A Vote of thAnks!

aelred.doyle@cpitrademedia.com

The month gone by has been a very significant one in the 96 months that CMME has been published so far. October 2019 was the month when we took a big plunge into playing a more active and direct role in the industry of which we have come to be regarded as the journal of record. I’m delighted to report that our first industry event, the Access & Handling Summit, was a success! The event saw a congregation of the ‘who’s-who’ in the regional access and work-at-height industry to share knowledge, discuss best practices, highlight new technology and generally share experiences in a sector that we at CMME think is vitally important to the Middle East’s project landscape. As we are all aware, the present is not the best of times from a market perspective, especially in our region. We think this scenario makes it all the more necessary for the construction equipment sector to come together on a platform such as the one that the Access & Handling Summit sought to provide, to share knowledge, to reach out to all stakeholders in the sector, to speak in one voice. To talk about new technologies, new machines, new ways of working, of sharing and adopting from other regions the best practices that benefit us here. To talk about safety and how that can improve efficiency… in other words to come together and shift the paradigm, however slightly, towards improvement. At CMME, we believe in the resilience of this market. We are still investing in our products and backing ourselves to deliver quality and make a difference to the sector. We launched this event now, because we think this is the time to work closer together. In fact, this event is testimony to our belief that our region continues to have enormous potential, and so do we at CMME.

TOM BROMLEY

And we got to see glimpses of that potential in the form of the enthusiasm of the attendees at the event and the interesting panel discussions and presentations that marked the day, as well as in the machinery demonstrations that accompanied the event. I would like to say a big thank you to all of our readers associated with the event. Thank you for attending and also for staying until the very end. It was very encouraging to see that the content of the event was compelling enough for us to retain almost the entire audience until the very end. A big thank you also to all our sponsors for reposing their faith in us. As I remarked in my address at the event, it’s the pioneers and trend setters who take the first steps into uncharted waters and you were among those. Going by the feedback that we have received from all stakeholders in the event, it is gratifying for me to note that your trust in us was not misplaced. Our aim was to stimulate discussion within the industry and its stakeholders, which we believe is beneficial for the entire sector. It was a humble beginning, but a positive one, and we aim to learn from it as we seek to build and make more impactful contributions to the industry in the future. Thank you again and stay connected!

Al Faris executes Jordan wind energy project Middle East heavy lifting specialist Al Faris has used a 500t Liebherr all-terrain mobile crane to assemble and erect windmills on a Jordanian project. The Dubai-based company said it mobilised a Liebherr LTM 1500 for the Jordan wind farm project which it was awarded recently. “After careful consideration and calculations, the Liebherr LTM 1500 500t all-terrain crane was selected as the most suitable to safely carry out the heavy lifts. The crane was mobilised to Jordan from our branch in Saudi Arabia along with three of our well-trained staff members, showcasing our capabilities and strength to cater to any projects in the entire Middle East region,” said Al Faris.

The company added that all surveys, planning, technical support documentation, execution plans and schedules were prepared in-house prior to job execution, which helped in organising all activities smoothly and kept delays to a minimum. “Execution was safely carried out by our trained operators. The loads varied from 64t to 90t. Our 550t mobile crane was used with main boom operations,” said a statement from Al Faris, adding that a strong commitment and focus was also shown to adhere to the best HSE practices on-site, which were discussed in detail with the client prior to the commencement of operations.

Volvo CE celebrates connectivity milestone

Volvo Construction Equipment (CE) recently celebrated the Volvo Group milestone of reaching one million connected customer assets by handing over four excavators to a Danish rental company. Each of the excavators delivered to signify the milestone is equipped with Volvo’s built-in telematics system CareTrack. connected commercial vehicles and machines in the industry, is only the start. Volvo CE has 150,000 of the group’s connected assets, with Volvo connectivity technologies helping customers boost uptime, safety and productivity with smart site solutions. Handing over the excavators to rental company GSV Materieludlejning, Jens Ejsing, MD, Volvo CE, Denmark, said: “We are proud to be leading the field

with the highest quality connected solutions. For us, connectivity means not only significant increases in safety, uptime and fuel efficiency, all the while lowering costs, but it is also a vital tool to realise our goal to build a better world.” The three machines – an EC220EL, an ECR235EL and two EC250EL excavators – are fitted with CareTrack, which works by capturing thousands of machine data points that are monitored remotely in a Volvo Uptime Centre by dedicated experts. The experts use diagnostic software to process data in real time and filter back information to users, thanks to which wear on crucial parts can be predicted, services planned and spare parts ordered in advance – all reducing downtime for the owner, thus leading to increased productivity, said Volvo.

Bobcat moves into new EMEA HQ Doosan Bobcat EMEA has announced the opening of its new headquarters for the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) region in Dobris, outside the Czech capital Prague, marking a further expansion in its regional hub. The new three-storey headquarters building, worth $11.03m, covers a surface area of 1,561sqm and will offer more than 3,370sqm of office space for 200 employees. Investment was also made to create more than 7,000sqm of green areas around the building. The compact machinery major said that as part of its Dobris campus, the new building houses the company’s management and other employees and complements the adjacent

production plant and the training and innovation centre, where Bobcat machines are created for Europe and the rest of the world. Bobcat said that this year alone its investment in the Dobris campus will reach

over $22m. Last year the company’s revenue for the EMEA region amounted to $843.8m, with the Dobris factory producing a record 17,206 machines. This year, the company plans to increase production by 20% and break

through the barrier of 20,000 machines for the first time. Gustavo Otero, president of Doosan Bobcat EMEA, said: “With the opening of the new headquarters in Dobris, we are completing an investment which – thanks to the concentration of development, production and management of the company in one place – is of socioeconomic importance for the whole region and exceptional within our industry. During Doosan Bobcat’s operations in the Czech Republic, we have invested approximately $132.4m, increased production five-fold and more than tripled the number of employees. In the future, we expect a further recruitment of blue-collar professionals and expert positions in development.”

Its short-tail swing was ideal for the busy site, on which there were several parked vehicles and trucks frequently arriving and departing. This is the first Hitachi excavator to be used by the company, which has a fleet of six other excavators and five wheeled loaders. Works supervisor Fabrice Klemencic contacted local Hitachi dealer Teramat with his request, due to his longstanding working relationship with salesman Carlos Negrillo. His previous experience with Hitachi machines

while working at a different company and Teramat’s reputation for providing a high standard of service were also factors in his decision. “We wanted to hire a 13-15t excavator, as we had the work but did not have the financial means to purchase a machine of this size at that time,” said Klemencic. He found the rental process to be straightforward with Hitachi and Teramat, and appreciated having an opportunity to test the new model before buying. “The advantage of renting equipment is that we get new machines with the specification we asked for. If we’re satisfied with it

and we have the work, we’re likely to purchase it. Normally it’s quite complicated to rent a machine, and if you source one from a hire company, you don’t have the chance to buy the machine later. We selected Hitachi and Teramat because we say, ‘Hitachi – no worries.’” The ZX135US-6 is also the first Hitachi excavator to be used by operator Cyril Bergeret, who said: “It is comfortable, easy to use, fast and responsive, and the noise levels are low. They have really thought about the features for the operator, and this helps us to feel less tired in the evening.”

Grove TMS5002 truck crane has provided the perfect support to a helicopter in the installation of an aerial on a radio tower in Maryland, USA. Digging and Rigging, a crane and rigging company based out of Mount Airy, Maryland, deployed the Grove TMS500-2 truck crane to assist the helicopter with the installation of the new radio tower in Clear Spring, Maryland. The helicopter airlifted the 5t tower antenna while the truck crane helped tail it until it was in a complete vertical position. Digging and Rigging

said the decision to use the TMS500-2 in this unique job-site application was taken because of the crane’s light weight, versatility and excellent taxi capabilities. “It was an exciting job because this truck crane was just acquired by Digging and Rigging and this was the first project it was put to work on, which is not an ordinary everyday lift for a crane,” said Andrew Forepaugh, vice president of Sales at Crane and Shovel, the dealer that helped the Digging and Rigging team choose the TMS500-2. “The whole team was excited about this unique opportunity, and the crane performed great.”

he world’s first fully electric mini excavator is coming to the Middle East. JCB’s 19C-1E, launched earlier this year, will be among the star attractions at The Big 5 Heavy in Dubai towards the end of this month. Finding pride of place on the JCB stand at the show from November 25-28, the machine is making its debut in the region, becoming probably the first machine of its kind to make it to these shores. The construction machinery industry is now quite without doubt that electric and alternative fuel machines are the future, and that future is not very far away. This was evident at Bauma this year, where almost every global manufacturer of repute had some electric models on display – mainly in the compact category, which seems to be the favoured class for manufacturers to launch electric machines in, given the lower power requirements of small

units. Both Bobcat and Volvo CE have launched the thinking behind bringing it to the Middle East. Contractors will also be able to work after normal hours without disturbing residents, as well as operate in other noise-sensitive environments including near hospitals and schools.” The lithium-ion batteries’ 15-20kWh of energy storage is enough for a full working shift for the majority of mini excavator customers, says JCB. The machine is initially equipped with both 110V and 230V charging, while the fast charge option will be available soon. The 230V 16A supply, such as found in the GCC countries, requires an eight-hour charge time from empty. The batteries have been designed to last the operating life of the machine. JCB says that using a 48V electrical system, an efficient electric motor delivers instant torque to power the machine’s proven Bosch Rexroth loadsensing hydraulic system. This delivers the same digging performance as JCB’s standard conventionally powered 19C-1. The hydraulic system also delivers a 32 litre/min twin flow auxiliary circuit. The high efficiency of this advanced electric-

hydraulic combination means only a small hydraulic cooler with a small thermostatic electric fan and no engine radiator, contributing to longer battery life and the lower noise level. With no daily checks of coolant and engine oil levels required, the machine can commence work quicker than its diesel counterpart. The machine has three operating modes, controlled by a rotary dial. In the ‘low’ setting the electric motor runs at 1,200rpm, in ‘general’ it runs at 1,600rpm, and in ‘high’ mode it runs at 1,800rpm. There is an additional Auto Kick Up mode for tracking, where the motor operates at 2,300rpm for rapid movement of the machine between digging sites. The 19C-1E is equipped with the same adjustable undercarriage and choice of digging equipment as the diesel model, providing a maximum digging depth of 2,891mm with the longer 1,344mm dipper arm. Initially, the mini excavator will be available with a ROPS/TOPS and FOGS-certified canopy. As it is based on the premium specification 19C1, it comes with proportional rocker switches for auxiliary functions and boom offset swing. The

premium model also has a membrane switch pad to the right of the operator for all additional controls, while the fuel gauge has been replaced by an easy-to-read charge level readout. Features and specs

EVENT REPORT NOVEMBER 2019

T

he Middle East’s events landscape for construction equipment saw a new addition last month with the Access & Handling Summit in Dubai on October 21 at the Ghaiya Grand Hotel. Safety, productivity, the importance of training, telematics and digitisation, the incorporation of building information modelling in powered access and effective service – these were some of the topics covered at the first edition of the event. Organised jointly by CMME and CPI Trade Media, the inaugural summit saw a congregation of more than 70 top professionals in the Middle East powered access sector, including the major manufacturers, rental companies, dealers, contractors, facilities management companies and other end users. The half-day event was a unique mix of panel discussions and presentations, and outdoor display and demonstrations of access equipment – a concept combining the ideating style of a conference and the hands-on, practical aspects of a machinery exhibition. With a full house from the morning right until the afternoon ending, it was evident the concept went down well with the cream of the region’s access sector professionals. The panellists and speakers were some of the top industry experts. The summit was divided into three sessions: The State of the Industry; Business and Technology; and Safety and Operations. A

separate machinery demonstration period was allocated between the first and second sessions for the outdoor equipment show. Opening with the panel discussion ‘The Trends Shaping the MEWP Industry’, the summit saw a lively discussion about the latest global and local trends between Ian Hume, sales director, Middle East, Africa and India at JLG; Sharbel Kordahi, MD, Terex Equipment Middle East, owners of the Genie brand; Wayne Taylor, MD of Abu Dhabi-based rental heavyweight Safelift; and Eyad El Sharif, country manager, UAE, at rental major Rapid Access. Speaking about where the GCC countries’ stand in adopting new technologies, Hume said some of the demands and realities of this market make it difficult for the region to be on the same level as many of the most advanced in the world. “At Bauma this year, we saw all manufacturers emphasise MEWPs using alternative fuel sources, such as electric and hybrid. JLG also had new introductions on display that used nonconventional power sources. That’s where the access sector is headed. If you go into urban areas in Europe, for example, you can’t run a machine that causes noise pollution or emissions. We are some way away from that in the Middle East,” Hume said. Agreeing with him, Kordahi added: “It is incumbent on us manufacturers to bring in our latest to the Middle East and promote it. We need to play our role in giving a push to the access sector here, so that the region is in step with the world.” Discussing the state of safety standards in the GCC, Taylor from rental biggie Safelift, said: “At

the moment, safety is not the concern that it should be in this region. People do not prioritise it in the way that the more mature markets do. We need official action in this regard. Governments around the region need to proactively demand, set and enforce stricter safety practices and bring in global best practices. For example, you can open up a rental company here without adherence to safety and fleet guidelines. So, while you have a company like ours that provides

international standards of safety and training across our entire fleet, you also have momand-pop rental companies opening up with just a couple of MEWPS and without any safety compliance. This needs to change and we need guidelines such as the recently published ones for job-site safety by Dubai Municipality.” El Sharif pointed out that Rapid Access, part of the global rental giant Loxam Group, put the greatest emphasis it could on safety. “We bring the same international standards here that

dAzzling under The sun The Access & Handling Summit organised by CmmE last month was the demonstrations of some of the latest and important access machines by their manufacturers. JLG, JCB and Snorkel showed of their machines in a dedicated outdoor space at the premises of the venue where the summit took place. While JLG displayed and demonstrated three models, for JCB and Snorkel it was one each. The first machine JLG demonstrated was the Toucan 10E mast boom lift. JLG’s Ibraiz Ahmed operated the machine and led the audience of more than 70 attendees at the event through its functions and uses. “The Toucan 10E is one of the best solutions for the facilities maintenance sector where high level structures have to be maintained or repaired. It has a very small footprint

and a low machine weight, while still boasting high weight capacity of the platform. The articulation is also straight up and down, which means it can operate in confined spaces,” Ahmed said. JLG also demonstrated the E450AJ articulating boom lift, which is designed to fold out and provide up-and-over reach for a structure. Designed more for outdoor use, it is apt for various

sectors, such as construction, FM and others, Ahmed said. The last JLG machine was the low-level access Power Tower Duo, a small platform for daily work at lower heights, such as for cleaning and maintenance. JCB sowed off its 531-70 telehandler and Mike Yates gave the attendees a walkaround of its features, explaining how the telehandler is also a versatile machine in the access field. Andrew Fishburn, sales manager, Middle East, at Snorkel, demonstrated the Snorkel S4732E scissor lift, an electric model that has a platform capacity of 350kg, which it can lift to a working height of 11.8m and can work an entire eight-hour day on a full battery charge. Fishburn operated the machine using both a wired remote control from ground level as well as a set of buttons incorporated into the scissor lift’s base.

the Loxam Group follows globally in terms of safety, training, equipment maintenance and all other processes. We are trying to lead safety practices here with initiatives like our virtual reality training simulator. We would like to see the sector set a high benchmark and also have official enforcement of global standards.” The second panel discussion of the event, titled ‘Safety at Height’, saw Ibraiz Ahmed, JLG’s Middle East parts and training manager, Gary Cooke, regional sales manager at Genie, and Lamis Al Kaisi, Middle East representative of PASMA, take up the safety in detail. “There needs to be more awareness among end users about the safety and training available to them,” said Ahmed. “Depending on who the end user is, sometimes this awareness is absent. It is necessary for the entire sector, including manufacturers, rental companies, project owners, contractors and all other stakeholders, to raise awareness on this.” Al Kaisis added: “What needs to go hand in hand is enforcement. The authorities need to make it mandatory that the recommended safety standards are followed and ensure that job-sites are adhering to them.” Cooke felt there was need to bring in uniformity in the sector in the Middle East. “Safety requirements need to be standardised throughout the region. Right now, they differ from a country-to-country and even on a project-to-project basis. Getting a commonality of approach is very important.” The event also saw presentations on various topics by experts. Neil Doherty, chief engineer, NPD and EMEA Digital Products, at JLG, described JLG’s BIM library and telematics systems in two separate presentations that were well received by attendees for their knowledge content. JCB’s Mike Yates presented his company’s new powered access range and spoke about the use of the ‘Telehandler in Powered Access’, while Genie’s Kordahi led the audience through the optimum ‘Replacement Cycle and ROI’ in his presentation, which fleet owners felt was particularly useful for them.

INTERVIEW NOVEMBER 2019

German tyre giant Continental showed off its off-the-road tyres at Bauma this year and introduced the Contilogger tyre telematics system, which it has now brought to the Middle East.

“We see the Middle East market as having great potential and a bright future… On the construction side, we have a lot of mega projects all around the region and these are all very good potential markets for our earthmoving tyres”

Continental has a prominent presenCe in the off-theroad tyres segment, and is working to introduCe new tyres, teChnologies and solutions for middle east Customers, says the head of segment for the middle east

A

s an automotive technology and tyre brand, Continental needs no introduction. For close to 150 years, the German giant has been one of the top suppliers of tyres and technology to vehicle makers all over the world and is among the most visible brands in the sector. And though its visibility may be slightly less in the construction sphere, Continental’s products and services extend into this arena as well, with a line-up of speciality tyres for earthmoving, port, material handling and other machinery applications, as well as tyre telematics that improve job-site performance. Continental has a name for its off-the-road tyre products – commercial specialty tyres (CST). Hamzeh Afaneh, head of sales for the CST segment at the German multinational giant, tells CMME that Continental is among the major suppliers to the Middle East’s project landscape, as well as to the region’s mining segment, with its OTR tyres, which it produces in three different segments: material handling, earthmoving and agriculture. Please give us an overview of Continental’s history in the Middle East and its products for the off-the-road segment. Continental was born in Germany in 1871. In the almost 150 years that the company has been in existence now, we have become one of the world’s foremost automotive products and technology enterprises, offering efficient, intelligent solutions

for vehicles, machines and traffic transport. Continental’s heritage and culture as a company is about developing pioneering technology and services that can be substantial for the mobility and automotive business. We’ve had a long presence in the Middle East as well, but we started with an official representative office in this market in 2006, and in 2015 we became an official legal company for this region. In terms of products, Continental’s vision and signature is mobility, technology and freedom. We want to push mobility forward with our different product groups, starting from regular passenger cars and passenger and light trucks to heavy trucks or trucks and buses for all commercial on-road application. Plus, of course, we have the off-highway products, which you will not see on the road. These are tyres built for very special applications, and we call that segment commercial specialty tyres, or CST. These products serve the region well, with their focus on different applications and use in fleets of material handlers, dump trucks and other such machines. They are the right tyres and the right solutions for these applications. So you see why we are a multi-product company; we are not just focusing on one segment but we are providing the full range, from the OTR and specialty tyres to on-road truck tyres. How is the CST market performing in the Middle East, and how important is this segment to Continental? We see the Middle East market as having great potential and a bright future. If you look at the regional market, you can see quick and constant

INTERVIEW NOVEMBER 2019

NEW CoNTILoggER

effiCienCy with Continuous data logging Continental’s newest technological innovation, the ContiLogger, was launched at Bauma in April and slated for introduction into the Middle East in the second half of 2019. Targeting the OTR segment, this new consultancy concept offers cost-effective analysis of cycle downtime, distance, speed, lateral forces, cornering and road grade, enabling optimised route management and perfectly coordinated tyre use, says Continental. ContiLogger combines tyres, hardware, software, data and manpower into an individual consulting service approach. It uses a range of components including GPS to capture data such as tyre

pressure, tyre temperature and vehicle and topographic data in real-life applications, and transmits it to Continental experts for analysis. With the aid of the GPS-generated data, Continental field engineers are able to identify whether a tyre is being overloaded or underused, and thus extend tyre lifetime and adapt operational processes so that overall productivity is increased. “We know that the product itself is not enough, so we are providing our customers with a solution which contains the tyre as a product plus the technology behind it that can help customers. This technology saves a lot of money, because the off-road segment products are not cheap and if, for

changes. On the construction side especially, we have a lot of mega projects all around the region and these are all very good potential markets for our earthmoving tyres, for example. This is also good for our mining and quarrying segment, because these projects demand raw materials and builders would like to source them locally as much as possible to cut down on cost, thus keeping the wheels of mining and quarrying equipment turning. The construction and quarrying segment aside, if you look to the material handling side, the ports and logistics business is huge in the Middle East and you see so many ports increasing their capacity in order to accept or receive more shipping from different destinations. You can also see how the Dubai market is special because it’s such a big hub, not only regionally but also for the whole world. It is very important for us as well that we are looking to this market, and we are very close to it to understand what its requirements are, to allow us to align with future trends and the technologies. We want to be at the centre of all future advancements in the region in our markets and product categories. But what about the rest of the region? How does Continental view the wider GCC or the Middle East? Of course, just because we are in Dubai doesn’t mean we are only looking at the UAE. As part of our business, we handle the entire Middle East from our regional hub office in Dubai. This also includes East Africa,

Continental’s commercial specialty tyres (CST) division is responsible for its off-the-road range, which includes products for earthmoving, material handling and agriculture.

example, there is a drop on air pressure in the tyres or overheating, you can lose the tyre easily and you can also spoil the machine,” says Hamzeh Afaneh. “With this technology you can have preventive maintenance before a problem even becomes a problem. You can receive notification about what’s wrong and the service team can go in and check for faults and rectify whatever has gone wrong or even can go wrong. “Notifications can be received by the machine driver or operator, who can make a decision to stop the machine or not. Also, a fleet

so we manage almost 19 countries now with the Middle East and East Africa markets combined. And we are very successful in each of these territories, just as we are in Dubai or in the GCC countries. Of course, each market has its own demands and peculiarities, which enables us to be more successful in a market with one product category and with another category in another market. For example, some countries don’t have access to the sea and therefore have no ports, which means we

manager or central person in a fleet can receive the data and make decisions based on it. We also have an advanced service where Continental can receive the data routed through the cloud or servers, analyse it and send more holistic recommendations back to the operator or customer.”

are looking at the earthmoving sector there, whereas other countries may have more than one port and that allows us to target the port and material handling segment. Please take us through the CST range. Continental’s CST range, which I’m handling in the region, has three main segments: earthmoving, material handling and agriculture. Each of these are further divided into sub-segments. For example, we have the construction and mining sub-segments under earthmoving. In these we have both above-ground application products for construction sites, as well as products for underground mines. Similarly, in material handling we have the OTR material handling tyres, which are the big OTR tyres you see on the mobile cranes and port equipment, and we have the industrial tyres, which are smaller from a size point of view for machines like forklifts and so on. We can further classify these tyres on the basis of areas of operation, such as airports or ports. In each application we define an appropriate product that can perform optimally in the particular environment and conditions. You can see it clearly when you go to airports – our tyres are used for all the ground equipment around the airplane. We don’t have tyres for the planes, but the equipment all around them needs special tyres that are unique for that particular requirement and completely different from tyres for forklifts working in a warehouse or plant.

29

What are some of the big projects and job-sites in the region where we can see Continental’s CST tyres at work? We supply tyres to many projects in the region, some of which are mega projects. Our tyres are being used in a huge phosphate mine in Jordan; in Kuwait, we are involved with one of the biggest construction companies; in Saudi Arabia as well, we have various large earthmoving projects. I can say we are at the same level in material handling on the ports side. We cover the major ports in different markets and have a big share in this sector. I will not name the projects, but we are involved in all the biggest around the region. So we cover everything from heavy construction to mining to ports – the entire spectrum. The Middle East has some of the harshest environments and job-site conditions in the world. How do you make sure your products are fit for the demands this places on them? Our signature in this business is that we always work to make our tyres suitable for market requirements. To know exactly what the requirements are, we sometimes

take time to launch a product, which brings me to the research and development that Continental does from our main base in Germany. We build a product according to market requirements and then we test it, both in-house in our laboratories and testing grounds, and then in actual field tests. Several factors differ from one place or region to another, such as the temperature, terrain, loads, etc. This is why we are always looking at the Middle East as a special environment in which to test and perfect our products.

Hamzeh Afaneh, head of sales for Continental’s CST segment, says the company is among the major suppliers to the Middle East’s project landscape, as well as to the region’s mining segment.

While we do not make tyres on a projectspecific basis, instead catering to the more general requirements of our target segments in the market, we do take all feedback from the users of our tyres very seriously. So if our tyres are working on a project which requires higher specifications, performance or durability, then we are quick to incorporate that feedback into our developmental process and effect positive changes based on that feedback from the market or that specific customer. This has happened many times. An important example of this is in the port business, where we launched our Compound Plus tyres, a big success in the segment. We already had a good share in that business, but we got feedback from a customer about one feature that could be enhanced. We talked to customers and relayed this information back to our R&D department, and they found a better solution with higher performance and durability that gives greater benefit to customers. This enhanced product is now available in the market. We find value in all feedback from customers, because for us it is the starting point sometimes for better solutions and better ideas that enable us to offer more complete solutions to our customers.

NEW RELEASES NOVEMBER 2019

SDLG enhanceS motor GraDerS Why get it? Updates inclUde new cab and engine hood, with easier maintenance points SDLG has announced a makeover of its G9138, G9190 and G9220 motor graders, combining improvements to the cab and operator environment with a fresh new look for the machines. The grader models range in working weight from 12-16.5t, have maximum forward speeds of 3439km/h, minimum turning radii of 6.5-7.6m and maximum tractive force of 75.4-87kN. The Volvo-owned Chinese manufacturer said the graders have now been fitted with new modern-looking cabs that provide easier entry and exit. Visibility has also been enhanced with larger glazed areas and thinner pillars with thinner silicone stripes, helping operators to complete tasks with greater safety, accuracy and productivity. A new front display also improves visibility and makes the gauges easier to read by following the movement of the pedestal, said the manufacturer. The display also includes an articulation indictor to aid the operator. Visibility is further improved by a new right dashboard down to the rear right wheel

and to the right-hand side, giving a clear overview of the buttons and making them quicker and easier to access. When servicing the machines, the new engine hood has a larger opening for easier access to all the components. The new hydraulic sight glass also helps technicians in carrying out effective regular maintenance checks. The cab air filter is now positioned behind the right-hand side window, increasing visibility, and one of the filters can even be accessed from inside the cab. Improving both durability and reliability, the graders now include a single large tilt cylinder on the mouldboard instead of two small ones, as well as new upper and lower guide rails. “Our SDLG motor graders are already proving popular on the market and these latest updates to their visibility, durability, ease of operation and maintenance are set to make them even more of a safe, reliable and productive choice,” said Henrik Sjöstrand, product manager, SDLG. atLaS copco expanDS QIS StanDby GenSet ranGe Why get it? modUlar capabilities for optimal performance in demanding standby and stationary prime applications Atlas Copco has expanded its range of QIS generators by adding six new models in the 35-135kVA power range to its augmented portfolio. The Swedish machinery giant said the new models are designed with modular capabilities to provide optimal performance in the most demanding conditions for both standby and stationary prime applications, such as data centres, healthcare, utilities and manufacturing. The additions are the Kubota-engined QIS 35 and QIS 45 units with mechanical speed control, and the Cummins powered and electronically controlled QIS 65, 95, 115 and 135 generators. Atlas Copco said the models have been developed with integrated control, simple installation, transport efficiency and minimum service downtime in mind. Some other benefits of the compact, plug and play units are instant response, guaranteed performance and exceptional reliability, said the manufacturer. Key features of the QIS 35-135 kVA generators include G2 CLASS (ISO 8528) in-line engines, with dual-stage air filtration for increased engine lifetime. Dual-stage fuel and diesel filtration are also provided for units rated above 65kVA. On smaller models below 45kVA, an electric prime pump with fuel pre-filter ensures optimum performance in high-altitude applications. In addition, the generators’ special fan and cooling system is designed to improve air flow and cope with ambient temperatures up to 50ºC. All units are mounted on a standard spillage free frame (110% capacity of the largest tank) with integrated forklift slots and are protected by a sound-attenuated and anti-corrosion treated steel canopy.

new cat SkID-Steer anD compact trackeD LoaDer SerIeS Why get it? new d3 series line-Up sports improved technology, performance and operator comfort Caterpillar has announced the launch of 16 new skid-steer loader (SSL) and compact tracked loader (CTL) models, which advance the manufacturer’s small loader models to the D3 Series. Cat said the new D3 Series machines have an engine power range of 67-110hp and advance the reputation of their predecessors – the D and D2 Series – for

quality, comfort and performance by delivering improvements in operator experience and track loader stability. The D3 Series models also support a line of new ‘smart attachments’, an industry first, Cat said. This advanced machine technology recognises certain attachments and tailors the controls and operator information to match the tool and the task. The new D3 models provide easier ingress and egress, with a wider opening cab door for enclosed cabs. Additionally, the distance between joystick pods has increased by 76mm, offering extra space for the operator inside the cab to deliver a more comfortable experience. The new Cat D3 Series CTLs deliver improved operating stability while handling heavy loads, grading or truck loading, Cat said, with changes to the undercarriage frame and torsion axles reducing machine pitching and rocking while still offering superior ride comfort. The D3 Series CTLs feature standard two-speed travel for better performance at job-sites and are geared to deliver high-torque digging performance as well as high topend travel speed. The Cat 279D3 and 289D3 loaders have ground speeds of 13.6km/h, a 20% increase

over their D Series counterparts. The 239D3 and 249D3 models now have two-speed transmission as standard, versus the previous single speed, increasing travel speed by 9% and aligning these models with the rest of the two-speed equipped CTL model range. Cat added that the D3 Series models are equipped with smart technology for better integration with the new smart attachments. This advanced attachment technology allows them to automatically recognise an attachment and convert machine controls to align with its operational and informational needs. Among the advanced control features offered in the new D3 Series models are Return-to-Dig and Work Tool Positioner, to assist operators with repetitive tasks like grading, digging and loading. These are now bundled together with a dualdirection, self-level feature to enable even more operators to take advantage of features that automate machine functions and enable these tasks to be completed with less user interaction and expertise. cat announceS new rotary mIxer Why get it? models improves on predecessor with more power and manoeUvrability Caterpillar has announced the availability of its new rotary mixer, the RM400, which replaces the older RM300 model and introduces new features and enhancements, such as more power and better manoeuvrability. The machinery giant said the new RM400, which will be delivered from the second quarter of 2020, offers 19% more power and an enhanced operating environment as well as easier manoeuvrability, features that help contractors achieve demanding job specifications in both full-depth reclamation and soil stabilisation applications. Weighing 23.5t, the machine delivers a 2.4m cutting width and 417hp of power from the Cat C9.3 engine. Standard all-wheel drive uses four independent drive pumps for maximum torque while providing high traction and greater speed for moving around the job-site. An operating length of 9.56m is 44cm shorter than the RM300, a feature that improves manoeuvrability on the job-site while also enhancing visibility, says Cat. A full left-to-right sliding cab enhances side-to-side viewing to the tyre edges and rotor cut lines for improved operator efficiency and increased production. Standard front and rear-facing cameras viewed through a display in the cab provide good visibility, while optional side-mounted cameras provide good sight lines along the machine for enhanced safety. Optional cameras can be mounted in front and behind the rotor chamber. The front one assists the operator when cutting close to obstacles like manholes and curbs, while the rear provides a good view of the discharge material.

terex craneS LauncheS tower trIo Why get it? brand’s expanded range featUres first hydraUlic lUffer with high capacity and jib length Three new tower cranes are set to join the Terex Cranes family, including the company’s first hydraulic luffing jib tower crane, after Terex previewed the range at an event in its factory in northern Italy this month. Of the three models previewed, the largest is the CTLH 192-12, a 12t-capacity hydraulic luffer which is the first of its type from Terex. The crane’s maximum jib length is 55m with a jib-end lifting capacity of 2.35t. The model’s radius when parked and out of service is 8m and it can be mounted on the HD23, TS23, TS21 or H20 tower masts, said Terex Cranes. The hoist winch is 67kW, while the hydraulic luffing mechanism is 30kW. Features such as Terex Power Plus and Terex Power Match have been incorporated in the crane’s control system. The crane is ready for the fitting of anti-collision and zoning systems, and Terex says the set-up is easy. The CTLH 192-12 uses Terex’s T-Link telematics

platform inside its S-Pace cabin. The second tower crane previewed is the new Terex CTT 172-8 flat top, which has a lifting capacity of 8t on four falls of rope, with 65m of maximum jib length. A 4t version is also available on two falls of rope, which lifts its maximum out to a radius of more than 25m. The CTT 172-8’s maximum freestanding height is 64.9m and its control systems are similar to the hydraulic luffer, while compatible tower sections are TS16-TS21. The CTT 172-8 flat top replaces the CTT 162 with 200kg more tip load capacity and Terex’s new electronic control systems. Among its features is faster and easier setup, while operating speed can be reduced to increase capacity. Terex added that the model’s new cabin and power match function reduce electricity consumption. The last of the trio previewed by Terex is the new CSE 32 self-erecting tower crane, which can lift up to 4.4t and has a 32m jib length. Its tip load is 1.15t and the hook height can be altered between 19.721.5m, while the swing radius is 2.25m. The CTT 172-8 will be available from December after final testing is complete, while the CTLH 192-12 will be available from January 2020 and the CSE 32 from the second quarter next year. W

hat’s the secret behind a successful product? Is there a formula behind a blockbuster hit? Unlike the celluloid world, where nothing is certain, the construction machinery domain seems to think it has the formula down pat: listen to the customers and what they say they want; give it to them; increase quality, reliability and robustness, while decreasing cost. In short, offer a modicum of quality at a minimum of price. While all this looks fine on paper, the devil lies in the execution. As they say, there’s many a slip between… planning and product. But at Case Construction Equipment, that slip has not happened. On the contrary, the CNH Industrial Group company’s 570t and 570ST backhoe loaders have been revelations in the Middle East equipment sector. Early last year, a little bird told us that the Case 570 backhoe, made in India, was starting to set the sales charts on fire in the GCC. Being prudent journalists here at CMME, we took notice and followed the fortunes of this new introduction, which Case launched in April 2017. It proved a worthwhile pursuit. Along the way we learned that this Johnny-come-lately in the Middle East market had shot up the

popularity ratings in its segment during a stellar 2018, finishing among the year’s bestselling models. And it has carried on the success story this year. At the last count, it trails only a few venerable models, such as JCB’s extremely wellestablished 3CX, in the GCC backhoe loader (BHL) unit sales. Not bad at all for a model that has been here for less than three years and nearly didn’t make it to this part of the world. To find out more, we went behind the scenes and cornered Franco Invernizzi, senior business director, Middle East and Africa at Case, to get him to explain the 570 phenomenon. “The 570T and ST backhoe loaders are the latest addition to Case’s BHL range. They are designed to win over customers looking for productivity, versatility and fast return on investment, with many features to attract fleet owners and operators,” Invernizzi tells CMME. “We spotted a need in this market for a machine answering to a particular description. The feedback from our customers was that they wanted what was not really a budget machine but one that was more competitively priced, robust, easy to use and productive – and up to made-in-Europe in quality standards. “When we looked at our global BHL portfolio, we knew the 570T and 570ST answered that description. The numbers told the story for the machines. We have been selling them in India for a while and they are extremely popular in that country. India, as you know, is the world’s largest backhoe loader market. Any product that can hold its own there is a quality product. So the 570 BHL does have proven credentials.

40

COVER STORY NOVEMBER 2019

“But we took our time. To be honest, we were a bit reluctant initially to bring it to this region. We already had the 580 here, a solid machine in the particular backhoe loader segment that the 570 units cater to. Our customers really liked the 580T and ST, which were made-inItaly machines that were competitively priced in the market. So we had a top-notch product at a good price point, and we didn’t feel the market was ready to move to the 570T. “So the 570T was actually sold for over three years in India before we brought it into the Middle East and also into our African markets for testing. It survived the punch well, and we introduced it in the market here. And customers took to it. Since then, there has been no looking back. It is now our largest selling backhoe loader model and the first choice of our customers. Since we launched the 570T, it’s really moved into the 580T market.” Success has been quick and comprehensive; so what was behind the hesitation in bringing it here? “Firstly, the 570T had been purposely built for and sold in the Indian market, and we had to make sure it was the right fit for the Middle East as well. This required very thorough testing and validation,” Invernizzi says. “Secondly, speaking to our customers here, we found them resistant at that time to touching an Indian-made machine, especially our repeat and key account customers, because they already had the Italian-built 580T. They were apprehensive about the quality, and they asked us repeatedly whether we were sure the machine had no quality issues. That’s why the move took the time it did. “We also had to make sure that, by the time we launched it in the Middle East and Africa markets, India had worked out all the

bugs in the model and it was up to the Case standards that our customers expected. Once everything fell in place, we were ready; we had been waiting for the opportunity and we introduced the 570T into the Middle East.” Putting quality concerns to rest, he adds: “It’s a budget machine, but you’re still getting the same Case quality and it’s built in a factory that is already a bronze certified WCM (World Class Manufacturing) plant, and in the process of obtaining a silver certification, the same as our plant in Italy. The production line in our factory in Pithampur, central India, is extremely efficient and well-organised, geared fully towards manufacturing to the highest quality

standard at the lowest possible cost. It’s a factory that any manufacturer would be proud to show off, and that’s exactly what we did when we took a team of 51 customers from the Middle East and Africa there on a visit recently. They came away really impressed by the plant, the manufacturing process and the attention to quality and detail.” The proof of the pudding is in the eating, and Invernizzi points out that the feedback Case has received for the 570T and ST in the Middle East “is vindication of our faith in the machine”. “Customers really like the machine, and the sales figures speak for that more eloquently than any testimonial could. But I can tell you that our customers have told us the machine is really reliable. The rental market especially has taken to it in a big way because of several fleetfriendly factors, such as low operating costs and ease of maintenance and repair. We have sold many units to the rental sector to firms of all sizes, from the small two-to-three-machine outfits to the really big names. “Those customers have come back to us very happy with the product. We’ve received really good feedback on the machine. We initially had a few niggles with the cab air conditioner right after we launched in 2017, but that was soon solved by installing a larger and stronger unit as standard for the Middle East. And the operators are delighted with the cab environment, its space, comfort and easy-to-use controls.” This leads us to the vital features that have made it popular, and Invernizzi elaborates: “The model was designed to be robust and easy to maintain, and its origin is India, so it was first built for the Indian market. The practice in places like India and Africa is that the operators and other workers travel with the machines to the job-site and they’ll end up sleeping inside their machines, so they need space in the cabin. “Therefore, the cab of the 570 models is larger to accommodate more people. We say it’s the largest cab in the segment. We have a bench seat – or what we call the Dixie seat – on one side of the cab, and you can seat three on it if you need to transport people on a job-site or the operator needs helpers to assist in his machine operations. There’s also space to carry tools that might be needed on the job. “The rear window opens up, as do all the other windows, so there is ample air circulation and ventilation. And, of course, it’s got a highperformance air conditioner in the cab, so the operator does not have to worry about the summer heat in the Middle East.” At the heart of the 570t and ST is the engine, made by Case’s sister CNH Industrial concern FPT. “It’s FPT’s tried and tested S8000 engine, again made in India to suit the rigorous and harsh work environment there, which makes it perfectly suitable for the Middle East. We’ve

41

produced over three million of these engines, so you know by those figures that reliability is never going to be an issue with the S8000. And it’s the engine that differentiates the 570T and ST; while the T is an 86hp machine with 400Nm torque, the ST puts out 96hp and delivers 420Nm of torque.” Robustness and strength are of course a given for a machine built in and for India, as well as Africa and the Middle East, and the 570T’s features do not disappoint. “The backhoe on the 570T is what we call an S-style boom, which is a

larger, heavier-duty, reinforced boom from Case. This means users get more reach and a better lift at maximum reach. The S-style boom is something we hadn’t seen before this machine. Another addition to the robustness is in the axles, where we used Carraro components for both the front and rear. The front axles, moreover, are particularly heavy-duty. “Further aiding reliability is the 570T’s radiator, rated to perform at ambient temperatures of 50 degrees-plus. This is a tropical specification that is vital for the Middle East and ensures the

Case showCases indian manufaCturing strength Case demonstrated the manufacturing capabilities and standards of its plant in Pithampur, India, to key stakeholders from the Middle East, Africa and China in September, taking 60 delegates on a seminar and tour of the facility. Neil Woodfin, VP – Construction and head of Global Alliance at CNH Industrial said: “India is a manufacturing hub and a strategically important market in CNH Industrial’s global growth plan. The ‘Made in CNH Industrial India’ initiative is a reflection of our excellence. The state-of-

the-art facility in Pithampur is amongst the best in the country and the adoption of global manufacturing standards has further increased the plant’s role in our overall construction equipment business plan.” The Pithampur plant produces a full range of equipment, supported by research and development, and Case exports from there to its global markets including the Middle East. “The Pithampur plant has been operational for over 25 years and we manage a prolific supplier and customer base there. With

such a long presence, along with an excellent in-house R&D team, we are closer to the needs of our consumers at the facility,” said Woodfin. “Our tenure is our strength, which has enabled us to establish exceptional longstanding relationships with our partners. Where others new to the country need time to set up and start building relationships, we have robust affiliations in India for consistently meeting required standards.”

machine doesn’t overheat while working in our hot summers. We’ve also made maintenance super easy. Almost anybody can do the regular maintenance on this machine.” He lists more special features: “The hydraulic system on the 570T has a very efficient pump and draws from one of the innovative features on the machine – larger hydraulic cylinders. This enables the entire system and the pump to perform optimally at lower hydraulic pressure to generate the same required force, reducing stress on the pump, increasing its reliability and durability while strengthening the lifting system. “A special feature only available on the 570ST is Return to Dig, a function that makes the loader bucket automatically drop and level out for the operator at the push of a lever, and stop at a certain position. It’s very wheel loader-like.” In the final analysis, the 570T has found a good market in the GCC, especially Saudi Arabia and the UAE. An underlying factor is of course the meticulous back-up that Case laid down before launching the model. “We first educated our regional dealers about the product and got the technical team in place, then put the parts in stock and the distribution in place to cover at least the first 2,000 hours or the first two years of the machine’s working life. All this was done before the launch, so there is a comprehensive support structure in place so that our customers have the best possible ownership experience, with seamless support and the lowest downtime possible.” With all these factors, it’s no surprise that the Case 570T, in a very short while, has become one of the most prominent backhoe loaders in the Middle East – and a winner for Case.

BACKHOE LOADERS NOVEMBER 2019

A mAchine for All reAsons

Combining the versatility of two maChines in one, the baCkhoe loader Continues to sell well in the region, despite the state of the market. CMME speaks to the major players about what they have to offer in arguably the most popular equipment Category in the region

I

f there is one class of construction equipment that is still holding its own in the Middle East market despite what is being acknowledged as a relative slackening of the pace, it is the backhoe loader, the versatile machine that combines a digger and a loader attached at either end to the same frame and body. And it’s no surprise that the backhoe loader has achieved the popularity that it continues to enjoy in the Middle East, which has made the region one of the biggest markets for the model in the world. The reason for this can be easily explained when you look at the Middle East’s location on the map and consider he demographic make-up of its construction sector workers. While some markets can be characterised as backhoe loader markets, even among these markets there are those that have literally a love affair with this versatile piece of kit – such as India, by far the world’s biggest market for the machine. Owing to the proximity of the Middle East to India, and the fact that a large number of those working on Middle East jobsites are drawn from the country, some of the habits and tendencies of the Indian construction market are carried over to our region as well. Given this phenomenon, it’s no surprise to see that the same brands that lead the Indian market in terms of

backhoe loader sales have replicated their performance in the Middle East as well. Spend a few days in India and you’ll see backhoes on every second street corner, and quickly understand why JCB built the world’s largest backhoe factory in the world in Ballabhgarh, near New Delhi. It is a similar story in the GCC region. In cities in Saudi Arabia, backhoes are a common sight on the roads, travelling between construction sites. Visit any job-site in the UAE and you’ll have very little chance to come away without seeing a backhoe. Typically, the multi-applicability of backhoes is sought after in countries – especially developing economies – where there’s significant amounts of infrastructure work taking place. And a backhoe is a solid investment for a contractor, since the machine will be useful whatever the next contract is. The backhoe loader (BHL) is one of the most utilised machines in the Middle East, and – similar to the skid steer loader – it’s probably safe to claim that new uses and applications for the machine are found nearly every day, given the variety of roles it has to perform. And even when the chips are down in the industry, this epitome of versatility is still managing to push the numbers and has become the best-selling category for many manufacturers. First off the block is JCB, the global market leader in backhoe loaders. As they won’t hesitate to remind you, 50% of all backhoes sold globally are JCB. The manufacturer has five main models in the market, from

43 A backhoe loader pioneer, JCB is today the runaway market leader, both globally and in the Middle East, with models like the 3CX and 4CX ruling the roost on jobsites in the region.

“With higher ground clearance and larger front shovel, the 4CX is capable of fast truck loading and the increased backhoe specifications make it a match for localised trenching work – a true two-in-one machine”

the 1CX up to the supersize 5CX, but the 3CX is by far the biggest volume seller around the region, says Rajbir Sandhu, regional generral manager for the Middle East at JCB. Speaking to the favoured value proposition of the two largest markets – Saudi and UAE – Sandhu says that in KSA the more basic variant, with canopy, two- or four-wheel drive, front shovel and standard backhoe is the bigger seller, whereas in the UAE customers opt for the fuller spec 3CX, with cab and AC, 4wd, the six-in-one front shovel with flip over forks and JCB’s Extradig extending dipper. The larger 4CX comes with extra capabilities that could prompt buyers to consider upsizing, not least full-sized tyres on the front, which improve its ability to traverse rough terrain or soft sand. “The 4CX goes one step further by offering sites more capability, with four equal-size tyres and four-wheel steering to get into and work in some of the toughest areas,” explains Sandhu. “With the higher ground clearance and larger front shovel, the 4CX is capable of fast truck loading and the increased backhoe specifications make it a match for localised trenching work – a true two-in-one machine.” Case Construction Equipment has a popular line-up of models in the regional market, including, of course, its bestseller the 570T. Franco Invernizzi, senior director, Africa and Middle East, tells CMME: “We also offer others in our range. We have the 580T, the 580 ST, the 590ST and the 695ST. Given that our 570T is so popular in the market in this region, you might wonder who buys the rest of our range, but there is a good market

The 695ST is the biggest model from Case Construction Equipment. The machine boasts high power and four equal sized wheels for more manoeuvrability.

for the entire portfolio. A lot of the tenders for large construction projects specify things like what the horsepower rating should be on the machines and what features they require in the cab. So we find that governmental tenders, for instance, will ask for specific requirements to be met, both on the machine and in the cab, and that’s where the 580T and ST come in, and of course the big one the 695ST, depending on if they want a model with large wheels.” The 695ST has four large wheels of equal sizes, whereas on Case’s other models the

rear wheels are large while the front ones are small. The advantage of four large wheels is better traction and the ability to hold the load better. The 695ST also comes with more steering options, so working in tighter spaces and around corners is easier. Invernizzi explains that projects such as building villas, with the structures being quite close together, are where the 695ST comes into its own, because it is more manoeuvrable. This is a bit counter intuitive, as smaller wheels are known to steer more easily and provide more manoeuvrability,

BACKHOE LOADERS NOVEMBER 2019

JCB 1CX

the swiss army knife of baCkhoes With the 1CX Compact backhoe loader, JCB gives users a smaller version of its standard 3CX while retaining the speed and power of the larger machine. The company says the unit is capable of travel speeds up to 40kph, allowing for easy roadablity between jobs or work areas. JCB also provides solution packs to customise the 3CX Compact to specific tasks. For example, the 1CX Pothole Master is configured with a skid-steer hitch in the front to engage attachments such as a sweeper, while a small patch planer has been designed to be mounted on the backhoe end. Diego Butzke, product manager,

JCB, says: “Over mainly the last five years, there has been a shift in backhoe design towards some of the sectors that are growing and needed solutions. One of the things that JCB has looked into is to make the backhoe a smaller machine – to reduce its work footprint into a compact unit so that the machine can serve in, for example, confined spaces. The 1CX Compact has a side-shift chassis on the back rather than a centre-mount

but Invernizzi points out that it depends a lot on steering functions on offer. “In the 695T we have two-wheel steering, four-wheel steering and crab-steering, which enables the unit to move laterally, providing a lot of flexibility to manoeuvre,” he explains, adding: “In terms of the market for our models, the UAE takes quite a bit of the 580T models and every now and again some of 695ST units. We also have some big customers in Oman who take the 695ST on a regular basis.” With the 570T and ST making up the bulk of

Chinese brand SDLG has used the backing of some of the best dealers in the GCC, such as Famco, and technology from its parent brand Volvo CE to power ahead in the region.

chassis… it allows that back end to move from one side to the other. With the patch planer on the back, you can plane a square area easily with the machine stopped in one place. It doesn’t have to reposition.” Switchable 2WS/4WS allows operators to travel safely on highways and then easily change

sales for the Case, however, Invernizzi says that the machine is able to play an “effective and main role” on construction sites, especially road projects, due to its productivity and durability while still coming in at a price point that makes it attractive for fleet owners. It also boasts a very practical in-cab working environment for the operator, with the capacity to accommodate helpers or extra personnel. “Customers looking for a simple, reliable and cost-effective tool will find that this machine matches their needs to the maximum,” Invernizzi says.

“The machine’s excavator performance excels from a harmony of linkage design, flowsharing hydraulics and ergonomic controls”

steer mode for manoeuvrability on-site. A three-speed hydrostatic transmission makes the 1CX Compact tool carrier an independent backhoe with a large working radius for optimum productivity. This means users are not reliant on other equipment to transport the machine.

No matter what the category of machine, if Caterpillar offers it in its product portfolio, it is a brand that is almost always among the top of the heap in that category – and backhoe loaders are no exception. Cat has consistently maintained its position among the best-selling backhoe loader brands in the region for a long time now and its portfolio of six models that it offers in the region finds use in various projects around the GCC. Mamoun Mutair, product manager, Building Construction and Paving, at Mohamed Abdulrahman Al-Bahar, the Cat dealer in the GCC, says that despite the slowdown in the market, the Cat-Al-Bahar combine is performing well enough to improve its market share year after year. Al-Bahar is one of the giants in the regional construction equipment landscape of the entire GCC and, as such, is an apt partner for Cat, the world’s biggest construction machinery company. Cat’s backhoe loaders have the same Cat DNA as the brand’s other equipment, which translates into robustness, durability and quality along with the versatility that a wide range of Cat tools and attachments provide, Mutair explains, adding that the Cat 426, 428, and 434 are the three main models in the line-up that Al-Bahar offers in the region. “The Cat 426, 428, and 434, are our bestselling models. They all share the advantage of Cat’s Variable Hydraulic (VH) pump and load sensing. They meet our customer requirements and come with different configurations for to various applications,” Mutair elaborates. “By offering these three major models in this market, we cover all applications related

47 to the backhoe loader sector, such as building construction, general construction, water and electricity projects, maintenance work and many others. Moreover, Cat backhoe loaders are compatible with a variety of work tools such as the new Cat® B-Series hammer and several other attachments, offering customers a wider range of applications they can use our backhoes for.” Taking his pick from the Cat backhoe loader line-up, Mutair adds: “Our new Cat 426 has proven itself in this market by offering various machine options, such as standard stick, extendable, general purpose and multipurpose buckets with forks. Its high digging depth and high break out force make it unique in the market. Thanks to another unique feature, the variable hydraulic pump, the 426 is able to save on fuel consumption while increasing the machine’s productivity at the same time. And then there is the ease of serviceability that Cat machines offer, which is what makes all Cat backhoe loaders stand out in the market and differentiate themselves from other brands.” Mutair adds that among the features that customers like in Cat backhoes is the sideshift concept. “The side-shift feature allows the machine to work right and left easily and it is feature that our customers commonly request in the GCC market. There is also another feature that Cat backhoes can come with – the centrepivot, but this is available as an option as it is not popular in the GCC market.” Speaking of options and features, he adds: “We have already introduced the new 426F2 in this market with different options and features. With an eye on the future, Cat regularly stays abreast

The backhoe loader is a favourite of budget conscious markets such as the Middle East because it combines two machines in one a versatile package for a variety of jobs.

of the latest technologies and developments in the equipment sector and has a track record of setting the trends. Our customers will soon find this out with the improvements coming to the 428/434 F2 series.” Volvo-owned Chinese brand SDLG’s backhoe range encompasses the BL61B and BL71B, and the brand is seeing increased market position in the Gulf, especially where it is propelled forward by powerhouse dealerships, such as FAMCO. According to SDLG, the BL61B’s pilot joysticks and front mechanical controls enable easy

control and manipulation of the bucket and other front attachments. The smooth steering along with a small turning radius provides excellent manoeuvrability on the jobsite. On the site, high breakout forces are delivered through a very durable loader linkage, and powerful hydraulics with precisely tuned controls enable efficient and productive loading, says SDLG, adding: “The machine’s excavator performance excels from a harmony of linkage design, flow-sharing hydraulics and ergonomic controls. An excavator-style boom employs an arched, ridged design that is narrow and tall, which allows excellent trench visibility and for working around buried obstructions.” Other features include large stabiliser feet for improved stability on soft ground. For those looking for a larger machine, the BL71B offers 16% greater lift capacity and 26% greater breakout force than its smaller sibling. Over at Bobcat, one of the later entrants to the backhoe loader segment, Gaby Rhayem, regional director, Middle East, says the compact machinery specialist is busy reinforcing its presence in the backhoe space, with the machine completing its portfolio of small machines, a segment in which it has an overall lead in the region. Bobcat offers four backhoe models, from those with only basic specifications to more sophisticated ones. It has been importing the 880, 883 and 888 models into the Middle East, specced for the climate and powered by a Perkins 94-100 HP engine and fuel consumption average of 8.0 litres/hour. “It’s only three years since we launched our backhoe and we’re bullish about it, investing in the machine for the future,” says Rhayem.

BOBCAt B730 & B750

twin stars in the mid-range Bobcat’s backhoe loader range comprises four models – the B700, B730, B750 and the top-of-the-line B780. While the B700 is an entry-level model, the top-of-the-range B780 is a highly-manoeuvrable machine with four equal sized wheels and is steered by three steering modes: 2-wheel steer, 4-wheel steer and crab steer. “The main sellers in the range, though, are the B730 and B750. In Saudi Arabia, the B750 is leading around 40% of the sales. Some customers who bought one machine from us have come back to place 2-3 repeat orders, which means they are very happy with their purchase,” says Gaby Rhayem. Powered by a 100hp turbocharged engine, driven through a standard

powershift transmission, and controlled by mechanical levers, the B730 model is equipped with 18-inch front tyres and two-wheel steer. Double loader bucket cylinders provide superior breakout force and reduce maintenance cost with bolt type cylinder head design. Apart from all the features of the B730, the B750 adds 20-inch front tyres and a hydraulic joystick control system. The standard 4.4l, four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine delivers 100hp of power. It also features a high-quality filtration system for longer life, and its single-side service components make maintenance easy.

“Because we were new to the category, we were expecting some issues with the machines after we launched in 2016, but our backhoes

have achieved the same reputation for reliability as the rest of our compact equipment range. Our engineering team is constantly monitoring the performance of the machines in the field with our customers, visiting them often, asking questions and observing the machines in action,” says Rhayem. “In three short years, we’ve become one of the largest sellers of backhoe loaders in the region, which has exceeded our expectations. This has also allowed us to continue our dominance in the overall compact equipment segment in terms of both unit sales and market share.”
