A MESSAGE FROM CLS ADVANCEMENT Summer 2018 Dear Distinguished Alumni, Family and Friends: We all have a story about the first time we entered the doors of Covington Latin. My first visit was coming to an Open House with my then public school 5th grader. With the entire family in tow, we sat in the second row from the front, avidly listening to the speeches of educators, parents and then a remarkably composed Prep student. We had not heard of the opportunities and possibilities that an education from Covington Latin could present but were, frankly, intrigued. Could we better serve our child by striving to make this leap of faith and setting aside our fears of acceleration? It would be a two year jump, yet we knew our child needed the extra impetus to perform to his highest capability. Nine years and two graduates later, we can unequivocally say it was a good decision. That decision is one made by families each year and I am reminded of the process: the late night study sessions; the frantic final touches of senior thesis; practice, practice, and more practice for speech competition; the David & Goliath aspect of Latin Sports, and so much more. Covington Latin School prepares our graduates for the road ahead. From the time our younger son shyly enter the school for their first day of class to departure from the Cathedral after commencement, CLS grows leaders and achievers. As I watch the Class of 2018 line up for commencement in the Cathedral, I feel the pride and satisfaction in their accomplishments. Each has devoted the time and effort to completing the classical curriculum of Latin School and is preparing to take the next step, next chapter, and next purpose in personal growth. Whether it is college, travel abroad, service to community, country or family, each graduate has a unique destiny to fulfill and a completely individual path to reach it. For the years attending, each is focused on life at Latin and now boldly goes where so many have gone before… forward. Be assured as our graduates move forward, we are still here. The community, friendship and support enjoyed while at Latin are still here. Faces in the school may have changed but the heart and soul of Covington Latin remains steadfast and true. You will always be welcome and encouraged to visit any time. Covington Latin School prepares our graduates for the road ahead. SCHOOL NEWS AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS Maria Bossert won first place in the hand-drawn category for grades 9-12 in the annual poster contest sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP). She won a $50 cash prize for her artistic rendering of the theme “El español en marcha” (Spanish on the move). This is the second year in a row a CLS has won first place in this national competition. Michelle Horner earned honorable mention for the digital art category. PERFECT ACT SCORES • Sean Longbrake • Amit Adhikari ROTARY CLUB GAP YEAR TO MEXICO Laura Dressman has been selected by the Rotary Club to spend a year in Mexico attending a local high school and living with various host families. She hopes to learn about Mexican culture and improve her Spanish. Laura did a homestay in Argentina in 2017 with Language and Friendship, Inc. and was co-President of Spanish Club during the 2017-2018 school year. SPANISH AWARD Ashley Zalla has been selected to participate in monthlong homestay in Buenos Aires, Argentina to improve her Spanish and be immersed in the culture. (Latin Awards cont.) National Latin Exam - taken by all Latin students Eighty-seven percent of students taking the exam won an award. Thirty-eight percent of the awards were gold medals. All juniors and seniors won an award. Three seniors won Oxford Classical Dictionaries for earning four gold medals in four years: Sean Longbrake, Dante Durden, Audrey Woodward. Elijah Deters earned a perfect paper. GOVERNOR’S SCHOLARS Four Covington Latin School students have been accepted to participate in prestigious educational programs this summer. Juniors: Christian Schuetter, of Villa Hills, and Ryan Garuccio, of Florence, were selected to participate in the highly competitive Governor’s Scholar program. The Governor’s Scholar program was created nearly three decades ago to help develop future leaders through a liberal arts experience. Students in the program have the opportunity to live on a college campus during the summer and acquire an unparalleled educational experience. In addition to the Governor’s Scholars, Covington Latin Junior, Jacob Yoder of Newport, was selected to participate in the Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs. Sophomore, Elijah Fox of Elsmere, was selected to participate in the Governor’s School or Arts.

HISTORY CLUB AMONG TOP TEN IN NATION Once again, Covington Latin has been named as one of the top 10 History Clubs of the Year. This is an amazing accomplishment since there are over 375 chapters across the country. Mr. John Lane is the sponsor of the Covington Latin History Club. His enthusiasm and love of history inspire his students to not only study history but to experience history first hand. Mr. Lane sponsors field trips around the area and is currently planning the next Europe trip to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day landings in the summer of 2019.

SPORTS REPORT SPRING SPORTS WRAP-UP ARCHERY
Because of increased participation, the Latin School Archery Team split into 2 squads – Varsity and Middle School engaging 40+ student-athletes. Your Latin School Varsity Archery Team has surpassed all expectations in only its third year of existence. After a strong showing at Regionals, our Archers qualified for the NASP State meet. That stronger State performance earned the team a spot at the National Tournament in which it finished in the top 100 in the country. But…our Archers are not yet finished…that Top 100 spot at Nationals qualified the team for the NASP World Tournament that took place in Louisville June 7th thru 10th. Our team placed 61st in the world. Well done Archers! TENNIS
Your Latin School Tennis team achieved huge successes this year as well. Prep 7 Sara Watanabe finished her regular season 7-1. Her singles runner-up performance in the 9th Region earned her a spot in the KHSAA State Singles Tournament in Lexington. She competed thru the Sweet Sixteen. Junior Toshi Watanabe ran the table as Latin School Boys 1st Singles finishing 11-0, including wins over 1st Singles state qualifiers from Calvary Christian, CovCath, Villa Madonna, and Campbell County. He won the 9th Region Tournament Singles Title earning a slot in the KHSAA State Tourney where he played thru the Elite 8. Freshman Kazu Watanabe, playing 2nd Singles, finished 8-0 this season. His loss in the quarterfinals to Calvary Christian #1 prevented his state participation this year. Great season by all! TRACK
Participation on our Track Team exploded this season, engaging 24 student-athletes, mostly underclassmen. Many personal records (PR’s) were clocked. The season culminated with Senior Paul Rahner finishing 10th in the 1600 meter at the State Tourney. Looking forward to next year! SOFTBALL
Your Latin School softball team finished the 2018 season with a record of 7-13. The team made CLS history with three no-hitters! Sophomore Marianna Rozell and the rest of the squad earned these in May with two of the games being back-to-back. The May 20th no-hit victory versus Holmes High School earned our team it’s first ever district win. Great season, ladies!

CLASS NOTES Daniel Elmlinger ’11 received Master of Health Services Administration from Xavier in May. Emma Reis ‘11 received her Master of Science in Nursing from Xavier in May. Allie (Foster) Meister ‘11 received her Master of Business Administration from Xavier in May Veronica Colegrove ‘08 is a Technology Consultant in Security & Privacy Lab at Protiviti in Chicago, ILL. John Berberich ‘07 was accepted to A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona. He will be going to Mesa to complete his first year of didactic education and will be returning to the Greater Cincinnati Area for the last three years at a Community Health Center to complete his didactic work and clinical rotation. Connor Wall ‘09 graduated from NKU with a degree in public relations and psychology. While at NKU. Connor won recognition for his strategic planning initiatives and campaign organization in nation public-relations competitions. He also served as Chapter President of NKU’s Public Relations Student Society of America.

Robby Case VI ‘17 was named to the Thomas More College PAC Academic Honor Roll Spencer Fogelman ‘10 matched into his first choice of anesthesiology programs at University of Kentucky Medical Center. Lily Rogers ‘10 graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and will be doing her residency at the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor. Kaleigh Howland ‘15 is a staff writer for www.collegemagazine.com. Kaleigh will be a senior at Indiana University. Kate Minzner ‘16 is blogging for International Studies Abroad during her semester in New Zealand. She is currently a Junior at Chapman University in Los Angeles, California. A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER Dear CLS Community, I pray the summer months are treating you well, no matter your circumstance or location. Once the school year comes to a close and the building no longer hosts the chatters and footsteps of our students, we slow the pace a bit in our preparations for next year. Although this past year was remarkable in many ways, full of achievements, honors, and efforts affirmed, we now set our sights on next year, with its myriad opportunities. As we officially place the bookend on the 2017-2018 school year, we dedicate this edition of the Leader to our newest crop of alumni – the class of 2018. These bright young men and women have impressed us with their diligence, their kindness, their faith, their prowess, and most importantly, their ability to have fun while “grinding” out a tough senior year. I remain in awe as I review the memories of this past year with a beloved group of students, each of whom will be missed. We know that greatness awaits our newest graduates, no matter the measure. We are proud of the class of 2018 and we hope this edition of the Leader displays the recognition our newest alumni so richly deserve. As I’ve said many times this year, the class of 2018 is aptly described as an embarrassment of riches, with so many talents, so much character, and such great potential. Each summer, we also spend much time discerning the needs of our current students and developing programs to address those needs. For the second year in a row, Covington Latin School is growing, ushering in excitement that contagiously impacts all of our efforts. Most of our growth is seen in our Prep 7 and Prep 8 classes, which are designed to fully prepare students for a successful year in Form I. We continue to monitor the curricular needs in these formative years so that our students can launch into summative studies having mastered all the necessary skills and tools. Thus far, ample evidence exists to validate the goals and outcomes of our Prep grade levels, and the growing interest serves as further affirmation. One notable goal next year is the engagement of all CLS stakeholders in the strategic planning process. Strategic plans serve as the buoys for an institution, offering direction to guide our efforts and speed to see them through. We have established astrategic planning Steering Committee, which will further engage alumni, students parents, and community members to address all of our current needs and to capitalize on opportunities in future years. As alumni, your input will be crucial throughout this process, so expect to hear from us next year with a survey designed to solicit feedback about your alma mater. We will also communicate any needs to fill positions on our strategic planning sub-committees. As alumni, you are one of our most vital assets, in many ways, to help move us forward. We are proud of your accomplishments and thankful for all of your contributions of time, talent, and treasure. We especially note the achievements of the impressive alumni honored at this year’s Alumni Banquet. It is our hope that you allow the spirit of recognition and affirmation to carry you through this edition of the Leader.
