A MESSAGE FROM CLS ADVANCEMENT Winter 2018

THE LEADER TABLE OF CONTENTS WINTER 2018

Dear Friends, Parents, and Fellow Alumni: This time of year is very busy in the CLS Development Office. Planning for our Open House for prospective students and families, Welcome Week, and our Annual Appeal to benefactors keeps our schedules full. On February 11th, with sessions at 1pm and 3pm, the entire Latin School Community hosts prospective students and their families. Student Ambassadors guide each new family through our world-class facilities meeting faculty members and other students in each classroom. Those new families consistently tell us how bright, poised, and informative our students are during the tours. Our Open House is followed by Welcome Week (February 20-23). New Students are matched, one-on-one, with a Student Ambassador living a day-in-the-life of a Latin School Student. The day’s activities include class time, lunch, and a scavenger hunt. The Open House and Welcome Week culminate in the February 24th Entrance Exam. We all know that personal referrals make the best clients. We very much appreciate you introducing a bright 5th, 6th, or 7th grader to Latin School. Those interested students and parents can contact us at (859) 291-7044 or click on the following link to learn more: http://covingtonlatin.org/admissions.

Nick Korzenborn ‘19 earned his Boy Scout rank of Eagle. Nick’s project was a Gaga Ball Pit, a 4-square style game, for the CLS Courtyard. His project has been a hit before school, during lunch, and after school with students enjoying the fresh air, camraderie, and exercise.

CLS RAFFLE NEWS

Christian Schuetter ‘19 also earned the rank of Eagle. Christian’s project benefited the Good Shepherd Catholic Montessori in Mariemont, Ohio. He and his volunteers built benches around a playground.

Print media must have gone away with the dinosaurs, because our annual magazine sale wasn’t generating the profits that it once did. This past summer, CLS APT President Christina Rauf, proposed a raffle to raise money to support all the fun events that happen throughout the year.

Hailey Lemire ‘22 received the highest honor at YMCA Camp Ernst. She received the award of Honor Camper for displaying outstanding character qualities. Of 4000 campers who attend Camp Ernst each year, Hailey is among 2% who earn this honor. Amit Adhikari ‘19 and Ben Baioni ‘20 placed fourth in the Varsity Public Forum Speech Competition. Zoe Hoelmer ‘22 placed third in the category of Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate.

If we know one thing about our students, it is that they are hugely competitive and that they desperately want to earn a day off school. With that as an incentive, the student body shattered our goal of raising $20,000! The APT raised $24,000.00. Jonah Hermes ‘18

Prep 7 student Austin Matheny sold 136 tickets! His YouTube video and social media posts created quite a buzz and earned him the top prize of $1000. And you know, if you sell that many tickets, the odds of selling the winning tickets are high. Austin’s aunt won the Jackpot of $5000 which earned Austin half off tuition next year. Way to go, Austin! Check out this guy’s selling skills.

Football homecoming at cls

LEAVE YOUR LEGACY

On November 22, Covington Latin hosted its first Football Homecoming party. Did you know that CLS has been undefeated in football for 94 years?? That is quite an accomplishment and very worthy of celebrating! Alumni from as far back as the 1960’s attended this open house event. Many alums stopped by on their way home from work. We were especially happy to see alumni who were in from out of town. It was great to hear all the stories and get caught up with what everyone is doing. And what is a tailgate without food and drinks? Wild Mike’s Wings were the highlight of the tailgate food. Yum! The Homecoming Party was such a success that we will be holding this event every year! We are CERTAIN we will still be enjoying our winning streak! We hope next year that you will join your classmates and bring even more alums on campus.

Partnership With Thomas More College Fuels Growth for K-12 Enrichment Program It is 7 AM on a chilly Saturday morning in November. One would expect a quiet school building, but not this particular Saturday. Teachers and CLS student aides are busy setting up for a unique program designed to challenge and enrich bright children around the area. Covington Latin is proud to host the ExploreMore! Program. ExploreMore! is an enrichment program designed to meet the needs of students who love to learn and wish to go beyond what is taught in the regular classroom. We at Covington Latin believe that this is a natural fit between the two programs because we know that students who are not appropriately challenged or given enrichment will become bored or discontented with their education. Course offerings are of high interest to our students in the fields of math, science, writing, visual and performing arts, and technology. The hands-on classes are meant to emphasize critical thinking and independent learning while offering a learning culture where like-minded students can come together to share ideas and passions. This year, our ExploreMore! Program has grown tremendously. Not only have we expanded our class offerings and schedule, we have partnered with Thomas More College to give their students the opportunity to teach bright students as well as provide resources for our Parent Lecture Series. Our Parent Lecture Series is designed to educate and inspire parents on how to provide the best opportunities and educate the whole child. Having a bright child can sometimes 10

be a challenge and unfortunately, school systems are often not able to address this population of students. Because of this lack of support, we host speakers who are experts in the fields of gifted education. We have hosted Dr. Edward Amend, a world-renowned psychologist, as well as other gifted education specialists and educators. We strive to be a resource for the best and brightest of the area. Covington Latin and ExploreMore! want to be the resource that families can rely upon to foster a love of learning. One parent shared with us that he would not know what his child would do without the program, “At ExploreMore!, my daughter has a place to be her authentic self. She can geek out and no one pressures her to dumb down. She can be an artist and a scientist all in one class. She looks forward to going to “school” on Saturdays! She jumps out of bed and can’t wait to learn. That is not her experience at her regular school.” We are happy to be able to provide this for these kids.

Partnering with College and Beyond Part of our expansion this year includes adding the 9-12 program. ExploreMore! has partnered with College and Beyond to offer ACT Prep classes. There are many ACT Prep courses available, but we partnered with College and Beyond because of their unique approach. The College and Beyond approach is personalized to show the strengths and weaknesses of the testers and individualized programs are set up for them. This allows students to focus on what they need to learn in order to gain a higher score. Some students are seeing up to 6 points increase in their overall scores.

REGISTER A STUDENT FOR EXPLOREMORE! The ExploreMore! Program hosts classes on three Saturdays in the months of January, March, and November and a full-day week camp in June. Registration is currently open for the March session. If you know of a child who would benefit from this program, please share our website, www.exploremore.rocks.

IN MEMORIAM (CONT.)

SAVE THE DATES

Wayne Homer, 1939-2018 Mr. Wayne Homer, Covington Latin School counselor from 1994-2009, passed away on January 18 at the age of 78 after a hardfought battle with brain cancer. Mr. Homer was a valued member of the faculty and administrative team for many years, working under four headmasters. Mr. Homer came to us after retiring from Cincinnati Public Schools; his last school was Taft High School. One would’ve thought that transition from Taft to Latin would’ve been quite a culture shock, but you never heard that from Mr. Homer. To him, kids were kids, wherever he went, whatever school they attended. He treated everyone with that same accepting and respectful manner. Mr. Homer will be remembered, by former students, parents, and faculty alike, for his optimism and dedication to his students.
