MANAGER’S COMMENTS
PAUL HART THE EXCLUSIVE VIEWS OF THE BOSS DIRECT FROM THE HOME DRESSING ROOM. We’ve reached a critical point in our campaign to keep Crystal Palace in the Coca Cola Championship and I sense everyone connected with our club is ready to play their part in our fight for survival. It’s hard for me to comment on what happened here over the months before my appointment. I do know we’ve been hit hard by injuries, suspensions and the general fall-out 4 | PALACE vs PRESTON NORTH END
from the 10 point deduction following the club going into administration. But just as there appears to be real, positive hope on the horizon regarding the ownership of the club being picked up by committed Palace fans we know there’s still a massive job to do on the field of play. It’s been a rocky run-in but I can only salute the overall attitude of the players and their determination to
ensure the campaign does not end in failure. They’ve shown plenty of guts, determination and no little skill even when Lady Luck has conspired against us. That’s why I was happy to see us enjoy some good fortune in our vital win at Watford last Tuesday. Boy, have we deserved a break! It’s not my style to spend too long in singling out players for praise. Having spent many of my formative years as a player with Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest and Howard Wilkinson at Sheffield Wednesday, I’m a total believer that it’s a team game and nobody can be relied on as a one man show to win games on a regular basis. Having said that, there are a few people I am prepared to salute. The first group worthy of our unstinting praise are the Palace fans. You’ve been great in standing by the team, encouraging them and delivering your noisy backing. You are worth your weight in gold and deserve to have a successful, thriving club at Selhurst Park. When the team were under the cosh at Watford last week the backing the away fans gave their team was brilliant. It’s easy to start talking about the crowd being a 12th man but take it from me, that really does happen. A noisy, exuberant crowd can intimidate opponents and bring the best out of the Palace boys. It’s

important that fans behave in an acceptable manner but noise and passion from fans is a vital part of English football. On the playing front I must salute the efforts of Paddy McCarthy in particular, but all the players have given 100% for the cause. We all know times are tough for our club. I’m writing these notes before our trip to Middlesbrough but we know we’re going to have to keep battling right to the end of the campaign to ensure we survive and hopefully finish with a flourish. The players have been magnificent. They deserve to see the season finish on a high. Today we welcome Darren Ferguson and his Preston North End team to Selhurst Park. I hope we have reason to celebrate a Bank Holiday triumph. So may I wish all of you and your families a Happy Easter. I hope you have a great time - and play your part in shouting us to victory today. Paul

CAPTAIN’S COMMENT
SHAUN DERRY SHAUN DERRY GIVES HIS LATEST COMMENTS DIRECT FROM THE DRESSING ROOM FOR THE MATCHDAY PROGRAMME.
Having played on Saturday, today’s game is going to be difficult for the players. There has been a lot of travelling to do and the Middlesbrough game was no doubt a tough battle. Saying that though it is the same for all the teams in this division. But we are now at a stage in the season where every point is vital and every performance must be of the highest standard so that we can edge ourselves clearer of the relegation zone. Sometimes though when you are in our position performances don’t always get you what you want. Having played so well against Cardiff in our last home fixture a week ago it was disappointing that we went home without even a point. Throughout the game we never really felt under serious pressure from a side who, let’s not forget, are a top six side and a promotion chasing side. I think that if you were to speak to Dave Jones and his staff after the match they would say that they came away with a result that was probably not a reflection on how they performed. I felt that we created enough chances to get at least a point, and but for a terrible refereeing decision we should have had a point. That result meant that our match against Watford was even more crucial. Being a local derby there was always going to be an edge to the game, but with them so near us in the table it heightened everything even further. We knew that three points were vital and we managed to go there and get them with a performance that, I think, will be more commonplace from this Palace team between now and the end of the season. I thought each and every one of the lads performed magnificently on Tuesday
“I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO OFFER MY SPECIAL THANKS TO THOSE WHO TRAVELLED WITH US TO VICARAGE ROAD. I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUPPORT LIKE THAT SINCE I HAVE BEEN HERE AND IT WAS DEFINITELY NOTICED BY ALL THE BOYS AND STAFF.” and can rightly be proud of the shift they put in for the team. Some may point to the luck that we had on occasion, but seeing as luck has seemed to have deserted us over recent weeks we will take every bit that comes our way. Watford were probably thinking that they were unlucky not to get something out of the game, but how many times have we been saying that this season? For me, I thought Paddy McCarthy was sensational for us. He was a colossus at the back for us and he proved to everyone with his performance what this club means to him. He wore his heart on his sleeve and threw himself into tackles, and his performance was no doubt a major factor in securing those three points. I would also like to offer my special thanks to those who travelled with us to Vicarage Road. I have never seen support like that since I have been here and it was definitely noticed by all the boys and staff. They really were our 12th man that night and we are going to require more of the same for the rest of the season. I hope that we will be going into today’s game on the back of, first of all, a positive
performance and hopefully at least a point against Middlesbrough. We are prepared for a difficult games, but we will be drawing upon the positives from our performance at Vicarage Road and there is no reason why we cannot leave with a similar result. Today though we will be looking at it as a must win game. Preston may find themselves in mid table and are probably secure now for next season, but they will still want to end their season on a high and so will still be looking for results. Our aim though is our survival and that will depend on one thing - getting wins under our belt. Enjoy the game, Shaun

The Fan’s Night was held at the Glaziers Bar on the 25th March and was greatly enjoyed by everyone who attended.
CPFC CEO Phil Alexander and Assistant Manager Dougie Freedman took questions from the floor on a variety of subjects ranging from the latest situation regarding potential purchasers of the club to the mood in the dressing room as the players fight to rise up the table. The Trust is delighted that the CPST logo appears on the players’ shirts today and would like to thanks the shirts’ sponsors GAC Logistics and the club for their close
involvement in this project that raises the profile of the Trust and further cements ties between fans and club in these difficult times. The money raised by fans in such a short time, £38,000, to sponsor the team today is

PHYSIO
the club’s physiotherapist NIGEL COX ROUNDS UP ALL THE NEWS FROM WITHIN THE TREATMENT ROOM. Welcome to the game As you can imagine it’s been a difficult period once again for injuries due to the amount of games in such a short space of time. This will be our tenth game in thirty-one days, the second such intense period this season. Fortunately we have no further midweek games following QPR at the weekend, so at least we’ll get reasonable recovery periods during the final run-in. We decided to cut down on the travelling recently by staying North after the Blackpool game as it would have meant getting home in the early hours of Sunday morning and then setting off again early Monday morning. The boys were in good spirits throughout albeit a little disappointed to let a 2-0 lead slip at Blackpool. It felt like a loss but in reality was a good point away to a team who have done really well this term. Spirits were lifted by Shorty on Monday morning though when he stripped down to his undies and braved the harsh North sea wind and rain, and proceeded to run off into the far off distance before plunging headlong into the Arctic cold ocean !!!......following treatment for Hypothermia back at the hotel, we set off for Nottingham ! We seriously thought the week was to prove even better as we started solid at the City Ground and felt confident we would come

away from the game with something. We felt we had a strong case for a foul on Clint Hill just prior to the sending off, but once again things went harshly against the boys....the story of our season really On top of that, we picked up injuries to important personnel in both games, Nick Carle left the Blackpool game with a slight calf strain, Danny Butterfield suffered a slight hamstring pull early in the Forest game and Alan Lee felt discomfort in his groin late on in the same game. As a result, putting out a strong side against Cardiff became a difficult proposition due to our constrained numbers, injuries and suspensions We as a medical team took the decision to include Paddy McCarthy a little sooner than we had hoped following an uncomfortable period he had experienced with scar tissue, but credit to him, he was determined to support the boys and help the team and so stepped into the breach for that game. I think you’ll agree that he’s done a great job for us despite being out for so long and returning without much prior match play. Congratulations Paddy.... and welcome back. We’ve had a little time since to work on the injuries and hopefully Nick and Alan will both be available for selection today. They both appeared on the bench at Watford but we were reluctant to use them to say the least. It was a bit of needs must, and all hands to the pump. Fortunately that spirit drives this group on and the result there was tremendous and vital for our survival hopes. Lets hope that with your support this afternoon we can show that spirit and character once again. Enjoy the game.

After reaching the Championship playoffs last season the decision to sack manager Alan Irvine midway through this current campaign came as a major surprise.
14 | PALACE vs PRESTON NORTH END
For a club not normally associated with snap decision making, Chairman Derek Shaw’s reaction to the club’s form of one win in ten league outings was not expected. At the time North End were in 16th place and eight points outside the play-offs and when the news broke it came even as a surprise to the players. Club captain Callum Davidson said: “Sometimes you see these things coming,” he told BBC Radio Lancashire. “But this one was totally out of the blue. He is probably the
best manager I’ve ever worked with.” Shaw was quick to find his replacement in the highly reputable former Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson who took charge three weeks later. Just over two months on and there has been marginal improvement in terms of league position – they currently sit in 14th place and are now 12 points away from the play offs. It has been their away form that has been their achilles’ heel in this campaign. A total of 12 defeats suffered on the road is the fourth worst in the league, while their away

goal difference of -19 is the joint third worst in the league. At home though they have proved to be a much stronger outfit, and with a record of eight wins, nine draws and just three defeats it is no wonder that defender Billy Jones has this week emphasised the importance of their home form: “We need to win our home games... Our aim was to win the four home games that we have left and push for a top ten finish. Now we have just got to take every game as it comes”
THE MANAGER: DARREN FERGUSON
“I’m very, very ambitious and with my name I cannot afford to fail,”; the words of Darren Ferguson upon his unveiling as Preston North End manager in January. So strong is the link between success and the Ferguson family name, as forged by his father Sir Alex Ferguson, that Darren Ferguson’s managerial career will most likely be forever measured against it. Up until now he has done little to tarnish that reputation after his success with Peterborough United. When he took over the Posh from the late Keith Alexander in January 2007 they were struggling to break free from a run of form of eight defeats in nine games. Ferguson managed to steady the ship and guided Peterborough to a 10th place finish. In his first full season he led them to second place and promotion to League One, and then followed that up the following year with another second placed finish and another promotion – this time to the Championship. Times were tougher in the second tier though, and with Peterborough at the foot of the Championship table by November 2009 he left the club by mutual consent. He wasn’t out of work for long though as the surprise departure of Alan Irvine from Preston North End presented the opportunity to walk straight back into a Championship managerial role. In January 2010 he was named as manager of Preston and took control of their FA Cup fourth round tie against Chelsea for his first game in charge. It proved not to be a fairytale start to his Preston career as goals from Nicolas Anelka and Daniel Sturridge won it for the Premier League side. But in the league it was a perfect start as in his very next game a solitary Neil Mellor strike gave him his first win and against his former club.

[1] Andy Lonergan Position: Goalkeeper Nationality: English A home grown keeper Longergan took his chance to secure a regular run as Preston’s first choice goalkeeper when Wayne Henderson suffered a back injury in September 2007. Brought through the ranks in the 2001/02 season, he gained experience with a series of loan moves at Darlington, Wycombe and Swindon Town before finally establishing himself as the Lilywhites’ first choice. Lonergan is also among the exclusive goalkeeping club that can lay claim to scoring a professional goal, having scored direct from an upfield kick out of his hands away in the 1-1 draw against Leicester at the Walkers Stadium in October 2004.
[19] Billy Jones Position: Defender Nationality: English A product of the successful Crewe Alexandra academy system, Jones made his debut for the Railwaymen at the tender age of 16 when he came on as a sub against Derby County. Although mainly a right-sided defender, Jones performed a number
of roles for Dario Gradi’s side and spent much of the 2005/06 season in central midfield. By the age of 20 Jones had played more than 140 games for Crewe and had captained England at every level up to U20s. But the Shrewsbury born player decided to move away on a Bosman in the summer of 2007 and Preston moved fast to secure his signature.
[12] Sean St.Ledger Position: Defender Nationality: Irish Sean St Ledger was former Preston manager Paul Simpson’s second signing in July 2006, signing for an initial three years for £350,000 from Peterborough United. The 21-year-old came through the ranks at the Posh and made his first team debut at 17 before going on to make 91 appearances, including 49 in his final season. After four seasons with Peterborough he moved on to the Lilywhites where he has since established himself as a mainstay in the back four and has made over 150 appearances. He enjoyed a loan spell with Middlesbrough earlier in the season where he managed 14 league starts and one goal.
[24] Elliott Ward Position: Defender Nationality: English Ward is on loan from Coventry City until the end of the season. He was Coventry’s first £1 million player for five years when he joined from West Ham in the summer of 2006. A product of the Hammers’ Youth Academy, Ward made 18 appearances for the East London club. During the 2004-05 campaign he spent spells on loan at both Peterborough and Bristol City and he impressed during a three-month stint at Plymouth Argyle in 2005/06.
[3] Callum Davidson Position: Defender Nationality: Scottish Davidson joined Preston on a free transfer from Leicester City in July 2004. Born in Sterling, the Scottish left-back started his career with St Johnstone before moving south of the border to link up with Blackburn Rovers in a £1.75m deal. Davidson made 78 appearances in a two-year spell at Ewood Park before Peter Taylor moved to take him to Leicester City in the summer of 2000.
[25] Ross Wallace Position: Midfielder Nationality: Scottish It was seen as something of a coup when North End persuaded the Scottish winger to sign a four-andhalf-year deal in January 2009. Wallace was born in Dundee but began his football career at Celtic where he was mainly used as a leftback by Gordon Strachan. In the summer of 2006 he was persuaded to move south of the border to link up with one of his former team-mates, Roy Keane, who was in charge of Sunderland. North End made their move for Wallace in the summer of 2008, initially persuading him to join on loan before he signed a permanent deal mid-way through that loan period. 16 | PALACE vs PRESTON NORTH END

[23] Matthew James Position: Midfielder Nationality: English Matt James joined Preston North End on a season long loan from Manchester United in February. The 18-year-old is a versatile player who is primarily a central midfielder but has been known to play in a defensive role when called upon. After signing on loan for the Lilywhites, James went straight into Darren Ferguson’s starting XI against Sheffield United at Deepdale and the midfielder put in a man of the match performance as well as opening his goalscoring account for the Lilywhites just ten minutes into his debut.
[4] Richard Chaplow Position: Midfielder Nationality: English Richard Chaplow signed for Preston from West Bromwich Albion on in January 2008. The Accrington-born play maker made his name at local rivals Burnley having come through their scholarship scheme, and became an integral part of the Clarets’ midfield, netting seven times in 65 appearances. His tough-tackling and vision earned widespread plaudits and
eventually paved the way to a £1.5m move to West Brom in 2005. During his three year stay at The Hawthorns he appeared on 56 occasions.
[11] Darren Carter Position: Midfielder Nationality: English North End snapped up Carter in August 2007 on a four-year deal after West Brom agreed to part with the player for an initial fee of £750,000. A former England U20 international, Carter made his Football League bow as a 19-year old with Birmingham City, and within four months he went on to score the penalty against Norwich that clinched Brum’s promotion to the Premiership in the 2002 Play Off Final. After gaining further experience on loan at Sunderland during the 2004/05 season, he was later snapped up by the Baggies for a fee of £1.5m in the summer of 2005.
[26] Jon Parkin Position: Striker Nationality: English Jon ‘The Beast’ Parkin has fast become a cult hero at Deepdale since signing from Stoke City at the tail end of the summer transfer window in August 2008. Parkin started his career as a trainee with hometown club Barnsley, but his career took off at Macclesfield where he successfully converted from a defender to a striker. He scored 26 goals in the 2004/05 season and the following year was snapped up by Hull City. Parkin then moved on to Stoke City in the summer of 2007 and played a part in their Premiership promotion winning side.
[2] Michael Hart Position: Defender Nationality: Scottish Michael Hart joined Preston from Aberdeen just before deadline day of the January transfer window in 2008 for a fee in the region of £100,000 on
a three-and-a-half year deal. Hart finally made his debut for Preston North End in April 2008 against Ipswich Town, after incurring a hip injury which had delayed his first start for the club. Hart made his professional debut for Aberdeen in 1998. After moving on loan to Livingston in 2000, the defender’s move was made permanent in July 2001. Hart then returned to Aberdeen in 2003, where he then established himself in the side.
[9] Chris Brown Position: Striker Nationality: English Chris Brown was brought to Deepdale in January 2008 from Championship side Norwich City. He started his career with Sunderland - the club he supported as a boy - and spent time on loan with Doncaster and Hull while gaining experience. Twelve months before his Deepdale move, he departed the Stadium of Light for Carrow Road having scored nine goals in 66 appearances for the Mackens, joining the East Anglian club for a fee of £325,000. STARMAN
STARMAN: NEIL MELLOR A product of the Liverpool Academy, Mellor joined the Lilywhites in 2006 and, after an injury plagued first season at Deepdale, has established himself as a pivotal figure in the North End front line. In that ill fated first season he managed just five appearances and one goal, but he improved those figures in the next campaign with nine goals from 32 appearances and then notched ten goals from 35 appearances last year. This season though has has started more games than ever before (21) and is level with his career best return of ten goals with seven games still to go. The Liverpudlian began his career when he broke on to the professional scene in December 2002 in the League Cup fourth round against Ipswich, and then scored his first goal three games later in the next round. In the next season he joined West Ham on a season long loan, but he managed only two goals from 16 appearances and returned to his parent club two months early. It was in his next season though that he exploded into the public eye with a 30 yard volley against Arsenal and then an 81st minute strike against Olympiakos in the European Cup. Tragically in March 2005 he was ruled out for the remainder of the season when he required surgery on both knees. It meant he missed out on the chance of European success as Liverpool went on to lift their fifth European Cup. In January 2006 he joined Wigan Athletic on loan until the end of the season but managed only three appearances and one goal before signing a three year contract with Preston in the summer. 18 | PALACE vs PRESTON NORTH END

“That wasn’t good enough today - nowhere near. At 2-1 we lost all shape and discipline and it’s happened a couple of times now” Darren Ferguson Preston North End had to settle for a point against Queens Park Rangers after the visitors fought back from a two goal deficit at Deepdale. North End took the lead before half time courtesy of Billy Jones and then doubled their advantage in the 56th minute following Callum Davidson’s spot kick. However, two goals in quick succession for QPR by Peter Ramage and Tamas Priskin completed Rangers comeback, ensuring that the Hoops left Deepdale with a share of the spoils. The breakthrough was made for Preston in the 36th minute when Richard Chaplow whipped a corner in from the right hand side and Jones came steaming in to smash the ball into the roof of the net to open the scoring. The lead was doubled when Jon Parkin powered into the penalty area and was pulled down by Kaspars Gorkss. The referee had no hesitation
into pointing the spot and Davidson stepped up and rocketed his penalty into the top corner, leaving Karl Ikeme no chance. Davidson’s 56th minute penalty gave Preston a bit of breathing space but the Lilywhites were dealt a scare with the Hoops equalising just one minute after finding themselves two goals down. Taarabt, who had been QPR’s most dangerous and influential player spotted Ramage running into the penalty area unmarked and the full back got onto the end of Tarrabt’s pass and slotted the ball past Lonergan. This gave the visitors a massive lifeline straight after conceding from the penalty spot. QPR restored parity when Taarabt played the ball into Priskin who fired the ball past Lonergan from inside the penalty area. Last Time Out covers Preston’s home match against QPR on March 27th due to print deadlines. WWW.CPFC.CO.UK | 19

THIS SEASON I AM REFLECTING ON THOSE SEASONS FROM FORTY, THIRTY AND TWENTY YEARS AGO WHEN THE CLUB FIRST ATTAINED ITS PLACE IN THE FIRST DIVISION OF THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE AND THEN SUBSEQUENTLY TWICE RETURNED. by ian king
22 | PALACE vs PRESTON NORTH END
APRIL 1980 Thirty years ago it was also Eastertide and on this very date, 5th April, the Eagles were playing arch rivals Brighton on a Saturday afternoon at Selhurst Park. Still striving to find their early season form, John Burridge returned in goal following his injury but it was a clash skipper Jim Cannon probably still remembers. Early in the game the ball bounced on the edge of the Palace penalty area and Burridge elected to come off his line as Cannon headed the ball over his head to give the Seagulls’ Peter Ward a simple tap in goal. Worse still Burridge had landed his punch on Cannon’s mouth leaving Jim to mop away at his wound with a sponge for the next few minutes. Burridge redeemed himself later with a fine save while Cannon made a goal-line clearance from the sharp Ward. In the second half the Eagles were in a different mood and just before an hour’s play Jim found the net from a corner to level matters with his first goal for five months. As is usual with ‘derby’ clashes the game ended 1-1. Two days later, on Easter Monday, Palace travelled to Norwich City where Gerry Francis volleyed the Eagles into a tenth minute lead as Palace went on to dominate the game. On the half-hour mark Francis made a hash of a clearance in the penalty area handing Justin Fashanu an opportunity with the Canaries equalising goal. Palace’s confidence just sapped away after that so it was no surprise when Fashanu netted again in the fifty-seventh minute. Jerry Murphy and Mike Flanagan nearly saved the day as the Eagles’ winless run stretched to six games and Palace well entrenched in midtable.
APRIL 1970 The club’s final away fixture of the 1969-70 season was a daunting one to Anfield on the evening of Friday 3rd April with a minimum requirement of one point to put pressure on Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland below us in the relegation places. It was evident from the start that this was nigh impossible as Liverpool attacked
incessantly down the wings and opened the scoring via this avenue after only fifteen minutes. From then on it was really a question of how many but Palace, and goalkeeper John Jackson especially, somehow kept it to one by half-time. Any doubt in the outcome was dispelled in two minutes soon after the break as Liverpool added two more goals to win the game 3-0.
APRIL 1990 Four days before the F.A. Cup semi-final at Villa Park, Palace also happened to be fulfilling an away fixture at Norwich. It was a similar result to ten years earlier as manager Steve Coppell was unhappy with the lack of commitment from some of his players, possibly understandable in the circumstances. The Canaries established a two goal lead in the first half, and although Palace looked better after the break that would be the final score. The appearance of John Salako off the bench to play at left-back seemed strange at the time but Coppell had a plan for Sunday! Sunday 8th April 1990 will live long in the history of this club and also in the memories of those present at the game or watching the game on television, the first F.A. Cup semi-final to be shown live in its entirety. There are many reports and footage of the game so I shall give a personal account of the day from Euston Station aboard one of the special trains to Witton station where fans were escorted to the ground and one policeman observed that crowds for this fixture were usually in buoyant mood to which one Palace supporter ‘likened it to going to the gas chamber’. It sort of summed up the mood that Palace, still missing the injured Ian Wright, had little chance other than keeping the score down or wishing we had been paired with Oldham Athletic instead. That hardly changed as Liverpool went ahead in the fifteenth minute when an error allowed Ian Rush to be given an easy chance that he finished clinically. However on the half-hour mark Rush went off injured and with Liverpool’s only two substitutes being defenders perhaps there was a chance Palace’s passes now began to find their men and Salako was doing a fine job in a dual role of defender and attacker on the left hand side. At the start of the second half Liverpool made their second and final substitution and then from Palace’s kickoff John Pemberton surged down Palace’s right, crossed into the area, Salako’s shot hit Grobbelaar’s legs and Mark Bright lashed it home – all inside twenty seconds that changed the course of the game. Suddenly we all sensed that there could be an upset and the fans roared the Eagles on and in the seventieth minute Andy Gray’s free kick was headed down by Phil Barber and Gary O’Reilly rapped the ball home. Now it was a question of clock watching as it came to ten minutes left and disaster struck twice in three minutes as
After the following day’s results Sheffield Wednesday went bottom on 24 points with two left to play, Sunderland moved level with Palace on 25 points but below us on goal average, however they also had two to play, while our last game of the season would come on Monday 6th April. Then only two clubs were relegated and there was only two points for a win.
first McMahon equalised and then in one of the harshest decisions of the game a distraught John Pemberton was adjudged to have fouled substitute Steve Staunton in the penalty area for John Barnes to put the Reds in front 3-2 with seven minutes left. A rollercoaster of emotions in those forty minutes and left speechless that the inevitable had now arrived but again set pieces were Liverpool’s undoing. Andy Gray headed home from John Pemberton and just on the final whistle before extra time Andy Thorn headed against the bar. With John Barnes the only forward for Liverpool being thwarted by a fine save from Nigel Martyn, the team went in search of the winning goal that came naturally from a corner four minutes into the second period of extra time – this time it was Alan Pardew to secure hero status with a trademark Palace goal heading home Thorn’s near post flick on from a corner. At the final whistle you did not know where to look – veteran Palace fans seated nearby taking in all those years of support to the throng on the Holte End or the players out on the pitch where Ian Wright in a long brown coat joined them, but for Steve Coppell an early exit to the changing rooms. The journey home was a blur until the train passed through Wembley and a cheer went up as the Twin Towers went by. Arrival at Euston found the general public congratulating us as we came off the train to find our way home – I even get a lump in the throat writing this!

Forest went into the game knowing a victory would equal a club record of 12 straight home wins on the spin. Forest enjoyed the majority of posession in the early stages and Clint Hill cleared the danger from a cross by Radoslaw Majewski and just before the half hour mark Speroni saved a shot from distance by Robert Earnshaw. Palace’s first real chance at goal came from a free kick by Darren Ambrose, typical style from the winger as he drilled a shot right footed from 35 yards out and it had to be turned around the post by ‘keeper Lee Camp. The visitors came into the game more as the half reached its conclusion and a corner from Ambrose found Alan Lee but his header went straight to Camp for a comfortable save. A tremendous strike in added
time of the half separated the two sides at the break though as Wes Morgan’s right footed shot from 25 yards out gave Speroni no chance after he picked up a pass across the field by Anderson. Palace’s task became a lot harder early on in the second half when Matt Lawrence was dismissed for a deliberate handball. Palace were now for the second time in a week chasing a deficit with ten men. And Forest capitalised on the extra man advantage when they increased their advantage through Nathan Tyson. The substitute collected the ball from Anderson’s pass on the left hand side and took the ball past Speroni and from an acute angle slotted the ball into an empty net and go one step further to equalling the club’s impressive consecutive home victories record.

Crystal Palace fell to their third consecutive defeat at home after goals from Gabor Gyepes and Chris Burke gave Cardiff City a 2-1 win at Selhurst Park. Clint Hill had brought the scores level on 57 minutes with a header from a Darren Ambrose corner after Gyepes had opened the scoring on four minutes. But Burke won it for Cardiff with a brilliant strike from the edge of the box on 67 minutes. Despite the defeat Palace left the field to a standing ovation at the end of both halves thanks to their committed performance. It was a lapse in concentration in the fourth minute that gave Dave Jones’ side the perfect start when Steve McPhail flicked on a low Peter Whittingham corner to Gyepes, who did well to guide the ball into the bottom corner. The Eagles were denied two penalty decisions when first Stern John went down under a challenge in the box and then Darren Ambrose’s leg was blocked as he attempted to shoot. On both occasions referee Mr Boyeson waved them away, and in the first saw an infringement on the keeper by John as he tried to control the ball.
Clint Hill then hit the bar with a looping header from a corner, while Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall was well placed at the near post to save Darren Ambrose’s half volley from ten yards. Marshall could do nothing though about Ambrose’s next effort when he found himself stranded from a corner and the Palace midfielder looped a clever chip over his head that didn’t have enough dip on it and landed on the top of the net. Palace got the goal they deserved just before the hour mark. Ambrose floated a corner to the penalty spot and Hill managed to shrug off his marker and head the ball downwards and past Marshall from ten yards out. But Palace’s hard work was undone on 67 minutes when Mr Boyeson gave a harsh free kick against Neil Danns for hand ball. The ball struck his hand when Chopra hit it at him from four yards. From the resulting free kick the ball was headed down by Whittingham to Chris Burke, who did brilliantly to knock the ball into space with his chest on the edge of the box and then fire across Speroni into the bottom corner.

tern John is ready to brush off a troublesome year at Crystal Palace and fire the goals to secure the club’s position in the Championship next year. After overcoming that horrendous elbow injury on his home debut in August, he was then denied the chance to fight for his first team place in the Palace starting XI by being sent out on loan to Ipswich Town. It has been one of the mysteries of the season as to why, after being brought in as the answer to the club’s goalscoring problems, the decision was made to send him away to a Championship rival. But now though he has three starts* in a row and his first goal for the club on Tuesday night under his belt, and is ready to take his chance and become a key figure in the club’s fight for survival. “I have been patient and I have started to pick up some starts and I am relishing the opportunity now. “I was really pleased to get my first goal for the club last Tuesday and hopefully I can push on from that and continue to show the Crystal Palace fans what I can do.” His chance has certainly been a long time coming. The renascent Alan Lee has been more than worthy of his place in the starting XI with his consistent performances leading the front line, and with Palace favouring the one man up front approach for much of the season it is understandable that opportunities for Stern would be limited. But it still is quite a mystery as to why Stern found himself sent out of favour in the first place. “I don’t know. It was strange,” is his reply when confronted with this enigma. “When I first came here and spoke to him [Neil Warnock] he brought me here as the number 38 | PALACE vs PRESTON NORTH END
one striker, but then I had my injury and I fell out of favour. “When I came back I was fully fit and for some reason I just couldn’t get in the team. It was a frustrating situation but it is a part of football and you just have to keep your head and do what you have to do when you get your chance.” Under the new management Stern has been deployed in a more traditional 4-4-2 role alongside Calvin Andrew up front, and the Palace striker admitted that he benefits more from this formation than playing a lone striker’s role. “It suits me a lot better. I am not the type of player to play up front on my own, I like to play with a strike partner next to me especially where we are now. “We need to keep the ball sometimes, especially when we play one striker up front you need help.” Lee’s recent groin injury has paved the way for Stern to make an impact in the side, which raises the question as to whether he has mixed feelings over his place in the first team. On one hand he is playing first team football, but on the other he is in at the expense of a team mate’s misfortune. But he believes that circumstances like this are just a part of football. “That is football for you. You have just got to take your chances when they come to you - that is part of the game. “Obviously I am in because of an injury to Alan, but that is part of the game and I need to take my chance and do my best and keep the shirt.” Stern’s acceptance of what football can throw at a football player appears to have no prejudice. He understands that he is as vulnerable as any player to the fickleness of form, the randomness of injury and the tactical decisions of a manager.

“I have been in football long enough to know the game changes, so you just have to keep plugging away and now I am getting my chance I just have to do what I have to do,” is his response when asked whether Alan’s return will mean the end to his spell in the team. “To be fair, although I haven’t been playing I have been looking after myself. I am not one to go and sulk and not look after myself because when I get my chance I want to be ready. “I am 100% fit and raring to go and I am going to do what I have to do to stay in the Palace team and keep Palace up. “At the end of the day it is a team game, and although strikers are selfish it is a team game and we need everyone around us so everyone is important and I need to do my part and when the manager needs me to be there I am there.” Speaking to Stern he is one of the most relaxed characters you will meet in a football club dressing room; nothing seems to unnerve him. “We are professionals and we must be able to handle the pressure, that is what we get paid for,” is his response when asked whether, with five games to go, the threat of relegation is having an effect on the team. While there is no disagreeing with him, what these final five games mean to the club is nothing short of monumental, but Stern’s confidence is a little more understandable when he explains that he is drawing from past experiences. Before signing for Palace in the summer he had endured a similar fight for survival with Southampton where his goals played a major part in the club’s last minute escape from relegation. “I remember a couple of seasons ago when I was with Southampton. What we did was win most of our home games and we tried to nick points away from 42 | PALACE vs PRESTON NORTH END

home and we stayed up in the last game of the season. “We have to start making home the fortress. There were a lot of teams a couple of months ago that would not want to come to Crystal Palace and we have to get back to that.” One aspect of a tough home ground is the atmosphere and Stern was impressed with the level of support shown by Palace supporters during the Cardiff City match. Despite succumbing to a 2-1 defeat, the players left to a standing ovation at the end of both halves and he believes that sort of support plays a major part in the team’s performance. “The fans really got behind the team [against Cardiff) – I know they will get behind us no matter what - but even though we lost on Saturday they were still behind the team 100%. “As a player you look at that and you want to work harder for the fans because it means so much to them.” On a personal level, the end of the season marks the end of his current contract. Like a number of first team Palace players there is a degree of uncertainty about his future. But when posed with this he admitted that while it was natural that any professional uncertainty plays on the mind, his focus is fully on achieving the club’s position in the Championship next season. “As a player of course sometimes it is going to be in the back of your head because you have a family to support, but I think the most important thing is keeping Palace up and we will see what happens after that. “There are a lot of players out of contract at the end of the season, but we need to keep Palace in the Championship so we can worry about that after.” *This article was written prior to the Middlesbrough match on Saturday.

ACADEMY
DAVID MOSS Academy Manager I am writing these programme notes prior to leaving for Italy this evening with Academy players born in 95 (U14/U15) so when you read this at the Preston game we will be kicking off simultaneously against Juventus! I look forward to reporting to you our experiences when we return. I said in my Cardiff notes that you may see another Academy graduate making his debut and congratulations go to Wilfred Zaha for achieving this and coming on as a late substitute. Wilfred has been with the Academy since the age of 10 and has fantastic natural ability and self belief. He can create chances and goals for himself and others from situations you would not think possible due to his talents. With another unfortunate sending off in the Watford game I know there will be another young player waiting for the call from the manager to make his debut! I am sure everyone in the Academy will join me congratulating the 1st team on their excellent win at Watford which has certainly giving everyone a huge boost of confidence right through the Academy, from age groups 9-18 years, players, parents and staff. This with the preferred bidder status given to the 2010 consortium being announced this week has given all concerned the belief we are nearer to coming out of Administration.

Just over nine days ago we took on Birmingham at the Beckenham training ground in the Academy league and we managed to get a point against the west midlands side. Considering we had lost Charlie Mann, Alex Wynter, Wilfred Zaha, Jack Holland to the first team and John Williams was away with Wales we did well against a tough Birmingham side who did not show much ambition in the game at all. They were very hard to break down as they sat incredibly deep for the majority of the game. We nearly made a breakthrough in the first half when Jake Caprice had a shot terrifically saved by the keeper. Ibra Sekajja had a good one on one situation but was unable to find the net. In the second half we continued to be the better side when we hit the
bar through Caprice, Matt Parsons hit the post and again had one or two half-chances which could have seen us take the lead. Aaron Akura made the step up from the U16’s and did terrifically well, there was also a good display from Parsons at left back who appears to have hit a good bit of form and I thought Kieron Kenlock pushed on well down the right side. We nearly gave the game away though in the last five minutes, if truth be told, when Birmingham had two counter attacks but Ross Fitzsimmons did very well to stop both chances and overall it was a great performance. By the time you read these notes we would have already played our game against Norwch which took place on Good Friday. Hopefully we will have secured the three points to keep ourselves in contention of finishing runners up in the league, which will be a great way to reward all of the lads’ hard work this season.

RONNIE JEPSON Development Coach After the disappointing result against QPR the week before it was fantastic to see the boys rally and put in a brilliant performance against a strong Millwall side. Ahead of the game I had some selection issues because the first team needed some of the regular reserve players for first team training, so we brought in a few trialists to supplement their absences. Millwall lined up with a number of first team players and in the opening ten minutes they bullied us a bit and it took some time for us to settle. Fair play to Millwall because it was an open game and a physical game with some proper challenges going in. That added a different dimension to the match, but the lads did well in coping with the physicality and stuck to their task very well. Then, after going one down through a very good solo effort from Lewis Grabban, it was fantastic to see the boys respond and score a goal of the highest quality. At half time we regrouped and got back on the front foot early on and scored another good goal to take the win. It was a very good win considering that we had no players with extended first team experience. All of the players we fielded, apart from the trialists, were from the Academy and the fact that they managed to hold their own against some strong League One players is very encouraging indeed. This week we faced Brighton at home at the Beckenham Training Ground and I will look back at that result in the next match day programme.

Crystal Palace Reserves got back to winning ways in the Totesport.com Combination League with a 2-1 win against Millwall Reserves. In a behind closed doors match at the Beckenham Training Ground, Ibra Sekajja scored in either half to cancel out Lewis Grabban’s first half opener to win it for the Eagles. Reserve team manager, Ronnie Jepson was limited in his options for his team selection, and so brought in a number of trialists including goalkeeper Preston Edwards, centre half Rio Edwards and midfielders Nick McCoy, Joel Ledgister and Christopher Arthur. With the visitors fielding a number of experienced pros in their starting XI, the Eagles lined up in a 4-5-1 formation with Sekajja leading the front line on his own with Jack Randall and Arthur providing the support on the wings. McCoy, Ledgister and Joe Goldsmith took up position in the centre of midfield, while the back four included Jerry Nnamani, Michael Abnett and Matthew Parsons. Edwards was called into action within the opening minute when Ashley Grimes met a ball across the edge of the box with a first time
curling effort that dipped into the Palace keeper’s arms. Palace responded with a similar effort when Arthur picked the ball up 25 yards out, took a touch before striking a low drive that John Sullivan dealt with comfortably. Edwards was then forced into a fine save on 21 minutes when he was off his line quickly to smother Kieran Hughes-Mason’s effort after some nice interchanging football on the right wing had allowed the midfielder to get in behind Abnett. But he could do nothing about the opener ten minutes later when Grabban smashed a brilliant strike past him from 25 yards out. The former Crystal Palace midfielder picked the ball up 35 yards out on the left, carried it across

the pitch before striking the ball across Edwards and into the far corner. The scores were soon level though, and where Grabban’s was a goal of individual quality, Palace’s was thanks to some fantastic team play. Ledgister won the ball in his own half and played a quick ball up field to Sekajja, who flicked it on to an onrushing Randall on the right wing. Sekajja carried on his run and Randall managed to pick him out with an inch perfect cross that he finished expertly from six yards. Jimmy Rogers came close to restoring the lead for the visitors on 40 minutes when he fired just wide from 30 yards. In the second half Abnett tried his luck from 30 yards with a curling free kick, but the distance proved too far and Sullivan made the save; side stepping a couple of paces to
his right and taking the ball into his midriff. Millwall then put together a dangerous attacking move on 52 minutes when Grimes combined with Hughes-Mason on the edge of the box before firing low down to Edwards’ right, while Jimmy Rodgers also tested Edwards with a similar effort three minutes later. But Millwall then gave away a corner when Rogers had cleared over his own bar. Ledgister played it to the penalty spot, Nnamani knocked it down and Sekajja, with his back to goal, turned on a sixpence to fire into the roof of the net from eight yards. Millwall should have levelled the scores with 15 minutes to go when Grimes put Rogers into the box with a cushioned pass, but the midfielder fluffed his lines with a screwed shot well wide of the far post. Substitute Charlie Holness should have done better for Palace six minutes later when the ball dropped to him from a corner. Attempting to guide it to the top corner he got too much on it and played it well over the top of Sullivan’s goal, while Randall ignored calls for him to pass it on the edge of the box and shot straight into the keeper’s arms moments after. Palace were then denied what looked like a clear penalty decision when Sekajja was brought down in the area, but referee Mr Woolmer had a clear view of it and waved away the appeals. In the dying minutes Millwall could have grabbed a late equaliser when substitute Hassan Janneh managed to take the ball past Kieron Kenlock on the left, cut into the box and forced Edwards into a fine stop at his near post.

THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO CRACK A NUT (OR A JAW) AS NEWCASTLE STRIKER ANDY CARROLL PROVED THIS WEEK. UNLIKE WAYNE BRIDGE, WHO RETIRED FROM INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL AND SCALED THE MORAL HIGH GROUND, CARROLL SMACKED HIS LOVE-RIVAL IN THE MOUTH. HE MAY BE A THUG, BUT AT LEAST HE’S DECISIVE. Chris Dunlavy Mick McCarthy v Roy Keane In a nutshell: No-nonsense Yorkshireman takes on cold-eyed Irish psychopath. Why: Simmering mutual antipathy after Keane’s World Cup walk out in 2002.
Carroll’s spat with Steven Taylor was his THIRD training ground punchup following altercations with Shola Ameobi and ex-Toon winger Charles N’Zogbia. Still, Carroll is simply carrying on a long tradition of internecine strife. From John Hartson kicking Eyal Berkovic in the head to Craig Bellamy swinging a nine-iron at John Arne Riise, the pre-match dust-up is as much a part of the game as half an orange. But instead of covering it up, why don’t clubs just bow to the inevitable? Instead of a half-time penalty competition, let’s wheel a ring into the centre-circle and watch the two sworn enemies go at it. Just to get the ball rolling, we put the following fantasy match ups through our high-tech simulator.
With youth on his side and a fearsome reputation as a hardman, Keane is the hot favourite for this one. The crowd bristles with anticipation but, just as the bell is about to sound, Keane rips off his gloves. “These ropes, who tightened these?” he says in disgust. “They’re too loose. And this ring feels like it’s made of cardboard. I can’t work in these conditions. It’s a disgrace. Mick, you were a crap player and a you’re a crap boxer. I don’t need this fight. Shove it.” Winner: McCarthy
Nigel Clough v Billy Davies In a nutshell: Squeaky-clean Mr Nice Guy v football’s answer to Joe Peschi. Why: Twice involved in touchline bust-ups this season, there’s no love lost. With Clough the artisan and Davies the backstreet brawler, it’s a clash of styles to match Sugar Ray and Roberto Duran. Nigel ‘quiet man’ Clough works behind his jab while Billy goes for broke, swinging in overhands and showboating for the
LEFT: With a fearsome reputation as hardman Keane would be a hot favourite in any altercation.
crowd. There’s nothing in it for five rounds but as Davies turns to go back to his stool, Clough unveils his signature move, a devastating knee to the back of the legs that sends Davies sprawling. The ref steps in and it’s all over. Winner: Davies by disqualification.
Andy ‘One Punch’ Carroll v ‘Dangerous’ Joey Barton In a nutshell: Geordie nutter v Scouse madman. Why: It’s only a matter of time. Like Hagler-Hearns, this one is short and sweet. With fast hands, loose morals and devastating power, the pair go at it hammer and tongs for two rounds with both hitting the canvas at regular intervals. It looks as though we’re heading for a Rockystyle finale but all of a sudden there’s a blue light flashing outside. It’s the fuzz! And would you believe it – Andy’s breached his bail conditions and Joey’s triggered a suspended sentence. Before the ref can declare a winner, the pair are cuffed and marched off to the jailhouse. Winner: draw

CHAMPIONSHIP CHATTER
CHAMPIONSHIP CHATTER BARNSLEY Mark Robins has urged his players to cut out their naivety and end the season on a high. The Tykes have struggled over recent weeks and boss Robins said: “We beat Nottingham Forest who were third in the league, then we’ve lost a couple of games through naivety. We’ve got to get back to being solid and starting winning games.” BLACKPOOL Defender Ian Evatt reckons Pool will have to fight for their lives if they are to get anything from their remaining away fixtures. The Seasiders face Plymouth, Peterborough and Newcastle as they look to sneak into the top-six. He said: “They need every point and they will be scrapping for their lives so it makes it very difficult for us. We have to be prepared to fight too.” BRISTOL CITY Caretaker boss Keith Millen has four more games to impress and put himself in the frame for the vacant Robins job. City chairman Steve Lansdown said: “I want him to know he will be in charge at least until the Scunthorpe match (April 17) and by that time, we will have done all our talking and examination of any potential applicants.” CARDIFF Joe Ledley hopes today’s clash with bitter rivals Swansea isn’t the last time the two sides meet this season. The Bluebirds midfielder said: It would be great to be out there playing Swansea in the Championship play-offs. “Both clubs can make the play-offs and meet in the semifinals – or even the final at Wembley! Now that would be amazing.” COVENTRY Richard Wood admitted there were mixed emotions for him after denting his old club’s survival chances. The Sky Blues defender netted a late equaliser against Sheffield Wednesday last weekend. He said: “I think it was written before the game to be honest that I would score. Wednesday is my only other club so I only thought it was right not to celebrate.” 50 | PALACE vs PRESTON NORTH END

DERBY Robbie Savage says he has no sympathy for Chris Weale after his blunder handed the Rams all three points over East Midlands rivals Leicester last weekend. The Foxes goalkeeper allowed Andy King’s back-pass to roll under his foot and into the net and Derby midfielder Savage said: “If our keeper had done the same thing, I’m sure they would have had no sympathy for us”. DONCASTER Sean O’Driscoll was delighted for James Coppinger after the midfielder made up for missing the match against former club Newcastle by scoring the winner against Barnsley. The 29-year-old was forced to sit out Rovers’ 1-0 defeat against the Magpies through illness. O’Driscoll said: “He was disappointed to have missed the Newcastle game, being a former Newcastle boy, but he enjoyed his goal.” IPSWICH Chief Executive Simon Clegg insists the club are right behind manager Roy Keane. There were reports circulating that the Irishman was set to be sacked by the Tractor Boys. He said: “I’m still fully committed to Roy Keane. Although it has been a disappointing season I understand that Roy is still in the early stages of building his team and just starting out to get us where we want to be.” LEICESTER Craig Shakespeare has branded the Championship fixture list a “mockery.” On Tuesday night the Foxes began a sequence of eight games in 24 days and the assistant manager said: “It makes a mockery of the planning, when we have eight or nine games in a month and yet, in November, we had just three.” MIDDLESBROUGH Gordan Strachan admits his Boro side aren’t good enough to be in the play-offs at the moment. The Teesiders boss said: “We don’t deserve to be there just now. We haven’t done enough, we’re putting a lot of work in but we’re not doing enough to win games, to make enough chances to win games.”
CHAMPIONSHIP CHATTER
NEWCASTLE Magpies boss Chris Hughton is refusing to crack open the champagne just yet – despite being on the brink of a return to the Premier League. United could secure promotion today if they beat Peterborough and third-placed Nottingham Forest lose to Bristol City. He said: “We thoroughly deserve to be where we are but I’m not celebrating yet.” NOTTINGHAM FOREST Billy Davies has urged his players to learn from league leaders Newcastle the art of killing off matches. The Reds boss was speaking after his side’s 2-0 defeat against the North East club on Monday night. He said: “They know how to dig in and grind out performances and that is the learning curve we have to get ourselves on now.” PETERBOROUGH Gary Johnson has confirmed he has been in talks over becoming the new Posh manager. Current boss Jim Gannon is set to step down from the London Road club at the end of the season. Johnson said: “I have spoken to Peterborough director of football Barry Fry since leaving Bristol City. But I cannot comment any further.” PLYMOUTH The Pilgrims are planning to splash the cash on relaying the Home Park pitch this summer. The surface has struggled to cope with the winter weather and their home match against Barnsley in November caused controversy when it was abandoned after 60 minutes with the Tykes leading 4-1. PRESTON North End are not safe from relegation yet according Darren Ferguson. The Deepdale boss watched his side surrender a twogoal lead last weekend to draw 2-2 against QPR. He said: “That is four draws at home recently. We are definitely not safe yet – we have to be aware of that.” QPR Tamas Priskin has admitted he would be happy to turn his loan switch at Queens Park Rangers into a permanent deal. The Hungarian joined QPR from Champioship rivals Ipswich during the January transfer window and he is enjoying life at Loftus Road. “I’m really enjoying my time at QPR and delighted to be here,” Priskin told the Daily Star. “I want to score more goals for the team. READING Jobi McAnuff admits the Royals slim playoff hopes have been extinguished after
conceding a late equaliser against West Brom last Saturday. The Royals were leading until four minutes from time when Gabriel Tamas struck. McAnuff said: The play-offs have always been a bit of a stretch, we’ve been on a great run, but we need teams above us to really fold.” SCUNTHORPE Paul Hayes has shrugged off speculation linking him with a move to Norwich. The Iron striker, who is out of contract in the summer, said: “I still see my future as a Scunthorpe player. I’ve lived up here since I was 19 and I’ve got a wife and kids who are settled in this area.” SHEFFIELD UNITED Kevin Blackwell has warned his Blades side they risk putting their careers in jeopardy if they concede defeat in the battle for promotion. United have lost touch with the top-six over recent weeks and Blackwell said: “People here are playing for their futures now. There are a lot of the lads coming up to the end of their deals.” SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY Owls boss Alan Irvine has backed Lee Grant to put his costly error against Coventry behind him. The Wednesday goalkeeper failed to command his area and Richard Wood pounced to net the equaliser in last weekend’s 1-1 draw at the Ricoh Arena. Irvine said: “He’s a really good goalkeeper. We won’t expect him to make that kind of mistake for a while.” SWANSEA New Swans signing David Edgar insists there’s no need to fear a top-six slide. The Canadian, who joined on-loan from Burnley, said: “We’ve shown we’ve got the attacking ability with the chances we’ve created and it’s going to be a case of one goal and the rest will come. They are exciting times here and it’s good to be a part of it.” WATFORD The Hornets aren’t doing too well in the table this season – but one of their players is doing well on it. Midfielder Will Buckley has taken up table tennis and joked: “I’ve never played as a youngster – it’s just natural ability. I’ll play anyone in the club. I’m like Forrest Gump.” WBA Roberto Di Matteo has warned his side against complacency as the Baggies edge closer to a return to the Premier League. If results go their way Albion could be promoted on Easter Monday, but the Italian said: “We’re in a strong position, but there’s still a lot of hard work ahead of us.” WWW.CPFC.CO.UK | 51

SATURDAY 26TH SEPT 2009 COCA-COLA CHAMPIONSHIP WEST BROMWICH ALBION
Palace’s next match is against one of the relagated sides as they take the trip up the M40 to face Championship favourites West Brom. The Baggies gained many admirers in the Premiership for sticking to their passing game even though it brought them few points and saw them finish rock bottom and three points adrift of safety. Boss Tony Mowbray was drawn away to the bright lights of Glasgow Celtic, providing Roberto Di Matteo the opportunity to gain promotion from the Championship at the first attempt after narrowly losing promotion to the second tier with MK Dons the previous campaign. The close season signalled the Baggies’ intentions as they spent over £4m on prolific Swindon striker Simon
Cox, Colo Colo forward Gonzalo Jara, and defender Joe Mattock from Leicester. The side remain undefeated and are looking certain to be there or thereabouts at the end of the season. The Eagles have a poor recent record at the Hawthorns with just one win in the last nine games: a 3-2 victory in March 2007 when Lewis Grabban snatched a last minute winner. The previous match in the Black Country was a Premiership humdinger as Palace conceded in the last minute to go 2-1 down only to go straight up the other end and score an equaliser thanks to Aki Riihilahti.

It was just enough to edge the Surrey school past Beaumont Leys School. “That felt amazing” she said, still clutching the enormous winners trophy. “I can’t explain my feelings because it is so good, I am speechless”
Fittingly it was Beth Overton that provided the through ball for Georgia to latch onto and slip past the Beaumont goal keeper in the final moments of the first half. This week we catch up with Paddy McCarthy as he reflects on coming back into the team and how he is confident of the club beating the drop come May 2nd. Hi Paddy, thanks for taking the time to speak to the match-day programme ahead of today’s game. You played your first game for the club in five months last Saturday at home to Cardiff in the Championship, how did you find it? It was really tough having been out for such a long time but I enjoyed getting back out there with the rest of my team-mates. Unfortunately, we were unable to get the result that we all would have liked. Your inclusion in the starting XI came as a massive surprise to everyone when the team-sheets came in before the game. How much notice were you given by the management team that you would be playing? It was only the day before the game that I was asked by the gaffer how I felt. I knew that it was a ‘needs must’ situation for me to play with the injuries and suspensions. I did not really have an option really to play, I was the best of a bad bunch! In all truth it was probably best for me to get thrown in at the deep end and forget about everything and just get on with the game really. In terms of your fitness, how fit were you coming into that game? The shoulder was obviously still sore and in terms of match fitness I was lacking quite a bit as I had only played 60 minutes for the reserves a week prior to that, and had a reaction in my shoulder following the game. I will probably struggle with match fitness for a while but it is about a needs must situation at the moment and you have just got to get on, put up with a bit of pain and do your best for your team-mates and the club. One of the signs that showed your lack of match fitness was the cramp that you picked up in the last 20 minutes of the game, a reaction that 62 | PALACE vs PRESTON NORTH END
was probably inevitable after such a long time away. My left calf just locked up and your right it was probably to be expected. I have not played 90 minutes in over four months. It takes a lot of energy and fitness to play a competitive football match and if you are not fit it will show, especially in an intense game against a very good Championship side, but these things happen and I will be working in the coming weeks to improve my fitness and just get on with it. Whilst the result as you said was not what people would have liked, personally it must have been great to get back out onto the pitch and start doing the job you enjoy again? There were a lot of mixed emotions. On one hand you are happy to be back playing but on the other hand the only thing that counts is three points, not me, not how I am doing, whether I thought I played well or not, it is about getting results and the whole shine of the day, for me anyway, was taken off when we came off defeated. The manager commented after the game that you are a bunch of very hard working professionals and if you carry on performing like you have done,
Q+A: PADDY MCCARTHY
players and the supporters, everybody is pulling together in the same direction. The training has been bright and breezy and the gaffer has some really good ideas so everyone is working well together. I am confident that we will be able to string a few results together and get us out of the position we are in at the moment. Clint Hill grabbed a goal against Cardiff last Saturday and everyone across the pitch will need to start chipping in with a goal or two between now and the end of the season. Everybody is defending, everybody is attacking and we have all got to muck in where we can. Clint scored a good goal the other week from a corner but we conceded two disappointing goals. If you want to win football matches then you cannot afford to make those sort of mistakes. On another day we could have gone on and won the game, but we didn’t and we must look ahead to the next game and set about getting three points.
then you will get your rewards. The team spirit at this club is what you need when you find yourselves in the situation we are in at the moment. You look around the dressing room and there are players who are putting their bodies on the line, playing with injuries and still throwing themselves into every tackle, header or anything to help the team. We took a lot of confidence from the Cardiff game as we played well but just made some silly mistakes. We have got to cut them out and put the same effort into every game we play until the end of the season.
How hard is it to get over silly mistakes, especially when you know how precious the points are at the moment? These things happen in football, goals are scored and there are things you can say you should have done for every goal you concede but you cannot afford to let it affect you otherwise you will just go round in circles. You need to assess why it happened, what you should have done and remember that for next time, dwelling on anything never does anyone any good. You just have to pick yourself up and make sure your ready for the next game.
How have you seen the interaction between the new management and the players? Well the game against Cardiff was the first time I had been involved and I have been happy with the way things have been going. Everybody is fighting hard to stay up; coaching staff, managers, all of the staff at the ground,
One of the players who made his dĂŠbut in the game that saw your return was Wilfred Zaha, what have you made of him? He looked full of confidence when he came off of the bench which for such a young lad is great, hopefully he can play a part in our fight for survival as well. WWW.CPFC.CO.UK | 63

THOSE WERE THE DAYS
REMEMBER
WHEN… THIS SEASON ALEX WARNER IS TAKING A LOOK BACK AT THOSE GAMES FROM OVER THE YEARS AGAINST THE OPPONENTS VISITING SELHURST PARK FOR THE LATEST MATCH IN OUR CHAMPIONSHIP CAMPAIGN.
1979-2000, what a great era that was – a whole 21 years when we didn’t play Preston North End! That’s right, an époque came and went in which an entire generation were deprived the dubious delights of Palace v Preston encounters, the kind of stagnant matches that make you yearn for the snail-racing season to hurry up and arrive. The three encounters in just over a week (we drew one and lost two) in early 2006 and that awful 0-2 home loss under Alan Smith in March 2001 are my personal list of grey encounters, though there have been too many to mention. That encounter against David Moyes’ Preston on 3rd March 2001 was Palace’s third defeat in a row; three more on the bounce were to follow as we plummeted into the drop zone. David Healy smashed the ball past Kolinko after only eight minutes from 15 yards and Graham Alexander made it 2-0 from the spot after 23 minutes as Mark Rankine was felled by Steven Thomson. Until last March, Preston were the new Shrewsbury in terms of their curse over Palace. I was so spellbound by their evil spell over us that I went to the gym instead of our home game with North End last year. Whilst on a treadmill more tedious than our encounters with Preston, I saw our 2-1 scoreline appear on the television nearby and tried to convince myself that it was probably boring after all, whilst deep down wishing I’d 66 | PALACE vs PRESTON NORTH END
THOSE WERE THE DAYS
been present. Any shame felt at not bothering to go was deliberately masked by my belief that in staying away I was the catalyst for victory. Our win over Preston on 7th March 2009 was a complete surprise as we’d been winless at home since Boxing Day and had only enjoyed one victory in total. Neil Warnock’s supposed motivational skills appeared to have disappeared and Palace were in freefall. Poor Danny Butterfield had been shipped out on loan to Charlton, hopefully to inflict some double-agent activity (a la Pardew, Hudson and Dowie) that would send them to relegation, whilst Anthony Stokes was brought in alongside Shefki Kuqi up-front. Preston were in the play-off zone and started purposefully, though it took their first real incisive effort just before the half hour for them to take the lead. Claude Davis headed the ball loosely into midfield and Eddie Nolan ran down the left, crossing for Stephen Elliott who squared the ball to an on-rushing Billy Jones who, unmarked, shot home from 15 yards. Palace then stunned everyone by levelling within two minutes as Stokes arrowed a shot over Andy Lonergan off the left hand post. The foreboding clouds were instantly lifted and almost immediately, John Oster pegged it down the left, passing to Paul Ifill who despatched an immaculate cross for Neil Danns to slot home from only 10 yards. The second half saw us overcome a relentless barrage, though Preston’s possession came to nothing and the players left the field to rousing cheers, rather than the jeers that had greeted the final whistle in previous weeks. Suddenly, relegation talk was replaced with play-off discussions, though Neil Warnock was having none of it – “we don’t talk about stuff like that. We’ve got three away games coming up where we cover 1,200 miles in just a few days. If we win all of them, I’ll show my backside on Sheffield Town Hall steps”. There a greater sense of relief than when Palace lost our next game at Burnley. There have, of course, been blissful victories over Preston and
these invariably transpired in the 1970s – Mike Elwiss’ late goal as we came from behind to win 3-2 at Deepdale against his former club springs to mind, as was our enjoyable 3-2 victory on 3rd February 1974 which was the first ever Sunday game at Selhurst Park (something revolutionary at the time!) The photo from that game on these pages brings memories of a bygone era at Palace – the beautiful, vintage red and blue striped shirts with round badge in the middle and on the sleeves and Don Rogers evading two Preston players as Derek Possee (hidden), Roy Barry and a packed Whitehorse Lane end look on. Study the Whitehorse in
rancid our form, good old Preston would pitch up and keel over – never humiliatingly so, but always with decent, respectable grace – 0-1 or 1-2, 0-2 at a push, nothing too inglorious just pleasantly predictable. To cap it all, there would always be Dad or some other old-timer on the terrace who would remind starry-eyed innocent children like myself that this really was a victory as good as one over The Gunners, Real Madrid or indeed the Brazilian World Cup winning team of 1974 as once upon a time, whilst we muddled around purposelessly in the lower divisions, Preston ruled the universe. North End, I learned, once
all its glory, split into two sections – a marvellous architectural gift to mankind! Those were the days when segregation was as lax as the Palace back-four that season and though intended for away supporters, it was pretty much an Eagles end for games against Preston and other clubs situated some way away. North End tumbled down into Division 3 with us in 1974, though this at least enabled us to continue our sequence of victories over them. Our matches were full of jamboree back then and the inevitable Palace wins that would guarantee them to be marketed as Family Fun Days – rather than today – had the concept been invented. Kids could turn up and be seduced by a triumphant Palace and deluded into thinking they were watching Arsenal or Liverpool and it was like this every week. However
went a whole season undefeated in the league and F.A. Cup (1888/9 campaign), Tom Finney was the greatest sportsman of all time and you could leave your front door keys handing on string off the doorknob and still not get burgled. You catch my drift? Today being Family Fun Day, we need some escapism from the rigours of Palace v Preston of the noughties and a return to our fixtures of yesteryear, enjoy all of the fun of a bank holiday and remember kids give the boys much noise today.

Lyon are in pole position to reach Champions League semi-finals for the first time after they took a 3-1 first leg lead against Bordeaux in the allFrench quarter-final. Two potential superstars have emerged from Lyon’s ranks this season. Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who has already established himself as the French number one, made a string of vital saves against Bordeaux. Bosnian midfielder Miralem Pjanic is earning rave reviews for his performances and is now established as Lyon’s main playmaker, replacing Brazilian free-kick wizard Juninho Pernambcano, who left the club last summer. Jose Mourinho has increased speculation that he will leave Internazionale this summer after claiming that he does not like Italian football. ‘I am happy at Inter, but unhappy with Italian football,’ Mourinho said ahead of Inter’s Champions League game against CSKA Moscow. ‘I do not like it because it doesn’t like me.’ Mourinho hinted at a possible return to England, saying: ‘I miss English football and English football misses me, there’s no doubt about that, but right now I’m thinking only about Inter.’ Although Mourinho has been linked with possible moves to Liverpool and Man City, it is also strongly rumoured that he will move to Spain this summer. Real Madrid are likely to fire coach Manuel Pellegrini after their exit from the Champions League. Mourinho tops their wanted list, along with Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez and England boss Fabio Capello.
Another former Chelsea manager is doing well in Italy and giving Mourinho’s Inter a run for their money in a battle for the Serie A title. Last weekend, Claudio Ranieri’s Roma blew the Italian championship race wide open with a 2-1 victory over Inter. The victory took Roma ahead of AC Milan and into second place, one point behind leaders Inter. Roma are now unbeaten in 21 league games, a run which began with a 1-1 draw at Inter in November when Ranieri’s side were 14 points adrift of the leaders. Ranieri took charge of Roma last September after being sacked by Juventus.
Deportivo La Coruna defender Manuel Pablo has taken to driving a taxi in his spare time, following in the footsteps of his father. ‘You must never forget where you came from,’ said Manuel.
Former England manager Steve McClaren is on course to steer FC Twente to their first Dutch league title. Last weekend, Twente held one of their nearest challengers, PSV Eindhoven, to a 1-1 draw. Twente are four points clear of Ajax with five games remaining, with PSV a further point behind.

FATHER, FORGIVE THEM, FOR THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING.
FIRSTLY, MAY I WISH EVERYONE A HAPPY EASTER. EASTER IS ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT EVENTS OF THE CHRISTIAN CALENDAR, CELEBRATING THE DEATH AND SUBSEQUENT RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST Easter is a message of hope arising from hopelessness, and of new life springing up. Having committed no crime, Jesus found himself hated by the religious authorities of His day, who plotted to seize Him by stealth and kill Him. Despite having performed many miracles, healing sicknesses and raising many from the dead, He was found guilty of “blasphemy”, 78 | PALACE vs PRESTON NORTH END
declaring Himself to be the Son of God. Betrayed by His friend Judas, He was handed over to Pilate, the Roman governor. Despite mocking and intimidating Him, Pilate could find nothing in Him that deserved punishment. However, to appease the religious leaders, Jesus was handed over to be crucified, a slow, cruel and excruciatingly painful death reserved for criminals.
Nailed to a cross, he experienced abuse and mockery, even crying out “My God, why have you abandoned me?” Jesus eventually breathed His last and committed Himself to God saying “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Supernatural events occurred; the veil of the temple curtain was torn in two; the earth shook; rocks were split; tombs were opened, and many were raised to life. Jesus was buried in a tomb, and the authorities even gave orders for the grave to be secured and for guards to watch over it in case His disciples came and stole His body. Three days later, Jesus was raised to life by God, overcoming death to live forever. After being taken up to Heaven, He sent His Holy Spirit to dwell in the hearts of all who believe in Christ and trust Him to direct their lives. John 11;25; “You don’t have to wait for the End; I am, right now, Resurrection and Life. The one who believes in me, even though he or she dies, will live.” - Jesus of Nazareth Enjoy the game.
