GEORGE

BURLEY THE MANAGER GIVES HIS EXCLUSIVE COMMENTS AHEAD OF EACH HOME GAME ONLY IN THE OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME. PICTURE: Neil Everitt CRYSTAL PALACE v PORTSMOUTH

Firstly this evening I would like to welcome Steve Cotterill and all players and officials from Portsmouth Football Club for our first evening home game of the season. From when we came together as a group for pre-season it was clear to us all that there was a lot of work to do, but at the same time we laid out clear objectives for where this club wanted to be to achieve our aims for the club to move forward. The playing squad has undergone a huge turnover from the end of last season and I have been pleased to have been in a position to bring in a number of additions to the squad. Many of these have been loan signings, and with this it always takes some a little time to get to match fitness level as they haven’t been playing competitively and they also need time to get use to playing with their new team-mates. Due to the way results have gone, time is not something which we have a great deal of so you can be sure that a lot of work is being done at the training ground to ensure that fitness levels are at our expected demands sooner rather than later. You will have seen in games that the style of play we want as a WWW.CPFC.CO.UK

MANAGER’S COMMENTS_

YOU WILL HAVE SEEN IN GAMES THAT THE STYLE OF PLAY WE WANT AS A MANAGEMENT TEAM HAS BEEN TAKEN ON BOARD BY THE PLAYERS

management team has been taken on board by the players, but as always in football it is a results business and we need to take our chances when we are enjoying good spells of possession in games. Our last home game was against Ipswich Town and the outcome hinged on the one sending off incident, which was disappointing from our point of view. Overall I thought we were the better team for most of the game. I had no argument with the dismissal, we all make mistakes but I can’t condone what happened. If you lose that discipline, as far as the sending off and the penalty is concerned, against a team like Ipswich, with ten men, then you are going to struggle. In the two away league matches we have enjoyed a better slice of possession at both Scunthorpe and Reading but came away from both games with heavy defeats. In the first game we did okay in the early stages but then the game WWW.TWITTER.COM/OFFICIAL_CPFC

turned away from us when we lost our skipper Paddy McCarthy, who we had to pull off because of illness. We then gave Scunthorpe two goals before half-time with some sloppy defending. We never really looked like getting back into the game in the second half, and even though I was disappointed I couldn’t have had any complaints about the end result. In the last 25 minutes against Reading last Saturday we had the best chances, but after we went a goal down we never really dominated. Three-nil was a harsh scoreline from our point of view but I thought Reading’s first goal was a penalty, while the second was dubious as Julian Bennett had got the ball. Both sides tonight obviously know quite a bit about each other as we only played a couple of weeks ago in the Carling Cup at Fratton Park. This game was another where we played some great stuff and created numerous opportunities but conceded against the run of play at the start of the second half.

In the end we went out after a penalty shoot out but the biggest disappointment was the dismissal of Wilfried Zaha, which was a very harsh decision. We then lose him for three games, which was a blow for the team and the lad himself after he had started the season so well. Our attention now turns to these two home games in four days starting with a match tonight under floodlights, which always makes for a good atmosphere here, so get behind the boys and ensure your support plays a major role in the outcome this evening. Enjoy the game.

MIDDLE: Paddy McCarthy was substituted during the defeat at Scunthorpe.

CAPTAIN’S COMMENTS_

PADDY McCARTHY GIVES HIS LATEST COMMENTS DIRECT FROM THE DRESSING ROOM EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE MATCHDAY PROGRAMME.

CAPTAIN’S COMMENT Obviously the last couple of games have been hugely disappointing for us, and we know that it is a run that cannot go on for any longer. The fact that we have conceded six goals in two games without scoring one is something that needs to be addressed urgently, and we will be looking at tonight as an excellent chance to change things. One of the most frustrating things about the past few results is that we have played well; we have not been outplayed by teams, and in fact we have been the better team for much of the games. But the one thing that has undermined our performances is that we are not capitalising on them and killing off teams. Individual errors have also cost us at times, and they have put us under unnecessary pressure when we should really be dominating. On Saturday I thought that we were much the better team until that first goal, and then my individual error gave them a simple chance to take the lead. That seemed to rattle us a bit and Reading took the advantage, went on to score two more goals and killed us off. Of course we are still a relatively new side, but while there is the case to argue patience is key, we still have some top quality players in our dressing room that all know how to win games. That sort of quality does not go away, it is still there in every one of the players in our dressing room so I am confident that it will emerge soon enough and wins will start coming our way. Tonight we face a Portsmouth side who, like us, have not had the sort of start they would have hoped for, so it is going WWW.TWITTER.COM/OFFICIAL_CPFC

THAT SORT OF QUALITY DOES NOT GO AWAY, IT IS STILL THERE IN EVERY ONE OF THE PLAYERS IN OUR DRESSING ROOM be a big game for both teams. If you look at their squad on paper they have some fantastic players, but I think tonight will be more about us than them. It is going to be a tough game, they always are in this division, but we have shown that we are more than capable of matching them following our League Cup game at their place. But this time we have the home advantage. We now have the crowd behind us. And we now have the chance to make it count and get the win. The manager has brought in quality signings who have yet to experience a home game at Selhurst Park, and I know that they will thrive in the atmosphere that we walk out to every week. It is great to be coming back to Selhurst after so many away games. The atmosphere, the fans, the routine, these are things that you miss when you are on the road and it will be a welcome feeling when I lead the team out. Although, it must be said that those who have travelled with us over the past few weeks have been nothing short of astounding. At the Madejski on Saturday the noise coming from the Palace end was amazing. The singing never stopped, the chants and support continued right to the end and

it was fantastic to play with them doing their best to make it feel like a home game. I know that the lads really appreciate it both home and away, and as I said earlier the new boys that will be playing tonight will love every minute of playing infront of the Selhurst crowd. On a final note, the whole team was saddened this week at the news of the passing of Edgar’s father shortly before our trip to Reading. I would like to pass on all of our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

KAYLA THE EAGLE RETURNS Tonight we are unveiling Kayla the Eagle as the new official live club mascot. Kayla, who is kept at Eagle Heights Wildlife Park, made her debut for the club when West Brom visited Selhurst Park for the Eagles’ last home game of the 2009/10 season. Communications Officer Chris Poynton, who set up the link between the Kent based aviary and Crystal Palace, said: “Last season at the West Brom match Eagle handler Christopher Belsey was more than happy to come down to Selhurst Park with Kayla, and he was amazed at the atmosphere that was generated when Kayla proceeded to fly up and down the pitch as the players came out of the tunnel.

CRYSTAL PALACE v PORTSMOUTH

“After the reaction from the fans, the players and Christopher Belsey on the night I felt it would be nice to honour Kayla and make her the official live mascot”. Christopher Belsey has seen Kayla perform at hundreds of events, but none as prestigious as Selhurst Park. “As soon as we got the call from the club we were more than willing to come down to Selhurst Park and help the Eagles. We were delighted to see the club survive and look forward to coming down to this fixture tonight. “Kayla has performed hundreds of times, but standing out on the pitch was something quite special. The crowd really took to her and I could see that she was enjoying being out there because being

The precarious nature of football finances has once again been highlighted in recent weeks with the plight of our close neighbours Croydon Athletic. The fall-out from the Pakistan cricket betting scandal has hit the Rams hard and the future of the club is uncertain, after recent success had seen the club promoted to the Ryman Premier League. This was reinforced on “Non-League Day” on the 4th September when it was announced after

underneath all of the lights and the atmosphere was nothing that I had or Kayla had ever experienced before. “Kayla spends a lot of her days doing educational displays for the public and we have agreed with the club that when the times and dates are right we will come down to Selhurst Park for various games during the 2010/11 season.” Chief Executive Phil Alexander is delighted that the club has joined forces with Eagle Heights and is looking forward to seeing Kayla performing at Selhurst Park. “Kayla was at our last game of the season in April against West Brom and we received a lot of positive comments about her following the match. Since then Chris has been in contact with the Wildlife centre and we are looking forward to seeing Kayla at Selhurst Park on the 14th and at other times during the 2010/11 Championship campaign.”

The Ryman League has given Athletic some breathing space to sort its future out by allowing it to postpone league games against Tooting and Sutton but Kingstonian were awarded a bye in the FA Cup at Croydon’s expense. PHYSIO_

ALEX MANOS GIVES HIS LATEST COMMENTS DIRECT FROM THE TREATMENT ROOM FOR THE MATCHDAY PROGRAMME.

Welcome to tonight’s game, Focusing on the longer term injuries first, Sean Scannell is progressing very well and working outdoors on his running fitness and also some light ball work. He has been out for several weeks so still needs a couple of weeks improving his fitness and working on football specific drills before he can start training. Lee Hills continues to do well with his rehab and is running and also doing light ballwork. As you may know, Darren Ambrose picked up a knee injury in training the day before the Ipswich game. It was an impact injury and he has suffered bone bruising to his knee joint. These injuries can take several

weeks to settle down. He is now three weeks down the line and is working in the gym and regaining strength in the knee. We are hoping that he may be able to jog this week. David Wright also picked up a calf injury on the same day. He was progressing well but had a setback last week so we have had to slow his rehab down again. The only other casualty for tonight’s game is John Obika who has a small groin injury. We are hoping he will be available for the game against Burnley at the weekend. Enjoy the game Alex.

CALF STRAINS The calf is made up of two main muscles, the gastrocnemius and the soleus. In football it is usually the gastrocnemius which is injured as it is a fast twitch muscle used in explosive movements. These can be small injuries and take 1-2 weeks to settle or if more severe can take up to three months. They do not usually require surgery.

CLUB CRYSTAL PALACE v PORTSMOUTH

Alongside Leicester City, Portsmouth are still searching for their first win of the npower Championship season. Steve Cotterill’s side have so far been held to two draws and defeated three times in their opening five games, which has left them rooted to the bottom of the table with two points and a goal difference of minus five. It has most certainly not been the start Portsmouth fans would have hoped for in their first season back in the second tier since 2003, but then again set against a back drop of administration and threats of extinction it is a far sight better than the alternative. Ahead of the new season, WWW.CPFC.CO.UK

TONIGHT’S VISITORS_

LEFT: The Portsmouth players celebrate winning the penalty shootout against the Eagles last month.

Cotterill was faced with some monumental mountains to climb – he had just eight senior players registered, the league had enforced a registration embargo so he couldn’t bring anyone in, and he had just under two months before the start of the new campaign. Indeed the ramifications of such issues have seeped into the start of the season as he has yet had the players available to name a full compliment of substitutes in his squad. But despite all of the problems he has faced, Cotterill has remained upbeat about Portsmouth’s future: ‘There has been a lot of hard work by a lot of people behind the scenes, certainly before the international break when there were a lot of headaches and a lot of heartache. ‘Now in the last two weeks we have started to see a lot of daylight at the club and hopefully that carries on.” Off the field, matters do finally appear to be coming to a head as the club delivered fit and proper persons documentation and the sale and purchase agreement to the board of the football League, but omitted ‘vital documentation’ that meant they could not receive their golden share and officially declare themselves out of administration. The News reported over the weekend that the delay now offers 22-year old entrepeneur Tom Lever more time to put his bid together as a direct challenge to former owner Balram Chainrai’s bid.

STEVE COTTERILL Record as Manager of Portsmouth: P7 W1 D3 L3

Of all the managerial jobs in the Football League, there was probably none more daunting than that of Portsmouth’s when Avram Grant left it vacant in the summer for an immediate return to the Premier League. But despite the shadow of a High Court case that threatened the club’s very existence and a squad of just 15 players, there was one man out there who felt capable of taking it on. Steve Cotterill, fresh from his amazing 18-game promotion campaign with Notts County, accepted what many consider the poisoned chalice in football. Such is the confidence of the former Wimbledon and Bournemouth striker that he sensationally claimed shortly before the opening weekend of the season, in an interview with a national newspaper, that had he the players Portsmouth had the season before he would have saved them from relegation. That confidence is well founded though, having already enjoyed a considerable success in his managerial career so far. In his first job, in charge of Irish football club Sligo Rovers, he lead them to third place in the Premier Division of the League of Ireland and then into Europe, and then moved to Cheltenham Town where he took them from the Conference National to Division Two in three years; plus an FA Trophy win in 1998. A short stint at Stoke followed and then at Sunderland as assistant manager, before he took up the job at Burnley in 2004. After the Clarets he moved to League Two side Notts County in February last year. With 18 games to go before the end of the season, he went on to win his first four games in charge, eventually finishing with 14 wins from those 18 games to be crowned as Champions.

_TONIGHT’S VISITORS

[1] Jamie Ashdown Position: Goalkeeper Nationality: English

Ashdown joined Pompey from Reading in the summer of 2004 and has served as both first-choice and back-up stopper during his time on the south coast. He began his career with the Royals as a trainee, successfully making the step up in 2000 with a substitute’s appearance in a 5-0 defeat to Oldham. Over the following three years he accepted a series of loan deals at Ebbsfleet, Bournemouth and Rushden before signing for Pompey. He was released at the end of last season but Steve Cotterill brought him back after a successful trial. [8] Hayden Mullins Position: Midfielder Nationality: English

Mullins signed for Portsmouth from West Ham midway through the 2008/09 season after five-and-a-half years with the Hammers. A product of the Crystal Palace academy set-up, Mullins was given his professional break in 1998

and went on to clock up over 200 appearances in an Eagles shirt. [25] Ibrahima Sonko Position: Defender Nationality: Senegalese

A new addition to the Portsmouth squad, Ibrahima Sonko was drafted in by Steve Cotterill from Stoke City on a season long loan in the summer. The 6ft 3in defender has made Pompey his second temporary club since signing for the Potters in 2008 following a move to Hull city last season. He has managed just 14 league appearances for Stoke since joining from Reading, while his move to the KC Stadium last season similarly provided few first team chances and he left with just nine starts under his belt. He began his career with Brentford as a trainee and broke into the first team set up in 2002. He went on to make 80 league appearances before moving on to the Royals, where he enjoyed his best years to date with 122 league starts in four years.

[4] Aaron Mokoena Position: Defender Nationality: South African

The South Africa international, who skippered Bafana Bafana in the 2010 World Cup, began his professional career with Dutch giants Ajax in 1999. He moved to Belgium in 2001 in a loan move to K.F.C Germinal Beerschot, where he eventually spent two years and made over 40 appearances. His form lead to a move Belgian Pro League side Genk in 2003 where he spent two years before being signed by Blackburn Rovers in 2005. In four years at Ewood Park, Mokoena, who can play as a defensive midfielder or in defence, featured over 100 times until his contract with Rovers ran out in the summer of 2009 and Pompey picked him up on a free. [3] Carl Dickinson Position: Defender Nationality: English

Steve Cotterill added Dickinson to his squad on a season long loan from Stoke City this summer. The 24-year old has spent much of his early career accepting temporary moves to garner as much first team experience as possible. To date he has been loaned out to Blackpool, Leeds and Barnsley since making his debut for the Potters in December 2004. [11] Michael Brown Position: Midfielder Nationality: English

The combative midfielder joined Pompey in the summer of 2009 from Wigan Athletic after two years and 58 appearances for the Latics. Upon joining Portsmouth ahead of their final Premier League season, Brown arrived with plenty of top flight experience having featured CRYSTAL PALACE v PORTSMOUTH

for Tottenham, Fulham and then Wigan. Spurs were the first to give him his chance when they signed him from Sheffield United in 2004 for a reported fee of £400,000. The Blades had signed him permanently after he impressed on loan from his first club, Manchester City, in 1999. City brought him up through their academy ranks in 1994 and he went on to make just short of 100 league appearances for the club before accepting loan moves to Hartlepool, Portsmouth and then United. [5] Matt Ritchie Position: Midfielder Nationality: English

A product of the Portsmouth youth set up, Ritchie enjoyed a successful loan spell at Dagenham & Redbridge, during the 2008/09 season, and then Notts County and Swindon Town last season. He eventually made his Portsmouth debut in April last year in the Premier League fixture against Wigan, and has started this year

with three starts and three substitute appearances. [22] Richard Hughes Position: Midfielder Nationality: Scottish

The longest serving member of Portsmouth’s squad, Hughes arrived at Fratton Park from Bournemouth in the summer of 2002. He has made over 150 appearances for the Blues since making his debut, but has managed just two goals in that time. The Cherries picked Hughes up from the Arsenal academy in 1998 and he quickly settled in the side, making over 50 appearances in his first season. After four years on the south coast, he moved east to Portsmouth who signed him for a fee of £50,000. [17] John Utaka Position: Striker Nationality: Nigerian

The Nigeria international signed for Pompey in the summer of 2007 for a fee of £7million from French club Rennes. His move to England ended a five year spell in France, having signed for Lens in 2002 from Qatar side Al Sadd. He spent three years with the Ligue 1 side, making over 100 appearances and scoring 24 league goals. He then had similar success when he moved to Rennes in 2005, and scored 22 goals from 63 league appearances before he left in 2007. [10] David Nugent Position: Striker Nationality: English

The former England striker made his name with Preston North End where he scored 37 goals from 107 appearances. WWW.TWITTER.COM/OFFICIAL_CPFC

The Lilywhites signed him from Bury in 2005, where he had begun his career in 2002 and left with 18 goals to his name from 88 appearances. His form at Deepdale lead to a lucrative £6million move to Portsmouth in 2007, but after struggling to recreate his goalscoring form in the Premier League he accepted a loan move to Burnley ahead of last season. [24] Nadir Ciftci Position: Striker Nationality: Dutch

Ciftci was brought through the ranks at Portsmouth to make his professional debut for the club at the beginning of this season. He quickly got his goalscoring account underway when he scored the opener in Pompey’s League Cup first round tie against Stevenage, and then followed it up five days later with his first league goal in the 1-1 draw with Reading. ONE TO WATCH: DAVE KITSON

POSITION: Striker NATIONALITY: English GAMES: 1 GOALS: 0

After a difficult couple of years at Stoke City, Kitson is now looking at his recent move to Portsmouth as the chance to reignite his career. “I just want to play football again,” he said shortly after signing on at Fratton Park. “I’m happy to be at such a fantastic club. I’m excited to be here and it’s a fresh start.” The striker carved out a formidable reputation in the Championship while at Reading between 2004 and 2008. The Royals had signed him in December 2003 for £150,000 from Cambridge United, where he had spent two years, scored 40 goals and played over 100 games. Kitson repaid Steve Coppell’s faith in him with 22 goals in his second full season as the Royals finished the 2005/06 campaign as Champions. By the time his Reading career came to an end, he had scored 60 goals from 147 appearances which lead to the lucrative £5.5m move to the Potters in 2008. But he struggled to recreate that sort of potent form in front of goal for Stoke, and he managed just 40 appearances before having to seek first team football back at Reading and then at Middlesbrough in a succession of loan spells. With Tony Pulis looking more to Kenwyne Jones and Ricardo Fuller for his attacking threats this season, Kitson accepted the permanent move to Portsmouth and a step down a division to find his goalscoring form once again. Portsmouth were left still waiting for their first league win of the season after Ipswich held them to a goalless draw at Fratton Park. Pompey started brightly when David Nugent had a shot cleared off the line on three minutes after being found by a fine Nwankwo Kanu pass. Nugent went close for a second time on 16 minutes – again after being found by Kanu – crashing an angled effort against the crossbar. Pompey then missed a great chance to break the deadlock midway through the first half. Kitson took advantage of Tommy Smith’s slip to gain possession and send the ball into the box. Hayden Mullins, however, could not make a clean connection and scuffed his shot wide. In response, the visitors missed an absolute sitter when Darren O’Dea somehow cleared the crossbar from just a couple of yards out. Pompey were dealt a blow early in the second half when Aaron

Mokoena had to go off after landing awkwardly and had to be stretchered off. The Blues came close to taking the lead on 57 minutes. Kanu’s attempted pass was blocked but fell nicely for Michael Brown on the edge of the box. The midfielder launched a fierce drive towards goal but Fulop got down to his right to push the ball clear. The visitors were then inches away from taking the lead soon after when David Norris wriggled clear and crashed a shot against the post. Ipswich’s Hungarian keeper then made another decent stop on 74 minutes, this time to deny Lawrence. Ipswich almost stole all three points on 84 minutes with a goalline clearance by Ward needed to avert the danger. And Ashdown had to push Leadbitter’s drive against the post at the death to preserve a point for Pompey. CRYSTAL PALACE v PORTSMOUTH

FROM THE PRESS BOX_

FROM THE PRESS BOX

EACH WEEK WE SPEAK TO A MEMBER OF THE OPPOSITION’S LOCAL PRESS.

Neil Allen Chief sports writer Portsmouth News TODAY’S PREDICTION: 1-2

What have you made of the appointment of Steve Cotterill as the new Portsmouth manager? Well basically Steve

Cotterill has one of the toughest jobs in football without any question. He inherited a team with just eight senior players in the summer, along with 18 and 19 year olds without any first team experience. He has also had to contend with a registration embargo, so he couldn’t sign any players and of course the club are still struggling financially. What has been the general reaction to his appointment?

He has come in there and he has been honest, forthright, frank and spoken from the heart. A lot of people appreciate that because this club, for too long, has not been honest and open with supporters and he has tried to change that and tell it how it is. Sometimes it may not sound pleasant but it is the genuine, cold hearted truth and people want to know what is going on at the club. Has the slow start to this season been somewhat of a surprise?

Not at all considering what he inherited and the fact that they have not had any players. Nearly every game this season they have struggled to name more than four substitutes. The guys who have been on the bench have been teenagers without any first team experience, so people are realistic enough to know that Pompey aren’t going to

run away with the league this year; it is all about survival. What have you made of the recent stories linking 22-year old entrepreneur Tom Lever with a possible takeover? Well

obviously Pompey have been linked with so many owners in the past, and have had different owners who have not necessarily had the finances or the inclination to put money into the club that fans are going to be wary of anyone who has declared their interest before it is signed, sealed and delivered. We are still waiting for Tom Lever to deliver at the moment, and in the mean time it looks like Balram Chainrai will take over the club for a second time, so everything is still very much in the air. Another story that has come out recently is the news that the administrator, Andrew Andronikou, has agreed to lift the wage ceiling to accommodate new signings. Are there any concerns that the club could be falling into similar traps to those that put the club in the position it is now? Well the administrator

assured fans that these are exceptions to the rules, and it is understandable really. These two (Sonko & Dickinson) are quality performers who have come down from the Premier League, and Steve Cotterill has pulled off a tremendous coup to get them here in the first place.

BELOW: Ibrahima Sonko one of the players Steve Cotterill has managed to get on loan this season.

So if they need to break this wage limit then fair enough because they need it for this football team. And no Pompey fan would disagree that these two players will definitely add a lot of quality to the team. Who is the player to watch this season for Portsmouth?

Hayden Mullins is having a good season. He has been asked to play right back, which is not his position but he has done what has been required of him. He hasn’t moaned, he has rolled up his sleeves and given it everything, and he has done really well in what is a foreign position for him. He is the sort of player that this club needs at the moment because he gives his all and is up for the scrap. He has won over the fans as well after a tricky start and has become a key performer. What are the realistic expectations for Pompey this season? Well it is to stay in the

division. They had an awful preseason in terms of playing squad and numbers, and now they are trying to come back from that now and are playing catch up with a lot of teams that have the squads and full benches. So if they can stay up this season it will be a tremendous achievement for Steve Cotterill, who would obviously love them to challenge for promotion but being realistic that is not the case. If they can stay in the Championship then they deserve a lot of credit.

CRYSTAL PALACE v PORTSMOUTH

Tom Storey was handed his debut on the right wing in place of the injured Ben Bateman for the long trip to Plymouth Argyle on the afternoon of Wednesday 8th September, which turned out to be a good move as he netted the only goal of the game minutes into the second half. It appears that Palace had quite an easy game here with Jack Alderson in goal rarely troubled. Three days later Palace travelled to the east of the country to face Norwich City and found a much sterner test from the Canaries. They had to be alert during the first 45 minutes to keep them out while creating good chances of their own through Ted Smith and Jack Conner. It was more of the same in the second period, but ten minutes from time Palace won a corner and from the kick John Whibley headed home, the two points gained taking Palace from fifth to third in the Division Three table.

A long midweek visit to Darlington on 31st August produced Palace’s fourth successive League victory. A sublime lob from Johnny Byrne in the 15th minute gave Palace the advantage, while a good defensive performance ensured Vic Rouse’s first clean sheet of the season. Three days later right-back Ken Jones made his debut in place of the injured Roy Lunnis in the home fixture against Hartlepools United. For the first time that season Palace fell behind but a header from Johnny McNichol restored parity only for, seven minutes into the second half, Hartlepools to net again. Then, with five minutes left, Alan Woan flicked the ball in KEN JONES much to the relief of the near twenty thousand crowd. Ken joined Palace The top of the table clash between Palace from Wrexham in and second-placed Peterborough United the summer of 1960. brought a record League crowd of 36,478 to The right-back had represented Wales at Selhurst Park on the evening of Wednesday Youth level and only 7th September - it was the Posh’s first season injury had prevented in the Football League and they grabbed him gaining an Under-23 cap. the lead in the fourth minute. Town.

Forward Garry Thompson, who was still deputising for the missing Mark Bright, who had a hamstring strain, was on hand six minutes from half-time in the fixture at Selhurst Park against Sheffield United on 1st September 1990. He powered home a header following good work by John Humphrey and Glyn Hodges for the only goal of the game as Palace continued their unbeaten start with seven points from three games. It got better the following Saturday at Carrow Road with Thompson still partnering Ian Wright, and he had a hand in the first goal after only five minutes when his presence forced Norwich goalkeeper Bryan Gunn to drop a cross from John Salako that Phil Barber neatly slotted home. Seven minutes later Palace again took advantage of a mix up in the Canaries defence as razor sharp Wright doubled the tally. Nine minutes into the second half came the goal that wrapped up the points, and it was more clear-cut as John Salako latched onto a lofted clearance from Andy Thorn to sprint clear and score the third goal without reply. The win meant that the Eagles moved into second place in the Division One table, two points behind Liverpool. On Saturday 15th September Nottingham Forest were the visitors to SE25 and with Andy Gray suspended Rudi Hedman came in for his only League game of the season. There was a goal after only 80 seconds from the unlikely source of Richard Shaw, moved into midfield, who drilled home a low shot following a mazy run from Wright. Forest then took the lead midway through the second half with two ‘thunderbolts’ from Stuart Pearce, the first going through Nigel Martyn’s legs while the second, three minutes later, came from a stunning 30 yard free kick. However the Eagles’ ‘never say die’ attitude brought an equalising goal five minutes from time when, following a corner kick, skipper Geoff Thomas sent back a looping header over the Forest defence that dropped just under the crossbar.

GARRY THOMPSON

The much-travelled likeable Midlander forward joined Palace in March 1990, following Ian Wright’s second fracture of his leg, and he netted the only goal of the game on his debut against one of his former clubs Aston Villa. Ever present in the League to the end of that season he proved a more than able deputy to Wright as the club kept its new found place in Division One. At the start of the 1990-91 season he was this time standing in for the injured Mark Bright, but when our forward returned Garry then was either found on the bench or playing and coaching with the reserve team. An outing at centre-half followed when Eric Young missed a game and Garry was given a cameo appearance in our Zenith Data Systems Cup Final at Wembley in March 1991. That summer Garry moved on with all the best wishes from the club for work both on and off the pitch.

MY FIRST_

TEAM I SUPPORTED AS A BOY The first team

I supported as a kid was Southend. My dad took me to a game down there and I started to follow them. PAIR OF FOOTBALL BOOTS

The first pair of football boots were a pair of Panthers from Woolworths, always remember them. I don’t think they make them any more, thank God. I used to wear them in the garden with my brother, and at the time I thought they were the best thing since sliced bread. FIRST FOOTBALL MATCH

My dad took me to see Southend at Roots Hall when I was five. The Shrimpers were playing Millwall, and one of the first things I can remember about that game was the Millwall fans ripping up the seats. I think there was a bit of a pitch invasion and it all got a bit tasty. It was certainly an eye opener for my first game. I can’t remember the result but that was my first football match. BUY WITH FIRST WAGE PACKET

At the time I was down in Plymouth and as a first year pro I am pretty sure it was spent on some decent food to put in the fridge. Not very glamorous, maybe if I was at home I would have bought some other things, but at the time I needed to fill the fridge up. FIRST PROFESSIONAL GOAL It was actually for Plymouth on my full debut against Southend at Roots Hall, funny enough. It was about 20 minutes in to the game and I headed in from a corner after a flick on at the front post fell right in front of me and I put it into the bottom right corner. It was a really good memory for me as all my friends and family were there.

my

first Adam Barrett

FIRST TEAM My first team was a Sunday team called Fairfax Rangers which was in the Essex League. I have a lot of fond memories as it was great to have a kick-about with my mates and loved going to training acting out some of the moves of your heroes. FIRST IDOL My first idol had to be Paul Gascoigne. I grew up when he was in his prime, and in my opinion he was one of the best players in the world and he was on fire. At the time everyone wanted to be, or play like him so Gazza was my hero, but it is a shame to see how he is now. FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL I’ll be the first to admit I was not that fond of school. As a kid I was quite shy so it wasn’t something I really enjoyed, but obviously you have to do it and go along and I was a little bit nervous on the day.

After the midweek cup exploits for both teams it was back to league action and Palace manager George Burley gave three players their first league start. Edgar Davids and loanees Pablo Counago and Alex Marrow were all named in a line up which also welcomed back Claude Davis after his one match suspension. The Eagles carved out the first opportunity of the game as early as the second minute when Kieran Djilali was found by Nathaniel Clyne, and the lively winger beat his man but his shot went wide of the target. Palace enjoyed a lot of the game in the early stages with a lot of good football being played with the pick of the chances being Marrow shooting wide and Kieron

Cadogan seeing an effort blocked by a defender. Palace suffered a blow on 32 minutes when they lost their skipper, Paddy McCarthy to illness and his departure meant that Marrow dropped back to centre half and Jonathan Obika coming into a 4-4-2 up front with Counago. Further disappointment was soon to follow for Burley’s side as on 33 minutes Jonathan Forte picked up a throw from the right and shielded the ball from his man before turning the shot into the bottom corner of the net giving Speroni no chance in the Palace goal. Their advantage was increased in added time of the half as Forte collected a long ball forward and got a touch to move the ball on past his man and then shot low past Speroni

into the middle of the net. He was then instrumental in the Iron’s next chance, when his ball found Collins in the box but Davids got back just in time to clear the ball. Just before the hour mark of the game Palace had their best opportunity of the half when a Marrow free kick found Obika, but he headed over the bar. The win was rounded off for the Iron on 71 minutes when referee Dean Whitestone adjudged that Forte had been pushed in the box by Clyne. Michael O’Connor stepped up and gave Speroni no chance from the spot with a powerful effort into the top corner.

George Burley gave new loan signings Anthony Gardner and James Vaughan their first starts in a Palace shirt, as the Eagles returned to the npower Championship after the lengthy international break. Edgar Davids was absent from the starting line-up for the first time since signing due to the news of his father’s passing less than 24 hours before the game. The Eagles carved out the first chance of the game on 12 minutes when a deflected Neil Danns shot lead to a corner that fell to Paddy McCarthy, but from close range the skipper couldn’t keep his shot down. Reading’s best chance of the early exchanges finished with them hitting the woodwork, when Matt Mills connected with a Brian Howard corner, but the ball looped

over Speroni and onto the crossbar. But the home side made the breakthough moments later when McCarthy was adjudged to have fouled Shane Long in the box. Long picked himself up to take it and fired past Speroni down the centre of the goal. As they have done to date this season Palace played some good football going forward, and the perfect example of this was when Kieran Djilali, from the left hand side, found Garvan and his shot was turned round the post by Federici. During the break Burley made one change with Counago replacing Andy Dorman to boost Palace’s attacking options, and the Spaniard came close to restoring parity when he was inches wide from Vaughan’s cross.

However Reading doubled their advantage on 63 minutes thanks to another penalty. This time though it looked harsh on Julian Bennett who had seemingly made contact with the ball as he brought down Long inside the area. Ian Harte stepped up this time to take it and he confidently placed it past Speroni. Palace kept pushing to try and take something from the match, but chances were few and far between. Djilali put an effort over the bar and Gardner just failed to get his head to a Danns free kick from the left hand side of the field. In the end though, the win was rounded off in the final minute of the game when Jimmy Kebe picked the ball up in the box and converted with a left footed strike.

PALACE PLAYER is now available at:

WWW.CPFC.CO.UK It has been just over three weeks since our last home game and since then Palace Player has been working around the clock to bring you interviews and extended match highlights on the club’s official online-tv service. Last week our subscribers were able to watch exclusive interviews with onloan Tottenham striker Jon Obika, James Vaughan and Hull centre back Anthony Gardner. “I want to play as much as possible, score some goals and help Palace out. There are a lot of good players in this team and all I want to do is go out there and do my best if and when I am selected to do so.” Vaughan told Palace Player just after signing. A move for the player did not become apparent until the transfer window closed on the 31st August and it

was a deal that did not take a lot of time for the striker to agree to. “I heard that Palace were interested a few days ago and I was desperate to get out and play some games. It was a nobrainer for me. It is a good opportunity for me to test myself at a good level of football.” Gardner said similar things after finding himself out of the Hull set-up and spoke to Palace Player about how his loan move came about on transfer deadline day and how he sees the season unfolding. “I got a call quite late in the day from my agent saying that Crystal Palace were interested and it all happened very quickly which pleased me. The club has got a lot of new players in and it will take a bit of time for everyone to gel, but we will be going out and giving our best

each time we pull on the shirt. There are a lot of good players in this team.” Obika who is on a season long loan deal from Spurs also spoke to Palace Player about joining the club and his ambitions for the season. “It is great to have joined the club on loan and in an ideal world I would like to play and score in as many games as possible. For the fans who don’t know me I have got a lot of pace and hopefully that will allow me to find time and space to score and help the club up the Championship table.” For the price of a pint you could keep up to date with all the latest news, match-highlights, interviews and features on the club’s offical online television service. How do you introduce a man that has done everything? Having been a part of the infamous Ajax side that opitimised youth and style in the 90’s, Edgar Davids has seen, done and now re-washed the bought T-shirt to play for Crystal Palace. Today we learn why he elected to do so and how ‘the Pitbull’ can help the Eagles in the 2010/11 Championship campaign. WORDS:

1993/94 SEASON Davids helps Ajax to win the league three points clear of rivals Feyenoord.

uhammed Ali, Lance Armstrong, Pele, Michael Jordan and George Forman are just some of the notable athletes that I can remember, who have decided to retire, and then opt to return to their designated sport after a period of time out. For some of them their choice was financial, for others, like Edgar Davids it was a decision based on one thing, and one thing only. “The trigger for me deciding to come back was in part down with me training with Ajax in the summer and also speaking to the manager George Burley. He excited me about his plans and his philosophy of making football fun. “I want to have fun and that is why I decided to come back.” At the age of 37, Edgar Davids has a CV that screams of experience and quality. In 1991 the midfielder made his debut for Ajax aged just 18. During his period at the club he would help the Amsterdam club to three domestic Eredivisie titles. International success would soon follow in the form of a UEFA Cup winners medal in 1992, and

MAY 1993 Davids wins his first domestic trophy of his career winning the KNVB Cup. He scored the opening goal of the 6-2 final against SC Heerenveen.

SEPT 1991 Davids started his career at Ajax in 1991, making his debut in a 5–1 home win over RKC Waalwijk.

then three years later he would be part of a Champions League wining team. It was during this period that his manager Louis Van Gaal affectionately named the midfielder ‘The Pitbull’ in reference to his fierce style of play and bite in midfield. AC Milan would be Davids next port of call, and after one season with the ‘I Rossoneri’, Juventus would become his home for seven years winning three Serie A and Two Supercoppa Italiana titles. Stints at Barcelona, Inter Milan and Tottenham would also fill his domestic club CV as well as earning over 70 caps for his country, scoring six goals along the way. In 2007, he decided to return to the club that had enabled him to launch his career and play for Ajax in what would be his last season in the Dutch League. When asked what other reasons had spurred him on, not only to return to football after two years, but to do so with Crystal Palace, he replied with a great deal of thought and humility. “Why Palace? Two reasons - first, the history. When I was young I used to watch Ian Wright and Mark Bright on television, they always played well and that stuck with me. “And second, on my Twitter page there was a guy who talked about Palace and he asked ‘The club has a problem, can you help us out?’. I told my followers to support Palace and, after a couple of weeks, I got a tweet from him to say ‘We’re saved, thank you’.” He continued: “I had been training with Ajax, and it was going so well that a friend who also knows the Palace coach accelerated the process. I had been so caught up in my social activities - I have a brand, I am the director of a company and I have a foundation - that I was in the office

a lot and my focus was always on the next meeting. But sometimes you miss football and sub-consciously maybe I thought I didn’t belong in an office. “I already had a home in London, my heart lies in a big city, so it made sense for me to join a London club. I don’t know how many games I will play, but I want to have fun and enjoy myself. When looking at his career, it is hard not to look at his initial period at Ajax where he was part of a very special team that won the Champions League against AC Milan in 1995 . Out of the 11 players that started that final, seven of them had come through the club’s Academy system. Whilst the heights of European success have yet to come Crystal Palace’s way, the ethos is very much the same as Ajax in terms of promoting players to the first team from within. Over 19 players from the Academy have made their debuts for the club since the year 2000, but Davids knows more than most, that talent is only the beginning. “I see a lot of talent here but the important thing is is that talent has to be cultivated. “The main objective is to get rid of that stamp of being a talent and instead be labelled as a class player. “ With such a wealth of experience, it is only natural that young professionals and fellow players will look up to him, but Davids was quick to point out that it is not all about him. “If I can help to cultivate the young talent we have, and help them grow into the players they are capable of becoming, it will be worthwhile. “People may say that the some of the younger players will look up to me but I hope they will look at their other team-mates in the same way.

MAY 2002 JULY 2000 Davids is part of the 23 man squad at Euro 2000. The Netherlands are placed in a tough group consisting of World Cup winners France. The Dutch win the group with maximum points. The team reaches the semifinals, but are beaten by Italy on penalties.

JULY 1998 Davids is part of a strong Dutch team at France 98 and plays six out of seven games at the World Cup. His only goal at the tournament was a crucial one - a last minute winner against Yugoslavia to send the Netherlands into the Semi-final.

JAN 2004

JULY 2004 Davids appears in his third major tournament for his national side and started in every game.

Davids joins Barcelona on-loan from Juventus. Barcelona finish second in La Liga.

“It is important that it is a team, not an Edgar Davids Crystal Palace team.” When asked about whether he is expecting or hoping the club to get promoed this season the dread-locked star refused to put any pressure on a club whose very existence came within minutes of being ended in May. “For now I’m not thinking about promotion - let’s exploit the ability of these young players and see where it can take us”. Fratton Park would be the home for Davids first appearance in a Palace shirt on the 25th August against Portsmouth in the League Cup. Many fans, both Palace and Portsmouth were shocked to see him play so quickly after signing for the club and others were equally shocked to see him playing as a full back. “It was great to get out and play against Portsmouth. It was very exciting to play again at a decent level and it was nice to play with the boys. “Some people commented on where I was played but I can play left-back. I did so for various times at Ajax and with the national team. I can play in midfield or on the left or right wings. I’ll play where the team needs me.” It is that sort of professionalism and commitment that totally embodies someone who is willing to give their all for the cause and it became abundantly clear that he has a lot of respect for the Championship. “I love to be competitive and if you still have those energy levels and ability to play this kind of football rather than for just an amateur team, then I feel you should do it” “If you look at Serie A the league under it, Serie B, isn’t as strong as the Championship. It’s a very physical league and I am looking forward to competing in this division.”

BARNSLEY 3 Since our last home game we have had three fixtures, firstly a very good away win up at Leeds in which we won 1-0 and then two home defeats, one of which we were almighty unlucky not to get anything from. On Saturday we hosted Barnsley at home which ended with a disappointing 3-2 defeat. We took the lead with barely a minute played when Jon Williams swung in a wide free kick and Aaron Akuruka converted at the back post. If anything I felt we scored too early, and on the back of a fine away win the CRYSTAL PALACE v PORTSMOUTH

previous week I think the lads then took their foot of the gas and allowed Barnsley to get back into the game. We came into the break 1-1 and were quite disappointed with how we played I said some things to the lads to try and correct it. Ten minutes after the restart we conceded two goals, the first came from a penalty and then five minutes later Charlie Mann should have done better when he dropped an in swinging free kick and allowed the opposition to score. Ryan Innis grabbed one back in the last five minutes, and despite creating chances, we could not find another to get a draw.

PALACE 0 WATFORD 1 Seven days later we hosted Watford at home and narrowly lost one nil in what was a pleasing performance. We created a lot of chances and I think if you ask the lads they are bitterly disappointed about coming away from the game with nothing. Ibra Sekajja and Rhys Williamson were our two front-men for the match, and both of them had two or three chances each in the first half and will be disappointed they did not score. With a minute left until the break we suffered a sucker blow on the counter attack and they scored a minute before half-time. In the second half, Rhys Williamson had a good chance which the keeper did well to save. Kyle De Silva and Jake Caprice also had shots from distance which worked their keeper, but we could not find that elusive goal to get us level. By the time you read this we would have played Leicester City who did not lose a league game all last year. They have got a very good history and have always been at the top of their leagues and have won it a few times. Away from home they will be a tough test, but the lads are going to have thrive on that.

SUNDAY 5TH SEPTEMBER 2010 SOUTH EAST COMBINATION LEAGUE WHYTELEAFE

PALACE 1 MK DONS 8 Milton Keynes Dons Ladies came to Whyteleafe on the back of an empathic win the previous week against bottom of the table Ebbsfleet United, and were clearly in the mood to continue with another fine result. The visitors were 4-0 up inside 22 minutes thanks to a series of defensive errors, and one superb strike from 20 yards that Eagles keeper Abbie Yeoman could do little about. The Canaries added a fifth in first half stoppage time, with the sixth following straight after the break. With nothing left to play for in the game the Ladies started to make strides in keeping the damage to a minimum, and on 78 mins captain Kelly Newbound was brought down just inside the box following a charge on the Dons Goal. This resulted in the keeper receiving a yellow card and Newbound converting the spot kick with assurance. But it proved mere respite for the young Ladies as the Dons continued to press home the advantage, and a final three goals in three minutes left Palace 8 - 1 down with eight minutes left to play of normal time.

SUNDAY 29TH AUGUST 2010 SOUTH EAST COMBINATION LEAGUE PLANTATION PARK

NORWICH CITY 2 PALACE 2 Following the heavy defeat to Cambridge United the week before the Eagles were on the road again, this time away to the much-fancied Canaries. Following early exchanges between both teams, Sherelle Walters burst through and onto a mistake by the home keeper following a routine back pass, and coolly stroked the ball home into an empty net. Norwich pushed for the equaliser from the re-start, but the Palace defence all worked hard to keep the home team at bay, ably assisted by the experienced captain Kelly Newbound, and a returning Lisa Whitnall. However, a free kick awarded to the home team on 22 minutes brought the Canaries back on level terms. At first it looked too far out to cause any concern, but it struck the back of an unsuspecting fellow Norwich striker which deflected it past keeper Deehy. Ten minutes into the second half Norwich stole into the lead, and this would now be a test of the young Ladies resolve. On 58 minutes an inspired substitution by Palace to bring on Kimberley Morris for the tiring Whitnall proved the tonic and fresh impetus needed, and less than a minute later the Eagles were level courtesy of a fine strike by the ever running Walters for her second of the game.

FOOTBALL LEAGUE PAPER_

WHEN THE END OF SEASON GONGS ARE HANDED OUT NEXT SUMMER THE RECIPIENT OF ‘MANAGER OF THE YEAR’ WILL NO DOUBT BE SOMEONE WHO WILL BE PLACING SILVERWARE IN HIS CLUB’S TROPHY CABINET. AND FAIR ENOUGH. AFTER ALL, THE ULTIMATE GOAL IN FOOTBALL IS TO WIN.

NAME: NIGEL ADKINS TEAM: SCUNTHORPE RECORD: P: 198 W: 83 L: 71 D: 44

There is, of course, a caveat to that theory when clubs have a ‘win at all costs’ mentality and break the bank to do so, thus leaving themselves in a critical financial state. But what about those managers who don’t break the bank and contrive to over achieve working within their limitations? Isn’t it time that they received recognition for their efforts? So let’s sort out the contenders for our own best ‘points for pounds’ managers. NIGEL ADKINS

NAME: EDDIE HOWE TEAM: BOURMOUTH RECORD: P: 81 W: 41 L: 26 D: 14

NAME: KEITH HILL TEAM: ROCHDALE RECORD: P: 189 W: 85 L: 57 D: 47

Brian Laws may have been appointed Burnley manager last season after the board consulted Delloits and discovered he had the best record of success for money spent, but it is his successor at Scunthorpe Nigel Adkins who is our first nomination. Adkins stepped up from physio to manager at Glanford Park in 2006 and since then has seen the club relegated once

and promoted twice. In his four years in charge Adkins has seen a number of his star players sold for huge profits and yet the over achieving on the pitch continues. Andy Keogh, Billy Sharp, Martin Paterson have all departed in recent years, yet Scunthorpe are still a Championship club. This summer Gary Hooper – who averaged more than a goal every other game for The Iron – was sold to Celtic at a profit of more than £2m, so surely that makes them candidates for relegation. With Adkins in charge, don’t bet on it. EDDIE HOWE

Admirers of League One and Two over the last few years will find it difficult not to notice the brilliant job our next candidate, Eddie Howe, has done at Bournemouth. In his first season in charge of the South Coast club Howe kept Bournemouth in the Football League – despite starting the season with a

deficit of 17 points due to the club for failing to exit administration correctly. Up until this summer Howe was operating under a transfer embargo and for a lot of the games was unable to fill his bench with seven substitutes. Yet they still won promotion with games to spare. KEITH HILL

Keith Hill at Rochdale is another manager who deserves far more praise than he receives. Like Adkins, Hill has achieved success on a very small budget and seen some of his best players, like Adam Le Fondre, Will Buckley and Craig Dawson last week, all depart at a profit. HONOURABLE MENTIONS

Honourable mentions must also go to Paul Buckle at Torquay and John Coleman at Accrington Stanley. So when the rest of the footballing world are toasting the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Carlo Ancelotti and Arsene Wenger in May, spare a thought for these managers who will no doubt once again succeed on a fraction of the budget available to the Premier League elite. The Football League Paper is available from newsagents every Sunday CRYSTAL PALACE v PORTSMOUTH

CELEBRITY EAGLES_

EACH HOME GAME WE TAKE YOU TO THE WORLD OF TV, STAGE, RADIO OR BIG SCREEN TO MEET A PALACE FAN YOU WILL KNOW WELL!

CELEBRITY

EAGLES

Jo Brand Stand-up Comedian How did you come to support Palace? I moved up to London to work as a nurse and lived in Thornton Heath, and thus it began. First Palace Match? If you think someone of my age, stressed life, and mind like a pi**ed goldfish can remember that, you are completely mad. Most Memorable Match? For the wrong reasons a QPR away match when the crowd got lary and pushy and I was lifted off my feet, previously only achieved by a forklift. Favourite Palace Player of all time and why? Geoff Thomas, not only for being a stalwart but for having the energy to set up his charity and commit himself to it. One player you would like to sign for Palace, past or present? My niece Bex, who played for the England Women’s under 18 team for a bit. That’d put the cat among the pigeons.

where you sit at Selhurst and who with etc? I sprint to the ground, do some shoplifting at Sainsbury’s on the way and I normally sit on Phil Alexander’s lap! The funniest moment you can recall watching Palace? Someone weeing on my feet. Well, my friends laughed. Worst Palace moment? Being in Manchester to do a stand up gig during the FA Cup Final Replay in 1990. Having to leave a friend’s flat where I was watching it to do the gig and driving in the car past a house seeing Man U supporters celebrating.

Jo has just finished writing the second part of her autobiography ‘Can’t Stand Up For Sitting Down’ which is out on 29th September. The first part ‘Look Back In Hunger’ is available now.

What is your match-day routine - pre-match, WWW.TWITTER.COM/OFFICIAL_CPFC

Where did you watch the last game of the season against Sheffield Wednesday? I was at home but couldn’t bear to watch it on telly. Caved in and watched the last five minutes which seemed like 90. Favourite Palace goal you can remember? David Hopkins goal against Sheff United in the First Division play off.

EACH PROGRAMME WILL SEE OUR CORRESPONDENT TAKE A LOOK AROUND THE CHAMPIONSHIP SCENE AND BRING YOU THE LATEST FROM AROUND THE GROUNDS.

BRISTOL CITY

CRYSTAL PALACE v PORTSMOUTH

Bristol City have borrowed England Under-21 star Danny Rose for the rest of the season. The 20-year-old has only scored one Premier League goal for parent club Spurs in a three-year spell. But that was in a win against Arsenal, ensuring the left winger will remain a popular man when he returns. City boss Keith Millen was delighted to give him a taste of first team football. “We’ve been looking for a left-sider for a while now,” he said.

Not so long ago Jimmy Bullard was in the England squad but now he is stuck in limbo at Hull City. The Tigers have been desperate to get the former Fulham man, 31, off their wage bill for a while but no move materialised before last week’s transfer deadline. Now Tigers boss Nigel Pearson is finally considering giving the ex-West Ham trainee a game. “I’ve got a very open mind on it and we’ll see how the situation develops,” Pearson said. “He will be treated like any other player, the rules aren’t any different for anyone else in terms of team selection. I’m not going to make any kind of big deal out of it.”

AROUND THE GROUNDS_

Martyn Waghorn may have a strong north-east accent but he reckons he is back home after leaving Sunderland for Leicester. The forward spent last season on loan at the Walkers Stadium and was a big hit with 12 goals as the Foxes made the play-offs. “It feels like coming home,” he said after his £2million switch. “I had a great time here last season.”

Tonight’s visitors Portsmouth may not be as flush with the cash as they were a couple of seasons ago but there is still plenty of team spirit left at Fratton Park. New signing Liam Lawrence, who joined on loan from Stoke along with striker Dave Kitson, found that out when his new team-mates redecorated his car with pictures of flames. Boss Steve Cotterill said: “Liam has already found out there are quite a few jokers here. “He came in in a right little sporty number and the lads have stuck flames up the side of it and in the exhaust.”

Queens Park Rangers already look a decent bet for automatic promotion under ex-Eagles boss Neil Warnock. The Yorkshireman picked up the Championship’s manager of the month award for August after winning three and drawing one of their four matches. Adel Taarabt was a worthy winner of the player award having been unstoppable against Barnsley and Scunthorpe. Warnock has also made the mavaric Moroccan his captain and so far it is paying off in spades. Taarabt was a flop at Tottenham but the £1million Warnock was prepared to shell out for him in the summer already looks a bargain.

_FORWARD VIEW

DERBY COUNTY vs CRYSTAL PALACE SATURDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER 2010 NPOWER CHAMPIONSHIP

FORWARDVIEW STADIUM: Pride Park ADDRESS: Pride Park Stadium, Derby, DE24 8XL TEL: 0871 472 1884 EMAIL: derby.county@dcfc.co.uk GETTING THERE: By Road:- Pride Park is one of the Championship’s easiest grounds to get to. Leave the M1 at Junction 25 and it is signposted from the motorway.

It feels as though the season is only just starting after having had such a long break between games at Selhurst thanks to the international break and the fixture computer, but the plus side of such a wait is two games in SE25 in just five days! However after that it is straight back on to the road again with tough matches against Derby County and Cardiff City. At the time of writing Derby sit just a point above the Eagles in lower mid-table, having won just one match so far against Leeds on the opening day. Since then the Rams have struggled for form, crashing out in the first round of the Carling Cup at Crewe Alexandra as well as suffering league defeats at the hands of Sheffield United, Coventry, and Cardiff. Most gallingly of all, Nigel Clough’s team was on the verge of an excellent victory over QPR as they found themselves 2-0 up entering injury time, only to concede twice to goals from Patrick Agyemang and Jamie Mackie and end up with just a draw in front of nearly 26,000 frustrated fans. CRYSTAL PALACE v PORTSMOUTH

Clough has made no secret of his search for strikers and named James Vaughan and Matty Fryatt as names he was monitoring to see if he could get them in on loan. Neither has come to pass; instead he has managed to bring in former Eagles forward Shefki Kuqi on loan from Swansea. With 53 international caps to his name, the Finnish striker will be looking to impress his new side as he was surprisingly farmed out by the Swans in spite of their lack of forward options themselves. Recent matches between the Rams and the Eagles have not been high on goals though Derby have failed to beat Palace on the last five occasions, the last clash ending in a 1-1 draw at Pride Park in April with a crucial late Stern John strike sharing the spoils. As both sides look to kickstart their season, the match should prove to be a tight affair. By Chris Waters.

Parking:- There is not a great amount of parking available around the stadium so parking in the centre of town is advised. Although there is the cattle market car park. This costs £2, is about a 15-20 minute walk from the ground and is just off the A52. To get there, go past the normal turning for the stadium and go up to the ‘pentagon roundabout’. Take the first turning and take the next left. Drive about 300 yards back on yourself, passing it on your left as you drive along the A52. Train:- There are regular trains straight to Derby Station from London St. Pancras running at 25 minutes past (1h 44mins journey time) and five minutes to every hour (1h 31mins journey time). Neither journeys require a change. There are also regular trains from London Euston at three minutes past every hour, which has a journey time of 2hrs 2mins and requires changes at Rugby and then Tamworth. From The Station:- It is about a 15 minute walk from the train station to Pride Park but a simple journey nonetheless. From the station take the footbridge that leads directly to Pride Park Stadium.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF… We entertained the summer University Group from the Peckham Settlement for their preparation for Employment course. We delivered a ‘Day in the Life of a Professional Football Club’ Stadium Tour. They all thoroughly enjoyed their experience at Selhurst Park and said it was as good as the tours at Stamford Bridge and Upton Park-as they hadn’t been able to meet so many different careers at either of those two tours. If you want to experience a tour like this please do not hesitate to get in touch: office@crystalpalacefcstudycentre.org

CPFC COMMUNITY TRUST & TEXACO

This summer Crystal Palace FC Community Sports Trust benefited from the Texaco brand’s partnership and their grassroots football programmes. Two hundred and forty five children aged 5 – 12 years old from the south London area enhanced their football skills under the guidance of the Crystal Palace FC Community Sports Trust coaches. The youngsters who attended the event at Goals Soccer Centre, Beckenham North on the 23rd August, received an extra special treat. Crystal Palace players Lee Hills & Sean Scannell came along to the session. Sean, who progressed through the Crystal Palace FC system, enjoyed watching the afternoon skill session. He then took part in a question and answer session with Lee and the thirty-five youngsters. Sean said “Days like this are always fun to be involved in and it’s very rewarding passing on some of my knowledge and tips to these kids. I was very impressed by the standard. Let’s hope that some of them make it into Crystal Palace’s Academy in a few years time.” Commenting on the day at Beckenham, Community Director Colin Morris said: “These days are always a highlight for all the children, but today they were lucky to meet two of our players which hopefully will inspire them to greater things in the future and keep them concentrating on their football.” Stuart McBride, Brand Specialist at Chevron, owners of the Texaco brand, said “As an official partner to the npower Championship, the Texaco brand wants to ensure it is giving something back to grassroots football and days like these can only benefit the club and the children involved. We are delighted to be involved with Crystal Palace this summer.”

Behind the scenes with Palace Radio’s Commentators After many years doing live commentaries, DVD voiceovers, live outside broadcasts back to Selhurst and radio reports, I have had the privilege of providing match commentary for the excellent Palace radio for the last six seasons. I was on the TV gantry many years ago with Martin Tyler and he gave me two tips - always have a pencil to write down anything happening during the match, be it yellows, reds, time of goals etc. – pens can run out. Most importantly however do your researchwithout thorough preparation you will struggle big time. So in the days leading up to a match Soccerbase.com, club websites, the opposition pen pictures that are sent to the club are crucial. Previous performances have to be logged. Watching away games or TV games featuring future opposition gives a chance to see team patterns and standout players.

PHONE: 020 8653 5796 | TEXT: 07910 060 919 | EMAIL: studio@palaceradio.net Palace Radio is also available live on home matchdays on Palace Player.

palace radio On match day the club programme is essential reading for stats and any club info. A talk with the journos from the opposing club in the pressroom helps with their formations and of course pronunciations in this day of global players. We get the team about an hour or so beforehand and this can also spring some surprises as a new face is suddenly pitched in–it can mean a quick recourse to Darryl’s Blackberry to find out more. It is essential to know all about the substitutes as they could be pitched in at any time. Once the match starts it is all about painting the picture for listeners not only in the vicinity but also the many worldwide listeners on Palace Player stretching from Siberia to LA. They want as complete a match day experience as possible. We are lucky to have a TV monitor and the use of ‘slo-mos’. A quick talk in the pressroom at half-time to go over the major talking points and a listen to the palace radio half-time analysis sets up the second half.

You have to be prepared for anything and stay alert – the most uneventful match can within 30 seconds provide the most talked about incident of the season or a piece of history such as Butts’s hat-trick. All in all a case of being as positive as possible based on the soundest knowledge possible of what is going on out there on the pitch.

_INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW: Thomas Coupland

YOUNG MIDFIELDER ALEX MARROW TALKS ABOUT HIS DECISION TO JOIN PALACE ON LOAN AND HOW HE HAS FOUND THE CHAMPIONSHIP SO FAR. Alex, you have been with the club for a number of weeks now - how has it been? Are you fully settled in?

Yeah I think I am fully settled now both on the pitch and in training, which is good. I went up to Manchester while the internationals have been on, so I haven’t been down for too much recently but overall it has been good, and the lads here have been great. What have been your early impressions of the club?

It is a big club with a great support - when we played against Leicester at Selhurst Park it was a fantastic atmosphere. I have obviously not played at home since then but the staff here have been great and I have been working with good players, so I am really looking forward to it. Your introduction to the team was pretty swift, having signed on the Friday night and then in the squad for Saturday. Was that a benefit, do you think?

I think so; I got on and then trained again on Monday so I knew what it was about straight away and it was great to start playing games from the off. What were your thoughts when approached about the move to Crystal Palace?

I felt it was a good opportunity for myself. I was on loan last year at Oldham and thought I did alright when I played, so I thought this was a good step up for me, and I will be looking to do as good as I can. I am here to play games and do as much for the team as possible, so the more I play the better it is for me and hopefully we can start picking up points. CRYSTAL PALACE v PORTSMOUTH

INTERVIEW_

Since that short spell on the field against Ipswich, the team has been away from home. For those who haven’t had the chance yet to see you play, what sort of player would you say you are?

keeping yourself right when you are not in the team, as well as the importance of keeping going and never doubting yourself.

I would say that I am energetic, I love a tackle and always up for a battle really.

Obviously the opening day when I wasn’t here we got off to a good start, and then I think in the Portsmouth cup game everyone could see we played a lot better. We had a lot more chances but then they took the lead and we had a player sent off, but we held in there and played well. And then I would say in the last couple of games we kept the ball and had a lot more of the possession, it was just about putting the ball in the net. We had a good chance early on, we didn’t take it but that is football I suppose. I think once we get the first goal in games our passing will frustrate teams, and I think that is when we will open them up. When that comes it will all come together.

In the Championship fixture at Scunthorpe you showed your versatility by filling in at centre half for Paddy McCarthy. Is it a position you are familiar with?

I played it for 45 minutes preseason, but apart from that it has been a good few months since I played centre half. I would rather have played it a bit in training first, but obviously no one knows what is going to happen in football, so I went back there. But wherever the gaffer wants me to play, I’ll play. What have you made of Championship football so far?

It has been good. I think we keep the ball really well and we are one of the better teams at keeping the ball so I think we could definitely be up there. The pace is a bit quicker than League One, not as many tackles and more interceptions on the ball, but I am getting used to it. Do you think playing on loan at Oldham last year prepared you well for life in the Championship?

In the first half of the season I was playing a lot and I learned a lot on the field. But when the manager was not playing me, that helped me more to understand the other side of the game WWW.TWITTER.COM/OFFICIAL_CPFC

What are your thoughts on our start to the season?

So do you think patience is the key for this new Crystal Palace side?

Definitely. We have just brought two strikers in, Pablo and Vaughny so I think give them a chance and they will start scoring; Jon Obika as well. I think give them all time and we will start scoring and everything will be much better. Finally, how have you found the transition of coming from the north to the south?

I have found it alright, just getting used to the tubes, which I have never been on before!

_VIEW FROM THE UPPER

Alex Warner OUR POPULAR C O N T R I BU TO R WRITES HIS LATEST VIEWS ON PALACE DIRECT FROM HIS SEAT IN THE UPPER TIER OF THE HOLMESDALE ROAD STAND. This is going to take time. No one said it would be easy coming straight off the back of administration and having to piece together a team at such short notice and although many of us, understandably, want to move away from the “well at least we’ve a team to support and who cares about the results” mentality, we do need to be realistic. The same goes for Pompey too, in many respects. Remember that last time round when we exited administration, we survived relegation by the skin of our teeth. We must be patient. A comparison can, perhaps, be made with those autumnal months of 1995/6 when under the shadows of the brand new Holmesdale Stand, our new continental style coaching triumvirate of messrs Lewington, Nicholas and Coppell introduced a sophisticated passing style of football in a team full of new faces – it was a surreal period sitting upstairs in those inaugural months of the new Holmesdale watching a collection of strangers get to know each other both in the stand and on the pitch and home game after home game was played out with graceful intent by the collection of individuals wearing red and blue, but with little end result – our style overwhelmed by the cut throat direct play of opponents who’d spent many months playing and practicing together as a team. Never forget that it took till New Year for us to settle down and gel, but then there was no stopping us as we almost claimed an automatic promotion place and were eventually only thwarted by a last minute 30-yard shin. Supa’ Al entered Palace folklore with his unforgettable goal against Liverpool at Villa Park in the 1990 F.A. Cup run.

For our last home game, I commented on the departure of two managers rather prematurely already this season – one being our wonderful Steve Coppell, the other Kevin Blackwell. Hopefully, this won’t become a theme, though one of the most bizarre exits since Ipswich’s visit to Selhurst has involved another Eagles hero and Coppell protégé – Alan Pardew. Once again, it appears sheer folly to allow a manager to preside over pre-season preparations and then lose patience so soon – especially after a 4-0 victory! Few managers, though, polarise opinions more than Supa’ Al and this has been evident in the aftermath of his departure – “there’s only one Alan Pardew” sung Saints fans in their second home defeat in a matter of days since he was dismissed, though stories emanate from Southampton that morale was rock bottom in the dressing room and more widely so within the Club where he, allegedly, was only interested in first team affairs. Popular with the Saints faithful, before that he was admired as a player at Charlton, though never entirely forgiven for his Palace connections, however, when he put on the red and blue shirt he certainly, in those early days, polarised opinion until such time as he was lovably embraced for his commitment, in a team that was in the ascendancy. I have an abiding memory of an almighty surge that took me from the back row to the front fence of the Arthur Wait Enclosure in minutes in a frenzied “Al, Al, Supa’ Al….” chant just seconds before the Ian Wright goal in 1989 against Birmingham that sparked a pitch invasion and riot by visiting fans. Such adoration was almost a year even before he really did enter Palace folklore with that unforgettable goal at Villa Park! Good luck Alan – we’ll always love you. Gareth Southgate, Steve Coppell, Iain Dowie, Chris Coleman, Alan Pardew – there’s a host of former managers and Palace heroes out of work currently - it must be some kind of a record. Ironic, though, that one chap who wasn’t seen as a hero during his time at Palace, or associated with success, is enjoying amazing fortune as a manager currently. Mark Goldberg – a decent, likeable chap, in my view, despite what happened in SE25 – has, at the time of writing before last weekend, led Bromley to seven straight wins since the start of the season! In his first spell at Bromley, Goldberg achieved promotion from the Ryman Premier – as well as several decent F.A. Cup runs - and with Bromley four points clear at the top, don’t rule out him getting them into the Conference – alien territory for the Hayes Lane outfit. As a casual Bromley fan since the early 1980s, I confess to having more than a passing interest here, though there is also the added dimension in that our very own 19 year old Wesley Foderingham is currently on-loan for two months keeping goal for the Lillywhites and gaining valuable match practice. Let’s hope Goldberg isn’t talking about a “5-Year Plan” at Bromley, as he did with his infamous ‘Plan’ to achieve European football at Selhurst in half a decade. This brings me onto my gripe of the summer. When Goldberg unveiled his vision in 1998, a “Plan” - akin to that found in normal business - was unfamiliar territory in football, but today, irritatingly, “project” instead of “plan” is the buzzword. Perusing football magazines whilst on holiday, I noted that pre-season interviews with players, managers, chairman, kit-man, box office staff etc, all made excited references to their Club embarking on a “project” to win matches and trophies. My understanding of “a project” is something which has a defined outcome (which invariably gets forgotten and is seldom properly completed anyway) and is policed by the bloke in the office who sits behind his computer all day and gets aroused by gant charts, milestones, highlight reports and baselines. In football, getting three points on a Saturday is the day-job, not some project like restoring popcorn to the Selhurst snack bars for the first time since the fantastic F.A. Cup run season in 1989/90, or building the Bowling Alley in the bowels of the Holmesdale as planned all those years ago. The world’s gone mad. Enjoy the game, Alex. WWW.TWITTER.COM/OFFICIAL_CPFC

ITALY

S. AMERICA Over in South America, Argentina surprisingly beat world champions Spain 4-1 in a friendly. Lionel Messi was on target for Argentina, who recalled Esteban Cambiasso and Javier Zanetti following their omission from the World Cup squad. However, the scoreline flattered Argentina. Spain hit the woodwork three times, while Argentina’s third goal came as a direct result of a fluffed clearance by Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina.

GERMANY There’s no doubt about the most exciting front line in European football this season. AC Milan’s deadline-day signing of Robinho and Zlatan Ibrahimovic means they could field a three-man attack featuring Robinho, Ibrahimovic and Ronaldinho, with Alexander Pato and Filippo Inzaghi on the bench. Milan have taken Ibrahimovic on loan from Barcelona until the end of the season, when they will have the option to buy the Swede for 24 million euros (£19.5m). Barcelona have taken a huge hit on a player who cost them almost 70 million euros (50 million euros plus the 20m-rated Samuel Eto’o) in the summer of 2009. One respected football finance expert has estimated that the Ibrahimovic/Eto’o could cost the club as much as 130 million euros in fees, wages and bonuses. Across town in Milan, European champions Internazionale have denied newspaper reports in Italy that they could sign Kaka on loan from Real Madrid. Kaka, who joined Madrid last year in a £57million deal from AC Milan, is currently recovering from a serious knee injury. His place in the Real Madrid starting line-up has been taken by new signing Mesut Ozil, one of the stars of Germany’s World Cup campaign. ‘It could be a good idea but it hasn’t come from us,’ said Inter president Massimo Moratti, who added: ‘I’ve never had any contact with Mourinho.’

Germany was the place to be on transfer deadline day. Schalke signed Dutch international striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar from Milan for a fee of around 13 million euros, while Brazilian midfielder Diego left Juventus for Steve MacLaren’s Wolfsburg.

PORTUGAL Carlos Queiroz has paid the price for Portugal’s miserable start to their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign when he was sacked as Portugal national coach last week. Portugal began their European qualifying campaign with a remarkable 4-4 draw at home to Cyprus and then four days later lost 1-0 to Norway in Oslo.

FRANCE Elsewhere on the European qualifying front, the pressure on new France coach Laurent Blanc has eased after his side’s 2-0 win in Bosnia. But Blanc admitted that he faces an uphill struggle in his attempts to revive France. ‘It could take months, or we might never even get there,’ he said. A new-look Italy, featuring the outstanding Antonio Cassano, thrashed the Faroe Islands 6-0. Before the game, Faroes coach Brian Kerr, the former Republic of Ireland boss, had complained about the training facilities in Italy. ‘The grass on our training pitch is so high that all the sheep in the Faroes would take a month to eat it,’ Kerr said. _REVELATIONS

BELOW: Pompey have the unusual distinction of holding the FA Cup for the longest uninterrupted period of time, having beaten favourites Wolves 4-1 in 1939.

CLUB CHAPLAIN CHRIS ROE HAS THE FINAL WORD IN THIS EDITION AS HE GIVES HIS THOUGHTS ON A SUBJECT FROM THE WORLD OF FOOTBALL.

Tonight we welcome Portsmouth to Selhurst Park, who, like ourselves, were placed into administration last season, resulting in testing times for all at the club. Despite relegation from the Premier League, Pompey defied all the odds to reach the FA Cup Final, losing 1-0 to double-winners Chelsea. Pompey have the unusual distinction of holding the FA Cup for the longest uninterrupted period of time, having beaten favourites Wolves 4-1in 1939.

League football was suspended during the years of World War 2, resuming again in the 1945/46 season. Portsmouth fans are distinguishable by their “Pompey chimes” chant, which has it’s origins in the Royal Artillery, the area’s most popular football team during the 1890s. The nearby clock would strike every quarter hour, and as the matches were due to finish, the fans would join in with the clock to

encourage the referee to blow up for full-time! When the Artillery folded, most of the supporters transferred their allegiance to the newly formed Portsmouth FC, taking the Pompey chimes with them. Sympathies must also go to our non-league neighbours Croydon Athletic, who once again find themselves embroiled in alleged impropriety. Long-suffering supporters are, as usual, innocent and powerless bystanders as the inevitable fall-out begins. Palace fans can surely empathise as yet another club faces the agonising possibility of going out of business. I was at the last home game where, after the match, the management and players tearfully announced their decision to leave the club, made all the more regrettable after their impressive promotion last season. And finally, on a lighter note, here’s a quote from Harry Redknapp when he was Portsmouth manager, in response to a question from a TV reporter: “Where are we in relation to Europe? Not far from Dover” Enjoy the game. Chris Roe, Club Chaplain.
