New Years’ Resolutions

E

very year people revel in the idea of a New Year’s resolution. Gym membership sales soar, the latest fad takes off and then a month or so later we are back where we started. Why is that? How can we be so invested, excited, dedicated and then nothing? Can we blame it on the time of year? January is still cold, rainy, sometimes snowy but ultimately, dreary. What about a New Year’s resolution to love? A hard concept, but for those whom we love, we want the best … for their minds, bodies and souls. What if we did something this year that nourished not only those we love, but ourselves as well? Gardening nourishes our bodies by giving us exercise as well as healthy foods to eat, our minds and souls by clearing the clutter of the day to day and connecting with the earth.

January is the perfect time to begin thinking about spring. Take some time to imagine what you would like to eat fresh from the garden. Do you have a sunny spot for tomatoes or a shady, cooler spot for lettuce? What will you cook, can, share? Cowichan Green Community has the Community Seed Library, available for membership. Members have access to a variety of seeds in small quantities to “take out”, grow out, and reap the harvest but ultimately learn how to seed save in order to return seeds to the library in the fall. Supports are offered in order to guarantee success. If you are looking for larger quantities of seed, Cowichan Green Community’s Cowichan Agricultural Seed Hub has been growing out varieties locally and organically. These seed packages are available now! Are you new to the idea of gardening? We have you covered with an informative work shop: Introduction to Natural Growing Methods with guest facilitator Bart McNeil. This workshop will be held at the Cowichan Agricultural Seed Hub on February 1st from 10:00 to 12:00. Call Kat at 250-748-8506 to reserve your spot today.

A

to order for you and pick is the day before you begin so you are ready to start in the morning. No mess, no heaping bowls of compost to deal with - just all the nourishing tools you need to cleanse. A schedule is provided to help you through each cleanse day. I like to cleanse when I am busy. The convenience of grabbing all my meals and snacks - ready to go - helps me to stay focused on my tasks. Instead of feeling drained from being busy, I feel energized and detoxified!

fter all those delicious indulgences its time to gift our bodies some good health for the new year. Feeling sluggish and tired too? Slow brain and a slower body is not a sign of ageing, its often a sign for a tune up just like the car, our bodies need to be flushed and fortified and a 3 day cleanse can help do the trick. Why Cleanse? Toxins accumulate in our daily lives from the environment and from the foods we eat. These toxins build up in our bodies, especially through the colder months and slow down the way our brain and body functions, impeding our ability to be the best that we can be. As we naturally slow down in the winter, January is a perfect time for a juice cleanse. Like regular yoga, successful cleansing is achievable with great support. Many of us have done our favourite poses for decades, but how many of us practice them on our own at home? The support of our yoga instructor to pace us and guide us through a session is what ultimately enables our mind and body to reap the benefits. At $10 - $25 a class - we happily pay to be guided through these sessions. A supported cleanse works much in the same way. Glow Juicery has researched specific organic fruit, vegetable and mineral blends for each of their juices. A schedule is provided, calibrated with the juices based on what our bodies need from morning to night. Each

New Year New Cleanse blend contains no less than three to six pounds of 100% organic greens, fruit and vegetables in every bottle. The juices fill you up with cleansing and beneficial nutrients throughout the day while giving your digestive system a much deserved break. Getting Started Visit the store or register online at www. glowjuicery.ca. Here you will find juicing cleanse packages. Each cleanse is made fresh

Day 1 - As per instructions I begin the day with organic lemon squeezed into a large glass of water. Very alkalizing, it helps get your stomach ready to breakdown and absorb all the nutrients from the mostly green juices you will consume in the next few days. Day 1 begins with a 7AM Ener-G Glow a dark green elixir of organic pears, spinach, cucumber, celery and chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is the green pigment found in plants used for photosynthesis - when light transfers into energy. Like all green vegetables it is a powerful source of vitamins A, C, E and K. and also has some major benefits: Helps fight cancer by binding to potential carcinogens and interfere with how they are absorbed within the gastrointestinal tract. Improves metabolism and digestion by alleviating constipation, and helps control bodily odours. I’m impressed. It is also promotes healthy iron levels, effective for anemics. All that work before 9AM! Next juice is Glow Boost, a refreshing vegetable blend of organic

spinach, kale, cucumber, broccoli, mint and pomegranate. For an early lunch I enjoy Vitamin G a sunshine blend of organic carrot, cucumber, orange, lemon and ginger. Off to a meeting I grab my Citrus Glow a tantalizing mouthful of organic oranges, lemons, ginger and coconut water to take along for my 2 PM treat. I return after a full day to prepare supper for my family. I enjoy large glasses of lemon water while I make them a hearty stew. I take a break at 4PM to enjoy an After Glow a sumptious blend of leafy greens - organic spinach, kale, parsley, cucumber, celery and apple and then sit down for supper with everyone as I sip on a palette cleansing Skinny Glow melon, apple, cucumber, spinach and celery. After this juice I enter the Evening Rest Phase - a time to allow the body to absorb the nutrients. I enjoy a herbal rose tea just before bed. Your cleanse will be more effective if you consume the recommended 10 glasses of lemon or aloe water per day as your body will be able to flush out more toxins. Pre cut lemon wedges as a reminder! Day 2 - Big elimination day. After a full day of juices and an evening of rest the body is able to clear passages to move those toxins through. I wake up with a mild headache - a common symptom of detoxification taking place. I pull the first 4 juices out of the fridge to warm up on the counter. The morning is cold and I instinctually know that cold juices will not help me stay warm. I warm my hands on my cup of lemon water and look at the juice schedule on the fridge. Day two feels harder because without any solid food to digest,

the body is able to fully release toxins stored in the fat cells. Though it is only Day 2, I notice my senses are already dulled to the pull of sugar and salt. As I pack the children’s lunches I am not tempted to sneak a grape or bite of the gingerbread that goes in. Day 2 is a powerful day of detoxing. Honouring my symptoms I lie down for an extra nap between juices for a rest. I wake feeling energized and strong despite not having eaten solid food for 38 hours. I enjoy my late afternoon juices drinking extra lemon water for optimal flushing. Day 3 - I wake feeling extra energetic. My family, already used to this cleaning schedule has a warm cup of lemon water ready to greet me. I feel a bit sad at the thought that this is the last day of cleansing. My mind feels lighter, my body feels lighter. I intend to savour this last day of juices. Another cold morning I set the first three juices out to take the chill off them. I marvel as I study all the organic ingredients in each bottle. Hah! No compost to deal with no juicers to scrub and rinse. I go about my day feeling proud and radiant. Elimination is still strong so be sure be close to a washroom at all times so the body can naturally release without having to wait. As I wind down to evening time, I savour every last drop of juice knowing that after 8PM will be my final evening rest phase. Post Cleanse - I wake up feeling incredible. Now in the habit of starting the day with an alkalizing lemon water I continue for a few more days. One of the most interesting observations I find is my lack of craving of anything. My neutralized palette and clean

body senses for more of the same. Fresh, organic and clean foods to consume. Day 4 finds myself back at Glow for a tumeric Wowzaa shot and another juice. Not quite ready for anything else I enjoy a mandarin orange and grab a Kale Me Krazy salad to enjoy later. By giving my colon and intestine a well deserved break from digesting cooked and processed food, my body received a unique opportunity to absorb only beneficial enzymes and nutrients from each 3-6 lb organic juice blend. The Glow 3 Day Detox Cleanse is a delicious, gentle and supported way to kick start your

health for the new decade. Cheers to your health! Cleanses need to be pre ordered at least 3 days in advance. Juice blends are available in glass bottles for an extra deposit fee. All Glow Cleanses are available for booking in person at the cafe, online or by phone. highlighting the diversity of the acoustic guitar. Guest host Mike Dawes (England) and his incredible two-hand contemporary style is joined by fretless guitarist from Turkey Cenk Erdoğan; electrifying jazz virtuoso Olli Soikkeli from Finland and Hawaiian Slack Key master Jim ‘Kimo’ West. “For 20 years we have slowly built a loyal and ever growing audience for International Guitar Night. Each tour offers an enthralling view of the burgeoning acoustic guitar renaissance,” says IGN founder Brian Gore. “Every year is the best year yet, and this year is even better! The melange of mind bending British finger style, Turkish fretless improvisation, virtuosic gypsy jazz and laid back Hawaiian slack key is sure to be a show stopper.” Mike Dawes is an English guitar player known for composing, arranging and performing multiple parts simultaneously on one instrument using unique extended and micro-techniques Cenk Erdoğan was born in Istanbul in 1979.. In 2016, he arranged and conducted orchestral music for Sezen Aksu, the queen of Turkish pop. Sezenli Yillar has performed 6 concerts with a 35 piece orchestra and visuals and dance shows. The next year, Cenk released his latest album, Lahza, with Swedish drummer Mehmet Ikiz. Lahza is a guitar & drum duo project consisting of original music and live improvisations.

He performs regularly with his solo, duo, and trio projects and composes in a wide range of musical styles. Olli Soikkeli was born in Nurmes, Finland in 1991. He started playing guitar at age of 12. After a few years of playing Olli was introduced to the music of the great Django Reinhardt and Gypsy Jazz has been Olli’s main focus ever since. Despite his young age he’s already played with stars such as Bucky Pizzarelli, Stochelo Rosenberg, Tommy Emmanuel, Andreas Öberg, Cyrille Aimee, Anat Cohen, Antti Sarpila and Marian Petrescu. Having never even seen Waikiki, Jim “Kimo” West came right to Hana, Maui in 1985 and spent much of his time there for many years. Best known as long-time guitarist for the world’s most successful musical comedy artist, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Kimo is regarded as one of the world’s foremost “ki ho’alu” or Hawaiian “slack key” guitar artists and his music has garnered many millions of streams on Spotify and Pandora. The circles of aunts, uncles and grandparents were tickled by his early renditions of the theme song from Davy Crocket: King of the Wild Frontier. The same relatives were not so thrilled by his discoveries and emulations of the early stage stylings of Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor. Whether the attention he received was positive or negative, it was during these early days that hooked Ryan into evoking emotion from those around him.

H

appy New Year! Celebrate the new year with a new cheese! Cure Artisan Meat and Cheese is bringing in new Italian imports every week. Come and visit us to learn about feature ingredients and enjoy demos, samples and more. This month one of our favourite new imports is Pecorino. After a month of rich holiday foods we are hoping to inspire some simplicity with this classic pasta prepared with grass fed butter and topped with a specialty pecorino. Pecorino romano is a hard, salty Italian cheese made with sheep’s milk. Produced in Sardinia, Tuscany, Lazio the name “pecorino” means “ovine” or “of sheep” in Italian. This month we have been enjoying pasta with Pecorino Al Tartufo a delicious semi-hard pressed cheese blended with large flakes of earthy black trufflles. By adding the delightful flavour of this special cheese, your pasta can be quick, simple and shockingly delicious. Cure is open 7 days a week. 250-929-2873 5-1400 Cowichan Bay Road Cobble Hill

Ingredients

1 package Pasta Al Burro e Salvia 6 Tablespoons Grass Fed Butter 12 fresh sage leaves chopped Shaved Pecorino Toscano Tartufo

Natural Solutions For Anxiety

I

f you’re experiencing occasional anxiety, you’re not alone. According to canada.ca, 3 million Canadians aged 18 years or older reported that they had a mood and/or anxiety disorder. Mental health problems are skyrocketing across the world, with approximately 1 in 5 North Americans affected each year. And these statistics only reflect people that are diagnosed. How many are not diagnosed or don’t visit their doctor, and more importantly, why? In some cases, the fear of taking prescription medication is a factor. Anti-anxiety drugs can have side-effects that can often make a person feel worse. Some include: Anxiety Insomnia Flu-like symptoms Indigestion Loss of appetite Low sex drive Weight gain Headaches Dizziness Confusion Heart problems And many more… A diagnosis of anxiety is serious, and medication side-effects are usually well considered when medical doctors prescribe. However, you don’t need a diagnosis to be able to raise your hand and ask for help. If anxiety is stopping you from living a full life, it deserves attention.

14

A new perspective: Natural products offer a more gentle approach to treating anxiety. Some herbals have been used for their effectiveness for centuries, while some others are now recognized by more recent regulatory bodies such as Health Canada. Some examples: Ashwagandha Traditionally used in Ayurveda as Rasayana (rejuvenative tonic) and to balance aggravated Vata (nervine). It is also used in herbal medicine as an adaptogen to help increase energy and resistance to stress.* Holy basil Used in Herbal Medicine as an adaptogen to help increase energy and resistance to stress (in case of mental and physical fatigue related to stress).* Passionflower and American ginseng Used in Herbal Medicine to help relieve restlessness and/ or nervousness (calmative).* Used individually, one of these herbs may help to reduce stress, restlessness and nervousness. Put together, anecdotal evidence suggests that they effectively and sometimes dramatically relieve anxiety, without scary side-effects. A more gentle approach to relieving anxiety. There’s a good idea! *Health Canada Submitted by Rekha Sharma

Cannabis can easily be grown outdoors or in a greenhouse, harvested and dried in October, and turned into a wide range of medicine to suit your needs. Specific strains with elevated levels of non-psychotropic CBD can be grown for those who wish to avoid or limit the “high” associated with the THC found in cannabis. For those who prefer not to smoke it, cannabis can be easily heated to cure it (known as “decarboxylation”), then infused in vegetable oil or butter for ingestion by mouth or capsule and for use in cooking and baking. Additionally, cannabis can be made into massage oil or ointment for topical use as well as tinctures for drinking. Before legalization, an informal survey of Vancouver Island dispensaries revealed that 80 – 90% of dispensary clients were middle aged or older and were using the plant primarily for pain, sleep assistance, and/ or medical symptom relief. Many of us are not interested in recreational use of the plant but are seeking healing plant medicine. Cannabis is a gift to us all, particularly as we age, and learning how to grow and use it is a skill we can easily acquire.

any of us were overjoyed that we could finally ‘grow our own medicine’ when cannabis became legal in Canada in 2017. Cannabis has been in medicinal use for over 10,000 years in China, India, Egypt, Europe and the Middle East, and more recently in North America, for a wide range of ailments including insomnia, nervous conditions, gastrointestinal disorders, and pain relief. For much of human history, cannabis has been a widely respected healing plant. With legalization in 2017 came a confusing regulatory quagmire across the country at all three levels of government. According to Health Canada, there are now over 120 licensed cannabis producers in Canada, but for consumers, insufficient access and uneven quality has meant product shortages and disappointment. Further, approx. 80% of licensed cannabis has been irradiated to control pests and microbes, which may damage some product components. In addition, high prices in the closed marketplace have shut out many consumers and encouraged the black market to continue. For those of us who can, the legal ability to grown 4 plants

Beneficial Vegan by TinaLee Foster, RHN

C

ommon now today, many choose to avoid animal products in their diet, and adhere to plant-based foods. The vegan diet has many benefits for the consumer, the animals, and the whole planet Earth! Pollution is no joke in this day and age, and while we all wish the government would do more, the power to make an impact is in all of our hands, as is the responsibility to be cleaner and greener. Choosing plant-sourced fare helps in this way because

16

factory farming is so at large that is creates a huge negative impact on the health of the environment, including greenhouse gases created and the depletion of the ozone layer, soil runoff and erosion, and the wiping out off forests for farming land. Much of this area is used to grow cheap crops for animal feed instead of sustainable food crops for human consumption! How wastefully nuts is that! Animal welfare is a main concern, like environmental issues are. Mass produced

The Duncan Garage delicious house made all beet vegan burger. Topped with vegan cheese, guacamole, fresh salsa and served on a freshly baked multi-grain bun. and profit-driven factory farms most often do not make animal care, conditions and treatment a priority. Cramped stalls, lack of natural environment, sunlight and space, poor hygienic conditions, treatment and lack of quality of life is prevalent. The animals diet isn’t a natural one, and antibiotics are often used to stave off infections, as sickness and disease on these farms is an issue because of the size, crowding, and poor conditions. While organic and locally raised choices are much better, animals raised for food and deprived of life and family poses much of an ethical dilemma. Farming nowadays in our greatly toxic world, is far from what is used to be long long

ago. Going vegan definitely benefits the planet and the animals, our fellow sentient beings. A plant sourced natural diet is often much better for your body too. A whole foods balanced diet from Mother Nature can improve energy and vitality. Meat and dairy can be difficult to digest and are quite acid-forming. An overly acidic body creates disease and can lead to many health issues. Inflammation often results from consuming too many animal foods (processed foods as well). Want to get more alkaline? In addition to getting lots of nutrient-rich produce, be sure to include healthy fats vital for nerves and brain health like avocado, nuts and seeds, and the heart hero extra-virgin olive oil. Good protein sources to keep you strong and for rebuilding tissues are important too. Soaked and properly prepared legumes are good, sprouts are even better. Sprouted legumes, seeds, and grains are pre-digested, contain greater complete protein, are more alkaline, and are better assimilated. Soaking and sprouting eliminates antinutrients like phytates that

make it harder to assimilate some minerals. Digestion will be also be enhanced this way. owichan Valley authors Debbie Bateman, John Hadfield, and John Mowat Steven will read from their recent works, at the Old Firehouse Wine & Cocktail Bar in Duncan, on Monday evening, January 20. All are welcome to join us, for an evening of these local writers reading their work and discussing the craft. About the featured writers: Eating too much, eating not enough, having sex, not having sex, grief, drugs, aging parents, gender identity, and the last call of ovaries—there’s a lot going on in the bodies of women at mid-life. Debbie Bateman explores their secrets. John Hadfield is a singersongwriter, musician and prose writer. His stories and songs are reflections on life experiences and his journey to Self. They are deeply personal, sometimes humorous but always engaging.

Nature and spirit, loves, joys and losses, delight in beauty, and the importance of our being together - John Mowat Steven’s heart and his aspiration for beautiful writing. For the January 20 evening, doors will open at 7pm. Readings begin at 7:30. You can substitute with other veggies like asparagus, or substitute the potatoes for butternut squash, or whatever you have on hand. The most important thing to remember is to cut veggies in a similar size so they cook evenly. Prep Time: 20 Minutes Cook Time: 20 Minutes 12-15 Brussel Sprouts, trimmed and halved 1 whole Red Onion, Peeled and cut into large chunks 1 whole Red Bell Pepper, seeded and cut into large chunks 8 ounces, Mushrooms (any kind), quartered or halved depending on size 2-3 Carrots, cut into large pieces 2 Red Potatoes, cut into large chunks or 8 oz. fingerling potatoes halved 3 Garlic Cloves, minced Salt And Pepper, to taste 1 teaspoon choped fresh herbs (parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme) 1/4 Cup Mushroom & Sage Olive Station Olive Oil 1/4 Cup Olive Station Red Apple Dark Balsamic

Preparation

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Combine all the prepped veggies in a large bowl. Drizzle in the Mushroom and Sage Olive Oil, then season with salt, pepper, garlic and other seasonings of your choice. Toss to coat. Arrange on baking sheet (2 sheets if your veggies are really big!) , spreading the veggies out to give them room. Roast for 15 minutes, shaking the pans at least twice during that time. Toss and roast for an additional 5-10 minutes, until veggies are nicely roasted. While the veggies are cooking, simmer balsamic for about 15 minutes or until nice and thick. When veggies are done, drizzle with the Red Apple Dark Balsamic Glaze.

Chantel enjoys researching and helping people improve their sleep life

recently started sleeping with a weighted blanket after an ongoing struggle with falling and staying asleep. Weighted blankets have been on my radar for awhile, but I had never investigated far enough to fully understand how they could help me. Through my research, I discovered a wide range of people who swore by them, including people suffering from similar sleep troubles. Since starting to use one of these blankets I have experienced a dramatic improvement in my sleep quality. Here’s how it works. The weighted blanket drapes and contours your body as you sleep (to figure out the ideal weight of the blanket, calculate at approximately 10% of your body weight). It is designed to simulate the feeling of a gentle embrace, which has a calming effect on the nervous system and helps you reach deeper

relaxation...all great ingredients to getting a restful night’s sleep. Many believe this cocooning sensation can be described as similar to the secure feeling of being in the womb as a baby, and of our early years of being held in close contact with our parents. The importance of touch Touch is more important than most people might realize, especially for babies and young children. It is the first sense available to us after being born, even before we can open our eyes. Doctors have long understood that young children need gentle touch to support development (emotional, cognitive, and physical) and to encourage deeper connections with their parents. Skin to skin contact allows a child to feel protected. This comforting sensation of being hugged is familiar to young children, reminding them of their closeness to Mom while they were in the womb. Throughout history, our ancestors emphasized how important touch was, and made a point to keep babies in contact with another person at all times. In our current days, babies can often spend a lot of time away from their parent’s physical contact, in cribs, car seats, strollers, or

at day care. Touch deprivation in our early years may have a variety of effects as we age. A child that is lacking enough physical contact by a loving adult, may experience delays in development, moodiness and face greater challenges forming secure attachments with others in their life. Touch is a key part of supporting a child’s emotional growth and nurturing positive relationships between friends, family and peers. This is why many families are coming back to attachment parenting and finding more ways to incorporate touch.

Although we often focus on our other senses, touch does not become any less important as we age. We need it to continue developing throughout our whole life. Consensual physical contact helps us keep trust and security in our sights, and nurtures our continued emotional health. This allows us to maintain strong, trusting connections with the people around us. Touch is also important for relaxing our mind and body. Therapies such as reflexology, massage, craniosacral, and healing touch are widely used to de-stress and calm the nervous system. A weighted blanket can be utilized every night as its own form of touch therapy for everyone, from children to seniors. The benefits of sleeping with a weighted blanket: • Provides deep pressure stimulation, an encompassing gentle pressure on the body, promoting calmness.

• Cues the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that creates feelings of wellbeing and happiness • Helps increase melatonin production, the hormone that regulates sleep • Induces a feeling of security while decreasing anxiety • Nurtures ultimate relaxation and a peaceful state of mind • Creates a gentle cocooning feeling I am personally finding the most noticeable effects of sleeping with a weighted blanket are: • The weight has a grounding effect that eases me into deep relaxation. • I am falling asleep easily and quickly • I am not waking up as much during the night • I am less restless while I sleep • I wake up feeling more refreshed I have always believed that once babies stop sleeping with their parents, they cuddle stuffed animals to recreate that feeling.

Once they grow out of their stuffed animals they often form a deep attachment with their head pillow. The weighted blanket can become another beloved source of comfort as we grow up and also when we become adults. I am someone who grew up with attachment parenting, and I feel a similar sense of comfort and familiarity being surrounded by my weighted blanket. I would highly recommend trying one of these therapeutic blankets, if you are struggling with sleep issues such as mine. They are definitely worth considering.

The Medical Benefits of Wool

D

o you or a loved one suffer from asthma, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, eczema or bed sores? Wool can help in the relief of these and numerous ot her physical conditions. The natural healing properties of wool fibre are proven. Wool is extremely successful in healing and prevention and offers real relief for the many medical conditions and ailments caused by injury, illness and the stresses of everyday living. Wool fibre is primarily keratin, a protein that is present in our own skin and hair. This means that it is safe if trapped in sores or wounds. It works in harmony with our own bodies and will simply detach harmlessly along with a scab at the end of the healing process. Soul Comfort wool products provide cushioning, warmth, dryness and relief for pain or discomfort associated with numerous medical ailments. We offer a variety of products along with custom fit and specialty footwear products…. • Personal Comfort • Palliative Care • Home Health Care • Hospitals Wool is also considered a MIRACLE fibre used by hospice and palliative care centers. Asthma Dust mites are a common problem for people who have asthma. For these mites to

survive they need moisture and humidity. It is proven that dust mites DO NOT like sheep’s wool due to it’s ability to spreads out moisture, and then dry quickly. This makes wool an unfriendly environment for dust mites to live or breed. High Blood Pressure Sleep deficiencies, situational, environmental and emotional circumstances cause stress which also effects blood pressure. Sleeping in sheep’s wool reduces heart rate because wool naturally insulates keeping the body at comfortable temperatures. This reduces the body’s need to work hard in maintaining an ideal temperature. So our sheep wool will provide a more restful sleep. Menopause Wool keeps the body at a consistent temperature helping it counter menopausal hot flashes. Its ability to wick away moisture will also help to keep you warm, dry and comfortable for a great night’s sleep. Fraility (symptoms) The elderly greatly benefit from the added warmth and cushioning wool provides. It’s a natural insulator wicking away moisture from the body, providing dry warmth. Wool also relieves pressure, helping to reduce skin separation or tearing. When skin stays dry, skin stays strong. Cancer/ Chemotherapy Patients Many cancer patients receiving

chemotherapy experience reduced circulation. Whether awake or asleep, wool keeps you consistently warm without overheating, adding comfort, pressure relief and healing for aching bodies. Diabetics Sleep is imperative as a support aid for diabetics but is often overlooked. Wool provides a more restful sleep by maintaining normal body temperatures of 98.6 F which improves circulation, and allows the body healing time, correcting chemical imbalances and normalizing blood sugar levels (although insulin support may still be necessary for some diabetics). Wool breathes and is able to hold 30-40% of its weight in moisture, assisting in the prevention of bacterial growth, and promotes the healing of sores and ulcers.

cushioning which decreases many factors that lead to sores and ulcers. Wool is the solution for primary causes of skin breakdown, such as moisture, pressure and chaffing. There was a time when sheepskin was used regularly in hospitals for prevention and healing. But now in many cases due to cost– cutting, its been replaced with synthetic polyester fleece which unfortunately contributes to skin breakdown. Wool’s beautiful properties are absolutely necessary in alleviating preventable suffering in patients. Submitted by Anyes DeLaat

f I asked you the question, “What would you like more of in your life?”, would your answer be, money, love, time, peace, or…what? How about, “To feel good about myself.” Does that resonate with you? As a ‘61 Boomer who recently navigated menopause, I have sought natural relief from the physical, spiritual & emotional issues that come with being of this age. I’m

also well acquainted with the struggles that many (dare I say, most) women go through to feel “good enough” throughout life. My quest for self-acceptance and healing has led me down many paths and I now love where I am at. My favourite healing tool has become microcurrent. Now, you might be asking, “What does electricity have to do with feeling good?” Well, the cornerstone protocol in microcurrent treatments is Meridian Balancing, which involves measuring and graphing your energy channels and then stimulating several acupressure points on your body using microcurrent.

Our Coco-licious facial is specially designed to jump start your skin, and boost immunity...

$90

Love Your Reflection In 2020 This treatment balances and harmonizes your autonomic nervous system, plus other benefits. It is a total-bodyfeel-good treatment and each person responds according to their body’s needs. Microcurrent is holistic and extremely effective for reducing pain and inflammation, in addition to addressing a longer list of other situations which can hinder a person from feeling good in their own skin, like losing weight or quitting smoking. After being used to correct facial symmetry for Bell’s Palsy, microcurrent is becoming mainstream in the aesthetics industry as a treatment for rejuvenating the skin and muscles of the face, neck and décolletage. A nonsurgical face lift! As a provider of microcurrent treatments I have used myself as a test subject (and I am a tough sell, not to mention a research-aholic.) I can honestly say that microcurrent has changed not only my face, but my life.

Some of the benefits that I (and others) have experienced from having facial rejuvenation treatments are: whiter, more open & lifted eyes... improved skin density & clarity... reductions in fine lines, wrinkles & folds... lightening of age spots... lifting of cheeks, jowls & mouth corners... and more. I no longer cringe when looking in the mirror. Side benefits can include; diminished vertigo, and

improvements in eyesight, taste, sense of smell are often reported, amongst other things unique to each person. So how does microcurrent do all this good stuff? Microcurrent – a teensie weensie electrical impulse that mirrors your body’s natural, positive current – is used by a qualified practitioner to stimulate your natural healing and rejuvenation responses through several techniques. These techniques include using the microcurrent wands (I call them magic wands) to; soothe soft tissue and inflammation; trigger production of ATP (energy) for your metabolism to use for repair and regeneration; stimulate acupressure points; and retrain muscles through stroking movements. They all make you feel good! So, whether you are seeking to enhance feeling good about yourself through appearance, or something deeper than the skin you’re in, you may want to look into microcurrent treatments for yourself. Let Us Make Something Clear - Your Skin! Dr. Lyn Pascoe Viva Medical Aesthetics

Clear skin is something we would all love. These days, there are treatments available which can be customized for your skin type. One of my favourite treatments for the New Year is a Chemical Peel. What Is A Chemical Peel? Peels are one of the least invasive and most cost effective ways of treating a variety of skin issues including fine lines, sun damage, acne, and acne scarring with little to no down time after your treatment. The term ‘peel’ is simply used to convey the fact that we are sloughing off the top layer of skin to reveal the radiant, healthy skin underneath. Rather than physically scrubbing the skin, which can be quite irritating and abrasive, we use naturally derived acids that will do the work for us and give results that are smooth and even. What To Expect Hopefully, you will be able to feel the acids working. Light peels will feel warm and tingly for the first few minutes and then taper off.

The deeper the peel, the more you will feel. It is normal for your skin to be rosy or pink when you leave. This is an indication that there is more blood rushing to the surface, bringing with it more oxygen and nutrients to give you an even better result.

When Does The ‘Peeling’ Start? The ‘peeling’ will not happen right away. Nor will it happen all at once. Over the course of the week following your treatment, your skin will slowly and silently ‘micropeel’ as you go about your daily life. What you’re really going to notice is how hydrated, firm, and smooth your skin feels the day after your treatment. If you choose to have a stronger peel, you may notice a few visible flakes 3-5 days after, which can be remedied by using your favourite hydrating serum. Which Type Is Best For You? Your aesthetician can control how deep your peels go. Do you want something that will make your skin look smooth and radiant for a soiree you have that weekend? Or one that will treat deeper conditions like acne scarring and sun damage? The concentration of the acids, length of time the peel is left on for and time between treatments are all considered by your aesthetician in order to give you the results you are after.

Happy New Year!

ymphatic Release Treatment is a gentle stimulating fullbody massage, including groin lymph and breast tissue, that encourages the lymph movement through stimulation of both the surface and deeper underlying tissues. It works with the circulatory and lymphatic system to improve circulation, lymphatic flow and remove toxins from the body. What is the lymphatic system? It is a network of tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted material. The lymphatic system functions primarily to transport lymph, a fluid containing infection-fighting white blood cells, throughout the body. Lymph can only move in one direction—upward, toward the neck, where it re-enters the circulatory system via the subclavian veins. Our lymphatic system doesn’t have a “pump” so it depends on daily movement on our behalf to help shuttle lymph fluid around the body thru muscle contractions in the surrounding skeletal muscles. Vertigo

V

ertigo is a rotational dizziness, that is, a feeling that you are spinning or the world is spinning around you. It can be quite debilitating and often occurs with nausea, headache and tinnitus. Our ears are not just for hearing; they are also one of the major input sources for our sense of balance. As such, pathology in the ear is one of the major reasons for vertigo. Broadly speaking, our inner ear has two parts, the cochlea, which is responsible for our hearing, and the semicircular canals, which are partially responsible for our balance. These two parts of the ear serve quite separate functions but because they are connected and share fluids, some pathologies in the ear cause both vertigo and hearing problems. Meniere’s disease is one example of

such a pathology as it is due to the build-up of pressure of these shared fluids and causes vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus and a sensation of the ear being full. Other ear pathologies causing vertigo are restricted solely to the balance part of our ears. BPPV (positional vertigo) is caused by crystals becoming dislodged in the semicircular canals and sending signals to the brain that do not match the balance signals sent to the brain from the eyes or the feelings from our legs. Other ear-related pathologies that can cause vertigo include labyrinthitis (inflammation of the balance nerve), cholesteatoma (a growth in the middle ear), otosclerosis (fusion of the middle ear bones), perilymphatic fistula (a leakage of fluid from the inner to the middle ear), and acoustic neuroma (a benign tumor on the balance or hearing nerve).

Because vertigo can be due to reasons other than the ear, such as stroke, head trauma, side effects of medication, viruses etc., having an audiological evaluation is an important part of helping the physician or specialist

differentially diagnose the cause of vertigo. Terence Miranda is a Doctor of Audiology and the owner of Resonance Hearing Clinic

A

fallen tree should never die quietly, never mind who’s around to hear it. With the success of oneTree 2015 and oneTree 2017, the Bateman Foundation and Live Edge Design have once again partnered to exhibit oneTree 2019. The oneTree series celebrates the life and value of a single tree by inviting participating artists to create as much beauty from it as possible.

Georgia Collins Steve Doreen

Jacob Humphrey

One Tree Project

This year is the biggest portfolio yet, with more than 80 individual and original works. Each is unique in its interpretation and style, with artworks varying dramatically in scale and design – from furniture to musical instruments, wooden creatures to performancebased art and poetry – with a unifying theme of honouring the tree’s remarkable heritage. 24 of those artists call the Cowichan Valley home, including; Jennifer Lawson, Bev Thompson, Curtis Neufeld, and John Lore (oneTree founder and event partner). One of the oneTree 2019 participants, Bev Thompson, lived in Nepal, for almost six years developing her etching and printmaking practice at the studio of renowned artists Seema Sharma Shah and Uma Shankar Shah.

Since her return to Canada, she has settled on Vancouver Island and has benefited a great deal from the collaborative ethos of artists on the island. It’s a reminder of her very first inclination to translate reality into a representative vision through art. Retired now, Allen Horne was a pipe fitter and plumber during working hours; father to six children, and an avid hunter and painter when time permitted. He first inspired his daughter to pick up pencil and brush. “I grew up watching my father paint, he painted part time – never really showing his work anywhere,” she recalled. She remembers sketching, and occasionally asking if she could use some of his paint in her own works. But after she entered her teens, the love of painting went dormant in Yurgensen for many years. She married, worked, raised a family and moved – in 1992 – to the Cobble Hill home, where she

bad behavior by saying “he’s a rescue”. Could you imagine what that would to a child’s psyche? Can you imagine a parent even saying that? Yet people with second hand dogs use this reasoning often; and it’s not fair to the dog. It’s time to reign in that naughty behavior. It’s surprising what people accept from their dogs that they would never accept from another friend. Most of these things are just impolite, some of them are downright dangerous. A second hand dog can learn the skills that give her freedom; skills that let her have a life. Going for walks, getting groomed, visiting a vet, riding politely in a car, greeting people and other dogs without losing all her poop. Being “a rescue” may be a

Now that you have this dog, it is your responsibility to give her the best life you can provide. That does not mean letting her do whatever she wants. Dogs love reasonable boundaries. We all want to know where we can park our car, that’s a boundary. We want to know when to show up for work,

that’s a boundary. See how boundaries keep things in order and take the pressure off of you to make decisions? Dogs need a lot of decisions made for them and some of those may make your dog uncomfortable. Being occasionally uncomfortable is part of life (like us having a dentist wrist deep in our mouth). Being occasionally uncomfortable (not traumatized) also builds resilience as your dog learns that most new and scary things are not things to fight against. Her world grows; her confidence grows.

reason for behavior that your dog came with, but after six months, being “a rescue” is an excuse. There are definitely damaged dogs out there and you may have one. If you got your second hand dog after it is three years old and no work has been done on its mental state, you may be stuck with what you have. But there is a line between protecting your dog from danger and keeping your dog’s world small and unfulfilled.

How To Discover Amazing Trails In Cowichan Jacqueline Ronson is a community reporter for The Discourse Cowichan. jacqueline@ thediscourse.ca

T

he Cowichan Valley has incredible trails. As a reporter here, when I ask people what they love about living here, it’s the outdoor recreation opportunities that they mention most. But how do you go about discovering new trials? That’s a question The Discourse Cowichan, an independent local news source, recently heard from a reader of our email newsletters.

collaboration with the Cowichan Trail Stewardship Society. Online, there is a wealth of information on local trails. Government bodies that maintain parks and trails, including the CVRD, North Cowichan, Ladysmith and B.C. Parks, offer online maps and printable brochures. The CVRD, for example, offers online maps of Cobble Hill Mountain Regional Recreation Area, Osborne Bay Park, Spectacle Lake Park and Stoney Hill Regional Park.

David Minkow, reporting for The Discourse Cowichan, talked to Chris Istace of the Cowichan Trail Stewardship Society to get an answer. Here’s some of what he learned.

Books are still a great option for discovering trails. Here are some popular local titles, which you might find at local bookstores, in libraries and for sale online: Theo Dombrowski’s “Seaside Walks on Vancouver Island,” “Family Walks and Hike of Vancouver Island,” and “Popular Day Hikes Vancouver Island;” T.W. Paterson’s “Rails to Trails,” and “Historic Hikes, Sites & Sights of the Cowichan Valley;” and “Backroad Mapbooks for Vancouver Island.”

Bike shops and visitor centres are a great place to learn about local trails and ask for expert help. One resource available there is a printed, waterproof map of trails on Mount Tzouhalem and Maple Mountain, recently produced by North Cowichan in

Serving as a backbone to the Kindergarten program is the Sea-to-Sky Outdoor Classroom where students spend one day a week in an outdoor setting, free to safely explore the natural environment through B.C. Curriculum aligned playbased activities. Whether it is learning about life in a log or a tidal pool, pond dipping with experts in aquatic insects, or learning to build forest shelters, the Kindergarten students enjoy learning challenges that sharpen their critical thinking skills, physical agility, and confidence. Learning within the classroom integrates the development of the whole child, bringing opportunities to grow each student’s potential in the areas of language, mathematics, science and technology, expressive arts and design, personal socio-emotional, physical and spiritual. In the classroom, students gain confidence and a love of books through a blended program of daily story times, book-related activities, opportunities for storytelling and role-play, and

a strong phonics program. Student learning is supported by the educational use of classroom digital media and computer literacy activities. Students enjoy learning without limits through cross-grade activities where community building and becoming a steward of the environment is a natural outgrowth of such activities as Water Day or growing a “Lasagna Garden”. At DCS, daily physical activity and brain exercises are made easy by the wellequipped gymnasium and a large outdoor play area and adjoining playing fields. As part of Duncan Christian School’s focus on such faithbased values as integrity, compassion and inclusion, the Kindergarten program is happy to include many opportunities for community care projects, and learning from local artists and cultural leaders. The Waldorf (Steiner) way of teaching based on the understand-ing of the child as a three-fold being has become increasingly known in the mainstream and increasingly valued for its alterna-tive approaches to children’s learning and development. We carry a vast range of educational books, resources and supplies for parents, daycare providers, educators, practitioners and therapists.

the developing child, by Willi Aeppli.

“The responsibility of being a teacher arises in everyone’s life

… education concerns everyone.

In this simple gem of a book, Willi Aeppli takes us to the very core of the task of education. His is not a picture of senseless cramming and memorization but of service to each child and to humanity. All who seek an education make the greatest sacrifice, that of the self, all their gifts and their future. They have the full right to expect that this self will be returned as a stronger and truer self. Aeppli describes a curriculum that can make this possible.

Education in search of the Spirit By John F. Gardner:

The premise of this book is that a human being is a being of body, soul, and spirit… The first edition of this book was titled “The Experience of Knowledge” in response to a clear call for experience in education. Gardner ascertains that if the sole purpose of education is to acquire information, learning becomes dry, abstract, and deadening. To have meaningful consequence in a person’s life, he explains how “coming to know” must become an experience. To become true experience, it must speak out of, and toward, a student’s secret center - the spirit. Hence, the author affirms that authentic education is always in search of the spirit…. Here at the Freya-Sophia Waldorf store we are inspired by the work of Rudolf Stei-ner and committed to meeting the soul needs of our children and our community by providing books, toys, supplies, resources, classes, workshops, instruction, support, inspiration and conversation to all who visit our store.

Education Towards Freedom:

This book is a beautiful showcase of the work from schools worldwide by Frans Carlgren. When it appeared in 1976, there were around 100 Steiner-Waldorf schools throughout the world; now there are more than 1000 schools worldwide, as well as many separate play-groups and kindergartens. (including several here on Vancouver Island). During this time, SteinerWaldorf education has become increasingly known in the mainstream, and increasingly valued for its alternative approaches to children’s learning and development. The great breadth and rich-ness of the approach is what has attracted so many parents to its schools and books like Education Towards Freedom have helped them make the informed choice to take a dif-ferent route for their children. The book covers all aspects of Steiner-Waldorf education and divides it into the pre-school years, the first eight years (starting about age seven), and the last four years (from 14 to 18). There are also sections on the rhythm of the day, specific subjects, the use of textbooks, and school in the modern world. 43

2020 marks 24 years of teaching in the Cowichan Valley for beloved Yoga instructor Lilian Bianchi. “I got involved with Yoga at age 14, in my native Rio de Janeiro. My first boyfriend gave me the book “Autobiography of a Yogi” by Paramahansa Yogananda, which had a deep impact on me. He also took me to the Yoga Centre where he was practicing, and I met my first teacher, Vayuananda. For 3 years I attended weekly Meditation gatherings led by Vayu, before taking regular classes and learning Yoga poses (asanas).” smiles Lilian “At the Yoga Centre in Rio, I completed a 4 year Yoga Teacher Training Program, and started teaching in 1982. It just happened naturally. It was my love of Yoga that inspired me to become a teacher of this sacred art and way of life. When I immigrated to Canada in 1986, I continued my training in Vancouver and White Rock with Sandra Sammartino, who still is, to this day, my dear mentor.” For those considering starting a yoga practice in their lives, there are many benefits including: release of tension, flexibility and freedom of movement; physical and inner strength; increased breath capacity; increased flow of

energy (prana); deep states of relaxation; clarity of mind and openness of heart. “By cultivating a healthy body and clear mind we can more easily perceive the spiritual essence of who we are, and then also perceive the common essence we share with others, in spite of our differences.” shares Lilian “Yoga helps us to see who we are, our light and our shadow, to develop awareness, and ultimately embrace all parts of our being. Lilian’s classes provide a nurturing and encouraging atmosphere for students with different levels of ability to experience the healing benefits of Yoga. “My students are open and interested in the connection of Body, Mind and Spirit and my classes range from Beginner to Ongoing levels, always respecting individual needs and following the principles of alignment and awareness for a healthy and centred practice.” Namaste Yoga Winter Session runs from January 6 - April 9. Please visit www. namasteyoga.ca for class descriptions, schedule and locations.

Hellerwork Practitioner Melissa Brown

Alignment For A New Decade

W

hen one begins the process of Alignment, it affects not only your body, but also your mind, emotion and spiritual life. “When I am working on a client, I open up the fascia and release the restrictions that are held in the tissue. As this happens, the body begins an unwinding process that clients often notice begins to take place in their lives as well.” shares Melissa Brown, Hellerwork practitioner and somatic and spiritual counsellor. “When we are better aligned physically we are connected to an energetic line that grounds us to the earth and connects us to the heavens. Finding alignment in the body will often transpire to alignment on all levels of ones life.” “Often when people set intentions to change or make New Years resolutions what they are looking for is greater alignment in their life. Ways to feel more happy, more energetic and also to let go of old beliefs and patterns and habits. Using Hellerwork massage techniques, I help guide my clients, to feel into these emotions, patterns and beliefs. The deeper inquiry work, the more that the client will begin to understand the

unwinding process, creating more alignment within all areas of their life.”

As we enter the new year I decide it’s time to treat some of my chronic physical pains - stiff neck, tight shoulders, carpal tunnel that comes and goes… symptoms typical of one who works at the computer all day and many nights. Like many, I have learned to live with certain pains, accepting that it is all part of the job but before I become completely complacent I decide to turn to Melissa Brown for some relief. Melissa is known for always being up for the challenge of curing anyone’s chronic pain. After a brief check in about my needs and pains, I get ready and lie face down on fresh warm sheets that await. Melissa, a somatic counsellor and trained massage therapist, specializes in Hellerwork Structural Integration a body treatment created by former NASA aerospace engineer Joseph Heller. He describes it as a powerful system of body - mind - and movement - work designed to recondition your whole body to an optimal state of health and well being. With Hellerwork principals at the forefront, Melissa combines expert skills with strong confident hands to offer her clients a deeper, slower, more deliberate massage aimed at longer, lasting change. I close my eyes, face down as shea butter is warmed and applied to my areas of tightness and stiffness. Different from a regular massage, Melissa uses her hands to gently, but deeply follow unseen lines drawing

Judy Johnstone, Reiki Master 250-661-0192 www.hiddengemreiki.com from one end of the connective tissue to the other. She doesn’t knead and rub your body like other relaxation massages - she is deliberately looking to work at the aches and transform them slowly. A Hellerwork massage concentrates on the fascia and connective tissues rather than just the muscles. Shea butter is an essential part of her session, adding friction to enable her to deeply move the skin’s surface and what lies beneath with every pass of her hands. Rather than just smoothing over a large area, she rubs slower and deeper in a targeted area often using only fingers instead of whole hands. For those looking for something gentler and more relaxing, she is skilled and happy to oblige. However from my experience, her treatments are best for those looking for deep therapeutic results. If you have reoccuring chronic pain, working under Melissa’s Hellerwork hands will indeed transform it. With a roster of regular clients

that come to her here in Cobble Hill and her clinic in Victoria, she works regularly on neck and back problems, sciatica and frozen shoulder. “The root of the issues are often misalignments which can cause discomfort and pain in the body. It is successful for easing and eliminating chronic lower back or pelvic issues as well as neck, arms, foot, knee and leg pains. Its specialized methods can be applied to treat every section of the body. When your body comes into alignment within the field of gravity, chronic pain and tension dissipate. A comfortable sense of support replaces the stress and strain of carrying your body through life!” shares Melissa. I leave Valley View feeling blissfully lighter and pain free. or us gardeners, once the holiday season has passed, Spring has sprung, and regardless of what the weather is doing outside, our minds turn to sowing seeds. With a quick internet search, one can find a mere 118 Canadian vegetable seed companies to choose from (visit www.empressofdirt.net for the full list). How does a gardener navigate all this choice? So many seeds! So little time! Here are some helpful tips: Go to Seedy Saturdays: These events are a fantastic way to support smaller seed farmers and familiarize yourself with community horticultural organizations and non-profits. Vancouver Islands first Seedy Saturday is in Saanich on January 11th at the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific. Be sure to ask vendors and local garden club representatives lots of questions when you are there. I found one of my favourite paste tomatoes (‘Sheboygan’) thanks to the recommendation of a vendor at the Victoria Seedy Saturday. Window shop: When I first moved to Duncan, I poured over the the Salt Spring Seeds website. I probably filled up my ‘cart’ half a dozen times before I purchased any seed. One of my picks was Baikal Skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis), a medicinal perennial which thrives on neglect. It has now formed a sizeable clump in my garden, with beautiful blue flowers all summer long.

Window shopping online is a great way to learn about new vegetables, flowers and herbs, all from the comfort of your home. Try something new EVERY year: With about 391,000 plant species in the world everyone should try growing a new and unusual vegetable or flower. This year I tried growing luffa gourds. After growing four plants for eight months I ended up with one gourd (and it went moldy), but you can bet I’ll be attempting to grow this plant again next year. Try growing something you’ve never eaten before, something your friend recommended, or something you’ve always wanted to grow but have never attempted. Grow food you want to eat: If you let the twenty heads of lettuce you grow every Spring go to seed, but the peas you grow never make it to the freezer, then stick to peas. A lot of time, effort and resources go into growing vegetables so spend them wisely, and don’t let your vegetables go to waste. Understand the terminology: • Open-pollinated: These are varieties that if properly isolated from other varieties in the same plant species will produce seed that is genetically “true to type”. This seed will produce a plant very similar to the parent. If you are saving seed, look for open-pollinated seed. Heirloom varieties are named open-pollinated strains which either pre-date or are unaltered from the earliest open-pollinated breeding work (highmowingseeds. com).

• Hybrid: This is seed derived from two different openpollinated varieties from the same species. This seed generally carries desirable traits such as disease resistance and vigour. But if you like to save seeds, be aware that they may not come “true to type” (this is especially true for varieties marked F1). Growing plants from seed saves money and it is incredibly rewarding. Produce food you love, experiment with something new, learn from the failures, and have fun sowing some seeds! Favourite vegetable seed companies (shortlist): - B.C. Eco Seed Co-op - Full Circle Seeds - Salt Spring Seeds - Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds

bathing, and other potable demands, is that even possible? Questions such as “How much water can I collect?”, and “How much water do I need?”, which are in the wrong order, and “How much will it cost me?” are most popular. A RWH system is not an off-the-shelf purchase, each installation is unique. Demand uses vary between families, collection potential is different across regions, and site conditions determine how things are put together. To break it down, the simple questions ‘WHY?’ and ‘WHAT?’ are dealt with, in that order, in a feasibility study. It’s the same stepby-step format used for a single-family dwelling, for a large commercial site, or (once there are approvals in place) for potable use in a subdivision.

About Rainwater Harvesting (RWH)

W

ithout a doubt, RWH is the hot topic during drought periods, and a ‘wishlist’ item for many who are not really sure. While not rocket science, harvesting rainwater is an old practice, but in our modern world something of an enigma. Just how to go about it, anyway? First of all, why harvest rain at all? We live in the wettest part of the country – oh, yes, but we have that summer drought thing and need water for the garden. OK, so we put some barrels under the downspouts. Boy, they fill up fast, and spill over even. Wow, we can get a lot of water this way! Guess we could use bigger barrels, or a tank, but how big? And with so much water collected (OK, ‘harvested’ then), will it still be good when I need it? Is it even safe to use roof runoff for my garden? How about for flushing or laundry, which deplete the well far too quickly? And what about using rainwater for cooking,

But wait, there’s more…. Since water flows downhill, gravity is our best friend. Since rainwater is generally pretty clean, we want the best catchment and conveyance materials and system possible. Since water can be stored, we need to determine location, size, and type of tank. And since we know our end uses (the answers to ‘Why?’),

appropriate treatment can be added. At the Cowichan Valley Garden Club’s meeting on January 8, 7 PM at St John’s Anglican Church Hall in Duncan, 486 Jubilee St,

We’ve a whale of a good reputation!

he information in this article may shed light on how achieve and sustain your new years resolution. Maybe you want to lose weight, stop smoking, earn more money or have a better love life. Before another year goes by and you find yourself in the same place this time NEXT year, this information may help you. As a Hypnotherapist my clients come to me because they want specific results and they have a story as to how they have arrived in their situation. The common theme is that they have TRIED to do the thing that they say they want but have either not achieved it or been able to sustain it. My job is to help them DECIDE to become the person they want to be and identity their limiting sabotaging thoughts and behaviours that are getting in the way of their success. Once that has been done, the process of reprograming their mind can begin. The new programs are going to create a sustainable desire to achieve the results they want. When I give presentations or meet my clients for the first time, I teach them about how their mind works and the difference between their conscious and subconscious mind. When a person understands this, then a new outcome story can be created and used to reprogram the mind. The old limiting beliefs that were often formed in their childhood, can now be overwritten with new positive helpful beliefs to enable the adult to get what they want. People are sometimes

confused as to what they want. They tell me they don’t want to be fat, they don’t want to smoke, they don’t want to procrastinate, they don’t want to be lonely, bored, sick, tired or broke. None of these things are what they want and since the job of the powerful subconscious mind is to deliver what ever it is told over and over again, that is what it delivers - automatically. The next few steps are how I help my clients identify what is it they want and break this patten. These are the steps to identify what your want and reprogram your own mind. 1) Get clear on what you want (Not what you don’t want). 2) Hand write out a statement of what you WANT. (Use the 5 senses as descriptive words) 3) Use your imagination to build up the positive sights, sounds, feelings of what you just wrote out 4) Seek evidence that your goal/intention/desire/ is possible. 5) Drift off to sleep at night repeating in your mind what you want 6) Wake up in the morning repeating in your mind what you want 7) Notice the positive changes in your feelings/moods/ emotions when you think of what you want. Would you like to watch a video about the subconscious mind or the above process? Visit www.FlourishHypnosis. com Helena Jehnichen Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist 604-377-3190

dissonance as we live in humanity’s current chapter of endless change. As old paradigms are continually shed with the emergence of new ones, we are invited to uplevel our energetic immunity so, together, we can carry the weight of our shared growth. We are being asked to strengthen in new ways as we face new challenges. Just like a muscle, our inner strength functions best when hydrated, flexible, and stable with the ability to relax. Inner strength & energetic immunity are also nourished when we cultivate grounded embodiment, creativity, connection, nervous system regulation and healthy boundaries. In order to dance with what we collectively & personally face, I believe it’s crucial to uplevel our immunity on all levels so we can attend to life in the healthiest way possible. conflict, unprocessed trauma, the daily news, environmental loss and the financial dance can be nothing short of overwhelming. Alchemical Activities: • Deeply breathe fresh new energy into your core and exhale what needs to go. Breathe and feel into the truth of your experience to digest emotion and harness your power. Slow down. • Ground and gather your threads of focus. Feel the weight of your body being held up by the ground. Imagine, sense or feel your roots anchoring you into your current location between earth and sky. • Body Scan. Use your senses, one at time (look, listen, feel,

smell, taste), to arrive in your present place and time. Focus your mind on feeling and noticing sensations in your body and breathing into them with curious, compassionate attention. • Dance and shake it out. Gently shake your body from your feet to your jaw to your mind! Dancing and shaking opens energy pathways, releases rigidity and creates space for new movement inside and out. Literally, give your head a shake (gently). • Sound purge and sound it out. Gather what is rising within you and release a wild sound, song, cry, yell, moan or sigh. Explore the power of your wild voice with care. • Use your senses to receive nature’s medicine while resetting your energy with the elements. Forming safe relationships with plants can support your natural intelligence, help to rewild your awareness and harmonize imbalances on all levels. Animal friends are super helpful too. • Get creative and express yourself into art, music, dancing, hiking, yoga, exercise or anything that supports your safe therapeutic expression. • Reach in and out for support. Connect with a loved one or health professional if needed. Nurture yourself by getting lots of rest to integrate your experiences.
