PartnershiPs are key In the highly competitive world of construction, carving a niche in both the projects space and the equipment market takes some doing. Whether you are a manufacturer of machinery, a buyer who puts the machines to work in projects or a contractor, succeeding in this sector is not an endeavour that can be achieved without a support structure. So, for a manufacturer, success in the market is contingent upon the performance and dedication of the dealer; for a contractor, success depends on the support of the equipment rental company; and for the rental company, success depends on the services of the dealer and manufacturer. It’s a full circle, one that illustrates how connected the sector is and also how important it is to forge partnerships. We got to know more about partnerships last month when CMME visited Kanoo Machinery, the country dealer for Bobcat in the UAE. The long and strong association between Kanoo and Bobcat has elevated the compact equipment maker into a ubiquitous name in small equipment not only in the UAE, but also the region as a whole. Taking a first-hand look at Kanoo Machinery’s service, support and parts operations for Bobcat made it amply clear that Kanoo is the giant on whose shoulders Bobcat has stood, to enable it to see further in this market. Another illustration of the importance of partnerships came during the CMME visit to Safelift’s new premises in Abu Dhabi’s Mussafah area. Having grown steadily over a decade, the UAE powered access rental specialist marked its tenth anniversary by inaugurating the new yard, which comes complete with full repair and support facilities, an area to stock parts and training facilities, and offices. In a measure of the
importance Safelift gives to supporting its customers, the cornerstone of its success, the rental company has decided to move to where most of its customers are based as it targets the oil & gas sector. And it has ensured it does so with increased space for facilities that support its partners. Indeed, the entire sector is about partnerships. An event such as Bauma – on which we present the concluding part of our two-part review in this issue – is a place for the equipment sector to meet and forge alliances and partnerships, rather than simply a place for manufacturers to unveil their latest models. And it is the spirit of partnership that makes us write this magazine. As reporters and readers, we are in a partnership with each other, co-travellers in the world of construction equipment. As the Holy Month culminates into the celebration of Eid this month, we wish all our readers and supporters the joys of the festive season and pray that our partnership is further strengthened with time. Eid Mubarak!

Kuwaiti firm Hertz Dayim Equipment Rental has taken delivery of an order of 77 JLG aerial work platforms, comprising boom lifts and electric scissors. It includes two of JLG’s 1850SJ, two 1500SJ, six 1350SJP and six 1250AJP – the largest access platforms in the Kuwait market today – making Dayim one of the premier high access providers in the Middle East, said a statement from specialist powered access equipment and telehandler maker JLG, part of the Oshkosh Corporation. Chris Brocklehurst, country director, Hertz Dayim Equipment Rental, said: “We are very pleased with the continued support of [Middle East sales director] Ian Hume and his team and for the long-standing relationship we have had with JLG in the region. Many of these units are now with major clients within the oil & gas fields in the region, giving them the support and reassurance of quality equipment with the premium support our clients demand. As customers
nowadays demand new equipment for the safest, most productive and costeffective methods of working that the industry provides, customers rely on us to make their projects a success, given the tight margins they work under.” Dayim Equipment Rental was established in Kuwait in 2018 and is a group company of Dayim, which operates and manages various companies across sectors using a combination of joint ventures, investment and strategic partnership. The company offers a wide range of equipment for rent, including access platforms, generators, air compressors, lighting towers, welding machines and material handling and earth moving equipment. “Hertz Dayim Equipment Rental places great emphasis on its partners as part of its overall customer satisfaction and service turnaround, and we are happy to say that JLG, being a global player in the access platforms market, has been a major factor in this endeavour,” Brocklehurst added.

Griffin to build UAE’s first waste fuel plant
Following the financial close of the Emirates RDF waste fuel plant project in early May, Griffin Refineries has announced that it will soon start construction of the “state of the art” plant in Umm Al Quwain. Emirates RDF is a joint venture between UAE contractors Besix and TG Eco Holding, along with Griffin Refineries,
according to a statement. The project is a publicprivate-partnership (PPP) and will run on a build-operatetransfer (BOT) model, with a 15-year postconstruction operational phase, according to Griffin Refineries. “We are happy to be able to develop this strategic project for waste management in
the Northern Emirates. Emirates RDF contributes to the UAE strategic objective of landfill diversion of at least 75% by 2021, and it helps cement plants in decreasing their use of fossil fuels,” said Nico de Koning, project manager GM, Emirates RDF. Once the plant commences operations in September 2020, it will receive 1,000t of municipal waste per day from approximately 550,000 residents in Umm Al Quwain and Ajman. The waste will be converted into an alternative energy source known as refuse derived fuel (RDF), which is expected to be used in cement factories as fuel instead of coal, resulting in the diversion of at least 90% of household waste from landfills.

Bobcat launches loader remote control Bobcat is coming out with a new remote control system for its compact loaders, which allows operators to leave their seat in the cab and control their Bobcat loader remotely. It is compatible with Bobcat skid-steer, compact track and all-wheel steer loader models equipped with the company’s selectable joystick controls. The company said that this makes it the first manufacturer to introduce a remote control system as original plug-andplay equipment, rather than as an add-on development from a third party. The new system will be commercially available later this year. According to Bobcat, remote control solutions have proved their qualities and abilities to save lives in the toughest
environments all around the world by providing service during disasters like floods, forest fires, mud or rockslides, and in other places where operators can be subjected to dangerous situations. “We first presented our
remote control prototype at Bobcat Demo Days with excellent feedback from our customers, then subjected it to further improvements, testing and licensing, before finally introducing it as an easy plugand-play solution for existing

This was the voice of our customers and the issues we observed on most job-sites.” The system is an easily portable and industrial radio remote control solution that can be mounted and dismounted on machines in minutes.

French powered access powerhouse Haulotte won two of the seven awards last month at the 2019 European Rental Awards in Madrid, the continent’s rental sector’s annual event. The Haulotte HA20 LE won Rental Product of the Year, while Pierre Saubot, founder and chairman of the Haulotte Group, received the Lifetime Achievement Award. According to the judges, the “HA20 LE is a very strong product, and as the first of Haulotte’s all-electric Pulseo generation range, it makes
a strong statement on electrification and sustainability”. The electric articulating boom offers silent operation even on the roughest terrain, all with due regard for the environment. Ultra-fast lifting speed and simultaneous movements work together to enhance productivity with zero emission. Under Saubot from 1985, Haulotte has expanded internationally and developed its product offering, with a wide range of AWPs and telehandlers. “This prize... also belongs to all those who have worked with me over the years,” he said.

ESCO, Sharaf to retrofit Dubai airport lighting
Etihad Energy Services Company (Etihad ESCO) has signed an agreement with Sharaf Electronics for the implementation of a lighting retrofit project at three terminals of Dubai International Airport. The project is in support of the airport’s vision of environmental sustainability. The project will see 15,000 indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures replaced with energy-saving LED lights. The move is expected to net the airport $1.36m in annual savings every year for the next
seven years. “To begin with, putting together the project in place was a challenge, as not only had the lights to meet Dubai Airport’s highest quality standards, but they also must guarantee longterm high energy savings. Sharaf Electronics team worked with several vendors to meet the exacting standards to our satisfaction. We wish them success in executing the project. The project will turn Dubai Airport into a leading model of energy efficiency in the emirate,” said Ali Al Jassim, CEO, Etihad ESCO. With over 8,500 outdoor lights and 7,000 indoor lights, and through the use of the latest lighting technologies from Europole and Sylvania, Dubai Airport will be a front runner in energy-efficient lighting in the world, ESCO said.

JCB marks loading shovel milestone JCB is celebrating 50 years of wheeled loading shovel manufacture, with production hitting record highs. Over those five decades, the company’s award-winning loader range has undergone a big expansion, with the manufacturer introducing many market-leading technologies and establishing the JCB brand among global leaders in the loader business. The company entered the wheeled loader market with the acquisition of UK firm Chaseside Engineering, taking on its seven rigid axle machines. Relocation of production lines from Chaseside’s plant in Blackburn, Lancashire, took several months and it was all systems go by the start of 1969, the first full year of shovel manufacturing at JCB’s
expanding Rocester factory in Staffordshire. The fledgling wheeled loader division built just 298 machines that year, catering primarily to domestic demand. As the 50th anniversary is marked, JCB now produces wheeled loaders in the thousands on production lines
around the world, including in the UK, India, Brazil and China. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of JCB opening a multi-million-pound factory in Cheadle, Staffordshire, dedicated to the production of wheeled loaders. JCB chief innovation and growth officer Tim Burnhope
said: “Over the past 50 years, JCB’s wheeled loader range has evolved into a major part of our product portfolio. Fifty years is a long time, but our sights are firmly on the future and we are committed to bringing new levels of innovation to this range. The launch of the spacious CommandPlus cab on our wheeled loaders was a pivotal moment in this machine’s history, and this innovation really did put operator comfort at the heart of the design. “JCB now offers 25 different wheeled loader models and manufactures the product on three continents. With our innovative range, we are very well placed to increase our sales in a sector which has grown rapidly around the world for three consecutive years.”

Demag stars in Cannes quiCk lift
W
ith time a decisive factor, crane service provider Vernazza Autogru (VA) dismantled an old railroad bridge owned by French railway company SNCF in Mandelieu-la-Napoule, west of Cannes, with its Demag duo of crawler and all-terrain cranes. VA had only 130 hours for the job and relied on its brand-new Demag CC 3800-1 crawler crane, assisted by a Demag AC 120 all-terrain crane. VA had been using the Demag AC 120 for a while already, but the crawler crane and the Superlift system it set up and disassembled for this job – CC 3800-1 – was being put into service for the first time. “We just received the crane from the manufacturing plant in Zweibrücken a few days ago. It actually took 45 transportation trucks to deliver it here to the south of France, where it will get the chance to prove its mettle right away,” says VA France general director Paolo Delfino. There were several reasons why the brandnew crane was the right choice for the timecritical job, he adds. The Demag CC 3800-1 had the lifting capacity needed to remove the bridge components, each weighing up to 115t. Its crawler width of only 2m made it compact enough to operate on the tight job-site. And perhaps even more importantly, the crane could be set up quickly and easily, which was especially vital for this job due to the tight timeframe. In addition, and like any other time a Demag crane is used for the first time, a member of the Terex Cranes team was present to provide on-site support. The VA team decided on an LSL configuration with a 78m main boom, Superlift system and split tray. The space available at the job-site was
anything but ample, as the river Siagne runs right next to where the crane was being used, while a golf course is just adjacent. And the weather decided not to play along, with a wild mix of rain and wind. Despite all this, the team and its six assembly technicians managed to successfully set up the Demag CC 3800-1 in only four days, as planned. And once the first-time-ever set-up was complete, there was nothing standing in the way of dismantling the old steel bridge, as SNCF had closed off the railroad section for 130 hours. This amount of time had to suffice for lifting and removing a total of eight heavy steel components up to 22m long, 6m wide and 8m tall, as well as a number of smaller lifts for bridge components that were not quite as enormous. In order to stick to the tight schedule, the team not only had the crane operators for the CC 3800-1 and the AC 120, but also four rigging technicians, a lift supervisor and a Superlift supervisor for each shift, for a total of 22 people at the job-site. For the heavy lifts, it was necessary to lift 75t components at a maximum radius of 68m, as well as 115t components at a radius of 43m. All lifts followed the same pattern: the Demag CC 3800-1 lifted the components, travelled 18m under load to get them to the location where they needed to be set down, and then put them down, after which it returned to its lift area. This made it possible to completely dismantle the bridge within the defined timeframe. “The new crane met all our expectations – it’s powerful, reliable and incredibly easy to operate. It did its job perfectly. Terex Cranes’ technicians and after-sales support are just as good as its cranes,” said technical manager Matteo Ciminello.

W
hen UAE firm Safelift moved into its new large premises in Abu Dhabi last month, it marked both a culmination and a beginning – the end of a 10-year journey of growth that began when the access equipment rental specialist was set up in 2009, and the start of a new focus on the oil & gas market, as well as on even further refinement of an already well-received support and training proposition. For managing director Wayne Taylor, the move is logical in the sequence of his company’s growth. “We’ve been looking for a long time for a suitable yard that we can grow into after expanding our fleet and operations. We’ve outgrown our last premises and when we saw this one, we thought it lends itself very well to our business and we can expand into this.” The location for the new Safelift depot in the M15 sector of Abu Dhabi’s Mussafah Industrial Area is appropriate, Taylor says, given the thrust of the company’s activities going forward. “Being in the middle of the petroleum sector here in the M15 area of Mussafah, we are also near prospective oil & gas customers – a sector we are increasingly looking to target. We’re doing a lot of work now for customers in Ruwais and the Western Region of the UAE, and that’s our focus this year, to push more into the oil & gas areas.” Occupying a total area of 35,000 square feet, the new facility includes a 10,000sqft workshop, offices, a yard and a warehouse for parts, and Taylor adds: “We also offer
specialist training here with both PASMA and IPAF training. The training facilities are integrated into the office.” As a provider of a wide range of access equipment, a champion of safety and a training partner for both the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) and the Prefabricated Access Suppliers’ and Manufacturers’ Association (PASMA), Safelift has come a long way since it was started by Taylor and his partner Paul Richards a decade ago, with sponsorship from the Abu Dhabi-based Al Shoumoukh Group, headed by Dr Ali Saeed Al Ameri. “Paul and I started Safelift exactly a decade ago, and we’ve been associated with Dr Ali ever since. He has seen us grow from a very small company to what we are today and has always supported us along the way,” says Taylor. Reminiscing about the beginnings of Safelift in its tenth anniversary year, Dr Al Ameri says: “Safelift is a successful enterprise that has grown consistently over the years. We started with 12 machines that arrived in our first container, and since then the company has expanded to where we now have several hundred machines in our fleet. It is one of the most successful ventures in our Al Shoumoukh group of companies. “Safelift has made the right moves at the right time, in terms of putting in place the appropriate technologies and qualified people, staying abreast of the latest developments and innovations in the field of mobile elevated work platforms (MEWP). From time to time, we’ve had to face challenges in the market – for example, the economic downturn of 2008-09 – but the growth of Safelift has been steady all the way and is continuing. “It’s the flexibility of your structure and how you manage things. We have been able to contribute to the safety aspects of the work at heights sector within the region. When we started in 2009, there weren’t many

powered access rental companies here. We feel we’ve made a big contribution to safety in working at heights.” Analysing some of the reasons for the continued growth and success of Safelift, Taylor adds: “A lot of it is down to having the right people in place, like a sales staff that can go out and bring business when times are tough. And strict credit control is another one.” Richards says: “There’s a lot of management experience that we bring to the field. I’ve been in this industry for nearly 40 years and Wayne’s only probably a few years behind that, so we are very experienced in this sector. We’ve been through many recessions in the UK and Europe, so we know what to do when the going gets tough. “We have more than 75 years of combined experience in the access sector, so we are quite relaxed about it. Obviously, we prefer the markets to be continually buoyant, while the reality is somewhat different. But we don’t panic.” This maturity in its operations that Safelift prides itself on also comes with a comprehensive fleet of several hundred machines of various types and categories, and a healthy emphasis on meticulous safety and maintenance. “In terms of fleet composition, we’re around 60% booms and 40% scissors, and there’s a bigger mix of diesel and electric. The booms lend themselves more to the diesel construction type equipment and the scissors more towards the electric. We run booms from 12m to 43m and the scissor lifts
in our fleet go from the small push-around units of 5m working height to 18m working height diesel scissors. It is important to have a range of products because even on the same job-site, at different phases of the project, you’ll require changes in equipment to suit specific processes,” explains Taylor. “Our fleet is a mixture of all the top manufacturers. We have equipment from Skyjack, Genie, Snorkel, JLG and Niftylift, and a mixture of diesel scissors, diesel booms, bi-fuel booms, electric scissors and also

helping the mid-field terminAl rise Among the prestigious mega projects that Safelift has supplied equipment to, the Mid-field Terminal of Abu Dhabi International Airport deserves special mention. “At its peak, we had around 80 of our machines working on the project with various contractors. It was a mixture of all heights, with the 43m being our biggest machine there. We also had the low-level pusharound units and smaller 8m electric scissor lifts for the MEP contractors,” says Wayne Taylor. “We were hiring out push-along 5m scissors for internal work, and the roofing
contractor was using our 43m machines. And we had everything in between on that site. It is important to have a wide range of products in our fleet because even on the same job-site, you’ll require changes in equipment at different phases of the project to suit specific processes.” Safelift not only supplied machines for the project but also offered comprehensive support with training and certification, says Paul Richards. “We did a lot of training along with IPAF on the project, which eventually became mandated by the project owners. In big
projects such as the Midfield Terminal, there often are facilities for carrying out the training on-site, so even though we have our own training set-up, it was more convenient for everyone to use the on-site training rooms and other facilities. The contractors and operators are all in one place with the equipment that is actually being used on the project, so it was easier to do the training at the actual job-site. When we have such big projects, we take the training to the site rather than having the site come to us to receive the training.”
especially low-level equipment up to 5m.” While the UAE, like the rest of the region, has been a diesel-powered and long boom market, the trend is clearly visible now for other machines and fuel types, according to Taylor. “We have seen good traction in the market for electric machines. We deal with a lot of MEP companies, especially for the likes of hospitals and academic institutions, where the demand is for the low-level electric lifts. We’ve just done a large project at Al Ain Hospital, which took a lot of low-level equipment.” Richards adds: “I think it’s also a move generally in the industry, certainly in many regions, into new ranges of hybrid and electric machines, especially when they’re working on construction projects in academic environments, in-city projects, museums or offices – or anywhere where it benefits to have minimal disruption from a noise level and pollution or emissions standpoint. “I think here, like elsewhere, as people become more aware of the new ranges of equipment that are available and which we have introduced in our fleet, the benefits of the new technology will be felt, particularly in certain environments.” While new technology is making inroads into the Middle East, another vital aspect of the sector that is also finally receiving its due importance in the region is safety. As an integral IPAF member in the region, Safelift has always championed safe workat-height practices and Taylor says this is now finding appreciation. “We’ve also found that in the region there’s
17
more of a push now on work-at-height safety. In Abu Dhabi, this is being led by OSHAD [Abu Dhabi Occupational Safety and Health Centre] through certain events where they are just focusing on working at heights. Unsafe practices are now being frowned upon in the industry. And that’s a sector where we look at ensuring that people work safely.” As soon as Safelift delivers a machine, the company does an on-site familiarisation with personnel from the end user, on the specific site that the unit is meant to work on. And it also offers more in-depth operator training and certification. “More major projects are now pushing towards the IPAF licence and the PASMA for the towers, and we have training facilities for both, and we’re also members of both bodies. For example, Dubai Expo 2020 have just announced that it’s mandatory on their sites to be certified, and we’re also finding other larger job-sites making it mandatory,” Taylor says. “Like most rental companies, we have a strong preference that our equipment be used by trained and qualified operators, so we do everything we can to encourage making licensing mandatory. And wherever it’s required, we have the full facilities for training and licensing,” adds Richards. “Also, from a hire company’s perspective, when we rent out units, to some extent we lose control over who specifically is going to operate the equipment. We are delivering to a customer, but beyond that we don’t know over a period of weeks or months the specifics of who they’re going to allow
to operate the equipment. So anything that gives us the reassurance that it’s only going to be used by competent operators is obviously a big plus. That’s another area where our training helps.” Dr Al Ameri agrees: “Also, what we find is that better trained operators look after the equipment better. So our actual downtime on the machine is less, because we get less operator abuse when they are trained properly and they operate it correctly. It’s less downtime on our equipment and more

productivity for the customer as well.” But when downtime does happen, Safelift has ways and means in place to keep it to a minimum, with well-equipped workshops and mobile mechanics at the ready. “We have fully-equipped four-wheel-drive vehicles to take our mobile mechanics team to even remote and hard-to-reach job-sites. Our team comprises 14 mechanics in total, both internal and external. Most of them will go through trainings and certifications on products from the manufacturers whose machines we use,” Taylor explains. “We also hold a big stock of spare parts, usually the top 150 fastest moving ones. Experience tells us what the top-moving spare parts are; we keep those in stock and our stocks are constantly monitored to ensure that we do not run out.” Preventive maintenance is given top priority on Safelift’s fleet, with all machines equipped with telematics that report vital information to a dedicated service coordinator at the Mussafah premises, who logs all the data. “We know where each machine is. We can monitor whether a particular machine has any problem and take it out of service and bring it back to the workshop to fix whatever the problem is. We can also know in advance from the data about possible problems. We respond quickly by sending our closest guy to a problem, which again reduces downtime for our customer,” Taylor says. Richards succinctly sums up Safelift’s offering: “We can offer the full package, from the equipment to the training at the highest level, as well as the on-the-job support. We’re a one-stop shop for safe working at heights.”

t
o paraphrase an old adage in a construction equipment context, behind every successful manufacturer there is a dealer. And when it comes to compact equipment in the UAE, nothing illustrates this better than the relationship between Bobcat and UAE dealer Kanoo Machinery. While the Bobcat name is pretty much synonymous with the small stuff in the entire Middle East, especially for skid steer loaders and compact track loaders, equally famous in the UAE is its country dealer, Kanoo Machinery. The partnership between the two names has elevated Bobcat to such a position in the Emirates that it can lay legitimate claim to the title of king of the compact segment. At any rate, the by-word for skid steer loaders in the UAE is indeed Bobcat, as CMME has found repeatedly while speaking with operators at job-sites – and the manufacturer has its dealer to thank for this in no small measure. To get an insight into the synergy between dealer and manufacturer that has established both Bobcat and Kanoo at the top of the heap in the UAE’s compact segment, CMME asked Mohammad Himmo, brand manager for construction equipment at Kanoo Machinery, for the secret behind the successful team.
“Kanoo and Bobcat have a very long and historical business relationship. Thousands of Bobcat units have been sold by us as the exclusive dealer for Bobcat products in the UAE. Kanoo is very committed in promoting Bobcat in the country and maintaining the highest possible market share in the Emirates. It is a solid engagement between our two parties, which is made to sustain.” Sustaining relationships is what the Kanoo Group as a whole is passionate about. An illustrious UAE and regional group with interests in many different businesses in diverse sectors, Kanoo is a name that has stood for trust and excellence for many decades now, Himmo explains. This same dedication to giving the best extends to the field of construction equipment with Kanoo Machinery. Expounding on the group and its background, Himmo says: “Kanoo Machinery is a member of the Kanoo Group, one of the largest family-owned business groups in the region, with over 120 years of experience in the Gulf, Middle East and international markets. Today, Kanoo Machinery operates not only in the UAE but also in Bahrain (also with Bobcat), Saudi Arabia and Oman. “Since its inception, the Kanoo Group has diversified its interests, which now include shipping, travel, logistics, oil & gas, power, chemicals, joint ventures and of course construction machinery, including

“A big part of the reason behind our dominance in the compact equipment sector in the UAE is our long association with Kanoo Machinery” equipment rental among others. Kanoo Machinery has grown to become one of the leading materials handling, construction, agriculture, cleaning and industrial equipment distributors in the GCC, offerings its customers premier, world-leading brands.” While famous as Bobcat’s UAE partner, Kanoo Machinery is no one-trick pony, Himmo points out. Along with the compact equipment specialist, the company also offers brands such as Grove cranes, Hyster forklifts, Perkins engines, Tennant cleaning
equipment, Massey Ferguson, Lincoln Electric welding equipment, Norton, Ausa, Sullair and Beach Tech. “Products from these principals are marketed through dedicated product specialists from sales and after-market who are available in all our seven branches in the UAE – Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Mussafah, Al Ain, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah,” says Himmo. “Kanoo Machinery has diversified products to serve different industries. In our portfolio you will find mobile cranes,

welding machines, air compressors, material handling equipment and of course construction equipment. It is in the construction equipment sector that Kanoo Machinery is the exclusive dealer in UAE for Bobcat.” Another important arrow in Kanoo Machinery’s quiver is Kanrent, the group’s rental subsidiary. “It is a licensed company for the used and rental business and has an all-Bobcat fleet of telehandlers, skid steer loaders, compact track loaders, mini excavators and backhoe loaders. Kanrent offers various rental solutions, from shortand long-term rentals to renting with the option to purchase,” Himmo elaborates. Any partnership is built on trust and mutual goodwill, and the Bobcat-Kanoo one is no exception. Gaby Rhayem, regional director, Doosan Bobcat Middle East and Africa, tells CMME: “With Kanoo Machinery, both we as the principal and our customers are sure that we will always get the best, whether it is their stocks of machines and parts, their army of qualified service people, their workshops or mobile assistance units. We know that our customers will be well looked after, whether they’ve bought one unit or an entire fleet. A big part of the reason behind our dominance in the compact equipment sector in the UAE is our long association with Kanoo Machinery and their dedication.” This dedication is easy to see during a visit to Kanoo Machinery’s central UAE premises in Dubai’s Al Quoz industrial area. Giving CMME a tour of the facility, Himmo
21 says: “Kanoo Machinery is well recognised for its quality service standards, which are based on an ISO9001:2008 certification. We have also been recognised for our quality standards through prestigious quality awards such as the Sheikh Khalifa Excellence Award and Dubai Quality Award. We support our customers through an expert team of factory-trained service engineers, technicians and support staff, as well as salespeople. “Through the fully-equipped service facilities at our branches, Kanoo Machinery is capable of taking on all major repairs, refurbishment and painting on any type of equipment. Our factory-trained technicians make sure that customers’ equipment is well maintained all through its working life. With our fully fitted mobile service vehicles attending to customer machines on-site anywhere in the UAE, our target is to provide 100% uptime.” Apart from the facilities in its Al Quoz complex in Dubai, Kanoo also has another fully-equipped workshop in Abu Dhabi, Himmo adds, with all the facilities to offer fast turnaround and quality repair. “Each workshop is equipped with the latest tooling and test equipment to carry out quality repairs in accordance with Bobcat’s guidelines. Highly skilled factorytrained technicians are responsible for the efficient, systematic and quality repairs of your equipment in the shortest time possible. And when it comes to on-site support, our specially trained and qualified professional field service team is quick to respond to
customer calls, ready to meet customers’ demands and solve problems whenever and wherever assistance is needed.” The technicians are all trained and certified by Bobcat, Himmo says. There are dedicated training facilities in-house where Bobcat experts come and train Kanoo personnel, while technicians are also sent out for external training conducted by Bobcat. “Usually with a purchase we offer customers preventative maintenance contracts, extended warranties and

Bobcare protection as a package. We also run promotions across the year that come with added value, such as a recent campaign for Bobcat’s T40-180SLP telehandler, with which we offered three years each of factory warranty, service kit and finance,” he explains. The technical support facilities at Kanoo are of course fully supported by one of the most robust parts distribution operations in the region. The dealer’s several facilities in the country all keep an extensive stock of fast-moving parts and are assisted by central parts warehouses at both the Al Qouz facility and another dedicated parts holding centre in Dubai’s Jebel Ali Free Zone. With all the Kanoo subsidiaries in the GCC linked together, the chance that a customer will not receive a part on time is next to non-existent, Himmo feels. (See box) Having already established itself as strongly as it has for Bobcat in the UAE’s compact machinery business, what does the future hold for Kanoo Machinery? “In the future, we will keep on widening our offerings in the same way as we have in the past. This is important because with the oil prices inching up, we are expecting an increase in government spending on public projects in the next few years. Moreover, Dubai Expo 2020 is just around the corner and all associated projects need to be completed on time. This will put pressure on the contractors and at this stage of the project the compact equipment is of the greatest importance, so that’s something we are hopeful about,” says Himmo.

playing the perfect part Any top-class support operation in the industry is underpinned not just by workshops and technicians, but also by extensive and timely availability of parts, and Kanoo’s is no exception. “An extensive inventory of fastmoving parts and consumables offers customers quick response times for breakdowns and is maintained in stock at all branches of Kanoo Machinery. This is complemented by a more comprehensive inventory at the Kanoo Distribution Centre in Al Quoz and in our dedicated central parts facility in Dubai’s Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA). Our distribution
centre is fully equipped with low-bed trailers, recovery vehicles and pick-up trucks to ensure timely deliveries to customers’ premises and to our branches,” says Mohammad Himmo. “Fast moving parts are stocked in all branches, and we also have online links to our regional warehouses in our other GCC branches in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. This is of course complemented by Bobcat’s own central parts distribution facility for the region in JAFZA, from where we can generally make non-stocking parts available within around two working days. “Trained and qualified personnel
ensure customers get prompt service to keep equipment downtime to a minimum. Our parts department has an excellent distribution network across Dubai, Sharjah, Al Ain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Abu Dhabi. “Kanoo Machinery offers SKUs (stock-keeping units) of over 18,000 genuine spare parts. Our 40-plus parts department staff and 10 field parts sales representatives deliver them almost overnight across the UAE. The total inventory value of the part lines we hold in stock exceeds $4m at any given point and generally makes for a confirmed first fill of 85% and above.”

01 STarT wiTh aN iNSPEcTiON Before any lifting project, a rigging expert should inspect the crane and handling equipment to make sure it’s safe. Even minor technical issues should not be ignored. Only machinery that is in top working condition should be used for the job. Weather conditions must also be considered for a safe lift.
KNOw yOur EquiPmENT Every operator should know how much weight their machine can lift, which can be found on the manufacturer’s load charts in the manual. You must be aware of the boom length and load radius, as well as the maximum angle capabilities, all of which play important roles in balancing loads.

uSE STrONg SliNgS On lifting projects where loads are first suspended by slings for better weight distribution and stability before the slings are attached to the crane hook, make sure that the slings used are durable and able to withstand the stresses caused by lifting heavy objects. It’s helpful to measure the tension in each sling leg, which needs to match the vertical capacity of the slings.
04
33
05
06
uSE a SPOTTEr whilE lifTiNg Operators and riggers often do not have a full view of the job-site or the load’s path while a crane is operating. To mitigate this, use a designated spotter who can direct the crane operator to ensure all loads have proper clearances and there are no obstacles in the way. Always be conscious of where people are on the work-site in relation to the load.
SiTE SafETy mEaSurES Observe certain safety practices on job-sites during lifting projects, such as keeping loads separated from workers, clearing the lift site and making sure no one comes under a suspended load. It is the operator’s responsibility to keep loads clear of all obstacles, which requires pre-planning and constant supervision. It’s especially crucial to avoid contact with power lines, which can lead to electric shock.
08
qualifiED PErSONNEl Every worker on a site should be aware of rigging safety. They should be trained to comply with all rigging procedures and understand the equipment. Professional riggers and crane operators should be able to anticipate problems before they happen and know how to stop equipment immediately if conditions become unsafe.

09 laND all lOaDS Never allow a load to be left suspended when a crane is turned off. Whenever the hoist is not supervised, attached loads should be landed. Always be aware of stacked material within the vicinity of a load, to avoid knocking it over. Make sure the landing area is clear before slowly lowering a load.
10
DOcumENTaTiON Keep a record of all issues with every crane. This will enable quick identification of any technical problems that may cause malfunction. A crane should be taken out of commission and stored for maintenance if any issues are identified. This policy is particularly important if a crane is going to be used by multiple operators on a site.

n the Middle East, more than perhaps in any other part of the world, when you mention the word crane, the popular perception of it is an all-terrain crane (ATC). The Middle East is ATC territory, owing to the big requirement in the region’s oil & gas, maritime and logistics sectors, its downstream petroleum industry and also its construction sector. The biggest players in the region’s ATC market are the global such as Manitowoc’s Grove, Terex’s Demag and Liebherr, as well as other manufacturers from the Far East. And the main users are the big rental companies who actually deploy the equipment, such as Al Faris and Integrated Logistics. All in all, it’s a sector that seldom fails to see action, whether it’s sales or projects. Speaking to CMME earlier, Kieve Pinto, director, Al Faris Equipment Rentals, one of the region’s largest crane rental companies, said: “The ATC is the most versatile self-driven machine that provides an economical lifting solution across various industry sectors, with short mobilisation times and quick assembly. It can be used across manufacturing for lifting steel structures and components, in maintenance for replacing and repair works, civil construction for lifting concrete slabs and structures, in logistics and shipping for lifting cargo, and in all other industries where lifting is required.” While most rental companies favour one brand in their fleets for purposes of operational simplicity and scale, the favourites are Grove, Demag and Liebherr. David Semple, Manitowoc’s senior VP for the Middle East, India, Russia and Africa, tells CMME that the ATC’s versatility is what makes it the lifting market’s favourite in the region, and boom length – or reach – is probably more sought-after than capacity. And Grove is among the leader, both in versatility and reach – and even capacity. In fact, the Grove line-up has undergone a revamp in the last few years, which has led to the
introduction of key models that have boosted popularity. “What is really promising for us is the new products that we have been introducing for the last three or four years. We’ve really changed the philosophy of design and manufacturing of our cranes, particularly our ATCs from Germany. The speed at which we’ve introduced new products and the features these have are exceptional. We’ve started hitting the right nails on the head at the right time, so to speak,” Semple says. The Grove ATC range has been completely renewed in the last five years, he explains, and now the lineup boasts products that have the best that current technology can offer offer. “Among the reasons behind this is the regulatory changes in Europe, particularly on the engine emissions, which has compelled us to redesign some of our products in order to fit new engines. Another driver of the change is the change in our organisation’s leadership. We have a new CEO for the last three years or so, and his background is very much operations driven, so his forte is to help us in the design and manufacture of our products. We’ve brought in a lot of lean techniques, which we call the Manitowoc Way. We’ve cut down some supply chain idiosyncrasies that we had and streamlined a lot of our processes. And when you line up all these factors you get a product range that is really smart and hits on the right combination between features, reliability and cost. So the overall value in the market is really strong. “For the Middle East a challenge is to de-tier the lowemission engines that we use in our cranes. We are very careful to address this problem at the design stage itself and we use clean engines for the Western markets that can be very easily reprogrammed for the lessregulated markets like the Middle East. When we need to manage two or more types of engines, it’s not good for us or our customers in terms of cost control, inventory management or form an engineering and service

point of view. So we are getting our engine suppliers - Mercedes MTU and Cummins - to manufacture engines for us in such a way that they can be used both in the regulated markets and then used in a reprogrammed way for the unregulated ones.” For Manitowoc, the ATC is a very European product, Semple adds. The company has other manufacturing bases for tower cranes, crawlers and rough terrain cranes but for ATCs “we only manufacture in Germany and we do so to a very high level of quality”. Another ATC brand known for its madein-Germany attributes is Demag, which was recently sold by previous owner Terex to Japanese mobile crane specialist Tadano. Even as the sale and transfer of the brand is being formally followed up on, Demag was business-as-usual at Bauma with some new launches. Tadano, however, remains tight lipped on their vision for the brand, preferring only to say at Bauma that by acquiring the German-headquartered Demag it will be able to significantly increase its global presence. “In addition, the expansion of Tadano’s own ATC range in connection with the takeover will meet the needs of Tadano customers… and hence an important milestone for the clearly defined goal of Tadano becoming No.1 in the lifting equipment industry. Tadano plans to complete the acquisition around mid-2019.” In pursuance of the goal to be numero uno, Tadano unveiled some new models at Bauma this year and showed off other popular ones, which included the ATF 60G-3 and the two new ATCs the four-axle ATF 100-4.1 and the five-axle ATF 120-5.1.
The centrepiece of both cranes is the new 60m main boom of the superstructure which is the same for both models. With it, the ATF 100-4.1 achieves lifting capacities that are way ahead in the competitive environment – by up to 100 % for individual radiuses. The ATF 120-5.1, in turn, is one of the most powerful cranes of its class for radiuses between 16m and 56m. A further quality is the high load-bearing capacity on the road. With a 12t axle load, 9.2t counterweight plus additional equipment may be taken along in addition to the 17.7m jib with integrated heavy-duty jib.
Japanese brand Tadano has introduced two new all-terrain crane models and looks good for a lot more activity in the segment after buying Demag from Terex.
The ATF 60G-3 lifts up to 46% more at the main boom and up to 62% more at the jib than other 60t cranes, says Tadano With a 48m main boom, it achieves a sheave height of up to 51m and a radius of up to 44m, which the company says no other competitor achieves. There have been over 30 deliveries of the crane in the last four months and more than 40 orders are still on the books for 2019, Tadano revealed. Meanwhile, Leibherr has also delivered several new cranes recently, notably in the Middle East region. Among them is a delivery of five new units to Dubai-based crane

new launches aT bauMa Manitowoc revealed three new Grove ATCs at Bauma 2019, launching a new five-axle and two new three-axle models. One of the units, the GMK5250XL-1, has a 78.5m boom, as well as Megatrak suspension and a twin-lock boom pinning system. Options for the crane include the VIAB turbo retarder clutch, which enables wear-free starting and breaking to enhance manoeuvrability and operator comfort. Additionally, it has been designed to fit a compact footprint, allowing it to be used in crowded or urban areas. The GMK3060L is part of the
company’s three-axle offering and includes a seven-section boom with 48m of main boom and a maximum tip height of 65m when working with its full jib. The 60t crane features Manitowoc’s Crane Control System with boom configurator or an efficient set up. It has been designed to be compact, to help it reach tight locations in urban areas as well. The company has also unveiled the GMK3050-2. It offers a 40m main boom, fast operating speeds and a single counterweight configuration for ease of use. “At Bauma what was most interesting for me was the smallest machine - the 50t 3-axle 3050-2.
We’ve had other 3050s in the past and digit at end indicates it’s the third generation. We’ve designed it as a taxi crane so that everything you need to use the crane - the counterweights, tackles and other implements - can all be carried on it. And we’ve built this crane especially keeping Saudi Aramco in mind and their needs and requirements for maintenance and installation duties at their oil fields and refineries,” says David Semple. “The 3050-2 is a great fit for Aramco’s operations and I’m very hopeful that it will really perform well. In fact, we recently supplied Aramco with 125 cranes and 85 of those were this model.”

on-board fly that features your choice of 4 manual offset positions or variable offset range from 0° to 45° with hydraulic cylinders. The fly also features Link-Belt’s innovative approach for erecting and stowing that minimizes the number of times a ladder is needed. The fly also features an integrated 3.0m (10ft) fly that is ideal for applications were two loads lines are necessary for lifting one load. Three additional 5.4m (18ft) lattice boom extensions bring the maximum tip height to 96m (315ft). Both the operator’s and driver’s cabs are completely
new with Link-Belt’s Pulse 2.0 being at the heart of everything. Neither cab lacks the comfort or conveniences including automatic climate control, Bluetooth radios, heated and ventilated seats, and the most comprehensive vision and lighting packages in this industry today. On the road, the 175|AT is the class leader in displacement and power with the 15litre, 535hp Cummins QSX15 engine. The chassis also features all-wheel ABS disc brakes, engine and powertrain braking, 8-wheel drive and speed dependent all-wheel steering.
and even more in tandem heavy lifts, which we have executed with meticulous planning using our ATCs. For civil structures and precast panels in residential projects, ATCs in the 25-50t class are most in demand. We provide heavy lift solutions engineered by our technical department. Liebherr cranes make up most of Al Faris’ fleet, with the 1,200t Liebherr 1200-9.1 ATC as the flagship. We bought 25 cranes from Liebherr (last year), mainly comprising ATCs in various capacities, and a few Demag 160t units.” When it comes to Demag, its 13-strong ATC

helping crane MobiliTy A major component in both productivity and operating cost is the contact patch your crane or equipment has with the ground – the tyre. Use the right one and you can enhance the performance of the crane while saving money on replacements. And Magna Tyres knows this. “Magna Tyres has several products for the crane segment that are making waves in the market and have achieved great popularity in the Middle East,” says Vijay Nambiar, the company’s GM for the Middle East, Africa and the Indian subcontinent. “A case in point is our MA03/MA03+ premium
model range various from capacities of 55t to 1200t. The most popular Demag ATCs in the Middle East are in the 100t, 130t, 160t, 220t and 300t classes, Deepak Jain, senior sales manager, Middle East, tells CMME. The AC 100-4L, AC 130-5, AC 160-5, AC 220-5 and AC 300 -6 have proved especially popular in the region and the compact AC45 City crane is also finding favour in the urban lift jobs arena, he adds. At Bauma, Demag also showed off the 55t AC553, which is extremely compact at 2.55m, has a boom length of 50m and can travel with its full equipment while remaining under the 12t axle load limit in most cities. In Jain’s words: “In this region, people are looking for taxi configuration in the highcapacity range. As the rental rates became competitive, rental companies needed to innovate and improve the utilisation rate of their cranes – do more jobs with one crane. This increased the demand for taxi configurations, and Demag has always been very strong in listening to customers and innovating design.” Design is also Grove’s backbone, says Semple, while pointing out the brand’s Megatrak System, a facility to control the height of every wheel independently on Grove ATCs. “This gives you better ground clearance and also permanent contact with the ground on all wheels, no matter what the site conditions. Each wheel goes up or down exactly as per the terrain on a Grove ATC. No other manufacturer offers this, with some brands even using rigid axles. Anyone who’s driven on a Grove ATC will tell you it’s the smoothest ride you can get in a comparable product. And that’s one of the reasons our ATCs are very popular in
places like Africa and the Middle East, where the terrain can be challenging. If you go into the deserts of KSA or in the job-sites of Egypt, this is where our Megatrak suspension shines. It also protects the super structure of the crane from excessive vibration, absorbing all the shocks and giving the superstructure a smooth ride,” Semple explains. Another Manitowoc innovation is the CCS or Crane Control System, “an ergonomic and fool-proof way to operate a crane”. It has two screens, a jog dial and only easy-to-understand pictograms instead of text. “It’s designed to make your crane operations similar to a smartphone
crane tyre, which is one of the most well-received tyres in the Middle East crane market.” Magna’s MA03/MA03+ offer an optimal combination of tyre performance and purchase price, leading to a low cost-per-hour figure and highly efficient operation, he explains. This proposition is widely recognised in the market with important GCC customers, such as regional crane rental heavyweight Al Faris Equipment Rentals. “With many other successful references worldwide Magna Tyres has the experience and knowledge to deliver
Even as Terex and Tadano complete the process of its sale, Demag still showed off its popular ATCs at Bauma, highlighting its AC45 City and AC300-6 models.
the premium crane tyre solution requested by the leading crane rental companies,” Nambiar adds. That experience and knowledge has led to continued success and customer retention. Take Al Faris, for example. Magna Tyres signed an annual contract with Al Faris last year to supply tyres for all-terrain cranes in the Dubai-headquartered rental company’s fleet. With 445/95R25 Magna MA03 mobile crane tyres fitted to Al Faris’ mobile crane fleet, the company was impressed enough with the tyres’ performance to renew the contract for another year.
- an intuitive process whereby the crane automatically selects the best load chart and extends the boom to the best position for a lift.” Out of Grove’s range of 50-450t capacity models Semple is excited about the 250t XL launch. “It’s a 250t rated machine on five axles and its main feature is a super-long 78.5m boom. You can now get just a little short of our popular 6-axle 6300L crane’s 80m boom but on a 5-axle chassis, which is cheaper, easier to mobilise and run on the road, and also fits into tighter spots. So on a lot of petrochemical projects like refineries and flare replacements, this is the ideal package.”
