GEORGE

BURLEY THE MANAGER GIVES HIS EXCLUSIVE COMMENTS AHEAD OF EACH HOME GAME ONLY IN THE OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME. PICTURES: Neil Everitt CRYSTAL PALACE v SWANSEA CITY

I would firstly this afternoon like to welcome Brendan Rodgers, his players and all officials from Swansea City for our seventh home match of the season. The visit of Millwall a fortnight ago certainly lived up to all expectations with a closely fought derby match seeing us on the end of a narrow defeat. I couldn’t criticism in terms of our team’s work rate and play, we created opportunities and dominated the game but just could not convert the chances we had during the afternoon. We ended the game with ten men due to the dismissal of Claude Davis. I have watched it many times since and I still believe it was a harsh decision. Their player got booked for pulling him back, Claude was trying to move the player away and accidentally caught him in the process. I have since spoken to the referee but once the decision was made on the day we decided not to appeal although my view on the incident hasn’t changed. Four days later we made the journey to Norwich City and came away with all three points against a side who had made an excellent start to the season. We were obviously delighted with the result. MANAGERS’ COMMENTS_

THERE HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF POSITIVES AND I FEEL AS THE SEASON GOES ON THE TEAM WILL GET STRONGER, THE YOUNG PLAYERS WILL GET BETTER WITH EXPERIENCE AND WE HAVE A NUMBER OF KEY PLAYERS APPROACHING FULL FITNESS.

I thought we played some good football and we were pleased to have transferred some hard work on the training ground with our set pieces into a match situation and got both goals from these set plays. Last Saturday we were once again on the road for the long trip to Preston North End. This was a match which left us all frustrated because of the decisions which cost us on the day. But from a position of being 4-1 down we kept going until the end and showed a lot of character. It was disappointing WWW.TWITTER.COM/OFFICIAL_CPFC

after three goals to come away with nothing. There was aspects of our defending which we had to address but I couldn’t believe that the referee allowed them to take a free kick for the third goal from the wrong place and then they were awarded a penalty which should never have been given as Julian Bennett won the ball in the challenge. I have heard that many supporters had a difficult journey on the M6 during the trip up due to an accident which meant they missed

the start of the match. As always we appreciate your efforts to get to these away games and your support always plays an important role as it did in the second half last Saturday and at Carrow Road. It has been a tough start to the season so far but I think we all knew that after the Club being in administration it would take time to build the squad up again. There have been a number of positives and I feel as the season goes on the team will get stronger, the young players will get better with experience and we have a number of key players approaching full fitness. There is a good number of younger fans in the stadium this afternoon as it is one of our popular Family Days so hopefully you will all enjoy the occasion and some, making their first visit, will be returning here as Palace fans for many years to come. Get behind the lads from the first whistle and I hope you all enjoy the game.

CAPTAIN’S COMMENTS_

PADDY McCARTHY GIVES HIS LATEST COMMENTS DIRECT FROM THE DRESSING ROOM EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE MATCHDAY PROGRAMME.

CAPTAIN’S COMMENT It has been two weeks of mixed results and mixed performances for us, both at home and away. We started it with the disappointing result at home to Millwall in our last game here at Selhurst Park, and it was one that upset all the boys after the game. I actually thought we didn't play too badly, but we just lacked that cutting edge to take a lead and in the end we lost out to a sloppy goal. These are things that we are still working on to eliminate from our game because it is up to these incidents, mistakes, errors of judgement, call them what you will, that will cost us games in the future. Luckily though we didn't have to wait for too long until our next fixture to get over it, and what a way to do it. To go down 1-0 at half time to a team like Norwich who were flying high, we showed a huge amount of character and determination to, firstly, get ourselves back into the game and then go on and win it. As captain it is a pleasure to lead a team of eleven men who are all working hard for each other and whose only concern is getting back into the game. I think many would have written us off when we went 1-0 down, considering our indifferent away form this season, so it was doubly pleasing to prove our doubters wrong and take all three points. And it was a result that gave the side a lot of confidence. Perhaps the last few games have tested that at times, but by proving to, not only other people, but to ourselves that we have the quality, the ability and heart to come back from a goal down it has boosted WWW.TWITTER.COM/OFFICIAL_CPFC

everyone's belief in the dressing room. Unfortunately we couldn't build on it last weekend when we travelled to Preston, but again, although we might not have come away with anything, I thought we put in a performance full of positives. Again we went behind, and again we came back. The game could have been dead and buried by half time, but we didn't let that happen and the players worked tirelessly to get us back into it. Owen scored a stunner, Andy's header was class and Counago did well to earn us a penalty that Vaughny converted, so there are definitely goals in this team. Obviously I was disappointed with the result in the end, and I was disappointed with my own personal performance – it wasn't one of my best – but I was again pleased with our character. So although the result was not what we were looking for, the performance for me was one of our best this season because the team showed a different side to the team that started out this year. There is a belief, a strength of character; a never say die attitude that will only hold us in good stead going forward in this campaign. And we will take that into our game today with Swansea. They are clearly enjoying a good start to the season and are riding high in the Championship, but as I have said throughout our campaign, we will go into every game confident that we can win all three points. We will give Swansea the respect they are due because they are a fantastic footballing side, and I am expecting that there

will be spells in the game where they will control the possession, but we will be looking to counteract their game and go on to win the match. On one final note, our Fitness Coach, Chris 'Shorty' Short is leaving us after today's game to go on to pastures new. I would like to take this opportunity of wishing him all the best for the future. He has been fantastic for everyone at this club, he is great at his job and is a great person, which is the most important. He was fantastic with me when I was coming back from my shoulder injury, and he deserves every fortune that comes his way in the future. From me and all the lads, all the best Shorty.

HOT OFF THE PRESS_

TWO TRAINING GROUND APPOINTMENTS Following the Crystal Palace 2010 consortium takeover earlier in the year, the club are delighted to announce the following appointments within the business. Under 18s manager Gary Issott has been named Academy Manager at Crystal Palace Football Club. Issott, 34, has been at the club since October 2004 and already has the proud achievement of bringing a number of players through the academy set up into the professional game. "I am delighted to accept this position which is very highly regarded within football at this level of the game. "I have been really pleased to have had the opportunity to bring a number of players through to first team level and it's always nice to hear how well respected our academy is because there is a lot of hard work done by a large

number of people at all age groups. "Once again this season we have seen youngsters being given their debuts by the first team manager, and I am pleased to say we have a number coming through who could also get their chance. I am looking forward to working with our talented group of coaches to ensure the Crystal Palace academy continues to grow and home grown players continue to get the opportunity to be part of a bright future for this football club." Co-Chairman, Steve Parish is delighted to be making this promotion from within the club. "The academy is the life blood of this club. We looked long and hard at how we could move it forward interviewing many outside candidates. Gary not only shone out the at interview but he is already part of the fabric of the academy, shares the ideals of the club and in his eight years work with us has been instrumental in bringing through the wealth of talent we have produced in that time. I know Gary will give 100% to

his new role and clearly I wish him every success" In addition at the training ground, Christine Dowdeswell, has been appointed Club Secretary. Christine has been at the club for 11 years starting in the Conference and Banqueting department and then moved to the training ground to take up the role of Assistant Secretary in 2004. The new role means that the lifelong Palace supporter will be overseeing all the club's football administration and become an integral part of the management team based at the training ground. Chief Executive Phil Alexander has worked alongside the newly appointed Club Secretary since her move to the training ground in 2004. " Christine plays a vital role at our training ground. Her dedication and hard work is recognised across the business and I am sure she will make every part of the Club Secretary's role a huge success. Congratulations to Christine on the promotion."

FROM THE TRUST

Crystal Palace Supporters’ Trust is a member trust of Supporters Direct. Supporters Direct was officially launched in January 2000 and began work in September of that year, having been created after the third report of the Football Taskforce in 1999. Its humble beginnings saw it based in Birkbeck College, London with three years of funding but it soon became clear that its workload would be far higher than previously thought and so it expanded, opening an office in Glasgow in 2002 and moving to Farringdon. 2004 saw it come to just two days from closure before it managed to secure more funding to continue its work, and its success has seen it expand in to rugby league with the backing and funding of RFL. Supporters Direct mission statement is as

follows: ‘Our goal is to promote sustainable spectator sports clubs based on supporters’ involvement and community ownership.” Such a statement covers a wide range of issues, and has certainly risen in profile over the past few years as football clubs in particular have been getting into financial trouble and club supporters’ trusts have been looking for guidance in how they can help their clubs survive. We will look at how Supporters Direct can help trusts and how it has helped CPST in particular in future programmes. You can contact the Trust at cpstrust@ hotmail.com and keep up-to-date with all the latest news on the Trust’s website www. cpstrust.org.uk.

PHYSIO_

ALEX MANOS GIVES HIS LATEST COMMENTS DIRECT FROM THE TREATMENT ROOM FOR THE MATCHDAY PROGRAMME.

There is positive news this week on the injury front with regards to Darren Ambrose's knee injury. Darren played 30 minutes for the reserves against West Ham on Tuesday afternoon and came through well. He is training fully with the first team squad and may be involved in today's game. Like I've said before, its been a long and frustrating time out for Darren but he has kept his spirits up throughout, and although it hurts me to say it, his banter in the treatment room has been decent! He has been very dedicated to his rehabilitation which always helps and has made our job a lot easier. Neil Danns is also progressing well following his knee injury. He has begun outside, functional football work this week. We aim to step this up over the next week and he may be able to return to training in the next week or 10 days. Lee Hills has had a mixed time over the last few weeks with his knee. It's quite common to have flare ups during this type of injury, but thankfully his knee seems to have settled back down again. He is now running again and hopefully we will be able to pick this up over the next few weeks and get him

back into more advanced rehabilitation. The only other injury to report is Anthony Gardner who has picked up a groin injury in training this week. We are monitoring him closely but he may be a doubt for this afternoon's game. Finally, it is with great regret that I have to inform you of Chris Short's departure. Today will be Chris's last game for the Eagles as he moves north to join Leicester City. I'd like to thank Chris for all the support he has given the medical team. He has been instrumental in the rehabilitation of players especially as they are close to returning to full training and he will be greatly missed. He is also a fountain of useless knowledge which makes the coach journeys back slightly more interesting! Good luck Chris, all the best! Of course with every departure comes a new arrival, and I'd like to welcome Scott Guyett to the team as the fitness and conditioning coach. That's it for now, enjoy the game.

INJURY CLINIC- 'DEAD LEGS' You may occasionally see that a player is suffering from a 'dead leg'. This is somewhat of a slang term for a muscular injury which is a result of a direct blow to the muscle, referred to as a contusion. The most common areas are the thigh and calf. There are two main types of this injury. Intermuscular injuries means there is bleeding between the muscles and usually these tend not to be serious and can settle within a few days. Intramuscular injuries means there is bleeding within the muscle. These can be more serious and require long periods of rest to settle as the muscle can become damaged and need rehabilitation.

CITY CRYSTAL PALACE v SWANSEA CITY

Swansea City came agonisingly close to a play off spot last season, missing out by a single point and being pipped to the post on the final day of the season by eventual promotion winners Blackpool. On the final day of the season the Swans needed to win their home game against Doncaster Rovers, while at the same time hoping that the Tangerines dropped points at home to Bristol City. Ian Holloway's men did end up losing points when they were held to a 1-1 draw at Bloomfield Road, but it proved enough as Doncaster held out for a goalless draw at the Liberty Stadium. So this year, the play offs are again the target and already Brendan WWW.CPFC.CO.UK

Rodgers' side are looking strong in their bid for a top six finish. Currently sat in third place, six points off QPR and Cardiff in first and second places respectively, the Swans have risen to the top of the chasing pack largely thanks to their formidable home form. Yet to lose at the Liberty Stadium, they have won five and drawn one from their opening seven home games, and have also conceded just once to their 11 goals scored. On the road things shape up a little differently and they have won just two from their first six games away from home and lost the rest. They are also a lot more porous, with 11 goals shipped against their six scored suggesting they suffer from a softer underbelly when they venture outside of Wales. That weakness was exposed in midweek when they travelled to the DW Stadium to face Wigan Athletic in the fourth round of the Carling Cup. Despite dominating in the opening stages of the game they eventually succumbed to two second half goals without reply, and to add further insult to injury it was a defeat to their former manager Roberto Martinez. The Spaniard, who once said that he would only leave Swansea if forced out received a hostile reception from the travelling Swansea fans, but at the end of 90 minutes he admitted that he was impressed by his former side and expects “them to get into the Premier League very soon.”

BRENDAN RODGERS Record as Manager of Swansea City: P17 W10 D5 L2

After watching his side become only the fourth team to take points off Championship leaders QPR all season in a 0-0 draw at the Liberty Stadium, Brendan Rodgers openly admitted his belief that his side will be among the promotion contenders at the end of the season. "It's just keeping that mental pace and that ambition and if we have a wee bit of luck and steer clear of injuries then I think we can be there or thereabouts,” he said after the Rangers game. Indeed it has been a very good start to his Swansea career and seven wins from his opening 13 games has added considerable weight to his promotion contenders argument. Rodgers, who took over from Paulo Sousa in July, made Swansea his third club in two years having only made the transition from Academy to first team management in 2008. His appointment as manager of Watford in the November of that year marked the start of a controversial debut managerial role. Following Steve Coppell's resignation as manager of Reading, Rodgers initially distanced himself from the role before going on to take it and left the Hornets after just half a season. Again, though, his charge lasted for a matter of months, but this time it was a string of poor results that led to him leaving the club by mutual consent in December 2009. Exactly seven months later he was offered the Swansea role by Chairman Huw Jenkins, who was confident that he had found the right man to take the club forward. "I'm delighted with the appointment,'' Jenkins said. "It's taken us a bit of time, but I'm sure Brendan will prove well worth the wait."

[1] Dorus De Vries Position: Goalkeeper Nationality: Dutch

Swansea City fought off a host of competition to secure the signing of De Vries in the summer of 2007. The highly-rated 28-year-old started his career with Dutch side Stormvogels Telstar before moving to Den Haag in 2003 and then Scottish side Dunfermline three years later. His performances during his 27 game stay with Dunfermline earned him rave reviews, and led to the move to Wales. A near ever-present for the Swans, he played a pivotal role in the club's promotion to the Championship in 2008. [2] Ashley Williams Position: Defender Nationality: Welsh

Williams signed for the Swans permanently at the end of the 2007/08 season following a successful loan spell from Stockport County. The move to the Liberty Stadium ended a five season relationship with County, having signed for them from his first professional club, Hednesford Town, in 2003.

The centre half, who can also play at right back, has so far featured just over 100 times for Swansea and has scored seven times. [5] Alan Tate Position: Defender Nationality: English

Originally a trainee with Manchester United, Tate signed for Swansea in February 2004 after two successful loan spells and nearly 40 appearances with the Swans. It was long enough to warrant a permanent move and he has been a first team regular ever since, playing as a right-back, centre-half and in the midfield. [16] Garry Monk Position: Defender Nationality: English

Club captain, Monk joined the Swans at the start of the 2004/05 season after being released by then Premiership side Southampton, who he had joined from Torquay, the club he began his career with, in 1998. In his eight years with the south coast club he found a first team place difficult to hold down, and so accepted loan spells at Stockport, Oxford, Sheffield Wednesday and

Barnsley before eventually moving to the Liberty Stadium. [22] Angel Rangel Position: Defender Nationality: Spanish

The right back arrived from Spanish side Terrassa in the summer of 2008 when he turned down a number of other Spanish clubs to join up with Roberto Martinez. He made an immediate impact in his first season with the Swans, making 48 appearances and scoring twice as he made the right back spot his own. [8] Darren Pratley Position: Midfielder Nationality: English

A product of the Fulham Academy, Pratley was given his first team debut by the Cottagers in the League Cup in 2003 and then followed it up with a substitute League appearance later the same year. He went on to join Brentford on two occasions before former Swans manager, Kenny Jackett, signed him for ÂŁ100,000 in the summer of 2006. [10] Andrea Orlandi Position: Midfielder Nationality: Midfielder

Orlandi became the third Spanish signing by Roberto Martinez, following Angel Rangel and Gorka Pintado to the Liberty Stadium in 2008. The versatile 26-year old, who can play anywhere on the left or as a second striker, began his career with Alaves in 2003 before being sent on loan to FC Barcelona in 2005. He predominantly featured for Barcelona B, where he made 67 appearances and scored five times and former manager Frank Rijkaard was impressed enough to call him up CRYSTAL PALACE v SWANSEA CITY

to the first team. Despite impressing in his one and only game for the first team, he moved on soon after with a free transfer to Swansea. [7] David Cotterill Position: Midfielder Nationality: Welsh

Cotterill shot to prominence during the 2004/05 season when he broke onto the professional scene with Bristol City. After making 12 appearances in his first season, he went on to make 45 in his second and scored seven times. It led to a £2m move to Wigan in 2006, but he struggled to live up to his price tag and moved onto Sheffield United two years later, But again a lack of first team chances meant he sought another move, and in November 2009 he joined Swansea City. [12] Nathan Dyer Position: Midfielder Nationality: English

A Southampton Academy graduate, Dyer broke into the Saints' first team during the 2005/06 season and finished it with 17 league appearances to his name.

After four seasons as a Southampton player, in which he also enjoyed loan spells with Burnley and Sheffield United, he joined Swansea on a temporary basis in 2009 before making it permanent ahead of the 2009/10 season. [24] Joe Allen Position: Midfielder Nationality: Welsh

One of Swansea's home grown players, the Swans moved quickly to secure the future of the young midfielder by signing him on a three year contract in 2007. Having been with the club from the age of nine, he made his debut in the final game of the 2006/07 season as a substitute against Blackpool. In October 2008 he was moved out on loan to Wrexham, but was forced to return after his second game thanks to an ankle injury. Now in his fifth season with the Swans, he has enjoyed a promising start to the season with ten appearances already to his name. [26] Kemy Agustien Position: Midfielder Nationality: Dutch

The Swans signed Agustien in October after the Dutch midfielder had impressed on the club's preseason tour of Holland. His trial was cut short though when he sustained a knee ligament injury, but so impressed was manager Brendan Rodgers that he signed him as a free agent anyway after Agustien cancelled his contract with Eredivise side AZ. The 24-year old begun his career at Willem II in 2004 before joining AZ two years later. However, opportunities proved a rarity and so he accepted loan moves to Birmingham and then RKC Waalwijk.

[14] Stephen Dobbie Position: Striker Nationality: Scottish

Swansea signed the highly-rated striker on a free transfer from Queen of the South in the summer of 2009. Having started his career at Rangers, he found it difficult to break into the first team and so moved to Australian club Northern Spirit on loan, then Hibernian for £300,000; St. Johnstone and Dumbarton on loan, before settling down at Queen of the South. After two years with Queen of the South, he moved to Swansea last season, but after a handful of appearances he moved to Blackpool for the final four months of their promotion campaign and chipped in with five goals from 19 games. [30] Marvin Emnes Position: Striker Nationality: Dutch

Currently on a month-long loan from Middlesbrough, Emnes signalled his arrival with a goal on his debut last weekend as Swansea saw off Leicester City at the Liberty Stadium. The Holland U21 striker was brought to England by Boro in 2008 from Sparta Rotterdam, the club he began his professional career with, for a reported fee of £3.2m. CRYSTAL PALACE v SWANSEA CITY

ONE TO WATCH: SCOTT SINCLAIR

POSITION: Winger NATIONALITY: English GAMES: 12 GOALS: 10

Having spent the best part of his professional career out on loan from his parent club, Chelsea, Scott Sinclair finally accepted a permanent move away from Stamford Bridge when he joined Swansea in August. Over the past four years he has joined six separate clubs on loan, his first being Plymouth Argyle in 2007. He spent just four months with the Pilgrims, but still managed to establish himself as one of the most exciting forward English talents thanks, in part, to a stunning individual effort in the FA Cup against Barnet. The following season he joined QPR for a month between November and December 2007, and then moved to Charlton for a month between February and March 2008. Neil Warnock snapped him up for the final two months of the 07/08 season for Crystal Palace, and he played an important role in sealing the club's place in the Play Off semi finals. He returned to Chelsea for the first part of the 08/09 season and managed two substitute appearances before moving out again, this time to Birmingham City for the second half of the campaign. In four months at St Andrews he managed 14 appearances without scoring, and the following summer he accepted a season-long loan deal with Wigan Athletic. Ahead of this season though he broke the routine by signing for Swansea after the two clubs agreed a ÂŁ500,000 fee. CRYSTAL PALACE v SWANSEA CITY

Swansea were knocked out of the Carling Cup in their fourth round clash with Wigan Athletic on Tuesday night. The pairing of the two teams marked the first time that Roberto Martinez sent a side out against his former club since leaving the Swans for the Latics in 2009. And it was the Spaniard who left the DW Stadium the happier of the two managers after watching his club record signing, Mauro Boselli and former Palace skipper, Ben Watson, score in the second half to earn the victory. It was the visitors though who enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, but barring a Craig Beattie goal ruled out for offside, they failed to find the target. Darren Pratley had sent Cedric van der Gun clean through on goal with his pace taking him away from

his marker, but instead of slotting beyond Ali Al Habsi he chose to pick out Beattie to his left, the Scottish striker left with an easy tap in, only for the assistant referee to raise his flag. The Swans were left to rue that decision because seven minutes into the second half Wigan found a legitimate way through when Antolin Alcaraz played through the defence to Boselli who rounded Yves Ma-Kalambay before slotting home. The goal gave the home side a huge lift and created further opportunities through Maynor Figuero and Boselli, while David Cotterill came close to pulling one back for Swansea. In the end though, Wigan added their second when Andrea Orlandi brought down Victor Moses in the box and Watson found the bottom corner with the spot kick. CRYSTAL PALACE v SWANSEA CITY

FROM THE PRESS BOX_

FROM THE PRESS BOX

EACH WEEK WE SPEAK TO A MEMBER OF THE OPPOSITION’S LOCAL PRESS.

Gareth Vincent

Swansea City Correspondent South Wales Evening Post TODAY’S PREDICTION: 0-1

What was the general feeling towards the appointment of Brendan Rodgers as the new manager? Obviously he did really

well with Watford and then things didn't go well for him at Reading, for whatever reason, but I think everyone knew when he got the job he liked to play good football. That is what Swansea have built a reputation for in the last three or four years ever since Roberto Martinez became the manager, so there were high hopes he could keep that going. Last season, the way it turned out, Swansea, although they passed it around, didn't score many goals because Paulo Sousa based the success he had on clean sheets rather than what they did going forward. But Rodgers has tried to make them more attacking and more of a threat going forward and he has succeeded without a doubt. Do you think that rigid belief in the attacking philosophy can put undue pressure on Swansea managers? And do you think that could limit the club's options when they need to appoint further down the line?

A lot of clubs have ways they like to do things, and if you ask a Swansea fan they would be more than happy for the people in charge at the club to keep going down this road. It has been an enjoyable ride ever since Martinez got the job. He got them out of League One playing some really good football and then carried on in

the Championship. They finished eighth under him and then seventh under Sousa last year, and now the hope is that Rodgers can take them a step forward this year. I don't think it is holding them back. What do you think the realistic expectations are for Swansea this year? Realistic expectations

are certainly to match what we have done in the last two years in this division. The Chairman said in the summer that the challenge was just to stay up again and continue to establish themselves at this level because it had been a long time since Swansea were playing in this division. The fact that they are third in the table as it starts to take shape and people start to take note of league positions for the first time, I would say Rodgers would be disappointed not to be in the Play Offs - although he might not admit that just now. Looking at Swansea's form guide so far this year, their success has come largely from their formidable home form. On their travels though they have won two and lost four of their six away from the Liberty Stadium. Is their away form becoming a concern? Well it

definitely was after they lost their first four away in the league. The haven't lost at home yet so that has been the foundation of their success so far, but they have won their last two away games –

BELOW: Scott Sinclair who came on-loan to Palace at the end of the 2007/08 season. He is Gareth's Swansea player to watch this afternoon.

Watford and Reading - so they are hopeful they have turned a corner. In fairness, out of the games they lost away this season, the only one they played poorly was at Nottingham Forest. They are hoping that things are on the up, but we will have to see how we get on against Palace at Selhurst Park, of course. What do you think is different from the Swansea that turn out at home and the Swansea on their travels? I think the teams

they are up against are more ambitious when they are on their own turf. The same is with any club in the four divisions. A lot of clubs come to the Liberty these days and set out first and foremost not to concede and then see what happens after that. But when teams are under pressure to attack and take the game to Swansea that is when they struggle. The teams that have done well against Swansea have been the teams that play high up the pitch and close them down quickly and not give them time to play, thatis where Swansea have struggled. Who is the player to watch this afternoon? It will have to be

Scott Sinclair because he has had a huge impact with ten goals in 12 appearances since he joined. If he was a centre forward you would be delighted with that return, but as a wide player it is phenomenal. So Swansea will be hoping he can deliver against one of his former clubs of course. CRYSTAL PALACE v SWANSEA CITY

There was a local ‘derby’ on Saturday 27th October as the Eagles entertained near neighbours Wimbledon and the spectators were treated to a seven goal feast. The Dons opened the scoring in the ninth minute but four minutes later Geoff Thomas replied with a headed goal from a corner and that was the half-time score. John Humphrey scored his first Palace goal three minutes after the break and then there was a flurry of four goals in the final thirteen minutes starting with Andy Gray crashing the ball home on seventy-seven minutes to make it 3-1. In the eighty-first minute John Fashanu chipped the ball over Nigel Martyn but within sixty seconds Mark Bright had put Palace 4-2 up only for Paul McGee to ensure a nail biting final few minutes in this entertaining affair. Leyton Orient were the visitors three days later for a Rumbelous League cup tie but the Palace forwards failed to find a way past the well organised third division side that had goalkeeper Paul Heald, later to be on Palace’s books, in superb form.Had it not been for the woodwork in the closing stages the Eagles could have been totally embarrassed in this goalless draw. Glyn Hodges was injured in that cup game and Phil Barber replaced him on the left side of midfield for the trip to Old Trafford on 3rd November, but a sluggish start by the Eagles allowed United to fire themselves into a two goal lead inside the first twenty minutes through Neil Webb and Danny Wallace. Few chances came Palace’s way while Nigel Martyn had to be alert to further United efforts as they tried to add to their tally but despite this reverse Palace were still fourth in the table.

JOHN HUMPHREY

John joined Palace in the summer of 1990 from tenants Charlton Athletic so he did not even have to change dressing rooms! A stylish and attacking right back John played in all fifty-two first team games in the 1990-91 season and with Eric Young arriving at the same time at centre-half, the pair helped make the defence almost watertight as the club completed its most successful campaign to date. Apart from the goal John netted in October 1990, his other was a stunning thirty-yard drive against one of his former clubs, Wolves, here at Selhurst Park in October 1993. After leaving the Eagles John had spells with Charlton, Gillingham and Brighton and is now I believe connected with Whitgift School in South Croydon.

For the away game against Reading at Elm Park on Saturday 23rd October Palace were missing Robert McCracken who was away on international duty with Ireland who were playing England at Sunderland the same afternoon. Tom Jones took his place in the Palace line-up, and although Palace had the better of exchanges in the first half, Reading scored the only goal of the game just before the break. But despite Palace pressure in the second half, the Biscuitmen did not crumble! On the afternoon of Thursday 28th October the Palace first team travelled across to East London and faced Clapton Orient in the London Professional Charity Fund match only to lose the game 1-2 in front of a crowd of around seven thousand. Two days later Palace met Reading, again this time at Selhurst Park, in the return league fixture that attracted the biggest attendance so far that season. They were not disappointed as Ted Smith opened the scoring for the Palace in the first minute, and although Reading threatened to equalise, the game was settled on the hour mark when, in a goalmouth scramble, Bert Menlove was credited with getting the ball over the line. The victory took Palace back up to second place in Division Three.

Another promotion clash took place at Selhurst Park on Saturday 22nd October with Palace, in pole position, hosting Bradford Park Avenue who were in fifth place. Palace welcomed back Johnny Byrne on leave from the Army and the team was soon a goal up when Ron Heckman netted in the second minute. Six minutes later Johnny Gavin doubled the advantage, but in the eighteenth minute Bradford got one back only for George Petchey to later restore the two goal lead. Then, in the final minute, Byrne dribbled past most of Bradford’s defence and their goalkeeper to send the crowd home happy. The following Saturday Palace travelled to Northampton Town, another rival to get out of Division Four, and it appears that Byrne had Palace in the lead after only ten seconds. But the Cobblers equalised when a shot was deflected off Johnny McNichol and completely deceived Vic Rouse in the Palace goal. In the second half it was virtually one way traffic from the Palace forwards but all there was to show for the pressure was a poacher’s goal from centre-forward Dennis Uphill to claim both points in the 2-1 victory.

JOHNNY GAVIN Johnny was a barrel-chested right winger who came to Palace from Watford towards the end of his career in the summer of 1959. Having already earned seven full caps for the Republic of Ireland, Johnny’s style of play was well suited to Arthur Rowe’s ‘push and run’ methods. He was an ever present in the thirty-nine League games until Easter, weighing in with eight goals while setting up opportunities for others. In the summer of 1961 he left Palace for nonleague club Cambridge City.

MY FIRST_

FIRST TEAM YOU SUPPORTED AS A BOY

The first team that I really started supporting a kid was Arsenal because I liked the way they played and some of the players they had playing for them at the time. FIRST PAIR OF FOOTBALL BOOTS When I started playing

regularly my dad took me to the shops and told me to go and pick out a pair of boots. For some stupid reason I picked out a bright yellow pair of Puma Kings. I scored quite a lot of goals in those boots and I have still got them at home. FIRST FOOTBALL MATCH YOU WENT TO The first match I went to

would have been Aston Villa against Inter Milan. It was a good game. FIRST PURCHASE YOU MADE WITH YOUR FIRST PAY PACKET

I went out and bought some clothes and a watch from what I can remember. FIRST PROFESSIONAL GOAL

It was for Everton against Crystal Palace at Goodison Park. We were 3-0 up and I came on off the bench at 16 and made it four. I became the youngest Premier League goalscorer and I am very proud to still hold that record. FIRST TEAM YOU PLAYED FOR AS A KID

I can't remember the name of the team that I played for. I remember I used to go training on Saturdays with an older team but could not play for them as I was too young. I trained with them for a number of months before signing up to play for a Sunday team. FIRST IDOL

Ian Wright without a doubt. From an early age I used to watch him all the time and admired the way he played. FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL

I went to Kings Thorn school in Birmingham and I can't remember my first day, all I know is that my nan or my aunt used to take me and pick me up quite a bit. FIRST CAR

It was a BMW X3 although I was too young to drive it when I bought it so my mum and dad had it for a year before I took it off them. I don't think they were too happy but then I started driving it for a while.

The Eagles arrived at Carrow Road on Tuesday night still looking for their first away win of the season as well as their first away goal of the 2010/11 campaign. And with Norwich flying high in third place, the odds had been stacked against the Eagles to get the positive result they were looking for. Those odds were most probably even greater when the home side created some excellent chances in the early stages before eventually taking the lead on 43 minutes. The Canaries' summer signing Simeon Jackson smashed Julian Speroni's bar with a super effort on eight minutes, latching on to Wes Hoolahan's through ball to fire the ball over the Argentine and against the woodwork. Edgar Davids then came to the rescue for Palace when he was in the

right place to clear Simon Lappin's low effort off the line. In response Palace came close when Wilfried Zaha flashed a shot just wide of the far post after being released by Andy Dorman. And the young striker was denied again moments later when he had his shot blocked by Korey Smith. But the advantage went to the home side two minutes from the break when Grant Holt stole in between Anthony Gardner and Julian Bennett to convert Lappin's pinpoint cross. The second half though belonged to Palace when Bennett and then Gardner turned the game on its head in favour of the Eagles. The scores were levelled on 56 minutes when Owen Garvan exchanged a short corner with Zaha

and then floated in a deep cross to the back cross for Bennett to head past John Ruddy. The turnaround was eventually completed seven minutes later though, and again it was from a set piece that the Eagles broke through. Garvan, again the provider, aimed a corner to the near post for Gardner to nod past Ruddy and give Palace their first away win lead of the season. The home side pushed hard for an equaliser as Holt, Jackson and Anthony McNamee all came close but the Eagles held on for their first away three points of the season.

Palace travelled to Deepdale last weekend buoyed by their first away win of the season against Norwich City four days earlier when goals from Julian Bennett and Anthony Gardner overturned a 1-0 defecit, and they came close to overturning a greater margin against Preston after finding themselves 3-1 down with just over half an hour gone. Jon Parkin bagged his 100th and 101st career goals in the 13th and 25th minute either side of Owen Garvan's stunning 20th minute equaliser to give the home side a 2-1 lead. The Lilywhites' striker took advantage of some lacklustre Palace defending to fire low past Speroni, and then followed it up with an effort from the edge of the box after controlling a long ball over the top

from Paul Coutts. Garvan's equaliser though was something really rather special The Palace midfielder has shown his propensity for shooting from distance and has come agonisingly close on occasion this season, but this time he found his range when he received a knock down from James Vaughan, let it bounce once before unleashing a brilliant half volley past Andy Lonergan. On 36 minutes Preston extended their advantage to two goals thanks to a wonder strike of their own by Keith Treacy. The winger reacted quickest to receive Iain Hume's quick free kick, and used the space in front of him to take his time and smash a rising 30 yard drive past Speroni. The second half continued

where the first had left off in terms of goals, with Preston's fourth of the afternoon arriving on 66 minutes in controversial circumstances. Paul Coutts went down theatrically under a soft challenge from Julian Bennett, and North End captain Callum Davidson scored from the spot. Andy Dorman then reduced the defecit when he connected with Paddy McCarthy's cross with a classy header on 69 minutes, and Vaughan reduced it further when he converted from the spot following Darel Russell's challenge on Pablo Counago with ten minutes to go. But after Wilfried Zaha came close with a flashing drive with five minutes to go, Preston held on for their second home win of the season. CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: Owen Garvan picks up possession 30 yards from goal and drills a shot into the top corner to equalise for the Eagles. Anthony Gardner marks Jon Parkin who scored twice, the first being his 100th goal for the club. The Eagles' Alex Marrow in possession of the ball. James Vaughan converts Palace's penalty in the 80th minute.

PALACE PLAYER_

PALACE PLAYER is now available at:

WWW.CPFC.CO.UK Since the club's last home game Palace Player continued to bring you new and exclusive content. Academy starlet Wilfried Zaha has caught the attention of commentators and fellow managers already this season and he spoke to Palace Player about making the transition from the Academy to the first team. When asked what his aims were for the season the 17 year old revealed : "At the start of the season my aim was to make it onto the bench, to have played as many games as I have, scoring on my dĂŠbut and putting in some good performances has been a dream come true. So in terms of my aims I have already surpassed what I had

originally set out to do. All I can do now is continue to improve, listen to the coaches and try and help the club move up the league as I don't like seeing us in the relegation zone." Andy Dorman grabbed his first goal in Palace colours in the 4-3 defeat to Preston last weekend at Deepdale and the midfielder told Palace Player on Wednesday. "Every player is aware of the position in the league. I wouldn't say it is a worry, it is a concern but we have been playing well but the results have not been forth-coming with exceptions to a few games. "Hopefully the results will come and we can pull ourselves up the table as the league is still very close."

With exclusive interviews, commentary for both home and away games, post-match press conference footage from every match, extended highlights and much much more, the one question you have to ask yourself is if you support Palace, then why have you not got Palace Player? Remember 'Think Palace, Think Player' the only place to get the latest news on your club.

Club historian Ian King gives us his memories from those early days as a Palace fan in his twenties when Malcolm Allison arrived in SE25.

MALCOLM'S ARRIVAL Malcolm Allison was appointed Palace boss in March 1973 and his first home game was against Chelsea, which was also the same game that saw Jim Cannon given his debut for the club. It was the first time in the club’s history that money began to have a noticeable impact at the club, and with players like Don Rogers, Charlie Cook and Alan Whittle also arriving at Selhurst Park there was suddenly a real buzz around the place. We went on to win it 2-0 and Jim scored one of the goals to give us our first win over a London rival in the First Division. But at that stage of the season we were hovering around the relegation zone, and although we had a game in hand on the teams around us we only managed one further win all season and that was the final fixture of the campaign, and that proved immaterial. Our survival had actually depended on the penultimate game of the season against Norwich City, in which both sides required a win to secure their survival. WWW.TWITTER.COM/OFFICIAL_CPFC

Unfortunately for the Eagles, despite taking the lead, the Canaries fought back to take a 2-1 win and it was them who stayed up. Of course there was disappointment that we went down, but most of us felt that we would return at the first attempt so the focus was never really on the relegation that had been suffered. But things do not always work out as you think. That summer there were some big changes at the club. Firstly, we changed from claret and

Malcolm Allison was influential in the 70s re-branding of Crystal Palace. The club dropped the nickname 'The Glaziers' infavour of 'The Eagles'. The club also changed the badge along with the claret and blue colours.

light blue to our current red and blue, and then Malcolm decided to change from our Glaziers identity to a stronger image, and the Eagle was chosen. That is when we became known as the Eagles as opposed to our former name. Malcolm also had the idea of giving every member of his team nicknames, which were stitched onto their tracksuits and even included on the back page of the first programme. Malcolm was also given one and was known as The Judge.

1973/74

SEASON1973/74 So ahead of the new season expectations were high that we could return at the first attempt, and when we went into our first game against Notts County it was generally considered that we would run away with it. But although we played some good football that afternoon, County beat us 4-1. That proved to be the start of an horrendous opening to the season for us in which we didn't win a league match until November – away at Bristol City – and by then we had also been knocked out of the League Cup by lowly Stockport County. In all it was 15 League games without a victory, including a run of our first four away games in which we didn't score a goal. But you could see that Malcolm was ringing the changes with the old guard during those opening stages of the campaign. John Jackson didn't start the first couple of games; he put Paul Hammond in goal instead. And by the time October came around, Bill Roffey, Jackson, Ian Phillip and Alan Pinkney had all played their last games for the club. To supplement those departures, Malcolm CRYSTAL PALACE v SWANSEA CITY

brought in his own players such as Derek Jeffries and Roy Barry, and then Peter Taylor was brought in from Southend. At the end of the year, Jeff Johnson, Stewart Jump and Mick Hill arrived, and as those players bedded in the results started to come in the second half of the season. However, the away win at Bristol City was the result that first gave the team the much needed lift, and from November through to Easter our form picked up. By the time Easter came around we were perfectly placed to escape relegation, but despite winning at Fulham on Good Friday we lost to Millwall on the Saturday, at home to Fulham on the Tuesday and then at home to Hull on the Saturday. Those three straight defeats stuck us right back in it again, and a win against Swindon Town in the penultimate game of the season meant it all went down to the final game away at Cardiff. We needed a win to stay up, anything less and we would go down. The game finished 1-1 and Palace became the first team to be relegated after finishing third from bottom. WWW.CPFC.CO.UK

MALCOLM ALLISON_

Jim Cannon made his Palace debut on the same day Allison started his managerial career at Selhurst.

SEASON1974/75 There were no new signings made in the summer before the 74/75 season, but right at the start of the season we had Wyn Davies in from Blackpool on loan for three games, and then in September probably the best deal Malcolm made for the club went through when Don Rogers left for QPR and Terry Venables and Ian Evans arrived in exchange. Ian went on to be a commanding centre half and captain of the club, while Terry ended his playing career after 14 games with us and went on to be coach and manager. Once again it was a season punctuated by good and bad spells. We were always there or there abouts for promotion, and even led the table on a couple of occasions. But once again Easter came around and we fell apart. We didn't win in five games during that period and although we picked up a bit in the last couple of games, the leaders – Blackburn, Plymouth and Charlton – had already won promotion. We ended up finishing fifth and there were no play offs in those days so it meant that we would be staying in Division Three. However, there was one highlight in those final games because, with nothing to play for in our final game of the season – away at Tranmere – Malcolm gave debuts to David Kemp, who he brought in from Slough Town, and a young left back by the name of Kenny Sansom. _MALCOLM ALLISON

The interesting thing about Malcolm was that there was such an aura around him and around the club that despite suffering two relegations in his first two seasons with us, there was still a feel good factor around SE25. Compared to other Third Division sides we were easily top in terms of crowds, and we consistently pulled in attendances around the 15 -16,000 mark at least. And for the 75/76 season, such was the base that he built up over the years, he went through the whole campaign without bringing in a new player - from the start to the end he used all the players he had at his disposal from the beginning of the season. And we burst out of the traps in the opening weeks of the season with five wins from our opening five games. We drew away at Walsall in our sixth game, but then went on to record six victories in the next seven games. In fact, in our opening 20 games we lost just once with a 1-0 defeat at home to Brighton to take us to the top of the league by November. We were having similar success in the FA Cup and recorded wins against Walton & Hersham and then against Millwall, which took a replay, in the opening two rounds of the competition. However, the success in the cup appeared to be having a detrimental effect on our League form, because after that Millwall win we immediately lost to them in the League and then lost the next three games as well. We then moved on to a fourth round tie away at Scunthorpe and progressed with a 1-0 win, but there was more to remember from it than just the result because it was also the first game that Malcolm Allison wore his famous Fedora hat. With Scunthorpe’s former ground being on

SEASON

the top of a hill and quite an open design, it meant that the sunshine spread right across the ground and shone over the dugouts. So Malcolm wore his Fedora hat to keep the sun out of his eyes, and then by the time we came to play Leeds United in the next round Fedoras were flying off the shelves in south London. At this stage of the season Malcolm was really getting into his stride, and ahead of the Leeds game such was his confidence that he revealed he had a plan to beat them, which of course he did and it worked a treat. I wouldn’t say that we outplayed them, but we certainly outmaneuvered them and David Swindlehurst’s solitary strike proved enough to get the win. Chelsea were our opponents in the next round, and in front of 54,000 supporters Peter Taylor scored twice in a famous 3-2 win at Stamford Bridge. But once again though our League form was proving patchy inbetween the cup games, and our lead at the top of the table slowly started to erode. Ahead of the Chelsea game we had drawn against Hereford, Shrewsbury and Swindon, and

lost to Rotherham. And then after the game we lost to Peterborough and Brighton and drew with Wrexham before eventually winning away at Southend. It was a recurring theme throughout the season – good form in the cup, poor form in the League. The cup adventure continued with an away trip to Sunderland. The fixture was played at their old ground, Roker Park, and a large contingent of fans travelled north on the specially arranged train that was made available to hire by the railway. It actually broke down en route, which meant those fans didn’t get to the ground until halfway through the game. Their afternoon was made up though when, having won the game 1-0 thanks to Alan Whittle’s Goal of the Season contender, Malcolm brought the team back on the train with the supporters. The next round was the semi final, and on April 3rd we travelled to Stamford Bridge where our FA Cup journey came to an end. The outcome was an overall disappointment as the year seemed to be one that had Palace's name on one of the dressing room doors at Wembley, if not the trophy. It was not to be and Southampton won the game 2-0 and went on to the final where they beat Manchester United. The defeat really knocked that Palace team, and from then on we just fell away in the League. Four days later we lost to Sheffield Wednesday, at home to Cardiff and could only draw at home to Halifax. Although we won at Gillingham after that, we didn't win again for the rest of the season and in five of our last eight games we completely failed to score. The cup exit did not just affect the players, we all thought were going to Wembley as well, so it had a really deflating effect on us all. A personal recollection of mine was coming out of the Bridge with my wife and two friends, who had only recently become Palace fans. They turned to me and said 'there will be another time', and I said that there wouldn't be because it felt like our only chance. Of course I was proved wrong 15 years later, but because we had got to the semi finals, beaten the likes of Chelsea and Leeds it felt like our year, and the defeat was difficult to take. So it was a shame it came to an end like it did.

_MALCOLM ALLISON

THE RESIGNATION & THE RETURN Malcolm Allison resigned as Crystal Palace manager on May 19th, two weeks after the end of the 1975/76 season came to an end. For Palace supporters, Allison managed the club at a time when it began to grow as one of the bigger clubs in London. The money that Ray brought to the club and the arrival of artistic, skilful players meant that we were suddenly watching football on the pitch the like of which we had never seen before. As a younger supporter I had only managed to see Johnny Byrne in his later days when he was well past his best, but for those who had seen him in his prime this new crop of players were the best they had seen in the ten years since his departure. And there was a real buzz around the club while Malcolm was here. The success he had had with Manchester City, his personality and the players that were coming to the club had everyone enthused. Palace were going to be on the map, and that CRYSTAL PALACE v SWANSEA CITY

was always going to be the case when Malcolm came here. There was always something going on at the club or at the training ground; we were never far from a newspaper story or a tv feature- Palace were in the spotlight. Unfortunately, I never got to meet him but there was always something going at the club when he was here, and as usual with Palace you simply took the highs with the lows and got on with it.

ABOVE: Terry Venables took over from Allison as boss.

SEASON 1981 Of course that was not the last we saw of Malcolm because he returned for a short spell as manager in 1981. Ray Bloye was still Chairman of the club at the time, and when Terry Venables decided to leave in the October, and with all the accusations flying round as to why he left, it was decided to bring Malcolm back to the club with Ernie Walley as his assistant. From: The Fans Subject: Tributes To: Matchday Programme One of the best times of my life being a Homesdale boy when the Eagles were really flying and BIG MAL was king! Just amazing times,Thanks for everything Mal. R.I.P. Chris Barling ..... At 14 I was one of the thousands of kids who brought a fedora at the club shop during that great cup run in 76 (which only fell apart 2 years ago) I was also one of the thouseands who queued around that streets of Selhurst Park to get a Semi-final ticket. He brought many great things to Crystal Palace, Our current nick name, our red & blue kit and not to mention one of our better managers Terry Venables, to name but a few. I will always remember and respect the man and what he did for us in his short tenure at Selhurst and I am sure that his name will live on as a well deserved palace legend. Ed Baker ..... We never saw the greatest of successes on the pitch under Mal, but there was never a dull moment and he effectively created the modern Palace you see today, the nickname and our colours.

SEASON1981 THE RETURN

The cup run of 76 whilst in the 3rd division was the like never seen before or since, embarrassing Leeds, Chelsea and Sunderland in their own grounds. Not for him the usual lower league side approach of containment and chance of a replay or breakaway goal. He took us there believing we would win, and win we did, in style, outplaying them all He laid the foundations for the team of the 80’s recruiting the youth players that were to become legendary and who went on to success under Terry Venables Champagne, Cigars and trusty fedora

At that time Palace were well rooted to the bottom of the first division and Malcolm arrived at the beginning of December. The team was already in a pretty fragile state and I don't think Malcolm really had his heart in the job. I remember we had an FA Cup third round draw, of all places, at Manchester City and they ended up playing us off the park and won 4-0. The television cameras were all over the place, and they even went into the Palace dressing room afterwards. It was not good viewing if you followed the Eagles. And then when Ron Noades took over in January, three days later it was announced that he and Malcolm had held a meeting and it was decided he would depart; so Malcolm left and another chapter of his managerial career came to a close.

Big Mal, great coach, great fun and a truly great man RIP Gary Stanford ..... A great coach who changed our club from top to bottom.created the best youth team we have ever had.i hope the club can in some way make sure he is never forgotten.RIP Big Mal!...Ian Roberts. Eastbourne. ..... When Malcolm Allison was manager of Palace, everybody in football knew us and everybody in football wanted to beat us. Exciting days and also the beginning of Terry Venables's managerial career. Malcolm put Selhurst Park on the Map and created the 'Eagles'. Never to be forgotten. John Gregory ..... What a larger than life personality. He was the man who changed us from the Glaziers to the Eagles and introduced the white shirt with the red and blue sash loved by so many fans. I still have my blue fedora from that great cup run ( a little battered and the red band has gone) as a momento of those great times with Big Mal. Regards Keith Blackwell Formerly Pete the Eagle!

Since the last home game the u18’s Academy team have played just one game, and that came against Portsmouth two weeks ago today. Against Portsmouth we had a chance to go top of the league, if we had won. As it happened we suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Pompey at the Beckenham training ground. We conceded the first goal within the opening 15 minutes when a mistake at the back allowed them to get a one-onone and take an early lead. In the second half we had two one-on-ones, Ibra Sekajja and Ryan Innis both having good chances to grab an equaliser. A defensive error again at the back between the right back and centre half allowed them to get a one-on-one with Charlie Mann. Mann had no option but to bring him down, which meant that five minutes into the second half we were two goals down to a Portsmouth side that had only picked up one point from their opening nine games. We had done enough work with the players in the week about Portsmouth so I don’t think they were complacent coming into the game. We just gave them a goal at the start of both CRYSTAL PALACE v SWANSEA CITY

halves and goals change football matches at any level. After those two goals we could not get back into the game and they grabbed a third on the hour mark and saw out the game to take all three points. We did not have a game to prepare for the following week, so we used it as an opportunity to work on some things in training as well as having a team building day on the Friday in a classroom. It was important to give them a mental break ahead of the busy period of fixtures over the next six weeks. Today we travel over to Chelsea to play their Academy side and they have got some good players and fine footballers. It is a game that the players always look forward to and I am sure they will be thriving on that experience of playing a club from the top flight.

PALACE LADIES 12 VICTOIRE LADIES 0 Crystal Palace Ladies entered this local derby with visitors from Croydon looking to put their League form to one side for a while, and started this Surrey FA County Cup game on the front foot. Looking to take the game to the visitors the young Ladies were soon exerting their influence, the difference between the two sides apparent as Palace went 4 –0 up after 29 mins. Finally

after such a torrid start to the season the confidence was growing, as the Eagles played the ball about with some crisp passing. By the Half time break the home side were 5 – 0 ahead, and the visitors looking unable to reply. The second half started, in the same vane with the Eagles stretching their lead to 9 – 0 by the 85th minute. This could have been more had the Victoire bar not been rattled twice by a curling left foot effort from Ingram and a thunderous shot from Walters. But in the final three minutes the Ladies added another three goals to romp home in this game comfortable winners. The total goal tally was Lecomber (4), Walters (3), Mitchell, Ingram, De-Souza, Gaela and Cole one each.

FOOTBALL LEAGUE PAPER_

IN THE SAME WEEK THAT ROONEY’S PROTRACTED CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS WERE PLAYED OUT IN FRONT OF THE WORLD’S MEDIA, THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE UNVEILED A MEMORIAL TO THE PLAYERS AND FANS WHO FOUGHT SIDE BY SIDE IN THE FOOTBALLERS’ BATTALION DURING THE GREAT WAR.

Football has a way of throwing up great contrasts and here was another. While one of the stars of the current game was being rewarded with a staggering £200,000 plus a week contract, the heroes of yesterday were being remembered for something far more important with a simple slab of marble and some eloquent words. The facts are that from the 17th and 23rd Middlesex Footballers’ Battalions more than 1,000 players and fans died while about 2,000 suffered casualties. Most

of the injuries came in the battle of Delville Wood – or Devil’s Wood as the troops re-named it - on the edge of the tiny village of Longueval in northern France, where the memorial was unveiled. The Football League organised a party of dignitaries and players to attend the ceremony. They included Phil Stant who organised the memorial, Wycombe player Gareth Ainsworth, and Millwall chief executive Andy Ambler. All of them agreed with Football League chairman

Greg Clarke who said that current players, and especially academy members, should pay a visit to the memorial to gain understanding. As Clarke said: “The problem of football is it can be all-consuming but it’s not all of life. I’d support bringing young footballers out here, to give them a sense of perspective to what true sacrifice is all about. “Walking around those graves, seeing people aged 17, 18, 19, who ran into a wood with people running at them screaming, holding bayonets

at them, and shells raining down on their heads is truly humbling.” Wycombe winger Ainsworth added: “The First World War was a massive part of our history and it is so important that it is not forgotten. “I would encourage all players, especially the younger ones to visit the memorial and learn about what players their age went through for us.” Abler said he will ensure that the Millwall academy make a visit to the memorial and would encourage all players, academies and fans to do the same. The role of the Footballers’ Battalions has been praised in historical writings of the Great War. But following the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914 the footballers were heavily criticised by notable personalities of the day like WG Grace and Field Marshall Lord Roberts who labelled them as ‘shirkers’ for continuing to play the game while the majority of other sports had stopped. It was as a result of the criticism that in November 1914 Brentford MP William Joyson Hicks raised the Footballers’ Battalion following a meeting in Fulham Town Hall. At first 35 professional footballers signed up, but within a few months there were more than 300 from clubs including Millwall, Reading, Clapton (now Leyton) Orient and Brighton and Hove Albion. By 1918 only 30 of them were still alive. Many of the stories are documented in the book ‘When the Whistle Blows’ by Andrew Riddoch and John Kemp, which charts the stories of the 17th and 23rd Middlesex Footballers Battalions. CELEBRITY EAGLES_

EACH HOME GAME WE TAKE YOU TO THE WORLD OF TV, STAGE, RADIO OR BIG SCREEN TO MEET A PALACE FAN YOU WILL KNOW WELL!

CELEBRITY Bob ‘The Cat’ Bevan MBE Comedian & After Dinner Speaker How did you come to support Crystal Palace? I was born in Dulwich Hamlet as a kid, and went to all of their games, home and away and in fact I am still a vice-president there. I live an equal distance between Millwall, Charlton and Palace. I just liked the name I think and started supporting them in the late 50’s.

EAGLES into the days of Wright and Bright and the unsung heroes of that team - Eric Young and Andy Thorn who were magnificent at the back.

First Game? The first game I saw was in 1958 when we were at home to Aldershot in the Division 3 south and we drew 1-1. I have still got the programme from that day. In fact I have got all of the programmes from every single match I have been to in a filing cabinet in my office. I’m a bit of an anorak. What is your most memorable match? I think it would have to be the Semi-Final against Aston Villa, which was just so unbelievable really. Considering I started watching the club when they were in the lower leagues I never ever thought we would get to a Cup Final so that was special really. Even though we did not win the FA Cup it was a massive achievement just to get there. Favourite Player? I find it hard to dig out one really. I probably have to start by saying Johnny Byrne, I also loved watching Don Rogers, John Jackson, who kept us up, and probably jump

Your favourite Palace goal that you can remember? It was Johnny Byrne in a fourth division game against Southport. He dribbled in from the corner flag, beating three or four people on the way before scoring from an acute angle. It was a magnificent goal. One player you would like Palace to sign, past or present? If Palace could sign any player then it would have to have been Bobby Moore. He was an incredible footballer and also a hero of mine, not just as a footballer but as a bloke. We

became good friends aswell, so if we could sign anyone it would be him. What is your usual pre-match routine when you come to the ground? I often have lunch with my friend Robert Newie, who I sit with, and then we drive down to the ground as he has a parking space. I actually have a seat in the directors box so I sit there along with Robert and his friend Martin. Funniest moment you can recall watching Palace? I mentioned this in my book actually. I remember we took the lead in a home game, I can’t remember against who, and as we sunk back into our seats a gentleman called Frank Milano said “Only 89 minutes left to hang on.” It kind of optimised what a terrible life it is like to be a Palace fan. The worst Palace moment? I think when I really thought we might have gone out of business recently. So that is it really. We have been relegated but if we had been no more then that

would have been terrible. When I used to present 606 on radio five I remember a bloke ringing up when it looked like Doncaster were going to go out of business and the bloke came on the air absolutely distraught and he said that he could not possibly go and watch anybody else regularly. For true football fans, the club you support is the club you support for life, like it or not and if we had gone out of business then there would have been a lot of fans in a similar position. Where did you watch the crucial game against Sheffield Wednesday? I watched it at home. It was terrible to watch. Watching the Cup Final was hard as well, I do watch a lot of football away from Palace, and I think I enjoy it more as when you care so much it takes some of the enjoyment away.

CRYSTAL PALACE v SWANSEA CITY

David James’ move to Bristol City raised a few eyebrows - as did his admission of being drunk when the club first approached him. “I thought I would either stay with Portsmouth, move to a Premier League club or go to Scotland,” the keeper wrote in his column in The Observer. “In between thinking about all that, there was my wedding to organise. Somehow it all converged at one point, the morning after my stag do. “I received a phone call from an unknown number. I don’t usually answer those, but I was still drunk and so I picked it up. “Much to my astonishment the man on the other end was Steve Coppell. He said, ‘All right Dave, I’m the Bristol City manager, and was wondering if you’d be interested in having a look at the club?’“

Jay Bothroyd starred in Cardiff’s 4-0 win away at Leeds on Monday but urged fans not to get carried away. The Bluebirds went level on points with Championship leaders QPR but Bothroyd insisted: “There’s a very long way to go as we’re not even in November. We’re not getting carried away like Cardiff have in the past. “We earned the right to beat Leeds and we must not forget that. If it looked easy, it was because we made it look easy. “I am pleased that goals are coming but I’m just glad to be doing my job for the team.” Boss Dave Jones said: “We need a base to build from which the lads at the back did but we feel our best form of defence is to attack. Even when we were four goals up people were working hard.”

AROUND THE GROUNDS_

Vito Mannone is hoping for his chance to impress at Hull after his loan move from Arsenal. The Italian would have been in contention for a Carling Cup place if he stayed with Arsene Wenger’s team but instead he is competing with Matt Duke for a place in Hull’s starting XI. “I have already been working very hard in training,” Mannone said. “It isn’t easy coming in when the season has started and the other guys are already playing, but I’m trying to show everything I can in training. “Playing in the reserves would give me an opportunity. It’s a game, it’s 90 minutes and that game time will be good. It’s a chance to show the manager what I can do. “I am aiming for a first team place, I can’t lie about that. I’m here to play, to gain first team experience.”

Sven-Goran Eriksson’s arrival at Leicester has sparked plenty of excitement but the new manager has told fans not to expect David Beckham to arrive at the Walkers Stadium. Eriksson worked closely with Beckham when he was in charge of England, but he insisted: “The story should be killed at once because it will not happen. “There is nothing in it, but I can tell you that if David wants to come here to play football then he is more than welcome. But I doubt that he wants to play in the Championship. “I haven’t spoken to him for a long time but I can easily do that, but I know the answer.” The Foxes boss, however, is still ambitious and added: “We want to play Premier League football as soon as possible - next season if we can.”

Scunthorpe captain Cliff Byrne scored against Watford last Saturday and dedicated the goal to his son as it was the first since Callum’s birth. The Irish defender also paid tribute to his wife after the Vicarage Road strike, a 20-yard volley, He said: “I was pleased with the goal, I dedicated it to my son Callum and so I’m pleased for him. He’s just coming up to five months. “I’m just getting about a full night’s sleep. My wife does the midnight feeds before the games so I’m fresh for the action.” Byrne also praised another new arrival - Freddie Sears on loan from West Ham. He added: “He has only been here a week, but he has settled in really quickly. He is a bit of a jackin-the-box. There is a spark about him, he is quick and direct.”

_ON THE ROAD

MIDDLESBROUGH vs CRYSTAL PALACE SATURDAY 6TH NOVEMBER 2010 KO: 3:00PM NPOWER CHAMPIONSHIP

ON THE ROAD STADIUM: The Riverside Stadium. ADDRESS: Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough, TS3 6RS TELEPHONE: 0844 499 6789 EMAIL: enquiries@mfc.co.uk GETTING THERE: By Road - Leave the A1(M) at junction 49, signposted to Teesside, and join the A168, which after approximately 11 miles will become the A19.

After this game today against the high-flying Swans, the Eagles make the long trip up to Middlesbrough to face a struggling side no doubt newly invigorated by the arrival of Tony Mowbray as their manager. Perhaps it was no surprise that Gordon Strachan parted company with Boro after just a year in charge. The charismatic Scotsman never rekindled the success he had at Celtic in spite of bringing in a whole host of players from Parkhead. What makes the appointment of Boro hero Mowbray all the more intriguing is that it was he who succeeded Strachan at Celtic and sold many players to him at the Riverside. The likes of Barry Robson and Scott McDonald have not really delivered on the reputations they built up north of the border, and will be eager to impress the man who sold them. Mowbray was always likely to be chairman Steve Gibson’s choice as he is a legend in those CRYSTAL PALACE v SWANSEA CITY

parts; notching up 424 appearances for Boro and sticking with them in the darkest of times of financial strife at Ayresome Park in the lowest divisions. With the club currently in their lowest league position for the past 20 years Mowbray knows he has a big job to do, saying, “I’ve got an opportunity to steer us back to where we want to go and that is towards the Premier League. Our ambition is to get the club moving back in the right direction.” Palace have a decidedly mixed record against Middlesbrough. Whilst the Eagles drew and won the clashes between the sides last season, you have to go back to May 1994 to find the last time they won up in the north-east when goals from Chris Armstrong, Gareth Southgate, and David Whyte sealed a 3-2 victory. Indeed Palace have never won at the Riverside. What a perfect time to break the duck! By Chris Waters

Approximately 19 miles later take the A66 eastbound towards Middlesbrough town centre. Stay on the A66 past the town centre (on your right) and follow signs to the stadium, which you will see on your left. Parking - Matchday parking at the Riverside is restricted to permit holders. There is, however, parking in the town centre. By Rail - There are regular trains running every half hour - on the hour and half past the hour - from London Kings Cross to Middlesbrough station. Approximate journey time is 3hrs 20 mins, and both journeys require one change at Darlington Station. FROM THE STATION: The station is approximately 15 minutes walk to the Riverside Stadium. To start, turn left out of the station and onto Zetland Road, and then left again at the crossroads onto Exchange Place. Following it under the bridge, take the first right onto Bridge Street East and then right again onto Windward Way. Carry on for around half a mile, go over the roundabout and the Riverside Stadium is situated on your left on Dockside Road.

Behind the scenes with Bill Relyea, the host of Happy Hour. For the last eight seasons Bill Relyea co-presented a fun filled show with Chris Green on Palace Radio. The pairing saw their 90 minute show evolve from the early days of the “Weird and Wacky Show” to the slick “Wibbly Wobbly World”. Due to work commitments, Chris cannot continue with the double act this season, but we look forward to seeing him back sometime in the future. In addition to a new title, Bill has changed some features on the show this season, however continues with the charity fundraising. This is one of the serious items on a light-hearted show, where in conjunction with Ladbrokes, money is raised for good causes. Dave Butters from Ladbrokes visits the studio each home game, and generously give us a free £10 bet. This year’s charity is “I Care” a Day Centre in Green Street Green, Orpington offering

palace radio rehabilitation and support to stroke victims, and their carers. Over the years, almost £5,000 has been raised for a variety of charities, and a huge “thank you” goes to Dave Butters and Ladbrokes for their continued support. Bill has written and presented many fun features over the years, and last season saw the spoof “Palace Radio Auditions Talent Show” affectionately referred to as P.R.A.T.S. With this seasons show entitled “Happy Hour”, Bill wants to put a smile on the faces of Palace fans. He thinks that most people are taking things too seriously, and we live in a culture of being negative. He therefore actively encourages listeners to get in touch with a more light-hearted look on life. To help him in the studio, he is joined by technician Rebecca Prout. She not only works the control desk, but also puts up with Bill’s nonsense! After over 40 years of supporting Palace, Bill has an extensive knowledge of the club, and has seen many changes. He sees the current set up as one of the best for a long time. As expected, it is taking

time for the new personnel to settle, and he’s looking forward to good times ahead. Also, good times ahead for the “Happy Hour” so join Bill on Palace Radio.

INTERVIEW_

Hi Andy thanks for taking the time to speak to the Palace programme. At the weekend we took on Preston at Deepdale, how did you see the game?

I thought we played well in parts and gave away some disappointing goals. Earlier in the season when we went three goals behind the scenario may have been different, but the positive thing to take out of the game was that we managed to fight back and nearly get something from the game. To come back after 4-1 to 4-3 showed a lot of character, but to not get a result was really disappointing for the team as we put so much into it in the second half. But we have got to keep going, take the positives and take that into the next game. It was a game that saw you get your first goal for the club and in a way it was probably a bittersweet feeling when we did not get anything from the game? We were 4-1 down

at the time and I grabbed the second goal, and because we were chasing the game I could not really enjoy the moment. I was pleased to score, I have had a few chances this season which I have not taken but it was good to get off of the mark. However, all that was on my mind when I got the second was getting another and then seeing if we could get something from the game.

What did the manager say to the team at the break and at full time, following the defeat? He said to us

that the next goal was key after the break, so it was a case of getting a goal as quick as we could which did not happen but we still managed to make a game of it. Afterwards it was just about

talking about what we did wrong, how we would look at the video of the game in the week and how we did well to get back into the game and unlucky not to equalise before the end. Would you agree that it has been the story of our season so far that we have had quite a lot of chances to score in games at crucial times and in turn have allowed other teams to score and take the initiative? Yeah probably.

It has happened quite a few games now where we have been on top and it has come back to hurt us in the second half. Goals change games and if you don’t take your opportunities then you will be punished. Obviously it is a long season and we have just got to start putting that right as soon as possible really.

Are there any worries within the team, regarding our position and getting out of the relegation zone? Every

player is aware of the position that we are in in the league. I wouldn’t say it is a worry, it is a concern but we have been playing well. The results have not been forthcoming with exceptions to a few of the games. Hopefully the results will come and we can pull ourselves up the table as the league is still very close, and if you can string a set of results together, three or four games then you can move up the league very quickly. Today will see us take on Swansea at Selhurst Park. They are currently sitting third and it will be a massive game for the club after two defeats on the trot. It will be a big game. We

at Selhurst Park and a few not so good, and on Saturday we really need the three points. The fans have been incredible in the matches so far, coming home and away and if they get behind us, like they usually do, then that will help the team. We want to go out there and win and send them home happy come 5pm, and the best way to do that is for us to work hard out there on the pitch and get a win. On a personal note, how have you found adapting to the Championship?

Obviously it is a lot different from Scotland, it takes a bit of time to get used to. In Scotland there were only 12 teams, here there are 23 other teams in the division but it is good to be playing different teams all the time. It is quite an exciting league as well, in terms of its unpredictability. I think that

is the case because anything can happen in this league. It is not set in stone who will go up or who will be in a relegation battle and it is up to the teams to play their way in or out of certain situations. It has been shown already in the league that anything can happen to any team on any day.

How have you found it working with George Burley? It has been good.

He is a very positive manager who just wants us to get better as a team. We have kind of been put together this year and it has taken us time to gel but we are working on it every day to get better.

have had some decent results

Alex Warner OUR POPULAR CONTRIBUTOR WRITES HIS LATEST VIEWS ON PALACE DIRECT FROM HIS SEAT IN THE UPPER TIER OF THE HOLMESDALE ROAD STAND.

One step forward, two steps back – that’s why we support Palace, for the nerve-shredding, baffling weeks when we win at the third placed team, then go 4-1 down to the second from bottom side, before causing a crazy last few minutes by fighting back to 4-3. Life’s so crazy following the Eagles that you wouldn’t have thought we’d need a “Family Fun Day” to help get bums on seats. But, here we are, back at Selhurst and “Kids go for a Quid” on this family orientated afternoon at our wacky home and there’s sure to be more thrills and spills, ahead of us this afternoon. Three points are important, but the prize today that’s really crucial is to convert kids to the Palace religion, consign them to a lifetime of chaos and emotional trauma supporting the Eagles. It’s that vital. Last weekend my five year old son scored his first ever goal as he participated in a football coaching course in Orpington involving dozens of children of all ages. It’s naive of me to be surprised, but I was dumbfounded by him being the only lad wearing a Palace replica kit. The chap who sits in front of me on the Holmesdale wasn’t shocked – it’s the same at his local school a couple of miles away, all Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal tops. Of course, parents and kids reading this will be all too familiar with this situation, but it still hurts and it’s depressing to think that little has moved on in the 30 years since my childhood was totally scarred by being the only Eagles CRYSTAL PALACE v SWANSEA CITY

WORLD SOCCER_

with Gavin Hamilton WORLD SOCCER is the undisputed authority on international football. We have the editor of World Soccer writing exclusively for the official matchday programme.

CHILE SPAIN Franklin Lobos, one of the rescued Chilean miners, was previously a leading player in Chile’s professional league and played alongside a young Ivan Zamorano, one of Chile’s greatest ever players. ‘I reckon that when he was trapped down there he would have gone back to the way he was in his playing days,’ says Zamorano. ‘He’s a very fiery man, who used to drag his team-mates up by their bootstraps. I’m sure he was key to helping them stay alive down there. Back then he was the star of the team and I only played every so often. ‘I remember he used to strike freekicks with his ankle which put a special spin on the ball that I’ve never seen a player repeat since.’

Jose Mourinho is not having things all his own way at Real Madrid. Earlier this week, his side could only draw 0-0 with third-division Murcia in the Spanish Cup, despite Mourinho saying that any players who did not perform would be ‘dead’. Mourinho was compared to fictional Mafia boss Tony Soprano when he warned of serious repercussions for his players if Madrid repeated last season’s 4-0 cup defeat by lowly Alcorcon. ‘If last year’s situation repeats itself, I will cross those who play off my list because they will be dead to me,’ he said. However, in the Spanish League and Champions League, Madrid are getting their act together. In their four most recent matches, against AC Milan, Malaga, Racing Santander and Deportivo La Coruna, they have scored 18 goals and conceded only three.

WORLD

ITALY Toto Schillaci, Italy’s goalscoring hero at the 1990 World Cup, has a new career as an actor. He has been cast as a Mafia gangster in a new Italian TV series. ‘For someone like me who is a great Robert De Niro fan, this was an incredible offer, one I couldn’t turn down,’ Schillaci said. It’s been a busy week for landmark birthdays of footballing legends. Pele turned 70 last week while Diego Maradona celebrates his 50th birthday today. The pair have rarely seen eye to eye over the years. Only last week, Pele said: ‘He [Maradona] is not a good example for the youth. If he doesn’t change, he won’t have any more work. He was a great player, but is a negative example.’ Pele planned to celebrate the occasion ‘the same way I did the 69 previous birthdays... with my family’ while Maradona had ambitious plans to travel to Naples, scene of some of his greatest triumphs as a player. However, Maradona’s plans had to be shelved after the Italian taxman announced he would be pursuing Maradona for the £30million he owes in back taxes from his time at Napoli. The last time Maradona travelled to Italy, he was relieved of his diamond earings at customs as part payment for his outstanding tax bill. WWW.TWITTER.COM/OFFICIAL_CPFC

_REVELATIONS

R.I.P MALCOLM

5 September 1927 – 14 October 2010 You will not be forgotten

It was very, very sad to hear the news of Malcolm Allison’s passing at the age of 83. Allison was a flamboyant, often outspoken character but also a visionary coach who was ahead of his time. “Big Mal” had two managerial stints at Palace, and will always be best remembered for the CRYSTAL PALACE v SWANSEA CITY

famous FA Cup run of 1976 when we were a Third Division side. Victories over Leeds, Sunderland and Chelsea saw us reach the semifinals, where we lost at Stamford Bridge in a disappointing match to Second division Southampton. Allison became Palace manager in March 1973, and his first game in

charge was a 2-0 win over Chelsea, the first time we’d managed a win over any of our London rivals since gaining promotion in 1969. Amongst the scorers that day was one Jim Cannon, making his Palace debut. Allison couldn’t prevent our relegation that season, and was true to his promise of “taking us straight out of this division” the next year. Unfortunately, we went out at the wrong end, suffering a second successive relegation. Big Mal indelibly stamped his identity on Palace, changing the nickname from the original “Glaziers” to the current “Eagles”. He also changed the club colours from the original claret and sky blue, borrowed from Aston Villa, to the current red and blue stripes, seeking to emulate Spanish giants Barcelona. Allison eventually resigned in May 1976 after failing to gain promotion, paving the way for Terry Venables and the “team of the 80s”. He did return for a very brief two month spell during 1980-81 where he failed again to prevent relegation during a disastrous season which saw Palace have four managerial changes, plus a change of chairman. Big Mal left Palace to manage Galatasary in Turkey, and went on to have a colourful career, which included several overseas assignments, and also managed Plymouth, Yeovil and Middlesbro to name a few. Allison struggled with his health in his latter years, but will always be fondly remembered by Palace fans as the cigar-smoking, Fedora wearing, larger-than-life character whose team played with flair and passion. Enjoy the game. Chris Roe, Club Chaplain.
