Sub EDITOR AELRED DOYLE

For those of you reading this in Munich at Bauma 2019, thank you for picking up a copy of Construction Machinery Middle East (CMME), the Middle East’s premier publication in the machinery and equipment sector. At CMME towers we’ve been looking forward to the latest edition of the definitive congregative event of our industry for some time now. And this year our association with Bauma has been a good, long one, which is set to continue. In January, CMME was the only Middle East publication invited to the Bauma Media Dialog at Messe Munchen, which included voting for this year’s Bauma Innovation Awards. After meeting with the industry, reviewing the nominations and casting our vote, we are now really excited to know the results to see whether we are on the same wavelength as industry peers and whether our choices match. The Media Dialog whetted our appetite for the event and since then CMME has carried extensive Bauma previews, the last of which is in this issue, giving a sneak peek of what to expect from the major brands at the show. Our coverage will now continue with post-event reviews and analyses, which look set to stretch into most of this year going by the expectation of a very eventful edition of Bauma in the offing in terms of releases of new machines and technologies. Let’s face it, our industry is not the most glamorous one in the world. Unlike, say, the consumer automobile or electronics industries, we do not have several annual shows around the world where manufacturers release swanky new models year after year. There is no Geneva or Detroit motor show in the world of equipment. But there is Bauma, where the industry converges once every three years, expresses

SALES ExECuTIvE

its love for the giant and small machines, and sets the tone for the next three years. In effect, the equipment sector renews itself with every edition of the show. As we look to chronicle this renewal, new readers of CMME in Munich will be able to find a snippet of the Middle Eastern equipment world on our pages. Last month, the global and the local converged for us in the region as the IPAF brought its annual summit and IAPAs to the Middle East for the first time ever. It afforded us the opportunity to interact with global thought leaders in the segment, such as with Genie president Matt Fearon, whose insightful comments we carry in this issue. We also had an instance of the local going global last month at the Middle East Electricity exhibition in Dubai, which has emerged as the world’s largest event in its sector. Elsewhere in this issue we look at how compressors are catering to the Middle East market and broaden your knowledge of our region’s crawler crane segment in the cover story. While we hope all this is interesting for both our regular readers and those from other regions of the globe who are encountering our magazine for the first time, we are under no illusion that the star of the moment is Bauma 2019. It’s show time!

Terex sells Demag brand to Tadano Terex Corporation has announced that it has agreed to sell its Demag Mobile Cranes business to Japanese crane product specialist Tadano Ltd for an enterprise value of approximately $215m. Included in the transaction are manufacturing facilities in Zweibrucken, Germany, and multiple sales and service locations. The sale, subject to government regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions, is targeted to close in mid-2019. The Demag Mobile Cranes business manufactures and sells all-terrain cranes and large crawler cranes. The Demag brand, resurrected by Terex at the last edition of Bauma in 2016, is an iconic brand in the field of both mobile and crawler cranes. “The Demag Mobile Cranes business has been part of our company for almost two decades and produces world-class products,” said John L. Garrison, Terex

chairman and CEO. “The dedicated Demag Mobile Cranes team members have made significant contributions to Terex and to the crane industry. The sale is based on strong industrial logic, as the Demag Mobile Cranes business will become part of a global crane company with complementary products and capabilities. We are pleased to have entered into this agreement with Tadano, a strategic buyer who values the Demag Mobile Cranes brand, technology, distribution network and team members.” A statement from Tadano said: “Through the acquisition of Demag, Tadano further seeks to meet customer needs with the addition of lattice-boom crawler cranes to our product line-up, as well as the enhancement of our line of all terrain cranes. We aim for a greatly expanded global presence as we strive toward our goal of becoming number one worldwide in the lifting equipment industry.”

Without skilful operators, worksites would stand still. And the fact is, that kind of skill only comes from on-the-job experience: in real situations, in the driver’s seat of machines we can all rely on. SDLG offered a two-day, expert training programme to help one lucky operator get even better – and 4,000 operators from all over Africa put their names forward. The winner, from Casablanca, Morocco, was taught theoretical and practical skills together with three colleagues; skills that will help them to become even more reliable on the worksite. Liebherr-France puts $5m into new facility

Liebherr-France SAS has opened a new assembly line in its factory in Colmar at a cost of $5.6m. The new line is based on the principles of lean management and will contribute to further improvements in quality and productivity, said the company. The main task of the new line is to produce the latest generation of Liebherr crawler excavators,

launched worldwide this year as Generation 8. The product range consists of the R 922, R 924, R 926, R 930, R 934, R 938 and R 945 models. According to Liebherr, with logistical means optimally geared for production, the new assembly line achieves average cycle times of 155 minutes per station with an output of five excavators each day.

Altogether, the R3 assembly line has 26 workstations and nine preassembly stations synchronised with the main line. With a workforce of over 1,500 employees and annual production of 2,000 machines, LiebherrFrance SAS in Colmar is the main production location for earthmoving crawler excavators in the Liebherr Group. The standard production range comprises around 30 crawler models, from the R 914 Compact to the R 980 SME for earthmoving work and mining. Production also includes machines for work such as demolition, material handling, maritime applications and tunnel construction, as well as electric excavators. The crawlers, with operating weights of 14-100t, have 90-420kW Liebherr engines.

World’s largest 3D printer Saudi-bound

Saudi construction company Elite for Construction & Development has placed an order with Danish 3D printing specialist COBOD for what is said to be the world’s largest 3D construction printer. The

BOD 2 is reportedly able to print buildings 12m in width, 27m in length and 9m in height, and can make three-storey buildings of 300sqm in area in one go. The drivers of the order are

said to be the modernisation of construction techniques under Saudi Vision 2030, and the need to build more than 1.5m new houses in the Kingdom over the next 10 years.

Henrik Lund-Nielsen, CEO of COBOD International, said: “We are very proud to receive this order from Saudi Arabia. Not only is the BOD2 the fastest 3D construction printer in the world, but the modular approach of the BOD2 allowed us to deliver the size that Elite for Construction & Development wanted – a printer capable of printing buildings of more than 300sqm.” The Middle East has previously seen activity in the 3D-printed building sphere. The use of 3D printing is growing in the region’s construction industry, with Dubai having demonstrated 3D-printed houses and structures, along with announcing plans for a quarter of all buildings in the city to be 3D-printed by 2030.

JCB bolsters automatic transfer panel range

JCB Power Products has announced a range of automatic transfer panels (ATP) from 25-400 amps, to support the delivery of reliable emergency back-up power. The ATP units automatically signal to a back-up generator to start on detection of a failure in mains power or a fluctuation in mains voltage or frequency. The units monitor both supplies and manage the safe switching of critical loads onto the generator supply.

The range adds to JCB’s current 25-3150 amps range, and mirrors JCB’s QS range of 20220kVA generators. Each panel is fully compatible with many other makes of generators equipped with a two-wire auto start system, making these units very versatile, according to JCB. With safety in mind, each ATP unit is housed in a heavy-duty IP35rated electrical enclosure for both increased personnel protection and protection against water ingress. The new models are wall-mountable for easy installation and equipped with large, non-ferrous gland plates for safe and easy installation of cables. Mechanical interlocks ensure separation of power supplies, while adjustable controller timings and limits prevent the generator starting unnecessarily if power quality dips.

KIT SPOTTING APRIL 2019 2016

WirTgen miller aT The fooT of monT Blanc

T

he Wirtgen W 220 large milling machine’s first job in Italy was not on a highway but on a winding northwest country road at the foot of Western Europe’s highest peak. This is where the powerful 777hp machine made its mark, milling the surface twice as fast as scheduled. The Strada Statale 26 (SS 26) stretches from the flat landscape of Piemont to the Alpine regions around Mont Blanc and includes a link to the Mont Blanc Tunnel. The road winds its way up to the Aosta Valley, reaching altitudes of almost 1,000m, with all sections heavily trafficked by both tourists and freight vehicles. It is used by an average of 5,000 vehicles per day. The road was due for rehabilitation in the summer of 2018. The 4cm-thick surface course was to be renewed across the entire

width along a 10km section. In some sections, rehabilitation of the 10cmthick binder course was due as well. Full road closures are extremely difficult to achieve in the Alps, and so only one side of the SS 26 was blocked at a time when the road was rehabilitated in July and August last year. But the Piemont-based contractor, Italfrese srl, one of Italy’s largest milling contractors, was able to shorten the construction period by using the W 220. This was partly due to the machine’s ability to mill across 2.2m in a single pass, meaning just two passes were required in most areas, rather than three. The milling machine operated at an advance rate of 28-30m/ min, even at inclines of around 5%. Ultimately, the contractor completed the milling work in just half the estimated time required for one of the smaller machines usually

used on confined sections such as those on the Alpine pass, without compromising on quality. Ernesto Franco and Emanuele Franco, MD and technical director of Italfrese, were well aware of the time savings when planning the job: “In the run-up, we investigated which of our 12 milling machines could complete this job as economically and quickly as possible. And the answer was the new W 220. Though the milling machine was operating at quite a high milling speed, it had not yet reached its technical limits. Immense engine power and sophisticated control systems enabled the machine to mill at a constant speed, even at higher altitudes and on hairpin bends – achieved while maintaining moderate fuel consumption.” Milling performances like these are achievable thanks to the excellent

power-to-weight ratio of the new W 220, Wirtgen says, with operating weight of 36.3t and engine output of 777hp. In addition, the powerful drive enables asphalt pavements to be removed not just layer by layer, levelling unevenness in the surface course or increasing the grip, but also by removing entire roadways down to a maximum milling depth of 350mm in a single pass. The Franco brothers agree: “This extra power often makes all the difference on large, time-critical projects at airports or on highways.” The power is harnessed intelligently, with Wirtgen’s intelligent ISC traction drive delivering optimum traction with electronic traction control, adapting the advance rate of the machine to the current engine load and regulating the current speed of the external and internal crawler tracks on bends.

A

s with the internet, unmanned aerial vehicles – sometimes referred to as UAVs, more commonly called drones – took off in the military environment, where they remained for a long time. But technology, more often than not, finds its way into everyday life. As a reflection of this, just a few years later we find drones firmly established in almost every discipline, including the construction industry, where their use has gone from a simple curiosity to a consolidated, powerful alternative for a huge array of job-site tasks. Drones are rapidly changing the way the construction industry works. Indeed, a 2016 report by Goldman Sachs stated that construction will be the biggest user of commercial drones in the coming years. The use of drones has proved extraordinarily useful in civil works that involve risk to people. As previously seen in the military field, costs would be very high or unaffordable if drones had not replaced

traditional means in carrying out several tasks. One of the most widespread uses of drones in the construction sector is the control and evaluation of the impact of work, in order to allow continuous monitoring. They can help to track progress, monitor materials, improve visibility and keep jobsites safe. Their ability to collect and report data allows them to help in completing work faster and providing a useful audit trail should problems arise, while also assisting in the process of resolution. There are two types of drone – fixed wing and rotary wing. The advantages of fixed wing drones are greater autonomy and speed. They are less noisy and more versatile in different climatic conditions. Although they are used successfully in sectors such as mining and large infrastructure, rotary wing drones dominate the construction sector. This is due to the possibilities they offer for vertical take-off and landing, as well as their ability to hover and stay stationary in flight. Rotary wing drones also offer greater manoeuvrability and precision, and are smaller. With the development of technology and falling prices, drones are showing great effectiveness in terms of possibility and accuracy in activities that would otherwise be impossible, such as passing

through the interiors of very deep cavities or remaining motionless in the air. Furthermore, they are a great ally of sustainability. Drones with video cameras are very useful in obtaining images quickly, especially over large tracts of land or huge works, thus reducing the emissions that would have come with the use of an air or ground craft. They are also of use in solar power plants and wind farms, allowing technicians to check malfunctions, material losses and technical failures without moving staff to each element of the installation, saving fuel and time. A clear example of drone technology applied to sustainability is the way Acciona uses them. Duties such as plant maintenance and monitoring of projects are already done by professionals who manage these devices, with great results. The use of drones is already a reality in the daily life of Acciona construction projects in the Middle East. Modern drones offer a wide range of possibilities in the construction field. Their versatility, ease of use, economy and precision make them a clearly advantageous option over traditional procedures, and with technology improving all the time, they look set to help the construction industry even more over the coming years.

T

he Middle East Electricity (MEE) 2019 show in Dubai last month saw a gathering of the global electricity and power generation industry in a fair that has evolved over the years to become one of the largest exhibitions in the world in its sector. In attendance were manufacturers and service providers from the power generation and engine sector from around the globe and the region. The biggest news by far where participation was concerned was the debut of JCB Power Products at the show. JCB has already etched its name on the region’s power generation and portable power sector with a track record of successful projects going back several years. At this edition of MEE, the company displayed its generator sets from several products lines, making the best of its reputation to attract a steady stream of visitors to its stand. Adam Snelson, GM, global sales, at JCB Power Products, says: “It’s the biggest opportunity globally to show our product and talk to new people and new customers The Middle East represents a huge part of our business and our growth plans, so when the opportunity came around this time, we thought it was the right time to come and debut at the show.” One interpretation of “the right time” is that the market is looking up for the British brand, we put to Snelson, who says: “The opportunity is huge and we wanted to expand our product range and the markets we are present in, so this show gives us the platform to be able to do that.” Explaining the peculiarities of the market, he adds: “In the standby market, what customers are looking for from our side is when that unit has to start - which might be once a year – they want to be able to trust that it’s actually going to work on that particular day. Cost then becomes a secondary discussion because it’s about trust in the brand and knowing that a machine is designed and tested to a level that at that critical time it will work smoothly.” JCB’s rental products focus on continuous power, where it’s all about

19 A highlight of this year’s Middle East Electricity in Dubai was JCB Power Products’ debut. Adam Snelson, GM, global sales, said the region is a big part of JCB’s growth plans.

Jcb expands s range with Middle east focus

“All our generators are tested to very high ambient conditions. We set a benchmark of 51 degrees ambient temperature. We know that because a product is sold here, it needs to be absolutely suitable for this market”

JCB Power Products has introduced seven new open set models in its S range of generators for the Middle East, all powered by Volvo diesel engines and featuring Mecc Alte alternators, Deep Sea Electronics (DSE) controllers and Schneider switchgear. Aimed at a wide range of industries in the Middle East and African markets, the range is offered in both 50Hz and 60Hz frequencies, with a standby output of 275kVA to 770kVA at 50Hz and 375kVA to 750kVA standby power at 60Hz. The new models will be powered by seven, 13 and 16-litre engines coupled with high-efficiency Mecc Alte alternators to deliver reliability and fuel efficiency, said JCB. “The engines provide smooth, low vibration operation, together with low noise levels, making (them) the ideal solution for installation into a noise sensitive location. Flexible exhaust bellows and a range of engine exhaust silencer options ensure easy integration of the generator into a plant room or other fixed installation,” said JCB. To provide strength and durability, a robust base frame has been designed with a 110% capacity bund and a drop-in fuel tank. To aid lifting and positioning, JCB has fitted integrated fork pockets and lifting points as standard. Monitoring of operational performance is done with a range of DSE controllers. A standardfit auto-start unit is good for both prime and standby use, while a DSE synchronising controller provides the flexibility to enable multiple units to be connected together to cope with peak electrical demands, as well as single machine mode to minimise fuel consumption. The models can be specified with JCB’s LiveLink telematics system, providing real-time location, maintenance and operating data.

uptime, he adds. “If that unit isn’t out working then it’s not earning. JCB understands rental very well - our big customers are rental houses. We have to deliver a product that gives them confidence it’s going to work all day every day.” JCB is known for high levels of in-house componentry in its products, sometimes touching 98% in its earthmovers. With generators, Snelson says, that is “a bit more difficult” but still adhered to wherever possible. “We definitely do that in our core range. The JCB Dieselmax engine covers from 60 kVA all the way to 200 kVA. We use the 4.4l, 4.8l and 7.2l Dieselmax engines, so that definitely the core and heart of the machine is JCB. It gives us an edge because it’s the same engine we fit in most of our construction equipment, so our dealers are very familiar with the product and our parts availability is very high. And, of course we use world-class components from outside where we don’t manufacture those parts, like Mecc Alte alternators.” But using in-house engines for all gensets is not possible, Snelson explains, and so, in its smaller 23-40 kVA range JCB uses Kohler, Volvo, Cummins and Scania engines. But whatever the engine, a JCB generator is tested to the same level, he explains. “All our generators are tested to very high ambient conditions. We set a benchmark of 51 degrees ambient temperature. We know that because a product is sold here, it needs to be absolutely suitable for this market.” At Kohler-SDMO, Philippe Forest, communications manager, says the brand has seen success in the Middle East recently “with big power plants”. Encouraged, the company

has brought new models to the show, among which is a big 1.5mW canopy unit with an in-house engine. Targeted mainly at back-up power, it also serves continuous power needs. “The engine is very compact. Thanks to it, we managed to put a 1.5mW unit in a canopy, which is unique. It is a key launch for us in this event. This is a 16-cylinder unit, but we also have 12-cylinder ones. And in 2020 we will launch a 20-cylinder engine,” Forrest says. “The Middle East is a very dynamic market for us and last year we managed to

get some very good projects and sales. For this new product, we had to reorganise our service network. Because these are highlevel products, we have to choose partners carefully to focus on this product. Our biggest partners in the Middle East were trained for this product and they invested a lot in the space, spare-parts and technicians. We also provide them full back-up from the new Kohler-SDMO central facility for the region set up in Sharjah last year, where we stock spare-parts and also have special repair facilities.”

staMford introduces two new alternators Cummins group company makes global launch of S7 and S9 model ranges offering increased power densities at higher kVA ratings Alternator manufacturer Stamford has launched two new products at the Middle East Electricity exhibition being held in Dubai. The Cummins groups brand, which is a major alternator supplier on the global market, made the worldwide launch of its S7 and S9 alternator ranges on the first day of the show. Both new alternators were displayed publicly for the first time in the world at the exhibition. According to Stamford,

the S-Range programme was launched in 2016 “as a strategic initiative to reclaim market share in an increasingly competitive low kVA market”. The two new models answer the demands from the market for increased power densities further up the kVA range. “Designed using CoreCooling Technologies, the Low Voltage S7 delivers high power density with continuous ratings up to 2.5MVA thanks to enhanced thermal management within the machine. This optimisation also helps reduce machine dimensions and weight,” said Scott Strudwick, director, global sales and marketing at Stamford. The compact design gives

ease of integration into existing generating sets and brings with it upgraded Automatic Voltage Regulator options plus an overall design package that offers improved field serviceability, he added. “The S9 is a High Voltage product that comes with true Class H insultation technology. Designed, tested and validated over an extended period in partnership with insulation material supplier Von Roll, at component, subsystem and at whole machine levels, this new system can run continuously at Class H ratings of up to 5,000kVA, 13.8kV, whilst still delivering high resistance to the mechanical and thermal stresses.”

afety, productivity, the importance of training, telematics and digitisation, the incorporation of building information modelling in powered access and effective service – these were some of the extensive range of topics covered at the annual global summit of the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) in Dubai last month. The event, held for the first time in the Middle East, took place at the Radisson Blu Dubai Deira Creek Hotel and included the International Awards for Powered Access (IAPAs), which honour excellence and best practices in the powered access industry. The event concluded the next day with delegates visiting the Dubai depot of regional powered access rental powerhouse Manlift. Jointly organised by the IPAF and the KHL Group publication Access International, the IPAF Summit 2019 saw a congregation of more than 300 top global professionals in the powered access industry. Speakers included some of the top global experts in the powered access industry: Matt Fearon, Genie president, Terex AWP; Jim Colvin, president & CEO, Serious Labs; Peter Schrader, MD/COO, Zeppelin Rental Germany; Erhan Acar, GM, Rent Rise, Turkey; Benjamin Legg, Corporate VP, AECOM; Mohsen Ahmad, CEO Logistics District, Dubai South; and Darren Williams, head of Technical and Operations, Spider Access LLC and vice chairman, IRATA Middle East, Central and Southern Asia.

Participants from the IPAF included Giles Councell, director of Operations; Andrew Delahunt, director of Technical and Safety; Richard Whiting, GM, UK market; and Tim Whiteman, CEO and MD of IPAF. In an entire day of presentations on various topics related to the powered access sector, the most relevant for the Middle East audience was perhaps a UAE panel discussion titled ‘Is your company ready for 2020?’. The panellists were Dean Jones, GM, AJI Heavy Equipment Rental; David King, group MD, Manlift Group; Alexis Potter, regional director, UAE & Oman, Rapid Access Middle East & International; and Nick Selley, group business development director, AFI Group. Opening the panel discussion, Manlift’s King said: “Our objective is to deliver quality service on a consistent basis. We all make commitments to our clients in order to win business based on price and full complements of machine and service quality guarantees, making decisions pertaining to safety, training and the age and quality of machines. “We should embrace the fourth industrial revolution, which is right upon us now. At Manlift, our preparation for 2020 is evolving continuously and we have developed a system of operation called the Manlift Way – a system of continuous improvement in which we have identified key areas in both operation and commercial activities to facilitate KPI-driven processes that help deliver a high level of customer experience. We recently created our own app development team, where we have started to create some great tools for both internal and external customer use. In effect, we have created our own high-tech environment which will benefit the organisation and customers globally.” Potter of Rapid Access added: “I think fleets are

ready for The fuTure CMME caught up with Matt Fearon, Genie president, Terex AWP, on the sidelines of the IPAF Summit in Dubai last month for some crystal ball gazing on where the powered access sector and his company are headed. With the growth in electric equipment and telematic solutions, what does the future of the powered access sector look like? I think the future looks exciting as far as technologies and machines are concerned. I believe there are some big changes coming to the way that machines operate, particularly through electric and hybrid technology. People are moving towards electric and hybrid power. I think this is because as we have gone through the different diesel engine tier requirements, the engines have gotten more expensive, more complicated and less friendly for rental fleets. So, what we chose to do is develop ‘Fuel Electric’ (FE) - Genie’s hybrid. In my humble opinion, we have the best hybrid on the market. I say that cautiously, but we have done our homework on the Z-60/37 FE, for example. We have had the machines out there for several years and our approach to the electric and hybrid models is no compromise on specifications. In other words, their four-wheel drive performance is as good or better; their cold-weather performance is as good or better; they will work in all climates, including the very hot, dusty and difficult climate here in the Middle East. We make sure that rental companies can derive full use of these machines around the world, regardless of the weather or other conditions. So there has been an emphasis on moving away from the higher tiers of the diesel engines. When you move to the scissor lift families, you are also seeing a migration towards electric drive. There have been huge improvements in battery technology, which is going to make a big difference. We have been paying attention for many years to make

“I think the future looks exciting as far as technologies and machines are concerned. I believe there are some big changes coming to the way that machines operate” sure we know when it is the right time for these batteries. And to me it looks like we are getting very close. How close are we? Can we gauge that at Bauma? Indeed we can. One of the things you will see at Bauma is our lithium battery pack for Genie scissor lifts. This is exciting because we don’t show technologies that we don’t think are ready to go into rental fleets. So it’s very deliberate that we are showing it now, because we believe that battery costs are going to come down too, when you think from the point of view of the rental company’s total cost of ownership of a machine. This is a huge deal for a rental company. They’re also environmentally more sound, they charge faster and the relative size of the battery shrinks, allowing ease of packaging into a machine so everything about it is better. And when you look at the cost, it’s taken several years for the price point to come down to

where it is viable for the market. What about charging and the availability of power at job-sites? Can powered access machines use quick-charge technologies and work with small batteries for lower machine weight, as has been tried successfully with earthmoving machines and other equipment? I think there is still more development required for charging stations. This is because aerial work platforms are used in so many diverse applications when compared to other types of equipment that it is difficult at this point to envisage construction sites installing the types of charging stations that will work for the AWPs. There are many factors that need to be looked at – such as the charging cable or locating the charging point at the right spot. But we have the technology required from the machine standpoint ready to go, so we have been paying attention to where electric cars are

going or what’s happening with the plug-ins for electric cars. We think the most effective solution at the moment is our FE technology. So we have chosen to put the FE technology in, but we can strip the engine off that without a problem if the charging technology starts to progress and we feel like we are in a position to take advantage of it. I think right now, the applications for AWP rental fleets are so diverse. They put a machine on a job-site for two months and then move it to another site where it may do a different kind of job. If they get the machine there and it cannot be plugged in, then the financial returns are just not going to happen. It depends a lot on the available infrastructure, as far as the availability of electricity and charging goes. We are paying attention to it but It will only come up in stages. the Middle East is a region where long booms and diesel units are preferred, and people are slow moving into other fuel sources. What’s your prediction about when this region will switch over, as it will inevitably have to? I think it will. When I look at the Middle East, I feel it is progressing and the acceptance of new technology is growing. Sure, everybody is comfortable with the diesel-powered boom lifts, but as we come out with non-diesel machines that have that same performance, I think they will be open to it. Noise will also have a part to play in this, more than emissions. Construction sites are very noisy. Diesel engines are very noisy. So if a machine does the same work and is quieter, and you can flip the engine on only when you need to charge it, I do think they will accept it. With the large AWPs, when you start getting up over 100 feet – for example in the bigger booms popular here – the move to electric will take a little longer because of the charging capability needed for a machine like that. But I don’t see a reason why they wouldn’t be accepted here.

25 going to evolve and the power sources for equipment are going to change. As a company in the UAE, we have been really investing heavily over the last few years in electric and hybrid equipment. What we have also seen is that as the market matures, our businesses will become more transactional. I think we are ready for 2020 if we maintain a core focus on safety and technology like we have been doing for the 20 years that we have been here.” The IAPAs, presented at an evening function in the same venue after the daylong summit, had a total of 13 categories with a shortlist of more than 46 nominees – companies, products, technologies and people from across the world in the powered access industry. According to IPAF, the judging panel comprised “independent and impartial” experts, who “spent a full day considering the more than 100 entries received… judges made decisions based on the merit of each entry and were excluded from entering their company for any award.” The 2019 judges were Sergio Kariya, president, Brazil-based Mills Estruturas e Servicos de Engenharia; Teresa Kee, director, Corporate Safety at US-based United Rentals; Karin Nars, executive chairman at Finland-

In the self-propelled booms and atrium lifts category, Italy’s Almac won Product of the Year for its Jibbi 1250 Evo tracked boom, praised for its “great versatility and attention to operator safety”. Skyjack won the Innovative Technology award with its Elevate On app, while JLG bagged the IAPA in the Digital Development category with its BIM library. China’s Dingli was recognised in the Powered Access Pioneer category, and the judging panel said: “Since 2005, Dingli’s influence has grown worldwide. Its growth in its home market of China has placed it at the centre of efforts to introduce modern access equipment, improving safety for countless workers on-site.” The contributions of JLG founder John L. Grove were also recognised with the IPAF/ Access International Lifetime Achievement Award. “He’s a legendary figure in the industry and played a key role in the inception of the platform access business. As 2019 sees the 50th anniversary of JLG (which he cofounded), now feels timely to award this longoverdue accolade,” said the panel.

thE futurE is now

Headlining Case Construction Equipment’s participation in Bauma this year is its new combined steering system for Case graders – an industry first. Case will unveil the patented feature which combines the industry-standard controls for the front wheel and frame articulation angle of a grader into one function, managed through either the joystick or the steering wheel. Combined steering is a unique technology that uses a network of angular sensors to provide steering feedback to the vehicle control unit. It can be activated when required and used in conjunction with variable steering ratios to adapt to site conditions. For job-sites requiring tight turns in confined spaces, combined steering can be supplemented by the wheel lean function. The feature can be activated at the touch of a button, making driving and grading tasks easier. When not required, wheel lean can be disconnected from the combined steering, leaving wheel steering angle and frame articulation moving simultaneously. Another highlight of the Case stand will be its new compact wheel loaders with electrohydraulic controls. With more than 20 sensors and 20 electrohydraulic actuators installed on the machine, Case says this new technology will improve operator controllability, provide the option to select different operating modes and allow combined movements. Operators will have greater control over the hydraulic speed for both travel and unloading. Other refinements to compact wheel loaders that Case will show off include a new hydraulic quick coupler for better visibility in load operations and new fork frames and buckets for increased rollback angle and greater load retention at high speeds.

The focus for Volvo CE at Bauma this year is future technologies, including electric machines, and new launches and updates of excavators, haulers and other kit. Volvo CE will be joined at Bauma 2019 by sister companies Volvo Penta, Volvo Trucks and Volvo Financial Services. Under the theme ‘Building Tomorrow’, Volvo’s 2,293sqm indoor stand in Hall C6 and 5,870sqm outdoor stand at FM714 will have interactive performances featuring the company’s complete product and service portfolio. Bauma 2019 is the first major industry event since Volvo’s recent announcement of going electric on its compact excavators and compact wheel loaders in 2020, making it the first equipment manufacturer to commit to an electric future for its compact machine range. The first two hydraulic-electric machines will be unveiled at Bauma, followed by a staged marketby-market introduction and ramp-up in 2020. Excavators will also star on the Swedish heavyweight’s display, continuing the company’s worldwide ‘Excavators For Any Challenge’ campaign. New excavators launched at the show will include the all-important 20t EC200E and the EC15-EC20E compact excavators. There will also be the new EC750E high-reach demolition excavator, the EC300E Hybrid hydraulic-hybrid excavator and an EC220E that features Volvo Active Control automated boom and bucket movements for more efficient digging. In all, there will be 50 machines on Volvo’s two stands, grouped into sub-themes of ‘load’, ‘dig’, ‘haul’, ‘pave’ and ‘service’. There will also be an Innovation Area – while the exact details are still under wraps, automation, connectivity and electromobility are expected to be in the spotlight.

Hitachi Construction Machinery (HCME) is coming to Bauma 2019 with more than 30 machines on show. The Japanese giant will showcase a wide range of products and services at stand FN/718, including several new Zaxis-6 mini excavators and compact wheel loaders, the ZX210X-6 ICT hydraulic excavator and new special application machines. With a 6,495sqm display, HCME’s most prominent offering will be a broad selection of the latest Zaxis-6 mini and compact excavators, from the ZX17U-6 to the ZX65USB-6, and the ZW75-6 and ZW95-6 compact wheel loaders, which have been updated to comply with Stage V emissions requirements. They will be joined by Hitachi’s first ICT hydraulic excavator with machine control in Europe, the ZX210X-6. Unveiled recently by HCME, it is designed for accuracy and easy operation and can enable projects to be completed up to 50% faster than standard excavators, says the company. Included in the Hitachi line-up is the new ZX210LC-6 super long front excavator, the ZX135US-6 with telescopic arm and the ZX135US-6 with sliding arm. These are some of the smaller models in the special application range of Hitachi construction machinery, factory-modified to meet the demands of specific activities such as slope finishing and deep excavation. Visitors to Hitachi’s stand will also enjoy testing their skills on a dump truck simulator and getting a virtual view of some selected Hitachi machines. They will also be able to download a dedicated Bauma app in advance to ensure that they have the best experience at the Hitachi stand.

31 Klaus Dittrich, chairman and CEO of Messe München, the organisers of Bauma, says: “The industry is booming, which is also reflected in the growth of Bauma. We’ve taken account of the rise in demand and expanded our site in eastern Munich to 614,000sqm. “Our aim is to offer a platform to as many exhibitors as possible. With Bauma 2019, we continue to surpass ourselves.” Exhibition director Mareile Kaestner adds: “For Bauma 2019, we decided to select Canada as our partner country. Canada is one of the world’s most important markets for the international construction machinery, building material plant and mining machine industry. It is the world’s seventh biggest construction machinery market. I’m sure Bauma 2019 will offer good insights into the Canadian market. “Our trade fair grounds were recently completed. In addition to increasing the exhibition space, we have also optimised the structure of the content so that visitors can find their way around the fair better.” Expanded to 18 halls, the exhibition will feature indoor space of 200,000sqm. Construction machinery will be extended to five halls. Additional areas in the north

outdoor area and to the north of Halls C4 and C5 are available for this. Lifting equipment is in a new area in Hall C4. The exhibition area for components has also increased to five halls. Formwork and scaffolding will now be in Hall B3 and also in the larger north outdoor area. Thanks to the clear division into the individual exhibition sectors, as well as a new map of the fairground, visitors can be managed in a more targeted way. With two new halls together covering 20,000sqm, Bauma will provide space for more exhibitors than in 2016, when 3,425 exhibitors took part. Digital topics from the industry will be shown in Hall A2. The special ‘Think Big’ show has been moved to the Internationales Congress Center München (ICM) adjoining the trade fair facilities at Riem. As a result, the area for construction equipment and

tools has expanded in Hall B0 – the location of the digital construction site at Bauma Virtual Experience. At Bauma 2019, visitors will be able to experience the digital construction site with the help of virtual and augmented reality. For the first time, companies can even present themselves completely digitally. The Virtual Experience offers completely new opportunities in the areas of planning and development, advanced training and sales. Anyone wanting to train their apprentices under realistic conditions – in machine maintenance, for example – or looking to explain the inner workings of a crane to a customer no longer has to even leave the site. “With the help of our new products, we also want to pass the 600,000-visitor mark and extend our status as the world’s biggest trade fair,” Dittrich concludes.

01 start with a plan Every lift is different, and it is important to review load weight capacities, integrity of equipment, possible wind effects, terrain and surroundings, and other factors. The operator, riggers and other workers involved with the lift should be part of that planning process.

Certified operators Safety-conscious contractors and owners set a uniform standard on job-sites that requires operators, riggers and other personnel to be trained and certified to an acceptable level of competence and safety. A crane in the hands of an unqualified operator can be a deadly weapon. Riggers should also be properly trained on setting the crane up for the specific load and circumstances.

regular inspeCtion Check operating functions before every use to ensure that everything is working properly and there are no defects or cracks in the support members. Also verify that the crane has received its annual inspection. With small incremental pushes beyond their limits every so often, stresses that build up in crane components can result in sudden accidents if not detected early.

stay attentive On plenty of sites you can see operators talking on mobile phones while moving the crane, napping between lifts or distracted in other ways that have the potential to create danger for their fellow workers. Everyone associated with a crane needs to stay alert and focused on the job at hand – especially on difficult lifts.

plan for the swing The counterweight and boom travel within a specific arc called the swing radius. It’s important to ensure that the area within that radius is barricaded off, and to establish a control zone for those authorised to work in the immediate area. Also check the area to ensure there are no objects the boom might strike, such as power lines.

stay in touCh Whether you use radios, air horns or hand signals, there needs to be clear communication between the operator and other workers. That’s especially critical for a lift in which the operator cannot see the load, such as when the load is being lifted over a high structure and delivered on the other side. Don’t assume everyone knows how instructions will be communicated – follow specific guidelines to make sure everyone on-site is familiar with all signals.

09 avoid man-baskets Sometimes the easiest way to put workers where they’re needed seems to be to lift a man-basket to the work area. However, that approach creates hazards that must be tested and addressed before work begins, such as providing proper fall protection. A crane is for lifting objects. For people, use a powered access machine.

07 10 no misuse Cranes are designed for vertical lifting, but some crews try to use them for side loading or other improper activities. Using a crane to drag something across the ground or from under an obstacle puts extreme stress on the boom, the turntable and all the structural members. It could potentially weaken key components and lead to failure.

W

ith a steady stream of lifting jobs required in sectors ranging from petrochemicals, port and infrastructure to high-rise construction and leisure facilities, the heavy lift sector in the Middle East finds the tracks of its crawler cranes turning continually and their booms rising high. It’s the nature of the beast that crawler cranes are seldom owned and almost always rented, usually from specialist crane services outfits that provide not only the machines but also the people who operate them, and usually planning and execution of the lifting jobs from beginning to end. Therefore, while the big manufacturers – Liebherr, Manitowoc, Terex, HSC Cranes and their ilk – actually design and produce the cranes, the crane service providers and rental outfits are of vital importance in their actual use. And in the Middle East, that has led to the emergence of home-grown crane service companies that have become brands in themselves. One such is Al Faris, a 26-year-old Dubai-headquartered company currently operating across the MENA region with more than 3,000 employees and offices in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. “We are a family-owned business founded in 1992. With more than 25 years of experience in the MENA region, we provide state-of-the-

art lifting and transport equipment for safe, innovative and reliable solutions in heavy lifting and transport,” says Kieve Pinto, director, Al Faris Equipment Rentals. “We offer our clients turnkey solutions to today’s heavy lifting and abnormal transport challenges, including alternative lifting methods, with careful planning and delivery. We have played an integral role in the construction of numerous iconic projects, such as the Riyadh Metro, the Dubai Metro, the Dubai Mall, Dubai International Airport, Palm Jumeirah and the Burj Khalifa, as well as served the largest industries in the region, such as the Dubai Dry Docks and Jebel Ali Free Zone among others, which have cemented our position as industry leaders and established us as a trusted partner in the region.” Describing the current state of the heavy lift sector in the region, he adds: “There is definitely a gradual increase in the Middle East for heavy lift jobs. With Dubai gearing up for the Expo 2020, the projects for the event are seeing demand for heavy lifting. Saudi Arabia, too, has seen a rise in the number of lifting jobs for large-scale power plant projects as well as for oil & gas sector lifts.” Commenting specifically on crawler cranes, he adds: “There is a steady demand for crawlers in the 100-600t capacity range to serve both civil and the oil & gas industries. Heavier crawler cranes above 600t are required in the coal and gas-powered power plants, desalination, refinery, petrochemical and nuclear plants to lift extremely heavy vessels, reactors and turbines. “With the boom in architecture and design

39 The Middle East has a host of heavy lift requirements in the oil & gas, construction, port and infrastructure sectors, making it fertile territory for lattice boom crawler cranes.

“With the boom in architecture and design of astonishing projects in the Middle East that are pushing the limits of engineering... there is a big demand for cranes that can be mobilised to lift a variety of very heavy loads”

of astonishing projects in the Middle East that are pushing the limits of engineering to go bigger in shorter time frames, there is a big demand for cranes that can be mobilised to lift a variety of very heavy structures and loads.” Al Faris’ fleet comprises 60 lattice boom crawlers from 50t to 1,000t, making it wellequipped to meet this demand. The fleet is meticulously looked-after to ensure it remains in peak condition for all tasks. “All equipment needs a bit of tender loving care, and we are all about giving them all the care we can. To do this, we have a new, state-of-the-art facility in Dubai with qualified technicians working to international standards for service and maintenance,” Pinto says. Most crawlers in the al Faris fleet are from Liebherr and the 1000t crawler from the German brand has seen some exciting action in the region of late. “Our Liebherr 1000t crawler crane - with extended counter weights fitted - was used for the construction of the UAE pavilion on the EXPO 2020 site. Al Faris was sub-contracted to carry out complex lifts of pre-fabricated structures for the spectacular design of the UAE pavilion which is inspired by a falcon in flight. These lifts were complex and needed co-ordination across the entire site. Our team of engineers, technicians, supervisors, crane operators and riggers were all present on site working together to carry out the operations smoothly with the utmost quality and safety,” says Pinto. The Liebherr 1000t crawler has also served his company in several other lifts in ports, in shutdown and maintenance projects at big power plants, lifting generators and others. Al Faris recently achieved a top global position in the International Cranes’ IC50 list. Commenting on this, Pinto says: “Our main aim has always been to provide our customers with lifting equipment that lead the way in terms of quality, technology and safety. With ever growing technological advancements, we ensure we keep our fleet updated, catering to industry requirements and customer demands. We are proud to have the biggest fleet in the Middle East region and continue to strive to be the best in quality and safety. The credit for the IC50 achievement goes to all our employees for their hard work over the years, and to our suppliers. One such supplier is Terex with its Demag branded crawlers. Now, the buzz in the industry is about the sale of Demag to Tadano and how that will impact existing and future Demag customers. Damien Bizjak, associate marketing manager, Global Marketing, at Terex Cranes, tells CMME: “The sale of Demag Mobile Cranes to Tadano is good for our customers, team members and

shareholders - creating a combined company that is stronger together, with a common core business of lifting. There is strong industrial logic for bringing these two complementary businesses together - combining Tadano’s 100 years of experience with Demag Mobile Cranes’ nearly two centuries will create a lifting company capable of bringing new leadership to the industry and continuing to create innovative lifting solutions. “Terex remains committed to supporting all of our customers’ businesses with parts

Existing support contacts and procedures will remain in place.” While an event such as this can be disruptive in the industry, major players in the Middle East are not too perturbed. Pinto of Al Faris, which has some 650t Demag CC 3800-1 models in its fleet, makes light of the news, saying: “We generally have a good relationship with all our

According to a statement from the manufacturer, an agreement was signed by Hitachi Construction Machinery Middle East Corporation (HMEC) and ATEC on January 28th under which the Saudi company has been appointed the sole supplier for HSC’s crane products and services “to penetrate

the market for heavy lifting” in the kingdom. “ATEC is a proud member of the ZMS group of companies, with their roots dating back over 50 years. The ZMS group has always proudly represented world class brands. HSC is the latest world-renowned brand to be added to the portfolio. ATEC-HMEC are confident they will team up in strong way together,” said the statement. ATEC has its main branches in Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam, and also offers service

and parts support from 11 other strategically located branches throughout the kingdom. The statement added that ATEC prides itself on its benchmarksetting aftersales service supported by factory trained technicians. Tony Nuyts, GM, Aertssen Machinery Services, Abu Dhabi, says: “Our first impression is very positive. Tadano and Demag are both strong brands in their market segment that can only become stronger if they combine in a smart way. The future may show that our first impression was correct.” A global name, Belgium-based Aertssen recently opened its new premises in Abu Dhabi (see box) and took delivery of new Demag cranes for its Middle East operations. Describing the Middle East fleet, Nuyts says: “We have two brands of crawler cranes: HSC from 40-280t and Terex from 400-650t. Beside the Terex cranes we also invested in several units of HSC cranes recently.” While continuing fleet expansions, he feels there is room for improvement in the Middle East market. “The regional market last year was a challenge with competition, price pressure and specially payment behaviour from clients. We hope that a least the flow of payments will improve very soon.” One of the brands that comprise Aertssen’s crane fleet, HSC, has found good traction in the Middle East market. With several lattice boom crawler crane models in its range in capacities ranging from 55-550t, HSC Cranes’ reputation for Japanese quality has always kept it among the most noted in its sector both worldwide and in the region. Wim Aernouts, director, Middle East Crane Equipment Trading (MECET), HSC’s regional dealer, says with new launches last year and

steady demand, the company is continuing to perform well in the Middle East. The Japanese heavyweight saw a major new development in the region in the first quarter of this year when it announced a partnership with ATEC in Saudi Arabia to distribute its crawler cranes in the country (see box). Piet van Bakergem, GM, Hitachi Construction Machinery Middle East (HMEC), says ATEC’s philosophy matches its own customer focused outlook of high levels of service and effectiveness, yet simplicity in design. This outlook led the company to make a corporate restructuring between the owners Sumitomo Heavy Industries Construction Crane Co.Ltd (SHI) and Hitachi Construction Machinery (HCM) in 2017, leading to a rebranding Hitachi-Sumitomo to HSC Cranes. HSC’s line-up starts from the 55t SCX550E crawler and goes all the way up to the 6000SLX in the 500t class. Its latest launch early last year was an 80t lattice boom crawler that expanded its SCX E-series. The model – the SCX800E – has a maximum lift capacity of 80t at a 3.2m radius, sports a maximum main boom length of 54.5m and is powered by a 140kW engine. Such machines are leading the charge for HSC Cranes in the Middle East, Aernouts says. “Among the important customers who have gone in for HSC Cranes is Aertssen, together with Johnson Arabia and many others, who count projects like the Dubai Metro’s underconstruction 2020 line among major jobs. “In this region, we are already an entrenched player in the crawler cranes segment. Last year was a good one for us, continuing on

the success of the year before, and we sold several crawler cranes,” says Aernouts. “Our sales have been well spread out throughout the GCC. Some of our crane customers are in the Duqum port project in Oman and its associated infrastructure works. Another customer has recently transferred his entire fleet from Qatar to Kuwait and is in talks with us for more units, which will be based in Kuwait’s Ruwais area. “We have also done brisk business with our smaller crawler cranes for foundation jobs.

entire team,” says Tony Nuyts. What started 10 years ago with prospection in the region by Manuel Aertssen and Tony Nuyts, AMS is now expanded into a growing company with more than 100 cranes, trucks and trailers, five branches in the Middle East and more than 200 employees. Building their own workshop and associated offices with a surface of 2,000sqm is therefore a milestone. Characteristic of the office building is the similarity with the head office in Belgium. “We chose to cherish our Flemish roots and had the

façade built with identical bricks as at the headquarters in Stabroek,” says Greg Aertssen, CEO of the Aertssen Group. The red carpet was rolled out for 250 customers, suppliers and employees. The Aertssen family was well represented, one of them the CEO of the Aertssen group, Greg Aertssen. In his speech he referred to the cradle in Flanders: “We are convinced that the Flemish know-how with a focus on quality and safety in combination with local expertise distinguishes AMS from the competition. We are here to stay.”

The SCX550 and the 70t SCX700E are two such models which have found favour in this sector. Our best-seller in the region, however, remains the SCX2800, a 280t model. Recent deliveries of the model include one to the Johnson Group last year.” Van Bakergem mentions that HMEC is expecting the business in Saudi Arabia to pick up with the addition of a strong partner like ATEC to HSC’s dedicated distributor list to defend and grow its market share in the Kingdom with a strong sales and service

deMAg cc 3800-1 stAnds tAll When three 72m-long, 130t spud legs were required to be lifted off a barge at the UAE’s Hamriyah shipyard, a Demag CC 3800-1 proved to be the perfect machine for the project. The crane was operated by Al Faris, who were awarded the project in which the lift site was located 82km from their location in Dubai Industrial City. So, the crane first had to be transported to the work site. “Once we determined all the required parameters for the three lifts, we decided

that our CC 3800-1 was the best possible fit for the job,” says Hillary Pinto. The company’s own lowbed trailers needed a good 10 hours to complete the journey to the site, where Al Faris’ own all-terrain cranes were used to set up the CC 3800-1. Al Faris used 10 of their specialised team members to get the crane ready to operate. The team decided on a configuration with a 108m-long main boom and a 36m-long Superlift mast. The central ballast

network. “All in all, the future looks bright.” Meanwhile, at Manitowoc Cranes, David Semple, senior vice president, Mobile Cranes Asia and the Middle East, says: “Our full range of crawler cranes is available for sale here, from 100-650t and featuring several trademark technologies, including our Variable Position Counterweight (VPC). This patented and unique design is centred around a moving counterweight that is automatically positioned at different radii depending on lift requirements and the angle of the boom. With

totalled 50t, the Superlift counterweight 325t and the counterweight on the superstructure 165t. Once set up this way, the CC 3800-1 was ready to lift the three spud legs with a gross weight of 130t each at a maximum radius of 50m, swing them to the side, and then set them in place with the help of a 150t crawler crane. The CC 3800-1 only used 68% of its available rated capacity, helped by the Superlift Split Tray, which enables easy uncoupling of the counterweight.

Dubai-based Al Faris has one of the largest fleets of giant crawler cranes in the Middle East and has executed several difficult lifts in infrastructre, port and other sectors.

VPC, less counterweight is required than with more traditional crawler crane options, which saves time and money during the transport and assembly phase. It also means groundbearing pressure is lower, and less ground preparation is required in advance of work starting. VPC is available on both the 300t MLC 300 and the 650t MLC 650. “In terms of digital technology, two relatively recent introductions for Manitowoc crawler cranes include CCS, our Crane Control System, and CraneSTAR, our remote

diagnostics and telematics application. Cranes with CCS benefit from smoother movements and easier operation, while CraneSTAR allows customers to view vital statistics - and get alerts - on the performance of their fleet from any internet-enabled device.” In global terms, though, the Middle East remains a relatively small market for Manitowoc. “However, we do have a number of loyal customers, particularly in specialised sectors, such as fabricators for offshore rigs,” Semple signs off.

liebherr crAwler powers through A Liebherr LR 11000 lattice boom crawler crane performed 12 heavy lifts of generators of various sizes at a power plant project in Dubai. When Al Faris was awarded the project, which included executing the 12 lifts in confined spaces between structures with the largest piece weighing 404t, the company chose the Liebherr LR 11000 after careful consideration and calculations. The cranes strength and capacity, along with its various boom

configurations made it the ideal crane for a demanding heavy lift at heights such as this one, Al Faris concluded. The lift was planned and carried out by their team of trained and qualified experts. All technical support documentation, execution plans and schedules were prepared inhouse. This helped organise all activities from beginning to end and kept delays to a minimum, ultimately safely lifting the generators in confined spaces. HSE practices on site were also discussed in detail with the

client prior to the operation. The crane was assembled with the required ballast weight and slung with the heavy-duty webbing belts chosen in the lift plan. A team of planning engineers, heavy lift managers and supervisor were all present on site to ensure a safe, efficient lift. The 1000T crawler crane was used with SDWB2 configuration (main boom – 48m, luffer – 30m) while lifting the 404t generator, which was one of the most impressive lift jobs by a single crane for Al Faris.

Compressors APRIL 2019

As German compressor specialist Kaeser marks a 100 years this year, it has emerged as a leader in the Middle East in the two decades it has spent in the region.

Kaeser mobilair m55 and m59

New staNdards iN the 5mÂł raNge A new basic body, new motors meeting European and North American exhaust regulations, a lightweight version, with polyethylene gull-wing doors, and a wide range of options, including compressed air treatment and generators for simultaneous production of compressed air and electric power: the new Kubota and Hatz powered Mobilair M55 and M59 portable compressors have it all. And thanks to the pXv control, large pressure ranges can be covered with one and the same system.

With the pXy control, familiar from larger Mobilair models, the infinitely adjustable maximum pressure (p) directly influences the maximum flow rate (v). Thanks to this flexible control system, it is equally possible to operate a breaker at a maximum pressure of 7bar or perform sandblasting work at 10bar. The pressure setting using the time-tested Sigma Control Smart controller is easy and convenient – like the system start-up.

To compensate for the extra weight of the required diesel particulate filter while continuing to offer a portable compressor with an optional aftercooler and a large enough fuel tank for a full day’s work

onsite, Kaeser adopted a new approach to lightweight construction. Aluminium offers weight savings as compared with polyethylene with no loss of robustness or longterm value retention.

The M59 is also available on request with a chassis fitted with an overrun brake. That is used, for example, when the user opts for a generator or compressed air treatment equipment with a filter combination for oil-free compressed air. For the first time, noise protection is handled by gull-wing doors made of rotationmoulded polyethylene. In both versions: two large gull-wing doors provide perfect access to all service locations.

everal international manufacturers count the Middle East among their most important markets globally for portable power units and are responding to the market’s demand for the latest and best products. One such manufacturer is Doosan Portable Power (DPP), part of the South Korea’s Doosan Infracore Construction Equipment, which has had a long and successful association with the region, with Its machines visible on many construction sites here. Another manufacturer with a big interest in the region is Kaiser Kompressoren. The German company remains upbeat about its prospects in the region’s compressor segment in a year when it is celebrating its centenary, says Carl Briden, regional director for the Middle East. “Kaeser has been able to carve a niche for itself in the Middle East over the last two decades and more, and now we are capitalising on our brand recognition here. Overall, Kaeser’s recent performance has been good, with promising results in some GCC countries, though there are indicators the market is slowing down a little in others. On the whole, it can be said that we have slightly improved our market share when compared to the past few years, with the aid of value-added services.” For Kaeser, German technology and quality are among the big selling points,.and Briden points out: “Kaeser compressors offers value for money in terms of total cost of ownership with long product life cycle achieved by high quality manufacturing. Kaeser’s attention to detail, reputation for strong reliable products, which are all made in Germany, make customers’ decision making easier.”

Kaesaer’s plus points include improved fuel efficiency and reduced carbon foot prints. Also, even though Tier 2 engines are sufficient for the region, Kaeser has already introduced Tier 3 ones for all its models in the GCC, which have been well received because of their efficiency. The models sold by Kaesar in the region are from its MOBILAR range, which is suitable for the unique conditions in the Middle East. “All Kaeser MOBILAR screw compressors are designed to operate in ambient temperatures of 50 degrees Celsius, so no additional modifications are necessary to ensure our units run reliably in this region,” says Briden. “Kaeser believes in continually developing new models and upgrading existing ones to meet the customer’s changing requirements. A case in point is our successfully introduction of the M500 oil-free portable compressor for the oil & gas sector. Our research and development team in Germany is able to react quickly to new trends and ensure our products exactly match the needs of our customers.” DPP, meanwhile, depends on one of the most comprehensive ranges of portable compressors in the Middle East to remain among the top brands in the region. The Korean giant’s offering includes models for construction, rental, utilities and manufacturing to quarrying, drilling and the oil and gas industry, with free air deliveries from 2.0 to 45 m3/min at output pressures from 100 to 350 psig (7 to 25 bar). As well as a wide selection of Tier 3 High Ambient models, the range also includes several Tier 1 or Tier 2 engined models, well suited to the fuel quality levels found in the region. “All Doosan compressors are built to withstand the rigours of everyday applications in the toughest conditions,” Hazem Elnaqeeb, district manager, portable power Middle East, at DPP, tells CMME. Among DPP’s smallest Tier 2 models is the compact C185WKUB-EX-T2, which offers easy towability and

transportation, and high manoeuvrability for use in confined areas. It has a free air delivery of 5.2 m³/min, operates at a working pressure of 100 psig (7 bar) and is aimed at standard applications in construction. “Powered by a Kubota engine, the model features an aerodynamic single-piece, light and lockable canopy made of ultra-strong composite material. Its cool-box airflow design allows cool air to enter through the rear and wash over the internal components, keeping temperatures low. As a result, the compressor is fit for use in hot climates such as those in the Middle East,” explains Elnaqeeb. For high purity applications, such as

pharmaceutical, food preparation, petroleum, instrumental quality air and nuclear power plant back-up, DPP’s NHP1500WCU T3 oil-free diesel model provides 42.5m³/min of 100% oil-free compressed air, he adds. A brand making inroads in the Middle East market is Italy’s Rotair. Jayanthan Ramasamy, sales manager, Middle East, says Rotair has been present in the region since 2000. “Currently our products are being promoted through a network of competent distributors assuring high standards of sales and service support. Last year we saw sales triple compared to the year before and 2019 will see an even deeper cooperation with our distributors to enter new segments.” Rotair sells a wide range diesel, petrol and hydraulic driven models in the region, Jayanthan explains. All Middle East models are tropicalised and specifically adapted to the tough conditions in terms of cooling, filtration, exposure to heat and humidity. The Rotair range has diesel driven models from 25 to 900 CFM / 7 to 15 bar, exclusive sandblasting models with inbuilt aftercooler and moisture separator, utility compressors of 100 - 185 CFM / 7 bar for service vans and trucks, petrol driven models

from 25 to 75 CFM / 7 to 13 bar with some special ones for fibre optic cable laying, and hydraulic models of 40 to 250 CFM / 7 to 13 bar to provide compressed air on excavators. “The 185 CFM / 7 bar is the most commonly used model across the world and the MiddleEast is no exception. For sand blasting the 388 CFM / 10 bar and 800 CFM / 10 bar are most commonly used,” Jayanthan reveals. “After-sales support is an important component in any equipment and Rotair understands the importance of strong aftersales organisation. Our personnel regularly conduct trainings for distributors to refresh product knowledge and get to know new models. Currently there are 90-plus Rotair trained sales and after-sales personnel in the GCC. The focus is to have them ready for the fastest solution to all possible requirements.” Among Rotair’s recent launches are utility compressors for service trucks. The range is covered by models from 100-185 cfm, powered by Kubota engines.
