS.
It is only fitting then that as we carefully roll back restrictions with over a month of no community transmission in NSW and vaccines being rolled out, that the first major events returning to the Northern Beaches will be the World Surfing League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) in Narrabeen. Announced in February, I joined Member for Pittwater Rob Stokes to announce that NSW was going to be the new home for the CT as WSL looked to secure its surfing calendar for 2021. The Rip Curl Narrabeen Classic will make its way to the Northern Beaches from April 16-26, bringing competitors and spectators to our beaches, hotels and cafes.
be b been eeen een n
The timing could not be better as the beaches rebuilds from the summer close down and the NSW Government invests back in the area through the Dine and Discover $25 voucher program. It is not just about bringing the surfing to Narrabeen, but the business and the confidence that will follow with it. The beaches made hard sacrifices in response to the outbreak in December and after responding quickly and effectively, we now have the opportunity to reap the benefits. It’s our job to open up Manly and welcome visitors from across Australia, encouraging them to dine and stay here while the surfing is on in Narrabeen. In Manly, we have so much to give from our beautiful natural environment to the diversity of entertainment and experiences on offer. I think we are all looking forward to new beginnings this year as we move past the adversity of 2020. I am anticipating a year where Manly can emerge stronger and offer more to the local traveller coming to Sydney. • JAMES GRIFFIN, MP FOR MANLY

Mr Falinski said the Federal Government had launched a $5 million campaign across national advertising, TV and event sponsorships to encourage Australians to book a holiday in Australia this year.
YOU CAN’T TRAVEL THE WORLD, BUT WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO? THE NORTHERN BEACHES OF SYDNEY CAN OFFER IT ALL. JASON FALINSKI, MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT, MEMBER FOR MACKELLAR IS KEEN TO BOOST TOURISM IN HIS COMMUNITY.
“Holiday here this year, the Northern Beaches will welcome you with open arms,” Jason Falinski has said. His call to boost tourism on the Northern Beaches comes as an advertising blitz to promote domestic holidays supporting local tourism jobs and businesses.
18
“The campaign will feature Australian destinations, tourism products and experiences from every state and territory in national advertising, TV program and event sponsorships, publisher created content and inprogram editorial integration,” Mr Falinski said.
“I am encouraging the good people of New South Wales and Australia to come to the Northern Beaches!” Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Dan Tehan said the Coalition Government was working with the tourism sector on a post-JobKeeper plan. “Since becoming Minister in December, I have been in regular contact with all levels of the tourism sector. We are listening to them and collecting data
to inform our decision on what happens post-JobKeeper. “The advertising blitz will help drive Australians to book domestic holidays and give our tourism industry a much-needed boost. It’s part of Tourism Australia’s ‘Holiday Here This Year’ campaign for 2021.
“Our tourism industry is so important because it supports more than 666,000 local jobs and every dollar spent on an Australian holiday this year will help our tourism sector. “When you do book your holiday this year, go to one of the Northern Beaches local travel agents to help support them because they’re also doing it tough due to COVID-19.” •

FROM ENTREPRENEURS AND ARTISANS, TO MANUFACTURING, MAKER SPACES, DISTILLERIES, BREWERIES AND FASHION STORES, BROOKVALE IS FAST BECOMING THE PLACE TO BE. TALENT, EXPERIENCE AND NEW IDEAS ARE PAVING THE WAY FOR SUCCESS, TOGETHER WITH COLLABORATION AND CREATIVITY. COVERED HIT THE STREETS AND CAUGHT UP WITH A TRIBE OF LOCAL BUSINESSES TO DISCOVER WHAT ALL THE BUZZ IS ABOUT.
There has always been something unique about the industrial blocks of Brookvale. The first development came about in 1836 when 64 hectares of farmland was granted to William Frederick Parker. In 1883, Sydney Alexander Malcolm built ‘Brookvale House’ and in 1961 sold it to the Hooker Investment Corporation for what would later become Warringah Mall. Brookvale has had many lives. After World War II, a large number of Italian immigrants bought land there giving it
the nickname, Pazzaniedu, meaning Little Pazzano (a small village of southern Italy). Over the years, manufacturing and warehousing blossomed followed by commercial office spaces. Now, in 2021, the streets of Brookvale, especially between Harbord and Pittwater roads, are a hub of innovation and thriving businesses. Upstate Commercial Licensee, Vincent West, is excited about what’s to come. “Great things have been happening in Brookvale over the past few years and we’re going to see more growth if the Brookvale Masterplan goes ahead,” says the local Real Estate Director.
“Yay! I had a dream for 10 years to see the area as an art district, back when I had a studio there. I was the only one interested back then. Not anymore. So many artists in the area. Would love to see it finally happen,” says one of their followers @lauriemckern.
In 2017, Northern Beaches Council announced the Brookvale Masterplan, with a view to develop the area for long-term employment growth, mixeduse development including offices, retail, services and housing, improved walking and cycling connections and a bus rapid transit corridor.
Speaking of art, world famous Manchester artist and painter, Sophie Tea, who famously shares and sells her artwork online and has over 174,000 followers, recently secured a warehouse in Cross Street.
“Brookvale will really come to life over the next five years. It’s going to remain primarily commercial and industrial but the corridor will change down Pittwater Road. The high street will return with a unique Northern Beaches twist,” adds Vincent. “I expect we’ll see a lot of organic growth and once people outside the Beaches start coming, Brookvale will become a destination.”
A B.A.D SCENE If you’re lucky enough to score a warehouse, office or work space in the zone, you’ll have daily access to inspiring conversations, collaboration and a world of creativity.

B.A.D - Brookvale Arts District - is a collaborative initiative that launched last year by La Crème Creative Inc. La Crème’s mission is to connect artists, entrepreneurs, makers, small businesses and freelancers in a creative, casual and fun environment that nurtures synergy and collaboration. Follow them, @brookvaleartsdistrict, on Instagram and you’ll quickly get a sense of what’s coming.
“It’s been wonderful to watch the art scene come to life over the past few years,” says Vincent.
“It’s almost 1000 square metres and she’s setting it up as an art studio,” says Vincent.
With backstreets and alleyways boasting everything from hardware and general stores to mechanics, paint shops, surf stores, online retail, gyms, yoga and art studios, co-working spaces, coffee shops and eateries, half a dozen popular breweries and a brand new nonalcohol superstore, there really isn’t anything Brookvale can’t handle. So, forget putting the Inner West on your to-do list this weekend, or making the trip to Marrickville for a different vibe. If you’re driving by Brookie, stop in and say hi, grab a craft beer, soak up the atmosphere and support your local businesses. We look forward to seeing you here. •

100% FUN I walked into a store and asked for a natural deodorant. The shop assistant looked at me like I was crazy. That’s when I launched Nourished Life - to help other women find what I was looking for.”
CLONTARF MUM-OF-FOUR, IRENE FALCONE, LAUNCHED NOURISHED LIFE, AN ONLINE BUSINESS CURATING THE BEST TOXIC-FREE, NATURAL SKINCARE AND BEAUTY PRODUCTS IN 2012. FIVE YEARS LATER SHE SOLD IT FOR $20 MILLION. NOW, THE SOCIAL MEDIA SAVVY, MARKETING QUEEN IS SUPER EXCITED TO BUILD A BRAND NEW TRIBE WITH HER BROOKVALEBASED, NON-ALCOHOLIC SUPERSTORE, SANS DRINKS. AND IT’S GOING TO BE FUN!
Irene Falcone is a bundle of energy, the type of energy that’s highly contagious. She also has a way with words and when she shares them in her videos on social media, everybody listens. “I’m the biggest fan of online retail,” she cheers enthusiastically. “I love to talk to people through social media and get products in their hands as soon as possible at the best price.” Irene’s entrepreneurial journey began in 2011 when she started the search for toxic-free beauty products. “I wanted to get healthy,” she explains. “I had a lot of fatigue and gut health issues and decided to take a closer look at my products. I’ll never forget the day
24
While she still works at Nourished Life one day a week, it was another a-ha moment, this time shopping for alcohol-free wine, that led Irene to her next big business. “I went into a bottle shop to get some non-alcoholic beer and wine, and they looked at me the same way the lady looked at me 10 years ago when I asked for natural deodorant. A look that screamed, ‘Why would you do that?’” That was all Irene needed to launch Sans Drinks, a non-alcoholic superstore in Powells Road, Brookvale, stocking 0% alcohol free champagne, wine, spirits, beer and more. “I love distrupting an industry,” she admits with a laugh. “Now I have that catchphrase, ‘What’s the point?’ on our Sans Drinks delivery boxes.”
MINDFUL DRINKING Just like Nourished Life, Irene started Sans Drinks at home. “After two weeks working out of my garage, I realised that was a bit silly,” she laughs. “I love being in Brookvale. I’m surrounded by breweries and there’s a non-alcohol distillery here now too. There is an incredible vibe and community feel. I’m in my element.”

ARMSTRONG DRINKS
Irene is committed to sourcing the best non-alcholic drinks from around the world and her warehouse is open for tastings. “I’m trying hundreds of wines every month and I stock the good stuff we’re a superstore not a boutique,” she says proudly. While her customers are varied, Irene admits there are two groups she talks to a lot. “I meet women like me in their late 30s to 50s who have had enough of drinking. They used to have a glass every night, but they want to fit into their jeans. If you take out the alcohol, you take out the calories. “Then I meet men in their 60s, 70s and 80s whose doctors have said they can’t drink because they have health or liver issues. They’re the hardest to look after because they’re not happy. It’s not their decision - it’s doctor’s orders. They miss drinking beer, gin or scotch. I do private tastings with them. It takes time but they leave here very happy.” Irene is on a mission to promote mindful drinking and normalise non-alcoholic booze so people can drink and still feel sexy and cool. “It’s good for you,” she says. “I’m trying to get people to enjoy the taste of wine and beer without the alcohol. Plus, the death toll on roads from drinking is through the roof. Something like 30% of people who drink still get behind the wheel,” she says.
IRENE FALCONE, CEO AND FOUNDER, SANS DRINKS
Irene isn’t expecting everyone to go cold turkey but does think there’s a place for everyone to cut down. “It’s not about stopping altogether, it’s about having both,” she explains. “Have a night off. If you’re drinking more have two or three alcohol-free days a week.” Pretty bottles and the perfect bubbles aside, customer service is paramount for this business tycoon.
“Everything is packed and prepared in our warehouse. I put my personal phone number on every delivery box so if there are any issues, I get the call. I will always stop what I’m doing and repack an order.” With a perfect bottle of $10 Pinot Grigio from Eden Vale, to a $14.95 bottle of Rose and a high-end 0% sparkling for $29.95, Sans Drinks has something for everyone. And Irene is confident she’ll have

as much success with this bsiness as she did with her last. “I started Nourished Life with $100 and sold it for $20 million. I have the blue print for this kind of business.” •

COME AS YOU ARE The Rise of Brookvale
A fashion movement of body positivity, with purpose at its core.
EVERY BODY SHOULD HAVE ACCESS TO WONDERFULLY-MADE PIECES THAT FIT AND FEEL GOOD. IT’S SIMPLE REALLY. THANKFULLY WOMEN LIKE MANLY MUM, SOPHIE HENDERSON-SMART, ARE MAKING THIS IDEA A REALITY WITH HER SWIMWEAR BRAND, SAINT SOMEBODY. Sophie Henderson-Smart searched the globe for a beautiful quality, on-trend swimsuit made with her average size 16 shape in mind. “Nothing. How crazy is that? I thought. Imagine being the most common size and yet, the least catered for. How many other women face the same problem?” In 2017, after taking a career break to look after her two boys, Sophie decided to turn her biggest frustration into her greatest adventure. “I thought if no one else is doing it, it looks like it’s going to be me,” she smiles. Sophie decided to do something no other brands were doing, to focus on the average size woman. Her ideal customer is a size 12-22 who values quality and wants to feel amazing in a swimsuit.
“To be able to gift a woman confidence is a truly rewarding thing.” Creating a business for good was always the plan for Sophie. “I grew up with a mother in education and a father in medicine and I was always in awe of their achievements. They dedicated their lives to making the world better. I wanted to follow in their footsteps and create a business with purpose,” says Sophie. SAINT SOMEBODY has also partnered with Buy 1 Give 1 initiative and every sale helps a person in need. Although simple to the eye, SAINT SOMEBODY pieces are complex in structure to ensure the best fit and support for a wide range of bust sizes. “Every piece is hand finished in small batches. This is slow, mindful fashion,” Sophie explains.
“There is a lot of collaboration and support around here. Conversations in the laneways and cafés. People are business focused and community minded. The creative vibe in the air is good for me,” says Sophie. The business continues to grow at pace with the dream of making SAINT SOMEBODY the go-to brand for women size 12-22. “Global domination has been the plan from day one.” Sophie laughs. “The key for me is to remain focused on our brand values, while pushing to new heights in terms of design and fabrics. Slow and steady. I truly believe the best is yet to come.” •
Turns out you don’t need a fashion degree to have your own label. “I come up with all the design ideas myself. I have spent years dreaming about the swimwear I would love to wear but could never buy.” Sophie then calls upon her technical team to turn these ideas into the real thing. In 2019, the brand launched into the US market with a base in California. It quickly gained praise as one of the top swimsuit brands out of Australia. “Last year we launched online with Neiman Marcus and one of our swimsuits was featured in Sports Illustrated. These are surreal moments,” Sophie remarks. When it comes to finding her creative streak she looks to her community. “Brookvale is a wonderful place to be. My warehouse is next door to La Creme Creative Inc., the co-working space housing some talented creatives.

The Buzz
of the e-Bike
EIGHTEEN MONTHS AGO, WEST ASHTON RODE AN ELECTRIC BIKE FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME. THE MEMORY OF BEING ON A DRAGSTER AT SIX IGNITED SOMETHING IN HIM HE COULDN’T IGNORE. NOW, THE NORTH MANLY LOCAL HAS OPENED ENERGY ELECTRIC BIKES IN BROOKVALE, AND HIS CRUISIN’ COMMUNITY HAS ARRIVED.
West Ashton was getting his daily coffee fix at Fuel Espresso Bar in Brookvale, when the universe sent him a sign. It read, ‘For lease.’ “I used to come to Fuel every morning on my way to work,” the Channel 7 cameraman tells COVERED. “One day the shop next door to Fuel came up for lease and I thought, I’m going to give this a try. If something gets in the way, I’ll stop, but if not, I’m going to find affordable electric bikes and give people a chance to experience the same buzz I did the first time I rode one.” Like many of us, West’s passion for bike riding started as a kid. “I grew up in Perth and got a Dragster when I was six years old. I had that bike until I was 17. I rode it everywhere and spent hours fixing it, changing it, altering it,” he recalls. When West moved to Sydney in 1995,
he avoided investing in two wheels because of the hills. Little did he know an e-Bike would change all that. “A year and a half ago, I rode an e-Bike for the first time and I felt like a 15-yearold kid,” he laughs. “I had this unlimited power and energy and after that, I became obsessed with buying one.” As is often the case with entrepreneurs, West went on the hunt for his new bike only to discover a contemporary industry that was lacking something special. “I started shopping and two things happened,” he explains. “One, the customer service was terrible. And two, all the e-Bikes I found were $5,000! That’s when I thought, I could do so much better. I could find bikes that are affordable and get people really excited like I was.”

“I’ve lent my bike to a customer at the moment because his has a fault. Lots of customers ride past and say hi - I often run out with my tool kit and throw my allen key across the bikes. I’m invested in every bike and customer that leaves my store.”
SAFE AND SOUND In October 2020 West opened the doors to Energy Electric Bikes and he’s pumped to have found his commercial home in Brookvale, right next door to his favourite coffee shop. “I love this part of Brookvale. I love the factories and I feel at home here - it’s like my backyard. The area is changing all the time. When I knock off work and ride home, there are people hanging out, visiting the breweries. Sunday at 11am is Yum Cha so there are always families about. “The shop is also next door to a carpark, between Chard and Winbourne Road, so I can stand at the door and watch people safely test ride my bikes. I feel like a dad. I’m always saying, ‘Please be careful. Stay off the road.’ That’s one part of the job I wasn’t expecting.” The number of e-Bikes imported to Australia has tripled over the past five

years. They use rechargeable batteries and can travel up to 25 km/h (16 to 20 mph). In picturesque and hilly locations like the Northern Beaches, it’s no surprise they’re gaining popularity. “We have a huge variety of customers,” says West. “From 16-year-old surfers, to nurses who commute to the Northern Beaches hospital and 70-year-old ladies who want to ride again. We’re converting people’s habits and getting them out of their cars.” And that’s the great benefit of an e-Bike - it’s good for you and good for the environment. “A lot of people have normal bikes and never use them because of the hills,” says West. “If you have an e-Bike, you’ll use it every day and still get your heart rate up. Even if you’re assisted, you’re still peddling.” Energy Electric Bikes have nailed their dream of delivering affordable bikes and exceptional customer service. “I’ve enjoyed working with people all my life as a cameraman and people like working with me - now I’m bringing that vibe to the shop. I want to make people feel welcome and looked after.”
West says the shop will always be small and community focused and in a suburb like Brookie, that’s the perfect path for success. •

Brookvale’s
True Colours
“It’s definitely an interesting transition for Brookvale,” he says. “In 2003 there were very few two-story buildings in the street. Now there are quite a few three-story ones. “For the first 10 years, it was business as usual. Then a bit of retail started to come in. Then it was sandwich stores and coffee shops. Now, the microbrewery thing is happening, there are distilleries and the art scene is certainly coming to life.” In 2018, David handed the front of his premises over to talented artist Miguel Gonzalez and a wonderful 3D mural appeared. “We used to have this 1960s textured red brick facade,” he recalls. In 2014, we painted it COLORBOND® Ironstone, that the staff called ‘Long Bay Grey’. Then in 2018, Miguel approached us to do the mural. It’s fantastic. Brookvale is getting a more artistic vibe and I love that.” While food, art and alcohol continue to take up more real estate and a
“It’s crazy here during the week,” admits David. “There’s a lot of traffic and parking is a big issue. Sometimes there’ll be three semi-trailers waiting to access the factories.”
FILLING THE GAPS Parking, public transport and affordable housing are just a few fundamentals the Council will need to address if Brookvale is to continue to blossom and boom. “We need the right infrastructure to support people,” says David. “Many of our employees who used to live locally have now moved away. One drives from St Clair. Another used to live in Balgowlah but now lives on the Central Coast. Two others come from near Botany Bay. There’s an issue when people who work in manufacturing can’t afford to live in the local area anymore.” When you’re chatting to locals, the subject of the West Harbour Tunnel and Beaches Link attract conflicting opinions. “Some locals say they don’t want this access upgraded. For me, better transport would be brilliant,” says David. “I was born in Manly Hospital. We must think about ways we can move people and goods more efficiently and have fewer cars on the road.” “There are places like Norway - big countries with small populations and rich in natural resources like Australia their local and long-distance rail is first class. We should be learning from countries like that.” For local manufacturers, there’s also the concern that certain businesses that historically made up the fabric of Brookvale could easily get priced out of the market.
There’s the possibility that warehousing and retail will squeeze out heavier industries. That’s a worry because there are some wonderful people in Brookvale making world-class products.” David Stuart, Managing Director, Colormaker Industries. “There’s the possibility that warehousing and retail will squeeze out heavier industries,” says David. “That’s a worry because there are some wonderful people in Brookvale making world-class products. It would be interesting if Council could structure development so we can retain heavy industries even as more maker spaces pop up. That could mean multi-story occupancy.” While the suburb around Colormaker develops, David remains committed to reducing their environmental impact. “A big change over the past 2 years is that now, our manufacturing uses 100% renewable electricity. Our solar array produces twice as much power as we use. We have an electric vehicle for local deliveries. Our objective is to be carbon neutral by 2030, perhaps even by 2025 if we can manage it.” With leaders like this in the hood, it feels like Brookvale is in capable hands. •

THE HISTORY OF KEYO INTERNATIONAL Legend surfer Midget Farrelly was the first surfboard shaper brought in to help with the workload at Keyo. Denny in fact shaped the board that Midget rode to victory in the first World Surfing Championships, held at Manly Beach in 1964. Enter Bob McTavish, another legend of the surf industry, who joined Keyo in 1967. Here he shaped his Vee bottom, wide backed nine footers which in part kicked off the short board revolution. The McTavish designed Keyo Plastic Machine Vee bottom models were soon selling at the astonishing rate of 70 a week. In 1968, Nat Young came on board and with his high profile Keyo produced another popular model, the Tracker. Other high profile shapers to work under the Keyo label were guys like Kevin Platt, Neil Purchase, Geoff McCoy, Col Smith, Phil Cooper and Mickey Mac. In 1972, Denny acquired the Hobie Cat franchise and began building catamarans. By 1974, the production of Keyo surfboards finished, giving way to the high demand of the popular Hobie Cat.
BEACHES COVERED. GOT DOWN TO BUSINESS WITH THIS ICON OF THE BROOKVALE SURFING INDUSTRY AND ASKED JOHNNY SOME POINTED QUESTIONS. Q. Johnny, how did surfing come into your life? What path has it taken you down? I have been surfing most of my life, nearly 50 years. I started surfing, well, catching waves at least when I was a toddler. Surfing was just what we all did as kids growing up in Avalon. It was almost weird if you didn’t surf. As I got older, I took a slightly different path to a lot of my friends. I found a love of all kinds of craft, not just what the guys on tour were riding. I was interested in old boards, longboards, retro ones like Eggs and Fish, and finding out what all the alternative boards could offer. Q. When did it become your career? I am a sailmaker by trade in my younger years, but eventually found my way into the surfboard game later in life. I married into the Keyo surfboard family, a little bit of surfing history, and eventually resurrected the label once again. Q. Your brand Keyo is located out of the Rhino Laminating factory in Brookvale. What’s the gel there? Well, it’s nice I get to make Keyo surfboards in the suburb Keyo started in back in 1959. Rhino Laminating is a great place to work. It’s a hive of activity with lots of great labels and quality glass jobs. Q. Why is Brookvale a great place for your business? Brookvale is a great place to work. There’s so much industry around and you don’t have to travel far for materials or even a good meal. It has everything, except the parking. There’s also some cool little boutique businesses popping up, bringing a little bit of culture to the area as well. Q. Lastly, tell us three things you love about Brookie? Proximity to the beaches. You can get almost anything you need. And, it’s home to the mighty Sea Eagles. •

Beaches COVERED. caught up with Juan to find out how Brookvale has the best glass-house in the country right in our backyard. Q. From the early days, how has surfing nurtured your life? I was born at Southport on the Gold Coast and enjoyed early years with Dad taking us to the beach every day after he finished work. Dad was a keen West Australian surfer who moved to Gold Coast when he married Mum. We moved to Brisbane for all of my school years but I still remember having car trips back to the Gold Coast, to surf Greenmount and Rainbow Bay on most weekends. My first wave was around 7 or 8 years old on an old cordingley single fin of Dad’s at Rainbow Bay. Q. When did glassing surfboards become your career? The family moved to Lennox Heads when I was about 17, around 1995. I started some basic board making and general fibreglass work in a factory with Dad, mainly making airplane struts for planes.
The factory was in Ballina just over the road from Bob McTavish surfboards. The polisher at Northcoast surfboards had broken his arm and back then, most boards they made had to be polished. They needed another polisher urgently and Bob put my name forth to give me a go and from that moment on, I was making surfboards full time. I moved to Sydney in 1996 and found work making boards with Rod Dalgleish

JOHN VICKERY & JUAN TWYCROSS Words:
Q. Why is Brookvale a great place for your business? I feel very proud and happy to be making surfboards in Brookvale. I started Rhino at 18 Carter Road in Brookie. Our current location is now at 42 Orchard Rd, where we have a factory and retail surf shop, Rhinostore, to showcase the fine surfboards we make. We feel that we are continuing the tradition of fine surfboard makers in Brookvale and look forward to doing so for many years to come. surfboards. He’s an amazing tradesman and taught me many great skills to add to the finishing work I learnt from Tony Squirell at North Coast Surfboards. Natural progression was to get my own surfboard business so in May 2001, I started Rhino Laminating. It’s almost 20 years to the day. Q. What’s Rhino Laminating best at? The number one thing I was taught is quality. It’s our number one goal and what we strive for everyday. You have to set a very high standard for yourself and then lead the way for everyone else to follow. We pride ourselves on Rhino Laminating delivering a very high standard glassing job, always.
been 10-12 hours per day for 20-plus years. It’s what I’ve put in and I only surround myself with like minded talented people that deliver these results on a daily basis. That’s what we’ve done from the start and what makes Rhino Laminating stand out as the best. When you look at the quality labels and shapers we work with, it proves that we are doing something right. Campbell Bros, Simon Anderson Surfboards, Mike Psillakis, Keyo, Channel Islands, Christenson, Jim Banks, Greg Webber, Steve O’Donnell, Panda, Oceanside, Surf Empire, Joshua Keogh, Vontak, Wizstix.
It’s the standard we live by. I’ve spent many hours to become a skilled board maker. On average, it’s
Just look for the Rhino logo and you will know you will have the finest quality glass job on your surfboard.
Q. Lastly, what do you love about Brookie? From industrial supplies of any type to amazing cafés, food shops and breweries, it has changed so much over the last 20 years, but is developing into something special. Brookvale has such diversity of different companies that work out of postcode 2100. You can find everything you need right here. •

LAYOUT: The busiest room in a house needs consideration to maximise the space. Contemplate the distance between main fixtures and appliances – a great way is to roleplay a typical night in the kitchen and work out where to situate your stove and sink. Common kitchen layouts are U-shaped, L-shaped and Galley kitchens. APPLIANCES: People spend around 20% of the kitchen renovation budget on appliances. When sourcing appliances, consider dimensions, look, brand, quality, features and energy efficiency. Words + Photos:
COLLAROY KITCHEN CENTRE DID YOU KNOW THAT A KITCHEN RENOVATION CAN ADD UP TO 6% TO YOUR PROPERTY’S OVERALL VALUE? IT CAN ALSO DRASTICALLY IMPROVE THE LOOK AND FUNCTIONALITY OF ONE’S HOME AND THAT CAN OFTEN BE MORE THAN ENOUGH TO START PLANNING THAT DREAM KITCHEN RENOVATION. Here are six things to consider before getting started on your dream kitchen redesign.
DETERMINE YOUR KITCHEN GOALS: Are you sick of how outdated your kitchen looks? Not enough storage options? Or you want to improve how functional your kitchen is? Before drafting any plans, think about the desired style, design and colour palette to form a cohesive kitchen.
property
BUDGET: Set a realistic budget. Most complete kitchen renovations vary between $30,000 to $50,000. You need to be prepared for costs such as: demolition of old kitchen, materials, appliances and labour.
LOGISTICS: As well as getting the appropriate approvals from strata or council, don’t forget to consider the layout aspects like plumbing and electrical. Does your sink or power points need moving?

Knock-down Rebuild vs Selling Words: LIZZIE Photos: G.J.
HENEBERY GARDNER HOMES
“We purchased a block of land in 2018 in a ‘Freshy’ street. Since then we’ve knocked down the old 1940s one bedroom shack and built a beautiful home, making great use of the block size and orientation. We estimate that home has now increased in value by 50% from it’s original purchase price in September 2018, with the new home on it. Had we left the original shack there, the value would only have grown by 20%,” explained Horst. WITH THE PROPERTY HOUSING MARKET ON THE VERGE OF A BOOM, HOUSE PRICES ARE SET TO RISE UP TO 16 PER CENT, ACCORDING TO CBA ECONOMISTS. NORTHERN BEACHES HOME BUILDERS ARE EXCITEDLY SHARING THAT IT’S THE PERFECT TIME TO KNOCK-DOWN AND REBUILD IN THE REGION. G.J. Gardner Homes Sydney North owners Horst and Melissa Lueckl spoke with Beaches COVERED. to explain that all the right ingredients for a smart home investment exist in the current housing market.
pr prope proper property
“With the limited land availability in our area, low interest rates, an ever improving economy, government incentives and the housing market booming, we’ve never seen a better time for homeowners to knock-down and rebuild their dream home in Sydney’s Northern Beaches. “We’ve read that property prices are rising at the fastest rate in 17 years, according to Core Logic data, and in Sydney, house prices have skyrocketed 2.5% higher in February 2021 in a surge not seen since 2003. There are many contributing factors with great conditions, lots of cashed-up expats returning home and a great fear of missing out causing the prices to surge.” said Horst Lueckl.
For those living in the region, it may well be better to ‘stay put’ in the street that you know and love and make your house the home you have always wanted. “With the option of selling and buying, you will sell really well at the moment; however, the ‘buy’ is a different story. You might well go backwards with such interest in the limited stock that is for sale,” Horst explained. For anyone looking to enter this housing market, it’s the time to do it because prices are only going to go up, according to the Commonwealth bank economists. They are predicting rises of 8% in 2021 and up to 16% over the next two years. “Those who make the decision to move to or rebuild on the Northern Beaches will benefit from that growth in home value and can either sell at the top of the market or use their equity for investments down the track. The biggest increases can often be seen in a knock-down rebuild situation with a beautiful new home in an excellent location,” shared Horst. Horst and Melissa know first-hand how much a knock-down rebuild project can increase in value. Their own showcase home in Freshwater, a knock-down rebuild won the Daily Telegraph Home Magazine People’s Choice Award in 2020.
A knock-down rebuild involves demolishing an existing, usually older property on an ideal piece of land and building a new home from the ground up, rather than renovating the existing structure. “There are important considerations for both renovating and rebuilding, as well as moving. There’s no one-size-fits-all for every family. That’s why we’re happy to sit down with homeowners to explore the options, the ins and outs, so they can confidently make the right decision for their situation. “Knocking down and rebuilding a home can allow the homeowner to have complete control over the project while benefiting from a more advanced, energy efficient and modern design. It can also be a more cost-effective option compared to a major renovation. In some circumstances, renovating can often be riddled with unforeseen delays and variations,” shared Horst. The team at G.J. Gardner Homes are happy to talk with anyone keen on a knock-down rebuild project in Sydney’s north. They can provide extensive details on the process, what to consider and how to make the most of your block. Connect with the G.J. Gardner Homes Sydney North team. Major kid fun THEY SAY THERE ARE FEW THINGS MORE CONTAGIOUS THAN A CHILD’S LAUGHTER, AND NOW THAT SOUND RINGS THROUGHOUT MAJOR FUN AT HARBORD DIGGERS, AS MOUNTIES GROUP LAUNCHES WHAT THEY PROMISE WILL BE AUSTRALIA’S MOST EXCITING CHILDREN’S PLAY CENTRE. ‘MAJOR FUN FRESHWATER’ HAS OPENED ITS DOORS!
It’s the Mounties’ latest evolution in the journey towards providing an intergenerational approach to club design, bringing short and long-term benefits for members and guests as well as the local community. Mounties Group CEO, Dale Hunt, said the move was the obvious next step for Australia’s foremost club group and that they are incredibly excited to show it to the public. “Last year we asked our members what they wanted from Mounties Group in the future, and of those who took part, one in three said that they would love to have a place that was more suited to entertaining their children and grandchildren,” he said. “They wanted something that transcended what is currently offered in the club industry, and something their children would be genuinely excited to visit. With that, Major Fun was born, and we are very confident that we have delivered on this request and then some.
“Our new play centre has been built with the sole purpose of bringing families together and, hopefully, offering the most exciting play area in the region.
“It will be a place for kids to play, share new experiences, and create memories with their parents, grandparents and siblings, and enjoy a learning experience unlike any other. “We enlisted the help of the team behind Tabatinga Play Centres, so we are confident in the high level of safety and quality these centres will have,” he concluded. ‘Major Fun Freshwater’ will reflect its beachside positioning with an incredible underwater theme – one that will have kids’ imaginations running wild about our oceans and the animals that live within them. The venue has a strong educational component all guided by cute characters - Max & Mala, the incredibly knowledgeable and passionate explorers who are the face of Major Fun. Max & Mala are experienced adventurers who impart their knowledge through fun facts and information and believe “it’s never too early to explore the world!”

Making the Covid Fit-Switch 2021
There are too not many ‘good news’ stories to come out of a horrific virus that has caused pain and misery around the world, but being a Personal Trainer, luckily enough for me is one. So many carbs and so many people at home, with so much excess time on their hands has made for a prosperous return to work for me… post lock down. We find ourselves deciding whether to put off ‘kick starting’ your ‘new you’, or just continue to enjoy the moment and all the decadence that comes with it. Heaven knows that those little luxuries have become a habit way too easily and are way too hard to just give up. Like an extra wine, or beer, or two, every afternoon or little extra grazing on nuts, chips, dips and bickies or whatever it is that has slipped into your daily grind? It’s not just the food that has burgeoned but with so much time on our hands, somehow, we’ve managed to be way too busy to move. Each one of those habits alone doesn’t signify a catastrophe, but link them

together, every day, and before you know it, your health, wellness and confidence have started to slip. Feeling unwell, unhappy and unmotivated is not an environment conducive to making positive changes. ‘I eat badly because I feel unwell, I feel unwell because I eat badly,’ and the vicious cycle is created. Much of what’s transpired since ‘Covid 2020’ has been out of our control but there are a few things you can, what you eat and how much you move. Whether it’s at the gym, outdoors or at home, you can give yourself that push to ‘get going.’ Don’t let ‘the start be the thing that stops you!’ Make a decision and then stay true to you. We all know that exercise and good nutrition will improve your health, fitness, mobility and flexibility but often overlooked though a vital part is the benefit to your mental health. Remember the slippery slope we just spoke about? Eat bad, feel bad cycle? You can exit that ride equally as easily.
day, you’ve started to reverse the cycle you’re living. With an increase in movement comes opportunity and motivation to improve what you eat. Eat well, exercise regularly and you will almost certainly feel better. You’re forming new habits and replacing the old with positive and empowering new routines.
Just take that first step.
It’s the perfect equation; you will be improving physically and medically but more importantly giving yourself the opportunity to enhance your mental health.
Start with something easily manageable. With a 20 minute walk but done every
It’s time to start! Go and take that first step. I Dare Ya! •

Mind Body BALANCE IN THE PAST YEAR WE’VE ALL LEARNED HOW TO RE-INVENT, PIVOT, LIBERATE AND BALANCE OUR MIND AND BODY.
lifestyle
BUT WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR YOUR FAMILY AND BUSINESS LIFE FOR 2021? HOW HAS IT CHANGED YOUR MIND BODY BALANCE?
side of things. My passion did not wane and clients immediately embraced this too. My unique fusions of yoga, pilates, barre, restorative, dance and meditation continued with the same sense of joy and community. I streamed classes into my clients’ living rooms, playrooms or wherever there was space for a screen, mat, ChiBall, hand-weights and bands. Each individual continued their Body and Balance classes instead of needing to leave the house. This became, and still is, so important for continued fitness, but also for mental health. My classes and courses benefit Mind Body Balance and continue to keep the positive mindset because of the following: Regular exercise releases endorphins known as ‘the happy hormones’ which decreases feelings of depression and anxiety. This became prevalent for many over this past year and being able to guide people to balance Mind and Body not only helps people be fitter and stronger, but also happy. My mantra – be fitter, stronger, happier and live longer.
In 2020, we were all suddenly thrown into chaos and required to work out new strategies involving life skills and mindset challenges if we were to keep our lives and our businesses afloat. Week one of lockdown, the pivot for me was an exciting new world of Fitness and Wellness challenges, as the whole world entered turmoil and the fitness industry was basically shut down. Luckily I had three decades of teaching skills and a fabulous husband to connect me to the world of ‘Live Streaming’. With this knowledge, I knew that mind, body and balance was the utmost importance to maintaining positivity in life. My living room became a studio for live streaming, with me on screen and my husband, Didier, actioning the technical
Weight management through a balance of body and mind. My ten principles, developed over years of teaching, covers both physical exercise, including cardio, strength and stretch for a start, but also relaxation and meditation with positive intentions as a complete mind, body and balanced workout. Focus and Mental alertness through the principles of focus, breath, alignment and spinal mobilisation. Balance of internal organs through spine twists - liver to right, spleen to left - with breath to enhance focus and transform the sympathetic nervous system to parasympathetic. This calms the nervous system, lowers blood pressure, the heart rate and enhances oxygenated blood flow throughout your system.
Your self-esteem gets a boost as you begin to look and feel better. This will lift your energy and positive vibrations around you, which in turn makes you feel mentally and physically balanced. Enhances your flexibility. Fitness, wellness, flexibility and strength are all keys to a happier you and helping you be physically and mentally free of fear and illness. Muscle and mind increases strength. This enables you to do everyday tasks with ease, keeping joints and bones strong as we age and frees the mind to focus on the positive. Balance and focus improvement. In all my classes, we practice left/right brain balance with breath. Perfect Posture is gained through awareness of spinal alignment, focus, breath, core engagement, stretch and strength. This is all part of my ten principles. This in turn enhances focus and productivity, particularly if the spine is stressed from desk work, stress, incorrect breathing and poor core strength. Gain the Mind Body Balance you seek. This is when your consciousness and mindset changes to know inherently that this is the most positive way to live in perfect harmony. Body and Balance is now back for face-to-face classes or live streaming from the Body and Balance Studio. You can continue to enjoy classes via live streaming, anywhere in the world, to balance your family and work life. Book your free 15-minute ZOOM fitness and wellness consult to find out how. MENTAL HEALTH BALANCE
Homeopathy MENTAL HEALTH CAN BE HEAVILY DISRUPTED WHEN FACED WITH FINANCIAL STRESSES, A CHANGE IN ROUTINE, OR A SENSE OF UNCERTAINTY. An Australian research organisation, The Aurum Project, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to natural medicine research, conducted a study into Homeopathy to determine how good health requires a balance of physical and mental health. Their study saw 27% of people see a Homeopath for their mental health. Led by Dr Celeste Salter and Linlee Jordan, the study was established to understand why people visit homeopaths in Australia. Data was collected over a two-month period, including demographics of age, gender, ethnicity, state or territory of residence, as well as basic homeopathic data. Not only is mental health the most common reason to visit a Homeopath, but it is also by far the most widespread. Patients visit almost three times more for mental health purposes, compared with the next greatest singular reason – skin conditions.
“Even when there are physical issues a client comes in with, the conversation usually always turns to the emotional and mental links to their disease. “Whether we are treating a child with an ear infection who misses mum’s cuddles at daycare, or an adult who has struggled with immune issues since an early trauma, homeopathy acknowledges the significant impact that stress and emotional/mental illness have on our health,” remarked Penny Barron from Harbord Homeopathic Clinic in Brookvale. “We are very complex creatures, and there is so much more to all of us than just a bunch of biochemical reactions and neurotransmitters interacting together. During a homeopathic consultation, we aim to understand the entirety of the person. We see the immune system as being not just on the physical level but on emotional and mental levels as well. This allows us to treat our clients on a thoroughly holistic level no matter what the issue is.” For many, Homeopathy can be part of the support needed to maintain their mental health and bring back balance. The Aurum Project has a dedicated network of homeopaths and natural therapists who support and empower each other. Become a member by visiting www.aurumproject.org.au

GET AWAY TO MANLY’S MOST AFFORDABLE WEEKEND ACCOMMODATION, JUST FOOTSTEPS FROM OUR ICONIC MANLY BEACH. WELCOME TO ROYAL FAR WEST’S DRUMMOND GUEST HOUSE. Following a year-long hiatus, Royal Far West is again opening its doors to weekend holiday makers, with a central location that is perfectly situated for a mini break. Just steps away from great shops, cafés, restaurants and night life, why not spend a weekend in the centre of Manly and help vulnerable children who live in rural and remote areas of Australia to access the health and wellbeing services. “We’re thrilled to reopen and offer a great value weekend holiday experience for our guests. Every booking helps us to raise much needed funds to support country kids in need,” said Pip Abbott, Royal Far West’s Head of Accommodation and Venues. Available most Friday and Saturday nights, Drummond House has 34 rooms, each with bathroom, tv and tea/coffee making facilities. There’s even availability over the Easter, June and October long weekends. Suitable for couples, groups of friends, and families, there are accommodation arrangements from 2-6 beds. For peace of mind, the charity offers a risk-free COVID booking policy, enabling guests to cancel without penalty until the day of their stay. Tariffs start from $140 per night for a budget twin room, including a generous continental breakfast. STOCK UP WITH AUTUMN MARKET FRESH WITH YOUR FAVOURITE LOCAL GROCER, THE HARBORD GROWERS MARKET STRAWBERRIES Strawberries are bright red, juicy, and sweet. Rich in antioxidants and plant compounds, they are good for the heart and blood sugar control. Perfect on their own or great for a sweet dessert. Sprinkle on top of a fresh pavlova or baked cheesecake or try making some homemade strawberry jam.
PEARS A good source of gut-loving fibre, pears contain Vitamin C to keep your immune system fighting fit. Choose an Australian variety such as the Packham, Williams, Beurré Bosc, Red Anjou or Red Sensation Pears. Great on a cheeseboard or a freshly cooked Autumn dessert. Pack a pear in the kid’s lunch box - they’ll love them.
WATERMELON MUSHROOMS
This refreshing fruit is soaked with nutrients. Not only does it keep you hydrated with 92% of water but it’s also one of the lowest fruits in calories. Watermelon helps lower inflammation and oxidative damage as it’s rich in the anti-inflammatory antioxidants lycopene and Vitamin C. Ladies, it’s time for a Watermelon Margarita. Cheers!
Mushrooms come in lots of different shapes, sizes, and colours. You can’t go wrong with mushrooms and they are incredibly versatile. Add them to your favourite casserole or pasta dish, grill them on the barbeque or create the most awesome mushroom sauce to add to your steak. Our tip is to fry them up and add them onto toast for breakfast. The ideas are endless.
CAULIFLOWER ZUCCHINI Zucchini is packed with many important vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, but how do you get the little ones to eat them? Introducing zucchini noodles, or as they’re known “zoodles”. Add some fun with the family dinner. Finely cut or find a vegetable spiral maker and create a fun vegetarian dish for dinner tonight.
Nothing beats a home cooked roast with roasted cauliflower cheese. Packed with all the good nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants and fibre, this often mistaken vegetable can boost your immune health and reduce the risk of heart disease. Incredibly versatile, cauliflower can be used to replace grains and legumes in your diet.

Women
THIS YEAR, ON THE 8TH OF MARCH, WE CELEBRATED INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY. THERE ARE MANY WAYS WE CAN SUPPORT AND CELEBRATE WOMEN’S ACHIEVEMENTS, CREATING AWARENESS REGARDING BIAS AND HAVING CLARITY AROUND OUR BOUNDARIES WITHIN OUR WORK AND RELATIONSHIPS. We can #choosetochallenge, this year’s theme, the stereotypical idea of what an empowered woman looks like. She is often portrayed as a high-powered extrovert who effortlessly oozes confidence. The truth is, whether you are loudly or softly spoken, it does not matter - It is your presence that is powerful. What does empowerment mean to you? It may be that you give yourself
permission to embrace and love the parts that are perfectly imperfect. To choose to grow and nurture a kinder voice inside that says you are more than enough. To develop trust in yourself, to be resourceful in times of uncertainty and to live a joyful life, aligned with your values. I invite you to #choosetochallenge yourself, to challenge any thoughts that may not be serving or supporting you because often critical thoughts can creep in; when we feel tired, pressured or overwhelmed with anxiety or self-doubt. So... if you were to imagine stepping into your empowered self, what would that look like? How would you stand and breathe? How would you make decisions? How would you speak to yourself? Who would you have in your tribe and what would you give yourself permission to do or to be?
