rganic whole grains such as wheat, spelt, rye, quinoa, amaranth and millet are loaded with health boosting antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Cooking grains and adding them to your meals, as an addition to the main or as a delicious side dish is a great way to introduce them into your daily food plan. Add cooked grains to stews and soups, or mix into your favourite salad. Here are three great grains to get you started. Continue reading for basic cooking directions and refer to our chart for the required amount of liquid and cooking time. Spelt – A nutty tasting grain that is very high in protein. Gluten in spelt is easier to digest, so may be acceptable to those with mild sensitivities. Spelt kernels are large, a long soak will speed up the cooking process. Add to your favourite chili recipe as a meat alternative Quinoa – Touted as a superfood, this small seed has become increasingly popular. With a high ratio of protein to

carbohydrate, quinoa is a great way to fill up when you are limiting your portions. A great replacement for rice as a side dish or add to soups during the simmering process.

Millet – High in minerals, millet is a great grain for those who require more magnesium in their diets. Toasting the small kernels before cooking will enhance the flavour. Add cooked millet to your favourite bread or biscuit recipes. Basic Cooking Directions – Rinse and drain the grain kernels. Place in saucepan with the recommended amount of water, broth or stock. Add ½ to 1 teaspoon of salt, if desired. Cover saucepan and bring to a boil. Turn heat low and simmer for required amount of time (refer to cooking chart). Lift lid and check for tenderness, cook for longer or add more liquid, if required. Once fully cooked, allow to rest for 5 minutes before serving. Come learn more about these and other great grains at Scoops Natural Foods, where you can save 20% off all our bulk grains, lentils, beans, rice and oats for the month of January! A great opportunity to add a few different grains to your pantry.

veryone loves an excuse to visit Cowichan Bay at any time of year. On the water the boats are always peacefully bobbing, the visiting sea lions are always a thrill to watch. Now there’s one more reason. Phil Ratzlaff’s fish tacos! A plan that had been brewing for a number of years Get Phil’d Up, located on the waterfront of Cowichan Bay is a culmination of Philip’s passion for cooking, his inspiration from his mother and his travels around the world. Jude and Phil began with a mobile

Get Phil’d Up food kiosk on the dock, but with the great demand for year round offerings they have now installed themselves permanently with indoor seating for the cold weather months. A perfect stop for locals on the go, Phil’d Up offers a locally sourced menu with meats from Graham at the Duncan Butcher, organic breads from next door at True Grain, fresh delicious chicken from Island Farmhouse Poultry and Island Farms dairy product. His whole delicious menu is made with love and Phil adds a special touches to everything he serves. My children love the bonus chocolate finger they receive in their ice cream cones! “We heard that the Bay needed a good coffee and breakfast place so we Phil’d the niche and now serve Drumroaster coffees, and a great ALL DAY breakfast that we serve along with lunch and dinner specials.” smiles

Phil “Our food offerings have evolved through people who order from us. The fish tacos came about right from the start as people would interrupt while we were building the kiosk, and request the fish tacos.” laughs Jude “It took a bit of time to get the sauces right and source fabulous corn tortillas, which are Island made in Victoria.” In their bigger space, Phil and Judy now offer gluten free brownies, daily fresh baked muffins and and a specialty Affogato - Vanilla ice cream with hot espresso poured over top - which is quickly becoming a signature favourite. Another favourite winter dish is Phil’s savoury corned beef hash and for vegetarians, their gourmet veggie lasagna plate sells out fast. Call ahead for easy take out service if you’re on your way home. See you there! 1725 Cowichan Bay Rd. 250 466 4667

hawnigan has had a challenging year and the community has been very busy with our efforts to stop the dumping at the contaminated landfill at the south end of our lake. There is always a silver lining to adversity, and for Shawnigan that silver lining is the cohesiveness that we have developed as a community.

Rachel Allen 250 882 4198

There are many new and lasting friendships that have developed as we all work together to try to protect our lake and out watershed for future generations. I am humbled and amazed by the tight knit community that we have become, and I know that this connection and closeness will help us to achieve great things long into the future. Recently, one of the longest standing goals of the Shawnigan community was achieved with the acquisition of Old Mt Baldy, which is now and forever a protected 250-acre park. The purchase of this park - achieved through fundraising efforts in the community along with the CVRD Shawnigan Parks budget - is a clear statement about what we desire as a community: protection of the beautiful land and lake that is the heart of Shawnigan, and a focus on the exceptional recreational opportunities that we have to offer, including hiking, cycling and swimming.

I am grateful to be the Director for Shawnigan Lake, and I look forward to 2016 as a true turning point for this wonderful community. We have demonstrated that we are determined, tenacious, and committed, and that at the same time we are kind, generous, and compassionate. We have demonstrated that if we put our minds and collective efforts together, we can indeed move mountains. Stay strong, Shawnigan, and know that we have a glorious and healthy future ahead of us. Together, let’s look forward to the best year yet for Shawnigan Lake. Sonia Furstenau is the CVRD Director for Shawnigan Lake, and a long time advocate for social and environmental justice.

At CVAC, we love this idea. There’s the creative spark and there’s the getting lost in the process of bringing it to life. So we are asking our members to create drawings and we are inviting the Valley to get lost in the process of colouring them. Rocky Creek Winery Wild Blackberry

To take the chill off the winter months. After a hard day have a sip of our wild blackberry. It starts as a port but finishes with a drier richness to it. It has a clean rich blackberry flavour where a plate of cheese works so well with it. It is a higher alcohol as a sipper wine but it’s not fortified and unoaked so the luscious blackberry comes through. This is fantastic with a sharp cheese or blue cheese, chocolate or even a wonderful sausage. Our blackberry is our WOW factor because it`s so versatile and unique. We suggest and use it as a port but you can also treat it like a sherry or if you like, mix it in cocktails, may we suggest a gin and tonic with the wild blackberry and a sprig of mint. I call it a Black Shadow. Or have it half and half with kahlua for a Cafe Black.

he cold weather and low humidity levels of winter result in dry air, which steals moisture away from the skin. Freezing winds redden the skin. Indoor heat further robs the skin of moisture, as do hot showers or baths. When just washing your face, choose lukewarm water to avoid stripping your skin’s natural oils away.

I

n the winter months, I seek out warmth. Saunas, steams, warm baths… Recreation is at a minimum and my body feels the aches deeper and longer. Skin is drier and my favourite yoga poses are the heat generating ones. A new discovery for me, but an Ayurvedic one that has been around since ancient times is an Abhyanga, the Sanskrit word for “oil massage”. A luxurious, blissful, full body experience this soothing warm oil treatment was used in ancient times as a daily ritual for maintaining overall health and well being.

Abhyanga - ancient ayurvedIC oil massage

With less than a handful of certified Ayurvedic practitioners on Vancouver Island appointments are sought after, but well worth the wait. Ananda Ayurveda, in Cowichan Bay offers a complete menu of Ayurvedic Healing including counselling, nutrition, astrology, yoga and massage. Operated by Asrael, her specialized training began in India and continued in California where she returns annually as faculty member of New World Ayurveda. Each treatment begins with a cleansing foot bath and a short pulse diagnosis where layers of body and energy imbalances are read through your skin and bones to identify areas in need of healing. Asrael identifies my needs as nourishing, peace and openness. Oils used are a mix of certified organic, wildcrafted, and small farm pesticide free “organic”. “Bala Ashwaganda oil and an Ayurvedic Pitta blend that includes rose, sandalwood, amla and lotus all in a base of organic sesame oil.” she smiles “ The treatment begins with anointing the hands, feet and head to stimulate smaller chakra points. “In Ayurveda we encourage healing on all the layers of our being - Body, Mind and Spirit.” Asrael explains “ We work on the entire body to allow every part that is holding on to anything come to the surface

and be transformed.” Typically untouched, attention is also given to the chest and belly areas. “In Ayurveda digestion is key to proper health, so work on the belly and the emotional heart is important to open the doors of deep healing. Every inch of my body is feathered in light oil applied with swift clearing and circular strokes to nourish the skin, cleanse the lymph system, tonify the muscles and clear the chakras and pathways of prana. The treatment also stokes digestive fire and helps clear stress, insomnia, anxiety and emotional blocks. “Many of my clients will just come for a nice relaxing experience - and leave with a profound shift in their awareness. Winter is Vata Season in Ayurveda (Space and Air), so it is naturally the driest time of the yearly cycle for us, even here on the wet west coast, we live with heat sources that are drying to our entire body. Abhyanga balances vata and nourishes the entire body. The amount of oil used in the massage (1/2 cup - 1 cup) is like food for our skin cells, and not only moisturizes the skin but offers nutrients through the herbs that are in them. The skin is the largest “organ” of our body, so as we nourish the skin we nourish all aspects of our whole being. The oil moves through all of the tissue layers in the body, and is absorbed to the smallest cell. As this happens it replenishes the lymph system and blood system which also supports skin.” If you are looking for something new to soothe your whole tired body and dry winter self - consider a 90 minute hot therapeutic, ancient Ayurvedic massage. www.anandaayurveda.com Submitted by Sheila Badman

WINTER SKIN CARE 101 In our Canadian winter, your skin is exposed to a variety of weather conditions, including frigid temperatures, cold wind, reflected sun, and driving rain. If you travel to warmer climates during our chilly winters, your skin could be exposed to intense heat, drying winds, and bright sun. The basics of skin care however are the same during the summer and winter. IF YOUR SKIN LOOKS GOOD YOU LOOK GOOD. Taking care of your skin on a daily basis is an essential part of your health and well-being. The great news is that good skin care does not need to be complicated or expensive – it just needs to be effective! THE BASICS Skin care should be based on these simple steps: 1. Cleanse /Exfoliate 2. Moisturize 3. Protect 4. Treat THE MORNING CLEANSE EXFOLIATE Do this every morning and use a PH balanced, high quality cleanser (not drying soap).

THE MORNING MOISTURIZE AND PROTECT Do this every morning too! Since there are many different kinds of moisturizers, consider your skin type when choosing a product. In general, if you have rosacea or sensitive dry skin you would want a heavier product. Lighter products are great for normal or oily skin. It is essential that your moisturizer include a sunscreen or sunblock. This helps prevent sun damage and helps maintain a youthful tone and texture. Please note that there is an important difference between sunscreen and sunblock. Sunscreen is a filter only while sunblock (as it’s name implies) is a block. Sunblock typically contains zinc oxide, which prevents most of the damaging UVA and UVB rays from penetrating your skin. So, during the winter or the summer, if the sun is shining, or even managing to filter through the clouds, you need to be using sunblock. THE EVENING CLEANSE / EXFOLIATE AND TREAT Do this every night. Just like in the morning, use a PH balanced high quality cleanser. Bedtime is the best time to use an exfoliating and rejuvenating product to treat your skin

because all the work is done at night while you sleep. The product you require depends on your skin type (normal, rosacea, acne/oily or melasma). Normal skin responds well to alpha hydroxy acids, glycolic, retinol, or retin. Rosacea requires gentler products like mild glycolic or vitamin C serum and cream. Products that contain rosehip and licorice are also gentle on sensitive skin. Acne and oily reacts well to salicyclic acid, retin, benzoyl peroxide and glycolic acid. Melasma is unique type of skin where deep pigment occurs after exposure to sunlight and in response to female hormones. This type of skin, needs retin, hydroquinone, vitamin C, and kojic acid. As you can see, it is important to know your skin type. A knowledgeable skin care professional can help you determine your specific skin type. Having this information could save you spending money on products that are not going to deliver the results you are hoping for.

are hoping to add to their look with more color. MINERAL MAKEUP This type of makeup consists of pure mineral ingredients, which are both anti-oxidant and antiinflammatory. This means that they are treating your skin while they provide cover and colour. Many also contain extra SPF. They come in a variety of colors for your skin tone. I highly recommend Mineral Makeup. A consultation with a specialized makeup consultant will be helpful in getting you the look you are seeking. TREATMENTS In all seasons, but especially in winter, skin will benefit from a deeper exfoliating and moisturizing treatment. The Hydrafacial MD is my go to treatment for a deep cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing treatment. Medical grade products are used to achieve a deeply cleansed, glowing skin. Products can be added for anti ageing, lightening browns, and decreasing reds. This is a treatment that can be done monthly. After the treatment, your skin feels healthy deeply cleansed and ready for your next adventure.

MAKEUP Now that you have a great skin care regime, you can add to this with good quality makeup to enhance skin tones and color.

The experienced and knowledgeable skin care professionals at Viva Medical Aesthetics are available to help you develop a personalized plan for your skin.

n organic winter facial is one of the most pleasant ways to prevent premature ageing of skin. You lie in relaxation while your accumulated dead skin cells are removed with rich fruit, vegetable and mineral based masques. A perfect way to spend a day during the coldest, dampest and driest months of the year. Green spa owner, Eva Walker of Soul Escape offered us a few tips on winter skin care. “Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate” she replied “While most of us are aware that regular exfoliation scrubs can slough off the surface layer of dry and dead skin cells, the addition of powerful super foods and anti-oxidants can provide benefits too.” As winter approaches Eva gets ready to help clients beat the winter skin blues by bringing extra specialty organic beauty products for exfoliation and

moisturizing. A facial at Soul Escape begins with lying in a warm and relaxing spa room listening to ocean waves crest and fall. Warm cloths prepare the skin for cleansing and gentle exfoliating. Trained to the highest standards in the beauty industry, the facials at Soul Escape includes the décolletage, the upper part of a woman’s torso, comprising of her neck, shoulders, upper back and above the chest, not just the face area. Eva emphasizes that these areas are important to overall facial health. As each client’s skin has different needs, each treatment is modified to allow extra time for the removal of accumulated dry skin. These facials also work to stimulate the lymphatic drainage system and dislodge toxins that accumulate in the winter to help reduce stress and digestive problems.

WINTER FACIALS TO SOOTHE THE SKIN Deliciously scented with names like Sour Cherry Masque, Chocolate Mousse Hydration or Hibiscus Calendula organic Eminence potions always smell like a delicious getaway. As masques set in to help clear toxins and serums deeply penetrate to improve skin texture, Eva quietly and expertly gets the next creams ready. Hot soothing face cloths are used between every sequence of the facial to wipe away product with warmth. Skilled extractions, for those who need them are also offered to clients with acne or blemishes. During the 65 minutes of pure bliss - cleansing, exfoliating, extractions and two masques will have been applied to the face, eye, lip and neck area. In addition arms, shoulders, upper back and hands will also be pampered

with Hungarian massage and moisturizers. “Not only does your skin shine softer and brighter but you are left feeling uplifted and re-energized.” smiles Eva. I know the end is near when balm is applied to my lips like a final citrus kiss. To book your winter facial call 250 748 2056. For more information visit www.soulescape.ca.

uring the dry winter months Diane, owner of AhZenya Spa in Duncan cannot stress the importance of exfoliating regularly, but not over exfoliating. “Sloughing off dead skin cells helps your skin renew itself and give off a healthy glow.” says the former teacher of prestigious Blanche MacDonald Fashion, Esthetics and Make Up Centre in Vancouver. “Don’t let the overcast winter days fool you into thinking you can skip sunscreen. Shield your skin from the suns damaging rays by applying UVA/UVB protection daily-rain or shine all year round and don’t forget to protect your eyes and the delicate skin underneath with sunglasses.

The products that I was using were good at caring for, but not repairing my skin in a way I needed. Feeling my next option was to visit the dermatologist, I was not prepared to make that commitment.” She enquired amongst other professionals in the industry and was led

Peace on Earth

I

wish for peace and a Happy New Year for all beings in 2016 and beyond. Yet, I know that some years are more difficult than others. Sometimes life is hard and we suffer. But healing is possible and better is always an option. Thankfully there are inspiring stories of people who have overcome. Nelson Mandela and Rick Hansen come to mind. But some of us get stuck. Sadness, anger, grief, or self-loathing colour our lives and become our state of being. It takes over and negatively impacts our health and the people we love. Sometimes we are paralyzed by our emotions or we harmfully act out and regret it later. When it gets to be crazy like this what is always available to us at any moment is a deep breath - specifically a mindful breath into our bodies. Peace activist and Buddhist teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh calls this “coming home” because it brings our minds back to our bodies. When

we mindfully breathe we are able to notice our present state. When there is tension and pain we can breathe into it and hold it with tenderness and compassion. When we exhale we free this tension that keeps us stuck. This simple practice has the power to heal our suffering. Each mindful inhale and exhale fortifies a habit that connects us to our limitless potential for joy and happiness. To practice, breathe deep into your belly and acknowledge your emotion, “I breathe in and acknowledge my judgement”, for example, and then fully exhale, “I breathe out I release my judgement.” Thich Nhat Hanh teaches that “anything embraced by the energy of mindfulness will undergo a transformation”. Practice mindful breathing for a few breaths and then notice if/when there is a shift. Practice for a few days and notice if you are more peaceful. Practice for a few weeks, a few months and notice if you are calmer, healthier or happier. Practice for a year and then notice the quality of your life.

y Grandfather once told me that Beauty cannot be measured or proven, yet is one of the things in life that is truly real. How can one actually verify that something such as a silky silver moonrise, or a chorus of melodic laughter from the grandchildren, is authentically “beautiful”? Knowing Beauty is not a matter of the mind, but one of the heart, of the soul. Just as Love, Bliss, and Happiness do, real Beauty transcends absolute definition, yet can be known deeply in our Hearts, and is experienced by each of us in our own unique ways.

yellow dock, plantain, and Oregon grape root, to name a few. Alterative herbs work to gradually alter the body’s process of metabolism to help to clear out metabolic waste, and support the optimal function of the digestive, respiratory, circulatory, reproductive, urinary, musculoskeletal, integumentary, and nervous systems. Dandelion, along with the other herbs mentioned above, is a key ingredient in one of our tinctures that we make from fresh organic herbs that has been created specifically for cleansing. Along with its ability to clear out waste and toxins from the liver and kidneys, dandelion is a superfood that is rich in vitamin C and high in anti-oxidants. Dandelion also works to regulate blood sugar and insulin levels, balance cholesterol, increase immune system function, and is rich in phytonutrients that defend against cancer. It grows abundantly here at Folki Herb Farm, and is easy to find everywhere in the Valley!

return to school! Too much cortisol can cause the collagen in the skin to break down, which can increase wrinkles and sagging. Exercise actually supports the production of collagen, helping to keep your skin firm, supple, and elastic.

Acne Relief Elevated cortisol levels are linked to increased sebum production, which means more acne breakouts. Regular exercise also boosts circulation, nourishing your skin, bringing more blood flow and oxygen to it, helping draw toxins out of the body. Plus, all that sweating cleans out the pores of congested skin. Working out, especially when using natural movement patterns and functional, totalbody exercises, corrects the hormonal imbalance that can cause adult acne.

How To Give Yourself The Natural Fitness Advantage In 2016

T

here are lots of reasons to exercise. For some it’s because you booked a beach vacation or over-indulged during the holiday season, while others are focused on staying healthy. No matter what your motivation, we can all agree that there are benefits to exercising . But there’s another payoff: healthy skin and hair, along with other beauty rewards. Read on and learn more about the skin and beauty rewards that come from regularly working up a sweat. Instant Glow During the winter months, your skin can appear dull. When you get your heart pumping from aerobic exercise, you’re supplying your skin with a nice dose of oxygenated blood, making your skin look great! Wrinkle Reduction Exercising also helps maintain healthy levels of the stress-related hormone cortisol. Cortisol levels are often higher during the winter, especially around the holidays, or when the kids

Healthier Hair The improved blood flow that results from exercise helps keep your hair stronger and healthier too. This blood, which is full of nutrients, stimulates the hair follicles and promotes growth. Exercise is also a big stress reliever and reduced stress means your hair is less likely to be brittle or fall out.

Move Instinctively Learn to move as you did as a kid or like animals do. What could be more fun that walking on your hands or swinging from ring to ring? The best way is start off with the basics and progress over time to optimal performance. Natural movement fitness takes the traditional model of getting in shape (hours on spent on cardio or “doing the circuit” of strength machines) and flipping it upside down, using a variety of “old school” fitness moves and combining them with natural movement patterns like running, crawling, rolling, climbing and jumping to make exercise fun, challenging and very time efficient. This style of exercise helps balance your hormones, especially during the darker winter months, when our bodies are more inclined to feel sluggish. In fact, it’s proven that regular exercise actually gives you more energy! Practice Core Strengthening and Dynamic Movements at every workout Most people think of their core simply as abdominal muscles, but it is much more than that. The “core” of the body includes the hips, the waist, the entire spine, shoulders, and neck. All of these areas or sections of the body have the opportunity to collapse on every movement and it is imperative that to teach the body how to maintain alignment throughout all movements,

What’s the best type of exercise? As for the best type of exercise for your skin, all exercise will improve circulation and reduce stress, but in our opinion it’s wise to work in harmony with your body, using natural movements in the way it was designed to work.

increasing your reflexive stability and reactive core strength. An example of a loss of reflexive stability and reactive core is slipping on ice or mud and not falling but pulling your groin muscles instead. Utilizing natural body movements in a variety of directions (forward, back, up, down, left right) on both one and two legs, combined with specific exercises such as planks and segmental rolling, can greatly improve your both your reflexive stability and reactive core strength. Be self reliant, but don’t feel like you have to go it alone Being self reliant is more than just doing things for yourself, it’s a mind set. To achieve your goals, it’s going to take hard work, determination, discipline, and the will to fight off complacency. Seek out a coach, trainer or friend, who will give you the support and teach you the skills that are needed to perform better, eat healthier, restore your body, and achieve things you never thought you could. Being accountable to someone else can help keep you on track. ow many readers know that one of North America’s snowiest mountains is located just 2 hours north of the Cowichan Valley? Mount Washington Alpine Resort has long been recognized as one of the world’s deep snow capitals. The resort is bordered by Strathcona Provincial Park, BC’s oldest provincial park, to the west and the deep blue waters of Georgia Strait to the east. The views of the Pacific Ocean from the top of the mountain are second to none. This seaside location, with the help of some classic orographic precipitation, deliver the resort’s epic snowfall. Mount Washington averages 11.5 metres (over 38 feet!) per winter season. This year marks a fresh start with new owners and brings many exciting changes to the resort, including the implementation of snow making. In our family, we have all levels - and Mount Washington’s terrain is ideal for all of our abilities.. Five alpine lifts and five Magic Carpets serve over 1700 acres of ski and snowboard terrain. Beginners have Easy Acres, one of the easiest places to learn to ski and snowboard in North America, and travel up the mountain in style

isten to the sound of your brain to improve sleep? Brainwave Optimization® is a neurotechnology that uses brainwave activity to generate music-like tones, which in turn supports the brain’s ability to achieve deep states of relaxation. Non-invasive sensors are placed on the scalp to read brain rhythms at extremely high-resolution. This brainwave activity is translated by computer software and played back through earbuds in real time. From this state the brain tends to reorganize its own rhythms on its own terms using the brain’s feedback, helping it to operate more efficiently. From there you and your brain can produce greater well-being, enhanced performance and often other positive experiences including improved sleep. Sleep helps your brain work properly. While you’re sleeping, your brain is preparing for the next day. It’s forming new pathways to help you learn and remember information. Whether you’re learning math, how to play the cello, or how to perfect your golf swing, sleep helps enhance your learning and problem-solving skills. Sleep also helps you pay attention, make decisions, and be creative. Studies show that sleep deficiency alters activity in some parts of the brain. Insomnia is associated with a significant impact on health and wellness. If you’re sleep deprived, you may have trouble making decisions, solving problems, controlling your emotions and behavior, and coping with change.

Sleep deficiency also has been linked to depression, suicide, and risk-taking behavior. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. Insomnia becomes a vicious cycle. The less we sleep, the more we think our sleep is impaired. As we lose control of sleep, we become less able to deal with stress, which further hinders restorative sleep. Brainwave Optimization supports the brain to regain balance across the hemispheres that it has lost due to stressors and mental, physical, or emotional trauma. Each session builds on the last until we see balance return through graphs and images on the screen. The process is pleasantly relaxing. One of my favourite magazines, Brain World, published a wonderful article on sleep, brainwaves and Brainwave Optimization: http://brainworldmagazine. com/your-brainwaves-onsleep/ If you enjoy delving deeper into science, Wake Forest School of Medicine completed a randomized sleep study using Brainwave Optimization showing statistically significant results: http://www.wakehealth. edu/Research/Neurology/ HIRREM/Research/ Completed-Projects.htm

DBIA: Any funny grooming stories to share? Shiela: I wear one of those white paper masks when I blow-dry the dogs to protect myself from the dander, and one little dog somehow managed to grab it with his paw, pull it back with the elastic straps stretched out then let it go. It was pretty funny when it snapped back. DBIA: What do you like best about your downtown location? Shiela: That it is located in an interesting and unique building in a unique area of Duncan. computer on while you are using it - not only do you save power by shutting down or putting your computer on stand-by mode when not using it, but you also stop the airflow (and thus the dirtflow) through it. Of course, no matter how careful you are, your computer will get dusty and you will want to clean it. If you have a notebook, you’ll notice that there is a small fan on the bottom usually near the back. You can use canned compressed air (about $10 a can) to blow out the dust. You should do this while the computer is powered off. You can use the compressed air to clean the keyboard and also the notebook’s screen (the same method as if you were cleaning a pair of expensive sunglasses).

Time To Clean Your Computer!

I

n this day and age nearly all homes and businesses have a computer or two that are often used for several hours each day. While most of us are familiar with how to use a computer, we tend to forget that they are machines and require maintenance to keep them running in good order. Computers are air-cooled and the air in your house circulates through them to keep the components cool. If you see dust around your house, you can be assured that there is going to be plenty of it inside your computer as well. It is essential to provide proper cooling to the circuitry as overheating may make your computer unstable and even permanently damage the components. Your primary defense should be keeping the area (and air) around your computer clean. Also, you should only have the

Desktop (tower) computers require you to shut them down, disconnect all connections and remove the cover. It may seem a daunting task at first, but if you take a good look you’ll probably see that all you have to do is remove a few screws to open the cover. Do not disconnect anything inside, just walk outside with your computer and blow out the dust accumulations you see. Generally if the inside looks clean, it is clean.

nternational Guitar Night (IGN) is an inventive evening of contemporary guitar music from around the globe. The performance at the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre is on Thursday, January 21 at 7:30 pm.

World’s premier touring guitar festival is back in Duncan

IGN is the world’s premier touring guitar festival. This musical treat has been so popular over the years, we had to bring them back to kick off our 2016 season with a bang. Each show brings together the most interesting and innovative acoustic guitarists to exchange musical ideas in a concert setting. This will be a dynamic evening of contemporary guitar music that is “completely spellbinding,” says the Evening Post. For 16 years, IGN founder Brian Gore has invited a new cast of guitar luminaries to join him for exceptional evenings of solos, duets, and quartets that highlight the dexterity and diversity within the world of acoustic guitar.

Lulo has expanded on the legacy of his grand-uncle Django with Latin-flavored rhythms and melodies. Mike’s lightning-speed and deft tapping and percussion were among the highlights of the 2014 IGN tour. Andre is a master of many styles from flamenco to swing to modern ballads and he is a frequent collaborator with Lulo in Germany. This popular evening of music will showcase each player’s unique performance style and is one of the most important showcases for contemporary finger stylists. How We Can Help Syrian Refugees

L

ast month, the Cowichan Valley welcomed the first Syrian family to our community. It is the start of an anticipated wave of refugees to arrive in our community over the next several months. The Cowichan Intercultural Society (CIS) is leading the community’s response to settling and integrating Cowichan’s newest residents. We have seen an overwhelming outpouring of support in this community, including lots of questions, such as “how can I help?” We’ve come up with a list of suggestions for you! What We Offer: The Cowichan Intercultural Society offers a variety of free professional services to newcomers to Canada. This includes English lessons, settlement counselling, facilitated networking and mentoring, employment related services, and referrals (ex. translations, trauma support and health care). Where you can help: 1. Make a donation Cowichan Intercultural Society has established a Refugee Support Fund for our community • Your donations are eligible for a charitable tax receipt • The funds will be used to support refugees in our community and to assist sponsoring groups • For more information, call 250 748 3112 • To donate online, visit https://www.canadahelps.org/

en/charities/cowichan-valleyintercultural-and-immigrantaid-society/ Secure housing is, perhaps, the greatest need in the community - the Cowichan Valley currently faces low vacancy rates. If you have any leads on permanent housing solutions, please contact the Intercultural Society at 250-748-3112. 2. Volunteer • take a turn driving newcomers to appointments • prepare a meal or outing • be an English language tutor • be a professional mentor • help fundraise for refugee supports • help create a welcoming and inclusive community 3. Sponsor a refugee or refugee family • Sponsorship is a one-year commitment to fully support the refugee/family • A decision to sponsor does not mean someone is immediately granted entry into Canada. It can be a slow process. Patience and perseverance are required. •Contact the Cowichan Intercultural Society to learn more about local refugee/ family sponsorship initiatives • More information through Citizenship and Immigration Canada: www.cic.gc.ca • Looking for a helpful resource? “We live at the edge of the world, so we live on the edge. Kiwis will sacrifice money and security for adventure and change.” Lucy Lawless (b. March 29, 1968)

Aries (March 21-April 19) DOES YOUR PAST PREDICT YOUR FUTURE? This forecast begins with highlights of your past because if what I say about your past rings true, then you can trust what I say about your future. Around 1998-99, Jupiter was in your sign bringing you opportunities and good fortune; and by 2001-03, your life was a revolving door with job changes and residential moves. (Gasp.) You handled this well because you thrive on adventure and anything new! By 2004, you needed a secure home base. Fortunately, you had marvellous chances to improve your job. In 2007-08, life was good! This was a time of graduation, promotions and kudos that made you proud. By 2009-10, you were busting your buns to prove what you could do; and sure enough, in 2011, you got recognition for your efforts. However, at that time, relationships started to fray; and by 2014, partnerships and marriages were brutal. Fortunately, something on the home front looked better, perhaps because you moved to bigger digs. Certainly, your family was happier. By 2015, you had wonderful opportunities to take a vacation and travel for pleasure!

And here it is ---- 2016! WEALTH, CAREER AND REPUTATION Yay! This year you can get a better job or improve your existing job. You might get better surroundings or working conditions. You might get a promotion! Maybe you need to get rid of your evil boss? You can have it all! Meanwhile, you are approaching a career peak in 2018, when all your past efforts will bear the greatest fruit. But you have to understand the rules of the game. You must be performance ready! Therefore, ask yourself what training or education you need to get that extra edge? Can you travel this year to flesh out what you need before you step out on stage? Because know this – when you step out on stage in 2018, your effectiveness as a human being will be tested. This is not a casual thing. The last time this cycle occurred for your sign was in 1986-1988. In 2016, expect disputes about shared property, inheritances, insurance issues, taxes and debt. It’s a poor time to get a loan or a mortgage because ego conflicts will hamper the negotiations. This year, as you improve your job and move forward to achieve your goals in 2018, you will rely on yourself because the resources of others might not be available. “The game, Mrs. Hudson, is on!” LOVE, PARTNERSHIPS AND FRIENDS Romantic relationships and friendships will be happy this year because success is sexy, and you will be successful! Since things will go swimmingly at work, your confidence will be strong. You will feel good about yourself! And when you feel good about yourself, others pick up on this, and they are attracted to you. Furthermore, your health will get a boost this year, and healthy people look sexy! Meanwhile, Saturn is now in your fellow Fire Sign helping all aspects of your life to run smoothly. The Sun is your will and Saturn will help you express your will and purpose in life. Therefore, you will feel stronger

relating to others intimately or casually. (“I’ve got my scene together.”) However, all is not sweetness and light. There are some obstacles this year that will arise in your closest relationships. Basically, these obstacles will relate to disagreements about jointly-held resources, shared property and how to handle shared expenses. How can you deal with this? Remember: Patience is the antidote to anger. Think of all the opportunities for makeup sex in 2016! HOME AND FAMILY Since the year 2016 is one of the best years for your health and well-being, this blessing will obviously spill into your relationships with family members. In addition, because your work and job will be fulfilling and rewarding this year, this too, will contribute to increased happiness in your home life. But note: This blessing to your health will also bring weight gain because as it attracts good things to you, it attracts flesh to the bone. (Time to let out another pleat in your shower curtain?) In 2011, Uranus entered your sign to stay until 2019 making this one of the most revolutionary stages of your life. Uranus gives you the courage to clear away limitations. It will help you strike a blow for freedom and chart a new course! While it’s true you have obligations to yourself, you also have obligations to others. And while these inflamed qualities might help your personal development, your rebellion against authority might not go over well with family. Ya think? A SNEAK PEEK BEYOND 2016 As we peek into the future, we see that 2018 is your year for kudos, advancements and promotions. Balloons and streamers, puleeze! If this occurs when you’re younger, it might indicate a graduation, marriage, or the birth of your first child – in other words, something eventful that is important to you. However, more likely, it signals a time when you’re enjoying professional success. It might also be a time when you spin off and becoming self-employed. At that time, it will be easy for you to get loans, mortgages and financial and practical assistance from others. The year 2019 will see lots of travel, plus opportunities in publishing, the media, medicine, the law and higher education. In 2020, your name will be up in lights! You will push your agenda forward. In 2021, you will enjoy increased popularity; and in May, 2022, lucky Jupiter will return to your sign for the first time since 2011, bringing you all kinds of advantages and good fortune. Yay me! By 2024, you will boost your earnings and assets, which brings a big smile to your face in 2025.

My Aries Mantra for 2014 “Good health and a good job are a winning combo!”

“I believe in manicures. I believe in overdressing. I believe in primping at leisure and wearing lipstick. I believe in pink…and...I believe in miracles.” Audrey Hepburn(May 4, 1929 – Jan. 20, 1993)

Taurus (April 20-May 20) DOES YOUR PAST PREDICT YOUR FUTURE? If we look back, we see that around 1991-92 was when realestate negotiations and your home and family life flourished. You felt richer, and family life was happier. Your career and reputation looked strong. In 1993, parties, romance and vacations were fun. Partnerships were blessed in 1994, and in 1995, you benefited from the wealth of others. But in the next three years, you had to give up a lot, which led to a whole new world around 1999. Fortunately, lucky Jupiter entered your sign then, paving the way for new things to come. By 2001, increased earnings were sweet. However, 2004-2006 brought job changes and residential moves that created turmoil in your life. The year 2008 was great for travel, publishing or school; and by 2009, you put your name up in lights! Then you busted your buns in the next three years to get the recognition that you deserved in 2013. Since then, partnerships have been challenging. Fortunately, your optimism held. Last year was good for real-estate. You might have moved to more comfortable digs. Family relationships likewise were enriched.

And here it is ---- 2016! WEALTH, CAREER AND REPUTATION This year brings a greater emphasis on finances, shared property, taxes, debt and inheritances. Your challenge is the difficulty of getting the support of others. The resources of someone might be cut off. A professional partnership might end. You might find it hard to get a business loan or funding or raise money. This doesn’t mean you cannot earn good money because you can. It simply means that you must rely less on the resources of others and more on yourself. Expect intense encounters with someone over a difference in values. Ideally, you would agree to disagree. But this year, because feisty Mars will oppose your sign for the first seven months, you are easily annoyed with others and will not compromise! Do not assume something is their entire fault because until autumn, you simply have a short fuse. The good news is that despite this lack of support – you are

actually moving to a time of harvest. Ever since 2012, you have been out of the gate and moving upward to a career peak that will occur in about five years. So do not be discouraged! Despite difficulties in getting loans and raising money, this is a good year to explore opportunities in show business, the entertainment world, and the hospitality industry because doors will open easily. LOVE, PARTNERSHIPS AND FRIENDS Oh wow, this is one of the best years for Taurus for fantastic love affairs and romance! Many will strike up a new romance and enjoy saucy flirtations. Those in existing partnerships will take a lighter approach to things. You will be more playful and want to “date” and go on fun vacations. Your relationships, especially romantic ones, will feel revitalized, friendlier more joyful. If you can plan a vacation with someone – this is the year to do it because it’s the best year for a vacation that you have had in over a decade! You loves cruises because you enjoy fine dining in pleasurable circumstances. There is one factor to consider with all your relationships this year and it is that fiery Mars will oppose your sign for the first seven months, making you easily annoyed with others. Solution? Be patient. You have to own the fact that your reaction is part of the problem. It doesn’t mean that others aren’t annoying; but it does mean that your ability to deal with these everyday annoyances is strained and challenged. Forewarned is forearmed. HOME AND FAMILY Your challenge this year is that the resources of others are hard to get. This is a bad year to negotiate an inheritance or get a mortgage or a loan for your home. Expect serious discussions with the family about financial matters and jointlyheld property. With Mars opposite your sign for the first seven months, you will disagree with your kids or your parents. Just remember that by September, these hard feelings will lighten up immensely! The good news is this is the year for a fantastic family vacation! Enjoy social outings, sports events and the arts. The tone of things at home will be happier, lighter and more playful. Your family might expand through marriage, birth or adoption. Your relationship to family members will improve because you’re ready to express yourself more freely. Your crops will be plentiful and the land will flow with milk and honey. Your family will rejoice and a greater bandwidth will bless your modem. A SNEAK PEEK BEYOND 2016 Your ability to improve your job is fantastic in 2017. (You will be amazed.) In 2018, partnerships will be blessed and you will start to prepare for a career peak in 2021. In 2019, it will be easy to get a loan or a mortgage and benefit from the wealth of others. Money must be coming your way because you are off travelling in 2020! Life is so good! April born Taurus is will be feeling quite defiant at this time. You will insist on carving your own path in society because you no longer feel you have to keep to the straight and narrow that was dictated to you all of your life. The year 2021 is when you will feel proud of your accomplishments. This is also a time when you can put your name up in lights. This is a lifechanging time because the endorsement and praise of others inspires you to take a new direction in your life so that you can be all possible things – anything you had dared to dream.

My Taurus Mantra for 2016 “I have the courage to be myself and enjoy life to the limit!”

“Washington is a city of Southern efficiency and Northern charm.” John F. Kennedy (b. May 29, 1917 – Nov. 22, 1963)

Gemini (May 21-June 20) DOES YOUR PAST PREDICT YOUR FUTURE? In the early to mid 90s, your home life improved. Some expanded their family; but for most, it was a time of promotion and recognition. In1996, assistance from others allowed you to travel the following year. In 1999, you started to say goodbye to people, places and possessions in order to begin a new path in 2001. By 2005, romance, love affairs, parties, sports and vacations were memorable. In 2006, you sailed through job changes and residential moves. Marriage and partnerships were enhanced in 2007 and by 2008-9, you you wanted to create a solid home for yourself in the world. The years 2010-11 were popular; but, many had increased responsibilities with children. Lady luck smiled on you in 2012-13 when lucky Jupiter stayed in your sign. Opportunities for serious work arrived and made you bust your buns from 2013 to 2015. At times, life felt overwhelming, but you survived. The most important thing about last year was your belief in yourself. This made you reach out for the impossible. “I’m not backward about going forward!”

And Here It Is ---- 2016! WEALTH, CAREER AND REPUTATION This is an exciting year for Geminis because you are taking your powah! For the last 14 years, you were figuring out who you were and what you could do. Stating now and for the next eight years, you will focus on your accomplishments and reputation. Your ambition is aroused! First, you will demand a better working environment. If selfemployed, you might want to buy the premises. You might also want to bring in a family member or be more involved in a family business. Another thing is that you will work so hard you will be bossy about telling others to shape up if they don’t work as hard as you. And you will want credit for what you do! You will also develop a plan of action that will manifest in its ultimate glory -- your career peak around 2023. In 2016, it’s important to get physical exercise to blow off pent-up steam that will build up in you. Establish a program of rigourous physical activity

Guy.” It does not mean this at all. But it does mean that you will feel more confident in demanding respect for your wishes and needs. Furthermore, your wishes and needs are changing! This is why relationships that are problematic will face even greater problems. And relationships that are just more trouble than they are worth – will end. Therefore, in the next two years, difficult marriages, partnerships and close friendships are more likely than ever to split; but this does not have to happen. But it might. HOME AND FAMILY Along with relationships, perhaps the most dramatic change that the year 2016 will bring to your life will be with home and family because this is the best year for you to buy real estate since 2004. (And you won’t have another year that is as good as 2016 until 2027.) That means in a 24-year stretch – this is the best year for you to benefit from real estate. If you do not buy a home, then any investment in your current home will benefit you in the long run and bring you a financial profit in the future. If none of the above is possible, you will still enjoy your home more because you will either move to a bigger home that is more luxurious and spacious, or you will buy something for your home that makes you feel richer. Family relationships will improve because family members will be more caring, loving and more mutually generous to each other. Your family might even increase in size. Wow! A SNEAK PEEK BEYOND 2016 A peek into the future shows you taking a fabulous vacation in 2017. Not only is this a great year to take one or more vacations, it’s also a great year for love, romance, sports, the arts and the enjoyment of children. Yahoo!! After all that partying, your attention gets more serious in 2018 because this is your turn to improve your job or get a better job. It’s important to know this because if you are discouraged where you are working at this time – go for a different job and you will get it! Enjoy improved partnerships and relationships in 2019, which is also a great year to get married! By 2021, you’re travelling or going back to school or get further training or education to prepare you for a lovely career peak that takes place in 2023. This is also a popular year! By 2024, lucky Jupiter returns to your sign again boosting your confidence and attracting all kinds of good fortune and favourable circumstances to you. Meanwhile your career still looks fabulous!

My Gemini Mantra for 2016 “I am putting down roots to embrace home and family.”

This means your greatest challenge this year is getting others to recognize that you’re not the same person you’ve been for the last 14 years. Things have changed. You have more self-respect, more energy and more ambition. If others don’t acknowledge this – they’re history. LOVE, PARTNERSHIPS AND FRIENDS Perhaps the most significant impact of 2016 will be to your relationships. This is because you will undergo a planetary transit that has not occurred since 1986-1988 that will force you to redefine who you are in your own terms. This year you will claim your power for the first time since the 80s, and for many– this will be something new! Therefore, your existing relationships must undergo a change. They cannot continue as they were because you will not continue as you were. This does not mean that you’re saying, “Hey – no more Mr. Nice

35

“Canada is like a loft apartment over a really great party.” Robin Williams ( July 21, 1951 – August 11, 2014)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) DOES YOUR PAST PREDICT YOUR FUTURE? Life was interesting around 1990 because you were feeling great; and yet, it was a testing time for relationships, which is why many of you split up then. Around the millennium, your reputation was stellar. Your popularity increased. Around 2001, you entered a three-year span of letting go of what you had created since the late 80s. This was not an easy! You never let go. Your closets, cupboards and drawers are full. You are practical, mechanical and resourceful so of course, you think, “I might need this piece of black felt someday.” Not only did you give up people, places, and jobs, you had to high grade what you owned and get rid of what you didn’t use. But really, this was less about loss and more about entering a whole new world around 2004 “Lucy, I’m home!” By late 2013 and 2014, you were happy because lucky Jupiter was in your sign. Last year you got a better understanding of how to use your resources and make them work for you and not be a burden. (Oy vey. Life is tough. This money is so heavy!)

And Here It Is ---- 2016! WEALTH, CAREER AND REPUTATION In terms of your work, the next few years are a major test. What you do now will bear fruit in 2018. But this can be discouraging because you might feel you’re getting no recognition. Do not be discouraged if you feel overwhelmed because you will get recognition in a few years. But in the meantime, put your nose to the grindstone, which when you think about it, is an impossible position to do anything! Older Cancers can relate back to 1986-89, for a similar time life was this busy. Fortunately, lucky Jupiter will offset these challenges. That’s because Jupiter will guarantee a happy state of mind in 2016! Yes, you will follow Col. Saito’s advice, “Be happy in your work.” (Whistling riff from The Bridge on River Kwai here.) Jupiter will give you an every day sense of optimism. This also means this is an excellent year for any kind of advanced training in any field of study that interests you, especially something that relates to your work and your everyday tasks. Reading cook books counts. Arnold Toynbee hit the nail on the head when he said, “The supreme accomplishment is to blur the line between work and play.” LOVE, PARTNERSHIPS AND FRIENDS Ooo la la! Zees is za year for loff! This year Mars is in the part of your chart that is all about romance, love affairs, vacations, parties, the arts, sports and hot sex!. (Be still my beating heart.) Yes, we’re talking twanging bed springs, swinging chandeliers

36

and banging headboards. You will seek out amusement not only for fun, but also as a form of your own self-expression. “I laugh, therefore, I am!” You will find it easy to be generous and tolerant of others. You will be less judgmental and more forgiving. Your kids will never fight and always do their homework and nothing in your fridge will sour. Yes, we’re talking that kind of power. To be sure, you’re working hard; but you will also play hard, especially in a flirtatious, evocative way. Of course, you won’t be overt – you never are. You will entice and attract. But this year, you will “think big.” You’ll have the courage to make a bid for someone you might normally be too shy to approach. Yeah, you’re a force to be reckoned with -pulsating with flirtatious energy! HOME AND FAMILY You are interested in what affects your home and family because your home is your refuge, and it is where you nurture your loved ones. You run the scene and make sure everyone is fed. In 2016, you will have your happy face on. It will happen without any effort because of the placement of Jupiter. Remember: This wonderful influence only occurs once every 12 years, so make the most of it! Enjoy warm family relations. In September, your focus on home and family will grow even more. From then on, you will want to expand your home or renovate or move to a larger home. If so, this is an excellent time to explore real-estate opportunities because whatever you do will benefit you in the future. Late this year and next year, family members will be generous to each other. Actually, none of this is surprising because it all starts out with a positive frame of mind, which is the key to success. A SNEAK PEEK BEYOND 2016 The year 2017 will be one of the best years for real-estate opportunities. If you don’t buy or invest, you might rent something larger. At the very least, you will do something to make where you live feel better. Family relationships will be warmer as well. The year 2018 is great for vacations, the arts and the entertainment world. You might also expand your family. However, partnerships might be crunchy both this year and next. Ironically, one of the reasons that partnerships might be challenging is you’re starting to be successful in the external world. Your efforts of the previous two years are now paying off! Perhaps this newfound success, plus your increased focus on your external world, will create stress to an existing relationship? Fortunately, by 2020, stress to your partnerships is reduced. In fact, this is an excellent year to get married! The year 2022 offers lots of travel opportunities. By 2023, you can put your name up in lights; nevertheless, you are now starting to work for a career peak that occurs in 2025-26. Well done!

My Cancer Mantra for 2016 “Positive thoughts will bring me positive results.”

“Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.” Neil Armstrong (Aug. 5, 1930-Aug. 25, 2012)

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) DOES YOUR PAST PREDICT YOUR FUTURE? Do you remember stepping out into the world with kudos for your achievements in 1991? Soon your earnings took a boost, but partnerships were brutal. (Groan.) Around 1994, your home improved or your family expanded. In 1999/2000, years of work started to come to fruition; and travel, publishing, the media and medicine looked good. However, what happened in 2003-04? Suddenly, you had to let go of people, places and possessions. (“Stick a fork in me, Lord – I’m done!”) Nevertheless, you made a new home for yourself. Your work flourished and by 2009, relationships were strong. (That was a good time to get married.) Benefits from others came to you in 2010, and by 2011-12, you got recognition! People now knew what you could do. Many changed jobs, residences or both around 2011-2013. Then, glory hallelujah! Lucky Jupiter entered your sign in July 2014 to stay until August 2015 attracting goodies, wealth and flesh to the bone. Aaggghh. Remember Miss Piggy? “Never eat more than you can lift.”

And Here It Is ---- 2016! WEALTH, CAREER AND REPUTATION Two strong influences will boost your job in 2016. The first influence is money! Yes – lettuce, bread, clams, dough. (What a menu!) This is because for the first time since 2003-04, lucky, moneybags Jupiter will enter your House of Earnings and stay there for an entire year. Ka-ching! Not only will you earn more, many of you will enjoy increased work-related travel and deal with foreign countries and people from other cultures. This is good news! Leos like to have cash in their jeans because they’re high rollers. But hey, money is only useful if you spend it! The second influence is that Saturn will be in your fellow Fire Sign for the first time since 1996-98, giving you support instead of the headaches and challenges it threw your way since 2012. Oy! (Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.) Even your body will feel an improvement. In 2016, weak bones and stiff joints will change into strength and endurance; and your fatigue will fade. Major bonus! In addition, you will work hard this year but you won’t mind this because you will easily have self-discipline. Ah yes, you can get back to the thrill of tightrope walking. That’s why there’s “fun” in funambulism. And you will play the cello again! LOVE, PARTNERSHIPS AND FRIENDS In 2016, you have every reason to be hopeful of improving your existing relationships. If you are single, you can be just as hopeful of meeting someone new because this year, you will be confident and sexy. (Would I kid you?) You will feel adorable! Very important: Leos need to be adored. However, you’re not cruising this year. Singles want serious

“Following the pathway of our Buddha nature, life is filled with joy” Weekly Meditation - TUESDAYS VIU Cowichan Campus

romance. You want Mr. Right not Mr. Right Now. Even though your confidence and poise are strong, and your increased earnings make you feel playful – you don’t want to fool around just to fool around. In fact, you might become involved with someone older or someone who is parental to you or vice versa, perhaps you will play a parental role. “Who’s my baby?” When Jupiter changes signs in September, you will start making bigger plans for the future, and your relations with others will be more upbeat. In fact, all your relations will improve because people will admire you. (That’s what you like!) Some of you will meet new romance through relatives, siblings and neighbours. After September, life will be happier and easier. Easier is good. HOME AND FAMILY In 2016, you will welcome and enjoy the chance to make improvements to your home by buying beautiful things. You will also entertain more. Leos are fabulous hosts. You will also enjoy the chance to be generous to family members because you have a better financial footing this year. You might have increased responsibilities with children in 2016. A son or daughter might move back in; or you might have increased responsibilities with a younger child. Perhaps this is why there will be increased chaos and activity at home for the first nine months of the year. Much more activity! This busyness might also be due to renovations, redecorating or a change of residence. Naturally, this explosion of energy means that there might be increased tension with family members for the first nine months. (Ya think?) You will have to be patient and tolerant. Relax; when your money worries are reduced, you always feel happier. And hey, this is nothing you can’t handle. A SNEAK PEEK BEYOND 2016 Looking ahead, I see that 2018 is an excellent time to buy or sell your home, and an equally good time to speculate in real estate. If you don’t do any of these things, you might improve where you live by buying beautiful things for your home or doing renovations. Or you might move someplace that feels bigger and better. The year 2018 will also promote enriched relations with family members. In 2019, you will enjoy vacations, love affairs and creative activities; and yet, this is also a year when you will work hard. In 2020, you will improve your health and your job. Count on this. By 2021, relationships will be cozier than they’ve ever been. (This is a great year to marry or enter into any new partnership.) In 2022, inheritances, gifts and favours from others will come your way because you will benefit from the resources and wealth of others. The year 2023 is full of travel and opportunities in publishing, the media, medicine and the law. And finally, in 2024, your reputation is stellar! Once again – your name is up in lights! Iiiiiit’s show time!

“Always remember your kid’s name.. and don’t let them drive until their feet can reach the pedals.” Amy Poehler (Sept. 16, 1971)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) DOES YOUR PAST PREDICT YOUR FUTURE? The early 90s were popular; and by 1995, you moved to bigger digs or perhaps bought a home. By 1997, you improved your job or got a better job; and on this winning streak, by 1998, relations and partnerships looked sweet! The new millennium was empowering because people respected you more, and you respected yourself more as well. It’s too easy for you to be self-critical. This is because you set such high standards for yourself – like perfection! Duh? No one is perfect. Not even me. Around 2006, you entered a three-year window where you gave up friendships, relationships, jobs, homes and countries. Even some vitamins. This was because you were gearing up for 2008. Change! In 2011, inheritances, gifts and favours from others helped; and by 2013, you were laughing! You made a great impression on others that year. (Virgos do impressions.) The last few years have been a revolving door of changing jobs and residences. Fortunately, lucky Jupiter is back in your sign giving you increased confidence, self poise and hope for your future! Thank gawd.

And Here It Is ---- 2016!

WEALTH, CAREER AND REPUTATION Your life has never looked better because lucky Jupiter is in your sign this year. Don’t take this lightly! It occurs only three maybe four times in your adult life. You are fortunate! This is the beginning a 12- year cycle of major growth and learning during which you will discover who you really are. (Save time – check your ID.) Jupiter will help you to overcome prejudices and narrow attitudes that limit your success. Opportunities will open up to expand your world, especially through travel or meeting people from other cultures and different countries. Your confidence will grow and your communications with others will be direct, proactive and assertive. You will go after what you want! If you need to argue with others – you’re in an excellent position. Obviously, all these qualities favour business and commercial negotiations, especially if you have to bargain with someone or demand favourable terms. In the autumn, opportunities to make more money, get a better job, or increase your wealth and assets will begin. This juicy influence continues into 2017. Yay me!

more attractive to others. Ya think? Another curious thing about Jupiter is that it makes you look more affluent. You look richer, even if you aren’t. Life is a cakewalk! Plus let us not forget that Mars will linger in one part of your chart for the first eight months of the year making you forthright, direct and proactive. You will look like you know what you’re talking about! Hmmm, rich, happy, confident, proactive -- is that sexy or what? As usual, what the large print giveth, the small print taketh away. Neptune opposes your sign from 2012 - 2026. Neptune is illusion, perfection, hopes and dreams, smoke and mirrors. It makes it difficult to really “see” your loved one. You might idealize someone or put them on a pedestal creating confusion or a negative codependency. (This can also affect your professional relationships.) Basically, it holds the danger of over idealizing your relationship out of proportion to reality. You might kid yourself into thinking everything is fine when it isn’t. It tempts you to believe whatever it is you want to believe about the relationship. Yes, Virgo is the sign of service; and service is a noble thing; but there is nothing noble about being a doormat, even if it has a Welcome sign on it. HOME AND FAMILY News Alert! The most significant thing about 2016 is how it will impact your home. Now is the time to establish a firm base for yourself and your family. You want a home that is reliable – a true refuge. Only after you have established this, can you go forward and slay dragons. (Buy a copy of Castle Building for Dummies.) Ironically, many of you changed residences recently because you were seeking the right home. Fine. If you don’t move again, you will do major repairs to where you now live. Your relationship with a parent will be significant now. You might have to take care of a parent or a family member. And if you do not take on the parental responsibility for someone else, possibly they will take on this role for you. Meanwhile, things that used to be important to you, no longer give you the same pleasure. (Whaaat?) Other things might come back into prominence, if they were not resolved. That’s why this is a good time also to seek out counseling. Or take up needlepoint.

First appointment free!

A SNEAK PEEK BEYOND 2016 Glory hallelujah! In 2017 and 2018, your earnings will increase. Yes! You might also benefit indirectly from the wealth of others. In 2019, you have the best real-estate opportunities that you will have for another 12 years. In other words, this continues to be time to improve your home by buying and selling, or buying for the first time. If you don’t move, it’s an excellent time to invest in your own home with improvements. And if you rent, you might move to bigger and better digs. And if you don’t make any of these changes – then at least, you will buy things for your home because in 2019, you feel richer and happier where you live. Factoid. The year 2020 is a fun-loving, playful, flirtatious year – great for vacations! Good news – you can improve your job in 2021 and your relationships in 2022, which might be why you get money and benefits through someone else in 2023! In 2024, you’re travelling and by 2025, you will put your name up in lights! Nice work.

“Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.” Groucho Marx (October 20, 1890 - August 19, 1977)

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) DOES YOUR PAST PREDICT YOUR FUTURE? Something expanded your home scene in the mid 90s, and by 1997, you started to get recognition for your efforts. By 1999, partnerships that had outlived their usefulness bit the dust, which meant that at the turn of the millennium, you were forced to get along with less. Fortunately, by 2002, your reputation began to shine! In 2004, you achieved a cherished dream. (This was a time of harvest when the seeds you had planted came to fruition.) In 2009, you gave up people, places and possessions to prepare for a new cycle that began in 2010. “Hello world!” Actually, 2010 was a turning point. Whether you were aware of it or not, this is when you began to reinvent yourself – a journey which is yet to be completed. In 2013, travel was sweet! You expanded your horizons and took advantage of opportunities in publishing, the media, medicine and the law. No wonder your reputation was stellar by 2014 when others began to be aware of your accomplishments. Take a bow.

And Here It Is ---- 2016!

WEALTH, CAREER AND REPUTATION You will identify with your wealth this year because you see it as a sign of your personal worth. You will work hard to earn money, and spend it, in order to surround yourself with the tokens of success. This might lead to disputes. For example, your idealism is aroused this year, which might prompt you to give away money or possessions, or live more simply. This might alarm someone close to you. This year is the final stage of redefining the new you. (This process began in 2010.) This stage involves honing how you speak, listen and think. To facilitate this process, your daily milieu will change. You will no longer look around you with familiarity. This is why you will change your job or residence. (Possibly next year.) Your new daily environment will force you to see, listen and think because everything is different. Good news! Lucky, moneybags Jupiter enters your sign in September to stay for an entire year. Fantastic! The last time this happened was in 2004-2005. It will not return until 2028. People and favourable resources will be drawn to you now; and by the end of this year, it will be easy to get what you want. It will be the perfect time to initiate new projects and expand your activities. Many of you will travel more or pursue new studies. It’s all good! LOVE, PARTNERSHIPS AND FRIENDS You like the company of others and hate to end a relationship because you don’t want to be alone. This is why you often stay in a questionable relationship. Sigh. This year you want to earn money and acquire beautiful things. Plus you might move or change jobs. These two influences could bring new people into your life, or create problems in existing relationships. One thing is certain: This year you are idealistic and focused on your inner world. Because of this, you will seek out experiences to help you with your inner development like meditation or yoga. You might meet someone who is like-minded. (“Wanna get together and hum OHM on the Range?”)

The first strong indication of an influence that will definitely impact your relationships begins in October, when lucky Jupiter enters your sign. When this happens – you will change. And you will change for the better. You will feel happier, more positive about life and more social. This increased happiness will attract people to you plus make existing relationships happier and more lighthearted. This is a certainty. HOME AND FAMILY The biggest impact on your home this year is that you might move. And if you don’t move, you will improve your home. ”Love it!” Meanwhile, you want to earn money because you will equate what you own with your sense of self-worth, which means you will glam up your world so that you feel richer and luckier! (You like pillows on the sofa, Persian carpets, beautiful window arrangements, overstuffed furniture and good lighting.) This love of beautiful things coupled with your feeling that your wealth is “who you are” will result in some classy changes at home. In October, when lucky Jupiter enters your sign, your life will feel lighter and happier! Naturally, this positive attitude will impact your relations with family members, as well as how you view your home and your personal life. Let’s face it, you will be more content and secretly pleased in your bedroom, in your living room, and even in your kitchen (if you know where it is). A SNEAK PEEK BEYOND 2016 You have much to look forward to in 2017 because lucky Jupiter is in your sign! In 2018, you will boost your earnings or get a better job; and by 2019, you will do everything in your power to solidify your home base. Certainly, the following year, 2020, is the best year in over a decade to invest in real estate or buy a new home or renovate where you currently live. The year 2021 is a fun-loving year for vacations and warm relations with children. By 2022, you can get a better job or improve your existing job. The year 2023 is the perfect year to get married. It’s also a wonderful year to improve existing partnerships and relationships. By 2024, an inheritance or a chance to benefit from shared property with someone will help you. In 2025, travel will delight. Make plans ahead of time to go somewhere special because this trip will broaden your horizons and bring you joy and a better understanding of the world. In 2026, you will boost and enhance your reputation! Voila!

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

you from discovering your true values, you might experience loss. Remember: Your greatest asset this year is your own motivated energy because you are hungry to get what you want. But do you know what you want? This is important to establish. Once you know what you want, others will be ready to help you, more than any other time in over a decade.

DOES YOUR PAST PREDICT YOUR FUTURE? In 1993-94, life was good because Jupiter was in your sign; and soon, around 1997, you improved your home scene. Job opportunities were strong by the turn of the millennium; however, partnerships were challenging, and ended. A significant time in your life occurred around 2006 when you began to take your power and act with confidence. By 2011, you improved your job or got a better job. Also at that time you began to let go of much of what you had created in your life since 1999. Last year, your career and reputation got a boost. Many of you got a promotion, public recognition or esteem from your peers. Work-related travel was also likely. What is significant to know is that since 2012, you have been on a new 30- year journey. During the first leg of this journey (from 2012 until 2020) you will reinvent yourself. Ta da! In 2020, you will look back at your life in 2011 and think, “OMG, my life is so different now!” Keep checking the mirror cuz you’re changing daily!

LOVE, PARTNERSHIPS AND FRIENDS The world of partnerships and romance is your strongest gift this year. To begin with, you are admired – what an edge! In addition, this year, a planetary influence will make your interactions with others benefit you. It’s as if every time you meet someone, you come out ahead! (Maybe a great idea, a wonderful introduction or the perfect sympathetic ear – something different every time.) In addition, you’re full of strong, wild, sexy energy! (This blessing is a double-edged sword. What to one person might be passionate and exciting – to another, could be too much and scary! But hey, you would never settle for a wimp.) Basically, your advantages this year in your relationships are that you are energized, sexy and forthright; you are willing to go after what you want; and at the same time, as if by magic, your connections with others seem to help you! When it comes to new romance – the rest is up to you. Existing partnerships will be revved with energy and will benefit -- as long as you remember that you are a handful this year. Oh yeah. People will be in awe of you.

”I was so naïve as a kid I used to sneak behind the barn and do nothing.” Johnny Carson (Oct. 23, 1925 – Jan 23, 25)

And Here It Is ---- 2016! WEALTH, CAREER AND REPUTATION This year, for the first time in this century, you have a chance to show the world what you can do. Not because of opportunities that come your way, although they may. Not because others will help you, and they will. It will be because you will be more of a fighter for your own rights. You will take the bit in your teeth and go after what you want. Plus you will have high physical energy to do this. This year will be upbeat, independent and a positive time. This combination might not come again for years – but it is here this year – so use it! Meanwhile, this is a popular year for you. Acquaintances, organizations and groups are willing to help you. Many of you will get a promotion at work or public recognition. This year, it’s important to define what you really value. This does not just mean material things. In fact, if material wealth is keeping

HOME AND FAMILY With Mars in your sign for most of this year, you will have a high level of physical energy! Naturally, you will use this to work. However, it can also make you impatient with others, which is destructive to peace at home. Note: Physical exercise will release this pent-up energy. Secondly, 2016 will be popular! You will be active and out of your home a lot. Conversely, you will also invite groups to your home. Thirdly, this year you will learn what is really important to you. (One way to get things in perspective is to imagine losing someone. Scary but true.) When you think of how precious your loved ones are – this makes you see how secondary other things really are. From 2011 until 2019, there is a stronger than average relationship between your home and your health. This means that anxiety about possessions, being house proud and dealing with family members will impact your health. Lighten up about not getting your way at home. A SNEAK PEEK BEYOND 2016 Good news! In October 2017, lucky, moneybags Jupiter enters Scorpio to stay for a whole year! The last time Jupiter was in your sign was in 2006; and the next time will be 2029. (This blessing occurs maybe three times in your adult life.) It will be like having Lady Luck smile on you. People and resources will be attracted to you. You will think like a winner. Your selfconfidence and poise will increase, which has a lasting effect for later years. Even the spiritual dimension of your life will deepen. Between 2018 and 2021, job changes and residential moves are likely. The year 2021 is the best year in a 24-year stretch for you to take advantage of real estate. If you buy and sell real estate at that time – wonderful. You will at least improve your current home or rent a bigger and better home. In 2022, a fabulous vacation is on the horizon, and by 2023, you can improve your job or get a better job. Guaranteed! Assistance, money and resources from others will come your way in 2024 and 2025. Looking good!

Valley Voice Magazine - Your Monthly Guide to Living in the Cowichan Valley

“I’ve been to Canada, and I’ve always gotten the impression that I could take the country over in about 2 days.” Jon Stewart (Nov. 28 1962)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) DOES YOUR PAST PREDICT YOUR FUTURE? You are the traveller of the zodiac. You’re freaked if you haven’t been on a plane in six months. Looking back, around 1991-92, you had chances to travel; and by 1992-93, you were sailing through job changes and residential moves. By 1994, you set down roots; and by 1998, you further improved your home. In 2002, relationships were challenging. That’s why some of you hit the road in 2003 to blow town. In 2007, when lucky Jupiter returned to your sign, things looked better. In the next few years, many of you achieved a cherished dream. The year 2010 was excellent for real-estate deals and improving your home. Whatever you did would be profitable in the future. The following year, you enjoyed vacations, parties, playful times with children and yes – romance! However, the real turning point began around 2013 when you entered a two-year window, which involved dismantling much of what you had created since 2001. You gave up people, places and possessions in order to move forward on a new path that began last year. This new journey is so different, many of you have changed your daily wardrobe.

And Here It Is ---- 2016! WEALTH, CAREER AND REPUTATION This year is special for two reasons: The first is that Saturn is in your sign for the first time since 1986-88. (Will return in 2045.) This means you’re beginning a 30-year journey, during which you will reinvent yourself in the first eight years. Everything in the next few years will be part of what redefines you. Traditionally, this is a time when astrologers would advise you not to take on anything new. Don’t spread yourself too thin. However, this year (second reason) your ruler Jupiter is at the top of your chart putting your name up in lights!, (Won’t happen again until 2027.) This brings acknowledgement, a promotion or kudos. One interpretation of these two influences would be that you would begin a new job or live in a new place, meeting new people and experiencing new events; and yet, at the same time, this is because you have been successful. It’s your pay off! Furthermore, you love this new situation so much, it literally grows on you and by 2023, your life is transformed, and voila! You are the new you! One thing is certain: your responsibilities will continue to be heavy even though your accomplishments are great. Your main challenge will be to handle an impulse to be introverted and private, while you are out there flying your colours! LOVE, PARTNERSHIPS AND FRIENDS Three different things influence your love life this year. One is Mars, which indicates hidden love affairs. Naturally, not all Sagittarians will have hidden love affairs but a surprising number of them will! The second planetary influence is that you are on entirely new turf. It’s a whole new ballgame! Some of you will experiment sexually in ways that later, you will look back, thinking, “Wow, what a ride!” Others will feel freer to be who they really are because this is a liberating situation. The third influence is Jupiter is making you look successful, and success is sexy! Therefore, your increased confidence and success, combined with your entirely new world, with the added influence of Mars making you do whatever you want,

is pretty heady stuff! How you handle this is your business. But for sure, many Sagittarians will experience unusual, unorthodox, exciting romantic relationships – relationships they never thought they would have. Sagittarian, Woody Allen said, “I sold my memoirs of my love life to Parker Brothers and they are going to make a game out of it.” HOME AND FAMILY One of the main influences on your home and family life is the fact that you are setting off on an entirely new path. This began either last year or this year. As such, it could mean a change of residence. It might even mean some of you are in a new country, which is not unusual since you are the most welltraveled sign in the zodiac. The fact that you are on the first leg of the journey of reinventing yourself will affect relations with family. The single planetary influence that directly affects home and family for your sign is Neptune – and this will be a very long-term influence. Neptune, the planet of hopes and dreams, idealism and illusion is travelling through the part of your chart that pertains to home and family. And it will stay there until 2026, so this is a very long influence, and a subtle one. It will certainly make you strive to have your ideal “dream home.” A SNEAK PEEK BEYOND As we peek in the future, we see that next is a popular year; but what really looks promising is your ruler, lucky Jupiter will enter your sign in Nov. 2018 to stay until Dec. 2019. This is such good fortune! You will attract so many good things to you; your only worry will be weight gain. In 2020, you will boost your earnings. But the thing to make note of is that your best year for real-estate negotiations and investing in real estate, buying or selling or improving your own home is the year 2022. Make note of this because if you are thinking of doing something with real estate around 2020 or 2021, you will know that you should wait until 2022 to get the best deal and the best situation that gives you the best value for the long-term future. Astrology can help people with practical timing, especially in real estate. The year 2023 is a great time for a vacation and in 2024, we see you have magnificent opportunities to improve your health as well as your job.

”I’m not a paranoid deranged millionaire. Goddamit, I’m a billionaire!” Howard Hughes (Dec. 24, 1905 – April 5, 1976)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) DOES YOUR PAST PREDICT YOUR FUTURE? You are a perfectionist. Details matter. Results matter. Everything matters. You want credit for what you do because you want respect from your peers. Older Capricorns will hearken back to around 1989-90, when you set off on a new path. Your world was so different then your daily wardrobe might have changed. (You like to fit in and are quick to adapt to the status quo.) In 1993-96, you changed jobs, residences or both. Fortunately, you impressed others. Many got a promotion or garnered the respect of important people. By 1997-98, you had to secure your home base. Sure enough, in 1999, you explored real-estate possibilities or improved your home scene. By 2006-08, you were struggling because the resources of others were cut off from you. In 2008, lucky Jupiter returned to your sign boosting your confidence and attracting opportunities to you. You were able to use these to enjoy your time of harvest in 2011. You improved your job in 2014; and last year was a wonderful time to get money from others (loans, a mortgage or fundraising.) You are a shrewd negotiator.

And Here It Is ---- 2016! WEALTH, CAREER AND REPUTATION You hate waste. You are fixated on achieving your goals. You respect the status quo, and you want respect from the status quo. The true meaning of the word career is your life path because it is based on the old French word carrier meaning “highway.” So whether you have a slave wage job or you are retired – you have a career. This is a significant time in your life because beginning last year, you entered a threeyear window where you will get rid of what is no longer relevant in your life -- jobs, homes, friendships, partnerships and even countries. Do not think of this as loss but rather as a time of lightening up and freeing yourself so that you will be performance ready to begin a new world in 2018. Your primary objective is to finish up things. Circumstances will compel you to do so. Meanwhile, lucky Jupiter will push you beyond your boundaries! Travel, especially travel to foreign countries will delight you. This year extensive travel will teach you something which can affect your job and career. This is your year to get performance ready for next year. This year is an excellent time to go back to school or take a course to enhance your world and make you better equipped to grab opportunities that come your way in the future.

HOME AND FAMILY Home and family are important to you. Your challenge this year will be to wrap up loose ends and face inevitable situations that force you to let go of things. You will go through cupboards, closets, lockers and garages to get rid of what you no longer need. It’s important to remember that there are two major influences this year. As you let go of what is no longer useful to you, remind yourself that you are lightening your load so that you can begin something new in 2018 with fresh vigour. Secondly, at this time, you want to be light on your feet so that you can take advantage of all kinds of new opportunities. This is a time of preparation for next year, when your reputation is shining! So as you go through the process of downsizing, remember what is coming up next year in 2017 and the following year in 2018. Therefore, as this cycle ends, it is also a time of preparation for what is to come. A SNEAK PEEK BEYOND 2016 Next year is a fabulous year because lucky Jupiter will travel across the top of your chart promoting your reputation and your status in your community and among your peers. Since this wonderful influence will not come again until 2027, make the most of this! In 2018, you will begin a 30-year journey, wherein you will virtually reinvent yourself in the first eight years. (The last time this happened was in 1988-89.) In 2020, lucky, moneybags Jupiter will be in your sign attracting good fortune to you and boosting your self confidence. An increase to your earnings in 2021 will please you, but take note that 2022-23 is an excellent time to pursue real-estate opportunities. At the very least, you will improve your home and possibly your family will expand. A fabulous vacation in 2024 will delight you before marvellous job opportunities come your way in 2025. Fellow Capricorn Steve Garvey said, “You must be passionate, you must dedicate yourself, and you must be relentless in the pursuit of your goals. If you do, you will be successful.”

Rachel Allen Tellington TTouch

LOVE, PARTNERSHIPS AND FRIENDS Your demeanour sometimes makes others think you are detached and cool. Actually, you’re passionate and you want intimacy! Fortunately, this year, lucky Jupiter will encourage long-distance relationships or romance with someone from another culture. It can also make you be impressed with money and wealth. Be careful because if you marry for money, you pay a high price. Meanwhile, Saturn will trigger changes that force you to let go of relationships that are more trouble than they are worth. You might say goodbye to someone either by choice or because circumstances dictate it. This year you could have difficulties with friends because you might resent group pressures or you might find it difficult to work with others. Competition with someone might also get in the way. Generally, you work well with groups, but this year you don’t want to take a backseat position to anyone. Furthermore, you want credit for what you do! Next year, things will look different because you will appear to be successful. In fact, this appearance of success will begin late this year for many of you. Success is so seductive, isn’t it?

“Which form of proverb do you prefer Better late than never, or Better never than late?” Lewis Carroll (Jan. 27, 1832- Jan. 14, 1898)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) DOES YOUR PAST PREDICT YOUR FUTURE? You had fresh new beginnings in the early 90s, which involved new surroundings, new people and perhaps a change in your daily wardrobe. In 1997, life was still in a state of flux due to job changes or residential moves. By 1999, you needed a home base you could trust, which is why you moved again, or repaired and renovated where your home. By 2003, partners and warm friendships were supportive. (More than other signs, you value friendships and your involvement with groups.) People started to take you seriously in 2006 when you got promotions, kudos and acknowledgements. However, partnerships were challenging right up to 2009, when some ended. In 2012, you explored real-estate opportunities or improved your home scene by moving to a better home or improving where you currently lived. In the next few years, cherished dreams came true! The year 2015 brought welcome news because life has been tough since 2012. Now this is over. Yay! Relations with others have become rewarding, joyful and consciousness expanding.

And Here It Is ---- 2016! WEALTH, CAREER AND REPUTATION Glory hallelujah! The year 2016 is so good for you, your problems are the problems of success! Namely, that you spread yourself too thin trying to meet the demands of everyone. (Gasp.) You have to stop selling yourself out because you count, too. This year, your goal is to integrate your individual self with groups. No problemo! You work well with others. In fact, it’s what you do. You get everyone to sign petitions for important causes because you understand the power of uniting like-minded individuals to make the world a better place. Plus it’s an excuse to drink beer. The reason that your ambition is your main problem this year is because others might feel threatened by you. (Eeeek!) Frankly, things could be worse. And here is the good news – the really good news! Money! This year lucky, moneybags Jupiter will travel through one of your Money Houses, which means money from others will come to you. You can get a loan or a mortgage. You might receive an inheritance. You might get money back from the government or benefit indirectly through your partner. In addition, you will be able to use what other people own. Ask and ye shall receive. You will get funding and financial support from others. Your ambition will make you work hard to achieve your goals; and meanwhile, teamwork with others will flow naturally. Be grateful life is this good. LOVE, PARTNERSHIPS AND FRIENDS Because you look so good this year, of course, your romantic prospects are strong. It’s axiomatic! You’re on top of your game; you’re ambitious; you benefit from the wealth of others – all of which make you look like a winner! In addition, you will enjoy a relationship with Saturn that has not occurred since 1996-98. And it’s a good relationship! Saturn will give you patience, perseverance and make you careful in everything you do, including relating to others. Your life will run more smoothly, which generates the kind of energy that promotes positive relationships. (Let’s face it: When life is horrible, relationships suffer!) So this will be an easy year for relationships and friendships; but there is one caveat. Fiery

Mars, the planet that controls your sexual energy, will be at odds with your sign for most of this year making you quick to defend yourself. You will get angry easily. You will feel irritated with others. Hmmmm. Not good. Fortunately, with so many other favourable influences, this is nothing you can’t handle. Just know that this is there. HOME AND FAMILY This is a great year for home and family. It’s an excellent year to explore real-estate negotiations by buying, selling or renting something bigger. It’s also good year to renovate your home. It’s also a good time to buy things for your home so that you feel richer at home. It will be easy to borrow money to do this by getting a mortgage or a loan. In fact, this is the best year to borrow money in 11 years! Furthermore, the overall tone of your home in terms of happiness and family relationships will be positive this year. Family members will be easy going and generous to each other. You might also entertain more; you might have meetings in your home of clubs or groups to discuss something or do a particular activity. You might also have someone from another country live in your home. You will definitely have a warm feeling in your tummy this year. “God bless us everyone!” A SNEAK PEEK BEYOND 2016 In 2017, you will travel more than usual. You might also go back to school or take advanced training because something will happen that changes your view of the world. In 2018, lucky Jupiter will be at the top of your chart boosting your reputation in the eyes of others. At this time, you will also begin to dismantle much of what you created since around 2005. In 2020, you will start off on a new path of growth and development – a major change! Fear not because lucky Jupiter will be in your sign for all of 2021, giving you divine protection and attracting good fortune to you. Increased earnings in 2022 will be sweet. Take note that the year 2023 is the best year in over a decade to pursue real-estate negotiations or to improve your home. (This year, 2016, is a good year – but not the best year.) This blessing to your real estate and home continues into 2024. By 2025, a major vacation will be your reward. Do something that really turns your crank!

“In two decades, I’ve lost a total of 789 pounds. I should be hanging from a charm bracelet.” Erma Bombeck (Feb. 21, 1927 – April 22, 1996)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) DOES YOUR PAST PREDICT YOUR FUTURE? Life was a scramble from 1991 to 1993 because you were on the move. Things were changing fast because you gave up relationships, friendships, residences and possessions as you barreled into your future to begin a whole new world in 1994. (Gasp.) That was a pivotal year! At that time, you began a new 30-year cycle that will not be completed until 2023. However, in 1999, more changes were at hand – and in the following two years, you changed your residence or job or both. Life was a whirlwind! By 2002, your focus on children, vacations, romance, love affairs, the arts and sports gave you a lift. In 2005, you benefited from the wealth and resources of others and perhaps, some of you received an inheritance. You finally got recognition for your talents by 2007. Perhaps it was this increasing recognition that created problems with partnerships in 2009-10. (That was a slog!) Many relationships ended then, which meant you had to get along on less in 2011-12. Last year, opportunities at work were a blessing.

And Here It Is ---- 2016! WEALTH, CAREER AND REPUTATION This is a stellar year for your job, your career and your reputation among your peers. You will be proud to receive kudos, praise, recognition and promotions. Some will graduate. Some will get married. Someone might have a long awaited child. Others will try self-employment. Many of you will enjoy wonderful success in your job. Essentially, your cherished dreams can come true! There could be some evidence of failure and disappointment, but this will be minor. If you do experience disappointment – just move on because this is your hour to shine! Do not dwell on failure. Look at what you have achieved and build on this. This year is also a time of heavy responsibilities. It’s not time to sit back and rest on your laurels. One of the reasons you are powerful this year is because you have a strong sense of who you are and what you can do – finally! This year will also give you the greatest opportunity to make a positive impression on important people and the world in general. For most of you, this will be one of the most rewarding times in your life because you’ve earned it. Give

yourself a pat on the back! Treat yourself to a pair of shoes that makes you want to dance! LOVE, PARTNERSHIPS AND FRIENDS You are the big winner in 2016, because not only will your career and reputation shine – in addition, you have lucky Jupiter sitting in your House of Partnerships and Marriage. Say no more! You will majorly score this year! This is an excellent year to get married. Quite likely, this person will be older, more established or richer; and they will bring joy in your life. This person could be from another country. Many of you will make friends with someone from a different background or a foreign country because whoever you encounter now will have a consciousness-expanding influence on you. You will learn from them. They will broaden your experience of the world. Indeed, because others benefit you so strongly this year, even lawyers, counsellors, doctors, consultants, astrologers (i.e. experts) will benefit you. This year, you feel confident and confidence is sexy! And so is success! Admittedly, you will have lots of responsibilities and will have to work hard. But you will enjoy relating to others now because you have nothing to hide. You are out there flying your colours! HOME AND FAMILY It’s important to protect your health this year because you might overextend yourself by working too hard since you are enjoying such success. It’s also important to focus on loved ones and family members because it’s easy to be distracted with your job, status, prestige and success. Gotta know what really matters. Obviously, marriage and partnerships are beautifully favoured. Your partner might earn more money, for example, which takes stress away from worrying about expenses. You will also find that partners are beneficial to you in a practical way – more helpful. They will also be a greater support in a psychological and emotional way as well. Family travels are more likely this year because you are keen to get out of town and expand your horizons. In fact, you will feel the travel bug very strong in 2016. You will also put a strong emphasis on education for family members and perhaps yourself as well this year. A SNEAK PEEK BEYOND 2016 “Show me the money!” This will be your theme for 2017 because this year, you will benefit from the wealth and resources of others. You can get a loan or a mortgage. You will also benefit from the use of things that other people own. Meanwhile, your career stands strong! Travel opportunities will continue to delight you in 2018, which is also a great year for higher education. In 2019, once again, you shine! (I’m not making this up.) Jupiter at the top of your chart brings kudos, promotions and acknowledgement from others. From 20212023, you will let go of much of what you created since 2008. You will streamline and downsize what is no longer relevant in your life. Nevertheless, the year 2022 is sweet because lucky Jupiter will be in your sign again. In 2023, you begin a new 30-year path. You will be optimistic because you will be eager to go forward into something new. The year 2025 is fantastic for real-estate deals. This is your opportunity to move to bigger and better home, as well as enjoy one, mutually generous, enhanced relationships with family members.

The Sanskrit language is considered to be the language of the Chakras - the energy centres within the body. Each Chakra vibrates at a different frequency and is related to different organs and glands in the body as well as different psychological traits. Sound and thought are of course vibration so when we chant Sanskrit mantras, we are stimulating the chakras which in turn creates healing effects on the physical, emotional, mental, and energy bodies. It is like we are giving our body a massage from the inside out, bringing benefits that include deepened breathing, increased oxygen levels in the body, improved blood and lymph circulation and increased prana (life force energy) that can be used for rejuvenation of the organs, glands, and cells. Chanting also calms the emotions, helps to silence subconcious mind chatter and eliminates negative thought patterns. Like a stone thrown into a pool of water, the sound vibrations create ripples that continue to circle outwards from the centre point. This rippling action begins within our own being and continues outward into the world. When we chant mantras, especially traditional mantras called maha mantras (great mantras) that have been chanted for thousands of years, we connect with the vibration of the chant that is part of the cosmic weave of the universe.

Tapping into this energy strengthens the effects of the mantra for ourselves, as well as adds to this unviversal energy. When we chant with others, this energy is amplified even more. Though you may see translations of mantras, the meaning really comes through the japa (repetition) as you begin to experience the effects of the mantra firsthand. These effects are strenthened when we hold a specific intention while chanting a mantra One way to work with mantras for healing is a 21 day mantra practice. With this practice, you work with a specific mantra to support your intention for healing, chanting the mantra as many times as possible every day for 21 days. Chant the mantra as you move through your daily activities, and also consider setting aside a specific time each day to sit in stillness and repeat the mantra. Be sure to hold your intention in your awareness as you chant. Overtime the mantras we work with become part of our own energy field. The more we practice a mantra, the more likely it is to pop into our heads in times of need, like a dear friend who just happens to call out of the blue when we are having a challenging time. Cowichan Agriculture Training Program:

One Year Down And Ready For More!

his past spring the Cowichan Green Community (CGC) embarked upon an exciting new project, the Cowichan Agriculture Training (CAT) program, with the aim to build the capacity of local agriculture in our community. Though the issues with our current food system are multifaceted, one area that is clearly lacking support is foundational level training for folks interested in working in the agricultural sector, particularly small to mid-scale agricultural systems geared to meet local market demands. The program is a Project Based Labour Market Training initiative funded by the Province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation. Partnering with Global Vocational Services, our local WorkBC agency, we were able to recruit eight eligible and interested participants. These participants receive a living allowance as well and a broad range of learning opportunities and a variety of sector related certifications. We also partnered with farms in the area who had expressed interest in hosting participants for their farm placement component of the training. This program has so much potential. Training more

folks in agriculture benefits both the individual and the community. Studies show that we are rapidly losing these skills in our communities as the average age for farmers is over 50, and there has been a steady decrease over the past few decades in new folks coming into the sector. It’s so important to support and nurture those with an interest in farming because we all need to eat, and it’s foolhardy to be completely reliant on imported foods! If you are interested in learning more about the CAT program, please don’t hesitate to contact us at 250-748-8506. Ask for Stephanie! If you are a local farmer or otherwise involved in the sector you are invited to join us at our upcoming AgCafé events: January 13 and 27, 9:30-12 (drop-in) in the meeting room at The Station (360 Duncan st). Come meet the CAT team and chat about themes and issues that concern you! Not a CGC member yet? ogs use their tails for balance and communicating. They are used as rudders and private part covers. There are breeds of dogs that have their tails docked for aesthetic reasons, (originally for safety reasons) and these dogs have a hard time expressing themselves fully to their species. Some breeds of dogs are born with shorted/deformed tails and they can have their own health issues and special needs. A dog wagging her tail is not necessarily expressing friendliness, the whole body stance and facial expression needs to be considered before

the tail can be taken as the friendly indicator. A wagging tail is sharing the dog’s scent with you. She may be saying “stay away, you’re frightening me”. Other dogs can smell her fear and will respond appropriately. The dog’s butt is a huge source of information for other dogs. They have a scent gland on the outside of the tail and two more inside the anus itself. Other dogs learn about health, sex, age, and much more I’m sure from these glands. A wagging tail is simply a way of sharing the information. The tail may wag at full mast over the back indicating high arousal or it may wag level with the ground as a friendly hello to friends. A tail may also flick tightly between the legs to indicate submission. We have also learned that a happy dog will wag more to the right and an uncertain dog will wag slightly to the left. Watch your dog’s tail as she trots, plays, approaches new things. There is a lot being said and it is a language you can learn. Winter Care for Homeless Cats

Y

ou have seen them all over the Valley – homeless cats. By the dumpsters, in the fields in farm country, crossing roads at night, in parking lots behind apartment buildings, are all places homeless cats will be seen looking for food and shelter in a tough world. You hear them at night, fighting for territory and food and breeding rights. Add some winter weather to that life and it is no wonder these cats die so young, from injuries, disease and starvation. 80% of their kittens will die in the first year. The survivors will have a lifespan of maybe 3 years, compared to 12 to 15 years for a domestic cat. There is a way to give these cats a long and healthy life. Feed them. Every day. In the same place. At the same time. Half a cup of dry food every day will keep one of these cats healthy. Add a supply of clean water. Now add a shelter. Make a feral cat shelter (Google it) and place it somewhere protected from dogs and “your” cats will soon find it. Put in some catnip to encourage them. They will be able to stay dry and warm in the worst weather and avoid hypothermia.

If you are already feeding cats (bless you!) you might be able to tell if they have already been fixed. Many ferals have the tip of one ear trimmed off when they are fixed, so they do not get trapped again, taken to the vet and sedated, only to find they are already fixed. Most cats fixed locally, ear tipped or not, will have a tattoo in one ear, proof that he or she is already fixed. Unless those cats are sick or injured all they will need is food, water, and shelter to be able to live a long healthy life. Once your cats have learned that dinner is coming regularly they will stay around and wait for it. Now it becomes possible to catch those cats. Call your local feral cat rescue – in the Valley that is Cowichan Cat Rescue – to arrange for those cats to be trapped and fixed at the first sign of warmer Spring weather, before the first Spring kittens get born. You can now congratulate yourself for saving these defenseless homeless cats and kittens from untold suffering!

Alpha Awry: Parenting Upside Down When I was a new parent, I was eager to do ‘the right thing.’ I read books by parenting gurus who advocated giving lots of choices. In my zealot fashion, I took this to the extreme and gave my daughter choices about everything. Should we go home for lunch or stay at the beach? Do you want yogourt for breakfast or cereal? With your cereal, would you prefer rice milk, soy milk, almond milk, or cow’s milk? You get the idea. Whose decisions should these really be?

All this choice did awaken my daughter’s preferences, so that even when I didn’t ask her, she was sure to let me know what she did, and what she didn’t want. All of this ‘wanting’ can make for a very demanding child and a harried parent. Many parents today are consulting their child’s preferences, and many children are telling their parents what to do, whether they’re asked for their opinion or not. We are raising a generation of alpha children,

who are bossy, controlling, prescriptive and demanding. These kids are very difficult to parent and to teach. Raising an alpha child can be a very exhausting endeavor. And while the child seems to be in charge, they are often very anxious, very frustrated, sometimes aggressive, and highly resistant to direction and guidance. Thankfully, when we regain our rightful position as the warm, caring provider they need, often the alpha instincts melt and we can once again have a child who will follow our lead and rest in our care. allowing each child to be in a process, and a unique way of approaching problems. It is also one of the many ways that the curriculum is brought through hands on experience, allowing their whole body to absorb the material being taught. Students through the grades are asked to hone their skills with knitting needles, crochet hooks, and sewing needles. Because the students are always working with natural fibres and materials that are of the earth, they also have the opportunity to experience, in a tactile way, the energies of a lamb’s wool, the silkiness of cotton, the warmth of fibres and fabric. Other aspects of the curriculum include carding, spinning and weaving wool, along with growing flowers and plants in the school gardens for dyeing the wool. These tasks allow the students to experience the cyclical and connected nature of the handwork activities with the materials being used. The handwork projects in the Waldorf Curriculum are formative, and are geared to meet the child at every age, bringing forth just the right amount of challenge and complexity. Children learn to bring concentration, care and beauty to their work. An impatient child may see right before their eyes the mistakes that are a result of rushing through, and a child that is sluggish may find themselves internally awaked and excited by the results of their own two hand’s good work. Through these projects students master counting, tracking, addition, subtraction, use of fractions, following and designing patterns, as well as understanding the origins of the materials being used. The children delight in their

Knitting And Handwork In The Waldorf School Kitting and handwork are age old activities that predate the distractions of modern life such as computers, television, and electronic devices. Braiding weaving and knotting with yarns, strings and ropes are seen in all cultures around the world. Having the ability to knit, darn, sew and felt were, (and in some places continue to be) a part of the daily tasks, a way to make and mend clothing and textiles, as well as a way to pass the time. Perhaps little did our ancestors know how much they were also building brain capacity, insulating and strengthening right/left brain neurological pathways, as well as increasing their dexterity and ability for problem solving when they took to this daily work. In the Waldorf Curriculum, handwork is a fundamental and important part of integrating many subjects of study including history, mathematics, creative problem solving, and geometry. Handwork is a practical art that enlivens and awakens the tactile senses, and which gives us an experience of form and shaping. Within the context of what, and how we teach handwork at the Waldorf School, students experience the manifestation of an important internal journey,

completed works of art, which then also serve practically in their lives. From soft woolen animal toys, to flute cases, crayon pouches, pencil cases, hats, socks, and dolls. Each project has special significance for the child, and their internal development. At Sunrise Waldorf School the handwork room is a beautifully lit, warm and colourful room. It houses our student’s most stunning handwork and is the home of our incredibly passionate and knowledgeable handwork teacher. If you are interested in hearing more about why Waldorf Education works, contact Chantey Dayal – Admissions Coordinator for a tour or a meeting today. 250.743.7253
