It has been quite clear for a while now to people in the industry that the job-site of the future will be electric and unmanned. Using electric machines will lead to the elimination of emissions at job-sites, leading to a cleaner environment as well as the ability to work closer to habitation. Being unmanned will cut out injuries and human errors, while enabling higher productivity and speedier work through automation – for, machines in any sphere will always outperform humans eventually. That eventuality, however, has already arrived – in a freezing and blustery Swedish quarry outside Gothenburg. The Vikan Kross quarry, owned by Swedish construction and development company Skanska, was for ten months the theatre where the future of the job-site unfolded. An army of electric Volvo CE machines, some unmanned, moved the blasted rock to a crusher and then took the crushed aggregate away for stockpiling. Involved in the process were an electric excavator, a hybrid wheel loader and several automated electric load carriers, besides of course the on-site electric crusher. And a tower crane to feed an electric cable straight into the heart of the excavator’s motor from on top. The exercise – Electric Site - was part of a joint research project by Volvo CE, Skanska, two Swedish universities and the Swedish government to run a cleaner and greener quarry and increase efficiency in the process. And the results after ten months of running the operations were astounding. When Volvo CE presented them to the global media at a special event hosted right in the quarry, with a sprawling view of the Electric Site to boot, the announcement of “a 98% reduction in carbon emissions, a 70% reduction in energy cost and a 40% reduction in operator cost” took many by

surprise, yours truly included. To know the details, turn to our cover story on page 22. The electric theme continues in this issue with a quick look at few major players in the generator sector and their models and offerings. Also, compact equipment specialist Wacker Neuson tells us about its operations in the Middle East, including a new electric mini excavator it has brought to the region. We also present our pick from among the new equipment models launched last year, choosing the ones we think have the potential to make the biggest impact on the Middle East market. There is also a look at the winning partnership between Saudi Arabia’s General Trading and Equipment Company, an illustrious Bobcat dealer, and its close relationship with its principal. Finally, by the time you read this, CMME will have returned from the Bauma Media Dialog in Munich, where I was invited by the organisers of our sector’s definitive trade fair. Also part of the invitation is the opportunity to vote in the Bauma Innovation Award – an honour for your favourite magazine. Based on what I learn at the event, I look forward to giving you a comprehensive overview of Bauma 2019 in the next issue. Stay glued!

In reference to the ‘Red Sea megaproject gets approval from board of directors’ article on your website, we’ve seen many conflicting sides to the ‘new’ Saudi Arabia over the past couple of years that it can sometimes be unclear which vision of its future self we should believe. I am, however, looking to the Kingdom to lead the next phase of construction in the region, especially once the Expo 2020 Dubai building is complete. Saudi’s current willingness to embrace leisure and tourism, as well as trade, should be welcomed by all of us in the industry. While the ambition and scale is exciting, the test will be whether those at the top are willing to be transparent and open enough to get the international support they need to make their mega-projects sustainable. If they are, then the region’s construction industry can afford to be much more positive about the future.

n order to lift a blower weighing approximately 2t onto the roof of Montparnasse Station in Paris for its customer Axima, crane service provider Ponticelli Frères had to face a whole series of challenges: little space, the need to navigate a tricky traffic situation in the metropolis, and an incredibly small window of time to complete the lift. The company decided that its Terex AC 500-2 crane was the best choice to tackle all these challenges. Even before the lift, the company had to overcome a whole series of bureaucratic obstacles. “We had lots of discussions with SNCF, Paris public transportation operator RATP, the Department of Motor Vehicles and the city council in order to agree on the best way to get the crane to the worksite and operate it there,” explains Louis-Arthur de Quatrebarbes, Ponticelli project manager for the Assembly and Lifts unit. This is not surprising, as the undertaking was enormously complex. For example, bus lanes and pedestrian walkways around the work-site had to be temporarily rerouted. In addition, the tight space conditions at the site made it necessary to precisely organise everything down to the very last detail and prepare an elaborate site map for all components and loads. Just getting the crane to the work-site at the back of Montparnasse Station took meticulous planning as well: “We drove the AC 500-2 from our branch office south of Paris to the site within an hour on Sunday night. To save time, we used two teams with seven assembly technicians to set up the crane. A total of 12 trucks were
required to transport all attachments and crane accessories, as well as the required 180t counterweight,” de Quatrebarbes reports. In line with the conditions at the site, the AC 500-2 had to be configured to lift loads of up to 5t at a radius of 96m to a maximum height of 85m. “To achieve this, we set it up with a WIHI-SSL configuration with a luffing fly jib and with the full counterweight,” explains crane operator Jeoffray Lefort, who specialises on “large crane heavyload lifts” with the AC 500 and AC 700 cranes at Ponticelli. In order to get the crane ready for the lift, the two assembly teams required the help of a 100t assist crane and two days, including a night shift. The fact that the AC 500-2 was set up so quickly had plenty to do with its ease of assembly, but also with the proven expertise of the Ponticelli team. For the actual lifts, the team was beefed up to a total of 12. For the constrained space conditions, Ponticelli wanted to use a 500t crane. In order to use the maximum crane capacity, the smallest hook block possible was chosen. Ponticelli made sure to check with Terex Cranes whether it was technically possible to forego the use of the standard hook with three-part reeving for the lift and instead use a smaller hook with two-part reeving. “Once we got the green light from Terex Cranes, there was nothing in the way of using the AC 500-2, and we were able to forego using a bigger crane,” says de Quatrebarbes. This made it possible to successfully complete this extraordinary project in Paris in a mere week.

DEALER FOCUS FEBRUARY 2019
I
n the world of machinery, the relationship between a manufacturer and its dealer is one that is as important as it is taken for granted. No matter how high the performance and innovation level of a company’s products, there is little chance it will succeed in any market based solely on the quality of its manufacturing. Having the right partner is the factor that decides success or failure. The big brands know this all too well. Take any major global name in the construction equipment sector and pick any market where it is successful – and you will find its dealer in that market is a brand by itself in that territory. Bobcat knows this all too well. The compact equipment specialist, which has consistently outdone its rivals in the Middle East in annual sales, counts as its dealers some of the biggest names in the business in all the regional markets it operates in. Be it the Kanoo Group in the UAE and Bahrain, OTRAC in Egypt, Jaidah in Qatar, Bahrah in Kuwait or International in Oman, all of Bobcat’s dealers in the GCC are commercial behemoths in their own respective markets. The same can be said for General Trading and Equipment Company (GTE), Bobcat’s dealer in Saudi Arabia. Established in 1976, GTE has since become a leading construction equipment and building systems solutions provider playing a pivotal role in the development of Saudi Arabia’s infrastructure. Its experience and technical knowhow adds value to the products its provides, supports, and services. A professional outfit with extensive knowledge, GTE has a staff and engineers dedicated to giving the best possible support to the brands it represents. Among its construction equipment offerings, it has extensive knowledge in compact, multi-functional earth-moving equipment such as skid-steer loaders, excavators, telescopic handlers, and such others. Attachments, road and ground compactors, mobile power and lighting units and access equipment are among its other product lines. “We offer a wide range of products for businesses in Saudi Arabia, with Bobcat as the jewel in our crown,” says Shams Elramly, director, GTE. “Our construction systems include complete solutions for Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC), factories (manufacturing equipment,

We can inspect and evaluate your existing equipment to provide the best services for your needs. We have built our reputation on fulfilling our customers’ needs for sales, rentals and service. How this reputation helps both GTE and Bobcat can best be seem through an anecdote that Elramly narrates: “GTE is a trusted name in the Saudi equipment sector for decades now and when Bobcat was about to introduce its backhoe loader to the Middle East in 2016, customers listened to us when we told them about the new machine. Through the goodwill GTE had in the market, we were able to sell the very first eight units of Bobcat’s backhoe production from the factory directly to our customers in Saudi Arabia. This was when Bobcat hadn’t even printed the brochures for its new backhoes yet, leave alone having a demonstration unit. “We were able to sell the BHL just on world-of-mouth publicity and on the customers’ trust in GTE and Bobcat in the Kingdom. And very soon we were at the No.3 spot in the market, in the very first
year that the machine was introduced.” Elramly adds that GTE has now been selling Bobcat’s BHL in Saudi for more than two years and “we still haven’t been able to do a proper formal launch of the machine’. The reason, he says, is that it is so much in demand that “we never have enough units in stock to be able to do a proper launch function, which will require us to have around 50 units available”. This enviable reputation in the market has been carved with decades of hard work and dedication, Elramly explains. “We are representing Bobcat since 1976 and now we

are the oldest dealer for Bobcat in the world. We cover the whole of Saudi Arabia with our branches in Jeddah, Madinah, Makkah, Abha, Khobar, Jubail and a branch and an outlet in Riyadh. And we are planning to open another in the Qasim area. We will also soon open another branch in Jeddah and we are on the verge of opening our headquarters in Khobar.” At one point in time, when the Saudi economy was booming, GTE had the distinction of being Bobcat’s biggest dealer worldwide in terms of sales. “We were selling huge numbers, something to
17 the tune of 1500 machines per year. We were the biggest dealer in the world for Bobcat for four years from 2014 onwards, until the Saudi economy hit the downturn,” Elramly points out, adding that he does see encouraging signs on the horizon and expects the market to start coming back in 2019 followed by a even better 2020 in Saudi Arabia on the back of new projects and spending announced by the Kingdom. Turning to GTW again, he says that the company advocates a hands-on culture, whereby traditional channels and modes of communication are bypassed for an equal and performance-based evaluation of roles, responsibilities, tasks, and authority. “This has led us to having the most knowledgeable staff among our peers and is a platform for the generation of innovative and creative solutions that are required in our modern day. We cultivate an ethical and principled culture which represents our commitment to professionalism, innovation, and change.” Bobcat’s regional director for the Middle East, Gaby Rhayem, is firm in his belief that to sell the first machine to any customer is the easiest task for a manufacturer. The difficult task is to keep the customer coming back for more.

CMME catches up with Manhal al-chalabi, regional general Manager, Middle east & north africa, at wacker neuson, to ask what the gerMan coMpact equipMent specialist is doing in the Middle east to reinforce its global leadership position in the segMent it operates in
How has Wacker Neuson performed in the Middle East in recent times and what do you think is the market perception about the brand? Wacker Neuson is among the global leaders in construction equipment and a specialist where compact and small equipment is concerned. Our brand stands for quality, innovation and precision German engineering globally, and our well-earned reputation over many years precedes us in every market we go to. The Middle East is no exception. We have good market share for all Wacker Neuson product ranges in every market throughout the region. In 2017-18, we were able to maintain our market share in all Middle Eastern countries we are present in, despite general sluggishness in the region’s economy. What are your expectations for the immediate and medium-term future in the Middle East? And what have you done to maintain your market share in a slowing market? The construction equipment sector, just like the entire construction sector, is cautiously optimistic - but in a wait-and-watch mode. The year 2019 has just started, so we will see in the next few weeks and months how the year develops. Some big projects in the region are nearing completion and some others are at the starting phase, waiting to be tendered out soon. Our customers have had very good experiences using our products and equipment, and we expect them to consider us for upcoming projects also in 2019. Please mention some important recent projects in the Middle East that Wacker Neuson equipment is associated with. Wacker Neuson machines can be seen working on the job-sites of several of the biggest and most prestigious infrastructure projects in the Middle East, such as the Expo 2020 site in Dubai and in the city’s Metro railway expansion project. Our machines are also working in another Metro project in the region – the Riyadh Metro in Saudi Arabia. Moving to the aviation field, Wacker Neuson equipment is

swinging without a tail Wacker Neuson says its EZ36 has been designed around the operator with a view to increase productivity. “Our new zero tail-swing compact excavator, the EZ36, is a popular machine in the Middle East. Its externally located guide rollers as well as an optimised weight distribution give the excavator an extremely high level of stability, in particular for lifting heavy loads,” says Manhal Al-Chalabi. “Up to four additional control circuits are available from the factory and make the excavator a versatile
tool carrier. The clear allaround visibility of the work area and the attachment is indispensable for safe and quick work on the job-site. “ The new design of the EZ36 offers an ideal line-of-sight, he adds. Thanks to the standard two-part front windshield, the operator can adjust the cabin to his construction site situation in a few easy steps. “The operator can affix the lower and upper parts of the window under the cab roof. This not only facilitates the ventilation of the cabin, but the separate removal and cumbersome storage of
also in use at the Kuwait and Bahrain airports in various jobs. The feedback from our customers has been positive. Upon using our products, they realise why the Wacker Neuson brand stands for reliability and they’ve appreciated the quality, performance and durability of our equipment in all these projects. Please describe your range of equipment available in the Middle East market. Wacker Neuson sells its complete product
the lower front window is also omitted, and the windows are better protected from damage. “The power of the air conditioner was increased so that the cabin can be cooled to 16 degrees below exterior temperatures,” Al-Chalabi adds. The biggest draw of the EZ36 of course remains its zero-tail feature. The EZ36 has no rear overhang and can swing conveniently - even in the smallest of spaces when it gets tight, with no fear of damaging impacts of a swinging tail.
range in the Middle East region, which means small construction equipment and compact equipment. The product line-up is very broad and reaches from concrete technology, compaction and demolition equipment, generators, lighting and pumps to wheel loaders, telehandlers and excavators of up to the 15t capacity class. We consider this breadth of offering to be a unique strength of Wacker Neuson, as we can cover almost the whole gamut of small to big construction sites.
A global leader in the compact and mini equipment sector, Wacker Neuson has an very wide product offering and is now also pushing its electric equipment in the Middle East.
What are some of the most popular Wacker Neuson models or product lines in the Middle East? Our concrete equipment and road making equipment have both proven popular in the Middle East and carved out a niche in the market. Wacker Neuson machines such as plate compactors and rollers are sought after by contractors and fleet owners in the region for their quality, precision and high uptimes. Some of our newly-introduced and updated product lines have also been very well received in the Middle East, such as our light towers and new compact excavator. Please describe these new machines that Wacker Neuson has introduced globally and in the Middle East region. Our range of light towers has recently been updated and is now available also with fuelsaving LED technology. The flexible, compact LTS and the robust LTE light towers combine small dimensions and high performance successfully. Work on construction sites often extends late into the evenings or happens after nightfall, especially when it comes to road and bridge construction, concreting or such other applications, and in particular when working in warmer conditions such as in the Middle East summer. A reliable light source is indispensable for these operations. Wacker Neuson’s new LTS and LTE light towers emulate daylight very closely in their light quality, free of shadowing. We have also recently launched a new zero tail-swing compact excavator model in the 3.5t class, the EZ36, which we have introduced in
21 a tracked dumper in the Middle East market.
the Middle East. The time-tested and proven features of larger Wacker Neuson models were consistently developed further in the EZ36. A completely new design and interior as well as additional outfitting options provide for a productive and fatigue-free working environment. The new excavator EZ36 is characterized by quick work cycles as well as particularly precise and efficient work. This is made possible by optimised hydraulics and the re-engineered motor-pump management. The EZ36 was designed as a zero-tail excavator without any rear overhang, specifically suitable for work in confined or congested construction sites, which are frequently in urban areas. The machine’s design ensures that the operator does not have to worry about damaging it or blocking any traffic while working. The rear of the compact EZ36 excavator does not protrude over the undercarriage, while at the same time the cabin interior is designed to be spacious and ergonomic. Wacker Neuson has come out with an allelectric range of compact machinery. What were the factors behind this development and what are the prospects of these machines in the Middle East? The problem of emissions, especially in innercity areas, will become increasingly acute with time. With our completely emission-free machine solutions, customers are always on the safe side. At the same time, it is important for us only to introduce a product if it can withstand an average working day with one battery charge and if the cost of purchasing
How does Wacker Neuson take care of the service and spare parts in the region? Wacker Neuson works very intensely with its dealer network to enhance the after-sales, service and spare parts business through regular trainings, updates and visits to keep strong relationships and partnerships in business relations. This is a very important aspect of Wacker Neuson’s operations and its customers, who can experience for themselves how closely the company works with its dealers.
the machine can be recovered within three years at the latest. Our line-up of zeroemission electric equipment is a result of adhering to this policy. Customers in the Middle East are just starting to become aware of our zeroemission range. We are one of the first movers in this aspect in the region and we see ourselves as innovators where emissionfree products in the region are concerned. Today, we offer two battery-driven vibratory plates, an electrically driven wheel loader and
Wacker Neuson has updated its light tower range to LED technology. The company’s LTE and LTS light towers emulate natural daylight very closely in their light quality.
Please give a short overview of Wacker Neuson’s plans for Bauma 2019. At Bauma 2019, the Wacker Neuson Group will take visitors on an electrifying journey through the international group’s extensive range of products and services. The zero-emission machines will be among the main highlights on our stand. At Bauma 2019, the Wacker Neuson Group will take up a huge outdoor stand for the first time, displaying its products on the almost 6,000sqm booth FN.915. With this the Group is offering visitors the largest stand in the construction machinery sector in the event’s Northern Outdoor Area. The stand will be designed as an electrifying world of experiences. Visitors can not only look forward to the exhibition of new machines but can also experience them live in action at a large demonstration area. Spectators can also turn machine testers at an interactive test area with numerous digital stations inviting them for a virtual experience.

coMpaction without eMission Innovative and new in Wacker Neuson’s zero emission series is the AP1850e, a single direction, batterypowered vibratory plate. In addition to traditional compaction work of granular soils or asphalt and the vibration of paving stones, it also facilitates work indoors and other emissionsensitive areas, such as in trenches and shoring. The battery-powered vibratory plate is also suitable for application in water protection areas,
where no equipment with internal combustion engines can be used. “With the new zero emission vibratory plate, we significantly increase the economic efficiency of our customers, because they can use the same battery to operate the vibratory plate and the battery rammer from Wacker Neuson,” says Manhal Al-Chalabi. “We worked closely together with our customers during the development process of the AP1850e battery-powered vibratory plate at our production
base in Germany, which is now paying off. One requirement that companies and end-users have for an emission-free vibratory plate is, for example, that they can be used for a whole workday without recharging - and we can offer this with the AP1850e.” The battery system used was developed inhouse by Wacker Neuson and has been specially designed for application on vibrating machines and for tough construction site conditions, AlChalabi explains.

short drive away from Sweden’s second city of Gothenburg lies Vikan Kross quarry, a collection of shrub-covered rocky undulations and low hills that would have sat unremarkably on the face of the Swedish countryside if untouched by man. Instead, Swedish construction and development major, Skanska, which owns the quarry, has pockmarked it extensively with blast hole and carved entire hillsides away to form the aggregate that makes up numerous roads, buildings and infrastructure installations in the country, leaving the landscape ravined and forbidding. On a cold and windy November morning, a posse of international media people and others were bused into this site by Volvo Construction Equipment, which was soon going to transform in importance from the unremarkable to the groundbreaking. For, in the nest few hours, Volvo CE, Skanska and their partners revealed how that seemingly normal looking quarry had been the stage for the past 10 months of a play of such importance that it could well decide how job-sites operated in the future. In a day of presentations, top officials and researchers from Volvo CE, Skanska, the Swedish Energy Agency and two Swedish universities – Linköping University and Mälardalen University – revealed the Electric

from proof of ConCEpt to working prototypE The HX2 is the further development of Volvo’s HX1 prototype which it first showed off at the company’s Xploration Forum in September 2016. Since then, Volvo engineers have been developing the machine. And while it may still look similar on the outside, it’s completely different on the inside, the company says. “The HX2 is fundamentally different to the HX1,” says Uwe Müller, Volvo CE’s chief project manager for the electric site project. “The HX1 was proof
of concept. Once we knew it was feasible we updated the design requirements for the HX2 to incorporate shared technologies and components from the Volvo Group, such as electric motors, batteries and power electronics. Integrating a completely new drivetrain was crucial to take full advantage of the groundbreaking electromobility developments that are happening inside the Volvo Group. Another new feature is the addition of a vision system, which
allows the machine to detect humans and obstacles in its vicinity.” “Volvo CE is committed to pushing boundaries and exploring the technology of the future,” says Jenny Elfsberg, the company’s director of emerging technologies. “The HX2 and the electric site project demonstrate how Volvo CE wants to work with its customers early in the development phase to improve total site performance and sustainability, while also saving customers money.

Site research project and its findings. Last year, Volvo CE and its customer Skanska ran a test of the viability of its Electric Site concept quarry. The system, which incorporates electric and autonomous Volvo machines, ran in a real production environment for 10 weeks with the aim of realising certain set targets for emission reduction and cost of operations. The actual result was even better than anticipated, and the gathered audience heard that over its operational period the Electric Site quarry had achieved a 98% reduction in carbon emissions, a 70% reduction in energy cost and a 40% reduction in operator cost. According to Volvo, the results also indicate that the Electric Site project are a big step towards helping it “achieve its future vision where work sites are ten times more efficient, with zero accidents, zero unplanned stops and zero emissions”. Drawing on the electromobility and automation expertise of the Volvo Group, the research project, aimed to electrify each transport stage in a quarry

– from excavation to primary crushing, and transport to secondary crushing – although a small amount of diesel power was still used. With the Electric Site, Volvo CE and Skanska aimed to achieve the same output as Skanska’s usual equipment but with up to 95% lower carbon emissions and up to 25% lower total cost of operations. Gunnar Hagman, CEO, Skanska Sweden, says: “This is the first time that anything like this has been attempted in the quarrying industry… Electric Site could serve as a blueprint for transforming the efficiency,

safety and environmental impact of quarries around the world.” With Skanska taking care of the project’s logistics, Volvo’s responsibility was to develop the new concept machines autonomous and electric equipment, work methods and site management systems which together made for a complete solution. Melker Jernberg, president, Volvo CE, says: “We had to completely rethink the way we work and how we look upon machine efficiency – pushing the boundaries of our competence. The total site solution we developed together

with Skanska is not a commercial solution for sale today and we will evaluate the outcome of the tests, but we have learnt so much already, elements of which will be fed into our future product development.” Where Skanska would have traditionally used three rigid haulers to transport the aggregate, eight smaller prototype Volvo HX2 autonomous, battery-electric load carriers were used take the material from the primary mobile crusher up to the secondary static one. Volvo already had the technology for the HX2, which was an advancement on the HX1 that first broke cover at the Volvo Exploration Forum in 2016. Volvo CE’s Uwe Müller, chief project manager for Electric Site, explains that once the HX1 concept was found workable it was updated to the HX2, integrating completely new systems and components to fit the requirements of the Electric Site project The primary crusher on the Skanska site is loaded by the 70t dual-powered, cableconnected EX1 excavator prototype, which was being shown by Volvo for the first time. The base machine for the EX1 is a Volvo EC750 model, upgraded to incorporate an electric motor in addition to the diesel engine. “To fit the new components in the machine without increasing its size required a significant amount of repackaging work,” Müller explained. “However, in terms of the operator interface and controls, nothing has changed – it’s operated in exactly the same way as a conventional Volvo excavator. If the cable is
connected, the machine will automatically start in electric mode and in diesel mode if not.” A vexing problem that Volvo CE engineers admitted to at the Electric Site event was the lack of availability of batteries powerful enough to power an excavator. While small and light autonomous loaders could run all day on battery power with burst of charging at intervals, the battery power needed to power a heavy excavator and its digging and loading functions would have been so heavy as to make it impossible for the excavator to move. An ingenious solution was to use an

overhead cable going straight into the EX1’s electric motor. To allow for an adequate working radius for the excavator and to ensure that the power cable remained clear of the danger of coming in contact with elements of the quarry, a tower crane was used to link it to the machine, the crane’s jib length offering an adequate working radius to the excavator to move the few metres it required to for digging up the material and loading it on the primary crusher. The company’s concern for the environment has seen it come up with several electric and hybrid machine concepts that have consistently pushed the bar further in environmentfriendly construction kit. And now Volvo has announced it will launch an electric range of its compact wheel loaders and compact excavators starting next year, becoming the first equipment manufacturer to go electric in its small machines
Volvo says the move follows an overwhelmingly favourable reaction from the market after the successful unveiling of several concept machines in recent years. The move is also in line with the Volvo Group’s strategy of focusing on electromobility in all its business areas. Volvo said the electric range it will launch from around mid-2020 will include electric compact excavators (EC15 to EC27) and wheel loaders (L20 to L28), while new diesel engine-based development of these models will be stopped. The first electric machines in the proposed
range will be unveiled at Bauma this year, followed by a marketby-market introduction and ramp up in 2020. While Volvo feels diesel combustion still remains the most appropriate power source for its larger machines, the current level of electric propulsion and battery technology is suitable for its smaller equipment. “Volvo CE is delivering on its commitment of ‘Building Tomorrow’ by driving leadership in electromobility and delivering sustainable solutions that support customer success,” says Melker Jernberg.

But, to localise, what does such an epoch-making step by Volvo mean for the conservative Middle Eastern job-sites, which are not know for acceptance new technology with open arms? Carl Slotte, Volvo CE’s president of sales region EMEA, explains: “The beauty of this concept is that it does not need a very mature market to work. I think it can work in both the mature markets as well as in emerging market environments. Of course, you need to have the infrastructure and the competence in place to be able to make a project like this workable. But all the savings possibilities and the efficiency possibilities are as applicable in the Middle East as elsewhere. “The key aspect is to have a mindset that is receptive to such technology and here the stakeholders of projects need to demand such solutions that not only offer potential savings but also safety and environmental benefits. In the Middle East we have the beauty of solar power to make such a project even greener. So it is a universal project.”

s our readers are no doubt aware, 2019 is a Bauma year. This usually means the big brands in the machinery world have been hatching plans for some time to let their new releases loose at Munich in April, which also usually makes them hunker down and pull the shutters on new launches in the year before the big show. Not this time, though. Last year saw quite a few manufacturers induct seminal products into their line-ups or bring them to the Middle East – products with the potential to be definitive for both the brand and the market. CMME picks the five 2018 introductions that we think are the most important and consequential. These are a mix of products introduced both on the global stage and the regional. While Volvo’s brand-new rigid hauler and Caterpillar’s Next Gen 36t excavator both have global importance – with the former slightly more important for lesser regulated markets – the Bobcat telehandler and the UD Trucks Quester for construction are both targeted at the Middle East. The JCB Teleskid, meanwhile, is still awaited on our shores, but we expect it to carve a niche for itself as soon as it touches down here.

In October 2017, Caterpillar flew in key partners from around the world and the global construction trade press to its Learning and Demonstration Centre in the Malaga, Spain, to launch what it called a “game changer” – its Next Generation of 20t excavators. At the launch, global marketing manager Herwig Peschl told the assembly: “Game changing is what we’re about. We keep investing into our products and services to make sure we satisfy our customers by giving them what they have been asking for.” He added that Cat was revamping its hydraulic excavator (HEX) line and bringing in the Next Gen machines. It was the turn of the 36t class of Cat’s HEX to go to Next Gen last year with the new 336 and 336 GC. At the 20t excavator launch, the mantra was 45-25-15. “Up to 45% improvement in efficiency, up to 25% reduction in fuel consumption, and up to 15% maintenance cost reduction – this is game changing,” Peschl had said. And now, when it’s the
turn of the 36-tonners, the mantra seems to be 45-1515: up to 45% improvement in efficiency, up to 15% more fuel efficiency, and up to 15% reduction in maintenance costs. “The new 336 GC combines the right balance of productivity features with reduced fuel consumption and maintenance costs. The result is high reliability and low-cost-perhour performance. The new Cat 336 has the industry’s highest level of standard factory-equipped technology to boost productivity. Integrated Cat Connect Technology increases operating efficiency by up to 45% over traditional operations,” says Cat statement. It adds that the excavators produce more work per unit of fuel than the models they are replacing — up to 15% more fuel efficiency for the 336. Contributing to the 15% reduction in maintenance costs is the cooling system, with an on-demand fan to maintain correct operating temperatures – which the Middle East will particularly like. ud truCks Quester For ConstruCtion In a testament to the importance of the Middle East market and its unique conditions, Japanese heavy truck manufacturer UD Trucks chose to design a heavy construction truck range for the region, unveiling it in May last year. The new Quester models for heavy construction are the Quester 6x4R 40t and 8x4R 41t with hub reduction, designed, sourced and manufactured for customers in the Middle East and other growth markets. According to Mourad Hedna, president, UD Trucks Middle East, East and North Africa, the Quester range was developed with a Japanese hands-on, field-oriented approach established on a customer and factory floor perspective. It performs impressively, provides good value and satisfies owners’ expectations in every

aspect. Most importantly, the Quester for construction is built and refined based on insights from customers’ day-to-day needs and cuttingedge know-how gained from UD Trucks’ experience in Middle East and the global footprint of the Volvo Group, its parent organisation. Unveiling the trucks at a special launch event in the UAE’s Ras Al Khaimah in May, Hedna told the assembled audience: “We are very excited about the arrival of the Quester 6x4R-40T and 8x4R, which complete the Quester model range line-up. The Middle East conditions are tough, with the varied terrain, high temperatures and payloads. To ensure the new models meet the needs of our customers, we tested the model in real conditions for over a year [in the region].
We are confident that the now complete range of Quester, with its proven fuel-efficient engines and UD Trucks quality, will set new standards of efficiency in the Middle East and other growth markets.” The new Quester for construction models boast reinforced front suspension, higher ground clearance and an 11-litre engine (GH11E) based on the Volvo Group’s global technology resources, in combination with Japanese manufacturing quality. Features such as fuel economy, payload, robustness and a wide range of applications not only meet various customer needs but also extend the uptime of the truck, UD Trucks says. Robust, strong and purpose-built for the region, the new Quester range has all the ingredients to make a mark in the Middle East.

A multichAnnel powerhouse with internAtionAl reAch
33 In 60 years of auctioning machinery, Ritchie Bros. has conducted over 7,000 auctions globally, including those from its Dubai site, started in the late 1990s.
In a fast-paced environment where construction businesses are constantly in motion, having access to powerful ways to buy and sell machinery is critical. Methods to manage fleets have drastically changed over the years, becoming smarter and more international. When Ritchie Bros. started holding equipment auctions at its Dubai site in the late 1990s, few people in the Middle East knew about its auction concept. Today thousands are using the company’s services every year. Ritchie Bros. has always been an innovator in its industry, developing tools and services that made buying and selling more rewarding. Since opening its doors, the Ritchie Bros. Dubai site has built up a reputation of being a massive international hub for the exchange of industrial machinery and trucks. Four times a year, people from all over the world join the auctions to buy what they need, making it a powerful place as well for sellers of equipment. When in 2002 the company introduced its live online bidding service, the auctions
opened new demand markets around the world while offering more convenience for bidders. Today approximately half of auction purchases come from online buyers, and still the Dubai auction theatre is filled with hundreds of people attending in person. Transformation Compared to 10 years ago, the number of bidder registrations have doubled at the Ritchie Bros. auctions in Dubai. Around the world, more than half of Ritchie Bros.’ auction purchases now take place online. Although the unreserved auctions are going strong, the company also embarked on a journey to expand its offering. After acquisitions of Mascus in 2016 and IronPlanet in 2017, Ritchie Bros. became a true multichannel platform solution provider, offering a range of channels to buy and sell – with each of the channels catering to specific needs, and working together to offer more value in various situations. The company’s channels now include Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers onsite unreserved

auctions, IronPlanet’s online auctions, the reserved online marketplace Marketplace-E and listing website Mascus. Each channel has its own unique set of features and everything is managed under one roof. Ritchie Bros. combines the power of modern online solutions with the innovative and customer centric nature it has historically had. This is revolutionising the way businesses are managing their fleets and is the biggest development the company has seen, certainly in the last 10 years. Ritchie Bros. recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, having conducted more than 7,000 auctions around the world. The company, established by the three Ritchie brothers in 1958 in a small town in Canada, has come a long way. But it is certainly well-positioned to help the world buy and sell machinery for a long time to come. Ritchie Bros.’ website, www.rbauction. com, has auction calendars, equipment details, auction results, sales representatives and more.

Spanish tower crane specialist Comansa has added two more models to its already wide range of luffing-jib cranes, launching the brand-new CML280 and CML310 luffers at the Bauma China exhibition held towards the end of last year. Comansa said it aims to cover the growing demand for luffing jib cranes in the 18t and 24t capacity class, and that the two models are aimed particularly at the Asian and Middle Eastern markets, as this is where the two weight classes are most in demand. According to Comansa, those markets are seeing an increase in vertical construction in very narrow spaces, projects on which luffing jib cranes are the best solution. The two new cranes feature a very short counterjib radius of only 7.3m, an important advantage on congested sites. The CML280 and CML310 cranes will also be available in Africa and South America. At Bauma China, Comansa showed off the all-new CML310, which has a maximum load capacity of 24t and a maximum reach of 60m. This model shares most of the elements from the slewing part – the jib, cat-head and counterjib – with the CML280, which has the same reach but a maximum load capacity of 18t.

VolVo Debuts new multi-Demolition boom Why get it? enables use of heavier tools anD boots proDuctivity for faster roi The new Volvo multi-demolition boom for use with its EC380E HR high-reach excavator enables customers to use heavier tools and work deeper and closer to the machine underground, boosting their productivity and profitability. The boom enables customers to maximise machine utilisation and get more out of their machine. In the straight position, it provides a claimed industry-best tool weight capacity of 4.3t at 15.2m, while delivering a 360-degree working range. Volvo says this enables customers to use heavier tools with their demolition digging boom set at a height of up to four storeys. The new boom can also be configured for double bending. This greater flexibility
means operators can work deeper and closer to the machine underground at a depth of -10m with tools. “As the buildings are growing taller, there is an increasing demand for underground demolition, for example of basements, car parks or even underwater projects,” says Peter Lam, product manager for Demolition and Special Application Solutions within Volvo CE’s EMEA sales region. The multi-demolition boom fits the patented Volvo modular joint system, using a hydraulic full pin connection mechanism to ensure a rigid connection between the base machine and the digging boom or highreach boom. The operator can change the position of the boom from straight to bent from the comfort of the cab within minutes. “Demolition is an important segment to Volvo CE and we are committed to developing our offer in this area,” Lam
says. “With the new multi-demolition boom, customers will get more options out of their existing demolition machine, for increased productivity and profitability. We are confident that this new option will be highly appreciated by the market.” The multi-demolition boom is available on new machines in Europe and as a kit mounted on its own cradle for Volvo customers who already have an EC380E HR excavator in their fleet. 01 PlaN a six-mONTh cyclE Most of the maintenance of your generator will take place within a six-month period. The simplest tasks involve inspection of oil, coolant, fuel and so on. Some routine tasks, such as cleaning the air filter, can happen monthly or weekly, depending on the size and workload of the generator. Replacing oil filters and such needs to happen every few months. What you absolutely should not do is install and forget.
NEvEr usE iT iNdOOrs Generators create fumes, the type that will likely incapacitate you before you even know you’ve been poisoned. You can also damage a generator if it starts running out of air, so make sure your machine can breathe. A generator must always be in a well-ventilated space. Even enclosures for generators are specially designed for optimum air circulation.

dON’T fuEl dirEcTly Not only is it dangerous to feed fuel directly into a running generator, it can also damage your equipment due to temperature variances. There are circumstances and models that allow direct refuelling, but those are exceptions to the rule. Always turn your generator off before topping up its fuel, allowing a cool-down period, especially for petrol models, which must be handled with extreme care. Diesel generators are not as susceptible to this, but care is advised for longer life.

draiN Old fuEl Fuel ages and degrades, even becoming foamy, so you cannot leave it in the tank indefinitely. If you fire up a generator with old fuel, it can cause problems. There’s no definitive answer on how long fuel can sit; petrol ages faster than diesel and aging varies with the additives. How you store the fuel also makes a difference. If in doubt, replace. The fuel is always cheaper than replacing components, such as injector pumps, that could be damaged.
chEck ThE vOlTs Measure the voltage coming off your generator with a voltmeter. If the volts do not match up with what the generator should supply, get a professional to inspect it. Also, more volts are not better: a generator that produces more volts than it should is likely running too fast, which can damage it and your other equipment.

dON’T ruN OuT Of fuEl Generators create power by rotating magnetic coils along each other. One thing you must avoid is those coils becoming demagnetised. This is the case if a generator runs out of fuel: it stops generating electricity, but the devices taking power from it will suck the magnetism right out of those coils. The result is a very big repair bill or even a new generator. You can run a generator dry, but then it must not be coupled to anything.
usE a TraNsfEr swiTch Never run a cable straight from your generator to whatever needs power. This can result in backfeeding, which is damaging for the alternator in your genset. A transfer switch stops this from happening. Some generators have a transfer switch built in, but never assume as much. The mistake can lead to severe damage and even accidents.
07 makE iT ruN OfTEN Mechanical equipment doesn’t like standing around. Over time, dust, dead insects and all manner of things can gunk up its parts. Even if you don’t use your generator often, let it run for 30 minutes or so every few months.

Generators FEBRUARY 2019
Looking to surge
Powerhouses in the region’s generator sector are keePing to a growth trend with a focus on new deals and service while exPanding market Penetration for future rewards
D
espite the general construction machinery sector being sluggish overall on 2018, the generator business is still performing well for some of the most recognised names in the sector. At Korean powerhouse Doosan Portable Power (DPP) , the year gone by was all about consolidation and increasing market penetration – as it will be this year. For a company that entered the Middle East’s generator sector only two years ago, growth has been rapid and continues unabated with the efforts of the team at DPP. “At DPP, our performance in 2018 was up to
expectation and we met our targets in almost all markets in the region we are in,” says Gaby Rhayem, regional director, Doosan Bobcat Middle East and Africa. “The generator is one of the main components needed in any construction project as well as for many other applications. Electricity is a must everywhere, so this business is seldom depressed.” This is a view shared by another big name in the sector, JCB, which has enjoyed some good times in the sector, says Rajbir Sandhu, regional general manager, Middle East, who adds: “The demand for generators is on the up in the Middle East due to a number of factors. We’ve seen it grow by 30% in the last three years and we forecast similar growth in the next few years also. Among the reasons for this are changes to regulations for backup power becoming
more stringent and increasing demand from the rental sector to support infrastructure developments across the region. There is also an increase in event support to provide both prime and back-up power requirements, ensuring the events continue despite a power loss.” The last 12 months have seen further growth and JCB has been working closely with some major accounts, such as Rental Solutions & Services (RSS), “a preferred partner for temporary power and cooling rental solutions in the Middle East”. In 2017 RSS took more than 300 JCB generators, from the smaller 60kVA units to 500kVA, and again another order for 400 units from 60kVA right up to 1mW in 2018. A demand that has arisen recently is due to the government mandate in many countries in the region for public and commercial facilities such as shopping
41 With its own Dieselmax engines and a habit of using in-house components for better qualitycontrol, the robustness of JCB generators is a big draw in the market.
JCB-Khan sahiB Deal
clinching with robustness One of the biggest contracting companies in the UAE, Khan Sahib, has opted for JCB generators. In a first for the contracting powerhouse, JCB supplied Khansaheb Sykes with eight units of its QS range generators which Khan Sahib Sykes is utilising to power their dewatering pumps.
The order delivered by JCB totalling eight gensets comprised two of its QS 115 and six 65QS models. A big driver behind Khan Sahib Sykes’ decision to use JCB was JCB’s inhouse Dieselmax engine, which has proven itself to be robust, fuel efficient and able to cope with the
touch climatic conditions of the Middle East whilst being fully supported by the British company’s dealer network across the region. Explaining some of the plus points for Kahn Sahib Sykes, Rajbir Sandhu says: “Like the other equipment that we manufacture, our generators are mainly produced in-house
for total quality control. JCB Power Systems builds our six-cylinder JCB dieselmax engines and is also involved in continuous product development. Our Power Products staff is dedicated to supporting JCB’s power product offering, unlike many other manufacturers who do not have dedicated staff
for their generator division. “And then there is our 13-strong world class dealer network spread around the Middle East who all distribute JCB equipment, parts, spares and consumables to our customers. These dealers are supported directly by JCB both in the region and from our headquarters in the UK.”

malls to have full emergency back-up power, which JCB has benefitted from. “In the short term it has certainly driven demand and it allows us to target developments for future business while utilising our Premier Range offering, which uses engines from 700-2500kVA coupled with DSE controllers to supply a mains failure solution meeting the new legislation’s needs,” Sandhu explains. “JCB is currently talking to various facility management companies and mall owners across the UAE for retrofitting back-up power. We have the solutions available and the challenge now is to secure orders and ensure the existing developments can implement them into the existing infrastructure.” DPP also has its own sets of solutions, not
only for back-up power but also for various other uses. Mousa N. Mousa, Middle East and East Africa, DPP, says: “While the construction sector is the biggest one for generators in this region, there are also other important ones, such as telecom and rental. It can also depend on a country-by-country basis. We have a range of products that can meet any business application or requirement, with our models ranging from 20-800KVA in output, covering 85% of the entire generator market here. “The breadth of your range aside, you need to provide excellent quality and the best support and also be competitive in price. If you lose any of these elements, then you won’t be the most preferred option. Also, to get all of this right in any market takes a little time;
SDMO gensets have been part of some of the biggest and most prestigious projects in the UAE, such as The Louvre Abu Dhabi, Sharjah airport and Ibn Battuta Mall.
Doosan 20-60KVa MiDDle east MoDels
reaPing the rewards Doosan Portable Power has reaped rich rewards from its four-model range of 2060kVA generators it brought to the Middle East and Africa markets early last year in both 50 Hz and 60 Hz versions. As well as construction, rental and agriculture, the new generators have extended the Doosan portfolio to a wider audience to cover applications such as home standby, telecommunications and back-up power for small businesses. The four new models – the G20, G30, G45 and G60 – provide prime power outputs
of 20, 30, 45 and 63 kVA respectively, and all four units are available as open units (XF) or sound attenuated versions (XW). The equivalent 60 Hz versions are also available in a range of voltages between 220V and 480V (Phase to Phase). The standard framefuel tank configuration of the generators ensures autonomy of at least 15 hours at 75% of the load, allowing users to work regular shifts without refuelling concerns. They are powered by Cummins diesel engines and are covered by a standard warranty of two years and/or
4000 hours on the complete powertrain, which is among the best in the market, DPP says. The generators are fully supported by the fast-growing DPP dealer network for the Middle East and Africa, from unit start-up to complete servicing, maintenance and troubleshooting back-up. In addition to dealer parts stock for planned servicing or emergency needs, parts are also available through the Doosan network and from within the Doosan Parts warehouse in Dubai.
it does not happen in a few months, because you’re building a foundation. But so far we are achieving our targets ever year and we are steadily growing. DPP as a brand is only around three years old in the market and we’re developing this segment to match the levels we enjoy in the compressor business and the Bobcat compact machines business.” In order to do this, DPP appointed new dealers in several new countries in the region, making it a good year in many ways for the brand and setting it up nicely for the immediate future, adds Hazem Elnaqeeb, district manager, portable power Middle East at DPP. “In terms of market share, we are still among the leaders in most markets and segments we operate in. For example, in KSA we are definitely in the top-5,” he adds. “Our plan going forward is to expand our network and dealer coverage even further in the entire region. Our products are among the best and we need stronger representation to be closer to our target customers. It is a saturated market in the generator space and with so many brands vying for customer attention, having the right dealer makes all the difference. This year our focus will be to get the right partners in place in the entire region, partners who are focused on the DPP products and share our values and vision for the brand. Greater market penetration is DPP’s goal in the immediate term. “DPP’s network here started with only two dealers, of which one in Saudi is still our biggest in the region. By the end of 2018, we reached 10 active DPP dealers, which is a very good growth in two years. And we are also expecting
43 to reach 16-17 dealers by the end of this year. Our plan is to spread our operations over the entire MEA territory in the next 4-5 years.” Meanwhile, French generator manufacturer SDMO is not resting on its laurels in the region. The Kohler-owned company has found considerable success in the region, especially in the UAE where it is represented by local machinery powerhouse Genavco. In a long association, Genavco has managed to establish SDMO as the brand of choice in the installed continuous power sector. “Some of the many important projects we have provided SDMO generators to include the Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah International Airport and Dubai’s Ibn Battuta Mall,” says Asif Khan, general manager, Plant and Machinery at Genavco. “While all of these required back-up power installations, we specialise in continuous power projects such as construction sites. Some of the biggest contractors in Dubai use SDMO gensets for their projects.” Big projects require big back-up from the OEMs, which JCB has got down to an art. Sandhu explains: “Part of the JCB package is the service and support provided by our dealers. A JCB service agreement allows customers to plan and manage their machine maintenance budget, with the reassurance that their machine

is receiving the best support available with added value due to a full service history. These agreements offer a high degree of flexibility: you can set up a service agreement at the time of purchase or at any subsequent point. “All service intervals are hour based - for example every 500 hours or six months and this is monitored and tracked by JCB’s LiveLink telemetry system, which provides live updates when you are coming up to a service interval. Only genuine JCB parts and components are used by our factorytrained engineers, ensuring confidence throughout the period of machine ownership. JCB believes for complete peace of mind and total budget predictability, a Repair and Maintenance Agreement is the right solution. And our engines are usually in-house JCB ones, with 99% of service issues resolved by our own people rather than third parties.” JCB will participate in the Middle East Electricity exhibition for the first time this year with its entire product range in the Middle East and will unveil a new model on its stand, adding greater flexibility to its QS range, Sandhu informs. With new models and dealers, it’s clear that the major names expect the Middle East generator sector to continue on a steady growth path for the moment.
