FOR THE ALUMNI, PARENTS, AND FRIENDS OF COVINGTON LATIN SCHOOL

SUMMER 2019

CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2019!

FEATURES: SENIOR SIGNING DAY // ACADEMIC AWARDS // ALUMNI AWARDS

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER Dear alumni, parents, and friends of Covington Latin School, It is with immense enthusiasm and gratefulness that I write this letter. I am eager to watch Covington Latin School continue to grow with its students and with the opportunities and challenges presented by today’s society. I am thankful that, as superintendent of schools, I had the opportunity to walk the halls of CLS every day to better get to know the students, faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, alumni and overall community. As we turn another page in the rich history book that is Covington Latin School, I am mindful of how fortunate we are to have a school like Covington Latin in the Diocese of Covington. Looking back at all that was accomplished this year, I know that none of it would have been possible without the support of our faculty, staff, students, families, and community. Our students showed off their talents in the Sound of Music. Our seniors wrote impressive theses amidst applying for college. Our club and athletic teams made us proud at the local, regional, state and national venues. Our art students astounded us with how they see the world. Our dedicated faculty encouraged our students to participate in national science fairs, language competitions, and community service. Our House Cup Competition continued to create a sense of community across all grade levels. We even took our experiential learning overseas, when 40 CLS students and parents were able to spend the 75th anniversary of D-Day on the beaches in Normandy. These are just a few of the events that shaped the 2018-19 school year and created opportunities that will enrich the lives of our future leaders. Additionally, the Grand Event was the most successful yet and allowed us to match a $20,000 gift to build a first-class multi-purpose Computer Aided Design lab to grow our Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) program. With the lab in place, our curriculum was able to expand to allow students more choices and more ownership of their educational course of study. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention specifically, our Debt Reduction Matching Gift Campaign. We had a unique opportunity this year through a generous benefactor to raise up to a million dollars that would help us pay down the debt incurred from our building renovation and addition. We engaged alumni from across the world to come back home to the Latin School. Alumni not only supported our debt campaign, but they established named scholarships, offered to mentor our students, and networked with other alumni. While the extrinsic purpose drove some initiatives, it is the intrinsic rewards that we remember daily, and I look forward to Headmaster Gressock experiencing those relationships as he leads Covington Latin School. So many times I have said, “Thank you,” to the good Lord in appreciation of those who invest in Catholic education. Your investment of your aptitude, means and time in Covington Latin School calls for a ‘Thank you” both murmured in the quietness of my prayer and shouted from the top of my lungs. All the best, Michael Clines Superintendent of Schools

SCHOOL NEWS Our students are talented both in and out of the classroom. They certainly don’t rest on their laurels. Here is a little glimpse in the lives of our students. Sam Latz ‘19 participated in the International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Arizona. He competed against 1800 students from 80 different countries. During the fair, Sam had the opportunity to hear presentations from Nobel Prize winners, meet CEO’s of major corporations, and network with other future scientists. Jonah played the part of the town bully in a movie about William Hoy who was one of the first deaf Major League Baseball players in the 1800’s. Cecelia McDaniel ‘24 was the CLS Prep 7 and 8 Spelling Bee Champion. She went on to participate in the Scripps Spelling Bee.

Exciting Changes at Covington Latin School

CURRICULUM UPDATED TO REFLECT GROWING PASSION FOR SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ARTS & MATHEMATICS AND MORE Covington Latin School is committed to educating the best and brightest students in the area. In order to do that, CLS has unveiled a new curriculum to allow our students the opportunity to make their most of the time at Latin School. Our commitment to a classical education remains steadfast. Students have the opportunity to take four years of a foreign language just as those who came before them. We fervently believe that language development gives our students a leg up on their peers. It creates pathways in the brain and encourages divergent thinking. However, for some of our students, their passion and talent lies in a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) program. We would be doing our students a disservice by not allowing for those opportunities as well. Starting in the 2019-2020 school year, students will be able to expand their course selections to include JAVA programming, Robotics, Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Web Design.

10

Covington Latin School will be adding more Advanced Placement classes in the sciences, dual credit options, online classes through NKU’s Scholars program, and specialized five-day-a-week art classes. To allow for these opportunities, some adjustments to the curriculum had to be made. Covington Latin School will now require two years of Latin. Students can choose to remain on the classical pathway and take four years of a foreign language or elect to move into a biomedical pathway, pre-engineering pathway, or computer science pathway. The options are almost limitless now for our students and the new curriculum will allow for students to stretch their minds, go beyond their comfort zone, or follow their passions.

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER

Dear alumni, parents, and friends of Covington Latin School, My name is Joseph E. Gressock, most adults call me Joe. I am not sure what students will be calling me, but officially it is Mr. Gressock. I have been involved in Catholic Education for almost four decades and I have loved every moment of it. Teaching has always been a ministry for me and it is the main reason I have dedicated my life to Catholic Education. On a personal note, I am married to my high school sweetheart, and we will celebrate 49 years of marriage later this summer. We have two children and three grandchildren. I arrive at Covington Latin feeling ebullient, merrily anticipating the start of the new school year. I am pleased for the opportunity to serve the Covington Latin Community. As I researched this position I found that Covington Latin is a school with a rigorous curriculum and has carved a specific niche for academically gifted students. Some of these students are non-Catholic, yet Covington Latin is to be applauded for not backing away from insisting that faith formation be part of the curriculum even for non-Catholic students. As education expert Diane Ravitch has observed, “A large part of the Catholic schools’ success derives from the fact that they are faith-based and that they sustain a sense of genuine community. The success of Catholic schools depends on maintaining their religious identity, as well as the freedom to speak freely about ones values.” I might add that Dr. Ravitch is a non-Catholic. My vision for Covington Latin has its genesis with the understanding that we are made in God’s image and are destined for everlasting life with God. This is not an afterthought or addendum but rather Christ is the entire reason for the existence of Covington Latin School. As one journeys with Christ, Covington Latin will strive to develop students who will be good citizens of the world, loving God and neighbor, and enriching society. Continued academic rigor is an essential ingredient of the vision. We must maintain our high educational standards challenging our students to reach above the societal norms for high school students. Our instructional techniques must strive to develop a love of learning in our students and to encourage individual investigation. Finally, our students must be able to demonstrate a firm understanding of the subject matter presented to them over the course of their educational careers at Covington Latin School. I am extremely excited about the upcoming school year. I have met some of our students, faculty, and parents recently, and I now realize why Latin School has such a favorable reputation. I soon discovered that it is a good school; let’s make it a great school. Pax et bonum,

Joseph E. Gressock
