ALSO FEATURING: WHAT I DID OVER SUMMER VACATION GRANDPARENTS DAY MATCHING GIFT ANNOUNCEMENT
A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends: Every school year brings with it change. A change in senior class and first-year preps; new faculty and staff members; last-time and first-year parents to CLS, and for this school year, a change in leadership. With the late-July departure of Mr. Huther, I have been appointed by Bishop Roger Foys as the interim headmaster of Covington Latin School while maintaining my role as superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Covington. I have been blessed to work closely in one way or another with all 39 of the schools in our diocese, and I have really enjoyed working with the CLS community at a more personal level this year. The faculty meetings, parent and student orientations, parent mini-night, Grandparents Day, Wednesday all-school Masses and the interaction with the students are a smattering of my experiences so far this year. They all reaffirm what a wonderful and steadfast institution Covington Latin School remains after 95 years of existence. As we kick off our annual appeal, the two greatest challenges and imperatives we face annually are offering salary increases that are fair and necessary to keep gifted faculty and staff members in our learning community and maintaining tuition that is affordable and the best value for our quality education. For people who drive by the school with no affiliation to Covington Latin, they see a beautiful, historic facility, and might think that we have an abundance of money. I understand these impressions, but here is some of the inside story about the school finances: • Salaries at Covington Latin School are lower than salaries at area public schools. Considering that public schools’ salaries in Northern Kentucky are considerably lower than public schools in other neighboring states, teachers and staff members could easily command higher salaries elsewhere. This is a testament to our teachers’ commitment to the students and to the mission and motto of CLS. • Parents sacrifice to send their child(ren) to Covington Latin School. Their sacrifice shows a commitment to accelerated, Catholic education and to edifying their children to achieve their greatest level of spiritual, intellectual and social development. • New additions and upgraded facilities do not create much income. In fact, they create additional expense through maintenance, utilities, and cleaning costs. • Borrowed funds are paying for the newer academic wing and upgraded facilities. As you can literally see, Covington Latin School’s building addition and renovations have the school prepared for decades to come, but fiscally, like most if not all parochial schools, we have many challenges ahead. It is only through the generous giving of the Covington Latin School community that we are able to balance just salaries, best-value tuition, and facility maintenance to create an optimal learning environment for our students and future community leaders. Therefore, during our Annual Appeal, I ask that you please consider pledging to our commitment. Covington Latin School has succeeded and will continue to succeed because of people like you. I am excited to share that an anonymous donor has pleadged a matching $500,000 gift to help reduce our building construction deficit. I hope you will consider being a part of the matching gift program. More information about the matching gift is on page 10. May God continue to bless you and your family, Michael Clines Interim Headmaster

CLS ACCOMPLISHMENTS
What I did over summer vacation Our students don’t rest on their laurels during the summer. They are out doing! We are so proud of their stewardship and leadership.
Francis Rodriguez ‘19 spent three weeks in the Philippines, part of which was serving on a medical mission. The area that he served is often plagued by horrible conditions. He worked with the Indigenous Peoples and helped them with eye exams and spent his own money to buy frames and other supplies.
Carson Thackston ‘23 participated in the talent show for Davidson’s Young Scholars in Reno, Nevada. He also won first place in a Taekwondo competition held in Cincinnati.
Ben Codell ‘19 attended a two week program at the University of Notre Dame. He participated in the Young Scholars Program and completed the course, Archaeology: Exploring the Foundations of Notre Dame. The program included actual daily excavation at “the Old College site” on Notre Dame’s campus, and included classes taught by Notre Dame professors on artifact identification and cataloging, interpreting geophysical surveys, and the analysis of archaeological animal remains. He even got to use ground penetrating radar! Ben stayed on campus for two weeks, in Fischer Hall, and had his picture taken at “touchdown Jesus”, which is a famous landmark on campus for the football team.
Laurynn Smith ‘21 continues to follow her passions by working all summer on her choral singing. She was a camp counselor at the University of Cincinnati for 12 days working with younger, less-experienced music students. After that camp, she went to Anderson University and spent a week working with national performers. She also participated in Bel Canto with the Cincinnati Youth Choir. Their performance was broadcast nationally over public and classical radio. Her choir won the 2018 Chorus America Award.
Shannon McCarthy ‘21 spent a week in North Carolina to attend “Shakespeare Death Scenes” theatre camp. Shannon was recently cast as Maria in Covington Latin School’s version of The Sound of Music. Amit Adhikari, a senior at Covington Latin School, went to Nepal to volunteer at a school for the mentally challenged. The Tarvin Family were very successful in this year’s county fairs. Ella ‘20 won First Place at the Bracken County Livestock Showmanship Show. Cecelia ‘21 won Second Place in the Beef Division and Eli ‘19 won Grand Champion Market Steer at the Pendleton County Fair. Ella Thornberry ‘21 was named Champion Photographer at the Kenton County Fair.
Our teachers never stop learning either!
Jacob Schuetter ‘22 volunteered through Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens ZooTeens Program. As part of the Zoo’s Buzz Troop, he took 1343 photos of pollinators (bees, butterflies and other insects) for the Ohio State University Bee Lab program sponsored by the Ohio Extension Office at Ohio State University. Over the course of ten weeks, he learned to identify multiple types of bees, butterflies, and other insects.
Mr. John Lane attended Yale University’s Gilder-Lehrman Institute of American History. He attended the Life and Writings of Frederick Douglass Seminar. Recently, he was named an Outstanding Educator by Cincy Magazine.
Ms. Stephanie Tewes once again took CLS students on a trip of a lifetime to Peru where they saw Machu Picchu, a desert oasis, islands covered with birds and seals, took pics with llamas, met with people on the floating islands, and ate guinea pigs. Ms. Tewes was also named an Outstanding Educator by Cincy Magazine.
Mr. Jeff Finke ‘80 attended a workshop on Particle Physics at Summit Country Day. Along with religion teacher Julie Cruts and Science Chair Dr. Ruth Hemmer, he attended the McGrath Institute on Church Life’s Foundations at the New Orleans Notre Dame Seminary. They spent a week studying the intersections between Faith and Science. Dr. Tatyana Pinyayev participated in AP Test grading in Utah this summer. After that, she was able to travel to the Ukraine with her family.
Summer Vacation (cont.) Ms. Anna Little went to a Sacred Music Retreat at St. Anne’s Retreat Center in Melbourne, Kentucky, at the beginning of August. It was hosted by The Oratory of St. Philip Neri in Cincinnati, and featured three days of workshops with fantastic Composer/Director Kevin Allen from Chicago, and Nicholas Lemme, Director of Music for the seminary of the Fraternity of St. Peter in Denton, Nebraska. She was there with over 50 other choir directors, singers, and music educators from all around the country, and sang a Traditional Pontifical Requiem Mass, and Pontifical High Mass with Archbishop Emeritus Edward Slattery of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mrs. Lindsey Skipper (photo left) spent 17 days in Spain with her husband and son, staying with her former host family in Bilbao, where she lived for a year in college. She was a guest English teacher at a language school for middle and high schoolers. Other highlights included visiting Guernica, the Basque town whose bombing inspired the famous Picasso mural (a subject of the Form III Spanish class curriculum), an excursion to Segovia with its first century Roman aqueduct (see picture), reconnecting with friends and former professors, and the opportunity to introduce her bilingual two-year-old to her favorite corner of the globe. She also attended the International Forum on Language Teaching for second year in a row, this year held locally in Cincinnati. She joined hundreds of other language teachers from all over the country to develop instructional practices that align with the Comprehensible Input approach to second language acquisition. Ms. Kelly Kusch attended the American Classical Conference in Missoula, Montana, where she gained valuable information and resources to bring back to her classroom. She also took 28 students and three alumni to the National Junior Classical League Convention at Miami University. Did you know, Covington Latin fills six of the seven Kentucky state officers positions? Ms. Heather Couch attended the American School Counselor Association Conference in Los Angeles, California, where she gained valuable information that she is implementing in the CLS Whole Child Initiative. Mrs. Sheila Gray developed a week long Debate Camp for students in the area. Campers were taught by Kentucky debate coaches and held a mini- tournament at the culmination of the week. Eight CLS students participated in this camp and got a headstart on their debate skills for the upcoming season.

GRANDPARENTS DAY On September 12th, Covington Latin School welcomed 240 grandparents to campus for our annual Grandparents Day celebration. This year, CLS blew the lid off of our normal Grandparents Day. Grandparents were treated to lunch with their grandchild, got to experience classes, celebrated Mass, and posed for some adorable keepsake photographs. Longtime Covington Latin supporter, Marna Zalla, spoke to our grandparents about what it is like to be a part of the Latin family. It was such a wonderful day.

WILBERT ZIEGLER: A LATIN LEGACY Mr. Wilbert Ziegler, CLS class of 1949 and 2005 Distinguished CLS Alumnus recipient, is a founding and senior partner at Ziegler & Schneider, PSC, a Crescent Springs law firm. Celebrating his 60th year of practicing law, he has served as General Counsel for the Kenton County Airport Board since 1967. He is known throughout Greater Cincinnati for his boundless energy and dedication to service. Mr. Ziegler is married to Ellen Arbogast Hackman Ziegler, widow of CLS Alumnus George Hackman, ‘49; mother of CLS Alumnus George Hackman, Jr. ‘84; sister to CLS Alumnus and long-time faculty member Paul Arbogast ‘46 and Alumnus Richard Arbogast ‘57; and aunt to Alumna Annabelle Arbogast, ‘08. Mr. Ziegler’s path to Latin School started with a conversation with Sr. Evangelista directing his parents to enroll him at CLS in the summer of 1945. His time spent at CLS included close order drill with Capt. Walsh and a focus on Latin and Greek. He credits the extemporaneous speaking and other oratory skills learned at CLS as leading to, in part, to his success. After CLS, he earned degrees from from Thomas More College (A.B.), University of Cincinnati College of Law (LL.B.) and the University of Michigan Law School (S.J.D.). His message our Latin Community is direct: “Maintain your integrity, be honest. “Many-bodies” helped get you to where you are today...show appreciation. Always act with dignity. And...work like a dog.” We thank Mr. Ziegler for his continual support of his Alma Mater, congratulate him on his life and career successes, and wish him continued prosperity.

DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT Matching Gift Announcement
We are excited to announce that we have received an anonymous matching gift that will help offset the cost of our building debt up to $500,000. The donor challenged the Covington Latin community to amplify their giving so that we can continue to grow well into the future. This gift will be matched until June 30, 2019. If you have been on campus in recent years, you know what a spectacular facility we are fortunate enough to call home. The new expansion allows Covington Latin to grow both its programming and capacity. We now have state-of-the-art science facilities that rival that of universities. The Kohlhepp Family Forum is a gathering place for our students, whether they are using it as a dining hall or theater. The Commons, where Friday assemblies occur, and courtyard are beautiful spaces where students blow off steam during lunch and after school. With this type of expansion comes a great cost and the cost is undeniably well worth the sacrifice.

Please consider this year to be the time when your money can be doubled and can ensure that Covington Latin School continues to grow and educate the next generation of leaders.

A MESSAGE FROM CLS ADMISSIONS
Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends: It is a warm August morning. The floors are all shiny and everyone’s classrooms are freshly decorated and awaiting the newest classes of Covington Latin students to sit in its desks. This is such a fun time at school. You can see the anticipation and excitement both from the teachers and from the students. This is the start of a new year and for many new to CLS, it is the start of an exciting journey. For me, as an Admissions Director, this is the culmination of a lot of hours of work and sleepless nights with everyone of them being ever so worth it! I have the unique opportunity to be the first point of contact for our new students. For some of our students, this has been a long time in coming. For one family in particular, I have worked with their children since they were third graders when they started attending ExploreMore! classes and fell in love with CLS. I took great pleasure in seeing them pass the test, attending Welcome Week, and eventually registering to attend this year. For other students, they are legacies and I get to hear about the good old days of the Latin School from their parents. Last year, we had the first alumna send her child here. How amazing is that! This year, we have two Latin School couples, the Ehrmans and Thompsons, sending their children here. How fun is that! Whatever the road that leads them to us, it always starts with the same question: Why choose Latin School? I can simply tell my family’s story. It started as an itch. My son, Jake, was taking classes several grade levels above his peers from a very early age. He was becoming bored and apathetic. His love of learning and insatiable appetite for reading was diminishing. He wasn’t the kid I knew and he definitely was not working at his capacity despite being subject accelerated. Something just wasn’t working and there is nothing more frightening for a parent than to see your child not being their authentic self. So we began to scratch the itch. We looked at several different schools in the area and narrowed it down to several for him to shadow. I will never forget the day I picked him up from his shadow day, he said that he found his people! What is funny is that I now hear that from nearly every student that visits CLS. What an amazing and relieving feeling it is to find your tribe, to feel like you belong and to feel safe. That was it for us. We registered the next day! This time of year reminds me of that first time Jake walked through the doors with his tie and giant binder that was bigger than he was. We were so excited of the opportunities that a Latin School education would provide him. I feel that same excitement for our new students who have come to CLS with their own stories. Having seen them the first time they enter the building to take their test when they were almost white with fear and then hearing that fear go away once I hear their voices on the phone when I tell them they have been accepted. I get to see their anxious but excited faces on the first day of school and get to help them learn how to use a combination lock! And now that a few weeks are under their belts, I see what I knew would happen all along. They have found their people. They are flourishing in an environment where they are free to be themselves and be all that they can be. What a rewarding job I have! Latin School truly is a place like no other. It is a home for our kids. It is a sanctuary. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of their journey. I am always looking for the next Jake, or Ehrmans, or Thompsons. Please share your story and why you sought something different with others. Latin School truly is a place like no other. Amy Darpel Director of Admissions
