Good afternoon to you all and firstly I would like to welcome Roy Keane and all the players, officials and supporters from Ipswich Town Football Club. Ipswich are a club that obviously hold special memories for me as a player and a manager. I still have many friends at Portman Road and wish them all the best for the season, once this afternoon is over of course. The opening three games have soon come and gone, and having worked hard as a group in such a short space of time it was pleasing to see us produce the kind of performance we did against a strong Leicester side on day one of the season. Leicester are a top class side, they were in the play offs last season, they have a lot of experienced and quality players, so of course I knew they were going to be a strong test. We had formed a side that had virtually never played together. Julian Bennett only arrived twenty four hours before the game and Owen Garvan hadn’t trained with us at all. To come off the field against them speaks volumes of the experienced players, our youngsters and the club in general. WWW.CPFC.CO.UK

IT WAS GOOD TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO NAME NEIL DANNS ON THE TEAMSHEET... I FELT I NEEDED HIM ON AT HALF TIME AND HE MADE A BIG DIFFERENCE TO THE TEAM.

It is great to be working with so many good young players, and it is something I have always enjoyed in my managerial career. I am proud of my record of producing so many good youngsters who have gone on to gain international recommendation at senior level. Our attention the following midweek turned to the Carling Cup with a trip down to Yeovil Town. I decided to give another youngster a chance in this game, and I thought Nathaniel Pinney started well and could have had a hat-trick in the first twenty minutes in a very bright start for us. Yeovil came back in the game after that, but I thought we finished the game the stronger after we changed things around a bit WWW.TWITTER.COM/OFFICIAL_CPFC

and got the goal to win the match. Kieran Djilali added some width to our play and he showed that he is a talent and another very good youngster we can call upon. It is good for the youngsters but we know that they are coming up against men. The experienced players are playing well at the same time and doing a good job working with and helping them with their games. The league is the most important for us but winning games is a nice habit, and even though we could have made it easier for ourselves we are in the next round with a tie down at Portsmouth that will be a good test for us. Last Saturday at Barnsley we were poor in the first half and

basically never got going. The second half saw us lift ourselves and we had some half chances to get back in the match, but we just couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t convert any into an equaliser. It was good to have the opportunity to name Neil Danns on the teamsheet. He missed the first couple of games due to suspension and had to stay out of some sessions last week because of a groin strain. I felt I needed him on at half time and he made a big difference to the team. I was disappointed to be coming away with nothing to show for a better second half but there is still a long way to go. We all know there is still a lot of work to be done and know that the Championship is a tough league week-in, week-out. Although we have started with two long away trips, we have been greeted with great travelling support and we all appreciate it and it was clear what a difference your support made on the opening day. This really gave us all a lift as we took the field so more of the same today please. Enjoy the game. George Burley.

CAPTAIN’S COMMENT Ahead of my second home game as captain, I am pleased to look back on what has been a positive first couple of weeks for us. Granted the Barnsley result was not what we wanted, nor expected, but we managed to get our first win of the season against a team that, I think, will be one of the ones to beat this year and then following it up with an excellent win against Yeovil. I said in my notes ahead of the Leicester game that we would be looking to capitalise on the good feeling surrounding the club by getting the three points under our belt. But what I hadn’t quite expected was to be three up before half time given the quality that they bring to the table. Even so, I felt it went to show exactly the level of quality this team can offer and the breed of football that we can play as a team. Of course we were put under the kosh in the second half, but I thought that showed another side of our game; a resilience to battle for the result and not cave in under pressure. The young lads that came in, I thought, did very well. Wilf Zaha took his goal with the sort of cool head you would expect from a more experienced striker, and Kieron Cadogan worked hard, tracking back at every opportunity and then breaking forward to cause their defence problems. Of course the youngsters are not always going to be consistent, and I don’t think anyone at the training ground expects that of them, but when they are on song they are a joy to watch. It will be important for everyone to be patient with them, and throw their support behind them because we have got a special bunch of young lads coming through who WWW.TWITTER.COM/OFFICIAL_CPFC

We followed that good result with our Carling Cup game against Yeovil Town down at Huish Park. It is a tough place to go to at any time of the year, but when you have to travel down there three days after a tough opening day fixture it suddenly became a game where we could have so easily have slipped up. But we didn’t, and I thought our performance was professional and fully deserving of a place in the next round. We maybe should have scored a couple of goals early on but we didn’t, and like all good teams we dug in right to the end and saw the result out. Alan Lee scored a fantastic goal, an opportunist goal, right at the death that came as a massive relief to everyone because it meant we didn’t have to play extra time or go to penalty kicks. It gave us all a big lift and I was delighted for Al, who has started the new season really well and long may that form continue. So, to have started so positively in our first two games, the defeat at Oakwell was especially disappointing. In the first half we didn’t play as well

as we know we can, and it seemed that we were just unable to get going, which in itself is something we must address. However, in the second half we knocked the ball about a bit better and created some half chances. On a personal level it was devastating to score that own goal, but it is up to me now to pick myself up from it, put it to the back of my mind and get on with today. Ipswich come here today as one of the early form teams, so we will be expecting nothing less than a difficult match. They have a really strong squad, and so we know it is not going to be easy. But, as I said at the beginning of the season, we have got enough in our dressing room to be confident of getting a result against any team. On one final note, it is great that the club is moving forward, and hopefully over the next couple of weeks we can strengthen the squad with one or two bodies and push on for the rest of the season. FANS TO THANK FIRST- AIDERS WITH £16,000 CHEQUE Crystal Palace fans will formally show their gratitude to the men and women of St John Ambulance this afternoon after raising thousands of pounds in a heavily supported online campaign. Hundreds of Crystal Palace fans clubbed together to raise some £16,000 for the first aid organisation, in direct response to St John Ambulance London being left with unpaid debts when the former CPFC went into administration. A JustGiving campaign was launched by long-time fan, Paul Browning. As a result of the marvellous generosity of the CPFC fans, a cheque will be presented to a team from St John Ambulance London on the pitch at half-time today. “The strength of feeling among our fans was very clear from the outset,” said Paul Browning. “As the discussion grew on the forum, I came up with the idea of establishing a Just Giving page – and it just developed a momentum all of its own.

“Before we knew it, people were talking about it on Twitter and Facebook, and the money was rolling in.” Talking about the overwhelming response to the fundraising campaign, he added: “I was absolutely astounded by the reaction to our campaign and I’m just so pleased that the power of the internet and social media has allowed us to reach this amazing sum of money for such a great organisation.” Dave Bell, Assistant Commissioner Operations, said: ‘We have been providing medical cover at football clubs across London for decades. The passion and generosity that was shown in this effort by the Crystal Palace fans really goes to show how valued our work with clubs is and what a difference we make to so many. ‘In addition to our members being strategically deployed to react quickly and carry out first aid when and where needed, we also play a significant part in discussions of stadium issues and are able to help put measures in place to ensure best practice.’ He added: ‘On behalf of St John Ambulance London (Prince of Wales’s) District, I would like to extend a huge thank-you to all those who contributed to the funds.’

Selhurst Super Draw The winner of the Selhurst Super Draw from our opening match of the season against Leicester was Linda Phillips from Crawley. She has been a season ticket holder at the club for the past 33 years and left the game a couple of weeks ago with a cheque for £600. SUPPORTERS’ FORUM INITIATIVE The Club and supporters groups are coming together to set up focus groups that will contain about 8/10 fans. These will cover various areas that are seen as being important to fans off the pitch. The groups will meet about once every two months and cover the following topics:

FROM THE TRUST As part of CPFC2010’s initiative to improve communication with fans and fans’ groups, the Supporters’ Trust was delighted to be invited to meet Steve Parish, co-chairman of the club, last month. In a highly productive meeting lasting around three hours, Steve Parish discussed a range of issues with members of the Trust Board, including chairman Alan Palmer. This was the first opportunity for the Trust to speak formally with CPFC2010, and an opportunity to exchange ideas about the future direction of the Club. A number of issues were discussed during the meeting, including: • Closer relations between the Club, Trust and other supporters groups. • A new Club membership scheme. • Improving and renovating Selhurst Park Stadium. • Ways in which the Trust and Club can work together. A part of the discussions centred around the Trust’s AGM in June, attended by about 100 Trust members, where a healthy discussion took place about how to work with the Club. These ideas included work to raise funds for the academy, to re-build the main stand, and help with other aspects of the Club such as training facilities. Further discussions will now take place to focus our efforts on some tangible contributions that the Trust can make to assist in the re-building of our club. The Trust very much welcomes the opportunity to work with CPFC2010 and other fans groups in the coming season and beyond to help the club move forward. SEE THE PALACE ALL STARS Ella Funnell Memorial All Stars Match Crystal Palace v Brighton Simon Funnell and his partner Lucie have organised a memorial football match and fun day in memory of their baby daughter Ella on Sunday 5th September 2010. The organisers are planning a fun family day out with Steve Kember’s Crystal Palace All Stars side competing against Simon’s Brighton & Hove Albion’s All Stars side. Ella died just before Christmas at just 18 days old, she had a Group B Strep infection which caused Meningitis. She became poorly very quickly and died within 24 hours of her first symptom. Simon and Lucie have chosen to support two charities with the proceeds of the day. The Group B Strep Society raises awareness of the Group B strep infection which kills approximately 75 babies each year in the UK. They are keen to tell people about the screening which is available (although only privately) at a cost of just £30. Meningitis UK

are searching for a vaccine against Meningitis in general and highlight the fact that this terrible disease can kill in under four hours. A warm welcome to all the fans to the game today. Its been a busy couple of weeks with away trips to Yeovil and Barnsley but thankfully its been relatively quiet on the injury front. There are no new injuries to report on from the two games and hopefully we should have a full squad available for today. Sean Scannell had his operation last Wednesday and the good news is that it went better than expected. The damage in his knee was less than originally thought and this is a great boost for Sean. If things go well we hope that he will be back in six to eight weeks. He is already doing well, working on his range of movement, strength and also using the bike in the gym. Lee Hills continues to do well. He ran outdoors for the first time this week which is a big step as it is the first time he has ran with his full body weight. He has been training

on a treadmill, which can reduce your body weight progressively, over the last couple of weeks. Unfortunately he has picked up another injury â&#x20AC;&#x201C; blisters!! Having not worn boots for five months, he donned a brand spanking new, purple pair! Serves him right I say, no place for coloured boots in my opinion... ANKLE SPRAINS Ankle sprains are a common injury in sports and especially football. It happens when the ankle rolls inwards either as a result of a tackle, landing awkwardly or twisting. The ligaments on the outside of the ankle become overstretched and torn. This leads to swelling, pain, stiffness and weakness. In mild cases players can often return to sport within a week to 10 days. In more severe cases, it can take up to 3 months to return to play.

Although it is far too early to be taking league positions with any long term considerations, Ipswich’s current fourth place must already be an encouraging sight for their supporters. This is simply because this time last season, Ipswich were setting out on one of the worst runs of form in it’s history. Understandably it is a mantel that the club is struggling to shake off, seeing as it was one of the more memorable aspects to the 2009/10 Championship season. down, on the opening day of this season at the Riverside went some way to banish the demons of 2009. Following that, Keane watched his side knock three past Exeter City, albeit requiring extra time, to progress to the next stage of the Carling Cup. And then last weekend they were close making it three from three when Clarke Carlisle’s late strike earned Burnley a last minute draw at Portman Road. So things are vastly different this season, and Keane is looking to build on the positive feeling by bringing in some sizable additions to his squad. They currently lead the chase for Jason Scotland, from Premier League side Wigan, and have allegedly made an audacious £4 million bid to bring in Michael Chopra from Cardiff City. Their arrivals would take some of the strain off a team hit heavily by injuries over the past few weeks. Much like Palace some of the club’s youngsters have been called upon to take up some of the strain, and the Ipswich manager is wary of overplaying them at such a young age: “We’ve got to be careful with them, but I didn’t have a choice on Saturday. There are not too many managers around at the moment who could ride the sort of pressure that Roy Keane faced three months into last season. Amid his self-proclaimed confidence in pushing for promotion, Ipswich went fourteen games without a win and found themselves bottom of the Championship table by the end of September. It was not the sort of start everyone was expecting considering the level of success he had achieved in his first managerial role, when he took Sunderland to the Premier League in his first season. In fact it was the club’s worst start to a season in 40 years, and even Keane himself expected to be sacked for the team’s poor form. But the club’s chief executive Simon Clegg threw his support behind the manager, and stood firm in their decision not to relieve him of his duties. Asked if Keane’s job was secure Clegg responded: “Absolutely secure. Roy continues to enjoy the complete and absolute support of the owner and myself. “I very much feel I and the rest of the club support him and that will continue.” In the end, the win did eventually arrive when they beat Derby County at home, 1-0, on October 31st. But it had seemingly already done the damage to Ipswich’s season and instead of a top of the table push, the Tractor Boys were forced to stave off a relegation battle. This season, Keane has employed a decidedly different approach to things – not mentioning promotion. “Last summer there was too much talk about promotion and all of that came from me,” Keane said. “This time, let’s wait and see what happens.”

[17] Andros Townsend Position: Midfielder Nationality: English A lightning fast winger, Townsend is currently on a season-loan from Tottenham Hotspur. He joined the Spurs academy in 2008 where his form for the Under 18s caught the eye of lower league managers, and he spent the final part of the 2008/09 season on loan at League One Yeovil Town. He then built on his experiences in the south west with further loan spells at Leyton Orient and MK Dons last season, before joining Ipswich in the summer. [24] Colin Healy Position: Midfielder Nationality: Irish Healy began his career with Scottish giants Celtic during the 1998/99 season, where he played 49 times over three seasons before moving to

Sunderland on a free in 2003. After two years in the north east he moved back up to Scotland to play for Livingston at the back end of the 2005/06 season, and then joined Barnsley on a free ahead of the 2006/07 season. But he managed just ten appearances throughout that campaign, and was sent out on loan to Bradford for a month in November. Cork City then signed him in 2007, but he again struggled to make an impact during his two year stay and Ipswich picked him up last season. Norris’ season has got off to a flier with three goals already from his three opening games of the new season. His brace in the Carling Cup helped Ipswich see off a spirited Exeter challenge, with his second coming in extra time to seal a 3-2 win. And he added the third last weekend with an 86th minute strike that appeared to have given Town their second win of the Championship season, until Clarke Carlisle popped up in the 92nd minute to level the scores. It all means that Norris has already surpassed his goals tally from last season, which was a solitary strike in February against QPR, and equalled his best Ipswich return which was the three he scored in 2008/09 – his second season with the club. He had joined Ipswich the season before from Plymouth Argyle after six seasons, 235 appearances and 27 goals with the Pilgrims. The Somerset club had rescued him from a difficult spell at Bolton Wanderers in 2002, where he had made just one appearance in his two years following his £50,000 move from Boston United during the 2000/01 season. Ipswich paid a reported £2 million fee for Norris in January 2008 and secured his services on a three-year deal, which will keep him at Portman Road until 2011.

Ipswich Town were moments away from making it three wins from their opening three games when Clarke Carlisle scored in added time to cancel out David Norris’ 86th minute opener and give 10 man Burnley a draw. In the opening stages of the game, it was Ipswich’s latest signing Andros Townsend who, on a season long loan from Tottenham, provided Ipswich’s major attacking threat. He fizzed a shot across the face of goal and also forced Brian Jensen to smother the ball going down to his right-hand side from a 20-yard skidding effort. In response, a flowing move from Burnley finished with Wade Elliot needing only to finish from six yards but he was denied by a super save from Marton Fulop. In the end though, the away side’s task was made a lot harder when they were reduced to ten men eleven minutes from time. David Edgar took one for his team when, as the last man, he blocked Norris’s forward run as the midfielder threatened to break clear and referee Grant Hegley had no other option but to show him a second yellow card. It almost proved a pointless sacrifice as six minutes later, Norris connected with a Jon Stead header across goal with a clever backheel past Brian Jensen to give Ipswich the lead. It was Norris’ third goal in two games and the second time he had put Ipswich in a winning position. After last season’s infamous poor start, how much of a relief do you think it was that Ipswich got their first win of the season on the opening day? Well the

whole plan over the summer was to get off to a decent start, because it was the middle of October before they got six points and they were all draws, so they were playing catch up really from the start. So all the sights were set on them getting a good start and that is what they did at Middlesbrough with a 3-1 win, and they played very well indeed. When they went 1-0 down, did thoughts turn to last year? Possibly yes because

Middlesbrough are favourites to go up to the Premier League, so it was possibly the hardest fixture they could have had to begin with. But they came back, got three goals and in the end were so much on top that Boro were chasing shadows really. Do you think Roy Keane is still battling to win over some fans after that poor start? Obviously

it was a very disappointing season last season. It started off with expectations sky high having got Keane as manager at the back end of the previous campaign, and Keane having got Sunderland up at the first attempt when he was manager of them, but it just didn’t work out. It was the worst start in the club’s history. The manager has still got most fans on his side, but there are some that would

have liked to have seen more success and more progress. But the way this season has started, it is looking as if it could possibly happen this campaign. To a degree, was it a surprise to see Keane still in the manager’s seat at the start of the new campaign?

I don’t think it was a surprise. All managers need a while to stamp their authority and to get working well. You look back at all the successful managers, it took time before they got into the groove, so to speak, and Ipswich are a great example. Sir Bobby Robson took three or four years, and fans were calling for him to go but then look what he achieved - UEFA Cup, the FA Cup and nine years out of ten in Europe. is different to the last campaign, and at the moment it seems to be working. They had a good win at Exeter with a very depleted side four days after the Boro win. Despite having six players who would have played against Palace being injured, they are still making the most of what they have got. They have some good young players who have been given their chance to come through, and with the money from Jon Walters’ move to Stoke this week for £2.75m they have some cash to bring in some newcomers, particularly strikers which will happen soon. Who will be the player to watch this season for Ipswich Town?

There is a young lad called Luke Hyam who has played all three games this year, playing in front of the back four and doing very well filling that niche role with a certain amount of calmness and assurance. And of course there is Connor Wickham who turned 17 at the end of March and made big strides last season when still 16. He is tipped for a big future. Clubs like Arsenal and Spurs have been looking at him with talk of bids of £6 million, but he is staying an Ipswich player this year and he will make a big impression. At the moment though he is out injured, because he hurt his ankle in pre-season, and it will be another month or six weeks before he is back in action again.

1960-61

Palace kicked off their third season in Division Four on Saturday August 20th with a home fixture against recently relegated Accrington Stanley. With new signings George Petchey and Ron Heckman in the team, Palace opened the scoring in the first minute through Johnny Byrne following a corner that signalled four goals in the opening eight minutes. Accrington quickly equalised, but then Alan Woan netted twice in as many minutes to put Palace in the driving seat. There was further joy as left winger Heckman scored on his debut and Byrne showed some of his magic, waltzing past three defenders to net the fifth, while Accrington pulled it back to 5-2 just before the break. MEMORABLE MILESTONES_

1920-21 As a precursor to the start of the club’s first ever season in the Football League, a public trial game was held between the club’s players. It attracted a crowd of around 3,000 to The Nest on the afternoon of Saturday 21st August where a goal from Ben Bateman gave a slender 1-0 victory to the Stripes over the Colours. Palace’s historic inaugural fixture in the Football League took place on Saturday 28th August in the Welsh Valleys at the Penydarren Park, home of Merthyr Town, who had former Palace forward Tom Barber in their line-up. Kicking off at five o’clock the Welshmen took the lead midway through the first half, but early in the second George Milligan marked his debut by scoring Palace’s first goal in the Football League to equalise. However, Merthyr scored again with a goal that was allowed to stand despite protestations from the Palace players for an offside decision, and our first ever game in the Football League ended in defeat. The following Wednesday afternoon and our first Division Three game at The Nest kicked off against Plymouth Argyle as a crowd of just under 10,000 witnessed the same Palace eleven gain their first point in a goalless draw.

GEORGE MILLIGAN Very little is known of George, who enters the Palace history books as the scorer of our first ever goal in the Football League but his only two appearances in the first team came in these opening two games. Born in Glasgow, George was linked with Burnley in 1913 but joined the club from Clyde F.C. in the summer of 1920. However, he left at the end of the season and it seems he returned to his native Scotland with Armadale F.C. a club in a town of that name situated between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

1990-91

New defenders John Humphrey and Eric Young made their debuts along with Glyn Hodges in the Palace team that took to Luton Town’s plastic pitch for the first game of this Division One season on Saturday 25th August at which away supporters were unable to attend. It was the latter two players who combined to give the Eagles an early advantage, when Young headed home Hodges’ free kick in the 15th minute. Palace could have wrapped up the points in the first half but in injury time Iain Dowie scored for Luton (again!), and in the second half the recent midweek trip to Italy with two games in three days seemed to take its toll as the game meandered to a draw. When Chelsea came to Selhurst Park three days later the Eagles took an early lead when Andy Gray thrashed home a sixth minute penalty, but five minutes later he was involved in a scuffle with Dennis Wise and both players were sent off. Midway through the second half Ian Wright collected a crossfield pass from John Humphrey, turned the Chelsea defence inside out and then lofted the ball from twenty yards over Dave Beasant to put Palace 2-0 up. Ten minutes later Tony Dorigo hit a 25 yard free kick that took a deflection off Young to wrong foot Nigel Martyn, but Chelsea could not stop Palace collecting all three points while the 27,101 crowd generated record receipts of around £226,000.

With the Holmesdale Stand adorned in blue and red ribbons that stretched down from the top tier to the bottom, a new era in Crystal Palace’s history was ushered in as new owners Steve Parish, Martin Long and Stephen Browett were introduced to the Selhurst Park crowd. But it was the three goals in the first half that really got things started with a bang. Wilfried Zaha, Darren Ambrose and Alan Lee all converted to round off a thrilling first half performance and, despite City pulling two back in the second half, all but sealing the first three points of the season. Zaha opened the scoring for the Eagles on 19 minutes when a ball up to Alan Lee from midfield was knocked down to the edge of

the box, and he was able to use the bounce to turn his marker before firing a super half volley, with the outside of his boot, past Weale. Things then got even better as Palace found themselves twoup seven minutes later when the Leicester defence backed off, and backed off Ambrose on the edge of the box. The midfielder needed no more excuses to shoot, and he fired a low effort from 20 yards that Weale could only parry against the inside of his own post and into the back of the net. Zaha then showed again why he has been so highly rated at the Beckenham Training Ground, when he did brilliantly inside the box to work himself some shooting space, only to see his effort parried into the

path of Lee for a simple tap-in. The visitors came out for the second half a changed side and pulled one back on 57 minutes when Lloyd Dyer found an overlapping Robbie Neilson on the right wing, who then crossed for Andy King to head home five yards out. Leicester continued to pile on the pressure, and it paid off six minutes from time when an error from Claude Davis was pounced on by Steve Howard, who then played a brilliant pass across the box for DJ Campbell to finish with a simple tap-in. In the end though it proved too little, too late for the Foxes and Palace held out for their first win under George Burley, and their first three points of the Championship season.

Both sides went into this game on the back of an opening day league win as attention turned to the first cup competition of the season. Palace manager George Burley’s team selection was hit by injury, suspension as well as Owen Garvan being away on international duty. Nineteen year old Nathaniel Pinney started the game in one of three changes from that win on day one. The young striker made an impression early on when he spurned two decent chances to put his side ahead. The first came on four minutes when he picked up a loose ball just outside the box and his fierce shot was turned over the bar by goalkeeper John Sullivan. Just a couple of minutes later he was in again but his shot was again blocked by the ‘keeper.

It was his strike partner, Calvin Andrew, who had the next chance when his header was pushed away by Sullivan as the League One side continued to soak up the early pressure. The home side replied at the other end but were denied by the woodwork. Luke Freeman, on loan from Arsenal, saw his shot hit the bar after he collected a cross by Nathan Jones. Town were in again when Dean Bowditch received a through ball just inside the box but he turned the ball over the bar with Julian Speroni to beat. In the second half Palace thought they had taken the lead early on when the ball was played through to Darren Ambrose. The midfielder made no mistake firing past Sullivan only to see the official

flagging for offside. Zaha then nearly added to his opening day effort when he was on hand to meet a cross from Nathaniel Clyne, but his diving headed chance went just over Sullivan’s goal. In response the home support were left frustrated when they thought referee Phil Gibbs should have awarded a spot kick when Bowditch went down in the box under a challenge, but the appeals were waved away by the official. And those frustrations were compounded deep into added time when a cross from the left by Djilali was spilled by the keeper, which fell to Cadogan whose shot was blocked. But Lee was on hand to turn in the rebound for his second goal in two games to give Palace the late advantage.

With Palace Player cameras in attendance the Palace Legend gave his verdict on how the club is moving forward with new owners and a new manager. “George Burley was very successful down at Ipswich and he has got a lot of experience in this division. I expect him to give it a real good go this season in the Championship.

“More importantly I feel that the structure behind what is going on the pitch is solid now. I know a few of the guys that are involved and I think their hearts are in the right place, but I think their business minds are in the right place as well. “Sometimes in football the two get confused and emotions blur somebody’s aims and visions and try to do things too quickly sometimes, which I think that is a hindrance. “The club nearly went to the wall in the summer and now there is a much more solid foundation at the club and we cannot allow that sort of situation to happen again.” David Wright also featured on Palace Player this week with our new feature ‘My First’ making its debut. finished last season as a hero. A saviour. A legend. The sight of him rising among a throng of players to thump Darren Ambrose’s corner into the back of the net will forever be etched in the memory of every Eagle who witnessed that historic match back in May. That 24th minute header against Sheffield Wednesday has already been marked as one of the most important goals in the history of Crystal Palace Football Club. Alongside Ambrose’s strike in the same match, its significance will rightly sit amongst the very best moments in the club’s history And the fact that it was Alan Lee who got it was just reward for a player who had given heart, soul and plenty of blood fighting for the club’s very survival. Countless thumps, endless whacks and more than his fair share of head bandages served as painful testament to the level of commitment Lee showed, and continues to show, every time he puts on the Crystal Palace shirt. It is this commitment and passion that has helped him come through a difficult start to his Eagles career. In his first season at the club he struggled to pick up any sort of momentum thanks to an injury suffered only a couple of weeks into it, and then he was sent out on loan to Norwich City once fit. But the following season, after watching his number nine shirt given away to Stern John, Lee began fighting his way back into the team and winning some sceptics over at the same time. “I know I had a difficult first year with the club and, rightly so, I had a lot to prove to the fans last year. I thought I did that and the response I got at the end of the season was wonderful. It is very gratifying when that happens and I know how lucky I am.” Asked whether he could pinpoint the reasons behind his turn in form, Lee admitted that in his first few months with the club he struggled to settle to life in south east London.

The long term injury and pressures associated with returning to fitness as quickly as possible were compounded by the fact he was some distance from his home and family. “Apart from the actual injuries, which are your worst nightmare getting injured in your first weeks, a lot of it was to do with pressure you put on yourself when you are injured. “It is a different life when you are injured, it is horrible. But I came back into the team and didn’t play well. “I went out on loan to Norwich and played very well I felt, and I managed to get my confidence back. From day one last year it all seemed to work, I got the luck of the bounce so to speak. “I think as well since last year I have been travelling home. Spending a few nights in London to come into training and then going home for a few nights, half and half, was very unsettling. “So since last year I have travelled in and it is something like 65 miles but to be at home, I love living in the countryside, it makes you a lot more settled. So I think that is a big part to play as well.” THE FIRST On the field things look like they are shaping up a THREE little differently this season, POINTS WERE thanks to the arrival of new manager George Burley. ESSENTIAL The Palace boss is an BECAUSE enthusiastic advocate of playing football on the floor, IT CALMS getting the ball out to the EVERYONE’S wings and keeping things simple. NERVES. For Lee it means less of a battering ram-type role and more of a classic striker’s role, lining up alongside another striker and looking to attack crosses in from wide positions, and latch onto through balls from the midfield. Of course there have still been occasions when he has been called to hold the ball up and absorb some of the more physical challenges from the opposition defences, but he has also already benefited from the new system with two goals from his three games – both of which have come after good work on the flanks. But, and again typical of Lee’s focus on team ethic rather than individual recognition, when his excellent start to the season is put to him, he is quick to play it down in favour of emphasising the team’s performances. Alan playing for Cardiff City scored a 55th minute equalizer against Ipswich Town and his future club at Portman Road to bring the Bluebirds back to 1-1. Alan’s goal was simply a consolation as Ipswich won 3-1.

“It is not about the goals. I am happy with the way we played, especially in the first half against Leicester. “They are a good side and I thought we really gelled well. The three points were essential because it calms everyone’s nerves, and I am sure we can play some good football when we are on form.” It is a similar case when approached about how the new system seems to offer him more frequent goalscoring opportunities. Rather than admit preference to one system or the other, he instead reiterates his commitment to whatever duty he is asked to perform. “You are there to do a job and when you are asked to play that role on your own up front it is very difficult because you know that, goals-wise, you won’t get as much opportunity. “But that is why you need experience. You know that someone who doesn’t know the game might say ‘eight goals, that is not a great return’, but someone who knows and watches the games could see that it was a really important role that I was playing. “Any forward would tell you that he would rather play in a system where he will get more chances, so I don’t like to call it the right or wrong way because that is the way we did it.” Going into today’s game, Roy Keane’s men have also enjoyed a positive start to their campaign and come to Selhurst Park as one of the early form teams in the division. Lee featured in over 100 games for the Tractor Boys and left Portman Road as a firm favourite when he moved to Palace in 2008. It was the club where he strengthened his reputation as a highly effective Championship striker, scoring a total of 18 goals before he moved on. He is expecting a tough encounter today, but is also confident that if the Eagles can recapture the form they showed in the first half of the Leicester game then a win is most definitely on the cards. “It will be a very tough game, it always is. They have a lot big name players, they have spent a lot of money and they will be very tough. “But I think if we are right and play like we did first half against Leicester, and against Yeovil, then we can cause everyone trouble. We don’t worry too much about the opposing team, it is about us being on top of our game. “We have a really nice mix of players, everyone is bright and bubbly, training is very sharp and I think those couple of wins, okay the second was in the Carling Cup but that the importance of a first day win is vital, it calms the nerves and that was essential. “We were disappointed with the result at Barnsley, we know we can play better than that and we will be looking to do that on Saturday.” CRYSTAL PALACE v IPSWICH TOWN

On the day it was a disappointing performance from the lads, because I think mentally the players did not approach the game in the right way. as focussed as they should have been. Despite this I would rather it happened now rather than when we start our league programme on Saturday. It was a wake up call to the lads of how they must approach every game in a professional manner. A lot of the players were down after that game because for some it was their last chance to secure their place for the start of the season. I am sure some of them will be a bit anxious now as to whether they have done enough to stay in the team. Today we take on Leeds in our first Academy League game of the season, and it will be important to get a good start in the league as that can fill you with confidence and take the pressure off. academy news First Year Academy Scholar John Williams became the second youngest player ever to represent the Wales U21 team two weeks ago when they played Malta in an international friendly. Wales Coach Brian Flynn called up the 16 year old after being impressed by the youngster’s record in the U17s, where he has scored one goal in 12 games. Williams played the last 30 minutes of the friendly at the Ta’ Qali Stadium, and was happy to have made the the squad, never mind playing. “It was a really good experience for me to play with other professional players from other clubs and to go away with the national team to Malta. “It was quite hot out there which made training a little bit harder, but I felt I did well when I came on for the last

half-hour. After the game I was told I was the second youngest player to represent Wales U21 team with Aaron Ramsey currently holding the record.” With a fresh season of Academy football to look forward to this year Williams is now concentrating on cementing a place in Gary Issott’s side. “We start our season away at Leeds on Saturday (today) and I am just focussing on training hard each day and playing well for the Academy this season.”

We are also very happy to be continuing our excellent partnership with The Priory Sports College in Orpington, where students in years 12 and 13 are able to study in conjunction with their football development alongside our club. This has great benefit for the students as they receive quality coaching and experience from within CPLFC, and are able to progress towards full first team involvement. As far as the playing side is concerned we have a brand new management team in Ian Jackson and Richie Callaghan. They have been working very hard preparing the ladies for the season ahead in the South East Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Combination league. Our young ladies team feel that they learned a lot last season and are fully prepared for the season ahead, which really showed in their final pre season friendly against Old Bromleians Ladies in a game that they won convincingly 6-0. After a frenetic first half in which Palace dominated proceedings they were caught out by a very frustrating offside trap on numerous occasions and the ladies were told by Ian and Richie to calm down and play a slower, more patient passing game in the second half. The half time talk really paid off as they played some fantastic football, producing six goals in the process. A great hat trick from Sherelle Walters, a brace from Abigail Ingram and a goal from Louise Feeney was enough to seal a comprehensive victory and set up the season ahead. We also have a very successful junior section ranging from U11s to U16s. After many years of dominating the FA Kent league we have moved to the more competitive FA Surrey league and we are really looking forward to the challenge of competing with established successful teams such as QPR and Croydon FC. The Junior season kicks off on 12th Sept and all home games are played at Langley Sports Centre in Beckenham. Beloved of Liverpool fans for his calm, unfussy displays during five years at Anfield, Finnan proved last season that he can still do a job at the highest level, playing 21 times as stricken Portsmouth reached the FA Cup final.

Injuries have dogged Hendrie in the last few years, but his ability is beyond question. In 14 years at Aston Villa, he scored 32 goals and played over 300 games – he was even given a solitary cap for England in 1998. Something of an enfant terrible in his youth, he is now a calmer head who can play through the middle or out wide. Released by Derby in May after just nine games. I also like to get to the match with my sons, Alexander and Viktor at least an hour before kick-off to spend a bit of time sitting in the empty stadium watching the warm-up routine. The funniest moment you can recall watching Palace? A local newpaper used to advertise itself at the ground by having headlines of the week adjacent to the pitch. At one match, the lead story banner said: “Brothel keeper jailed”, which prompted my five year old son, Alexander to ask aloud, “What dvisision are Brothel in?” Cue much laugher from surrounding fans. Worst Palace moment? Losing to Leicester City in the play-off final at Wembley in 1996 in the dying minutes was particularly gut wrenching.

Selhurst legend Steve Coppell was the first Championship manager to leave his post, walking out on Bristol City after just two games. It wasn’t the first time either as the former Manchester United winger famously quit as Manchester City boss after just 33 days in 1996 and has never gone public on that bombshell decision. This time round he has been slightly more forthcoming by claiming he couldn’t get “passionate” about the Robins, with the conspiracy theorymongers insisting it was really because the signing of keeper David James had put a huge dent in the transfer kitty. Coppell will always be warmly remembered by the majority of Palace fans and the same goes at Reading, who he led to the Premier League in 2006. But he walked away from the Royals too and don’t expect him in another dugout anytime soon.

Craig Bellamy is back in the Championship after plumping for a loan move to home-town club Cardiff City. And that represents a major coup for the Bluebirds as the fiery Welshman is still one of the game’s top forwards. Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini may have decided to freeze him out in favour of other stars, prompting Bellamy to push for a move to the Welsh capital, where his wife and family are still based. Cardiff have signed big names in the past - Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Robbie Fowler spring to mind but none was in his prime like Bellamy, who was superb for City last term.

Norwich City’s boardroom is the place to be this season. With Delia Smith in charge of the food, new director Stephen Fry can provide the humour if the match isn’t up to scratch. The cash-strapped Canaries are hopeful Fry’s showbiz contacts and huge Twitter following can attract major investors.

Portsmouth, who entertain the Eagles in the Carling Cup on Tuesday night, are hopeful their financial woes will soon be at end after Balram Chainrai - the man who plunged them into administration in the first place - agreed to take over once again. So far this term Pompey boss Steve Cotterill has only been able to put four substitutes on the bench, all of them untried kids. The hugely-experienced Aaron Mokeona was forced to miss last week’s 1-1 draw with Reading as he was delayed in his return from midweek international duty with South Africa. But Cotterill is hopeful he can at last sign some new players, and was adamant that winger Tommy Smith, currently injured but a target for Scottish outfit Rangers, would not be sold.

Gary Speed has been handed the task of restoring Sheffield United’s ailing fortunes after Kevin Blackwell became the Championship’s first manager to be handed his P45. Blackwell was fired minutes after his side slumped to 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Neil Warnock’s Queens Park Rangers, who netted all their goals in the first 23 minutes. Former Wales star Speed agreed to step up from his post as first-team coach and signed a two-year deal. The Blades had previously blocked a summer approach from Swansea to make them their boss. United fan Warnock, who had a successful spell in charge of the Blades before Blackwell took over, tipped the new man to do well. He said: “Gary is a good lad and he will do a good job. But I think Blacky has been unlucky.”

At this time of year the fixture computer likes to throw up a few oddities. Thanks to the international games on the first weekend of September the Eagles find themselves facing three away games in a row (Portsmouth in the Carling Cup, Scunthorpe, and Reading) before they next touch down in SE25 in over three weeks time when Pompey come to Selhurst Park. There are good odds that the team Palace will face on that day compared to the side they will face in the cup this week will be markedly different, and not just because it is a cup match. Portsmouth’s financial woes have been well documented in the press, and the Eagles’ faithful will only be too aware of the pain of the club’s fans at this point. How many of their key players they will be able to hold on to before the transfer window closes will go a long way to determining how they fare this season. Bouba Diop, Tal Ben-Haim, and Nadir Belhadj in the summer (at the time of writing), there are many clubs being linked with Tommy Smith and John Utaka and it is conceivable many more will leave to try and reduce the wage bill during administration. Though the club were recently victorious in court in a case that could have seen the rejection of a CVA, the weakened side has yet to win in the league, although they came agonisingly close last weekend when a late Jimmy Kebe equaliser at Fratton Park meant the spoils had to be shared with Reading. The Eagles have a poor recent record against Pompey, having not won against the south coast club in the last six encounters. The last win was the unforgettable 4-2 victory under Steve Kember as we incredibly managed to escape certain relegation in 2001. A similar battling spirit would be most welcome this time around. Cost for parking is £5. Otherwise there is street parking in the immediate area surrounding the stadium for around 200 cars. Please note that some of these areas do enforce time restrictions, so be careful to read the notice signs. By Rail:- The closest station to Fratton Park is Fratton Station. There are regular trains running from London Waterloo on the hour and on every half hour (15:00, 15:30, 16:00 etc). Approx journey time is 1h 24 mins for the trains on the hour, and 1h 29mins for the trains on the half hour. Neither journeys require a change. From the Station:- Once at Fratton Station, exit via the footbridge and turn left onto Goldsmith Avenue. Continue along for approximately half a mile and Frogmore Road is on your left. Fratton Park is situated at the bottom.

Les Carroll died on May 11th aged 44 after a devastating 14 week fight with Kidney Cancer, leaving behind a wife and four children. THE JACK PETCHEY ACHIEVEMENT AWARD SCHEME Established in 1999, The Jack Petchey Foundation gives grants to programmes and projects that benefit young people aged 11-25. The foundation is eager to help young people take advantage of opportunities and play a full part in society. The major focus of their work is the Achievement Award Scheme. The foundation focuses on London and Essex, since it has been established the foundation has awarded grants totalling over £65million. We have had over 40 volunteers with a range of ages and backgrounds who have attended

the Study Centre for a minimum of two hours per week, many actually giving up two evenings to support the children who attend our Playing for Success [PfS] after school sessions here at Selhurst Park Stadium. The volunteers take part in an induction course before our schools come in, so that everyone is better prepared to support each pupil on their personalised learning programme. The volunteer duties range from hearing pupils read, supporting groups in higher thinking skills activities, participating in collaborative games, preparing the snacks to passing on IT skills, encouraging pupils with their maths and literacy as well as taking on the

Crystal Palace FC Community Sports and Kelsey Park Sports College School have joined forces to create a Centre of Footballing Excellence. This exciting programme will give youngsters between the ages of 16 and 19 the chance to combine academic studies with practical football experience. The programme commenced with 14 trailists being put through their paces on 16th August but we are still looking for a few more. So if you think you could be a star of the future then the Footballing Excellence programme could be for you. The programme is essentially in two parts: during morning sessions: students will complete a BTEC First Diploma National Award or Certificate in Sport. Students will also receive training in football coaching leading to FA Coaching Badges, emergency aid and a grounding in child protection issues and practises. In the afternoon sessions, students will train daily and play on a competitive basis – an experience similar to that of Crystal Palace FC’s own Academy to which students may progress. Completing the one/two year programme, will give students skills required to help them progress to a higher standard of football as well as gain experience necessary to work in community football/sports coaching. This unique package is a fantastic opportunity for youngsters keen to develop their talents on the football pitch and a route into a career in football/sports coaching or within the leisure industry as a whole. The annual Sutton Playday event took place at the Sutton Arena on Wednesday 4th August. Sutton Play Day is a three-year project funded by Sutton’s Big Lottery play initiative funding to support children aged 5-16 and their families with free play opportunities in their community. The aims of this project are to work with voluntary/ community groups, or other local organisations in deprived areas to identify their needs around the development of play/diversionary activities. The Community Sports Trust was invited to attend this year’s event to provide all the footballing activities the children and young people required. Football Development Officer Michael Harrington and Community Coach Chris DeSousa attended this great day, and were delighted to offer so

many children the chance to come along and practice their football skills and play in small sided mini soccer matches. ‘It was a really fun day’ began Michael, “we had skills contests, World Cup matches and Champions League tournaments. The boys and girls really enjoyed it, not even some heavy rain could stop them from playing’ During the day we were busy handing out free raffle tickets to the parents/guardians of the children playing. Behind the scenes with Palace Radio’s Engineer What is your job at Palace Radio, how long have you been involved and what previous/ present experience in radio do you have? My role involves looking after all the behind the scenes engineering work. This involves absolutely everything from maintaining the studio equipment to the AM transmitter and aerial system. I joined the team in 2001 during Simon Jordan’s first season as club owner. What is your normal routine and what are you responsible for on matchdays? I have very little to do on matchdays. The secret of a successful radio station is in the preparation and I spend quite a bit of time at Selhurst during the week ensuring that everything is working before match day arrives. If there has been a breakdown with a particular piece of equipment it is much easier to sort out when we aren’t actually on air. Probably the busiest periods have been when the aerial has been blown down twice in the past ten years and has had to be re-erected before the next game. So on actual match days there is little to do except be on site incase anything breaks down, although I do share the job of rigging and de-rigging the commentary equipment with Daryl Murdoch. Setting up the microphone for our coverage of the after-match press conference is another duty.

palace radio What have you been doing behind the scenes to prepare the station for the coming season? As the seasons have gone by, we have become quite experienced with what needs doing during the closed season periods to ensure that everything works as it should. I also spend the summer installing any new equipment that we have managed to buy. And with each passing season we have equipped the studio with more new gear, such that there isn’t really anything new we need to add at the moment. This year the transmitter was re-furbished with new valves (yes- we still use valves) and I installed a network router for the computers in the studio. I have also had some work to do in the television studio which, amongst other benefits, means that we can now have the countdown clock back on the screens again. Why can’t Palace Radio broadcast on FM? The UK regulatory body Ofcom licenses Palace Radio. For sports events such as ours they only offer a medium wave frequency- at least within the M25. I believe that some sports Restricted Service Licences are available on VHF in other parts of the UK but in London that band is particularly congested and no available frequencies exist. In fact it would be of no real benefit to us to be on VHF since the power levels are more rigidly enforced and limited - so our coverage, whilst possibly sounding better quality within the stadium, would not cover the sort of area it does with Medium Wave.

Why can I sometimes pick up the signal in Eltham but not in South Croydon? One of my perennial problems every year is trying to respond to people’s requests to improve the reception of Palace Radio. The biggest problem is the aerial system. We are required by Ofcom to have the transmitter and aerial actually on the Selhurst Park site and to be honest there really isn’t anywhere suitable to build a proper AM Antenna. After we lost a couple of very good but “top heavy” aerials during October storms in the past we have resorted to what is commonly known as an inverted “L” aerial. This type of aerial is not entirely omni directional, and in fact our signal is beamed towards the East/NorthEast. Hence the signal tends to be much stronger towards Eltham and New Addington but less so in the opposite direction.

Hi Kieron thanks for taking the time to speak to the official club programme. You have come straight into the first team this season and played in the last three fixtures, you must be pleased?

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m over the moon if the truth be told. There were stages last season where I thought that this sort of opportunity would never come along, and now it has and I am just looking to carry on playing, training hard each week and making it impossible for the manager to drop me. What did the manager say to you at the start of the season?

He did not say a great deal really. He just told me to go out there, enjoy myself, have fun and that is what I have been doing really. Before we played Leicester he took me to one side and said to me that I am in the team by merit so just show everyone what I can do. When you think back to last season and how you were not really playing, you were sent out on loan, playing quite a lot of reserve games, it must have been hard to think that come this season you would be in the situation you currently find yourself in.

Fundamentally that is what being a footballer involves, obviously having a fair amount of ability, but coming in each day, listening, learning and trying your best will get you to where you want to be. Keeping that focus at times can be hard but that is what you have to do in order to succeed and that goes for anything really, not just football. You always get knock backs, I got knock backs early in my career but if you keep going then you can achieve what you want. What was it like during the summer being a Crystal Palace player with all the uncertainty surrounding the club?

in this sport. Last season was a very frustrating one for me as I felt all I needed was an opportunity to show my worth. I scored 17 goals in 17 games for the reserves which gave me a lot of confidence. It demonstrated that when given an opportunity in front of goal I could take it. I was hoping that through those performances and training hard I would be picked to play in the first team, but for one reason or another that did not happen. I believe everything happens for a reason, and I have just got to take my opportunity now. You scored a goal in pre-season against Brentford, that must have given you a lot of confidence going into the new campaign.

It was nice to get a goal in pre-season but as of yet I have not had a real strike on goal this season in terms of the league and cup games that we have played in so far. I am not frightened to shoot, but at the same time I am not going to shoot for shooting’s sake. do so, it is just about choosing when it is best to do one or the other. Some of the fans may not be aware that when you first came for trials at the club you were not taken on, which must have been quite hard. Why did you decide to come back?

After initially being rejected I was invited the following season to come back and I also had an opportunity to go to Fulham on trial, but it was actually my mum who told me to come back here. I didn’t want to come back as I thought it would be embarrassing. After being rejected and having got released once, I did not want to be rejected again, but my mum felt this would be the right club for me and ever since then it has gone well, so I have to thank my mum a massive amount for steering me in the right direction.

It was quite nerve wracking to be honest, incredibly so. You did not now what was going on and we were in the same position as the fans, watching the news and just waiting. When it came up on Sky Sports News that we had been saved the relief was unbelievable. Having survived relegation it was an overwhelming sense of joy that we now would stay as a club and all that effort was not to waste. I was buzzing and said to myself now I need to make my mark. Finally, we face Ipswich at home today, what do you make of Roy Keane’s side?

They have got a good team but you cannot be afraid of any team and you have got to play the game, not the occasion and just have confidence in what you are capable of and everything else should take care of itself. It is 11 men against 11 men, I don’t look at it any other way really.

In many ways that shows how mentally strong you were, to put those feelings behind you and let your feet do the talking?

If one match could epitomise everything that made us yearn for Palace’s survival during our darkest hours last May, then it was our opener against Leicester a fortnight ago. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one thinking “that’s why Palace had to be saved” when walking out of Selhurst after the most invigorating curtain-raiser in seasons. Our game against The Foxes was classic Crystal Palace F.C. billed as relegation certs before kick off, we strutted in the first half with such charisma and breathtaking panache that most of us were pinching ourselves for a reality check. In typical Eagles manner the game kicked off emotionally – if it’s not a crisis or return of a former hero (more of which later) to invoke tears, then it’s a procession from our saviours. Buoyed by the profoundness of the occasion, the Palace team were unstoppable. Then, inevitably our heroes delivered a second half performance that made for fantastic entertainment and the last few minutes were played out to dinning whistles from the Eagles faithful, imploring the referee to blow for full time as we hung on for dear life with our incredible keeper pulling off countless saves. “Glad all Over” was almost drowned CRYSTAL PALACE v IPSWICH TOWN

out by cheers as the players left and we celebrated as if it was Hillsborough 2010 all over again. It was classic Palace – hurtling us from one extreme to another. Onto Yeovil and an Eagles performance that lacked its customary chaos, saw us win in the 90th minute. Ordinarily a game in front of a parochial lower-league crowd in a fixture we’d probably rather had not had to play, invariably ends in us exiting at the death in some goalmouth scramble. Not this time, though and once again Alan Lee delivered the goods. Criticised by some during the early stages of his Palace career, farmed out on loan to Norwich, Lee is now very much an Eagles hero. There’s more to Alan than goals, we often say, though in doing so we neglect the fact that he isn’t shy of the net and his header at Hillsborough was arguably one of the most crucial goals in the history of Palace. He is indeed, the ultimate team player - scrapping, scuffling, nodding, passing and getting under the skins of defenders, whilst acting as a foil and providing the encouragement and experienced head alongside young pups. “Scoring goals for Palace…Alan Lee” to the tune of The Beatles “Let it Be” is one of the most enjoyable of chants – mainly because it usually accompanies the opposition keeper retrieving the ball from the net. – may it be repeated as endlessly as the Fab Four’s vintage version. The first eight days of the season brought with it a tale of two departing managers – one leaving intentionally and the other walking off the end of a plank. It was only the timing of his sacking that seemed surprising in the case of Sheffield United’s Kevin Blackwell. We’d sensed something wasn’t WWW.TWITTER.COM/OFFICIAL_CPFC

quite right during United’s dreadfully insipid performance at Selhurst last March, though that Boardroom patience snapped so soon after the campaign started does seem strange and makes a mockery of pre-season preparations. Perhaps the view is that it is better to act sooner whilst the season can be more than just retrieved. Blackwell will be smarting that it was a 3-0 defeat to his fierce rival Neil Warnock’s QPR that precipitated his departure. Failing in two Play-Off Finals seemed to have deeply affected Blackwell and perhaps he should have called time after United’s 2009 Wembley defeat – certainly his post match comments suggested he was wondering whether there was a point to it all anymore. Such a sentiment appeared to have been shared by the magnificent Steve Coppell last week as he claimed he “no longer had the passion for football management” and resigned after only two games at Bristol City. Not for the first time, Coppell’s demeanour brings out the psychologist in all of us – as we search to make sense of an intensely philosophical, contemplative and deep thinking individual whose desire to shun the spotlight is alien in a world where egocentricity is viewed as a virtue, and those with incomparably miniscule achievements bellow them grotesquely from the rooftops. It’s testimony to Steve’s desire never to gloat, that media coverage summarising his managerial CV last week all failed to mention his taking Palace to

third spot in the top flight, as well as keeping us up during administration – not to mention winning our only Cup (ZDS). Then again, why should we be surprised – after all, when Palace clinched third spot with our 3-0 devouring of his old club Manchester United – where was Steve in the lap of honour? He was miles from Selhurst on a scouting mission deliberately timed so that he could avoid all the limelight and acclaim, just as he was halfway down the players’ tunnel as the final whistle blew at Villa Park in 1990. For most of us with dull lives and humdrum jobs, the thought of lacking passion for one’s occupation when it is as exciting as that of a football manager, may seem absurd – even if it is with Bristol City – a club that hasn’t really endeared itself to Palace fans of late. Passion is an oft over-used word anyway – in business, “passion” is the buzzword and brownie points are offered to those who are “passionate” about people or customer service or safety or merely for the vocation they’ve chosen – serious stuff, but are these genuinely the source of true passion? Family is sacrosanct, a given, but I’ve only really felt passionate about Palace, nothing comes even close to that. Maybe Steve felt the same – having achieved so much at his beloved Selhurst and then Reading, a spell at a Club where he had little affinity and little to prove may have felt like jumping on the kind of treadmill we’ve all endured in our career. At least he had the guts to go with his first instincts and not lead City a merry dance. Good luck Steve and I hope you find real happiness – you are one of the most decent blokes football has ever known.

Starting with Chorley, he moved to Plymouth Argyle in July 1973, featuring prominently as they reached the League Cup semi-finals in 1973-74 and won promotion in 1974-75. He joined Ipswich in a £220,000 deal in September 1976 and was top scorer in three successive seasons, starring in their 1978 FA Cup and 1981 UEFA Cup final triumphs. The older brother of England international Joe Baker, he played for Larkhall Thistle, Chelsea, Motherwell, St Mirren, Manchester City and Hibernian before moving to Portman Road in December 1963. He scored 58 goals in 135 League outings for Ipswich prior to joining Coventry City in November 1967. Capped four times by the United States, he became Margate’s player-boss in 1970 and was later with Nuneaton Borough before managing Bedworth United and RC Warwick. TREVOR WHYMARK England international striker Whymark topped Ipswich Town’s goalscoring charts on four occasions. Initially with Diss Town, he moved to Portman Road in May 1969 and starred as Ipswich won the Texaco Cup in 1973 and mounted successive title challenges. He missed the 1978 FA Cup final triumph through injury, netting 74 goals in 260 First Division games before joining Vancouver Whitecaps in February 1979. Featuring in that year’s Soccer Bowl success, he later played for Sparta Rotterdam, Derby County, Grimsby Town, Southend United and Colchester United. He became a sales rep for a poultry firm.

JOHN WARK Scotland international Wark was top scorer and PFA ‘Player of the Year’ as Ipswich won the UEFA Cup in 1981. Signing professional in August 1974, he starred as Ipswich lifted the FA Youth Cup in 1975 and FA Cup in 1978. He was sold to Liverpool for £450,000 in March 1984 and won numerous European and domestic honours, returning to Ipswich in January 1988. After a year at Middlesbrough, he rejoined Ipswich again in August 1991 and helped win the Second Division title in 1991-92. ALAN BRAZIL The Scotland international striker was Ipswich’s leading marksman in 1981-82. Signing professional in May 1977, he was a key figure as Ipswich won the UEFA Cup in 1981 and scored a club record five goals against Southampton that year. He netted 70 times in 154 First Division outings before moving to Spurs for £500,000 in March 1983. Sold to Manchester United for £700,000 in June 1984, he was swapped for Coventry’s Terry Gibson in 1986 but a back injury ended his career soon after joining QPR in June 1986. He is now a football commentator on radio and television.

MICK BURNS Long-serving goalkeeper Burns played for Ipswich Town either side of the Second World War. Initially with Chilton Colliery, he joined reigning League Champions Newcastle United in September 1927 and contested a first-team slot with England international Albert McInroy. He moved to Preston in July 1936 and appeared in the 1937 FA Cup final, joining Ipswich in May 1938. Ever-present in their 1938-39 Football League debut campaign, he made 157 Third Division (South) appearances while at Portman Road before leaving in May 1952. He later became caretaker of a Roman

1969 as cover for Pat Jennings, he moved to Bury in July 1971 and later played for Stafford Rangers, Northwich Victoria, Leek Town and Ipstones. He worked in the building trade, then was a maintenance man.

KEN HANCOCK Goalkeeper Hancock was ever-present in Ipswich Town’s 1967-68 Second Division title triumph. A former Stoke City amateur, he turned professional with Port Vale in December 1958 and helped clinch the Fourth Division title that season. RICHARD WRIGHT England international goalkeeper Wright starred in Ipswich Town’s 1999-2000 First Division play-off final triumph. Signing professional at Portman Road in January 1995, he made his

Premiership debut in Ipswich’s 2-0 win at home to Coventry City four months later. He was ever-present in three successive seasons, helping Ipswich qualify for the UEFA Cup in 2000-01 and making 240 League appearances before being sold to Arsenal for £6,000,000 in July 2001. Understudying David Seaman in their 2001-02 ‘double’ success, he joined Everton for £3,500,000 in July 2002, then had a spell with West Ham and returned to Ipswich in July 2008.

Brazil have a new star. Neymar da Silva Santos Junior, known simply as Neymar, scored for Brazil against the USA last week and joined a select band of famous names, including Pele, who have scored on their senior international Brazil debut. A crowd of 77,000 in New York watched 18-yearold Neymar open the scoring for a new-look Brazil, while Alexandre Pato added a second. Neymar has been the star of this year’s Brazilian national championship for Santos, who have inserted a £26million release cause in his contract. New Brazil coach Mano Menezes rang the changes in his first squad, dropping many of the players who lost to Holland in the World Cup quarter-final in South Africa. Neymar’s Santos team-mate Paulo Henrique Ganso also starred, alongside Robinho, who captained the side. The 2-0 victory over the Americans was hailed by Brazilian fans as a return to ideals of ‘jogo bonito’ (the beautiful game) after the Dunga era which puts results before style. ‘Mano gave us a lot of freedom to do what we always do on the field,’ said Neymar. ‘He told us to play like we play for our clubs.’ Simple, really.

While the Football Association continue to ignore the advice of former international players on how to improve the fortunes of the England side, Italy have turned to Roberto Baggio to be their new technical director. It was a surprise move as Baggio has shunned the limelight since retiring as a player in 2004 and has only just begun to take his coaching badges. Baggio will concentrate on how to encourage clubs to give more first-team opportunities for Italian-born youngsters. It is a particular problem in Serie A where the average age of players last season was 27.44, compared to 26.69 in Spain, 26.57 in the Premiership and 25.9 in the German Bundesliga. There are other former players in high places within the Italian FA. Baggio’s former Milan team-mate Demetrio Albertini is now a vice-president and played an important role in Baggio’s appointment.

GERMANY Former England boss Steve McClaren is already making waves in Germany with his new club Wolfsburg. Wolfsburg look well placed to challenge for the Bundesliga title after some clever business in the transfer market. They signed Danish defender Simon Kjaer, who impressed at the World Cup, from Palermo and were also close to signing Brazilian midfielder Diego from Juventus.

European champions Internazionale plan to give Brazilian teenager Coutinho his big chance following the sale of Mario Balotelli to Manchester City. The 18-year-old forward was signed by Inter in 2008 but stayed on loan at Brazilian club Vasco Da Gama until earlier this year. Coutinho impressed Inter owner Massimo Moratti with his performances on Inter’s summer tour of America, with Moratti commenting: ‘We’re happy with the youngsters we saw in America, youngsters we had already seen. So we can stay calm.’

Real Madrid look set to give teenage star Sergio Canales a major role this season after Kaka suffered a serious knee injury in pre-season. Spain Under-19 star Canales emerged last season at Racing Santander, prompting Madrid to sign the youngster after he made just a few first-team appearances. He is now expected to start as Madrid’s playmaker in Kaka’s absence. Meanwhile, Kaka has denied claims by the doctor who operated on his knee that the player put his career in jeopardy by playing at the World Cup. Kaka said that Dr Marc Martens overstated the extent of the injury after he operated on the Brazilian’s damaged knee. ‘He is a great professional but he raised the alarm, he exaggerated a lot.’ Kaka is expected to be out until Christmas.

As Manchester City`s spending on new players exceeds £300 million since their takeover by the Abu Dhabi group, the distance between the super-rich clubs and the majority of others is not so much a gap, but more of a chasm that`s becoming increasingly impossible to traverse. Although having huge financial backing is not necessarily a guarantee of success, it’s surely inevitable that sooner or later, City will virtually buy the Premiership title. This won’t be the first time this has happened, with Chelsea having become champions after major spending a few seasons ago, as well as Kenny Dalglish’s Blackburn back in the mid-90s. The wider implications for clubs that are run this way are that emerging home-grown talent can easily be overlooked. Scott Sinclair, the 21 year old Chelsea winger who enjoyed a successful spell at Palace on loan, has also been on loan at Plymouth, QPR, Charlton, Birmingham and Wigan before finally moving permanently to Swansea, having never been able to break into Chelsea`s first team. Predictably, this will have inevitable implications for the England national team, with youngsters such as John Bostock already complaining that the incessant influx of foreign players CRYSTAL PALACE v IPSWICH TOWN

stifles the progress of our own up and coming talent. Failing takeover by multimillionaire backers, the only foreseeable way forward for the majority of clubs is to firstly, run the club on a sensible budget, resisting the temptation to take absurd financial risks. And secondly, to place priority on the discovery and nurture of talented kids who will be the future of clubs such as ours. All credit to our Academy, who have consistently produced gifted young players who have broken through into our first team. Wayne Routledge, Ben Watson, Tom Soares and Victor Moses, to name but a few, have all done well before moving on - the challenge comes in trying to hang on to our players when Premiership clubs come knocking on the door with seemingly irresistible offers. CPFC 2010, our new owners, have already made it clear that the club will be run on a sensible financial footing, and our Academy is the envy of many other clubs, and deservedly so.
