MANAGER’S COMMENTS
PAUL HART THE EXCLUSIVE VIEWS OF THE BOSS DIRECT FROM THE HOME DRESSING ROOM. Firstly this evening I would like to thank you all for the tremendous welcome which you gave myself, Dougie Freedman and John Pemberton at the game on Saturday. It made us all feel very much a part of this great club and was a great start for everyone involved. Before the game on Saturday we had only three days to work with the players out on the training pitch but 4 | PALACE vs BRISTOL CITY
it soon became clear to us that they were a strong bunch and that was evident during the afternoon to gain all three points. From the moment I came in I could see they were determined to achieve our target come the end of the season and they went out and proved it. I was delighted for everyone involved and the performance was excellent .
Whenever you play Sheffield United you know you have been in a game and you have to do the basics and we did that. We also knew at the same time we had to play some decent stuff, which we did. All over the pitch we had to do what was necessary and the boys should take great credit for that. We were aware that their set pieces were always going to be a threat and we did well defending against them in difficult situations when they were pressing for the equaliser. We were pleased that we kept the one goal advantage but it was also encouraging to see the lads create many other chances throughout the game so it would not have been surprising if we hadn’t finished the afternoon with a bigger winning margin. We have only been here a week today so time working with the lads has come and gone very quickly but we haven’t attempted to make big changes. There doesn’t need to be major changes, we are here until May 2nd and the job is to keep this club in the division. There will be some ups and downs but we are confident in our ability to stay in the Championship. This evening I would like to welcome Gary Johnson, his squad and all who have travelled from Bristol City. The two clubs have had some

interesting meetings over the last few seasons including the incident on the opening day of the season when the club had a perfectly good goal disallowed and this led to a massive story in the media. All this is behind us now and it is all about this evening and focussing on putting another good performance on and working hard as a group to help reach our targets. We as a Club – players and supporters must stay strong and work hard in our efforts to achieve our objectives. The players really did appreciate the great support you showed at the weekend and I cannot stress how important this is going to be over the coming weeks. Once again, thank you very much for your continuing support.

CAPTAIN’S COMMENT
SHAUN DERRY SHAUN DERRY GIVES HIS LATEST COMMENTS DIRECT FROM THE DRESSING ROOM FOR THE MATCHDAY PROGRAMME.
Saturday’s result was hugely positive for us. The fact that the other teams around us all won, or at least picked up a point means that we have been able to stay right in the mix and not get separated from the pack. It was a tough game for us. Sheffield United never make it easy for you because Kevin Blackwell has got them well organised and every player in that team understands their role very well. But I thought that we rightly deserved the three points at the end. We created the better chances, played the better football and had a better work ethic so to come away from it with anything less than a win would have been disappointing. And it was good to get the win for the new gaffer. It is always nice to start on the front foot and going into this busy run of games we can take a lot of confidence from it. March will see us play a total of seven games and have a match every Saturday and Tuesday, so we are going to have to draw upon every ounce of energy and determination that we can to make sure we take the most of every opportunity. There are some tough games in there, but we are fully capable of coming away from every one of them with a positive result. It will be tiring and I am sure the lads will feel the effects of it, but it is important that every player now gets his head down and focuses on the challenge ahead. If we prepare right, recover well
“TONIGHT’S GAME IS OUR GAME IN HAND AND IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE MAKE IT COUNT BECAUSE THREE POINTS WILL BOLSTER OUR CHALLENGE TO GET TO SAFETY” from every game and keep to what the gaffer wants then we can come out of it on a high. I think you all saw glimpses of the style of football the gaffer wants us to play on Saturday. At times we played some super stuff and that was only after three days of training, so there
is definitely room for us to improve on that front and become a good footballing side. But results are key. Tonight’s game is our game in hand and it is important that we make it count because three points will bolster our challenge to get to safety. We all know that games against Bristol City have, in the past, proven to be exciting affairs. The atmosphere is always fantastic, both sets of players put in everything for their teams and there has been a little bit of controversy thrown in for good measure. They will be coming here today looking to respond immediately from that heavy defeat at the weekend, which quite possibly makes them a different prospect. Egos will be dented, and as any professional will tell you, all that matters is putting it behind you with a good result in the following game. But a win today will put us two points off City and drag other teams around us in the battle. So we will have to be on top form today, and so will all of you. On Saturday the noise in the ground was superb, and really had its effect as Sheffield began to put some pressure on us late on, and I hope that it can be the same tonight. Enjoy the game Shaun

FANS’ SPONSORSHIP HELP PAINT THE TOWN DAFFODIL YELLOW FOR MARIE CURIE CANCER CARE
FOOTBALL UNITED By Tom Harverson, The Football League
Marie Curie Cancer Care is asking everyone to help paint the town yellow by wearing a daffodil pin this March for its Great Daffodil Appeal. Money raised from the appeal will provide more free nursing care for people with a terminal illness in their own homes and the charity’s hospices. Research shows around 65 per cent of people would like to die at home if they had a terminal illness, with a sizeable minority opting for hospice care. However, more than 50 per cent of cancer deaths still occur in hospital, the place people say they would least like to be. Marie Curie Nurses make spending your final days at home possible, and the charity expects to provide care to around 29,000 terminally ill patients in the community and in its hospices this year. Wendy Hutchinson, Marie Curie Nurse, explains why your support is so crucial. She said: “Every March, the Great Daffodil Appeal is our chance to join together and help make it possible for more terminally ill patients to spend their last days surrounded by loved ones, with all the comforts of home close by. During the Great Daffodil Appeal, I always know that behind every daffodil pin I see there is a story – a story of love, of laughter, of very special moments spent together. So when you pick up your daffodil pin this March, I’d like to ask you to take a moment to think about your own story – the one that made you want to support Marie Curie Cancer Care. No matter what your reason is, I hope you will join me in supporting the Great Daffodil Appeal this year. Without your help, Marie Curie Nurses like me would simply be unable to care for people with terminal cancer when it really matters the most.”

PHYSIO
the club’s physiotherapist NIGEL COX ROUNDS UP ALL THE NEWS FROM WITHIN THE TREATMENT ROOM. Welcome to this evening’s game. What a great start for the new regime on Saturday with the win over Sheffield Utd. Feelings were running high after the game and there is a steely determination amongst all of us to secure the points required to keep this club in this division. If the boys can perform consistently as well as they did at the weekend, then hopefully that achievement can be attained from our remaining games. Injuries and suspensions will play a big part in determining the strength of the squad in each individual game, and this will prove particularly important to us, as we are competing with a small senior squad from the outset. Fortunately for tonight’s game, as we lose one squad member to suspension, we are able to welcome one back from injury, as Neil Danns returns to action following his recent lower back problems. His high energy game will no doubt provide a welcome boost to the new manager.
BELOW: Paddy McCarthy has suffered a setback from recovery of his shoulder injury.
It was good to see that Claude Davis managed to come through the game on Saturday despite needing a great deal of work on his lower back in the days leading up to the game. His suspension will now give us another prolonged opportunity to help alleviate and settle the problem. Some disappointing news to report, is that Paddy McCarthy has suffered a setback in his recovery from his shoulder surgery. He had achieved most of the goals set for his return and indeed was all set for a run out, scheduled for the reserves. Unfortunately for him though he was experiencing pain in contact on occasion that we deemed necessary for investigation. To cut a long story short....... he saw a consultant on Friday afternoon...... and was operated on that night ! It appears that one of the fixation screws in his bone graft may well have been the cause of his problem and has therefore now been removed. The procedure was a minor one and as a result, it is hoped that this will only be a slight setback, and that Paddy will return to action towards the end of this month. Enjoy the game.

Yes, this meeting always seems to have a habit of throwing up fierce debate and you would be hard pushed not to expect another similarly bizarre turn of events to effect tonight’s game in some way. Quite what could beat last year’s image of Freddie Sears seeing his perfectly legitimate goal ruled out is beyond us, but you would not put it past this fixture to come up with it. Putting that to one side and looking at the purely football aspect of the Crystal Palace/Bristol City history and it is usually a case of home advantage counts.
In the past three seasons both sides have shown a greater propensity for beating the other at their home grounds, with Palace winning four, drawing once and losing once in their last six games against the Reds at Selhurst. Bristol show the same consistency at Ashton Gate with four wins and two draws from their last six against Palace. So far this season it has been their home ground where Bristol have enjoyed greater success with seven wins, eight draws and three defeats – however their 5-2 defeat at home to

Doncaster on Saturday is somewhat of an exception to that rule. On their travels though, a full compliment of points has only been achieved on two occasions – their last, was midway through December when they beat Leicester City 3-1. Since then they have managed just two league wins in 15 games, having drawn seven and lost six.
THE MANAGER: GARY JOHNSON
It is an increasingly rare occurrence for a club to commit a manager to long term contracts for the simple reason that as football moves its roots deeper and deeper into the money driven culture of fast success and lofty expectancy, the phrase long term is fast becoming unsuited to managerial appointments. The documented fate of the world’s richest club’s former manager is a prime example of the type of fragility that comes with a taking the helm of a professional club. His demise seemed to confirm nothing more than that written contracts are offered, seemingly, as a formality and that a manager’s real length of service is determined purely by the stretch of time that results are equal to the expectation. So one could look upon Bristol City’s decision to offer Gary Johnson a five year contract with a raised eyebrow and a mix of scepticism and intrigue. For although the job Johnson has done at Ashton Gate has been nothing less than worthy of the club’s backing, one is drawn to the notion that to take a contract at face value in modern football is nothing less than naïve. Of course this could be wrong and Johnson stays for the full term with neither him or the club ever voicing any utterance of regret, but let’s put it this way – it would be pleasantly surprising. But right now, with his side sitting just five points off the Play Offs, Johnson rightly deserves the plaudits that have come his way and is showing every bit the manager that deserves to hold onto those five years.

[2] Bradley Orr Position: Defender Nationality: English Joined Newcastle United in the summer of 2004 initially as a midfielder but has since become a regular in defence at right-back He began his career with Everton before moving to St James Park where he skippered the club’s reserve side. After a short loan spell with Burnley where he made four starts, he moved to the Reds in 2004 having never made a professional appearance for the Magpies. But the decision proved the right one as he now has over 200 appearances to his name for Bristol and has scored ten goals.
[3] Jamie McAllister Position: Defender Nationality: Scottish Another free transfer, McAllister signed from Hearts in August 2006. He began his career in his native Scotland with Queen of the South where he spent three seasons before moving on to Aberdeen. After 117 appearances for the Dons he signed for Livingstone in 2003 but spent just one year there before moving on to Hearts in 2004. After two years there though he
had only managed 47 appearances and so moved to Bristol where he has since made over 100 appearances and scored twice.
[4] Liam Fontaine Position: Defender Nationality: English The Fulham Academy product signed on loan from the Cottagers in January 2006 for the remainder of the season, but made the deal permanent in the summer of that year, with an undisclosed fee agreed with Fulham. He previously played under Gary Johnson at Yeovil Town, whilst on loan, and has also played for Scottish club Kilmarnock on a similar basis. Became centre stage when his goal against Wolves in November left his manager Gary Johnson red-faced - having previously told his defender he would “bare my backside in Burton’s window” if he found the net.
[6] Louis Carey Position: Defender Nationality: Scottish The versatile defender, who is a product of the club’s youth system, is now in his second spell at the club. He first began in 1995 where he started at right-back, but he soon
found a new home in central defence. He then left the club in the summer of 2004 after rejecting a new contract and instead joined Coventry City. But he failed to settle in the Midlands and was back at Ashton Gate just six months later. In March 2008 he made his 500th appearance for the club, becoming only the fifth player in the club’s history to reach that feat.
[7] Marvin Elliott Position: Midfielder Nationality: English The 25 year old signed for Bristol City in the summer of 2007 for an undisclosed compensation fee after his Lions contract expired. The tough-tackling, energetic midfielder began his football career with Millwall at the age of 12 and went on to enjoy four years at the Den, making 144 appearances and scored three times before deciding to move on to Ashton Gate. In his first season with the Reds he enjoyed a regular starting spot and made 47 starts, but the following year starts were a little harder to come by and made just 24. But this year he looks to be back in favour with just under 30 starts already to his name.
[9] David Clarkson Position: Striker Nationality: Scottish Clarkson joined Bristol in the summer for an undisclosed fee from Motherwell where he had begun his career, played over 200 games and scored just one shy of 50 goals. An irregular goalscorer, his past seasons have been a mixed bag of returns. In the two seasons before he arrived at Ashton Gate he had scored 12 and 13 goals respectively. But before then he had struggled for a good run of goals and seasons went by with two, four and three goals to his name. In his short time with Bristol he is again struggling to recapture the scoring form that earned him his move with three goals from his 19 appearances so far. 16 | PALACE vs BRISTOL CITY

[37] Chris Iwelumo Position: Striker Nationality: Scottish Iwelumo, who joined Bristol on a month’s loan in February, started his career with St Mirren in Scotland, before then playing in Denmark with Aarhus Fremad. He returned to England with Stoke and then had success with Colchester as well as loan spells with York, Cheltenham and Brighton and a time in Germany with Alemannia Aachen. He moved to Charlton in 2007, but managed just one season before moving on to Wolves ahead of the 08/09 campaign.
[11] Paul Hartley Position: Midfielder Nationality: Scottish The experienced central midfielder has enjoyed a long and varied career that has taken in no less than nine clubs, with all but two of them based in Scotland. He began his career with Hamilton Academical but moved after two years to Millwall. From there he played for Raith Rovers, Hibernian, Greenock Morton, St Johnstone, Heart of Midlothian and Celtic before finally signing for City in the summer.
[14] Cole Skuse Position: Midfielder Nationality: English A product of City’s Academy, Skuse made his senior debut as a substitute at Colchester in 2005 and signed a professional contract a month later to keep him at the club until 2008/09. Despite being linked with a move away to Reading in 2007 he stayed with the Reds and committed his future by signing a new deal this summer.
[17] Ivan Sproule Position: Midfielder Nationality: Irish Sproule signed in the summer of 2007 from Hibernian for an undisclosed six-figure fee after three years at Easter Road. The lightning-quick winger was a real fans’ favourite at Hibs where he made 71 appearances and scored 12 goals, which is a goal record he has yet to better at Ashton Gate with his six goals from just over 100 games.
[22] Dean Gerken Position: Goalkeeper Nationality: English Gerken signed for Bristol in the summer for an undisclosed fee from Colchester United. The highly rated keeper began his career with the U’s in 2002 and made his debut two years later before becoming the club’s first choice goalkeeper the year after that. He went on to spend seven years at the now named Weston Homes Community Stadium making over 100 appearances. Following Colchester’s relegation last year he was moved out on loan to Darlington for a month before returning when the League Two side went into administration.
[31] Danny Haynes Position: Striker Nationality: English A product of Charlton Athletic’s Academy, Haynes was snapped up by Ipswich Town during the 2005/06
season where, over a course of four seasons he struggled to really make an impact. After a first season return of four goals, he improved marginally in 2006/07 season with seven and moved out to Millwall on loan when he managed two goals from five games. On his return to Portman Road he struggled for games, with goals proving even harder to come by with seven in 07/08 and then none from his 24 games last year. Following his move to Bristol in the summer he has enjoyed a promising early return of seven goals from 21 games.
[33] Lewin Nyatanga Position: Defender Nationality: Welsh Signed from Derby County in the summer for an undisclosed fee, Nyatanga has slipped right in at the heart of Bristol’s defence. The Burton-born defender came through Derby’s youth ranks and played for them over 60 times through a four-year spell. During that time he spent a period on loan at Sunderland, and three spells with Barnsley, with his final spell at Oakwell the most successful with 41 games and one goal to his name. STARMAN: NICKY MAYNARD At only 18 Nicky Maynard broke onto the professional scene during the 05/06 season for Crewe Alexandra where he quickly set himself apart as a highly effective striker. He only managed 59 appearances in his two seasons at Crewe Alexandra, where he was brought through the youth academy, but he still produced a return of 37 goals - and that was following an Under 18 season where he scored 27 goals. It was actually during his second season as a Crewe professional where he managed to establish himself as one of their main goal threats. During the 06/07 season he formed a partnership with Luke Varney where the two proved to be one of the most productive partnerships in League One with a total of 33 goals between them. After Varney moved on to Charlton, the mantle of main goalscoring threat was handed over to Maynard, but he suffered a serious blow when he fractured his fibula, which kept him out for four months. On his return he initially struggled to find the same form with only two goals from his first two months back, but by February he got back into form and once again discovered his shooting boots by scoring in seven consecutive games. In the summer of that year he was snapped up by Bristol City for a club record fee of £2.25m in a move that he called “perfect for me”. In his three seasons at Ashton Gate he has again proved his prowess in front of goal in this division with 36 goals to his name. Already this season he has enjoyed a profitable return of ten goals from 30 games. 18 | PALACE vs BRISTOL CITY

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas starred for Doncaster as they eased to a CocaCola Championship victory over Bristol City at Ashton Gate. Emmanuel-Thomas was on the scoresheet twice, as was Billy Sharp, for the visitors while Bradley Orr scored the City goals before rounding off the scoring with an own-goal. Doncaster took the lead after just two minutes when Sharp wandered through the defence and slid the ball across the goal for on-loan Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel-Thomas to slot the ball home. Bristol City were back on level terms after nine minutes when Jamal Campbell-Ryce’s cross from the left was converted by Orr from close range. Parity lasted just three minutes though with Rovers taking the lead from their next attack. James Coppinger ran down the right before chipping the ball into the box for Sharp to control and hammer into the bottom corner. In what was turning out to be a remarkable opening 15 minutes the hosts again drew level through Orr. Campbell-Ryce was again the provider, this time from the right, as his first-time cross was met by Orr at the far post. City could have taken the lead after 21 minutes when Nicky Maynard volleyed the ball against the crossbar from the edge of the area as
Doncaster goalkeeper Neil Sullivan watched on. Robins goalkeeper Dean Gerken made two brilliant saves in quick succession. He saved a Coppinger attempt with his feet and then pushed Gareth Roberts’ shot past the post. Sharp then added his second after 34 minutes when he ran on to Emmanuel-Thomas’ precise through ball and drilled the ball into the bottom corner. Doncaster added a fourth two minutes before the break when Coppinger’s corner found Emmanuel-Thomas at the back post. The 19-year-old took a touch before drilling the ball through the legs of Gerken. Campbell-Ryce tried to get the Robins back in the game with just 19 seconds of the second half gone when he drove forward but his shot drifted wide of the upright. Sullivan made a fine save from an Orr volley but despite the hosts’ pressure, Doncaster extended their lead with a fortunate strike after 61 minutes. Oster crossed the ball from the right and Orr stuck out a leg and diverted the ball past his own goalkeeper. With 14 minutes to play, Coppinger could have got his name on the scoresheet but his left-footed drive went wide of the upright as the visitors continued to stream forward.

JANUARY 1970 A couple of days after the Walsall F.A. Cup game, Palace announced that Chelsea forward Bobby Tambling would be joining the club on a three match loan, a system that had recently been introduced, and he made his debut in the away fixture at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday 10th. His effect in the team was virtually immediate as he engineered goals for Cliff Jackson and Gerry Queen to twice give Palace the lead only for Jeff Astle to equalise on both occasions to send the teams in level at halftime. Lacking match fitness Tambling ran out of steam in the second half and Palace held on to a point until ten minutes from time when Astle completed his hat-trick firing home

janUARY 1980 The Third Round of the F.A. Cup handed the Eagles a trip to the Vetch Field on Saturday 5th January to face Swansea City again missing the injured Ken Sansom against a team bristling with experience and led by player-manager John Toshack. The home team made all the running from the kick-off and took the lead when David Giles escaped down the wing and Toshack then exchanged passes before slotting the ball home past John Burridge. That was the score until sixteen minutes from time when an inswinging corner from Steve Kember was misjudged by the Swansea keeper and it went straight

through defenders but Palace still remained above the bottom two. The night before Palace had also faced West Bromwich Albion, this time in the BBC television programme Quiz Ball. Bert Head had tried to get Palace fan Ronnie Corbett in their four-man team but, in the end, had to accept the BBC nomination of Alfie Bass. Bobby Tambling made his home debut the following Saturday in the fixture against Nottingham Forest and again stamped his mark setting up opportunities that unfortunately the forwards failed to capitalise upon. They paid the price twenty minutes from time when a half-cleared corner fell to Forest player Bob Chapman who blasted the ball home off the underside of the bar, however six minutes from time David Payne exchanged passes with Gerry Queen and then cut in to equalise from a narrow angle. After the game the Forest manager joined his Sheffield Wednesday counterpart in feeling that Palace had broken the spirit of the loan system that they thought should only be used to benefit struggling lower division clubs.
JANUARY 1990 Portsmouth came to Selhurst Park for the F.A. Cup Third Round tie on Saturday 6th January and took the lead with their first attack five minutes before half-time when Guy Whittingham headed home past Nigel Martyn. At the break Geoff Thomas, who had been on the bench for the last five games, came on for the injured Jeff Hopkins and in the fifty-eighth minute he followed up a partially cleared free kick to sweep in the equaliser. With a replay looking likely Palace launched one more assault on the Pompey goal as Andy Gray battled his way into their penalty area only to be brought down by Mark Chamberlain. The midfield player got up to take the penalty kick and blasted the spot-kick home and our Cup run had begun.! Gray’s absence by suspension in the next game, a League fixture at Coventry seven days later, paved the way for Thomas’s return to first team duty. A somewhat drab encounter
viewed by less than eleven thousand at Highfield Road saw a Palace side hold their hosts, who were lacking in confidence, to a goalless encounter until five minutes from time when a long punt upfield by keeper Steve Ogrizovic foiled the offside trap as David Speedie lived up to his name and ran through to drill a shot past Martyn for the only goal. The biggest home crowd of the season, 29,870, turned up at Selhurst Park on Saturday 20th January for the visit of League leaders Liverpool. The game will probably be remembered not so much for Liverpool’s goals in their 2-0 victory but for the incident involving injury to Palace players. Ian Rush had put Liverpool ahead in the eighth minute, his opportunity handed to him on a plate by Peter Beardsley who himself doubled the Reds advantage after sixty-three minutes. Just before this Ian Wright had nearly equalised but a last ditch tackle by Barry Vension denied him and left Wright with the first pain of a leg fracture. Twenty minutes from time the injured Wright and Alan Pardew, also suffering from a knock, were replaced by John Salako and Richard Shaw but on another part of the pitch Eddie McGoldrick was being put on a stretcher and would take no further part, leaving Palace to finish the game with only ten men.
came out to Paul Hinshelwood who drove it firmly back past goalkeeper Glen Letheren. Five minutes into the second half and the Eagles were level when Ian Walsh took the ball to the by-line, crossed into the penalty area where Terry Fenwick coolly shot home. There was no further scoring so the tie went into extra-time and in the first period Toshack put Swansea back in the lead but Palace were not to be denied however and with seven minutes remaining Vince Hilaire volleyed home a cross from David Swindlehurst that meant another meeting at the neutral venue of Ninian Park Cardiff! Back to League action on Saturday 12th January at The Baseball
Ground, Derby and the Eagles returned with both points from the relegation threatened club. After thirty minutes play a Terry Fenwick shot took a deflection off a Derby player, struck the crossbar and Walsh was alert enough to sweep in the rebound and then on the hour mark a fine cross from Swindlehurst was returned to the middle by Hilaire and Walsh was on hand to head home. Derby reduced the arrears but Palace stood firm under heavy pressure and County even then could not beat the sharp reflexes of a mud-caked John Burridge as Palace maintained their mid-table position.

into the net for the equalising goal and two minutes later Ian Walsh put Palace ahead when set free by a pass from Gerry Francis. Toshack had the last say eight minutes from time as he climbed above everybody else to ensure a replay back at Selhurst Park three days later. Injuries meant that Peter Nicholas, Gerry Francis and Mike Flanagan would also all be missing from the line-up and inside the first six minutes the Eagles found themselves two goals down having been undone by the wing play of Giles who set up the first and scored the second himself with a shot from twenty-five yards. Palace’s reply came fifteen minutes later when following a corner the ball

Robins has certainly impressed with limited resources, guiding the Tykes to wins over the likes of West Brom and Middlesbrough, as well as a spirited run in the League Cup only ended at the hands of the eventual winners in the fourth round. The side currently sits a comfortable eleventh, some eleven points clear of the relegation zone, a position clearly helped by the last two games in which the Tykes beat playoff aspirants Cardiff and Blackpool. CRYSTAL PALACE In what turned out to be Neil Warnock’s last game in charge, Palace travelled to the Keepmoat Stadium days after exiting the FA Cup to Aston Villa, to face Doncaster Rovers. The home side dominated the early proceedings and had the ball in the back of the net twice, only for both to be ruled out. They thought they had the breakthrough on 21 minutes when James Hayter headed past Speroni, but Billy Sharp was ruled offside as the official’s flag was raised. It was not long before another flag meant another goal cancelled out for Sean O’Driscoll’s side. Sharp once
again the reason as he pushed Hill to enable him to convert the chance. Donny didn’t have to wait long though before having the advantage and it was an excellent curling effort into the top corner past Speroni eight minutes before the break from James Coppinger. After a difficult first half Palace came out for the second the stronger of the two sides, and the Eagles’ fans didn’t have to wait long before celebrating an equaliser. On 67 minutes Ambrose did well to get away from his man and put in a fine cross which Djilali got on the end of and fired the ball into the net to bring the scores level.

ACTION REPLAY
Paul Hart’s reign as Crystal Palace manager began with a win thanks to Alan Lee’s close range strike on 23 minutes. In a game of few chances it was Palace who created the better, and they controlled much of the match with a flowing passing game. On 11 minutes a neat exchance between Lee and Nick Carle led to the Australia international with a shooting chance from 25 yards out, but on his right foot he allowed the covering defender to get a block in and deflect it harmlessly into Mark Bunn’s hands. Moments later Danny Butterfield was found on the edge of the box as a Palace corner was cleared, but unlike his cultured finishing in the FA Cup a few weeks back, he smashed this one high and wide. But he made amends on 22 minutes when his pinpoint cross from the right flank beat the first man and dropped to Lee, who managed to get infront of his marker and poke it past Bunn from six yards. The goal seemed to settle the Palace nerves and they could have extended their lead four minutes later when Carle fed Calvin Andrew with a nice through ball, but as he went to pull the trigger he hadn’t set himself properly and, on his left foot, he missed the target. The second half played out much the same as the first with Palace showing the greater attacking edge and chances proving a rarity. Ambrose may look back at his chance early on in the half when he was played through by a clever Derry header because he had much more time than he thought and could have taken a touch instead of striking
the ball first time from 15 yards into Bunn’s arms. And the same could be said for Lee, who had the best opportunity of the half to extend Palace’s lead on 57 minutes. Some brilliant work on the right flank from Carle afforded himself some space for a dangerous cross right across the six yard box. It was missed by Johnny Ertl, but found Lee at the back post. The Palace striker seemed surprised that it travelled all the way through to him, and as such he shot over the bar. Carle appeared to be really enjoying his football, and some more good work on the right drew a foul from Montgomery right underneath the linesman’s nose. Ambrose floated it in and it was met by Andrew at full stretch, but he jumped marginally too early and couldn’t keep his header down. On 82 minutes some very good

close-quarter passing led to a foul 25 yards out and Ambrose smashed a dipping effort that was well picked up by Bunn. The best Sheffield United could muster, despite some pressure towards the end, was a screwed Camara effort from 20 yards that flew harmlessly wide of Speroni’s post and two late Evans efforts. His first was a volley that he smashed into Camara in stoppage time, and his second was a dipping volley that thankfully bounced past the post. But Palace held on against some late United pressure to give Paul Hart his first win as Crystal Palace manager.

“I NEED TO KEEP LEARNING BECAUSE I AM BY NO MEANS A FINISHED ARTICLE AND THE ONLY WAY YOU LEARN IS BY PLAYING GAMES.” It would be fair to say that Lee Hill’s Crystal Palace career has, so far, been one experienced largely from the substitute’s bench. Since making his debut back in 2007, Lee has gone to make 39 further appearances; 20 of which have been from coming on from the bench. There is no doubt to his potential, nor to his inherent ability as an attacking full back, but for one reason or another he has yet to hold down the coveted first team left back slot for more than two consecutive games at a time. There have been moments that hinted he had finally made the step up, only for him to then accept a substitute’s spot in the next game. The main reason, of course, has been limited opportunity. The success of Clint Hill has understandably made it difficult to validate any decision not to play him there, while the versatility of Nathaniel Clyne has, on occasion, made it tactically necessary to again prefer him to Lee. But such is the determination of Lee that he has become well known for his hard work and all-or-nothing drive to succeed at the training ground. Earlier this season he accepted a loan move to League Two side Oldham to continue his footballing education in a competitive environment. “It was really, really good. I am 38 | PALACE vs BRISTOL CITY
at an age where I just need to play games. I can’t just be sitting on the bench every week, I need to play football all the time. “I need to keep learning because I am by no means a finished article at all, so I need to learn. “The only way you learn is by playing games, and if you don’t play games then you won’t be fit enough so when you come in you won’t be up to match speed straight away. “So I need to keep playing games, learning for one, and then keeping my fitness and sharpness up and just keep improving.” Before his move Lee was featuring regularly for Ronnie Jepson’s Reserve side, often taking on the captain’s armband and consistently putting in solid performances. But at Oldham he was granted the opportunity for regular first team football where every time he took to the field three points would be at stake. “That was the main difference because when I was on loan the team weren’t doing that well and obviously the whole point of the game is to win. “In League football you need to win to get the points to get up the table, so it was much more important than a Reserve game, which doesn’t mean anything really other than going out to play. You need to win.” On his return he was given an almost immediate chance to impress in the Palace first team with a start at

Swansea City and a full 90 minutes. It proved a successful return with Palace leaving the Liberty Stadium with a point and also a clean sheet. Since then he has earned four further starts and three more appearances from the bench, but even though it provided him with welcome experience, it has still not led to the regular run of games that he is after: “Obviously I didn’t start the season off playing but then I played a couple of games “It was nice to get in and I played when we were pushing for the top six. We won four of the games I played in, it was all going well and then we got that news about administration which was a kick in the teeth for the team. “I played in the Peterborough game, we won that, and since then I
haven’t really played but it has been good; although I would like to have started more games.” Now though there is fresh optimism. A new manager has arrived, which has meant new ideas and a new chance to impress. “It needed to be resolved sooner rather than later because you can’t, in the position we are in, not have a manager. And the people that have come in are the right people for this club too. “The manager has spoken to everyone and introduced himself. He said to me what he sees for me and what he likes about me. “And Dougie is always good with the youngsters. He is always there to help you when you want to learn and practice, and that is another really good thing. I have enjoyed that aspect because I want to keep learning and he will always be there, so it is great for me that he is back.” During Neil Warnock’s tenure Lee never started more than two games in a row, but now he is hoping to impress Paul Hart to get his chance in the first team. “Exactly. He [Paul Hart] has come in and put a completely different spin on it. He likes us to get the ball down and play, which is better for 42 | PALACE vs BRISTOL CITY

me because that is how I like to play football. “It has all started really well, because as you saw on Saturday we played some really good stuff and we also looked comfortable at the back and defended well. “The training has been a bit more intense and the ball has been put on the floor more. There are more passing drills at the start of training. “But whenever a new manager comes in everyone wants to impress because it is a new lease of life for some people, but it is great he has come in and freshened things up.” Today’s game marks a special moment in Lee’s career as it was against Bristol City in 2008 that he scored his first professional goal. In only his tenth appearance in a Crystal Palace shirt Lee shocked Ashton Gate with a finish more akin to an experienced centre forward than precocious young left back. Just after the hour mark Danny Butterfield’s throw-in was headed on by Shefki Kuqi to Ben Watson who poked it out wide to Hills. He let the ball run across his body before unleashing an expert volley into the far corner. His manic celebration is one of the great moments from that
eventful season, and it is clear that when looking back to that night the memories remain strong. “I have always liked playing against Bristol City. Obviously scoring against them was a great moment for me, but they are a good team and they play good football. “The matches against Palace have always been good matches so hopefully we can get one over them on Tuesday and get to that safety mark. “They didn’t have a good result at the weekend and we did so we will have the confidence, while they will be trying to make up for the result from the weekend, so I am sure it will be a fiery match.” That safety mark was brought three points closer following Saturday’s important 1-0 win against Sheffield United. “It was a massive result.” he replies when asked about its significance in achieving the aim of staying up this season. “It is a bit of a shame that every team around us won so it didn’t change much but still another three points to get closer to that mark, and we need to get back to that habit of winning again.”
